Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Hawks Bay Regional Council is facing flak over a
- 0:03Speaker 1: Facebook post which features photos of patched Gang members inside
- 0:07Speaker 1: council chambers. Now the council uploaded the posts to Facebook.
- 0:12Speaker 1: It included the gang members celebrating the decision to retain
- 0:15Speaker 1: the Maori wards. Simon Brown, who's the local government minister,
- 0:19Speaker 1: is really upset at this. He said it was appalling.
- 0:23Speaker 1: They are intimidating and you're not allowed patches. It's against
- 0:26Speaker 1: the law. So what were they doing their Honeywhite Ormspi's
- 0:28Speaker 1: the hawks Bay Regional Council chair and she joins me
- 0:31Speaker 1: this morning, Mordenna Martina Ryan, thanks for being with me,
- 0:35Speaker 1: Simmy and Brown is not happy. What do you reckon?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah, So I'd just like to take us through sort
- 0:43Speaker 2: of the event that happens on Wednesday. So we were
- 0:48Speaker 2: in council chambers. We were obviously discussing an important matter
- 0:53Speaker 2: around Mali representations through our two Marti constituencies, and look,
- 0:58Speaker 2: that was a very common environment. Near the end, in
- 1:04Speaker 2: the middle of deliberations, we had Mungleman members come into
- 1:09Speaker 2: the chambers. It was it was quite packed as it was,
- 1:13Speaker 2: and the best thing in that situation, ready to do
- 1:16Speaker 2: was bring the discussion to a conclusion and allow the
- 1:20Speaker 2: chamber to disperse because the item was over and it
- 1:25Speaker 2: was a unanimous vote to support and retain those Maori constituencies,
- 1:31Speaker 2: which gives us the opportunity to go to rest Gringdom
- 1:37Speaker 2: and give the community the opportunity now to explain the
- 1:41Speaker 2: many benefits of having made boys around the table, so
- 1:45Speaker 2: that that's really what had happened on Facebook, so that
- 1:54Speaker 2: that was our staff and you know that was probably
- 1:57Speaker 2: not not a good move, and that they did come
- 2:01Speaker 2: down a couple of them afterwards. So that was a
- 2:05Speaker 2: discussion that I had with our vee.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Do you guys have security.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Not full time security.
- 2:12Speaker 1: So we're there security that they're on the day, No.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Not that I was aware of. So when I looked
- 2:18Speaker 2: into whether we have a policy now that given this
- 2:21Speaker 2: is the first time it's happened in the Hawks Bay
- 2:24Speaker 2: Regional Council, we don't have a policy around being game pictures,
- 2:31Speaker 2: but we need to have one now of course.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Because the law we don't because presumably, I mean, I
- 2:36Speaker 1: don't know what your alcohol or drugs policy is, but
- 2:39Speaker 1: it's against the lord smoke meta. You wouldn't let someone
- 2:42Speaker 1: come in and smoke methan in your chamber. Do you
- 2:45Speaker 1: know what I mean?
- 2:45Speaker 2: No, no, And it's against the law and the laws
- 2:48Speaker 2: enforced by police. And in this situation and council buildings,
- 2:54Speaker 2: you'd have a policy. And those that provide public service
- 2:58Speaker 2: areas like a district city councils have a really strong,
- 3:01Speaker 2: robust policy around being in game pictures. It's never happened
- 3:07Speaker 2: for us, so the one, but we will have one now.
- 3:12Speaker 1: In the future. Call you'd call one one one, I guess,
- 3:15Speaker 1: would you and say, yeah, because.
- 3:17Speaker 2: We're follow a policy that looked at you know, asking
- 3:22Speaker 2: those members leave your jackets in the car not acceptable
- 3:26Speaker 2: to bring in the building.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Did they say anything while they were there anyway?
- 3:31Speaker 2: No, no, And look in the room. It was very
- 3:35Speaker 2: peaceful come and a celebratory rue. There was no there's
- 3:41Speaker 2: no words from them. There was no intimidation.
- 3:48Speaker 1: No one felt scared.
- 3:50Speaker 2: No, no, and you know, just just to be clear
- 3:54Speaker 2: that they came through near the end of the item,
- 3:59Speaker 2: and so the best thing was to carry on, bring
- 4:02Speaker 2: it to conclusion and then allow people to leave once
- 4:06Speaker 2: we head voted. It's a situation.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Thank you right, Thank you very much for your time
- 4:12Speaker 1: for explaining it to us, I really appreciate it. Hineway
- 4:14Speaker 1: at Ormsby, who is the Hawks Bay Regional Council Chair.
