- 1:05Speaker 2: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian. And
- 1:07Speaker 2: I am Misty.
- 1:07Speaker 3: We're coming to you live via digital recording from Wonderfest
- 1:12Speaker 3: here in sunny Louisville.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Sort of overcast.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Louisville, Kentucky.
- 1:31Speaker 7: We haven't got towed yet. That's good.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:33Speaker 7: We're going to tow this while we're in the truck.
- 1:37Speaker 8: So, yes, we are at Wonderfest here in the level
- 1:40Speaker 8: of model geeks.
- 1:41Speaker 2: And I don't know.
- 1:43Speaker 9: What else have we... If you haven't been to it, yeah,
- 1:46Speaker 9: definitely go check it out. It's lots of stuff. But
- 1:49Speaker 9: their main core crowd is like.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Nerds. No. Officially vinyl modelers. If you're into vinyl model
- 1:56Speaker 2: kits and actually doing a lot of modeling, there's probably...
- 2:01Speaker 2: I don't know if I'll.
- 2:02Speaker 9: Say the biggest in the country, but I'd say one
- 2:03Speaker 9: of the biggest assemblages of models and modelers.
- 2:07Speaker 2: And they have a competition.
- 2:09Speaker 9: They have a whole contest that goes on every year
- 2:12Speaker 9: and a display that everybody can be part of. So
- 2:15Speaker 9: it's pretty amazing how many people show up with models
- 2:18Speaker 9: and models that they've spent.
- 2:20Speaker 2: A ridiculous amount of time on.
- 2:23Speaker 8: Yeah I'm lucky I'd glue my hands together if I
- 2:25Speaker 8: tried it dude I.
- 2:26Speaker 10: Totally would too I used to do model cars I
- 2:28Speaker 10: think a lot I was pretty fucking awesome at it
- 2:30Speaker 10: but I'm awesome at most things but I.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Just didn't you get the green hornet car that one
- 2:35Speaker 2: time oh yeah.
- 2:36Speaker 10: To do the make and take of the green hornet
- 2:38Speaker 10: yeah so I'll walk by this year I'll walk by
- 2:40Speaker 10: their make and take and I'm like dude he's putting
- 2:42Speaker 10: together a fucking pony that's not badass dude had a
- 2:45Speaker 10: fucking emo haircut and like fucking wrist cut marks and
- 2:49Speaker 10: he's fucking building.
- 2:50Speaker 7: A pony for god's sake.
- 2:52Speaker 2: It's ironic That's something.
- 2:55Speaker 10: It was an orange pony, too, so you can't even
- 2:57Speaker 10: pretend like it's badass. It's not even, like, a cool pony.
- 3:01Speaker 7: It's orange.
- 3:02Speaker 2: If there is such a thing as a cool pony.
- 3:04Speaker 10: Hey, my little ponies were awesome, but just not the
- 3:05Speaker 10: orange ones. No, I guess Applejack was okay. He was orange.
- 3:10Speaker 7: I've watched way too much My Little Ponies the past
- 3:12Speaker 7: couple days.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 3:13Speaker 10: Because I've been watching a lot of the mashups. I
- 3:16Speaker 10: watched The Watchmen and My Little Pony's mashup, and that
- 3:19Speaker 10: was fucking awesome. I don't care what anybody says. I
- 3:21Speaker 10: watched another one, too, but I totally forgot.
- 3:22Speaker 5: What it was.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I don't think I've seen these.
- 3:24Speaker 7: You don't see the mashups?
- 3:25Speaker 10: It's fucking hilarious. I've seen a couple of them. I
- 3:28Speaker 10: can't remember the other one I watched, but it was
- 3:29Speaker 10: fucking hilarious, too. Yeah, I watched The Watchmen last.
- 3:32Speaker 7: That's why it's more fresh in my memory.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Wow.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I don't know what to do with it. Awesome.
- 3:37Speaker 7: Chock full of awesome. Oodles and noodles of awesome.
- 3:41Speaker 2: My Little Pony.
- 3:42Speaker 7: My Little Pony was awesome. Fireflies was my favorite.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Which one was Lightning Butt?
- 3:46Speaker 7: That was Firefly.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Alright, that was my favorite because it was Lightning Butt.
- 3:50Speaker 7: Yeah, Lightning Bolt Butt. He was my favorite. He was pink.
- 3:54Speaker 2: He was pretty awesome. Blue Lightning Bolt.
- 3:56Speaker 7: He had wings.
- 3:57Speaker 10: He flew.
- 3:58Speaker 7: He was.
- 4:01Speaker 2: A pegasus. Alright, so that is where we're at.
- 4:04Speaker 8: We'll probably check in the convention there and figure out.
- 4:11Speaker 2: And check in with peoples as we go along.
- 4:14Speaker 8: We've got a few we're attempting to sit down and
- 4:16Speaker 8: talk to, so that should be fun along the way.
- 4:18Speaker 2: But in the meantime, I guess we can roll into
- 4:20Speaker 2: this week's geek activities. Woo!
- 4:23Speaker 9: For me, a lot of prep stuff doing this, so
- 4:27Speaker 9: I sort of re-watched some stuff.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I did re-watch The Spy Who Loved Me. Man, I forgot.
- 4:34Speaker 2: And that's what I was telling you earlier, Misty.
- 4:37Speaker 9: I mean, a lot of people like the old school
- 4:40Speaker 9: Bond movies and they love the Sean Connery ones because
- 4:42Speaker 9: he was like more hardcore and whatever. I grew up
- 4:45Speaker 9: with a lot of the Roger Moore ones, I think,
- 4:47Speaker 9: because they just hit at cable at that point. And
- 4:50Speaker 9: I watched a lot of goofy movies on cable and
- 4:52Speaker 9: I thought, you know, it's got gadgets and cool stuff
- 4:54Speaker 9: in it.
- 4:54Speaker 2: So, OK, let's watch that.
- 4:56Speaker 9: I think I forgot just how ridiculous they are.
- 5:00Speaker 10: I have never in my entire life seen an entire
- 5:05Speaker 10: Bond movie.
- 5:06Speaker 7: I was going to say Sean Connery movie.
- 5:08Speaker 2: You've seen those, but just not a Bond version.
- 5:10Speaker 10: Maybe like one or two. I guess I'm not a
- 5:12Speaker 10: big Sean Connery fanatic. I've not seen any James Bond
- 5:15Speaker 10: movies all the way through. I'm okay with that, but
- 5:18Speaker 10: Jay's having like a meltdown. Like, we have to watch it.
- 5:21Speaker 2: We gotta watch it. I'm like, dude. Old ones or
- 5:24Speaker 2: more recent?
- 5:24Speaker 7: He wants to watch all of them. All of them.
- 5:27Speaker 8: See, I'm saying, if you want to do, like, a
- 5:30Speaker 8: whole sub-series of Misty's thoughts on Bond movies, I'm all
- 5:34Speaker 8: for that, because that could be entertaining.
- 5:36Speaker 10: See, Jay's more of the Sean, he's more of the
- 5:37Speaker 10: Sean Connery.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I can see that.
- 5:39Speaker 10: His mom was in love with Sean Connery.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:41Speaker 10: Apparently, according to him, his dad likes to pretend like
- 5:43Speaker 10: he looks like Sean Connery, and he does not look
- 5:45Speaker 10: like Sean Connery. Not really.
- 5:47Speaker 7: You've seen his dad, you've seen Sean Connery. Could they
- 5:49Speaker 7: in any way be mistaken for each other?
- 5:51Speaker 2: That's not really what I think of when I see
- 5:53Speaker 2: his dad, but all right. I know.
- 5:55Speaker 7: His dad has British teeth.
- 5:58Speaker 9: But this, yeah, this one is a Roger Moore one,
- 6:01Speaker 9: and it's, yeah, it's quite silly. But I remember as
- 6:06Speaker 9: a kid loving that one because that one has, to me,
- 6:09Speaker 9: everybody else loves the, like, fancy, like, street racing cars
- 6:12Speaker 9: that you can actually go out and buy if you're
- 6:14Speaker 9: a millionaire. I always loved that one because that's the
- 6:17Speaker 9: one with the underwater car.
- 6:18Speaker 7: Dude, I want an underwater car.
- 6:20Speaker 8: Like, I had the little Hot Wheels of it, and
- 6:22Speaker 8: you've probably seen it. Yeah, it's a freaking underwater car.
- 6:25Speaker 8: It drives around underwater.
- 6:27Speaker 2: It's awesome.
- 6:28Speaker 9: I thought that was so cool. It's the first appearance
- 6:31Speaker 9: of Jaws. I thought Jaws was pretty awesome.
- 6:33Speaker 2: When I was a kid. Was there a shark in it?
- 6:35Speaker 2: Kind of. He's equally as frightening.
- 6:39Speaker 7: Richard Keel, right? I got that one. I don't even
- 6:41Speaker 7: see this movie.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Wow, you are a dork.
- 6:43Speaker 7: His boyfriend loves him some Richard Keel. I don't know why.
- 6:46Speaker 7: Because he is awesome. It is the right character, right?
- 6:51Speaker 7: I am getting it right.
- 6:52Speaker 2: I believe so. But yeah, he's fucking awesome.
- 6:55Speaker 8: I mean, again, that part becomes so ridiculous, but yet
- 6:58Speaker 8: I'm still like, no, he's awesome. And he is quite
- 7:00Speaker 8: a formidable foe the entire time. He just, he, yeah,
- 7:04Speaker 8: he just undying villain. So, uh, yeah, that, that's, it's
- 7:09Speaker 8: all fun. And Carolyn Moreau is in that one. So
- 7:11Speaker 8: I was kind of rewatching that and, um, yeah, it
- 7:14Speaker 8: doesn't have enough screen time, but I don't know that
- 7:16Speaker 8: she should have shoved Barbara Bach out of the way.
- 7:19Speaker 8: I don't know why she didn't get the starring role.
- 7:21Speaker 8: Cause I didn't, It seems a little off, really, because
- 7:23Speaker 8: Barbara Bach's kind of iffy in that role. Yeah, back when,
- 7:27Speaker 8: you know.
- 7:27Speaker 7: There's no Catherine Bach, I'll tell you that.
- 7:30Speaker 11: No.
- 7:30Speaker 8: No, most people can't be Catherine. In fact, Catherine Bach
- 7:33Speaker 8: can't be Catherine Bach these days.
- 7:35Speaker 7: I never thought she was that hot in the first place.
- 7:36Speaker 7: That's just me.
- 7:38Speaker 2: You were busy with Bo. You didn't have time for her.
- 7:39Speaker 7: Dude, he was totally pretty.
- 7:41Speaker 2: He's still pretty.
- 7:42Speaker 1: He is.
- 7:42Speaker 8: He's gorgeous.
- 7:43Speaker 7: We were talking about that when we were watching the
- 7:44Speaker 7: finale of Smallville.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Yeah, we did last night when I called to talk about.
- 7:48Speaker 9: coming here i was like oh yeah and smallville's on
- 7:50Speaker 9: and haven't really paid attention to it in years but
- 7:52Speaker 9: tonight's the finale it's.
- 7:53Speaker 10: Like holy shit that's still on yeah.
- 7:55Speaker 9: I know that's what that's what i would say every
- 7:57Speaker 9: season when i would say it i'd be like really
- 7:59Speaker 9: tell me he's at least flying tell me he's at
- 8:01Speaker 9: least got a damn cost no.
- 8:02Speaker 8: Fuck what's this blur bullshit just making superman for god's
- 8:06Speaker 8: sake this has gone on for like nine years She.
- 8:09Speaker 7: Was on forever. I watched it when it first came on,
- 8:11Speaker 7: but I just didn't.
- 8:12Speaker 2: That's the thing, I liked it. I mean, I liked
- 8:14Speaker 2: it for the first, you know, half of the run.
- 8:16Speaker 7: You liked it because it had Chloe in it.
- 8:18Speaker 2: I do like Chloe. Chloe was freaking adorable.
- 8:20Speaker 10: I liked Lex, and Lex was hot, but he has
- 8:21Speaker 10: not aged as well as the, uh, Clark.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:25Speaker 10: And none of them fucking age as well as John Schneider.
- 8:28Speaker 10: That fucking guy is gorgeous.
- 8:29Speaker 8: He's... God.
- 8:31Speaker 2: He is pretty for an old dude. He has held up. Again,
- 8:33Speaker 2: I think he looks better now.
- 8:34Speaker 10: He looks better in person even than he does in, like,
- 8:36Speaker 10: TV shows. Usually they pretty him up for the TV shows,
- 8:38Speaker 10: and then you see him and you're like, uh, uh.
- 8:40Speaker 7: But, God, he was gorgeous.
- 8:41Speaker 10: He was so fucking nice. God, I want to hug him.
- 8:44Speaker 2: You did.
- 8:45Speaker 7: I want to hug him again, like, right now.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Every day.
- 8:47Speaker 7: Every day.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Start off your day with a hug from John Schneider.
- 8:51Speaker 10: Dude, seriously, could there be a better way to start
- 8:53Speaker 10: a day? I don't think so.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Let's see.
- 8:55Speaker 10: I'll see if I can make cupcakes.
- 8:56Speaker 1: That would be awesome, too.
- 8:58Speaker 2: He shows up with cupcakes and a hug.
- 9:01Speaker 7: Fresh baked. He made them, too, from scratch. I've seen
- 9:04Speaker 7: them from.
- 9:04Speaker 10: Scratch, too.
- 9:05Speaker 2: If you can set that up.
- 9:06Speaker 7: That would be so awesome.
- 9:07Speaker 2: He was pretty nice. We might be able to talk
- 9:08Speaker 2: him into it. I don't know. I'm not sure what
- 9:10Speaker 2: Jay liked. As long as it's cupcakes. As long as
- 9:13Speaker 2: he gets some cupcakes. And maybe once in a while
- 9:15Speaker 2: a hug, you know.
- 9:16Speaker 7: He would do like the bro hug. The bro hug.
- 9:19Speaker 2: He'd fist bump him. Yeah, he'd get a fist bump.
- 9:21Speaker 7: A manly handshake. Jay's more a fan of a manly handshake.
- 9:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:30Speaker 2: You can't go wrong with that.
- 9:32Speaker 8: So, yeah, we randomly watched that sort of halfway last
- 9:35Speaker 8: night when we were talking about coming here.
- 9:36Speaker 7: It was quiet.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I muted it.
- 9:38Speaker 7: I didn't want to hear what was going on. It's
- 9:39Speaker 7: going to ruin it if I'm... It was interesting.
- 9:42Speaker 9: I'm just like, you started way too late. Like, they
- 9:45Speaker 9: should have done this, all of this stuff that they
- 9:47Speaker 9: did at the end here.
- 9:48Speaker 2: The whole last, like.
- 9:50Speaker 9: episode worth of stuff I'm like that's kind of cool
- 9:53Speaker 9: why wouldn't like this an entire season's arc of a
- 9:56Speaker 9: story and then like go ahead and give him the
- 9:59Speaker 9: damn suit let him fly around, and, like, do, like,
- 10:01Speaker 9: a couple of seasons of him actually being Superman, I
- 10:04Speaker 9: know you're supposed to be Smallville, but I'm like, you've
- 10:07Speaker 9: worn that out, after, like, four or five seasons, the
- 10:10Speaker 9: show should have switched its title to Metropolis, it should
- 10:13Speaker 9: have focused on him in the city, and not worried
- 10:15Speaker 9: about the Smallville nonsense anymore, and made him superman and
- 10:18Speaker 9: went ahead and like done a whole new storyline but but.
- 10:22Speaker 2: No they beat that thing to death.
- 10:24Speaker 9: And that's you know i give them credit every once
- 10:26Speaker 9: in a while they would still turn in interesting episodes
- 10:28Speaker 9: when i would catch it You know, they brought in
- 10:30Speaker 9: all the other superheroes after a while.
- 10:32Speaker 8: Okay, the Wonder Twins was a bad idea. But, you know,
- 10:34Speaker 8: Hawkman was kind of cool. Hawkman?
- 10:36Speaker 2: Hawkman was on there, and that guy was cool.
- 10:38Speaker 8: Like, the costume was the real Hawkman costume from the comics.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Like, it actually looked pretty good. So, again, that part
- 10:44Speaker 2: of the storyline was kind of cool.
- 10:46Speaker 9: What I saw of it last season, that's about the
- 10:49Speaker 9: only one I saw last season.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I just kind of.
- 10:51Speaker 7: I haven't seen it in years.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 10: Years and years and years.
- 10:55Speaker 2: I don't know. They just really should have. turned it
- 10:58Speaker 2: around midway in I think I quit.
- 10:59Speaker 7: Watching it when they killed off his dad.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Yeah I think that was about the last season I watched.
- 11:05Speaker 10: It regularly like you know what fuck you show I
- 11:07Speaker 10: don't want to watch you anymore get rid of John
- 11:09Speaker 10: Schneider fuck you.
- 11:11Speaker 8: Well he returned last night for his special appearance they
- 11:14Speaker 8: brought everybody back last night including Lex.
- 11:17Speaker 7: Showed off his sewing ability apparently I.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Was just amazed they got Michael Rosenbaum back.
- 11:21Speaker 7: What the fuck has he got to do?
- 11:22Speaker 8: That was the other thing. I figured they pissed him
- 11:24Speaker 8: off and he would never come back, but then again,
- 11:26Speaker 8: I was.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Like, well.
- 11:26Speaker 10: They've been working on Sorority Boys 2.
- 11:28Speaker 8: I was like, what's he done since then, actually? So, yeah,
- 11:31Speaker 8: he'll probably take that one-episode paycheck.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Whatever.
- 11:34Speaker 2: The only other thing I'd watched lately, I did watch
- 11:37Speaker 2: I Love You, Philip Morris. I don't know if you're
- 11:40Speaker 2: familiar with this one.
- 11:41Speaker 10: What's his face in it?
- 11:43Speaker 8: You would probably hate it initially because of the cast.
- 11:46Speaker 8: Because it's got Jim Carrey in it.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Oh, fuck Jim Carrey.
- 11:48Speaker 12: See?
- 11:49Speaker 2: I hate that guy.
- 11:50Speaker 8: I went into it very reluctantly because I'm so sick
- 11:54Speaker 8: of his stupid, over-the-top, ridiculous comedic performances. That's not what's
- 11:59Speaker 8: going on here. It's got Ewan McGregor, too. Ewan McGregor
- 12:03Speaker 8: is the one to watch in this.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Like, his... character is so.
- 12:07Speaker 9: Awesome and like it's another one I'm watching him going
- 12:09Speaker 9: I've seen him in like freaking Star Wars and crap
- 12:11Speaker 9: so I kind of forget oh yeah he's actually a
- 12:13Speaker 9: really good actor like I've seen him in so much
- 12:16Speaker 9: other mediocre stuff in the last several years that I'm
- 12:19Speaker 9: just like it's been a while since I've seen him
- 12:21Speaker 9: turn in like a really good performance and he's really
- 12:24Speaker 9: good in this like it's he's They're believable. And that's
- 12:28Speaker 9: the thing that probably a lot of people, well, certain
- 12:31Speaker 9: types of people are going to have a problem with,
- 12:33Speaker 9: because it's basically a prison love story.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Jim Carrey plays.
- 12:39Speaker 9: This guy, and he's a married guy, he's a cop,
- 12:41Speaker 9: he's got all this stuff going on, and he gets
- 12:42Speaker 9: himself into some crazy trouble, and he ends up in prison.
- 12:45Speaker 7: Do shenanigans ensue?
- 12:47Speaker 2: There's a lot of shenanigans in this movie, let me
- 12:48Speaker 2: tell you.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Does hilarity ensue? No hilarity?
- 12:52Speaker 10: Yeah, actually there is.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I mean, there are times when it is just.
- 12:56Speaker 8: seriously a laughing out loud kind of comedy and then
- 12:59Speaker 8: there's times where.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Like whoa okay this is kind of serious so I
- 13:03Speaker 2: bet it's.
- 13:03Speaker 10: No let's go to prison or let's go to jail
- 13:06Speaker 10: no thank god it's not was it prison or jail
- 13:09Speaker 10: I fucking loved that movie I ain't gonna lie it
- 13:12Speaker 10: had Joe Bennett from uh Arrested Development I loved.
- 13:16Speaker 8: That movie this is not that movie it had Dax
- 13:19Speaker 8: Shepard I loved that movie I do remember Dax was
- 13:21Speaker 8: in it I would almost watch it cause Dax is pretty.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Funny but it was awesome This is not that.
- 13:28Speaker 9: His character was always gay, so it's not like it's
- 13:30Speaker 9: some sort of, oh, he magically finds this in prison.
- 13:33Speaker 2: He had this secret life going on, and then as
- 13:36Speaker 2: he gets busted.
- 13:37Speaker 8: He comes to terms with the fact that I'm going
- 13:39Speaker 8: to turn my life around, I'm going to be who
- 13:40Speaker 8: I feel like I need to be. So then you
- 13:43Speaker 8: enter into this relationship with this other prisoner.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Who is Ewan McGregor, and it's very genuine. It's one
- 13:50Speaker 2: of those that I'm so.
- 13:52Speaker 9: amazed to see any relationship feel real in a movie
- 13:55Speaker 9: regardless of the gender so that this one is like
- 13:57Speaker 9: usually they ham up any you know gay relationship in
- 14:00Speaker 9: any movie tv show whatever to the point that it's
- 14:03Speaker 9: so ridiculous that you know this didn't really feel like
- 14:06Speaker 9: that like it actually just felt like a real relationship
- 14:09Speaker 9: they felt like they were just in a relationship They
- 14:12Speaker 9: happen to be in prison, but it was still, like, pretty, like,
- 14:15Speaker 9: normal otherwise. As normal as you can get as a
- 14:18Speaker 9: prison relationship. But that part's kind of cool. And then
- 14:21Speaker 9: once it gets out, it gets more interesting because then
- 14:24Speaker 9: he gets out of, you know, Jim Carrey gets out
- 14:26Speaker 9: of prison and he works to get Ewan McGregor out
- 14:27Speaker 9: of prison. And then they go on and try to have, like,
- 14:29Speaker 9: a life. And then the really, like, the most interesting
- 14:33Speaker 9: thing about this movie is the fact that it's all real.
- 14:36Speaker 9: It's all based on an actual guy.
- 14:37Speaker 10: Hmm.
- 14:38Speaker 9: And everything that went on with this guy, this guy is, like,
- 14:41Speaker 9: such a good scam artist. Like, and that's how he
- 14:45Speaker 9: originally gets himself in trouble with the basics. But as
- 14:47Speaker 9: he gets out, like, he, what all does he do?
- 14:51Speaker 9: He convinces people he's a lawyer. Never been to a
- 14:54Speaker 9: day of law school in his life. But he's in
- 14:56Speaker 9: court talking up cases to a judge. And, like, he's
- 14:58Speaker 9: got everybody convinced he's a lawyer. He gets a CEO
- 15:01Speaker 9: job at, like, a Fortune 500 company by making up
- 15:05Speaker 9: everything just by scamming the guy in the interview.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:08Speaker 8: He, um, he then at some point, like he's, he's
- 15:10Speaker 8: like ripping off and bezzling huge amounts of money.
- 15:13Speaker 9: He gets into prison again at some point. He like
- 15:17Speaker 9: escapes from prison like four or five different times.
- 15:20Speaker 2: And this is all real.
- 15:21Speaker 9: This guy, like all the plots and shit that this
- 15:24Speaker 9: guy does to escape from all these different types of
- 15:26Speaker 9: prison facilities that he's in.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Are all a true story.
- 15:30Speaker 9: Like, this guy actually did all of this stuff. And that,
- 15:32Speaker 9: to me, is the most amazing part of it, is
- 15:35Speaker 9: the fact that this.
- 15:36Speaker 8: Was a real guy and all these crazy things that
- 15:38Speaker 8: are happening really went on in the real world.
- 15:40Speaker 2: And that's kind of strange.
- 15:43Speaker 8: And Jim Carrey does not overdo his performance.
- 15:46Speaker 2: He's, I mean... Yeah. Cause I mean, it's, it's, it's
- 15:50Speaker 2: kind of Truman show.
- 15:51Speaker 9: Like, you know, it's like, I liked him in that
- 15:52Speaker 9: he's got that little bit of like overtly cheesy thing
- 15:56Speaker 9: that he does, but it really works on this character
- 15:58Speaker 9: because this character had to be that way.
- 16:01Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 16:01Speaker 9: He had to be able to bullshit people and you
- 16:03Speaker 9: kind of get that vibe that this guy could do that.
- 16:06Speaker 2: You know, he actually is that.
- 16:08Speaker 9: Skilled at, you know, just scamming people and getting them
- 16:11Speaker 9: to trust him, even though he's totally screwing them over.
- 16:14Speaker 2: So it's, again, that was, that was a lot better.
- 16:17Speaker 2: And it's just well done too.
- 16:19Speaker 8: I mean, I figured I was going in for those
- 16:21Speaker 8: performances that everybody talked about, but like, it's also well
- 16:23Speaker 8: put together.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Like it's shot really well.
- 16:25Speaker 9: The way the director like features everything and works in
- 16:29Speaker 9: this like ongoing storyline.
- 16:31Speaker 8: He works in really cool music cues along the way.
- 16:33Speaker 8: It's just, it's a lot better put together than I
- 16:36Speaker 8: didn't know. I had such bad expectations going in because
- 16:39Speaker 8: of the Jim Carrey factor that I was really, really
- 16:42Speaker 8: surprised with how much I liked it.
- 16:43Speaker 10: I will probably never watch it simply because of the
- 16:46Speaker 10: Jim Carrey factor.
- 16:47Speaker 2: I really don't like him. I think you can get
- 16:50Speaker 2: past that.
- 16:51Speaker 8: Again, as much as I don't like him now, I
- 16:53Speaker 8: was surprised how quickly I kind of got over that
- 16:56Speaker 8: and just got interested in the character.
- 16:57Speaker 7: You know how very unforgiving I am?
- 16:59Speaker 2: Yeah, but you've liked him in the serious stuff. I
- 17:02Speaker 2: don't appreciate it.
- 17:02Speaker 7: I liked him in The Truman Show, and that's it.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Yeah. Have you seen The Majestic?
- 17:06Speaker 1: No.
- 17:07Speaker 2: I didn't hate him in The Majestic.
- 17:08Speaker 9: It's a weird, cheesy movie. Like, the movie's not as
- 17:11Speaker 9: good as these other two. But his performance wasn't bad.
- 17:14Speaker 2: He can play. That's probably his most normal character ever.
- 17:18Speaker 10: I don't want to give him another shot. He already
- 17:21Speaker 10: blew all his shots with me. I'm okay with The
- 17:23Speaker 10: Truman Show, and that's it.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I don't leave it at that.
- 17:27Speaker 2: He's another one of those and we just brought that up.
- 17:29Speaker 7: I don't want to tip the scales.
- 17:31Speaker 9: Well, it's one of those we brought it up lately
- 17:33Speaker 9: of like a person's personal life if you can separate
- 17:36Speaker 9: that from the performance.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Because the thing is, as a person, he seems.
- 17:39Speaker 9: Ridiculous and he seems so annoying and hammy and always
- 17:44Speaker 9: looking to get attention at every turn. And even, like,
- 17:46Speaker 9: lately they were kind of giving him shit because now he's, like,
- 17:48Speaker 9: trying so hard. He still wants an Oscar. He keeps
- 17:51Speaker 9: trying to do those kind of roles. And they were
- 17:54Speaker 9: sort of making fun of him even for this role. Like,
- 17:55Speaker 9: it was something he was trying so hard to do.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Please, I'm a serious actor. Give me an Oscar.
- 18:01Speaker 7: If Jamie Foxx can get one.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Yeah, well, see, there you go.
- 18:04Speaker 9: But yeah, I almost felt like maybe it was that situation,
- 18:08Speaker 9: but I can separate that as much as I don't
- 18:11Speaker 9: like his behavior in the outside world.
- 18:13Speaker 10: I don't give a shit about his behavior in the
- 18:14Speaker 10: outside world. Most of his movies suck ass. I can't
- 18:16Speaker 10: get past that. He fucked up the Grinch, and that's
- 18:20Speaker 10: sacred territory right there.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I won't let that one slide. I'm sorry.
- 18:23Speaker 10: No.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I'm still pissed at Ron Howard for.
- 18:26Speaker 4: That, too.
- 18:27Speaker 7: I haven't seen it.
- 18:28Speaker 10: I will never watch it, but the fact that it's
- 18:29Speaker 10: out there existing kind of pisses me off, and I
- 18:31Speaker 10: will never forgive that, and I will not give him
- 18:33Speaker 10: another chance. Yeah, I saw The Truman Show. before he
- 18:34Speaker 10: did The Grinch. He crossed the line.
- 18:37Speaker 8: Yeah, I can get on board with most of that,
- 18:40Speaker 8: but I'll still try to put that aside and watch
- 18:43Speaker 8: a performance.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Not me.
- 18:44Speaker 9: I know, that's because you're hard-headed, but I will try
- 18:46Speaker 9: to watch a performance for the performance, and this actually works.
- 18:51Speaker 9: I think if you can get past not liking Jim
- 18:53Speaker 9: Carrey like a lot of people do now, it's actually
- 18:55Speaker 9: a really good movie, but that's most of what I've watched.
- 18:59Speaker 10: I watched several things. I can't remember what they all
- 19:02Speaker 10: are at this very moment, but I will try my best.
- 19:05Speaker 10: I did watch Ensue in the Darkness, because I think
- 19:09Speaker 10: I'm cheating on my Sean Patrick Flannery right here.
- 19:12Speaker 7: I love me some Carl Urban.
- 19:13Speaker 10: Now, because he is just chock full of just, ugh,
- 19:16Speaker 10: he's so sexy. So I watched Ensue in the Darkness,
- 19:19Speaker 10: which I was pissed at this movie, because I was
- 19:21Speaker 10: pissed at everybody in this movie, because everybody's fucking retarded. Like,
- 19:24Speaker 10: just stupid shit.
- 19:25Speaker 7: Like, alright, two girls.
- 19:28Speaker 10: I guess they at some point were with a bunch
- 19:29Speaker 10: of other people and then they just took off on
- 19:31Speaker 10: their own in Argentina.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Good idea.
- 19:34Speaker 10: Yeah, you're riding your bikes. Two girls, two hot chicks
- 19:37Speaker 10: alone in Argentina.
- 19:39Speaker 7: Yeah, this is going to go well.
- 19:42Speaker 10: And so, God, I was just so mad at these girls.
- 19:47Speaker 10: One of them was Amber Heard and she's just so, gosh,
- 19:49Speaker 10: she's so beautiful.
- 19:50Speaker 7: But I was just.
- 19:51Speaker 10: Mad because the other girl was the one who got kidnapped.
- 19:53Speaker 10: If you're going to kidnap them, I guess the other
- 19:54Speaker 10: chick was kind of slutty. So I guess you had
- 19:56Speaker 10: the slutty girl and the not slutty girl.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I'm still going with Amber Heard.
- 19:58Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 19:59Speaker 10: Have you seen the other girl?
- 20:00Speaker 7: Her name is Odette some shit.
- 20:01Speaker 1: I don't know what it is.
- 20:02Speaker 7: Odette, whatever.
- 20:04Speaker 3: She's hot.
- 20:05Speaker 7: But she's all like, hey, look at me. I'm sexy.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Right. And I also don't have a shot with Ambers.
- 20:10Speaker 7: I got a better shot than you do.
- 20:12Speaker 2: You do have a better shot than I do.
- 20:13Speaker 13: I do.
- 20:14Speaker 10: But, yeah, they end up in Argentina and they miss
- 20:17Speaker 10: their plane because they're a bunch of... First, they miss
- 20:19Speaker 10: their bus because, God forbid, they fucking not get drunk
- 20:21Speaker 10: and hung over and miss their bus.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Woo-hoo, party girls. Yeah, totally.
- 20:25Speaker 10: And then they're out somewhere and Amber heard and her
- 20:29Speaker 10: friend getting a fight over something. So Amber just fucking
- 20:31Speaker 10: leaves her ass. by a fucking pond out in the
- 20:35Speaker 10: middle of fucking nowhere a waterfall bitch gets kidnapped i'm
- 20:39Speaker 10: like i'm gonna leave this girl in the middle of
- 20:41Speaker 10: the wilderness by herself in argentina no i'm gonna add
- 20:47Speaker 10: argentina to the list of countries that i'm never gonna
- 20:49Speaker 10: fucking go to art it's already probably on there argentina
- 20:52Speaker 10: and australia fuck a bunch of both of those countries
- 20:55Speaker 10: because everything there wants to kill you either i'm gonna
- 20:56Speaker 10: kidnap you and sell you Or everything that can fucking
- 21:00Speaker 10: eat you will eat you.
- 21:01Speaker 7: It's just, nah.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Yeah, so far we haven't heard from anyone from Australia.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Because they're dead.
- 21:06Speaker 8: They haven't called in, they haven't written in to tell
- 21:09Speaker 8: us that they've survived whatever it is that's trying to
- 21:11Speaker 8: kill them there.
- 21:12Speaker 10: They're getting eaten by koala bears at this point.
- 21:16Speaker 9: So if you're out there in Australia, which I know
- 21:18Speaker 9: we've got a few people that are, let us know
- 21:20Speaker 9: that there are things that aren't trying to kill you there.
- 21:22Speaker 7: I'm not buying it.
- 21:23Speaker 10: I think everything in Australia and Argentina wants.
- 21:26Speaker 8: To kill you.
- 21:27Speaker 7: I guess in Argentina it's more the people.
- 21:28Speaker 10: They want to kill you and, oh, I guess they
- 21:30Speaker 10: will sell you and then kill you.
- 21:31Speaker 2: That might be true. I don't know if we have
- 21:33Speaker 2: anyone in Argentina.
- 21:34Speaker 9: If we do, let us know if you've been kidnapped
- 21:36Speaker 9: or are a kidnapper and let us know your take
- 21:38Speaker 9: on the whole situation.
- 21:39Speaker 7: Yeah, dude, totally.
- 21:41Speaker 11: But, yeah.
- 21:41Speaker 10: I was kind of mad at Carl Urban because, spoiler,
- 21:45Speaker 10: he gets killed like a bitch.
- 21:48Speaker 3: I'm mad.
- 21:49Speaker 7: I was mad.
- 21:50Speaker 10: You don't fucking... Okay, I'm totally going to spoil this
- 21:53Speaker 10: right now. You never fucking turn your back on the guy.
- 21:56Speaker 7: Who has been trying to kill you.
- 21:58Speaker 11: Ever.
- 21:58Speaker 7: I don't care if you have a gun.
- 22:00Speaker 10: You never look away from him because chances are he's
- 22:03Speaker 10: got another gun. Fucker. I'm mad.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Haven't you watched movies before, Carl Urban?
- 22:09Speaker 10: You would think.
- 22:10Speaker 8: God.
- 22:11Speaker 2: You're in them. God. You would know the rules by now.
- 22:14Speaker 7: Dude, seriously.
- 22:15Speaker 10: And then after that I watched Doom. Because following along
- 22:19Speaker 10: with the Carl Urban theme.
- 22:20Speaker 2: I forgot he was even in that.
- 22:22Speaker 10: I liked that movie. It was so ridiculous. I don't
- 22:25Speaker 10: care about anybody.
- 22:25Speaker 7: It was fun.
- 22:26Speaker 10: I was kind of thrown back. Oh, I forgot one
- 22:29Speaker 10: that I should mention that one first. I watched Race
- 22:31Speaker 10: to Witch Mountain.
- 22:32Speaker 4: Well.
- 22:32Speaker 7: I'm going to tie these two together.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Okay.
- 22:33Speaker 10: We watched Race to Witch Mountain, which had The Rock
- 22:36Speaker 10: in it. And it's a kid's movie.
- 22:39Speaker 2: It's a Disney movie.
- 22:40Speaker 10: It wasn't bad.
- 22:41Speaker 7: I didn't know that.
- 22:42Speaker 10: Kids were fucking aliens. I guess I don't know if
- 22:44Speaker 10: that's any different. That's not like a surprise. I'm not
- 22:45Speaker 10: ruining anything right there. They pretty much tell you right
- 22:47Speaker 10: at the beginning, oh, a spaceship landed.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Pretty sure that's why they're going to Witch Mountain.
- 22:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:52Speaker 10: I didn't know.
- 22:54Speaker 7: This was Jay's idea to watch this.
- 22:55Speaker 11: By the way.
- 22:55Speaker 7: I don't want any of this piled on me.
- 22:57Speaker 10: He was the one in control of the remote.
- 22:59Speaker 7: He wanted to watch it because you know what? The
- 23:01Speaker 7: Rock is fucking awesome.
- 23:02Speaker 2: The Rock is pretty awesome. Can't argue with that.
- 23:05Speaker 10: So the race to Witch Mountain was not as... It
- 23:07Speaker 10: was a bad angle. That brought it back to the
- 23:10Speaker 10: fact that then we watched Doom... And hearing The Rock
- 23:12Speaker 10: say fuck after watching Race to Witch Mountain, I was
- 23:15Speaker 10: just like, oh my god, The Rock.
- 23:16Speaker 7: Said a bad word. Like, how do you go from
- 23:19Speaker 7: being in.
- 23:19Speaker 10: A Disney movie to being in Doom.
- 23:21Speaker 7: And saying fuck? And he said it quite a bit, too.
- 23:23Speaker 8: Yeah, he's gotten so far away from that. Well, I
- 23:26Speaker 8: guess Fast Five withstanding. I mean, you know, the Tooth
- 23:29Speaker 8: Fairy and the, what was the one where he's raising
- 23:33Speaker 8: the little girl?
- 23:34Speaker 2: He's the football player. I don't know, I blocked all
- 23:35Speaker 2: that shit. I haven't watched any of that. Yeah, I
- 23:36Speaker 2: was like, he's done so many, like, kiddified movies that, yeah, he's, he's, ugh.
- 23:40Speaker 8: He's going to pacify his career. He better go back
- 23:43Speaker 8: to doing some more action stuff.
- 23:47Speaker 10: I can't not like The Rock. I don't want to
- 23:49Speaker 10: like him. Part of me wants to hate him.
- 23:52Speaker 7: Damn it, I can't.
- 23:53Speaker 10: He's just.
- 23:54Speaker 7: He's The Rock.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't argue with you.
- 23:57Speaker 10: He's awesome.
- 23:58Speaker 2: I don't like most wrestlers that turn into actors.
- 24:02Speaker 9: Most of his bad, kiddified movies I don't like.
- 24:05Speaker 2: But damn it, he's funny. He's got a good sense
- 24:07Speaker 2: of humor.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:09Speaker 2: He makes fun of himself more than anybody. Like, he's
- 24:11Speaker 2: just charismatic. Charismatic.
- 24:15Speaker 7: I love him. But then, yeah, the movie was so cheesy.
- 24:19Speaker 10: Doom was just, it was ridiculous.
- 24:21Speaker 7: But you know what?
- 24:21Speaker 10: Like I said, it was fun. I was laughing. Carl
- 24:25Speaker 10: Urban was sexy. That's how I follow along with my
- 24:28Speaker 10: Carl Urban. Then I watched, well, it kind of skips around.
- 24:31Speaker 10: Jesus Christ.
- 24:32Speaker 7: We watched Pitch Black.
- 24:34Speaker 10: Because Jay's never seen them, and he wouldn't let me
- 24:35Speaker 10: watch The Chronicles of Riddick unless we watched Pitch Black first.
- 24:39Speaker 2: You'd be lost.
- 24:41Speaker 7: Actually, no.
- 24:42Speaker 10: Barely. They make barely any references whatsoever to it at all.
- 24:48Speaker 10: But we watched Pitch Black, which I haven't seen in years.
- 24:50Speaker 10: I was kind of bored.
- 24:54Speaker 2: I remember kind of liking it at the time.
- 24:56Speaker 10: I remember liking it years ago, but this time I
- 24:58Speaker 10: was just like, Maybe I was just wanting this movie
- 25:00Speaker 10: to be over so I could watch the next one
- 25:02Speaker 10: that had.
- 25:02Speaker 7: Carl Urban in it.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Probably.
- 25:03Speaker 10: Come on, movie, stop. But yeah, it was just, it
- 25:09Speaker 10: was cheesy, even for me. And just like the, it
- 25:12Speaker 10: was written and the lines, I'm just like.
- 25:15Speaker 7: So bad.
- 25:16Speaker 9: I just liked it because it wanted, it was such
- 25:18Speaker 9: a knockoff Aliens movie. I mean, it so wanted to
- 25:21Speaker 9: be Aliens. It just, let's make the creatures a little different,
- 25:24Speaker 9: and they have to be in the dark. But other
- 25:26Speaker 9: than that.
- 25:27Speaker 2: It still felt like an Aliens rip-off kind of movie.
- 25:30Speaker 10: I remember, I was excited, because that was back when
- 25:31Speaker 10: I didn't dislike Vin Diesel.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Vin Diesel, yeah.
- 25:35Speaker 10: That's when I actually kind of liked, he wasn't bad
- 25:36Speaker 10: at that point.
- 25:37Speaker 7: I liked him in Pitch Black.
- 25:39Speaker 2: It's because I didn't know who he was in Pitch Black.
- 25:41Speaker 10: He was, and his voice, oh, he was so sexy
- 25:44Speaker 10: in that movie, just because of his voice. He was,
- 25:46Speaker 10: at that point, it was before, like, The Pacifier and
- 25:49Speaker 10: retarded shit like that.
- 25:51Speaker 7: But I liked him, and then.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Then we.
- 25:53Speaker 10: Got to the Chronicles of Riddick, and oh my god,
- 25:55Speaker 10: that one was even more cheesy and badly written. And
- 25:58Speaker 10: I'm not even sure what the hell they had going
- 25:59Speaker 10: on with Carl Urban's hair, dude.
- 26:02Speaker 7: Have you seen it? It's like a skullet. I'm not
- 26:03Speaker 7: even sure what's going on.
- 26:05Speaker 10: It's like, it sticks straight up in the front like this,
- 26:09Speaker 10: but it's shaved on the sides, and then it's long.
- 26:11Speaker 1: In the back.
- 26:13Speaker 2: This is not a good look for anyone, right?
- 26:15Speaker 10: It's not, but I kept cropping it just right so
- 26:18Speaker 10: that you couldn't see part of his hair.
- 26:20Speaker 7: I'm like, oh, see right there.
- 26:22Speaker 10: Handsome you just edit this shit out I almost hoped
- 26:26Speaker 10: for pan and scan just so they could cut out
- 26:28Speaker 10: a lot of the shit that I didn't want to
- 26:30Speaker 10: see blasphemy I know right it was so ridiculous it
- 26:34Speaker 10: was just chock full of I could every time Karl
- 26:38Speaker 10: Urban came I just laughed I'm like really wow just
- 26:43Speaker 10: overacting was just ridiculous but I love him what else
- 26:48Speaker 10: did I watch The Horde it was alright I give
- 26:52Speaker 10: it that much. There's a lot of reading.
- 26:54Speaker 7: It's one of them there French movies.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Reading in zombies.
- 26:57Speaker 10: It was alright.
- 26:59Speaker 7: I'm not really sure how I feel about it now.
- 27:00Speaker 10: I think I liked it at the time when I
- 27:02Speaker 10: watched it a couple days ago, but now I'm like, hmm.
- 27:05Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 27:06Speaker 7: Boyfriend was confused. Jay came by. I was like, what
- 27:08Speaker 7: the hell are you watching? Sounds like they're talking Klingon.
- 27:12Speaker 7: I'm like, no, it's just an angry black French guy.
- 27:15Speaker 10: Sorry.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Not or.
- 27:17Speaker 10: No, not at all. I can't think if I did
- 27:19Speaker 10: anything else. Oh, yeah, I don't have much to say
- 27:21Speaker 10: about The Horde, really. There was some scenes in there
- 27:25Speaker 10: that were really impressive. It just, it starts off a
- 27:29Speaker 10: different movie. It starts off like a cop and mob movie,
- 27:32Speaker 10: because apparently the mafia guys killed the police officer, and
- 27:36Speaker 10: so the police officers want to go get their revenge
- 27:38Speaker 10: on the mob guys, so they go into this, I
- 27:40Speaker 10: guess it's like a big abandoned old apartment complex or whatever.
- 27:44Speaker 10: There's still like a few tenants in it, because they
- 27:46Speaker 10: just kind of took over, because that's what they do,
- 27:47Speaker 10: I guess. And then while they're trying to get their revenge,
- 27:52Speaker 10: they pretty much get all shot up and shit.
- 27:55Speaker 7: And then zombies show up. Zombie damn.
- 27:57Speaker 10: Then the bad guys and the good guys start working together.
- 28:00Speaker 10: And it's wackiness and shenanigans and a lot of dead people.
- 28:05Speaker 8: A lot.
- 28:07Speaker 14: All right.
- 28:09Speaker 10: Yeah, that's all I got.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Anything else before we head back into the convention?
- 28:14Speaker 1: Nope.
- 28:14Speaker 10: All righty.
- 28:17Speaker 7: I like totals. There you go.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Alright, we will head back in and see what's going
- 28:24Speaker 2: on at Wonderfest.
- 28:26Speaker 4: I wonder, wonder who wrote the book of love.
- 28:34Speaker 15: Tell me, tell me, tell me who wrote the book
- 28:37Speaker 15: of love.
- 28:39Speaker 2: I've got to know.
- 28:40Speaker 4: The answer or there's someone from above.
- 28:43Speaker 6: I wonder, wonder who.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Please remember to replace the speaker on the post when
- 28:54Speaker 3: you leave the theater. Flesh crawls. Blood curdles. The coffin
- 29:01Speaker 3: hasn't been built that can hold him.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Dr.
- 29:04Speaker 3: Fives rises again.
- 29:05Speaker 12: Fives, wait!
- 29:09Speaker 2: Dr.
- 29:10Speaker 3: Fives rises again in an even more startling motion picture
- 29:13Speaker 3: with a whole new gallery of gruesome gimmicks of torture
- 29:17Speaker 3: and murder. See the scorpions embrace. The eagles caress. The
- 29:24Speaker 3: sausage machine. See Dr. Fives out-duel his enemies with the
- 29:28Speaker 3: most diabolical devices ever created. See Dr. Fives rises again,
- 29:34Speaker 3: starring Vincent Price as the menacing Fives and Robert Quarry
- 29:38Speaker 3: as the evil Biderback.
- 30:15Speaker 6: Going, going.
- 30:19Speaker 5: It's time for another installment of The Art of Being
- 30:23Speaker 5: a Movie Geek.
- 30:24Speaker 2: All right, we're here with artist Belle Dee.
- 30:27Speaker 8: I guess just as we go through this series on artists,
- 30:31Speaker 8: just try to figure out how you end up where
- 30:34Speaker 8: you are.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Were you always interested in art, even as a kid?
- 30:37Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, absolutely. I used to watch Saturday morning cartoons
- 30:41Speaker 4: all the time, Disney movies, whatever. So a lot of
- 30:44Speaker 4: my art is very inspired by, like, animation style.
- 30:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:48Speaker 4: So, and caricature work.
- 30:51Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Is it something you... planned on doing you know as
- 30:55Speaker 2: far as professionally.
- 30:56Speaker 4: Um no not really and i'm only halfway professionally there
- 31:02Speaker 4: aren't we all so um i'm i'm just amazed and
- 31:08Speaker 4: overwhelmed at the response that i've gotten to the work
- 31:11Speaker 4: that i've shared with people on the internet.
- 31:16Speaker 8: It's always good when it sort of clicks with people
- 31:18Speaker 8: and they kind of find it. But again, you do
- 31:20Speaker 8: some good work. It's good to see people appreciate stuff.
- 31:24Speaker 8: And it's kind of original in the way you approach it.
- 31:29Speaker 8: Is it something you studied extensively or is.
- 31:31Speaker 2: It more of a self-taught kind of thing?
- 31:33Speaker 4: It's absolutely self-taught. I did take some art classes but
- 31:40Speaker 4: I mean, I just kind of did what I did.
- 31:42Speaker 4: I didn't really learn any sort of techniques. Actually, I
- 31:48Speaker 4: work in Adobe Illustrator, so I had a job where
- 31:51Speaker 4: I worked and I had to draw maps and things
- 31:54Speaker 4: like that, logos. So I learned a lot about how
- 31:56Speaker 4: to use Illustrator through on-work job experience, and I just
- 32:00Speaker 4: applied it to my sketch drawings, and that's how I
- 32:03Speaker 4: kind of got the style.
- 32:04Speaker 1: That I have now.
- 32:05Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 32:06Speaker 8: Yeah, I've found most of the artists I'm drawn to
- 32:09Speaker 8: when I talk to them are self-taught.
- 32:11Speaker 2: I think you sort of find yourself better that way.
- 32:15Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 32:15Speaker 2: It seems like it's always more original, the people that
- 32:18Speaker 2: are like that.
- 32:20Speaker 8: I guess you had already mentioned, I was going to
- 32:23Speaker 8: see as far as your style, if it was something
- 32:25Speaker 8: specific that drew you to that look or that style,
- 32:28Speaker 8: but you were saying cartoons?
- 32:29Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:31Speaker 4: Just cartoons and animation and... any kind of caricature work.
- 32:36Speaker 4: I'm a big Al Hirschfeld fan, so that kind of style,
- 32:40Speaker 4: I was like, I want to do that, you know.
- 32:43Speaker 8: Did you know enough about, like, artists and animators to
- 32:47Speaker 8: know them by name when you were a kid?
- 32:49Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 32:49Speaker 2: That's pretty hardcore.
- 32:50Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 32:51Speaker 4: I was obsessed with Don Bluth for, like, the longest time,
- 32:55Speaker 4: and then, like, after American Tail came out, because I,
- 32:58Speaker 4: you know, they released Secret of the M, and I
- 32:59Speaker 4: was a big Secret of the M fan, and then...
- 33:02Speaker 4: American Tail came out and I was like, this is
- 33:04Speaker 4: getting a little sugary for me. I don't know, like,
- 33:07Speaker 4: because Secret was so dark.
- 33:09Speaker 8: Yeah, that's why I always liked it. It's, yeah, that
- 33:11Speaker 8: whole creepy overtones. Yeah, you kind of lose when Fievel
- 33:14Speaker 8: comes on.
- 33:15Speaker 13: Exactly.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 33:18Speaker 4: And then, of course, like, when I started getting a little, like,
- 33:21Speaker 4: older into, like, my teenage years, I was still, like,
- 33:24Speaker 4: watching other cartoons, but then that's when I started getting into, like,
- 33:27Speaker 4: heavy metal and, like, rock and roll and other, all
- 33:31Speaker 4: these kind of movies that are not really geared towards
- 33:34Speaker 4: little kids but adults and um so i was like
- 33:38Speaker 4: really excited about that because it's like oh wow there's
- 33:42Speaker 4: naked ladies in a cartoon movie wow this.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Is not for kids anymore.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Exactly they're cursing.
- 33:51Speaker 8: That definitely yeah i remember yeah the first few times
- 33:54Speaker 8: i saw that as a kid i was like wait
- 33:57Speaker 8: wait it's like it doesn't process it but they.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Don't do this on cartoons on Saturday morning. So, had
- 34:04Speaker 2: you also always been a movie fan in general?
- 34:07Speaker 4: Um, yeah, and I've always been a horror movie fan
- 34:10Speaker 4: probably from the time that I was like, like sixth
- 34:12Speaker 4: grade or something. That's kind of when I started and
- 34:15Speaker 4: nobody in my family really watched horror movies so I
- 34:18Speaker 4: kind of had to just sort of fall into it
- 34:20Speaker 4: on my own.
- 34:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:22Speaker 4: And, um, you know, I grew up watching slasher movies
- 34:26Speaker 4: that was all like Friday the 13th and, um, you know,
- 34:30Speaker 4: sleepaway camp and all that kind of stuff. And it
- 34:32Speaker 4: wasn't until I was about, you know, 19, 18, 19,
- 34:35Speaker 4: that I watched Dracula Has Risen from the Grave, the
- 34:40Speaker 4: Hammer film, for the first time. And then after that,
- 34:43Speaker 4: it was just, it was all Hammer. And then I
- 34:45Speaker 4: had to go back and, like, watch all the Universal
- 34:48Speaker 4: films and all that. And I was just like, oh,
- 34:50Speaker 4: it's like a whole new world. Why didn't somebody tell
- 34:53Speaker 4: me about this? And it was just because there wasn't anybody.
- 34:56Speaker 2: To at the time.
- 34:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:59Speaker 8: So at what point did you decide to sort of
- 35:01Speaker 8: cross over and work the movies and your love of
- 35:05Speaker 8: movies and horror into the artwork?
- 35:08Speaker 4: That's a good question.
- 35:09Speaker 2: I don't really remember.
- 35:11Speaker 4: I think originally I had this idea that I wanted
- 35:15Speaker 4: to do pin-up style art, like cheesecake kind of style.
- 35:21Speaker 4: And then as much as I like to draw pretty girls,
- 35:25Speaker 4: it kind of got boring and I was like, you know,
- 35:28Speaker 4: I want to try something that has a little more
- 35:30Speaker 4: depth and interest. So I just started, like, drawing pictures of, like, Frankenstein,
- 35:35Speaker 4: and I was like, you know, I think I should
- 35:38Speaker 4: do more of this. And, of course, like, then I
- 35:42Speaker 4: was like, with the Hammer stuff, it's like, why haven't
- 35:45Speaker 4: I been doing this all along? I love Hammer, and
- 35:47Speaker 4: I love, like, art, like, cartoon art style. It's like,
- 35:51Speaker 4: why have I not been doing this?
- 35:53Speaker 2: Tie them all together.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 35:55Speaker 10: Exactly.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Do you still, I was going to say, what medium?
- 35:59Speaker 8: I guess at this point you can almost be exclusively digital,
- 36:03Speaker 8: but do you still start off with, like, pencil drawings? Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 36:07Speaker 4: It's always just sit down with a sketchbook and sketch
- 36:11Speaker 4: out what I want to draw, and then I pretty
- 36:14Speaker 4: much just, like, redraw it in Illustrator, and that gives
- 36:18Speaker 4: me the option to, like, you know, change colors. If
- 36:21Speaker 4: I don't have a definite idea about what I'm going
- 36:23Speaker 4: to do, I'm, I can go in there and like
- 36:24Speaker 4: play with it a little, which makes it fun.
- 36:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:28Speaker 8: You've been a contributor to Little Shop of Horrors and now, um,
- 36:32Speaker 8: Rumorg you just got.
- 36:33Speaker 2: So I mean, those, and the Rumorg is great by
- 36:35Speaker 2: the way.
- 36:35Speaker 10: Oh, thanks.
- 36:36Speaker 2: That was awesome.
- 36:37Speaker 8: Um, so is it, is it something you're looking to
- 36:40Speaker 8: do just more like covers or is it, again, did
- 36:42Speaker 8: you just kind of fall into that?
- 36:44Speaker 4: I have just kind of fallen into it. Actually, um,
- 36:50Speaker 4: And I don't know, like, I'd like to keep it fun. Like,
- 36:55Speaker 4: the minute that it becomes not fun for me anymore,
- 36:59Speaker 4: I don't know that it's... I'm afraid that that might happen,
- 37:03Speaker 4: so I'm trying to, like, you know, I want to
- 37:06Speaker 4: take some time off to do some more personal work.
- 37:09Speaker 4: Because it's been a while, I've been doing stuff for
- 37:11Speaker 4: other people, and it's like, I'd like to take some
- 37:14Speaker 4: time and get back into, like, I just want to
- 37:17Speaker 4: do this for fun.
- 37:17Speaker 2: So.
- 37:19Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 37:20Speaker 4: I just kind of take it as it comes and
- 37:23Speaker 4: see how it goes. I don't really have any... I
- 37:26Speaker 4: had a goal of getting in Remorg and that's already happened,
- 37:28Speaker 4: so now I have to set something else. I don't
- 37:31Speaker 4: know what that's going to be yet.
- 37:33Speaker 8: Still working on that one. Other than that, is there
- 37:37Speaker 8: anything else you're working on? Any other big projects?
- 37:41Speaker 4: I think the only other thing that I know for
- 37:43Speaker 4: sure that's coming up is the Monsterverse comics are publishing
- 37:49Speaker 4: a it's a hammer style book called flesh and blood. And, um,
- 37:54Speaker 4: I was asked to do a pinup piece for, of
- 37:57Speaker 4: some of the characters like, um, and I don't know
- 37:59Speaker 4: if it's going to be the issue that's coming out
- 38:01Speaker 4: in October or I think it's one of four.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:05Speaker 4: So, um, I don't know exactly which, which issue that's
- 38:09Speaker 4: coming out in, but, um, I'm looking forward to that. Uh,
- 38:13Speaker 4: sexy vampire ladies. So that's going to be fun to draw.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Can't go wrong with that. Yeah. Let's see, we also
- 38:20Speaker 2: do just kind of our show.
- 38:23Speaker 8: We ongoingly continue to tell people what we like to watch,
- 38:26Speaker 8: what we have been watching. Just in general, what type
- 38:28Speaker 8: of stuff do you like to watch or have you
- 38:30Speaker 8: been watching lately?
- 38:32Speaker 2: Well, let's see.
- 38:35Speaker 10: I had to watch Dr.
- 38:37Speaker 4: Jekyll and Sister Hyde to get myself freshened up for
- 38:41Speaker 4: Martine Beswick when I saw her.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Yep.
- 38:44Speaker 4: And actually, since I've been so busy, the only thing
- 38:47Speaker 4: that I've really watched is I discovered this show called
- 38:50Speaker 4: League of Gentlemen. It's a British show, and it's kind
- 38:53Speaker 4: of got this weird dark horror element and comedy, and
- 38:56Speaker 4: I'm really enjoying it. So hopefully I'll get to watch
- 39:00Speaker 4: the second and third season pretty soon, like, when I
- 39:03Speaker 4: get back.
- 39:04Speaker 2: I've heard pretty good things about that, yeah.
- 39:05Speaker 4: Yeah, it's really good. It's... actually more disturbing than I
- 39:10Speaker 4: thought it was going to be.
- 39:11Speaker 13: I was like, wow.
- 39:13Speaker 2: They get away with a lot on BBC.
- 39:15Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely.
- 39:17Speaker 8: I guess just as far as you want people to
- 39:20Speaker 8: go check your workout online, or where would you send
- 39:22Speaker 8: them to go?
- 39:23Speaker 4: Probably the best place to go would be, I have
- 39:25Speaker 4: a blog, and it's Do Whackadoodles. and it's dowhackadoodles.blogspot.com and
- 39:36Speaker 4: any information like whenever I get the website up and
- 39:41Speaker 4: I have an online store that I'm going to be
- 39:42Speaker 4: working on that will all be detailed like in the
- 39:46Speaker 4: sidebar when that all comes to pass.
- 39:49Speaker 2: I'll definitely put a link to that in there because,
- 39:51Speaker 2: I don't know, I've been trying to type it in. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah,
- 39:55Speaker 2: we'll throw that in the notes on this show. I
- 39:59Speaker 2: think that is it, unless you have anything else you
- 40:01Speaker 2: want to pass on to people.
- 40:02Speaker 4: Oh, I don't know. I guess that's it.
- 40:06Speaker 11: All right.
- 40:06Speaker 2: Thank you for talking with us today.
- 40:07Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 40:10Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 40:29Speaker 17: So yeah, I won't bother playing the promo this week
- 40:39Speaker 17: because I'm going to be the promo.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Guess what I've got. Here, I'll show you. These are my...
- 40:46Speaker 2: Fanciest hell earphone thingies.
- 40:48Speaker 9: Tweaked audio earbuds. So I finally, I'd had my other
- 40:52Speaker 9: ones and I was just like, they were just crappy
- 40:54Speaker 9: ones I bought at like a department store of some sort.
- 40:58Speaker 9: And I was just like, oh, whatever.
- 41:00Speaker 2: I've got these. I guess I'll let them go until then.
- 41:02Speaker 2: And those things were falling apart.
- 41:03Speaker 9: Like, seriously, that last week, there was, like, wires hanging
- 41:07Speaker 9: out where the speaker was.
- 41:08Speaker 7: That sounds nice.
- 41:10Speaker 2: And you can kind of get jolted from those. Don't
- 41:12Speaker 2: get jolted by your headphones. I'm just saying. It's just
- 41:15Speaker 2: a basic thing. It's not good.
- 41:17Speaker 7: And they're shiny, too.
- 41:18Speaker 2: These, yeah.
- 41:20Speaker 8: I have to say, and I will, you know, normally
- 41:22Speaker 8: I wouldn't go on about something that I didn't have
- 41:24Speaker 8: something personally to say about it, but I've had them
- 41:27Speaker 8: this past week, and I've been impressed with them.
- 41:29Speaker 2: They actually are.
- 41:31Speaker 9: They sound really good, and they've got a little more
- 41:34Speaker 9: weight to them, too. The ones I had before were, like,
- 41:37Speaker 9: little cheap plastic. Like, this actually feels like there's something there.
- 41:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:41Speaker 2: It's like it's little sound cannons. It's, like, a little longer, too,
- 41:45Speaker 2: and it actually, like, fits in, and it feels like
- 41:47Speaker 2: they're actually doing something.
- 41:49Speaker 7: And they're shiny.
- 41:50Speaker 2: They don't have to be shiny. They come in seven colors,
- 41:54Speaker 2: if I remember correctly.
- 41:55Speaker 7: But they're shiny.
- 41:55Speaker 2: These are silver. They match the MP3 player.
- 42:00Speaker 9: But, yeah, otherwise, I just, yeah, I wanted to throw
- 42:04Speaker 9: my two cents in with a personal version of it,
- 42:07Speaker 9: aside from just playing the ad week in and week out. Yeah,
- 42:10Speaker 9: I got my Tweaked Audio earbuds this week, and they
- 42:13Speaker 9: are actually pretty damn impressive. So go to tweakedaudio.com, put
- 42:17Speaker 9: in your fancy code MELTDOWN, and you'll get 33% off
- 42:21Speaker 9: and free shipping.
- 42:22Speaker 13: Hell yeah.
- 42:23Speaker 5: What more do you want?
- 42:23Speaker 10: You can't beat that with a goddamn stick.
- 42:25Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying.
- 42:26Speaker 10: Hell yeah.
- 42:27Speaker 2: So go get some, tweakedaudio.com. My personal plug is now commenced. Okay,
- 42:37Speaker 2: anything else?
- 42:37Speaker 10: Ear plug plug?
- 42:38Speaker 2: Ear plug plug. I get it.
- 42:41Speaker 10: I'm pretty proud of that one. Right off the top
- 42:44Speaker 10: of my head, you can't make this shit up like that.
- 42:46Speaker 2: I don't know if I'd be as proud of that
- 42:48Speaker 2: as you are. Anything else before we head back in?
- 42:52Speaker 7: That should be their new logo. Ear plug plugs.
- 42:56Speaker 2: I think they're buds more than plugs. Plugs means nothing
- 43:00Speaker 2: gets in.
- 43:02Speaker 7: Nothing gets out either.
- 43:02Speaker 13: Every moment, every single day.
- 43:27Speaker 2: So if you're wondering what I do, the.
- 43:31Speaker 13: Things I do.
- 43:31Speaker 2: We're here with Carole Monroe.
- 43:33Speaker 8: You were born in England. Would it be far-fetched to
- 43:37Speaker 8: say you weren't planning on going into performing early on?
- 43:41Speaker 2: It's not something you set out to do?
- 43:43Speaker 16: I actually didn't set out to become an actor or actress. No,
- 43:48Speaker 16: it couldn't have been further from my thoughts. I thought
- 43:52Speaker 16: if I was going to do anything when I left school,
- 43:54Speaker 16: it would be to do with art. So I suppose
- 43:58Speaker 16: it's another form of art, really.
- 44:00Speaker 2: What type did you do, like painting?
- 44:03Speaker 16: Love painting, painting, anything to do with making stuff, you know,
- 44:09Speaker 16: with my hands. So very hands-on, and I'm very pleased
- 44:12Speaker 16: to say that my daughters have that.
- 44:15Speaker 13: They are so talented, actually. I don't think I was
- 44:17Speaker 13: actually very good.
- 44:18Speaker 16: I enjoyed it, but I was enthusiastic, but I don't know,
- 44:24Speaker 16: you know, how clever I was at it.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Do you still try on occasion?
- 44:28Speaker 13: No. I don't. I don't know whether.
- 44:31Speaker 8: As far as once you got into acting, what I
- 44:34Speaker 8: know fell into it through the modeling.
- 44:37Speaker 2: So I guess the first big role would be like
- 44:40Speaker 2: the Dr.
- 44:40Speaker 8: Five films.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Not much of a speaking part.
- 44:44Speaker 13: One of my most difficult parts.
- 44:47Speaker 2: How did you get involved in those? For Dr.
- 44:50Speaker 13: Fives, I think I got through the producers seeing.
- 44:57Speaker 16: I was under contract for Hammer for a year, and
- 45:00Speaker 16: I think they'd seen some of my work in the
- 45:02Speaker 16: Hammer films, so they thought I might be a suitable
- 45:05Speaker 16: candidate to play Vincent's wife.
- 45:08Speaker 13: And Hammer didn't particularly... I mean.
- 45:11Speaker 16: They weren't mad on me doing that because I was
- 45:13Speaker 16: doing Hammer films, but they let me go uncredited.
- 45:16Speaker 13: I didn't have a credit in the films. Then again,
- 45:19Speaker 13: I didn't have a very big part, did I?
- 45:20Speaker 2: It was kind of instrumental.
- 45:23Speaker 16: Kind of, yes, because it all kind of went around her,
- 45:26Speaker 16: didn't it?
- 45:26Speaker 2: It did, certainly, yeah.
- 45:27Speaker 13: He had such a passion for his wife.
- 45:29Speaker 2: He set it all in motion.
- 45:30Speaker 13: Yeah, I suppose it did, really, yes.
- 45:32Speaker 2: As far as like Dracula, 1872. Yeah.
- 45:36Speaker 13: Oh, I loved working on that.
- 45:38Speaker 16: It gave me, it was a small role. But it
- 45:42Speaker 16: gave me a chance to work with Christopher.
- 45:44Speaker 13: Lee and Peter Cushing, so that was a must.
- 45:49Speaker 16: I feel I've been very fortunate that I've worked with
- 45:52Speaker 16: some wonderful, amazing, iconic men in the horror genre. So
- 46:00Speaker 16: I've been very lucky. I don't know how it happened,
- 46:02Speaker 16: but I'm not complaining. No, amazing to work on that film.
- 46:07Speaker 13: It's funny because... During the making.
- 46:10Speaker 16: Of Dracula, I suddenly realized, I'd been working for a
- 46:16Speaker 16: few years in film, but I suddenly realized that that
- 46:20Speaker 16: was the moment that I actually wanted to learn more,
- 46:25Speaker 16: study more, and really try and learn about my craft.
- 46:29Speaker 16: So that was my turning point, I suppose, with Dracula A.D.
- 46:34Speaker 2: And then what was it like working with? Peter Cushing
- 46:37Speaker 2: and Christopher Lee.
- 46:38Speaker 11: Oh, wow.
- 46:39Speaker 16: Working with those two. It was quite, I suppose I
- 46:43Speaker 16: was very nervous. I mean, I was young, but also
- 46:46Speaker 16: very nervous. And I felt totally inexperienced because I hadn't
- 46:50Speaker 16: been to drama school per se and I hadn't, you know,
- 46:54Speaker 16: trod the boards that much. But what I'd done is
- 46:58Speaker 16: I'd started out as an extra in.
- 47:01Speaker 13: Casino Royale way back.
- 47:03Speaker 16: So I'd kind of done a lot of my learning,
- 47:06Speaker 16: been sitting on the side of the set watching these
- 47:09Speaker 16: wonderful people work. So I was delighted, basically, and to
- 47:14Speaker 16: be working with those two.
- 47:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:16Speaker 16: I actually was very lucky because I got to work
- 47:18Speaker 16: with Peter again in Appiah School.
- 47:21Speaker 8: I was going to ask you about that. Were there
- 47:22Speaker 8: any stories or anything from Appiah School? It seemed like
- 47:25Speaker 8: a lot of action and activity going on.
- 47:28Speaker 13: There was a lot of action. You're right.
- 47:29Speaker 16: The amazing thing was it all took part in Pinewood Studios.
- 47:36Speaker 13: No locations.
- 47:37Speaker 16: They didn't build this wonderful set in Pinewood. So we
- 47:44Speaker 16: didn't leave the studio for about five weeks. We didn't
- 47:46Speaker 16: see the light of day. We were meant to be
- 47:49Speaker 16: under the earth anyway, so at the earth's core.
- 47:53Speaker 2: I guess that would be pretty.
- 47:54Speaker 13: Yeah, a good title for that.
- 47:56Speaker 2: How about Captain Kronos?
- 47:58Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 47:59Speaker 2: Would that be last in the Hammer series?
- 48:03Speaker 13: I think they did several more after that.
- 48:05Speaker 2: With you.
- 48:05Speaker 13: Oh, with me it was. And with me it was
- 48:07Speaker 13: one of my absolute favorites. I love that film.
- 48:11Speaker 16: I just think Brian Clemens did such a wonderful job
- 48:15Speaker 16: in the writing and also the directing.
- 48:17Speaker 13: I don't know why he didn't go on.
- 48:19Speaker 16: And do more stuff, but he did a brilliant job.
- 48:23Speaker 16: And I do think that film, I saw it actually
- 48:28Speaker 16: last year in a place called Whitby.
- 48:31Speaker 13: In England they had a.
- 48:32Speaker 16: Film festival there sort of a horror film festival and
- 48:36Speaker 16: Cronus was one of the films they showed I just
- 48:39Speaker 16: think it's a brilliant piece of film very underestimated at
- 48:43Speaker 16: the time and it's it's kind of not dated there's
- 48:48Speaker 16: nothing really to date it you know it just it
- 48:51Speaker 16: just has a life of its own and I really
- 48:55Speaker 16: I was honoured to be a part of that film
- 48:58Speaker 16: yeah I was.
- 48:59Speaker 8: Going to say you'd Before that, I guess you'd done
- 49:02Speaker 8: a lot of, like, the classic, you know, Hammer Horror
- 49:04Speaker 8: and the old stuff, and then you found a lot
- 49:06Speaker 8: of fantasy and stuff. And then, like, in the 80s,
- 49:08Speaker 8: you sort of switched into the new style of horror.
- 49:11Speaker 8: So what, I guess, how did that come about, you know,
- 49:14Speaker 8: falling into, like, more of the slasher genre?
- 49:16Speaker 16: Well, you i suppose if i think back it came
- 49:19Speaker 16: about via joe spinel that was the connecting thing we
- 49:23Speaker 16: we did a film together in in um well we
- 49:27Speaker 16: did star crash yeah um he was the baddie in
- 49:30Speaker 16: that the evil count zarfan and then we went on
- 49:34Speaker 16: to do another.
- 49:35Speaker 13: Film Or was that after?
- 49:37Speaker 2: I think Maniac was next.
- 49:38Speaker 16: I think Maniac was next and then the last horror film.
- 49:42Speaker 16: It really came about by me being in New York
- 49:46Speaker 16: and Joe's leading actress not turning up.
- 49:49Speaker 13: She was busy.
- 49:50Speaker 16: Daria Nicolodi was busy shooting another film and they needed
- 49:54Speaker 16: somebody really quickly and I just happened to be there
- 49:58Speaker 16: attending a show and Joe said.
- 50:01Speaker 13: He said, what do you think about doing a film?
- 50:04Speaker 13: I said, well, when? He said, well, tomorrow. I said, what?
- 50:10Speaker 13: He said, well, we start tomorrow. Would you like to?
- 50:12Speaker 16: I said, sure. That's a big thing. He said, read
- 50:15Speaker 16: the script tonight. Let me know five o'clock in the morning.
- 50:19Speaker 16: So I read the script, literally slept on the script.
- 50:23Speaker 13: And I thought, well, I adore Joe.
- 50:25Speaker 16: And I'd met Bill. I liked Bill very much. He'd
- 50:28Speaker 16: taken me to see Halloween. which was quite an eye-opener,
- 50:32Speaker 16: quite kind of groundbreaking. And he said, this is the
- 50:35Speaker 16: kind of film I want to make. So I thought, well,
- 50:39Speaker 16: nothing ventured, nothing gained, so why not? So all in all,
- 50:43Speaker 16: I said yes.
- 50:44Speaker 8: So how did you adjust to that new style as
- 50:47Speaker 8: far as being in the middle.
- 50:48Speaker 2: Of it all?
- 50:49Speaker 16: It took quite a big adjustment, I think, really, because
- 50:52Speaker 16: it was so different from the gothic horror. You'd be suddenly...
- 50:57Speaker 16: It was kind of quite in-your-face horror. So it was
- 51:02Speaker 16: a different sort of way. It was a different era, really.
- 51:05Speaker 16: And it was a much younger audience. You know, Bill
- 51:08Speaker 16: was young. People were young and enthusiastic. And it was
- 51:15Speaker 16: work for me. And it was interesting work. So I thought, well,
- 51:18Speaker 16: why not? You know, the work is there. And it's
- 51:21Speaker 16: something I'm still acting and doing my passion.
- 51:24Speaker 13: So I might as well go with that. And then.
- 51:30Speaker 8: Again you said you worked with the last horror film
- 51:32Speaker 8: you got to work with Joe Spinelli I did I
- 51:35Speaker 8: guess you worked well together it was like three I.
- 51:38Speaker 16: Think we got on well we did the three and
- 51:40Speaker 16: we were going to plan to do more but sadly
- 51:43Speaker 16: he passed away too young but no he was brilliant
- 51:49Speaker 16: to work with I must say fabulous actor.
- 51:52Speaker 13: An amazing actor.
- 51:55Speaker 16: Just, I think it was De Niro who said he's
- 51:57Speaker 16: one of the best character actors of that time, you know,
- 52:04Speaker 16: on screen.
- 52:05Speaker 2: Underrated, yeah.
- 52:06Speaker 13: Totally, totally.
- 52:07Speaker 8: And the one to ask about was then when you
- 52:09Speaker 8: got to work with Luigi again.
- 52:11Speaker 2: In Black Cat.
- 52:12Speaker 13: That was wonderful. I mean, that was kind of came
- 52:14Speaker 13: out of the blue again.
- 52:15Speaker 16: He contacted me and he said, how about, you know,
- 52:19Speaker 16: working together?
- 52:20Speaker 13: And because we've had such a good and.
- 52:22Speaker 16: Long working relationship on star price i thought yes you
- 52:27Speaker 16: know it'd be another foray into a european film which
- 52:31Speaker 16: i love i was getting older uh um and also
- 52:36Speaker 16: i i find that european filmmakers kind of respect that
- 52:40Speaker 16: maybe more than english you know more than once you're
- 52:46Speaker 16: past 30 they don't this is this is then they
- 52:50Speaker 16: don't um You know, you're not put out to grass.
- 52:53Speaker 13: They'll kind of give you another chance.
- 52:54Speaker 2: It's very different than American film.
- 52:56Speaker 13: It's different. I was trying to pad around it, and
- 52:59Speaker 13: I thought, what?
- 52:59Speaker 2: No, I'll call them. You know what I mean?
- 53:00Speaker 13: Unless you've had all your face lifted and tucked. Which
- 53:03Speaker 13: is scary. I can't do that.
- 53:04Speaker 2: I don't like that anyway.
- 53:05Speaker 16: No, I'm not mad. I mean, each to their own,
- 53:09Speaker 16: of course. But it's a different route. And I love
- 53:13Speaker 16: European film. I always have done. I always love the
- 53:16Speaker 16: French cinema. Yeah. In the 60s, I thought they were
- 53:19Speaker 16: so clever and ahead of their time.
- 53:22Speaker 13: And again, it's.
- 53:23Speaker 16: The passion they put into the work. So European film
- 53:27Speaker 16: cinema it was for me. In fact, I'm going back
- 53:33Speaker 16: to do a Spanish film in November, this November.
- 53:37Speaker 13: So I'm very excited. A Spanish Western. That should be great.
- 53:41Speaker 16: I kind of started doing Westerns with in Talent for
- 53:45Speaker 16: Loving with.
- 53:46Speaker 13: Richard Widmark and Topol.
- 53:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:48Speaker 13: That's a long time ago. There it is. 68.
- 53:53Speaker 2: Well, I think that was about it.
- 53:55Speaker 8: I guess I was going to ask what you were
- 53:56Speaker 8: working on, but you got that. Is there anything else
- 53:57Speaker 8: you want to tell people about?
- 54:00Speaker 16: Just, do we say we're here in Louisville and we're
- 54:04Speaker 16: at the Wonderfest, which is an amazing show, so if
- 54:08Speaker 16: you get a chance, come and see it.
- 54:09Speaker 2: Definitely.
- 54:10Speaker 1: It's been awesome.
- 54:10Speaker 16: Also, I'm still around and And I still have the
- 54:14Speaker 16: acting bug or the passion.
- 54:17Speaker 13: Can people come.
- 54:18Speaker 2: And find you at your website?
- 54:20Speaker 13: Yes, you can.
- 54:21Speaker 10: You can.
- 54:22Speaker 13: I don't know.
- 54:23Speaker 11: Tell me.
- 54:24Speaker 2: I think I had it at carolynmonroe.org. That's it.
- 54:27Speaker 13: That's the website, is it?
- 54:28Speaker 1: Yes.
- 54:29Speaker 4: All right.
- 54:29Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 54:30Speaker 2: Tell them to find that.
- 54:31Speaker 13: Thank you very much.
- 54:32Speaker 2: Thank you very much. Thanks for talking with us today.
- 54:35Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 54:42Speaker 16: Hi, this is famous Hollywood producer Robert Evans.
- 54:50Speaker 8: You know, I've made a lot of powerful enemies during
- 54:56Speaker 8: my time in Hollywood.
- 55:07Speaker 18: Like the time I pushed Steve McQueen in front of
- 55:09Speaker 18: a moving car on the set of The Getaway because
- 55:11Speaker 18: he was macking on my lady, Allie McGraw. But I've
- 55:16Speaker 18: made one great friend, a bopper friend if you will.
- 55:19Speaker 2: Since I retired.
- 55:21Speaker 18: It's called Show Show, and it's the best fucking movie
- 55:24Speaker 18: podcast ever. It's even better than cocaine, which I would
- 55:29Speaker 18: know a lot about.
- 55:32Speaker 2: Visit Show Show at showshow.podomatic.com or search Show Show, all
- 55:36Speaker 2: one word, in the iTunes store.
- 55:47Speaker 10: Hello, this is Peter Mayhew, listening to Movie Mountain Down.
- 56:00Speaker 6: Baby, don't you ever wonder why Backup is not that
- 56:08Speaker 6: I think I'm clever I just know that we could
- 56:11Speaker 6: do much better Baby, don't you ever wonder.
- 56:15Speaker 8: Why We're here with Loren Peterson. How do you bill yourself,
- 56:19Speaker 8: I guess, at this point? I mean, you're certainly well-experienced
- 56:23Speaker 8: in the effects world, but I guess what's the title
- 56:25Speaker 8: you go by as far as a job description?
- 56:28Speaker 5: I was a model shop supervisor.
- 56:29Speaker 8: Supervisor.
- 56:30Speaker 5: And probably before that, I was a chief model maker.
- 56:32Speaker 8: I guess I usually try to go back and see
- 56:35Speaker 8: what the beginnings are for most people in the industry.
- 56:38Speaker 8: As a kid, were you a big movie fan or.
- 56:42Speaker 5: You know, I wasn't an extreme movie fan or anything
- 56:44Speaker 5: like that. I know many of the people I work
- 56:46Speaker 5: with saw all those kind of films. Creature from Black Lagoon,
- 56:51Speaker 5: King Kong kind of things. And I saw them, but
- 56:54Speaker 5: probably as a kid I was more interested in westerns.
- 56:59Speaker 5: But I saw Space Patrol and Rocket Man and things
- 57:04Speaker 5: like that. Saturday serials, you know. But cowboy movies had
- 57:09Speaker 5: a big influence on me. I had my gun set
- 57:11Speaker 5: and my like Winchester and BB gun and all that.
- 57:14Speaker 10: Kind of thing.
- 57:16Speaker 8: At what point, I guess, did, uh, did modeling or
- 57:18Speaker 8: how did that take, take hold of you?
- 57:20Speaker 5: I guess, was that young or, uh, again, I, I was, uh,
- 57:26Speaker 5: I had certainly had model ships when there were pirate movies.
- 57:29Speaker 5: I had, uh, you know, car modified cars and, um,
- 57:33Speaker 5: that kind of stuff. But, um, It wasn't extreme. I
- 57:37Speaker 5: got into art and art and painting and drawing and
- 57:39Speaker 5: that kind of stuff and sculpting, and I did that
- 57:42Speaker 5: in high school. But the model-making thing really came later on.
- 57:46Speaker 5: I was in college and certainly had all the different skills,
- 57:51Speaker 5: physical skills, and I was certainly probably a better three-dimensional
- 57:56Speaker 5: artist than I was a two-dimensional artist. And I graduated
- 58:01Speaker 5: from school and was gone for a little bit. And
- 58:05Speaker 5: one of my professors was looking for me. I had
- 58:09Speaker 5: him for one class in industrial design, and some friend
- 58:14Speaker 5: said that Dave Tompkins has been looking for you, and
- 58:17Speaker 5: he wants to hire you to start in a business.
- 58:19Speaker 5: And I was like, wow, I wonder what that is,
- 58:21Speaker 5: because I needed a job. And so I got in
- 58:25Speaker 5: touch with him, and he said he was starting an
- 58:26Speaker 5: industrial design business, and he wanted me to work for him.
- 58:29Speaker 5: And I said, well, I don't. didn't study industrial design
- 58:33Speaker 5: he said i don't care you know you had one
- 58:35Speaker 5: class and and um let's uh let's start a business
- 58:39Speaker 5: and so that's what we did we did yeah we
- 58:42Speaker 5: did uh sanyo uh stereos we did uh yamaha uh
- 58:47Speaker 5: snowmobiles we did uh rockwell calculator we did uh all
- 58:55Speaker 5: kinds of stuff.
- 58:55Speaker 8: Like that just basic design for all.
- 58:57Speaker 5: Yeah yeah Yeah, and product development and that kind of thing.
- 59:02Speaker 5: I worked on a.
- 59:04Speaker 5: The Japanese sent a Japanese toilet one year, and we
- 59:08Speaker 5: had a contract to do six months of... development work
- 59:10Speaker 5: on it to try and make it flush more efficiently
- 59:13Speaker 5: with old bananas. We'd buy bananas and let them get
- 59:17Speaker 5: really ripe and then test it again and modify it
- 59:22Speaker 5: and test it again and all that stuff. So it
- 59:24Speaker 5: was that kind of project, so.
- 59:26Speaker 8: And then when did film cross into that business, I guess?
- 59:31Speaker 5: Well, I was doing sculpting. I was a good sculptor,
- 59:34Speaker 5: a reasonable sculptor, and I was doing McDonald's parks, the
- 59:37Speaker 5: Hamburglars and things like that with the swings under his
- 59:40Speaker 5: arm and doing the original patterns for those. And I
- 59:44Speaker 5: came across somebody I went to college with, and he
- 59:46Speaker 5: had said, you know, we're working on a science fiction
- 59:49Speaker 5: film out in the valley. and having a hard time
- 59:51Speaker 5: finding model makers, do you think that you want to
- 59:55Speaker 5: do something like that? And I was like, well, maybe.
- 59:58Speaker 5: I'll go out and see what it's like.
- 1:00:00Speaker 8: Little did you know. Little did I know.
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: Because I think we were hired just for two months
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: to start out and to solve a particular problem. It
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: was a problem with the Death Star, and I knew
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: I had industrial design experience, and so we were able
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: to apply that to the Death Star.
- 1:00:18Speaker 8: So I guess it was already... The production was well underway.
- 1:00:21Speaker 8: Had they already had a design team working on all that?
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: No, I'm not sure if it was well underway. I
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: think they started in June, and I started, I think,
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: in August. So they'd already started the Princess's ship, which
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: was supposed to be originally Han Solo's ship, but they
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: changed that later. There was only, like, maybe 30 people
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: there when I arrived, 25, 30 people or something like that.
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: So it was close enough to the beginning, but... The
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: design work is an ongoing kind of thing. Joe Johnson
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: was the art director, and Ralph McQuarrie was a designer also,
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: and George. But certain things were designed, but other things
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: weren't yet.
- 1:01:03Speaker 8: At what point, I guess, did you kind of take
- 1:01:06Speaker 8: a hand in designing things, or did you just kind
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: of come in and build at that point?
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: Well, designing. When you transfer things from two-dimension to three-dimension,
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: there is design work involved in that. And we took
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: sketches and then did our own drawings of right and
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: left and all that kind of stuff. But really the
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: design was done really in his head by George and
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: then by Joe Johnston, the art director after that, and
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: then to the model shop. But certainly we had a
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: hand in the way that things finally came out and looked.
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: But sometimes you'd get a real complete sketch or five
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: or six sketches. Other times you'd get a small little drawing.
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: head this direction kind of thing.
- 1:01:50Speaker 8: You could fill in the blanks.
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: Yeah, fill in the blanks.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: That's interesting.
- 1:01:53Speaker 8: Is there anything kind of big that you want to
- 1:01:56Speaker 8: lay claim to that you had a big hand in creating?
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: Well, yeah. I had a really big hand in creating
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: the Millennium Falcon.
- 1:02:04Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: And then also Slave I years later. And I say
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: Slave I because the model shop got bigger and bigger
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: at that time. And I was not having my hands
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: on as much. I was hitting the tops of the
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: waves without getting to spend a lot of time on
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: any particular ship. So when Slave I came along, I
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: was really enamored of the shapes of it, the design
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: of it and all that stuff. And so I kind
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: of set aside some time to make sure that I
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: actually participated as much as I could on the thing
- 1:02:36Speaker 5: while I was heading up the shop.
- 1:02:37Speaker 8: That one's very unconventional. The Millennium Falcon looks great, but yeah,
- 1:02:40Speaker 8: Slave I, just the design is so different.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: Yeah, real different.
- 1:02:45Speaker 8: As that went on, I guess, did you continue to
- 1:02:47Speaker 8: just head things up, or did you do a lot
- 1:02:49Speaker 8: more designing, like visual designing?
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: Well, me personally, I like to keep my hand in it.
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: I like to cut with an X-Acto knife and make
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: parts and glue parts and all that stuff. So even
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: as the shop got bigger and bigger, I still didn't
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: have a separate office or anything like that. I had
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: a desk just like everybody else. And, you know, I'd
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: have to split off and do budgeting and scheduling and
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: that kind of thing.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: But it was more like hitting the tops of the waves,
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: you know, doing some work here, dump some over there.
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: So I always had my hand in all the various ships,
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: but didn't get to work in as much depth as
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: I did in, let's say, the Millennium Falcon and the X-Wing,
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: as I did later on when Slate I and things
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: came along.
- 1:03:31Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:03:33Speaker 8: You've worked pretty much steadily since then on a lot
- 1:03:36Speaker 8: of different projects. How would you say, I mean, I
- 1:03:38Speaker 8: guess what is the biggest way that the industry has
- 1:03:40Speaker 8: changed over the years?
- 1:03:43Speaker 5: Well, CG came along. Computer graphics came along. And they
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: did an incredible job of doing composites. It can be
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: almost spotless compared to when you did blue screen. And
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: there were certainly more model makers on Sith than there were.
- 1:04:01Speaker 5: There were only seven on the first Star Wars. There
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: was almost 100 by the time we came to Sith.
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: So there was a lot more work during the Star
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: Wars series near the end. but we were a smaller
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: percentage of the whole. On the first show, we were
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: around 10% of the whole. And by the time we
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: reached Sith, we were more like 7% or something like
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: that of the whole. But we were of a bigger group.
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: There were 1,600 employees by the time we did Sith.
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: There was only about a total of 70 by the
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: time we did the first Star Wars. So that changed.
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: And right now, there isn't as much model work done
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: as there even was at the end of star wars
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: because it was that kind of movie so yeah and
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: then it's moving you know more of it's done in
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: new zealand now and it's done in england and places
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: that they give uh tax rebates on labor and you
- 1:04:53Speaker 5: know everybody's competing for that kind.
- 1:04:55Speaker 8: Of thing that's such a big part of it now.
- 1:04:58Speaker 5: Yeah it is a really big part of it and
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: you you wonder well are they gonna do work in
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: antarctica with uh penguins, they don't have to pay two
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: cents an hour.
- 1:05:07Speaker 8: If they give them enough tax break.
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: They'll figure out how to feed penguins fish in exchange
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: for CG work.
- 1:05:15Speaker 8: If somebody will do it, yeah, they'll find a PA
- 1:05:18Speaker 8: in charge of penguins alone. You mentioned CG. Is that something,
- 1:05:24Speaker 8: I mean, there is a good way to work it
- 1:05:26Speaker 8: in there, but are you not a fan of it?
- 1:05:30Speaker 8: At least on the low end scale of a bad
- 1:05:33Speaker 8: CG work? Well, it's a blessing and a curse.
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: Yeah. They do certainly incredible things. A model shop could
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: do incredible things too. Um, I'm not really in the
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: thick of it really anymore because I have retired two
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: years ago, but she does amazing things, you know, and
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: just the world changes.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:54Speaker 8: Were you glad to see it, you know, as it
- 1:05:56Speaker 8: came in while you were still working on all those projects?
- 1:05:59Speaker 8: Was it handy to have there?
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: Oh yeah, for sure. It was, uh, I, um, you know,
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: not being a, uh, dyed in the wolves, computer graph,
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: computer person, you know, I use the computer and email
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:06:15Speaker 5: But, uh, they came along and I remember a guy
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: giving a demonstration of how he could do the shadows
- 1:06:20Speaker 5: over the planets, you know, and I thought, Oh, that's
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: pretty neat. You know, the animation had to do it
- 1:06:24Speaker 5: before and he had a program that could do it. And,
- 1:06:27Speaker 5: you know, it grew and grew and grew. And, um,
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: You know, in some ways it was like a hand-in-glove
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: relationship for a long time. And one of the women
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: at work said, well, sometimes it's more like a fist-in-a-glove relationship,
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: a clenched fist, which was true. But all the way
- 1:06:46Speaker 5: through from the very beginning it had a very competitive feel.
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: You know, this department will do that, no, this part.
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: And we had different ideas about how each thing would
- 1:06:56Speaker 5: be done in some cases and some kind of. Sometimes
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: the decision would be made to go one way or
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: another way. You'd make your best proposal and plan on
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: what the budget would be, and sometimes you'd win at
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: that and sometimes you wouldn't. I guess there's some things
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: about CG when you just use it and use it
- 1:07:18Speaker 5: and use it. You can do everything and make everything synthetic.
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: And when everything is synthetic, then what do you kind
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: of grab onto for reality? Yeah, a little bit there.
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: And the model shop stuff, especially when it was in
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: conjunction with CG and the CG composites, you know, it
- 1:07:37Speaker 5: had a real you're-in-the-world look to it. And sometimes when
- 1:07:42Speaker 5: it's all synthetic, it has a bit of a computer
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: game feel to it. Definitely.
- 1:07:48Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: So that changes. I think sometimes kids aren't as critical
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: of that kind of thing because they do computer games
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: a lot. Yeah.
- 1:07:57Speaker 8: They don't know better without watching more of the old stuff.
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:08:02Speaker 8: You're tied heavily to Star Wars, but you've done a
- 1:08:06Speaker 8: lot of other projects. Is there one that's kind of
- 1:08:09Speaker 8: another one of your favorites or something that you're particularly
- 1:08:11Speaker 8: proud of outside of the Star Wars universe?
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: Well, I'm certainly proud of the Indiana Jones group.
- 1:08:18Speaker 8: Definitely, yeah.
- 1:08:20Speaker 5: But we did wonderful work for all kinds of films.
- 1:08:24Speaker 5: Mars Attacks was great. Not a movie that people watch
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: very often these days, but it had great stuff in it.
- 1:08:33Speaker 8: It's underappreciated.
- 1:08:35Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: And Mission Impossible had great work in it that we did.
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: Crash of that big tower. Men in Black. There were
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: just a lot of good, hard projects that had problems
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: that had to be solved. I had a great time.
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: I felt that I really loved it.
- 1:09:00Speaker 8: Out.
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: I just said upstairs that I kind of got to
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: be living in Florence during the Renaissance.
- 1:09:05Speaker 8: Yeah, kind of.
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: It was a great feeling.
- 1:09:08Speaker 8: Its own, yeah, science fiction renaissance. That was the bulk
- 1:09:13Speaker 8: of it. You said you officially retired. Is there any
- 1:09:16Speaker 8: other projects or anything you kind of want to work on,
- 1:09:19Speaker 8: or are you done with it?
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: Well, I worked last year. I worked for about six
- 1:09:24Speaker 5: months on a NASA project doing models of ships that
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: were used for NASA. And it went off to Copenhagen, Stockholm.
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: And I guess another phase of that is going to
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: be we're going to do the same thing but for Taiwan.
- 1:09:40Speaker 5: And so it's not literally for film, but it's the
- 1:09:43Speaker 5: same people that I've worked with for years and years,
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: and we're doing this one project. I have lots of things.
- 1:09:50Speaker 5: I'm remodeling the house and redoing the kitchen and did
- 1:09:55Speaker 5: a bathroom and that kind of stuff.
- 1:09:57Speaker 8: That's enough work right there, really.
- 1:09:59Speaker 5: Yeah, and I like doing that. Very satisfying to do
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: that stuff to the house that I never got to
- 1:10:04Speaker 5: in the previous 25, 30 years.
- 1:10:06Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:10:08Speaker 8: You just didn't know if there was anything you wanted
- 1:10:09Speaker 8: to promote or anything? No.
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: I wrote a book called Sculpting the Galaxy. There you go.
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: And it basically is kind of the history of the
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: model shop during the Star Wars series. And it was
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: very satisfying to do that. I'm not a born and
- 1:10:25Speaker 5: bred writer, but with time and stuff like that. came
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: up with a book and it is reasonably popular you
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: know people buy it and there's a big collector's edition
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: version of it that weighs about 19 pounds yeah it
- 1:10:38Speaker 5: has models and dvds in it.
- 1:10:41Speaker 8: And i guess all that yeah it comes with actual
- 1:10:43Speaker 8: all that actual stuff pieces of the death star yeah
- 1:10:46Speaker 8: pieces of.
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: The death star and a little uh c-3po and r2d2
- 1:10:49Speaker 5: and a little man speeder and stuff.
- 1:10:51Speaker 8: Like that it's a it's a really well put together
- 1:10:54Speaker 8: project yeah it turned out.
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: One of the It won like an award, an honorable
- 1:10:59Speaker 5: mention at the New York Book Fair that year or
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: something like that as a presentation book.
- 1:11:06Speaker 8: It was Sculpting a Galaxy?
- 1:11:07Speaker 5: Yeah, Sculpting a Galaxy. The big book.
- 1:11:10Speaker 8: Go check that one out. Otherwise, yeah, that's about it.
- 1:11:14Speaker 8: Thanks for talking to us today.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: Okay, good. Thanks again.
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 1:11:24Speaker 12: Don't be shy. We'd like to hear from you. So
- 1:11:26Speaker 12: give us a call at 502-365-5565. Or you can email
- 1:11:31Speaker 12: us at geeksatmoviemeltdown.com. And just stop by the website for
- 1:11:35Speaker 12: our frequent updates. That's moviemeltdown.com.
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: Alright, so we are back in the parking lot at Wonderfest.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: We're in my car now. Doesn't smell funny like Brian's.
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: I don't buy that.
- 1:11:53Speaker 10: Your truck smells funny.
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: Whatever.
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: He's got an odor, dude.
- 1:11:59Speaker 12: Anyway.
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: So, um, what were your highlights of Wonderpants?
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: Uh, Carolyn Monroe liked my hair.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: She was pretty awesome. She was very nice, as was Tammy.
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: Tammy was her helper, and I'm pretty sure it's her daughter.
- 1:12:15Speaker 10: Oh, she's awesome.
- 1:12:17Speaker 8: Yeah, she was actually really nice, so I want to
- 1:12:19Speaker 8: thank Tammy as much as Caroline, because she sort of
- 1:12:22Speaker 8: helped make it all happen, so.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: I like her righteous indignation when that person snaked us.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: Yeah, there was another podcast trying to move in on
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: our territory.
- 1:12:31Speaker 10: They didn't try to.
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: They just forced their way in.
- 1:12:33Speaker 8: And he, like, butted all up in and started talking
- 1:12:36Speaker 8: to her. And then, yeah, Tammy came back and.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: Was like, what? What the? I can't leave for a second.
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: And I agree.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: I like how she made them cut their interview short, though.
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: It's because we're cooler. And we were there first. And
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: we followed the rules. Or as much as we ever
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: followed the rules. But... We were trying to be respectful
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: of the actors.
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: That guy was a douchebag. I don't know what podcasts
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: they do, but it sounds lame. It's a podcast devoted
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: to one guy's movies. That's it. One Italian guy's movies.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: lame-ass bullshit.
- 1:13:06Speaker 8: Yeah, it was kind of like, wow, I didn't even
- 1:13:08Speaker 8: want to pick a genre. I didn't want to get
- 1:13:11Speaker 8: painted into that corner, let alone one person's movies.
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: I can understand a genre. I prefer one genre over most.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: We stick to that one more than most, but still.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: To one director?
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: One director is what he said.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: An Italian director, which I've never heard of, which really
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: doesn't mean shit because I don't hear most people, but still,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: fuck that.
- 1:13:32Speaker 7: Asshole.
- 1:13:33Speaker 8: No offense to the rest of the Italian directors, but
- 1:13:36Speaker 8: that podcast, yeah, I don't know. I don't know what
- 1:13:38Speaker 8: their plan was, but they were all up in our business.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: He seemed like a douchebag. He looked like a douchebag.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: He sounded like a douchebag. He walked like a douchebag.
- 1:13:48Speaker 10: Not quite as douchebaggy as that guy that we saw
- 1:13:50Speaker 10: who looked like an 80s jackass boyfriend.
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: Dude, seriously. He had the hair. It was regottenambiculous.
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: But do you think it was a costume?
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: I don't know. I can't tell if it was like
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: He didn't have a beard, so I don't think he
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: was a hipster, but he did have tight pants. Hmm.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: And a V-neck shirt, which I hate V-neck shirts.
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: Is there, like, a new mode of geek hipster?
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: Like, you're so hip, you want to be a geek?
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: Is that possible?
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: I don't know. Ugh, he was sleazy looking. I was
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: going to try to get a stalker picture, but then
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: I think he realized it and he walked away.
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: Yeah, and you don't want to feed the ego of
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: somebody like that.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: His head was already big enough. Holy shit. Like helium
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: balloons lived in his hair.
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: You want to talk about your water?
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: Two fucking dollars for 12 fluid ounces of water.
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: Not even a full-size water. It's one of the stubby bottles.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: 12 fluid ounces. This is fucking retarded. Two fucking dollars.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: I paid a dollar for... for two cookies, but $ 2
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: for a tiny-ass bottle of water? A fucking plant bottle,
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: up to 30% plant-based. It should be fucking cheaper if
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: it's got recyclable shit in it.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: Maybe it's water from plants.
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: I don't know. Minerals added for taste. I don't want
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: fucking taste. It's water, for God's sake. It's water. I
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: don't want taste. If I want fucking taste, I'll go
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: get some fucking flavor water. Dasani sucks.
- 1:15:17Speaker 10: Ha ha.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: But I hate Dasani. I've said it before, and I'll
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: say it again. I hate Dasani. I prefer Awkwafina.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: This episode not sponsored by Dasani.
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: Unless they want to give us money, and then you
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: know what?
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: Mmm.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: Dasani.
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: Yeah, send that over. Send us some of that Coke money.
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: Was it Coke? I thought they were Pepsi.
- 1:15:33Speaker 10: No.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: Oh, they're Coca-Cola.
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: They're Coca-Cola.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: Oh, I'm disappointed in you, Coca-Cola.
- 1:15:36Speaker 9: So, Coca-Cola, if you'd like to send us a big check,
- 1:15:38Speaker 9: we can change our vote. But without that, I don't
- 1:15:41Speaker 9: know if she's going to be swayed.
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: Well, I filled it up with hotel water, too, so
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: I'm sure that didn't help.
- 1:15:47Speaker 10: But you should get out of my work bitch oh
- 1:15:50Speaker 10: there goes some jedis holy shit.
- 1:15:51Speaker 8: Yeah there are jedis in the bowling alley bowling alley
- 1:15:56Speaker 8: parking lot across the street i fucker.
- 1:15:58Speaker 10: Said across the street little kid liked my hair too
- 1:16:01Speaker 10: that was pretty exciting um.
- 1:16:04Speaker 8: I had somebody liked my shirt what are the odds
- 1:16:06Speaker 8: of that and wearing the dorky grito shirt too.
- 1:16:09Speaker 10: Somebody liked my tattoo uh Corey got mistaken for Lucille Ball.
- 1:16:14Speaker 10: I'm not sure how he feels about that. I don't
- 1:16:15Speaker 10: think it's good.
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: I don't know what to do with that at all,
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: by the way.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: Yeah, but he was blind.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: That's true.
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: And old.
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: He told you he can't see, so that doesn't help him.
- 1:16:23Speaker 10: I was just glad he got rid of his creepy
- 1:16:25Speaker 10: peeper stalker beard. If that came out correctly. Creepy peeper
- 1:16:28Speaker 10: stalker beard. I can't even say it properly now. He
- 1:16:31Speaker 10: got me all wonked up.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: On the water.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: Oh, and you'll be surprised. You'll be shocked to hear
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: that there was a Ghostbuster there.
- 1:16:40Speaker 10: Oh, yeah, he had fucking a Carl Magnum face, too.
- 1:16:45Speaker 8: What's the odds that there would be a Ghostbuster at
- 1:16:48Speaker 8: some sort of gathering of geeks?
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: It's so unusual.
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: Did you see a Jack Sparrow? Did I already mention
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: Jack Sparrow?
- 1:16:54Speaker 8: No, but can I add that I still think he
- 1:16:57Speaker 8: looks like as if Jimmy Fallon were playing Jack Sparrow?
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: Like 15 to 20 years ago, maybe. Maybe he was
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: still young. Jimmy Fallon's gotten old. I don't like that.
- 1:17:07Speaker 10: Jimmy Fallon can't get old.
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: He still kind of acts like a child. That makes
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: it okay.
- 1:17:11Speaker 8: I don't watch his show.
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: I'm in bed by then. I'm old, too.
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: It happens. It sucks.
- 1:17:20Speaker 8: Anything else we'd like to pass along? We didn't really
- 1:17:23Speaker 8: buy much.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: I didn't buy a damn thing but my overpriced water
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: and my cookie.
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: There's a lot of cool stuff.
- 1:17:27Speaker 8: I just don't have any money at this point. I'd
- 1:17:30Speaker 8: like to, yeah, there's a ton of posters I want.
- 1:17:32Speaker 8: I want to redo the whole thing and awesome posters. But, yeah,
- 1:17:36Speaker 8: those all cost money.
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: So, I looked at a few. There's some There's some
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: awesome stuff.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: Wasn't near enough Beastmaster stuff, I'll tell you that right now.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's your problem most places you go.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: They had one poster, but it's the same one I
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: bought from them last time that I was there. It's multiplying.
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: They only have one until I buy it. Then they
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: have another one.
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: It's magic.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: The way that happens.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:17:57Speaker 8: I need to add that one to my list of
- 1:17:58Speaker 8: stuff to get. Who doesn't need a Beastmaster poster?
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: Seriously. Mark Singer, I want you to sign my poster.
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: Bring it on, bitch.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: You heard it, Mark. Get on it.
- 1:18:08Speaker 10: Fuckin' Aang.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: Why does he not do more conventions? And Dragon Con, man.
- 1:18:17Speaker 8: Oh, I think that about wraps up this episode here
- 1:18:20Speaker 8: from Wonderfest. So once again, if you haven't checked it out,
- 1:18:23Speaker 8: lots of geek stuff, lots of model kits.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: We did see a lot of awesome models.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: It's fucking cold in there, too. I forgot to say that.
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: That's a good thing.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: It's fucking arctic in there. There needs to be a
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: nice balance.
- 1:18:32Speaker 8: I've been to a lot of really hot and stuffy
- 1:18:36Speaker 8: and sweaty places.
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: Yeah, at conventions, and I'm glad that this was not
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: one of those.
- 1:18:42Speaker 10: But still, they could have, like, maintained it a little
- 1:18:44Speaker 10: bit better.
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: It's, like, fucking snowing in there. It's fucking cold.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: You could have worn a jacket. you were just wanting
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: to show off the Enterprise I know what you were
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: up to I was.
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: Throwing off the Enterprise and Corey didn't want to get
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: left out so I wore a capris and I wore
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: my tank top because I figured hey geek fest it's
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: gonna be fucking hot in there it's gonna be geek
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: sweat I'm gonna be prepared but fucking hell I'm freezing
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: my ass off there I like to be air conditioned
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: but this is just ridiculous you know I like my
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: AC but I'm like fuck this is like I don't
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: like that damn cold.
- 1:19:12Speaker 8: I appreciate the welcome change of AC, as opposed to
- 1:19:15Speaker 8: the miasma, as we've referred to it in the past.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: The fog of eternal stench.
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: Yeah, we don't want that at any convention, so yes.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: Still, balance.
- 1:19:26Speaker 8: But yes, otherwise, lots of cool models, lots of geeky stuff,
- 1:19:29Speaker 8: so check it out. I believe they are at wonderfest.com,
- 1:19:32Speaker 8: so go plan ahead for next year. Otherwise, anything else
- 1:19:36Speaker 8: you need to pass along?
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: $ 2 water is ridiculous.
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: I agree.
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: That's why I didn't buy one.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: That's thirsty.
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: That about does it. We will return next week. Same
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: geek time, same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: Bye.
- 1:20:01Speaker 11: When no one else can understand me When everything I
- 1:20:08Speaker 11: do is wrong You give me hope and consolation. You
- 1:20:17Speaker 11: give me strength to carry on.
- 1:20:21Speaker 14: And you're always there to lend a hand in everything
- 1:20:29Speaker 14: I do. That's the wonder, the wonder of you.
- 1:20:43Speaker 11: And when you smile the world is brighter You touch
- 1:20:49Speaker 11: my hand and I'm a king Your kiss to me
- 1:20:55Speaker 11: is worth a fortune.
- 1:20:59Speaker 15: Your love for me is everything I guess I'll never
- 1:21:05Speaker 15: know the reason why You love me as you do.
- 1:21:13Speaker 14: That's the wonder, the wonder of you.
- 1:21:22Speaker 5: Play the song, James.
- 1:21:45Speaker 15: I guess I'll never know the reason why you love me.
- 1:21:54Speaker 10: As you do.
- 1:22:13Speaker 13: Oh, this is with Richard Peele. Yeah. I felt very short.
