- 24:12Speaker 10: such a way.
- 24:13Speaker 23: He is on top of the top.
- 24:15Speaker 10: He is on top of the top.
- 24:17Speaker 23: He is on top of the top.
- 24:32Speaker 10: La la la la la What does this youth do
- 24:51Speaker 10: to you?
- 24:51Speaker 23: What does this youth do to you? What does this
- 24:56Speaker 23: youth do to you? What does this youth do to you?
- 25:00Speaker 23: What does this youth do to you? What does this
- 25:05Speaker 23: youth do to you? What does this youth do to you?
- 25:10Speaker 10: What does this youth do to you? What does this
- 25:12Speaker 10: youth do to you? What does this youth do to you?
- 25:17Speaker 10: What does this youth do to you?
- 25:23Speaker 23: Shaini da Arsh Deep likhda.
- 25:25Speaker 10: Ya geetni Milne di unu koi deja tu tarikni.
- 25:32Speaker 23: Ladies and gentlemen, all the way live, ironically from India
- 25:36Speaker 23: right now, when she's actually supposed to be here in
- 25:39Speaker 23: Southern California.
- 26:01Speaker 4: The lovely Malvika. How are you, Malvika?
- 26:03Speaker 14: Hi, Sammy. I'm doing amazing. How are you?
- 26:06Speaker 4: Well, I'm doing great.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Fullerton, born and raised. And I'm talking to you in Mumbai,
- 26:12Speaker 1: which is awesome.
- 26:13Speaker 14: Yeah. Tables have turned. Tables have turned.
- 26:16Speaker 10: They have. Indeed, they have.
- 26:18Speaker 1: And I think you and I can certainly reflect on
- 26:19Speaker 1: that by being from here in LA and seeing how
- 26:23Speaker 1: much the energy has really picked up over there in
- 26:25Speaker 1: the Indian music industry. And Well, I guess my first
- 26:29Speaker 1: question to you is tell me about that. Tell me
- 26:32Speaker 1: about this wave. And I know you're in the middle
- 26:34Speaker 1: of it with all the great work that you're doing
- 26:36Speaker 1: out there.
- 26:36Speaker 4: So tell us.
- 26:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:38Speaker 14: So I think inside, I always had this feeling that
- 26:43Speaker 14: somehow I'd find my way back to India. And it's
- 26:46Speaker 14: not like any of this was intentional. I mean, when
- 26:48Speaker 14: I started making music, it was just like, I knew
- 26:52Speaker 14: I wanted to use, um, Like, just my culture within
- 26:57Speaker 14: the music I made, but it's strange because I grew
- 27:00Speaker 14: up speaking English, so it's not, you know, I knew
- 27:02Speaker 14: I wasn't going to be making Hindi language music, but
- 27:05Speaker 14: I knew because of my background at Barth, Matthew, which
- 27:08Speaker 14: was basically my, I guess, my first foundation in music. Like,
- 27:12Speaker 14: that just informed so much of the way I built,
- 27:14Speaker 14: you know, like, with my collaborators, the instrumentation and everything.
- 27:18Speaker 1: In my music.
- 27:18Speaker 11: Right.
- 27:19Speaker 14: And then somehow, and in some way, I think India
- 27:22Speaker 14: just took to my story as an artist really nicely. And, um,
- 27:27Speaker 14: you know, I think it's been wonderful to kind of
- 27:30Speaker 14: come back to my roots and, and a lot of
- 27:33Speaker 14: the themes that I hit on in my music too,
- 27:34Speaker 14: it's kind of like coming home, like coming home to myself,
- 27:37Speaker 14: coming home to my roots. So, um, it's a beautiful
- 27:40Speaker 14: sort of like return.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And it's awesome because you're doing it in English and I, um,
- 27:46Speaker 1: I really love that because I think that there's this
- 27:49Speaker 1: level of authenticity that you, of course, bring by being
- 27:52Speaker 1: from here and being aware of the culture and stuff.
- 27:55Speaker 1: And then sticking yourself in the middle of what I
- 27:58Speaker 1: consider one of the most vibrant music industries in the
- 28:00Speaker 1: world is a really interesting move. And so I'm excited
- 28:04Speaker 1: about your work. We're all going to talk about it
- 28:06Speaker 1: here today. And I'm going to kind of hark back
- 28:10Speaker 1: to the beginnings, which is really interesting. And you just
- 28:13Speaker 1: mentioned it right now. You're actually a third generation Bhartnatyam dancer.
- 28:18Speaker 1: And to me, that is a tremendous asset to have
- 28:23Speaker 1: growing up in the world out here. And I think
- 28:25Speaker 1: that that's a direct connection to the roots. And so
- 28:29Speaker 1: I think that was probably a way that you stayed
- 28:31Speaker 1: plugged into your background and your kind of upbringing. And
- 28:36Speaker 1: I feel that now this transition to India is probably
- 28:39Speaker 1: a lot easier because of that.
- 28:42Speaker 14: I don't, I wouldn't say it's easier, but I would
- 28:44Speaker 14: say it's just, it, it gives me a space where I,
- 28:48Speaker 14: I think I just feel more grounded when I'm in
- 28:52Speaker 14: India because it's like, I think when you grow up
- 28:54Speaker 14: in the U S you know, thankfully my parents did
- 28:58Speaker 14: a lot of things that kept me close to my
- 29:00Speaker 14: Indian culture, but I never, you know, you always have
- 29:05Speaker 14: this little bit of identity struggle. Like am I Indian
- 29:07Speaker 14: or am I American? And I, The first time, you know,
- 29:11Speaker 14: I would ask people, you know, like family in India, like,
- 29:15Speaker 14: do you guys see me as more Indian or American?
- 29:17Speaker 14: They'd be very confused. They would never know how to answer.
- 29:20Speaker 14: But when aunties from India would like come and visit and,
- 29:23Speaker 14: you know, talk to me, they'd be like, you know,
- 29:26Speaker 14: you're very Desi, like you're very Indian. And so I
- 29:30Speaker 14: think it's just that like, yes, my language is very English. It's,
- 29:34Speaker 14: you know, it's American that way. I'm Australian, but like
- 29:37Speaker 14: my heart is so Indian. Um, and so I think,
- 29:41Speaker 14: you know, because Bharat Natyam is kind of like, it's
- 29:44Speaker 14: a form of storytelling. I think it just informed the
- 29:47Speaker 14: way I build my, um, albums, my songs, the way
- 29:51Speaker 14: I think about, uh, emotions. Um, and so, yeah, I
- 29:56Speaker 14: think it's, it's just the foundation and, and, um, And
- 29:59Speaker 14: then obviously the expression is maybe a little on the
- 30:02Speaker 14: surface more English.
- 30:04Speaker 1: That's really interesting. You know, the other element of your
- 30:08Speaker 1: story that was really interesting to me. Well, first of all,
- 30:13Speaker 1: you probably have one of the best phrases for what
- 30:18Speaker 1: you and I go through in life, which is a shapeshifter, right?
- 30:20Speaker 4: You kind of.
- 30:23Speaker 1: And when I saw that, I was like, dude, that's
- 30:24Speaker 1: got to be one of the best phrases I've heard
- 30:26Speaker 1: because that's what we honestly have to do. We find
- 30:29Speaker 1: ourselves in, you know, this famous comedian here in the U.S.,
- 30:34Speaker 1: Asif Manvi, who put out this book called No Man's Land.
- 30:38Speaker 1: He said that we're not Indian enough for India and
- 30:40Speaker 1: we're not Western enough for the West. And so we're
- 30:43Speaker 1: no man's land, right? That's where we're from. But you
- 30:45Speaker 1: call it being a shapeshifter, which I thought was a
- 30:48Speaker 1: really interesting phase of A phrase. And here you are
- 30:52Speaker 1: now into music, right? You've got this place that came
- 30:56Speaker 1: after a pretty lengthy spell in, I would say, another
- 31:01Speaker 1: discipline of our entertainment industry, which was, you know, you're
- 31:04Speaker 1: in front of a camera, you're working as an influencer,
- 31:06Speaker 1: but not just any influencer. You're accomplishing things like Vogue
- 31:10Speaker 1: and Harper's Bazaar in India and things like this. How
- 31:14Speaker 1: did the music bug hit you?
- 31:15Speaker 4: I know that was always in you. I know that's
- 31:18Speaker 4: a thing.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:19Speaker 4: But at what point were you like, you know what?
- 31:21Speaker 1: I just got to do this.
- 31:23Speaker 14: Yeah. It's wild because my mom actually told me, she
- 31:26Speaker 14: was like, if there was one person in the house
- 31:30Speaker 14: who could not sing it with you and you have
- 31:32Speaker 14: chosen to go into music, it was crazy because like, um,
- 31:36Speaker 14: it happened. It was, it was very funny. I mean,
- 31:39Speaker 14: I think she didn't mean it in a mean way,
- 31:41Speaker 14: but you know, it was like, um, but it was
- 31:44Speaker 14: crazy because it was, it did feel on the outside,
- 31:47Speaker 14: like a, like a, turn for everyone I think people
- 31:50Speaker 14: are still in my family like wow that was a
- 31:52Speaker 14: big change but um You know, my friend who's an artist,
- 31:57Speaker 14: she told me to start the artist's way because, you know,
- 32:00Speaker 14: my mental health was suffering a lot doing the kind
- 32:03Speaker 14: of work I was doing as an influencer, you know,
- 32:04Speaker 14: sharing my entire life every day, having to do things
- 32:08Speaker 14: just for the sake of using an algorithm. And, you know,
- 32:11Speaker 14: I've always wanted to express deeper emotions and I felt
- 32:14Speaker 14: very constricted in the work I was doing as an
- 32:17Speaker 14: influencer at a certain point. So as I was doing
- 32:20Speaker 14: some of the practices in the artist's way, The theme
- 32:25Speaker 14: of music just kept coming up and I was like,
- 32:27Speaker 14: you know what? Let me give it a shot. Started
- 32:30Speaker 14: taking singing classes, just DM'd a bunch of people in
- 32:32Speaker 14: the music industry and somehow made my first song and
- 32:36Speaker 14: I just never looked back after that.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Was it the process for you? Was it the.
- 32:43Speaker 6: I.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Know you just touched on the emotional element that you
- 32:49Speaker 1: felt that was there in music and the expression there.
- 32:51Speaker 4: Maybe that was.
- 32:53Speaker 1: not there in the social media side of it. To me,
- 32:55Speaker 1: this is really fascinating because here you are, you're doing
- 32:58Speaker 1: what a lot of people would love to do out
- 33:00Speaker 1: there and being in front of the camera and being visible.
- 33:03Speaker 1: But I think that there was this kind of element
- 33:05Speaker 1: for you that kind of brought you back to your
- 33:08Speaker 1: inner core. And I was like, I just got to
- 33:10Speaker 1: tell this inside story. So in your music now, I
- 33:15Speaker 1: feel that you've got a brand new album coming out.
- 33:18Speaker 1: which ironically drops on your birthday in December, and it's
- 33:23Speaker 1: called Baby. And I could imagine that it is many
- 33:28Speaker 1: months in the works. And here you are now, you're
- 33:32Speaker 1: voyaging into your own full body expression. What do you
- 33:37Speaker 1: take with you from that time into this place? There's
- 33:42Speaker 1: probably a lot you left behind. but I would imagine
- 33:44Speaker 1: that there's a lot that you've brought with you. What
- 33:46Speaker 1: are those things that you brought with you into this
- 33:48Speaker 1: new identity?
- 33:49Speaker 14: Oh, wow. That's a wonderful question. So it's actually called
- 33:52Speaker 14: December baby.
- 33:53Speaker 4: Um, and thank you, December babies.
- 33:56Speaker 14: Thank you. That's okay. Um, you know, the reason I
- 33:59Speaker 14: called it that it's, I wish it was a more
- 34:02Speaker 14: positive reason, but December 2025 was the time that I
- 34:05Speaker 14: was actually formally diagnosed with depression. And for me, like
- 34:12Speaker 14: it was such a strange thing because I've always been
- 34:14Speaker 14: a very independent, high functioning kind of individual. And so,
- 34:19Speaker 14: you know, I think being an influencer, it made me
- 34:24Speaker 14: a little bit, you know, just constantly moving like I
- 34:28Speaker 14: never stopped I just there's this need to constantly just
- 34:32Speaker 14: share everything post every day you know and I think
- 34:35Speaker 14: that high functioning part of myself really came from being
- 34:40Speaker 14: an influencer which in a way being high functioning can
- 34:43Speaker 14: be good but there's also a need for grounding for
- 34:47Speaker 14: pause for stillness And so this album really, really, um,
- 34:52Speaker 14: you know, in a, in a very fun and maybe
- 34:55Speaker 14: non-obvious way, it really explores me in my movement or
- 35:00Speaker 14: like more Shakti fiery energy, you know, very high functioning,
- 35:04Speaker 14: moving all the time. Then through the rest of the album,
- 35:07Speaker 14: as the album progresses it, you know, there's a little
- 35:10Speaker 14: bit of energy of stillness. There's people that come into
- 35:13Speaker 14: her life, um, she understands that, oh, wow, like there's
- 35:17Speaker 14: a different way of being, you know, like through connection,
- 35:20Speaker 14: through maybe a little bit of attraction and just a
- 35:23Speaker 14: little interaction with other people in her life. She just
- 35:27Speaker 14: realizes how to find that balance between movement and stillness.
- 35:32Speaker 14: So Shiv Shetty, movement, stillness, that's kind of the arc.
- 35:36Speaker 14: And it's interesting you talked about, you know, we talked
- 35:39Speaker 14: about Bharat Natyam. There was... when I was writing this album,
- 35:44Speaker 14: I was thinking about frameworks and, um, you know, obviously
- 35:49Speaker 14: Shiv Shakti felt like a really suitable framework for me
- 35:53Speaker 14: to explore what I've gone through in the last year
- 35:56Speaker 14: and a half to two years.
- 35:57Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 35:59Speaker 1: That's a very interesting way of putting it. My goodness.
- 36:02Speaker 1: I think you topped my, uh, question with an answer
- 36:05Speaker 1: like that.
- 36:07Speaker 4: That was well done.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Well played. I, uh, so when I heard your music, through,
- 36:14Speaker 1: you know, and I'm not talking about all the different
- 36:17Speaker 1: places that it was placed. I've seen your music in,
- 36:20Speaker 1: you know, playlists out there that I think a lot
- 36:22Speaker 1: of artists would work a lifetime to get to, you know,
- 36:25Speaker 1: the Spotify Fresh Finds in India, the Equals in India
- 36:29Speaker 1: and places like this. And, you know, you've done so
- 36:34Speaker 1: much already in a short amount of time. The excitement
- 36:37Speaker 1: for me comes in, not only with this December baby
- 36:40Speaker 1: album holds, but the voyage beyond. What have you learned
- 36:44Speaker 1: from being raised here in America and watching the music
- 36:48Speaker 1: industry take place here? That when you now go back
- 36:51Speaker 1: to India, you may find some familiarity as to like
- 36:55Speaker 1: what's going on and what is evolving there in front
- 36:57Speaker 1: of you. Do you find yourself kind of, you know,
- 37:01Speaker 1: leaning a little bit into what the American artists did
- 37:04Speaker 1: and maybe applying that there in what a lot of
- 37:06Speaker 1: people call a brand new frontier in India?
- 37:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:10Speaker 14: Yeah, I don't think consciously. I really think music was
- 37:14Speaker 14: almost a necessity for me. It was a way of feeling.
- 37:17Speaker 14: So I'm not always consciously looking at what people... in
- 37:22Speaker 14: the West are doing versus here.
- 37:24Speaker 4: Right.
- 37:25Speaker 14: I think, I think maybe subconsciously, yes, for sure. I've
- 37:28Speaker 14: understood from, uh, you know, pop artists in the, in
- 37:32Speaker 14: the West, um, branding and things, um, world, world building,
- 37:36Speaker 14: you know, like I don't consider myself a traditional, like, singer-songwriter,
- 37:41Speaker 14: I consider myself more an artist-storyteller. And then, you know,
- 37:44Speaker 14: just building the world around it, like whether it's with
- 37:47Speaker 14: visuals or having a cohesive storyline for the whole album,
- 37:54Speaker 14: that I think, you know, the West does that really
- 37:57Speaker 14: well in terms of like, you know, you'll see like,
- 37:59Speaker 14: you know, when an artist is signed to a label
- 38:02Speaker 14: or whatever, the A & Rs work really hard to
- 38:04Speaker 14: kind of, or not even just the A & Rs,
- 38:06Speaker 14: the artists themselves, like they work really hard to uh,
- 38:09Speaker 14: just build a world around themselves. And I think that
- 38:12Speaker 14: maybe subconsciously is like there within me. And also because
- 38:16Speaker 14: of my background as a creator influencer.
- 38:19Speaker 5: Right.
- 38:20Speaker 14: Um, so that, I think that instinct is there, but
- 38:24Speaker 14: I think when it comes to like my music, I
- 38:26Speaker 14: really try to put blinders on and like not look elsewhere. Um,
- 38:32Speaker 14: because it's just such a, for me, it's, it's such
- 38:35Speaker 14: a personal expression that I'm just like, the only way
- 38:39Speaker 14: I can do this is if I just tell my
- 38:42Speaker 14: full truth, you know, I'm not, I'm not going to
- 38:44Speaker 14: look outside too much.
- 38:46Speaker 1: That's, that's very interesting.
- 38:48Speaker 4: You know, it's.
- 38:50Speaker 1: To your point of the brand building part of it,
- 38:53Speaker 1: there's so much that we're so used to seeing, you know,
- 38:57Speaker 1: and then I speak to a lot of artists in
- 38:59Speaker 1: India and, you.
- 39:00Speaker 4: Know, And you'll ask them, you don't have merch? You
- 39:04Speaker 4: don't have, right? I mean, I know things are different
- 39:06Speaker 4: in India.
- 39:07Speaker 19: I get it.
- 39:07Speaker 1: But like, there's so many basic things that happen here
- 39:11Speaker 1: in the West here that I sometimes, when I speak
- 39:13Speaker 1: to artists in India, I feel that there's a lot
- 39:16Speaker 1: there that they can borrow from how the Western artist
- 39:19Speaker 1: goes about things in terms of, like you put, the
- 39:21Speaker 1: world building elements of everything and that whole side of things.
- 39:26Speaker 1: You know, there was one particular observation that I had.
- 39:30Speaker 1: on your career, which is that on the music side,
- 39:33Speaker 1: you have accomplished a lot in a very relatively quick
- 39:37Speaker 1: amount of time. And when I looked at that, and
- 39:41Speaker 1: I looked at the fact that you were an influencer
- 39:43Speaker 1: at your previous post, let's just call it, My feeling
- 39:49Speaker 1: was that the speed of being an influencer has translated
- 39:53Speaker 1: over to the music industry for you.
- 39:56Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 39:57Speaker 1: You're probably looking at us musicians like.
- 39:59Speaker 4: Man, you guys are slow.
- 40:02Speaker 1: And does that happen to you because of how you're
- 40:05Speaker 1: used to running on a treadmill and being on a
- 40:08Speaker 1: social media influencer.
- 40:09Speaker 4: World kind of thing?
- 40:11Speaker 14: You know, as I was saying, like a lot of
- 40:13Speaker 14: the album, like I, through connecting with people and, you know,
- 40:17Speaker 14: obviously working with people in music and stuff, I've understood
- 40:20Speaker 14: the beauty and a slow burn, the beauty and stillness,
- 40:25Speaker 14: the importance of when you're making music, sit with it
- 40:28Speaker 14: for a little bit. Don't just keep, you know, I mean,
- 40:32Speaker 14: Speed is important, but also grounding is. And so I'm
- 40:35Speaker 14: going to be very honest. I think when you do
- 40:37Speaker 14: something that's so aligned, the stars kind of work in
- 40:41Speaker 14: your favor. I could not tell you when I stepped
- 40:43Speaker 14: into music, I had no idea that I would be
- 40:45Speaker 14: where I am today. I'm not going to say it
- 40:47Speaker 14: wasn't because of intentional or hard work. I have been
- 40:51Speaker 14: extremely focused on what I've been making, but... everything that
- 40:55Speaker 14: has happened in the past year, I feel has been
- 40:57Speaker 14: so serendipitous. And like, you can ask even like anyone, um,
- 41:01Speaker 14: on my team, like the last couple of weeks, we
- 41:04Speaker 14: just had things happen where we're like, that was a
- 41:07Speaker 14: very special, like, like, uh, Vikram from my team would
- 41:10Speaker 14: say like a windfall, you know, it's like, what did like,
- 41:15Speaker 14: did that really just happen? So, um, I think, you know, maybe,
- 41:21Speaker 14: maybe in a way, everything I did leading up to
- 41:23Speaker 14: where I am now, it's, it was all necessary, you know?
- 41:27Speaker 14: And like now I just feel very aligned in what
- 41:29Speaker 14: I'm doing. And, um, I feel like I'm not compromising
- 41:33Speaker 14: my expression and I'm also doing something with full conviction,
- 41:37Speaker 14: something I believe in putting my own, you know, resources
- 41:41Speaker 14: behind it. And I think the universe in a way
- 41:43Speaker 14: rewards that.
- 41:46Speaker 1: I couldn't agree more. I think that I wanted to
- 41:53Speaker 1: actually touch on a quote.
- 41:55Speaker 4: That you had.
- 41:57Speaker 1: And when I talk about you as an individual, I
- 42:04Speaker 1: could see this. I'm not sure who said this, but
- 42:08Speaker 1: the quote goes something like this. Malvika is magnetic, but private.
- 42:14Speaker 3: Now.
- 42:16Speaker 1: In your eyes, what does that mean? What are people
- 42:19Speaker 1: picking up on there?
- 42:21Speaker 14: Yeah, I think... So I'm a little into astrology. I
- 42:25Speaker 14: don't know how many, how many people are like into.
- 42:28Speaker 4: It, but I'm very into it.
- 42:29Speaker 14: Okay.
- 42:30Speaker 3: Okay.
- 42:31Speaker 14: So I, I love Vedic astrology and like, I, I
- 42:34Speaker 14: didn't know this about myself until I got into astrology,
- 42:37Speaker 14: but like I have a Leo moon and a Scorpio
- 42:40Speaker 14: sun in Vedic terms. Now Scorpio is notorious for being
- 42:44Speaker 14: extremely like private and secretive and deep and, you know,
- 42:48Speaker 14: and a Leo is very like public and public facing
- 42:51Speaker 14: and needs, external validation so I've had this strange tension
- 42:55Speaker 14: and I talked about this even on my EP I've
- 42:58Speaker 14: always had this strange tension of like wanting to share
- 43:01Speaker 14: my work publicly but wanting such a robust private life
- 43:05Speaker 14: that I don't feel like I have to share and
- 43:08Speaker 14: the struggle with being an influencer was like you know
- 43:11Speaker 14: the things from your private life tend to quote perform
- 43:15Speaker 14: the best so like you know, having to take my
- 43:18Speaker 14: phone out at dinner and like record moments. Like I
- 43:21Speaker 14: just didn't want to do that anymore. And like, I
- 43:23Speaker 14: knew I wanted to build towards eventually having a family eventually,
- 43:27Speaker 14: you know, and I didn't want to have to share
- 43:28Speaker 14: that part with people, you know, like I think it's
- 43:32Speaker 14: so important to have things that are sacred to you.
- 43:34Speaker 14: Like I think, um, the people you love, the, uh,
- 43:39Speaker 14: you know, just moments that are special, but I just
- 43:44Speaker 14: feel like they don't need to be broadcast. So there's
- 43:48Speaker 14: just always been this tension within me. And I'm glad
- 43:51Speaker 14: that I found an outlet now where I can share
- 43:53Speaker 14: things on my own terms. And I don't have to
- 43:56Speaker 14: feel that pressure of constantly being on and sharing things
- 43:59Speaker 14: that I potentially would be uncomfortable sharing.
- 44:03Speaker 1: As a California girl in Mumbai right now, what do
- 44:07Speaker 1: you have on you right now that is absolutely Californian,
- 44:10Speaker 1: that is not from Mumbai, and it's within maybe reaching
- 44:13Speaker 1: distance of you at this particular moment?
- 44:16Speaker 14: Oh my God. That's such a good question.
- 44:18Speaker 1: What couldn't you leave behind?
- 44:23Speaker 14: Ooh, I'm looking around me. I feel like everything is,
- 44:28Speaker 14: let me think. I think it's just like, I don't know.
- 44:32Speaker 14: It's not really like a California thing. It's like a
- 44:34Speaker 14: me wherever I am thing, but like, I am notorious
- 44:38Speaker 14: for like looking very, as my brother would say, he's like,
- 44:42Speaker 14: you look homeless. Like I wear gym shorts and my
- 44:46Speaker 14: dad's t-shirt.
- 44:47Speaker 4: That's California.
- 44:48Speaker 14: It's a very California thing. Like California is very laid
- 44:52Speaker 14: back and casual for the most part. And so it's
- 44:54Speaker 14: this strange contradiction. Yesterday I was, um, you know, I
- 44:58Speaker 14: came in one of the papers, like, and so I
- 45:00Speaker 14: was holding that. And then, um, you know, someone, someone
- 45:03Speaker 14: was in the house and they're like, Oh, that is you?
- 45:08Speaker 14: I'm like, yeah. Like, you know, it's just like a
- 45:11Speaker 14: strange thing where I look very different when I'm in
- 45:14Speaker 14: the house. And then, you know, when I decided to
- 45:15Speaker 14: step out, I obviously enjoy getting dressed up and all
- 45:18Speaker 14: of that.
- 45:19Speaker 1: I have a, a final question that I like to
- 45:23Speaker 1: throw at folks. It's always one of my favorite questions.
- 45:27Speaker 1: And I always pause and kind of frame it right
- 45:30Speaker 1: before I ask it. And it's, it's a question that,
- 45:34Speaker 1: It's a personal one for you. It's asking you to
- 45:41Speaker 1: reflect on the following question, which is, there's a young
- 45:45Speaker 1: girl in Fullerton that was growing up practicing Bhaktanatyam. Maybe
- 45:51Speaker 1: she was eight or nine. And she is asking you
- 45:55Speaker 1: for advice. She's asking her older self for her advice.
- 46:00Speaker 1: What advice would you give that young girl in Fullerton
- 46:03Speaker 1: that was growing up?
- 46:07Speaker 14: You don't have to have everything figured out right now.
- 46:11Speaker 14: I think don't put so much pressure on yourself. Understand
- 46:16Speaker 14: how to flow in life and release all, as many
- 46:22Speaker 14: of the outside expectations as you can release. That will
- 46:27Speaker 14: be great for you because you'll find yourself. I think
- 46:31Speaker 14: a lot of young girls, spend so much time trying
- 46:35Speaker 14: to cater to the people around them and especially in
- 46:37Speaker 14: our culture you know South Asian culture listen to your
- 46:40Speaker 14: parents what will people say but as I've grown up
- 46:45Speaker 14: I've learned to really really allow my expression to just
- 46:52Speaker 14: unapologetically come through and I would tell the younger girl
- 46:55Speaker 14: not to feel ashamed of her weirdness of her quirks
- 46:58Speaker 14: of her you know just flow and be who you are.
- 47:03Speaker 14: Let go of all of the outside noise. Wow.
- 47:09Speaker 1: Great advice. That's great advice. Malvika, it's been... fabulous hanging
- 47:17Speaker 1: out with you here on the bridge this morning. And
- 47:21Speaker 1: I wanted to thank you for your time and thank
- 47:23Speaker 1: you for being so open and so generous with your
- 47:25Speaker 1: thoughts today. We're really excited about your upcoming album coming
- 47:29Speaker 1: out here in December called December Baby. And for us
- 47:33Speaker 1: here in California and the US, your homeland over here,
- 47:37Speaker 1: your other homeland, your shape-shifting homeland, we send you our
- 47:41Speaker 1: best as you get ready for this rollout over there.
- 47:45Speaker 10: Thank you.
- 47:45Speaker 14: No, I really enjoyed our conversation. Thank you for having me.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Well, I was going to have you introduce this last
- 47:51Speaker 1: song for us. So why don't you pick one from
- 47:53Speaker 1: your bucket of music here and introduce it to us
- 47:56Speaker 1: over here in the U.S.? Okay, lovely.
- 47:59Speaker 14: Yeah. So as I just said, you know, I use
- 48:02Speaker 14: the word quirk, you know, quirk.
- 48:04Speaker 24: Yeah.
- 48:05Speaker 14: I have a song called Quirky, which I think will
- 48:07Speaker 14: be wonderful for girls of all ages and just anyone who...
- 48:12Speaker 14: like being weird and like, you know, strange things. Maybe, um,
- 48:17Speaker 14: this is like my little love letter to just being, um,
- 48:21Speaker 14: myself and being, you know, having, having those strange things
- 48:24Speaker 14: about myself, but being like, yeah, I kind of love
- 48:25Speaker 14: this side of me. Um, so here's quirky for everyone.
- 48:29Speaker 14: Let's play quirky.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Let's do that. Uh, Mavica, thank you so much for
- 48:32Speaker 1: joining us. Great selection.
- 48:33Speaker 4: I love the tabla in there.
- 48:35Speaker 1: It's nice and quiet and just very subtle.
- 48:37Speaker 4: It's really, really well done song.
- 48:38Speaker 1: So everybody get ready for this one. Mavika, thank you
- 48:42Speaker 1: for joining us. And here's the song, Quirky.
- 48:51Speaker 7: I'll see when I want, yeah, clean up nice. Little
- 48:54Speaker 7: Miss Perfect, I can do it right. Oops, said something dumb,
- 48:57Speaker 7: still you left like five times. Kind of weird humor,
- 49:00Speaker 7: kind of offbeat. Feels fun to feel like me. Call
- 49:03Speaker 7: me Jonathan Anderson, how I put it together. It don't
- 49:06Speaker 7: always make sense, but I like it better. Can't really
- 49:09Speaker 7: do things how they're designed.
- 49:11Speaker 4: I like mixing everything up, kind of.
- 49:12Speaker 7: Twisted the lines. Well, things thought I went too far.
- 49:16Speaker 7: You ain't blinked twice, you just raised the bar. Match
- 49:18Speaker 7: my energy, didn't try. too hard yeah i'm really kind
- 49:23Speaker 7: of quirky yeah i'm kind of quirky don't gotta act
- 49:26Speaker 7: right you already know me quirky yeah i'm kind of
- 49:30Speaker 7: quirky Quirky, yeah I'm kinda quirky Pretty little Facebook, really
- 49:37Speaker 7: pretty messy Quirky, yeah I'm kinda quirky Freaky little mind
- 49:41Speaker 7: and you just let me It's the same thing every day.
- 49:49Speaker 7: Spice mix. Get obsessed on something else.
- 49:52Speaker 14: Okay.
- 49:52Speaker 7: Quiet chick, but I snap real quick. You don't flinch,
- 49:55Speaker 7: but just laugh a bit. Ask deep things at the
- 49:58Speaker 7: wrong time, but you still kind of know. See the
- 50:02Speaker 7: weirdest things, you play it back. Little details, you don't
- 50:05Speaker 7: miss that.
- 50:06Speaker 10: I'm like, damn.
- 50:07Speaker 7: You really caught that? Nope, nobody else would have caught that.
- 50:23Speaker 10: Yeah, I'm kind of quirky. Freaky little mind and you
- 50:24Speaker 10: just let me.
- 50:50Speaker 7: I don't show this side, I keep it closed I'm
- 50:53Speaker 7: used to things running hot then cold Say too much
- 50:56Speaker 7: when I lose control But you don't switch when I
- 50:59Speaker 7: get intense Just stay right there, don't second guess Friends
- 51:03Speaker 7: think you're a gentleman I know you got your other
- 51:06Speaker 7: side Don't treat me like one of the.
- 51:09Speaker 24: Guys Even if right now it's undefined If you like
- 51:12Speaker 24: me like this for real That's a different kind of
- 51:16Speaker 24: feel Porky little thing that I'm finally seeing And it's
- 51:20Speaker 24: hitting better than anything.
- 51:24Speaker 21: The song is called Quirky.
- 51:28Speaker 7: Shout out to Malvika.
- 51:52Speaker 1: And her album coming out in December, on December 10th.
- 51:57Speaker 1: The album is called December Baby, and she's getting ready
- 52:01Speaker 1: to drop it.

- 52:13Speaker 25: This is Doita Dasgupta, your Ruckus Avenue Radio music correspondent,
- 52:16Speaker 25: back with some fun facts about your favorite artists. Canadian
- 52:20Speaker 25: rapper and producer Tesher rose to prominence through his unique
- 52:23Speaker 25: brand of genre-blending mashups and remixes on YouTube and SoundCloud.
- 52:28Speaker 25: Tesher released his debut original single Young Shah Rukh in 2020,
- 52:32Speaker 25: continuing his string of viral hits. Tesher and his music
- 52:36Speaker 25: are one and the same, a blend of two cultures.
- 52:39Speaker 25: As he draws on both the South Asian heritage and
- 52:41Speaker 25: the Western culture he grew up in, Tesher aims to
- 52:44Speaker 25: create music that resonates not only with the South Asian
- 52:47Speaker 25: diaspora but with the global audience. Tesher's single Jalebi Baby
- 52:51Speaker 25: has taken the world and TikTok by storm and has
- 52:54Speaker 25: made history along the way. The multicultural song is a
- 52:57Speaker 25: hit in every way imaginable, with combined global streams surpassing
- 53:01Speaker 25: 100 million in just the first year of release, and
- 53:04Speaker 25: with over 21,000 TikTok creations using the song, totaling in
- 53:09Speaker 25: 95 million views. Jalebi Baby seemed to be the start
- 53:12Speaker 25: of an impending musical revolution.
- 53:14Speaker 14: Well, that's all from me.
- 53:16Speaker 10: Now back to you, Sammy.
- 53:18Speaker 1: Thank you so much, Doita. Yeah, we love Tesher's work.

- 55:17Speaker 10: I can see through your costume and read your mind.
- 55:19Speaker 1: But I can't resist having a good time.
- 55:21Speaker 4: Do you feel me?

- 57:21Speaker 1: And it's Halloween week out there, and it's an exciting
- 57:24Speaker 1: time out there for sure. A lot of great music
