Latest / Husker Buzz / Keys to the Game: Indiana
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, Sean.
- 0:00Speaker 2: Something's got to give tomorrow. I'm looking at these numbers,
- 0:04Speaker 2: and Nebraska and Indiana both have about a 54% third
- 0:08Speaker 2: down efficiency on offense. And on defense, they hold the
- 0:11Speaker 2: other team from getting a first down pretty much 80%
- 0:16Speaker 2: of the time. So somebody's going to have to get
- 0:18Speaker 2: a first down on third down tomorrow.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Yeah, and Indiana is not a big blitzing team. They
- 0:25Speaker 1: have a very good pressure rate with four. Nebraska has
- 0:30Speaker 1: had good pressures as well as one of the leaders
- 0:32Speaker 1: in sacks in the Big Ten. So there's a lot
- 0:35Speaker 1: to it. I think for Rob Orch's defense on third down,
- 0:38Speaker 1: can you get him in situations where he can sub
- 0:40Speaker 1: in some of those packages that he likes to bring in?
- 0:42Speaker 1: Because they've had really good success with that. Stopping the
- 0:46Speaker 1: run to me is still– going to be one of
- 0:48Speaker 1: the biggest things for this defense with Turbo Richard, who
- 0:51Speaker 1: Nebraska's actually played before. They played Turbo Richard in the
- 0:55Speaker 1: pinstripe bowl. He's at Boston College, and then Lee Beebe Jr.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Those are as good of a one-two punch as you're
- 1:01Speaker 1: going to see, but they've only played... really, you know,
- 1:05Speaker 1: Northwestern at this point. You can obviously count Rutgers, too,
- 1:09Speaker 1: but they're a lot like Nebraska in that regard. They
- 1:12Speaker 1: haven't really played a big, tough Big Ten game other
- 1:15Speaker 1: than maybe their Northwestern game, but that was in Bloomington,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and they won that game by five points.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Justin Evans says this team, his offensive line is ready
- 1:23Speaker 2: for this game.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Do you agree? You know, they have to be. Again,
- 1:29Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean... You hope they are. They've
- 1:32Speaker 1: trained and gotten to this point. They've gotten better each week.
- 1:37Speaker 1: They're a veteran in a lot of areas. The portal
- 1:40Speaker 1: pieces they brought in are good. The players they kept
- 1:43Speaker 1: are playing better than they have been playing. The quarterback
- 1:46Speaker 1: play has improved from where it was a year ago.
- 1:48Speaker 1: There's a lot of things that you like about Nebraska,
- 1:51Speaker 1: and now we've got to find out if they're ready
- 1:53Speaker 1: for a game like this.
- 1:54Speaker 2: If you were Indiana defensive coordinator Brian Haynes, how would
- 1:58Speaker 2: you play Anthony Calandria?
- 2:01Speaker 1: I think you're going to see kind of a midfield
- 2:04Speaker 1: zone where they keep eyes on Calandria, where they don't
- 2:08Speaker 1: let him run, and they won't blitz him a lot.
- 2:12Speaker 1: They'll try to do all their damage with four, meaning
- 2:14Speaker 1: there'll be seven back in coverage that will probably concentrate
- 2:18Speaker 1: on Quasi Gilmer first and then Anthony Calandria's legs second.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And they're going to say, you make the throws to
- 2:24Speaker 1: Jacory Barney and Isaiah Hunter and beat us that way.
- 2:27Speaker 1: We're not going to let you run. and we're not
- 2:29Speaker 1: going to let you just throw to Quasi Gilmer 17 times.
- 2:32Speaker 2: All right, keys to the game.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Keys to the game, develop an offensive identity of what
- 2:36Speaker 1: you want to be because you know they're going to
- 2:38Speaker 1: have a plan, and you've got to be able to
- 2:40Speaker 1: adjust to their adjustments. Limit the explosive plays on the
- 2:45Speaker 1: ground for the Hoosiers. You've got to win in coverage.
- 2:49Speaker 1: You look at Charlie Becker and Nick Marsh, two very
- 2:52Speaker 1: good receivers for Indiana. You've got Andrew Marshall, who's rarely
- 2:56Speaker 1: thrown at, winning coverage because those are going to be
- 2:58Speaker 1: some big one-on-ones, especially on some third downs. Adjust to
- 3:03Speaker 1: their adjustments. Whatever they come out with on you, you've
- 3:06Speaker 1: got to figure out your adjustments. Kurt Cignetti, as we know,
- 3:08Speaker 1: is the best in the business, and you've got to
- 3:10Speaker 1: get the crowd in the game finally. Look, no one
- 3:13Speaker 1: likes 11 a.m. games. But if you come out and
- 3:16Speaker 1: play well, you'll get this crowd engaged into the game.
- 3:19Speaker 1: So I do think it's important to make them a factor.
- 3:22Speaker 1: A lot of people have kind of said Memorial Stadium
- 3:25Speaker 1: doesn't get that loud. It does get loud, but the
- 3:27Speaker 1: team's got to play well. We've seen 30 straight losses
- 3:30Speaker 1: to ranked opponents. It's been a while since they've played
- 3:34Speaker 1: at a level that can get up for a game
- 3:37Speaker 1: like this on Saturday.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I've always maintained that consistently the most difficult home field
- 3:42Speaker 2: atmosphere in college football is Tiger Stadium and Baton Rouge.
- 3:46Speaker 2: But for big games, Nebraska shoots into the top three.
- 3:51Speaker 2: And that's going to have to be the case tomorrow. Because, hey,
- 3:54Speaker 2: this is a statement game, Sean. This is one of
- 3:56Speaker 2: those games. You've got to win this if you really,
- 3:59Speaker 2: truly are making progress. All right, excellent. We'll have you
- 4:03Speaker 2: on tonight at 6 o'clock with the Husker Online pregame
- 4:05Speaker 2: show with your merry band of Husker whizzes. So be
- 4:08Speaker 2: ready for that. And then, of course, tomorrow Sean will
- 4:11Speaker 2: be covering the game. We will have a complete recap
- 4:13Speaker 2: for you on Monday as well. But remember, tonight, 6 o'clock,
