- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:20I hope you guys are having a good day.
- 0:22I know a lot of our listeners are in the US and I know it's a
- 0:26very stressful day for you guys and my thoughts are with you,
- 0:31but I am here today to give you guys a distraction.
- 0:35Hopefully, you know, 15 minutes of reprieve from the anxiety of
- 0:42everything going on with the election.
- 0:44So let's just get right in to the stories.
- 0:48Oh also, I am feeling much better today.
- 0:50I made a comment on YouTube about how like yesterday I felt
- 0:53like I was very low energy. I just wasn't feeling very well
- 0:56yesterday. But I'm feeling much better
- 0:58today and I so appreciate all the comments and well wishes and
- 1:01everything is fine. I literally was just having one
- 1:05of those days. I was super sleep deprived.
- 1:07I was just a little bit like sluggish and just feeling down.
- 1:10You know when you just have one of those days.
- 1:12But I am back. I am energetic and I am back to
- 1:16be the light for some of you guys in possibly a very
- 1:21stressful day. OK, the first story that I have
- 1:23for you guys is that Casey Neistat is addressing his David
- 1:27Dobrik documentary once again, and this time he's kind of
- 1:30changing his tune. So in 20/22, it was announced
- 1:33that YouTube Casey Neistat had been putting together a
- 1:36documentary about David Dobrik and it was debuting at South by
- 1:40Southwest. Casey followed David around to
- 1:43kind of like figure out how David became one of the biggest
- 1:46Youtubers and like what that rise to fame was like his
- 1:48process, all of that. However, during filming with
- 1:52David, the Vlog squad and obviously David was the leader
- 1:56of the Vlog squad were quote UN quote cancelled when that
- 1:59insider article came out detailing an alleged sexual
- 2:02assault by David's friend and Vlog squad member Dom and some
- 2:05other members were allegedly present for it as well.
- 2:08And then I think this was actually before the article came
- 2:11out, but the kind of backlash or like the blowback from Jeff
- 2:15Whittick's excavator accident kind of started to happen after
- 2:20the Insider article came out. So Jeff was seriously injured by
- 2:23David while they were recording a vlog for David's channel.
- 2:26So Casey apparently included all of this in the documentary.
- 2:29And that apparently ruined Casey and David's relationship.
- 2:33So two years on from when it premiered at South by Southwest,
- 2:37Casey still will not release the documentary.
- 2:39He's been asked a few times on different podcasts where it is
- 2:43and at first he was saying the holdup was because he was
- 2:45looking for a bigger distributor.
- 2:47Now however, in a new interview with John Ushay posted a couple
- 2:51of days ago. Also, sorry if I said that
- 2:53wrong. I know he's like such a famous
- 2:56digital creator interviewer and I should know how to say his
- 3:00last name. Forgive me if I did not say it
- 3:02correctly. But in this interview, Casey has
- 3:04admitted that he is hesitant to release the documentary because
- 3:08he wants to protect David. So he also revealed that he
- 3:12spoke to the woman who accused Dom, David's friend of sexual
- 3:16assault in 2022, and he feels responsibility to her to share
- 3:20her story. But he is basically still
- 3:22choosing to protect David. He said he feels conflicted
- 3:26about that, but he's he kind of made it seem like it was this
- 3:30like not a subconscious desire to protect David, but he was
- 3:33kind of, I think implying that it's not a necessarily full on
- 3:38decision of his. He just has been like hesitant
- 3:40to release it. And he thinks it's probably
- 3:42because he's still trying to protect David.
- 3:44Somewhere deep down South, Casey and David are not on speaking
- 3:48terms. And this revelation has made a
- 3:50lot of people kind of side eye Casey even more.
- 3:54An interesting perspective though.
- 3:56I saw a comment saying that Casey is not protecting David.
- 3:59He is protecting himself because because he's scared of David.
- 4:03And I think that's probably valid.
- 4:05I think he's probably scared of David's fan base because even
- 4:09though David is, you know, nowhere near as relevant as he
- 4:13was before all of this happened, he still has a massive fan base.
- 4:17He still, you know, has rabid fans that I would argue probably
- 4:21feel even more protective over him now than they once did after
- 4:25all of this stuff happened. And I'm sure he's also scared of
- 4:28legal ramifications from David. So I don't know.
- 4:31So like I just kind of, you know, accepted that we were not
- 4:35going to ever see this documentary and I don't really
- 4:38know if I care to see it. I mean, obviously if it comes
- 4:40out, I will watch it so I can talk about it for you guys.
- 4:43But aside from that, like I don't have any interest.
- 4:46To me, David Dobrik is like so irrelevant now.
- 4:48And I just think everything that happened with the Vlog Squad was
- 4:51like so icky. I'm not interested in consuming
- 4:54the perspective of the perpetrators in these situations
- 4:58in both like Jeff's accident in Dom sexual assault, Like I'm not
- 5:02interested in hearing that side of things.
- 5:05I'm interested in hearing the victim side.
- 5:07And I think it is pretty messed up that Casey won't release it
- 5:11or like do a re edit or something if he is worried that
- 5:13he's being like too harsh on David or whatever.
- 5:15If he's worried about like legal ramifications, but like, at
- 5:18least do what you said you were going to do with, I think they
- 5:22called her Hannah in the article.
- 5:23I don't think that's her real name.
- 5:24But you know, with Hannah, where you said you were going to help
- 5:27her tell her story and she presumably sat down for him and
- 5:32spoke to him. And that would be very
- 5:34challenging to do if something like this happened to you.
- 5:36And then she got this kind of media storm around her with the
- 5:39Insider article. Again, I know she was anonymous,
- 5:41but it would have been incredibly difficult to tell the
- 5:44journalist that story and then watch everything unfold off the
- 5:47back of that story. Watch all the criticism against
- 5:50her. Watch how all of these people
- 5:53this like House of Cards kind of crumbled after that story broke.
- 5:57And that would be difficult to watch, even though you would
- 6:01also maybe feel a little bit vindicated.
- 6:03You know, there would be a lot of, I'm sure, guilt and shame
- 6:06associated with that. So to ask her to sit down and
- 6:09tell her, like, reiterate that story, relive that experience,
- 6:13relive I'm sure what it was like to speak with Insider and watch
- 6:18that fall out. Like I think it is his duty to
- 6:21her to bring that to life. All right, The next story that I
- 6:24have for you guys is like, it's like 1/2 story.
- 6:28Dave Portnoy and Josh Richards are releasing a diss track on
- 6:32Zach Bryan called The Smallest Man.
- 6:35So this is not out yet. It will come out tonight.
- 6:39But yeah, they have like, made a music video.
- 6:41It looks like. It's like a full diss track.
- 6:44Brianna reposted the teaser to her stories with like the eyes
- 6:48emoji. And yeah, this is obviously just
- 6:50Dave capitalizing on when he called Zach the smallest man.
- 6:53Is it the smallest man whoever lived or the smallest man alive?
- 6:56That Taylor Swift song, I actually listened to that song
- 6:59every once in a while. I should know it.
- 7:00But anyways, he called him that on Twitter, which was a nod to
- 7:05Zach Bryan getting in trouble and being an idiot and tweeting
- 7:10out that he prefers Kanye over Taylor recently.
- 7:13So yeah, Dave has been on like an anti Zach Bryan rampage a
- 7:18little bit since he broke up with Brianna, and this is I
- 7:22guess the next iteration of that.
- 7:24Anyways, this feels on brand for everyone involved and I am not
- 7:30anticipating anything great from the song from the diss track,
- 7:34but I will definitely listen. Okay, the next story is that
- 7:37Ariana Grande and Cynthia Arevo have addressed that Kardashian
- 7:41private screening of Wicked. So this is actually from one of
- 7:44my industry friends, Laura Macia.
- 7:46She's the entertainment editor at Pedestrian here in Australia.
- 7:49And she interviewed the Wicked cast on Monday when they were
- 7:52here for the Australian premiere.
- 7:54And she asked Ari and Cynthia to clarify, like, what went down
- 7:59with that controversial Kardashian screening.
- 8:02So in case you weren't across it, the Kardashians posted
- 8:05photos a couple of weeks ago with Ari and Cynthia at one of
- 8:08their homes because they basically came to give them this
- 8:12like private pre screening. The house was decorated like to
- 8:16the nines with wicked vibes. It was like a wicked themed
- 8:19festival or something. It was so wild.
- 8:22And in one of Kim's videos on social media, she said, I just
- 8:27came home and look what Cynthia and Ariana set up for us.
- 8:30So this prompted a lot of backlash.
- 8:33A lot of people thought that this was part of like the wicked
- 8:36marketing plan to do this screening and have the
- 8:38Kardashians post about it like an undisclosed ad, basically,
- 8:42which honestly, it could have been.
- 8:45It could have been. And people were also saying that
- 8:49the Kardashian kids have endless special experiences and it would
- 8:53have been way more impactful from APR perspective if they did
- 8:57these lavish private screenings with the cast, you know, at like
- 9:01a Children's Hospital or something like that, which
- 9:03actually completely agree. I think, of course, the reach of
- 9:06the Kardashians, if they did work with them, I don't know,
- 9:08it's possible. I don't really know.
- 9:10I'll get into like what they said about it.
- 9:12I don't necessarily think that, like Universal paid the
- 9:15Kardashians to post about it, but I think regardless, it's
- 9:18still, you know, reach and audience and PR for them.
- 9:23And I think it would have been much better PR for Universal for
- 9:26Wicked if, yeah, they had done something that was like really
- 9:28meaningful like that. Also, like, this is an aside,
- 9:31but there were also a lot of questions about like what went
- 9:34down at the screening because Ari and Kim obviously have this
- 9:37history, both having been involved pretty seriously with
- 9:40Pete Davidson. So that would have been
- 9:42interesting to be a little fly on the wall.
- 9:44I'm assuming they just like completely ignored it.
- 9:46I'm sure they've met a million times.
- 9:47But anyways, yes. So Laura asked them about this
- 9:50in their interview and they clarified that they did not set
- 9:53up the decor for the Kardashians quote.
- 9:56We'd set up a couple of other screenings for super fans and
- 9:59for our families. So when they said they wanted to
- 10:01see it, Universal was kind enough to set it up for us,
- 10:04Ariana explained. Ariana said we walked in and
- 10:07there were so many decorations. We were like, Oh my goodness,
- 10:10Kim, this is too much. Thank you so much.
- 10:12This is so nice of you. And she was like, thank you
- 10:15guys. I thought you guys did this.
- 10:17It turns out it was Universal Studios, which was so beautiful.
- 10:20It felt like our wedding day. So that was interesting because
- 10:23it gave us like a little bit of insight into what happened here.
- 10:27So yes, it doesn't necessarily sound like it was a paid
- 10:31opportunity, like it was a paid collaboration between the
- 10:34Kardashians and Universal to promote Wicked.
- 10:37I mean, and of course, like if the Kardashians contact
- 10:40Universal and they're like, hey, can we have a private pre
- 10:42screening? Like are you going to say no if
- 10:44you're doing these anyways? Like probably not.
- 10:46Like there's such a powerful influential family.
- 10:49But I still think the PR around it was kind of messy.
- 10:52That's just my opinion. All right.
- 10:55And the last story that I have for you guys, it's a little bit
- 10:57of tech news. Netflix is removing most of its
- 11:01interactive titles from December 1st.
- 11:04So from December, Netflix is removing interactive titles like
- 11:07Black Mirror, Bandersnatch, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
- 11:10Kimmy versus the Reverend. This news comes after the
- 11:13service announced it would no longer be investing in creating
- 11:16this format of content. Journalist Jay Peters for The
- 11:20Verge argues that this is another example of Netflix
- 11:23struggling to find its footing in the gaming category.
- 11:25Quote The D listings are yet another example of Netflix
- 11:29struggling to find its footing in gaming.
- 11:32While Netflix has a robust slate of mobile titles that are
- 11:35increasingly based on its own reality TV shows, the company
- 11:39recently shut down its AAA game studio before it released a
- 11:43game. And Netflix's gaming streaming
- 11:45beta is still in testing despite expanding to the US more than a
- 11:49year ago. That's really interesting
- 11:51insight. I actually didn't even know that
- 11:53Netflix was trying to get into gaming.
- 11:55I mean, we used to say this all the time, Jordy and I on this
- 11:57podcast. But like, can the platforms just
- 12:00like stick to their niche? Can they just stick to what
- 12:03they're doing? Like, do you really need like
- 12:06the entire market share because you just like are so desperate
- 12:10for more money? Like that's what it appears, at
- 12:13least as consumers, that is how it appears.
- 12:15And I get it. There is a ceiling and Netflix
- 12:17is probably pretty close to reaching that ceiling.
- 12:20So they're trying to expand and figure out new ways.
- 12:23But like at some point it's just like, this is corporate greed.
- 12:27Like, let's chill out. But I also think from a business
- 12:30perspective, it's interesting. Like I like hearing things like
- 12:33this because obviously as a business owner myself, I like
- 12:37reading about things that very successful companies have tried
- 12:40and failed at because it just it makes me feel better.
- 12:43It's like solidarity. I'm like, oh, me and Netflix one
- 12:46in the same. No, but it's it's interesting
- 12:50from yeah, like like a corporate industry behind the scenes
- 12:54perspective to see it is normal to test things, to try things
- 12:58and they just don't go the way that you planned.
- 13:01I mean, we have lots of examples of that in recent years and
- 13:05social media and stuff like that.
- 13:07When you think about IGTV, first one that comes to mind, What the
- 13:11fuck happened to IGTVI? Fear YouTube Shorts might head
- 13:15down that path. I don't, no.
- 13:18Is anyone scrolling through shorts?
- 13:20I don't think so. Interesting insight here.
- 13:23I remember when Black Mirror Bander Snatch came out, it was
- 13:27like a big deal. So I guess they had a hard time
- 13:29recreating, you know, kind of the flurry, the frenzy around
- 13:33that again. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 13:36today. Thank you so much for listening
- 13:38to mini scroll. Please rate, review and
- 13:41subscribe. Please rate US on Spotify.
- 13:44We're trying to get our Spotify reviews up.
- 13:46I love you guys and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 13:49Bye.
