- 0:00Speaker 1: Opening weekends upon us kick off the season Friday against Colgate.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Just want to get your thoughts heading into opening weekend.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it's hard to believe it's already here, but it's exciting,
- 0:16Speaker 2: that's for sure. We've had you know. Now, this is
- 0:19Speaker 2: our fifth week of practice, so I think our guys
- 0:21Speaker 2: are chomping at the bit to get going and play
- 0:24Speaker 2: some real games. So we're looking forward to opening up
- 0:27Speaker 2: against Colgate in Tuscano this Friday night. Awesome.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I will open up for questions. If you guys could
- 0:34Speaker 1: just raise your hand, I'll get to you.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Dan. We'll start you off.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Do you have any update on Satar and whether he's
- 0:43Speaker 3: going to be able to play or if you know
- 0:44Speaker 3: how long he might be out now?
- 0:47Speaker 2: Not yet, No, we're still waiting on compliance. We're hopefully
- 0:50Speaker 2: going to get a clarification either today, hopefully today or
- 0:55Speaker 2: tomorrow at some point, but I'm not sure. Like I
- 0:59Speaker 2: would then, I wouldn't bet that he'd be eligible list Friday,
- 1:06Speaker 2: but we're hoping it'll be shortly after.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Brandy will go over to you morning, calv How you doing.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I'm great, Randy? You great?
- 1:17Speaker 4: Can't wait for Friday?
- 1:19Speaker 2: Okay?
- 1:20Speaker 4: You know at media Day, you mentioned that you feel
- 1:24Speaker 4: your team speed has improved this year. Who are some
- 1:26Speaker 4: guys you know I should be on the lookout Friday
- 1:29Speaker 4: night who could really motor and call attention to Yeah.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I think, well, obviously there's some returning players in Perceval
- 1:39Speaker 2: and Tattle and Muldowney that and Chandor that can you know,
- 1:42Speaker 2: really skate and get up and down the ice. But
- 1:45Speaker 2: I think Ethan Gardoula is a kid that skates really well.
- 1:48Speaker 2: I think Kayden Shahan's a kid that skates really well.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Kai Jan Varia skates really well on the back end.
- 1:58Speaker 2: So that those are just a few there that I
- 2:01Speaker 2: think will add to our overall team speed.
- 2:04Speaker 4: As you go through, you know, the preseason, getting ready
- 2:08Speaker 4: for an opening night and you have somewhat limited time together,
- 2:13Speaker 4: how do you decide onlines and do you recruit thinking
- 2:17Speaker 4: for lines or does that develop in these days leading
- 2:20Speaker 4: up to the season when you see the chemistry on
- 2:22Speaker 4: the ice.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's tricky.
- 2:27Speaker 4: You know.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Hudson Chandor came in and he was a fourth line center,
- 2:30Speaker 2: you know, but he eventually moves himself up to a
- 2:33Speaker 2: first line center. So Chase Bradley played on our fourth
- 2:36Speaker 2: line at one point and became a first line type player.
- 2:39Speaker 2: So you like to see those kids that sometimes what
- 2:43Speaker 2: you might see Friday night might be very different come
- 2:46Speaker 2: February or March. But we've had, like I said, four
- 2:52Speaker 2: weeks to kind of watch how kids play well. You know,
- 2:55Speaker 2: what kids play well together, what might mesh. So we'll
- 3:00Speaker 2: go off of that. But it's still you know, as
- 3:02Speaker 2: I've said many times, Randy, that we cannot replicate in practice.
- 3:08Speaker 2: It's impossible. I've talked to a bunch of coaches in
- 3:10Speaker 2: different sports. In your preseason, you cannot replicate how our
- 3:15Speaker 2: opponent's gonna play. It's just a completely different level. So
- 3:19Speaker 2: we'll find out more about our team, you know, come
- 3:22Speaker 2: Friday night.
- 3:24Speaker 4: And one final question on a specific player, Merdtod you
- 3:28Speaker 4: know lit up the BHL, especially on power play. Is
- 3:31Speaker 4: he somebody that you know we we might see on
- 3:34Speaker 4: the power play.
- 3:36Speaker 2: He's another kid that skates really well. He's been hurt
- 3:40Speaker 2: for you know, he's back playing now, but he was
- 3:44Speaker 2: hurt previous two weeks, so we'll get to kind of
- 3:47Speaker 2: still assessed to where he's at. But he missed a
- 3:51Speaker 2: you know, probably two weeks of training camp.
- 3:53Speaker 4: But so we'll see, all right, we will see Friday.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Thanks, you got it, Yeah, Joe will jump over to you.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Thanks Colon morning, coach. How are you? I'm great, Joe yourself,
- 4:08Speaker 2: I'm good, Thank you, Calvin. The five weeks, what's been
- 4:12Speaker 2: the area that you've seen the most improvement in your team? Well, again,
- 4:19Speaker 2: I'm hoping it's in the offensive zone, Joe. It was
- 4:22Speaker 2: an area where we struggled to score goals last year
- 4:25Speaker 2: and it's been an emphasis and a focal point of
- 4:27Speaker 2: our preseason and it's an area that I'd like to
- 4:32Speaker 2: see all that work we've put in in the preseason,
- 4:37Speaker 2: I'd like to see that paid dividends come Friday night.
- 4:41Speaker 2: What strengths in goal does Tyler bring to your team?
- 4:45Speaker 2: Obviously familiar with him from New Hampshire, but what made
- 4:49Speaker 2: him someone that you were actively pursuing in the portal. Well, one,
- 4:56Speaker 2: he's an experienced Hockey East goaltender, like he's had experience
- 5:00Speaker 2: playing in this league. So when he went into the portal,
- 5:03Speaker 2: that was certainly attractive to us because we didn't have
- 5:07Speaker 2: a goaltender with that, so that was something that was attractive.
- 5:11Speaker 2: He was a very young goalie coming into college. You know,
- 5:16Speaker 2: I still think his best hockey's in front of him.
- 5:19Speaker 2: So those were two things that you know, we're appealing
- 5:23Speaker 2: to us when he went into the transfer portal. And
- 5:28Speaker 2: finally for me this time around, when you go into
- 5:31Speaker 2: an opening weekend, is it more about what you do
- 5:34Speaker 2: than worried about what Colgate does? I mean, obviously they
- 5:38Speaker 2: have a lot of guys back from last year, not
- 5:40Speaker 2: their top scorer, not there number one goalie. But what's
- 5:44Speaker 2: the mindset when you approach this opening weekend. I think
- 5:49Speaker 2: it's always you know, whether it's the opening weekend or
- 5:52Speaker 2: whether it's a Friday night in February. I think it's
- 5:55Speaker 2: got to be more about what we do. And I
- 5:57Speaker 2: think the best teams make the other teams change your
- 6:01Speaker 2: game plan, as opposed to us trying to game plan
- 6:05Speaker 2: for an opponent. So now there's always a few things
- 6:07Speaker 2: they may do in the power player, they may run
- 6:09Speaker 2: a face off play. That's of note that we've got
- 6:12Speaker 2: to make sure we prepare for. But by and large,
- 6:16Speaker 2: I want us to be dictating the terms of the
- 6:20Speaker 2: hockey game, not us reacting to how they play.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Thank you, Dan, we'll jump back to you.
- 6:31Speaker 3: You mentioned how tough it is to replicate playing an
- 6:34Speaker 3: opponent until that first game. So have you ever considered
- 6:38Speaker 3: doing an exhibition this weekend or opening with an exhibition?
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yes, you know, we got you know a lot of
- 6:46Speaker 2: people got away from exhibitions because of we're having a
- 6:54Speaker 2: pay to play a Canadian team, you know, to bring
- 6:56Speaker 2: them down here. And I don't know how much we
- 6:58Speaker 2: got out of that. But now that they've changed the
- 7:02Speaker 2: rule where we could play another college team, yes, I
- 7:05Speaker 2: would be open to that. We just unfortunately had locked
- 7:10Speaker 2: these uh weekends in before you know, they changed the rules.
- 7:15Speaker 2: So that's the short answer. But yeah, no, I'd love
- 7:20Speaker 2: to play when and I'd love to like I like
- 7:23Speaker 2: using this weekend to get going because it allows you
- 7:27Speaker 2: to space out your schedule a little bit. If we
- 7:29Speaker 2: didn't play games this weekend, our first half might be
- 7:31Speaker 2: a little more condensed. Uh, you know, where you're playing
- 7:34Speaker 2: a lot of games, maybe a midweek game would you
- 7:37Speaker 2: try to avoid? I was, I would. I would hope
- 7:41Speaker 2: that maybe they even change it so you could play
- 7:44Speaker 2: your one exhibition game, you know, in September. That would
- 7:48Speaker 2: be really beneficial for as far as I'm concerned.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Then there's the change in the schedule where I mean
- 7:57Speaker 3: it shifts it up one day. But do you like
- 8:00Speaker 3: the ability to start on a Friday as opposed to Saturday.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Yeah? I do. It just keeps us more in line
- 8:05Speaker 2: with how we our normal week goes. And it also
- 8:09Speaker 2: like we had to go to Colgate last year Saturday Sunday,
- 8:12Speaker 2: and you know you're getting back late Sunday night. Kids
- 8:15Speaker 2: have school the next days. It certainly and I hate
- 8:20Speaker 2: competing with the NFL. You know that's usually never You're
- 8:25Speaker 2: not going to win that battle on most Sundays. So
- 8:29Speaker 2: I would definitely prefer to play Friday Saturday night.
- 8:32Speaker 3: What about some of the other rule changes, the getting
- 8:35Speaker 3: rid of the face off penalty and just kicking guys
- 8:38Speaker 3: out of a circle again and losing the double jeopardy
- 8:43Speaker 3: penalty where if you score on the delayed penalty you
- 8:46Speaker 3: get to keep the power play. I think there's some
- 8:49Speaker 3: changes to the high stick rules. Anything that you really
- 8:53Speaker 3: like or don't like in those changes.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I like getting rid of the double jeopardy I thought
- 8:58Speaker 2: I never ever liked that rule. I thought it could
- 9:00Speaker 2: really change a game quickly, So I think that's a
- 9:04Speaker 2: good change. What was the first one he said?
- 9:07Speaker 3: The kicking guys out of the face off circle again
- 9:09Speaker 3: instead of the warning and the penalty.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't mind that either, because real good face
- 9:14Speaker 2: off guys knew they had one free b and they
- 9:16Speaker 2: could cheat. And where it was supposed to speed the
- 9:19Speaker 2: game up, I think it actually slowed it down because
- 9:21Speaker 2: no one was ever dropping the pocket on the first
- 9:24Speaker 2: everybody was cheating, so that I'm not so opposed to
- 9:28Speaker 2: that either. The last one, what was it? Yeah, Yeah,
- 9:37Speaker 2: that is a tricky one because I do agree with it.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Like Zadano, Chara's high stick is different than Brian Gionta's. Right.
- 9:49Speaker 2: That being said, I don't like it when it comes
- 9:52Speaker 2: to a goal because it's very clear cut and dried
- 9:56Speaker 2: around the goal. It has been for years that it's
- 9:59Speaker 2: the top to the crossbar, and now we're going to
- 10:02Speaker 2: get you know, a six foot six player to a
- 10:07Speaker 2: five foot six player. It's different, and I don't like
- 10:11Speaker 2: that because when it comes to a goal, I think
- 10:14Speaker 2: it should just be the crossbar. But everywhere else in
- 10:17Speaker 2: the ice, I do think it speeds up the game
- 10:19Speaker 2: and it makes.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Sense with the face off change. Are you working more
- 10:25Speaker 3: with wingers or guys that maybe you wouldn't expect to
- 10:28Speaker 3: be on the faceoff dot as much this season now
- 10:30Speaker 3: that there's a higher probability that they're going to have
- 10:33Speaker 3: to go in and take some face offs.
- 10:35Speaker 2: So we've always tried to have two players on each
- 10:38Speaker 2: line that can take a face off, primarily a LEFTI
- 10:41Speaker 2: and alrighty, because I think it's much easier to win
- 10:45Speaker 2: faceoffs on your backhand. So I don't know if you've
- 10:48Speaker 2: noticed that over the past few years, but we've had
- 10:52Speaker 2: usually two kids on a line, and if it's in
- 10:54Speaker 2: the left dot, a left, you will take it, and
- 10:56Speaker 2: if it's in the right dot, a right, you'll take it.
- 10:58Speaker 2: So you know, if we have a line where we're
- 11:03Speaker 2: definitely gonna have to have a winger to be able
- 11:05Speaker 2: to take a draw or at least tie up on
- 11:07Speaker 2: a draw, but I've always tried to have two kids
- 11:10Speaker 2: on the line be able to take a draw.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Then in goal, you know, just how has the competition
- 11:18Speaker 3: gone throughout the fall, and how are you liking how
- 11:22Speaker 3: the guys are playing coming into the first weekend.
- 11:25Speaker 2: It's been great. The one that would be a great
- 11:30Speaker 2: benefit of an exhibition game, Dan, because you could get
- 11:33Speaker 2: all your goalies in for a period, you know, and
- 11:36Speaker 2: give them, give them some game action. So again, it's
- 11:39Speaker 2: it's really hard to, like I said, replicate what it's
- 11:44Speaker 2: going to be like playing in a game for those goaltenders.
- 11:47Speaker 2: So but I like the competition, and you know, I
- 11:51Speaker 2: think we're going to be uh. I feel good about
- 11:54Speaker 2: that position.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Do you imagine it's going to look more like the
- 11:58Speaker 3: last couple of years where you you've got a couple
- 12:02Speaker 3: guys starting maybe even splitting the games, or could you
- 12:07Speaker 3: imagine where it's one guy really runs with it.
- 12:10Speaker 2: I'm not sure. I just want one guy that helps
- 12:13Speaker 2: us win games every single night. So whether that's two
- 12:16Speaker 2: guys or whether that's one guy, I'll just let that
- 12:19Speaker 2: play out.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Do you know who you're going with on Friday?
- 12:23Speaker 2: Not yet? You knew the answer to that question. I know.
- 12:29Speaker 3: It doesn't mean I didn't have to ask it.
- 12:33Speaker 1: We got anything else for go ahead?
- 12:34Speaker 2: Randy?
- 12:35Speaker 4: Yeah, just one more? You know, guys like Bradley and Capoon,
- 12:40Speaker 4: we're so heavy on the four check. I know you
- 12:42Speaker 4: got some size with Witcomb. I mean, is that something
- 12:46Speaker 4: we can still expect? You know, you've had a physical
- 12:49Speaker 4: brand of play at say the last few years. Are
- 12:53Speaker 4: there any guys that are particularly you know, good hitters
- 12:56Speaker 4: and heavy on the four check on this roster, well.
- 13:00Speaker 2: You know, just because you're heavy and you can deliver
- 13:03Speaker 2: a bone crushing hit doesn't mean you're a great four checker.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Not to say that they weren't, I'm one of my
- 13:09Speaker 2: point is, you know, Joey Muldowney and Jake Percival and
- 13:13Speaker 2: Tristan Fraser and uh, you know Ryan Cattle, they're as
- 13:18Speaker 2: quick as anybody. They get on people, and if it's
- 13:23Speaker 2: a lot about stick detail, it's about getting in there
- 13:26Speaker 2: quick and not giving the defenseman time to get his
- 13:28Speaker 2: eyes up ice. So there's a lot of different ways
- 13:32Speaker 2: you can be effective on the fore check without having
- 13:35Speaker 2: to run somebody through the glass. So I still think
- 13:39Speaker 2: we're going to be a very effective for checking team.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Thanks all right, Joe, we'll wrap it up with you. Thanks.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Two questions, cav Number one, U losing Andrew Lucas, you
- 13:50Speaker 2: lose a pretty good offensive defenseman. Who do you look
- 13:54Speaker 2: to to kind of step up into that role? Can
- 13:56Speaker 2: Can Tommy Muscinio take over that role? I think he
- 14:01Speaker 2: has certainly those type of that ability to do it.
- 14:05Speaker 2: But I also think Nick Caravan who we brought in
- 14:07Speaker 2: from Princeton. Uh, you know, could possibly be running a
- 14:11Speaker 2: power play. I think kai Jan vayah. Uh, you know,
- 14:15Speaker 2: a very talented offensive freshman we brought in has the
- 14:18Speaker 2: ability to run a power play. So I think, you know,
- 14:22Speaker 2: we'll have enough in house here to you know, try
- 14:27Speaker 2: to replace Andrew, who is a terrific player for us.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Are there freshman calf where you're looking at right now?
- 14:33Speaker 2: Is potential red shirts? Or is everybody in play? I
- 14:37Speaker 2: think everybody's in play right now. I wish I had
- 14:40Speaker 2: the luxury of football with one hundred and five players,
- 14:42Speaker 2: but that's not the case. And how's your health? Not
- 14:47Speaker 2: yours personally, because you look good, but the team's health
- 14:51Speaker 2: going into this weekend. Uh, our team health is well.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Kevin Fitzgerald's going to be out for the year unfortunately,
- 15:02Speaker 2: tours ACL and practice last week and we're gonna have
- 15:05Speaker 2: to get that operated on. But other than that, I
- 15:07Speaker 2: think we're okay.
