- 0:15Welcome to Sometimes Their Side Eye, a podcast about two friends
- 0:19having real and unfiltered conversations about dogs.
- 0:22And people listen as we talk about our lives with dogs,
- 0:25training behavior, share some laughs and a whole lot of
- 0:29banter. I'm Heather.
- 0:31And I'm Christy this week. I'm excited.
- 0:34Yeah. This week we're going to do our
- 0:37favorite things. Ooh.
- 0:40Ah, I mean all just. Related Yes, of course.
- 0:46So for favorite things, actually, you know what?
- 0:49I'm going to start with a podcast.
- 0:51That's a great idea. Sarah Strimming.
- 0:55And Cog Dog Radio is probably, I mean, well, not probably.
- 0:59Is the reason we're even doing this podcast because Heather and
- 1:02I both got hooked on her podcast during the pandemic?
- 1:06Yes. And so if you're looking for
- 1:08additional podcasts, I would strongly recommend them.
- 1:11And Full disclosure, she just did her 300th episode, so if you
- 1:16decide that you are going to start at the beginning, you're
- 1:19in for it. We binged her.
- 1:21I I think we've been sure in like 6 months.
- 1:24It was it was a problem. It's so, so good.
- 1:27And it sent us down the road to other great podcasts too.
- 1:31Some are super like nerdy dog training staff like Hannah
- 1:34Branigan. And then there's also a pause
- 1:36and reward, which is a wonderful one.
- 1:39I. Love them, I know.
- 1:41I love pause and reward because I feel like it.
- 1:43It can be for your everyday relatable.
- 1:47Yes, yes, yes. OK.
- 1:49So now we have 3 podcasts, but yes, absolutely.
- 1:52Cog Dog is my fave. And if you start at the
- 1:57beginning and you are like, I don't agree with everything she
- 2:00says, that's OKI also did not agree with her, she said, which
- 2:04is what started some conversations.
- 2:06And in her 300th episode, she talks about how she doesn't
- 2:10agree with everything she said. Because we change, We evolved.
- 2:13We learn. Yeah, more new things.
- 2:16Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:17All right. Well, we got some favorite
- 2:18podcasts for people to listen to.
- 2:20I'll start out with a favorite clothing line.
- 2:23Yes, so all dog related clothing at Rescue Strong is some.
- 2:30They are such a great partner to the rescue community.
- 2:35I have met them personally and they are just amazing human
- 2:39beings as well and their clothes are super cute.
- 2:43Yeah, I have so many things from them.
- 2:46And in fact, I'm wearing one of their shirts, right?
- 2:49I think my favorite line that they did is adopt A dog and
- 2:53explore. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:54And go explore. Yeah, I really love that one.
- 2:58I like that one too, yeah, but they have lots of different They
- 3:01have stickers, shirts, license plate brackets.
- 3:05They have all kinds. Of stuff.
- 3:06Oh yeah, I have a license plate bracket from them too.
- 3:09I have a lot of things from them, so definitely check out
- 3:12Rescue Strong. Yes.
- 3:16Do we need to mention again? Of course for dog clothes, Tooth
- 3:18and Hanita. We already gushed about Alley in
- 3:21our Travel with Dogs episode, which is episode 14.
- 3:24So if you want to hear all about that, click back and give a
- 3:27listen. I think Wah wah, one of my
- 3:31favorite things that I have right now are also safety
- 3:34related, but my rough land kennels are absolutely one of my
- 3:41favorite things. They are my kennels that are in
- 3:43my car. They stay in my car for the boys
- 3:47to ride in when we travel. I've had them for a few years
- 3:51now. I just really, really love them.
- 3:53I feel so safe driving around because in Arizona you drive so
- 3:57much and I drive like 30 to 40,000 miles a year and most of
- 4:02it is dog travel. Is that all?
- 4:05I feel like you drive more than that.
- 4:07I drive less now than I used to because of Puppy Kay.
- 4:11I don't go as much, but if I was like full on competing, yeah,
- 4:15I'd probably be like 50,000 a year.
- 4:18I really just feel comfortable with them riding in those and
- 4:24then something that goes right along with those is the Primo
- 4:27pad. Which Primo pad makes a nice
- 4:31comfortable pad that is completely washable and durable
- 4:36that fits right inside your ruffling kennels.
- 4:38I also use them in lieu of a tray in my in my wire crates in
- 4:43my house. And I just love them so much
- 4:45too. They're super easy to clean.
- 4:46It gives the dogs a little cushion to lay on, but they last
- 4:50for years and years and years, so I think the ruffling kennel
- 4:55goes along with the Primo pad as some of my favorite things.
- 5:01Yeah. And and it's the rough land
- 5:02kennel impact rated or or anything like that.
- 5:06So I don't think it's officially crash rated, but all you have to
- 5:11do is look around and search around for some photos of people
- 5:15who have had car accidents and the crates have saved their dogs
- 5:19lives and I've seen some pretty heinous racks where those
- 5:23kennels have held up. They are molded, so they're
- 5:27super strong and even in the heat out here, even if they
- 5:32like, will dimple a little bit, they pop right back out because
- 5:35they're just like this, fully molded.
- 5:37I don't know if it's resin, I don't know what the material is,
- 5:40but I just really, really love them and I don't.
- 5:43And you can also hose them out. The door comes fully off and
- 5:47it's so easy to pop them out of your car and hose them out and
- 5:50dry them off. I mean, they're just very, very
- 5:53easy to use, which is good for me.
- 5:57Yeah. And they're a little bit
- 5:58lighter, Yeah. Some of the other crash rated,
- 6:02so to be fair, I won an impact crate on a raffle site, which
- 6:08was amazing because they're super, super expensive.
- 6:11So I won unpack crate that was the size for Tiago and I got it
- 6:18and I was all excited and it was so heavy that I actually sold it
- 6:22and I used the money to buy both my Roughland kennels and had
- 6:26cash left over. And I have not looked back.
- 6:29And I know every a lot of dog sports people have their
- 6:32preference one way or the other, but for me, I'm roughland all
- 6:37the way. Because it's much easier for you
- 6:39to handle by yourself. They're so easy to pop in and
- 6:42out of my car. Yeah.
- 6:43The only thing I would change, and I will probably at some
- 6:47point, if I had to do it over again, I would have gotten a
- 6:50front door and a back door. I didn't think that through.
- 6:54Well for a couple reasons. One for extra ventilation.
- 6:57And then the second reason is because if we were in a rear end
- 7:01crash, then you have a back door to be able to get the dogs out
- 7:06that way. And I didn't think that through
- 7:09when I made the purchase. Now in my car there's room from
- 7:14the rear hatch to where the crate door actually starts.
- 7:18So I'm not tied up against like some people where I'd be like I
- 7:21absolutely have to have a back door.
- 7:22But it is something that I would say, if anybody starts looking
- 7:25into them, absolutely spend the money and get the double door
- 7:28set up or a side door, depending on what your configuration is,
- 7:32so that God forbid you're ever rear-ended, you can pop your
- 7:35dogs out that way, yeah. Cool.
- 7:39What do you got? Oh, you want more of mine?
- 7:43Okay, I like it. Biothane lines, I mean, we talk
- 7:47about them plenty of times. It is absolutely one of my
- 7:51favorite things. My 30 foot and my 10 foot are my
- 7:54go to. Well, they're the two sizes I
- 7:56have. I just never found a reason to
- 7:58buy any other links. Those are my favorite links.
- 8:00Durable, washable. Get them dirty in the mouth.
- 8:03You don't really need to wash them.
- 8:05No, because. They just wipe off so easily.
- 8:08Yeah, they wipe off, but if you needed to for some reason like
- 8:11you throw it in a tub, like nothing's going to happen to it.
- 8:13At this point. I consider them unbreakable.
- 8:16I mean if you're breaking a Biotheme line, I don't know what
- 8:18you're doing. My 10 foot line is years old and
- 8:22I it's still going. I just, I really love my
- 8:25Biotheme lines. So that is absolutely on my
- 8:28list. And then for dog apparel sort of
- 8:31things, I love most things, rough wear.
- 8:34I really love Tiago's hiking harness, which is like a
- 8:38lightweight roughwear harness. And then I love them for their
- 8:43float coats or their life jackets.
- 8:46Anybody out there who has like a muscular dog, like a bulldog or
- 8:49like a Pitbull type of dog, the roughwear float coats fit just
- 8:55so much better than anything I've found.
- 8:58And if you talk to other Bulldog people, they all say, oh,
- 9:01roughwear, that's the way to go. They are shorter in the body, so
- 9:05it doesn't fit awkwardly because they're so beefy in the chest
- 9:09area and in the rib cage. And then they kind of, you know,
- 9:13well, tater thins out because he's not overweight.
- 9:18But they fit really well. Please don't hate us if you have
- 9:22a bulldog. How there's just.
- 9:26Neurotic about her dog's weights.
- 9:28I am as neurotic as the nails, so they just fit really, really
- 9:32well on like a like a muscular beefy kind of dog and they work
- 9:37really well. So that's absolutely hands down
- 9:40Roughwear, and I know they're a little bit more expensive, but
- 9:43to me tater his Roughwear coat we just used for dock diving
- 9:48well when he did and it just holds up that I've had it for
- 9:52years so. I will say if you can't afford a
- 9:55rough wear coat, at least get one with a handle on it.
- 9:58Yes, because I personally, I know Lucy goes kayaking with me
- 10:02sometimes and and she thought she could jump from the kayak to
- 10:07the shore, but when she did that she pushed the kayak away from
- 10:10the shore so she just went in the water instead.
- 10:13Huge difference to. Just grab yes.
- 10:17A handle on their back and lift them out of the water at least
- 10:21so their front legs are out of the water and then be able to
- 10:24get the rest of their body out. I would say that is a main.
- 10:28Definitely look for that. Yeah.
- 10:29I mean even like Tater's at home life jacket is the cute little
- 10:33shark fin jacket off Amazon that's like $25.00.
- 10:36But in the Arizona heat, they only last one year and then they
- 10:40die When you consider $25 each summer.
- 10:44I think his rough wear float coat was like 80, I want to say.
- 10:49But I've had it for more than three years.
- 10:51So, you know, but I also take care of it.
- 10:53Yeah. So you know, you kind of like
- 10:55weigh the the pros and cons. There Speaking of rough wear,
- 11:00like, I love Lucy's cooling vest from Yeah or cool like I think
- 11:05it's called like a swamp cooler. Oh.
- 11:08Yeah, and they have lots of different ones.
- 11:11I don't know that one is better than the other.
- 11:13The one I have is the the swamp cooler I believe is what it's
- 11:17called. It's a little long for her, I'm
- 11:19going to be honest, because her chest is so big, she had to go
- 11:23with a size up, but then her body is kind of short, so it
- 11:26goes all the way to like over her butt.
- 11:29However, that is the only reason we were able to take.
- 11:34Walks every day this summer. Like if you don't know, Arizona
- 11:39had 31 days over 110 degrees and most of those days we never got
- 11:46below 90 degrees, even for our lows.
- 11:49Even at night, Never. Never dropped below 90.
- 11:52My dad cannot handle that, so the rough wear cooling coat is
- 11:56what allowed us to still have. Walks every day.
- 11:59And if you know Lucy, that's her jam.
- 12:02That's like her. What she lives for is her daily
- 12:05walks. So you guys saved my life.
- 12:07Rough wear? Yeah.
- 12:08Honestly, like I well, I said two rough wear things.
- 12:11I just really love their products and the cooling code
- 12:14thing man that does make a difference because when Tiago
- 12:17was showing I used a cooling coat for him too.
- 12:20He had a fancy dancy sequin show code.
- 12:23Bleh but. You're still fancy?
- 12:26No? I literally said to the woman.
- 12:28I would like the least blingy. Possible, but I will say that it
- 12:33really did make a difference for him.
- 12:35I know. I'm like, how much bling can you
- 12:37put on one thing for a dog? Oh, how obnoxious can I be, You
- 12:41and Cindy, because she has some blingy, blingy shit for her
- 12:45dogs, let me tell you. Our friend Cindy showed her
- 12:48Rottweilers too, and she had some real blingy jackets.
- 12:50And I'm over here going. Can I have the least blingy
- 12:53thing that you have? For sure.
- 12:55Like I see our friend Cindy's collars and things that she
- 12:59thought. And I'm like, yes, those are my
- 13:01style. And I'm over here going, That's
- 13:03just too much. We love you, Cindy.
- 13:06They look beautiful. I'm saying like I love it.
- 13:11I want it all. What else do you Speaking of
- 13:15blingy also, so I'm going to say.
- 13:20Lucy's pearls are definitely a favorite for me.
- 13:24It just has kind of brought down a lot of like barriers or guards
- 13:29that people have up about pitbulls, a dog and girls come
- 13:33on like. Is just ridiculous and people
- 13:36love it and. In fact, I had one lady say ohh
- 13:39that dog's too bougie to be your friend to her dog.
- 13:42She told her dog, well that dog's too bougie to be your
- 13:44friend. I was like, this is a $20 like a
- 13:48dog from the pound. Like she is not so bougie.
- 13:50She just dresses up funny, so like.
- 13:53I will say I got my pearls from a company called BB Babies so
- 13:59they do have a reputation for having long wait time.
- 14:02So she will quote you 8 weeks, 4 to 8 weeks.
- 14:06I got mine in 10 weeks. However, most of my friends who
- 14:11ordered on the same day got theirs in 15 plus weeks.
- 14:16So why are you mentioning them, Christy?
- 14:19The reason I mention them is because pearls are fun and I
- 14:23have had Lucy's pearls, I wanna say 5-6 years so and she wears
- 14:28them all the time. And she does wear them a lot.
- 14:30And they're just now starting to show where.
- 14:34Wow. So I feel like that's such a
- 14:36quality product. And like, she went to the ocean
- 14:38with them. She is in the lake with them.
- 14:41I you guys, I like, have cleaned out so much poop from her pearls
- 14:46because she loves to roll in poop.
- 14:48Like, not Like it's. Literally.
- 14:51Like, bitch, I don't care. I got my pearls on.
- 14:53I'm still going to run in that poop.
- 14:55She's like, look at that out poop for it.
- 14:58I'm like. Oh oh poop and the girl.
- 15:03Isn't that a shining recommendation for the company?
- 15:05Even your dog can roll an elk poop in these pearls.
- 15:10Some piece so fancy. I do know there's other vendors
- 15:16on Etsy and so if having the correct time quoted to you is
- 15:22important then. Yeah, maybe go with a different
- 15:24vendor. I just don't, I can't say how
- 15:26their product, yeah pulls up, yes.
- 15:28I just know what I have and I I will say I have enjoyed having
- 15:33the those pearls. So, yeah, I mean I feel like
- 15:37waiting, you know, of months versus having like something
- 15:40that lasts that long and is durable on a dog, that's pretty
- 15:44impressive. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:47What else he got there? He got any other?
- 15:53Do I have no other part? Oh, I do.
- 15:55You know what I'm going to say? What?
- 15:58My nail files from Sally Beauty Supply.
- 16:02Actually, those are my favorite too.
- 16:04All right, everybody asked me. I don't know how many times I've
- 16:07sent, like photos of these nail files.
- 16:11The nail files that I used to do both Tater and Thiago's nails
- 16:15are from Sally Beauty Supply. I will link them in the show
- 16:18notes. My favorite one is the
- 16:21rectangular 100 grit black nail file.
- 16:26Now sometimes they're not available during the pandemic.
- 16:29It was real sad, but it was real sad.
- 16:34I ordered a different brand, and I regret it every moment.
- 16:37I don't buy money on Amazon. Amazon.
- 16:39They're junk. They don't stand.
- 16:41They don't. Yep.
- 16:42They don't withstand anything. I have tried to, like, search
- 16:46them from other sources. No, Sally Beauty Supply, The
- 16:49rectangular black is the way to go.
- 16:52If they don't have it, they have a 101 eighty black one that's
- 16:58like, what would that shape be? It's like, I don't know, some
- 17:02kind of gone, like a hexagon, a Pentagon.
- 17:06No it is. It's like some some kind of
- 17:10shape, not not rectangular gong shape, gone shape.
- 17:16Anyway, you can't get the rectangular ones.
- 17:18That's my second choice, but also from Sally's what I do is
- 17:23well, during the pandemic when they were hard to find.
- 17:25If I was anywhere near Sally's I would pop in and just buy
- 17:28whatever rectangular ones they had.
- 17:30But you can also buy them online.
- 17:32Now they seem to be back in stock, or if you go to Sally's
- 17:36just buy five or six at a time. They're only like $1.89 and that
- 17:40way you have a back stock. I use 1A week, so I usually buy
- 17:4510 at a time and I will. Say like I, you probably use
- 17:50yours a. Few times don't do it as long
- 17:53like I don't. Do Lucy's nails as much as you,
- 17:56but like mine lasted for months. But I also have a Rottweiler
- 18:00with really hard black nails, OK?
- 18:02Yeah, and Lucy's nails are pretty.
- 18:05Relatively soft I feel like compared to Tiagos.
- 18:08Yeah, like this last one. OK, so I did fin the lab puppies
- 18:13nails on Friday and then I used it on my dogs and then I used
- 18:17the same one to do a little Chihuahua.
- 18:20Cersei mellow niece Cersei. I used it to do her nails too,
- 18:24so that is multi use. But if I tried to use the same
- 18:28one twice for Tiago, I don't think it would quite do the job
- 18:31I need. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:33So just know it may last longer than than once a week.
- 18:37Yeah, and most people don't do their dogs nails once a week
- 18:40like me. So absolutely one of my totally
- 18:43top favorite things. And then the last thing is not
- 18:47like a particular product necessarily, but it's something
- 18:51that I just love to have that makes my life easier.
- 18:57And that is if I have a dog room at my house, like one of my
- 19:02bedrooms is turned into a dog crate room and it has carpet, I
- 19:06will buy a $30. Well it was $30 before COVID,
- 19:11$30 piece of linoleum from Lowe's precut, and I will put
- 19:17that down over top of the carpet to put the crates on.
- 19:22And I love it for a lot of reasons.
- 19:25One, it keeps the stink from getting into the carpet, cause
- 19:28dogs, and if anybody gets sick, it's very easy to clean.
- 19:33It makes it easier to clean the crates, It makes it easier to
- 19:36clean up dog hair. I mean, all the reasons I've
- 19:40been doing this for 20 years, putting linoleum down.
- 19:45And then it's not super expensive.
- 19:47So when you're done, if you move, you can, you know, toss it
- 19:51out. In the old days when I really
- 19:54had no extra money to pay for a linoleum, I would actually find
- 19:59it on free cycle. Or I would post on free cycle
- 20:02and ask if anyone had remnants of linoleum.
- 20:05And you can just get a piece that's maybe 2 feet by two feet
- 20:08wider than your crate on all sides and you can use that.
- 20:13So that's kind of like a way to get around it if you don't have
- 20:16extra money to purchase it, but I find it super useful and it
- 20:19makes my life easier. It's.
- 20:22Probably good even for like nice hardwood floors.
- 20:25Yes, throw some linoleum over it.
- 20:27So yeah, like in case they're splashing or or like you said,
- 20:30all dogs getting sick. Yeah, and the the crates can
- 20:34scratch. Like if your crates are older.
- 20:36Actually that reminds me because we had laminate floors in our
- 20:40last house that we had put in and I had it down over top of
- 20:43the laminate too. Because you know what?
- 20:46If a dog gets sick and you're away at work for like 4 hours
- 20:49and it's gonna sink into something like laminate.
- 20:52So nasty. But yeah, so that's one of my
- 20:56little hacks. That is a favorite thing.
- 21:00So one of my favorite things that is also not a product would
- 21:04be my. Very real grass in the backyard.
- 21:09So this, this is, this is controversial, No.
- 21:14Yeah, not really. We're, we're starting, we're
- 21:16stirring a little controversy here.
- 21:18So in Arizona and a lot at the West, we're on water
- 21:23conservation or trying to be water conscious.
- 21:25So one of the big things has been to put in a fake grass, and
- 21:30I definitely considered doing that, but then ended up.
- 21:34Just keeping my real grass because I thought budget wise I
- 21:37don't need fake grass, but as I've cut my real grass I've
- 21:40decided that is the way to go for me because my dog loves to
- 21:45just go out and lay in the grass and it is significantly cooler
- 21:51than fake grass. And it keeps my yard
- 21:55significantly cooler overall as well.
- 21:59And there's a lot of wildlife that comes then, like all the
- 22:02birds come and eat the bugs in the grass.
- 22:04And for some of you that's a negative or a positive, I think.
- 22:09I feel like it's a it's enrichment for some dogs because
- 22:13it's birds or? I do like birds, actually.
- 22:17I like wildlife coming to my house and in Arizona wildlife is
- 22:22is birds. Because I'm not having an elk or
- 22:26a come through my house, not down here.
- 22:29Yeah, and I'm too far away from the mountains for thankfully for
