Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: All-Star Game roster changes, Trade Deadline updates, Wild Card madness
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Monday edition of Fair Territory, the
- 0:08Speaker 1: All Star edition of Fair Territory, coming to you live
- 0:11Speaker 1: from Philadelphia. One of my favorite weeks of the year,
- 0:14Speaker 1: All Star Week, and we've already had the Draft and
- 0:18Speaker 1: the Futures Game, and we're looking forward to on Monday
- 0:20Speaker 1: night the Home Run Derby and then on Tuesday the
- 0:23Speaker 1: All Star Game on Fox. I'll be part of that
- 0:26Speaker 1: production and it will be quite the production it always is.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We always do some really cool things on the All
- 0:32Speaker 1: Star broadcast, so I want to get into that. I
- 0:35Speaker 1: also want to get into the pennant races. We'll do
- 0:37Speaker 1: that in the second segment. And how crazy this first
- 0:41Speaker 1: half has been just with all of the teams in
- 0:44Speaker 1: play here. We'll get into that, But first I want
- 0:47Speaker 1: to talk about the All Star Game, because again, it
- 0:49Speaker 1: is one of my favorite events of the year. But
- 0:52Speaker 1: there always are players who drop out, bail out, get injured,
- 0:57Speaker 1: whatever the phrase you might want to use. And this year,
- 1:02Speaker 1: I don't know that it's an inordinate number of players
- 1:04Speaker 1: who are not going to participate, but certainly some of
- 1:08Speaker 1: the biggest names in the game are not going to participate.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Now we're gonna go through it. You can see the
- 1:12Speaker 1: names right there, Vlad Junior, Aaron Judge, Byron Buxton, Nick Kurtz,
- 1:16Speaker 1: Cam Schlitzler, and Rangers Suarez. That's just the AO. And
- 1:19Speaker 1: then in the anl show, Hey, the Miz, Chase Burns, Braxton, Airscraft,
- 1:24Speaker 1: Zach Wheeler, he of course was invited late and then declined,
- 1:29Speaker 1: and Paul Skens. Again, some of the biggest names in
- 1:32Speaker 1: the sport are not going to be involved in the game.
- 1:36Speaker 1: And really, what the game is is a showcase for baseball.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It is a celebration of baseball, and you always want
- 1:44Speaker 1: to see the best players perform. While the game is
- 1:47Speaker 1: an exhibition, what we love about this is the possibility of,
- 1:52Speaker 1: for instance, the Miz facing Aaron Judge. Well, we're not
- 1:54Speaker 1: gonna get that this year. We're gonna get some great players.
- 1:57Speaker 1: There are many, many great players still in this game.
- 2:00Speaker 1: But let's go through just what happened for the rosters
- 2:03Speaker 1: to get to this point. In the American League, Vlad
- 2:07Speaker 1: Junior elected starter in the American League at first base.
- 2:11Speaker 1: He backs out because he has what he's described as
- 2:15Speaker 1: a back problem that's kind of bothered him the whole
- 2:17Speaker 1: first half. And then Nick Kurtz, the players elected replacement
- 2:22Speaker 1: for him next on the ballot. He is injured as
- 2:25Speaker 1: well and cannot participate. So you're not getting Nick Kurtz
- 2:28Speaker 1: in his homecoming to southeastern Pennsylvania. South central Pennsylvania is
- 2:33Speaker 1: where he's from, Lancaster. And while we got McGonagall coming back,
- 2:37Speaker 1: we've got Trout coming back. Nick Kurtz, I'm sure would
- 2:40Speaker 1: have loved to have been in this game. So that's
- 2:43Speaker 1: the American League and what you have at first base
- 2:46Speaker 1: coming into the game, or Wilson Contreras very deserving, Munataka
- 2:51Speaker 1: Morikami injured for a good chunk of the first half,
- 2:55Speaker 1: but also deserving. And you also have two of the
- 2:58Speaker 1: elected outfielder Aaron Judge and Byron Buxton. As we mentioned,
- 3:03Speaker 1: they're not gonna participate either, replaced by Tristan Peters of
- 3:06Speaker 1: the White Sox and Saddan Raphaela of the Red Sox.
- 3:09Speaker 1: So again some of the bigger names, and we're not
- 3:12Speaker 1: gonna see them. And then you heard yesterday Dylan sez
- 3:16Speaker 1: Get's name the starting pitcher for the All Star Game,
- 3:19Speaker 1: and Cam Schlitler, through Aaron Boone, says he's not going
- 3:22Speaker 1: to participate he's of course the great Yankees young starter.
- 3:26Speaker 1: He is apprehensive about throwing hard in an All Star
- 3:29Speaker 1: Game after a big first half. Again, you can understand
- 3:33Speaker 1: every excuse, every injury, everything you're going to hear me described.
- 3:39Speaker 1: At the same time, it's just disappointing. Now in Schlitler's case,
- 3:43Speaker 1: he will not necessarily be replaced on the roster because
- 3:46Speaker 1: he is available. Ranger Suarez is out. He had a
- 3:49Speaker 1: great first half of the Red Sox, and I know
- 3:52Speaker 1: Red Sox fans are wondering where the heck is Sonny Gray. Well,
- 3:56Speaker 1: Nick Martinez was added from the Tampa Bay Rays, the
- 3:59Speaker 1: fifth member of the on the team, and Sonny Gray,
- 4:03Speaker 1: at least for now, there's one day left here is
- 4:06Speaker 1: not on the roster, and he's quite deserving. Top five
- 4:09Speaker 1: in the American League in era. He's had a wonderful
- 4:11Speaker 1: first half, as has Ranger and as has Nick Martinez,
- 4:15Speaker 1: who will be appearing in his first All Star Game.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Great veteran, beloved teammate. This is quite deserved for Nick Martinez.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Now in the National League, of course, no Tani, and
- 4:26Speaker 1: he's got this knee issue that's been bothering him. He's
- 4:29Speaker 1: gonna have a drain during the break. He's gonna have
- 4:31Speaker 1: a painkilling injection. He's been playing with this thing. He
- 4:35Speaker 1: hit two whole runs since announcing this, and maybe you
- 4:39Speaker 1: could argue he can get his knee drained in Philly
- 4:41Speaker 1: and just show up and wave to the crowd. I
- 4:44Speaker 1: don't know that we need to ask that if show
- 4:46Speaker 1: hail Tani. He gives plenty to the game, and it's
- 4:49Speaker 1: incredibly disappointing he will not be here. But can't rip
- 4:53Speaker 1: the guy for it. My goodness, he's kind of feeling
- 4:56Speaker 1: it right now. And he's feeling it because he does
- 4:58Speaker 1: more than any other play in the sport, pitching, hitting,
- 5:01Speaker 1: the whole deal. All right, No, miss, he's tired, understandably. No.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Chase Burns one of the bright young pitchers in the game.
- 5:08Speaker 1: He won't be there either. And here's the curious one.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Braxton Ashcraft of the Pirates named to the team to
- 5:15Speaker 1: replace Paul Skeens. And when I named my team I
- 5:19Speaker 1: had Skeins on it and Braxton Ashcraft not on it,
- 5:22Speaker 1: and Pirates fans said, hey, what are you doing? Ashcraft
- 5:25Speaker 1: is pitching better than Skeens is. Well, turns out Ashcraft
- 5:29Speaker 1: needs a replacement as the replacement because he too threw
- 5:32Speaker 1: ninety five pitches Saturday and is not ready to go
- 5:35Speaker 1: in the game. So we've had Luzardo added from the Phillies,
- 5:39Speaker 1: Justin Robeleski very deserving from the Dodgers, and Griffin Foster,
- 5:44Speaker 1: a free agent who's signed with the Nationals for five
- 5:46Speaker 1: and a half million dollars in the offseason, came back
- 5:49Speaker 1: from Japan. He is added as well to the team.
- 5:53Speaker 1: So he's thirty years old. He's a guy that kind
- 5:56Speaker 1: of as an underdog story obviously, and the Nationals are
- 5:59Speaker 1: well represent here with Wood, James Wood of course, cj
- 6:03Speaker 1: Abram's end now Foster, Griffin. So one of the questions
- 6:09Speaker 1: that we have every year with the All Star Game is,
- 6:11Speaker 1: all right, how do you get more pictures involved? How
- 6:14Speaker 1: do you get the pictures finally to be ready to
- 6:17Speaker 1: pitch in this game instead of the Sunday starter rule
- 6:19Speaker 1: when you become ineligible. How do you solve this? Now?
- 6:23Speaker 1: My colleague get Fox Sports John Smaltz has talked about
- 6:26Speaker 1: this and others have as well. Move the game back
- 6:28Speaker 1: to Wednesday. That way the Sunday starters will be eligible,
- 6:32Speaker 1: take a little bit more time, make the break a
- 6:34Speaker 1: little bit longer, and that way maybe you get a
- 6:37Speaker 1: better involvement, better participation from some of the pictures. Of course,
- 6:41Speaker 1: teams have concerns about whether these guys can go or
- 6:44Speaker 1: should go, and you can understand that, again, none of
- 6:47Speaker 1: these reasons for players not being here are invalid. They're
- 6:52Speaker 1: frustrating and you wish they could be. Obviously not factors
- 6:57Speaker 1: in this particular conversation, but they are now when you
- 7:02Speaker 1: have players bowing out for dubious reasons, and I'm not
- 7:05Speaker 1: saying any of the guys this year are dubious, but
- 7:08Speaker 1: there are ways to address that too to encourage participation.
- 7:13Speaker 1: The bonuses that the players receive for getting selected, those
- 7:16Speaker 1: are bonuses that they earn. They're in their contracts. You
- 7:19Speaker 1: get one, two hundred thousand, whatever these guys have in
- 7:22Speaker 1: their contracts. Good luck trying to take away those bonuses
- 7:26Speaker 1: when they've been selected and are injured. You can't do that.
- 7:30Speaker 1: The union would fight that, players would fight that. It
- 7:32Speaker 1: just wouldn't be a good look. You can also say, okay,
- 7:36Speaker 1: if you're not showing up at least for the festivities
- 7:39Speaker 1: and you've got no real reason, and again, most of
- 7:43Speaker 1: these guys will have some reason, then you can say, well,
- 7:45Speaker 1: strip it off their Baseball reference page, don't say they
- 7:48Speaker 1: were designated an All Star. And again it's really problematic.
- 7:52Speaker 1: So I don't really see a solution here. It's just
- 7:55Speaker 1: the nature of the game. You have the All Star
- 7:58Speaker 1: Game in the middle of the season, so every year
- 8:01Speaker 1: you're gonna have a certain number of players who are hurt.
- 8:03Speaker 1: We didn't even discuss Jose Ramirez are the Guardians, one
- 8:07Speaker 1: of the big names in the game. He won't be here.
- 8:09Speaker 1: He's been out for quite a while now. So all right,
- 8:13Speaker 1: we're getting ready for the game. We're getting ready for
- 8:14Speaker 1: the derby tonight. I'm so excited to see Harper and
- 8:17Speaker 1: Schwarber in Philly in the Derby, and then Harper and
- 8:20Speaker 1: Schwarber in the All Star Game as well, along with
- 8:23Speaker 1: Christopher Sanchez starting for the Phillies and a number of
- 8:27Speaker 1: other Affillies as well, Brandon marsh Luzardo. That crowd is
- 8:30Speaker 1: going to be into it. We're gonna have a lot
- 8:32Speaker 1: of fun the next two days. These two days are
- 8:35Speaker 1: always a lot of fun. And I'm not trying to
- 8:37Speaker 1: dwell on the negative and talk about all the guys
- 8:40Speaker 1: that are missing, even though I just did for about
- 8:42Speaker 1: ten minutes. All I'm trying to say is, hey, it's
- 8:45Speaker 1: a little bit less of an event without the biggest names,
- 8:48Speaker 1: and some of the biggest names are missing. All right,
- 8:51Speaker 1: We'll be back to talk about the Pennant races with
- 8:53Speaker 1: the inside dish right after this.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Many people have this problem.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I want to eat healthy, I have the will, I
- 9:00Speaker 3: don't have the time and the organization.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I need help. What do you do?
- 9:05Speaker 4: I mean you go to Factor. I got two boys
- 9:07Speaker 4: that are looking for the gains and they always come
- 9:09Speaker 4: in the house, which I'm looking for food. Now they
- 9:13Speaker 4: have actual healthy food that is great for them, and
- 9:17Speaker 4: you know what, it's ready in the fridge for them
- 9:19Speaker 4: to pop in and make it right away.
- 9:21Speaker 2: And they have meals built around your goals.
- 9:23Speaker 3: It could be weight loss, overall nutrition gains, more protein, fresh,
- 9:28Speaker 3: never frozen, over one hundred rotating weekly meals, including globally
- 9:34Speaker 3: inspired flavors like Mediterranean and Asian. I get all kinds
- 9:37Speaker 3: of different salads from Factor that I love, quick easy.
- 9:41Speaker 3: They can be ready in two minutes. Head to Factor
- 9:44Speaker 3: meals dot com, slash foul fifty off and use code
- 9:48Speaker 3: foul FIFTYFF to get fifty percent off and free daily
- 9:52Speaker 3: Greens per box with new subscription only, while supplies last
- 9:55Speaker 3: until nine twenty seven, twenty twenty six.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Time now for the inside dish of the show, where
- 10:00Speaker 1: I talk about a story I've written, a trend in
- 10:03Speaker 1: the game, or in this particular case, we're gonna talk
- 10:06Speaker 1: about the entire first half and the craziness of this season.
- 10:10Speaker 1: And the craziness of this season is summed up by
- 10:13Speaker 1: one number that I will recite at the start of
- 10:15Speaker 1: this segment, and it is this, twenty three of the
- 10:19Speaker 1: thirty teams in Major League Baseball are within four games
- 10:23Speaker 1: of a playoff spot as we enter the All Star break,
- 10:26Speaker 1: twenty three or thirty. It's an amazing number, and if
- 10:29Speaker 1: you think about it, it means that the league is
- 10:32Speaker 1: quite competitive. That's great, But the implications for the trade
- 10:35Speaker 1: deadline are quite impressive too, because they're gonna have serious
- 10:41Speaker 1: implications on what exactly transpires. Now. We don't know what's
- 10:46Speaker 1: going to transpire in so many cases yet, because so
- 10:49Speaker 1: many teams really lack definition to their season. And I'm
- 10:52Speaker 1: going to talk at the start about two teams that
- 10:56Speaker 1: I've written about quite a bit, two teams that have
- 10:58Speaker 1: been talked about a bit, the Tigers and the Red Sox,
- 11:02Speaker 1: and then we'll go through both leagues as well. Now,
- 11:04Speaker 1: the Tigers. On June first, they were twenty two and
- 11:08Speaker 1: thirty eight. There were sixteen games under five hundred, and
- 11:11Speaker 1: I wrote in The Athletic the only remaining question is
- 11:15Speaker 1: where the Trek Schoobel can establish he is healthy. He
- 11:17Speaker 1: was still out at that time. I said, Schooble's team,
- 11:20Speaker 1: the Tigers, is on the verge of achieving the near impossible,
- 11:24Speaker 1: falling out of contention in a week American League and
- 11:28Speaker 1: one of the weakest divisions in baseball, and that's with
- 11:31Speaker 1: six playoff spots available. Again, they were twenty two and
- 11:34Speaker 1: thirty eight. Well, since then, they're twenty two and fourteen.
- 11:39Speaker 1: They're eight games over five hundred. They're now eight games
- 11:42Speaker 1: under total.
- 11:43Speaker 2: And you can look at.
- 11:44Speaker 1: The standings right there and see how this is playing out.
- 11:46Speaker 1: The Tigers, this team that yes, I left for dead.
- 11:50Speaker 1: They're three and a half games out in the wildcard race.
- 11:53Speaker 1: They're six and a half games out in the division.
- 11:56Speaker 1: And they've got the best record in the American League
- 11:59Speaker 1: since June first, And it would be even better. I
- 12:02Speaker 1: know this is kind of a hypothetical kind of conversation.
- 12:04Speaker 1: But the last two days they face Zach Wheeler and
- 12:08Speaker 1: they faced Christopher Sanchez, two great pitchers, So it's understandable
- 12:12Speaker 1: when you lose to those guys. They were twenty two
- 12:14Speaker 1: to twelve after June first starting or going into those
- 12:18Speaker 1: two games. So nothing gonna be ashamed of there. So
- 12:21Speaker 1: what happens with the Tigers the next couple of weeks
- 12:24Speaker 1: will determine, leading to the August third deadline, what will happen,
- 12:28Speaker 1: because if they're in it, I have a hard time
- 12:32Speaker 1: believing they're gonna trade Schooble, and I know he'd be
- 12:35Speaker 1: leaving for only a draft pick, but you've got the
- 12:38Speaker 1: possibility of playing it out here with a two time
- 12:41Speaker 1: Sy Young Winner of potential Hall of Fan candidate, and
- 12:44Speaker 1: who knows in the American League what you might accomplish. Now,
- 12:47Speaker 1: the flip side is he's gonna walk. He's gonna walk
- 12:51Speaker 1: for only a draft pick. And if somehow you don't
- 12:52Speaker 1: make the playoffs or you're disappoint in the playoffs as
- 12:55Speaker 1: the Tigers, you're gonna regret it. Right, You're gonna think, oh,
- 12:58Speaker 1: we should have traded in four x Y and Z.
- 13:01Speaker 1: This is the calculus that the Tigers will be engaging in,
- 13:04Speaker 1: and it's quite an interesting one. They've also got the
- 13:07Speaker 1: fifth best run differential in the American League right now,
- 13:10Speaker 1: their manager AJ Hinch. You can see it right there.
- 13:14Speaker 1: They're plus twenty four for the season. Their manager A. J.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Hinch has said all along, we were a good team
- 13:20Speaker 1: playing badly, and they were early in the season. They
- 13:24Speaker 1: also had a ton of injuries that they were dealing
- 13:26Speaker 1: with and that was a problem for them. They're healthier
- 13:28Speaker 1: now than they've been. They're still gonna get Labor Torres
- 13:31Speaker 1: back some others. So if I'm the Tigers, yes, I
- 13:35Speaker 1: want to play this out again. There's still eight games
- 13:38Speaker 1: under five hundred. It's a lot, but five hundred in
- 13:41Speaker 1: this division right now is good enough for a wild
- 13:43Speaker 1: card spot. So we'll see how it plays out with
- 13:46Speaker 1: the Tigers. Now the Red Sox they're a pretty interesting
- 13:49Speaker 1: team as well, because on June thirtieth, I wrote this
- 13:53Speaker 1: the Surgeon Red Sox are somehow in the playoff hunt.
- 13:56Speaker 1: They had just won five straight and I said, you
- 13:59Speaker 1: can blaring the water down American League. And the comments
- 14:02Speaker 1: to this call, and my comments are the ones I
- 14:06Speaker 1: receive on my commns are always quite lively, but these
- 14:09Speaker 1: were exceptionally lively. People thought that was nuts. People said,
- 14:14Speaker 1: and I quote, this is Ken on weed. Then there
- 14:17Speaker 1: was a response, nah, I think he's huffing paint dinner.
- 14:21Speaker 1: He's way too excited for Bud. And then Ken loves
- 14:24Speaker 1: his big market baseball boot licking, and that's not true.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I write about all thirty teams. Now. The Red Sox
- 14:31Speaker 1: proceeded at that point to lose two and then they
- 14:34Speaker 1: won nine straight on the road, and part of the
- 14:37Speaker 1: premise of the column was that their schedule was easy,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and it did ease. That road trip was against Anaheim,
- 14:43Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Angels, against the Chicago White Sox, and
- 14:46Speaker 1: the New York Mets, who, of course just gave one
- 14:48Speaker 1: away yesterday to give the Red Sox their nine game
- 14:52Speaker 1: road winning streak. This team, now, let's look at those
- 14:55Speaker 1: wild card standings again. This team, the Boston Red Sox,
- 14:58Speaker 1: the team that fired its manager, has had all kinds
- 15:01Speaker 1: of injuries, still without Crochet, still without Roman, Anthony and others.
- 15:08Speaker 1: This team is a half game out in the wildcard race.
- 15:10Speaker 1: It's incredible. And here we go going into the deadline.
- 15:13Speaker 1: What will the Red Sox do. I don't think they're
- 15:15Speaker 1: selling as of right now. No chance they've got a chance.
- 15:18Speaker 1: And they've got a president of base Operations, I'm sorry,
- 15:21Speaker 1: chief baseball officer, who has been under scrutiny. He's not
- 15:24Speaker 1: going to want to concede. So in the American League,
- 15:27Speaker 1: I want to go through some of the other teams. Now,
- 15:29Speaker 1: we've got quite an interesting scenario. We've got Seattle in Minnesota,
- 15:32Speaker 1: you see it right there, tied for the third wildcard spot,
- 15:35Speaker 1: one game under five hundred, one game under. You've got
- 15:39Speaker 1: Minnesota doing this after ripping their team apart at last
- 15:43Speaker 1: year's deadline. You've got the Astros. They're four under five hundred,
- 15:47Speaker 1: one and a half out in the wildcard. And this
- 15:49Speaker 1: in a season in which at one point they had
- 15:51Speaker 1: sixteen players on the injured list, including Hunter Brown and
- 15:55Speaker 1: Josh Hater. This is a team that is twenty eighth
- 15:58Speaker 1: in baseball in rotation eer, a team with one of
- 16:01Speaker 1: the least productive outfields in baseball. But here they are
- 16:04Speaker 1: right in the thick of the race. Behind them, the
- 16:06Speaker 1: Baltimore Orioles, a team that has disappointed, frustrated, and exasperated
- 16:11Speaker 1: its fans the entire season, and yesterday they suffered a
- 16:16Speaker 1: tough loss, not in the game. They finished the sweep
- 16:18Speaker 1: of the Royals, completed their first four game winning streak
- 16:21Speaker 1: of the season, but lost Blaize Alexander, who's been a
- 16:24Speaker 1: revelation for them with a broken hand. But here are
- 16:27Speaker 1: the Orioles. They had that dismal first half. They're right there.
- 16:30Speaker 1: The Toronto Blue Jays, they've had a dismal first half.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Injuries galore as well, six under five hundred, only two
- 16:38Speaker 1: and a half back in the wild card race. Vlad
- 16:40Speaker 1: their big star, the guy who dominated October. This dude's
- 16:44Speaker 1: got six home runs on the season, none at home.
- 16:48Speaker 1: And yet the Blue Jays are right in the middle
- 16:50Speaker 1: of this. So you look at all this, Detroit three
- 16:53Speaker 1: and a half back right behind them. The A's have
- 16:55Speaker 1: fallen off because they've had a nine game losing streak.
- 16:59Speaker 1: You look at all this, and you know the American
- 17:01Speaker 1: League is going to be jumbled. I don't know that
- 17:03Speaker 1: we're gonna get more definition in the next couple of weeks,
- 17:06Speaker 1: so we'll see what happens. You might see a lot
- 17:08Speaker 1: of Major League from Major league trades. But the big
- 17:10Speaker 1: question is going to be schooble, and right now we
- 17:14Speaker 1: don't have an answer. Now, the National League it's better,
- 17:18Speaker 1: but in terms of definition of the race or definitions
- 17:21Speaker 1: of how this is all playing out, not much better.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Let's look at their wild card standings, because it's really
- 17:26Speaker 1: close there too. Now the teams are performing better, playing
- 17:30Speaker 1: better in each case. But in the National League you
- 17:33Speaker 1: see right there, the Miami Marlins currently hold a third spot,
- 17:36Speaker 1: even after getting swept over the weekend by the Guardians.
- 17:39Speaker 1: They had played so well before that. The Marlins had
- 17:42Speaker 1: then the Cardinals one game back. In a rebuilding year,
- 17:46Speaker 1: they're five over five hundred. In the American League, they'd
- 17:48Speaker 1: be dominating right Pittsburgh three over great offense, hard bullpen.
- 17:53Speaker 1: They took a step to improve both over the weekend
- 17:56Speaker 1: with their trade of the thirty fourth pick the Arizona Diamondbacks.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Here's the team, one injury after another. They're stars Perdomo,
- 18:05Speaker 1: Carol and Marte. For a good part of the season,
- 18:07Speaker 1: we're playing below expectations. Carol all star is certainly back now,
- 18:11Speaker 1: Marte two has played really well of late. Perdomo is
- 18:14Speaker 1: still not really there. They're in the middle of this
- 18:17Speaker 1: thing and they basically have declared themselves. Their general manager,
- 18:21Speaker 1: Mike Haysen, has declared them as buyers. So we'll see
- 18:24Speaker 1: a week ago you might not have thought that, but
- 18:26Speaker 1: they've played a little bit better of late, and than
- 18:28Speaker 1: San Diego three and a half back, only three and
- 18:31Speaker 1: a half back with the worst offensive, baseball and rotation
- 18:36Speaker 1: issues that probably will be too difficult to overcome. So
- 18:41Speaker 1: is aj Preller going to do his usual thing? And
- 18:44Speaker 1: by like crazy, it would seem this would not be
- 18:47Speaker 1: the year to do that, but we're going to find out.
- 18:50Speaker 1: So the deadline looms, and again it's about, oh, it's
- 18:55Speaker 1: three weeks away at this point, and once play resumes,
- 18:59Speaker 1: it's going to be tun a half weeks away. We're
- 19:01Speaker 1: going to see, essentially in these final two and a
- 19:05Speaker 1: half weeks leading to the deadline, the equivalent of a
- 19:09Speaker 1: Pennant race, because teams will be deciding who they are,
- 19:12Speaker 1: trying to figure out who they are. They've spent a
- 19:15Speaker 1: good part of the season doing that, but we still
- 19:18Speaker 1: don't have for certain a knowledge of who the Detroit
- 19:22Speaker 1: Tigers are, of who the Boston Red Sox are, some
- 19:25Speaker 1: of these other teams as well, So it's going to
- 19:27Speaker 1: be quite interesting to see how this all plays out.
- 19:31Speaker 1: And right at the end August first, August, second, August third,
- 19:35Speaker 1: to me is when all the action will get going.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Remember last year on deadline day, thirty five trades on
- 19:44Speaker 1: deadline day. It was a record for deadline day. And
- 19:47Speaker 1: part of it is because of what we've been talking
- 19:50Speaker 1: about here, this group of teams that just can't decide
- 19:55Speaker 1: who they are and then ultimately has to make a
- 19:57Speaker 1: call by sell both, whatever you want to call it.
- 20:00Speaker 1: So we're gonna have an interesting deadline. I don't know
- 20:03Speaker 1: if it's gonna be as active as last year when
- 20:05Speaker 1: a bunch of relievers went late. There were some really
- 20:08Speaker 1: good relievers available, and in this particular case, if the
- 20:12Speaker 1: Tigers don't sell, they have to wonder who the biggest
- 20:15Speaker 1: star traded will be. The Mets are gonna unload their guys.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Of course some of these other sellers will as well,
- 20:21Speaker 1: but it might not be the kind of market that
- 20:25Speaker 1: is conducive to a really active deadline. That's said, I'm
- 20:28Speaker 1: gonna conclude with this, and I say it every year.
- 20:32Speaker 1: The gms can't help themselves. They're trying to win. They
- 20:36Speaker 1: want to do the best for their team, and they
- 20:39Speaker 1: know if they do nothing ones that are in contention,
- 20:42Speaker 1: they're gonna have to answer to their clubhouse and they're
- 20:44Speaker 1: gonna have to answer to the media. So while many
- 20:46Speaker 1: gms think, you know what, the deadline is not as
- 20:50Speaker 1: impactful as you guys in the media and bake it
- 20:52Speaker 1: out to be, there's pressure here and we're gonna see
- 20:55Speaker 1: that pressure mount leading to August third, we'll be right
- 20:58Speaker 1: back with Grill and Ken.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Big second half of the season coming up.
- 21:02Speaker 3: There might be a hot ticket, a rivalry series, a

- 22:31Speaker 1: Time now for Grill and Ken, the part of the
- 22:32Speaker 1: show where I answer your questions. Let's get right to them.
- 22:36Speaker 1: First question comes from Armand's amazing Ken. Who wins the
- 22:39Speaker 1: All Star Game MVP? All right, Armand, I'm gonna give
- 22:43Speaker 1: you one from each league just to cover my bases.
- 22:46Speaker 1: American League Junior Caminero. Now, we had dinner last night
- 22:50Speaker 1: the Fox Group, and David Ortiz said some cool things
- 22:54Speaker 1: about Camonero, actually surprising things. And I want you to
- 22:59Speaker 1: turn into the pregame show today, the All Star Show
- 23:01Speaker 1: on Monday. We have a show on FS one today
- 23:03Speaker 1: and then the game tomorrow, the pregame show, and you'll
- 23:06Speaker 1: hear what Ortiz has to say about camon Aro. Let's
- 23:09Speaker 1: put it this way. He's pretty high on the guy.
- 23:11Speaker 1: The other choice in the National League, Well, it's gonna
- 23:14Speaker 1: be one of the Phillies in my opinion, and we
- 23:17Speaker 1: know we've seen it his whole career. Bryce Harper has
- 23:20Speaker 1: a way of rising to the occasion and it would
- 23:22Speaker 1: be completely fitting if he won the MVP. And if
- 23:26Speaker 1: he doesn't do it, it might be schwarb We're knocking
- 23:29Speaker 1: down a building somewhere with the whole run. So I'll
- 23:31Speaker 1: go with one of the Phillies, and I'll go with
- 23:33Speaker 1: camon Aro in the al All right, next question. This
- 23:37Speaker 1: one comes from William Joyner, who asked, this year's market
- 23:41Speaker 1: is a seller's market. Yes, that's a declaration, declaritive statement
- 23:45Speaker 1: by William, and it actually is an accurate statement. The
- 23:49Speaker 1: sellers will be able to name their price in many cases.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Now the question is what do the sellers have to offer,
- 23:57Speaker 1: even the New York Mets. Let's start with the New
- 23:59Speaker 1: York Mets. Now, they may sell, and Joel Sherman of
- 24:02Speaker 1: the New York Post and John Hayman, both of the
- 24:05Speaker 1: last two days, said they should sell their good relievers too,
- 24:08Speaker 1: the guys who are under control, Brazabon and Luke Weaver.
- 24:12Speaker 1: I would not be surprised if the Mets did that.
- 24:13Speaker 1: They probably should do that. Those guys would get you something.
- 24:17Speaker 1: There are other left handed relievers Brooks Railey and Luke
- 24:20Speaker 1: I'm sorry, and aj Minter. Those two guys still bring
- 24:23Speaker 1: you something to their rentals. Peralta, he struggled Clay Holmes.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Should they sign him to an extension or should they
- 24:30Speaker 1: trade him and then maybe try to sign him back.
- 24:33Speaker 1: The Mets can do some things, but the players that
- 24:35Speaker 1: they have, with the exception of Weaver are not performing
- 24:40Speaker 1: at an extremely high level. I guess you could say
- 24:42Speaker 1: brazabon Is and the two lefty relievers are good, but
- 24:45Speaker 1: they're rental believers. It's only so high a price, So
- 24:48Speaker 1: while it will be a seller's market, I don't know
- 24:51Speaker 1: that the Mets are gonna crush it in the sense
- 24:54Speaker 1: that the Tigers might if they trade Schooble. They're gonna
- 24:57Speaker 1: do well for Schooble, even though he's a rental, even
- 24:59Speaker 1: though he'll be owed only well almost ten million at
- 25:02Speaker 1: the deadline. He's Trek scouble. If you have Freddy Perault
- 25:06Speaker 1: to pitching better, you'd have a better argument. All right.
- 25:09Speaker 1: One more question. This one comes from Chris Murphy, who
- 25:14Speaker 1: asked the Dodgers should trade Tao Roki and Shean for
- 25:17Speaker 1: starting pitching. I don't know that they want to do that,
- 25:22Speaker 1: and they could end up in the market for a
- 25:24Speaker 1: starter depending on how glass Now and Snell are coming along.
- 25:28Speaker 1: And you can certainly make the case that they have
- 25:30Speaker 1: enough to go get Terrek Scruble. Think about it. Think
- 25:34Speaker 1: about a package of san to start with one of
- 25:37Speaker 1: their young outfield prospects. These guys are there's like five
- 25:41Speaker 1: top hundred guys and maybe one other piece for rental.
- 25:44Speaker 1: That would be tempting, I would say, but they're not
- 25:48Speaker 1: trading Tao for that, and then it's certainly not giving
- 25:50Speaker 1: up on Sasaki so quickly. So the Dodgers will do
- 25:53Speaker 1: things they don't want to do, things they hate paying
- 25:56Speaker 1: the high prices at the deadline, but they often do
- 25:59Speaker 1: so we'll see. Yeah, this all plays out. The School
- 26:01Speaker 1: of Watch is officially on, and we'll see how that
- 26:04Speaker 1: goes over the next couple of weeks. All right, I
- 26:07Speaker 1: want to thank everyone for watching, for listing Foul Territory
- 26:10Speaker 1: coming up at one eastern. They're live from the Iron
- 26:12Speaker 1: Hills Brewery in Philadelphia. That's gonna be cool. Aja Eric
- 26:15Speaker 1: and Scott Braun with live reports from Trisha Whittaker and
- 26:18Speaker 1: Alana Rizzo at All Star Media Day. Confirmed player guests
- 26:22Speaker 1: include Max Munsey and Chris Sale. We'll be back Thursday
- 26:26Speaker 1: wrapping all the festivities, and we'll be back at twelve
- 26:30Speaker 1: thirty Eastern. Enjoy the week, everyone, have fun, enjoy the
- 26:33Speaker 1: game and the dirty
