- 0:00Let me ask you this. How do you know when it's time to get out
- 0:03and go home? Now, from my college days back in the day, I observed
- 0:07that it was time to go home when the bartender yelled, last call!
- 0:12Because we know that shortly after last call would be closing
- 0:16time, and you wanted to be out the door and well on the way home
- 0:20before closing time arrived. Why? Because that's when
- 0:24the bright lights would come on. There'd be some obnoxious song
- 0:28to drive you out. And that's when you realize as you're squeezing
- 0:31towards the exit, you're surrounded by people who can't believe the party's
- 0:36over, who don't realize how drunk they are, and they think
- 0:40that right now might be a good time to start a fight
- 0:44or start a romance. That can't end well for a college student.
- 0:48It also can't end well for a nation.
- 0:53You guessed it, I'm still talking about France. France has
- 0:57been at the bar doing shots and dancing on the pool
- 1:01table since 1789. Right now
- 1:04it's last call. Closing time is gonna hit hard,
- 1:08and France needs to admit that she's drunk,
- 1:12she's broke, and right now nobody thinks she's pretty.
- 1:16It's time to sober up and come to Jesus.
- 1:20It's time to come back to to Christ,
- 1:24and it's gonna hurt, but it's your only shot. Stay with
- 1:28me, I got a story to tell. Hi, I'm Jesuit Father Robert McTaggart, your host
- 1:31every day at The Catholic Current, coming to you from the Station of the Cross
- 1:35Catholic Media Network. Let's take a closer look.
- 1:37Glad you're here. 1789, the French Revolution was the
- 1:42mother of all no kings rallies. It was soaked in blood,
- 1:46and a lot of ink was spilled too. A lot of ideas were bandied about.
- 1:50But a lot of people said, you know, it'd be really great if we organize
- 1:54public and private life without Christ. We're all going to live happily ever
- 1:58after. Well, some people figured out even while it was taking
- 2:02place that this was a bad idea. My fellow
- 2:05Irishman Edmund Burke wrote this regarding
- 2:08the French Revolution. He says, the age of chivalry is gone.
- 2:13That of sophisters, economists, and calculators has
- 2:16succeeded and the glory of Europe is extinguished
- 2:21forever. Now that's dark even by, uh,
- 2:25this dark Irishman's standards, but it wasn't just the
- 2:28Irish, it was the Scots as well. Uh, historian Thomas
- 2:32Carlyle saw the disaster coming too because
- 2:37people didn't see the danger they were in,
- 2:40number one, for rejecting Christ, And number 2, for listening
- 2:44to clowns like Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who's considered
- 2:48the intellectual architect of the French Revolution.
- 2:51Carlyle wrote this: There was once a man called
- 2:55Rousseau who wrote a book containing nothing but ideas.
- 2:59The second edition was bound in the skins of those who
- 3:03laughed at the first. Ouch,
- 3:07that hit hard. People ignored the warning signs, thought they could safely
- 3:11reject Christ. And lots of people paid in blood.
- 3:15Now, the immediate aftermath of the French Revolution,
- 3:19even when the guillotines were put away for a while, that ultimate
- 3:24No Kings rally, in less than 100 years, they had 2 kings
- 3:28and 3 emperors. But one of the things everybody seemed to
- 3:31agree on was there was no reason to return to Christ.
- 3:35We need to leave him out of at least the public picture. Well,
- 3:39Cardinal Pie, who was very much admired by Pope Leo XIII,
- 3:43confronted Emperor Napoleon III. Napoleon III
- 3:47had claimed that it wasn't time for Christ to reign. And His Eminence said
- 3:51this. He said, the time has not come for Jesus Christ
- 3:55to reign? Well then, the time has not come for
- 3:59governments to last. Pow. There it is.
- 4:03He said it out loud. France cannot last as
- 4:07France in any meaningful sense unless
- 4:11and until she comes back to Christ.
- 4:15This illusion of secularism where everybody
- 4:20can get along, that's not even a house of cards. That's an insult
- 4:25to houses of cards. You know who knew this?
- 4:28The bishops of France in 1925.
- 4:32The Assembly of Cardinals and Archbishop of France denounced
- 4:36the Republic's commitment to secularism, and they denounced it as
- 4:40a total disregard of our Lord Jesus
- 4:44Christ. That was in March of 1925.
- 4:48Several months later, Pope Pius XI,
- 4:51in declaring the Solemnity of Christ the King, said this
- 4:55was the opportunity to come
- 4:59back to sanity and to find true peace. And he spoke of the peace
- 5:03of Christ in the kingdom of Christ.
- 5:08Christ is King first by his divinity.
- 5:12He's the eternal Word of the Father, through him, through whom all
- 5:16things were made. All meaning, value,
- 5:19and truth, all beauty and goodness found in creation originates
- 5:25in Christ, points to Christ, who is the meaning and
- 5:29measure and authority of what is true and good
- 5:33and beautiful in creation. And he's also
- 5:36King of all creation by conquest.
- 5:40When we sinned, we rejected the authority of
- 5:44God Almighty and handed it over to God's enemy,
- 5:47Satan. And Christ won back creation
- 5:52on Calvary. St. Augustine said,
- 5:55peace is not the absence of conflict. It is the tranquility
- 5:59of order. It is the office of the wise man,
- 6:03Aquinas said, to order things to their proper ends.
- 6:07And that only happens in unity with Christ
- 6:11the King, not only in our hearts, but in our communities
- 6:15and even in the lives of nations. This is
- 6:18what the Church has always taught. This is what France
- 6:23has rejected since 1789.
- 6:27France, you're broke demographically.
- 6:31Time is not on your side. This is last
- 6:35call. Closing time is going to hit very hard
- 6:39unless and until you renounce the revolution.
- 6:44And come back to Christ the King.
- 6:48I don't know how many of my listeners are French. Maybe you can pass that
- 6:50on to your French family and friends. Meanwhile,
- 6:54Americans who are going to be voting soon, they might have a
- 6:58few things to consider as well. Meanwhile, everyone, please think on
- 7:01these things today. Take them to prayer and talk about it with those you love.
- 7:05Go in peace, and please do pray for me, for I
- 7:09am a sinner.
