- 0:00Hey, beautiful friends, and welcome back to the She Speaks
- 0:02Live podcast. Here we are with another episode
- 0:06of the Fuel Your Life series. And I am so thankful you are
- 0:10here because today we're talking about something every believer
- 0:14wrestles with, how to think differently in a world that's
- 0:19constantly trying to shape our thought life.
- 0:23And if you've ever asked how do I keep my mind fixed on truth
- 0:27when everything around me screams otherwise, then today's
- 0:31episode is for you. We are going to camp out on this
- 0:35verse Romans 12/2 and it says do not conform to the pattern of
- 0:40this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
- 0:47Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is,
- 0:52His good, pleasing, and perfect will.
- 0:56This verse is the heartbeat of spiritual growth.
- 1:00It's not just about information, but it's about transformation, A
- 1:05continual renewing of our thoughts until they mirror
- 1:09Christ. So take a deep breath with me.
- 1:13Let's invite the Holy Spirit to meet us right here and begin
- 1:17that renewal even as we listen today.
- 1:21So most of you know now as you've been listening that I do
- 1:25like to apply some Greek roots or definitions to provide more
- 1:30color on some important points in a Scripture verse.
- 1:33So I want us to begin by breaking down this verse and how
- 1:37it really resonates in our lives.
- 1:39So let's start with the word conform.
- 1:42It's siskamatizo, and this means to pattern yourself after
- 1:47something to take on its outward or external form.
- 1:53It carries the idea of the constant changes we can make
- 1:57according to the fashion of the time.
- 2:00It's the same root as schematic. A schematic provides a plan or a
- 2:06blueprint. So Paul, who wrote Romans, is
- 2:10basically saying, hey, don't let the world hand you its blueprint
- 2:15or plan for living because the world has a plan for you.
- 2:19And it's a pattern of this comparison and self promotion
- 2:24and performance. It's always changing to take on
- 2:27the shape of what the world says is in.
- 2:31I mean, we could see that when we decorate our home.
- 2:33Have you ever decorated and, and within a small amount of years,
- 2:38the wall color is outdated and nothing seems to be in style
- 2:42anymore. Because the world is always
- 2:45changing. And if we depend or follow what
- 2:47the world says, who we are or where we should go, it will
- 2:51definitely lead us on a path of destruction, disillusionment and
- 2:57discouragement. It's a misplaced identity that
- 3:00we can never find in the world. It's basically allowing the
- 3:04things that are not of God to dictate who we are.
- 3:07It whispers be more, have more, post more.
- 3:11There was actually a time in my life where I labeled myself a
- 3:15Christian. But if you were to be my shadow
- 3:18for the day, you really wouldn't be able to tell.
- 3:23I didn't read my Bible. I went to church seldomly and
- 3:26basically lived a life dictated by selfly desired.
- 3:30I was always Moody because I was letting the circumstances
- 3:35dictate my emotions or how I should feel that day.
- 3:39But even though I believed in Jesus, I wasn't presenting all
- 3:44myself to Him. I wasn't fully committed to Him.
- 3:48I was allowing myself to conform to what the world says, who I
- 3:53was and what I did. It was this dead end type of
- 3:58living really that was take me to nowhere Ville and it only
- 4:02left me unsatisfied, lost and empty.
- 4:07It's actually why the first generation of the Israelites
- 4:11never got to reach the Promised Land, because they kept
- 4:14conforming to the world by worshipping idols, complaining,
- 4:19and doing detestable acts of sin against God.
- 4:22Conformity is a silent thief. It robs us of the uniqueness God
- 4:29knitted into our design. It robs us from walking in God's
- 4:34plan. It robs us of knowing our
- 4:36purpose and identity. And we know that the enemy comes
- 4:41to steal, kill and destroy. So anything that we allow
- 4:45externally to shape us or use as a identity is not of God's will,
- 4:51God's or plan. We are to not look at patterning
- 4:56after the temporal worldly things of this earth, but what's
- 5:00eternal, true and the one who never changes and that is God
- 5:06himself. God gave us his blueprint for
- 5:09our lives. It's all in his word.
- 5:12Which brings us to this next part of this verse where Paul
- 5:16shifts the focus and it says, but be transformed by the
- 5:21renewing of your mind. Transform takes on the Greek
- 5:26word metamorphio gives us the word metamorphosis, which I'm
- 5:31sure you've heard before. It's the process of a
- 5:34Caterpillar becoming a butterfly.
- 5:37The Caterpillar not only transformed internally but
- 5:40externally as well into a butterfly.
- 5:44The transformation that we are reading here is a divine
- 5:48metamorphosis that God offers to us.
- 5:52Our spirit becomes new when we are born again, but our souls,
- 5:58which contains our mind, will and emotions need to be
- 6:01transformed, change entirely daily in this world or by human
- 6:07nature. We often try to fix habits
- 6:10externally, but God starts with eternally with our thinking.
- 6:16That's why renewing the mind is so essential, because when the
- 6:20renewal happens, it follows with our actions.
- 6:24So how do we transform? It's by the renewing of our
- 6:28mind. So let's dive into this word
- 6:31renewing. The word renewing is
- 6:34anachinosis, meaning to make new again, to renovate a complete
- 6:40change for the better. The prefix Anna and anachinosis
- 6:46means up. It's suggesting a change to go
- 6:49up higher or a more complete state.
- 6:53So when old thoughts come like I'll never change, I'm not
- 6:57enough, the situation will never get better, You pause and rise
- 7:02above it and say, Nope, my mind is renewed in Christ Jesus by
- 7:07the word of God, I'm being transformed from the inside out.
- 7:12I'm going up and having thoughts from above.
- 7:15And in fact, Colossians 32 it says set your minds on things
- 7:21that are above, not on things that are on earth.
- 7:25And in Colossians 310 it says put on your new nature and be
- 7:29renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like
- 7:33Him. Another translation is and have
- 7:37put on the new self. You are being renewed in
- 7:40knowledge according to the image of your Creator.
- 7:45We are being renewed by the knowledge of God's Word to be
- 7:48more like Him. This is a continual process and
- 7:54it will require this to be done every day.
- 7:57And it will take discipline. I know for most of us we will
- 8:02shy away when we hear the word discipline.
- 8:05But a renewed mind really is a disciplined mind.
- 8:09It looks upon His word for our lives, and it sets its thoughts
- 8:13on God's ways. A disciplined mind basically
- 8:16says there's no blessing there, so I'm not going that way.
- 8:21A renewed mind gives you access to a transform life.
- 8:25Therefore, a true renewed mind will show up in our lives.
- 8:30For instance, you can read a manual on how to put a bookshelf
- 8:35together, but that bookshelf won't be any good if you don't
- 8:39do what the instruction says. God's word is meant for us to
- 8:44hear it, receive it, in other words, come into agreement with
- 8:48it, and bear fruit, showing who God is in our lives.
- 8:54Just the same, people can quote Scripture, but it doesn't always
- 8:59mean their minds are renewed. Take my life for example.
- 9:03I would hear the word at church when I happened to go, but it
- 9:08didn't mean my mind was renewed during the week or every day.
- 9:13The transformation is evident by the fruit we produce from His
- 9:19Word. A person's behavior is dictated
- 9:22by what they are submitting themselves to.
- 9:25You will see if they are submitting to the Word of God or
- 9:28not through their actions. Or look at our our own actions
- 9:33are are we submitting to the word of God?
- 9:36It will show in our fruit, in our actions in our daily lives.
- 9:42So the renewed mind happens when the words of God start to
- 9:46dictate the way we live. The renewal of the mind will
- 9:50show up basically in the transformation.
- 9:55Ephesians 421 through 24. Paul was saying to the Church of
- 10:00Ephesus, since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the
- 10:04truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and
- 10:10your former way of self which is corrupted by lust and deception.
- 10:15Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.
- 10:21Put on your new nature, created to be like God, truly righteous
- 10:25and holy. So now notice it says, let the
- 10:29Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.
- 10:32Our attitude is that outward expression of what's eternally
- 10:37going on inside us. Our thought life that is renewed
- 10:41will be evident both inward and outwardly.
- 10:45And you may say, well that's great Jamie, but what can I
- 10:47expect out of a transformed life?
- 10:50Well, it's a beautiful promise from God that Paul pens in this
- 10:54latter part of this verse. It says then you will be able to
- 10:58test and approve what God's will is, His good, pleasing and
- 11:03perfect will. Another translation says to
- 11:06discern and do what is the will of God.
- 11:10Transformation unlocks discernment.
- 11:14This is our reward for living out a disciplined, renewed mind.
- 11:19God shows His plan of goodness in our lives.
- 11:23God wants to reveal Himself to us in His perfect plan for us.
- 11:28In fact, Psalm 19 seven says the law of the Lord is perfect,
- 11:33reviving the soul. The testimony of the Lord is
- 11:36sure making wise the simple. When we live a transformed life,
- 11:42we are aligned with Him. He can show us the right way to
- 11:47go, which is wise and simple, not confusing.
- 11:50It's good, pleasing and perfect. I saw this when God led me to
- 11:56leave California for Austin. Logic clearly said stay where
- 12:01it's comfortable. But a renewed mind said trust
- 12:05the one who leads. And what followed was peace and
- 12:10blessings. That was my reward.
- 12:12A confirmation that his will, though uncertain in the natural,
- 12:17was perfect in the spirit. Friend, God's will isn't hidden,
- 12:23it's revealed through relationship.
- 12:26When we renew our minds daily, His whisper becomes
- 12:30recognizable. When your mind is cluttered with
- 12:33fear or comparison, lies and thoughts that are not from God,
- 12:38God's voice feels distant. But as your mind renews, His
- 12:43will becomes clearer. I don't know about you, but I'd
- 12:46rather walk that life of being mindful of Him, acknowledging
- 12:51Him daily so I can know His good plan for my life.
- 12:55Wouldn't you? So let's personalize this verse
- 12:58with me. Here's where the transformation
- 13:01becomes intimate. We take God's word and make it
- 13:04personal. So let's read Romans 12/2.
- 13:07Again, inserting I statements. So let's say I will not conform
- 13:14to the pattern of this world, but I am being transformed by
- 13:19the renewing of my mind. Then I will discern and walk in
- 13:24God's good, pleasing, and perfect will for my life.
- 13:28When you personalize Scripture, it moves from reading the Word
- 13:32to receiving it. You begin to prophecy truth of
- 13:35your thoughts. So remember that each time you
- 13:38personalize Scripture, you're reinforcing God's truth of your
- 13:43mind and breaking any agreement with ungodly worldly thinking.
- 13:48And one of the wonderful parts of the Serenity Journal where
- 13:52you can purchase on my website. This is where we're taking these
- 13:56verses from my websitesjamieelizabeth.com.
- 13:59But the link is in the show notes below.
- 14:02And some of the wonderful ways you can personalize Scripture
- 14:05just like we did here. There's also space to write what
- 14:08you identify as God's character with each verse.
- 14:12So for this verse in Romans 12/2, I see God's character of
- 14:18goodness, only good comes from him.
- 14:21I take this from Psalm 23, six, and it says surely goodness and
- 14:25mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.
- 14:29Another one, God is perfect. He is perfect through and
- 14:33through. Psalm 1830 says As for God, his
- 14:38way is perfect. The word of the Lord is
- 14:41flawless. He Shields all who take refuge
- 14:45in him. I see that he is a God of truth.
- 14:49Numbers 2319 says God is not a man, that he should lie.
- 14:55I see that he's all powerful. Luke 137 says For with God,
- 15:00nothing shall be impossible. I see he's all knowing.
- 15:04Proverbs 15 three says The eyes of the Lord are in every place
- 15:09watching both the evil and the good.
- 15:12And really this is just to name a few.
- 15:15There's so many verses on God's attributes and He has so many to
- 15:21look upon and to just dive in and study it.
- 15:25It's so fun. So let's get practical.
- 15:28Let's practice the renewing of the mind.
- 15:31Let's start by #1 identify the lie.
- 15:37Write down 1 recurring negative thought, something that just
- 15:41keeps cling around and you're just done with it.
- 15:45Ask what pattern of this world is this from and then #2 replace
- 15:51it with truth. This is so helpful.
- 15:54I'll make a list of some things that maybe are attacking me in
- 16:00my thought life. And I just go right to the word
- 16:03and there's always a scripture verse that I can attach a lie
- 16:07to. And so you find that scripture
- 16:10that counters it for, for example, the lie could be I'm
- 16:14unworthy, but the truth says I am chosen, holy, and dearly
- 16:20loved, says Colossians 312 #3. Then repeat it daily.
- 16:25Speak it out loud until your heart believes what your mouth
- 16:29declares. And then #4 guard your inputs.
- 16:34The renewal you cultivate in the word can be undone by the noise
- 16:39you consume. Be intentional about what you
- 16:42watch, scroll, and speak. Don't undo what you speak by
- 16:47consuming the thoughts from the world.
- 16:50So let's close today by declaring truth together.
- 16:54Wherever you are, whether you're driving, walking, or sitting,
- 16:58say these words out loud. It really does firm what you
- 17:04believe. Here we go.
- 17:06I will not conform to the patterns of this world.
- 17:10I am being transformed by the renewing of my mind.
- 17:15My thoughts are aligning with the truth of God's Word.
- 17:19Old mindsets have broken off. Lies have no place or hold in
- 17:25me. The Spirit of God has renovated
- 17:28my heart and mind. I have the mind of Christ.
- 17:33I discern His good, pleasing, and perfect will.
- 17:38I walk in peace, purpose and power for I am being transformed
- 17:43from glory to glory. Glory in Jesus name, Amen.
- 17:48Now take that deep breath and feel a peace of that declaration
- 17:54and remember that renewal isn't A1 and done a one time event.
- 18:00It's a daily process of laying down the flesh and allowing the
- 18:04Holy Spirit to take lead and using that Word of God, the
- 18:08sword of the Spirit that is alive and active.
- 18:13And as you step into your week, keep speaking life, keep
- 18:17personalizing scripture, and watch God transform every
- 18:21thought into victory. Remember that declarations are
- 18:25awesome, but they should always follow by our actions.
- 18:28The more we renew our minds, the more we mature spiritually.
- 18:33And to grow is not just for our own good, but it's to always
- 18:38glorify God and be an example of Jesus, to bring others to know
- 18:43him and to know his perfect plan for them too.
- 18:47So thanks for joining me on She Speaks Life.
