- 1:45more obscure programs. We'll later hear him in Hollywood Mystery Time. He also
- 1:51played The Whisperer, a very late radio drama. In it, he played
- 1:57a lawyer named Philip Gold who law lost his voice and basically went undercover as
- 2:04the Whisperer gets to get involved in this syndicate in order to bring it down,
- 2:08and that definitely sounds like an intriguing concept. Like I said, sounds
- 2:14like a bit of a take off on the Green Hornet. But anyway,
- 2:16he was the second Ellery Queen. He took over the role with the return
- 2:23of the series in January of nineteen forty two, but we'd be gone by
- 2:28the fall of nineteen forty three and give way to Sydney Smith. Today's episode
- 2:35is one of only three that we have left from this era. But speaking
- 2:39of that, let's get into today's episode and we have our first listener mystery
- 2:45panel substitution. The original air date is March twenty seventh of nineteen forty three,
- 2:52and the title is The Adventure of the Circus Train. Romo Salter presents
- 3:01the Adventures of Ellery Queen. Good Night, the makers of Brumo Seltz bring
- 3:16you another thrilling adventure with Ellery Queen, the celebrated gentleman detective in person.
- 3:22Ellery Queen again gives you a chance to metch with with him as he relates
- 3:24another story of a crime heal on unraveled. Then at the point where he
- 3:29was able to solve the mystery, he stops the play gives you a chance
- 3:31to guess the criminal's name. In the studio to night, we have as
- 3:36our guests mister George R. Crowley, Superintendent of the New York, New
- 3:38Haven and Hartford Railroad Police Forts, and mister F. Beverly Kelly, director
- 3:43of radio publicity for the Ringing Brothers and Varnaman Bailey combined shows. Mister Carley
- 3:47and mister Kelly have accepted Ellery Queen's challenge to solve the mystery before the solution
- 3:53is revealed, and now Ellery Queen, Master Detective and your host for the
- 3:58next half hour, Good evening. In tonight's story, we run across one
- 4:01of the boldest and most dastardly murders in our memory, a murder on a
- 4:05speeding train, and among our suspects are included a giant, a midget,
- 4:10and a fortune teller. I call it the Adventure of the Circus Train.
- 4:24I'm sure glad the Chicago case is wrapped up. Inspector Yes, it'll be
- 4:29good to get back to me. Hellry got a ticket? Just dad ever

- 5:05us Not quite mess. Your accommodations would be in the end car. It's
- 5:11an all compartment car with a small lounge and bar at the rear. Mister
- 5:15Marco himself travels in that car and his business manager, John Brady. Oh,
- 5:18we certainly don't object a traveling and mister Marco, mister Brady, station
- 5:21master, but they're not the only ones in that car, sircom I got
- 5:25to double up with a talking snake, I'll walk to them. Who are
- 5:28the others? Well, there's Goliath, he's eight foot tall, Goliath,
- 5:31the circus giant. Yes, miss. Then there's Captain Pinkey, he's a
- 5:35midget. Madame Zara, she's the circus fortune teller. Tur nice folks.
- 5:40Been with Marco's circus a long time. But I thought i'll tell you ever
- 5:44since I was a kid over at the end to travel with a circus.
- 5:46What do you saying? We don't mind one bet station master. Okay,
- 5:49mister queen, I'll fix it hard to be an interesting trip. Why this
- 6:01is solid? Com My, this lounge back? He is off becausey Allery,
- 6:04Yes, we should be putting hot soon, Nicky Macael, I hope
- 6:06we're not putting you out in any way. Carry expect normal conditions in our
- 6:11time, Inspector Edward. Edward shut him up, having a little celebration.
- 6:16Folks. On that case, maybe we ought to get out of the lounge
- 6:19and go to our compartments. Mister Martin. Yes, we don't want to
- 6:21spoil any plans you have. No, I won't hear of it. They
- 6:25might have proud if you don't join me. In fact, Oh, John,
- 6:29yes, did you tell him all about it. Well, I left
- 6:32the telling to you, Mark. Folks meet John Brady'm a business manager and
- 6:39this is long Joe Stebbens, professionally known as mister Golife, Madam, the
- 6:45smartest crystal gazer under the big top. How do you do? And Captain
- 6:49Pinky forty four years old and you can put him in your best package.
- 6:54Any friend of Mink Marchles is a friend of mine old past. Thank you.
- 7:04Well, you three must be wondering what this is all about. We
- 7:09are as you know. I've been in show business over fifty years. Well,
- 7:14Mark, Marco's getting to older on a circuit. Know I know,
- 7:19but I am need younger blood. So I've just showed Marco's Mamma showed to
- 7:24John Brady. Here, John, here's the billishill all work sign here than
- 7:30delivering? Well, thanks Mark, And here's my advanced payment in cash thirty
- 7:34thousand dollars. Why penty Goliath, you look at that three ten thousand dollars
- 7:41bills. I never seen so much money, Captain Pinky. Money means trouble.
- 7:46I smell trouble. I smell in Indiana farm and rest from my old
- 7:51bones are where pops drink cop mis Marco, thank you one minute at midnight,
- 7:58we're leaving on the dot. How about for mister Marca, Well,
- 8:01he's a john. He's gotten pretty late. Rational. I was about we
- 8:33get the hazy wastes. I suppose we may as well. Sergeants, it's
- 8:35brothering you. Where do you want to come? Out? Here? On
- 8:37the pun platform the gun clim I had that. It was an atmosphere and
- 8:41the lounge. I didn't like. You mean them expressions of gimme, gimme
- 8:45on the faces of the giant, the midget and Madam's arm. Oh,
- 8:48that's only nature. These circus people don't see ten thousand dollar bills every day,
- 8:52not only circus people. What's the matter of the water. I was
- 8:56just cleaning up my bar. Allows. Yes, good, Bill's signal from
- 9:01mister Michael's compartments out of your mouth. A rang his bells. There's no
- 9:05answer. I tried the door. It was unlocked. I opened the door.
- 9:11I saw saw the man said that let's go see for us. Olf.
- 9:16Come Marco's compartment. Dad, look Michael. His head dashed in right
- 9:26there and there, ladies and gentlemen, you have the beginning of our story.
- 9:41We'll be back in just a moment to tell you more. But first,
- 9:45Ernest Chappel with a mystery of his own, and it ben's fair to
- 9:48be his baffling is any mystery. But he's been up again. By the
- 9:50way, folks, what's your batting average? Missus Neelie Jarvey of Lakewood,
- 9:54Ohio is frank to admit that she and her family haven't piled up a very
- 9:58imposing score of correct deductans, but she says they still get a big kick
- 10:01out of trying to decide who done it good for you? Missus Jarviy,
- 10:05that's what we like to hear. And here's something else we like to hear.
- 10:09But suppose I let you folks have it. Of Missus Jarvie's own words,
- 10:13she right, we are never without Bromo Seltzer in our homes. Not
- 10:16long ago, when I became a volunteer nurse at our local hospital, I
- 10:20had just one more reason to be grateful for Bromo Selser's quick, effective relief.
- 10:26After my first evening of routine floor work, I came home with my
- 10:31nerves on edge and a bad headache brought on by nevius excitement. Well as
- 10:35soon as I got in the house, I took a Bromo Seltzer, and
- 10:39oh what relief. I'm not so nervous and excited about my volunteer work as
- 10:43I was at first. But I know that I can rely on Bromo Seltzer
- 10:48whenever I have a common sick headache like that. Again, Well, now
- 10:50there you have a mighty fine piece of advice from a lady who ought to
- 10:54know. So the next time you have a common sick headache, try Bromo
- 10:58Seltzer. I bet you'll feel the same as missus Jarvi about it, and
- 11:01say, we'd like to hear from all of you about your Promo Celzer experiences.
- 11:05Just send your letters to Ellerie Queen care of the station to which you
- 11:09are listening. And now back to our story. It's a short time after
- 11:20the discovery of all mister Marco's body. The car has been locked front and
- 11:24rear. Nikki has been awakened. But I inspect you how it happen.
- 11:31That's what we've got to figure out. Nikki, Elleryville and I were standing
- 11:33on the front platform from the time the party in the round here broke up.
- 11:37We know no one from the forward guys come into our car. I
- 11:41left, and the two conductors were sitting at the end of the lounge near
- 11:43the rear platform, Nikki, checking their tickets, and both conductors say no
- 11:46one got into the car through the back. So mister Marco must have been
- 11:50murdered by someone in this car. That's the size of it, Nikki.
- 11:54But who which one? The two conductors allied by each other, and they
- 11:58both alive by the porter, So the killer be one of the four circus
- 12:01people, that nice old man. Why and you remember Brady handing Marco three
- 12:07ten thousand dollar bills in front of her eyes, Nikki. They're not in
- 12:09his wallet now or anywhere in Marco's compartment. He was bumped off for that
- 12:13thirty grand Miss pig kill. It probably wrapped on Marco's door. Marcao led
- 12:16him in visitors saulid the old man stole the money and left Marco for dead,
- 12:20but he didn't die right off. Managed to reach the porter's bell and
- 12:24ring it before dying. What was the weapon? A man's shoe? What?
- 12:28Yes, the shoe A shoe big enough to ship freight in miss Porter,
- 12:31A man's shoe size twenty two. Little nice twenty two got to shoe
- 12:37that side. It must be the giant. The glass must have killed mister
- 12:41Marko and used his own shoe, miss porter and the top it off,
- 12:45left it in Marco's room for us to find no killer would be so simple
- 12:48minded, Nikki. The big boys being framed. Only question is by who.
- 12:52Then we better start asking questions. Yes, did he Yeah, called
- 12:56him out of their compartments one at a time while were attacking each one new
- 13:00touches, compopping for that door that's on this case of inch. Marca was
- 13:05killed for the thirty grand. So when we find the cash, we find
- 13:09the killer. Oh, mister Glyn, sorry, it's hard not to wake
- 13:24it. What time is the precriming? He said, to keep you're working
- 13:31on one shoe, then you've got on only one shoe, mister gly Oh,
- 13:35dying to find no inspector. When I went to bed, I put
- 13:37my shoes and that little doo jigger on the floor of the compartment. I
- 13:41know, I know, so the closet. You know that the porter can
- 13:45open from outside, and they got your shoes and shot him during the night.
- 13:50Where's him? Just now, mister Bealley comes fetching me and I look
- 13:56for my shoes, and that shoes ain't going to somebody, ain't still one
- 14:00of my shoes? What am I gonna do? It's the only pair of
- 14:03God we hit Pittsburgh in the morning, mister Clive, so we'll send out
- 14:07prepare of shoes for you then, humm, and a shoe store in Pittsburgh
- 14:11or anywhere's else carries size twenty two. Oh, inspector, what do you
- 14:18want me for? In the marker's room glass? And I'll show you sure
- 14:24I can't look stay on the card of a well, where's mister Marco,
- 14:28inspector? What's ends that piece of newspaper? Yes, your shoe, mister
- 14:35cly Well, I'll be what's blood doing all over it? What's under that
- 14:43blanket? Mister Marco? It was murdered tonight with your shoe murder? What
- 14:54happened in the anyway? Revived this eight footeen man right there? And they
- 14:58can't call John Brady in there. Here's mister Brady ellery as he's hoppling too.
- 15:13Somebody stole one of my shoes from your shoe and popping mister Brady.
- 15:16That's right. I found two shoes in it, all right, but one
- 15:20of them is a woman's here. Look and what's going on? Mark you
- 15:24the moment, mister Brady, nicky is this woman's shoe? Mister Brady just
- 15:26found a shoe receptacle? Yars? No secret must be madam nick You better
- 15:31go fetch the zar woman. All right? Suppose you go in now,
- 15:33mister Brady and see mister Marco. I don't get all their sight. Marcam
- 15:39put the blanket back ellery right, dad? But who why thirty dollars you
- 15:45handed market? And I'm mister Brady. That's why Adams do is hopping mad
- 15:50about her shoe? And I mean hopping. I don't care for jokes.
- 15:52If you please, mister Brady, is this your shoe? I just founded
- 15:56my shoe compartment and one of mine is gone. Let me see. Yes,
- 16:00uh that's my shoe. Here's yours? Thank you? What was I
- 16:03awaken in the middle of the night? Has anything happened to mister Markham?
- 16:11Why do you ask that? Madam's arn? Yes? Of course, mister
- 16:17Marco is lying under that blanket. He's dead, Yes, Madam's a look.
- 16:29I should have warned him. You knew Marco was going to be knocked
- 16:32off before retiring. I looked into my crystal ball. It never lies.
- 16:38I saw an old man lying there dead. Now I realized it was mister
- 16:45Marco, an old man with blood done's head. Oh mind, as she
- 16:51always talks like this. You saw this in your crystal ball, you say,
- 16:56with blood on his head? Did you all also see Marco's murderer and
- 17:00you a magic ball? Madam's aarn No, but I could really if the
- 17:07conditions were right. Yes, mister cut that out. Seen murderers in a
- 17:11hunter of grass? There, go back to your room, you tell mister
- 17:15Brady very well in rist bar, where's really find the name of Podliously back
- 17:21with a thirty grand haven't you forgotten? Someone inspected? Poonick Captain Pinky the
- 17:26mid Oh the Mitic couldn't have done it. He's too tiny. He could
- 17:27have stood on something bad, and that big, heavy shoe would be a
- 17:30murderous weapon, even in the hands of a child. What's all the excited
- 17:33about, is Captain Pinky? Hello? What the devil's going on? Why
- 17:38is everybody rushing around like crazy? It's an unusual trip, Captain Pinky.
- 17:42By the way, anybody's wipe your shoes? My shoes? Heck no,
- 17:47what would anybody want with my shoes. Good blasted all. What's happened?
- 17:52Mister Marco has been murdered. Captain, mister Marco murder murder Dear, he's
- 18:00crying, it's Gane's crystal bar. Billy, Well, let's you find the
- 18:06money. I didn't find it, Inspector, you did. I searched every
- 18:10compartment. No, don't. Could you find your head? Where are we
- 18:14now? A half hour out of Fort Wayne, Indiana at the next stip
- 18:17Why have Pittsburg to have some detectives waiting for us when we pull in tomorrow
- 18:19morning and give this kind everybody into the vacuum cleaning, Billy, even if
- 18:23the Pittsburgh boys have to go to New York with us. Very well,
- 18:26sir, this bar all right, show you how to serve this case.
- 18:30Hellary, find that money and you've got Marco's murder hill Jelse and keeping Billie
- 18:48and those Pittsburgh men they were searching after ten hours. But it must be
- 18:52in this kind that I got it with the money is said, No,
- 18:56No, I mean the explanation for that shoe accent. Eh Kill wanted a
- 19:00weapon that couldn't be traced to him, so he stole one of Zara's shoes
- 19:03from her receptacle, but realized it was too light as a weapon, So
- 19:07we're right for Brady's shoe recept and then decided he wouldn't use either ones.
- 19:10He'd use Goliath's shoe. That would make a weapon, So he stole Golia's
- 19:14shoe and then putting back mister Brady's. Madame csar, I made a mistake
- 19:17and mixed them up. Oh how much longer do I have to walk a
- 19:22ride on my socks? I want my shoes. We're taking it for finger
- 19:26Prince. Mister Glas, you'll have it back by the time we reached New
- 19:27York. Would you moist the blood off? Cure? Sure? Mister glad
- 19:33Right, I made up my mind. I'm arresting Zara. Why tsar Dad
- 19:37Genio Michael was dead, the only one who did. How could she have
- 19:41known unless she bumped them off? That is a puzzle. How she knew
- 19:45Dad? She claims she might see the criminal in her crystal ball. Why
- 19:48not call her block see whom she accuses. That's an Ideah, okay,
- 19:52we're trying. I have a hunch. Madame Zara has something of her sleeve,
- 19:56and it isn't a crystal ball. Why is that you people can't ever
- 20:11do anything in the light. We consult other worlds. Light is a disturbance.
- 20:15I must have darkness, Conductor twitch the lights up hand the lounge.
- 20:21But that's hot and biddy to have both into the car. Watch you will
- 20:25all join him? Silly Yellow. She knows it's silly to Nikki. So
- 20:29I was trying to tell her something using the sak goes the light. I
- 20:33must have quiet, or my crystal will tell me nothing. Come up here,
- 20:41you who shed Marco's blood? Here in the crystal of truth. It's
- 20:48getting a sat phosphorus. The one who spills the blood of old men,
- 20:56he takes shape. His face comes out of a miss in a moment.
- 21:03Now I see him. I see him much obliged, Adam, who done
- 21:08it? The spiller of blood is mad? Why do you stop? Right?
- 21:17Do you think she's here? The lights? Sarah? She's sitting so
- 21:21still. Come out of that now she's in one of her chances. Oh,
- 21:25I thought you was dead, mister Brady. Gosh, captain, sure
- 21:29did I take up Sarah? Thank goodness? Whose face did you see in
- 21:33that thing? I must not tell you, not yet? And why not
- 21:38yet? The time isn't right right? Perhaps later, Madame Jarry, you're
- 21:47a fast plants, fake fake. I'm not gonna stay around here and be
- 21:52in out of your back to their compartments. So that's that. Oh well,
- 21:57why am I pool the money? Sergeant? Those Pittsburgh guys and me,
- 22:02we've gone over this car three times, No, dog meanie, lock,
- 22:06Inspector, we are those blame compartments practically apart you, sorrow. We
- 22:11searched this lounge, the bar, the porter's pantry, the light fixtures,
- 22:15the radio, the front. Well, do you want me to go on
- 22:18about the people, sergeants? Yeah, I had the toe, clothes,
- 22:21luggage, cigarettes, We even examined Zara's crystal ball, and we searched the
- 22:25two conductors in the porter too. No, dog meanie, you're a crook's
- 22:27idea of Santa Claus. Shut it all over again. I want that thirty
- 22:32thousand dollars before we reached New York. We're in end of the line and
- 22:48we're way to do that zone money can't imagine we're dad. I must see
- 22:53the inspector's own squad waiting on the platform. Now's everybody as yeah, ready,
- 22:57Goliath, thinky madam hocus pocus, that Darrow woman. She isn't here,
- 23:02inspect, but you must know. We're in the train stopped going to
- 23:06get her out here. Okay, inspect, Vicky, don't look dead.
- 23:14Cherry has been bumped off head smashed him with a crystal ball, heady hurd.
- 23:17Everybody who did thought that, Why Madam's don It's clear now. We
- 23:22wondered how Zara knew about Marco's being dead, don't you see? Zara must
- 23:26have spied on the murder in the car the last night. She must have
- 23:30seen the killer go into Marco's room with goliath shoe. And why didn't she
- 23:33tell? Because she had her own ax to grind Nikki. The seance was
- 23:36a veiled threat to the killer. She was warning him she could give him
- 23:38away if she chose, so that he'd spit the thirty grand with her,
- 23:41but instead he spit her head. Oh wait a minute, of course,
- 23:45now I see it all we've been blind and there, ladies and gentlemen,
- 23:56you have the mystery, and I hope a solution as well. Will you
- 23:59be good enough to introduce our guest. I'm chair detectives for this evening?
- 24:03All right, Well, we are in that portion of the program where we
- 24:08turned to our armchair detectives, and since most of the recording of the armchair
- 24:15detectives in the original story did not survive, we have two listeners who will
- 24:23serve as our armchair detectives and offer their thoughts and see if they can solve
- 24:29the case with Ellery Queen. First of all, we have Morgan Blayton from
- 24:37Vancouver, British Columbia, who is a writer and a comedian. And thanks
- 24:45so much for being with us, Morgan, and I would love to hear
- 24:49your solution. Who do you think committed the murder? I think it was
- 24:57the one we suspect least teeny tiny Captain Pinky. Captain Pinky. Any reason
- 25:04why did you think Captain Pinky? Well, there is perhaps I'm projecting because
- 25:11mister Marco said something about he's forty four years old and you can fit him
- 25:15in your pocket, or something to that effect, and so I think he
- 25:18wants to retire with mister Marco. I think he went to his room to
- 25:23ask him and he was turned down, and he realized he was forty four,
- 25:30which for a circus guy is the end of the line. He and
- 25:33he lost it and he murdered mister Marco and then had to frame Madame Hoak's
- 25:40pocus and the other guy, the business manager. All right, well,
- 25:45thanks so much, Morgan, and that's an interesting theory and we'll find out
- 25:49if that's correct. Now we turn to Dave Milman, who is from Los
- 25:57Gatos, California, and she is a high tech marketing executive who also provided
- 26:06us the microphone that we use for our openings and closing on the show.
- 26:12And his father loved old time radio and he actually played Orson Wells in a
- 26:19nineteen seventy to reenactment of the War of the World's play. Dave, you
- 26:26emailed me and you said you had a theory. What's your working theory as
- 26:30to who's it? Oh man, My first theory was that it was also
- 26:34the midget because of the shoes. I figured that he went and grabbed a
- 26:41shoe in anger and then couldn't see back into the shoe bin because he was
- 26:47too short. We couldn't see where to return the shoe, and that's how
- 26:49all the shoes got mixed up. That was my first theory, okay,
- 26:53but never had a motive. So I'm thinking, who's got a motive?
- 26:59To kill the owner, the old o retiring owner. The only guy I
- 27:03could figure who had a motive was Brady, the business manager. But I
- 27:08can't figure out what it was all about and where did the money go.
- 27:12I have no idea where the money went. So I'm thinking still with the
- 27:17break business manager because he had a motive, but I don't know where the
- 27:19money went. And because it was cash, it doesn't make sense to do
- 27:26anything with it. It doesn't make sense to burn a check or something like
- 27:29that. Right if it was a check, they'd burn it or whatever.
- 27:30But it's cash. Anybody's going to hold out a three ten thousand dollars bill.
- 27:34So my first theory evaporated. My second theory is business manager, but
- 27:40I don't know how and why. Okay, well, thanks so much,
- 27:44Dave, and we're going to go ahead and get back into Ellery Queen and
- 27:48see what Ellery's solution is to this whole case. Thank you very much.
- 27:52In the moment you'll learn what the correct solution is. But first, the
- 27:56search for an honest man has come to an end in the person of our
- 27:59own Ernest Chapel. Oh me. What Ellery undottedly means is that I'm not
- 28:03going to make a single claim for Bromo celtz that isn't absolutely true. I'm
- 28:07not going to tell you that it'll do all your errands and finish your housework
- 28:11for you, but I do say there's just nothing better than Bromo Seltzer for
- 28:15common sick headache. You know the kind pounding head pain, jumping nerves,
- 28:18upset stomach. Well, Bromo Seltzer fights headache like that three ways you get
- 28:23effect to relie quickly, feel more like your old self. So I'll be
- 28:27prepared. Keep Bromo Seltzer handy where you work as well as at home.
- 28:41Hide inside. Come on, whys no one gets into Lus's off alren't sadania
- 28:48people? Okay, and spranker. Here's the way this case stacks up.
- 28:52We know the killer wanted the weapon that couldn't be traced to him. What
- 28:56did he pick? Nobody else's shoe mark? Somebody answers you So whatever shoe
- 29:03was, shoes he stole last night belonged to innocent people, not to the
- 29:07murderer. Makes sense to me? Huh, snickky, I want to follow
- 29:08this whose shoes were stolen last night? Madam's eyes? Oh, she's innocent
- 29:14mister Brady's so he's innocent, and finally Golias, so he's innocent. Who's
- 29:19left who could be Togethery Man, only Captain Pinky. Captain Prinky? Where'd
- 29:26you hide that doll? But I didn't tell Micha Marker? Dad? Haven't
- 29:29you left out one possibility? But y Spinity said that the murderer wanted you
- 29:33to think just what you do. Think that the crime was committed by the
- 29:34one person whose shoe was not involved. He deliberately involved all the shoes,
- 29:38that Captain Pinky. He was framing Pinky. I'm afraid so, Dad.
- 29:42The big point of this case is one you made yourself repeatedly that to find
- 29:45the killer we had to find the money he stole. But we didn't find
- 29:49the money sent And why didn't we because it wasn't in the car But it
- 29:52was in the car, Dad, it had to be murray. The car
- 29:55was practically demolished. Everybody and everything in it was searched. That can't be,
- 29:57Dad, that the thirty thousand dollars would have been found. Obviously,
- 30:00then one place was not searched. So that place is where the missing money
- 30:04must be. What place? Where didn't we search? My show. Did
- 30:07you search the weapon, Sergeant, the weapon that killed Marco? Who do
- 30:12you ever think of searching the web? Exactly? That's what the killer figured
- 30:15too, that we wouldn't dream. The hiding place of the money was the
- 30:18very shoe which bashed poor Marco's head in. But Emory, what good is
- 30:22that doing? How could he expect to get hold of the money again?
- 30:26That shoe was a murder weapon held by the police. Therefore, Nikki,
- 30:27the murderer could be only one person, the owner of the shoe, to
- 30:32whom it would eventually be returned. Eventually, that's pretty shoe even before we
- 30:37reached Penn station, and I just gave it to him. Can I take
- 30:41that murder show up? Oh you're wrong? If really you're that shoe lining,
- 30:57Yes, sir, here they are three ten thousand dollars. Bill have
- 31:03a crime golife, because who'd be foolish enough to use his own shoe as
- 31:07a murder weapon and then leave it behind to be found. You knew we'd
- 31:10believe you innocent. You knew we'd therefore return the shoe with a titten money
- 31:14to you. But there's one thing Goliath didn't know. He didn't know he
- 31:17was traveling with Ellery the Giant Killer, and there, ladies and gentlemen,
- 31:30you have the solution to the mystery. I want to thank mister George R.
- 31:33Crawley and mister F. Beverly Kelly for appearing his guest armchair detective this
- 31:37evening. And we have for both mister Crawley and mister Kelly a personal gift
- 31:40from Bromo Seltzer, an autograph copy of my new mystery novel, There was

- 31:52you can't top it next week. I'll take that bet, Chappie, and

- 33:54This program came to you from New York. This is the National Broadcast Company.
- 34:05I hope our substitute Armchair Detectives did well, but I have to say
- 34:10that I found the choice that was originally on there to be a very intriguing
- 34:16one. You have a railroad detective and somebody from Barnum and Bailey. That
- 34:22would have been perfect. So I'm sorry we missed out on the original segment.
- 34:27I hope you like the substitute segment and that it was good. I'm
- 34:30sure it will be, though I'm recording this before we record that panel segment.
- 34:36The other thing I liked about this was the use of organ music.
- 34:39I know some people are never a fan of organ music on a Golden Age
- 34:45radio program. Well, some people love it. I can either take it
- 34:49or leave it. It kind of depends on how it was done. I
- 34:52like the use of the organ to kind of create this riff on the circus
- 34:58theme. Very fitting. All right, Well, onto the Patreon individual rewards.
- 35:05Yesterday we talked about the Rookie, Seamous and Detective Sergeant level. Now
- 35:12we're going to talk about the Master Detective level inspired by Nick Carter, and

- 35:22know everything we help out. So we give you everything that comes with the
- 35:29Detective Sergeant package, including early access to all of the programs that we're going
- 35:35to do on the show. Plus you get access to my unedited commentary,
- 35:39at least unedited by Andrews. I will also share with you all public domain
- 35:46safe radio programs that I listened to during the week, So I listened to

- 36:38I got into it, I was glad to see these two episodes pop up.
- 36:43It isn't great mysteries, but it's still enjoyable, and she expresses her
- 36:47support for having them listeners as our mystery guests, which we're trying to do,
- 36:52and then says, thanks, Adam. You'll always make my day whenever
- 36:57I get to listen to these shows that you put out. You have grown
