- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Runnels Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:05Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Good morning. Headlines are brought to you by Frostbrook. Of course,
- 0:10Speaker 2: I choose chill. Happy Wednesday to you. George Kirby, Kyle
- 0:14Speaker 2: Raleigh again, Josh Naylor, and the Mariners. Are you back
- 0:18Speaker 2: to believing? Kirby's ready. Schwarber's ready.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Swing and a miss. Challenge accepted.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Kirby pumping the gas right to Kyle Schwarber to begin
- 0:28Speaker 2: the ballgame tonight.
- 0:31Speaker 3: He's chasing a sweeper off the plate.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Back-to-back punch-outs from Kirby to begin his night.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Well, two batters, both guys swinging at the first pitch,
- 0:38Speaker 4: but no one's catching up with the velocity yet.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Swung on and missed. A splitter that disappeared. And George Kirby,
- 0:45Speaker 3: seventh strikeout of the night.
- 0:46Speaker 2: He's retired ten in a row. He has been awesome
- 0:49Speaker 2: against the Phillies tonight.
- 0:51Speaker 3: The encore performance will be a challenge tonight for Cal Rollin.
- 0:54Speaker 3: His first career three-homer game last night. He leads things off.
- 0:59Speaker 3: This ball barreled down the line. Cal Raleigh has returned!
- 1:05Speaker 3: There goes Julio.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Swing and a miss.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Throw is wide. Tag applied. Not in time. 17 stolen
- 1:12Speaker 3: bases for Julio.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Now in scoring position.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Right back up the middle into center field. Julio hits third.
- 1:20Speaker 3: On his way home. Julio is saved.
- 1:22Speaker 2: And the Mariners take the lead. So you're telling me
- 1:26Speaker 2: there's a chance.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Yeah!
- 1:33Speaker 2: Jim Carrey lives forever with that. Kirby, seven and two-thirds, 9K,
- 1:38Speaker 2: six hits, one run allowed against a team that was
- 1:40Speaker 2: the hottest in baseball coming into Seattle. Nine-game winning streak.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Raleigh Homer for the fourth consecutive at-bat. Nailers go ahead
- 1:48Speaker 2: single after that stolen base. Without the stolen base, Julio
- 1:51Speaker 2: Rodriguez doesn't score there. Bottom of the sixth gave the
- 1:54Speaker 2: Mariners a lead, sent them to a 4-1 win over
- 1:56Speaker 2: the Phillies, a series win over a playoff-bound team, and
- 1:59Speaker 2: as I said, had a nine-game winning streak before it
- 2:01Speaker 2: got here. The M's are two and a half back
- 2:03Speaker 2: in the trash cans, and the ALS with 29 games remaining.
- 2:07Speaker 2: This afternoon, the series finale at the Yard, and so
- 2:10Speaker 2: do all eyes on Brian Wu starting today after getting
- 2:12Speaker 2: pushed back twice because of shoulder tightness. J.P. Crawford back
- 2:15Speaker 2: from the injury list, started at third base. Brock Rodden stayed.
- 2:20Speaker 2: They let Leo Rivas go back to Tacoma. The M's
- 2:23Speaker 2: plan is for Crawford to shortstop Brendan Donovan when he
- 2:26Speaker 2: comes off the concussion list to third base, perhaps this
- 2:28Speaker 2: weekend in the series in Toronto. Hey, and it sounds
- 2:31Speaker 2: like a six-man piggybacking rotation is coming back. Kate Anderson
- 2:35Speaker 2: now with the M's. Bryce Miller staying in the rotation,
- 2:38Speaker 2: so it sounds like the M's are going to do.
- 2:40Speaker 2: You ready for more of that? Seahawks return from Nashville,
- 2:43Speaker 2: practiced in Renton yesterday, put Bud Clark and Mason Richmond,
- 2:47Speaker 2: the backup offensive lineman, on injured reserve, ending their seasons.
- 2:51Speaker 2: That's three guys on to IR and reserve. In four days,
- 2:54Speaker 2: and when you go on IR in preseason, it means
- 2:56Speaker 2: your season's over. That counts Jake Bobo with his major
- 2:59Speaker 2: knee injury, ACL tear from the joint practice Friday in Nashville. Yesterday,
- 3:03Speaker 2: I saw Nick Emanwuri's second straight practice in cleats. He
- 3:06Speaker 2: was not in a jersey, but he was practicing running
- 3:08Speaker 2: on the side. Another incremental step toward him, possibly coming
- 3:12Speaker 2: back from that arthroscopic ankle surgery to play week one.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Week one is two weeks from today. Trevon Diggs, full go,
- 3:19Speaker 2: trying to ramp up quick. His new cornerback, Jadarian Price,
- 3:22Speaker 2: was full go again yesterday. He's not going to play.
- 3:24Speaker 2: In fact, none of the 22 starters are going to
- 3:26Speaker 2: play for the Seahawks Friday in the preseason game at
- 3:27Speaker 2: Kansas City. Fourth Hard Knocks episode on the Seahawks training
- 3:31Speaker 2: camp last night on HBO. We're going to talk at
- 3:32Speaker 2: length about that, including some leadership lessons. Seahawks Brasser in
- 3:36Speaker 2: Atlanta for the NFL Special Owners Meeting today to vote
- 3:39Speaker 2: on the sale of the Seahawks. Kozla family, $ 9. 61 billion.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Need 24 or 32 owners to vote yes. Not only
- 3:44Speaker 2: is that expected, it's supposed to be a unanimous vote, perhaps.
- 3:48Speaker 2: We should learn about that mid to late afternoon, our time.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Sounders made official their signing of Sporting KC Sergeant Dejan Jogovic.
- 3:57Speaker 2: New designated player, our friend Nico Moreno, sounder at heart,
- 4:00Speaker 2: MLS Espanol. First to report, the Sounders worked on a
- 4:02Speaker 2: two-and-a-half-year extension for Albert Ruschnick to drop his salary below
- 4:06Speaker 2: the designated player threshold, and that's how they got.
- 4:08Speaker 3: The Oval Edge.
- 4:08Speaker 2: New York Giants wide receiver Calvin Austin III, formerly with
- 4:12Speaker 2: the Steelers, will miss the upcoming season with a torn ACL.
- 4:14Speaker 2: That was from a route he was running in practice yesterday,
- 4:18Speaker 2: according to ESPN. The Southeastern Conference has joined the Big
- 4:21Speaker 2: Ten in prohibiting players who have been drafted by the NFL,
- 4:23Speaker 2: the NBA, or the WNBA from or been on a
- 4:26Speaker 2: roster of teams in those leagues from playing in the
- 4:28Speaker 2: college conferences. We talked about this yesterday. That's the next
- 4:31Speaker 2: step in the SEC and the Big Ten splitting off
- 4:34Speaker 2: and playing by their own rules as the haves in
- 4:36Speaker 2: college sports. Now on with the Wednesday show. I just
- 4:40Speaker 2: left Nashville, and that town is in mourning. She died
- 4:42Speaker 2: in Nashville. What is really cool, if there's a cool thing,
- 4:49Speaker 2: but the legacy of somebody, maybe you don't know until
- 4:52Speaker 2: they pass away when, You learn about all this. I
- 4:54Speaker 2: think I mentioned yesterday, my wife, Jessamyn, Wendy, just loves
- 4:59Speaker 2: Dolly Parton. She always has. She's told me how much
- 5:02Speaker 2: she has done for people beyond her music and her
- 5:05Speaker 2: Hollywood career.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Oh, the library? Forget it.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Right.
- 5:08Speaker 2: A lot of people didn't know about the library. 320
- 5:12Speaker 2: million books donated to kids so they can– improve their
- 5:16Speaker 2: literacy it's.
- 5:17Speaker 6: A part of a literacy program yeah it's called the imagination.
- 5:20Speaker 2: It's called the imagination library and she's had it for
- 5:23Speaker 2: decades and it's taught kids to read she'd grew up
- 5:28Speaker 2: poor in east tennessee some of you may know this
- 5:30Speaker 2: story by now that she's passed and there's been a
- 5:31Speaker 2: lot of tributes to her she grew up poor in
- 5:33Speaker 2: east tennessee in a cabin had no electricity a two-room
- 5:36Speaker 2: cabin and no electricity no running water Yet she came
- 5:40Speaker 2: from there to use her platform, not just to sing
- 5:42Speaker 2: and make money, but to make people's lives better. I
- 5:46Speaker 2: told you about the book. She built hospitals. She gave
- 5:50Speaker 2: in her town, when she first started her career, she
- 5:52Speaker 2: gave every kid in her town who graduated from high
- 5:54Speaker 2: school $ 500 as an incentive. During COVID, when it shut
- 6:00Speaker 2: down the country, of course, and shut down Tennessee, and
- 6:02Speaker 2: it shut down East Tennessee, and it really, it wrecked
- 6:05Speaker 2: the economy there. She gave every person in her hometown...
- 6:09Speaker 2: $ 1, 000 a month for a year, and then in the
- 6:12Speaker 2: last month, $ 5, 000. Every person in her hometown. She spent
- 6:16Speaker 2: $ 9 million that year giving away that money to people
- 6:21Speaker 2: in her hometown. I mentioned how she grew up poor
- 6:26Speaker 2: in East Tennessee. When she first started going to school,
- 6:30Speaker 2: her mother would use old dishcloths and washcloths of different
- 6:34Speaker 2: colors and sew them together as a coat. And that
- 6:39Speaker 2: was the coat Dolly Parton wore to school. And the
- 6:42Speaker 2: kids made fun of her, as kids do. It was different.
- 6:45Speaker 2: It was all these different colors and ratty. Dolly Parton never,
- 6:50Speaker 2: ever took off that coat. She loved it for what
- 6:52Speaker 2: it represented and how much her mother was invested in
- 6:56Speaker 2: trying to get her a coat for school and the
- 6:59Speaker 2: quilt work that it took to make that coat out
- 7:00Speaker 2: of dishcloth.
- 7:01Speaker 5: The blood, sweat, and tears to do that, yes.
- 7:03Speaker 2: When Dolly Parton was born in 1946... her parents, her
- 7:09Speaker 2: father was a sharecropper. Her father worked on other people's farms.
- 7:13Speaker 2: They weren't rich enough to have their own farm. They
- 7:16Speaker 2: paid the doctor who delivered Dolly Parton in 1946 with
- 7:19Speaker 2: a bag of oats. That's where Dolly Parton came from
- 7:24Speaker 2: to what she became. I mean, there are people that
- 7:31Speaker 2: do things and then there's Dolly Parton. She's, off the charts.
- 7:36Speaker 2: And my, my wife always explained this to me, but
- 7:37Speaker 2: it really didn't hit home to me until yesterday. And
- 7:39Speaker 2: then all the tributes coming in and of course, nine
- 7:42Speaker 2: to five. And she became mainstream.
- 7:46Speaker 5: I grew up with, yep.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I will tell you, having just been in Nashville for
- 7:49Speaker 2: five days, they might as well call that Dolly Partonville.
- 7:52Speaker 2: My wife wanted to go to Dollywood last weekend, but
- 7:55Speaker 2: it's three hours one way. It's in the, it's in
- 7:57Speaker 2: the great smoky mountains region where she grew up. So
- 8:00Speaker 2: it's not exactly an easy trip. And then, So we
- 8:03Speaker 2: decided that she decided not to do it. But all
- 8:06Speaker 2: over town, the Grand Ole Opry has basically a shrine
- 8:08Speaker 2: to Dolly Parton. The city of Nashville itself has Dolly
- 8:12Speaker 2: Parton everywhere. I told you we stayed across the street
- 8:15Speaker 2: from a Dolly Parton hotel that she owns. It's being
- 8:17Speaker 2: currently renovated in downtown Nashville. It would not surprise me.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I haven't seen plans. It would not surprise me if
- 8:24Speaker 2: there's a funeral procession through downtown Nashville for Dolly Parton.
- 8:26Speaker 5: Oh, it's going to be a parade.
- 8:28Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 8:28Speaker 6: People are going to travel for that. Bigger than the
- 8:31Speaker 6: royal wedding in my mind.
- 8:33Speaker 2: If there was ever a reason to bump Return of
- 8:35Speaker 2: the Mack and Mark Morrison off the top of the show,
- 8:37Speaker 2: it's definitely Dolly Parton, her most famous and maybe best
- 8:41Speaker 2: song from the early 1970s and Jolene. Also on the
- 8:45Speaker 2: show today with Greg Bell, Jessamyn McIntyre with you every weekday,
- 8:48Speaker 2: 10 a.m. to noon. That's Jessamyn's voice you hear here
- 8:50Speaker 2: at LA-based studios in downtown Seattle. We're reunited again. Mariners,
- 8:54Speaker 2: do you believe? Are you back on board? I mean,
- 8:57Speaker 2: you're two and a half back in a very, very
- 8:59Speaker 2: poor division that we've documented very well, and I think
- 9:01Speaker 2: you already know by now. Do you believe? 49451 under
- 9:05Speaker 2: the Comedodge text line. That's one of the questions we'll ask.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Are you back on board on the Mariners? They've shown it.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Eight and four in this tough stretch against the Yankees,
- 9:14Speaker 2: the Trashcans, the Cubs, and the Phillies. Fourth Hard Knocks episode,
- 9:18Speaker 2: what stood out? The brutality and the humanity of the sport.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Pretty much on display with Jake Bobo and Bud Clark's injuries.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Vividly when you see it in audio, I mean video,
- 9:29Speaker 2: and I can describe it on radio and I can
- 9:31Speaker 2: write it in print, but then when it's right in
- 9:33Speaker 2: front of your face on video. 1045, you hear from
- 9:36Speaker 2: Byron Murphy, and you'll hear from Jaron Reed again gushing
- 9:39Speaker 2: about Byron Murphy. When you hear Byron Murphy, you'll hear
- 9:44Speaker 2: John Schneider shout down my question to Byron Murphy about
- 9:47Speaker 2: Jalen Milrow's new rich contract. John Schneider does not want
- 9:51Speaker 2: that subject broached this year. That'll be something for next year.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Got it, got it.
- 9:56Speaker 3: He was joking.
- 9:57Speaker 2: He was trying to say it in a joking way,
- 9:58Speaker 2: but he definitely wanted to make sure that the Jalen
- 10:00Speaker 2: Carter issue is not something that Byron Murphy concerns himself with.
- 10:04Speaker 2: But Byron Murphy knows. He knows how much Jalen Carter
- 10:08Speaker 2: got paid. Mike McDonald and the Seahawks have a new
- 10:10Speaker 2: pass rush planned for Murphy. We'll talk about that. 11 o'clock.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Farhan Lalji, TSN Canada. Our weekly NFL guest. Just got
- 10:18Speaker 2: back from Chiefs training camp. He's going to tell us
- 10:21Speaker 2: what he saw in Kenneth Walker, and it's a lot.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Walker actually mispracticed yesterday with a foot issue. We in
- 10:28Speaker 2: Seattle know about Kenneth Walker's issue. We know about running
- 10:30Speaker 2: backs and injury issues. We'll read back your text and
- 10:34Speaker 2: play back your talkbacks at 1130. The talkbacks go to
- 10:37Speaker 2: the iHeartRadio app or 933KGR. com, and there's a red microphone
- 10:41Speaker 2: button at the top. Play that. Leave a voicemail of
- 10:44Speaker 2: 30 seconds or less, and we will play that back
- 10:47Speaker 2: at 1130. And Jessamyn will play it back. Because she
- 10:49Speaker 2: loves talkbacks. I will. For sure she will.
- 10:51Speaker 5: I want to know if people are believing. That's where
- 10:54Speaker 5: I am right now. That's my biggest question.
- 10:55Speaker 2: That is my question for the talkbacks and for my
- 10:58Speaker 2: first question for the Tacoma Dodge text line. Are the
- 11:00Speaker 2: Mariners back? Do you re-believe? Like I said yesterday, are
- 11:03Speaker 2: you Ted Lasso-ing in the Mariners? Mentioned the 8-4 tough stretch.
- 11:09Speaker 2: The Cubs, since they left town, have scored 30 unanswered runs.
- 11:14Speaker 2: That's what the Mariners did to them last week. They've
- 11:15Speaker 2: taken two or three from them. Coming up, here's the
- 11:19Speaker 2: deal for the Mariners. They have no picnic in Toronto.
- 11:22Speaker 2: They have their own vendetta in history with Toronto, who's
- 11:26Speaker 2: kind of revived because the American League is so bad
- 11:28Speaker 2: that the Blue Jays are in the back of the
- 11:30Speaker 2: playoff race. Boston, who just came back from the dead
- 11:33Speaker 2: in the first half of the season to win like
- 11:35Speaker 2: 28 or 30 games, holding a playoff spot. So Toronto-Boston
- 11:39Speaker 2: next week, no picnic. But then check this out. The
- 11:42Speaker 2: Mariners play in succession to end the season after next
- 11:45Speaker 2: week's Boston-Toronto road trip. A's Rangers, A's Angels, trash cans
- 11:51Speaker 2: two at home, Angels to finish the regular season. Not
- 11:54Speaker 2: one of those teams has a winning record, of course.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Then again, neither do the Mariners.
- 11:59Speaker 5: Yeah, but they're on the up.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Jessamyn's a believer. I am.
- 12:04Speaker 6: I mean, that's kind of par for the course when
- 12:05Speaker 6: it comes to me. So I take that with a
- 12:07Speaker 6: grain of salt. But no, I was not last week.
- 12:11Speaker 6: At the beginning of last week, I was not. And
- 12:14Speaker 6: they got me back.
- 12:15Speaker 2: What got you back?
- 12:18Speaker 5: Well, Kirby being.
- 12:19Speaker 6: As commanding as he was, that's a huge, huge part
- 12:22Speaker 6: of it. We're seeing him again. And then Cal, Cal
- 12:27Speaker 6: lighting up. Julio with his base stealing yesterday. You know,
- 12:31Speaker 6: just watching him be paying attention is a huge thing, too.
- 12:37Speaker 6: But it seems like with all of these things going
- 12:40Speaker 6: in the right direction, and what I really liked yesterday,
- 12:43Speaker 6: and I even said this on social media, is is
- 12:46Speaker 6: the aggression that I'm seeing from them, where in a
- 12:50Speaker 6: series or two ago, you saw a little bit more
- 12:53Speaker 6: lackadaisical play, just with mind farts and things like that.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Throwing the ball in the stands during play.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Right.
- 13:02Speaker 6: And this just seemed like they're back. They're ready to
- 13:06Speaker 6: be aggressive. They have their heads in the game, but
- 13:08Speaker 6: they want to be aggressive. And that actually probably trumps
- 13:12Speaker 6: anything else. I don't expect Julio to keep hitting home
- 13:15Speaker 6: runs at the current clip he's at.
- 13:17Speaker 5: I'm sorry, Cal, I meant.
- 13:20Speaker 6: I think Julio is getting warmer and getting warmer, and
- 13:23Speaker 6: he's performing at the necessary times. Josh Naylor, same thing.
- 13:29Speaker 6: I don't mind that he got, and it was a
- 13:30Speaker 6: very close call. I don't mind that they challenged that
- 13:33Speaker 6: play at second base when he drove in Julio. I
- 13:36Speaker 6: also appreciate that he went for two. I thought that
- 13:40Speaker 6: was the right move to make in that situation.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Yeah, throw through.
- 13:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I liked it.
- 13:46Speaker 6: And that is the biggest part of it. Kirby looking
- 13:49Speaker 6: like Kirby. Be interesting to see how the rest of
- 13:53Speaker 6: the pitching staff holds up.
- 13:54Speaker 5: Will they piggyback? Will they not? It kind of looks
- 13:57Speaker 5: like they might.
- 13:58Speaker 6: I don't know what Wu's health and readiness is. Maybe
- 14:03Speaker 6: it's not a piggyback, but making sure that he's in
- 14:06Speaker 6: the right spot.
- 14:08Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 14:09Speaker 5: There's a lot of reasons.
- 14:10Speaker 6: But the aggression I saw last night and their stick-to-itiveness...
- 14:14Speaker 6: And knowing they can win a game is pretty much
- 14:16Speaker 6: the biggest thing that got me back.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Kyle Raleigh mentioned it yesterday and it's continued after last night.
- 14:22Speaker 2: His on-base percentage is now over 500 in the last
- 14:25Speaker 2: nine days because he was on base three times last
- 14:27Speaker 2: night with two walks in the home run. That alone,
- 14:31Speaker 2: eight for 22 and an on-base percentage above 500, that
- 14:36Speaker 2: alone transforms the Mariners. I mean, that's the flag. That
- 14:40Speaker 2: is the aircraft carrier that took you to the ALCS
- 14:43Speaker 2: last year, of course, with the 60-plus home runs. But that,
- 14:46Speaker 2: to me, is the difference. Yeah, Kirby, that was very,
- 14:49Speaker 2: very encouraging, to say the least. Mowing down the Phillies
- 14:52Speaker 2: for 7-2. And how about the Mariners letting a guy
- 14:54Speaker 2: pitch 7-2 innings? Hey, that helps. Of course, Kirby was
- 14:58Speaker 2: so efficient, only threw 92 pitches in those innings. Only
- 15:02Speaker 2: needed one out from Ferrer in the 8th inning, and
- 15:05Speaker 2: then Munoz again. Although he walked two guys. Again, the
- 15:09Speaker 2: biggest difference when Munoz gets his save, 24th, he's throwing
- 15:13Speaker 2: his fastball now. I talked all spring and early in
- 15:16Speaker 2: the season, what's he throwing this slider in big situations for?
- 15:19Speaker 2: He's got a 103-mile-an-hour fastball. Use that. And now he is.
- 15:24Speaker 2: And he's blowing dudes away with that fastball and primarily
- 15:28Speaker 2: focusing on the fastball. But, yeah, Kirby's start was encouraging.
- 15:32Speaker 2: A Rose Arena, now the new number one hitter producing,
- 15:37Speaker 2: but And.
- 15:37Speaker 5: His defensive play has been phenomenal.
- 15:39Speaker 2: It's almost like he woke up.
- 15:41Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 15:41Speaker 2: And maybe his hamstring is better. He's no longer playing hurt,
- 15:45Speaker 2: as so many Mariners have played hurt. Rodriguez, yes. But
- 15:49Speaker 2: most of all, Cal Raleigh. And, man, it shows you
- 15:53Speaker 2: what a 150 hitter with an OPS of 500 does
- 15:56Speaker 2: to your lineup. It drags you down. He's gained 100-plus
- 15:59Speaker 2: points in OPS in, like, the last three days. And
- 16:03Speaker 2: that is transformed. The Mariners, they can get away with
- 16:06Speaker 2: pitchers giving up two or three runs in an outing
- 16:10Speaker 2: if Kyle Raleigh's doing this. When Kyle Raleigh was where
- 16:13Speaker 2: he was, there's no margin for error for the pitching
- 16:15Speaker 2: staff or the defense. Well, there is now because of
- 16:18Speaker 2: Kyle Raleigh. 49451, I'd be interested to hear if you
- 16:21Speaker 2: are back on board. And why not? I mean, there's
- 16:24Speaker 2: still 29 games to play, and the division is so poor.
- 16:28Speaker 2: We've said this so many times. If you win the division,
- 16:32Speaker 2: who knows? Because the AL Central— I call it the AL
- 16:37Speaker 2: North because all the teams are in the North. But
- 16:39Speaker 2: the AL Central, last I checked, is five, six games over.
- 16:42Speaker 2: 500 is the first-place team, the White Sox. So they're
- 16:46Speaker 2: within range. Because if you can get to. 500 and
- 16:50Speaker 2: get a No. 2 seed behind the AL East leader,
- 16:53Speaker 2: then you avoid that first round, which is how the
- 16:54Speaker 2: Mariners got going last year in the playoffs, facing Detroit
- 16:58Speaker 2: after Detroit already had a series— Just get there because
- 17:02Speaker 2: of their pitching staff and if Kyle Rowley's heading like this.
- 17:05Speaker 2: I'm not going to say I'm truly believing again because
- 17:08Speaker 2: of a team that's still, what, five games under 500.
- 17:12Speaker 2: But that's where this division in this American League has
- 17:15Speaker 2: been this year.
- 17:16Speaker 5: Well, yeah, and like you said, just getting there. And
- 17:19Speaker 5: Wu is on the mound today.
- 17:20Speaker 6: I'm interested to see how many innings they give him
- 17:24Speaker 6: and how they manage that.
- 17:26Speaker 5: And it might not be a piggyback.
- 17:28Speaker 6: I don't know if they've outright said that they're going
- 17:30Speaker 6: to do that or not, but they have the ability to.
- 17:32Speaker 5: But we'll see. They've got a decent bullpen as of late.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Wu pushed back on his last two starts from Saturday.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Of course, the reason why Kate Anderson made his Major
- 17:47Speaker 2: League debut Saturday was because of pushing back Wu from
- 17:49Speaker 2: Saturday to this start on Wednesday. Shoulder tightness that he
- 17:53Speaker 2: had on his last start, which is now what? 10
- 17:57Speaker 2: days ago or so. So yes, to your point, Jessamyn,
- 18:01Speaker 2: you can't expect seven and two-thirds out of Woo today.
- 18:04Speaker 2: But he is home, where he's a completely different pitcher
- 18:06Speaker 2: than on the road, and the bullpen's rested because you
- 18:10Speaker 2: only needed four outs from him last night. That's the
- 18:13Speaker 2: other thing Kirby's outing did. They know they have a
- 18:15Speaker 2: starter today in Woo that they can't rely on to
- 18:18Speaker 2: go deep in the game because of shoulder tightness. Now
- 18:20Speaker 2: you've got a bullpen that's rested. Now that you didn't
- 18:23Speaker 2: tax him last night because of what Kirby did, 92
- 18:25Speaker 2: pitches in seven and two-thirds, which is why they let
- 18:27Speaker 2: him run a little bit.
- 18:29Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 18:30Speaker 2: It's looking like a pro outfit all of a sudden.
- 18:32Speaker 2: And we had a texter yesterday on the text line,
- 18:35Speaker 2: the 49451, the Tacoma Dodge text line, text him. He
- 18:38Speaker 2: said he's a Green Bay fan, a Packers fan. And
- 18:40Speaker 2: he was chiding us for how we go so wildly
- 18:43Speaker 2: swinging on the Mariners, from giving up on them, they're terrible,
- 18:46Speaker 2: to are they back? Do you believe again? And I
- 18:49Speaker 2: made the point, I responded in print to him in
- 18:51Speaker 2: the text, The reason we're doing that is because this
- 18:53Speaker 2: division is so poor that it only, as we've said
- 18:56Speaker 2: a thousand times, it only takes a few wins in
- 18:58Speaker 2: a row and you're right back in it.
- 18:59Speaker 7: Right.
- 19:00Speaker 2: That's just the math of it. Two and a half
- 19:02Speaker 2: back with 29 games left.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Do you believe?
- 19:05Speaker 5: Well, even last year, mid-season, in June.
- 19:09Speaker 8: Yes.
- 19:10Speaker 5: You know, people were on the don't believe train.
- 19:12Speaker 7: Yes.
- 19:13Speaker 2: So look what happened then. And the season before that,
- 19:14Speaker 2: when they were in last place.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Yes, exactly.
- 19:17Speaker 2: And then they went on a 14-game winning streak. And yes.
- 19:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:22Speaker 2: It's a little late this year, but they are following
- 19:24Speaker 2: a pattern of second half uprisings. And is it enough
- 19:29Speaker 2: to get in? Yeah, I believe. We'll see. If Cal
- 19:34Speaker 2: Raleigh hits like this, they're going to make the playoffs.
- 19:36Speaker 2: That's the bottom line. And if Cal Raleigh hits like
- 19:38Speaker 2: this in the playoffs, they're going to go far in
- 19:40Speaker 2: the playoffs because I believe they're pitching. Pitching hasn't always
- 19:43Speaker 2: been there this year, but it's starting to work. You
- 19:46Speaker 2: can see how this team should be well ahead of
- 19:49Speaker 2: where they've been all season. when they play like this.
- 19:52Speaker 2: We'll read back your texts at 1130 and see if
- 19:54Speaker 2: all of you believe as well. Up next, a lot
- 19:57Speaker 2: to talk about in the fourth Hard Knocks episode that
- 19:59Speaker 2: you may or may not have seen last night. If
- 20:00Speaker 2: you haven't seen it, well, I'm about to tell you
- 20:03Speaker 2: what the key points were from someone who's out there
- 20:06Speaker 2: every day. There were some interesting leadership points. not only
- 20:09Speaker 2: from Mike McDonald, but from Julian Love and others, and
- 20:13Speaker 2: then the humanity and just the cold reality of football
- 20:15Speaker 2: right in front of you on your eyes last night
- 20:17Speaker 2: watching two major injuries and the fallout from it. The
- 20:21Speaker 2: Hard Knocks episode of the Seahawks is coming up next
- 20:22Speaker 2: at 11 o'clock. Farhan Lalji, TSN Canada about the NFL.
- 20:26Speaker 2: We'll hear from Brian Murphy and Jaron Reed gushing about
- 20:28Speaker 2: Byron Murphy. All that's coming up on our show on
- 20:30Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM. Is that the Factor Fiction music at times?
- 20:53Speaker 2: At least maybe Chris played it Factor Fiction that way.
- 20:56Speaker 5: I think every show has their own.
- 20:58Speaker 7: Yeah. Might be.
- 20:59Speaker 5: I like it, though. Guess we in the mood for football.
- 21:02Speaker 2: That is. On the text line, I see a couple questions.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Are you having Factor Fiction again? Yes, we are. It's
- 21:08Speaker 2: the first week of the NFL season, right?
- 21:10Speaker 5: It starts next week.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Oh, next week.
- 21:13Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Okay. Because the college football season actually begins this weekend.
- 21:17Speaker 2: There's a game TCU's playing in Ireland.
- 21:19Speaker 6: Right.
- 21:20Speaker 2: And then next week is the opening of the full
- 21:23Speaker 2: college slate.
- 21:24Speaker 9: Right.
- 21:24Speaker 5: So it's before college football.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Including the Apple Cup, which will be Labor Day Sunday.
- 21:29Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 21:30Speaker 2: That's weird. Labor Day weekend Sunday at 1 o'clock, Jessamyn
- 21:33Speaker 2: McIntyre will be in crimson and gray on the sidelines
- 21:36Speaker 2: of Washington State. Elyse Woodward will make her debut as
- 21:40Speaker 2: the voice of the Huskies here on 93.3 KJRFM. Washington State,
- 21:43Speaker 2: Washington in the Apple Cup at Husky Stadium on Sunday.
- 21:46Speaker 2: What's that, September the 4th? whatever date that is Sunday
- 21:49Speaker 2: of Labor Day weekend at one o'clock kickoff pregame show.
- 21:53Speaker 2: You know, they do it 20 hours in advance. The
- 21:54Speaker 2: Husky honks. All that'll be on 93.
- 21:57Speaker 5: That's September 6th.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Thank you. September the 6th. But yes, we're having factor fiction.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Thanks for Jessamyn pointing out. It'll be next week. Not
- 22:06Speaker 2: to brag, but the last time they gave me a
- 22:08Speaker 2: microphone and factor fiction picks, I got like by far
- 22:12Speaker 2: lapped the field of the most in the station. They
- 22:14Speaker 2: didn't give me the crown of winning because they said
- 22:16Speaker 2: that Anders had higher percentage he picked like six games
- 22:20Speaker 2: and won four of them or something but i had
- 22:23Speaker 2: like 29 or 35 or whatever it was wins and
- 22:27Speaker 2: and i took army in the under for many of
- 22:28Speaker 2: those that year that's right on point for you those
- 22:32Speaker 2: veterans of the show right on west point for you
- 22:35Speaker 2: that's right man you got that right army in the
- 22:38Speaker 2: under for sure last night in the hard knocks episode
- 22:42Speaker 2: a lot went on the brutality and the humanity is
- 22:46Speaker 2: of the sport on full display. It's one thing for
- 22:48Speaker 2: me to write it. It's another to talk about it
- 22:50Speaker 2: on the radio. And then you see it front and
- 22:52Speaker 2: center and video and in places I can't get to
- 22:55Speaker 2: as a credentialed beat writer, the cameras for HBO and
- 22:59Speaker 2: NFL films are right there for Jake Bobo blowing out
- 23:02Speaker 2: his knee on that catch on the sideline in the
- 23:05Speaker 2: joint practice season ending. You could see on his face,
- 23:07Speaker 2: he knew. And then Bud Clark, uh, breaking his ankle
- 23:11Speaker 2: on the first defensive play of the preseason game Sunday
- 23:13Speaker 2: night in Nashville on the cart in the locker room,
- 23:17Speaker 2: in the training room, which of course we're never allowed
- 23:19Speaker 2: to go as reporters. And it begins with, we wanted
- 23:24Speaker 2: to play the scene of Bud Clark, the rookie safety,
- 23:28Speaker 2: second round pick. His season is over, sitting on the
- 23:31Speaker 2: training table with a broken ankle, A trainer is trying
- 23:35Speaker 2: to fit him for an air cast, and he's on
- 23:37Speaker 2: FaceTime with his fiancée and their little toddler son. This
- 23:41Speaker 2: was last night on NFL Films HBO Hard Knocks.
- 23:44Speaker 6: Hey, baby. Hey.
- 23:47Speaker 8: Is it broken?
- 23:48Speaker 10: It's not like I'm broke.
- 23:51Speaker 8: Yeah, I knew as soon as it hit, I said.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm broke.
- 23:55Speaker 11: I know.
- 23:56Speaker 10: Man, that was so hard to watch on TV.
- 23:58Speaker 8: Yeah. Piggy.
- 24:02Speaker 3: You all right?
- 24:03Speaker 7: Good.
- 24:03Speaker 8: They just snapped, cracked, and popped my ass.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Look at him. Look at him.
- 24:07Speaker 8: Who did that? I don't know who did it. You
- 24:10Speaker 8: going to kick their butt?
- 24:13Speaker 6: Huh?
- 24:13Speaker 8: You going to kick their butt?
- 24:15Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 24:16Speaker 8: Yeah. You're going to fix my life, then, aren't you? Yeah,
- 24:20Speaker 8: I'm going to fix your life.
- 24:21Speaker 2: I'll watch you outside, baby.
- 24:24Speaker 8: All right. Nice support underneath. What I want you to
- 24:30Speaker 8: do is slide down towards me. Damn. It's okay. Yeah,
- 24:45Speaker 8: it is. Hell yeah, baby.
- 24:48Speaker 2: We all agree.
- 24:51Speaker 8: I think about the lollipops and the unicorns.
- 25:04Speaker 6: Oh!
- 25:05Speaker 3: Oh, oh, oh.
- 25:08Speaker 8: It's okay, baby. There it is, bud.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Oh, it's okay.
- 25:11Speaker 8: It's okay. Set this on me.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Daddy, are you okay?
- 25:16Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 25:17Speaker 8: I'm all right.
- 25:20Speaker 3: It's okay.
- 25:20Speaker 2: It's okay.
- 25:21Speaker 10: It's okay.
- 25:21Speaker 8: All right. Just bend the knee and allow it to relax.
- 25:25Speaker 8: No pressure on it, obviously, okay?
- 25:26Speaker 3: Uh-huh. Okay.
- 25:29Speaker 8: Hold up, baby. I'm going to go get changed.
- 25:42Speaker 2: What do you think of them airing that?
- 25:46Speaker 6: I thought it showed another side of football and he
- 25:51Speaker 6: knew the cameras were there. I mean, it wasn't some
- 25:54Speaker 6: hidden camera or anything like that. Um, I really thought
- 25:58Speaker 6: it showed a lot about him, his family and, um,
- 26:01Speaker 6: how much he loves them trying to stay strong in
- 26:03Speaker 6: a moment.
- 26:04Speaker 5: That, you know, he was in extreme, extreme pain.
- 26:09Speaker 6: He didn't have any lidocaine, nothing, you know, in his
- 26:12Speaker 6: system yet to take that pain away. And if you
- 26:16Speaker 6: watched the segment, well, leading up to that moment, you
- 26:19Speaker 6: could hear how much pain he was on the field.
- 26:21Speaker 6: He knew it was broken the second the play ended.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Yes, he did.
- 26:24Speaker 6: And I'm okay with them airing it. And I think that,
- 26:28Speaker 6: and I hope that Bud could have asked the Seahawks
- 26:32Speaker 6: if he really didn't want it aired.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Oh, yes.
- 26:35Speaker 5: And the Seahawks would have demanded that it not.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Again, it's worth repeating. On every one of these episodes,
- 26:40Speaker 2: the Seahawks have about 36 hours before it airs that
- 26:43Speaker 2: they get to view it.
- 26:44Speaker 6: Right.
- 26:44Speaker 2: And General Manager John Snyder, Mike McDonald, whoever, the person
- 26:48Speaker 2: who's vice president of communications, they can all watch it.
- 26:51Speaker 2: They do watch it. And they can object and say,
- 26:54Speaker 2: here's why we don't want this in. And so they
- 26:57Speaker 2: cleared it. Yes. I... I agree with you. It shows
- 27:02Speaker 2: a side of football that we don't get to see often,
- 27:04Speaker 2: but that is real. That is all that happens all
- 27:07Speaker 2: the time. And that happens every Sunday and every game
- 27:09Speaker 2: and every single team of 32. My son, a college athlete,
- 27:16Speaker 2: played college soccer. He thought that was inappropriate because of
- 27:21Speaker 2: how personal the nature was in invading in someone's private
- 27:24Speaker 2: call with their fiancé and their son. And that's true,
- 27:28Speaker 2: but to your point, but Clark was almost serious. But
- 27:31Speaker 2: it brings up the point, what's Bud Clark going to say?
- 27:34Speaker 2: He's a rookie. His season just ended. He's in absolute
- 27:38Speaker 2: excruciating pain. He's really not giving a rip about a
- 27:41Speaker 2: camera and the fact that it's in there or even processing.
- 27:44Speaker 2: If Leonard Williams was on that table, ain't no way
- 27:47Speaker 2: Leonard Williams would permit his wife and his young son
- 27:51Speaker 2: was too young to talk right now, just born in March.
- 27:53Speaker 2: to be on a FaceTime call on national television. So
- 27:57Speaker 2: there's definitely that. It was a rookie who doesn't have
- 27:59Speaker 2: a lot of cachet or standing to say anything. He's
- 28:01Speaker 2: only been in the league for a month. But I
- 28:04Speaker 2: just found it interesting as a journalist and storyteller, okay,
- 28:08Speaker 2: why did you air that? And I think it's exactly
- 28:11Speaker 2: what you said, Jessamyn, about a side of the sport.
- 28:14Speaker 2: At the beginning of that, before we played the clip,
- 28:17Speaker 2: and he's in all this pain, His fiance, you can
- 28:20Speaker 2: hear her saying on the FaceTime call, think about the
- 28:22Speaker 2: lollipops and unicorns.
- 28:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:24Speaker 2: And it made him laugh.
- 28:26Speaker 6: I couldn't tell if she was talking to her son
- 28:28Speaker 6: or to Bud or to both of them at the
- 28:30Speaker 6: same time. And if you watch it, too, you can
- 28:34Speaker 6: see the pain on his face. And he's trying to laugh.
- 28:37Speaker 6: And he's trying to smile so hard. But that's because
- 28:42Speaker 6: his son was on there as well. And I would
- 28:44Speaker 6: think that also Bud wouldn't FaceTime them right then if
- 28:49Speaker 6: he truly didn't want. The camera was there, right? And
- 28:54Speaker 6: he wanted to talk to them right then. But he
- 28:58Speaker 6: had every wherewithal to say, give me a minute.
- 29:01Speaker 2: It's true. And they're his comfort, obviously. That's what he
- 29:04Speaker 2: wanted at that moment. It was all, Daddy, who hurt you?
- 29:08Speaker 2: We're going to go get him. Will you fix my bike?
- 29:11Speaker 5: He's two?
- 29:12Speaker 2: He's two and a half.
- 29:14Speaker 5: Two and a half, okay.
- 29:16Speaker 2: I saw him on the sidelines. His fiancée and Bud
- 29:19Speaker 2: Clark had their child while he was still playing at
- 29:22Speaker 2: Texas Christian University. I've talked to him and written stories
- 29:25Speaker 2: about that experience of being a father while a student
- 29:28Speaker 2: athlete in college. That itself is unique. The Jake Bobo, again,
- 29:33Speaker 2: from a storyteller perspective, I thought it was interesting that
- 29:35Speaker 2: they created the story arc with the very first scene
- 29:37Speaker 2: of the episode before the credits even ran. above Jake
- 29:41Speaker 2: Bobo and his wide receiver coach, Frisman Jackson, together. Bobo
- 29:44Speaker 2: challenging Jackson a little bit, because Jackson was challenging him.
- 29:49Speaker 2: And Bobo came out and said, let me free. Let
- 29:52Speaker 2: me do what I need to be. Remember, Bobo missed
- 29:56Speaker 2: about two weeks with a hamstring injury. I saw him
- 30:00Speaker 2: when he came back last Monday. I was watching him
- 30:02Speaker 2: work out early in the practice and catch a long pass.
- 30:06Speaker 2: And when he did, he felt the hamstring pull again.
- 30:09Speaker 2: And he screamed and he grabbed the back of his leg.
- 30:13Speaker 2: And I remember thinking at the time, I wonder how
- 30:16Speaker 2: he's going to handle this. He probably shouldn't finish this practice.
- 30:19Speaker 2: But no doubt, he knows Montori Foster is coming hard.
- 30:23Speaker 2: He knows Emmanuel Henderson may make the team as an
- 30:26Speaker 2: extra wide receiver and a special teams gunner. Well, Jake
- 30:29Speaker 2: Bobo stayed on the field and practiced not only the
- 30:31Speaker 2: rest of that day, the rest of that week, but
- 30:33Speaker 2: in the rest of that practice, he was holding the
- 30:35Speaker 2: back of his hamstring and rubbing it and flexing it,
- 30:37Speaker 2: and he was hobbled. And he was not 100% when
- 30:42Speaker 2: he had that joint practice in Nashville on Friday before
- 30:45Speaker 2: the knee blew out. I'm not saying they're related, but
- 30:48Speaker 2: I'm just saying that Bobo's mindset at that time was,
- 30:51Speaker 2: I have to stay on the field here because you
- 30:53Speaker 2: heard Frisman Jackson in the coaches meeting that they showed
- 30:55Speaker 2: last night on the episode saying, Bobo's got to get
- 30:58Speaker 2: on the field and be on the field and be healthy.
- 31:01Speaker 2: And he talked about all the guys that were coming
- 31:03Speaker 2: up behind him, including Foster. Fritzman Jackson thought that maybe
- 31:07Speaker 2: Bobo's roster spot was in jeopardy. And here's a guy
- 31:09Speaker 2: who just signed a two-year deal with $ 4. 5 million guaranteed
- 31:12Speaker 2: this spring when the Seahawks matched the Jaguars' offer. Very
- 31:16Speaker 2: interesting to see what Bobo's mindset was right before he
- 31:19Speaker 2: blew out his knee. And I know what he's probably
- 31:22Speaker 2: thinking is, I was playing on half a leg anyway.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Because he did. tweak it again when he came back
- 31:28Speaker 2: on that Monday. I watched it. It was interesting to
- 31:30Speaker 2: see him come back to practice the rest of that week,
- 31:32Speaker 2: even though I knew he was less than 100%. You
- 31:34Speaker 2: could see him running not very fluidly. Julian Love, when
- 31:40Speaker 2: we came on the air Friday, the practice was just ending.
- 31:44Speaker 2: It's a really tough spot to try to be a
- 31:46Speaker 2: writer and a reporter and a radio host live on
- 31:49Speaker 2: the air. trying to see everything and process everything while
- 31:51Speaker 2: talking to you. And I could see Julian Love talking
- 31:54Speaker 2: to Leonard Williams in somewhat of an animated fashion as
- 31:56Speaker 2: they came off the field right when practice ended. And
- 31:59Speaker 2: I made a mental note of thinking, I wonder what
- 32:01Speaker 2: that was about. Well, last night we saw what that
- 32:02Speaker 2: was about. And Julian Love was talking to Williams saying
- 32:06Speaker 2: that the team needed to have better, quote, competitive stamina.
- 32:11Speaker 2: And I thought that was a perfect description for what
- 32:13Speaker 2: I saw and I've seen all in training camp. That
- 32:17Speaker 2: is really telling because, one, that means the reserves, right?
- 32:20Speaker 2: Because the reserves have been the only ones playing in
- 32:22Speaker 2: the preseason games. The reserves are the ones that got
- 32:24Speaker 2: beat in the second half against Dallas. They got beat
- 32:26Speaker 2: in the second half, blowing a 16-3 lead that Drew
- 32:30Speaker 2: Glock and the starters on Sunday had built in Tennessee
- 32:33Speaker 2: in the preseason game. So the competitive stamina of being
- 32:37Speaker 2: able to be competitive throughout the practice, throughout the game,
- 32:40Speaker 2: falls on the reserves that have played this preseason. But
- 32:42Speaker 2: it also speaks to the starters, right? Because they haven't played.
- 32:48Speaker 2: What is their competitive stamina? They wilted some in that heat.
- 32:52Speaker 2: It was 100 degrees on the field in the joint
- 32:54Speaker 2: practice on Friday. And we saw Abe Lucas leave and
- 32:58Speaker 2: Montori Foster have a heat issue at the end of practice.
- 33:01Speaker 2: They weren't exactly up to competitive stamina for that entire
- 33:05Speaker 2: two hours on the field Friday. And that's what Love
- 33:07Speaker 2: was talking about with Williams. It's one thing to say,
- 33:10Speaker 2: oh yeah, the Seahawks starters haven't played since the Super Bowl.
- 33:14Speaker 2: So it's on the reserves that anything we're seeing issues
- 33:17Speaker 2: in preseason games. But it's another to say the Seahawks
- 33:20Speaker 2: starters haven't played since the Super Bowl. They're going to
- 33:22Speaker 2: go from February 8th in Santa Clara, hoisting the trophy,
- 33:26Speaker 2: to September 9th in the opener in New England without
- 33:28Speaker 2: having played. And Julian Love, as a leader of the team,
- 33:33Speaker 2: eloquently describing the competitive stamina is an issue for this team.
- 33:38Speaker 2: And if I had to say one thing about the
- 33:40Speaker 2: starters from this preseason, it would be that. How competitive,
- 33:44Speaker 2: what is their competitiveness for four quarters? We don't know
- 33:47Speaker 2: until they play again. Now, it helps the 20 of
- 33:50Speaker 2: the 22 starters from that Super Bowl team are back,
- 33:52Speaker 2: but they're all older. Some of them have gotten nicks
- 33:55Speaker 2: and pulls and aches, and Nicky Manwari's not back yet,
- 34:00Speaker 2: and we're two weeks away from the opener. I thought
- 34:02Speaker 2: that was a really interesting comment, the competitive stamina is
- 34:05Speaker 2: what he's concerned about. Montari Foster, they're making him a
- 34:08Speaker 2: national star, aren't they?
- 34:10Speaker 5: Yeah, rightfully so.
- 34:11Speaker 2: And I feel like, man, what a fortuitous interview we
- 34:14Speaker 2: had with him at the very start of training camp.
- 34:17Speaker 2: So good. When he told us about being a substitute
- 34:19Speaker 2: teacher and a real estate agent. At one point in
- 34:21Speaker 2: the episode last night, Frisman Jackson, a wide receiver coach, said, well,
- 34:24Speaker 2: were you selling insurance this time last year? Foster correct
- 34:27Speaker 2: him so those houses actually. That was from our show.
- 34:32Speaker 2: And he since has retold the story a couple of
- 34:34Speaker 2: times from Lakewood St. Ed High School, just outside of
- 34:37Speaker 2: his native Cleveland.
- 34:39Speaker 6: Before we go to break, because I know we have to,
- 34:41Speaker 6: I want to make a correction on the start of Factor.
- 34:43Speaker 8: Oh, yes.
- 34:44Speaker 6: I had that wrong. So that is on me. It
- 34:46Speaker 6: is not next week. It is on Labor Day, September 9th.
- 34:50Speaker 6: We're actually starting it on Monday on Labor Day because
- 34:53Speaker 6: all of us will be.
- 34:54Speaker 2: September 7th because 9th is the Seahawks open on a Wednesday.
- 34:56Speaker 5: Yes, exactly. So we do start Factor Fiction on September 7th.
- 35:00Speaker 2: NFL week one. Yes. Is when it'll start. What did
- 35:05Speaker 2: you think? 49451, what did you think of the Rookie
- 35:07Speaker 2: Talent Show? Usos Samalo, Samalo, the undrafted rookie, nose tackle,
- 35:13Speaker 2: playing No Woman, No Cry on his guitar.
- 35:15Speaker 6: I know.
- 35:16Speaker 2: I had players tell me that was the best rookie
- 35:18Speaker 2: talent show performance. But others told me that Jedarian Price
- 35:20Speaker 2: deadpanning Wagon Wheel was the best because they thought, oh,
- 35:25Speaker 2: what is this? He was very low-key deadpanning singing Wagon Wheel,
- 35:29Speaker 2: which every bar in Nashville plays all the time. And
- 35:33Speaker 2: I love it because it's a great song. But then
- 35:36Speaker 2: Price ditched it mid-song and broke out into a rap,
- 35:38Speaker 2: and everybody sang along with him to that, too. And
- 35:42Speaker 2: a lot of people said that that was the coolest
- 35:44Speaker 2: performance they thought was the best one. And then the
- 35:46Speaker 2: Veterans Leadership Council that Mike McDonald used to get the
- 35:48Speaker 2: operation faster in offense and defense. You saw all the
- 35:51Speaker 2: veterans in there talking about getting better. Sam Darnold getting
- 35:54Speaker 2: into the quarterback's room saying, this is on me. That
- 35:57Speaker 2: was another example of the leadership of Mike McDonald. So
- 36:00Speaker 2: was the vulnerability he showed talking about OJ Brignance, his mentor,
- 36:07Speaker 2: his guy that he relied on when he was a
- 36:10Speaker 2: Ravens assistant, 19 years battling ALS. He died last week.
- 36:14Speaker 2: And you saw a side of a leader that you
- 36:16Speaker 2: don't often see. I mean, that is vulnerability. That is empathy.
- 36:22Speaker 2: That makes leadership really effective when you can be that
- 36:24Speaker 2: vulnerable with the guys you're leading. Mike McDonald getting choked
- 36:28Speaker 2: up talking about OJ Brignance last night, he saw it
- 36:31Speaker 2: on that episode. 49451, the Common Dodge text line. We'll
- 36:34Speaker 2: be back at 1130. Your reaction to all of that.
- 36:36Speaker 2: To the Mariners, are they back? Up next, we're going
- 36:39Speaker 2: to talk about Byron Murphy. The Seahawks have a new
- 36:41Speaker 2: pass rush plan for him. Man, does Jaron Reed love
- 36:45Speaker 2: him some Byron Murphy. He thinks he's overlooked, disrespected, but
- 36:49Speaker 2: he'll eventually get his. They all know what his is,
- 36:51Speaker 2: and it's Jalen Carter's contract the Eagles just signed as
- 36:54Speaker 2: a benchmark. We'll talk about all that next. 11 o'clock,
- 36:57Speaker 2: Fire on Logi on 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back. Greg Bell,
- 37:20Speaker 2: Justin McIntyre with you as we are every weekday, 10
- 37:22Speaker 2: to noon here on 93.3 KJR FM. Farhan Lalji of
- 37:25Speaker 2: TSN Canada just got back from the Chiefs training camp.
- 37:27Speaker 2: He'll tell us all about what Kenneth Walker looks like
- 37:30Speaker 2: in a Chiefs uniform coming up at 11 o'clock. Coming
- 37:33Speaker 2: up right now, Byron Murphy. The Seahawks have a new
- 37:36Speaker 2: pass rush planned for him this year. You're going to
- 37:39Speaker 2: hear him talk about that, but first you're going to
- 37:41Speaker 2: hear about Jaron Reed's gushing again about Byron Murphy entering
- 37:48Speaker 2: his third NFL season. Jaren Reed talking to me off
- 37:51Speaker 2: the field just after off the field in the practice
- 37:53Speaker 2: in Tennessee on Friday.
- 37:55Speaker 10: The way he plays the game, period, is top tier
- 37:58Speaker 10: to none. I don't think he gets the respect he
- 38:01Speaker 10: deserves in his league yet, man.
- 38:02Speaker 8: I don't know why.
- 38:03Speaker 10: But guys around his league, all the PFF and whoever,
- 38:08Speaker 10: what's his name, Adam Sheffield, I just feel like he
- 38:11Speaker 10: needs the respect. He's definitely– Top two, in my opinion,
- 38:15Speaker 10: I'm always boosting my guys. I think him and Leo
- 38:17Speaker 10: are two of the best defensive tacklers in the league, man.
- 38:19Speaker 10: The way that he plays double teams, the way he
- 38:21Speaker 10: goes and rushes the passer, I don't think– nobody really
- 38:24Speaker 10: looks at it because we're inside. Nobody really understands how
- 38:27Speaker 10: hard that is unless you're playing the game, you know.
- 38:30Speaker 10: And just the way he takes about it, he doesn't complain.
- 38:32Speaker 10: He doesn't say anything. He just works, works, works all
- 38:36Speaker 10: day long, man. And I just keep telling him every time,
- 38:38Speaker 10: you know, don't pay attention to it. You know, you
- 38:40Speaker 10: can't pay attention to it because that's a popularity contest,
- 38:43Speaker 10: you know. It's all people's opinions, but us in the
- 38:46Speaker 10: football world, we know. And he's going to get what
- 38:48Speaker 10: he deserves one day. It could be today, tomorrow, year
- 38:52Speaker 10: from now, two years from now, whoever knows, you know.
- 38:54Speaker 10: I truly think he's going to get all the accolades
- 38:57Speaker 10: and all the respect he deserves, man. I just tell
- 38:59Speaker 10: him to keep his head down and keep working.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Jaren, tell me how difficult it is to drop to
- 39:03Speaker 2: a knee and have two 300-plus pound guys blocking you,
- 39:06Speaker 2: yet he gets up and splits them.
- 39:07Speaker 10: So, believe it or not, it kind of makes it
- 39:09Speaker 10: easier when you drop to a knee because you have
- 39:12Speaker 10: kind of like more leverage. It's kind of a leverage thing,
- 39:16Speaker 10: you know, kind of like in wrestling, the lower man wins. So,
- 39:20Speaker 10: I mean, it just kind of makes it for the
- 39:22Speaker 10: O-line for a reason, right?
- 39:23Speaker 8: They don't want to go that low.
- 39:25Speaker 10: So, you know, it's a change up sometimes because a
- 39:27Speaker 10: lot of guys I used to weigh bigger guys and
- 39:29Speaker 10: you know, they could just roll on and stand them
- 39:31Speaker 10: up with him. You know, he has this ability to
- 39:34Speaker 10: do the drop knee technique and bounce up. I mean,
- 39:37Speaker 10: that's stuff that has been coached for a long time.
- 39:39Speaker 10: You really see people.
- 39:40Speaker 8: Use it, but. You know, he's a dozen and a dime,
- 39:43Speaker 8: a dime and a dozen, if I said it right.
- 39:44Speaker 2: You did. Why is that? Why do coaches coach it
- 39:48Speaker 2: but players don't do it?
- 39:50Speaker 10: They give you all the type of tools to use
- 39:52Speaker 10: in playing. There's all different ways to play blocks, you know.
- 39:55Speaker 10: And some people take it, some people don't. You know,
- 39:58Speaker 10: it's all on the player. So it's an instinct thing.
- 40:01Speaker 10: You can coach it. You can teach it. But the
- 40:04Speaker 10: player has to do it. So, you know, it's an
- 40:05Speaker 10: instinct thing.
- 40:07Speaker 2: That was Jaron Reed to me on Friday at the
- 40:10Speaker 2: joint practice right off the field in Nashville, Tennessee, the
- 40:12Speaker 2: Seahawks had with the Titans. And what stuck out to
- 40:15Speaker 2: me is he said he's going to get what he deserves,
- 40:16Speaker 2: whether it's today, tomorrow, next year. He knows, every defensive
- 40:20Speaker 2: lineman that's in the sport from high school to NFL
- 40:23Speaker 2: knows that Jalen Carter just signed the largest contract for
- 40:26Speaker 2: a defensive tackle in NFL history a few weeks ago,
- 40:29Speaker 2: last month, with the Philadelphia Eagles, drafted a year before
- 40:33Speaker 2: Byron Murphy. As Byron Murphy's just 23 years old, He
- 40:36Speaker 2: knows what Jalen Carter is getting, $ 150- plus million contract from
- 40:41Speaker 2: the Eagles. So yesterday, Byron Murphy had his press conference
- 40:46Speaker 2: after practice, and in the middle of this talk, I
- 40:49Speaker 2: tried to ask him about that, and you might hear
- 40:51Speaker 2: from the background the choice of the general manager of
- 40:54Speaker 2: the Seahawks.
- 40:55Speaker 4: For those of you guys that aren't playing in the preseason,
- 40:58Speaker 4: what do you have to do to get ready? Like,
- 41:00Speaker 4: does it feel like college again, like where you're going
- 41:01Speaker 4: out in game one where you don't.
- 41:03Speaker 8: Have somebody else.
- 41:03Speaker 2: You played in the lead-up to it?
- 41:04Speaker 4: Kind of how do you manage that and what's different
- 41:06Speaker 4: about trying to get ready?
- 41:08Speaker 11: I'd say really just, like, we know we're not playing,
- 41:12Speaker 11: but attacking the game day like we are playing, you know. Also, too,
- 41:16Speaker 11: just taking real mental reps, you know, You know, mental reps,
- 41:22Speaker 11: you know, watching film, just things like that, like you're
- 41:25Speaker 11: just getting prepared for a game. So you're really just
- 41:28Speaker 11: being a pro for real.
- 41:29Speaker 2: Your coach sort of expects more pass productivity in the
- 41:33Speaker 2: pass rush from you this year. What does that mean
- 41:35Speaker 2: to you? What does that look like? Just me rushing.
- 41:38Speaker 11: That's what it's going to look like, just me rushing,
- 41:40Speaker 11: getting to the quarterback, but also, too, just working with
- 41:42Speaker 11: the guys around me to get to the quarterback.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Is that more opportunities up and down the line? What
- 41:47Speaker 2: have you noticed already that maybe.
- 41:48Speaker 8: Didn't come around?
- 41:50Speaker 11: I'm getting opportunities playing at rushing from the three, a
- 41:55Speaker 11: couple lower rushes here and there, also two rushing from
- 41:58Speaker 11: the nose. So really just being all around and taking
- 42:02Speaker 11: every opportunity they give me.
- 42:04Speaker 2: You're still just getting started, but you saw what Jalen
- 42:06Speaker 2: Carter got. You have to notice the defensive tackle marker.
- 42:09Speaker 2: What do you think of that and where do your
- 42:11Speaker 2: goals go?
- 42:12Speaker 8: Wow, show off.
- 42:16Speaker 11: It's pretty cool to see, but I'm not really worried
- 42:19Speaker 11: about that right now. I'm just focusing on me, focusing
- 42:26Speaker 11: on what's happening right now as far as training camp
- 42:29Speaker 11: and just going into the season.
- 42:30Speaker 9: You guys have a lot of tenure plus vets in
- 42:34Speaker 9: defensive line and outside linebackers. For still relatively young player
- 42:38Speaker 9: and coming up last year, what have those guys made
- 42:40Speaker 9: you to have all those veterans?
- 42:41Speaker 8: They've been a lot to me, man.
- 42:42Speaker 11: I've learned a lot of ball over the last three
- 42:44Speaker 11: years being with these guys. I feel like Leo, Jay Reed, Law,
- 42:51Speaker 11: they just helped me take my game to a whole
- 42:53Speaker 11: other level. So having them guys, you know, give me
- 42:56Speaker 11: a lot of confidence in my play. And just the ability,
- 43:03Speaker 11: you know, to go play free and not to worry
- 43:04Speaker 11: about nothing because I know they got my back and
- 43:05Speaker 11: I got theirs.
- 43:06Speaker 9: Do you ever give them a hard time about being
- 43:07Speaker 9: like the older guys in the group or anything?
- 43:09Speaker 2: Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah.
- 43:12Speaker 4: How big a difference is it trying to rush from
- 43:14Speaker 4: the nose and the free tech for people that don't
- 43:17Speaker 4: understand the difference? What fundamentally changes in that role for
- 43:20Speaker 4: you when you're in the different spots?
- 43:22Speaker 11: Well, at the three, you know, you got a lot
- 43:24Speaker 11: of space. So you got a lot more opportunities, you know,
- 43:28Speaker 11: you can win and be. Winning the B gap. You
- 43:32Speaker 11: can win B to A. You know, you can just
- 43:35Speaker 11: mix it up, you know, from a three. But from
- 43:36Speaker 11: a nose standpoint, man, it's pretty hard because, you know,
- 43:40Speaker 11: you got the center and the guard right there, so
- 43:42Speaker 11: you're pretty much rushing two, really. You hardly get any
- 43:45Speaker 11: one-on-ones when you're rushing at the nose. So, man, it's
- 43:49Speaker 11: a bit difficult. You know, you got to be tight
- 43:51Speaker 11: with your rushes, have your hands ready, you know, when
- 43:54Speaker 11: you're at the nose position. And then also, too, everything
- 43:57Speaker 11: just happens quicker at the nose, by the way. it's
- 44:01Speaker 11: pretty challenging, but I'm going to find a way and
- 44:04Speaker 11: manage to get the job done.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Byron Murphy talking yesterday about pass rushing more as a
- 44:09Speaker 2: three-technique defensive tackle. That's outside shoulder of the guard. He
- 44:12Speaker 2: was a nose tackle mostly as a freshman, as a
- 44:15Speaker 2: rookie in 2024 as a first-round pick. He only played 49%
- 44:18Speaker 2: of the snaps that year. He got only a half sack.
- 44:21Speaker 2: Last year, McDonald made it a goal in the early
- 44:23Speaker 2: in the season to get him more reps in the
- 44:24Speaker 2: pass rush game, and he did. He played 70% of
- 44:28Speaker 2: snaps overall, from 49% to 70%. And his pass rush
- 44:31Speaker 2: went from half a sack to seven sacks. Mike McDonald
- 44:34Speaker 2: said early in camp he thinks the pass production for
- 44:36Speaker 2: Murphy is going to go higher this year. Higher would
- 44:39Speaker 2: mean like double-digit sacks. We're talking all pro level for
- 44:43Speaker 2: an interior defensive tackle. And now he's going to do
- 44:47Speaker 2: it from a further outside. I've seen him as a
- 44:50Speaker 2: five technique outside of the guard between the guard tackle.
- 44:52Speaker 2: I've seen him sometimes as a defensive end lining up
- 44:55Speaker 2: in practices. But more three technique, he says, is going
- 44:57Speaker 2: to be better for him to get more one-on-one opportunities
- 45:02Speaker 2: and quicker into the backfield than he does when he's
- 45:05Speaker 2: often double-teamed by a guard in the center. And then
- 45:07Speaker 2: there's the run defense and a double-team that he just
- 45:09Speaker 2: takes on with the Turkish kettlebell move that is just amazing.
- 45:13Speaker 2: One knee to the ground, raising up. If you missed
- 45:16Speaker 2: that on Byron Murphy, you can hear it on the
- 45:18Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app or 93KJR. com. Greg Bell Show podcast page. Up next,
- 45:24Speaker 2: Farhan Lalji, TSN Canada, talking about the Kansas City Chiefs
- 45:28Speaker 2: camp he just went to and a bunch of other
- 45:30Speaker 2: things around the NFL. Kenneth Walker as a chief, what
- 45:32Speaker 2: he'd look like, how they're using him. Farhan tells us
- 45:35Speaker 2: next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 45:56Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Runnels Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 46:00Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 46:02Speaker 2: Hi, good morning.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Happy Wednesday.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Thanks for listening. Headlines are brought to you by Frost Brewed,
- 46:06Speaker 2: Cora's Light Shoes Chill, George Kirby, 7-2, 3rds innings, 9 strikeouts,
- 46:11Speaker 2: allowing just one run to the Phillies. Kyle Raleigh homered
- 46:14Speaker 2: for the 4th consecutive at bat. Josh Naylor, go-ahead single.
- 46:17Speaker 2: In the bottom of the sixth, sent the Mariners to
- 46:19Speaker 2: a 4-3-4-1 win over Philadelphia. Series win over a playoff-bound
- 46:24Speaker 2: team that had won nine straight before they got into
- 46:27Speaker 2: the yard in Soto on Monday. Two and a half back,
- 46:30Speaker 2: the M's are from first place. Trash cans in the
- 46:33Speaker 2: AL West and 29 games left. This afternoon is one
- 46:36Speaker 2: of them, the series finale at the yard in Soto.
- 46:38Speaker 2: All eyes on Brian Wu starting today after getting pushed
- 46:41Speaker 2: back twice because of shoulder tightness. J.P. Crawford's back on
- 46:44Speaker 2: the team off the injured list. Started at third base
- 46:47Speaker 2: last night. Plan is, according to Ryan Divish of the
- 46:49Speaker 2: Seattle Times, is that Crawford's going to go to shortstop
- 46:52Speaker 2: when Brendan Donovan comes off the concussion list he's on
- 46:55Speaker 2: until at least the middle of the weekend series at Toronto.
- 46:59Speaker 2: It looks like a six-man piggyback rotation's coming back. Now
- 47:02Speaker 2: that Kate Anderson is up from AA Arkansas, and they're
- 47:05Speaker 2: going to keep Bryce Miller in the rotation for now,
- 47:07Speaker 2: it sounds like. Seahawks return from Nashville to practice in
- 47:10Speaker 2: Renton yesterday. They put Bud Clark and Mason Richmond on
- 47:13Speaker 2: season-ending injured reserve. You go on IR in the preseason,
- 47:15Speaker 2: your season is over. Parker Kirst with the broken ankle.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Mason Richmond with a right leg injury, both in the
- 47:21Speaker 2: preseason game at Tennessee on Sunday night. That's three guys
- 47:24Speaker 2: on IR in four days, counting Jake Bobo with his
- 47:26Speaker 2: ACL tear from the joint practice Friday in Nashville. Nick Emanwuri,
- 47:31Speaker 2: second consecutive practice in cleats, though again he was running
- 47:33Speaker 2: on the side, not in a jersey. Jervon Diggs was
- 47:35Speaker 2: full go, trying to ramp up quickly as a new cornerback.
- 47:39Speaker 2: Jadarian Price, full go. Price, the first-round pick, is not
- 47:41Speaker 2: going to play on Friday night. None of the 22
- 47:43Speaker 2: starters are when the Seahawks and Chiefs end the preseason.
- 47:46Speaker 2: And Arrowhead, I'll be there for KJR and the News Tribune.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Fourth Hard Knocks episode we discussed was aired last night.
- 47:52Speaker 2: If you haven't seen it, it'll air again on HBO
- 47:55Speaker 2: and HBO Max. Seahawks Brasser in Atlanta. NFL special owners
- 48:00Speaker 2: meeting today to vote on the sale of the Seahawks
- 48:02Speaker 2: to the Kozla family for $ 9. 612 billion. I'm told that's
- 48:06Speaker 2: going to be a short meeting. We may find out
- 48:08Speaker 2: about it early this afternoon. But then they won't officially
- 48:12Speaker 2: become owners until the bank clears that $ 9. 6 billion. It's
- 48:14Speaker 2: not like just plopping down a $ 5 bill at the
- 48:17Speaker 2: gas station. It takes a little longer than that for
- 48:18Speaker 2: $ 9. 6 billion. Sounders officially made their acquisition of sporting KC
- 48:24Speaker 2: star Dejan Jolovic as the new designated player for Seattle.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Our friend Nico Moreno, Sounder at Heart, first to report
- 48:30Speaker 2: that the Sounders worked a two-and-a-half-year extension for Albert Rushneck.
- 48:34Speaker 2: to drop his money below the designated player threshold in
- 48:37Speaker 2: order to add Jelovic, who has eight goals in 20
- 48:40Speaker 2: matches for KC. New York Giants wide receiver Calvin Austin III,
- 48:44Speaker 2: formerly the Steelers, is going to miss the upcoming season
- 48:46Speaker 2: with a torn ACL in his right knee. And the
- 48:48Speaker 2: SEC is joining the Big Ten and saying, no way,
- 48:51Speaker 2: if you have an NFL contract or if you've been
- 48:53Speaker 2: on an NFL roster, you aren't playing for us. Same
- 48:57Speaker 2: goes for WNBA or NBA players as well. Welcome back.
- 49:08Speaker 8: I'm Dave Bell.
- 49:09Speaker 2: This is the Macintyre Weekly on 93.3 KJRFM. And now
- 49:12Speaker 2: it's time for the fan favorite. Everyone clamors for Farhan Lalji.
- 49:15Speaker 2: I get him in person this time. TSN had a
- 49:18Speaker 2: Canada NFL writer, NFL reporter, and host all over football
- 49:25Speaker 2: for TSN in Canada. Hello, sir. Good to see you
- 49:27Speaker 2: in person.
- 49:28Speaker 8: Things are good. If only people knew our setup. Yeah, exactly.
- 49:30Speaker 8: And you can't call me a writer because I can
- 49:32Speaker 8: barely read, let alone write.
- 49:33Speaker 6: Okay.
- 49:33Speaker 3: Report it.
- 49:34Speaker 8: I can only read your stuff and that's it.
- 49:37Speaker 2: We're here at Seahawks headquarters right before practice. You were
- 49:40Speaker 2: at Chiefs camp.
- 49:41Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Saw Kenneth Walker in red, which is jarring to Seahawks fans.
- 49:45Speaker 2: What did you notice about Kenneth Walker in the Chiefs?
- 49:48Speaker 12: I thought he looked awesome, but it's training camp, right? And,
- 49:51Speaker 12: you know, he had that spring in his step. Like
- 49:53Speaker 12: you could see just that bounce, that explosiveness. And you
- 49:56Speaker 12: could also see just how they were trying to use him,
- 49:58Speaker 12: which was in every which way. You know, when you
- 50:00Speaker 12: look at Andy Reid a couple of years ago, he
- 50:03Speaker 12: loves the screen game. Their screen game last year was
- 50:05Speaker 12: virtually dead. And there was a lot of problems with
- 50:07Speaker 12: what they were doing offensively. But now, all of a sudden,
- 50:10Speaker 12: they can bring the screen game back with Walker. They
- 50:12Speaker 12: had him out of the backfield. You could just see
- 50:15Speaker 12: Mahomes trying to get comfortable with him in a lot
- 50:17Speaker 12: of different areas.
- 50:17Speaker 8: So that was the one thing.
- 50:19Speaker 12: And then one of the storylines was kind of a
- 50:22Speaker 12: byproduct of what happened here was that people were concerned
- 50:25Speaker 12: as to whether or not this guy was on every
- 50:26Speaker 12: down back.
- 50:27Speaker 8: I think people in Seattle weren't sure that he was. Right.
- 50:29Speaker 12: And I think he wants to prove that he can be.
- 50:31Speaker 12: And he's talked about that publicly and in Kansas City.
- 50:34Speaker 12: I think they really, really want to lean on him
- 50:35Speaker 12: in the run game. But, you know, can he last
- 50:37Speaker 12: 17 games if they do that? And already we're dealing
- 50:40Speaker 12: with a bit of an injury because he's not got
- 50:41Speaker 12: a foot tweak that's kept him out of practice here
- 50:43Speaker 12: on Tuesday. So, you know, they're going to have to
- 50:47Speaker 12: find some help in the backfield. Like he needs, it
- 50:50Speaker 12: doesn't need to be the divide that was last year
- 50:52Speaker 12: with Charbonnet where it was virtually even. But they need
- 50:54Speaker 12: somebody to take 30% of the carries, in my opinion.
- 50:57Speaker 2: Do they have somebody there that can do that?
- 50:58Speaker 12: Yeah, there was a couple of guys, young players that
- 51:02Speaker 12: came through camp. Emmitt Johnson was one that was making
- 51:06Speaker 12: a lot of noise. But in the first preseason game,
- 51:08Speaker 12: he just kind of looked ordinary. But they liked what
- 51:09Speaker 12: they've seen in practice. And you can only read so
- 51:12Speaker 12: much into a preseason game. But, you know, it's been
- 51:16Speaker 12: a long time since they've had a 1,000-yard back. And
- 51:18Speaker 12: he wants to be that guy that can break it.
- 51:20Speaker 12: So I think one thing with Andy Reid is he's
- 51:22Speaker 12: not afraid– to kind of see exactly what a back
- 51:24Speaker 12: does well and give him a small role in that area.
- 51:27Speaker 6: Right.
- 51:27Speaker 8: Uh, but it's, it's a rebuild in terms of their
- 51:29Speaker 8: running back room altogether.
- 51:31Speaker 2: So Kenneth Walker, probably 70% or more of the carries,
- 51:36Speaker 2: but maybe even the snaps, they make them a third
- 51:37Speaker 2: down back too.
- 51:39Speaker 8: Yeah, I think so. I think they want to use
- 51:40Speaker 8: them in every situation.
- 51:41Speaker 12: And especially if they want to run screens on third
- 51:43Speaker 12: down and find ways to do that, you know, um,
- 51:46Speaker 12: I don't think they're going to limit what they believe
- 51:48Speaker 12: he can do. The question is going to be whether
- 51:50Speaker 12: or not they want to limit how much they think
- 51:52Speaker 12: he can do it, right, in terms of managing him.
- 51:54Speaker 12: And I just think that's smart football and smart coaching.
- 51:56Speaker 12: But when you invest that much, you kind of feel
- 51:59Speaker 12: the need to get something out of that investment, right?
- 52:02Speaker 12: So I'll be very interested to see what their usage
- 52:06Speaker 12: of him is in the first month of the season
- 52:09Speaker 12: because I know they're going to want to lean on
- 52:10Speaker 12: him late in the season if he's healthy.
- 52:12Speaker 2: Finalology, TSN Canada is going to be in Arrowhead Stadium
- 52:15Speaker 2: for the opening Monday night game the Chiefs have, if
- 52:17Speaker 2: I'm not mistaken, on September the 14th or whatever it is.
- 52:23Speaker 2: Did you see him split out or going down the
- 52:25Speaker 2: field like we saw here in Seattle?
- 52:27Speaker 12: Absolutely, yeah. They ran him out of the backfield deep
- 52:29Speaker 12: down the sideline. They lined him up outside. Didn't see
- 52:33Speaker 12: him lined up in the slot a ton, but he
- 52:35Speaker 12: was outside and they weren't afraid to throw to him
- 52:37Speaker 12: in that situation.
- 52:38Speaker 8: So they just kind of want to push the envelope.
- 52:40Speaker 8: And to be honest.
- 52:42Speaker 12: Kansas City, I'm concerned not about Patrick Mahomes, but about
- 52:45Speaker 12: everybody else in their pass game. Because Rasheed Rice does
- 52:48Speaker 12: not look like that guy. Now, there's still some time
- 52:50Speaker 12: to figure it out, but wasn't separating. He had the
- 52:54Speaker 12: legal situation. He was in jail for 30 days after
- 52:56Speaker 12: he got to scope. So now you're trying to rehab
- 52:58Speaker 12: that way, and then you all of a sudden walk
- 53:00Speaker 12: into training camp. He doesn't look like he can be
- 53:02Speaker 12: a wide receiver one. And then they've got Isaiah Worthy there.
- 53:04Speaker 12: We'll see how much more he can do in terms
- 53:07Speaker 12: of just being a vertical stretch guy. Cyrus Allen was
- 53:11Speaker 12: a young receiver that's been a draft pick this year
- 53:13Speaker 12: that has developed a real chemistry with Mahomes they you
- 53:17Speaker 12: know they liked what they've seen from him average in
- 53:18Speaker 12: the preseason but in practice he looks really good Taequann
- 53:21Speaker 12: Thornton's there as well and then Kelsey just kind of
- 53:23Speaker 12: looks okay right so because of that I think they're
- 53:25Speaker 12: going to feel the need to try to lean on
- 53:27Speaker 12: Walker more in multiple ways because he looked great like
- 53:30Speaker 12: he looked the part but again early stages of training camp.
- 53:34Speaker 2: Kelsey full go is he yeah yeah he went full
- 53:37Speaker 2: absolutely the guys that were.
- 53:40Speaker 12: Offensively, there were no holdbacks in that regard. Kelsey was
- 53:43Speaker 12: getting an 11-on-11 reps in a padded practice that I saw.
- 53:48Speaker 12: Just defensively, they're trying to work through some things. Their
- 53:51Speaker 12: top cornerback, Munsur Delaney, who theoretically is going to be
- 53:54Speaker 12: the Trent McDuffie replacement. The day I was there was
- 53:57Speaker 12: his first day back practicing. He'd been out for a
- 53:59Speaker 12: couple of weeks dealing with, I want to say a knee,
- 54:02Speaker 12: but I'm not positive what it was. He was out,
- 54:05Speaker 12: and he's a real important part to what they're doing.
- 54:07Speaker 12: And Legere needs another guy that's older, trying to manage injuries,
- 54:11Speaker 12: but they need to squeeze out a season out of
- 54:13Speaker 12: him because, you.
- 54:14Speaker 8: Know, you lose both your top two corners.
- 54:17Speaker 12: But offensively, everybody was participating, including Rice, who didn't look
- 54:21Speaker 12: good while participating.
- 54:23Speaker 2: They're at St. Joe's, Missouri, right? So that's an old-school
- 54:26Speaker 2: training camp environment. What is that like? Very few NFL
- 54:29Speaker 2: teams have a college campus away from team facility training
- 54:32Speaker 2: camp anymore.
- 54:33Speaker 12: Yeah, you know, and it's a Division II school, so,
- 54:34Speaker 12: you know, like not everything is palatial. I loved it
- 54:37Speaker 12: from a media perspective, the way they were set up there.
- 54:40Speaker 12: They kind of had an.
- 54:40Speaker 8: Elevated area.
- 54:43Speaker 12: Behind the end zone and multiple fields and multiple shooting periods.
- 54:46Speaker 12: So it was great access to kind of look at everything.
- 54:50Speaker 12: But yeah, I mean, lots of fans, lots of interest.
- 54:53Speaker 12: People want to do that because it gives them the
- 54:56Speaker 12: dorms and it gives you that kind of setup and
- 54:58Speaker 12: you allow for a level of team building and things
- 55:02Speaker 12: like that. So we didn't get to look at those facilities,
- 55:03Speaker 12: but just in terms of the areas where the coaches
- 55:06Speaker 12: were set up where, you know, fans and media were like,
- 55:10Speaker 12: it was a really good, good setup.
- 55:11Speaker 8: I liked it.
- 55:12Speaker 2: You were at Broncos camp too. What stood out to
- 55:14Speaker 2: you there from the team that went to the playoffs
- 55:16Speaker 2: and then crashed and burned?
- 55:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:18Speaker 12: You know, like for me, they have a lot of this,
- 55:21Speaker 12: they're singing from the same songbook, the Seahawks are right.
- 55:23Speaker 12: Continuity 20 of 22 starters are back for them. And
- 55:27Speaker 12: all of their offensive starters are back. Plus they've added
- 55:29Speaker 12: Jalen Waddle to that. And then defensively, they've got nine
- 55:32Speaker 12: of 11 back, but you know, neither of the players
- 55:34Speaker 12: they lost were key guys. So, I think they're still
- 55:36Speaker 12: going to try to manufacture a pass rush, which was
- 55:39Speaker 12: a common theme for a number of the teams that
- 55:40Speaker 12: I saw. But, you know, when you look at them offensively,
- 55:45Speaker 12: they're going to ask more of Bo Nix, right? Because
- 55:47Speaker 12: like he led the league last year in attempts. I
- 55:50Speaker 12: think he had 612 attempts, but part of that was
- 55:52Speaker 12: because of the fact that they set an NFL record
- 55:54Speaker 12: with 12 come from behind victories. So you're in that mode,
- 55:56Speaker 12: but his accuracy needs to improve. His deep ball completion
- 56:00Speaker 12: percentage needs to improve. They didn't push him down the field.
- 56:02Speaker 12: I think his uh, yards per attempt last year was
- 56:05Speaker 12: in the bottom third, if not the bottom five of
- 56:07Speaker 12: the league. So they need more from him because this
- 56:09Speaker 12: is the year they've got to make that decision, right?
- 56:11Speaker 12: Because after this year they can renegotiate them to a
- 56:13Speaker 12: longterm extension. So, um, he's 25 and 11 as a starter.
- 56:17Speaker 12: So that's more than any of the other six quarterbacks
- 56:20Speaker 12: or him plus five, including Michael Penix that were drafted
- 56:24Speaker 12: two years ago.
- 56:24Speaker 8: Um, in a great.
- 56:26Speaker 12: Situation to have success with such a good defense and
- 56:28Speaker 12: a coach that believes in him. But, um, If you're
- 56:31Speaker 12: going to make that decision to give him the bag,
- 56:33Speaker 12: he better show you more that you're winning because of him,
- 56:36Speaker 12: not with him just being a game manager.
- 56:38Speaker 8: But when you look at that, as something Seattle.
- 56:41Speaker 12: Fans would appreciate, when you think of that situation that
- 56:44Speaker 12: Sean Payton walked into with the salary that Russell Wilson
- 56:48Speaker 12: was owed and then the buyout that he was owed
- 56:50Speaker 12: and then the draft capital that was lost, and you
- 56:53Speaker 12: walk into that situation, you're like, all right, we're going
- 56:55Speaker 12: to try with a rookie quarterback because we really have
- 56:57Speaker 12: no choice. And for what he's done the last two seasons,
- 56:59Speaker 12: amazing stuff.
- 57:01Speaker 2: You went to Cowboys, you went to Rams, you went
- 57:02Speaker 2: to Chargers, you went to 49ers. What stood out to you?
- 57:06Speaker 2: What surprised of all the camps you've been to and
- 57:09Speaker 2: who of any of those? The Rams jump out right
- 57:12Speaker 2: away as the Seahawks' main challenger, but could the Cowboys
- 57:15Speaker 2: rise up? We've talked about the 49ers' injury issues. What
- 57:18Speaker 2: stood out to you of all the camp stops you went?
- 57:20Speaker 2: What surprised you?
- 57:20Speaker 8: Managing of injuries by everybody. It's funny.
- 57:23Speaker 12: I was just talking to a friend of mine, Chris Brummel,
- 57:25Speaker 12: with the Kraken, and we just talked about what training
- 57:27Speaker 12: camp used to look like in hockey. Versus now, you know,
- 57:29Speaker 12: the training camp's literally a weekend. And preseason's four games
- 57:33Speaker 12: now in the NHL, whereas before, I mean, camp was
- 57:36Speaker 12: two weeks.
- 57:36Speaker 8: Preseason was three weeks. It was epic. And we see
- 57:39Speaker 8: a little bit of that in football too, right?
- 57:40Speaker 12: That preseason's from four to three games now. You know,
- 57:44Speaker 12: we see the joint practices for some teams that's really
- 57:47Speaker 12: valuable because it's a way to kind of manage tempo
- 57:50Speaker 12: and manage injuries a little bit and still be able
- 57:52Speaker 12: to evaluate.
- 57:53Speaker 8: So, yeah.
- 57:54Speaker 12: You know, going to the Rams and the day I
- 57:56Speaker 12: was there, there was no Matt Stafford. He was getting
- 58:00Speaker 12: every second day off. No Devontae Adams. Miles Garrett had
- 58:03Speaker 12: missed five days, came out and just did a bit
- 58:05Speaker 12: of individual and said, I'm good. You know, you go
- 58:07Speaker 12: to San Francisco and the injuries that they're dealing with,
- 58:09Speaker 12: it just makes you think of that substation story, right? But,
- 58:12Speaker 12: you know, like I know Kelsey's not practicing and they're
- 58:15Speaker 12: not talking, sorry, not Kelsey, Kittle. And they're talking about
- 58:17Speaker 12: him potentially being ready day one, which was very much
- 58:20Speaker 12: in doubt before. But Nick Bosa still hasn't done anything yet.
- 58:24Speaker 12: And here's the other thing. I think they're going to
- 58:27Speaker 12: have to put a new category in the NFL injury
- 58:29Speaker 12: report called tightness.
- 58:31Speaker 8: We hear it so much. Every team, tightness. What is that?
- 58:35Speaker 12: But just seeing the management of bodies and injuries throughout.
- 58:38Speaker 12: Because I think coaches are just putting less emphasis on camp.
- 58:41Speaker 12: That mentally, you can understand what's going on. We'll wait
- 58:44Speaker 12: to the season. And we're seeing that even here. The
- 58:48Speaker 12: build-up for Trevon Diggs... It's really more about system than
- 58:52Speaker 12: what he looks like on the field. Can you handle
- 58:54Speaker 12: what we're asking you to do as opposed to are
- 58:56Speaker 12: you still like super fluid and all that kind of stuff, right?
- 58:59Speaker 8: I think that's the bigger concern here is they try
- 59:01Speaker 8: to build him up.
- 59:03Speaker 2: Bigger league picture-wise, what do you think, if anything, the
- 59:06Speaker 2: league does with Jed York and his stupidity in Ohio?
- 59:09Speaker 8: What happened? to Robert Kraft? Yeah.
- 59:13Speaker 2: The charges were dropped. He pled not guilty, so he
- 59:15Speaker 2: never admitted to anything. The charges were dropped, and there's
- 59:17Speaker 2: no punishment.
- 59:18Speaker 12: Well, and I think a lot of that's going to
- 59:20Speaker 12: be part of it here, right? I mean, this is not–
- 59:24Speaker 12: you know, we've seen more egregious offenses. We've seen what
- 59:26Speaker 12: happened to Daniel Snyder. We've seen what's going on with
- 59:28Speaker 12: Jerry Richardson. or went on with Jerry Richardson. So, you know,
- 59:32Speaker 12: when I look at York, I see Robert Kraft just
- 59:35Speaker 12: in terms of what the offense is.
- 59:37Speaker 8: But should you be looking at it in terms of
- 59:39Speaker 8: what Deshaun Watson did? Well, that's it.
- 59:41Speaker 2: The players are held to a different standard than owners,
- 59:43Speaker 2: are they not?
- 59:44Speaker 8: Absolutely, and they shouldn't be.
- 59:45Speaker 12: But that's what happens because ultimately the commissioner works for
- 59:48Speaker 12: the owners and it becomes a bit of a country
- 59:50Speaker 12: club thing. All those owners just look at themselves and say,
- 59:52Speaker 12: what would happen if I did that? And for a
- 59:54Speaker 12: lot of them, probably something has happened in their background
- 59:57Speaker 12: that they probably haven't been caught with, right? So I
- 1:00:01Speaker 12: could see how Goodell would be pressured to step back
- 1:00:04Speaker 12: a little bit, but there's got to be something done.
- 1:00:06Speaker 12: And we'll see how long it takes for the legal
- 1:00:10Speaker 12: process to move if they're going to wait for that
- 1:00:11Speaker 12: to make a decision.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: What do you think, Terry? I'm told Terry Arnold may
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: sign here before the Chiefs preseason in a matter of
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: a day or two. What do you think the league
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: does with him?
- 1:00:21Speaker 8: Do you think he's going on the exempt list?
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: And could you see any possible way to him playing
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: this year?
- 1:00:25Speaker 12: It depends on the legal side of it because the
- 1:00:28Speaker 12: league's not going to let him back while that's still pending.
- 1:00:31Speaker 12: At some point, whether it's charges dropped, whether it goes
- 1:00:34Speaker 12: to court and he gets acquitted, whatever that happens to be,
- 1:00:36Speaker 12: there's no window for him playing until that's resolved. And
- 1:00:41Speaker 12: to be honest, I'm not sure why the Seahawks are
- 1:00:42Speaker 12: anxious to even get him signed. Why would you? Why
- 1:00:44Speaker 12: would you need to pay him? until he's in a
- 1:00:46Speaker 12: position to play for you. Maybe that was part of
- 1:00:48Speaker 12: the arrangement of him taking a one-year minimum salary that
- 1:00:51Speaker 12: you're going to pay me from start to finish because
- 1:00:52Speaker 12: it's not that expensive. So at least they've got him protected.
- 1:00:56Speaker 12: But I don't know. I just don't know how long
- 1:00:58Speaker 12: it's going to take. I mean, eight felony charges. And
- 1:01:01Speaker 12: they sound serious. Now, everybody around him has said, look,
- 1:01:04Speaker 12: that's not who this guy is. And everybody has said
- 1:01:06Speaker 12: the right thing about him coming out of Alabama and
- 1:01:08Speaker 12: all those things. But whether we believe that to be true,
- 1:01:11Speaker 12: people do dumb things even if they're good people. And
- 1:01:16Speaker 12: So I don't know why everyone's in a rush as
- 1:01:19Speaker 12: I look at this thing because there's a process that
- 1:01:20Speaker 12: has to play out.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: See, I think he may get back midseason, possibly, depending
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: on what the legal system does. Okay, I'm going to
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: put you on the spot for a final one. Of
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: all the camps you went to, what's the one surprising thing?
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: When you came home and told your wife or your son, wow,
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: I didn't expect this or this was really cool.
- 1:01:39Speaker 8: Um, that's a good question. I don't, you know, are
- 1:01:41Speaker 8: you talking about like players?
- 1:01:43Speaker 12: Well, like, first of all, I loved the Chiefs camp, like,
- 1:01:47Speaker 12: and for the same reason that we talked about, that
- 1:01:49Speaker 12: it's so rare now that teams go off to camp, right?
- 1:01:52Speaker 12: Like you go to the Cowboys camp and, you know,
- 1:01:56Speaker 12: it's meant to be Disneyland for Cowboys fans in Oxnard
- 1:01:58Speaker 12: and the way the whole thing is set up and
- 1:02:00Speaker 12: the theme park and everything. But honestly, the last couple
- 1:02:02Speaker 12: of years have gone, their crowds have been really down
- 1:02:04Speaker 12: for their camp. but to just see it in Kansas
- 1:02:08Speaker 12: City with that college atmosphere and the people that travel.
- 1:02:12Speaker 12: It's kind of like going to Packers camp. The number
- 1:02:14Speaker 12: of people from around the state that come, even though
- 1:02:16Speaker 12: they have it at their own facility, just to kind
- 1:02:19Speaker 12: of see that vibe in Kansas City.
- 1:02:21Speaker 8: And also for them, I talk about the one injured player,
- 1:02:25Speaker 8: the corner, who was out.
- 1:02:26Speaker 12: They got a couple of young guys that they drafted
- 1:02:28Speaker 12: high on the defensive side of the ball in R.
- 1:02:30Speaker 12: Mason Thomas and Peter Woods, who could be dudes. Like,
- 1:02:33Speaker 12: they really, really popped in practice in the 11-on-11 session.
- 1:02:37Speaker 12: So I'm excited to see how they look. But just
- 1:02:39Speaker 12: the college campus atmosphere, I love it.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: I miss going to Eastern and the dorms in Cheney.
- 1:02:45Speaker 8: They haven't changed at all. Those dorms have not changed
- 1:02:48Speaker 8: at all since the 90s.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: There's still silos right next to Bruce Field. Farhan, we'll
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: be together every week, it sounds like, during the regular season.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: I appreciate it. Good to see you in person.
- 1:02:57Speaker 8: All right, buddy. Say hi to Wendy. That's my sign-off
- 1:02:59Speaker 8: with you every time. I appreciate it.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: That makes me smile. Farhan Nalji, TSN Canada. Going to
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: be our regular contributor to NFL coverage here on 93.3 KJRFM. Yeah,
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: every time he's in Seattle or I'm in Vancouver, Wendy
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: and I are in Vancouver, we go out with Farhan and, yeah.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: I love that. He just dropped his son off at
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: a prep school in Virginia. He's getting... offers all over
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: the place about being a college football quarterback.
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: That's amazing.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: From Linden. Yes, I've been talking about that with him.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: It was cool to meet his son when I was
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: up there for the World Cup in Vancouver. Interesting to
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: hear him talk about Kenneth Walker all over the field
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: in Andy Reid's offense. And we know Reid likes to
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: throw the ball to running backs. And we know that
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: the Seahawks split Kenneth Walker out at times as a
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: pass receiver here in Seattle. The foot issue kept Walker
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: out of practice yesterday is a concern, obviously, at that
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: position with his history. But he's going to get every
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: opportunity to be the full-time component to Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes'
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: passing game in Kansas City. But not Friday night because
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: he's not going to play. I don't know that any
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: Chiefs starters are playing. I know no Seahawks starters are
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: playing in the third and final preseason game. Friday night,
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: 5 p.m. local time on King 5 television. I'll be
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: in Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium for that. The third
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: cornerback situation still to resolve itself. Roster spots to be had.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: Montori Foster's attempt to win an unlikely roster spot. All
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: to be settled on Friday night, the final performance, really,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: until the rosters need to be cut down from 90
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: to 53 players on Sunday. 49451 is the Comodage text line,
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: or talk back on the iHeartRadio app or 933KJR. com. And
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: up next is your chance to be a part of
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: the show when we read back and play back your Input,
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: including the Mariners.
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: Are you a believer?
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: You think they're back? Should the hard knocks have aired?
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: Bud Clark's FaceTime call with his fiancée and his young
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: son after he broke his ankle. He's sitting on a
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: trading table in Tennessee. That and more. The Seahawks, what
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: I'm looking for. Why I asked Byron Murphy a question
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: about how much the market is in defensive tackle. We'll
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: answer all that next on 93.3 KJR FM.
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: And I will always.
- 1:05:43Speaker 9: Believe in the Mariners and we're going to win the
- 1:05:50Speaker 9: World Series.
- 1:05:51Speaker 8: This year. We all know how this is going to go.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: The Mariners play up to their competition, and they sure
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: as hell play down to their competition.
- 1:06:01Speaker 7: I'm not buying any of this.
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: The Mariners, they're going to be three back right now,
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: two and a half back. They're going to finish three,
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: two and a half back.
- 1:06:13Speaker 8: Same old, same old. I'm not buying it.
- 1:06:18Speaker 7: Good morning, yes, I'm in, mostly because of the division
- 1:06:21Speaker 7: we play in, obviously, or else we would have been
- 1:06:24Speaker 7: out of it a while ago. But the fact that
- 1:06:26Speaker 7: Cal's woken up and we're showing other signs of life,
- 1:06:30Speaker 7: frustrating that it's taken us long, but absolutely, especially with
- 1:06:33Speaker 7: the way the schedule shakes out after the Boston series,
- 1:06:38Speaker 7: especially compared to Houston and Texas.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: That first caller was playing... I Will Always Love You
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: singing I Will Always Love You, not quite as well
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: as Whitney Houston. That was written by Dolly Parton. Elvis
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: Presley wanted to buy that song in the 70s and
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: play and record it. And she held out with it
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: and didn't do it and didn't do it. And eventually
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: Whitney Houston performed it and made it a gold record.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: And it was amazing. But Dolly Parton wrote that song.
- 1:07:11Speaker 6: And she presented her with her Grammy or whatever the
- 1:07:14Speaker 6: award was that she got for it.
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: I believe it was.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: If you missed our stop of the show, we started
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: with Dolly Parton's Jolene instead of Return of the Mac.
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: And there's somebody on the text line saying, can you
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: please play your tribute and comments about Dolly Parton again?
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: And you take a break. That was like a slam
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: and a compliment at the same time.
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: Well, if they want to hear you again.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: But they don't want to hear me, but they want
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: to hear that. Remember we talked about her imagination library?
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: Donating 320 million books to kids. How it works is
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: the hospitals where babies are born, for example, in Washington, D.C.,
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: when babies are born in Washington, D.C., the hospital staff
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: suggests that the parents sign up for the Imagination Library
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: program while they're still in the maternity ward. You sign up,
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: you get age-appropriate picture books, and they're sent to your
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: address every month for free. Dolly Parton did this. My
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: wife is in speech communications and she does a ton
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: of research and work in early childhood and reading to
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: your kids when they're babies and infants and the language
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: development and the brain development that just hearing red words
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: from a book does for children. And Dolly Parton did
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: that for 320 million people across the Life of Imagination
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: Library program. That's Just another aspect of how she does
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: what she did. And she's just a legend so far.
- 1:08:49Speaker 5: That's like almost every kid.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: Well, 320 million books. Books, books. I guess you could
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: have multiple books sent to your house, so it maybe
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: wouldn't be 320 million kids. But you're right, 320 million.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: is about the population of our country.
- 1:09:01Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: 49451 is the Tacoma Dodge text line. We read that
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: back every day at this time. A lot of stuff
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: on the Mariners. The 206 says, I keep telling myself
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: I'm done with them, but I keep watching and hoping.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: It sounds like a lot of us. 253 says, I
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: believe the Mariners are in a crappy division. Someone has
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: to win that thing, even if nobody wants to. Even
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: if they make the playoffs, they're not good enough to
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: go anywhere. I don't know about that, as bad as
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: the American League is. And the pitching staff in a
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: short series. You could have Kate Anderson be one of
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: three starters in a five-game series, right?
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: Absolutely could.
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: And then I think that pitching staff could cobble together
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: two other starters that would win you playoff games. They
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: did it last year. It's all about Cal Raleigh to me.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: If he keeps hitting like this, yeah. And if he
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: hits 150, no. I don't know. We'll see. 29 games
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: are left. There is a text line about the Seahawks.
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: I'm trying to find the question here. 425. About Bud Clark. No, no, actually,
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: it was about Byron Murphy.
- 1:10:07Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: And you heard Byron Murphy's press conference. We played it
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: from yesterday, and you heard John Schneider walk up behind
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: me as he was coming off the practice field when
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: I was asking. Let me just tell you how I
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: did what I did, and I'll read back the text.
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: You heard Jaron Reed in our conversation Friday off the
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: edge of the field in Nashville say he's going to
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: get what he deserves, whether it's this year, next year, tomorrow,
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: They know what Jalen Carter got. The record setting. It
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: reset the market for defensive tackles. My question, because Reed
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: had said that, that was going to be my lead
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: to my story. In fact, I wrote the story at
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: thenewstribune.com this morning. It's up there now. And the lead
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: to my story is Jaren Reed off the field gushing
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: about Byron Murphy and then saying he's going to get his.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: He's going to get what he deserves next year, the
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: next day or two, whenever. And so I wanted to
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: ask Murphy if that is a motivation for him.
- 1:10:58Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: And as I was getting out of the words, Jalen Carter's,
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: you've seen Jalen Carter's contract. You know what the now
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: market is for defensive tackles. He smiled and said, yes.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: And before I could really get into any more is
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: when John Schneider walked up behind me and said, whoa, dude,
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: chill out.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: And he did it in a laughing way, but he
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: certainly did it with a purpose. And it was to
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: quelch that whole subject. And it had the chilling effect
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: of Byron Murphy not answering the question after that. He said, yeah,
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: it's cool to see, but I'm focused on now and today.
- 1:11:27Speaker 5: Well, he probably would have said the same thing anyway.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: May have. I know Murphy, though, and he's a new father,
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: and he knows how much the defensive tackle market has
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: changed in the last month. But that was my questioning,
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: and my thinking was that motivation, is that motivating him?
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Because that motivates players in this league. That's what this
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: league's all about. 425 said, that question is why the
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: press has limited access. There's nothing positive for the team
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: that any answer to that question can generate. The latter
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: part of that statement is true. Maybe there isn't anything
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: positive for the team. My job isn't to Extract information
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: that's positive for the team. My job is to portray
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: exactly and report exactly how these guys think, what their
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: motivation is, and behind the scenes, the why to why
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: they do what they do. Why does Byron Murphy bang
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: his head into offensive linemen 70 times a game? He
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: knows what the market is. Is that a motivation? Jaron
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: Reed's talking about it. I was leading my story, so
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: I wanted Byron Murphy's input on it. That's why I
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: asked the question. My job isn't to... Ask questions that
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: will make the Seahawks approve of it and think that
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: make the Seahawks look good. That's what John Boyle and
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: the people that work for the Seahawks do. That's not
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: my job. And when my job sometimes goes different than
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: what the Seahawks want, that's journalism. I'm not a reporter
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: that is a cheerleader for the team. I'm a journalist,
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: independent journalist. who is a different agenda than someone who
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: works for the team. But I get it. It's a
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: Super Bowl champion. Everybody in the market that's a fan
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: of the Seahawks want positive things that the Seahawks approve of.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: And so we tend to be the bad guy if
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: we ask a question that the team doesn't like.
- 1:13:11Speaker 7: Sure.
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: But that is my role. I'm not their friends. It's
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: a professional relationship. I get along with plenty of people
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: in the organization, players, coaches, staffers. But I'm not their
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: buddy and I'm not their employee. There are enough people
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: in the mechanism of an NFL team that can get
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: out the information in the way the team wants done.
- 1:13:31Speaker 5: They usually get it out first.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: And that is not why the press access is limited.
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: The press access is limited because the NFL teams treat
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: themselves with self-importance that even the military doesn't have. I
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: can get more things out of the Pentagon than I
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: can get. I've done it because I've been there. Then
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: I can get out of an NFL team. But I
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: just wanted to– I'm not disagreeing. I understand the fan's perspective.
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: I understand the listener writing that. I understand that people
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: think that way. I also understand that I come off
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: as a bad guy if I ever ask anything that
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: the Seahawks don't like, especially off of the Super Bowl
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: championship season because everyone loves what the Seahawks love. I
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: get it. That's part and parcel of what I do.
- 1:14:11Speaker 6: But it is nice to pull back the curtain so
- 1:14:14Speaker 6: that people understand that part of the job. Yeah.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: Do you want everything only as the Seahawks want it presented?
- 1:14:20Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: We'd never know about anything that they don't want us
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: to know. That's not my job. My job is to
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: write exactly what's happening. And sometimes that's counter to what
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: the Seahawks want. That's true of any team in any sport, actually,
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: college or pro.
- 1:14:35Speaker 6: We have a lot of people writing in that they
- 1:14:37Speaker 6: are recipients of the Imagination Library books.
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: Really?
- 1:14:40Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:14:42Speaker 6: 360 says the Imagination Library was awesome for both of
- 1:14:45Speaker 6: my kids.
- 1:14:46Speaker 5: Every time I went to get to the mail... I
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: went to get the mail. Somebody asked if there was
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: a new book. Absolutely awesome program. We still have many
- 1:14:53Speaker 5: of the books that my kids still ask us to read.
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: Oh, man, that's awesome. That is really awesome. My kids
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: still quote some of the books. They quote Goodnight Moon.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: They quote Herald of Purple Crayon. I read Good Night
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: Moon and Herald of the Purple Crown so many nights
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: in a row to my kids for five years that
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: I memorized. I didn't even need the books. I just
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: sat in the hallway outside both of their rooms in
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: the dark at 11 o'clock and I was exhausted because
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: I hadn't slept in four years. And only when I
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: was on the road and I'd sleep the entire road trip.
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: But I would just sit there and from memory read
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: these books. Like many of them. A dozen or so
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: books I'd read from memory. And if I... This is funny.
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: If I somehow messed up a word or a phrase,
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: my kids, half asleep, would call me on it. Like, no. Daddy,
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: that's not how it goes. Daddy, Harold said this.
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:15:45Speaker 5: Yeah, we had that one, too.
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: Wendy Savoy Bell. Credit her for that. But that's great
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: to hear the Imagination Library. That's really cool. Yes.
- 1:15:52Speaker 6: And the 360 says the Dolly Parton Imagination Library sends
- 1:15:56Speaker 6: one book a month from birth until the child's five.
- 1:15:59Speaker 8: Wow.
- 1:16:01Speaker 6: Wow.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: Imagine the language development that that aids. That's just great.
- 1:16:06Speaker 6: And that's right until they're going into school, into kindergarten, too,
- 1:16:09Speaker 6: where they'll start reading theirs.
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: So they're armed and ready.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: Man, that's great. Yeah. Thanks for that. 253, Michael, not
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: the hugest Dolly fan, but a fan. When I was
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: around three or four, maybe, I went with my mom, dad,
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: and grandmother to see her and Kenny Rogers at the
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: Tacoma Dome. The biggest thing I remember, Dolly kissed me
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: on the cheek as they walked to the stage, and
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: I credit her as the reason why I love women
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: to this day. Things you remember. Yeah, that's true. That's
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: really cool. That's really good. It's good to hear that, too.
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: What a program that is. 320 million books. That's really great.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: All right, real quick, the 253s. So the protocol on
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: Bud Clark. The Hawks training staff initially put the air
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: cast on, and then do they take him to the
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: hospital for surgery? That's a good question. I don't know
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: if he flew home with the team or if he
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: had surgery in Nashville Sunday night. If the leg was
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: stabilized enough by the air cast and the walking boot,
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: I think he went home with the team. The fact
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: that they were putting a walking boot on meant to
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: me that he was about to get on the team
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: bus and go on the plane rather than into an ambulance.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: Why would you walk into the hospital, right?
- 1:17:22Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: So you talk about an uncomfortable flight. We mentioned that yesterday.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: Four and a half, five hours on a charter. Yeah,
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: it's a charter, but still with a broken ankle.
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: That's not a flight, but Clark's going to want to
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: relive or remember. Thanks for the text. Thanks for the question.
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: I'm honestly not combative about the question about why I
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: asked the question of Murphy and why press access is limited.
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: I know people feel that way.
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: You were just explaining.
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: We just have different viewpoints, and I come at it
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: from a completely different– I'm not a fan. I say
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: that all the time.
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: Why did you write that about the Seattle?
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: Well, because I'm not a fan. I don't have pom-poms.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: Ian Furness, I think he's back. Mayor Maple Valley will
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: join us next to say what he's got on the show.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: If you missed our Dolly Parton tribute at the top
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: of the show, go to the iHeartRadio app, 933KJR, or
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: the 933KJR. com website. The Greg Bell Show podcast will be
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: up later. Ian's next on 93.3 KJR FM.
