- 1:01retail anticipating and preparing for the future of
- 1:05shopping introduction. This book provides a glimpse
- 1:09into the retail World in 2034. This book is not just about the
- 1:14future, it's about the now and how if you follow the foundation
- 1:19set in this book, you will be able to position yourselves to
- 1:22stay relevant in a changed and transformed world.
- 1:26I've worked in the technology industry for over 25 years with
- 1:31government's Global financial institutions retailers and
- 1:35organizations that are building the foundation of tomorrow
- 1:39today. However, for me, the path to the
- 1:42Future started in 2013, when to client Partners tiny Orissa
- 1:48huffed and Simon Kettle who were leading Verizon's engagement
- 1:52asked me to meet with the head of Technology at Tescos.
- 1:56The UK's largest retailer and the globe's, second largest
- 2:00retailer at the time and they both warned me.
- 2:03Be careful. This guy doesn't suffer fools
- 2:05lightly so I turned up to a fishbowl executive office.
- 2:10Apprehensive and nervous in well and Garden City.
- 2:13Just on the outskirts of London and the late Tom Cadillac who I
- 2:18later in life. Had the great honor of calling a
- 2:21friend had a vision for transformation at Tescos.
- 2:25The UK's largest retail. He wanted a better data, LED
- 2:29outcome driven environment not just for the sake of Technology
- 2:34sake but a better platform across the business for
- 2:38customers and guests. Tom said to me a lie, I want you
- 2:43to build the store of the feature and for God's sake,
- 2:47don't focus on just the Technologies features and
- 2:50functions of focus on our values.
- 2:54Six months later, and a Consortium of the hottest
- 2:56startups from Silicon Valley and the UK established technology
- 3:01partners of Verizon. And I work, you are checking
- 3:05Verizon's, then CEO and Tesco's. Legendary CIO Mike McNamara.
- 3:11Who went on to transform Target in the US's entire approach and
- 3:16strategy for technology. We check them into a 60,000
- 3:21square foot store just on the outskirts of London and what I
- 3:25didn't know then. But I now know is that I jest or
- 3:28we had just built the first frictionless.
- 3:32Touchless cloud-based shopping experience.
- 3:36You could pick up a product scan and pay via a custom-built at
- 3:39PayPal. Pay for your item and the
- 3:41digital identity that was being used at the time, would then go
- 3:45on to become the UK, government's Federated digital
- 3:48identity. Part of the ecosystem, the
- 3:51clicking collect solution, Opus, buy online, pick up in store
- 3:54solution, would grow to become Q dini who are recently acquired
- 3:59by very net, and a plethora of other Technologies use in 2013.
- 4:05With now, become commonplace during the 2020 plan, demek
- 4:09including social commerce later in my career.
- 4:12I would meet Chris luxford from the Aspire group who also became
- 4:16a dear friend and a mentor. All who helped me understand
- 4:20that the only other way to approach transformation is by
- 4:24focused on the changing business models, and the outcomes that
- 4:28are then being produced. The pandemic sped up
- 4:33transformation across all digital channels, highlighting
- 4:36supply chain weaknesses worldwide.
- 4:39Unfortunately, the current inflationary environment as the
- 4:42upcoming currency, Global interest rate capital and cost
- 4:46of living crisis, will push more consumers to the verge of
- 4:49financial collapse along with the institutions that serve them
- 4:53capital and liquidity will evaporate.
- 4:56Even before the pandemic, it was hard for many brick, and mortar
- 5:00stores to stay open, And customers interested in the
- 5:03products and spaces, but will shopping and retailing return to
- 5:07normal, as if financial crisis expanse, retailers must shape
- 5:13their organizations to generate value, leverage technology to
- 5:16enables tomorrow, smart consumers.
- 5:20Create who you need to be. The current period is one of the
- 5:25exponential structural and financial change in which events
- 5:29are occurring, rapidly, as a result, businesses must be
- 5:33nimble enough to Pivot physically and digitally swiftly
- 5:37and successfully retailers, and Business Leaders need to predict
- 5:41what customers want, what is it likely to happen and what is
- 5:45plausible for them. Then put their retail businesses
- 5:50and Brands to the test against all possible assumptions while
- 5:55driving Innovation and Delight into the customer journey and
- 5:59the path to purchase. Poor physical experiences on a
- 6:03lack of relevance, shuttered, many High Street stores and
- 6:06malls, as consumers, flock to better experiences and more
- 6:10relevance online. Shopping customers will continue
- 6:14to demand immersive shopping experiences provided by
- 6:17augmented reality into the metaverse.
- 6:20We go and sales channels must include virtual and physical
- 6:26reality experiences and fulfillment which already
- 6:30includes Strong will only continue to grow Brands, will
- 6:34enable customers to move from offline to online and
- 6:37personalized experiences that will be demanded by consumers.
- 6:41The current cost of living and financial crisis continues to
- 6:46push contactless customers to shop and expand, e-commerce
- 6:49options, curbside, pickup, and touchless shopping.
- 6:53The global crisis exaggerated, the Divide between non more
- 6:58businesses, such as big box stores and more based retailers,
- 7:03who will survive and move into the future.
- 7:06What did customers really want the experience of searching for
- 7:09different items or the convenience of a One-Stop shop?
- 7:14The pandemic and economic crisis underscored the differences
- 7:18between the wealthiest Shoppers and those who always have to
- 7:21watch what they're spending. It is now spread to the middle
- 7:24class has and will continue to grow causing household budgets
- 7:28to shrink irreversibly over the next decade.
- 7:32It has also taught us how to pay for goods and services
- 7:35differently. Cash is no longer King and
- 7:39touchless and digital payments will continue to bun with the
- 7:42introduction of Of new government back digital
- 7:44currencies. How will our online purchases?
- 7:47Be delivered, consumers, want, rapid and safe.
- 7:50Deliveries, the use of drones autonomous delivery trucks or
- 7:54retail stores simply delivering our packages to US will become
- 7:58commonplace as Ultra. Local AI driven convenience The
- 8:03Echoes of the future are already here of retailers can tap into
- 8:08the communities. They serve and generate an
- 8:10ongoing conversation that is two-way and He base, they may
- 8:14discover that their customers needs have already drastically
- 8:18change. Retailers must change grow and
- 8:21use new strategies and business models along with Technologies
- 8:25and algorithms. So what will the future of
- 8:28retail? It'll be exciting.
- 8:31It will be personalized, L, be adventurous and different yet.
- 8:34Retail shopping will grow as entertainment.
- 8:37The utility of retail will continue to diminish and be
- 8:40automated, but it will be in the operational structure.
- 8:43Retail that will see the most change.
- 8:46Chapter 1 retail in the future. no one could have really
- 8:52predicted the pandemic and no one could have predicted the
- 8:56pandemic would change retail shopping and the supply chain
- 8:59trajectory when Russia invaded Ukraine.
- 9:03Everyone thought that the inflation energy crisis would
- 9:07only challenge businesses operating costs.
- 9:10And not push us further into the fourth.
- 9:12Turning the fourth turning is a concept and book by historians,
- 9:17William Strauss and Neil how that States history repeats
- 9:20itself in four distinct periods. Known as turnings.
- 9:27They, approximately last 20 years each, a turning is a
- 9:31different part of a civilizations life cycle.
- 9:35And these parts are marked by big events and changes in
- 9:38culture. In particular, the fourth
- 9:41turning is a time of crisis. When the old order falls apart
- 9:47and a new one is put in place. The fourth turning is important
- 9:52for the retail industry because it is a time when there are big
- 9:55changes and disruptions in the market, such as the continued,
- 9:59peripheral ation of smart devices, and Smart Homes, as
- 10:03well as the increasing Reliance on digital channels.
- 10:07As a result consumers now have access to a vast array of
- 10:10products and services. This has resulted in a
- 10:13significant shift towards new experiences and demands as well
- 10:18as a need for more immersive. Long term digital experiences
- 10:23because of this traditional brick-and-mortar stores have had
- 10:26a hard time making the transition to a digital age.
- 10:29Many businesses haven't been able to keep up with the speed
- 10:32of change and have had to close others.
- 10:35Have been able to stay in business, by focusing on online
- 10:38sales, and building a strong, digital presence, and brand,
- 10:42which is not enough in the cost challenge environment of today,
- 10:45retailers need to be proactive and flexible to deal with the
- 10:49challenges of the Off turning and to grow well in the digital
- 10:53age, this means embracing new ways to use existing
- 10:57Technologies but more importantly better business
- 11:01models and new business model which give retailers more ways
- 11:05to reach and connect with custom.
- 11:07It also means being flexible and able to react quickly to changes
- 11:11in the market such as changes in our customers act or the arrival
- 11:15of new competitors. The role of the customer
- 11:18experience is critical Tickle. Now as it has ever been and as
- 11:22it will be in the future for retailers to think about, during
- 11:25the fourth, turning cost constraint consumers, have high
- 11:29expectations for how good an easy.
- 11:32Their experiences will be to meet these expectations
- 11:37retailers need to focus on creating shopping experiences
- 11:40that are easy personalized and fit.
- 11:43The customers need and sizes both biologically and physically
- 11:49as well. As their aspirations and
- 11:52desires. These means investing in
- 11:54Technologies, like, artificial intelligence machine learning to
- 11:58give potentially personalized dna-based recommendations, or it
- 12:03could mean offering convenient options, fulfillment, Beyond
- 12:07home delivery. Finally, retail is in the
- 12:10fourth. Turning need to be aware of how
- 12:12important sustainability and social responsibilities are As
- 12:17people become more aware of their purchases effect on the
- 12:21environment and Society. They are looking at Brands to
- 12:25share their values and beliefs sustainable and socially
- 12:29responsible. Retailers are more likely to get
- 12:32and keep loyal customers in the long run by being transparent
- 12:37across their demand and Supply chains.
- 12:40The following are lists of the next topic areas, the book moves
