- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland Journal podcast. I am
- 0:09Speaker 1: your host, Scott Brady, and we have a new segment
- 0:12Speaker 1: for the podcast. We're calling it Overland News and in general.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I'm going to be joined by Brian mcvickers, who is
- 0:19Speaker 1: a longtime friend and someone that I work with here
- 0:21Speaker 1: at Overland International. He has a real finger on the
- 0:24Speaker 1: pulse of the industry and a lot of the new
- 0:26Speaker 1: products that are coming into the market. So we're going
- 0:28Speaker 1: to discuss new products. These are going to be all
- 0:30Speaker 1: high quality components that we've tested or that are just
- 0:33Speaker 1: released and we want to share them with the audience.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And we're also going to talk a lot about some
- 0:37Speaker 1: of the new vehicles. So this is going to be
- 0:38Speaker 1: our Overland News segment, and it's all framed under the
- 0:42Speaker 1: caveat of we are not recommending people go out and
- 0:45Speaker 1: spend a bunch of money on stuff. However, there are
- 0:47Speaker 1: times that equipment enables our adventure. It allows us to
- 0:50Speaker 1: have maybe a little bit more comfort, a little bit
- 0:52Speaker 1: more safety, or it allows us to work remotely in
- 0:55Speaker 1: the field. So we're going to talk about new Overland
- 0:58Speaker 1: components that are available from the industry, our experience with them,
- 1:01Speaker 1: and whatever we're excited about at the time, So please
- 1:04Speaker 1: enjoy this new segment Overland News with the Overland Journal podcast.
- 1:10Speaker 1: This content is brought to you by Overland Journal, our

- 2:00Speaker 1: directly on our website at Overland Journal dot com. All right, Brian,
- 2:06Speaker 1: let's go into the Overland News. This is going to
- 2:09Speaker 1: be a new segment for us. Thanks for being on
- 2:12Speaker 1: because you get to see a lot of this stuff
- 2:15Speaker 1: before it's even available to consumers.
- 2:18Speaker 2: That's right.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And you're doing more and more vehicle testing, and you're
- 2:21Speaker 1: doing more and more equipment evaluation. So this seems like
- 2:25Speaker 1: a great opportunity for us to at least once a
- 2:28Speaker 1: quarter because there's so much coming out. There's so much
- 2:30Speaker 1: new information, there's so many new components, so many new
- 2:33Speaker 1: vehicles gear all that premise in the fact that you
- 2:36Speaker 1: don't need these things to travel. Some of them do
- 2:39Speaker 1: in power travel, and some of these things just can
- 2:41Speaker 1: bring joy to your life. But we're not suggesting that
- 2:44Speaker 1: people go out and buy all these things, but I'll
- 2:46Speaker 1: explain the ones that have been really important for me
- 2:50Speaker 1: in some of my recent travels and some of the
- 2:51Speaker 1: things that I'm excited about that help solve problems. We're
- 2:55Speaker 1: seeing more and more higher quality components come back into
- 2:58Speaker 1: the marketplace. We're also seeing a lot lot more innovation.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Now we got into this kind of period of time
- 3:03Speaker 1: when people are doing a lot of copycatting.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Now we're refinement.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Yeah, now we're seeing some quality coming back into the space,
- 3:09Speaker 1: some refinement, some more intentionality, some bigger companies too, which
- 3:14Speaker 1: is resulting in some pretty pretty interesting stuff. That's right well,
- 3:19Speaker 1: and I mean a great example of that, and we
- 3:21Speaker 1: can kind of get started with it is is Kuot
- 3:24Speaker 1: so Kuot is this super high end bicycle Beautiful bike
- 3:29Speaker 1: Racks rack company, and I had no idea that they
- 3:33Speaker 1: made an overland rack for trucks. I take a look
- 3:36Speaker 1: at the link and it's it's one of the best
- 3:39Speaker 1: looking truck racks that I've ever seen. The way that
- 3:42Speaker 1: they incorporated this it's kind of like this exoskeleton, but
- 3:47Speaker 1: it's all one piece, so it doesn't it doesn't look
- 3:49Speaker 1: like legos or an erector set. It looks really refined.
- 3:53Speaker 1: So you have this twenty twenty three truck, you have
- 3:55Speaker 1: this new and some modern vehicle, and that a're looking
- 4:00Speaker 1: it's a modern, handsome looking rack. Now we have not
- 4:03Speaker 1: tested this rack extensively yet. We do have one that's
- 4:06Speaker 1: going to be showing up any day. We're going to
- 4:08Speaker 1: be installing it on one of our project tundras. But
- 4:10Speaker 1: I'm really excited to see companies like Kuwat, who makes
- 4:14Speaker 1: these premium bicycle racks, now introducing components specifically for overlanding.
- 4:21Speaker 1: So yeah, take a look at that at that Kuwat rack.
- 4:24Speaker 3: They're a good example of what we're seeing more and
- 4:26Speaker 3: more in the overland space. Is so Kuwat has made
- 4:30Speaker 3: They've always been known for very high quality products, and
- 4:33Speaker 3: I think what they've done over the last few years
- 4:36Speaker 3: is they've noticed that their customers are overlanding, and they're
- 4:41Speaker 3: kind of they're not just riding bikes. They're into this
- 4:44Speaker 3: vehicle based adventure. Probably three or four years ago they
- 4:48Speaker 3: decided to go to the Overland Expo in Colorado and
- 4:52Speaker 3: leveland at the Mountain westco Sure, and that gave them
- 4:55Speaker 3: an opportunity to see these consumers firsthand. And so they're
- 4:59Speaker 3: getting the consumers, their customers kind of saying, hey, here's
- 5:02Speaker 3: how we use the rack, here's what we'd like to
- 5:04Speaker 3: see different or change, or here's what we like. And
- 5:07Speaker 3: then they start going to the events, and now we
- 5:10Speaker 3: start to see them making a very concerted effort towards
- 5:14Speaker 3: this marketplace, towards this audience.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Well, and a perfect example of that. I mean, many
- 5:18Speaker 2: people who overland also mountain bike.
- 5:20Speaker 1: But the thing that was really interesting to me is
- 5:22Speaker 1: how they said how they basically made a surprisingly beautiful,
- 5:27Speaker 1: effective rack, but then they took the things that they're
- 5:29Speaker 1: really really good at and they integrated it. So one
- 5:32Speaker 1: of the challenges is when you put when you put
- 5:34Speaker 1: a roof tent on top of your truck, you now
- 5:36Speaker 1: don't have roof space to carry your mountain bikes anymore.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Well, and to clarify, we're talking about their transition from
- 5:42Speaker 3: a hitch mounted rack that's right to a full truck
- 5:46Speaker 3: truck bed racks. Yeah, it's a trip bed rack that
- 5:49Speaker 3: will also have mountain bike and rooftop tent at the
- 5:52Speaker 3: same time.
- 5:52Speaker 1: And that was the thing that was interesting about it
- 5:54Speaker 1: is you can mount the roof tent to the top,
- 5:56Speaker 1: but then there are these super heavy duty brackets that
- 5:59Speaker 1: mount to the side the side of the rack system
- 6:02Speaker 1: and allows you to have a full sized roof tent
- 6:05Speaker 1: and two mountain bikes mounted to the same platform. So
- 6:08Speaker 1: again we're seeing this innovation quality. So that's a that's
- 6:11Speaker 1: a good example of what we're talking about. The other one, now,
- 6:14Speaker 1: in full disclosure, Rocky Talkie has been a very generous
- 6:18Speaker 1: supporter of the podcast, and I'm so grateful for that.
- 6:21Speaker 1: But it's important for us to note that they also
- 6:24Speaker 1: make products that we intentionally use because we find them
- 6:27Speaker 1: to be the best in class. We're grateful when we
- 6:30Speaker 1: get the opportunity to work with companies that are helping
- 6:33Speaker 1: us through taking care of things like the podcast, but
- 6:37Speaker 1: then they also make a product that we're really proud
- 6:39Speaker 1: to talk about. Rocky Talkie has made these these very
- 6:44Speaker 1: robust USBC chargeable long life lithium battery walkie talkies for
- 6:50Speaker 1: quite some time.
- 6:50Speaker 2: And then they're very small.
- 6:51Speaker 1: They're great for climbing and think of being on a
- 6:55Speaker 1: motorcycle or or if you're just a short distance away
- 6:58Speaker 1: from the vehicle. But they just came out the new one.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Yeah, to give you an idea of the quality and
- 7:02Speaker 3: the robustness of these radios. They were originally designed by
- 7:06Speaker 3: and four mountaineers.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and it looks like it.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Those are like those are kind of no compromise environments. Yeah,
- 7:13Speaker 3: and that's why they developed these radio.
- 7:15Speaker 1: And they're they're waterproof, IP sixty seven rated, they're drop rated,
- 7:19Speaker 1: so like all this stuff that unfortunately happens when you're overlanding,
- 7:23Speaker 1: like it starts raining when you're out spotting, or you
- 7:26Speaker 1: forget and you leave the radio in the back of
- 7:28Speaker 1: the truck and overnight, or it's sitting on the fender
- 7:31Speaker 1: when you're camping out and it gets soaked with rain.
- 7:34Speaker 1: It can handle that. But what they just came out
- 7:36Speaker 1: with a new model, and this is a five watt unit,
- 7:42Speaker 1: so higher output, further range, that's correct. So up to
- 7:45Speaker 1: a thirty five mile line of sight range. This does
- 7:49Speaker 1: require to go on to the FCC website and you
- 7:53Speaker 1: need to register as a gmrsuser.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Cost with that or just five bucks.
- 7:58Speaker 1: I think it's a very minimal sort. It may now
- 8:01Speaker 1: actually be free, but you do need to go on
- 8:03Speaker 1: and register because of the power of the unit. But
- 8:06Speaker 1: to get a thirty five mile range, and now you
- 8:08Speaker 1: don't have to do this complex installation of any anything
- 8:11Speaker 1: inside your vehicle. So when we were and we are
- 8:15Speaker 1: using the smaller Rocky Talkies in Africa, but you know,
- 8:18Speaker 1: Joe could be way around the corner when we're getting
- 8:21Speaker 1: ready to do a video shoot, or he can even
- 8:24Speaker 1: be in the village getting some supplies while I'm working
- 8:28Speaker 1: on the vehicle, and he could be miles away. You
- 8:30Speaker 1: guys are still and we're still able to communicate, and
- 8:32Speaker 1: it sounds the clarity of the communication is really good.
- 8:35Speaker 1: But I think the thing that stands out to me
- 8:37Speaker 1: about the Rocky Talkies is just the quality of the construction.
- 8:41Speaker 1: It's once you get a chance to actually hold one
- 8:43Speaker 1: of these things in your hand that you're like, wow,
- 8:45Speaker 1: this is a different level of consumer radio. And now
- 8:48Speaker 1: we have five watts, and there's also two different antenna
- 8:51Speaker 1: There's there's a shorter antenna for when it's on your person,
- 8:55Speaker 1: maybe the person spotting on the in the vehicle. You
- 8:57Speaker 1: can have this taller antenna and it all so appears
- 9:01Speaker 1: to be a standard antana, like a standardized antenna screw mount,
- 9:06Speaker 1: so you could actually a little larger or maybe even
- 9:10Speaker 1: a mag magmount, or you could use this duck on
- 9:13Speaker 1: a magmount. There's a lot of interesting developments around that.
- 9:16Speaker 1: So new five watt Rocky Talky radio, which I think
- 9:19Speaker 1: is pretty cool.
- 9:20Speaker 3: The other thing is the streamline design. It doesn't have
- 9:22Speaker 3: any knobs sticking out, yeah, nothing to catch, nothing to catch,
- 9:25Speaker 3: nothing to break off. And then they do have some
- 9:29Speaker 3: sort of I don't know if it's encryption or encoding
- 9:32Speaker 3: that allows you to kind of have more of a
- 9:35Speaker 3: personal channel.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Oh interesting, Yeah, that's right between group.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Yeah, between the and the places that I've been using
- 9:41Speaker 1: Rocky Tiger radios is nobody. There's nobody that has another
- 9:44Speaker 1: GMR GMRS within a thousand miles if you're at the
- 9:47Speaker 1: ski resort or at an overland expo for example, Overland
- 9:50Speaker 1: Expo whatever.
- 9:50Speaker 2: That's what we did that's.
- 9:51Speaker 1: What we did at the Overland expos We picked one
- 9:54Speaker 1: of those private channels. Yeah, but it's also like for
- 9:57Speaker 1: those that are on YouTube and you can see it
- 10:00Speaker 1: when you fire these things up, the display is actually
- 10:02Speaker 1: behind this panel. You can't even see it, so there's
- 10:05Speaker 1: not a it's not a display to break or you
- 10:07Speaker 1: can turn the beeping off. That's just great, you can't.
- 10:09Speaker 1: It can be totally silent. Pretty cool product. It's nice
- 10:13Speaker 1: to see them continue to be successful and to also
- 10:17Speaker 1: release new release, new products, new Rocky Talky Radio one
- 10:22Speaker 1: of the ones that I was most excited about. And
- 10:25Speaker 1: it's also we love to help support small businesses and
- 10:29Speaker 1: that is this unique componentry modification to the Starlink antenna.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Again for those.
- 10:35Speaker 1: On YouTube, you can see that this is one point
- 10:38Speaker 1: nine inches thick. It converts the the Starlink antenna, their
- 10:43Speaker 1: new standard kind of home RV antenna which normally has
- 10:48Speaker 1: this all these motors and it has a rod that
- 10:51Speaker 1: sticks out of it that can't be removed and they
- 10:54Speaker 1: get very bulky. It removes all of that and they
- 10:57Speaker 1: actually machine off the bottom of the antenna and then
- 11:02Speaker 1: they install so all of the power supply the router
- 11:07Speaker 1: all these other components, all the wire that you used
- 11:10Speaker 1: to have to carry to go between them. It's all
- 11:12Speaker 1: integrated into one unit.
- 11:13Speaker 3: So they take an original starlink.
- 11:15Speaker 2: God, I said, no, I sent them my starlink.
- 11:18Speaker 3: And they disassemble it.
- 11:20Speaker 1: They do, they do, and then they create new boards
- 11:23Speaker 1: and they they miniaturize several things. They also convert it
- 11:27Speaker 1: to twelve volts, so the the antenna's like when I
- 11:31Speaker 1: was traveling with it last year, the antennas were one
- 11:34Speaker 1: hundred and twenty volt, so you have all of that
- 11:36Speaker 1: parasitic loss of conversion between the two. They convert it
- 11:39Speaker 1: to twelve vaults. They integrate the Wi Fi antenna. It
- 11:44Speaker 1: is one point nine inches thick. Now removes all of
- 11:47Speaker 1: the arms and it can work flat mounted on the vehicle.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And what I'm using I was just using it on
- 11:53Speaker 1: the RAM that I'm testing. They have these heavy duty
- 11:57Speaker 1: magnetic feet, so I would I just stuck it on
- 12:00Speaker 1: the top of the RAM. It has a remote control
- 12:02Speaker 1: to turn it on and off. It plugs into the
- 12:05Speaker 1: twelve volt of the vehicle, or you can run it
- 12:07Speaker 1: off at one twenty. It also comes with a one
- 12:09Speaker 1: twenty converter and just one cable to connect it, one
- 12:12Speaker 1: single cable and it's like a heavy duty connector, weather
- 12:16Speaker 1: proof connector. I was doing seventy five miles an hour
- 12:19Speaker 1: down I seventeen with broadband internet connection.
- 12:22Speaker 3: And it's on top of the cab or in the truck.
- 12:25Speaker 1: On top of the cab of the of the RAM,
- 12:28Speaker 1: and it broadcasts a Wi Fi network broadband performance. I
- 12:34Speaker 1: was on a phone call with Joe, who I was
- 12:36Speaker 1: in Africa with this morning, just talking about some logistics stuff,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and at the end of the almost the end of
- 12:41Speaker 1: the call, I'm like, dude, by the way, this entire
- 12:43Speaker 1: phone call on WhatsApp, you couldn't tell I was driving
- 12:46Speaker 1: the ram down, you know, in Prescott here, down Williamson
- 12:49Speaker 1: Valley Road at sixty miles an hour on the phone
- 12:52Speaker 1: with him and you would never know it. It's just
- 12:54Speaker 1: going to keep getting better and better. It's very rare
- 12:56Speaker 1: that I say something is game changing, but Starlink is
- 12:59Speaker 1: game changing. Get smaller and and this this thing is
- 13:02Speaker 1: I can carry it on. I'm going to carry it
- 13:04Speaker 1: on with me to go to Africa. So it's a
- 13:06Speaker 1: really it's a really significant, uh new product and really.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Like a laptop, you're gonna have to take it out
- 13:12Speaker 3: of your bag.
- 13:12Speaker 1: No TSA man TSA pre check. It's going to raise suspicions.
- 13:19Speaker 1: So I'm going to go ahead. I'm gonna go ahead
- 13:21Speaker 1: and take it out of the bag to begin with.
- 13:23Speaker 1: But yeah, you know, it's it's very very cool. It
- 13:26Speaker 1: just it's it allows us to be in these remote,
- 13:29Speaker 1: incredible places and still get work done when we need to.
- 13:33Speaker 1: It just it enables a form of travel that I
- 13:36Speaker 1: prefer because I like to I love my job, I
- 13:39Speaker 1: love what I do, but I also want to be
- 13:41Speaker 1: in the middle of Rwanda while I'm doing it. And
- 13:44Speaker 1: finally there's a way for us to do that. It
- 13:48Speaker 1: completely does and it'll work on the sailboat. It works
- 13:52Speaker 1: in motion, it works on in a boat with c State.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Now there are new marine versions that are multi ndten
- 14:00Speaker 1: and they all which allows for them to take into
- 14:03Speaker 1: consideration the pitch and roll.
- 14:05Speaker 3: So what subscription do you have to have for this
- 14:07Speaker 3: to work and all the places?
- 14:09Speaker 1: That is an important consideration, and it is it is
- 14:13Speaker 1: necessary to get the global roaming package, so it's Global Mobile.
- 14:18Speaker 1: There's a domestic mobile version which is around one hundred
- 14:22Speaker 1: and fifty dollars. I think a month, and then there
- 14:24Speaker 1: is global roaming, which is two hundred dollars a month.
- 14:27Speaker 1: And despite the fact that they list few countries that
- 14:31Speaker 1: this is available so far, the people that are traveling
- 14:34Speaker 1: overland with it, it is working everywhere.
- 14:37Speaker 3: So this is totally even in places supposed to work.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Well yeah, supposedly, yeah, from what we hear.
- 14:43Speaker 1: So you've been working with the ionizer so oh three
- 14:47Speaker 1: oh three ionizer three.
- 14:48Speaker 3: So that's a really probably simple, there's some degree, but
- 14:52Speaker 3: it's they've got three or four different versions of it.
- 14:55Speaker 2: We all deal with stinky campers.
- 14:56Speaker 3: It's stinky campers, stinky rooftop tents. I can't remember the
- 15:00Speaker 3: last time my vehicle hasn't stunk after, you know, even
- 15:04Speaker 3: a three to four day.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Little trip I've traveled with you. Yeah, they got teenagers,
- 15:09Speaker 2: wayman on the kids, I see, Brian.
- 15:10Speaker 3: These little units basically convert they produce ozone, and ozone
- 15:15Speaker 3: will break down bacteria and that's the primary cause of
- 15:20Speaker 3: the smells and stinks that you that you get in
- 15:22Speaker 3: the vehicles or in the trailers, whatever it might be.
- 15:24Speaker 3: So they've got one that'll plug into a twelve volt outlet,
- 15:27Speaker 3: and then they've got one that's rechargeable. They also have
- 15:30Speaker 3: this cool little duffel bag that you can take your
- 15:34Speaker 3: stinky clothes or your stinky equipment and you can put
- 15:37Speaker 3: it into this duffel bag, zip it up, throw the
- 15:40Speaker 3: puck in there, and an hour later you come back.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Everything smells like ozone. So if you're not familiar with
- 15:47Speaker 3: ozone smell, I have no idea what ozone smells.
- 15:49Speaker 2: It's after a rainstorm smell. Oh, which I love that, right.
- 15:52Speaker 3: So rainstorms, with all the electricity in the air and
- 15:55Speaker 3: the lightning, they actually produce ozone. So that's just that
- 16:00Speaker 3: fresh rain smell that you smell is actually ozone.
- 16:03Speaker 2: So I had no idea. I just learned something new.
- 16:05Speaker 3: And then you just let that smell dissipate and then everything.
- 16:09Speaker 2: And why do you have to let it dissipate? Because
- 16:11Speaker 2: it's not safe.
- 16:11Speaker 3: It's not the safest thing to breathe in. Got it.
- 16:14Speaker 3: It's also not depends. We're not science, we're not signing scientists.
- 16:17Speaker 3: We're not trying to play scientists here to say that
- 16:19Speaker 3: you shouldn't breathe any of it. Some people say you
- 16:21Speaker 3: can breathe a certain amount, it's not a big deal.
- 16:23Speaker 3: They have like a.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Big well, you're breathing it in after a rainstorm.
- 16:26Speaker 3: So yeah, the big unit that they have, they say,
- 16:29Speaker 3: don't be in the same room with it. This episode
- 16:31Speaker 3: has to be smaller units are not a big deal.
- 16:33Speaker 1: It has to be parts per million because it's displacing something.
- 16:36Speaker 1: So so there are other gases that we need to
- 16:39Speaker 1: breathe that are being displaced.
- 16:41Speaker 3: When I went to the last Overland Expo in Colorado
- 16:45Speaker 3: and I drove that new Wrangler, the four by e.
- 16:49Speaker 3: When I was driving back, I had the little twelve
- 16:52Speaker 3: ol unit that you just put in a cigarette lighter,
- 16:54Speaker 3: and I did that. You're using this truck for a week,
- 16:57Speaker 3: it starts to stink. And so I actually had plugged
- 17:00Speaker 3: in while I was driving a little bit and you
- 17:02Speaker 3: was just a little weavy down the highway.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Was fine, a couple twitches, Yeah, but it.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Worked out really well. You couldn't tell. You can smell it,
- 17:10Speaker 3: but it doesn't affect it.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Well, And and there are times like the one. The
- 17:14Speaker 1: one solution that came to mind for me is in
- 17:18Speaker 1: the Scout camper. You know it's because it's because it's compact.
- 17:22Speaker 1: You have all of your living systems in there. Including
- 17:26Speaker 1: a shower that you use where there's a shower pan
- 17:28Speaker 1: that's drying out. And there's also a composting toilet on
- 17:32Speaker 1: the inside. So yeah, and it doesn't like it normally
- 17:35Speaker 1: doesn't smell bad like a composting toilet is is. It's
- 17:39Speaker 1: an amazing thing how well it works, but it has
- 17:42Speaker 1: this kind of earthy compost smell. And so that my
- 17:46Speaker 1: thought was, when you're living out of this thing, it
- 17:49Speaker 1: would probably be pretty nice. You're gonna go go in
- 17:52Speaker 1: to go to dinner or whatever, you just skip ozone
- 17:54Speaker 1: thing kicking.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Hey, you snap it for thirty minutes, you get back,
- 17:57Speaker 3: you open the windows yet and then and that kind
- 17:59Speaker 3: of neutral all the smells.
- 18:01Speaker 2: That's interesting.
- 18:01Speaker 3: So it doesn't smell like anything in particular once the
- 18:03Speaker 3: ozon dissipates, which is really nice.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Oh that's cool.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Well that was a that's like a totally out of
- 18:08Speaker 1: left field product that I didn't even think I ever needed.
- 18:11Speaker 1: But I'm like, you know what, that would actually be
- 18:12Speaker 1: pretty use. That will be pretty handy, pretty handy. There's
- 18:15Speaker 1: some other impressive new developments like Nidto has come out
- 18:20Speaker 1: with a recon grappler at tire that's right and This
- 18:24Speaker 1: is a particularly robust version of an at with Also
- 18:29Speaker 1: it's got a very robust shoulder lug. One of the
- 18:32Speaker 1: challenges with a lot of all terrains is chipping and chunking.
- 18:35Speaker 1: So to see this heavily reinforced, robust shoulder lug, and
- 18:40Speaker 1: it looks almost like a hybrid tire, so it's a
- 18:43Speaker 1: little bit more of an open pattern. So I think
- 18:45Speaker 1: it's going to work really well for people that are
- 18:48Speaker 1: in mixed terrain, like travelers like overlanders, where you're going
- 18:51Speaker 1: from a dry climate to a wet climate back. So
- 18:54Speaker 1: it's it's cool to see Nidto has always been known
- 18:57Speaker 1: for making very reliable, durable time but it's cool to
- 19:01Speaker 1: see them coming out with new technology and new tread patterns,
- 19:04Speaker 1: particularly ones that I think would be very useful for overlanders.
- 19:08Speaker 3: And it looks like they have the standard sizes. Yeah,
- 19:10Speaker 3: you know, they equivalent to thirty two to thirty three.
- 19:13Speaker 3: I think they had a thirty five just under thirty
- 19:16Speaker 3: five and thirty seven as well.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and a bunch of different wheel diameters and so
- 19:20Speaker 1: that that's cool to see how well Niddo is adopting
- 19:25Speaker 1: the overland space too. So the other one that I
- 19:28Speaker 1: think is really interesting and you've used for a while
- 19:30Speaker 1: is the Remarkable.
- 19:32Speaker 3: So is their first generation.
- 19:34Speaker 2: That's right.
- 19:34Speaker 1: So this is their second generation tablet with the keyboard,
- 19:38Speaker 1: that's correct. The reason why I've been using a Remarkable
- 19:41Speaker 1: is again it's distraction free creativity. So I write now
- 19:46Speaker 1: all of my content on the Remarkable because there is
- 19:51Speaker 1: I'll download it some PDFs with with some interesting or
- 19:54Speaker 1: some important backstory information. But I get my first draft
- 19:57Speaker 1: out on the Remarkable and eye production of content at
- 20:02Speaker 1: least fifty percent better, probably double. I probably producing twice
- 20:06Speaker 1: as many words per day using the Remarkable than I
- 20:08Speaker 1: would with any other device. Because an email comes through,
- 20:11Speaker 1: some notification comes through, and.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Know you've got a dedicated worklof.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Yeah, or there's some specific technical thing that you're trying
- 20:18Speaker 1: to articulate, and it sends you down this rabbit hole
- 20:22Speaker 1: of and then you have to get back into the
- 20:24Speaker 1: creative space of writing. So now I just I'll just
- 20:27Speaker 1: make a note to research something at the end of
- 20:30Speaker 1: the first draft.
- 20:31Speaker 3: How has it changed? So I have the Remarkable one tablet,
- 20:34Speaker 3: which I don't use as much anymore because the reason
- 20:37Speaker 3: that I got it was for notes. So I'll have
- 20:39Speaker 3: my laptop and then I take a lot of notes
- 20:41Speaker 3: along the way, whether for whatever calls meeting. Sure and
- 20:45Speaker 3: use research. But the biggest limitation that I found with
- 20:48Speaker 3: the Remarkable one was it doesn't transfer the files into
- 20:54Speaker 3: say like a cloud very easily. So I couldn't a
- 20:57Speaker 3: transfer the files anywhere. They would just kind of like
- 20:59Speaker 3: live on that thing. It didn't work well, and it does.
- 21:02Speaker 3: It does that now with the remark Remarkable that it
- 21:05Speaker 3: has its own cloud service. It syncs up with all
- 21:08Speaker 3: of your other devices. So or if I want to
- 21:10Speaker 3: just grab all of the copy that I just wrote,
- 21:13Speaker 3: as soon as I open up my laptop and I
- 21:14Speaker 3: open up the Remarkable app on my on my MacBook, bro,
- 21:19Speaker 3: it's all there and you can take drop it into
- 21:21Speaker 3: a word document.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Or export it as a word document, or import word
- 21:25Speaker 1: documents and read them on the Remarkable.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Right, So the evolution to the version two is much
- 21:30Speaker 3: more useful.
- 21:30Speaker 2: That's right.
- 21:31Speaker 1: And one of the things that Remarkable as a company
- 21:34Speaker 1: has been quite remarkable. They're very thoughtful and they take
- 21:38Speaker 1: what they do very seriously. But when I got the unit,
- 21:42Speaker 1: one of the things they said was like, it's just
- 21:44Speaker 1: really important for you to know that this isn't a
- 21:46Speaker 1: Kindle device, But I think they're selling themselves short because yes,
- 21:50Speaker 1: you do not have the Kindle app on the Remarkable,
- 21:53Speaker 1: but you can it can use epub versions of books.
- 21:56Speaker 3: They're talking about. Just for books, yeah, because it seems
- 21:59Speaker 3: like a totally different type of device.
- 22:00Speaker 1: This is perfect for books because it's not a backlit screen,
- 22:04Speaker 1: it's an organic led screen. I read now most of
- 22:07Speaker 1: the books on the Remarkable, But you're not going to
- 22:10Speaker 1: get like a book that was written in twenty twenty
- 22:12Speaker 1: three and read it on here. Not very likely because
- 22:15Speaker 1: it's not going to be available as an epub or
- 22:17Speaker 1: it's most likely, or it's not going to be available
- 22:19Speaker 1: as a PDF. But what it forced me to do
- 22:21Speaker 1: was come back to first principles reading. So I'm bringing
- 22:24Speaker 1: down books that are that have been in print for
- 22:27Speaker 1: a very long time and they're available as an epub
- 22:31Speaker 1: or they're available as a PDF, you know, like a
- 22:34Speaker 1: Richard Feynman book that I just just downloaded, and others
- 22:37Speaker 1: that are they're very much first principle thinking, and it's
- 22:40Speaker 1: forcing me to read in a different way instead of
- 22:42Speaker 1: just whatever the book of the day is. It's like
- 22:45Speaker 1: let's get back to these really original thinkers. And it's
- 22:49Speaker 1: not to say that there aren't original thinkers in twenty
- 22:51Speaker 1: twenty three, because there absolutely are. But there's a lot
- 22:53Speaker 1: of things that can be learned by reading older books.
- 22:56Speaker 2: I'm doing that.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I'm reading extensively now on the Remarkable, and then they'll
- 23:00Speaker 1: The last thing that I think is what makes it
- 23:02Speaker 1: really interesting for those of us that are creatives is
- 23:05Speaker 1: the fact that they now have this folio, which is
- 23:07Speaker 1: their keyboard accessory.
- 23:09Speaker 3: It has a pen as well.
- 23:10Speaker 2: It does.
- 23:11Speaker 1: I'm left handed and I have terrible penmanship, so I
- 23:14Speaker 1: think I've attempted one note on here. But I can
- 23:17Speaker 1: type like nobody's business.
- 23:19Speaker 3: But it'll convert your handwright.
- 23:20Speaker 2: It does it well.
- 23:22Speaker 1: It tries and everybody else's case for you, I'm sure
- 23:25Speaker 1: it works perfect for everyone else on the planet except
- 23:28Speaker 1: for me.
- 23:28Speaker 3: You could be a new case study.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 23:30Speaker 1: But I can type really fast, so I don't know
- 23:33Speaker 1: what my typing speed is, but it blazing like the
- 23:36Speaker 1: thing has smoke coming out of there, because that's what
- 23:38Speaker 1: I do all day most days. So, and the keyboard
- 23:41Speaker 1: is really good. It's very responsive, it works really well
- 23:45Speaker 1: with it feels tightly integrated. Yeah, I just like we
- 23:49Speaker 1: just did that today doing the notes to get ready
- 23:51Speaker 1: for this podcast. So for the traveler, you can read books,
- 23:54Speaker 1: you can write your daily journals, you can write notes,
- 23:58Speaker 1: but do it in this undistract did way where you're
- 24:01Speaker 1: able to just really focus on the craft, on the
- 24:03Speaker 1: deeper work. So I've really appreciated the remarkable.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Yeah, that's great.
- 24:08Speaker 1: That was one that I personally have been using more recently,
- 24:11Speaker 1: the potato and the remarkable.
- 24:12Speaker 2: All Right.
- 24:12Speaker 1: So the other thing that's come out recently came out
- 24:16Speaker 1: in the news is the new red Arc lithium ion
- 24:19Speaker 1: batteries are now available in North America. Yeah, and they
- 24:23Speaker 1: have a couple different sizes that are available in other markets,
- 24:26Speaker 1: primarily in Australia, but for the United States at least initially,
- 24:30Speaker 1: there is this very compact lithium ion battery that is
- 24:34Speaker 1: one hundred and fifty ampowers, which is going to meet
- 24:36Speaker 1: the needs of the vast majority of overland travelers unless
- 24:41Speaker 1: you are trying to run an air conditioner or you're
- 24:44Speaker 1: trying to run a very large complex camper system. One
- 24:48Speaker 1: hundred and fifty empowers is a great number. If you
- 24:50Speaker 1: were to put two of them in there. Then now
- 24:52Speaker 1: all of a sudden, you're running starlink. No problem, you're running,
- 24:56Speaker 1: You're exactly. But the reason why I think these are
- 24:59Speaker 1: notable is red Arc is almost always notable because of
- 25:02Speaker 1: the quality of their components and the fact that red
- 25:05Speaker 1: Arc specifically makes electronics for overland travelers. But what makes
- 25:10Speaker 1: this this battery really unique is that it has seventy
- 25:13Speaker 1: percent higher energy density, which means if you just translate
- 25:17Speaker 1: that into one hundred and fifty hour battery, it is
- 25:20Speaker 1: now going to be seventy percent smaller for the same
- 25:24Speaker 1: power output. So you end up with this very compact,
- 25:27Speaker 1: very high output battery from red Arc, which I think it.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Really looks like a normal size, relatively normal size battery
- 25:34Speaker 3: compared to the thing with the rope. The ropes on
- 25:36Speaker 3: either end. It's just yeah, big D three.
- 25:38Speaker 1: It's just a compact, massive amount of power in it
- 25:43Speaker 1: at one hundred and fifty empowers. So, and then the
- 25:46Speaker 1: other thing that's really relevant because sometimes when you're traveling
- 25:49Speaker 1: from campsite to campsite, you don't have a lot of
- 25:51Speaker 1: time to recharge, especially a battery that big. So if
- 25:54Speaker 1: you had two of them, you had three hundred ampowers
- 25:56Speaker 1: in there and you're trying to charge quickly under a
- 25:59Speaker 1: short period of time. It now has it has a
- 26:01Speaker 1: much faster charge rate than most of the other batteries
- 26:04Speaker 1: on the market. So the fact that while your Wrangler's
- 26:08Speaker 1: mainlining two hundred and twenty amps into the system, it
- 26:10Speaker 1: can actually consume that and charge very quickly.
- 26:13Speaker 3: Can it do that spliced into an existing system or
- 26:16Speaker 3: does it need a red ARC system to do that?
- 26:19Speaker 1: It looks as if all the information that I've looked
- 26:22Speaker 1: at it has a charge profile that's similar to other
- 26:25Speaker 1: lithium ion batteries, which means if you have an existing
- 26:27Speaker 1: system that is not or a solar charging system that
- 26:30Speaker 1: is not a red ARC but it has a lithium
- 26:33Speaker 1: charge profile available, then you can set.
- 26:35Speaker 2: It to work for that.
- 26:36Speaker 3: That's great.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Yeah, so really cool to see red Arc making those
- 26:40Speaker 1: batteries available in the US, and they just keep adding
- 26:43Speaker 1: new products, which is really exciting. The other thing I
- 26:45Speaker 1: thought was really interesting was to see AARB announce their
- 26:48Speaker 1: new trailer. So they announced the earth Camper. This looks
- 26:51Speaker 1: like a gigantic injection molded. Does injection molded? It's very cool.
- 26:56Speaker 1: A lot of people in the US don't know that
- 26:58Speaker 1: AARB has tons of experience with truck toppers, so they're
- 27:02Speaker 1: used to working with injection molded components, molding these complex
- 27:06Speaker 1: shapes and very modern designs, so they just found a
- 27:10Speaker 1: way to do that.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Well, that's in Australia. A lot of their catalog doesn't
- 27:14Speaker 3: make it to the US.
- 27:14Speaker 1: That's correct, and it makes sense. I mean, trying to
- 27:17Speaker 1: ship a truck camper truck capper to the US, you're
- 27:22Speaker 1: just not There's not gonna be enough margin to make
- 27:24Speaker 1: that work most likely. Whereas this trailer, with it having
- 27:28Speaker 1: all of this years of AARB experience built into it,
- 27:32Speaker 1: they literally built their ultimate overland trailer. So it'll be
- 27:34Speaker 1: interesting to see if the earth Camper comes to the
- 27:38Speaker 1: United States, because it looks really suitable to the.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Town does and it has enough style differences to it
- 27:43Speaker 3: that I think it would kind of stand out.
- 27:46Speaker 1: And it meets my first requirement of a trailer, which
- 27:48Speaker 1: means you need to be able to sleep inside of it.
- 27:49Speaker 1: If you're just using a trailer to haul around a
- 27:51Speaker 1: roof tent, doesn't make any sense to me. It may
- 27:54Speaker 1: make sense to somebody, it makes no sense to me.
- 27:56Speaker 1: You might as well, just put the roof tent on
- 27:57Speaker 1: the car. Different use cases, but for the most part,
- 28:01Speaker 1: if you can sleep inside the tent or inside the trailer,
- 28:03Speaker 1: you've now added a level of capability that's difficult to
- 28:06Speaker 1: employ with a typical pickup truck or suv. So this
- 28:10Speaker 1: is a large, sleep inside teardrop style but robust off
- 28:15Speaker 1: road camper, which is kind of cool. So I like that,
- 28:17Speaker 1: like to see airb just like trying totally new stuff.
- 28:20Speaker 3: So they every year they've got something, a couple of
- 28:23Speaker 3: new products.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Yeah, and a lot of times they just come out
- 28:25Speaker 1: of left field in a way that you don't expect
- 28:27Speaker 1: and then you're like, oh, that totally totally makes sense
- 28:29Speaker 1: in hindsight, So that's very cool. Another product I've been
- 28:33Speaker 1: using recently is the garment tread so I took that
- 28:36Speaker 1: with me to Africa. In my experience traveling around the
- 28:39Speaker 1: African continent, you have to have a garment device because
- 28:44Speaker 1: you need to have.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Tracks for Africa.
- 28:46Speaker 1: So Tracks for Africa is available as an app on
- 28:48Speaker 1: your phone or your tablet. It does not work very well.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I use it as a worst case scenario backup, but.
- 28:54Speaker 2: The one on the garment but it's a.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Totally different solution, so like the one that they have
- 28:59Speaker 1: in the app. I'm sure it's even a different development team.
- 29:01Speaker 1: It feels like a totally different experience between the tracks
- 29:04Speaker 1: for Africa app and the tracks.
- 29:05Speaker 3: For Africa and the tracks for Africa. Like User Information Base.
- 29:09Speaker 1: A lot of it is they do a lot of
- 29:11Speaker 1: ground truth thing, but they also collect information and they're
- 29:15Speaker 1: smart about it. So they wait until they get a
- 29:17Speaker 1: couple of tracks in the same area, and then they
- 29:20Speaker 1: ground troth them by by basically taking a larger sample set,
- 29:23Speaker 1: and then they add those they add those tracks to
- 29:26Speaker 1: the database, and they also do fairly regular updates of
- 29:30Speaker 1: their data. I mean literally, Joe and I are driving
- 29:33Speaker 1: the Grenadier down this track in Mozambique and and here
- 29:38Speaker 1: very clearly on the tracks for Africa, it says land mines.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Oh so like it's a different day.
- 29:42Speaker 1: You don't want to go Yeah, you don't want to
- 29:44Speaker 1: go over to where the landmines are, but like that
- 29:46Speaker 1: that's something that a you know, a Google map would
- 29:49Speaker 1: never show you or sat map would never show you.
- 29:51Speaker 3: And has all the have all the tracks been fairly accurate?
- 29:55Speaker 2: Yeah, Like it's just so good. Yeah, it's so good.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Now there.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Their data gets a little less robust in the northern
- 30:02Speaker 1: parts of Western Africa, but it's there's nothing like it,
- 30:07Speaker 1: and it displays best on the garment device. The other
- 30:11Speaker 1: reason why I always use a garment device is because
- 30:13Speaker 1: I need the reliability of track recording. I'm sure everybody
- 30:17Speaker 1: that's listening has experienced this. But then it happens with
- 30:19Speaker 1: all of them, Gaya, all of them, they just randomly
- 30:23Speaker 1: stop tracking stuff. And the way that I understand it
- 30:26Speaker 1: is not a GAYA problem, It's an edge of service problem.
- 30:30Speaker 1: So like the phone gets just on the edge of
- 30:32Speaker 1: service and it causes some disconnect between cell phone towers
- 30:36Speaker 1: and the internal GPS and it just stops recording your.
- 30:39Speaker 3: Try everything shuts down. I've had that happen a few times,
- 30:42Speaker 3: especially when you get to the edge of their mapping.
- 30:45Speaker 1: It's have to have a backup. I still use an iPad.
- 30:48Speaker 1: I still like Guya because of the different layers. I
- 30:51Speaker 1: use use it for some satmap stuff. But when I'm
- 30:54Speaker 1: traveling in Africa, and when I'm traveling anywhere, I always
- 30:57Speaker 1: run a garment because I know I'm going to get
- 30:59Speaker 1: the reliable track recording and reliable track recording has two
- 31:04Speaker 1: really beneficial outcomes. You can share the track with others
- 31:07Speaker 1: if that want to do the same trip, or keep
- 31:09Speaker 1: it for your own memories and referring back to But
- 31:12Speaker 1: the other reason why you do it as a safety
- 31:14Speaker 1: reason is that you want to be able to breadcrumb
- 31:17Speaker 1: turn around and follow your track back out.
- 31:19Speaker 3: And if you tried using your watch garment watch as
- 31:22Speaker 3: a redundancy.
- 31:23Speaker 1: I use it all the time for hiking because now
- 31:26Speaker 1: that I have the potato, I have no other way
- 31:30Speaker 1: to like check a MAF if I'm out hiking, I
- 31:33Speaker 1: intentionally don't really look at the garment. I track every
- 31:36Speaker 1: hike on the garment, but I intentionally don't look at
- 31:39Speaker 1: it because I've enjoyed like this kind of feeling of
- 31:42Speaker 1: having to pay attention where I'm walking now.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Just so you don't get lost.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Yeah sure, Whereas for years I've always had my phone
- 31:48Speaker 1: on me and I just completely I'm like, yeah, I
- 31:50Speaker 1: got to turn the left on fr three twenty something,
- 31:52Speaker 1: and you just go out and you twelve miles later
- 31:56Speaker 1: you end up back at your car and you really
- 31:57Speaker 1: have no idea where you were. I'm enjoying having to
- 32:00Speaker 1: stop and look at signs or think about the route
- 32:03Speaker 1: or research ahead of time. But I do always have
- 32:07Speaker 1: the garment watch map available if I had, if I
- 32:10Speaker 1: had to. I mean, and the garment watches are they're
- 32:12Speaker 1: pretty insane.
- 32:13Speaker 3: Yeah, that's amazing how much they put into that.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Well, and the reason why they work way better for
- 32:18Speaker 1: travel than an Apple Watch or anything else is the
- 32:20Speaker 1: amount of days that they that they last life.
- 32:23Speaker 3: It's the one all over twenty five days.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's well, and if you do a lot of
- 32:28Speaker 1: hiking and where you're doing GPS stuff, it's much less
- 32:31Speaker 1: than that, but it's still like seven eight nine days
- 32:34Speaker 1: of battery power and there you don't get that in
- 32:37Speaker 1: an Apple watch. And also like the intrusive parts of
- 32:40Speaker 1: the Apple Watch don't exist on the garment and you
- 32:43Speaker 1: don't feel like you've got to be like answering a
- 32:46Speaker 1: text on your watch. It's like, the watch works really
- 32:49Speaker 1: good as a watch. It does a good job of
- 32:51Speaker 1: tracking my sleep, it does a good job of tracking
- 32:53Speaker 1: all of my exercise.
- 32:54Speaker 2: And and other things.
- 32:56Speaker 1: But then it has these overland related tools on it,
- 33:00Speaker 1: like maps, compass, elevation, speed, over ground, all these other
- 33:05Speaker 1: things that are unique to a garment watch. So yeah,
- 33:07Speaker 1: it's kind of become the watch of choice for me.
- 33:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it's nice back up to the tread.
- 33:11Speaker 1: I have not used my Apple Watch since I got
- 33:15Speaker 1: the garment on my wrist. There are times that I'll
- 33:17Speaker 1: run an analog watch because I just prefer it sometimes,
- 33:20Speaker 1: But like for travel, it's now it's a total game changer.
- 33:24Speaker 1: It's another game changer product. It's really good. It's really good.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and like didn't when we were on the sailboat,
- 33:29Speaker 1: didn't Rusty like have a way to like track the
- 33:32Speaker 1: boat data on his watch.
- 33:34Speaker 3: He's got one that interfaces with the autopilot and all
- 33:38Speaker 3: the that's crazy, the entire system. So he was standing
- 33:41Speaker 3: up on the bow of the boat, you know, clicking
- 33:43Speaker 3: things on his watch to make the boat turn.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Yeah, that's pretty that's pretty amazing.
- 33:47Speaker 3: I think. I think they do a really good job
- 33:49Speaker 3: of having all their products talk to one another.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:52Speaker 1: So the one thing that I've noticed that from getting
- 33:55Speaker 1: deeper in the garment ecosystem is every interaction that I
- 33:59Speaker 1: have with the problem feels very professional, whereas a lot
- 34:02Speaker 1: of other tools that we especially electronics that we integrate with,
- 34:07Speaker 1: they feel very consumer grade. Whereas that's one thing I've
- 34:09Speaker 1: been really impressed with on the garment stuff. Is it
- 34:12Speaker 1: all feels very professional, very professional grade tools, which means
- 34:17Speaker 1: that it doesn't do some of the whiz bang stuff
- 34:18Speaker 1: that people get used to with other devices, but it
- 34:22Speaker 1: does all the important things perfectly every time. And that's
- 34:25Speaker 1: the rarity.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Yeah. I haven't hit any dead ends with it. Yeah,
- 34:28Speaker 3: so I think what you're talking about is some consumer products.
- 34:31Speaker 3: You're It does everything except the thing that you should
- 34:35Speaker 3: think that it could do, and.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Or it doesn't, or it just doesn't do it well.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Tells you that it's going to do, and it.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Does it well, and it does it like at a
- 34:42Speaker 1: level of a professional activity, just tracking exercise on the
- 34:46Speaker 1: garment is a better result, Like I get more consistent
- 34:49Speaker 1: results from that. And it doesn't lock up. It doesn't.
- 34:53Speaker 3: I've got some friends who swear by the athletic training
- 34:56Speaker 3: components that they have. Yeah, so that'll monitor your sleep
- 34:59Speaker 3: and all mount or all your workouts and then it
- 35:01Speaker 3: tells you when to rest. Yeah, I U tell you today,
- 35:04Speaker 3: don't let your heart rate go over one fifteen. It's
- 35:07Speaker 3: pretty accurate.
- 35:07Speaker 2: I use it.
- 35:08Speaker 1: I use the app on the iPad and I upload
- 35:11Speaker 1: everything to the watch, and I do not do any
- 35:15Speaker 1: physical exercise without running it through the garment because it
- 35:18Speaker 1: has been so effective, Like if I don't sleep well,
- 35:21Speaker 1: it helps me adjust those goals to make sure that
- 35:24Speaker 1: I'm not overstressing my body. And you know I'm not,
- 35:27Speaker 1: you know, twenty years old anymore. So like I want
- 35:29Speaker 1: my body to at the recovery time I do, I
- 35:31Speaker 1: need the recovery time. Garment watch is pretty good too.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Another one that you brought up was that new Intrepid
- 35:37Speaker 1: roof ten.
- 35:37Speaker 3: Tell me about that top ten? Yeah, you know what
- 35:39Speaker 3: I One of the things I like about the Intrepid
- 35:42Speaker 3: is it's another example of innovation in the rooftop ten market,
- 35:46Speaker 3: where I think you see a lot of regurgitated ideas, right,
- 35:50Speaker 3: a lot of recycled ideas where you know they're either
- 35:53Speaker 3: doing something that's already been done or they're ordering from
- 35:55Speaker 3: the same factory and just putting a different logo on it.
- 35:58Speaker 3: The Intrepid, if you can imagine, and it looks like
- 36:01Speaker 3: a wedge tent, but instead of just a kind of
- 36:05Speaker 3: forty five degree angled wedge, the roof has an extra
- 36:08Speaker 3: hinge in it so when it opens, it kind of
- 36:11Speaker 3: kind of opens like that. So this entire area becomes
- 36:14Speaker 3: your living space. Instead of just this.
- 36:16Speaker 2: I got it up with a lot more usable space.
- 36:19Speaker 3: A lot more usable space you could, you know, instead
- 36:21Speaker 3: of like.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Is it a hard shell or is it soft shell?
- 36:23Speaker 3: It's a hard shell.
- 36:24Speaker 2: Wow. Cool.
- 36:25Speaker 3: It's a hard shell that opens up with two hinges
- 36:28Speaker 3: and then it's got soft sides. Three soft sides, so
- 36:31Speaker 3: you can actually sit two people the length of the tent,
- 36:35Speaker 3: whereas a lot of wedge tents you could maybe sit
- 36:37Speaker 3: two people side by side. Yeah, it just gives you
- 36:39Speaker 3: a lot more space with a it's innovative, but it
- 36:43Speaker 3: looks like a fairly simple innovation. I mean they just
- 36:46Speaker 3: added a hinge and it completely changed the amount of
- 36:48Speaker 3: usable space.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Yeah, that's cool and it looks it looks good too.
- 36:52Speaker 1: It's nice to see people coming up with new ideas
- 36:54Speaker 1: instead of just copying others. So let's switch topics into vehicles.
- 37:00Speaker 1: You've been doing some more vehicle testing and most recently
- 37:04Speaker 1: you were on the Chevy Bison launch a bunch of
- 37:07Speaker 1: the different.
- 37:08Speaker 3: Yeah, it was the kind of the there was the
- 37:10Speaker 3: ZR two Bison family, so it included the Colorado and
- 37:14Speaker 3: the Silverado HD, which is a twenty five hundred HD.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Did it also have the fifteen hundred the fIF size?
- 37:22Speaker 3: It had a full sized fifteen hundred with the new
- 37:23Speaker 3: diesel engine.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Yeah, what'd you think of that new diesel?
- 37:27Speaker 3: I liked it. It was I only got to drive
- 37:29Speaker 3: it for probably about thirty minutes. They let us drive that.
- 37:33Speaker 3: They let everybody have a turn to drive that for
- 37:34Speaker 3: about thirty minutes on the first day. Sure, it wasn't
- 37:38Speaker 3: a very heavy focus. The only thing different about the
- 37:41Speaker 3: vehicle is the engine. But as far as the engine goes,
- 37:44Speaker 3: I did.
- 37:45Speaker 2: And that's a three liter diesel.
- 37:47Speaker 3: I did about fifteen minutes of highway speeds up to
- 37:50Speaker 3: about seventy five and then did a very soft sandy
- 37:55Speaker 3: dirt track, a sandy track in the desert with some
- 37:58Speaker 3: hard embedded rock. Yeah, and it was effortless. I actually
- 38:02Speaker 3: kept it in four high because for low with that
- 38:05Speaker 3: diesel had so much torque that it was for what
- 38:09Speaker 3: we were we were flat.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:11Speaker 3: Sure, you like really couldn't drive it because it had
- 38:13Speaker 3: so much low end torque. Yeah, And so I just
- 38:16Speaker 3: kept it in four high and it it did. I mean,
- 38:19Speaker 3: it was effortless to drive.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:21Speaker 1: This is the evolution of the three leader that's in
- 38:24Speaker 1: the eighty four project vehicle that we've got, And it's
- 38:28Speaker 1: so encouraging to see Chevrolet and GMC continuing with that
- 38:33Speaker 1: power plant because it's the best motor I've ever had
- 38:35Speaker 1: in any vehicle it ever owned. Like I just to
- 38:38Speaker 1: get twenty twenty one miles of the gallon out of
- 38:41Speaker 1: a full sized truck on thirty fives is just unbelievable,
- 38:44Speaker 1: and it does it.
- 38:45Speaker 3: They really seemed to be there. I met with their
- 38:49Speaker 3: whole engineering team and their design team. They seem to
- 38:51Speaker 3: be doing an exceptional job at not just listening to
- 38:55Speaker 3: the consumer, but seeing and understanding how the consumer is
- 38:59Speaker 3: using their vehicles. Yeah, and then providing solutions that not
- 39:02Speaker 3: just because they look good on a design board, because
- 39:05Speaker 3: they're going to be functional in a day to day use.
- 39:07Speaker 1: And it's in the same thing applies to GMC. But
- 39:11Speaker 1: to see like an AEV addition either ZR two or
- 39:16Speaker 1: an AT four x so front and rear, lockers, thirty
- 39:20Speaker 1: five thirty five inch tall tires, AEV bumpers front and rear,
- 39:24Speaker 1: and a three liter turbo diesel in a half ton truck.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Is just like, that's so cool.
- 39:29Speaker 1: The only thing that I would love to see improve
- 39:31Speaker 1: with some of those those trucks. Is the payload when
- 39:34Speaker 1: you get them optioned up that way, it can be
- 39:36Speaker 1: around one thousand pounds of payload, which people will say like, oh,
- 39:39Speaker 1: that's a half ton. Well, it's actually a five passenger
- 39:42Speaker 1: half ton, so you have to take one hundred and
- 39:44Speaker 1: fifty to one hundred and seventy five pounds. Each manufacturer
- 39:48Speaker 1: uses a different metric or there are different standards for
- 39:51Speaker 1: what an occupant weight is considered standardized to. But if
- 39:55Speaker 1: you used one hundred and fifty pounds as that number,
- 39:59Speaker 1: and you have five passengers in there, so you've got
- 40:02Speaker 1: eating seven, you have seven hundred and fifty pounds, you
- 40:05Speaker 1: have seven hundred and fifty pounds of passengers, So it
- 40:07Speaker 1: really should be seventeen hundred and fifty pounds of payload
- 40:12Speaker 1: in that vehicle to make it a half ton, because
- 40:15Speaker 1: it needs to be able to carry a half ton
- 40:17Speaker 1: of payload and five passengers.
- 40:20Speaker 3: So and every passenger is going to it's more than
- 40:22Speaker 3: one hundred and fifty because everybody's got to.
- 40:24Speaker 2: But it's okay to make it.
- 40:26Speaker 3: It's okay to pounds a person.
- 40:27Speaker 2: It's okay to make it.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Like whatever, the standard is, you know, like Chevy doesn't
- 40:31Speaker 1: need to reinvent that. And this apply is not unique
- 40:34Speaker 1: to show everybody. All of the manufacturers of these half
- 40:36Speaker 1: ton trucks are not making half ton pickups. They are
- 40:39Speaker 1: making like you and I could not go in most
- 40:43Speaker 1: of these half ton trucks with the two of us
- 40:45Speaker 1: and two motorcycles. We could not carry it. You think
- 40:49Speaker 1: we tap out guaranteed. Yeah, Like if you and I
- 40:51Speaker 1: had two you know, KLR six fifties in the bed
- 40:54Speaker 1: and you and I both weigh has spelt two five
- 40:58Speaker 1: two hundred ish, like, you couldn't do it. You could
- 41:00Speaker 1: not carry two motorcycles and two buddies to go out
- 41:04Speaker 1: for the day and I have to and that just
- 41:05Speaker 1: doesn't work. So you got to have the payload needs
- 41:08Speaker 1: to be based upon the standard, which is either one
- 41:11Speaker 1: hundred and fifty one hundred and seventy five pounds depending
- 41:13Speaker 1: on the standard per passenger five passengers plus one thousand pounds,
- 41:18Speaker 1: which is a halftime.
- 41:18Speaker 3: But we've seen this from every manufacturer, every manufacturer struggling.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Not with Ford.
- 41:24Speaker 1: You don't think like Ford does a lot of things average.
- 41:28Speaker 1: They do payload really well, like they get it if
- 41:31Speaker 1: you get a new raptor are seventeen hundred and fifty
- 41:34Speaker 1: pounds of payload, okay, five passenger, one thousand pounds of payload.
- 41:39Speaker 2: They get it.
- 41:40Speaker 1: So it can be done, and it is being done.
- 41:42Speaker 1: It can be done for sure. And it looked like
- 41:45Speaker 1: a really challenging route Johnson Valley, right, it was Johnson Valley.
- 41:48Speaker 3: And you know a few of us were talking about
- 41:50Speaker 3: that the coolest part about this. And I asked a
- 41:53Speaker 3: couple of the spotters and a couple of the guys
- 41:54Speaker 3: who pre ran. They didn't manicure the route. We've been
- 41:57Speaker 3: on vehicle drives before, where they they can the experience, right,
- 42:02Speaker 3: everything is pre planned. They know whats right. And so
- 42:08Speaker 3: we went out into Johnson Valley. We based out of
- 42:12Speaker 3: it called Laser Town, which I had never been to.
- 42:16Speaker 3: It's a collection of containers on the middle of the
- 42:17Speaker 3: desert and it's it's pretty cool, right, and they've got
- 42:21Speaker 3: a bunch of art, little art installations, and I think
- 42:24Speaker 3: for King of the Hammers it's kind of party centerre.
- 42:27Speaker 3: So we started out a Laser Town and so we
- 42:29Speaker 3: took both trucks up. It was called the short Bus.
- 42:34Speaker 3: It was pretty pretty steep, getting steep and loose, and
- 42:38Speaker 3: then going down the backside. Every truck was on three
- 42:42Speaker 3: wheels going down. So that was the first little trail
- 42:46Speaker 3: that we did. Then what I was really impressed with
- 42:49Speaker 3: was the second trail. I think it was lower Johnson Valley.
- 42:53Speaker 3: It was just it's a little shoot of a trail,
- 42:55Speaker 3: but when you look at it from the bottom, it
- 42:58Speaker 3: looks like a rock field, but there's a little track
- 43:01Speaker 3: that kind of interweings the big rocks and the best
- 43:06Speaker 3: example of what they were trying to showcase. And so
- 43:10Speaker 3: I was driving the Colorado Colorado zero to Bison. They're
- 43:14Speaker 3: really proud of the rock rails and the skid plates
- 43:18Speaker 3: and they.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Get all these boron steel.
- 43:21Speaker 3: Yeah, it's really well built and really well put together.
- 43:24Speaker 3: So we're going up. There's a shelf, probably about a
- 43:27Speaker 3: four foot shelf, and to get to the four foot shelf,
- 43:30Speaker 3: there's this big boulder that could have very easily been moved,
- 43:34Speaker 3: but they chose to just leave it there. It had
- 43:36Speaker 3: been crossed so many times it was getting unstable, so
- 43:40Speaker 3: it would roll around a little bit. You get up
- 43:42Speaker 3: over it. And the other thing is you could probably
- 43:44Speaker 3: have gone to the right of it. You probably could
- 43:46Speaker 3: have sneaked around the big boulder, but they've got their
- 43:49Speaker 3: spotting team and they spotted a straight over, so a
- 43:52Speaker 3: driver side front right over this boulder, and you drop down.
- 43:56Speaker 3: We're on thirty fives and we dropped down the other
- 43:59Speaker 3: side of it, and now you're sitting on the rock
- 44:02Speaker 3: rail on this boulder. And you know, when we go
- 44:05Speaker 3: drive trucks.
- 44:06Speaker 2: We don't do that.
- 44:06Speaker 3: We don't do that. We were very very careful, did
- 44:10Speaker 3: not touch anything. And I even looked at the guy
- 44:13Speaker 3: and I said, I don't really don't like touching stuff
- 44:15Speaker 3: with the trucks, and he goes, no, no, I want you
- 44:18Speaker 3: to do what you're doing. That's why I put you here.
- 44:20Speaker 3: And I was like, all right, now, what do you
- 44:21Speaker 3: want me to do? He goes, drive it, And so
- 44:24Speaker 3: I drove it, and that boulder scraped the entire length
- 44:29Speaker 3: of that rock rail. And then you get out and
- 44:32Speaker 3: you go up the ledge. And part of the reason
- 44:34Speaker 3: that they had it there is when you when you
- 44:36Speaker 3: did get the front up front end up the ledge,
- 44:39Speaker 3: you're now your back end is right on top of
- 44:41Speaker 3: that boulder, sure right, And then you go the rest
- 44:43Speaker 3: of the way and everything's fine, and I got out
- 44:46Speaker 3: and I looked at the rock rail and it was
- 44:48Speaker 3: like it never happened. Wow. So not only the finish
- 44:51Speaker 3: and the coating was incredibly durable because it didn't have
- 44:54Speaker 3: any really visible damage to it. It had some dirt
- 44:57Speaker 3: and dust on it, sure, but it didn't fleck, it
- 45:00Speaker 3: didn't bend.
- 45:01Speaker 2: Wow.
- 45:02Speaker 3: And that's and I you know, I looked at him.
- 45:04Speaker 3: I was talking to him, and he's like, I purposely
- 45:06Speaker 3: want you guys to see how thoughtfully we've built these vehicles.
- 45:10Speaker 1: Yeah, they're just they're made from the beginning to be
- 45:13Speaker 1: like really exceptional over land vehicle. I mean again, like
- 45:16Speaker 1: we talked about a few minutes ago, but Factory thirty fives,
- 45:19Speaker 1: Factory AEV wheels, Factory AEV bumpers, boron steel skid plates,
- 45:23Speaker 1: front and rear lockers, full length rock rails.
- 45:26Speaker 2: It's insane.
- 45:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a full pack.
- 45:27Speaker 1: It's insane.
- 45:28Speaker 2: It's like in so insane.
- 45:29Speaker 3: And then we're at the same the same day, you know.
- 45:32Speaker 3: Then we swapped around a little bit and we drove
- 45:34Speaker 3: the twenty five hundred hd ZR two Bison and we
- 45:37Speaker 3: took it on the same trails as the Colorado.
- 45:39Speaker 2: Wow.
- 45:40Speaker 3: So you've got this, it's a much bigger platform. The
- 45:42Speaker 3: interesting thing about that truck is when you walk around
- 45:45Speaker 3: it on the outside, it doesn't look that big. When
- 45:49Speaker 3: you get into it to drive it, it feels quite
- 45:52Speaker 3: feels it's a big truck.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Yeah. From the sure.
- 45:55Speaker 3: Side, it was big enough that you know, I had
- 45:57Speaker 3: the driver's seat, you know, jack far up as I
- 46:00Speaker 3: could to see over the hood.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Sure.
- 46:02Speaker 3: But then they have this great camera system on both trucks.
- 46:05Speaker 3: They have a front and rear camera mounted to the
- 46:08Speaker 3: chassis underneath, so you can you can scroll through all
- 46:11Speaker 3: the video feed. You can see a front view, a
- 46:15Speaker 3: rear view, you can see side views to see all
- 46:18Speaker 3: four corners, and it doesn't time out, so you could
- 46:21Speaker 3: be driving fifty miles an hour and the camera feed
- 46:24Speaker 3: is still so good. Yeah, a lot of vehicles we've
- 46:27Speaker 3: seen before. They've got the sea through hood whatever it
- 46:29Speaker 3: is and shuts off at five six months. You get
- 46:32Speaker 3: up early to ten miles an hour and now it
- 46:34Speaker 3: goes away. This will stay on until you turn it off,
- 46:38Speaker 3: which was great in the desert, and it was great
- 46:40Speaker 3: going downhill in that twenty five hundred HD because.
- 46:43Speaker 2: I can't see you can't see anything.
- 46:44Speaker 3: Yeah, and so now you can see it's like looking
- 46:47Speaker 3: through the front of the vehicle.
- 46:49Speaker 2: That's cool, it's pretty neat. That's awesome.
- 46:51Speaker 1: A couple announcements. BMW just announced the new thirteen hundred GS,
- 46:56Speaker 1: which is exciting to see, twenty five pounds lighter, which
- 46:59Speaker 1: is also encouraging to so they keep getting lighter and
- 47:01Speaker 1: more effective.
- 47:02Speaker 3: The thirteen twenty five pounds lighter than the twelve.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Hundred, than the twelve to fifty that it's leaving.
- 47:07Speaker 1: They are being a little more conservative on horsepower, which
- 47:10Speaker 1: I do not see is a bad thing. I think
- 47:11Speaker 1: it's one hundred and forty or one hundred and forty
- 47:13Speaker 1: seven horsepower plenty. It's plenty. It is plenty. So like
- 47:18Speaker 1: I'm so glad they finally like like one of the
- 47:20Speaker 1: manufacturers is just like not trying to pursue horsepower numbers
- 47:24Speaker 1: and an adventure bike because after about one hundred horsepower
- 47:27Speaker 1: in almost every off road condition, it's not an advantage,
- 47:31Speaker 1: it's it's a disadvantage. So it just ends up just
- 47:34Speaker 1: tearing up the rear tire that much faster. So and
- 47:37Speaker 1: then Triumph has some updates to their new twelve hundred.
- 47:41Speaker 1: I'm a huge fan of the twelve hundred X bike
- 47:43Speaker 1: that I rode around South Africa and into Swaziland. Really
- 47:47Speaker 1: like that bike, so it's great to see them continuing
- 47:49Speaker 1: to innovate with that with that platform. But the one
- 47:53Speaker 1: that I really want to talk about, and we'll spend
- 47:56Speaker 1: a few minutes on that, is the new Toyota to
- 47:58Speaker 1: fifty platforms. So it's going to be available in a
- 48:01Speaker 1: land Cruiser two fifty and then it's going to be
- 48:04Speaker 1: available in the new Lexus g X. The powertrains are different,
- 48:07Speaker 1: the price points are also quite a bit different. When
- 48:10Speaker 1: you look at the two of them, you can tell
- 48:11Speaker 1: that they are very much built upon the same platform.
- 48:14Speaker 3: Now I've seen the land Cruiser firsthand. Yeah, you got
- 48:17Speaker 3: to see the Lexus firsthand.
- 48:18Speaker 2: I did.
- 48:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:19Speaker 2: What did you think of the land Creaser.
- 48:20Speaker 3: I think it's going to be a great addition to
- 48:22Speaker 3: the marketplace. I think it's going to be a really
- 48:24Speaker 3: nice mid price solution.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:27Speaker 3: I think from a functionality side, it does everything that
- 48:30Speaker 3: you're going to want it to do.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:31Speaker 3: From a price tag starting around I think that said,
- 48:35Speaker 3: it starts at fifty five thousand.
- 48:37Speaker 1: In twenty twenty three, all of a sudden, it seems cheap,
- 48:40Speaker 1: or it just it seems affordable. Yeah, but that's still
- 48:43Speaker 1: so much money.
- 48:44Speaker 3: I think the reason it feels affordable is everything else
- 48:47Speaker 3: in that class is going to be It's going to
- 48:49Speaker 3: start seventy five eighty right, right, I mean even the
- 48:53Speaker 3: you know, in some ways, in many ways, it's replacing
- 48:56Speaker 3: the two hundred we had available in the US. The
- 48:58Speaker 3: two hundred started at eighty eight, right, thousand.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Dollars, And I wonder how it's going to impact or
- 49:04Speaker 1: if it just replaces both the two hundred and the Forerunner.
- 49:08Speaker 1: It seems like that that would be that would be
- 49:10Speaker 1: something that would make sense because the only other platform
- 49:13Speaker 1: I mean they would build the Forerunner on the two
- 49:16Speaker 1: fifty platform is the fore Runner has always traditionally been
- 49:19Speaker 1: built on the Proto platform, which the Proto one fifty
- 49:22Speaker 1: is the precursor to this vehicle. That was the land
- 49:25Speaker 1: Cruiser two was built on the Proto two the Proto
- 49:28Speaker 1: was built on, and then the most recent fore Runner
- 49:30Speaker 1: was also built on it. So I wonder if this
- 49:34Speaker 1: new land Cruiser is going to replace both.
- 49:36Speaker 3: All I can say is that these guys think about
- 49:38Speaker 3: this stuff a lot more than we give them credit
- 49:41Speaker 3: for h Yeah, there were quite a few people who
- 49:43Speaker 3: asked direct questions in person the Forerunner and there were
- 49:48Speaker 3: no answers given.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:49Speaker 3: But what I did pick up when you look at
- 49:54Speaker 3: historically over the past few years, when that when they
- 49:57Speaker 3: took the two hundred series away, they knew what they
- 50:00Speaker 3: were doing in the sense of they took the two
- 50:02Speaker 3: hundred series away knowing that they were going to have
- 50:05Speaker 3: the two fifty launching now right, they kind of got
- 50:08Speaker 3: they got beat up a lot in social media and
- 50:12Speaker 3: just from the consumer side, they got beat up a
- 50:14Speaker 3: lot by taking the two hundred series away. But there
- 50:17Speaker 3: was kind of this grand plan the entire time. Yeah, Toyota,
- 50:20Speaker 3: they always have a grand They got a grand plan.
- 50:22Speaker 3: I mean when they took the two hundred away, they
- 50:24Speaker 3: knew that they had the two fifty company. Yeah, right,
- 50:26Speaker 3: and so.
- 50:27Speaker 2: They would have to already would have been into design stage. Yeah.
- 50:30Speaker 3: So I don't think the fore Runners going away. I
- 50:33Speaker 3: think there's some.
- 50:35Speaker 2: It would be really there's a plan for the fore Runner. Yeah,
- 50:37Speaker 2: what else is going to have.
- 50:38Speaker 1: It would have to be, it would have to be,
- 50:40Speaker 1: and it would have to be such a departure. But
- 50:42Speaker 1: the two fifty is a departure from the two hundred.
- 50:44Speaker 1: The two hundred is the it is the big body
- 50:48Speaker 1: J series, like Global Language, two.
- 50:50Speaker 3: Fifty is quite quite smaller than the two hundred.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Well, in some ways it's a little bit narrower, glinches
- 50:55Speaker 1: here or there. Yeah, it's a little bit narrower.
- 50:58Speaker 3: But the feeling you get when you walk up to
- 51:00Speaker 3: the two fifty, the two hundred, and even the three hundred,
- 51:03Speaker 3: if you if you've had the chance that you've seen the.
- 51:05Speaker 2: Three hundred, yeah've driven.
- 51:06Speaker 3: It's amazing and those vehicles have to me, that's kind
- 51:10Speaker 3: of this bulbous, larger vehicle feeling for sure, right, and
- 51:14Speaker 3: just the way that the sheet metals formed and everything else,
- 51:18Speaker 3: the two fifty feels smaller, and it feels and it
- 51:23Speaker 3: presents smaller when you walk up to it.
- 51:25Speaker 1: I would agree, and the lexus is the same way.
- 51:27Speaker 1: But it's just really important. Like some people are saying, oh,
- 51:30Speaker 1: it's not a land cruiser, they don't understand land cruiser
- 51:33Speaker 1: history if they say that, because there have been lots
- 51:35Speaker 1: of land cruiser twos. So these are vehicles that are
- 51:38Speaker 1: called land cruisers. They're a land cruiser two, or they're
- 51:41Speaker 1: called a proto in some markets, but they are still
- 51:44Speaker 1: a land Cruiser, but they are not the heavy duty
- 51:47Speaker 1: land Cruiser. So that is the land Cruiser three hundred,
- 51:50Speaker 1: which is the most robust, durable global platform that they
- 51:54Speaker 1: make in a passenger wagon.
- 51:56Speaker 2: The two point fifty is.
- 51:58Speaker 1: Saying a proto or saying a cruiser two so, but
- 52:01Speaker 1: that is not to take anything away from it. It
- 52:03Speaker 1: is deserving of the land Cruiser name. It is going
- 52:06Speaker 1: to be, in no doubt in my mind, it's going
- 52:09Speaker 1: to be an exceptional vehicle for North American overland travelers.
- 52:12Speaker 1: And the fact that it might be available actually in
- 52:14Speaker 1: the mid fifties is pretty impressive. The GX is going
- 52:18Speaker 1: to have more power, it's going to have more luxury.
- 52:20Speaker 1: But they also Lexus has taken overlanding series too, so
- 52:24Speaker 1: they're going to have this overtrail version that has got
- 52:27Speaker 1: thirty three inch tall tires and rear loocking differential and
- 52:30Speaker 1: crawl control and you know, these high clearance bumpers, and
- 52:34Speaker 1: so it's just awesome to see.
- 52:36Speaker 3: They're bringing a lot more take I love it.
- 52:38Speaker 1: I love it, and I'm such a fan of Toyota.
- 52:41Speaker 1: I've literally trusted my life to this brand and around
- 52:45Speaker 1: the world and to see them, like the director of
- 52:48Speaker 1: marketing for Toyota to say we're all in on overlanding.
- 52:52Speaker 1: That is so cool to hear from a brand that
- 52:55Speaker 1: really has made world class overland vehicles for many decades
- 53:00Speaker 1: that their Toyota North America is all in on overlanding.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Is so exciting for us, you know, And it's just
- 53:05Speaker 1: a really important thing to see that that vehicle is available.
- 53:08Speaker 1: It leaves a lot of questions around the forerunner. It
- 53:12Speaker 1: also clearly tells us that their intention is not to
- 53:16Speaker 1: bring in the three hundred other than in the Lexus
- 53:19Speaker 1: lex six hundred variant, So we're not going to not
- 53:22Speaker 1: likely to see a three hundred series land cruiser here.
- 53:24Speaker 3: No, I don't think it's on the I don't think
- 53:26Speaker 3: it's on the plan for them.
- 53:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:28Speaker 1: But again, it's like it would be so easy to
- 53:30Speaker 1: just for like someone on some troll on the internet
- 53:32Speaker 1: to just say, like, it's not a land cruiser, or
- 53:35Speaker 1: you didn't bring us the right car.
- 53:36Speaker 2: They brought us exactly the right car.
- 53:38Speaker 3: Yeah. Granted none of us have had the chance to
- 53:40Speaker 3: drive it yet. Yeah, but on paper and in person
- 53:44Speaker 3: when you get to poke around it, it's got everything.
- 53:46Speaker 2: It looks great.
- 53:46Speaker 3: It looks great and it's comfortable. I got to sit
- 53:49Speaker 3: in it. You know, everything about it, the.
- 53:50Speaker 1: Shop rights, stop rights, yeah, the upright seating position, and
- 53:54Speaker 1: the good clearance, like it's just going to be awesome.
- 53:57Speaker 1: And the fact that it's in twenty twenty three terms,
- 54:00Speaker 1: it's reasonably priced. It's just so good. It's so good,
- 54:05Speaker 1: So props to Toyota for that. I'm really excited to
- 54:08Speaker 1: see how they come out, how it's optioned, and then
- 54:11Speaker 1: of course the chance for us to drive it the
- 54:13Speaker 1: other vehicles that I've been spending some time in the
- 54:16Speaker 1: In the new Ram Rebel twenty five hundred, they now
- 54:19Speaker 1: have a rear locking differential in the vehicle. This is
- 54:23Speaker 1: also available in a solid rear It's solid front actle,
- 54:26Speaker 1: solid rear axle, but the rear axle is a five
- 54:29Speaker 1: link coil sprung suspension system. The truck is showing its
- 54:32Speaker 1: age a little bit, the engine is definitely showing its
- 54:34Speaker 1: age a little bit, but the interior is just very
- 54:37Speaker 1: well done. Rams, because of AEV are really the full
- 54:41Speaker 1: sized truck of choice for most people. And the fact
- 54:45Speaker 1: that you can now get it with a factory rear
- 54:47Speaker 1: locker is another really important, and it does not it's
- 54:52Speaker 1: just a it's their ram rebel package, but that is
- 54:56Speaker 1: the package that you would use as the baseline for
- 54:58Speaker 1: building an AEV truck. Yeah, an AV prospector. But the
- 55:04Speaker 1: problem with prospectors in the right in the last couple
- 55:06Speaker 1: of years was the lack of availability of a rear locker.
- 55:08Speaker 1: So it's not that they were incapable off road because
- 55:11Speaker 1: they were on. They were on forty so they were fine.
- 55:14Speaker 1: They were fine. But a rear locking differential. It allows
- 55:18Speaker 1: us to go slower, it allows us to show more
- 55:20Speaker 1: mechanical sympathy to the vehicle, and most important in most cases,
- 55:24Speaker 1: it allows us to do less trail damage. There's any
- 55:27Speaker 1: time we can introduce less wheel spin, we're doing less
- 55:30Speaker 1: damage to the trails that we want to keep open
- 55:32Speaker 1: as a community. So being responsible and activating a rear
- 55:35Speaker 1: locker when you have the opportunity to, and as travelers,
- 55:38Speaker 1: we're oftentimes super remote, so we want to have as
- 55:41Speaker 1: much capability as we can get, especially in areas that
- 55:44Speaker 1: are really challenging.
- 55:45Speaker 3: So surprising how just turn on the locker. It kind
- 55:47Speaker 3: of settles everything down, gets rid of the drama. It
- 55:49Speaker 3: does you can get you can get through the obstacle
- 55:52Speaker 3: and then move on.
- 55:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:53Speaker 3: You know this is like you said, the travel, the
- 55:55Speaker 3: remote travel, it's it's not you're not doing it for sport.
- 55:58Speaker 1: No, So again that's adventure. Yeah, and you want to
- 56:00Speaker 1: get to the other end. You want to get your
- 56:01Speaker 1: family preserve the asset. Yeah, you want to get your
- 56:03Speaker 1: family to the other end. Quick note, because we're getting
- 56:06Speaker 1: to time here, Grenadier has announceder dealer network, so that's
- 56:09Speaker 1: exciting to see. It looks like they're going to have
- 56:12Speaker 1: deliveries as soon as the end of twenty twenty three.
- 56:16Speaker 1: So those that took the risk and put their deposits down,
- 56:19Speaker 1: I got the vehicle reserve, they're going to get them
- 56:21Speaker 1: pretty soon. The vehicle has performed, has exceeded my expectations.
- 56:25Speaker 2: In Africa.
- 56:26Speaker 1: We have not had any failures with the vehicle. Yeah,
- 56:29Speaker 1: so far it's just built clearly built for Africa. It's
- 56:31Speaker 1: performing well. So it'll see people. It'll be cool to
- 56:34Speaker 1: see people finally getting them in the US.
- 56:35Speaker 3: Yeah, and the reports from well Australia has a lot
- 56:39Speaker 3: of delivery.
- 56:40Speaker 1: That's right, so is South Africa and Europe's seeing deliveries.
- 56:44Speaker 1: So yeah, it seems like, and they've got some recent
- 56:46Speaker 1: updates that they did that, you know, just over this
- 56:50Speaker 1: at the dealership. Like anything else, they're continuing to update
- 56:53Speaker 1: the vehicle and offer new new options and just improve performance.
- 56:57Speaker 1: So that's good to see that in the Grenadier. But
- 57:00Speaker 1: any other new vehicles or new things that you wanted
- 57:03Speaker 1: to chat on, I think.
- 57:04Speaker 3: We've covered a lot. We've got another couple of drives
- 57:06Speaker 3: coming up. There's a GMC drive will be on in
- 57:09Speaker 3: a couple of weeks. Yeah, it's been a busy year
- 57:13Speaker 3: for new vehicles and vehicle launches.
- 57:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like the golden age of overland vehicles. We
- 57:20Speaker 1: thought for sure that was in the nineteen nineties with
- 57:22Speaker 1: an eighty series land Cruiser and it's been a land
- 57:25Speaker 1: Rover defender. But if you were to drive a three
- 57:27Speaker 1: hundred land Cruiser and compare it to an eighty series, like, yeah,
- 57:30Speaker 1: there's so much better now.
- 57:32Speaker 3: The one thing I've noticed is there's a lot more
- 57:34Speaker 3: vehicles that I think you could be completely fine driving
- 57:38Speaker 3: off the lot without. You know, it used to be okay,
- 57:41Speaker 3: we're gonna drive that. I'm gonna get that as a
- 57:43Speaker 3: platform and then I'm gonna swap out, I'm going to
- 57:45Speaker 3: re engineer everything and I'm going to add all these
- 57:47Speaker 3: things to it. And now it seems like the OEMs
- 57:50Speaker 3: have been listening and watching, and now you can do
- 57:53Speaker 3: so much more with the vehicle right off the lot
- 57:55Speaker 3: and just saves. It saves in long run, whether it's
- 57:58Speaker 3: time and effort. So look at that, like look at
- 58:01Speaker 3: that Bison Colorado thirty five. You need thirty fives and
- 58:04Speaker 3: lockers front rear and in an available winch. It's just
- 58:07Speaker 3: literally it's like unbelievable. And it's a snappy little truck. Yeah,
- 58:10Speaker 3: they're cool, three hundred horsepower, fun to drive, Yeah, three
- 58:13Speaker 3: hundred horse power. They're sweet. They're super super sweet. The
- 58:16Speaker 3: only interesting thing from a usability standpoint is they had
- 58:19Speaker 3: to take that that thirty five inch tire mounted in
- 58:23Speaker 3: the bed of the truck, so they actually came up
- 58:26Speaker 3: with a factory mount. It's vertical in the front driver's
- 58:31Speaker 3: side corner of the truck, so it's going to reduce
- 58:33Speaker 3: your capacity a little bit. When it comes to loading
- 58:37Speaker 3: things into the into the bed of the truck.
- 58:39Speaker 1: Somebody will come out with a swing out tire or
- 58:40Speaker 1: av will probably release a swing out tire carrier for
- 58:43Speaker 1: their bumper.
- 58:44Speaker 3: It didn't impact driving at all. You don't even notice
- 58:46Speaker 3: it that it's there.
- 58:47Speaker 1: Yeah, because it's behind the driver, so it doesn't block
- 58:49Speaker 1: the driver's view, right, or not much of it with the.
- 58:51Speaker 3: Red but from using the bed that was only No,
- 58:54Speaker 3: that's that's good.
- 58:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good, good feedback. A lot of consumers wind
- 58:58Speaker 2: up doing that anyway.
- 58:59Speaker 1: So well, things just keep getting more exciting in the
- 59:01Speaker 1: overland space, which is why we've announced this new overland
- 59:06Speaker 1: news segment of the podcast. So look for these to
- 59:08Speaker 1: come out about once a quarter. If you're looking for
- 59:11Speaker 1: the newest, most interesting stuff to come on the market
- 59:14Speaker 1: in the overland space. We're going to continue to provide these.
- 59:17Speaker 1: We'd love your feedback. You can reach me Scott dot
- 59:20Speaker 1: a dot Brady on Instagram or you can reach out
- 59:24Speaker 1: to Brian what's your Instagram at Vickers and what's your
- 59:29Speaker 1: what's your cell phone numbers? They can call you directly with.
- 59:31Speaker 2: Any questions and go to our website. So we also do.
- 59:36Speaker 3: We got the weekly newsletter, that's right, we do, and
- 59:39Speaker 3: we've got the news of the week on expedition portals.
- 59:42Speaker 2: That's true.
- 59:42Speaker 1: Yeah, go to go to Expedition Portal dot com for
- 59:44Speaker 1: the Overland news of the week, and then you can
- 59:46Speaker 1: also subscribe to our newsletter. If you go to Overland
- 59:50Speaker 1: Journal dot com you'll see the prompt to subscribe to
- 59:53Speaker 1: the newsletter or we do provide a lot of these
- 59:56Speaker 1: these updates too. But one of the things that we
- 59:58Speaker 1: want to do real quick is actually bring in the
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: cornerstone of the Overland Journal podcast, the person that makes
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: all of this possible, Paula Burr. Paula has been involved
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: with the podcast since almost the very beginning, a longtime
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: friend and Overland traveler. But the reason why we're bringing
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Paula on is one of the organizations that we really
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: believe in at Overland International is.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: The Rebel Rally.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: It is an incredible event that gives the opportunity for
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: travelers to go out and test their skills, their navigation
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: skills working as a team. They're not able to use
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: a GPS's is all paper map, compass, dead reckoning, triangulation,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: and operating usually mostly stock vehicles throughout really rugged terrain
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: in the United States West. So, Paula, congratulations on being
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: able to participate in the Rebel Rally.
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm really excited.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Well, we're excited to have you go because you have
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: had this as a bucket list item for a very
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: long time. And we were so lucky because Scott Brown
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: from JEEP reached out and said, hey, we think we've
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: got a slot in the Rebel Rally for someone to participate,
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: and I said, I've got just the right person. So
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: you get to check off a bucket list item. And
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: you've also been doing a bunch of training for it.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: So what are some of the things you've been doing
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: to prepare for the event.
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: I've been trying to do as much as possible. I
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: know it's not the full rally that I get to do,
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: but I would like to be prepared as much as possible.
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: So I've driven a couple places, and some plotting and
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: some road maps.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: And no, you've been doing great. Pot that's right, math
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: all the math. I remember you saying, Scott, I can't
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: math anymore right now. Yeah, but it's and you've gotten
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: a lot of help from people that are very experienced
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: with the event. Nina Barlow is a friend of both
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: of ours. She's been a big friend of the industry.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: She's been a hugely successful participant in the Rebel Rally.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: And if I remember, you went out to the Glamis
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Dunes and you've done some training with her there. You've
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: also done training in Sedona, and then recently you've been
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: working with some of her team on some of the
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: mapping and plotting. So what are you going to be
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: driving during the event.
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: I think it's a four y E a Jeep four
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: by E.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: Yeah, so a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon four by E I
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: believe is the one that you're going to be driving.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: And what a capable vehicle for that. And Jeep has
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: been a big supporter of the Rebel Rally and I'm
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: grateful for that too. I'm seeing a lot of manufacturers
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: participate in the event, which I think is a great
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: way to empower people to get out and explore in
