- 0:02Here today we're diving deep into a really mind bending
- 0:06conversation from the Joe Rogan Experience episode #1596.
- 0:11That's the one with Abby Loeb, the Harvard scientist.
- 0:13Exactly. And we're going to unpack his
- 0:15whole take on Ummua. You remember that first
- 0:19interstellar object detected passing through our solar system
- 0:22back in what was it, October 2017?
- 0:25Yeah, I remember wild stuff. Just think, something from
- 0:29another star system literally flew past our doorstep.
- 0:31Right. And what makes it so compelling
- 0:33and controversial is that it didn't really behave like we
- 0:36expected. Not at all.
- 0:37I mean, the standard assumptions, comet or asteroid,
- 0:39they just didn't quite fit, did they?
- 0:41Nope. So when they first spotted it,
- 0:43OK, sure, maybe it's a space rock.
- 0:44But then almost right away it starts throwing these curveballs
- 0:48like it swings close to the sun, which, you know, normally makes
- 0:51comet light up. Grow that tail.
- 0:53The classic cometary coma and tail.
- 0:55Yeah, made of gas and dust burning off the ice.
- 0:58But. Umamua nothing 0 tail.
- 1:01Zip. And that lack of a tail, that
- 1:03was like the first big anomaly because that outgassing that
- 1:06tail, making it also acts like a tiny rocket engine.
- 1:10Giving the comet a little. Push exactly a non gravitational
- 1:13push. Which brings us to the second
- 1:15weird thing. Umumua had this extra push, this
- 1:18acceleration away from the sun that gravity alone couldn't
- 1:21explain. Right, it was moving faster than
- 1:23it should have been based purely on the Sun's gravity.
- 1:25But with no visible engine, no tail, no out gassing to explain
- 1:30why it was getting that extra kick.
- 1:31So the push was there, but the expected cause wasn't.
- 1:35That's a major puzzle. And then there was the way it
- 1:37pumbled every 8 hours or so. The amount of sunlight it
- 1:40reflected changed massively, like by a factor of 10.
- 1:44A factor of 10 is huge. Yeah, that implies really
- 1:46extreme shape. Not spherical, not even potato
- 1:49shaped like many asteroids. Loeb suggests something maybe
- 1:53really flat, like a pancake, or extremely elongated, like a
- 1:56needle. He threw out the size comparison
- 1:59of maybe a football field long but potentially very, very thin.
- 2:03Imagine something like that, tumbling end over end.
- 2:06Sometimes you see the big flat side, lots of reflection,
- 2:09sometimes the thin edge, much less reflection.
- 2:12That explains the brightness variation.
- 2:14OK, so let's pause there. If it was a comet and it was
- 2:17outgassing enough to cause that push, how much stuff would it
- 2:21have had to lose? Load calculated it would need to
- 2:24shed about 10% of its total mass.
- 2:26That's a significant amount. And we should have seen that
- 2:28right? Like a cloud of gas and dust.
- 2:30Absolutely. The Spitzer Space Telescope,
- 2:32which is super sensitive to the heat signature of dust and gas,
- 2:36looked right at it. Nothing, Nada.
- 2:39No sign of the debris cloud that should have been there if it was
- 2:42a comet generating that push throughout gassing.
- 2:44OK, so just to recap for everyone, no tail.
- 2:48This mysterious extra push, a really bizarre extreme shape,
- 2:52and no evidence of the mass loss needed if it were a comic
- 2:55causing that push. That's the core set of
- 2:57anomalies. Which leads us directly to Obby
- 3:00lobes, let's say unconventional hypothesis.
- 3:02Right, he puts forward the idea. What if it's not natural?
- 3:06What if it's a piece of alien technology?
- 3:08Specifically, maybe something like a light sail?
- 3:10Exactly. A very thin, lightweight object
- 3:13designed to be pushed by the pressure of sunlight itself.
- 3:16Like a sail catching the wind but catching photons instead.
- 3:20Could sunlight pressure actually be enough to Causeway that
- 3:23observed acceleration? Loeb argues yes, if the object
- 3:27was extremely thin and had a large surface area relative to
- 3:30its mass, The mass works out, and critically, it explains the
- 3:34push without needing any outgassing.
- 3:36So it kind of neatly ticks both boxes, the push and the lack of
- 3:40a tail. It does.
- 3:41He even mentioned that sci-fi movie Sunlight as sort of an
- 3:45analogy. And he also brought up a real
- 3:46world example, didn't he, that object 2020 SO.
- 3:50Yes, 2020. SO that was fascinating.
- 3:53It showed a similar kind of gentle push from sunlight.
- 3:55No commentary activity and it. Turned out to be.
- 3:58A discarded rocket booster. A Centaur upper stage from the
- 4:01Survey Year 2 mission back in the 60s.
- 4:03Definitely artificial, hollow, lightweight, large surface area.
- 4:07So we have proof that human made objects can get pushed by
- 4:10sunlight in this way. We do.
- 4:11But lobe is clear. Umumua couldn't be ours.
- 4:13Why not? Because of its trajectory and
- 4:15speed. It came from interstellar space
- 4:18moving way too fast and was already heading out when we saw
- 4:22it. There's no way we could have
- 4:24launched something decades or centuries ago to meet it like
- 4:27that. It's not physically possible.
- 4:29So if it's artificial, it's not ours, which leaves.
- 4:32Extraterrestrial technology and suggesting that, well, that's
- 4:36where Loeb ran into significant pushback from the scientific
- 4:39community. Yeah, he tells the stories, kind
- 4:42of shocking actually, about a colleague who basically said he
- 4:46wished Umua had never been discovered.
- 4:48Wow, that really shows the level of discomfort, doesn't it?
- 4:52A resistance to even considering possibilities outside the
- 4:56standard framework. It seems like it.
- 4:58Loeb compares it to historical resistance, like people refusing
- 5:01to look through Galileo's telescope or the reaction to
- 5:04Giordano Bruno suggesting other stars have planets.
- 5:06History is full of examples where the establishment resisted
- 5:09ideas that turned out to be correct.
- 5:11It's a recurring pattern, unfortunately.
- 5:13Loeb's mantra seems to be keep your eyes on the ball, not on
- 5:16the audience. Just follow the data.
- 5:18And he seems genuinely surprised by the pushback, given that
- 5:22science is supposed to be about exploring the unknown.
- 5:25He uses a great analogy. If you're walking on a beach,
- 5:28find seashells, rocks, and then a plastic bottle, you
- 5:33immediately know the bottle is artificial.
- 5:34Of course it stands out because its properties are inconsistent
- 5:38with natural formation processes in that environment.
- 5:40So, he argues, if Umamua has properties inconsistent with
- 5:45known natural objects like comets and asteroids, why isn't
- 5:49artificial origin at least on the table for discussion?
- 5:52It's a fair question. He even floats the idea, maybe
- 5:55poetically, that it could be like a message in a bottle, a
- 5:58piece of defunct tech drifting through space.
- 6:01And this ties into his broader view that we should be more open
- 6:03to the idea that we're not alone and maybe not the smartest kid
- 6:07on the block, as he puts it. Well, statistically, given the
- 6:10sheer number of stars and potentially habitable planets,
- 6:13astronomers are finding, the idea that Earth is unique seems
- 6:16increasingly, well, arrogant. Maybe.
- 6:20Right. And if there are other
- 6:21civilizations, maybe more advanced ones, studying their
- 6:24artifacts, even their space junk could be incredibly valuable.
- 6:27We might learn something some. Argue advanced civilizations
- 6:31would just cocoon themselves in virtual realities, not caring
- 6:34about us. But Loeb counters that right
- 6:36using the biologist analogy. Yeah, he points out that we
- 6:39study insects meticulously. Why assume advanced aliens
- 6:42wouldn't find us or life like us interesting for some reason?
- 6:46And there's another angle, too. Maybe we can learn from their
- 6:48failures if we find remnants suggesting, say, a civilization
- 6:53that destroyed itself through nuclear war or climate change.
- 6:56That would be a sobering but potentially crucial lesson for
- 7:00our own future, though Loeb admits he's not super optimistic
- 7:04about our immediate future, given our tribalism and
- 7:06limitations. He really challenges the
- 7:08mainstream scientific approach here.
- 7:10He asks why is it OK to spend fortunes looking for faint
- 7:14biosignatures like oxygen on exoplanets, which aren't
- 7:17definitive proof of life anyway, right?
- 7:19Oxygen can be produced by non biological processes too.
- 7:22But it's almost taboo to seriously search for techno
- 7:25signatures, things like industrial pollution like CFCS
- 7:29in an atmosphere, or unnatural heat signatures or well, objects
- 7:34like umamua. Techno signatures would arguably
- 7:37be much less ambiguous evidence of intelligence, wouldn't they?
- 7:41Finding CFCS where they shouldn't exist naturally would
- 7:44be a smoking gun for industry. And he finds it weird this
- 7:47disconnect, speculative physics, extra dimensions, multiverse
- 7:51string theory gets huge funding, awards, prestige.
- 7:54Despite having 0 observational evidence, yeah, it's mostly
- 7:58theoretical elegance at this point.
- 8:00But searching for actual evidence of other technologies,
- 8:03something potentially observable, is often seen as
- 8:06fringe. It is a puzzling double
- 8:07standard. Low reminds us that even
- 8:09Einstein made mistakes, showing that what matters is whether an
- 8:12idea is testable, not just who proposes it or how smart they
- 8:16sound. He insists he's just treating
- 8:18Umumu as an anomaly following the evidence, and he's ready to
- 8:20change his mind if new evidence points to a natural explanation.
- 8:24And he pushes back hard against the idea that because there's a
- 8:27lot of nonsense around UFO's and stuff, we shouldn't do serious
- 8:31science on potential extraterrestrial signals or
- 8:34artifacts. His analogy was great.
- 8:36Just because people wrote fictional stories about COVID
- 8:39didn't mean scientists stopped working on vaccines.
- 8:41Exactly. The existence of pseudoscience
- 8:44shouldn't shut down legitimate scientific inquiry.
- 8:48It's like, as he said, stepping on the grass and concluding it
- 8:51won't grow because you're preventing it from doing so.
- 8:53So why the resistance? He suggests.
- 8:56Maybe it's just fear of ridicule and academia looking foolish.
- 9:00That seems plausible. Academia can be conservative.
- 9:03He mentioned Otto Struve suggesting exoplanets back in
- 9:051952 and being basically ignored for decades until we actually
- 9:09found them in the 90s. History repeating itself, maybe?
- 9:12He also noted that the commercial sector sometimes
- 9:14seems more willing to fund blue sky high risk research than
- 9:17universities are. That's an interesting
- 9:19observation. Maybe less constrained by peer
- 9:21review politics sometimes. He did say his interest in
- 9:24anomalies is nothing new, but yeah, the alien topic is
- 9:27uniquely sensitive compared to to say, the early universe.
- 9:30And just to ground this, he shared his background, grew up
- 9:33on a farm, studied philosophy, military service, physics,
- 9:37worked on SDI, then astrophysics at Princeton, chaired Harvard's
- 9:42astronomy department. Yeah, he's got the credentials.
- 9:44He's not some random person off the street.
- 9:46He's coming at this from a deep scientific background.
- 9:49Definitely. So back to Umua itself.
- 9:52Key facts Speed over 50 kilometers.
- 9:55Way faster than solar system objects.
- 9:58Clearly interstellar. Found by Pan Stars in Hawaii,
- 10:00the name means scout or messenger from afar.
- 10:03Kind of fitting. And importantly, contrasted with
- 10:06Borissov, the second interstellar object found later,
- 10:09Borissov looked and acted exactly like a comet should.
- 10:12Which just makes Umumua stand out even more.
- 10:14Precisely. Borissov was the confirmation of
- 10:17what we expected interstellar comets to look like.
- 10:19Umua was not that. And the Spitzer telescope not
- 10:22detecting heat helped pin down on its size football field range
- 10:26and implied it must be quite shiny, highly reflective to be
- 10:28seen at all without giving off heat.
- 10:30Some asteroids are shiny sure, but Loeb's point is none have
- 10:34that combination of extreme shape, high reflectivity and the
- 10:38non gravitational push without out gassing.
- 10:41OK, So what about the natural explanations astronomers have
- 10:44proposed? Loeb addresses those right?
- 10:46He does things like the dust Bunny idea, a super fluffy low
- 10:50density aggregate, but that struggles with the inferred size
- 10:53and shininess. The hydrogen iceberg.
- 10:55The idea is that solid hydrogen is transparent when it's
- 10:58sublimates, so no visible tail. But the problem is hydrogen
- 11:02would evaporate incredibly quickly from Starlight, even in
- 11:05deep space. It likely wouldn't survive the
- 11:08journey or the past near the sun.
- 11:10What about it being a piece of a planet or moon shredded by a
- 11:13star? That tends to produce elongated
- 11:16fragments, yes, but maybe not something so thin and cohesive
- 11:20the models don't quite match Umumu's inferred properties
- 11:24perfectly. And we need to be clear, we
- 11:25don't have a photo of it, do we? No, absolutely not.
- 11:28It was just a point of light in the telescopes, too small and
- 11:30far away to resolve any shape. All the property, shape,
- 11:33reflectivity, push are inferred from the light, curve and
- 11:36trajectory data. Loeb also mentions something
- 11:39pretty revealing that other scientists privately agree with
- 11:41him that it's weird, but won't say so publicly.
- 11:44Yeah, he says many colleagues have told him privately that
- 11:47they find the natural explanations lacking, but
- 11:50they're hesitant to publicly associate with the alien
- 11:53hypothesis. Fear of career damage, perhaps?
- 11:56That leads back to the core issue, the pushback.
- 11:59People say it's never aliens, but Loeb asks why is that the
- 12:03default when the natural explanations seem increasingly
- 12:06contrived? It's a challenge to the
- 12:08scientific status quo. He also briefly mentioned things
- 12:11like the Commander David Fraver UAP incident.
- 12:13The tic tac video guy. Right.
- 12:15Suggesting the scientific community should be applying its
- 12:17tools, proper instruments, rigorous analysis to these
- 12:20unexplained phenomena instead of just dismissing them.
- 12:23Because science should be about evidence, not assumptions or
- 12:26taboos. Exactly, his argument isn't I'm
- 12:28100% right, it's aliens. It's more the possibility is
- 12:33strong enough based on the anomalies that we should be
- 12:36openly discussing it and actively looking for more
- 12:38evidence. It's that unique combination of
- 12:41features again. The shape, the push, the lack of
- 12:44tail, the reflectivity, the speed, the origin all together.
- 12:48Yeah, finding a natural explanation that convincingly
- 12:51explains all of those simultaneously has proven very
- 12:54difficult. And he says his motivation isn't
- 12:57just about umumua, but about creating a more open
- 13:00intellectual climate, especially for younger scientists.
- 13:03Yes, encouraging them not to shy away from anomalies or
- 13:06unconventional ideas just because they might be
- 13:09controversial. It's that contrast again.
- 13:11OK to speculate wildly about string theory, but not OK to
- 13:15discuss potential techno signatures based on actual,
- 13:19albeit puzzling, observations. It seems inconsistent to him,
- 13:23and he clarifies again. He's not saying Umua was
- 13:25necessarily a working spaceship. Maybe just debris?
- 13:28A defunct probe part? A sail fragment.
- 13:31Still artificial though. Still artificial in origin.
- 13:33Yes, that's the key distinction he's making.
- 13:35OK, so he systematically goes through the natural explanations
- 13:38dust Bunny, H2, iceberg Shard and points out the flaws in
- 13:42each. Right, highlighting why none of
- 13:44them seem to be a perfect fit for all the data we have.
- 13:46And reminds us again it was just reflected sunlight, a point
- 13:50source, no actual picture. Correct all inferences.
- 13:53And the private support from colleagues who are afraid to
- 13:56speak out. He finds that situation quite
- 13:59sad. Understandably, it suggests a
- 14:01problem within the scientific culture.
- 14:02Perhaps. But he also notes the huge
- 14:05public interest. Yeah, he seems to think the
- 14:07public is actually more open minded about this than many
- 14:10scientists. He feels the public is starved
- 14:12for this kind of discussion about our place in the cosmos,
- 14:15which is why his work got so much attention.
- 14:17And he still seems genuinely baffled by the strong negative
- 14:21reactions from some colleagues, given he sees his approach as
- 14:24just common sense based on the data.
- 14:27He does float possibilities like professional jealousy or maybe
- 14:30just resistance to ideas coming from outside a specific clique.
- 14:35Human factors in science. Ultimately, it comes down to
- 14:38those big questions. Are we alone?
- 14:40Are we the smartest? And the only way to answer them
- 14:42is evidence. Keep looking, keep an open mind.
- 14:46He urges modesty, comparing the resistance to how Galileo was
- 14:49treated. And public opinion does seem to
- 14:52be shifting, doesn't it? More people seem willing to
- 14:54entertain the possibility of extraterrestrial life may be
- 14:57partly due to those more credible UAP reports lately.
- 15:00Possibly. Loeb himself used to be
- 15:03skeptical of anecdotal UFO stuff, but the sheer number of
- 15:06planets now known combined with anomalies like Umua makes the
- 15:11scientific question more pressing.
- 15:13What about the Fermi paradox? Where is everybody?
- 15:16Lobid suggests maybe signals are faint, or maybe we haven't
- 15:20looked long enough for with the right tools.
- 15:22He uses the analogy of gravitational waves.
- 15:25People were skeptical for decades until LIGO reached the
- 15:28necessary sensitivity. Or maybe depressingly, advanced
- 15:32civilizations don't last long. That's another possibility.
- 15:36But even if they're extinct, he argues, we could still find
- 15:38their relics. Space archaeology, he calls it a
- 15:41fascinating concept. It really stretches your
- 15:43imagination thinking about what alien life or tech could even be
- 15:47like. We're so stuck in our Earth
- 15:48based perspective, right? He used an analogy of different
- 15:51cakes made from the same ingredients.
- 15:53The chemistry might be universal, but the forms life
- 15:56takes could be wildly diverse. Maybe even non territorial
- 15:59intelligence like his orca example.
- 16:02Civilizations totally unlike human societies.
- 16:05It's all speculation, but it opens up possibilities.
- 16:08He also mentioned a debate on militarizing space.
- 16:10Arguing against it, right? Saying exploration should unify
- 16:13us. Exactly.
- 16:14He sees space science as a potential global collaboration
- 16:18far more valuable than trying to achieve military dominance up
- 16:21there. And quoting Reagan, even
- 16:23suggesting finding ET could unite humanity.
- 16:26It's a hopeful thought, yeah. If we actually had undeniable
- 16:30contact, what would we even do? Loeb emphasizes.
- 16:34Just listening first. But we don't have a plan, do we?
- 16:37As a species, it would likely be chaos.
- 16:40Probably a very mixed reaction globally, he quoted Oscar Wilde.
- 16:43We are all in the gutters, but some of us are looking at the
- 16:45stars. He had that funny line too about
- 16:47aliens saying take us to your leader and having a say.
- 16:50I'll wait till January 20th A. Little political humor there.
- 16:53But his serious point is we've already been shouting into the
- 16:56void with our radio waves, even powerful military radar.
- 17:00We're not exactly hiding. He hopes if anyone visits,
- 17:03they're like anthropologists of space, wise enough to understand
- 17:07us. But he also brings up the
- 17:09cautionary tale of colonization on Earth.
- 17:11Encounters between technologically disparate
- 17:14societies haven't always gone well for the less advanced one.
- 17:17So keep an open mind, but maybe be a little cautious too.
- 17:21Seems prudent. Be open to discovery but aware
- 17:25of potential complexities. He's not a big sci-fi fan,
- 17:27generally finds the physics often wrong.
- 17:29Yeah, though he liked Gravity and The Martian for being a bit
- 17:32more grounded and mentioned the Ex Machina creators.
- 17:35Upcoming Alien film sounded interesting.
- 17:38But he acknowledges sci-fi can help expand our thinking.
- 17:41Absolutely. It primes the imagination for
- 17:43possibilities science hasn't reached yet.
- 17:45Circling back to UA PS, he did express some skepticism about
- 17:49older reports lacking clear images given modern cameras
- 17:52wonders about instrument glitches.
- 17:54But he strongly advocates for scientifically investigating the
- 17:57recent credible reports, like the Navy ones, using proper
- 18:00sensors for science and for national security.
- 18:04He suggested putting instruments right where the sightings
- 18:06happened, like near the Nimitz groups in counter zone.
- 18:09Believing that if we apply rigorous science, we can figure
- 18:13out what these things are. If, hypothetically, the
- 18:16president gave him funding, what would he do?
- 18:19Assemble top scientists. Deploy the best instruments,
- 18:22Collect data openly, publish everything transparently.
- 18:26Focus on cases like Fravors. Address the national security
- 18:29angle seriously. Definitely discussed funding
- 18:32options to government. Private sector, like Musk,
- 18:36seemed open to collaboration. And then he coined that term Uma
- 18:39Mua's wager. Yeah, like Pascal's Wager for
- 18:42God, the potential payoff of finding extraterrestrial
- 18:45intelligence is so immense. Even if the probability seems
- 18:48low now that it's worth investing resources to look, the
- 18:52potential downside of not looking and missing it is huge.
- 18:55And the public interest is huge. He cited massive online
- 18:58readership for articles about his work.
- 19:00People are fascinated. He mentioned Carl Sagan, another
- 19:02popularizer of science who was briefly at Harvard near him.
- 19:05Building on that legacy, perhaps.
- 19:07Loebus stressed his focus is the science, but the public
- 19:11conversation is vital. Hoping his work is just a first
- 19:14step toward the bigger understanding of our cosmic
- 19:17neighborhood. He found it interesting his
- 19:18paper blew up right around a State of the Union address.
- 19:22Maybe people crave bigger, more hopeful news.
- 19:24Perhaps a sense that humanity could have a better future, and
- 19:28maybe he's seeing we're not alone could inspire that.
- 19:31And he comes back to the resistance from colleagues
- 19:33believing it's rooted in fear or jealousy, not solid science.
- 19:38Using quantum mechanics as an example.
- 19:40Initially bizarre and resisted even by Einstein, but proven
- 19:44true by experiment. The ultimate test is reality.
- 19:47You have to test your ideas against observation.
- 19:50That's the core of the scientific method he's
- 19:52championing. Well, Avi Loeb certainly gives
- 19:54you a lot to think about. It's a fascinating perspective,
- 19:57pushing the boundaries of conventional thought.
- 19:58It really is. And his willingness to challenge
- 20:01the status quo but grounding it in data and scientific reasoning
- 20:06is what makes it so compelling. It really encourages you to keep
- 20:08an open mind. Yeah, the whole Umumua story,
- 20:11the object itself and the reaction to Loeb's ideas.
- 20:14It tells you a lot about how science works, the human side of
- 20:17it, and just the power of curiosity.
- 20:20Hopefully this deep dive has sparked some of that curiosity
