- 0:27Speaker 1: a bit surprised by the reaction that many of you
- 0:31Speaker 1: are having to my reaction of this story the Saints
- 0:36Speaker 1: to catch you up effectively, the Saints have not hired
- 0:40Speaker 1: a coach yet, and it seems like they're They're still
- 0:44Speaker 1: going to continue conversations after the Super Bowl, and the
- 0:48Speaker 1: reaction from some has been met. They can't hire a
- 0:51Speaker 1: coach until after the Super Bowl, right, They can't formally
- 0:55Speaker 1: hire a coach until after the Super Bowl. It is, however,
- 0:58Speaker 1: very common practice to have a deal in place with
- 1:02Speaker 1: coaches that you intend to hire before their season ends.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I will point your attention to one year ago with
- 1:11Speaker 1: the New Orleans Saints on February the second, which was
- 1:16Speaker 1: the Friday of the Senior Bowl. There Kattrell ESPN dot
- 1:23Speaker 1: Com February second, twenty twenty four. Saints planned to hire
- 1:27Speaker 1: forty nine ers Clint Kubiak, as OC sources say, all right,
- 1:33Speaker 1: it is right there. February second. Oh, by the way,
- 1:37Speaker 1: Kubiak was coaching the Niners in the Super Bowl. Chefter
- 1:40Speaker 1: reported it. So it's very common that happens. I had
- 1:45Speaker 1: somebody on Twitter say, well, they can't because you get
- 1:47Speaker 1: hit with tampering, and you know you can lose a
- 1:49Speaker 1: draft pick like what happened with the Eagles and Cardinals
- 1:51Speaker 1: last year. No no, no, no, no, no pay attention.
- 1:59Speaker 1: A year year ago, Arizona and Philly swapped third round
- 2:06Speaker 1: picks because the Cardinals tampered. What they did was they
- 2:12Speaker 1: had a phone call with Jonathan Gannon during the no
- 2:17Speaker 1: contact period that violated the NFL's anti tampering policy having
- 2:24Speaker 1: that contact during the no contact period. There is a
- 2:27Speaker 1: period in which teams can go talk to coaches even
- 2:31Speaker 1: though we're still coaching. That's why the Saints flew to
- 2:35Speaker 1: Philadelphia on Monday and talked to Kellen Moore. There's a
- 2:42Speaker 1: period where you can speak to a coach who is
- 2:45Speaker 1: still coaching. It's how this process has to go. The
- 2:48Speaker 1: Cardinals a year ago had a phone call with Gannon
- 2:53Speaker 1: during an impermissible time their GM, apologized for it, acknowledged
- 2:58Speaker 1: of mistakes the two teams he called the Bidwells apologized.
- 3:01Speaker 1: The two teams made an agreement, and they essentially just
- 3:04Speaker 1: swapped picks in the third round. There is nothing, nothing
- 3:10Speaker 1: to prohibit the Saints during their conversations with Kellen Moore
- 3:15Speaker 1: to offer him the job. Nothing. He cannot formally accept
- 3:22Speaker 1: and become the Saints coach until after the season's over,
- 3:23Speaker 1: which would be after the Super Bowl a week from Sunday,
- 3:26Speaker 1: but schefter can still report it, or whoever those people
- 3:28Speaker 1: are that would report it. There's nothing to prefer. This
- 3:31Speaker 1: is commonplace. So today all that's set up to tell
- 3:38Speaker 1: you what happened today. Diana Rossini, very reputable at the
- 3:43Speaker 1: Senior Bowl and on her podcast, reported that none of
- 3:48Speaker 1: the Saints candidates as of now, have been told they're
- 3:51Speaker 1: out of the running, which would suggest there isn't a
- 3:54Speaker 1: final answer. Rassini also reported that the scuttle butt her word,
- 4:01Speaker 1: is that Kellen Moore may not want the job quote
- 4:03Speaker 1: due to the fact that the Saints don't have a
- 4:05Speaker 1: quarterback in place. She went on to say later that
- 4:07Speaker 1: Kellen Moore, however, may have come around to the job anyway.
- 4:10Speaker 1: So that was Diana Rossini on her podcast. A few
- 4:14Speaker 1: hours later. On Friday, Tom Pella Sero reports that the
- 4:20Speaker 1: New Orleans Saints still have not made a decision on
- 4:24Speaker 1: who they're going to hire, and that they plan to
- 4:27Speaker 1: speak to Kellen Moore again after the Super Bowl. I mean,
- 4:37Speaker 1: all of that is to suggest they haven't made their choice.
- 4:42Speaker 1: They could be leaning toward Kellen Moore, and Kellen Moore
- 4:46Speaker 1: may still be the guy. As a matter of fact,
- 4:48Speaker 1: if you made me guess today, of course I think
- 4:50Speaker 1: he's the guy, because if he wasn't and they were
- 4:52Speaker 1: sold on Rizzy or Kafka, they could have hired him already.
- 4:55Speaker 1: The one guy they're waiting on Hisham. So okay, But
- 5:00Speaker 1: the problem I have is the indecision. And you could
- 5:06Speaker 1: say to me, well, Matt, it's a big it's a
- 5:08Speaker 1: big decision. It's a that they're making. Here, take your time,
- 5:11Speaker 1: do it right, Okay? What more do you need? If
- 5:17Speaker 1: there's no new candidates in the same that's the Saint
- 5:22Speaker 1: to have said that they're not interviewing anybody else. They've
- 5:24Speaker 1: got their list. Okay, you had a virtual call, and
- 5:31Speaker 1: you flew up to Philly and had a nine hour
- 5:33Speaker 1: face to face into the wee hours of Tuesday morning
- 5:36Speaker 1: with Kellen Moore. What more are you going to ask him?
- 5:42Speaker 1: I can't imagine. Now. I never hired an NFL head coach,
- 5:47Speaker 1: but I have hired people before, and I fired people before.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I cannot imagine again. I'm not hiring people paying a
- 5:54Speaker 1: million dollars to be a coach in the NFL. But
- 5:57Speaker 1: I cannot imagine what what else you could possibly ask
- 6:02Speaker 1: someone after a nine hour interview? That is stunning to me.
- 6:10Speaker 1: In this reeks of indecision. I mean, damn it, make
- 6:15Speaker 1: your decision, be convicted about it, and go. I would
- 6:20Speaker 1: rather the Saints have decided after that nine hour interview
- 6:24Speaker 1: that they were bullish on Kellen Moore. This is our guy.
- 6:28Speaker 1: You have the silent deal done, You leak it to
- 6:30Speaker 1: schefter who says sources say they're leaning intoward hiring Kellen Moore,
- 6:34Speaker 1: and then boom, it's done after the super Bowl. Formally,
- 6:38Speaker 1: what I don't like is after that Tuesday here you
- 6:45Speaker 1: are seventy two hours later and reports are coming out
- 6:48Speaker 1: that maybe he don't want you but might be coming
- 6:50Speaker 1: around on it a little bit. But then the Saints
- 6:53Speaker 1: still want to talk to him, but it could be
- 6:54Speaker 1: someone else, and they haven't told anybody they're out of
- 6:56Speaker 1: the running. Like all of that suggests a bit of
- 7:00Speaker 1: a circus around this thing. And it's not to say
- 7:03Speaker 1: you won't get it right, or you can't end up
- 7:05Speaker 1: getting a right or he won't work or any of
- 7:06Speaker 1: that stuff. It just shows a lack of organization. It shows,
- 7:16Speaker 1: I mean, go back to what Mickey Loomis said when
- 7:20Speaker 1: this job came open, and I know a lot of
- 7:22Speaker 1: people have parodied him for it and spoofed him for
- 7:24Speaker 1: it when he said, well, that's one of thirty two jobs.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah it is. Isn't that why people should be leaping
- 7:31Speaker 1: at the opportunity. But when Joe Brady tells you no,
- 7:36Speaker 1: and Cliff Kingsbury decides to stay in Washington instead of
- 7:39Speaker 1: taking your job, and Kellen Moore may not think it's
- 7:42Speaker 1: the right situation, like you continue to have coordinators tell
- 7:46Speaker 1: you they're not bullish on your job. Otherwise they'd all
- 7:52Speaker 1: be lining up begging to take it. Instead you got
- 7:55Speaker 1: guys that you were interested in talking to saying we're
- 7:57Speaker 1: not interested in talking. It's just it feels like it again.
- 8:13Speaker 1: This very well may and probably will end with him
- 8:16Speaker 1: hiring Kellen Moore after the Super Bowl, but it it
- 8:22Speaker 1: feels very much and looks very much externally like an
- 8:28Speaker 1: organization that can't make a decision, especially because the people
- 8:35Speaker 1: they thought they were going to hire have told them no.
- 8:40Speaker 1: With Aaron Glenn going to the Jets, Joe Brady deciding
- 8:44Speaker 1: to stay in Buffalo, you don't get an interview with Kingsbury.
- 8:48Speaker 1: He's staying put. So you have a pair down list
- 8:50Speaker 1: of guys that were down your initial list, and now
- 8:53Speaker 1: you got to decide and they can't make a decision.
- 8:57Speaker 1: That's not a great feeling from a leadership standpoint. I
- 9:01Speaker 1: feel like that's where the Saints are right now. Oh
- 9:04Speaker 1: just sit and keep waiting, Like, how do so many
- 9:10Speaker 1: of you don't understand this, like how this works? I mean,
- 9:14Speaker 1: I'm not trying to point fingers of it, like, but
- 9:17Speaker 1: I'm genuinely surprised by the amount of people pushing back, like, well,
- 9:20Speaker 1: they can't hire me to laugh for the Super Bowl
- 9:23Speaker 1: right formally, but I just gave you an example a
- 9:27Speaker 1: year ago with this organization and they're doing this exact
- 9:30Speaker 1: thing with the coach that was coach in the Super Bowl.
- 9:34Speaker 1: You have the deal in place, the league at the schefter,
- 9:36Speaker 1: and then they're formally announced after the Super Bowl because
- 9:39Speaker 1: they don't have their answer yet. And that's a problem.
