- 0:00Speaker 1: On December 15th, 1940, Mutual Broadcasting System carried episode 206
- 0:06Speaker 1: of The Shadow, sponsored by Blue Coal. In The Killer's Rendezvous,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Lamont Cranston and Margot Lane are passengers aboard a commercial
- 0:16Speaker 1: flight forced down by a storm. Their unplanned stop at
- 0:20Speaker 1: a roadside inn brings them among stranded travelers, a gunshot,
- 0:25Speaker 1: a dead man, and a stolen case of jewels. Cranston
- 0:29Speaker 1: begins following the clues behind the affair. William Johnstone stars
- 0:35Speaker 1: as Lamont Cranston and the Shadow, with Marjorie Anderson as
- 0:38Speaker 1: Margot Lane, in a script by Jerry Devine. And now,
- 0:43Speaker 1: we return to the original broadcast.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
- 1:13Speaker 2: The Shadow knows.
- 1:18Speaker 3: .
- 1:18Speaker 2: .
- 1:21Speaker 4: The shadow, a mysterious character who aids the forces
- 1:30Speaker 4: of law and order, is in reality Lamont Cranston, a
- 1:34Speaker 4: wealthy young man about town. As the shadow, Cranston is
- 1:38Speaker 4: gifted with hypnotic power to cloud men's minds so that
- 1:41Speaker 4: they cannot see. Cranston's friend and companion, the lovely Margot Lane,
- 1:46Speaker 4: is the only person who knows to whom the voice
- 1:48Speaker 4: of the invisible shadow belongs.
- 1:51Speaker 5: Today's story, The Killer's Rendezvous.
- 1:54Speaker 6: The Killer's Rendezvous.
- 2:00Speaker 4: We find Margo and Lamont flying westward high above the
- 2:02Speaker 4: clouds in a silver-winged passenger plane.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Oh, dear.
- 2:11Speaker 5: Bored, Margo?
- 2:12Speaker 6: Oh, no. No, not at all, Lamont.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Perhaps you'd like to play a little game.
- 2:17Speaker 7: You mean cards? No, just the pastime that I've been
- 2:20Speaker 7: indulging in for the last 15 minutes. Well, what is it, Lamont? Well,
- 2:24Speaker 7: it has to do with our fellow passengers.
- 2:26Speaker 6: Oh, good.
- 2:26Speaker 8: Sounds interesting.
- 2:28Speaker 7: I've been watching their mannerisms and behavior, trying to guess
- 2:31Speaker 7: just what sort of persons they are and what they do.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Oh, that sounds like fun.
- 2:35Speaker 6: Well, what have you discovered so far?
- 2:37Speaker 7: Well, my number one exhibit is that tall, heavyset chap
- 2:40Speaker 7: sitting just across the aisle. How would you classify him, Margo?
- 2:45Speaker 9: Oh, now, that's not fair, Lamont.
- 2:47Speaker 4: You've got a head start.
- 2:48Speaker 6: Well, tell me your deduction.
- 2:50Speaker 7: All right. He's a graduate of State University, class of 32.
- 2:55Speaker 5: He's married, has.
- 2:57Speaker 7: Two children, and he sells jewelry, precious gems.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Now, just a minute, Mr.
- 3:01Speaker 9: Holmes.
- 3:01Speaker 6: How did you find all that out?
- 3:03Speaker 5: Oh, very simple, my dear Watson.
- 3:04Speaker 7: In fact, elementary. Oh, please, Lamont.
- 3:07Speaker 6: Tell me, how did you learn all that?
- 3:08Speaker 10: Why should I divulge my secrets of the trade?
- 3:11Speaker 8: Oh, now, stop it.
- 3:12Speaker 7: Come on, Lamont, tell me. Well, I shouldn't do this.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Well, how did you know about the university?
- 3:17Speaker 5: The class ring on his finger. I noticed it when
- 3:20Speaker 5: he reached back for his wallet.
- 3:22Speaker 4: And the family?
- 3:23Speaker 5: Their picture fell out of the wallet when.
- 3:24Speaker 3: He opened it.
- 3:25Speaker 10: And his profession?
- 3:26Speaker 7: That tiny leather case that he's holding so nervously under
- 3:29Speaker 7: his arm. That type of case is carried.
- 3:31Speaker 5: By jewel salesmen.
- 3:33Speaker 6: Lamont, you're very good.
- 3:35Speaker 7: Well, let's hear about some of the others now. Well, uh,
- 3:38Speaker 7: that man sitting directly in front of our jewel salesman is, uh.
- 3:43Speaker 5: He's a bit more difficult.
- 3:44Speaker 10: Why's that?
- 3:45Speaker 7: He's a fussy old gent.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Bit of a hypochondriac, I'd say.
- 3:50Speaker 7: He's been constantly having the stewardess fetch him glasses of water,
- 3:53Speaker 7: which he uses to down the endless succession of pills.
- 3:56Speaker 6: Well, maybe he's an invalid.
- 3:58Speaker 7: I don't think so. Something puzzling about him.
- 4:02Speaker 5: That old man appears to be constantly.
- 4:04Speaker 7: Watching for something. Waiting for something to happen.
- 4:08Speaker 6: Ah, intrigue. Well, what do you suppose is going to happen?
- 4:11Speaker 7: You really want to know? Mm-hmm. Nothing. Oh, now, might
- 4:15Speaker 7: you spoil everything. Now, wait a minute.
- 4:18Speaker 6: That leaves only two more passengers.
- 4:20Speaker 4: What about those two up in the front seat?
- 4:23Speaker 5: Ah, now you've come to something. I've been saving them
- 4:25Speaker 5: for my climax.
- 4:26Speaker 6: What do you mean?
- 4:27Speaker 7: If you'd noticed them more closely, Margo, when they boarded
- 4:30Speaker 7: the plane, you'd have seen that they were handcuffed to
- 4:32Speaker 7: each other. What? Evidently, they're detective and his prisoner on
- 4:36Speaker 7: their way to the state penitentiary.
- 4:37Speaker 6: Well, of all things, I'd never have suspected.
- 4:40Speaker 10: Say.
- 4:41Speaker 7: Why? Look, the stewardess is coming through the plane giving
- 4:44Speaker 7: instructions to the other passengers.
- 4:46Speaker 5: I wonder what's up.
- 4:48Speaker 6: I'll know in a second.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Here she comes.
- 4:50Speaker 7: Pretty thing, isn't she?
- 4:51Speaker 8: Eyes front, Oscar.
- 4:54Speaker 6: I wonder if you would mind adjusting your safety belt, please.
- 4:56Speaker 6: We're going to land soon.
- 4:58Speaker 5: Are we nearing the city?
- 4:59Speaker 6: No, but we've gotten word of a severe storm ahead,
- 5:02Speaker 6: so we're landing at another field until it blows over.
- 5:04Speaker 8: Just a precaution.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Very well.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Oh, Lamont, I hope we're not delayed too long.
- 5:08Speaker 7: That seems to be the feeling that you share with
- 5:10Speaker 7: our fellow passengers. Judging by their appearance.
- 5:13Speaker 5: They're not pleased with it either.
- 5:15Speaker 9: I noticed that.
- 5:16Speaker 5: Well, one thing, Margo.
- 5:18Speaker 7: If we are grounded for long, we'll be with some
- 5:20Speaker 7: very interesting companions.
- 5:29Speaker 6: I'm very sorry to have to tell all of you
- 5:36Speaker 6: that word has just come through that we'll probably be
- 5:39Speaker 6: grounded for the night.
- 5:40Speaker 7: Now, what's this?
- 5:41Speaker 3: What's this?
- 5:41Speaker 10: Grounded for the night? Why, that's an outrage. An outrage. Stewardess,
- 5:46Speaker 10: fetch me some water. Let's take a pill at once.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Your fussy old man is running true to type, Lamont.
- 5:51Speaker 7: Yes.
- 5:51Speaker 3: We can't stay in this little hangar all night.
- 5:54Speaker 7: My jewel salesman is provoked too, Margo.
- 5:56Speaker 9: Yes, you know, the only ones who seem unpopular... That's
- 5:58Speaker 9: for the detective and his prisoners.
- 5:59Speaker 7: Yes. Please, gentlemen.
- 6:01Speaker 10: Oh, wait. The stewardess wants to talk. We might as
- 6:03Speaker 10: well hear what she's got to say.
- 6:05Speaker 6: Thank you. We've arranged for a car to come here.
- 6:08Speaker 6: It's outside now. I don't suppose it can get very
- 6:10Speaker 6: far in this storm, but it can take you all
- 6:13Speaker 6: to a small inn up the road.
- 6:14Speaker 10: Take us to an inn? You mean we're spending the
- 6:16Speaker 10: night around here, is that it?
- 6:17Speaker 3: Is that what I understand?
- 6:18Speaker 8: I'm afraid you'll have to.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Oh, no, I.
- 6:20Speaker 6: Oh, we've gotten word that all roads leading to any
- 6:22Speaker 6: of the towns are flooded.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Well, I've got to get through.
- 6:24Speaker 7: I can't spend the night here. Well, it doesn't look
- 6:27Speaker 7: as if we have much choice. No, I think we
- 6:29Speaker 7: should all make the best of it. Perhaps we'd better
- 6:31Speaker 7: introduce ourselves. I'm Lamont Cranston, and this is Miss Lane.
- 6:35Speaker 10: How do you do? Cranston and Lane. Cranston and Lane.
- 6:37Speaker 10: My name's Carson. It's almost the same. I made a poem,
- 6:40Speaker 10: didn't I?
- 6:40Speaker 8: That's a hard one.
- 6:42Speaker 10: Where's that girl with my water?
- 6:43Speaker 7: I've got to take my pill.
- 6:44Speaker 10: It's nice to have met both of you.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Well, my name is Waterman. I'm happy to meet all
- 6:47Speaker 3: of you.
- 6:47Speaker 10: Same here, same here.
- 6:48Speaker 5: I'm sorry that you're not able to get through, Mr.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Waterman.
- 6:50Speaker 5: Yes, yes, it's quite upsetting.
- 6:51Speaker 3: I have a delivery to make, you see, a most
- 6:53Speaker 3: important one.
- 6:54Speaker 5: I have it here with me in this case.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Oh.
- 6:57Speaker 7: Well, if it's something of value, Mr. Waterman, perhaps you
- 7:01Speaker 7: could leave it here in the place. Oh, no, no, no, no.
- 7:04Speaker 3: I'll carry it with me. Thank you.
- 7:05Speaker 8: What about the detective and the prisoner, Lamont?
- 7:07Speaker 7: Oh, yes. I didn't get your name, gentlemen.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Our names? Yes. We're just two guys named Smith.
- 7:21Speaker 6: Here's your glass of water, Mr. Carson.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Now, what kept you? What kept you?
- 7:25Speaker 10: Oh, I don't feel like a pill now. And don't
- 7:27Speaker 10: tell me I look like one.
- 7:28Speaker 6: Well, then, the car's waiting, folks.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Oh, thank you. I guess we'd better get it going.
- 7:32Speaker 5: Come on, Margo.
- 7:33Speaker 8: Right-o.
- 7:35Speaker 5: Do you know something, Margo?
- 7:36Speaker 6: What?
- 7:38Speaker 7: I have a feeling that this is not going to
- 7:40Speaker 7: be a dull evening.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Well, I guess we've.
- 7:58Speaker 7: Reached our destination.
- 7:59Speaker 10: Is that where we're spending the night, that place?
- 8:01Speaker 5: I guess so.
- 8:02Speaker 6: Cheerful looking spot. What there is left of it.
- 8:05Speaker 10: Yeah, the woman's right.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Cheerful.
- 8:07Speaker 10: I hope she was being sarcastic.
- 8:08Speaker 5: It appears to be some sort of a roadhouse.
- 8:10Speaker 3: You see the sign above the door?
- 8:12Speaker 7: The rendezvous?
- 8:13Speaker 10: Rendezvous. Rendezvous. Sounds like a nightclub.
- 8:16Speaker 5: I imagine it was at one time.
- 8:18Speaker 7: Judging by its broken-down appearance, that time has long since passed.
- 8:22Speaker 9: Well, are we going in?
- 8:23Speaker 5: Oh, might as well. You take my coat, Margo. It's
- 8:26Speaker 5: raining pretty hard.
- 8:26Speaker 6: Oh, thank you, Lamont.
- 8:28Speaker 7: Come on, everybody. You run ahead, Margo.
- 8:30Speaker 10: All right, Lamont.
- 8:30Speaker 2: What an experience.
- 8:32Speaker 3: What an experience.
- 8:33Speaker 10: Where are my pills?
- 8:34Speaker 5: Can't you forget those fool pills, Carson?
- 8:36Speaker 7: No. How about the two Mr.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Smiths?
- 8:38Speaker 7: You getting out, gentlemen?
- 8:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:41Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Come on.
- 8:43Speaker 5: You'll return for us in the morning, driver?
- 8:45Speaker 8: Right.
- 8:45Speaker 7: Fine.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Good night. Good night. Well, what's the matter?
- 8:52Speaker 7: Why are you all standing outside?
- 8:54Speaker 10: Very funny, that question of his.
- 8:56Speaker 6: Lamont, the door is locked.
- 8:57Speaker 10: No one seems to answer.
- 8:59Speaker 7: Oh.
- 9:00Speaker 5: Open up in there.
- 9:01Speaker 10: I'm getting soaked. I'm getting soaked. Why doesn't someone answer?
- 9:04Speaker 7: Well, someone in there... Oh.
- 9:08Speaker 3: What is it?
- 9:09Speaker 10: What do you want?
- 9:09Speaker 5: I want to get in out of the rain.
- 9:11Speaker 8: Why?
- 9:11Speaker 3: Why do you wish to come in here?
- 9:12Speaker 5: Good heavens, man, we're getting drenched.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Well, I'm sorry.
- 9:15Speaker 10: The inn is closed.
- 9:16Speaker 7: Oh, no, you don't close that door.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Come on, folks.
- 9:18Speaker 10: Pay no attention to him. Come on. You can't do this.
- 9:20Speaker 10: You can't come in. Yeah, but we are in.
- 9:22Speaker 7: Somebody close that door. Who are you?
- 9:28Speaker 10: Why did you come here?
- 9:29Speaker 7: Our plane was grounded, sir. We understood that you could
- 9:32Speaker 7: put us up for the night. Oh.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Stupid of me, I....
- 9:39Speaker 8: I remember now.
- 9:40Speaker 10: They called about you.
- 9:42Speaker 5: Oh, then you have rooms for us?
- 9:43Speaker 2: Oh, yes.
- 9:44Speaker 8: Yes, I have.
- 9:46Speaker 7: Oh, good.
- 9:47Speaker 5: This is Miss Lane.
- 9:48Speaker 6: How do you do?
- 9:49Speaker 7: Mr. Waterman.
- 9:50Speaker 5: How do you do?
- 9:50Speaker 4: Mr.
- 9:51Speaker 5: Carson. And two gentlemen named Smith.
- 9:55Speaker 10: Lane, Carson, Waterman, and two.
- 10:00Speaker 7: gentlemen named.
- 10:02Speaker 7: Why, it's... Yes?
- 10:06Speaker 8: Two gentlemen named Smith.
- 10:08Speaker 10: Where are the rooms? Where are the rooms in this place?
- 10:10Speaker 3: They're upstairs.
- 10:11Speaker 10: The rooms are upstairs.
- 10:13Speaker 8: I'll get some wood and start a fire. You must
- 10:15Speaker 8: be uncomfortable from the rain. I.
- 10:17Speaker 7: Hey, I'll be back.
- 10:19Speaker 10: Give you the creeps, wouldn't he? Wouldn't he give you
- 10:21Speaker 10: the creeps?
- 10:22Speaker 6: Look, Lamont, our friends the Smith brothers are going upstairs.
- 10:26Speaker 7: Yes.
- 10:27Speaker 5: They haven't much liking for our company.
- 10:29Speaker 7: I imagine, though, that the detective prefers to put his
- 10:32Speaker 7: prisoner in a room where he can keep a close
- 10:34Speaker 7: watch on him.
- 10:34Speaker 11: I don't know how the rest of you feel, but
- 10:36Speaker 11: I don't like this place. Something about the atmosphere.
- 10:39Speaker 3: And that old man.
- 10:40Speaker 7: I wouldn't worry.
- 10:40Speaker 5: About it, Mr.
- 10:41Speaker 6: Waterman.
- 10:42Speaker 5: After all, we're all in the same... Oh!
- 10:44Speaker 3: Did you hear that?
- 10:44Speaker 7: What was that?
- 10:45Speaker 3: Those were shots.
- 10:46Speaker 10: I may be a nervous wreck, but I know shots
- 10:48Speaker 10: when I hear them.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Yes, and they came from upstairs.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Did he come down here? Did you see him? Who?
- 10:53Speaker 5: Who are you talking about?
- 10:53Speaker 3: My prisoner. Did he escape? Did you see him?
- 10:55Speaker 7: No. He didn't come down the stairs.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Well, he's gotten away. Now, listen, all of you. You've
- 11:00Speaker 3: got to help me.
- 11:00Speaker 7: Well, what happened?
- 11:01Speaker 3: I was taking that man to the state prison. He
- 11:03Speaker 3: was a dangerous criminal.
- 11:04Speaker 7: Yes, but how did he escape?
- 11:06Speaker 3: Just slipped out of the cuffs when I got up
- 11:07Speaker 3: the head of the stairs. I fired at him, but
- 11:09Speaker 3: it was too dark up there to see anything.
- 11:11Speaker 5: Then he must still be up there.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Yes, yes, that's right.
- 11:13Speaker 5: We'd better go look for him.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Will you fellas help me?
- 11:15Speaker 5: Why, certainly I will.
- 11:16Speaker 3: And you, Water. Oh, just a minute.
- 11:17Speaker 5: I don't think you'd better include me in that.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Well, why not, Water? I prefer to remain down here,
- 11:21Speaker 3: that's all.
- 11:21Speaker 10: Well, if he stays, I stay. That's all there is
- 11:23Speaker 10: to it.
- 11:24Speaker 5: Very well, Carson. Do you want to stay here tomorrow?
- 11:26Speaker 6: No, I should say not. I'm coming with you.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Good.
- 11:28Speaker 5: Let's go, then.
- 11:29Speaker 3: I have a flashlight here. I have one, too.
- 11:31Speaker 5: Fine.
- 11:32Speaker 7: Now, why don't you search that corridor, and we'll go
- 11:35Speaker 7: down this way.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Okay. If you see anything, holler.
- 11:38Speaker 9: Right.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Come on, Margo.
- 11:40Speaker 8: All right.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Come on.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Do you think the man is still in the house?
- 11:46Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Why do you suppose that Mr.
- 11:48Speaker 8: Waterman refused to.
- 11:49Speaker 6: Join in the search?
- 11:50Speaker 5: Well, he might be concerned about his jewels.
- 11:53Speaker 6: Did you notice how quickly old Carson volunteered to stay
- 11:55Speaker 6: with him?
- 11:56Speaker 3: Yes.
- 11:56Speaker 7: Yes, I did notice that. But there was something else
- 11:59Speaker 7: that happened downstairs that was more important than either of
- 12:01Speaker 7: those things. What was that, Lamont?
- 12:04Speaker 5: The behavior of the old innkeeper.
- 12:06Speaker 7: Did you notice his startled expression of recognition when he saw.
- 12:09Speaker 5: The detective and the criminal?
- 12:11Speaker 8: Yes, yes, I did notice that.
- 12:12Speaker 5: He knew that criminal. I'm sure of it.
- 12:15Speaker 7: There's a look about that old man in his roadhouse
- 12:18Speaker 7: that has the familiar ring of a criminal background.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Lamont, do you think that this is a gang hangout?
- 12:23Speaker 7: Well, not anymore, no. But it could have been a
- 12:26Speaker 7: few years back, in Prohibition days. You know, Margo, it's
- 12:30Speaker 7: fairly possible that the old man not only knew the criminal,
- 12:34Speaker 7: but he might even have helped him escape.
- 12:36Speaker 8: Oh, Margo, you really think that?
- 12:38Speaker 7: Yes. But there's only one way to prove it. That
- 12:41Speaker 7: old man is going to receive a visit right now
- 12:44Speaker 7: from the shadows.
- 13:05Speaker 9: Out here in the rain, chopping wood. There's really no
- 13:10Speaker 9: need for a fire. It'll all be warm enough tonight. Yes,
- 13:15Speaker 9: with that killer loose.
- 13:21Speaker 7: Huh?
- 13:23Speaker 3: What was that?
- 13:24Speaker 7: I've come to pay a call on you, old man.
- 13:27Speaker 7: Who speaks to me? I am called the Shadow.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Where are you?
- 13:33Speaker 10: I see no one.
- 13:34Speaker 7: That's true. By my hypnotic power, I have made myself
- 13:37Speaker 7: quite invisible to your eyes.
- 13:39Speaker 9: What do you want of me?
- 13:41Speaker 7: I want you to answer some questions.
- 13:43Speaker 10: What about?
- 13:44Speaker 7: Did you know any of the people who came here tonight?
- 13:47Speaker 8: No.
- 13:48Speaker 7: You're lying to me. You knew one of the men
- 13:50Speaker 7: who was introduced to you as Mr.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Smith.
- 13:54Speaker 7: I don't know what you're talking about. He wouldn't have
- 13:56Speaker 7: been an old criminal acquaintance of yours, would he?
- 14:00Speaker 10: What do you mean?
- 14:01Speaker 7: Someone that you might have known in the old days...
- 14:04Speaker 7: when this inn was a criminal hideout.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Who told you that?
- 14:07Speaker 7: It's true, then. This was a gang hideout.
- 14:09Speaker 8: That was a long time ago.
- 14:13Speaker 7: But not so long ago that you wouldn't remember an
- 14:15Speaker 7: old companion. Am I right?
- 14:18Speaker 10: What are you driving at?
- 14:20Speaker 7: That criminal that you recognized... was being taken to the
- 14:23Speaker 7: state prison. A few minutes ago, he escaped from the
- 14:27Speaker 7: detective that was guarding him. He escaped?
- 14:28Speaker 5: Yes.
- 14:29Speaker 7: He's at large in this roadhouse. And I think you
- 14:33Speaker 7: helped him get away.
- 14:34Speaker 3: No, no, you're all wrong.
- 14:35Speaker 7: But you knew him, didn't you?
- 14:36Speaker 10: Hey, yes.
- 14:38Speaker 8: Yes, I knew him all right, but I didn't help him.
- 14:41Speaker 7: How can you prove that?
- 14:42Speaker 8: I'll show you how.
- 14:44Speaker 3: I'll go with you.
- 14:45Speaker 9: I'll go with you to the detective that was guarding
- 14:47Speaker 9: him and tell him all I know about it.
- 14:48Speaker 7: Go fire those shots.
- 14:51Speaker 10: Come back here.
- 14:53Speaker 7: Come back. Old man. Old man.
- 14:57Speaker 4: Why?
- 14:59Speaker 5: He's dead.
- 15:06Speaker 7: I can't stand it anymore.
- 15:08Speaker 3: After all.
- 15:10Speaker 7: What were those shots?
- 15:11Speaker 3: The old man. The old innkeeper was shot and killed.
- 15:13Speaker 10: It was the criminal. The escaped criminal.
- 15:15Speaker 5: He did it.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Did anyone see the killer?
- 15:16Speaker 6: No, we just heard the shots outside. When we got
- 15:18Speaker 6: out there, the.
- 15:19Speaker 7: Murder was gone.
- 15:19Speaker 10: What a night. What a night. Get me some water, somebody.
- 15:23Speaker 10: I need a pill.
- 15:25Speaker 3: What are we going to do? All of us are
- 15:27Speaker 3: in danger.
- 15:27Speaker 7: Well, I'd better phone.
- 15:29Speaker 3: For the police. Your phone is dead.
- 15:31Speaker 5: The wire's been cut.
- 15:32Speaker 6: No one can go out in a storm, either.
- 15:34Speaker 7: Lamont, what can we do? Well, Margo, we'll just have
- 15:37Speaker 7: to stay here till morning, I guess. Wait till the
- 15:39Speaker 7: car comes for us.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Look, gentlemen, there's something I must tell you.
- 15:42Speaker 7: Yes?
- 15:43Speaker 5: What is it, Mr.
- 15:43Speaker 7: Waterman?
- 15:44Speaker 11: In this leather case, I have some very valuable merchandise.
- 15:47Speaker 11: It's something that the killer would be very anxious to
- 15:50Speaker 11: get his hands on.
- 15:51Speaker 3: I must ask all of you to help me protect him.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Don't you worry, Waterman. We'll take care of you. My
- 15:57Speaker 3: only real concern now is to capture that man. I
- 15:59Speaker 3: am responsible for him.
- 16:01Speaker 7: Well, tell me, did you see any trace of him upstairs?
- 16:03Speaker 3: No, not a sign of him.
- 16:05Speaker 7: I see. Well, I have a suggestion to make, and
- 16:08Speaker 7: I think that you all should follow it.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Yes?
- 16:10Speaker 7: What?
- 16:11Speaker 3: What is it?
- 16:12Speaker 7: All of us should go to our room.
- 16:13Speaker 5: That is, all of us except you, Detective.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Hawkins is the name.
- 16:18Speaker 7: Thank you. I think that Detective Hawkins should stand guard
- 16:21Speaker 7: and the rest of us should try to get some sleep.
- 16:23Speaker 10: Ah, get sleep. Get sleep? With a killer running loose?
- 16:27Speaker 10: Are you crazy?
- 16:27Speaker 3: Ah, he's right, Carson. If my escaped prisoner thinks we've
- 16:30Speaker 3: all turned in, he might come out of hiding. But, Mr. Cranston,
- 16:34Speaker 3: would we be safe in our room?
- 16:35Speaker 5: I think so, Mr.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Waterman.
- 16:37Speaker 7: At the first sign of anything suspicious, I suggest that
- 16:40Speaker 7: we call out. Well, I... Come along.
- 16:42Speaker 5: It's the best thing to do.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Really?
- 16:43Speaker 10: We'll do it under protest.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Only under protest.
- 16:45Speaker 5: I understand, Mr.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Carson. Come along.
- 16:47Speaker 10: This night better end soon. I'm running out of pills.
- 17:00Speaker 6: Come on.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Why did you want everyone to go to their rooms?
- 17:03Speaker 5: Isn't it dangerous? Perhaps.
- 17:06Speaker 7: The danger would be just as great downstairs. Besides, Margo,
- 17:10Speaker 7: I wanted to talk to you alone. What about? Were
- 17:12Speaker 7: you downstairs when the old man was shot right outside
- 17:15Speaker 7: the door?
- 17:15Speaker 9: Yes.
- 17:16Speaker 5: Who was missing from the room?
- 17:18Speaker 8: Well, the detective, of course, and.
- 17:22Speaker 6: Oh, yes, Mr. Carson.
- 17:23Speaker 7: Carson, eh?
- 17:25Speaker 5: I wondered about him.
- 17:26Speaker 3: What do you mean?
- 17:27Speaker 7: That old boy is doing his act too well. His
- 17:30Speaker 7: pills and his nervousness are too conspicuous to be genuine.
- 17:33Speaker 6: Why, do you think that he's in league with the
- 17:35Speaker 6: man who escaped?
- 17:36Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 17:36Speaker 7: There's something mighty strange about his behavior.
- 17:40Speaker 6: Lamont, did you learn anything from that old man Baxter
- 17:42Speaker 6: before he was killed?
- 17:43Speaker 7: Not anything that really counted. He knew the criminal all right.
- 17:47Speaker 7: He seemed just on the verge of revealing something important
- 17:49Speaker 7: about him when he was shot. Why do you suppose Mr.
- 17:51Speaker 8: Waterman wanted to tell us about his case of jewels?
- 17:54Speaker 7: I can't figure that either.
- 17:55Speaker 5: Unless he really did want protection. Oh, I must say,
- 17:59Speaker 5: I don't trust him either.
- 18:01Speaker 8: What was that?
- 18:02Speaker 7: I don't know. Come on, Margo. Yeah, it's coming from
- 18:05Speaker 7: this room here.
- 18:06Speaker 6: Oh, Lamont, it's Waterman.
- 18:08Speaker 7: Yes, he's been hit on the head. Margo, help me
- 18:10Speaker 7: lift him up, please.
- 18:11Speaker 10: All right.
- 18:12Speaker 7: There you are, ma'am.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Robbed my jewels.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Did you hear that, Lamont?
- 18:16Speaker 3: Yes. Hey, what's wrong?
- 18:18Speaker 10: What's wrong?
- 18:18Speaker 6: Mr. Waterman, he was attacked.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Good heaven.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Good heaven.
- 18:22Speaker 3: Waterman was hit on the head.
- 18:23Speaker 7: He seems to be coming to. Give him a little air. Now,
- 18:27Speaker 7: just take it easy, old man. That's easy.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Robbed.
- 18:30Speaker 5: Robbed.
- 18:30Speaker 7: I was robbed.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Well, tell us who did it.
- 18:32Speaker 7: Did you see anyone? No.
- 18:34Speaker 8: No, my back was turned.
- 18:35Speaker 3: I was hit.
- 18:37Speaker 10: My case was taken. My case of jewels. This is terrible.
- 18:39Speaker 10: This is terrible.
- 18:40Speaker 7: Wait a minute. Who said that? Why, that was Mr.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Carson.
- 18:44Speaker 7: Carson.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Carson, I have some questions that I'd like you to answer.
- 18:48Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 18:48Speaker 10: What do you mean?
- 18:49Speaker 3: You've got my jewels.
- 18:50Speaker 7: What?
- 18:51Speaker 6: Yes, he has, I tell you.
- 18:52Speaker 3: He's crazy. He's crazy.
- 18:53Speaker 10: He doesn't know what he's saying.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Oh, yes, I do.
- 18:55Speaker 3: I know that you've been following me ever since I
- 18:57Speaker 3: left New York. You can't deny that, can you? Well, now, I.
- 19:02Speaker 10: That blow has affected his head.
- 19:04Speaker 3: You see, he doesn't answer my questions. Why don't you
- 19:06Speaker 3: answer him, Carson?
- 19:08Speaker 10: You keep out of this. None of your business.
- 19:10Speaker 3: No, forgetting that I am a detective, Carson. And it
- 19:13Speaker 3: is my business.
- 19:13Speaker 7: Let me get up.
- 19:14Speaker 5: Just let me get up.
- 19:15Speaker 7: I'll make him admit he stole my jewels.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Let me out of here.
- 19:18Speaker 5: You'd better go to your room. There may be some
- 19:20Speaker 5: trouble here.
- 19:20Speaker 6: All right, but you be careful.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Just let me get up, and I'll give him the
- 19:23Speaker 3: same treatment he gave me.
- 19:24Speaker 10: This is an outrage. An outrage. You don't believe him.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Do you, gentlemen?
- 19:29Speaker 3: Never mind your innocent talk, Carson.
- 19:31Speaker 10: This is no innocent talk. It's the truth. I can
- 19:33Speaker 10: prove that I.
- 19:34Speaker 3: That's Margo.
- 19:35Speaker 7: Something's happened to her.
- 19:36Speaker 10: Margo!
- 19:38Speaker 3: Margo!
- 19:38Speaker 6: I'm right here, Lamont.
- 19:39Speaker 7: Are you all right? Yes. Yes, but look at this.
- 19:43Speaker 10: A body. A dead body.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Yes.
- 19:47Speaker 8: I opened this door.
- 19:48Speaker 9: I thought it was my room.
- 19:49Speaker 6: It was a closet. His body fell out.
- 19:52Speaker 3: What's the matter?
- 19:53Speaker 7: Miss Lane just discovered this body.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Holy smoke.
- 19:58Speaker 7: Is it your missing criminal?
- 19:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it's him.
- 20:02Speaker 5: He's dead.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Carson again. That Carson is behind this whole thing. I
- 20:07Speaker 3: don't get it yet, but I'm going to soon enough.
- 20:09Speaker 3: I am taking that guy downstairs and giving him a
- 20:12Speaker 3: good going over.
- 20:13Speaker 6: Are you going with him, Lamont?
- 20:14Speaker 7: No, not just yet, Margot. I'd like to examine this
- 20:17Speaker 7: body more thoroughly. Why?
- 20:20Speaker 6: What do you expect to find out?
- 20:21Speaker 7: I'll let you know in a minute. Let me see.
- 20:23Speaker 5: Oh, this is interesting. Do you see the marks of
- 20:28Speaker 5: the handcuff on this man's wrist?
- 20:30Speaker 7: Yes. I just want you to remember that these marks
- 20:33Speaker 7: are on his left wrist, Margot.
- 20:35Speaker 6: Well, I don't understand.
- 20:36Speaker 3: You will presently.
- 20:37Speaker 7: Now, let's have a look under the coat. Ah, just
- 20:41Speaker 7: as I suspected. Look here. A very clear imprint of
- 20:45Speaker 7: a shoulder holster under the left armpit.
- 20:47Speaker 6: Well, what does that prove?
- 20:49Speaker 5: Just come with me, Margo, and you'll find out.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Where are we going?
- 20:51Speaker 5: Downstairs.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Oh, I wish I knew what you were talking about.
- 20:54Speaker 7: Just be patient, Margo.
- 20:55Speaker 5: Just be patient.
- 20:56Speaker 3: What did you do with those jewels? I didn't take them,
- 20:58Speaker 3: I tell you. He's lying, Hawkins.
- 21:00Speaker 7: Yeah, I know, I know.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Oh, we've got some news for you, Mr. Ransom. Oh,
- 21:03Speaker 3: what's that? We found this gun on the Carson jet.
- 21:06Speaker 3: So he tells us that he's a private investigator who
- 21:09Speaker 3: was hired by Waterman's company to protect you.
- 21:11Speaker 10: That's the truth. I can show you my credentials. I
- 21:13Speaker 10: can prove it.
- 21:14Speaker 3: You never heard of any investigator who was hired to
- 21:16Speaker 3: protect you, did you, Waterman? No, of course not.
- 21:18Speaker 10: You've got to believe me.
- 21:20Speaker 5: I do believe you, Mr.
- 21:21Speaker 7: Carson.
- 21:21Speaker 5: Huh?
- 21:22Speaker 3: What'd you say?
- 21:23Speaker 7: I said that I believe Mr. Carson's story. Are you crazy?
- 21:26Speaker 5: I don't think so.
- 21:28Speaker 7: I even believe that I know who really stole Mr.
- 21:30Speaker 7: Waterman's jewels.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Who?
- 21:32Speaker 3: Who was it?
- 21:34Speaker 7: You, Mr.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Hawkins?
- 21:35Speaker 9: Me?
- 21:36Speaker 5: But he's a detective, Mr.
- 21:37Speaker 7: Hawkins. I'm not so sure that he is.
- 21:39Speaker 3: What do you mean?
- 21:40Speaker 7: I've just finished examining that body upstairs, Mr.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Hawkins.
- 21:43Speaker 7: The body of your supposed escaped criminal. I learned several
- 21:48Speaker 7: very revealing facts.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Is that so?
- 21:51Speaker 7: What? First of all, I discovered handcuff marks on his
- 21:54Speaker 7: left wrist. That means that he was linked to your
- 21:58Speaker 7: right wrist. Don't you think it unusual that you, a detective,
- 22:01Speaker 7: should have changed your right hand, the hand you hold
- 22:04Speaker 7: that gun in now?
- 22:05Speaker 3: You don't know what you're talking about.
- 22:06Speaker 7: Oh, yes, I do. Another thing I found on that
- 22:09Speaker 7: body was the imprint of a shoulder holster. I've never
- 22:13Speaker 7: known criminals on their way to jail to carry guns.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Well, what are you trying to say? Simply this.
- 22:18Speaker 7: That dead man upstairs was the real detective, Mr. Hawkins,
- 22:21Speaker 7: and you, you are the criminal.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Why, you.
- 22:24Speaker 7: I'll thank you to give me that gun. Okay.
- 22:27Speaker 3: Okay.
- 22:28Speaker 8: Now, stand where you are, all of you. You see
- 22:32Speaker 8: what happened to one guy who got smart.
- 22:35Speaker 7: Too smart.
- 22:36Speaker 4: You can't do this.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Shut up.
- 22:38Speaker 8: I've killed two guys tonight, sister. And the night ain't
- 22:42Speaker 8: over yet.
- 22:43Speaker 11: Why, what do you mean by that?
- 22:45Speaker 8: This place we're in now is an old hangout of mine.
- 22:50Speaker 8: We had a lot of excitement here one night a
- 22:52Speaker 8: few years back. Five guys knocked off. Yeah, right in
- 22:58Speaker 8: this room, too. Lined up right at that bar over there. Oh,
- 23:02Speaker 8: please stop. Yeah, that's why I had to kill that
- 23:05Speaker 8: old man Baxter. He remembered me.
- 23:08Speaker 6: Lamont!
- 23:09Speaker 3: Get away from him, sister.
- 23:10Speaker 6: Oh.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Are you Waterman?
- 23:12Speaker 7: Pull him into that room over there.
- 23:14Speaker 3: No, you don't. I said pull him into that room. Oh,
- 23:17Speaker 3: you're pretty brave with that gun in my.
- 23:19Speaker 7: Ribs, aren't you?
- 23:19Speaker 3: Get going, punk.
- 23:21Speaker 8: I'm gonna use him later on for a little scene
- 23:24Speaker 8: I'm staging.
- 23:25Speaker 10: You're mad, Hawkins.
- 23:27Speaker 7: Maybe you're right.
- 23:29Speaker 3: But you're gonna enjoy this scene. Yeah.
- 23:33Speaker 8: You all play important parts in it. The parts of
- 23:37Speaker 8: the ones who was shot in that old gang killing.
- 23:40Speaker 7: You mean.
- 23:42Speaker 6: You mean you're killing us, too?
- 23:43Speaker 7: Yeah, you get the idea.
- 23:45Speaker 8: But first, we gotta be authentic. It was all done
- 23:48Speaker 8: with music. That nickel in the slot piano was playing.
- 23:54Speaker 8: We'll start that up first. Oh, you're all gonna like this.
- 23:59Speaker 6: Oh, please don't. Yeah.
- 24:04Speaker 8: Same funny old tune. Yeah, I can remember.
- 24:09Speaker 7: It like it was yesterday.
- 24:12Speaker 6: They don't like your humor, Mr.
- 24:13Speaker 7: Hawkins.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Now, ain't that too bad. Now, line up at the bar.
- 24:18Speaker 3: All of you.
- 24:19Speaker 7: No.
- 24:20Speaker 3: No, you can't do this.
- 24:21Speaker 7: No? Get over there.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Larry.
- 24:23Speaker 7: Go on.
- 24:24Speaker 8: Now, just turn your back.
- 24:29Speaker 7: You too, sister. It'll all be over in just one minute.
- 24:35Speaker 10: What happened?
- 24:38Speaker 7: Sorry to spoil your little scene, Mr.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Hawkins.
- 24:40Speaker 5: Who was that?
- 24:41Speaker 7: Who spoke? You might know me, Mr. Hawkins, as the Shadow.
- 24:45Speaker 7: You again.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Well, where are you?
- 24:46Speaker 7: Come out where I can see you. I prefer to
- 24:48Speaker 7: remain invisible. I can deal with you better that way.
- 24:50Speaker 3: You ain't dealing with me. Not till I take care
- 24:52Speaker 3: of them first.
- 24:52Speaker 7: Put down that gun.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Try and make me. Very well, I will. Grab his
- 24:57Speaker 3: gun quickly.
- 24:57Speaker 7: I got it. That's it. I give him to you now, gentlemen.
- 25:00Speaker 7: He's your prisoner.
- 25:01Speaker 10: I've got him. I've got him covered.
- 25:02Speaker 3: See if he has my jewels.
- 25:03Speaker 10: Yeah, wait a minute. Yeah, here they are. Right in
- 25:06Speaker 10: his coat pocket. Good work, Shadow.
- 25:10Speaker 3: You hear me, Shadow?
- 25:11Speaker 8: Shadow's gone.
- 25:12Speaker 7: Oh, where?
- 25:13Speaker 6: Oh, Lamont.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Where am I?
- 25:15Speaker 7: Oh, Lamont, let me help you.
- 25:17Speaker 3: We got him.
- 25:18Speaker 10: We got him, Cransy.
- 25:18Speaker 7: Oh, good work.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Oh, dear, oh, dear.
- 25:21Speaker 8: This is awful.
- 25:22Speaker 7: What's the matter?
- 25:24Speaker 10: Something terrible has happened.
- 25:25Speaker 7: What is it, Carson?
- 25:27Speaker 10: I've run out of pills.
- 25:35Speaker 2: The weed of crime bears bitter fruit. Crime does not pay.
