- 0:00Aloha. Thursday morning. I'm Mele with what's happening in Hawaiʻi today.
- 1:33Today is pleasant — light to moderate trade winds, isolated showers only on windward and inland slopes. If you're heading out, now's the time. Friday the winds pick up noticeably, and this weekend a band of tropical moisture moves in from east to west. Big Island and Maui windward areas will see heavier showers — watch the Hāna Highway and windward streams for potential flooding. Oʻahu and Kauaʻi will stay drier.
- 1:54Surf is small across the board today — Oʻahu south and north shores both 3 feet, Kauaʻi at 3.7, and the Big Island glassy at 1.1. Comfortable for swimmers and snorkelers. South and west-facing breaks will build swell this weekend and into next week, though — if you're watching those spots, plan accordingly.
- 2:10At Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, Sulfur Banks Trail, Kīpukapuaulu Trail, and the lava tube bridge area remain closed for hazard mitigation and tree removal. Kīlauea stays at Advisory status. The rest of the park is open.
- 2:22Our new piece on fall ocean safety breaks down where it's actually safe to swim come October and November. The swell pattern flips in the shoulder season — north-facing coasts start firing winter swells, which means south and west shores become the smart choice. If you're planning a return trip in the fall or just curious why beach advice shifts month to month, it's a solid guide by island.
- 2:41Wednesday the system moves out and conditions settle. Thursday winds ease, and by next Friday we're back to typical trade wind weather with scattered showers mainly on windward slopes at night and early morning.
- 2:52Get outside today while it's calm. Talk to you tomorrow.
