- 0:00Speaker 1: Joining me on the line right now is the Independent
- 0:03Speaker 1: Member for Goiter Kesier Puric. Good morning, Kezier.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Hey, good morning Katie Kesier. Yeah, that was an interesting text,
- 0:10Speaker 2: that one, and that's I agree with that person sent
- 0:12Speaker 2: that in. It seems like it's been pushed towards the
- 0:16Speaker 2: industry and the business person yet again to sort out
- 0:19Speaker 2: the problems that through this government's lack of policy and
- 0:24Speaker 2: inactivity is creating the issues that we've got currently.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Kezia, what did you make of the announcement the Chief
- 0:31Speaker 1: Minister made and the interview that we just did with
- 0:33Speaker 1: her in terms of these changes.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I didn't hear your interview, but I did see her
- 0:38Speaker 2: do the live feed of the news conference with the
- 0:42Speaker 2: Deputy Commissioner Murphy and also Alex Bruce from the Hotel.
- 0:45Speaker 2: People review the bailaws, do it immediately. This is not
- 0:50Speaker 2: rocket science. We know what needs to be done. We've
- 0:52Speaker 2: got this week and next week of sittings. They could
- 0:55Speaker 2: get a bill done on urgency. You know, the Pariaty
- 0:57Speaker 2: Council could work around the clock as they sometimes do.
- 1:00Speaker 2: It's about a person on the streets having a weapon
- 1:05Speaker 2: of some kind. There's already weapons laws, there's already you know,
- 1:08Speaker 2: laws that deal with that kind of activity, they just
- 1:10Speaker 2: need to be strengthened. So how long is this review
- 1:14Speaker 2: going to take? They didn't say.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Well, I asked her that. She said it's happening immediately
- 1:17Speaker 1: and that the changes would come into play straight away.
- 1:20Speaker 1: But I don't know if anyone quite believes some keasier.
- 1:23Speaker 2: How can they come in straight away change a piece
- 1:25Speaker 2: of legislation? Yes, yes, how that person got bail in
- 1:29Speaker 2: the first place, the perpetrator, that's a question, and maybe
- 1:33Speaker 2: that can be looked at on the court documents. I
- 1:35Speaker 2: don't know, but I just find it interesting, she says,
- 1:38Speaker 2: straight away. But give us what straight away is next week, month,
- 1:42Speaker 2: two months? Like there are others out there probably just
- 1:46Speaker 2: watching what's happening and thinking, well, you know, yeah, he's
- 1:48Speaker 2: been held in cont of this fellow on remand whatever.
- 1:52Speaker 2: But you know, it's not sending a strong message the
- 1:54Speaker 2: would be perpetrated.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Kees. Here is a big question I've got this morning.
- 1:57Speaker 1: We know this overnight, some of it out in your
- 2:00Speaker 1: electorate four. You have gone on an overnight crime spread
- 2:02Speaker 1: across the Greater Dawin region. Right. Police say that the
- 2:05Speaker 1: youths used to stolen vehicle to ram rate into the
- 2:08Speaker 1: Puma at Fanny Bay, also allegedly breaking into the Humpty
- 2:12Speaker 1: Doo golf club, Berry Springs Tavern and the BP at Weinelli.
- 2:15Speaker 1: What are these changes going to do to stop something
- 2:18Speaker 1: like that happening.
- 2:19Speaker 2: They're not They're not going to do anything. This is
- 2:21Speaker 2: after the fact. You know the crimes are being committed.
- 2:24Speaker 2: You know there needs to be a sweet a suite
- 2:27Speaker 2: of changes and they need to be done now. Whether
- 2:29Speaker 2: it's the bail laws, we need to look at that now,
- 2:31Speaker 2: they need to implement something now, they need to look
- 2:33Speaker 2: at the resourting now, Katie. An interesting thing on that
- 2:36Speaker 2: interview with Deputy Commissioner Michael Murphy. He said, very specifically,
- 2:41Speaker 2: we have plenty of police right now to deal with this.
- 2:44Speaker 2: So how come we've got plenty of police right now,
- 2:48Speaker 2: But Deputy Commissioner small Pay says is coronial we need
- 2:51Speaker 2: three hundred more extra police.
- 2:53Speaker 1: So a bloody good question. It's one that you've been asking, true,
- 2:56Speaker 1: that's right, it's one that you've been asking and it's
- 2:58Speaker 1: also one that the oppositeition leader has tried a few
- 3:01Speaker 1: times to have a review into Kesier. Is this something
- 3:05Speaker 1: that we either need a review or there needs to
- 3:07Speaker 1: be further discussion on.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yes, it does. I mean, okay, so they're equipping they're
- 3:13Speaker 2: equipping the transit officers on buses with capsican straight fine,
- 3:17Speaker 2: possibly bouncers fine, you know, crowd controlers. That's fine. But
- 3:21Speaker 2: then they talk about perhaps you know, barriers at the
- 3:23Speaker 2: bottle shops. That's the expense for the business owner. Again,
- 3:26Speaker 2: so you know, everything gets pushed back to industry. Yes,
- 3:29Speaker 2: they're doing it in collaboration. Of course they are, because
- 3:32Speaker 2: they're their members and that's what they do. But the
- 3:35Speaker 2: government has to act this week and next week before
- 3:38Speaker 2: another person loses their life or another family gets you know,
- 3:41Speaker 2: torn apart. Yes, yes, I have no issue reviewing the
- 3:45Speaker 2: bail laws, but you know what needs to be changed,
- 3:47Speaker 2: Chief Minutes, So so just get your team onto it.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Asa t Well and Keser, I think that you know,
- 3:52Speaker 1: you and I a lot of the community are really
- 3:55Speaker 1: very I've gone from feeling very sad to quite angry.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I've got to tell you it was over the last
- 4:01Speaker 1: few weeks and months I've asked the Chief Minister I
- 4:04Speaker 1: don't know how many times whether they need to review
- 4:06Speaker 1: the bail laws or whether they need to change some
- 4:09Speaker 1: of their policy settings, and she had said that they
- 4:12Speaker 1: felt as though they had the policy settings correct.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Well, clearly they didn't, and even yesterday imparliment here, so
- 4:18Speaker 2: the Chief Minister and others were saying, no, no, we've
- 4:20Speaker 2: got the right services, everything's okay, all these lovely wrap
- 4:23Speaker 2: around services and multi laid and multifaceted, bloody complete and
- 4:26Speaker 2: complexity issues. You know, clearly they didn't. So was the
- 4:30Speaker 2: Chief Minister not telling the truth and the lead of
- 4:33Speaker 2: government business where they're not telling the truth in Parliament
- 4:35Speaker 2: yesterday when they said pretty much we've got the right
- 4:37Speaker 2: policy settings. Sched you're saying, and then suddenly today I
- 4:39Speaker 2: know we've got a review legislation. We've got to put
- 4:41Speaker 2: all these changes in to make workplaces safer. Have no
- 4:45Speaker 2: issue with the government doing an audit, you know, work
- 4:48Speaker 2: Safe looking at things because apart from the alleged murder,
- 4:52Speaker 2: there's also a workplace incident. So how quickly is WORKFAFE
- 4:55Speaker 2: going to move on this as well into the investigation
- 4:57Speaker 2: as to what happened keys.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Yeah, look, I think they're all incredibly good questions and
- 5:03Speaker 1: things that need to be answered, which was why I
- 5:05Speaker 1: was so annoyed and upset watching question Time yesterday because
- 5:09Speaker 1: there was actually some very valid questions being asked by
- 5:13Speaker 1: the Independence and the opposition. And I've got to tell you,
- 5:16Speaker 1: I thought the behavior of the government was embarrassing.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Well, the lead of Governmentsiness business Chance he paid when
- 5:23Speaker 2: he responded to the photo no confidence motion by the
- 5:26Speaker 2: opposition basically just put on a show pony performance and
- 5:31Speaker 2: didn't really address the core issue or the core problem
- 5:35Speaker 2: of what we're experiencing them, you know, and just just
- 5:37Speaker 2: did the political grandstanding. Oh, you know, you've lost, you've
- 5:41Speaker 2: lost members, lost by elections, lost, you know, your president,
- 5:44Speaker 2: all that sort of stuff. I'll get over it. That's facts.
- 5:46Speaker 2: People come and go. You know, sometimes you win, sometimes
- 5:49Speaker 2: you're losing this game. That's not what the community out there,
- 5:51Speaker 2: like you, Katie and your listeners want to hear. They
- 5:53Speaker 2: want to hear Due's issues like, yes, they can have
- 5:57Speaker 2: confidence in it. Yes, the community can have confidence that
- 6:00Speaker 2: our laws are robust. Yes, they can have confidence that
- 6:02Speaker 2: we will do all we can to make sure police
- 6:04Speaker 2: requip with the necessary resources to deal with the issues
- 6:06Speaker 2: in our community. That's what the community wanted. Here, Leah
- 6:10Speaker 2: is saying, if Nacara saying we don't have confidence and
- 6:13Speaker 2: we want the government to the Parliament to say there's
- 6:15Speaker 2: no confidence. The government should have been saying why the
- 6:17Speaker 2: public should have confidence. So you're right, it was truated disrespectfully,
- 6:22Speaker 2: and from what I've seen so far this morning, that
- 6:24Speaker 2: anger hasn't gone away or subsided. It's just I would
- 6:27Speaker 2: even say it's even growing because they're not believing the
- 6:30Speaker 2: government one little bit and they have no confidence and
- 6:34Speaker 2: that's what it's all about. They have no confidence. Sadly
- 6:37Speaker 2: for the government, the Chief Minister and all her ministers.
- 6:40Speaker 2: They have no confidence that what you say will actually
- 6:43Speaker 2: happen and we will feel safe again in our homes
- 6:45Speaker 2: in our community.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Tsing, do you feel as though the government's lost control
- 6:48Speaker 1: of the situation with anti social behavior and crime.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I'd have to say yes. And if I had to
- 6:56Speaker 2: score them on crisis management, I'd probably have to give
- 6:58Speaker 2: them a zero. This is the most serious crisis that
- 7:03Speaker 2: you could have inflicted upon your community. The loss of
- 7:06Speaker 2: a young person's life at the hands of another is
- 7:09Speaker 2: at the top of the list in humanity, and their
- 7:13Speaker 2: crisis management of the whole situation is just a little
- 7:16Speaker 2: bit too late and Jez.
- 7:18Speaker 1: To be honest, I think that was what upset me
- 7:20Speaker 1: the most watching Parliament yesterday and watching question time is
- 7:24Speaker 1: I thought, after speaking to Declan's dad earlier in the week,
- 7:28Speaker 1: people need to have a little bit more respect of
- 7:30Speaker 1: the way that the community is feeling.
- 7:33Speaker 2: That's right, that's right, I agree, and I know it's Look,
- 7:37Speaker 2: it's just it's just broken the community. You know, the
- 7:41Speaker 2: community's already a bit broken around the edges. The amount
- 7:44Speaker 2: of destruction and gratuitous violence and up people and old
- 7:47Speaker 2: people being pushed out of their wheelchairs and all that
- 7:50Speaker 2: sort of stuff. I mean, that's just pretty pretty terrible.
- 7:52Speaker 2: But this has just broken the community and that's what
- 7:56Speaker 2: the government needs to address and they right now they
- 7:58Speaker 2: haven't even really that we've got a problem. But that's
- 8:03Speaker 2: I don't believe they have anyway.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Kees Epiric, we always.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Can't mend and you can't heal until you have really
- 8:10Speaker 2: acknowledged the damage that has been done.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Kezier, I always appreciate your time, Thank you very much,
- 8:17Speaker 1: and keep us up to date with what's going on
- 8:19Speaker 1: in parliament. Thank you.
- 8:21Speaker 2: We'll do patter.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Thanks
