- 0:00Welcome along to the Deep Dive. We're the place that takes
- 0:03sometimes, well, pretty dense theological material and tries
- 0:05to unpack it for you. This is Reformed thinking, and
- 0:08today we're attacking maybe one of the biggest, most
- 0:11foundational topics you can imagine.
- 0:13We're tracing God's eternal decision, his will, right from
- 0:17that hidden decree all the way into the believers heart, into
- 0:20that feeling of certainty. We're looking at the chain
- 0:23election, then God's call, both kinds, and then the assurance of
- 0:26adoption that comes from it. We've got quite a stack of
- 0:28sources here really digging into the sequence, the mechanics of
- 0:30how God works this out, you know, the cause, how it shows
- 0:34up, and the certainty that results.
- 0:36Our mission really is to get a solid handle on these mechanics
- 0:39and crucially, to see the difference between, well, a
- 0:42right way to seek assurance versus a kind of dangerous
- 0:45speculative path that can actually trip people up.
- 0:48It all kind of boils down to this massive question, doesn't
- 0:51it? How can you really know for sure
- 0:53that you're one of the elect? And what part does the Holy
- 0:55Spirit play in giving you that rock solid assurance?
- 0:58That really is the question, isn't it?
- 0:59Because, you know, everything hinges on election or
- 1:02predestination. That's the starting point for
- 1:04this whole chain. But straight away the sources
- 1:08make it clear this starting point is hidden.
- 1:11It's veiled. We can't just look at it
- 1:13directly. Election, as it's defined here,
- 1:16is God's eternal secret plan. It's the cause behind everything
- 1:20else. And because it's the cause, it
- 1:22comes first and it determines what follows the call.
- 1:24The spirits work, the faith that results.
- 1:26We absolutely have to stress this election is purely about
- 1:29God's grace and mercy. It's not about us.
- 1:31OK, so the order is critical. God chooses first, then he works
- 1:34faith in someone. The sources seem really careful
- 1:36to separate cause and effect here to avoid any idea that we
- 1:39somehow earn this. Exactly, they draw a very sharp
- 1:42line. Faith is the result of election.
- 1:44It's the work produced by election.
- 1:46It's definitely not the cause of election.
- 1:48See election doesn't look down the quarters of time.
- 1:50See our faith and then choose us.
- 1:51No, the eternal decree itself is what generates faith in the
- 1:54elect. If you flip that around, say God
- 1:57chose us because he knew we'd believe, well, then salvation
- 2:00suddenly depends partly on us, on our response.
- 2:04And that undermines the whole idea that election rests solely
- 2:06on God's free choice, his favor. The doctor protects itself, you
- 2:10could say, by insisting election doesn't need our faith to be
- 2:12valid. Faith just flows from it.
- 2:15So if that plan is well kept secret, what happens if we try
- 2:19to peek behind the curtain anyway?
- 2:20It's tempting, isn't it, to try and figure out, am I on the
- 2:23list? Oh.
- 2:24Absolutely. And the sources described that
- 2:25attempt in frankly quite alarming terms, trying to
- 2:29penetrate that secret decree directly just by using our own
- 2:33minds or looking inward. It's compared to staring into a
- 2:36deep. Abyss.
- 2:37A deep abyss, yes. Or a bottomless Whirlpool that
- 2:40can just swallow us up. It's a warning against trying to
- 2:43grasp something that's fundamentally beyond our direct
- 2:45reach. That's strong language, yeah.
- 2:47It suggests there's a real spiritual danger.
- 2:49There a profound 1. The sources actually identify
- 2:52this impulse as one of Satan's main tactics.
- 2:55A most grievous or dangerous temptation, they call it.
- 2:58He stirs this wicked desire to seek election outside the way,
- 3:04meaning outside of God's revealed method.
- 3:06It's not genuine seeking. It's presented as a kind of
- 3:09theological pride. To know what only God knows.
- 3:11Precisely. We're warned against this rash
- 3:14searching. It's called a deadly rock
- 3:16against which no one is ever dashed without destruction,
- 3:19because it pulls us away from God's Word, away from Christ,
- 3:21into speculation about God's in mind.
- 3:24We're told to restrain this desire, not because we should be
- 3:26ignorant, but out of what the sources call a soberness of
- 3:29faith, trusting what God has revealed.
- 3:31OK, so the cause is hidden. It's all about God's grace.
- 3:36But election isn't just some abstract idea floating out
- 3:39there. It has a purpose, right?
- 3:41A big purpose focused on God's glory involving both the saves
- 3:45and the lost. Yes, the purpose is definitely
- 3:48multifaceted. First, you have the purpose
- 3:49concerning the elect themselves. The plan is designed that we,
- 3:53adopted as sons by our Heavenly Father, may obtain salvation and
- 3:56immortality by His favor. So the elect are chosen
- 4:00beforehand to be made like Christ, prepared as vessels of
- 4:03mercy. The end goal for the elect is
- 4:05always certain salvation and eternal life.
- 4:08And then there's the second aspect, which often feels more
- 4:10challenging to grasp, how election displays God's glory,
- 4:14not just his mercy, but also his, well, his severity or
- 4:17justice. Absolutely, and this is crucial
- 4:19for a full picture. The aim is to make it crystal
- 4:21clear that salvation comes entirely from God's mercy.
- 4:24When you trace it back to its origin election.
- 4:26You see, as the sources put it, mercy alone appears on every
- 4:29side. God's decree guarantees that His
- 4:32free goodness gets all the credit because there was nothing
- 4:35in the elect person themselves that made them deserve being
- 4:37chosen. OK, that highlights the mercy
- 4:39side, but then the flip side is God's glory being shown even in
- 4:43the condemnation of the non elect, the reprobate.
- 4:47The sources don't shy away from this aspect of God's justice.
- 4:50No, they don't. They're very direct.
- 4:52God's glory is shown forth in the condemnation of the
- 4:55reprobate. Those whom God in His sovereign
- 4:58plan designated for dishonor, become instruments of His wrath
- 5:02and examples of His severity. This happens through a judgement
- 5:05that is described as perfectly just, even if the reasons behind
- 5:09the initial decree are inscrutable beyond our full
- 5:12understanding. So it's not arbitrary.
- 5:13Not arbitrary cruelty, no. It's presented as part of God's
- 5:17sovereign design to display the fullness of His character, His
- 5:20righteous judgement alongside His free goodness.
- 5:23You really have to hold both aspects together to grasp the
- 5:25scope of the decree as presented here.
- 5:28Right, OK, let's follow that chain then.
- 5:29If election is the hidden cause, the next link is the call.
- 5:33This seems to be where God's hidden plan starts to become
- 5:36well, visible or experienced. The call is the attestation,
- 5:40right? The way God brings the elect
- 5:42into actually possessing what was planned for them.
- 5:44Exactly. The call functions as the
- 5:46testimony, the outward sign or evidence of God's eternal
- 5:50choice, and the sources are very careful to distinguish between
- 5:53two kinds of calling. We must keep these separate, the
- 5:57general call and the special call.
- 5:59OK, let's start with the general call, the universal one.
- 6:02Right. This is described as the call by
- 6:04which God invites all equally to Himself through the outward
- 6:08preaching of the Word. It's indiscriminate.
- 6:10Think of a preacher proclaiming the gospel in a public square.
- 6:13The message goes out to everyone there, all equally.
- 6:16It's shared, as the sources say, also with the wicked.
- 6:19Everyone hears the same external message.
- 6:22And even though that offer itself is an expression of God's
- 6:25grace, the outward preaching alone can't be full proof of
- 6:28election. Why is that distinction so
- 6:31vital? Well, think about it.
- 6:32If simply hearing the general call proved you were elect, then
- 6:36everyone whoever heard a sermon would be saved and old.
- 6:39That's clearly not the case, is it?
- 6:40The offer is genuinely made, which shows God's goodness, but
- 6:44the outward word by itself doesn't have the power to create
- 6:47saving faith in someone who hasn't been chosen for that
- 6:50special work of the Spirit. Which leads to that really stark
- 6:53idea. For those who reject it, the
- 6:55general actually makes their situation worse.
- 6:58It increases their judgement. It does.
- 7:01For those who hear God's offer of love in Christ and turn away
- 7:04from it, that same general call changes its nature.
- 7:06For them, it becomes, in the words of the sources, a saver of
- 7:09death. It serves as an occasion for
- 7:12severe condemnation. Why?
- 7:15Because it removes any excuse. They can't plead ignorance.
- 7:18God spoke. He offered salvation and they
- 7:20willfully rejected it. The outward call makes them
- 7:23fully accountable for their unbelief.
- 7:25OK, so the general call is broad, makes people accountable,
- 7:28but doesn't inherently save. That must mean the special call
- 7:31is where the saving power lies. How do the sources describe this
- 7:34special effectual call? This is the call that God deems,
- 7:38for the most part, to give to the believers alone.
- 7:40It's distinct because it is the saving work and the key
- 7:43difference, the mechanism, is the inward illumination of His
- 7:46Spirit. That's the crucial element.
- 7:48When the Holy Spirit works internally, He makes the
- 7:50preached Word truly dwell in the hearts of the elect.
- 7:53It doesn't just hit the eardrum, it penetrates the heart.
- 7:56And that inward illumination is what overcomes our natural
- 7:59resistance, right? That heart of stone idea from
- 8:03Reformed theology. Our inability to come to God on
- 8:06our own. Precisely the Spirit's light is
- 8:08designed specifically to bypass and overcome that inherent
- 8:11resistance, that spiritual deadness.
- 8:13The sources bring in a Dustin here.
- 8:15Quite helpfully, Augustine's insight is everyone who has
- 8:18truly heard and learned from the Father does come to Christ.
- 8:21The learning isn't just intellectual, it's an internal,
- 8:24effective teaching by God. The Father heard within, is the
- 8:28one who does the decisive work. He removes the heart of stone
- 8:31and gives a heart of flesh. That's why this inner call is
- 8:34described as a pledge of salvation that cannot deceive
- 8:36us. It's God's own irresistible work
- 8:38taking place. So experiencing this inner call
- 8:42is the beginning of actually enjoying your election,
- 8:44realizing you're sharing it. But you mentioned something
- 8:47earlier about temporary illumination.
- 8:48That sounds like a potential source of great anxiety for
- 8:51people. We need to be clear about that.
- 8:52Yes, this needs careful handling.
- 8:55The sources do acknowledge that some people experience a kind of
- 8:58illumination from God that is only for a time.
- 9:01These individuals might show outward signs, maybe some
- 9:04initial excitement, some moral improvement.
- 9:06They might even seem part of the church for a while.
- 9:08But eventually they fall away. So what's the actual difference,
- 9:12according to the sources, between that temporary
- 9:15experience and the real saving special call?
- 9:19Is it just a matter of degree? It's presented as more than just
- 9:22degree. It's about the nature and depth
- 9:24of the connection to Christ. They fall away, the sources say,
- 9:27because they never cleave to Christ with the hereafter trust.
- 9:31That phrase, Hereafter trust suggests a deep, settled,
- 9:34lasting confidence in Christ Himself, a reliance that
- 9:37endures. This comes only from the sealing
- 9:39work of the spirit of adoption. Temporary illumination might
- 9:42stir the emotions, maybe even convince the intellect for a
- 9:45while, but it doesn't fundamentally change the will or
- 9:48root the soul in Christ. With that permanent persevering
- 9:51trust, the truly elect receive an inner work that ensures they
- 9:55do persevere to the end. OK, that's a critical
- 9:57distinction, so let's follow this.
- 9:59The special call is effective. It produces belief.
- 10:03But then how does a person know this has happened to them?
- 10:07How does that invisible reality of being elect turn into a solid
- 10:11felt assurance right now? Right, the assurance question.
- 10:14This is where the Holy Spirit's specific role comes into sharp
- 10:17focus. He is given and received at the
- 10:20moment of that effectual call. And he, he's given a particular
- 10:23title here, the Spirit of adoption.
- 10:25That name itself tells you his job.
- 10:27He formerly brings the elect person into God's family,
- 10:30uniting them to the Father through Christ.
- 10:33We might have been chosen from eternity, but we only enter into
- 10:35the experience of that adoption when the Spirit comes to dwell
- 10:39in us through the call. It's interesting that the source
- 10:41material uses language that sounds almost, well, legal or
- 10:44commercial, to describe what the Spirit does.
- 10:46That really emphasizes the certainty.
- 10:48That language is deliberate and very significant.
- 10:51The spirit is called the seal and the guarantee of the
- 10:54inheritance to come. Think about a seal on an
- 10:57official document. It authenticates it.
- 11:00Cruise ownership makes it legally binding.
- 11:03The Spirit does something similar in the believer's heart.
- 11:05He acts to surely establish and seal by his testimony the
- 11:09assurance of the adoption to come.
- 11:11So it's like the Spirit is an internal witness, confirming
- 11:14personally to us the truth of what the Gospel proclaimed
- 11:16outwardly. Exactly that The assurance isn't
- 11:18just wishful thinking. It has an objective basis in the
- 11:22Spirit's own testimony within us.
- 11:24This enables believers, as the sources say, to recognize that
- 11:28we are His children from the Spirit which He has given us.
- 11:31This is how the hidden objective fact of election becomes a
- 11:34present, subjective but nonetheless reliable experience
- 11:37for the believer. Which brings us back to faith.
- 11:40We establish election is the cause.
- 11:42The call produces faith. So faith is essential for
- 11:45assurance, right? That's the sign we can actually
- 11:47see your experience. Absolutely.
- 11:49Faith is the necessary starting point for the individual
- 11:51experiencing assurance. It's the visible, God-given sign
- 11:55that the call has been effectual.
- 11:57But we have to keep repeating Faith confirms election.
- 12:00It doesn't 'cause it. Faith is the evidence that the
- 12:03special call has successfully done its work.
- 12:05It's the instrument the Spirit uses to unite the believer to
- 12:07Christ. But the very presence of that
- 12:09phase is the result of the Spirit's prior illuminating
- 12:12work. Our sources confirm this order.
- 12:14The Spirit's illumination comes first.
- 12:16Then belief follows, showing that those who had been ordained
- 12:18to eternal life believed so. The faith you possess is
- 12:22presented as sure evidence, a reliable attestation of God's
- 12:26eternal plan already being at working you.
- 12:28It's the first tangible thing you look to.
- 12:29OK, we've laid out the whole sequence now election, the
- 12:33hidden cause leading to the special call, the Spirit's
- 12:36illumination which produces faith, uniting us to Christ.
- 12:40And this is all sealed by the Spirit of adoption, the
- 12:43guarantee. Now we're at a really practical
- 12:45point. How do we actually maintain this
- 12:48assurance day-to-day, especially given that earlier warning about
- 12:51the deep abyss and the deadly rock of trying to figure it out
- 12:53the wrong way? How do we seek assurance
- 12:56properly? This is where the rubber meets
- 12:57the road, theologically speaking, and it's where
- 13:00spiritual conflict often centers.
- 13:03Remember that most grievous or dangerous temptation from Satan.
- 13:06It's precisely this tempting you to ignore the objective signs
- 13:09God has given the preached word the effectual call producing
- 13:12faith, and instead trying to Pierce The Veil yourself, trying
- 13:15to confirm your election by looking directly at the secret
- 13:17decree. What makes that search so wrong?
- 13:20Is it just about being prideful? It's deeper than just pride,
- 13:23though. That's part of it.
- 13:24It's trying to draw certainty from a source God has
- 13:27deliberately kept hidden from direct view.
- 13:30Improper seeking means trying to penetrate the inner recesses of
- 13:36divine wisdom. It means seeking God's eternal
- 13:39plan apart from His Word, or having this perverse yearning to
- 13:43flit about above the clouds, trying to attain a God's eye
- 13:46view through your own effort. Which is impossible.
- 13:48Exactly, the sources warned. This leads to dreadful ruin.
- 13:52Why? Because trying to find assurance
- 13:54by speculating about the hidden decree detached from the person
- 13:58and work of Christ revealed in the gospel is like throwing
- 14:00yourself into that bottomless Whirlpool of anxiety and doubt.
- 14:04You'll never find solid ground there.
- 14:05So we're told to restrain that impulse with the soberness of
- 14:08faith. If we can't look directly at the
- 14:10hidden cause, where do we look? What's the safe harbor for
- 14:13finding assurance? We look at Christ.
- 14:15This is the pastoral heart of the doctrine.
- 14:17I think the sources explicitly call Christ the mirror wherein
- 14:21we must, and without self deception, may contemplate our
- 14:23own election. Assurance isn't found by gazing
- 14:27endlessly at our own fluctuating feelings, nor by trying to
- 14:30psychoanalyze God the Father apart from his saving work.
- 14:33It's found by looking at Jesus. Why is Christ the mirror?
- 14:37What exactly do we see when we look to Him for assurance about
- 14:41election? We see that the elect were
- 14:44chosen in him, as the sources state, not in themselves, but in
- 14:47his Christ. Therefore assurance is found and
- 14:50secured if we are in communion with Christ.
- 14:52And how do we know we're in communion with Him?
- 14:53Through the gospel, when Christ testifies through the preaching
- 14:57of the gospel, that He has been given to us by the Father to be
- 14:59ours, with all His benefits. So it grounds our subjective
- 15:02feeling of assurance in the objective truth of the gospel
- 15:05promise about Christ. It shifts the focus from was I
- 15:08chosen to am I trusting in the one in whom God chose his
- 15:13people? Precisely.
- 15:15And Christ himself gives the certainty that this election in
- 15:18Him is irrevocable and lasting. He's the one who promises that
- 15:22everyone the Father gives him shall never perish.
- 15:25So if you find yourself genuinely clinging to Christ,
- 15:28and the evidence for that is the faith produced by the effectual
- 15:30call, then you are secure. The certainty of election is
- 15:34tied directly to the reality of your calling, and that calling
- 15:37is made secure because Christ himself keeps those entrusted to
- 15:40Him. So the practical way to seek and
- 15:42maintain assurance isn't some kind of intense introspection or
- 15:45trying to decipher secret signs. It's about clinging to what the
- 15:49sources call the latter signs. Yes, exactly.
- 15:52Focus on the evidence of God's work now, The reality of the
- 15:55call as you experienced it through the Word and Spirit, the
- 15:57ongoing presence of faith even if it feels weak sometimes, and
- 16:01even the daily benefits or tokens of God's grace in your
- 16:04life. Daily benefits like answered
- 16:06prayer or strength to endure trials.
- 16:08Things like that, yes. They're presented as tokens that
- 16:12flow from that secret adoption. You look at the fruit of the
- 16:15Spirit in your life, Lovejoy, peace, patience, and so on.
- 16:20You look at the desire to obey God even when you fail.
- 16:23You look at the reality of repentance when you do fail.
- 16:26These things aren't natural. They're evidence that the
- 16:27special call is real and active in you.
- 16:30The sources essentially say be content with the promises in the
- 16:34Word and the security you have in Christ.
- 16:36Avoid that kind of absurd prayer.
- 16:38Oh Lord, if I'm elect, please answer this prayer.
- 16:41The question of your standing is settled in Christ, who is
- 16:44revealed in the gospel. OK, now we really do need to
- 16:47turn to the other side of this doctrine, the part that's often
- 16:50found most difficult. The fate of the non elect
- 16:53talking about election inevitably raises questions
- 16:55about condemnation. Yes it does, and the sources
- 16:58we're looking at confront this directly, without suffering the
- 17:01language much. They state that the reprobate
- 17:03are hateful to God, and with very good reason.
- 17:06Right, that phrase, hateful to God can sound quite harsh to
- 17:09modern ears. We need to understand the
- 17:11theological reasoning behind it as presented in the sources.
- 17:14The reasoning is tied directly to their state by nature apart
- 17:18from grace, a core concept in this theological framework.
- 17:21Being deprived of His Spirit, the non elect, according to the
- 17:24sources, can bring forth nothing but reason for cursing.
- 17:28They reflect the common corruption of the mass of Adam's
- 17:30offspring. Because they inherit Adam's
- 17:32fallen nature and aren't given the regenerating grace of the
- 17:35Spirit, everything they are and do is tainted by sin.
- 17:38There's nothing inherently pleasing to God in them.
- 17:40God's hatred in this context is presented as His righteous
- 17:44reaction against their inevitable sinfulness and
- 17:46rebellion, a sinfulness He sovereignly chooses not to
- 17:49remedy in their case. And the carrying out of God's
- 17:52plan for the reprobate involves specific actions, sometimes even
- 17:56using the means of grace in a paradoxical way.
- 17:58Yes, the sources describe God executing his decree for the
- 18:01reprobate. Sometimes, by actively blinding
- 18:03them, he might deprive them of the opportunity to hear the Word
- 18:07clearly. Or, in a really stark way, the
- 18:09preaching itself can serve to blind and stunning them further.
- 18:13Let's put this way. God makes way for his
- 18:15predestined plan. When he leaves in blindness
- 18:18those whom he has already condemned and chosen not to give
- 18:20his light, they are counted among the vessels of wrath for
- 18:24dishonor. They are raising up, the sources
- 18:26say, by God's just but inscrutable judgement,
- 18:30ultimately to display His glory through their just condemnation.
- 18:34It's seen as both sovereignly planned and justly deserved
- 18:37because of their sin. This complexity really forces us
- 18:40to tackle one of the most common objections or questions.
- 18:43How does this idea of a limited decree fit with Bible passages
- 18:46that sound universal, like First Timothy 2, where it says God
- 18:49wills all men to be saved? If only the elect are chosen for
- 18:52salvation, how can God desire everyone to be saved?
- 18:55That's a critical tension, and the sources devote significant
- 18:58attention to resolving it, arguing against what they'd see
- 19:01as a misreading of those verses. They approach it by
- 19:04distinguishing different aspects of God's will.
- 19:08First, God does genuinely offer pardon to all who seek it
- 19:11through repentance and faith. His general call and offer of
- 19:14mercy are universally presented. Anyone who comes on His terms
- 19:18will be received, however, and this is the key, the saving
- 19:21illumination of the Spirit, the work that actually produces that
- 19:24repentance and faith also has God's eternal election as its
- 19:27rule. OK, so the saving power is
- 19:29limited by the decree, even if the offer sounds general.
- 19:32But what about the specific phrase all men in passages like
- 19:35First Timothy 2? How do the sources interpret
- 19:37that? Their interpretation is crucial
- 19:39for maintaining the consistency of the doctrine of effectual
- 19:42grace. They argue that all men in that
- 19:45context doesn't mean every single individual human without
- 19:48exception. Instead, Paul is talking about
- 19:51classes or kinds of people, all sorts of men.
- 19:54He mentions kings and those in authority specifically in that
- 19:57passage. So the meaning is that God
- 19:59desires the salvation of people from all ranks and types of
- 20:02humanity. No category of person, Jew or
- 20:06Gentile, rich or poor, ruler or subject, is excluded from the
- 20:09possibility of being elected and called.
- 20:11So it's about all kinds of people rather than every single
- 20:14person. If it meant every single person,
- 20:16then the idea that God saving call is always effective would
- 20:18fall apart because clearly not every individual is saved.
- 20:21Exactly. Interpreting it as classes of
- 20:24men protects the understanding that when God sets out to save
- 20:27someone through the special call and the spirits work, he
- 20:30succeeds. His grace is effectual.
- 20:33And then regarding passages like Ezekiel, where God says he takes
- 20:36no pleasure in the death of the wicked, the sources explain the
- 20:39purpose of such statements for believers.
- 20:41It's an assurance God is ready and willing to pardon you the
- 20:44moment you turn to Him in repentance.
- 20:46And for the non elect, the reprobate, what's the purpose
- 20:49for them? For them, it highlights their
- 20:50guilt. It makes them feel, the sources
- 20:52say, that their transgression is doubled.
- 20:55God offered kindness, He expressed a desire for
- 20:58repentance, and they refused it. So while conversion itself is
- 21:02always entirely in God's hand because only He can give that
- 21:05new heart, the lack of conversion in the reprobate is
- 21:08justly charged to their own malice and willful reduction of
- 21:11the light and kindness shown to them.
- 21:13The Spirit's illuminating work is what makes the difference,
- 21:16and the resulting judgement is just.
- 21:18Wow. OK, so this deep dive has really
- 21:20walked us through a complex but interconnected chain of divine
- 21:24actions. It seems that far from being a
- 21:26doctrine that leads to uncertainty, when understood
- 21:29this way it actually provides a solid foundation for assurance.
- 21:32That's certainly the aim presented in these sources we've
- 21:35traced. The path election is the hidden
- 21:37grace based cause. The special call is God's
- 21:40manifest action. The spirits, inward life, giving
- 21:44work, faith produced by the call, and the spirit of adoption
- 21:47are the confirmation, the seal and guarantee in the believer's
- 21:50heart. And crucially, Christ is the
- 21:53safe mirror, the place we look to contemplate our standing with
- 21:56God, avoiding that abyss of speculation.
- 21:59And the sources do claim that when you examine this doctrine
- 22:02properly, as it is contained in His Word, the result is in fear
- 22:05but inestimable fruit of comfort.
- 22:07It's supposed to be the best confirmation of your faith,
- 22:10grounding your conscience securely.
- 22:12Yes, because the certainty doesn't rest on your own
- 22:14feelings or your ability to hold on.
- 22:16It rests on the divine chain itself, God's eternal choice,
- 22:20His effectual call, the Spirit's seal, and ultimately on the fact
- 22:24that Christ Himself receives and keeps everyone the Father and
- 22:28trusts in Him. He promises they shall never
- 22:30perish. Our confidence is in His grip,
- 22:33not our own. So given that the safe place to
- 22:36look is Christ the mirror, and we're warned against trying to
- 22:38read the tea leaves of our own hearts or speculate about the
- 22:41hidden decree, here's something to think about.
- 22:44How do you recognize those daily benefits or tokens of grace in
- 22:47your life? The evidence of the spirits work
- 22:49in a healthy way without that slipping back into the kind of
- 22:51self focused analysis that the source is warned against.
- 22:54That dangerous staring into the Whirlpool?
- 22:57Something for you to ponder. We'll leave it there for this
- 22:59deep dive on reformed thinking.
