- 0:05Speaker 1: Artists on artists on artists on artists today, get in line.
- 0:09Speaker 1: It's time for festival talk.
- 0:11Speaker 2: One of the most competitive parts of filmmaking is breaking
- 0:14Speaker 2: into the scene, and that is shown through short films.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Can south by Southwest, try Becka. These are just some
- 0:23Speaker 3: of the films that filmmakers are trying to make the
- 0:26Speaker 3: cut into festival programming. Today. We talk to festival programmers.
- 0:31Speaker 1: So get that edit together, make sure it's about ten
- 0:34Speaker 1: to fifteen minutes, if not shorter, and put a little
- 0:38Speaker 1: slate before it. Talk about all the things you need
- 0:40Speaker 1: to fix in order for it to go up in
- 0:43Speaker 1: the festival. And let's listen in.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Well, festivals, festivals, we're talking festivals.
- 0:52Speaker 1: We're talking festivals. We jacking festivals. We can have a blast,
- 0:55Speaker 1: talk about festivals.
- 0:56Speaker 4: The circuit, the circuit is that a bird?
- 1:00Speaker 1: Do we have a bird?
- 1:02Speaker 4: You know? It's Lucy the Bird. I'm here, Lucy the Bird.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Do you mean bird as a woman or birds in bird?
- 1:11Speaker 2: You know me, Lucy the Bird.
- 1:14Speaker 1: He talk about festivals because there's some sort of thing
- 1:19Speaker 1: I learned about Lucy the Bird.
- 1:20Speaker 5: The bird sitting next to Lucy's The bird is so
- 1:24Speaker 5: funny and good and it's so original.
- 1:28Speaker 1: In the festival industry. We like to sit around together
- 1:30Speaker 1: sometimes talk about how we share festivals. We always talk
- 1:33Speaker 1: to each other, we always go back and forth. So
- 1:34Speaker 1: it's really fun. The network is tight.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Really, I love to.
- 1:39Speaker 5: To to to have a network of people and talk
- 1:42Speaker 5: about what films you're putting in, what films you're not someone.
- 1:47Speaker 3: I'm sorry, did someone just get an email?
- 1:49Speaker 1: Did they just get a submission? Is it another.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Submission from a from a young filmmaker?
- 1:53Speaker 1: Actually, did just get a submission? It's really exciting. Should I?
- 1:56Speaker 1: I'm not probably supposed to share other people' submissions? Should I?
- 2:00Speaker 1: Right now?
- 2:00Speaker 2: I think I know what it is. Is it that
- 2:02Speaker 2: young animated one about the Little Ball?
- 2:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it's called Little Ball.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Yes, I've seen it. It come around to my desk,
- 2:10Speaker 2: all of our desk.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Did you did you what you guys like about Little Ball?
- 2:13Speaker 1: I haven't watched it obviously. What can I look forward to?
- 2:15Speaker 1: What do you think they need to improve?
- 2:17Speaker 5: I think the Little Ball is a magnanimous piece of
- 2:20Speaker 5: a ball entering its life and decaying, and so I
- 2:24Speaker 5: think you're going to find it a magnanimous piece. It
- 2:28Speaker 5: has a little problem with lengths okay, and a little problem.
- 2:32Speaker 1: With some of the steals. And as always in every
- 2:36Speaker 1: short film, the sound is garbage.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yeah, and do you know why I know I can't
- 2:43Speaker 2: ignore that that email because I know because because I
- 2:49Speaker 2: wanted to flag it because I think it's good for
- 2:51Speaker 2: your festival.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I was gonna wonder, Yeah, I was going to ask
- 2:53Speaker 1: the you accept it in the ear festival. No, I
- 2:55Speaker 1: passed on the Little Ball.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I also passed on Little Ball because I have to
- 3:00Speaker 3: size once more. The sound is garbage and it's just
- 3:02Speaker 3: a cat playing with a ball of yarn for about
- 3:04Speaker 3: seventeen to eighteen minutes.
- 3:06Speaker 1: It's a man.
- 3:06Speaker 3: I had a title card at the end that says
- 3:08Speaker 3: this was about homophobia.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Oh really, but okay.
- 3:12Speaker 2: That's why I sat down here today and I sent
- 3:15Speaker 2: my little bird minions that's what I call my interns.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I saw you and I said, you know, the ball
- 3:20Speaker 2: is perfect for your festival.
- 3:22Speaker 1: It's good for me.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And that's why you got that email because my little
- 3:27Speaker 2: bird girls, my bird girls, And I said said to
- 3:30Speaker 2: him that film.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Well, I think I appreciate it. That's really awesome. I
- 3:34Speaker 1: should introduce myself. My name is David Tapolo, I wrote
- 3:37Speaker 1: blast festal.
- 3:39Speaker 4: I said, this is a blast Fest film.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Blastfest is are really fun festival. It's made by
- 3:44Speaker 1: film people, people who love making movies and we like
- 3:46Speaker 1: to get together and we like just put movies we
- 3:48Speaker 1: love up and we do a lot of reunions of
- 3:51Speaker 1: old cult films. We do a lot of really exciting stuff.
- 3:54Speaker 1: It's really really fun. And we also we are known
- 3:57Speaker 1: as the film festival the most act night life and
- 4:02Speaker 1: like events. Besides movies, we do a lot of fun stuff.
- 4:07Speaker 3: The supplemental programming.
- 4:09Speaker 1: We're like really big on some program programming, and we
- 4:11Speaker 1: always like to set up places for people to meet
- 4:13Speaker 1: and have a lot of fun together. So that's what
- 4:15Speaker 1: we're up to. David A Paolo Blastfest.
- 4:18Speaker 2: And this is a year you're doing what is it
- 4:21Speaker 2: called the the White Claw Event.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, we're doing We're doing the White Claw Machine.
- 4:27Speaker 1: So it's it's it's a human uh get gets tied up,
- 4:32Speaker 1: he drinks a bunch of white clothes. This is an activation.
- 4:34Speaker 1: We're doing it in Bryant Park.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I have a couple of films I want to send
- 4:37Speaker 2: you for this White Claw Machine film.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Oh so that's actually not any sort of film. It's
- 4:41Speaker 1: not related to the film. We're not gonna be showing
- 4:42Speaker 1: movies starting it. It's just an activation for the filmmakers.
- 4:45Speaker 5: Yeah, these tying up filmmakers and making some drink white.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Yeah. So it's basically a zip line, but it dips
- 4:51Speaker 1: really low and you can grab a white claw out
- 4:53Speaker 1: of a out of a cool I know.
- 4:56Speaker 2: But I have a couple of films that came along
- 4:58Speaker 2: my My My Bracket that are about excessive drinking that
- 5:02Speaker 2: I think might pair well with the white Claw.
- 5:05Speaker 1: You can send it my way. I still don't think
- 5:06Speaker 1: you understand exactly what I'm doing with it, but sending
- 5:09Speaker 1: my way. I'm happy to look at it because Blastfest
- 5:12Speaker 1: is inclusive and open for everybody.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Can I ask because the white cloth thing reminded me,
- 5:16Speaker 3: did you guys get that email about the new CIA
- 5:19Speaker 3: hard Seltzer that they're trying to do activations for.
- 5:22Speaker 1: No, CIA's starting new hot Selsler.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Yes, CIA is starting a hard Seltzer. I don't know
- 5:26Speaker 3: if it might step on your toes with white Claw,
- 5:28Speaker 3: but it's apparently it's big and it's bubbly. Yes, five
- 5:32Speaker 3: percent alcohol, yes.
- 5:34Speaker 2: But that's what But my question is, and I think
- 5:37Speaker 2: everyone at this table would love it. It's about with sponsorships,
- 5:41Speaker 2: with these film festivals. It's about curating films that go
- 5:45Speaker 2: well with.
- 5:45Speaker 1: It sometimes, right.
- 5:47Speaker 2: I know that you famously, famously don't like making your
- 5:51Speaker 2: films anything about the festival.
- 5:53Speaker 4: And the parties.
- 5:54Speaker 2: No, no, no, yeah, but I think I like curating
- 5:57Speaker 2: films and the festivals and the years and the themes
- 6:00Speaker 2: of the festivals with almost like a dinner party where
- 6:05Speaker 2: there's a theme of the year, with the films and
- 6:08Speaker 2: with the filmmakers.
- 6:10Speaker 5: This is a perfect opportunity for you to introduce yourself.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I feel so, don't you do that?
- 6:16Speaker 2: Yes, yes, I'm Lucy the Bird. I do Sundances Young Filmmakers,
- 6:21Speaker 2: short film section that I am a right age of
- 6:28Speaker 2: seventy one and I've been doing this five forty two years.
- 6:34Speaker 1: One of the greats, one of the greats, right here,
- 6:36Speaker 1: Lucy Bird, one of the gas. That's a quick question.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Is she peaking like crazy right now? I'll take a
- 6:40Speaker 1: look for the Probably a lot. She's actually fine. Great.
- 6:44Speaker 4: I moved back so far and maybe this will fuck
- 6:48Speaker 4: me for the day.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Oh you're good. You're good, Lucy the Bird.
- 6:54Speaker 3: You could never get fucked for the day.
- 6:56Speaker 2: But basically, I've been doing this for forty two years.
- 7:00Speaker 4: And and Hi, I've been.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Doing this for forty two years. Basically did Holly Shorts
- 7:05Speaker 2: for thirty eight years and finally started doing Sundance.
- 7:10Speaker 1: But a magnanimous jump you've made in your career. I
- 7:14Speaker 1: love it. I can't believe we're talking to somebody who
- 7:16Speaker 1: programmed Sundance. It's so amazing.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Yes, this is really the look at the If you're
- 7:20Speaker 3: a young filmmaker, you better open those earballs because Lucy
- 7:23Speaker 3: saying Bird is gonna be your ticket in.
- 7:26Speaker 5: She is a wonderful person who lets in allsy young
- 7:29Speaker 5: talent for our the rest of our filmmakers, in such
- 7:32Speaker 5: a beautiful, magnanimous way.
- 7:35Speaker 1: It's really awesome. You also, I heard have transformed the
- 7:38Speaker 1: city of Park City. I heard that in you completely
- 7:41Speaker 1: when you moved in there. I heard it's like a
- 7:44Speaker 1: different city. Birds so many yeah, yeah its have come.
- 7:47Speaker 1: You brought all sorts of exact birds and they got
- 7:49Speaker 1: loose that one day. So now there's so many pretty
- 7:51Speaker 1: birds in Park City, Utah.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Well they said.
- 7:54Speaker 2: That they can hear me in the bars, so the
- 7:57Speaker 2: young filmmakers will say, I hear the bar. I hear
- 8:01Speaker 2: the bird is the word, so they'll run to the
- 8:04Speaker 2: bar so they could try to talk to me, because
- 8:07Speaker 2: I think after we do the introductions, I have a
- 8:10Speaker 2: question about networking with these.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Young kids wearing me dry. Yeah, birds, you let loose.
- 8:20Speaker 4: That's a legal thing.
- 8:24Speaker 3: For her to not comment about the birds. I would
- 8:26Speaker 3: disassociate yourself from the wild birds if you can.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Yes, I'm I'm in talks with Utah. We're making a deal.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Well, how's it going, everybody. I'm Paula Saint Paula. I
- 8:36Speaker 3: am from Saint Paul, Minnesota, and my film festival is,
- 8:42Speaker 3: of course the NPC Film Festival, that's North Phoenix Cinema
- 8:47Speaker 3: and I am the first and only b Roll film
- 8:50Speaker 3: festival in the world. So basically, young filmmakers will send
- 8:56Speaker 3: us exterior shots, sort of people walking around be role
- 9:01Speaker 3: is a is a term for nothing is really happening
- 9:04Speaker 3: in the scene. It's it's just there's no characters, there's
- 9:07Speaker 3: no anything. It's it's sort of exterior shots of things happening,
- 9:11Speaker 3: be it people walking around the mall or waves crashing
- 9:15Speaker 3: on a beach. Insert shots of people putting soda in
- 9:20Speaker 3: a soda machine. Stuff like that. So we look for
- 9:23Speaker 3: the most innovative be role in the world. From this,
- 9:28Speaker 3: from this new generation of b roll filmmakers.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Paula is an amazing worker. She really knows her taste
- 9:35Speaker 5: and she knows what she likes. It is amazing to
- 9:38Speaker 5: see some of the short films that come out of
- 9:40Speaker 5: your festival.
- 9:41Speaker 1: My favorite was New York Exteriors. I loved that short.
- 9:47Speaker 3: And let me tell you, it is hard to find
- 9:49Speaker 3: a new take on New York be role because I
- 9:52Speaker 3: gotta say, I see a lot of the same shit.
- 9:54Speaker 3: It's a pigeon walking around, it's a it's a person
- 9:58Speaker 3: dressed in it. It's an old lady with we glasses
- 10:01Speaker 3: walking around. It's some it's a construction worker.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Paula, you anything avant garde I see I send to you,
- 10:08Speaker 2: and you go, this isn't this isn't b roll.
- 10:11Speaker 4: But you are just so you are, you are just
- 10:15Speaker 4: so artsy.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Yes, thank you, and I and I and I do
- 10:19Speaker 3: want to say because I get a lot of these submissions,
- 10:22Speaker 3: because I want to give all of the films a chance,
- 10:24Speaker 3: Because a lot of the times I'll write back and
- 10:25Speaker 3: I see something with potential and I say, hey, this
- 10:28Speaker 3: is a great short. Film. If you just send me
- 10:30Speaker 3: an edit of the b roll parts, that would be
- 10:32Speaker 3: amazing and then we can show it.
- 10:34Speaker 1: I also think it's amazing because you're one of the
- 10:35Speaker 1: first festivals I've ever of all time to have a
- 10:39Speaker 1: length minimum. So a lot of your footage you can't
- 10:43Speaker 1: You can't submit something unless it's forty five minutes at least.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I hearn.
- 10:48Speaker 3: The filmmakers are really tough. It's a lot of it's
- 10:50Speaker 3: a lot of b roll, and you gotta keep the
- 10:53Speaker 3: audience awake for it. That's part of the rule. If
- 10:56Speaker 3: the audience falls asleep during the b roll and they're.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Just But my buddy was in he said, no prodding.
- 11:01Speaker 1: You're not allowed to prod in the audience. So it
- 11:04Speaker 1: has to be the movie.
- 11:05Speaker 3: It has to be the movie. There's no poking, there's
- 11:07Speaker 3: no prodding. There's no caffeine. No caffeine at our festival.
- 11:12Speaker 3: We want to strength test the strength and the resilience of.
- 11:16Speaker 1: The b roll.
- 11:18Speaker 5: And the most interesting thing I find about your art
- 11:21Speaker 5: is the delineation you put between.
- 11:24Speaker 1: B roll and royalty free footage. It's a line in
- 11:28Speaker 1: the sand and you have drawn this.
- 11:29Speaker 3: And let me tell you something about ice stock poachers,
- 11:33Speaker 3: because they will come to this festival and they will
- 11:36Speaker 3: try shutter stock will get in there, stock Photo will
- 11:39Speaker 3: get in there, Getty will get in there, and they
- 11:41Speaker 3: will try and wrestle this bee roll out of They
- 11:43Speaker 3: will try and approach the fee maker filmmakers after and
- 11:46Speaker 3: they'll say, get us on our site. We want this shit.
- 11:49Speaker 3: This is stock photo content. This is absolutely nothing, and
- 11:52Speaker 3: we want it and we have to bat them away
- 11:55Speaker 3: like flies, because there is an art to b role
- 11:58Speaker 3: and it must be preserved. It's a die your and
- 12:01Speaker 3: what do.
- 12:01Speaker 2: You think they're It's like pennies they're fighting for, Like
- 12:04Speaker 2: what kind of money are they really fighting for?
- 12:06Speaker 3: They're parting for I don't know, eighteen dollars for commercial
- 12:08Speaker 3: use for zero. Well, who are you?
- 12:13Speaker 5: That's fantastic to hear. Well, my name is Klaus Buvogari.
- 12:19Speaker 5: I am a Swiss German Man who has moved to America.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Yes are you? Are you? Are you related to the
- 12:26Speaker 1: Bulgari family, but you pronounced the V in Bulgari. No relation,
- 12:31Speaker 1: completely different names right.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Now, sheep Gari is car right.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Bulgari's like watches and clothing and stuff like that. That's Bugatti.
- 12:42Speaker 1: So I do have a title, I have a type.
- 12:49Speaker 5: I do have a tie to the Boulvogari family, but
- 12:51Speaker 5: I do not like to talk about it.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Yes, they are Swiss German. Yes I am Swiss German. Yes,
- 12:57Speaker 1: all Swiss German people are related. But I would like.
- 13:01Speaker 5: To talk about the film festival I helped procure. It
- 13:05Speaker 5: is called the Ionic West Film Festival. It is hosted
- 13:09Speaker 5: in Reno, Nevada, and it is all about the films
- 13:14Speaker 5: that don't make sense. We have a really fun time
- 13:17Speaker 5: trying to get in all the avant garde films, the
- 13:19Speaker 5: short films that you watch and kind of go, huh,
- 13:23Speaker 5: that is what we're aiming for.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I heard that since the pandemic, your submission reports were
- 13:28Speaker 2: up by eight hundred.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Percent, Absolutely eight hundred percent.
- 13:31Speaker 5: And you would not believe how many films have a
- 13:34Speaker 5: metaphor for the COVID, how many films have a metaphor
- 13:38Speaker 5: for the isolation of COVID.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Yes, I sent, when I I sent so many of
- 13:43Speaker 2: my films, so most of you, guys, I don't send
- 13:46Speaker 2: a lot of films to you.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Sweet thing, please paull it because look I get.
- 13:49Speaker 1: It, it's niche, it's she probably can't mean to the minimum.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Wouldn't believe though, I.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Just ki't mean.
- 13:54Speaker 2: We have a lot, but I sent so many minimum.
- 13:58Speaker 2: I'll talk to them, but it's no go ahead. But
- 14:02Speaker 2: I send so many films to class.
- 14:05Speaker 5: We are kind of to catch all the trash machine
- 14:09Speaker 5: of the film world. And not that our films are trash,
- 14:12Speaker 5: it's just that a lot of films don't belong a
- 14:14Speaker 5: lot of other places.
- 14:16Speaker 3: I love the slogan on your submission website, which is
- 14:20Speaker 3: if you don't understand it, you're not smart.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Enough, exactly.
- 14:23Speaker 3: And that's what kind of books down on others in
- 14:25Speaker 3: a way.
- 14:26Speaker 5: If your if your film makes sense, it's stupid. It's
- 14:30Speaker 5: worthless to me. It doesn't, It does not get anything.
- 14:35Speaker 5: It's commercial. Why don't you just go.
- 14:38Speaker 1: To a Marvel movie. Why don't you just get out
- 14:41Speaker 1: of here and do and do Batman? Why don't you
- 14:44Speaker 1: Why don't you just why don't you get out of
- 14:46Speaker 1: here do Terminator? Because that's movies that makes sense and boring. Yeah, Well,
- 14:52Speaker 1: I want to see a child that has a son.
- 14:55Speaker 3: I well, technically every child once a child.
- 15:01Speaker 1: No, I want to see a child who has a son.
- 15:03Speaker 4: My birds have sons.
- 15:05Speaker 5: I want to see a movie about a leaf going
- 15:08Speaker 5: through the life of a leaf and it ends on
- 15:10Speaker 5: a story about some sort of xenophobia.
- 15:13Speaker 1: That is the films that I'm looking for.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Yeah, when I see a film that, I can tell
- 15:19Speaker 2: a lot of money has been put into it, and
- 15:23Speaker 2: I can't follow if there's a protagonist or an antagonist,
- 15:27Speaker 2: but the sound is impeccable, and I can tell that
- 15:32Speaker 2: maybe there is maybe a Nepo baby involved.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Well, that film probably is getting into all our festivals,
- 15:38Speaker 1: and I would love to have one would sound.
- 15:43Speaker 5: I'm sending a strange clouds, And I don't want to
- 15:45Speaker 5: claim that I have all the avant Gode films, you know,
- 15:50Speaker 5: because the short film medium is pretty avant God, you know.
- 15:55Speaker 5: But I have a lot of the ones that even
- 15:57Speaker 5: more avant Cades than avant God.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Also, I love you so much and I think you're wonderful.
- 16:02Speaker 1: But I think this is probably where we disagree to most,
- 16:04Speaker 1: because I love popular movies. I have we have hots
- 16:08Speaker 1: of screaming matches. We've had some screaming matches. One of
- 16:11Speaker 1: my little uh festival activities work to do forty eight
- 16:14Speaker 1: album Marvel Film fest. So we like to say you
- 16:16Speaker 1: have to pick a comic booking to adapt it in
- 16:18Speaker 1: forty eight hours. And it's really fun because people making
- 16:20Speaker 1: things that are cardboard people and things at a at
- 16:23Speaker 1: a milkcott and stuff like that. It's really fun stuff.
- 16:25Speaker 1: It's really celebrating the accessibility of movies. And so I
- 16:28Speaker 1: think that's a little bit where we differ because I
- 16:30Speaker 1: just like ever being able to be destroying the medium
- 16:33Speaker 1: every time you talk and you have your.
- 16:36Speaker 2: And I sent you the ball because that movie is
- 16:38Speaker 2: just I can't play with a plot.
- 16:40Speaker 1: It's really fun. I think it does be a little
- 16:43Speaker 1: more into b roll, but you don't like it as much,
- 16:45Speaker 1: and so that's what's difficult about it exactly.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Well, you have that that whole section you have that
- 16:51Speaker 3: I really enjoyed that night where it was cat videos
- 16:55Speaker 3: and cocaine yeah.
- 16:57Speaker 1: And coke yeah, can.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Cook yeah, Yeah, just a fun time.
- 17:00Speaker 1: It was really fun kevins with cocaine. That was it
- 17:03Speaker 1: was a non official event for VIPs, So I appreciate
- 17:07Speaker 1: you bringing it up, but it was really really exacting. No,
- 17:14Speaker 1: it's okay. Cops Love My Festival.
- 17:18Speaker 5: The amount of short films you have about cops having
- 17:20Speaker 5: a tough time at a job guys, it is so hard.
- 17:23Speaker 3: To get a cop to attend a film festival. I
- 17:25Speaker 3: cannot tell you how.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Much I'm telling you, guys. I'm telling you guys, people
- 17:31Speaker 1: line up for my festivals. I don't know what you
- 17:33Speaker 1: guys are doing this different when I'm doing I actually do,
- 17:36Speaker 1: but I don't want to bring it up. I'm in
- 17:37Speaker 1: New York. Guys say it like it is. But the
- 17:39Speaker 1: thing is, I just like to make a thing that
- 17:41Speaker 1: people like to come to. So that's klite, Klaus and I.
- 17:44Speaker 1: That's what probably you and I I think you are changing.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I aim to like to make us things that people do,
- 17:49Speaker 1: not exactly you're making it unbearable, and I think you're
- 17:51Speaker 1: alienating filmmakers from the rest of.
- 17:53Speaker 5: The Horrible is a strong one because I would say
- 17:55Speaker 5: your family section that is all about the family struggling
- 17:58Speaker 5: on a road trip is get a little boring to me.
- 18:01Speaker 1: It's totally a bit unwatchable. And I think you'd becoming
- 18:04Speaker 1: so elitist as a filmmaker that you're gonna not only
- 18:06Speaker 1: be unhappy with yourself, but you're gonna be unhappy with
- 18:08Speaker 1: the way you've treated the future of the end. And
- 18:10Speaker 1: I feel you like you've sold your sots a devil
- 18:12Speaker 1: for little short films.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Okay, code word devil, it's time to pivot. Let's talk about.
- 18:19Speaker 4: My devil.
- 18:20Speaker 1: So is that we have a thing in the short
- 18:23Speaker 1: film world where if somebody says the devil, it's a
- 18:25Speaker 1: code worte, we pivot hard.
- 18:28Speaker 4: We ask you a question and the devil is brought in.
- 18:31Speaker 2: That sounds like it's feature material, Yes, exactly. The second
- 18:36Speaker 2: the devil is that sounds like act three, and we
- 18:38Speaker 2: simply don't do three acts.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Yes, because the short film does not have time to
- 18:43Speaker 3: accurately go into the depth of what the devil as
- 18:46Speaker 3: a metaphor means. So that's why we try to discourage it.
- 18:49Speaker 3: I have a question. I want to talk about a
- 18:51Speaker 3: staple of film festivals, which is, of course the talkback. Right.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I love the talk back. I love the talk.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Talk back in film festivals. And I want to know
- 19:01Speaker 3: how you guys approach talkbacks. Do you like them? Do
- 19:05Speaker 3: you hate them?
- 19:06Speaker 1: Well, I'm actually very interested in your approach to talkbacks
- 19:09Speaker 1: because most of yours are not directors per se, but
- 19:14Speaker 1: people visit camera.
- 19:15Speaker 6: Oh.
- 19:15Speaker 3: I actually take offense to that, because I believe you
- 19:18Speaker 3: can direct b role in that you can direct a
- 19:20Speaker 3: camera to a certain position and focus on that position.
- 19:24Speaker 3: I'd push back hard against that. I think I've met
- 19:27Speaker 3: some great b roll directors. My nephew, the one of
- 19:35Speaker 3: the security camera footage people who operate CCTV, I think
- 19:39Speaker 3: are fantastic b role directors, and they're not being taken
- 19:42Speaker 3: advantage of. It's so interesting to hear b roll directors talk. Yeah,
- 19:50Speaker 3: but we unfortunately don't do that, and we don't let
- 19:52Speaker 3: them talk.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Did you choose that? Did you choose that?
- 19:58Speaker 2: So you asking about the chalk back? You chose you?
- 20:04Speaker 1: Do you ask the questions?
- 20:07Speaker 3: I really wanted to talk about it because I wanted
- 20:09Speaker 3: to talk about how I don't do it.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Well.
- 20:16Speaker 3: So what we do is we invite the directors up
- 20:19Speaker 3: and then if we can find one of the actors
- 20:21Speaker 3: who was accidentally in the b roll, if we can
- 20:24Speaker 3: track down one of those people, yeah, and then it
- 20:28Speaker 3: usually uh, we will will We ask them and we
- 20:33Speaker 3: say we want you to think about this question, but
- 20:35Speaker 3: we don't want you to say anything because that breaks
- 20:36Speaker 3: the sanctity of the b roll. We really get into
- 20:39Speaker 3: some moral quandaries and rules that really rigidly sort of
- 20:43Speaker 3: affect the way we do things. But we do do
- 20:46Speaker 3: the foundational film festival process of inviting the director up
- 20:51Speaker 3: and then just sort of moving the mic back and
- 20:53Speaker 3: forth in a way that that sounds just horrible to
- 20:57Speaker 3: listen to.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I feel like I'm there that with the.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Yea and the wires and the crackling. And then every
- 21:04Speaker 3: filmmaker they go in And this is why we wanted
- 21:07Speaker 3: to avoid this. Every filmmaker they take the mic and
- 21:09Speaker 3: they go, is this thing on? Can you hear me?
- 21:12Speaker 3: And they and the feedback, Oh my god, it's too much.
- 21:15Speaker 3: That's why we keep it silent so we can use
- 21:17Speaker 3: it b roll for later. For the first of all, anyway,
- 21:20Speaker 3: we like your filming a.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Talk back to use for b roll for a film
- 21:24Speaker 1: festival later. That is, so you're submitting the film festivals,
- 21:28Speaker 1: do you count that as your film?
- 21:35Speaker 3: Well, you've got covered by grand scheme. Oh, Lucina Bird
- 21:38Speaker 3: is calling. That's how you know your film is accepted.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Oh now I'm just sending an email anyway, Oh.
- 21:45Speaker 3: You were voice to texting the email.
- 21:48Speaker 5: So with my approach to the talk back, I feel
- 21:52Speaker 5: it is important to give the filmmaker a chance to
- 21:57Speaker 5: try to explain your film. Unfortunately, leave with every single
- 22:01Speaker 5: one of my talkbacks, they will not do it, and
- 22:04Speaker 5: then instead they go, well what did you think it
- 22:06Speaker 5: was about? Which runs into a big problem because now
- 22:09Speaker 5: nobody really understands what the film is about. But rather
- 22:13Speaker 5: than broad strokes, it's usually a metaphor for suicide.
- 22:17Speaker 3: That is, usually you love that because you're antagonizing the audience.
- 22:20Speaker 5: Yes, so I found another approach is just as simple,
- 22:24Speaker 5: very silly, dumb questions like oh I like that shot
- 22:27Speaker 5: of the mountain? What mountain is that? And they kind
- 22:31Speaker 5: of blindsided, don't know what to do. Oh that's a
- 22:34Speaker 5: good actor. How old are they? And you move on
- 22:36Speaker 5: really quick. You get one question and they done it.
- 22:39Speaker 5: The talkback is done in minutes.
- 22:42Speaker 4: It feels like.
- 22:42Speaker 2: The opposite of your philosophy because like everything.
- 22:49Speaker 1: What about it? Is it the opposite of my philosophy.
- 22:51Speaker 2: I just feel like you love everything so camvloaded and
- 22:54Speaker 2: you love complexity.
- 22:56Speaker 1: So why not leave it in the convolution?
- 22:59Speaker 4: Okay, I love hanging out.
- 23:00Speaker 3: With you guys, because nothing everything we do is poking holes.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Absolutely, that's what it is to make a short.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Film, you know. I do want to mention my talkbacks.
- 23:11Speaker 1: We actually have a lot of fun with them. We
- 23:12Speaker 1: actually have a really good time. And we changed it
- 23:14Speaker 1: up because what I like to do is if you're
- 23:16Speaker 1: in the talk back, sometimes we tell you what it's
- 23:19Speaker 1: gonna be. There's always something different. So a lot of
- 23:21Speaker 1: the times we're doing genre switch but talkbacks. So so
- 23:25Speaker 1: all of a sudden, we play a little thing of this, Oh,
- 23:27Speaker 1: this person wants to ask the question, but they have
- 23:28Speaker 1: to ask it like they're in a Western, and they
- 23:31Speaker 1: have to answer it like they're in a Western. And
- 23:33Speaker 1: sometimes we'll play music, we'll do dance backs.
- 23:36Speaker 4: Yeah, didn't you do a talkback hosted by Drew Carrey?
- 23:38Speaker 1: I did a talkback hosted by drews Drew Carrey's whose
- 23:44Speaker 1: film is it? Anyway? We got these filmmakers up and
- 23:47Speaker 1: they had to do short for them, improv and it
- 23:49Speaker 1: was so funny because it was we saw at the movie,
- 23:51Speaker 1: we don't need to We don't have any questions about it.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Because also the movies that usually get into blast Fest,
- 23:57Speaker 1: you wouldn't have any questions about them. If I'm gonna
- 24:00Speaker 1: be honest, they're really fun, they're really interesting, they are
- 24:04Speaker 1: the huh yeah, they kind of go. They're kind of
- 24:07Speaker 1: something to do in an afternoon. I would say the
- 24:10Speaker 1: best times to see a blast Fest screening are one
- 24:14Speaker 1: PM to four pm. The day screenings are killer. The
- 24:19Speaker 1: nighttime screenings are boring because you feel like you should
- 24:22Speaker 1: be somewhere else. But when you're watching these movies in
- 24:24Speaker 1: the middle of the day, when you have nothing else
- 24:26Speaker 1: to do, you're enjoying.
- 24:27Speaker 3: I feel so bad for the movies that you put
- 24:30Speaker 3: at night because you schedule so many uh attractive supplemental
- 24:35Speaker 3: programming during it. Exactly like the rom coms are competing
- 24:38Speaker 3: with an ice machine and and and a slipping slide exactly.
- 24:43Speaker 7: We have the new Julia You got an ice machine
- 24:46Speaker 7: this year? Yeah, it's crazy. It makes me so fast,
- 24:51Speaker 7: It makes me so fast. I've got to come come
- 24:54Speaker 7: see the ice machine.
- 24:55Speaker 1: It's so fun. Yes, got it. We had we had.
- 24:57Speaker 1: We had a really difficult situation last year. We had
- 25:00Speaker 1: the new Julian Moore film and it was scheduled against
- 25:05Speaker 1: Central Park Spin in the Bottle, and so it was
- 25:08Speaker 1: people were.
- 25:09Speaker 3: That's a public health risk, that's disgusting.
- 25:12Speaker 5: We are not far away from COVID enough. Was that
- 25:14Speaker 5: not to be considered a public health but it was.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Blast Fist got the new Julian Moore film.
- 25:20Speaker 1: It was awesome. It was awesome, It was really really good.
- 25:22Speaker 1: We had a lot of great programming that year, but
- 25:25Speaker 1: we also had much better activities and so that was
- 25:29Speaker 1: kind of difficult. But I kind of leaned into I'm
- 25:32Speaker 1: I'm an entertainer who likes movies, so I'm leaning on
- 25:35Speaker 1: entertainment are Yeah.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Well, what is your background in entertainment?
- 25:39Speaker 1: So? I watched movies when I was a kid. I
- 25:44Speaker 1: was obsessed always. I was. I was that kid who
- 25:49Speaker 1: when you were on the playground he was talking about
- 25:53Speaker 1: Jurassic Park, you know, I was talking about other things.
- 25:56Speaker 4: Like that, and how cute for you.
- 25:59Speaker 5: You also means that you've been trying to write your
- 26:01Speaker 5: own short film for a while.
- 26:03Speaker 1: I have. I just can't figure out how to use
- 26:05Speaker 1: final draft. I don't understand where it saves. I try
- 26:10Speaker 1: to print it in. The formatting is different. I just
- 26:13Speaker 1: can't figure it out.
- 26:14Speaker 3: It's subscription based now too. It's tough.
- 26:18Speaker 1: So, Lucy, what is your talk back like? Yeah, and
- 26:22Speaker 1: why is it the most difficult thing to listen to?
- 26:25Speaker 4: Well, Well, well, it used to be that.
- 26:35Speaker 2: I it used to be hard to listen to because
- 26:38Speaker 2: I don't know why, but people find me loud. But
- 26:44Speaker 2: I and this is why I'm really curious. It leads
- 26:47Speaker 2: into my next question for everybody. I can't go to
- 26:52Speaker 2: my talkbacks anymore. I can't even go to my short
- 26:55Speaker 2: film slots because I am barred.
- 27:02Speaker 4: I do these.
- 27:03Speaker 2: I pick up, I pick a one of my festival,
- 27:06Speaker 2: one of my bird girls, and I'll pick like a
- 27:09Speaker 2: host or something.
- 27:10Speaker 3: No, this is fantastic. Do you want to Ricola?
- 27:12Speaker 1: I'm sorry, what do you.
- 27:14Speaker 4: Mean that I read? Why do people ask me if
- 27:16Speaker 4: I want to Recola?
- 27:18Speaker 3: I bet people ask you all the time.
- 27:20Speaker 4: I don't know what that stuff is.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Anyway, I can't go to these film festivals anymore. And
- 27:25Speaker 2: that's what I'm curious about, you guys, because the young'ins
- 27:29Speaker 2: ever since Granted Garwig, Paul Thomas Anderson, and ever since
- 27:35Speaker 2: i'd say south By, I'd say too, the short film industry,
- 27:40Speaker 2: ever since I'd say maybe twenty nineteen, the short films
- 27:45Speaker 2: have taken off, and it's been it's been a way
- 27:47Speaker 2: for young filmmakers to take off and get their features financed.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Right.
- 27:55Speaker 2: So it is almost impossible to be a programmer and.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Go to these film festivals because if.
- 28:03Speaker 2: They know you're a programmer, and maybe there's one unique
- 28:07Speaker 2: thing about you, like me my voice.
- 28:11Speaker 4: Or sometimes I wear a funny hat.
- 28:13Speaker 3: I bet you get bold in the streets, especially if.
- 28:16Speaker 4: I'm wearing the funny hat.
- 28:17Speaker 1: I see a funny hat, it looks it looks like
- 28:19Speaker 1: a jellyfish.
- 28:19Speaker 4: Yes, I wear a hat that looks like a jellyfish.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Have you considered not wearing the hat when you go outside?
- 28:26Speaker 4: What's up? For some reason, they still find me.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Well, it's because of the jellyfish glasses, So just say
- 28:32Speaker 3: that you gotta take those off too.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Now I need those to see so so anyway, I'll say,
- 28:41Speaker 2: I don't do. I set up the talk back. I
- 28:43Speaker 2: asked questions for the filmmakers depending on the theme of
- 28:45Speaker 2: the short film slot. But I can't go to the
- 28:47Speaker 2: talkbacks anymore. Sometimes I go to the celebrations or the parties,
- 28:51Speaker 2: but I can't go because these young filmmakers, they just
- 28:53Speaker 2: they give me their cards, they give me they sometimes
- 28:56Speaker 2: give me these q R codes.
- 28:57Speaker 1: You're like a celebrity to them, just because I've been
- 29:00Speaker 1: in the industry for a long time.
- 29:02Speaker 2: And then sometimes I'll get these bags of recall lives
- 29:05Speaker 2: with a q rcoud.
- 29:07Speaker 3: So they're bikolas and you said earlier that you didn't
- 29:10Speaker 3: know what they were. Now they're cough drops and uh
- 29:13Speaker 3: does that entice you to take one?
- 29:15Speaker 4: Now I find it offensive?
- 29:18Speaker 3: Oh I'm so sillary.
- 29:19Speaker 2: No, I just I just don't know what they I
- 29:20Speaker 2: don't want these, I just say, I say, go to
- 29:22Speaker 2: the submission process. Still the submissions. Everyone is treated equally,
- 29:27Speaker 2: unless your parents give me money.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Everyone is treated equally. And that's it.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Let's let's talk about by the way, I think everyone's
- 29:35Speaker 1: always asking me. I feel the same way. I'm getting
- 29:37Speaker 1: hounded all the time by people. Are you looking for? Yeah,
- 29:41Speaker 1: you look exactly at the local board game at today,
- 29:43Speaker 1: the board game bar that I go to every single day,
- 29:46Speaker 1: always talking to me about it. I'm trying. I'm just
- 29:48Speaker 1: sitting there trying to play Hide the Hide the Silver
- 29:51Speaker 1: and and and and they're trying to silver is one
- 29:53Speaker 1: of the best new games. It's so good. It makes
- 29:55Speaker 1: Catan look like Quelf. Truly.
- 29:58Speaker 4: I heard it's made from the creators Shoots and Ladders.
- 30:00Speaker 1: We truly hy the self of Mixedtail look like twelve
- 30:06Speaker 1: You hear me say it now, and it's not because
- 30:08Speaker 1: all three of them are sponsors.
- 30:09Speaker 2: I hate that we are giving filmmakers all this advice
- 30:12Speaker 2: and they're gonna sound bite that.
- 30:13Speaker 1: I know they probably are. Here's the thing, So what's
- 30:17Speaker 1: what do you need? What do you need to submit
- 30:19Speaker 1: your movie to be the movie to be selected? What
- 30:22Speaker 1: are you guys looking for you in your short films?
- 30:25Speaker 5: What I look for is we have a couple of
- 30:28Speaker 5: parameters on our websites that you can follow.
- 30:32Speaker 1: One.
- 30:33Speaker 5: We need a strong you know, everybody's looking for diversity
- 30:36Speaker 5: if we are too. We want a strong cast that's diverse.
- 30:39Speaker 5: We want a strong cruise that's diverse. We also are
- 30:42Speaker 5: looking for no diversity. We want something that doesn't screen
- 30:47Speaker 5: diversity at all.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Is not that at all. I don't know where going
- 30:52Speaker 1: we want.
- 30:52Speaker 3: We don't want to talk about that.
- 30:54Speaker 1: We don't always talk about how we're not looking for diversity.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Sometimes we talk. We don't talk about as much as
- 31:00Speaker 1: we should. Really don't you know, or like I.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Just don't seem to like it when you do that,
- 31:07Speaker 3: or like I said it.
- 31:08Speaker 2: I said it, I like when your parents give me money.
- 31:14Speaker 4: I am in a lawsuit.
- 31:15Speaker 2: I release I released fifteen tons of doves into the
- 31:21Speaker 2: state of Utah.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Oh tons, they measure them in tons.
- 31:26Speaker 4: So if your parents.
- 31:28Speaker 1: That sounds like an order.
- 31:31Speaker 4: If your parents.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Happen to be in law enforcement or in the government,
- 31:35Speaker 2: I love to know that when you submit your film.
- 31:38Speaker 5: Well, that's an interesting thing to bring up, you know,
- 31:41Speaker 5: because when we have all these parameters of submissions, but
- 31:45Speaker 5: if you have a Neppo baby, a star of persons
- 31:50Speaker 5: of note, We're going to bypass all those and put
- 31:53Speaker 5: your film in.
- 31:54Speaker 3: And that's interesting. Do you consider the filmmaker or do
- 31:57Speaker 3: you consider just the film itself? Because these filmmakers have
- 32:01Speaker 3: to submit lengthy applications where they basically explain their film
- 32:06Speaker 3: in several different prompts that really all ask the same questions.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Which just makes me really curious. Paula, what the hell
- 32:14Speaker 2: they fill out for yours?
- 32:16Speaker 3: Well, it's just as long as yours, believe it or not.
- 32:19Speaker 3: How I really want people to stretch. I really what
- 32:23Speaker 3: I'm looking for is a filmmaker who wants this enough
- 32:26Speaker 3: to get that Golden Bee roll trophy, that Golden Bee
- 32:32Speaker 3: that's awarded a course at the end of every North
- 32:34Speaker 3: Phoenix Film Festival North Phoenix Cinema. What were we talking
- 32:38Speaker 3: about the application, of course, So my questions are as follows,
- 32:43Speaker 3: what is this be roll of? Why is this bee
- 32:48Speaker 3: role of? When did you take it? How did you
- 32:52Speaker 3: take it? How you doing everything? Okay? What family history
- 33:00Speaker 3: movies you like watching lately? How would you fix the
- 33:04Speaker 3: climate change problem?
- 33:07Speaker 1: How would you.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Fix the labor union issues? How would you fix the
- 33:12Speaker 3: war in Ukraine? And then we sort of get into
- 33:15Speaker 3: beauty pageant questions, right because we're not just looking for bro,
- 33:19Speaker 3: we're looking for a b ro star.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Okay, so you care about the filmmaker mother the filmings, well,
- 33:25Speaker 2: I care about both.
- 33:25Speaker 3: And then the final question is, of course, are you
- 33:28Speaker 3: an older woman in cargo shorts that I can kind
- 33:31Speaker 3: of hang out with?
- 33:33Speaker 1: And that's the only questions that matters, isn't it.
- 33:36Speaker 3: That's ultimately Ultimately I'm looking for some.
- 33:39Speaker 5: Completely know how is it going to fix a war
- 33:41Speaker 5: in Ukraine? And go straight to the woman and.
- 33:44Speaker 3: The personality question. I just wanted you to have fun
- 33:46Speaker 3: with that one.
- 33:47Speaker 1: I do know my friends who submitted the festival to
- 33:50Speaker 1: your festival, they click no on that last question and
- 33:53Speaker 1: they got an immediate rejection.
- 33:55Speaker 3: Yeah, because I want to see how you answer it.
- 33:57Speaker 3: I want to know for someone. Let's be on this,
- 34:00Speaker 3: most of this industry people just want to make movies
- 34:03Speaker 3: with someone they can vibe with sure, exactly, And that's
- 34:06Speaker 3: what I'm looking for. I'm looking for someone who has
- 34:10Speaker 3: the vibes that are conducive. Because there's so many egos.
- 34:15Speaker 2: There are so many, so many, so.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Many.
- 34:21Speaker 4: I'm surprised. There's a lot of egos on the other side.
- 34:25Speaker 1: I mean, of course, the audience very ego.
- 34:28Speaker 5: When you go into a short film festival, the egos
- 34:32Speaker 5: in the audience, they are sitting there going convinced me,
- 34:34Speaker 5: this is why am I here. I'm here for my
- 34:37Speaker 5: one friend's short films. The rest of these are going
- 34:39Speaker 5: to talk.
- 34:40Speaker 3: Can I tell you what, when people go to a
- 34:42Speaker 3: film festival, they're already patting themselves on the back for
- 34:45Speaker 3: attending it, you know, And so that's a tough audience.
- 34:47Speaker 1: It's community service to them. Yes.
- 34:49Speaker 2: In the industry, we don't call it south By Southwest.
- 34:51Speaker 2: We call twelve Angry Men.
- 34:54Speaker 1: What we call it very clever wordplay.
- 34:56Speaker 5: We did on that one, very smart, but it plays
- 35:00Speaker 5: right into south By Southwest. Twelve Angry Man south By Southwest.
- 35:05Speaker 5: It's basically is the same. It's basically exactly the one
- 35:12Speaker 5: wonder one. So I've got to question now if that's
- 35:15Speaker 5: all right to segue because twelve angry man, I was.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Just gonna mention my application real quick. Yeah, it's it's
- 35:23Speaker 1: it's you gotta send the film. You got to mention
- 35:25Speaker 1: which catchphrases you're using, because I like to read the
- 35:28Speaker 1: catchphrases that, youse. We need catchphrases marketing genius, marketing your
- 35:32Speaker 1: favorite catch equips. And I'm talking about like those lines
- 35:35Speaker 1: the superhero sayings.
- 35:37Speaker 3: Like when they turned to their part, Yeah, they said,
- 35:40Speaker 3: here's the plan, and then the other person says, why
- 35:42Speaker 3: are they whispering?
- 35:43Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly what devices to catchphrase today?
- 35:48Speaker 5: The catchphrases like I am Iron Man, Oh, here we
- 35:51Speaker 5: go again.
- 35:52Speaker 1: I know, but that's what I'm saying. Sometimes those can
- 35:54Speaker 1: turn into catchphrases, you know, mister that much. So you
- 35:56Speaker 1: said the film you have one person's catchphraises a whispering No, no,
- 36:01Speaker 1: that was an example that she had. I didn't confused, confused, you.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Just said little quips and.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Then of course thank you so much, okay, thank you,
- 36:15Speaker 1: and uh yeah, and then I it's it's it's just
- 36:17Speaker 1: a lot of what what are your dietary restrictions? What
- 36:19Speaker 1: kind of things do you like to do? Do you
- 36:21Speaker 1: have any access to uh roller ranks or warehouses and
- 36:25Speaker 1: stuff like that.
- 36:26Speaker 2: I had a I had a young filmmaker asked my
- 36:27Speaker 2: advice on how to get into blast Fest because oh yeah,
- 36:30Speaker 2: they couldn't get in the South By. I think I
- 36:32Speaker 2: emailed you about it.
- 36:33Speaker 1: I think I let them in.
- 36:34Speaker 4: Yeah, Lucy Saint James.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I put Lucy Saint James in the headliner.
- 36:39Speaker 4: No, I'm Lucy Saint Birt.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Right, I forgot people are related by last name.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Let her in, right? Classic.
- 36:47Speaker 4: You know what I told her to do. I told
- 36:48Speaker 4: her to send a crazy video in. She's the girl
- 36:50Speaker 4: who sent you a video of her going down a slide.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Oh yeah, slide girl. Yeah. I gave her a big
- 36:57Speaker 1: spot because she sent me that video. I didn't watch
- 36:59Speaker 1: the film. I can't. We just see it at the festival, Yes,
- 37:01Speaker 1: I had to do. You watch film not frequently? No,
- 37:05Speaker 1: I just like to know if they're fun and I
- 37:06Speaker 1: like to know that. That's why I like to read
- 37:08Speaker 1: the catchphrases and then when when I see them, I go, well,
- 37:10Speaker 1: should have put that and then oh happy, I got that.
- 37:13Speaker 5: I had a young filmmaker who made kind of a
- 37:16Speaker 5: survivor like auditions. Oh yeah, I submitted it to you
- 37:21Speaker 5: about how fun and charmings they are and how good
- 37:24Speaker 5: at the games they are.
- 37:25Speaker 1: I remember that because that that submission tape was forty
- 37:27Speaker 1: five minutes. It was awesome. And then I watched I
- 37:30Speaker 1: went to opening night where I put the film that
- 37:32Speaker 1: they made three minute movies opening a sorry opening one pm,
- 37:36Speaker 1: and and it was three minute movie. It was fast movie.
- 37:40Speaker 1: So the submission was much longer than the movie. And
- 37:43Speaker 1: it was really funny. The movie was absolutely undistinguishable from
- 37:50Speaker 1: being like a camera falling into a washing machine. Truly
- 37:53Speaker 1: didn't know what's happening. Should have been in your festival.
- 37:55Speaker 1: That makes sense. That came from you. That's why it
- 37:57Speaker 1: talked to me. And I said, this is where I
- 37:59Speaker 1: draw the line. Actually, no, you're too funny.
- 38:01Speaker 5: So this is actually an interesting segue now to talk
- 38:04Speaker 5: about a devil, so segus.
- 38:07Speaker 3: Oh, you said devil so that we could pivot, So
- 38:09Speaker 3: we could pivot.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Okay, let's get away from that.
- 38:11Speaker 5: I'm interested in what you guys are excited about your
- 38:14Speaker 5: new upcoming slatest, like, is there a movie or two
- 38:18Speaker 5: movies that stand out for you that you are so
- 38:20Speaker 5: excited for people to see.
- 38:22Speaker 1: What hear about it.
- 38:23Speaker 3: I'm so excited for this year because I can finally announce,
- 38:26Speaker 3: we put out the we put out the call. The
- 38:30Speaker 3: theme for this year's b Row Festival is Niagara Falls.
- 38:33Speaker 1: So that's a seam Or.
- 38:36Speaker 5: Do all the videos have to be Niagara Phone.
- 38:39Speaker 3: Well, that's open to interpretation, right, because of course I
- 38:42Speaker 3: would love for literal interpretations of the film, which is,
- 38:47Speaker 3: of course footage of Niagara Falls for forty five minutes
- 38:50Speaker 3: that keeps an audience awake and you can't fall asleep
- 38:53Speaker 3: during it. Or what does Niagara Falls mean to you?
- 38:57Speaker 3: If you can convince me that a busy street evokes
- 39:01Speaker 3: Niagara Falls, then by god, I'll put it in my
- 39:04Speaker 3: film festival. You're in, You're in NPC. You're in NPC.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Can ask you a question about your program? Yes, of course,
- 39:10Speaker 1: because this years the theme was Niagara Falls. I noticed
- 39:12Speaker 1: that last year it was Mount Rushmore and the year
- 39:15Speaker 1: before was Saint Louis Arch. Have you considered going on
- 39:18Speaker 1: a road trip.
- 39:19Speaker 3: No, I'll never leave Phoenix. I attend all of your
- 39:24Speaker 3: film festivals. Virtually I buy the virtual program tickets right right.
- 39:29Speaker 3: I just love what Phoenix has to offer. I really do.
- 39:32Speaker 3: I spent a lot of time in la just sort
- 39:35Speaker 3: of doing the whole thing, doing the whole acting thing.
- 39:38Speaker 3: I studied abroad, but.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Then what I originally study abroad.
- 39:42Speaker 3: I studied abroad in London, and I studied under this
- 39:45Speaker 3: guy who was so He was a guy who was
- 39:48Speaker 3: taking pictures of women in the park, and I thought
- 39:51Speaker 3: what he was doing was so interesting. So I followed
- 39:53Speaker 3: him around for a while and I was videotaping him
- 39:56Speaker 3: taking pictures of women in the park. And then I realized, wait,
- 39:59Speaker 3: it's not the pictures of the women that interest me.
- 40:02Speaker 3: It's the fact that he's at a park and he's
- 40:04Speaker 3: walking around. And that's when I got to say, God, the.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Pictures of the women on two things that interests you,
- 40:12Speaker 1: no conversation.
- 40:15Speaker 3: I'm not interested in women. I'm not interested in men.
- 40:18Speaker 3: What I'm interested in is background shots of people moving around.
- 40:21Speaker 1: I've got to nurs a question for you.
- 40:22Speaker 5: Have you ever heard of this YouTube niche called like
- 40:26Speaker 5: four K footage soundscapes Because I feel like it would
- 40:29Speaker 5: be right up your alley.
- 40:30Speaker 3: No, I don't have a computer that's so interesting to me.
- 40:34Speaker 1: You should. I'll show you after this. I feel like
- 40:37Speaker 1: you're going to love it. It's crazy.
- 40:39Speaker 3: Is it b roll or is it what the kids
- 40:42Speaker 3: called pov?
- 40:43Speaker 1: It's b roll.
- 40:44Speaker 5: It's like it's a high four K footage of you
- 40:47Speaker 5: can type in forests in Japan, you can type in
- 40:49Speaker 5: anywhere ways, and it's the best sound.
- 40:52Speaker 3: You're telling me there's a place where I can go
- 40:54Speaker 3: online and search for my own b roll.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah, And I don't have to wait for.
- 40:59Speaker 3: Bill to send it to me so that I can
- 41:01Speaker 3: discover different locations.
- 41:03Speaker 1: I don't say, Lewis ar this might feel like Pandora's box.
- 41:05Speaker 1: I don't know if we should even open this for you,
- 41:07Speaker 1: because I feel like this in the whole industry that
- 41:09Speaker 1: you've built, you've really tried to build. Yeah, well in
- 41:12Speaker 1: all these three on YouTube and they depend on you,
- 41:14Speaker 1: So I would be nervous about you even knowing about it.
- 41:17Speaker 4: You should call Film Festival's future.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 41:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm going to lose out on the eight thousand
- 41:23Speaker 3: dollars I make every year.
- 41:25Speaker 2: But I also feel like you could just make friends
- 41:27Speaker 2: in a different way.
- 41:28Speaker 4: But we'll open that later.
- 41:30Speaker 3: We're going to close the box because there's only so
- 41:32Speaker 3: much self realization.
- 41:33Speaker 1: I get to today's guess not right. We gotta get
- 41:35Speaker 1: you back in Oh.
- 41:38Speaker 4: I was gonna ask you.
- 41:39Speaker 1: You go first.
- 41:40Speaker 2: I say, Okay, I have a little film. I have
- 41:45Speaker 2: a couple of films. We think, yes, I have.
- 41:51Speaker 4: I have a film.
- 41:52Speaker 1: I love.
- 41:55Speaker 4: It is uh sorry, I'm like okay.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Yes.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Cindy Lapper has a nephew who wrote a film about
- 42:06Speaker 2: about about his triumph triumph, and it is about him
- 42:16Speaker 2: building a car and he builds a car with his
- 42:21Speaker 2: bare hands, and he's Cindy Lapper's son, and c and
- 42:26Speaker 2: Cindy Lappers. Cindy Lapper is gonna help me in the
- 42:29Speaker 2: fight to win the tons of birds back.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Wow, that sounds magnanimous. I think I saw those films.
- 42:36Speaker 5: This is where Cindy Lapper's nephew plays Cindy Lapper's son.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Yes, but Cindy Lappers not involved in the film, but
- 42:42Speaker 2: it's her nephew and she's gonna help me get the
- 42:44Speaker 2: birds back. And the film is beautiful. And the film
- 42:48Speaker 2: also has a song by Florence in the Machine. It's
- 42:53Speaker 2: a beautiful song. We have it in We have it
- 42:56Speaker 2: in Sundance. And then there's another little film that's gorgeous
- 43:00Speaker 2: from Australia and it's about the making of street signs.
- 43:04Speaker 4: It's the woman who made the stop sign that's awesome.
- 43:08Speaker 1: I heard she was amazing. I heard she was not
- 43:11Speaker 1: very fun at potties, but I heard she was incredible.
- 43:15Speaker 3: As heard they're getting geto conversations with her. Was the
- 43:18Speaker 3: worst thing to happen to you.
- 43:20Speaker 2: I was a lot time no, but she's that's I'm
- 43:25Speaker 2: so excited to finally accept her film because she's been
- 43:27Speaker 2: she's been trying to submit this film or her films
- 43:32Speaker 2: into She's been writing films and short films for fourteen years.
- 43:37Speaker 4: So just keep going.
- 43:38Speaker 1: What a story. That's an amazing story about you. Are
- 43:42Speaker 1: you excited. I'm really excited. There's a group of kids
- 43:45Speaker 1: from Fort Wayne, Indiana who recreated the Goonies. Of course
- 43:49Speaker 1: it's a video game. I don't know something like that.
- 43:58Speaker 1: I'm so excited for that. It's gonna be so fun.
- 44:01Speaker 1: We're premiere in that at eleven thirty am. That's how
- 44:03Speaker 1: good it is. It's gonna be so good. It's gonna
- 44:06Speaker 1: be so fun. I got a bunch of other short films. Uh,
- 44:09Speaker 1: there's some really interesting sci fi. There's some very interesting
- 44:14Speaker 1: movies where twist the aliens think we're weird, and there's
- 44:20Speaker 1: some other really really really good.
- 44:22Speaker 3: It's pretty funny.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Sometimes it is the premise and sometimes it's the twist.
- 44:28Speaker 3: I feel say, I will say it just depends on
- 44:33Speaker 3: how the characters talk about it.
- 44:35Speaker 1: In any given we put them all in a block.
- 44:36Speaker 1: We got a lot of the movies and we just
- 44:38Speaker 1: put them all in. I put it.
- 44:39Speaker 5: It always still feels the exact same. It doesn't matter
- 44:42Speaker 5: which one is.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Bitch. I'll say.
- 44:44Speaker 5: Something I will respect about is how zany and wacky
- 44:48Speaker 5: ows the music of your films are. It's always yeah,
- 44:52Speaker 5: it sounds like someone went to Pond five and typed
- 44:55Speaker 5: in Silly Children and downloaded the first four songs that
- 44:59Speaker 5: came up.
- 45:00Speaker 1: That a lot of the times that is the case.
- 45:01Speaker 1: And if we don't hear that music in the film
- 45:04Speaker 1: that they submit, we actually throw it in before we
- 45:06Speaker 1: screen it.
- 45:07Speaker 6: So we put a lot of really good you're helping
- 45:10Speaker 6: about or a little bit of what wow, absolutely wow wow,
- 45:18Speaker 6: more of.
- 45:19Speaker 3: The cookie comedy music that's like, we.
- 45:23Speaker 1: Love that we've been yeah.
- 45:24Speaker 4: Fun guest judges this year.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we have a lot of great ones. We
- 45:28Speaker 1: got rosetmastered. Jeff Ross, he's gonna be he's gonna be watching.
- 45:33Speaker 4: He'll be there for the eleven.
- 45:36Speaker 1: We got supersize me, Morgan Spurlock.
- 45:39Speaker 3: I can't think of people less equipped to be roasted
- 45:42Speaker 3: by Jeff Ross than young filmmakers.
- 45:44Speaker 1: They're going to be so devastated. It's gonna be awesome.
- 45:47Speaker 1: The boys from Indiana.
- 45:52Speaker 3: By a thread in these talkbacks, they are so fragile.
- 45:55Speaker 3: They're the most fragile people I've ever seen. Class the
- 45:59Speaker 3: people who to yours.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Go ahead, I've got a wonderful slate coming up.
- 46:03Speaker 5: It's the first film I would like to talk about.
- 46:05Speaker 5: Is kind of a study and introspective of water told
- 46:10Speaker 5: through the boat is the eyes of a young poor boy.
- 46:14Speaker 5: So it is the study of how he remembers water
- 46:17Speaker 5: feeling on his skin, but it's also an allegory for
- 46:21Speaker 5: how he needs to feel another man's touch. So it's
- 46:25Speaker 5: also a beautiful film about what you know it means
- 46:29Speaker 5: to be gay, and it's a beautiful film. We have
- 46:31Speaker 5: another film where a snake is a metaphor for sin
- 46:34Speaker 5: and the scene that's pretty well, I don't know, it
- 46:39Speaker 5: doesn't feel like you're watching it, and the scene of homosexuality.
- 46:43Speaker 1: So it's also a study of how he is gay.
- 46:45Speaker 5: And so we have another beautiful film about how wind
- 46:50Speaker 5: can actually be one of the most restorative.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Things for a man. So he's a man who's going
- 46:57Speaker 1: on a journey through the middle of Utah and it
- 47:02Speaker 1: turns out he's very lonely, and it's also a study
- 47:05Speaker 1: of how he needs and as a man around him.
- 47:07Speaker 1: And so it's a story of how you know.
- 47:09Speaker 3: It's made by the same guy.
- 47:10Speaker 1: Yes, it's all. It is a beautiful filmmaker. Because I
- 47:13Speaker 1: was curious. I mean, you you have staunchly said you
- 47:15Speaker 1: are not a queer film festival. We are not a
- 47:19Speaker 1: queer film festival.
- 47:23Speaker 3: That's crazy that.
- 47:27Speaker 1: We allow, we allow, we love it, we are not.
- 47:31Speaker 1: We are not. Only that.
- 47:34Speaker 3: I feel the need to say, NPC is open to
- 47:37Speaker 3: all queer people.
- 47:38Speaker 1: We are too, too, But you're not.
- 47:42Speaker 5: It's just that a lot of the avant garde films,
- 47:45Speaker 5: a lot of them are metaphors for free sinks, freezing, okay,
- 47:49Speaker 5: relationship with dad, suicide, homosexuality, or queenness.
- 47:56Speaker 1: That's it.
- 47:57Speaker 5: Can you sing of another thing as an allegory. We
- 47:59Speaker 5: had an so the awesome queer movie last year.
- 48:01Speaker 1: It was about a fairy princess who was saved by friends,
- 48:05Speaker 1: but she pushed him away and she was actually interested
- 48:09Speaker 1: in another princess. It was awesome.
- 48:12Speaker 3: Were they and the were these Disney ip prince and princesses?
- 48:15Speaker 1: Well they were not technically, but the costumes absolutely were.
- 48:19Speaker 3: They had the yellow dress rebell.
- 48:23Speaker 1: You could tell that the costumes were but it was accessible. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:27Speaker 1: The music also was not.
- 48:29Speaker 5: So why don't we end on a little bit of
- 48:31Speaker 5: advice for the young filmmakers and the old filmmakers trying
- 48:36Speaker 5: to get in the business and trying to get into
- 48:39Speaker 5: your festival.
- 48:40Speaker 1: What is the advice?
- 48:42Speaker 3: Of course, I would say to young b roll filmmakers
- 48:45Speaker 3: out there, try to use a camera that is not
- 48:49Speaker 3: so conspicuous when you're setting up on a busy boulevard,
- 48:52Speaker 3: because when people look into the eyes of the camera,
- 48:55Speaker 3: when they look down the barrel of the lens, it
- 48:57Speaker 3: is disqualifying because then we are focusing on a subject.
- 49:00Speaker 1: So you got the rule.
- 49:07Speaker 3: It's a lot of rules, and you gotta read all
- 49:13Speaker 3: of them before you submit because otherwise, don't waste your time. Honey,
- 49:16Speaker 3: you're not getting into NPC. Only eight people get into
- 49:20Speaker 3: NPC every year and only eight people attend. So and
- 49:25Speaker 3: my other advice is just be yourself. Come to Phoenix.
- 49:28Speaker 5: My advice was the young filmmaker, if you if, if
- 49:33Speaker 5: you write it, it should come to life.
- 49:37Speaker 1: So just write it. So just write it starts there.
- 49:44Speaker 3: Why are you bawling up your fist like that.
- 49:46Speaker 1: I'm sick of them. I'm sick of them. I'm sick
- 49:50Speaker 1: of the people who don't write.
- 49:52Speaker 5: If you gotta write it first, and if you don't
- 49:56Speaker 5: need to write, just film.
- 49:58Speaker 1: Just film. My advice would be full of the fun.
- 50:05Speaker 1: Always do what's fun. Enjoy yourself and make sure if
- 50:09Speaker 1: you come to the blast Fest, drink some water and
- 50:13Speaker 1: be a good hang and don't fucking boguard any joints,
- 50:17Speaker 1: and don't don't bother any people you're trying it. Blend
- 50:21Speaker 1: in if you want to make connections, just be kind.
- 50:24Speaker 1: Share your matt on the Big Slide. I love the
- 50:29Speaker 1: Big Slide.
- 50:30Speaker 5: The twistings I always love is a Big Slide. And
- 50:32Speaker 5: I cannot believe you have an ice machine this year.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Yes, you gotta come check out the ice machine. You
- 50:37Speaker 1: have to see it. I honestly, come to Brooklyn. Come
