- 2:12show a little bit later on, Senator Joe Manchin is going to be here.
- 2:15It's opening day for the Red So you know, I've had to carve
- 2:17out a little bit of time to talk about that. Senator Eric tar is
- 2:21going to be stopping Byplus we're gonna get an update on some things going on
- 2:23at West Virginia State University. But before we get into all that, I'm
- 2:28sure by now you have seen the video and heard us talking about read the
- 2:32stories online about the incident yesterday at the canaw Trost Newmaine Association. Angie.
- 2:38Angie Gillenwater is with us right now to talk about exactly what happened up there.
- 2:42Angie, good morning and welcome to the show. Sorry you had to
- 2:45be there on these circumstances though, Oh good morning. Yeah, it was
- 2:50quite a day yesterday. Indeed, it was the U haul basically just crashed
- 2:57into the sheltered building yesterday. Now I understand that you were on site several
- 3:01other staff members were, but you were not open to the public at that
- 3:05time, is that right, correct? So we opened to the public at
- 3:07noon. The crash happened right around eleven AM, so our staff were still
- 3:14cleaning and preparing to open to the public, and all of a sudden,
- 3:17every like everyone that was in the building reported here in like a loud boom,
- 3:22almost like thunder. But it was a beautiful day yesterday, and everyone
- 3:25was like, huh, what was that? And then when we started to
- 3:29see the damage is when we all like kind of jumped into panic mode,
- 3:31right, yeah, And it was a pretty horrific scene that there was a
- 3:35U haul that crashed of the building. And I know you're not playing detective
- 3:38here. We'll let the experts take care of that. I understand Charleston Police's
- 3:42lost an investigation into it, but basically what we hear is is that the
- 3:45driver's reporting that his accelerator stuck and he ran the U haul into the building.
- 3:51And if you've ever been up there, as many of our listeners probably
- 3:53had, it's not very conducive to you haul driving to begin with up there,
- 3:58and you've had a fair assessment, yeah, I would say that's pretty
- 4:00fair, especially to even cross the bridge to get to the shelter's parking lot
- 4:04is a it's a very very very narrow bridge, so kind of kind of
- 4:11crazy he even made it across the bridge to get to the parking lot.
- 4:14I mean, do we have that? What was I mean, you don't
- 4:15have to get into it if you don't want to, because we don't want
- 4:17to, you know, jeopardize an investigation. But was it like a potential
- 4:21person there to drop something off or to pick up a animal or do we
- 4:26know? So he was actually there to pick up his animal. We had
- 4:30had his animal on just like a regular straight hold, and he was there
- 4:35to actually come and get him. And okay, okay, so we understand
- 4:41that there was one injury to a dog, but the dog's going to be
- 4:45okay? Is that right? Yes? Correct? The the crash site,
- 4:50a couple of cinder blocks had fallen. Uh. We have pictures on our
- 4:54Facebook where you can see where the cinder blocks had fallen into a couple of
- 4:59the kennels. And what had happened with that dog. Best we can figure
- 5:02is a cinder block fell on her, but luckily she was a great Pyrenees
- 5:06and is walking away with just a slight limp, and I know the community
- 5:11really rallied around because you went on social media said hey, we need fosters.
- 5:15How many dogs did you have to get fostered? So we were sending
- 5:19every single thing we had on the building just to just to keep everyone at
- 5:25the safety of all the animals and are in everyone's best interest. So we
- 5:30sent animals that were on like curl seahold, animals that were on stray hold,
- 5:34animals that were on medical hold, as long as the fosters felt comfortable
- 5:38knowing that info. And yesterday we sent one hundred and forty six animals out
- 5:43the foster one and forty six. I keep saying dogs, but I forget
- 5:46there are other animals up there too. What do you need and she from
- 5:50the public at this time, so we still need all of our regular supplies.
- 5:56We are supplying everything for fosters if they you know, if they need
- 6:00the items, so food bowls, blankets, towels, and then something we
- 6:05went through yesterday that we were not prepared for. We went through an insane
- 6:11amount of clip leashes and slip leashes. So if you are able to donate
- 6:16either of those, that would be great as well, because our building is
- 6:19almost completely out of leashes. What it would be the best way for people
- 6:23to donate. I know that you've been doing a great job as a set
- 6:26on your social media and your Facebook page. What's the best way for people
- 6:29to actually make the donations, Angie? So if you're wanting to donate actual
- 6:33physical items, you can still come up to the shelter and draw off those
- 6:39donations. We're just going to try to limit everyone's time in the building as
- 6:42much as possible, just to keep everyone safe. The building is temporarily stable
- 6:47at this time, so we you know, the fire department and us,
- 6:51we all feel comfortable having people sought by to draw off donations. We would
- 6:56greatly appreciate it. If you aren't able to get up to the sheltered'l
- 7:00so comfortable coming up to the shelter. You can make a monetary donation on
- 7:03our Facebook or Instagram page. All right, Angie, I know it's trying
- 7:10times for you folks up there, but I wanted to try to give an
- 7:14update for our listeners this morning. I appreciate you being here, and I'll
- 7:17have Hannah on tomorrow. Hopefully we'll be able to try to get back to
- 7:20something something a bit of normalcy to try to get our weekly pet adopted tomorrow.
- 7:26Angie, I appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot problem Thanks for
- 7:29having me. Angie gilling Water again, the community Engagement director for the Canal

- 7:57don't know can hurt you. Want to bring in now, Rene La,
- 8:00who is with West Virginia State University, the executive director of Career Services.
- 8:03That get your title right, Renine, you did. Good morning, Thanks
- 8:07for having me, Thank you for being here. I heard about a program
- 8:09on our stations actually last week that you guys are doing called the Yellow Jacket
- 8:13Career Closet. Talk about that program. Yes, we're super excited. Through
- 8:18a partnership with Diversified Energy, they gave us funds to do with the startup
- 8:22construct that space into what is now the Yellowjacket Career Closet. So it is
- 8:28for current West Virginia State University students. They do have to be enrolled,
- 8:33but it's going to allow them to be able to come in and receive professional
- 8:37clothing for an upcoming interview, first day on the job, the etiquette dinner,
- 8:43or any other professional networking event. And the students will have the ability
- 8:48to acquire professional clothing at no cost to them and they keep them. So
- 8:54the clothing, once the student takes it, it's theirs. So we're looking
- 8:58at people got some things that they would like to get rid of. We
- 9:00wanted to be good quality though. Yeah, maybe you're like me and you
- 9:03just outgrow them. How's that. Yes, we are asking anyone that is
- 9:07willing to donate that they be freshly cleaned and in good condition. But we
- 9:13are also looking for just business professional clothing, so dress pants, dress shirts,
- 9:18suits, dress shoes, ties, handbags, briefcases, things like that.
- 9:24But yes, please good condition only. Okay, well, that's completely
- 9:30understandable. Kind of what dates are we looking at on this? What's your
- 9:33timeframe on this? So we're going to be continuing to accept donations throughout the
- 9:37summer months and then moving forward we will do a specific targeted drives. But
- 9:43right now we are looking for both women's and men's professional clothing and all sizes.
- 9:48I will say that we have specific needs right now for men's dress pants
- 9:54and women's larger sizes. Right now we don't have a whole large We don't
- 9:58have a lot of variety in women's plus sizes, so you would like to
- 10:01carry a variety of sizes for both men and women. So we will accept
- 10:07all donations, but that's specifically what we are in need of at this time.
- 10:11Okay, and where can people what's the best way to do the donation?
- 10:15Just take them to the campus or to contact you? What do you
- 10:16need people to do so either, So if you would like to drop off
- 10:20in person, you can drop off at the Office of Career Services which is
- 10:24located in Wallace Hall, room one oh eight. If you would like for
- 10:28us to make arrangements to pick up, you can contact our office at three
- 10:31oh four seven six six thirty two fifty or you can email Careers at Wvstate
- 10:39dot edu and we are happy to make arrangements to pick up or if you're
- 10:45willing to drop them off, you can do so. I think it's an
- 10:48awesome program. I mean, I really really do, because these young minds
- 10:50that you've got, and sometimes not not even young minds, you're just minds
- 10:54that you're trying to mold up there and you've you've got to be able to
- 10:58get them, you know, dressed for success, as they say. And
- 11:03I think it's a great program. While we're talking about careers, we're talking
- 11:05with the Renee Lester of West Virginia State University. You've got a career and
- 11:09employment expo going on on Monday. Talk about it. So it's actually next
- 11:13Thursday. Not my fault, I'm sorry. Ten to two. It's open
- 11:18to all West Virginia State University students, recent graduates, and the general public.
- 11:22We currently have fifty four vendors registered and it's a wide variety of industries,
- 11:28so we encourage all students in the general public to attend that. Whether
- 11:35you're looking for part time, full time internship opportunities, it's a good way
- 11:39to network and just meet with different organizations. Let's reach out to the talk
- 11:45about employers right now, I mean, can employers still sign up for this?
- 11:48Right now? We have a wait list Mexica pasity. That's a good
- 11:52problem to have. If an employer would like to get on the wait list,
- 11:56they can contact our office and we would put them on a wait list.
- 11:58That way, if someone is not able to attend, we can reach
- 12:01out to them. And I think that this is really really great because you're
- 12:05not only going to have, as you mentioned, not only perspective employers,
- 12:07but you're also going to have folks like at other universities that offer graduate type
- 12:11programs. So it's think of it as a future fair I guess right,
- 12:16because it's not just employers, it's not We have West Virginia State University graduate
- 12:22programs and then surrounding universities Concord Marshal that are going to be promoting graduate programs.
- 12:28So any student that's wanting to continue their education is also encouraged to stop
- 12:33buy and get information about graduate programs would be at our university or a surrounding
- 12:39university. Have a lot of good stuff going on out there at West Virginia
- 12:41State University. I mean, it amazes me the different things that you have
- 12:45going on out there. I think it's a testament to the staff of West
- 12:48Virginia State, mister Cage and everybody that just do a fantastic job out there.
- 12:50Rene Lester, the Westernginia State University, Executive Director of Career Services.
- 12:56Again, the fair is Monday, Thursday. I even oad it right here,

- 17:00the Cincinnati Reds. They're still in contention at this point for the World Series
- 17:04and for the playoffs. Mister Tarr, you're aware of that, right you
- 17:07know? Actually I was not aware of that. They're still there. I've
- 17:08just came out of hibernation underneath that the Gold Dome over there. They are
- 17:11undefeated. The Reds are undefeated at this point. This is our year,
- 17:15man, It's a big deal. Cider Ary, Taris and financi chairs here.
- 17:18You've got some important business that you've got to talk about. The outside
- 17:22politics. I do. I have to say happy birthday to my mom Brenda
- 17:25out there. I know she's listening right now. So she's got a big
- 17:27birthday tomorrow and family's all celebrating that. So happy birthday, My happy birthday,
- 17:32Mama Tar. That should be a country song that sounds like it's like
- 17:36Merle Haggard. Mama tried, you know, but Mama Tar, you know,
- 17:38we got a we got a family. I people plays bluegrass. I'm
- 17:41sure we can make there. You go, do you do? You play
- 17:42yourself? I try to go along when they're doing. I can harmonize with
- 17:47them, but I just can't keep up the fair I just can't see you.
- 17:49Eric could be all, with all due respect, I just can't see
- 17:52you. Maybe you could like play the jug or something like that. Because
- 17:55all my family are musicians except for me, I'm the only one the entire
- 17:57family that does some players well you know, well that's with me. I
- 18:00try. I'm with people and I can sing just low enough that they out,
- 18:04yeah, I do my voice and have fun with it. As an
- 18:07old bluegrass picker from Logan Counties to say, he sings in the key of
- 18:10L, and then he would say, well it sounds like L. Yeah,
- 18:12just say it fast, Just say it fast. So we were a
- 18:17couple of weeks with the session behind us. Right now, give me an
- 18:18overall view of this session. You know, it is a very different session
- 18:22than what we typically have, just because you know, friends and enemies alike.
- 18:26I pretty much conceded that almost every election in West Virginia has won in
- 18:30the Republican primary, and you know, in years past, I think this.
- 18:33I have a little frustration with this session. I've been telling people that
- 18:36this is the most stressful session I've ever served in my time up here,
- 18:38and that when we came in as Republican majority in twenty fifteen and had eighteen
- 18:44members majority in the Senate, you know, everybody, we were busting down
- 18:48walls, and the Republicans thought, you know, we've got two years and
- 18:51Democrats probably getting this back, so we're going to make all the changes we
- 18:53possibly can and just win on a full steam charge. Well it's changed a
- 18:57bit now, you know. So now it's it's kind of a given that
- 19:02most of the races are one in Republican primary, and that's conceded by you
- 19:07know, the people that the Republicans typically are juxtaposed to, which is your
- 19:10personal injury lawyers, it's the teachers' unions, it's labor unions, and those
- 19:14groups are the ones that all fund races against Republicans. And so now that
- 19:19everybody including them, have conceded that's where the races are won. They're trying
- 19:22to jump into Republican races and you have these big, mega majorities, and
- 19:26suddenly they're playing it safe in this primary election. So the first time I've
- 19:29ever seen Republicans play it safe during a session because of elections. And so
- 19:33for me, that's frustrating because I'm a guy who tends to, you know,
- 19:36just what's what's the policy do, and that's what we're gonna do,
- 19:38what's the best with policy, and so fighting that political that political push with
- 19:45a logical mind is difficult for me. So it created a lot of stress
- 19:48in the session. But overall, there were some big wins in this session,
- 19:52especially around the opioid stuff this which was kind of a we knew we
- 19:56were going to focus on some of the drug addiction stuff in this session and
- 20:00things that that circle around that, like human trafficking, some of the enablement
- 20:03things that happened to that facilitates the trafficking of drugs and humans in West Virginia,
- 20:10and we had some pretty powerful legislation around at this session. So I'm
- 20:11proud of that. If you had to give it a senator an overall grade,
- 20:15an overall grade, oh man, we probably had a C plus to
- 20:22B minus, I would say, is what the overall grade is? I
- 20:25think that we probably spent a little bit more than I would like this session.
- 20:29What's interesting about that C minus grade is I've talked to people on both
- 20:33sides of the eye. Head on Fred Albert from AFT, I think that's
- 20:36the grade he gave it. I think so on different sides of the eye.
- 20:38Everybody seems to say it was a C minus. Yeah, we might
- 20:41have heard D. It's what That's what I've mainly got. I don't think
- 20:44I go down to D. I think we had given what the governor started
- 20:48with the state of State address, it could have been a whole lot worse.
- 20:52You know. One of the things we got right now is you know,
- 20:55for decades, if you're if I'm over fifty years old, if you're
- 20:56fifty years old, you can remember when West Virginia you weren't sure if you're
- 21:00a public employee, you're going to get your paycheck cashed. You know.
- 21:03So there were times and that. So for years and years and years and
- 21:06years, question Nias lived paycheck to paycheck to paycheck, and you're you're adjusting
- 21:11what you're eating next week based on what you got left in that paycheck that
- 21:14week. And so for the first time really here in the past couple of
- 21:18years, Western has some money in his pocket. It's because we've had these
- 21:21really fiscally conservative policies and we've we've held the line on spending and those type
- 21:25of things, and we've applied spending to things that bring money back or save
- 21:27money. And so this session, there's a really hard push all the way
- 21:32from day one to the State of State address to spend everything that was in
- 21:34every little pocket. And so it was a challenge to hold that spending control.
- 21:40And so we went a little more than I would like, but overall
- 21:42we could have been It could have been a lot worse. You know,
- 21:45Eric, and you and I have been friends for a number of years,
- 21:48long before I started doing this show. And I can say things to you
- 21:51and you don't get offended by them, and and vice versa, and we
- 21:55have in the past. I consider you to be far right, Okay,
- 21:59that's that's not a bad thing. Okay, necessarily, you know, you
- 22:02wouldn't take offense to that, But there were some in the legislature this year
- 22:07that, quite frankly, in the opinion of a lot of people, went
- 22:10far far right. You probably even scratched your head a couple of times at
- 22:15some of the at some of the things that the far far right went for.
- 22:18Do you have any concerns that maybe the Republican Party in the state may
- 22:22be going too far right? No? No, really, I think when
- 22:26it comes right down to I would consider myself far right, but not a
- 22:30counter conservative, and so and what I think that you may be calling far
- 22:33right are people that I would call counter conservative. In other words, our
- 22:37politics probably line up pretty close, but the method you use to accomplish that
- 22:44policy is extremely different from the way that I would accomplish that policy. I
- 22:48apply pragmatism to the politics. What I would call counter conservatives have no pragmatism,
- 22:55and they get in their own way for the way that they try to
- 22:57legislate. And so there's a lot of that within within the Republican Party,
- 23:00but the party itself is split right down the middle. And it's a frustration
- 23:04to me from a person who would consider themselves far right, and I think
- 23:10the evidence of that happened in with the rushing of Republican State Executive Committee when
- 23:14we went in and had the vote whether to close primaries this year, and
- 23:18that excuse me, that amendment failed by six votes and there was one hundred
- 23:22and twenty people in the room, you know, so when you when you
- 23:25look at and that vote, I think was a measure of where does the
- 23:29party stand, you know, is it where is it the on the spectrum
- 23:33of conservatism, So to me, I think right now, and I think
- 23:37the legislature reflects on a lot of the bills come through is split right down
- 23:40the middle. It's that way in our caucus. I think it's that way
- 23:41in the House to do. And this is not unusual. I mean that
- 23:45the Democrats for eighty three years that they controlled Westernian you probably had similar type
- 23:49issues because you had and I've talked to some folks at Danny Jones being one
- 23:52that served at one point, and several friends of mine that served in the
- 23:56eighties, and they talk about that about how the Democrats had similar issues.
- 24:00Whenever somebody has complete control super majorities, this sort of thing kind of happens.
- 24:07Let's go back to that you were one of the ones that I think
- 24:10really wanted to close the primary. You were very adamant about that. Why
- 24:15do you feel so strongly about that area? It goes off the first statement
- 24:19I made about that everybody realizes that in this election the races are one of
- 24:23the Republican primary. So the trial attorneys realized that, labor unions realized that
- 24:29teachers unions realize that. And in the past, the way that those groups
- 24:33would go in and take a Republican seat, and it's fairly recent pass there
- 24:37has been two Republican seats in the Senate that have been one. This way
- 24:40is they would have people who would traditionally that were in that independent group that
- 24:42would normally vote in the Democrat primary. They went out and pushed for those
- 24:47people to vote in the Republican primary and put a far left Republican in a
- 24:52seat of a place where a conservative had been sitting. So that was when
- 24:59they thought, you know, maybe we win these seats, maybe we don't.
- 25:02Well, now they know that's the only way they can win these seats.
- 25:04And so what's going to happen is you normally you have about a third
- 25:07of the independence that vote Democrat primary tickets now, and then you have about
- 25:11two thirds ago Republican. So what's going to happen now is all of those
- 25:17are going to be voting in the primary. So you got that that whole
- 25:18one third that now jumps into Republican primaries and pulls the Republican party left.
- 25:23That's going to happen this election. And so if we would have closed those
- 25:27primaries, those people who now are going to choose side, they might have
- 25:32two sides. You know. I met with somebody last night who said,
- 25:34you know what, he's been a Democrat all his life, just changed Republican
- 25:38or actually the Independent not long ago. And so I had breakfast with him
- 25:41mystery morning. He said. He said, Dag gone, eirkis I want
- 25:44to switch my part of Republican now? And uh? And I said,
- 25:48I said, well you got till the next election to do it now.
- 25:51He goes, yeah, he said, it's because you guys changing that in
- 25:52there. And I said, but I said, you just proved my point
- 25:55on what I was saying. You're picking the side, and he's a democratic's
- 25:59life. He's further right than I am, but he's to your points that
- 26:02he's a Mingo County Democrat. You know, so I was gonna say,
- 26:04Eric, there's a lot of this. I'm from Logan Counties and listeners know,
- 26:07and I mean everything was decided in the Democratic primary down there for years,
- 26:12even the most far all of the points that are Republicans, you know,
- 26:17whether it's abortion issues, whether it's you know, you name it,
- 26:19but they were all still a registered Democrat. Do you are you worried though,
- 26:23that some of those people, maybe the older types kind of setting their
- 26:27ways that just I'm going to stay a Democrat because Papaul would turn over in
- 26:30his grave or whatever. I've heard all that before. Are you worried that
- 26:34some of those folks that you may turn off, some of those people that
- 26:38just can't seem to put that R behind their name. I think some of
- 26:41those would be turned off. I don't think it's high lot, and I
- 26:44think you're going to hear a lot of moaning and groaning and griping, but
- 26:47they're gonna switch. And the reason I think that is is because the Democrats
- 26:49are in his country so far left. They are abolishing so many of our
- 26:56freedoms. At big city after big city after big city, you can see
- 26:59it the blue cities and blue states are bleeding people like crazy because people are
- 27:03running from those type policies in this election when you have Trump and Biden,
- 27:10who are going to be in this general election coming up. In this primary,
- 27:12you got so many people who want to run to the ballot in West
- 27:15Virginia and throw that vote for Trump as fast as they can. Not so
- 27:19much just because they're so excited about Trump. It's because they are so fed
- 27:22up with the Liberals, and so when if they're those people, they're switching
- 27:27to Republican to go make that vote. If we had closed them in this
- 27:32primary, and it's going to be revisited in twenty twenty six, I understand,
- 27:37Is that right? Well, no, it's in twenty twenty six.
- 27:37Is closed? It is going to be closed, Okay, But I mean,
- 27:41is that a done deal? Because I have heard rumors that there could
- 27:44be in twenty twenty six there could be some more discussion about it. I
- 27:48know you'll be out there trying to fight that. So yeah. So I
- 27:51mean it's we're always going to have more votes between now and then, So
- 27:52if somebody wants to try to keep them open, and there's an effort made
- 27:56I'm sure we'll be discussing that again, so there's time for those that are
- 28:02opposing closing that primary in twenty twenty six. I think that they'll have time
- 28:04to mount that effort. You know, I don't know where we'll be then,
- 28:07though. Can I read a couple of texts here for you? Sure
- 28:11you're always good about that? Text says I'd give this year this year's legislature
- 28:15at f for failure for families, foster kids, and disabled children and adults
- 28:19by the fanatical far right. No. No, And I think that's a
- 28:22misunderstanding of how we are budgeting now. You know, one of the people
- 28:26in our in the staff and the Senate, who's been around this budgeting process
- 28:30for a while, he said, you know what he said, Eric,
- 28:32He said, we have fundamentally changed how Westergia makes a budget now. And
- 28:37we did, and I'll tell you how we did that is because of what
- 28:40the governor brought us in the state of the state was such a fantasy of
- 28:45spending that we knew that we couldn't go from what traditionally what happens is the
- 28:48governor comes in, presents his budget and we work off that budget to build
- 28:52a budget. Well, what had to happen this time was that that wasn't
- 28:57something we could work off of. So we worked off last budget and we
- 29:00looked at what appropriate spending would be relative to the needs of West Virginia and
- 29:06when we will come back, because now there's several things that are different.
- 29:10One is that we're in surplus situations for a while now. To give an
- 29:15example, and what we used to happen as government come and give revenue estimate,
- 29:18Now is it you hope you got that much money? Well, now
- 29:21what he's given two revenue estimates comes in says we have a revenue estment of
- 29:23five point two two billion, but we also expect some hundred eighty million surplus.
- 29:27What's a six billion dollars total revenue estimate. The thing is that that
- 29:33revenue is declining fast with the tax cuts, and so when we went in
- 29:37and started looking at this, we knew we're going to be back two or
- 29:38three times before next next into the fiscal year, and we continual adjust that
- 29:45budget. When we come back in, we come in for our interim sessions,
- 29:48we can do special sessions over top of that, and we can go
- 29:49in look now much better at an agency spending and find out did they really
- 29:55need that much on the appropriation instead of playing more of your money, instead
- 29:57of pulling more money out of day Allen's pocket and paying for those services.
- 30:02We can now go in and look and say, you know what, they
- 30:03didn't use all the money we gave them here, We're going to transfer that
- 30:07money over here to where we've probably underappropriated a little bit. We couldn't do
- 30:10that before. This is the first time ever we have that opportunity. So
- 30:14the way we budget in West Virginia is fundamentally different now, so there's plenty
- 30:18more opportunity to look at those things. I think that there's we have enough
- 30:22unappropriated funds by the way that we did this that we can go in and
- 30:26have a much more accurate spend relative to win. The spend is needed for
- 30:30those services that we deem appropriate to appropriate money to. And so in the
- 30:34past you had to forecast that out eighteen months. We don't have to do
- 30:37that anymore before we let you go. Last night, the governor opted to
- 30:40veto the controversial immunization bill. Your thoughts on that, you know, I'm
- 30:45disappointed, so I voted for that bill. It really didn't change brick and
- 30:49mortar imanization at all. And I know that a lot of healthcare and I'm
- 30:53a physical therapist, So a lot of my compadres they lost their mind and
- 30:56they saw I was voting yes for this bill. But when it comes right
- 31:00down to it, we've got a lot of people leaving our public school system
- 31:03to go into all the other educational choices we gave when this is one of
- 31:07the reasons, and this is because I mean vaccine, vaccine injury is a
- 31:11real thing. We have forty four other states that that aren't as strict as
- 31:15West Virginia. We have thirty six million people that go through West Virginia a
- 31:18year that come from those other states, and we have one point eight million
- 31:22people here. Herd immunity gets to be a little bit of a myth when
- 31:25that's happened, and we all go out to those other states as well.
- 31:27So when you go in this what this vaccine bill did just said that if
- 31:32you're not in a brick and mortar public school, you're not you're not going
- 31:36to be withheld from education from charter schools if you're a virtual charter school.
- 31:40So you're sitting at home in your house on a computer right now, the
- 31:44law says you have to be vaccinated in ornarticipate in that virtual charter school.
- 31:47There's I mean, why would we withhold education from a child for that?
- 31:49So that's one thing, because so now with theyre going to do, they
- 31:52can't do a virtual charter school. So where they're gonna go, where they're
- 31:55going to go to home health or they're going to go we're gonna have or
- 31:56not home hell excuse me, physical therapy and homeschooling right yeah, you know,
- 32:01but it is probably where they end up going because even in the private
- 32:04schools, the private schools have to require the ammunisation right now. So this
- 32:07would have given the private school the option. Most likely many of them would
- 32:09not have done it because they would have so many people who leave the private
- 32:13school. They probably couldn't operate at that point, you know, because they
- 32:15operate on dues paid or tuition paid. So I think the bill wasn't terribly
- 32:21aggressive. It gave children some options that they don't have now, gave parents
- 32:24some options they don't have now. So I would have liked to seeing them
- 32:27a little more of that choice for those parents. So I'm disappointing the Vedo.

- 35:30welcome to the show. Good morning, Dave. How you doing. I
- 35:35am doing fine, sir. Thank you for being here. Before we get
- 35:37into anything else, we learned last night of the passing of Joe Lieberman.
- 35:42You issued a statement about it last night. Talk about Joe Lieberman. Oh
- 35:45my goodness, Dave. I just was I just got off the film with
- 35:47his beautiful wife Adosa and their family, and I've known him for a long
- 35:51long time. But it was a shock. It was an unexpected shock,
- 35:54and it was to all of us, and we just we were on a
- 35:58zoom that earlier this morning. All the people that work with Joe and all
- 36:02some of our senators were on just just basically discussing a wonderful life and the
- 36:07legacy that he left in the members. He'd love to sell Joe, he
- 36:09was a true bipartisan person. Joe was always looking. He never said no.
- 36:15You asked Joe do something, he said, let me think about that.
- 36:16Maybe we make something work. And that was the pure spirit of democracy
- 36:22and the policies that we're supposed to be looking at that are serious and need
- 36:24serious attention. But if you always say no, and just someone says can
- 36:30you work with me on this? And I said no, I'm not for
- 36:31that, how do you know you haven't even talked to me yet. Joe
- 36:36was the person that showed me exactly how it worked and should work in Washington,
- 36:39and him and John McCain, you know, working across being big buddies.
- 36:44The d's in the R no matter what's your identification, and people now
- 36:47are trying to make decisions based on what's your title. Your title should be
- 36:52an American And I want to fix things. If you're a Democrat, you
- 36:54might have a different idea in a way of fixing it if you're a Republican,
- 36:58But together I guarante you can fix it. So I never had a
- 37:01person that was more of a bipartisan, more of a moderate than Genjeorde Lieberman.
- 37:07He is in my lifetime. He is the one person the guiding light
- 37:10of modern modernization, how you get things done, how to cunch your works
- 37:15together and comes together. And we're going to miss him. Indeed, I
- 37:19want to get to some serious stuff here in a couple of moments. But
- 37:22I have to say this, I have never been more proud of Joe Manchin.
- 37:25And I said this on the air, even though we may differ on
- 37:29some things from time to time, that I was when those rude idiots disrupted
- 37:32your meeting with that in your face, anti cold garbage and you jumped up
- 37:37before an aid got involved, and at the risk was sounded like a total
- 37:40fanboy senator. That was pretty bad ass. I'm not gonna lie Well,
- 37:45let me tell you one thing. It went through me like a nice You
- 37:49know, I understand my role as a public servant. I understand people who
- 37:52protest. I really appreciate the protesters because I can usually talk to a protester
- 37:58who's really just out there screaming and raising one and I said, let me
- 38:00ask you something. If I can just finish my meeting. He'll will you
- 38:04sit down with me and we can discuss our differences and maybe we don't disagree
- 38:07as much as you might think. Nine out of ten I will say,
- 38:09sure, we love that. We just want to meet with you. I
- 38:12said, you've got no problem, you have a meeting. This is not
- 38:14This is called the climate defiance. Their only goal in life is to just
- 38:19absolutely be totally disruptive and uncouth. And they're basically climate terrorists, is what
- 38:24they are. They don't want to find an answer, they don't they don't
- 38:29care about. Then we come to an agreement and are talking about what the
- 38:32what the backs are and that guy I'm setting here and I said, oh
- 38:37here they go okay, And I've heard them before and they've been following me
- 38:40around and they know I was going to speak in different parts of the country.
- 38:43But Dave, when he said the vulgar I'm setting there. My daughter
- 38:46was setting with me. And when he said the vulgarity he did it went.
- 38:50I just lost it. I went, I was going to write for
- 38:52the neck. Yeah, I was going to pan against the wall and to
- 38:54beat to living crap out of it. But then my guy stepped in in
- 38:58front of me, and he says, you can't do it, can't do
- 39:00it. And I said, hey John, he said you can't do it.
- 39:02As soon as he said he can't do it, John turns around and
- 39:05grabs him by the pants and throws his head first at the door. I
- 39:07says, hey John, how come you could do it? He said,
- 39:10that's my job. I can do that. You can't. I said,
- 39:13well, I wanted to. I could give me some pleasure here at the
- 39:15end of the day. Suit in time, I was standing, you're still
- 39:17a West Virginian. So he hit the wrong button. Well, there's no
- 39:23way, I mean, and you I think you. You said it.
- 39:25Well, Senator climate terrorist, that's pretty much what they are. I'm going
- 39:28to talk about some recent stuff recently passed appropriations Mini bus package, as it
- 39:34was called. What can you tell us about that? Oh my god.
- 39:36The bills included Defense, Financial Services, Homeland Security, Labor, Health and
- 39:39Human Services, and State Foreign Operations and programs. Is somebelievable We save the
- 39:45gas does with strengthsed border security, We're going to perform ninety six million to
- 39:51hire twenty two thousand border patrol agents, one hundred and twenty five million order
- 39:54patrol overtime pay seventy five hundred more detention dudgeon seven hundred and twenty million for
- 39:59ice deportation. We have got to secure the border. I'm urging and pleading
- 40:04with the President of the United States call a national emergency. We've given you
- 40:07money now to make sure people cannot get into our country. This catching release
- 40:13has to stop, This parole to border has to stop. We've got around
- 40:15up the people that were let in before we could adjudicate them to find out
- 40:19if faith had a reason or a purpose of being here and get them out
- 40:22of here. That's just that you've got to secure the border. So this
- 40:25was the first movement at blocking drugs at the border. We include language that
- 40:30authored report granting Homeland Security Investigation authority. We didn't have that before. So
- 40:36there's an awful lot of whins here, but fighting, you know, supporting
- 40:39our military. We had five hundred million Department events was directed directly into West
- 40:44Virginia. It doubles what we received last year. We are promoting all of
- 40:49the American energy. I said, for the first time, David, in
- 40:52my lifetime over forty years now, this is the first time that we have
- 40:58been totally energy secured as a nation. We have produced more oil and gas,
- 41:02our coal productions up five percent, and we've invested in clean energy and
- 41:07produced it more there than ever before. The President cannot acknowledge in saying we're
- 41:12doing more oil, more gas, more fossil, cleaner than better than anywhere
- 41:16in the world. He can't even say that. And I keep telling him,
- 41:20you want to know why people aren't believing what you're saying because you won't
- 41:22say it. We did it, you had to sign it. We wrote
- 41:25the bill. I know what was in it. And we've got more investments
- 41:28coming to West Virginia than ever in the history of our country, ever in
- 41:31my time in West Virginia. So we should embrace everything. In West Virginia.
- 41:37We are okay with the transition. We know you're going to need coal,
- 41:39and we can do it and produce it cleaner, We can use it
- 41:43for added value. We have a lot of things we can't and there's a
- 41:45demand for our coal around the world like never before. And we're producing the
- 41:50gas and we're building the pipeline. The MVP pipeline is going to deliver gas
- 41:53to the southeast and down in North Carolina on our military basis, and the
- 41:58people don't have their start down there and paying exorbitant prices. So there's a
- 42:02lot of good things that we've done there in rural West Virginia, you know,
- 42:06and permitting the rural definition, let me just explain to you twenty percent
- 42:10of American population sixty six million of US state but lives in what we call
- 42:15rural America. But when the funding came down, and I noticed this during
- 42:20the COVID, when they start sending money out to help hospitals and help education,
- 42:23rural America, places like West Virginia is getting eight or nine percent because
- 42:29we don't have a mass concentration of population, so they just been dip out
- 42:34a little bit of the time thinking it was in good return. And I
- 42:37said, this is unfair. I said, you know, we're twenty percent.
- 42:38We should hit twenty percent of every dollar going out should be designated that
- 42:43must be used in rural America. And that's where Appalachia is. So we
- 42:45got that done. Improving minor health and safety. We have four and twenty
- 42:50five million for black learning disability, another twenty twenty nine million for special benefits
- 42:55for disabled coal miners, and twelve twelve million for black line clinics, and
- 43:00three hundred and eighty seven million for minors safety and health. So, buddy,
- 43:05we you know there's a lot in there for us that we keep fighting
- 43:09for. Well, let's just tell you in Charleston and Charleston you want to
- 43:14know, fifteen million to established State of the Arts and Neuroscience Institute at CMC,
- 43:17fifteen million for that two point two million renovate facilities in the Rushing Department
- 43:22of Arts and Culture History in Charleston. One point five to expand School of
- 43:25Nursing at Bridge Valley, five hundred ninety five thousand develot to Western National Guard
- 43:30Small Business Center in Charleston. So we're doing all we can, buddy,
- 43:35and we've been working with Shelley, and we work well together. We're the
- 43:37only two senators out of one hundred centators. We are the only two of
- 43:40that both set on appropriations. Well, Senator, I know you got a
- 43:45tye schedule. Before we let you go, I do have one other thing
- 43:47to bring out to you. Sure, sure it's going to be Trump v.
- 43:51Biden two point zero. That's the way it's looking. Any thoughts from
- 43:54you on that one, Well, I think you know I've served with both
- 44:00of them, and I know both men, and I've been as honest as
- 44:02I can. I'm concerned about the democracy we have and I'm concerned about the
- 44:06liberalism that basically Joe Biden has been pulled over to the left. I'm concerned
- 44:10about both, and I've said that I know for the rule of law and
- 44:15the things that we love dearly in how this country we've had a lot of
- 44:17challenges, but we've never challenged the rule of law in the early transfer of
- 44:22power. We've never tried. And Donald Trump will challenge that, and I'm
- 44:25very scared of that. So I have I've said I cannot support a vote
- 44:30for Donald Trump. I'm having a hard time supporting Joe Biden right now.
- 44:34And he is not that Joe Biden. I have known. He's not the
- 44:36centrist Joe Biden you could work with. So I can't even tell you right
- 44:39now. But unless I can pull them back, and I'm like a lot
- 44:43of Americans right now, kind of got between and betwixt that I feel homeless
- 44:46and helpless. Is there z still zero chance you get into it, sir?
- 44:52Yeah, I just you know, I've looked at it every way I
- 44:54can. I'm so flattered. I can't tell I mean the flattery, and
- 44:58just as it's an ally to people even to think that they would think that
- 45:04hid you to be in that position. But I just believe it's going to
- 45:07take a movement to the center. It doesn't matter whether you're D or R.
- 45:10We're going to have to find people that really put they should be at
- 45:14the big A. What you should have is the big A. I'm an
- 45:15American, Okay, you have a D identification. You're an independent I or
- 45:20an R or whatever, libertarian. Anything you want to be is fine,
- 45:22as long as your purpose is to fix the challenges we have before us.
- 45:28And we have challenges. The enemy is not the Republican if you're a Democrat,
- 45:31and the enemy is not the Democrat if you're Republican. I'll tell you
- 45:35where the enemies are in the world, and they're coming after as hard.
- 45:37And we better get our act together. If not you divided, you will
- 45:43fall united. They cannot defeat us. So we've got to bring the country
- 45:46together. So I will say this, if Donald Trump becomes the president,
- 45:51I will do everything I can to help him, support him be the best
- 45:54president he can ever be. I think that's my role as an American if
- 45:58Joe Biden becomes it. But you've got to be able to speak truth to
- 46:00power, David, and people are scared to do that. And I'll tell
- 46:05you I've been in the White House. I've been setting in that Oval office,
- 46:08I've been upstairs, and they try to put the pressure on you to
- 46:10do something that I knew the West Virginia would not support. I knew this
- 46:15is not how we were raised. And I couldn't do it. And when
- 46:19the President sits there by yourself, and here you come from West Virginia,
- 46:22and you think, oh my goodness, I'm in the most powerful office in
- 46:25the world, the most powerful person, with the most powerful economy, the
- 46:30most powerful military, and he's asking me to do something because I've got to
- 46:32do this to help the country. And I know it's not right. And
- 46:37you have to look and saying, well, you deep, you have to
- 46:39dig deep down the inside. And I said, both of them have done
- 46:44this to me. Trump and by they gradual right own said Joe, country
- 46:46needs you. And in my own way, I'd say, and very respectful,
- 46:50I'd hold there on. I said, mister President, the country needs
- 46:53you too, it needs us. All we're all in this together and we
- 46:57can work this out. And that's just the way it is, all right,
- 47:00Senator Joe Manch we got to leave it there. I know you got
- 47:02to go. I appreciate you being here as always, sir. We'll talk
- 47:05again soon. Thanks a lot anytime, Dave, enjoy being with you.
- 47:07You keep doing the great work you're doing, all right, Thank you.

- 50:16from Bridge Valley coming up on the show tomorrow as Casey Sachs Suter, Casey
- 50:21Sacks will be here. Dale Cooper is here. Your live reads are like
- 50:24Dave Letterman's Top ten list. You just throw them behind you as you go
- 50:28through from the home office in Shrewsbury. All right, So it's opening day
- 50:32for the Reds, mister Cooper, Yeah, man. Unfortunately, the Reds
- 50:36have moved around their opening day schedules of late, and so they start later
- 50:38in the day now and I can't put it on CHS for opening Day like
- 50:42did forree years and this is a thirty year in a row now that they
- 50:44start too late in the day. So the game today is going to be
- 50:46over In our sister station, of course, the newly tweaked and reformatted and
- 50:51brightened up hopefully, Charlesto's Sports Radio one of six seven, fourteen ninety.
- 50:54You can catch the Reds on there. The pregame will start today at about
- 50:58three forty is when the pregame will start. First pitch is at four to
- 51:00ten the Reds. Of course, we had on hotline earlier this week.
- 51:04We had the guys from Select Cards and Collectibles, and when talking about collectibles,
- 51:07they said the Reds are super hot right now. A lot of their
- 51:09players are hot, and it's outside of the Reds core. So they're saying
- 51:14that baseball fans in general are asking about the Reds. The Reds are a
- 51:15hot commodity right now. Suffering through some injury problems to start the season.
- 51:20Matt McLean is likely out for the season or the vast majority of it.
- 51:23Novelli Marte probably their top prospect, depending on who you talk to, Between
- 51:28him and Ellie de la Cruz, Marte is drug suspended for eighty games.
- 51:31If the Reds make the postseason, he's out for the postseason as well.
- 51:35That's a big hole in the middle of their lineup or in the middle of
- 51:37their infield that they had to fill. So they've done some backfilling with some
- 51:40free agent signings and things like that. But they still have a lot of
- 51:43depth, a lot of pitching, a lot of young talent including Ella de
- 51:45la Cruz in Carnicio and Strand is still going to be up there of course,
- 51:50and Steer who had such a great season last year. So this is
- 51:52an exciting team. Really looking forward to see what the Reds do. I
- 51:55think it's going to be an exciting season. As I said, at this
- 51:58point, we are undefeated and we're still alive for the playoffs. That's right,
- 52:01So I'm excited. It's going to be weird though not hearing them say
- 52:06up to bat Vodo, I know, so weird. I know, man,
- 52:08I so wish since he is visiting Toronto, but Toronto is not coming
- 52:13to Cincinnati. I really wanted Toronto to visit Cincinnati so we I'd have a
- 52:16chance to go see Vodo, even on another team again. But I mean,
- 52:20he was my favorite player of this team for the longest time. I
- 52:22like him. He's turned into like a social media just just a clown,
- 52:25just the funniest guy. I mean, he's a great follow on social media,
- 52:29thoughtful too, I mean, just a good guy to follow. I'm
- 52:30going to miss Vodo, but things change, and I like this new these
- 52:35new Reds. I think that you got some leadership potential and like the Spencer
- 52:37Steer and and we'll see what happens with Da La Cruz. He could be
- 52:40the Acuna of the Reds if he's able to catch fire. We'll see,
- 52:45all right, and coverage begins what time in Charleston's ESPN radio. It's going
- 52:47to be at three forty this afternoon and then they have a day off and
- 52:51then the next game will be on CHS on Saturday. Nothing like Opening Day
- 52:54in Cincinnati. Will definitely be listening Coop as I as always, I appreciate
- 52:58you being here, man, Thanks a lot. Yeah, fix all right,
- 53:00Dale Cooper again, the Reds. This is our year. This is
- 53:04our year, all right, It is always our year. All right.
