- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:03daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:07from social media, the creator economy and the digital space
- 0:11every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:15the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:20Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone.
- 0:23I'm doing my first keynote speech ever this afternoon,
- 0:27which is why I'm in a blazer. So you guys know when I'm in a
- 0:30blazer it means I have some business shit on.
- 0:34But wish me luck because I am very nervous.
- 0:36I've never done a keynote speech before.
- 0:38It's a 15 minute speech on basically like Gen.
- 0:42Z and virality and why virality is kind of a myth.
- 0:46Now, if you are using virality as your Gen.
- 0:49Z content strategy, then you need to rethink that because
- 0:53virality, it doesn't really exist on such a fragmented
- 0:56Internet. So I'm talking for 15 straight
- 0:58minutes about that. And then I am on an hour long
- 1:01panel about like Gen. Z reaching Gen.
- 1:05Z as a publisher and as a brand. So it's going to be a lot.
- 1:09I'm going to be so tired by the end of the day.
- 1:11I'm not sure if this is going to go up before or after that.
- 1:13It depends on how much practicing I need to do between
- 1:16now and then. But wish me luck.
- 1:19OK, let's get into the stories for today.
- 1:21The first story that I have for you guys is that Emma
- 1:23Chamberlain is making her film debut.
- 1:26In an exclusive to Deadline, it was revealed that Emma
- 1:29Chamberlain is making her film debut in a movie called
- 1:32Forbidden Fruits. IFC Films and AMC Networks
- 1:36horror streamer Shudder have acquired the rights to Forbidden
- 1:39Fruits which was Co written by Meredith Alloway and Lily
- 1:42Houghton. So it's currently set to be
- 1:44released in 2026. Emma will be appearing alongside
- 1:47some other big names including Lily Reinhart, Lola Tong,
- 1:52Victoria Pedretti and Alexandra Ship.
- 1:55We don't know much about the plot so far, but according to
- 1:57reports, it follows a retail worker named Apple who quote
- 2:01runs a witchy fem cult in her basement of the mall store after
- 2:05hours. But soon a new hire challenges
- 2:08their quote performative sisterhood, where Apple and her
- 2:11colleagues are quote forced to face their own poisons or
- 2:15succumb to a bloody fate as per Deadline.
- 2:18That actually sounds really good.
- 2:20There has been a mixed reaction to Emma joining in on the
- 2:23project. For example in our slash acting
- 2:26the subreddit 1 user wrote influencers are taking good
- 2:29acting jobs away from the people who deserve them, wrestlers,
- 2:32reality TV contestants and stand up comedians.
- 2:36But other users said they were happy to see Emma act since
- 2:38quote she isn't another Neppo baby.
- 2:40She seems pretty intelligent and artistically creative so I think
- 2:43she might pleasantly surprise people with this one.
- 2:45I kind of agree with that. I actually saw a really
- 2:49interesting take about OK, I don't is it Patrick
- 2:53Schwarzenegger, whoever Arnold Schwarzenegger's son is that is
- 2:56in White Lotus. So he posted, I haven't seen
- 2:58White Lotus yet, but he posted the reaction to him getting
- 3:02white Lotus and it looked like he was sitting at like a resort
- 3:05in, I don't know, the South of France or like Italy or
- 3:08something. And he posted his reaction to
- 3:11TikTok. And then I saw this really
- 3:12interesting take where somebody's like, if I was a
- 3:15working actor and I had to constantly see these nappo
- 3:17babies getting job after job and then posting something like
- 3:21this. Like, he was crying.
- 3:22He was freaking out. And it's like, yeah, like, OK, I
- 3:25understand it's a big deal. But also like, did you not kind
- 3:28of expect that this is the way that your career was going to go
- 3:31when you are the son of literal Arnold Schwarzenegger?
- 3:34And they're like, if I just see videos like this, I would just
- 3:38quit. Like, I would just be done.
- 3:40Obviously, Emma is not an Eppo baby, but she does have a big
- 3:42leg up trying to get into entertainment.
- 3:44But I also think at the end of the day, like, she's been doing
- 3:47this since she was a teenager. It's time to move on.
- 3:49And she can't very well go get like a regular job.
- 3:51Like, she's one of the most famous influencers in the world.
- 3:54So she's just trying different things and expressing herself
- 3:57and just figuring out what kind of fits.
- 3:59And yeah, I'm actually really excited for this movie.
- 4:01It sounds so good. All right, the next story that I
- 4:03have for you guys is that Billboard is enforcing new rules
- 4:07on digital variants. Billboard has changed the rules
- 4:10around artists releasing different digital albums to
- 4:13boost sales. So this is obviously something
- 4:15we saw a lot last year, particularly with artists like
- 4:18Taylor Swift. So the Torture Poets department
- 4:21reportedly had 18 digital versions.
- 4:25That was actually my top like listen of the whole year.
- 4:28I love that album but that is actually insane.
- 4:32That is so it feels like unethical, like it feels like
- 4:35icky. For context, many artists
- 4:37release digital versions of an album with like one bonus track
- 4:40in order to get people to stream or download it.
- 4:42So there are a couple of rules that will now be restricting
- 4:45digital variants of an album. Artists will only be allowed to
- 4:48release 4 digital D to C exclusive versions through the
- 4:52life of an album, also including deluxe version Pop Sam Cam, a
- 4:57commentary creator predominantly focusing on music, speculated
- 5:00that artists will probably be able to release more, it just
- 5:03wouldn't be counted on the charts.
- 5:05So if this is the case, it is unlikely that artists would
- 5:08continue to release them because the point of them releasing
- 5:10these digital variants is to continually chart above everyone
- 5:14else. So digital D2C exclusive
- 5:16versions cannot be put up for sale during the middle of the
- 5:19first week. This is obviously to boost
- 5:21sales. Now they will either need to be
- 5:23available for pre-order or held for a later week of release.
- 5:27Lastly, the minimum price for all digital albums has been
- 5:30raised to 799. Previously artists were making
- 5:34the price very low so that fans would be willing to pay and then
- 5:37boost sales that way to get on the charts.
- 5:39I like this. I like the regulation.
- 5:41You know, that was a huge topic of conversation last year was
- 5:45these artists that could like had the means to constantly
- 5:49release these new variants and how they were just monopolizing
- 5:52the tops of the charts. So yeah, I actually think this
- 5:54is a great initiative if they can execute it.
- 5:57Well, we'll see. OK.
- 5:58And the last right that I have for you guys is there has been a
- 6:02bit of a scandal around Shay Mitchell's brand Base and the
- 6:05pop up that they just did. So Base is a brand founded by
- 6:08Shay Mitchell that predominantly sells bags and luggage.
- 6:12They recently did a pop up in LA that started to go viral on
- 6:14TikTok for all the wrong reasons.
- 6:17Basically, the pop up was a human sized claw machine where
- 6:20people were strapped in and could grab all types of items
- 6:23from this pit that included luggage and suitcases.
- 6:27However, it seems that the event did not have enough inventory
- 6:30for the amount of people who ended up coming along to the
- 6:32event, and that left many attendees feeling essentially
- 6:35burned by the brand. One video from a TikTok user
- 6:38named Emmy showed her being strapped up to the claw machine
- 6:42and waiting to be lifted. However, just as she was about
- 6:44to grab her items, a worker went into the pit and took out a
- 6:47suitcase. And then she went on to caption
- 6:49the video. The luggage got taken out as I
- 6:51was already lifted. The video has since amassed over
- 6:5420 million views. Emmy made a follow up video and
- 6:57she said the whole time she was in line, she didn't see any
- 7:00employees take out items from the pit.
- 7:01And she was confused why that was the case.
- 7:04And it was allegedly passed on to an influencer.
- 7:07And then another situation was this one creator at Grippy Sock
- 7:10Lifestyle said that there was just, I mean, the way she
- 7:13described it just sounded like there was a bit of like chaos
- 7:15and confusion around, like the logistics of the event.
- 7:18She thought she was the last in line.
- 7:20So she'd be for sure getting a bag.
- 7:22And then it turns out that like essentially wasn't the case.
- 7:25Shay Mitchell showed up later and was like congratulating
- 7:28people behind her in line for being like the last in line and
- 7:32gave them some big pieces of luggage and grippy sock
- 7:36lifestyle was upset because she was like actually supposed to be
- 7:41the last in line and actually supposed to get like that big
- 7:43luggage. So anyways, base apparently has
- 7:47been willing to own their mistakes.
- 7:49They have been responding to people really quickly.
- 7:52I mean, I think in general, like public pop up for a brand that
- 7:56is an influencer first brand where fans might be able to meet
- 7:59Shane Mitchell and stuff. Like it's going to have, I think
- 8:02logistical issues. And coming from somebody who
- 8:05goes to so many brand events, or at least I used to before I
- 8:09really had to lean into my founder era these past 18
- 8:12months, I used to go to brand events multiple times a week and
- 8:16stuff is constantly going wrong. And I think that is
- 8:19unfortunately just the case when you're going to an event that is
- 8:22like fully for free. But yes, I mean, this is just
- 8:25like a very minor thing. I'm like actually really
- 8:27surprised that they were allowed to have this like claw clip
- 8:30thing. When I first saw all the base
- 8:32pop up scandal stuff and I didn't realize what happened yet
- 8:34or like what people were saying and I saw the claw clip or like
- 8:38whatever it's called. And I was like, Oh no, what has
- 8:42happened here? So having logistical issues
- 8:45where people aren't leaving with the bags that they wanted, it's
- 8:50kind of, it's definitely not what I thought that this whole
- 8:53situation was going to be why people were talking about it.
- 8:55It kind of reminds me of when Tik Toker started going to
- 8:59Coachella and then they were exposing how like logistically a
- 9:02nightmare it is when you are actually like an influencer
- 9:05attending Coachella. It kind of reminds me of this.
- 9:07It's like users going behind the scenes to like a brand event
- 9:10that typically is reserved for like media and influencers and
- 9:15getting a bit of a behind the scenes of what it's like to go
- 9:18to these events. Because like there's always
- 9:19stuff that goes wrong. There's always going to be
- 9:21influencers or media there who are more like quote UN quote
- 9:24important than you that get the better stuff.
- 9:26Like that's very common. But I also can understand how
- 9:30like if you're a customer and you actually are a base fan,
- 9:33you've purchased this brand, you've attended this pop up, and
- 9:35then an influencer gets the bag that you are.
- 9:37You're literally hanging in the air going for it and a staff
- 9:40member snatches it away from you to give to an influencer.
- 9:44They could just give that influencer that bag like later
- 9:47on, surely they can find her Instagram or get her e-mail and
- 9:50just send her a PR bag. Anyways, I think it's really
- 9:54hard to throw events like this and do like community and
- 9:58influencer events like together. But I also think like there
- 10:02should just be more events for community.
- 10:05Like I do think that's the future of activations is like
- 10:09fewer media and influencers and more focus on your actual
- 10:13customers. However, maybe you could have
- 10:16both. You know, it's probably
- 10:18unrealistic for a lot of brands with like event budgets and
- 10:20stuff. But if you could afford it,
- 10:21maybe do like a smaller event for like media influencers and
- 10:24then do a separate one for consumers.
- 10:26I feel like I've seen some brands doing that lately too.
- 10:29All right guys, well that's it for mini scroll today.
- 10:31I have to go practice for like 5 straight hours until I have to
- 10:35go do this big speech. So fingers crossed all goes well
- 10:38manifest for me. I love you guys.
- 10:40There will be a deep dive tomorrow and then I will talk to
- 10:43you on Monday. Bye.
