Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Album came out yesterday, Always Eating Shit Like it's.
- 0:05Speaker 2: A very very morbid kind of title. Where did it
- 0:10Speaker 2: come from?
- 0:12Speaker 3: It's as take it just like our term of eating
- 0:16Speaker 3: ship is just like you know, driving six hours to
- 0:21Speaker 3: play a show and there's five people there, you know
- 0:23Speaker 3: what I mean.
- 0:24Speaker 2: He got Keno going in the background. We will have
- 0:25Speaker 2: been there, you know what I mean.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Like it's just the grind, the pursuit, the fuck it
- 0:31Speaker 3: ever ending ship you have to eat so you know,
- 0:34Speaker 3: then play one good sold out show out of twenty,
- 0:37Speaker 3: you know what I mean. It's just yeah, yeah, it's
- 0:40Speaker 3: just about that, and it's about you know, the relentlessness
- 0:42Speaker 3: of it and just you know, not giving up as well.
- 0:44Speaker 3: It's like, yeah, that's it sounds ridiculous, which it is,
- 0:47Speaker 3: but it does have a good meaning behind.
- 0:49Speaker 1: It, you know what I mean for sure, for sure,
- 0:50Speaker 1: and I think anyone in the industry is you know,
- 0:52Speaker 1: doing the hard yards knows that consistency and no one's
- 0:57Speaker 1: doing it for the money.
- 0:58Speaker 2: We're doing for the love of it. And you can.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Keep having fun doing it, you know, it's something if
- 1:03Speaker 1: you And there's the other thing too, is to be
- 1:05Speaker 1: different pathways to making it these days there's not one
- 1:08Speaker 1: set to degree that you must follow, et cetera, et cetera.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I imagine you guys have been doing it for some
- 1:12Speaker 1: time now that you've beat from the old to the
- 1:15Speaker 1: new way of it coming about, and especially now I
- 1:19Speaker 1: find after COVID, like live music locally and like regionally is.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Just it's so much more than what it was before.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I think that's so much more opportunity for artists to
- 1:31Speaker 1: you know, certainly get a cult following underground wherever it
- 1:35Speaker 1: may be.
- 1:35Speaker 2: And yeah, yeah, yeah exactly.
- 1:38Speaker 1: And yeah, so as that how you experience it if
- 1:41Speaker 1: guys have found so were you guys are based in Melbourne? Yeah, yeah, so,
- 1:46Speaker 1: I mean again, Melbourne's got so much to offer when
- 1:51Speaker 1: it comes to music.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, we're so spoiled.
- 1:53Speaker 3: It's we talk about it all the time, and it's like,
- 1:56Speaker 3: you know, travel the world all these other places and
- 1:59Speaker 3: like playing different plays and stuff like that. Be like
- 2:01Speaker 3: I'm always comparing it to Melbourne, and I'm like, oh,
- 2:04Speaker 3: that's a really unfair comparison because it's always going to
- 2:08Speaker 3: be better here, you know what I mean. It's like
- 2:10Speaker 3: I'm not even just biased, like it's just the truth,
- 2:12Speaker 3: you know what.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I mean, like absolutely.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I think between Adelaide as well, they've got such a
- 2:17Speaker 1: strong music scene underground. And I'm from like you know, Brisbane,
- 2:21Speaker 1: like Gold Coast, so even especially in the northern rivers,
- 2:24Speaker 1: like where it's the melting pot of like you know,
- 2:26Speaker 1: talent and like a lot of industries, bagulineeds who made
- 2:29Speaker 1: it you know, come here as well and not for
- 2:31Speaker 1: their you know, settling into the to the fabric of
- 2:35Speaker 1: this community and it seeks out, you know. And I
- 2:38Speaker 1: feel the same, very spoilt and very lucky to have
- 2:41Speaker 1: a lot of opportunities and venues too. I think that's
- 2:44Speaker 1: a big thing is when you've got a venue that's
- 2:46Speaker 1: supportive you guys are you know, it's so much easier
- 2:51Speaker 1: than trying to like fight you a way to get
- 2:52Speaker 1: a gig at a bowl that you know five.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Kind of thing. Yeah exactly. They might be turned off
- 2:58Speaker 2: by the style of music or something like that.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Yeah, which is, yeah, we're so lucky here and like
- 3:02Speaker 3: there's so many, so many great venues in Melbourne. There's
- 3:05Speaker 3: a lot that close, but then more pop up and
- 3:07Speaker 3: there's one duer and the people who own them are
- 3:10Speaker 3: doing it, like you know, like Shane and Leanne who
- 3:12Speaker 3: owned the Toe and the Last Chance Rock and Roll.
- 3:14Speaker 3: But like they just grind every day like they fucking
- 3:18Speaker 3: live and breed that shit. They're not making any fucking money,
- 3:21Speaker 3: you know what I mean. But they're doing it because
- 3:22Speaker 3: they grew up going to these places and they want
- 3:25Speaker 3: to see young men. They want to see young bands succeed.
- 3:28Speaker 3: They want to see these gigs, you know. They they're
- 3:30Speaker 3: behind the bar pool and beers. They're not just owners,
- 3:32Speaker 3: you know what I mean. Like they're working hard.
- 3:35Speaker 2: That's it. That's it.
- 3:36Speaker 1: And that's the thing too, Like when you've been like
- 3:38Speaker 1: come from when we were younger, like I'm in my
- 3:41Speaker 1: mid forties now, but that was you know, the pub bands,
- 3:43Speaker 1: that's where they started and you know some of our
- 3:46Speaker 1: best bands that we have now, that's where they did
- 3:49Speaker 1: their cut their teeth, so to speak. And it's what
- 3:52Speaker 1: do you think in the other day, like you know,
- 3:55Speaker 1: the loss of festivals that we had, you know for
- 3:57Speaker 1: so long, which so many bands were able to get
- 3:59Speaker 1: you know, a kickout and you know get on stage
- 4:02Speaker 1: with you know, the small stage, even the feeling far between.
- 4:06Speaker 1: But I think what that's done is it's pushed that
- 4:09Speaker 1: live gig so now you're doing like a couple of
- 4:12Speaker 1: headliner shows or maybe three or four other bands, and
- 4:16Speaker 1: I think it's probably more focus on, you know, a
- 4:19Speaker 1: band that's on their way up than it is you know,
- 4:22Speaker 1: being on a stage that you lost.
- 4:23Speaker 2: You know, a bill of so many other artists.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And I really think because I'm thinking, you know, like
- 4:28Speaker 1: the Goods were coming up and I'm like, gotta remember,
- 4:31Speaker 1: you know, back in twenty eight whatever, it was my
- 4:33Speaker 1: oldest sort and I've seen them so many times.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I get every festival here and.
- 4:36Speaker 1: There, and it's like it's been like two thousand has
- 4:40Speaker 1: this last time we went to one of the had
- 4:42Speaker 1: one of concerts?
- 4:43Speaker 2: And just how much more focuses.
- 4:46Speaker 1: On someone like say even them now they're stuck in
- 4:49Speaker 1: a festival bill.
- 4:50Speaker 2: I think it's definitely a double edged sword, you know.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I think like the kind of decline and death
- 4:57Speaker 3: of these big Australian festivals like Falls Splendor, Yeah, you know,
- 5:03Speaker 3: I couldn't give a fuck. I'm like, whatever I've played
- 5:05Speaker 3: at him, the fucking just got so corporate and so
- 5:08Speaker 3: sh and it's like, yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 2: It's the same thing.
- 5:10Speaker 3: It's like if all these things aren't happening, then people
- 5:12Speaker 3: are more likely to go out to like real venues
- 5:14Speaker 3: and real gigs, you know what I mean. It's not
- 5:16Speaker 3: just like buying a ticket to a festival to get
- 5:18Speaker 3: fucked up for the weekend.
- 5:19Speaker 2: You know, actually remember it.
- 5:21Speaker 1: You know, you might go next week and if like
- 5:25Speaker 1: a particular venue is doing things like that.
- 5:27Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:28Speaker 1: One thing I love about Brisbane especially is like the
- 5:30Speaker 1: dive bars in the valley, Like that's that's where you
- 5:33Speaker 1: guys are playing now and it's so good to see.
- 5:35Speaker 2: It's awesome.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Yeah and yeah, so I think it's definitely turn a
- 5:40Speaker 1: new page and turn a new leaf for a lot
- 5:42Speaker 1: of people. But it's always interesting to hear people how they,
- 5:45Speaker 1: you know, sit with it, because then you get a
- 5:46Speaker 1: lot of you know Ben too, maybe younger who are
- 5:48Speaker 1: like just doing it on the socials and the platforms,
- 5:50Speaker 1: and it's a totally different way again to getting succession.
- 5:55Speaker 1: But yeah, so how do you guys find you putting
- 5:57Speaker 1: your music out there? You come from the old school
- 5:59Speaker 1: into the new realm. What's it been like for yourself?
- 6:02Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely, I mean, like, of course we have to
- 6:04Speaker 3: use the internet because it's just the way life is now.
- 6:07Speaker 3: But as far as everything else goes, like we record
- 6:10Speaker 3: all our own music, we produce it ourselves, we have
- 6:13Speaker 3: our own record label. We just do everything ourselves, you
- 6:15Speaker 3: know what I mean, Because like that old hard of
- 6:17Speaker 3: fucking getting signed to a label and all that shit,
- 6:20Speaker 3: it's like it's not fucking worth it anymore, you know
- 6:22Speaker 3: what I mean. It's like, what are you going to
- 6:23Speaker 3: get out of it? Yeah, they pay for your pressing
- 6:26Speaker 3: up front.
- 6:26Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I'm not shitting on record labels, but just for a
- 6:29Speaker 3: band at our stage, it's like, we may as well
- 6:31Speaker 3: just pay for it ourselves, make one hundred per cent
- 6:33Speaker 3: money back ourselves, put it back into the band, and
- 6:36Speaker 3: just run it as our own business, you know what
- 6:37Speaker 3: I mean. And a lot of other bands that I
- 6:39Speaker 3: look up to, they do the same thing, you know
- 6:41Speaker 3: what I mean.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's what you say.
- 6:43Speaker 1: The thing with labels like especially now, I mean before
- 6:46Speaker 1: like yeah, the independence, they had a place and you
- 6:48Speaker 1: know when it was done differently. But now unless they've
- 6:50Speaker 1: got you know, you sign on a label, and unless
- 6:52Speaker 1: you're getting signed, the into also management and promotion as well.
- 6:55Speaker 2: As part of whatever that may be. Like you say,
- 6:57Speaker 2: you may be going on theself because it's not.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It's just that just is literally just label and whenever
- 7:03Speaker 1: they pay you, you've got to pay back usually.
- 7:05Speaker 2: It's how those contracts usually.
- 7:07Speaker 3: And it's like they're a company too, Like they want
- 7:09Speaker 3: to make money, they're not doing They're not doing it because.
- 7:12Speaker 2: They like your band. Yeah, they feel like the love
- 7:16Speaker 2: of music.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yeah, because they're like, oh, we could sell this product
- 7:19Speaker 3: and make money. And that's fine. That's how the fucking
- 7:21Speaker 3: industry works. It's fucking capitalism. But yeah, you know, if
- 7:25Speaker 3: you do it yourself, it doesn't have to be capitalism.
- 7:28Speaker 2: That's right, that's right.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And even like right down to the match, Like I've
- 7:31Speaker 1: just come off the back of a couple of shows
- 7:34Speaker 1: with the Gross and Paul Courtesy, he's like everything hands
- 7:37Speaker 1: on himself. He's like at the merch stand doing it all,
- 7:39Speaker 1: putting it all, doing all the DeLine And that's how
- 7:41Speaker 1: these guys are still sustainable now. Yeah, being at the
- 7:45Speaker 1: top pretty much the whole way. And it's I think
- 7:48Speaker 1: there's a lot to be said about being you know,
- 7:51Speaker 1: it's a wholly independent as you can be and still
- 7:54Speaker 1: be able to make the music and have that that
- 7:57Speaker 1: touch and not lose that the side of the bigger
- 8:00Speaker 1: picture because it's you get lost, and it's a lot
- 8:04Speaker 1: of people like they want to eat you off in
- 8:07Speaker 1: contraction for.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, So I see a lot of bands. I
- 8:13Speaker 2: like it.
- 8:13Speaker 3: It's like a bigger trend is happening, more of everybody
- 8:16Speaker 3: doing their own ship, you know what I mean, Like absolutely, yeah,
- 8:19Speaker 3: punk rock and you know, hardcore on metal and whatever.
- 8:22Speaker 2: It's always been very di y, but yeah, it's kind
- 8:25Speaker 2: of the nave even more so now.
- 8:28Speaker 3: But it's not like you know that DIY label like tag,
- 8:32Speaker 3: but it's kind of like it's like we are doing
- 8:34Speaker 3: it ourselves, you know what I mean, because we believe
- 8:36Speaker 3: in it, and yeah, we've got nothing else to do,
- 8:38Speaker 3: so we have to.
- 8:42Speaker 2: That.
- 8:43Speaker 1: We've all got real jobs, you know. None of us
- 8:44Speaker 1: are like full die musicians. It's some I mean, I guess,
- 8:47Speaker 1: you know, there's a few. I've got friends who are
- 8:51Speaker 1: fortunate enough to do it. But I see like it's
- 8:52Speaker 1: a you know, again double edged sword, Like they're working
- 8:56Speaker 1: the books full time, you know, through Thursday through the Sunday,
- 8:58Speaker 1: doing gigs, but it's you know, the same stuff over
- 9:01Speaker 1: and over, and it's it's a hard slot, you know.
- 9:03Speaker 1: But yeah, you can earn a full time wage. Of
- 9:05Speaker 1: the payoff is no time for creativity, You no off time.
- 9:08Speaker 1: And it's some Yeah, it gets it has its has
- 9:12Speaker 1: its own upsid its downs for sure.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Yeah, but come on, what you've got to work for
- 9:17Speaker 3: forty minutes a night playing a gig and then you
- 9:18Speaker 3: get to drink for free.
- 9:19Speaker 1: So it's pretty great there, iss like you get to
- 9:21Speaker 1: what sing and thing for a living and you know,
- 9:24Speaker 1: being beer rock star.
- 9:25Speaker 2: It's yeah, it definitely has its pose for sure.
- 9:28Speaker 1: It's I always say, is the most funny can have
- 9:31Speaker 1: be the close on so for sure.
- 9:36Speaker 2: So you guys are this is your third album? Is
- 9:40Speaker 2: it that you're putting just without third?
- 9:42Speaker 3: Second?
- 9:43Speaker 2: Second?
- 9:43Speaker 1: And you haven't done it for a little while, so
- 9:45Speaker 1: there's been a bit of a gap between the first
- 9:47Speaker 1: and now the second.
- 9:48Speaker 2: What's happened in between there? For you guys?
- 9:52Speaker 3: We kind of like just went on a break for
- 9:54Speaker 3: a couple of years. Yeah, I don't know. We got
- 9:57Speaker 3: into a bit of trouble ourselves with different substances and whatnot.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Fair enough, Yeah, but now we just you know, back
- 10:06Speaker 3: and it feels good and you know, this album just
- 10:08Speaker 3: came naturally. We have our own studio we're all playing
- 10:11Speaker 3: in other projects and doing all kinds of stuff like that. Yeah,
- 10:14Speaker 3: and that happens play with each other and stuff like
- 10:17Speaker 3: in different bands. And yeah, it just came back naturally
- 10:19Speaker 3: and just read the record, made it and we're like,
- 10:22Speaker 3: fuck it, let's just do this full time again.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's always encouraging when that happens organically like that.
- 10:28Speaker 1: There's no for sure, there's no pressure.
- 10:31Speaker 2: So that's nice. That's nice.
- 10:33Speaker 1: And how long did it take between you guys started
- 10:35Speaker 1: to come back and do it until the album came out?
- 10:40Speaker 3: Mmmm, maybe like a year and a half or something
- 10:44Speaker 3: like that.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Okay, so yeah, bit of time obviously. Like you said,
- 10:47Speaker 1: there's no pressure, no deadline. It was just come together
- 10:50Speaker 1: and come up May Yeah.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Yeah, the rock like having our own studio, like because
- 10:56Speaker 3: team ma guitar player is a producer and the mixed
- 10:58Speaker 3: engineer and stuff like that.
- 10:59Speaker 2: So that helps so much, doesn't it?
- 11:01Speaker 3: It does, But also it's a blessing and a curse
- 11:04Speaker 3: because you have unlimited time, so it's like you can't
- 11:06Speaker 3: need to put yourself so true.
- 11:08Speaker 1: You're going to be able to walk away sometimes not
- 11:10Speaker 1: spend all night just going all right, I can make
- 11:12Speaker 1: it better. I make it better, and it's you know,
- 11:14Speaker 1: and the difference that anyone else might notice is so slight,
- 11:17Speaker 1: but you get.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Loss in your own work like that. Sometimes it's yeah,
- 11:20Speaker 2: you're gonna have that division.
- 11:22Speaker 1: So you guys come late together and like do you
- 11:24Speaker 1: play as a band as a whole or do you
- 11:25Speaker 1: do like, you know, each bit individually. Then he mixes
- 11:28Speaker 1: it and masters it and polishes that.
- 11:32Speaker 2: First record, we did it all live in this one.
- 11:34Speaker 3: We're like, we wanted it like a really tight, like yeah,
- 11:38Speaker 3: classic heavy metal sounding records, So we just did it all,
- 11:41Speaker 3: you know, tracked it all to clicks and just obsessed it.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Just produce completely different ways of you know, recording, which
- 11:47Speaker 1: is quite interesting for a musician as well. How it's
- 11:51Speaker 1: all done and come together and yeah, it's I don't
- 11:55Speaker 1: know if there is a better or words. I think,
- 11:56Speaker 1: you know, again, you can take as many takes as
- 11:59Speaker 1: you want, but if just doing it all you sort
- 12:01Speaker 1: of just get it smashed, it out done as it's
- 12:03Speaker 1: a bit.
- 12:03Speaker 2: More raw and or game.
- 12:06Speaker 1: It's yeah, both are good boats definitely have their place. Yeah,
- 12:10Speaker 1: So yeah, what are you guitar and drums?
- 12:13Speaker 2: What do you? I played bass?
- 12:15Speaker 1: By I played bass and singing Caveral letters, so it
- 12:23Speaker 1: was always getting some bass players.
- 12:25Speaker 2: But we are the reason your girlfriend dances like for sure. Yeah.
- 12:32Speaker 1: So so you said you've all been in other projects
- 12:35Speaker 1: before for yourself, well sort of have you been doing
- 12:39Speaker 1: other stuff as well as things.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Going with them?
- 12:42Speaker 1: Pretty cool name by the way, it's got its own
- 12:45Speaker 1: rhythm to it.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, like it's fubably like we're an instrumental band,
- 12:50Speaker 3: but like I play and sing in another band, and
- 12:52Speaker 3: so it's like we've been all sing but we just
- 12:55Speaker 3: choose not to do this.
- 12:56Speaker 2: You know, maybe maybe that's what you need.
- 12:59Speaker 1: It is that can be the next twist, the next
- 13:01Speaker 1: edge to it is get it, get a female out front,
- 13:04Speaker 1: because we just look good. It's lyrics over it makes
- 13:09Speaker 1: it straight up. But I guess it's good. You always
- 13:12Speaker 1: got that, you know, the options open. But instrumentals, yeah
- 13:15Speaker 1: there are. They're going hard, like I've seen a few
- 13:18Speaker 1: do their thing and it's certainly well received. And yeah,
- 13:22Speaker 1: so yeah, you've got obviously a strong following fan base.
- 13:26Speaker 1: How's that going for yourselves? You track that or you
- 13:28Speaker 1: just don't keep thinking of a ship?
- 13:30Speaker 2: No, I love it.
- 13:31Speaker 3: It's the best thing ever, you know what I mean, Like, yeah,
- 13:34Speaker 3: come up to you after the show.
- 13:35Speaker 2: But if it's one person that was incredible, I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 13:37Speaker 2: isn't that so true?
- 13:38Speaker 1: Like one person if they go, oh my god, it's amazing,
- 13:41Speaker 1: my job here is done.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:43Speaker 3: And it's like people who say they don't give a funk.
- 13:45Speaker 3: I'm like, well, you wouldn't play in a band and
- 13:46Speaker 3: stay in your bedroom, you know what I mean, Like, oh,
- 13:49Speaker 3: we don't want to make it. We want to, don't.
- 13:52Speaker 3: You know, we all do having a little like.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Scatter rejection and that and and or just don't have
- 13:59Speaker 1: the commitment of the lazy.
- 14:00Speaker 2: They don't they're don't.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just says that they don't care as a
- 14:04Speaker 3: fucking liar, you know what I mean.
- 14:06Speaker 2: It's like absolutely, you.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Just don't want to get you know, potentially like yeah,
- 14:09Speaker 1: you know, put shit on for it and have a critic,
- 14:11Speaker 1: but you.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Know exactly, you don't have to be a fucking egomaniac.
- 14:15Speaker 1: But you know, you know, you know, and there are
- 14:19Speaker 1: some critics out there that you know, bet are just
- 14:21Speaker 1: trolls and they're like just talk shit no matter what.
- 14:23Speaker 1: But there are some that their feedback it can be
- 14:26Speaker 1: you know, used. I think it's when you put yourself
