- 0:03Speaker 1: Welcome to the third hour of The Morning Show with
- 0:08Speaker 1: Preston Scott. Fast Moving Thursday, and it's January thirtieth already. Thankfully,
- 0:14Speaker 1: I'm no longer counting down the days that we are
- 0:17Speaker 1: held hostage. We are liberated from that, and so we
- 0:21Speaker 1: now move forward and we are joined each month by
- 0:25Speaker 1: doctor Ed Moore and a little more history. Hello, my friend,
- 0:29Speaker 1: how are you?
- 0:29Speaker 2: I'm good, I'm good. But you just said, you know,
- 0:31Speaker 2: we're January the thirtieth. My daughter posted up. I thought
- 0:35Speaker 2: it was hysterical. How many more months are there in January?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Was her comment. It just seem and it does when
- 0:42Speaker 2: you sit and reflect on it. So much has happened
- 0:44Speaker 2: in the month of January this year that it can't
- 0:48Speaker 2: have all been done in just thirty days.
- 0:50Speaker 1: So much has happened in ten days. Oh yeah, I
- 0:53Speaker 1: mean it's crazy. But I joked about the fact that
- 0:57Speaker 1: you got eight pages of notes and will you get
- 0:59Speaker 1: through one? And the fact of the matter is you
- 1:01Speaker 1: have eleven You said thirteen. Actually, that cut very good.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I didn't want to short change you.
- 1:05Speaker 2: There probably eight or nine that we won't even look
- 1:08Speaker 2: at it.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Well. Earlier I talked about the fact that we have
- 1:11Speaker 1: this idea of what we're going to do, and then
- 1:13Speaker 1: you inevitably say yeah, but and this is a yeah
- 1:17Speaker 1: butt segment.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah it is. And it prompted me, as I've said
- 1:21Speaker 2: before on this show, that I start researching something and
- 1:25Speaker 2: then some little tidbit over here attracts my attention, and
- 1:30Speaker 2: so I'm swimming over in this pond for a while,
- 1:32Speaker 2: and then I go deep water and keep going and
- 1:35Speaker 2: I that'd be an interesting topic to talk about.
- 1:37Speaker 1: It, and he drags me along because I'm on the
- 1:39Speaker 1: other side of the leash. Go ahead, there you go.
- 1:42Speaker 2: I thought it'd be interesting to talk about. You know,
- 1:45Speaker 2: President Trump is signing all kinds of executive orders, and
- 1:48Speaker 2: one that he pretty much surprised everybody with was the
- 1:52Speaker 2: renaming of the Gulf of Mexico calling the Gulf of America.
- 1:57Speaker 2: And nobody would have forecasted that being an issue. But
- 2:00Speaker 2: I thought, well, I wonder how it got its name,
- 2:02Speaker 2: and where did all this come from, and how rigid
- 2:05Speaker 2: is it? And where is really the golf? You know
- 2:07Speaker 2: that's me, my squirrel, yep, yep. And the history on
- 2:14Speaker 2: it is really fascinating. I mean, it's obviously it's about
- 2:17Speaker 2: three hundred million years old and it didn't probably have
- 2:21Speaker 2: a name for most of that time, sort of like
- 2:23Speaker 2: my notes. You know, you'll never get to that, but
- 2:26Speaker 2: it uh, you know, you'd call it what you want,
- 2:29Speaker 2: and uh, you know, so he is I mean he.
- 2:32Speaker 1: At least our portion of it?
- 2:34Speaker 2: Well, or how we I mean when you think about
- 2:37Speaker 2: the ramifications of that, if you rename something anything geographically,
- 2:42Speaker 2: you know all the topographers, and you know that this
- 2:45Speaker 2: map company and that map company, and you.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I got my world map back there.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Go relabel it. I mean, all of these kinds of things.
- 2:53Speaker 2: And uh, one of the interesting little tidbits I found
- 2:56Speaker 2: was like Google, if you do a Google search, what
- 3:00Speaker 2: their decision was on that and now technically based on
- 3:03Speaker 2: the Department of an Interior and what goes on in
- 3:05Speaker 2: the US government, it is now the Gulf of America.
- 3:09Speaker 2: They're going to use that. They don't have to have legislation,
- 3:13Speaker 2: No big deal. He's you know, it's the old Obama.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I've got a pen, you know, I can make it happen. Well,
- 3:19Speaker 2: that's true, So it is that So if you Google
- 3:22Speaker 2: search going forward, I don't know if they've made the
- 3:25Speaker 2: technical changes now, depending on where you are. When you
- 3:30Speaker 2: ask the question what is this body of water called?
- 3:34Speaker 2: Or however you phrase the question, it'll give you a
- 3:36Speaker 2: different answer. I mean, if you're sitting in Tallahassee and
- 3:40Speaker 2: you google search it it's.
- 3:41Speaker 1: The Gulf of Florida.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Well, yeah, well it has been called that. I mean,
- 3:46Speaker 2: so you know, it's had a lot of names going
- 3:49Speaker 2: through time, and it's a hit on the history hook
- 3:52Speaker 2: for why I've sitting in this chair going over history.
- 3:56Speaker 2: It's had an amazing number of names, and it's fifteen
- 4:01Speaker 2: early fifteen hundreds. It's been called all kinds of things
- 4:04Speaker 2: depending on who's doing the naming.
- 4:07Speaker 1: When did this trail start? For you? Going back how far?
- 4:12Speaker 2: Talking about the name? Yep, as soon as President Trump
- 4:15Speaker 2: said we're going to call this the go.
- 4:18Speaker 1: But where did you find its first iteration of its name?
- 4:23Speaker 2: Oh? You can go back to basically the Spaniards exploring.
- 4:28Speaker 2: But bureaucracy is involved in everything. I mean, I get
- 4:32Speaker 2: humor out of this. There's actually a federal body in
- 4:36Speaker 2: our government called the Board on Geographic Names, established in
- 4:41Speaker 2: eighteen ninety. Okay, that's how long it's been around. They
- 4:44Speaker 2: probably don't meet very often because there's not now they're scrambling. Hope,
- 4:48Speaker 2: we've got work to do it, but.
- 4:49Speaker 1: We're not discovering anything new anymore. I could get it.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Back then we were moving west, right.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, a lot of new territory, new expansion. But
- 4:58Speaker 2: they actually created a board. You see four guys sitting
- 5:02Speaker 2: around a table going, hey, what are we gonna name this?
- 5:05Speaker 1: I want to be on that boy.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Yeah, well yeah, I don't know. I don't know what
- 5:09Speaker 2: the perks are, just to say you got it, you're
- 5:13Speaker 2: on it. And there's also in the Secretary of Interior
- 5:16Speaker 2: there's a Geographic Names Information System. Uh so, I mean
- 5:21Speaker 2: where I tech on this stuff? Now, okay, so the
- 5:24Speaker 2: name changing to happen in a hurry Laughably. Mexican President
- 5:29Speaker 2: Claudia shinbaumb Pardo, that's the President of Mexican now. She
- 5:33Speaker 2: suggested that it shouldn't be called the Gulf of America,
- 5:37Speaker 2: that we should rename most of America is Mexican America
- 5:42Speaker 2: because there are maps pretty much that show you know, actually,
- 5:47Speaker 2: and if you went back even further, most of it
- 5:49Speaker 2: was originally called Old Spain. I mean so because his
- 5:52Speaker 2: Spanish are coming you when you start researching this, you
- 5:56Speaker 2: find all kinds of conflicts that occurred. I mean the
- 5:59Speaker 2: first people going into Mexican you know, when the Spanish
- 6:03Speaker 2: came over here. At first they conquered Hispaniola, which now
- 6:07Speaker 2: is at the islands called Hispaniola, but it's the Dominican
- 6:11Speaker 2: Republican Haiti. Two countries on one island, right, they call
- 6:15Speaker 2: it Hispaniola. Then they moved from there and they conquered Cuba,
- 6:18Speaker 2: took over Cuba, and then the Hernando Cortes they call
- 6:23Speaker 2: them Hernan Cortes, and a couple of other Spanish guys
- 6:28Speaker 2: trying to gain favor, wanted to go further and they
- 6:31Speaker 2: discovered the Yucatan. Well, if you look at the map,
- 6:34Speaker 2: the Yucatan Peninsula really sticks way up into the Gulf
- 6:37Speaker 2: of Mexico and where the Gulf of Mexico slash America is.
- 6:43Speaker 2: You know, growing up, I always thought it included basically
- 6:46Speaker 2: the whole Caribbean. On old Spanish maps and some modern
- 6:51Speaker 2: maps they call that whole basin, that whole entire area
- 6:55Speaker 2: the American Mediterranean Sea. Said that takes in all of
- 6:59Speaker 2: the care being in the Gulf of Mexico. So you
- 7:02Speaker 2: start arguing about where were you really talking about? Which
- 7:05Speaker 2: countries are on it. All those countries below Cuba are
- 7:09Speaker 2: not in the Gulf of Mexico, and the northern part
- 7:12Speaker 2: of South America would not be classified as being in
- 7:16Speaker 2: the Gulf of Mexico. Really kind of is just Mexico,
- 7:20Speaker 2: the United States, and then the top of Cuba. Everything
- 7:23Speaker 2: in there is what they're referring to and now going
- 7:26Speaker 2: to be called the Gulf of America. So a lot
- 7:29Speaker 2: of arguing back and forth. But when they conquered Mexico,
- 7:34Speaker 2: they discovered another civilization that they had no idea existed
- 7:38Speaker 2: that was fairly modern and buildings and a lot of gold,
- 7:43Speaker 2: and they got gold fever, which created all kinds of
- 7:47Speaker 2: traffic within this gulf and why things started being settled.
- 7:51Speaker 2: The time frames are huge when you look at the
- 7:53Speaker 2: time frames, it might be from fifteen twenty to fifteen
- 7:58Speaker 2: fifty before town are established. But they had to start
- 8:02Speaker 2: establishing towns all around the Gulf of Mexico because they
- 8:06Speaker 2: would have shipwrecks, a lot of shipwrecks, a lot of
- 8:09Speaker 2: hurricanes that would take ships down full of gold, and
- 8:12Speaker 2: in order to do rescue and salvage operations, they couldn't
- 8:15Speaker 2: go all the way from Havana all the way from Mexico,
- 8:19Speaker 2: so Mississippi where Ocean Springs, Mississippi is. They've created a
- 8:23Speaker 2: little settlement there, Pensacola Settlement there. Both of those settlements
- 8:29Speaker 2: were older than Saint Augustine, but Saint Augustine gets to
- 8:33Speaker 2: capture the name the oldest permanent settlement because they stayed
- 8:38Speaker 2: there and it grew from that. It's really growing now.
- 8:41Speaker 2: But back then it was not much there and all
- 8:44Speaker 2: those others kind of came and went. Pensacola was there then,
- 8:47Speaker 2: it wasn't there. The fort close. A lot of changes
- 8:50Speaker 2: that go on during this timeframe. Add the French to
- 8:54Speaker 2: the mix.
- 8:55Speaker 1: We always had the French to the mix.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Man. Yeah, they came in. They settled all around Pascal
- 9:00Speaker 2: in that area, and that Pensacola against right, So then
- 9:04Speaker 2: the English came in. So it's been a mess. It's
- 9:07Speaker 2: been I can go over the list. I'll find it
- 9:09Speaker 2: and go over the list of what this thing has
- 9:10Speaker 2: been called. It's incredible.
- 9:14Speaker 1: I almost feel bad. Thirteen pages of notes and he said,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I'm not even through my first.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Yeah, you can keep making fun of me.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I almost feel bad.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Well, I've talked about different things. Maybe that might be
- 9:29Speaker 2: on another page somewhere.
- 9:31Speaker 1: You know that it could be all these years, and
- 9:34Speaker 1: you still just do all this digging and you end
- 9:38Speaker 1: up leaving with all these extra pages. I said, write
- 9:41Speaker 1: a book, man, write a block.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Well, when miners dig for gold, they take out a
- 9:45Speaker 2: lot of rock and dig a big hole to find
- 9:48Speaker 2: a little piece of gold.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Well done, okay, well done?
- 9:52Speaker 2: All right? So the names, well, it's the way my
- 9:57Speaker 2: mind works. I started thinking, Okay, are there other bodies
- 9:59Speaker 2: of war anywhere around the world, or countries or anything
- 10:02Speaker 2: that the names are in dispute? Okay? And what came
- 10:07Speaker 2: to mind was, remember when the Brits invade invaded basically
- 10:10Speaker 2: Argentine territory, the Falkland Islands. The Argentines called it Las
- 10:15Speaker 2: Malvinas they it wasn't Falkland, that's a British name. So
- 10:18Speaker 2: they kind of still argue about that. You go to
- 10:21Speaker 2: the Sea of Japan, everybody calls this from the US
- 10:26Speaker 2: calls it the Sea of Japan. Well, Korea is on
- 10:29Speaker 2: one side of the Sea of Japan. They don't like it.
- 10:31Speaker 2: They want to call it the East Sea. Okay, in Korean,
- 10:35Speaker 2: but they actually even have a society for the East
- 10:39Speaker 2: Sea in Korea, and there's a lot of animosity when
- 10:44Speaker 2: you look back back to the Gulf our Golf. You know,
- 10:47Speaker 2: the English came in, the French came in. They're you know,
- 10:50Speaker 2: not battling over the water, but battling over the lands
- 10:53Speaker 2: around that water. Well, the Korea and Japan when you
- 10:56Speaker 2: get to them, Japan invaded Korea nineteen oh five. Around
- 11:02Speaker 2: there until the end of World War Two, they ruled Korea.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Japan ruled Korea.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Much less and not necessarily nicely.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Not nicely. That'sn't well. We could do a whole another
- 11:13Speaker 2: story on that. And I did a bunch of work
- 11:14Speaker 2: in Taiwan, and Japan controlled from the eighteen nineties to
- 11:19Speaker 2: nineteen forty five Taiwan nicely. I mean, they did some
- 11:23Speaker 2: bad things, but not like they did to Korea or
- 11:26Speaker 2: the Chinese. Right, they treated Taiwan differently. It was maybe
- 11:30Speaker 2: as it was their vacation spot, and they built road
- 11:33Speaker 2: systems and schools and did I mean, they really developed
- 11:36Speaker 2: Taiwan a little different than their attitude towards Korea and China.
- 11:41Speaker 2: But huge dispate dispute there. I talked about the fault
- 11:47Speaker 2: the South China Sea, pretty big body of water bigger
- 11:50Speaker 2: than the Gulf of Mexico. China calls it Non High,
- 11:54Speaker 2: which means South Sea. Pretty simple, but they dug deep
- 11:58Speaker 2: on that one, didn't. Yeah. Yeah, It's called the West
- 12:01Speaker 2: Philippine Sea by the Philipinos, it's called Indonesians call it
- 12:06Speaker 2: the North Natuna Sea, and Vietnam.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Does that mean there's no tuna to be found there?
- 12:11Speaker 2: Okay? And then the Vietnamese call it Biendong, which means
- 12:15Speaker 2: east sixty.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Hey, hey, hey, they'll get a little bit.
- 12:20Speaker 2: And all of the islands and the bays and the
- 12:22Speaker 2: coves and everything that are part all around all those
- 12:25Speaker 2: islands in the South China Sea all have multiple names.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Oh well, you got two minutes to tell me about
- 12:30Speaker 1: the Gulf of Mexico.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll get there. There's twenty three sovereign states within
- 12:34Speaker 2: what's called what they talked earlier about the American Mediterranean Sea,
- 12:37Speaker 2: twenty three different countries. They can all call it whatever
- 12:40Speaker 2: they want, basically the way these things are done. Sure,
- 12:43Speaker 2: so you could have twenty three names for the Gulf
- 12:45Speaker 2: of Mexico. There's fifteen dependencies that are lie within that
- 12:49Speaker 2: body of area, and then eighteen marginally named seas, which
- 12:52Speaker 2: took me to go, Okay, what is the sea? What
- 12:56Speaker 2: is a bay? What is a gulf? And when you
- 12:57Speaker 2: read up the definitions they bleed over. It's almost like
- 13:02Speaker 2: we're not sure you can call it what you want to.
- 13:04Speaker 2: You know, it's surrounded by land. Well it's the Gulf
- 13:06Speaker 2: of Mexico. Really surrounded by land. No, does it have
- 13:10Speaker 2: land on three sides? No, not really, they use it anyway,
- 13:13Speaker 2: so that's well kind of does sort of, but you
- 13:18Speaker 2: know's I mean, if you were to.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Put it on a compass, it would have you know,
- 13:22Speaker 1: roughly two hundred and seventy degrees.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, Mexico and the United States, mostly Florida. Yeah,
- 13:29Speaker 2: I mean, our coach is bigger than all the Alabama, Mississippi,
- 13:33Speaker 2: and Texas, right, all have borders there, So yeah, it's
- 13:39Speaker 2: but it's also Mexican. Mexican bordering the Gulf of America
- 13:44Speaker 2: is about thirteen hundred and seventy miles, and US territory
- 13:48Speaker 2: bordering the Gulf of Mexico is about thirteen hundred miles,
- 13:51Speaker 2: so it's almost exactly the same. So you're looking at
- 13:55Speaker 2: me with this strange look.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Well, I I keep waiting for all the names and
- 14:00Speaker 1: you're out of time.
- 14:01Speaker 2: I'm out of time. Oh well, save the names for
- 14:03Speaker 2: another day.
- 14:05Speaker 1: That's our invitation to read the blog.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been called so many things, depending on who
- 14:11Speaker 2: was doing the calling. That's my basic point of Angers
- 14:14Speaker 2: called it one thing, the Mexican people, the Spanish people,
- 14:18Speaker 2: the French, everybody had a different name for it. Explorers
- 14:20Speaker 2: all called it something different, Spain called it something different.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Well, it's going to be the Gulf of America because
- 14:26Speaker 1: Google says, so if you're if.
- 14:29Speaker 2: You're googling in Florida, you're a googlizer from Florida, you're
- 14:32Speaker 2: going to get Gulf of America.
- 14:34Speaker 1: What about if you're googling in.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Texas, probably the Gulf of America.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's all that matters what we think here
- 14:42Speaker 1: in America at.
- 14:43Speaker 2: The wall, when they finished the wall, it would keep
- 14:46Speaker 2: that information on one side, and you go right across,
- 14:49Speaker 2: go to Warrez, and they're going to tell you, no,
- 14:52Speaker 2: it's a Golf of Mexico.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Well, of course, there's no reason to go to Warrez.
- 14:55Speaker 1: There's no reason to go to anywhere in Mexico.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Now right now, I wouldn't be doing it.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Be well, thank you sir, Yeah, it's entertaining. Always doctor
- 15:03Speaker 1: edmore with me, a little more history here on the
- 15:05Speaker 1: Morning Show with Preston Scott
