- 0:00Jordan Bianca, the Athletic, It seems like Ross this year is
- 0:04really doing a lot of heavy lifting with the team.
- 0:06They're not qualifying well necessarily, but he's really
- 0:08pushing it and pushing them to a higher level than almost like
- 0:13almost even better than we've seen him before.
- 0:15What have you seen from Ross this year?
- 0:18Well, I mean exactly that. We, you know, we, we, we don't
- 0:20have a speed right now that we've had the last couple of
- 0:23years. And, and you know, the sport
- 0:24kind of ebbs and flows and teams have periods of a lot of winning
- 0:27and then get passed by and, and have to kind of regroup or
- 0:31reengineer the, you know, the the team to get back.
- 0:35That's kind of like where we're at right now.
- 0:36And you know, Ross, Ross is, is, you know, he's such an elite
- 0:40talent and he's, and you know, he's really, you know, one of
- 0:43the founding members of this organization.
- 0:45And you know, what I've said sort of throughout the year is
- 0:47like, you know, we, the problem that we have to diagnose is the
- 0:51fact that we, we just, we don't unload with a lot of speed.
- 0:54Like we have to do a lot of work on the weekends to put races
- 0:57together. And the execution that Ross and
- 1:00a lot of the the the teams inside of track house have is
- 1:03really, really good on Sundays. It's just really hard to do it
- 1:05in this era of the sport. If you're starting 25th, 28th,
- 1:0830th, you know, whatever, you know, to get up there is really,
- 1:11really difficult to do. And, and you know, I think, I
- 1:14think as we go through the process, Ross is very invested
- 1:17in the rebuilding process and really helping us kind of
- 1:19diagnose, you know, where there's gaps in the
- 1:21organization, where we need to, you know, be, be focused on
- 1:24things to, to get us back to, you know, back to where, where
- 1:27we need to be. And you know, we've, we've been
- 1:30working really hard on it and we unloaded with really good speed
- 1:33this weekend. Obviously, you know, had a
- 1:35problem in practice, went to the backup car, you know, started
- 1:37last, but the confidence was really, really high when we
- 1:40wrecked this car on on Saturday. And I was sitting there at the
- 1:45car in the garage and they were pulling parts off it.
- 1:48And Ross left the, the infield care center and he walked up to
- 1:51the car. He had a huge smile on his face
- 1:54and he was like, I know, I know this sucks.
- 1:56He's like, but, but that's what I'm talking about, bringing cars
- 1:59to the racetrack like that. That's what I'm talking about.
- 2:01And he was just super pumped. And, you know, that's just him
- 2:05being super invested in the process.
- 2:07And I just, I think Ross's in the conversation of the, you
- 2:10know, the best drivers in the NASCAR Cup Series right now.
- 2:13And you know, he shows that when he goes out there and puts the
- 2:15team on his shoulders right now as we try to rebuild.
- 2:18Part of his evolution, it seems like, you know, if you go back
- 2:21to 2022-2023, there's a lot of races he had a lot of speed, you
- 2:25know, a lot of laps LED, you know, all that stuff.
- 2:27Wasn't getting the finishes to correspond with it, right?
- 2:30And now though, it's kind of the opposite.
- 2:32So what is his evolution as a driver where he now kind of
- 2:36looks at the bigger picture and is kind of sees like, maybe I
- 2:39don't need to be so I don't lack a better term.
- 2:41Impatient, if you will. Yeah, it's experience.
- 2:43I mean, it's experience and understanding, you know, what it
- 2:46takes to be successful as a as a NASCAR Cup Series driver.
- 2:50And I think if you look back through, you know, time and you
- 2:54look at some of these really, really talented people that have
- 2:57shown up in the Cup series and just had all this talent and all
- 3:00this speed, but not a lot of experience.
- 3:03Sometimes it was problematic at the beginning.
- 3:05I think of like Brad Keselowski. And I think like some of these
- 3:07guys that that showed up and ruffled some feathers.
- 3:09And then they figured out how to sort of settle into a place
- 3:12where they can harness their talent and their speed into a
- 3:16way that's really productive in the races.
- 3:17And I think that's the evolution that that Ross has gone through
- 3:20is that he knows how to take that speed and deploy it when it
- 3:24makes the most sense and how to really put full races together.
- 3:26And I think it's just comes with time and experience is a very,
- 3:29very intelligent person. He's very cerebral.
- 3:31He, you know, he really digests the races when they're over and
- 3:34looks back through them. And I think, you know, he just
- 3:36had to go through the experience of understanding where the give
- 3:38and take is and how to really be a complete driver.
- 3:40And he's done that. Jacob Schumann Race Face Digital
- 3:42Justin, you're right, two for you.
- 3:44First, Phil was in here and talked a lot about the just the
- 3:49environment of the rebuild Saturday night.
- 3:52It actually got me thinking back to something you said.
- 3:55I think it was after Suarez's win at Atlanta last year about
- 3:59the culture that you've tried to really build and invest in at
- 4:04Track House. To have guys that are willing to
- 4:08give up their days off, come in, spend that time, lose sleep, and
- 4:13then pay it off with Ross getting a win like this, is that
- 4:17what you're talking about when you're looking for this kind of
- 4:21of relentless effort from from your guys and your crew that
- 4:25goes into making this successful?
- 4:26That's exactly what I'm looking for.
- 4:28I mean, to this weekend, I think was a master class in never
- 4:32giving up and grinding. And you know, it wasn't just the
- 4:35one team that built that car last night.
- 4:37I mean, it was people from all corners, the organization that
- 4:40said, I'll drop what I'm doing and drive to the shop and help.
- 4:43And because we, we're, we're, because we've all been working
- 4:46so hard the last month, month and a half to sort of turn this
- 4:49team around. And, you know, at a time like
- 4:52this, when we unloaded and we were so fast and it was like,
- 4:54man, like we're, we're starting to get there.
- 4:57Like we can feel the thing kind of turning around and, and
- 5:00that's exactly what I'm talking about.
- 5:02I stood in front of everybody at this organization, you know, the
- 5:04the first day that I took ownership of it back at the end
- 5:07of 2021. And I said, you know, we, we
- 5:09have everything that we need to be successful here.
- 5:11We just got to work together. We got to believe in each other.
- 5:14And we have to fundamentally believe that we can do it, that
- 5:17we can go win big races and contend for championships.
- 5:20And if we support each other and go the extra mile and do
- 5:24whatever it takes, then we can get there.
- 5:25And I think this weekend was was a a beautiful expression of
- 5:30that. And I'm, I am.
- 5:32So I don't want to sound, you know, romantic or whatever, but
- 5:34but it's, I mean, I am just so unbelievably proud of everybody
- 5:37because what they did this weekend was very, very, very
- 5:40difficult. And it was truly, it was truly a
- 5:44team win, you know, putting putting a race car together, you
- 5:47know, building a race car last night, bringing it to the
- 5:50racetrack, starting last, making good changes, good pit stops,
- 5:53good strategy. And then and then to what Jordan
- 5:56and I were talking about after that last pit stop, just putting
- 5:59it on the shoulders of our amazing race car driver, Ross
- 6:01Chastain to go punch it into victory lanes.
- 6:03Incredible. Obviously so much focus tonight
- 6:06on what Ross did and rightfully so, but you had the 4th car out
- 6:11with your young talent in Connor Zilich and I'm curious,
- 6:15obviously start 2 for him. So there's a lot, a lot to be
- 6:19looked forward to. What's your assessment of his
- 6:24early the evolution, not just you know in the couple starts in
- 6:27the Cup car, but really on the Xfinity side and what do you
- 6:31hope or or see his progression or pathway being over the next
- 6:36couple of years as you work to develop?
- 6:37Him, yeah. I think one of the things that
- 6:38makes Connor special is his rate of adaptability, and I've seen
- 6:42it a couple times in my life. There's, you know, there's a lot
- 6:44of talented race car, there's a lot of young race car drivers
- 6:46that are fast, a lot of guys that are talented.
- 6:48So it's like, how do you kind of, you know, look through all
- 6:51of those people and find the couple that are like the real
- 6:54standouts? And to me, it's really rate of
- 6:56adaptability. I mean, you know, Connor's been
- 6:58incredibly successful the first time he sat in cars and the
- 7:01first time he's been to races going out there and just
- 7:04figuring it out really quickly. So, you know, I, I think that
- 7:07he's, he's, you know, he's having a, you know, some, some
- 7:11ways a difficult season Xfinity, but an incredible amount of
- 7:13speed. He's had some bad luck,
- 7:14whatever, but he's, you know, he's, he's won a race, he'll go
- 7:16to the play offs and, and luck will come his way and, and, and
- 7:19he'll make a run for it. And then in the cup car, you
- 7:21know, we, you know, we've this is a development driver of ours.
- 7:25First time we've ever like really had a development driver.
- 7:27And I think development means supporting him on, you know,
- 7:31Fridays and Saturdays when he's when he's over at JRM and, and
- 7:34allowing him to have access to the tools and the company and
- 7:36everything and then getting him experience in the cup car.
- 7:38You have to these days just just put him in the car and throw him
- 7:42out there on the racetrack in the Cup series because there's
- 7:44no practice and there's no testing and there's and so, you
- 7:47know, when we're like, hey, you know, you're 18 years old, you
- 7:49know, we think you're, you're on your way to the Cup series
- 7:52pretty quickly. We got to just put you in the
- 7:54car and, and you know, obviously, you know, putting him
- 7:57in the car, a CODA, you know, a racetrack that he's been to done
- 8:00a lot of Rd. racing. You kind of eliminate as many
- 8:03new things as possible so he can learn kind of the flow of a Cup
- 8:06race. And then after that, you know,
- 8:08we'd circled this one on the calendar because he just gets a
- 8:11lot of laughs. He just gets to go out there and
- 8:12race for four hours and justice, get a ton of experience and
- 8:15learn, you know, restarts coming on and off pit Rd., all that
- 8:19kind of stuff. And so it's just part of getting
- 8:22him exposure, you know, to to the cup car.
- 8:25We'll see what his future holds. But you know, right now it's
- 8:27like we we have a mechanism in the company to put that extra
- 8:30car out like we've done with project 91 and, you know, we
- 8:33just we just want him to get that experience.
- 8:34No expectations for results or anything like that.
- 8:38You know, he got when the 84 went around today and he had
- 8:40some contact with him and tore the underbody off.
- 8:41He just was tight the rest of the night.
- 8:43So then it just became like, OK, let's just make the laps and
- 8:45kind of learn the flow of the race, you know, figure out how
- 8:48it's going to tax my body racing for 600 miles, just all that
- 8:51kind of stuff. So it's just we have an
- 8:52opportunity to give him a learning experience and, and
- 8:54we'll continue to do that. But the Cup Series is, it's a
- 8:56different sport than the Xfinity Series.
- 8:58I mean, it is just so, so difficult.
- 9:00And the only way to learn and get ready for something like
- 9:02that is just go out there and do it.
- 9:03We've seen it in the past that guys have moved up too quickly
- 9:06and, and it's, it's been difficult for him.
- 9:08So, you know, we're, we're, you know, being very measured in our
- 9:10approach and we're talking about what his future.
- 9:12We don't know what his future looks like right now, but we're
- 9:14just, we're happy that he's in that JRM car.
- 9:16We're happy that we're him laps in the cuff car and you know, we
- 9:21we have a lot of faith in his ability.
- 9:22We think he's a really, really special talent.
- 9:23But we have to be intentional and mindful about how we we
- 9:27bring him up because we want to certainly give him the best
- 9:30opportunity to succeed. Zachsterniolonascar.com Justin
- 9:33Certainly Shane's Chicago win was a signature moment, but the
- 9:36first crown jewel victory for this organization comes just
- 9:40down the road from the team shop.
- 9:41What is the significance of this moment for you personally, but
- 9:45also for the whole of track house racing?
- 9:47I think for me personally and the whole of track house racing
- 9:49are the same thing. I mean, I'm a team person and
- 9:52I'm, I'm like, I don't, it doesn't matter what I feel about
- 9:54it. I mean, it's meant to me.
- 9:55It's it's about the team. It's about getting a bunch of
- 9:57people together that believe that we can we can go do things
- 10:01like pass Hendrick Motorsports with 10 laps to go in the Coke
- 10:03600 and win it. Like we just believe that we can
- 10:06give our drivers the opportunity to do those things.
- 10:10And so I, you know, I my mind raced and I forgot your
- 10:15question, but yeah, yeah, thank you.
- 10:18So, you know, this is obviously you have these marquee events,
- 10:21right? So like the Daytona 500.
- 10:23I've got my own opinions about the Daytona 500 as a race, but I
- 10:26think when you when when you have these tent pole events that
- 10:29have a lot of history and they're meaningful, it carries
- 10:33special significance because obviously this is, you know, the
- 10:36only home game that this sport has.
- 10:39And we have a lot of people that come that don't typically get to
- 10:42go to the races that come out for this race.
- 10:44And we have wives and girlfriends and kids and
- 10:46everybody comes out to this race.
- 10:47And people that work so hard, you know, 365 days a year that
- 10:50don't actually get to go to the racetrack and watch the race
- 10:52cars. They're here tonight and a ton
- 10:54of sponsors and a ton of fans. And then, you know, when you
- 10:57look at a race like the Coke 600, you can't look at a race
- 10:59like this and not, not envision, you know, Dale Earnhardt driving
- 11:04through the grass here and, and you know, Jeff Gordon's first
- 11:07win and like these big moments and all this big history when
- 11:10they first built the racetrack and all that stuff.
- 11:11So it, you know, it's a moment that holds special significance
- 11:14for everybody in the company. And it's a moment that, you
- 11:17know, we that it's an honor. It's just an honor to win here
- 11:20because it's such a it's such an important event to the history
- 11:23of the sport. Dustin Long, NBC Sports Justin,
- 11:26Compared to some of the established car owners who've
- 11:30had success and been in the sport for a long time.
- 11:33You're just still a youngster and still learning and going
- 11:37through that process with being in a few years.
- 11:38And I'm just curious, what are the lessons that you're learning
- 11:42that you feel like we're going to help you close the gap with
- 11:47Hendrick Gibbs and Penske at this point, because they seem to
- 11:49be seems to be those three teams and then a gap to others.
- 11:53Everybody's kind of fighting for that.
- 11:54What, how do you close that gap and, and how are the things that
- 11:57you have done right or maybe didn't do right the last couple
- 12:01years to get back up, to get into a space like that?
- 12:05Yeah, that's a great question. Well, I mean, I would answer
- 12:08that by I am. I'm still, I'm still learning
- 12:13that that fundamentally drives my days.
- 12:16Every day is trying to figure out, you know, what it is that
- 12:19makes those organizations as successful as they are.
- 12:22Now, if we want to be intellectually lazy, we can just
- 12:25say, well, they just have more money and they have more people.
- 12:27And, and I think that I think that, you know, that's certainly
- 12:31important. They have a lot of resources and
- 12:33that that's very important. So like, if you look back in
- 12:352022, we had what, 20 winners, 19, whatever it was 20 winners
- 12:38and 2022. And then those teams that have
- 12:41all those resources, they just they're learning and their
- 12:44development curve is quick because they've got the
- 12:46resources to put behind it. And so, you know, you come to a
- 12:49year like this where, you know, OK, Edward brothers win, track
- 12:53house wins. Other than that, you know, see
- 12:55bells three in a row and and Gibbs has, you know, Denny has
- 12:57two and all. So how do we close the gap?
- 13:01I mean, I think this car represents an opportunity to do
- 13:04that. That's why I'm here.
- 13:05I mean, I would not have started track house and raced in the Cup
- 13:08series if they didn't go to this race car because I think that
- 13:10that that it provides an opportunity to close the gap.
- 13:14You know, what have I learned along the way?
- 13:16You know, this is a people game. I mean, I do really work hard on
- 13:20trying to get, you know, talented people motivated to do
- 13:23really good work. I mean, I feel like when I sit
- 13:25up here, I say a lot of cliches, but it's it's like, but it's
- 13:28true. I mean, it's really, it's really
- 13:31true. You can have an organization
- 13:34with a lot of money and a lot of people that can't figure out how
- 13:37to all work together and put fast things on the racetrack.
- 13:40That's certainly possible. You know, we, we don't, we're
- 13:43not as as big of an organization as those 3, but I, we do
- 13:47continue to grow and right now I think provides an opportunity
- 13:51for us to re look at that delta between US and those big teams.
- 13:55As we go through the struggles that we are right now.
- 13:57We're looking at things like developing a more robust aero
- 13:59department, looking at the way we structure our engineering,
- 14:02you know, looking at those things to, to make sure that we
- 14:04get back on the development curve with those 3.
- 14:06So it just takes very thoughtful examination and, and it's a
- 14:13process that probably will never stop because Hendrick
- 14:17Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing and Penske Racing are just very,
- 14:20very strong, talented organizations.
- 14:23And I think the fact that we've won, you know, 9 races in 3 1/2
- 14:27years, you know, it's, it's a lot of motivation for everybody
- 14:30in our company to just keep trying to work towards that.
- 14:33Justin, today we saw Kyle Larson do the double.
- 14:36I think you've expressed interest from a car owner's
- 14:38perspective. Obviously a frustrating day for
- 14:41Kyle, admittedly. So he kind of expressed the
- 14:44notion that that the double maybe because of the time limit,
- 14:49the time between the races, it just might not be a feasible
- 14:51thing from a Motorsports perspective.
- 14:54When you look at the big picture, how important is it to
- 14:57have somebody do that for Motorsports in general?
- 15:02And is that something that needs to be looked at if there's a way
- 15:05of widening the the window a little bit to help this or
- 15:10because it seems like at this point it this notion, at least
- 15:13from a Cup drivers perspective, may be dead?
- 15:15Yeah, I mean, my heart, my heart breaks for Kyle.
- 15:18Kyle's a friend of mine. We were business partners.
- 15:20We want a race team together. I know how much he how much, how
- 15:23important the Speedway is to him.
- 15:25You know, I'm a believer that I don't think Motorsports should
- 15:28be in competition with each other.
- 15:29I don't think the industry is big enough for us to be trying
- 15:33to make things difficult on each other.
- 15:36I think there's strength and collaboration between the two.
- 15:39So, you know, I think in, in, in a, in the way the world is right
- 15:42now, you know, live events, especially live sporting events
- 15:44are becoming more and more powerful and valuable.
- 15:47And it's increasingly digital and detached world.
- 15:49And I think that we have an amazing product and cars going
- 15:52around a racetrack 200 miles an hour is incredibly visceral,
- 15:55like authentic, raw, amazing experience.
- 15:57And there's power in that. And I think that certainly like
- 15:59the, you know, the ride, the the tide that raises all ships is a
- 16:02real thing. So like if I was running
- 16:04everything, I would, I would do everything in my power to make
- 16:08sure things like that double can happen.
- 16:11Because I think it's it's an amazing opportunity for NASCAR
- 16:15fans that want to watch their favorite NASCAR driver, maybe
- 16:18watch the Indy 500 for the first time, learn about Indycars,
- 16:21learn new stories, all that and vice versa.
- 16:23So I would, you know, I don't, I don't know if you, I don't know
- 16:29if you'd like change the schedule of the day, but I think
- 16:31that people need to be working in a direction to try to make it
- 16:35happen versus trying to not make it happen.
- 16:37Shane Connick, Charlotte Observer.
- 16:39Congratulations, Justin. So Ross Chastain now becomes the
- 16:42first drivers in 54 years to start in the back and win a
- 16:47NASCAR Cup Series race. So when you look at the team and
- 16:50you think about everything you guys have been sitting up here
- 16:51talking about the past 24 hours, what does this mean for the
- 16:54number one team? Well, you know, what's funny is
- 16:56and we had this talking to Victory Lane, it was like Tony
- 16:58Lunders, our competition director, came up to me and he
- 17:01was like, man, it's just, it seems like all of our wins are
- 17:03like there's some, there's no boring win like the track house
- 17:06has had. It's all like some kind of
- 17:08story. And it's funny how that happens.
- 17:10Like, you know, it happened at at Chicago with, you know, with
- 17:14Shane and everything. You know, it's it's really neat
- 17:17that our wins typically have have like some kind of
- 17:22historical context around them, right?
- 17:24Like Ross winning it at Phoenix, being the first one, I guess in
- 17:28the modern era to win that wasn't in the championship for,
- 17:31you know, Daniel finishing, you know, winning the closest three
- 17:33wide finish ever, like those kinds of things.
- 17:36And then a really, really cool stat like that.
- 17:40I think it's just really a powerful testament to to
- 17:44everybody that that works for the team and that chipped in
- 17:47this weekend, chipped in last night, ordered the pizzas,
- 17:49stayed up till 2:00 in the morning, got there, you know,
- 17:52before the sun came up to button up the car and everything, you
- 17:55know, to to be able to look at all them.
- 17:57They're all tired right now. They've been working basically
- 17:5948 hours straight. They're on their way home right
- 18:01now and they're going to lay their head on the pillow.
- 18:03They got to be at shop at the shop tomorrow at 9:00, eight
- 18:05o'clock, except some will be there at six.
- 18:07And you know, to, to say something like you guys did
- 18:12this. You went and got the backup car.
- 18:14You built it overnight. You brought it to the racetrack
- 18:16and became the first person. And I think you said 54 years,
- 18:19you know, to win from last place in the Cup Series.
- 18:21It's an amazing thing to put your arm around him and say
- 18:24like, you deserve it. You did that.
- 18:25That's that's an honor that you that you have.
- 18:28Deb Williams Auto Week Congratulations, Justin.
- 18:31To kind of build on what Dustin was asking.
- 18:34When Richard Childress started building his team in the 1980s,
- 18:39he said he wanted to bring people in who had never worked
- 18:42for another race team because he wanted to train them in his way.
- 18:46He didn't want someone else coming in with bad habits from
- 18:49another race team. How would you like to go?
- 18:52Would you like to bring someone in that's never worked for
- 18:55another team to bring that, to build that camaraderie in the
- 18:58way you want it rather than having to deal with maybe bad
- 19:02habits from other race teams? Well, it's an interesting
- 19:04question because as we look at, you know, where it's difficult
- 19:07to find good people right now to work on these race teams,
- 19:09especially ones to travel. And, and so as we've looked to
- 19:12kind of expand our organization and hire, you know, we've, we
- 19:16have spent time exploring where we could find people that have
- 19:20the right framework of experience and talent to work on
- 19:23race cars that maybe haven't worked on race cars before.
- 19:25Like for instance, if we could put a training protocol in place
- 19:29at side track, inside track house and be able to hire from
- 19:32like the aerospace industry or something like this, where the
- 19:34addressable market of talent is so big.
- 19:36And you've got so many talented people that are really good
- 19:39mechanically and good working on things.
- 19:41And, you know, maybe they leave SpaceX and they're building
- 19:43rockets and now they're building shock absorbers for the one car
- 19:45or whatever. And like we can train them.
- 19:47We've had had that conversation and it's kind of sexy to like
- 19:51think about that and to kind of like, you know, do things a
- 19:54little bit different. But there's something that's
- 19:57very, very proprietary about racing.
- 19:59And there's something about, especially in NASCAR, when
- 20:02you're racing every single week and there's a culture in the
- 20:06garage area and all of that, that that is it's very, very
- 20:09difficult to train for so. You know what I, So what I did
- 20:14is, you know, when, when we took over Ganassi and we kept, you
- 20:17know, 125 people that were working for Ganassi and you
- 20:20know, we just were very intentional and impactful about
- 20:24changing the attitude in the shop.
- 20:25We did like, you know, not that Chip was doing anything wrong,
- 20:28but just because my, you know, my, my way of doing things is
- 20:30just different that I really wanted to identify and execute a
- 20:34real clear delineation point between the end of Chip Ganassi
- 20:37racing and the beginning of, of track house racing.
- 20:39And then just daily like investing in the work experience
- 20:43and investing in relationships with everybody that works the
- 20:45business. So, you know, to answer your
- 20:47question, I think there's an opportunity to attract really,
- 20:50really great talent from, from other industries And you, but
- 20:55you just, you can't start from nothing these days.
- 20:58Just just because you know, the tech process and like
- 21:00understanding the rule book and you know, the dance of kind of
- 21:04like travelling every single week and, and the culture in the
- 21:08garage. It's just so difficult to teach
- 21:11somebody. So we kind of try to run that
- 21:14balance between getting people to understand what NASCAR
- 21:16racing's all about, but also are open, open minded to looking at
- 21:21things in a fresh way and maybe like forgetting what they've
- 21:23known before and are open to accepting maybe like a new
- 21:26attitude or a new culture or anything like that.
