Latest / Harder Than Life / Discipline vs Motivation: The Rule That Built My Business
Transcript
- 0:00Motivation has never built a single thing that I own.
- 0:03And I say that as somebody who spent years waiting to feel ready before I did anything, and ready never showed up.
- 0:12So neither did the money or the goal that I was reaching out for.
- 0:18Subscribe if you want more of these.
- 0:20Stay to the end of this video, and I'm going to give you the one rule I made.
- 0:25that took feeling out of the equation completely.
- 0:29And it's the reason that both companies, Harder Than Life and NTM exist at all.
- 0:36I'm Kelly Siegel, this is Harder Than Life.
- 0:39All right, motivation is a scam.
- 0:43Everyone is selling you this feel good feeling.
- 0:47The motivation industry's product isn't change.
- 0:52It's the sensation of being about to change.
- 0:56And that sensation is a drug with a two day half-life.
- 1:00Heck, it might even be a half a day.
- 1:03But think about that for a second.
- 1:06When you make the decision, I'm gonna change something, you get all excited.
- 1:09And then it dies off so quickly.
- 1:10Stay with me, watching motivation is avoidance.
- 1:16Consuming your fifth motivational reel of the morning feels like progress and costs you nothing.
- 1:21That's exactly why it works and exactly why it's worthless.
- 1:28I used to wake up and listen to motivational videos and get all fired up.
- 1:34Then I looked around and realized it really wasn't doing what I wanted it to do.
- 1:39The most disciplined people don't feel like doing the work either.
- 1:41They just stopped consulting the feeling before doing it.
- 1:45You've heard me say this a thousand times.
- 1:47I never negotiate with myself because those feelings will quit on you.
- 1:54Motivation is like the weather.
- 1:57Discipline is the climate.
- 1:59You don't build a company, a body.
- 2:01a marriage on weather.
- 2:04Feelings quit in a week at 5 a.m. when the deal falls through, when things get hard.
- 2:10And here's the funny thing about it.
- 2:11I'm usually in Michigan or even Florida, and if you make plans based on the weather, you'd never do anything.
- 2:18So let's get into how we do this.
- 2:21And I gotta be completely honest.
- 2:24I profit from motivation.
- 2:27Hear me out on this.
- 2:28I want to get ahead of the hypocrisy charge.
- 2:30Yes, I'm in the self-improvement space.
- 2:34The difference in me is I sell the proof and the systems.
- 2:38And I'm telling you the feeling alone is worthless.
- 2:41I'd say sell, I'm just always repeating the receipts and the systems that I use over and over.
- 2:50Remember, systems, save yourself time, energy, money, and stress.
- 2:55That's how I do things.
- 2:56I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but I have systems that absolutely keep me from being able to bug out.
- 3:06There were years I waited to feel ready and ready never showed up.
- 3:11The ideas I sat on, the moves I delayed, waiting for the confidence that was supposed to arrive first and the money that didn't arrive either.
- 3:21Remember that
- 3:23ABC, action builds confidence, not the other way around.
- 3:29I was raised by broken promises.
- 3:33Nobody in my childhood kept their word.
- 3:36Not about the drinking, not about the violence, not about food, not about tomorrow.
- 3:45A kid built by broken promises grows into a big, strong man who waits for guarantees.
- 3:52And waiting is fear wearing patient's clothes.
- 3:56How many times have you all said, I'm waiting for the right time?
- 4:00And it's the most respectable sounding lie in business.
- 4:05I want you to call it what it is.
- 4:07And that waiting gets embarrassing.
- 4:10It is a lie.
- 4:11There is never going to be a right time.
- 4:13Actually, the best time to start is yesterday.
- 4:16And yesterday has already passed, so let's start right now.
- 4:19And here is what I want you to understand.
- 4:22There was a day that the waiting broke.
- 4:26And it's the moment I realized the feeling was never coming and I had to move without it.
- 4:34Remember, progress over perfection.
- 4:38And I'm going to give you the number one rule that I use to proceed anyway.
- 4:47But you're gonna have to wait.
- 4:48I'm gonna deep dive into what actually build my companies.
- 4:52Nobody buys brilliance, they buy reliability.
- 4:56Clients didn't sign with an NTM because I was the smartest tech guy in Detroit.
- 5:01For those of you that know me, you know, I'm not the smartest guy in any room.
- 5:05Definitely not technical.
- 5:07They signed with us because if I said it would happen on Tuesday, it happened on Tuesday.
- 5:14My word is gold.
- 5:17You'll see me post all about it.
- 5:19Make sure that your words and actions align and people will trust you.
- 5:25Another pro tip is to show up on the bad days.
- 5:28The receipts, the days I showed up grieving.
- 5:31Broke, scared.
- 5:33Heck, when I first started, it was drunk and hungover.
- 5:36There is a rule.
- 5:38I'll give it to you at the end, but it didn't care how I felt.
- 5:42And those bad day appearances are the entire difference between me and my competition or other people that I started with.
- 5:50My competitors kept quitting.
- 5:52The market share I won wasn't taken.
- 5:56It was abandoned by talented companies and guys who ran on motivation.
- 6:01and disappeared every time the feeling did.
- 6:06Your word is the only marketing that compounds.
- 6:11Every kept commitment became a referral.
- 6:14Every referral became a client already sold before I walked in and reliability is that flywheel and it expands and allows you to lift and do expansive things.
- 6:29Remember,
- 6:31Hard can be fun and it is fun.
- 6:35Somewhere in my grind, it stopped being a burden and became an identity.
- 6:42We make fun look easy because we do the boring reps nobody claps for.
- 6:46And remember, winning is more fun than fun is fun.
- 6:51So keep doing this.
- 6:53You will win and that's fun.
- 6:59Keep in mind,
- 7:01Discipline you can hire, but you need to install systems and patterns and processes.
- 7:09I used to say people, processes, platform.
- 7:13But when I was saying that, the company was running on my mood.
- 7:18For years, NTM's discipline was my discipline, which means the business had a single point of failure with my name on it.
- 7:27And this, my friends, is literally how the harder than life movement started because I would look in the mirror and I wasn't in alignment with what I was saying and I would be partying and rocking it out, not feel good, come in, not be my best.
- 7:45And it was life's negative merry-go-round.
- 7:49That all changed when I started implementing systems and in NTM,
- 7:55The systems that save people, we run EOS, Entrepreneurial Operating System.
- 8:00And the fix wasn't hiring more motivated people.
- 8:03It was installing that EOS system.
- 8:06I had scorecards, rocks, level 10 meetings, starting on time every single week on a Wednesday, starting on time, ending on time.
- 8:17We solved issues and we were actually productive.
- 8:22No negotiations.
- 8:25Not when I felt like it.
- 8:26We just had it no matter what.
- 8:28What you measure gets better.
- 8:30Score cards measure these outcomes, not activities.
- 8:35Busy is a feeling too.
- 8:37The score card doesn't ask if you worked hard.
- 8:39It asks if the number moved.
- 8:42If you actually got to your outcome.
- 8:45I've said it a thousand times to you.
- 8:46We can walk on a treadmill and we never actually go anywhere.
- 8:50So people can be busy doing nothing.
- 8:52Pro tip, look at revenue generating activities and needle mover tasks.
- 9:00Everything else is just busy.
- 9:02So measure gets better, measure needle mover activities, needle mover tasks and revenue generating activities.
- 9:09You can't interview for motivation, it's fakeable.
- 9:13for exactly one quarter.
- 9:15And that's usually when we do a new hire, exactly how long it takes before they get exposed.
- 9:21Day 91.
- 9:24But if you build systems where kept commitments are visible, measured, and non-negotiable, everybody wins.
- 9:36Now, years after implementing this EOS, NTM runs on Rails now.
- 9:43Company that performs whether I'm in the building or not, that's not luck and it's not talent.
- 9:48It's the rule that I'm gonna share with you very soon.
- 9:51If you stayed this long, keep staying with me because you're gonna freak out when I tell you how simple this is.
- 9:57Remember, I installed this rule into an operating system and then everything changed.
- 10:03You guys ready for it?
- 10:05There's one system, one Kelly, my body,
- 10:09my mind, the business, the family, it's never four departments.
- 10:15There's one rule and it's the same rule, runs all of it.
- 10:20And weakness in one arena leaks into all of them.
- 10:25Everybody talks about that work-life balance.
- 10:28That's hogwash.
- 10:30I worked out over 555 times last year with zero motivation.
- 10:36The physique wasn't built on feeling like it.
- 10:40How many of those workouts do you think I was excited for?
- 10:45I can honestly tell you very few, especially the second workouts, because for those of you keeping track, 555 workouts is one and a half times a day, but many were double.
- 10:56Keep in mind too, doing all this without drinking is maximum difficulty.
- 11:02Seven plus years against the loudest feelings a body can produce.
- 11:08If a rule can hold there, it will hold anywhere.
- 11:11I will go out with people who were drinking and not have a drop and still have just as much fun.
- 11:17Keep in mind, the rule that I'm going to share with you, your kids are auditing as well.
- 11:23All the people around you who are closest to you, don't hear your intentions.
- 11:29They count your follow through.
- 11:32My daughter Ari learned what my word is worth by watching, not by listening.
- 11:39Here's the rule, my friends.
- 11:41You waited 13 minutes just to hear this, hear this.
- 11:45Do what you say you're going to do every single time.
- 11:51Period.
- 11:52Let me say it again.
- 11:53Do what you say every time.
- 11:57To your clients, to your team, to your family.
- 12:04But most importantly,
- 12:06to the person in the mirror, the man in the mirror.
- 12:08And if I slip one second and I don't honor my word, the things I say to myself, you wouldn't like me if I said them to you.
- 12:21Every time is the entire rule.
- 12:26No negotiations, not when it's convenient, not when the client is watching, not when you feel like it.
- 12:37It's what makes a rule instead of a mood.
- 12:40One exception, and it's merely a suggestion.
- 12:43It takes feeling completely out of the situation.
- 12:48Once the rule exists, readiness is irrelevant.
- 12:54The decision was made when you gave your word.
- 12:58So 5 a.m. isn't a debate.
- 13:00It's an appointment.
- 13:01It's a commitment, and I'm gonna meet it.
- 13:05And remember, my day starts off
- 13:07with the mirror.
- 13:08I look in the mirror, I high five myself.
- 13:11I say, I love you.
- 13:12And that's my first client.
- 13:16So this order matters.
- 13:17Keep the promises to yourself first.
- 13:23Because someone who lies to themselves at 5 a.m. will lie to this team at 9 a.m. and will lie at other things and in business.
- 13:34So in essence, I'm pretty much saying just don't lie.
- 13:38I literally, in my bathroom, it says, love everybody and tell the truth.
- 13:42But tell the truth to yourself.
- 13:47And the smallest promises count double, heck, maybe triple.
- 13:53Nobody breaks the big promises first.
- 13:56They break the small, tiny ones they think nobody will notice.
- 14:00The workout, the callback, the bedtime, the cheat meal.
- 14:09The rule lives or dies in those small moments.
- 14:14What do they say?
- 14:15Don't sweat the small stuff and it's all small stuff.
- 14:19And what comes out of keeping the promises you make to yourself and everybody else?
- 14:22I said it earlier, ABC.
- 14:25Action builds confidence.
- 14:27Confidence is the byproduct.
- 14:30You can't affirm your way to confidence.
- 14:32It's the mathematical result of promises kept.
- 14:37And it stacks and compounds daily.
- 14:41That's why the rule built the company and the man I am today.
- 14:49So homework.
- 14:51This is a funny one.
- 14:52And I do this in my journal.
- 14:53I do this.
- 14:55So please follow with me.
- 14:58Write down every promise you made this week, whether it be from your clients, your team, your family, definitely to yourself.
- 15:08And score it very simply.
- 15:10Did I keep it or did I break it?
- 15:13The number will humble you.
- 15:14Be honest, obviously.
- 15:17This is all about honesty.
- 15:19Simple and easy thing is write down the three things that you want to get done each day in your journal.
- 15:25And then if you did it the next day, very simple and easy way, that number, don't beat yourself up.
- 15:31If you missed every single promise, just keep one the next day.
- 15:36Pick something small, one promise and keep it for 30 days.
- 15:44Pick something small enough to be unbreakable and keep it daily.
- 15:47You're not building a habit.
- 15:49You're rebuilding trust with the man in the mirror.
- 15:54Pro tip, don't announce this.
- 15:56Demonstrate it.
- 15:58Stop telling people what you're about to do.
- 16:01It's the proof over the promise.
- 16:04Let them find out the way they found out about me.
- 16:10Besides, if you tell them and then you don't follow through, that adds to the embarrassment.
- 16:17Just kidding.
- 16:19I always tell people don't pay attention to people's tongue in their mouth.
- 16:22Pay attention to the tongue in their feet.
- 16:28Keep in mind, this rule is free to all of us.
- 16:32There's no coursework.
- 16:33There's no coach.
- 16:35There's no morning routine required is literally six words starting tomorrow at whatever time you're already said you'd wake up, go back,
- 16:49And do what you say every time.
- 16:53Period.
- 16:57If you've watched 100 motivational videos and changed nothing, subscribe and keep one promise.
- 17:05Face your fears.
- 17:06Live your dreams.
