- 0:00Speaker 3: Which is so much better than the negative thoughts I used to dwell
- 0:03on, uh, to repent and to walk away from the, the mud puddle of negative
- 0:09thoughts, um, makes a big difference.
- 0:12Speaker 2: welcome to the Christian homemaking podcast, Simply Convivial.
- 0:15I'm Misty Winkler, homemaker, homeschool mom of five, grandma, and author of
- 0:20the book Home is for Hospitality: Why Your Home and Homemaking Matter.
- 0:25Convivial means living together with joy, and that's the kind of home atmosphere
- 0:31that we want to create in our homes.
- 0:34That's why I created Convivial Circle, a community helping women to excel
- 0:38at homemaking and do life cheerfully.
- 0:41And today I'm joined by one of our longest time members and mentors, Sara Nelson.
- 0:49Sara lives in California with her husband of 24 years, and two teen daughters.
- 0:55They homeschool with the help of a local classical hybrid homeschool community.
- 1:00Throughâ¦
- 1:01Whoop.
- 1:02Though grateful for the opportunities available in the city, she dreams
- 1:06of quiet family life in the country.
- 1:09So thank you so much for joining me today, Sara.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Yes, happy to be here.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Well, as a team behind the scenes, we were talking about
- 1:17alignment cards, and Organize October, and who to have on the podcast to
- 1:23talk about alignment cards, and everyone instantly said, "Well,
- 1:27Sara is the alignment card queen."
- 1:31Speaker 3: Well, I love them, and they've helped so much, so that's, uhâ¦
- 1:34I'll, I'll tell everybody about them.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:36So how did you get started with alignment cards, and then
- 1:40how did it progress over time?
- 1:42Speaker 3: Well, as I was thinking back, I've always collected quotes and
- 1:47sayings, and things that just amused me.
- 1:49And it kind of started turning into, you know, useful alignment cards as I, um,
- 1:57as I started, like, taking the verse of the day and putting it on the wall and
- 2:00things, and it started making some sense.
- 2:03I would say that my, my head is very busy, and The internal
- 2:08voices are not always very kind.
- 2:11Um, so itâ¦
- 2:13Over the years realizing that I have the job I want, and why is it so
- 2:21hard, and maybe I need a better story.
- 2:23So the alignment cards help, uh, reframe that story, help reset the voices in
- 2:28the head, as opposed to just avoiding them and, uh, seeking distraction
- 2:33instead of, uh, faithfulness, I guess.
- 2:36Oh.
- 2:36So that's-
- 2:37Speaker 2: Smart.
- 2:38Yeah.
- 2:39Yeah.
- 2:39When we would normally turn to distraction, it often is
- 2:43because we don't want to pay attention to what's in our heads.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:47That's very true I grew up reading and, you know, just light reading,
- 2:51anything that was a distraction.
- 2:53So how fast could I read how many books, you know?
- 2:55So that was the, the out, and then which turned to TV, and then of
- 2:59course, eventually a cellphone.
- 3:01Um, none of those were very constructive.
- 3:04I mean, the reading was at least useful, but, uh, you know, none
- 3:08of those were very constructive.
- 3:09So, um, finding a new way to, um, I guess, you know, live with myself
- 3:15was, uh, an important step forward.
- 3:18And having, having bite-sized bits of truth to turn to, uh,
- 3:23makes a big difference in that.
- 3:25Speaker 2: So where are some of the places that you've put
- 3:28alignment cards over the years?
- 3:30Speaker 3: Um, well, I started with, um, some verses on the kitchen cabinets.
- 3:34Like, I found out I could take the, you know, the verse of the day from
- 3:39the Bible app and, like, print it.
- 3:41I had a printer that would do 4x6 photos just really easy, and so I'd,
- 3:46you know, put it on a background and print it out, and I stuck those up.
- 3:50Oh, goodness, since kindergarten I've had, um, "And let us not grow weary in doing
- 3:54good" on my cellphone lock screen, and I don't think I can ever get rid of that.
- 3:58So, you know, that's one.
- 4:00Um, when I started writing them out for Humble Habits, I put it in the
- 4:04bathroom where I brush my teeth.
- 4:05And then that, little by little, I just kept adding them down the side
- 4:11of the cabinet there and the wall.
- 4:13So I think I have probably a dozen of them there now.
- 4:17I went around and took some pictures 'cause I was like, "I need to remember."
- 4:20So, um, I don't like getting rid of them.
- 4:23I've had one or two that didn't fit overâ¦
- 4:27You know, I covered them over, but I couldn't quite get rid of them.
- 4:30So I just keep adding.
- 4:31I have them by my bed.
- 4:32I have them across the way here in this room where I usually sit.
- 4:37Um, so they just kind of multiply.
- 4:41Uh, seeing things vertical really helps me keep it in mind as opposed
- 4:45to, uh, you know, just out of sight.
- 4:48And even, I mean, goodness, how many times have I read the quote
- 4:51behind your shoulder there and, uh, used, and repeated that to people?
- 4:55So yep.
- 4:56Speaker 2: So, how do you then use them?
- 5:01Like, I think it's so easy for those alignment cards that we put
- 5:05up to just become almost background noise that we don't pay attention
- 5:09to or s- even see that it's there.
- 5:12Mm-hmm.
- 5:13How do you bring your attention to them or kind of overcome that?
- 5:18Speaker 3: I don't know if it's just personality or, or what,
- 5:21because I find myself reading them.
- 5:24They're there.
- 5:24I've always been a person who reads whatever's in front of me, which can
- 5:28be a real hassle and a distraction.
- 5:30Um, as a kid, you're like, "Wait," you can't focus on anything
- 5:35because there's words everywhere.
- 5:37So having them there really just brings them to mind.
- 5:41Um, and you know, I have to like stop and choose one and, and actually, you know,
- 5:46read through it, you know, to myself.
- 5:49But just that they're there, you know?
- 5:51And I don't read them all every time, it just, the one- my eyes land on one
- 5:56of them, and it's like, "Oh, that's the one I need to read," and it works.
- 5:59Um, and I've read them so much that they now stick in my head.
- 6:04And as I was saying, I also use songs and, uh, you know, I'm in the church
- 6:10choir, so the songs we sing or the hymns we sing those become their own form
- 6:15of alignment because they're there.
- 6:17And so when I'm walking around the neighborhood or when I wake
- 6:20in the night, um, I just fall back on them and it's easy.
- 6:25Um, and it always, it has this way of feeling like, um, the bit that comes to
- 6:31mind is the part that I needed to hear.
- 6:34Um, which is so reassuring that, you know, when you remember, um, God is my refuge
- 6:39and strength, and you go, "And oh, yeah."
- 6:41And it just, it suddenly feels like that's what I needed to hear.
- 6:44So, um, the more I put it in, the better off it becomes.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:50Yeah, that's what God uses and brings to mind at the right moments.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 6:54Yep.
- 6:55Which is so much better than the negative thoughts I used to dwell on,
- 6:59um, to, uh, to repent and to walk away from the, the mud puddle of negative
- 7:06thoughts, um, makes a big difference.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:10Speaker 2: And having those concrete things that we repeat, I like how
- 7:14you have them spread out in multiple places, 'cause sometimes that's helpful.
- 7:17Like, no matter where I am, I'm gonna have the opportunity to look and see one.
- 7:22And-
- 7:23Speaker 3: That was, that was actually an interesting thing about COVID.
- 7:26We, we moved, sort of.
- 7:29Um, we went and stayed at our cabin because we could, which was wonderful.
- 7:34But I felt like I was spinning a bit out of control, and I finally
- 7:38looked around and went, "Oh, there's, there's no alignment cards."
- 7:42And so I printed one out and stuck it up by the bathroom mirror, and it
- 7:46was like, "Oh, that feels better."
- 7:47So it's funny, I, I rely on 'em in a way.
- 7:51And, you know, in a time when all of my systems, all of my routines, and
- 7:57even my environment were uprooted I needed that grounding to go back to.
- 8:02And even if, though I just printed out an old one I had made, it was
- 8:05enough to, uh, to ground things again.
- 8:08And then of course my kids notice it.
- 8:10That was about the time they got old enough to start noticing and reading
- 8:13things and telling me what they remember.
- 8:16So that has been another fruit of this.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:20Yeah.
- 8:21That's always neat.
- 8:22Mm-hmm.
- 8:23And then they're in multiple places.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 8:25And
- 8:26Speaker 2: how often do you, like, add a new one or change
- 8:30them up or move them around?
- 8:32I
- 8:33Speaker 3: don't tend to move them unless they fall down.
- 8:35Um, but um, I have one that's really faded right now, so I guess
- 8:39it's become a memory exercise.
- 8:41I have to stare at it and try and remember what it says, um,
- 8:45which is its own amusement.
- 8:47But generally I add them whenever something strikes me.
- 8:51So if I read a verse, you know, if I'm reading a Psalm and it strikes me, I
- 8:55write it out, um, you know, part of it.
- 8:57It, you know, there are bits from the various lessons that we do in,
- 9:01like, in, uh, Convivial Circle.
- 9:04Um, sometimes those strike me and I write 'em out.
- 9:06I've tried off and on for, to keep, like, a commonplace
- 9:09notebook, and it never sticks.
- 9:11But if I see something that strikes me and I write it and stick it on the
- 9:14wall, then that, uh, that's better.
- 9:18So yeah, it's just really whenever something hits me.
- 9:21And I have a few that my daughter has made for me.
- 9:23You know, I'm like, "Oh, I like that," and she sticks it up somewhere, so.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Nice.
- 9:27Speaker 3: You know, like Grandma had the coloring book of, uh, Bible verses,
- 9:31and so a few of those are on the wall.
- 9:33And she made me a "not all who wander are lost," uh, card.
- 9:37And
- 9:37Speaker 2: yeah,
- 9:38Speaker 3: it's, it's fun.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Becomes a family culture thing.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Yes, very much so.
- 9:43Which I guess I like to think that that, uh, redeems a little bit the culture
- 9:48that we also have of quoting movies.
- 9:49So it's like, okay, we can quote movies, but we can also quote
- 9:52book- books and Bible verses, so, you know, it balances out.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Do you think you're gonna run out of wall space then if you keep
- 9:58adding them, or you have new places?
- 10:00I
- 10:00Speaker 3: don't know.
- 10:02I mean, so far it's worked.
- 10:04I'm, again, I'm looking around the room going, "Well, you
- 10:06know, there's things there.
- 10:07There's thingâ¦"
- 10:08Now, at some point I'm guessing that my husband might like a little less
- 10:11visual clutter, but, uh, he's a blank wall kind of person, so we'll see.
- 10:16I, I may have to adjust my ways, but, uh, so far I've
- 10:20been able to keep it reined in.
- 10:23They do end up a little bit topical, like the ones that are next to my
- 10:27bed are a bit like the lying down in safety or the, uh, you know,
- 10:33waking up and, you know, appreciating what a privilege it is to be alive.
- 10:38You know, those kinds of, you know, things.
- 10:41The, the love and faithfulness.
- 10:43And that's also where I've stuck my vocation statements because then when
- 10:46I, you know, when I pause there, I'm, like, putting on my shoes, I'm like,
- 10:49"Oh, yeah, that's what we're doing."
- 10:51So those things help.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Yep.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:54Finding those ways just to keep, to look at what we've written
- 10:58down and to have those- Mm-hmm
- 11:00reminders of all kinds.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 11:02Speaker 2: If you were talking to someone who was reluctant to get started,
- 11:08what would you encourage them to do?
- 11:11Speaker 3: Hmm.
- 11:12I don't know.
- 11:13I mean, just start is the easiest one.
- 11:15But think ofâ¦
- 11:17I mean, think of something that's helped you, be it a song lyric or a time that
- 11:23someone, um, you know, said something to you or, like, say something you
- 11:27read in a book or got from a lesson.
- 11:30I've heard people say that they're kind of embarrassed to put it up, and it's like,
- 11:34I don't know, putting up a Bible verse.
- 11:36I mean, especially if it's somewhere like where you brush your teeth.
- 11:39How many people are paying attention to, you know, what's in your bathroom?
- 11:43I've had a couple I put inside the cupboard.
- 11:45I'm like, "You know, I'm just gonna put this on the inside of the
- 11:48cupboard door," and then, no, it's not really always there, but it's there.
- 11:52And those help.
- 11:53So, you know, find a place that you feel comfortable with it and
- 11:57find a place that you see it.
- 11:58Maybe it's just on your phone lock screen or something.
- 12:01But any, any bit helps.
- 12:04Any time we can, I don't know, add a little truth to, to combat
- 12:08what's out there, that helps.
- 12:10Speaker 2: How long would you say it has taken for, like, p- a particular alignment
- 12:15card to, like, pop to mind at other times?
- 12:21Like, that kind of review, 'cause it's not instant.
- 12:25They can be- No ⦠out for a while.
- 12:27Speaker 3: There are a few that I seem to have, you know, memorized quickly.
- 12:31I mean, And there are a few that I don't really come to mind, but when I
- 12:35read them, they're, you know, they fit.
- 12:38So I don't know.
- 12:39It's hard to say.
- 12:40And sometimes I just remember a bit of it.
- 12:42I'm like, "Oh yeah, that poem," you know?
- 12:44And you remember a- enough to go remind you, yes, do it immediately.
- 12:48Okay, got it.
- 12:49Or rejoice always.
- 12:50You don't always have to recite the whole thing to, like, hang
- 12:55up on it and, uh, remember.
- 12:58Speaker 2: That's true.
- 13:00Yeah.
- 13:00Even just a fragment
- 13:01Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 13:02Yeah.
- 13:03Just a little bit will help.
- 13:05Yeah.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Do you have, what, do you have a, a single favorite alignment card?
- 13:10Speaker 3: Well, the one I use the most is the Elizabeth Elliot, "The
- 13:13secret is Christ in me, not me in a different set of circumstances."
- 13:17Which is funny because I copied it out and I stuck it in the book I was reading, and
- 13:22I found ⦠I didn't find it for a while.
- 13:24And and then I found it and hung it up.
- 13:27But it was, it was always came to the top of mind.
- 13:30Yeah.
- 13:30And as I mentioned earlier, like currently the thing that comes to
- 13:33mind is the song we sang about, uh, the Lord is my refuge and strength,
- 13:38um, an ever present help and trouble.
- 13:40And it's, you know, it's probably been a year or so since we sang
- 13:45that song, but it, it, you know, it just has been coming to mind, so.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 13:49Speaker 3: I just always take it as that's what I needed.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Having the external cards is helpful to give us
- 13:56something to latch onto visually.
- 13:58Yeah.
- 13:58And rethink those thoughts.
- 14:00But really anything like that that can direct our thinking so that we
- 14:06think good things and can direct our thoughts and change what we're thinking.
- 14:13Mm-hmm.
- 14:13So that, you know, sometimes our thoughts start wandering
- 14:16off into places they shouldn't.
- 14:17It's like anything, a song, something you've memorized.
- 14:22Right.
- 14:23Looking and reading words to get the good thoughts in your head.
- 14:27These are all things that we can do.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 14:31Yeah.
- 14:31The daily quotes help, too.
- 14:32Um, those are fun, the text messages.
- 14:35When you used to do the, like, short workshops and you'd send out quotes for,
- 14:39like, a month, I was like, "You know, I just subscribe to those forever."
- 14:42' Cause I like quotes.
- 14:44And then you had membership and it was like, oh, I can
- 14:46get quotes and conversation.
- 14:49So yes, I think I signed up the day I opened that email.
- 14:53Speaker 2: It was the quotes.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Well, 'cause you had both options.
- 14:56I was like, "Well, do I sign up for quotes or do I join a membership?"
- 14:59That's an unusual thing.
- 15:01Yeah.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Forgot about that.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:04So back at the beginning.
- 15:05And I was like, "Huh, well maybe I'll try it," and- ⦠obviously
- 15:09have never left, so.
- 15:11Yep.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Well, we appreciate having you in.
- 15:14Thank you so much for sharing.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 15:17Speaker: Like Sarah mentioned, inside Convivial Circle, you can sign up to
- 15:22get daily quotes texted right to you every morning, and that might be the
- 15:27best way to start an alignment card.
- 15:29If you haven't tried it yet this month and you just can't figure out where
- 15:33to get started, I will interrupt you every morning with a texted quote or
- 15:40Bible verse that will help you get your head in the right place and focused
- 15:45on good and true things every weekday.
- 15:49That's just one of the perks inside Convivial Circle, where we also have
- 15:53community support, courses, and so much more that will help you become a
