- 0:00Speaker 1: As we rapidly moved toward the.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Culmination of the Sermon on the Mount, We've come, as
- 0:07Speaker 2: we looked on last week, to this last section where
- 0:12Speaker 2: we see these four comparisons, or these four juxtapositions, if
- 0:17Speaker 2: you will, we come to this moment where Jesus actually
- 0:21Speaker 2: applies the Sermon on the Mount, where he brings his
- 0:25Speaker 2: message to a conclusion in a very pointed way, basically
- 0:32Speaker 2: calling for a response from his hearers. And in the
- 0:36Speaker 2: first of those four segments we saw on last week,
- 0:41Speaker 2: he calls his hearers to recognize these two roads. That
- 0:47Speaker 2: there are two entrances.
- 0:49Speaker 1: There is the broad gate and the narrow gate.
- 0:52Speaker 2: There are two paths, there is the easy path and
- 0:57Speaker 2: the difficult path. There are two crowds, the many and
- 1:01Speaker 2: the few. And there are two destinations. One leads to life,
- 1:06Speaker 2: the other leads to destruction. In these middle two sections,
- 1:11Speaker 2: they're actually combined, if you will. So we're going to
- 1:15Speaker 2: look at this week and then again on next week
- 1:19Speaker 2: the same group of individuals.
- 1:21Speaker 1: We've looked at.
- 1:23Speaker 2: These two groups of individuals, those who go in through
- 1:27Speaker 2: the narrow gate and those who go in through the broadgate.
- 1:31Speaker 2: We've looked at those who basically, in one sense, hear
- 1:34Speaker 2: the sermon on the mount, believe the sermon on the mount,
- 1:41Speaker 2: apply the sermon on the mount, are converted by this
- 1:45Speaker 2: message that they hear from Jesus.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And those on the other end who choose.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Another route, whether that route is something as far away
- 1:54Speaker 2: from Christ as imaginable, or whether that route is something
- 1:59Speaker 2: that is as close to the route that Christ prescribes
- 2:04Speaker 2: as possible without actually coming to repentance and faith.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Here we see that there's another.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Obstacle along the way, and that obstacle along the way
- 2:23Speaker 2: is false prophets. We'll see them in the next two
- 2:26Speaker 2: paragraphs false prophets. Today we look at the false prophets
- 2:32Speaker 2: and Jesus's illustration of the trees and the fruit, beginning
- 2:36Speaker 2: at verse fifteen. If you'll join me there Matthew Chapter seven,
- 2:39Speaker 2: verses fifteen through twenty, He says, beware of false prophets
- 2:47Speaker 2: who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are
- 2:50Speaker 2: ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Our
- 2:55Speaker 2: grapes gathered from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles. So
- 2:59Speaker 2: every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree
- 3:04Speaker 2: bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit,
- 3:08Speaker 2: nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree
- 3:12Speaker 2: that does not bear good fruit is cut down and
- 3:15Speaker 2: thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by
- 3:21Speaker 2: their fruit. Now, before we even begin, let me say
- 3:29Speaker 2: that we are allergic to the kind of teaching that
- 3:31Speaker 2: Jesus puts forth here in this passage. Our culture has
- 3:36Speaker 2: rendered us allergic to this kind of teaching that Jesus
- 3:40Speaker 2: puts forth in this passage. We'll talk more about our
- 3:44Speaker 2: allergy as we continue on here. But it makes us
- 3:49Speaker 2: very uncomfortable when we talk about this issue, because Jesus
- 3:53Speaker 2: identifies the fact that there are first and foremost false prophets.
- 4:00Speaker 2: There are false prophets. There are people who are out
- 4:04Speaker 2: there who are false prophets. There are those who speak
- 4:08Speaker 2: the truth, and there are those who tell lies. There
- 4:13Speaker 2: are false prophets. Listen to Da Carson as he puts
- 4:17Speaker 2: a finer point on it. Warnings against false prophets are
- 4:20Speaker 2: necessary or are necessarily based on the conviction that not
- 4:23Speaker 2: all prophets are true, that truth can be violated, and
- 4:28Speaker 2: that the Gospel's enemies usually conceal their hostility and try
- 4:33Speaker 2: to pass themselves off as fellow believers.
- 4:39Speaker 1: There are false prophets.
- 4:43Speaker 2: This is not new, by the way, listen to this,
- 4:45Speaker 2: just a few passages of scripture Matthew chapter twenty four
- 4:49Speaker 2: and verse eleven.
- 4:50Speaker 1: We read for.
- 4:51Speaker 2: False Christs and false prophets will arise and perform great
- 4:57Speaker 2: signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible,
- 5:01Speaker 2: even the elect Matthew, Chapter twenty four and verse twenty four.
- 5:06Speaker 2: For false Christ and false prophets will arise and perform
- 5:10Speaker 2: great side. I'm sorry, Matthew twenty four eleven. Many false
- 5:13Speaker 2: prophets will arise and lead Mini austrae what I read
- 5:15Speaker 2: to you the first time was Matthew twenty four twenty four.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Mark thirteen twenty two is a retelling of this teaching
- 5:23Speaker 2: of Christ, and in Luke chapter six and verse twenty six,
- 5:26Speaker 2: reach this way, woe to you when all people speak
- 5:29Speaker 2: well of you, For so their fathers did to the
- 5:33Speaker 2: false prophets Acts chapter thirteen and verse six. When they
- 5:39Speaker 2: had gone through the whole island as far as pay
- 5:42Speaker 2: false they came upon a certain magician, a Jewish false
- 5:47Speaker 2: prophet named bar Jesus, and then second Feeder Chapter two
- 5:52Speaker 2: in verse one, we read, but false prophets also arose
- 5:57Speaker 2: among the people, just as there will be false teachers
- 6:00Speaker 2: among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even
- 6:05Speaker 2: denying the master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.
- 6:11Speaker 2: So again, this is not an isolated incidence here in
- 6:15Speaker 2: the Sermon on the Mound. Jesus brings this up a
- 6:18Speaker 2: number of times in his ministry, and we also have
- 6:21Speaker 2: this in the Acts of the Apostles and in the Epistles.
- 6:25Speaker 2: The idea that there are false prophets. We have to
- 6:29Speaker 2: be aware of this fact, there are false prophets. The
- 6:33Speaker 2: second thing we need to know is this false prophets
- 6:35Speaker 2: are not always easy to spot. Notice what Jesus says here,
- 6:40Speaker 2: look with me, if you will again in verse fifteen,
- 6:42Speaker 2: beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing,
- 6:46Speaker 2: but inwardly are ravenous wolves. In other words, Jesus says
- 6:50Speaker 2: the first word he uses that beware, be alert, look carefully,
- 6:56Speaker 2: because there are false prophets, and these false prophets will
- 7:00Speaker 2: clothe themselves outwardly in the clothing of the sheeps, but
- 7:06Speaker 2: inwardly they are not. So Usually we think it's easy.
- 7:11Speaker 2: And by the way, that's not what we're allergic to
- 7:14Speaker 2: in our culture. We're not allergic to the false prophet.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Who's an obvious false prophet. Now, that's not what we're
- 7:21Speaker 2: We don't mind that at all. When someone stands up
- 7:24Speaker 2: and tells just blatant, ball faced lies, we have very
- 7:28Speaker 2: little problem saying, well, that's a false prophet. Or if
- 7:32Speaker 2: false prophets are doing horrendous things and hurting people and
- 7:35Speaker 2: manipulating people, you know, the Jim Joneses of the world,
- 7:39Speaker 2: we have no problem saying that's a false prophet.
- 7:41Speaker 1: But Jesus puts a finer point on it here.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Jesus says, beware of false prophets, not because they're going
- 7:49Speaker 2: to be easy to spot. They're going to be out
- 7:51Speaker 2: there for you to see and for all the world
- 7:53Speaker 2: to see, and you'll be able to know, hey, that's
- 7:56Speaker 2: a false prophet, dinging ding ding red flag. No, that
- 8:00Speaker 2: says you need to beware, you need to be on
- 8:03Speaker 2: the lookout because these individuals will dress themselves in the
- 8:07Speaker 2: uniform of my sheep, they will hide who they truly are.
- 8:16Speaker 2: They will learn to use narrow gate language, they will
- 8:23Speaker 2: learn to emulate hard road living. They will learn to
- 8:31Speaker 2: masquerade as small crowd people, and they will learn to
- 8:38Speaker 2: trick you into thinking that they are on the road
- 8:40Speaker 2: that leads to life, and yet they are false profits.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Here's why it's difficult for us to identify false profits.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Number one, because of biblical and theological literacy. That's our
- 9:02Speaker 2: first problem. Biblical and theological illiteracy. That makes it difficult
- 9:07Speaker 2: to identify false prophets. If we don't know the Bible,
- 9:10Speaker 2: if we don't know doctrine, if we don't know theology,
- 9:14Speaker 2: it is virtually impossible for us to identify false prophets.
- 9:18Speaker 2: That's also, by the way, why we're allergic to those
- 9:21Speaker 2: who identify false prophets. If we're allergic to it, we
- 9:25Speaker 2: really are.
- 9:26Speaker 1: We don't like it. It makes us uncomfortable.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Somebody's identifying an individual as a false prophet, and we
- 9:30Speaker 2: just kind of go, well, no, that person's not a
- 9:32Speaker 2: false prophet because they actually stand up and they use
- 9:35Speaker 2: Bible versus And of course if it was a false prophet,
- 9:39Speaker 2: they would stand up and use.
- 9:42Speaker 1: What the bagavad gita. Do you think you think that.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Would be a successful false prophet if he stood up
- 9:48Speaker 2: and didn't use Bible versus. No, of course they use
- 9:52Speaker 2: Bible versus. Of course they use narrow gate language. Of
- 9:57Speaker 2: course they do, and what they we do is prey
- 10:00Speaker 2: on individuals who are biblically and theologically illiterate. Secondly, as
- 10:05Speaker 2: difficult because of the prevalence of ecumenism and syncretism. As
- 10:14Speaker 2: a friend of mine calls it, Rodney King theology, Can't
- 10:18Speaker 2: we all just get along? The answer is a resounding no,
- 10:26Speaker 2: we cannot. What do light and darkness have to do
- 10:30Speaker 2: with one another? Can't we all just get along?
- 10:33Speaker 1: You know? The problem with can't we all just get
- 10:35Speaker 1: along is.
- 10:36Speaker 2: That it flies in the face of what Jesus just
- 10:39Speaker 2: said here, beware of false prophets. Yeah, I know, Jesus,
- 10:43Speaker 2: But can't we just all get along? No, I'm trying
- 10:45Speaker 2: to tell you they have sheep's clothing on on the outside,
- 10:48Speaker 2: but on the inside they're ravenous wolves. Yeah, Jesus, I know,
- 10:51Speaker 2: But really, wouldn't it be more like you to just
- 10:55Speaker 2: get along with them, regardless of the fact that they
- 10:58Speaker 2: are lying on you? Doctor and theologically? No, what he
- 11:04Speaker 2: said was beware, not go along and get along. He said, beware,
- 11:14Speaker 2: but we're allergic to that why because of this false
- 11:19Speaker 2: and dangerous notion that's somehow drawing a line in the
- 11:23Speaker 2: sand and saying this is true and that is not
- 11:26Speaker 2: is somehow unchristian. Because remember the new John three sixteen.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Remember the old John three sixteen is actually John three sixteen.
- 11:35Speaker 1: The new John three sixteen is Matthew seven to one.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Used to be that everybody knew the old John three sixteen.
- 11:40Speaker 2: You put John three sixteen up and everybody goes, yeah,
- 11:41Speaker 2: I know what that is.
- 11:43Speaker 1: You know. Now you put John three sixteen up and
- 11:46Speaker 1: people go, what is is? What is? What is that?
- 11:49Speaker 1: Of course they don't know the verse Matthew seven to one.
- 11:53Speaker 1: They don't know.
- 11:54Speaker 2: You know, if you put that number up, they would
- 11:55Speaker 2: have no idea. But if you just started it, judge
- 11:59Speaker 2: not lest you they could finish it lest you be judged.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Never seen a Bible a day in their life. But
- 12:06Speaker 2: if you start Matthew seven to one, trust me, they
- 12:10Speaker 2: will finish it. Here's what's interesting, Matthew seven to one.
- 12:17Speaker 2: If you just use a little logic, here comes just
- 12:21Speaker 2: before what we're reading. Now you figure that out. We're
- 12:27Speaker 2: in Matthew seven fifteen, which means Matthew seven to one
- 12:32Speaker 2: just came a very short fourteen verses earlier. And those
- 12:36Speaker 2: who would manipulate Matthew seven to one would have you
- 12:39Speaker 2: believe this that basically Jesus said in Matthew seven to
- 12:43Speaker 2: one that you should not judge under any circumstances. Therefore,
- 12:48Speaker 2: when we read Matthew seven fifteen, we have to understand.
- 12:51Speaker 1: It in the context of not ever judging. Beware, but
- 12:59Speaker 1: don't judge, yes, voting.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I was just wondering if I was gonna beware
- 13:10Speaker 2: and you know, watch really closely and discern if somebody
- 13:15Speaker 2: was true or false. I was just thinking, you know,
- 13:18Speaker 2: maybe that would kind of by definition, be judging. Give
- 13:28Speaker 2: that man a prize. Here's the other thing. Turn with me,
- 13:34Speaker 2: if you will, to Titus. Turn to the right with me,
- 13:37Speaker 2: if you will to Titus.
- 13:41Speaker 1: I quote this all the time, but I want you
- 13:44Speaker 1: to go and see.
- 13:45Speaker 2: It and touch it and feel it and taste it
- 13:47Speaker 2: and everything else, all right, And Titus chapter one. Just
- 13:51Speaker 2: turn there and look at that for a moment, if
- 13:53Speaker 2: you will. Titus chapter one. Because I get I get
- 14:00Speaker 2: letters from time to time and emails from time to
- 14:02Speaker 2: time with people who are upset with me. Because I
- 14:07Speaker 2: getify false profits from time to time, and usually basically
- 14:12Speaker 2: all I do is send them back this Titus.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Chapter one, verse nine. By the way, Titus Chapter.
- 14:18Speaker 2: One, beginning at verse five, we have the requirements for elders,
- 14:22Speaker 2: the Biblical requirements for elders. At the end of those requirements,
- 14:25Speaker 2: verse nine, he must hold firm to the trustworthy word
- 14:29Speaker 2: as taught, so that he may be able to give
- 14:32Speaker 2: instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who
- 14:37Speaker 2: contradict it. That's my job, description, folks, to no sound doctrine,
- 14:43Speaker 2: to teach sound doctrine, and to rebuke those who contradict
- 14:47Speaker 2: sound doctrine. That's my job. It's not a suggestion, it's
- 14:52Speaker 2: a command. And any pastor who is not rebuking unsound doctrine,
- 14:58Speaker 2: it's not doing his job. You can't say, man, you
- 15:05Speaker 2: ought to say ouch. Does that mean we have to
- 15:08Speaker 2: be mean and nasty to people? Sometimes?
- 15:13Speaker 1: No, usually not.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Back in our passage, back in our passage, by the way.
- 15:24Speaker 2: That's why it's difficult for us. Again, it's difficult for
- 15:27Speaker 2: us because false prophets are difficult to identify. They're there,
- 15:31Speaker 2: but they're difficult to identify. We're not just talking about
- 15:34Speaker 2: the obvious ones who are out there, Jesus says, these
- 15:38Speaker 2: are individuals who have clothed themselves.
- 15:44Speaker 1: In the garments of my sheep. My followers.
- 15:48Speaker 2: See, the false prophet that's the scary one is not
- 15:52Speaker 2: the one who is out there teaching doctrine that is
- 15:54Speaker 2: completely in opposition to biblical truth. No, the false prophet
- 15:59Speaker 2: who's the scary one is the one who has the
- 16:03Speaker 2: meat of a lie covered with the skin of the truth.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Listen to this.
- 16:17Speaker 2: John ten, verses three through five, because the third thing
- 16:23Speaker 2: we need to know as false prophets are not a
- 16:25Speaker 2: danger to the true Church.
- 16:28Speaker 1: To him, the gatekeeper opens the sheep.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name,
- 16:35Speaker 2: and he leaves them out.
- 16:36Speaker 1: When he has brought out all his own.
- 16:39Speaker 2: He goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for
- 16:43Speaker 2: they know his voice a stranger. They will not follow,
- 16:46Speaker 2: but they will flee from him, for they do not
- 16:49Speaker 2: know the voice of a stranger. Amen, do we need
- 16:55Speaker 2: to be on guard, Yes, but here's what you need
- 16:58Speaker 2: to know. True cheap follow the true shepherd, and they
- 17:03Speaker 2: do not follow the voice of a stranger. Yet false
- 17:08Speaker 2: prophets are still a danger. Why listen to what Jesus says.
- 17:14Speaker 2: First of all, the ammunition beware, beware, why beyond guard?
- 17:19Speaker 2: I mean, if there's no danger, why beyond guard? Secondly,
- 17:22Speaker 2: what does he call these individuals ravenous wolves? In other words,
- 17:26Speaker 2: they come to do much harm, like the thief who
- 17:28Speaker 2: comes to steal and to kill and to destroy. Here's
- 17:35Speaker 2: what you need to know. A false prophet is ultimately
- 17:39Speaker 2: not going to take a narrow gate, hard road, small
- 17:45Speaker 2: crowd on the way to life Christian and turn them
- 17:50Speaker 2: into a broad gate, easy road, big crowd on the
- 17:55Speaker 2: way to death, non Christian. We talked about that last week.
- 17:59Speaker 2: We talked about the perseverance of God's elect last week.
- 18:02Speaker 2: So that's not the danger. But here's what you need
- 18:05Speaker 2: to know. A believer can have his or her life
- 18:09Speaker 2: turned upside down by a false prophet. A believer who
- 18:15Speaker 2: knows God, loves God, and is following God can have
- 18:19Speaker 2: his or her life turned upside down by a slick
- 18:23Speaker 2: talking false prophet, sometimes for years. A false prophet can
- 18:29Speaker 2: have a true follower of Christ twisted and tied all
- 18:33Speaker 2: up in knots until they are ultimately delivered from the falsehood.
- 18:40Speaker 2: So don't you think for a moment that just because
- 18:44Speaker 2: you're a follower of Christ, just because you've been born again,
- 18:47Speaker 2: that you don't need to be careful about what you
- 18:49Speaker 2: listen to, and that there is no danger of listening
- 18:53Speaker 2: to false prophets. There is a danger, and they can
- 18:58Speaker 2: do you and your family much much harm. That's one
- 19:04Speaker 2: of the reasons that God has given elders to the
- 19:06Speaker 2: church to protect the doctrine of the church, to protect
- 19:11Speaker 2: the teaching of the church, to refute false teaching that
- 19:15Speaker 2: would come in and impose itself on the church. That's
- 19:19Speaker 2: one of the reasons that God gave the office of
- 19:22Speaker 2: elder to protect the body, especially in those circumstances. Because
- 19:27Speaker 2: there are people out there who look good, who sound good.
- 19:31Speaker 2: They're on Christian radio, they're on Christian television. Some of
- 19:34Speaker 2: them have household names and are best selling Christian authors,
- 19:41Speaker 2: and their revenous wolves. What do they do? False prophets
- 19:52Speaker 2: bear bad fruit, and they bear bad fruit in two
- 19:55Speaker 2: main ways, bad teaching, bad living.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Bad teaching bad living.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Look at what Jesus says again, you will recognize them
- 20:08Speaker 2: by their fruits. Outwardly, they may look really good, but
- 20:13Speaker 2: you need to become a pretty good fruit. Inspector. You
- 20:18Speaker 2: will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from
- 20:22Speaker 2: thorn bushes or figs from thistles. So every healthy tree
- 20:27Speaker 2: bears good fruit, but disease trees bear bad fruit. A
- 20:31Speaker 2: healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a disease
- 20:34Speaker 2: tree bear good fruit.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Can't happen that way. What do you do? Examine the fruit.
- 20:40Speaker 2: That's our responsibility as believers. Examine the fruit. Here's what
- 20:44Speaker 2: I want you to see. The first fruit is bad
- 20:46Speaker 2: teaching in Deuteronomy chapter eighteen. I just had to read
- 20:50Speaker 2: this for you. Listen to this in Deuteronomy chapter eighteen,
- 20:52Speaker 2: twenty three, twenty two. But the prophet who presumes to
- 20:55Speaker 2: speak a word and my name that I have not
- 20:58Speaker 2: commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name
- 21:01Speaker 2: of other gods, that same prophet shall die. And if
- 21:05Speaker 2: you say in your heart, how may we know the
- 21:08Speaker 2: word that the Lord has not spoken? By the way,
- 21:11Speaker 2: as New Testament believers, we have an advantage over those
- 21:15Speaker 2: to whom Moses was speaking. The advantage that we have
- 21:19Speaker 2: is we have God's word. So God, who in times
- 21:24Speaker 2: past spoke to the prophets and the fathers.
- 21:27Speaker 1: In many portions and in many ways in these last.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Days, has spoken to us in his son, through whom
- 21:34Speaker 2: he made the world.
- 21:35Speaker 1: So understand this.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Though we're reading here in Deuteronomy individuals who did not
- 21:39Speaker 2: have a completed canon, We however, do have a completed canon,
- 21:44Speaker 2: so we have a different set of criteria. So as
- 21:48Speaker 2: I read this, and I was playing that more in
- 21:49Speaker 2: a moment. But listen to this, how do we know?
- 21:51Speaker 2: How are you going to know that this person hasn't
- 21:53Speaker 2: spoken from me? When a prophet speaks in the name
- 21:56Speaker 2: of the Lord, if the word does not come to
- 21:58Speaker 2: pass or come true, that is a word that the
- 22:01Speaker 2: Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken presumptuously, you
- 22:05Speaker 2: need not fear him.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Does what he say come to pass?
- 22:14Speaker 2: That's the test Moses gives the people of Israel. Moses says, hey,
- 22:19Speaker 2: if you're wondering whether someone is a false prophet or not,
- 22:23Speaker 2: it's very easy. You just ask yourself this question. Did
- 22:27Speaker 2: what they said was going to come to pass actually
- 22:30Speaker 2: come to pass?
- 22:32Speaker 1: But remember I just.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Told you according to Hebrews Chapter one, verses one and two,
- 22:36Speaker 2: that's no longer our test. Our test is does what
- 22:41Speaker 2: he said come from and line up with the Bible.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Amen.
- 22:49Speaker 2: See, our Bibles are bound in leather, not three ring binders, folks,
- 22:53Speaker 2: And that's for a reason we are not in the
- 22:56Speaker 2: process of getting continued revelation from God.
- 23:03Speaker 1: So the first sign of a false.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Prophet is he speaks things as though they are from God,
- 23:08Speaker 2: but they're not found in God's word. He speaks things
- 23:14Speaker 2: as though they are from God, but they are not
- 23:16Speaker 2: found in God's word. We've talked about this before, but
- 23:20Speaker 2: I have to take a moment to do it again.
- 23:23Speaker 2: I beseech you, I begs you before from this very spot,
- 23:28Speaker 2: but I'm going to beg you again from this very
- 23:31Speaker 2: spot to be very careful and to stop using language
- 23:35Speaker 2: like God said, God told me, and God spoke to me.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Don't talk like that. That's heretical language, people, because when
- 23:46Speaker 2: you use words like said, spoke, and told, you are
- 23:50Speaker 2: referring to audible speech, and you are equating whatever comes
- 23:53Speaker 2: after that with what we have in the Word of God.
- 23:57Speaker 1: And that's heresy. What we usually mean is God enlightened me.
- 24:06Speaker 2: God brought something to my understanding, God impressed upon me.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Use those words all you want, but do not say
- 24:15Speaker 2: God said, God told me, or God spoke to me,
- 24:19Speaker 2: because if you do, you are out of line Theologically.
- 24:23Speaker 2: That is unbiblical speech, because God does not say. God
- 24:28Speaker 2: does not speak, God does not tell in those terms anymore.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Not because I say soul, but because the Bible says so,
- 24:38Speaker 2: we have a closed canon. So one of the ways
- 24:43Speaker 2: that you know that someone is potentially a ravenous wolf. Again,
- 24:47Speaker 2: there are individuals who just speak these kind of things
- 24:50Speaker 2: and they don't mean it. It just sort of comes
- 24:52Speaker 2: out because we're so used to hearing it in our culture,
- 24:55Speaker 2: and we'll say things like God told me this, God
- 24:57Speaker 2: said that God spoke this, and we'll say it, and
- 25:00Speaker 2: that's not what we mean. That's not what I'm talking about.
- 25:03Speaker 2: That's somebody who just needs to be corrected. And you
- 25:07Speaker 2: and I, both all of us in this room, are
- 25:09Speaker 2: more than likely guilty of having been loose with our
- 25:12Speaker 2: speech in that way before. We did not mean I
- 25:16Speaker 2: am speaking to you with the same authority as Moses
- 25:20Speaker 2: or Paul or Jesus.
- 25:22Speaker 1: That's not what we meant. We were just loose with
- 25:25Speaker 1: our speech.
- 25:26Speaker 2: We adopted a bad habit from our culture, and that's
- 25:29Speaker 2: not what we meant.
- 25:29Speaker 1: But there are individuals in.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Our culture who say those things and mean them.
- 25:35Speaker 1: They're false prophets. They're false prophets.
- 25:42Speaker 2: According to Hebrews Chapter one, verses one and two, they
- 25:46Speaker 2: are false prophets.
- 25:52Speaker 1: That just sounds so judgmental. Welcome to the narrow gate.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Not only do we have false teaching like that, but
- 26:06Speaker 2: we also have false teaching just like the stuff that
- 26:08Speaker 2: we found. For example, they're in Deuteronomy, people making predictions
- 26:12Speaker 2: that just don't come to pass. For example, probably the
- 26:15Speaker 2: most famous Edgar Weasenant. Anybody know that name, Edgar Reasonet.
- 26:21Speaker 2: If you know that name, you probably know that name
- 26:23Speaker 2: because of one of the most notorious Christian books ever published,
- 26:26Speaker 2: eighty eight Reasons that the Rapture Will Come in nineteen
- 26:29Speaker 2: eighty eight.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Anybody we're familiar with that title.
- 26:34Speaker 2: It was a best seller, solover million copies, eighty eight
- 26:37Speaker 2: Reasons the Rapture Will Come in nineteen eighty eight. How
- 26:41Speaker 2: many of you know he wasn't thrown out on his
- 26:43Speaker 2: ear in nineteen eighty nine, but yet still had a
- 26:46Speaker 2: ministry and still published.
- 26:50Speaker 1: False prophet. Ellen G.
- 26:53Speaker 2: White predicted that the world was going to end in
- 26:56Speaker 2: ninth in EMSCU the eighteen forty three eighteen forty four
- 27:00Speaker 2: and eighteen fifty one. Here's what's amazing. By eighteen fifty one,
- 27:05Speaker 2: people were still listening. And who can forget the First
- 27:11Speaker 2: Gulf War when TBN was filled with false prophets basically saying, folks,
- 27:18Speaker 2: this is the battle of Armageddon. Babylon has arisen again.
- 27:25Speaker 2: In fact, they would tell hey things like you know,
- 27:27Speaker 2: Sadim Hussein thinks of himself as the recoming.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Of Nemica Nether, this is that. How about all the
- 27:36Speaker 1: y two keg crazy? This is it.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Go get all your stuff and get ready. It's over.
- 27:46Speaker 2: The clock's going to strike midnight nineteen ninety nine, and
- 27:52Speaker 2: at next second will be the end of the world
- 27:57Speaker 2: as you know it. Get your stuff and get ready.
- 28:03Speaker 2: False prophets everyone, everyone, Okay, not only is there the
- 28:11Speaker 2: bad teaching, but there's also the bad living. Look with
- 28:15Speaker 2: me if you will, and this is an well it's
- 28:18Speaker 2: not that extensive a passage, but look with me at
- 28:21Speaker 2: Second Timothy chapter three. We can't talk about this and
- 28:25Speaker 2: not read Second Timothy chapter three. It would be criminal
- 28:29Speaker 2: not to read Second Timothy chapter three. Look with me
- 28:32Speaker 2: if you will. Second Timothy chapter three really almost the
- 28:41Speaker 2: whole chapter, not almost the whole chapter we do. We
- 28:44Speaker 2: have to read the whole chapter.
- 28:45Speaker 1: We just have to, Okay, second timenty, chapter three.
- 28:49Speaker 2: But understand this that in the last days there will
- 28:52Speaker 2: come times of difficulty. Now here's what you need to know, Okay,
- 28:58Speaker 2: from a theological hermonutical perspective. When he uses this term,
- 29:03Speaker 2: just like when the author of Hebrews uses the term
- 29:05Speaker 2: in Hebrews chapter one. When he uses this term in
- 29:08Speaker 2: the last days, what he's referring to is the time
- 29:11Speaker 2: between the first coming or advent of Jesus Christ and
- 29:15Speaker 2: the consummation of all things. So when he says in
- 29:17Speaker 2: the last days, he doesn't mean, you know, when it's
- 29:20Speaker 2: really close to the time of the rapture.
- 29:22Speaker 1: That's not what he's saying.
- 29:24Speaker 2: This term when we read it in the New Testament,
- 29:26Speaker 2: when we read it from the author of Hebrews, and
- 29:29Speaker 2: we read it from Paul and others in the New Testament, again,
- 29:32Speaker 2: he's not like he's talking about the last day, different
- 29:35Speaker 2: term altogether. When he says in the last days, here
- 29:38Speaker 2: he's referring to that intermittent period between the first coming
- 29:41Speaker 2: of Christ and the consummation of all things when he
- 29:44Speaker 2: comes again.
- 29:45Speaker 1: But know this that in the last days.
- 29:47Speaker 2: There will come times of difficulty, for people will be
- 29:50Speaker 2: lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedience
- 29:53Speaker 2: to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self control, brutal,
- 30:01Speaker 2: not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of
- 30:05Speaker 2: pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of
- 30:08Speaker 2: godliness but denying its power. Avoid such people, stay away
- 30:14Speaker 2: from such people. Well, that sounds so judgmental. Welcome to
- 30:21Speaker 2: the narrow gate. For among them are those who creep
- 30:26Speaker 2: into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and
- 30:31Speaker 2: led astray by various passions, always learning and never able
- 30:34Speaker 2: to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. Just as
- 30:38Speaker 2: Jenison Jambers opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. Wow,
- 30:49Speaker 2: they're disqualified regarding the faith. That's more judgmental. But they
- 30:56Speaker 2: will not go very far, for their folly will be
- 30:59Speaker 2: plain to all, as was that of those two men.
- 31:02Speaker 1: You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct.
- 31:06Speaker 2: My aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love,
- 31:09Speaker 2: my steadfastness, my persecutions and suffering that happened to me
- 31:13Speaker 2: at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra, which persecutions I endured,
- 31:17Speaker 2: Yet from all of them the Lord rescued me.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Here's what's interesting.
- 31:20Speaker 2: You remember last week we talked about that term that
- 31:24Speaker 2: comes after the narrow gate, that term for the way.
- 31:28Speaker 1: It says, the way is hard.
- 31:30Speaker 2: Remember I told you last week that the word used
- 31:32Speaker 2: there in the Greek is the word from which we
- 31:34Speaker 2: get the word persecutions.
- 31:37Speaker 1: So in essence, Jesus was saying, one of the evidences
- 31:41Speaker 1: that you.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Are a narrow gate, hard road Christian is persecutions. Here
- 31:48Speaker 2: Paul is saying to Timothy, you know those liars, those
- 31:53Speaker 2: liars are not like me. And one of the ways
- 31:56Speaker 2: is they're not like me. Paul says, what you know,
- 32:00Speaker 2: my persecutions. You've seen evidence of my narrow gait, hard road,
- 32:08Speaker 2: few friends life. And that's one of the distinctions, Paul says,
- 32:15Speaker 2: between himself and the false prophets. Listen to the other,
- 32:19Speaker 2: thank you so much. Listen to the rest of this. Indeed,
- 32:24Speaker 2: verse twelve, all who desire to live godly life in
- 32:27Speaker 2: Christ Jesus will be persecuted, not might, not, could, but
- 32:32Speaker 2: will while evil people and impostors will go from bad
- 32:37Speaker 2: to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you,
- 32:41Speaker 2: continuing what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing
- 32:44Speaker 2: from whom you've learned it, and how from childhood you
- 32:48Speaker 2: have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able
- 32:51Speaker 2: to make you wise for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
- 32:55Speaker 2: All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, rebuke, direction,
- 33:01Speaker 2: for training in righteousness, that the man of God may
- 33:03Speaker 2: be competent, equipped for every good work. What does Paul
- 33:09Speaker 2: tell Timothy You're okay because you got the scriptures? Two
- 33:15Speaker 2: distinctions between the true prophet and the false prophet.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Number one, they're teaching Number two their life.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Look at the fruit, Look at the fruit of what
- 33:29Speaker 2: they teach, Look at the fruit of how they live.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Does what they teach line up with what the scriptures say?
- 33:35Speaker 2: Does how they live line up with what the scriptures say?
- 33:38Speaker 2: By the way, and if we're looking for the way
- 33:40Speaker 2: that they live, where would we look again? Think about
- 33:43Speaker 2: the sermon that Jesus is preaching, don't disconnect it. Where
- 33:47Speaker 2: do we go to find the kind of lifestyle that
- 33:49Speaker 2: Jesus is talking about. How about all the way back
- 33:51Speaker 2: to chapter five and verse one, the beginning of the
- 33:53Speaker 2: Sermon on the Mound. He lays out for us what
- 33:56Speaker 2: the kingdom lifestyle is like, what we're looking for. Go
- 34:01Speaker 2: back to the beatitudes, Go back to the sixth antitheses,
- 34:07Speaker 2: Go back to chapter six. True prayer, true fasting, true giving.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Go back and look at the true religion of Christianity
- 34:16Speaker 2: as Jesus has already laid it out in chapter five,
- 34:19Speaker 2: chapter six, and the beginning of chapter seven, and you
- 34:22Speaker 2: have the kind of fruit for which.
- 34:25Speaker 1: We are called to look.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Finally, none of this matters if we're not ready and
- 34:34Speaker 2: willing to test and judge. None of this matters if
- 34:40Speaker 2: we're not ready and willing to test and to judge.
- 34:45Speaker 2: It's meaningless if we're unwilling to test and to judge.
- 34:50Speaker 1: By the way, why do I say judge?
- 34:53Speaker 2: The last phrase that Jesus uses is very important this
- 34:57Speaker 2: week and next week. The last phrase he users in
- 35:00Speaker 2: this paragraph is the tree that doesn't bear good fruit,
- 35:04Speaker 2: it's gonna be cut down and thrown into the fire.
- 35:10Speaker 1: That's what you call judgment.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Next week we'll hear depart from me, I never knew you,
- 35:20Speaker 2: you worker of iniquity, you practicer of lawlessness. See, none
- 35:27Speaker 2: of this matters if basically we don't believe that we're
- 35:31Speaker 2: supposed to test, we don't believe that we're supposed to
- 35:34Speaker 2: make judgments. Again, I'm not talking about being judgmental. Go
- 35:37Speaker 2: back to the messages on the early part of chapter seven.
- 35:40Speaker 2: All right, we're not talking about turning your nose up
- 35:44Speaker 2: at individuals who don't like the things that you like,
- 35:47Speaker 2: who don't agree with you on non essentials. That's not
- 35:50Speaker 2: what we're talking about here. We're talking about false profits
- 35:57Speaker 2: and identifying false profits are destructive in the life of
- 36:02Speaker 2: the church. And if all we believe that we're supposed
- 36:07Speaker 2: to do is read this for reading's sake and not
- 36:14Speaker 2: apply it, and not exercise sound judgment, and not distance
- 36:19Speaker 2: ourselves from false teaching, and not expose false teaching whenever we.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Find it, then we'll have a problem. Listen to this
- 36:26Speaker 1: if you will.
- 36:28Speaker 2: First John four, verses one through three, Beloved, do not
- 36:33Speaker 2: believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether
- 36:37Speaker 2: they are from God. For many false prophets have gone
- 36:40Speaker 2: out into the world. By this, you will know the
- 36:42Speaker 2: spirit of God. Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ
- 36:45Speaker 2: is come in the flesh is from God. And every
- 36:47Speaker 2: spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God.
- 36:50Speaker 2: This is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you heard
- 36:53Speaker 2: was coming and is now in the world already. Again,
- 36:57Speaker 2: is this the only test? No, it's not the only test.
- 37:00Speaker 2: Remember the series we did through First John. There are
- 37:02Speaker 2: many tests, But here dealing with false prophets, he says,
- 37:06Speaker 2: test what you hear from them, Test the spirits by
- 37:09Speaker 2: the spirits. This is judgment, folks, and it's the way
- 37:14Speaker 2: Christians are commanded to live. Look with me, if you
- 37:17Speaker 2: will have acts. Chapter seventeen, Verses ten and eleven. The
- 37:23Speaker 2: brothers immediately sent Paul in sil Us away by night
- 37:26Speaker 2: to Maria, And when they arrived, they went into the
- 37:29Speaker 2: Jewish synagogue. Now these Jews were more noble than those
- 37:33Speaker 2: in Thessalonika. How about that these Jews were more noble
- 37:39Speaker 2: than those in Thessalonika. What pray tell made them more
- 37:43Speaker 2: noble than the Jews in Thessalonika.
- 37:45Speaker 1: Glad you asked?
- 37:47Speaker 2: They received the Word with all eagerness, examining the scriptures
- 37:52Speaker 2: daily to see if these things were sold folks, this
- 37:55Speaker 2: is the Apostle Paul. Follow this, This is the Apostle Paul.
- 38:03Speaker 2: This guy comes into town and he's been bitten by
- 38:07Speaker 2: serpents and lived. This guy has a man listening to him.
- 38:13Speaker 2: One night, falls out of a window and dies raised
- 38:17Speaker 2: him back to life. He comes to Beria and they say,
- 38:23Speaker 2: all that's fine and good, but here's what we're gonna do.
- 38:27Speaker 2: We're gonna take what you said today and we're gonna
- 38:30Speaker 2: go back and look in our bibles. We're gonna search
- 38:33Speaker 2: the scriptures to see if what you're saying is actually
- 38:37Speaker 2: true when the Bible says that made them more noble?
- 38:49Speaker 2: Do you test what you hear? Even from here, from
- 38:56Speaker 2: this place we're far from him infallible, folks, we are.
- 39:03Speaker 2: Do you test what you hear? That's one of the
- 39:08Speaker 2: reasons that we teach the way we do. That's one
- 39:10Speaker 2: of the reasons that we come and bring your bible.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Open your bible, look in your bible, read it, touch it,
- 39:16Speaker 2: taste it, see it, because we want you to develop
- 39:23Speaker 2: the habit.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Of testing what you hear. Don't you dare trust me?
- 39:33Speaker 1: You trust the word?
- 39:38Speaker 2: I am a frail, fragile, wounded, broken, messed up individual.
- 39:53Speaker 2: By the way, welcome to the club, because that's what
- 39:59Speaker 2: every one of us is. And as such, we've got
- 40:04Speaker 2: to have something more than just the power of our
- 40:07Speaker 2: own persuasion and personality. We have to test everything by
- 40:13Speaker 2: the word, test everything by God's truth, test everything by
- 40:21Speaker 2: what's been spoken.
- 40:25Speaker 1: Here's what's said.
- 40:27Speaker 2: I've actually had this seen with my own eyes in churches,
- 40:35Speaker 2: disagreements about certain things, or disagreements about you know, what's
- 40:39Speaker 2: going on here, what's going on there?
- 40:41Speaker 1: See it with my own eyes, hurt it with my
- 40:43Speaker 1: own ears.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you keep opening that Bible, you keep reading those verses.
- 40:50Speaker 2: I really don't care what those verses say. I've heard
- 40:59Speaker 2: that from people who've been in church for years, for years.
- 41:12Speaker 2: We got to be like the Bereans. We must test
- 41:16Speaker 2: everything according to the scriptures, and we must be ready
- 41:22Speaker 2: and willing always to identify, expose, and flee from false prophets.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Don't like the way that sounds. Turn with me to
- 41:34Speaker 2: one more passage. Look at Ephesians.
- 41:48Speaker 1: Chapter five and beginning in verse six.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Ephesians chapter five, let no one deceive you with empty words,
- 42:15Speaker 2: for because of these things, the wrath of God comes
- 42:18Speaker 2: upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore, do not become partners
- 42:23Speaker 2: with them. For at one time you were darkness, but
- 42:28Speaker 2: now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children
- 42:31Speaker 2: of light, for the fruit of light is found in
- 42:35Speaker 2: all that is good and right and true. And try
- 42:38Speaker 2: to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no
- 42:41Speaker 2: part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.
- 42:49Speaker 2: For it is shameful even to speak of the things
- 42:51Speaker 2: that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed
- 42:55Speaker 2: by the light, it becomes visible. For anything that becomes
- 42:58Speaker 2: visible is light. For it says, awake, old sleeper, and
- 43:02Speaker 2: arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Our culture says, that's mean and nasty, that's judgmental, that's
- 43:17Speaker 2: not Christian. The Bible says, test the spirits, beware of
- 43:28Speaker 2: false prophets, expose the deeds of darkness, refute those who
- 43:37Speaker 2: contradict sound teaching. And now I will expose myself as
- 43:43Speaker 2: a liar, because there's one more passage of scripture. And
- 43:47Speaker 2: I said that was the last one. But I already
- 43:49Speaker 2: told you that I am awake and frail and fragile individual.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Jude. Jude gives us this.
- 44:01Speaker 2: It says, while I was making every effort to write
- 44:04Speaker 2: you concerning our common salvation, I felt the need to
- 44:08Speaker 2: write you and urge you to contend earnestly for the faith.
- 44:14Speaker 2: To eti agonid zami, to agonize greatly, to wrestle. The
- 44:19Speaker 2: term is used in classical Greek for wrestlers who are
- 44:22Speaker 2: engaged in combat. He says, I want you to engage
- 44:25Speaker 2: in combat, to agonize greatly the faith that was once
- 44:28Speaker 2: for all handed down to the saints. Why because certain
- 44:32Speaker 2: persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand
- 44:36Speaker 2: marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who do two things.
- 44:40Speaker 2: One turn the grace of God into lawlessness. That's bad living.
- 44:44Speaker 2: And number two, deny our only Master and Lord Jesus Christ.
- 44:48Speaker 2: That's bad teaching. Jude says, agonized greatly against false teachers.
- 45:01Speaker 2: War with them, those who turn grace into lawlessness, and
- 45:07Speaker 2: those who deny the essential truths of the Gospel. Agonize
- 45:12Speaker 2: greatly in that field of combat, Wage war in that
- 45:16Speaker 2: field of combat, refute those who contradict, expose their dark deeds,
- 45:24Speaker 2: and hold firmly to that which is true. Why because
- 45:31Speaker 2: we delight in the combat. No, because we delight in
- 45:36Speaker 2: the truth, and there is a major difference between those two.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Let us delight in the truth and beware of false prophets,
- 45:48Speaker 2: and when you find them, show them much love, but
- 45:54Speaker 2: no quarter as
