- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Why does writing feel so hard to a lot of people?
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: It's because their expectation doesn't match the reality of how good writing is actually created.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Many people have this idea of sitting down at a computer and just letting the words flow out perfectly.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: The heavens open up, birds are singing outside, and a heavenly ray of light descends from above as they post their work, they email it, or they send it off to an editor.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: The reviews on Amazon are stunning.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: It's 100% five-star reviews.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: People on social media are congratulating you.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: They love your work.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: They're hitting the like button or that subscribe button.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: They're going to your email list and all is right with the world.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Well, as we know, that's pretty much a fantasy.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: That's not how good writing actually gets done.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Writing is like mowing your lawn with a push mower.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: It's a lot of manual labor.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: It's pretty monotonous.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: You've got to go back and get the spots you missed, and you get kind of messy and dirty in the process.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: While you're mowing your lawn, you get sweaty, you're getting dirty, you're getting grass stuck on you, you're you're moving the sticks out of the way.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: You're you're in the muck and the mire of actually cutting your grass.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: But when you're done, you can stand back and you can take a look at your perfectly mowed lawn and you can appreciate all your hard work.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: And I think that good writing happens the same way.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: It's created just through a bunch of hard work.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: It's created through persistence, through doing multiple drafts, through editing and through finishing what you started.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: This is how professionals work.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: And it's how you have to work too.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: It's not going to be magic.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: You don't just wave your wand and the words magically flow.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Man, I wish that were true.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Life would be so much easier, wouldn't it?
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: But it's just simply a lot of hard work.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: This is how good books get written.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: People sit down and they just commit to doing the work.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: They commit to doing multiple drafts, pushing through that first draft, combating the uncertainty of how you of how it might turn out, because you don't ever really know how people are going to receive your work until you publish it.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: It's just sitting down and doing the work.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: This is how professionals work and it's how good writing happens.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: So if you're wrestling today, I just want to encourage you to just stick with it.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Don't get discouraged or bothered by getting sweaty, by getting dirty, by getting down there in the muck and the mire of the words, because this is how it actually gets done.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: It's how professionals work, and it's how you and I have to work as well.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question Do you want to write badly enough that you're willing to endure the messiness of writing in order to get to that wonderful final draft?
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Think about that.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: And I will see you in tomorrow's episode.
