Latest / Stuff Mom Never Told You / SMNTY Classics: The Animals Are Gay?!
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Anny and Samantha and welcome to stuff
- 0:08Speaker 1: I never told you productive I Heeartdio And for today's classic,
- 0:20Speaker 1: we are bringing back a happy Hour we did a
- 0:23Speaker 1: year or so ago about animals being gay, because this
- 0:29Speaker 1: wasn't a thing that I would hear, specifically from a
- 0:33Speaker 1: neighbor of mine when I was growing up, and they
- 0:37Speaker 1: used it as an argument against LGBTQ plus people. The
- 0:42Speaker 1: reason it's been on my mind is not only because
- 0:44Speaker 1: it's Pride month, Happy Pride Month, but I tried to
- 0:49Speaker 1: put together a short episode about how conservative media is
- 0:56Speaker 1: now portraying certain foods is gay, which is not new,
- 1:02Speaker 1: but they very recently on Fox News had a piece
- 1:06Speaker 1: where one of the anchors was like, I was gonna
- 1:10Speaker 1: do fudge, but it's too gay in terms of cake,
- 1:14Speaker 1: and I was just like the mere fact that you
- 1:17Speaker 1: saw that, actually.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Hmm. But anyway, also you don't deserve fudge then.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Exactly, Like, it's so frustrating because even having a conversation
- 1:31Speaker 1: about that is playing into these tropes. But also clearly
- 1:38Speaker 1: there are these things we have made. We have gendered,
- 1:42Speaker 1: which we have talked about for on the show, but
- 1:44Speaker 1: also we've made quote gay that don't that doesn't need
- 1:49Speaker 1: to be a thing. That's just not what we need
- 1:51Speaker 1: to be doing. But it reminded me of this conversation
- 1:55Speaker 1: about right about the animals are gay. Oh, we do
- 2:00Speaker 1: have a follow up classic coming where a listener wrote
- 2:05Speaker 1: in with I think of a very important point, not
- 2:10Speaker 1: a counterpoint necessarily, but like kind of the opposite of
- 2:13Speaker 1: the argument I was making in this one, So please
- 2:16Speaker 1: listen out for that. But in the meantime, please enjoy
- 2:20Speaker 1: this classic episode.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Hey, this is Annie and Samantha.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I welcome to stuff I never told you protection of iHeartRadio,
- 2:40Speaker 1: and today welcome to another edition of Happy Hour. As always,
- 2:45Speaker 1: if you are drinking or whatever you're doing, please do
- 2:48Speaker 1: so responsibly. Are you sipping on anything, Samantha.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I am sticking with my water because I have decided
- 2:54Speaker 2: I've been dehydrated and need more of that in my life.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Hydration not dehydration.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I was the I don't know listeners have heard
- 3:05Speaker 1: about this, but the city of Atlanta had a major
- 3:08Speaker 1: water issue, a lot of water rain breaks, and I
- 3:12Speaker 1: was in it, and it was it was funny because
- 3:17Speaker 1: I have so many issues at my apartment, which, by
- 3:19Speaker 1: the way, I need to update you Samantha on my
- 3:21Speaker 1: car drama because.
- 3:22Speaker 2: There is more.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Wow, there is more. But I thought it was just
- 3:27Speaker 1: my apartment breaking down. Again, it turns out it's like
- 3:30Speaker 1: a city wide issue.
- 3:31Speaker 2: And you're like, Okay, I went.
- 3:33Speaker 1: To the store to get water and there was no water,
- 3:35Speaker 1: so uh, I'm also I'm recovering because I drink a
- 3:41Speaker 1: lot of water and so like did not have it.
- 3:44Speaker 1: But I also went home that weekend. That's the same
- 3:46Speaker 1: weekend I went home, so I missed like the good
- 3:48Speaker 1: chunk of it. But anyway, that being said, I'm drinking wine. Yes, yes,
- 3:58Speaker 1: you know, and there's no water, you go for the wine,
- 4:00Speaker 1: I guess. So today for the half hour, since it
- 4:05Speaker 1: is Pride month and I have been thinking about a
- 4:10Speaker 1: lot of things around that lately. I mentioned something in
- 4:13Speaker 1: our recent Feminis around the World episode that we did
- 4:16Speaker 1: which was on me, and I was very shy and embarrassed.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Great, oh thanks.
- 4:23Speaker 1: But one thing I mentioned in there is something I
- 4:26Speaker 1: wanted to come back and talk about, and well, actually
- 4:30Speaker 1: there are a couple things. There are a couple of
- 4:31Speaker 1: things I want to revisit. One is that I said
- 4:34Speaker 1: in there that I feel really settled, which I do that.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I feel like one of the issues I'm running into
- 4:43Speaker 1: now is other people don't feel settled with me, and
- 4:48Speaker 1: so they're like embarrassed for me, or they feel like
- 4:51Speaker 1: they have to explain me, and I like, I'm good,
- 4:53Speaker 1: you don't have to, you know, talk about it's all right.
- 4:56Speaker 1: So that is something I've run into a couple times.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And most of the time it's really sweet, like it's
- 5:00Speaker 1: like genuinely coming from a good place. But sometimes I'm like, Nah,
- 5:04Speaker 1: don't worry about it, don't have you don't have to
- 5:08Speaker 1: do that. And also when I was talking in there
- 5:11Speaker 1: about like the kind of head turn people do to me, now,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I feel like this is something like a lot of
- 5:20Speaker 1: people experience of like marginalized communities. If you're feminists, if
- 5:25Speaker 1: they people know you're feminists in the head turn. I
- 5:27Speaker 1: think what's interesting to me about this is that I
- 5:30Speaker 1: was like pro gay rights, but now people know I'm gay,
- 5:35Speaker 1: and so it's sort of like a strange It's just
- 5:39Speaker 1: a difference. It's just a little bit of a difference
- 5:42Speaker 1: that I'm having to adjust to. But one of the
- 5:46Speaker 1: things I mentioned in there in passing, but I really
- 5:49Speaker 1: did want to come back and talk about is this
- 5:52Speaker 1: thing that I mentioned about gay animals Samantha right right,
- 6:00Speaker 1: because there was this documentary that came out and conservatives
- 6:05Speaker 1: were up in arms about it about how it was propaganda. Again,
- 6:09Speaker 1: I have not seen it. I can't speak to it,
- 6:13Speaker 1: but I can tell you that I have numerous memories
- 6:21Speaker 1: of people telling me the Animal Kingdom doesn't have queer animals,
- 6:25Speaker 1: there are no gay animals, therefore humans can't be gay.
- 6:30Speaker 1: It's like the natural order is that you it's heterosexual,
- 6:37Speaker 1: and everything else is deviant because we can look to
- 6:39Speaker 1: the Animal Kingdom and look, they're not having gay sex. Well,
- 6:43Speaker 1: it turns out they are. But the thing is, like
- 6:48Speaker 1: I also even if that wasn't the case, I just
- 6:51Speaker 1: do would appreciated comparison in general.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Like why.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Animals do a lot of things people don't do right,
- 7:03Speaker 1: the like animal Kingdom is weird, wild, fascinating, terrifying, and
- 7:09Speaker 1: a lot of it is just not stuff that humans
- 7:12Speaker 1: do right. And so I don't think that that should
- 7:18Speaker 1: necessarily be your reasoning when you're like, oh, you can't
- 7:22Speaker 1: be gay because listen the animals. I've done all my
- 7:28Speaker 1: research and I've never found a gay animal, which you
- 7:32Speaker 1: definitely haven't.
- 7:34Speaker 2: You did no research there? You just want to pretend no.
- 7:39Speaker 1: And that does come up in a lot of things,
- 7:41Speaker 1: like I know, we've all experienced this in one way
- 7:43Speaker 1: or another where people will use examples from the Animal
- 7:47Speaker 1: Kingdom to make some kind of point about how women
- 7:51Speaker 1: are weaker, for example, when again, as you and I
- 7:54Speaker 1: talked about, it's a lot of instances in the Animal Kingdom.
- 7:58Speaker 1: If we're going to go down that path of that
- 8:00Speaker 1: not being the case, that's not true. Yes, yes, And
- 8:05Speaker 1: I did get a kick out of I know I
- 8:08Speaker 1: wrote about this in her book. I've mentioned it before,
- 8:11Speaker 1: but one of the first times I heard the term
- 8:14Speaker 1: asexual was in the nineteen ninety eight film Godzilla. And
- 8:20Speaker 1: recently I watched a new movie not a Sponsor under
- 8:24Speaker 1: Paris and spoilers, I guess the shark can reproduce without
- 8:32Speaker 1: a male.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Oh this is the one you were like, It's actually
- 8:35Speaker 2: pretty good.
- 8:36Speaker 1: I liked it.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I really liked it.
- 8:38Speaker 1: It's really interesting given the Olympics are coming up and
- 8:43Speaker 1: everything that's going on with that. But it was I
- 8:47Speaker 1: was kind of watching it like, well, don't need a
- 8:53Speaker 1: man according to this. If I'm looking to the Animal.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Kingdom based on this.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I'm good, yeah, but it's interesting how prevalent that response
- 9:04Speaker 1: has been. And also, like even my mom she asked
- 9:10Speaker 1: me about it because she was like a lot of
- 9:12Speaker 1: her conservative friends will say that, and she was like
- 9:14Speaker 1: kind of confused by it, and I was like, it
- 9:17Speaker 1: doesn't really matter. I mean, maybe animals, it sounds like,
- 9:22Speaker 1: you know, they do get up to all kinds of stuff,
- 9:24Speaker 1: But even if they didn't, I just don't think this
- 9:27Speaker 1: is the this is the conversation that we should be having, right.
- 9:34Speaker 1: It's fascinating to me that how many people like to
- 9:36Speaker 1: do that, and it does go back to so many
- 9:40Speaker 1: of those kind of like natural order things, But when
- 9:42Speaker 1: you break down those natural order things, so many often
- 9:45Speaker 1: they are constructed like social order things, Like I feel
- 9:53Speaker 1: like the same people would make the same argument about
- 9:57Speaker 1: like the woman should stay home and take care of
- 9:59Speaker 1: her the case, and the man should go out in
- 10:03Speaker 1: this very heteronormative way because that's the natural order, when
- 10:06Speaker 1: that's not the case, and even like looking into humanity,
- 10:11Speaker 1: that's not the case everywhere and hasn't been the case everywhere.
- 10:15Speaker 1: It's just that people like to make that argument of
- 10:18Speaker 1: this is the way it should be based on nature,
- 10:23Speaker 1: like this is just how we are, and it's a
- 10:27Speaker 1: it's a strange argument to have with someone because yes,
- 10:32Speaker 1: usually they have not they're not scientists, they haven't really
- 10:38Speaker 1: done any of the research around that. If they see
- 10:43Speaker 1: things that contradict their points, then they're they ignore it.
- 10:48Speaker 1: But also, yeah, I kind of don't want to be
- 10:50Speaker 1: arguing with you about like how dogs have sex, like
- 10:53Speaker 1: that's just not the life five want leads.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Right, Also talk about how like some male species eat
- 11:02Speaker 2: the offspring, Like what where are we going with this? Bro?
- 11:06Speaker 2: Like I just don't gidd this is.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I don't think this is helpful, right, And it's just yeah,
- 11:27Speaker 1: it's strange because I feel like some people, like some
- 11:31Speaker 1: people in this case being the people making that argument,
- 11:34Speaker 1: like being compared two animals or like in nature. But
- 11:42Speaker 1: so many times I just have these questions for you about, well,
- 11:48Speaker 1: you know a lot of animals don't live in your
- 11:51Speaker 1: air conditioned house with your food you buy from the.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Store, Like I don't have a posable thumb.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Yeah, Like I don't think we can carry this out,
- 12:01Speaker 1: you know, the way that you want to carry it out.
- 12:04Speaker 1: But that kind of goes back to also this thing
- 12:06Speaker 1: about kind of cosplaying. We talked about this bridget briefly
- 12:10Speaker 1: about kind of cosplaying. Is that the farmer or the
- 12:14Speaker 1: person who can live off the land when it comes
- 12:17Speaker 1: to trap wives or something like that, when that's a
- 12:21Speaker 1: really romanticized like they have people helping them, they do
- 12:26Speaker 1: have a job, they have all of these other things.
- 12:29Speaker 1: So I feel like the comparison to well, look how
- 12:35Speaker 1: this animal did it, You're not that animal.
- 12:40Speaker 2: They don't believe in the conception of God and Jesus, like,
- 12:44Speaker 2: they don't worship anywhere. They don't like for those who
- 12:47Speaker 2: are a conservative churches who really want to go to
- 12:48Speaker 2: this route, and they're like, well, you want to take
- 12:52Speaker 2: this picture of what you've see in the Bible where
- 12:54Speaker 2: the sheep and all these animals bow quote unquote, that's
- 12:59Speaker 2: not a thing like that's an art piece. And as
- 13:02Speaker 2: much as you want to pretend like they definitely you
- 13:05Speaker 2: can't see whether or not they actually have whatever you
- 13:08Speaker 2: think is a sole spiritual aspect of them like that
- 13:10Speaker 2: that's not necessarily a part of their thing. They don't
- 13:14Speaker 2: go and build churches and then get money and then
- 13:18Speaker 2: try to build more onto the church. So this is
- 13:21Speaker 2: like a weird flex for you to be like, this
- 13:24Speaker 2: is the standard of humanity, yeah, when they're not humans. Yeah.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And it's also just it goes back to the point
- 13:32Speaker 1: we've made several times because I feel like the argument
- 13:36Speaker 1: underlying it is both like this is natural the natural thing,
- 13:42Speaker 1: which again does ignore that animals do engage in gay activity,
- 13:47Speaker 1: but also that sex is for reproduction, which we know
- 13:51Speaker 1: even outside of the queer community is not the case.
- 13:56Speaker 1: There are multiple reasons why that is not the case
- 14:01Speaker 1: that to me just doesn't make any sense because people
- 14:06Speaker 1: have sex. If you wanted to have a baby every
- 14:08Speaker 1: time you had sex, like, I can't even fathom either
- 14:14Speaker 1: you're not having that much sex or you're having way
- 14:18Speaker 1: too many kids. I don't know. So the argument just
- 14:22Speaker 1: doesn't work for me. But they, I'm telling you, I
- 14:27Speaker 1: come across this a surprising amount, and I just can't
- 14:32Speaker 1: get them to see past that.
- 14:36Speaker 2: And the level of like, again, we have people who
- 14:39Speaker 2: are not able to conceive, whether it's due to fertility
- 14:44Speaker 2: issues or things like that, or whether it's because they're
- 14:48Speaker 2: getting older and fertility issues or they just have like
- 14:52Speaker 2: it's just not a possible thing. Are they also forbidden
- 14:57Speaker 2: forever from sex? Not sex just also not being married,
- 15:01Speaker 2: not like if that's not allowed for them, like they
- 15:05Speaker 2: are now ostracized from that part of the livelihood. Then
- 15:10Speaker 2: you know, shouldn't we have other conversations about this, because
- 15:13Speaker 2: again that doesn't make sense. Also a reminder we should
- 15:16Speaker 2: all be naked, I guess, I mean, which comes into
- 15:21Speaker 2: a whole different conversation because they also oppose that they're
- 15:24Speaker 2: like put on more clothes, damn it.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Well, and again I'm thinking of a specific group of
- 15:31Speaker 1: people here. They also don't believe in evolution, which makes
- 15:37Speaker 1: sense given, but if you're thinking more like animals, but
- 15:40Speaker 1: you're also saying we're not.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Anything like we are higher beings.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just the level of dissonance I don't understand.
- 15:50Speaker 1: And also I feel a lot of people using this
- 15:54Speaker 1: argument use it for well, that's why you know boys
- 15:58Speaker 1: will be boys, because it's in their nature. So it
- 16:04Speaker 1: is almost a strange card of saying, well, this is
- 16:10Speaker 1: why men want sex so much, need sex so much
- 16:16Speaker 1: in some cases it's like their animal nature and women don't,
- 16:24Speaker 1: which is also not true. But they're like using that
- 16:27Speaker 1: mindset to justify that as.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Well, right, but also for that to be justified, the
- 16:34Speaker 2: usage of medication to help these men who should be
- 16:39Speaker 2: this virile whatever what and whatnot because they can't do
- 16:42Speaker 2: it naturally. Is also against all the rest of this conversation,
- 16:48Speaker 2: which they are like they never ever really complain about
- 16:52Speaker 2: and are like, yeah, absolutely with us would be a
- 16:54Speaker 2: part of life.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And it's I just have so many I
- 17:08Speaker 1: know no one here is surprised. I'm not surprised either,
- 17:13Speaker 1: but it's just so frustrating, like all of the hypocrisy
- 17:18Speaker 1: I hear when I hear this based on other things
- 17:21Speaker 1: that they say. And it is true that nature is amazing.
- 17:26Speaker 1: It does have examples of all kinds of queer behavior,
- 17:31Speaker 1: and I think that's really cool. I think we can
- 17:33Speaker 1: acknowledge that and not use it to justify the existence
- 17:39Speaker 1: of that in humans.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Right, There's so many things to be said about why
- 17:44Speaker 2: they really really oppose something, and they need to find
- 17:47Speaker 2: reasons other than the fact that they just it disrupts
- 17:52Speaker 2: their belief system in a way that says that they
- 17:56Speaker 2: are not the moral all out beea that gets to
- 18:01Speaker 2: rule on right and wrong. Like it's just this whole
- 18:03Speaker 2: level of like, Okay, this allows me to be judgmental
- 18:07Speaker 2: in a way that I can say is science, but
- 18:10Speaker 2: it's not science.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Right, And if you give them the science, then they
- 18:16Speaker 1: don't want they don't believe it exactly. Oh, I'm sorry
- 18:23Speaker 1: if this was a bit of a mess, Listeners. My
- 18:25Speaker 1: thoughts are all over the place with it because I
- 18:27Speaker 1: just can't every time I try to like figure out
- 18:30Speaker 1: what they're thinking on one thing, again, I'm actually thinking
- 18:33Speaker 1: of a very specific group of people in my life.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Then they do something, I'm like, but don't you see
- 18:39Speaker 1: that I can't argue with you, right, because it doesn't
- 18:44Speaker 1: None of this makes sense, none of this.
- 18:46Speaker 2: The hypocrisies, and I think it's just again like the
- 18:49Speaker 2: black and white that they live in that doesn't exist,
- 18:52Speaker 2: that never existed, and they're realizing that what they have
- 18:57Speaker 2: learned and what they have tried to live their life by,
- 19:00Speaker 2: or what they think they needed to live that life by,
- 19:03Speaker 2: when it gets shaken and there's a hole or any
- 19:07Speaker 2: of that, then they double down in a way that
- 19:10Speaker 2: they are enable to have any alternate conversation or any
- 19:17Speaker 2: other way of listening or hearing or thinking, because they
- 19:20Speaker 2: need to just find what they need to back up
- 19:24Speaker 2: their own own conversations or own beliefs without actually looking
- 19:28Speaker 2: for it, like they just want someone to validate them,
- 19:30Speaker 2: and then if someone lives in a lifestyle or if
- 19:32Speaker 2: something is disproven, then they have to find a way
- 19:36Speaker 2: to block that out completely to protect themselves from being wrong. Yeah.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I've been thinking about this a lot too, about
- 19:46Speaker 1: there's some people that it doesn't matter, like you're never
- 19:49Speaker 1: going to change your minds, right, And it's sad because
- 19:53Speaker 1: you want to or like you don't want to give
- 19:56Speaker 1: up on them completely, but you're just there. It's almost
- 20:00Speaker 1: like a value they've chosen is I will never ever
- 20:05Speaker 1: change this, right, and so, and.
- 20:08Speaker 2: They would rather lose someone that was like someone like
- 20:13Speaker 2: I'm just thinking in general with families, like they would
- 20:16Speaker 2: rather lose someone than to backtrack and think about the
- 20:20Speaker 2: actual reality behind the things that they say or think.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, well I hope this made sense.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Is I think it's just I think it fit the
- 20:32Speaker 2: narrative pretty well, like because it's baffling, like the reasoning,
- 20:38Speaker 2: the conversations, the rationalization, the judgment. I think it's chaotic
- 20:43Speaker 2: in general. So this is the best you can do
- 20:45Speaker 2: and try to feel like what.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Yeah, because I was just trying to keep track of
- 20:50Speaker 1: like their thoughts and I couldn't uh wait wait no, okay, okay, okay, Well, listeners,
- 21:03Speaker 1: if any of you have any thoughts about this, if
- 21:06Speaker 1: you have your favorite queer behavior and an animal, I
- 21:09Speaker 1: actually do really like that, So I just don't think
- 21:13Speaker 1: it should be like our what we turn to right
- 21:17Speaker 1: for humanity, but I do like that stuff. Yeah, please
