- 1:16Speaker 2: excuse me, at 4.30, talking a little Southern Miss football.
- 1:21Speaker 2: College football playoff 24 team expansion talks will continue this
- 1:24Speaker 2: week in Chicago, courtesy of Pete Nacos, as talks around
- 1:28Speaker 2: the college football playoff expansion are set to continue this week.
- 1:34Speaker 2: And you know how these things go, in that they're
- 1:38Speaker 2: going to talk, they'll have a little news, and they
- 1:40Speaker 2: will come up with nothing. But they'll go meet. They'll
- 1:42Speaker 2: stay in good hotels. They'll eat good food. They'll do
- 1:44Speaker 2: all the things that's just kind of the MO of
- 1:47Speaker 2: these management committees. It's made up of 10 FBS conference
- 1:52Speaker 2: commissioners plus Notre Dame's athletics director and has a regularly
- 1:56Speaker 2: scheduled meeting this Wednesday in Chicago. So I guess they're
- 1:59Speaker 2: going in for one or two nights. The agenda will
- 2:01Speaker 2: include further discussions on potential expansion when decision makers decided
- 2:06Speaker 2: to stay with the 12-team field at meetings in Miami
- 2:08Speaker 2: in January. The Big Ten backed a 24-team model. while
- 2:11Speaker 2: the SEC and other eight conferences along with Notre Dame
- 2:14Speaker 2: wanted a 16-team playoff. Those conversations, though, have shifted in
- 2:18Speaker 2: the ensuing eight months. Momentum is behind a 24-team field,
- 2:22Speaker 2: with the ACC, Big 12, and Notre Dame now supporting
- 2:25Speaker 2: the expanded field. The SEC has expressed willingness to move
- 2:29Speaker 2: to 24 teams, but Commissioner Greg Sankey has been open
- 2:34Speaker 2: about wanting to see a full financial breakdown before making
- 2:38Speaker 2: any final decisions, and I don't blame him on that
- 2:41Speaker 2: one for sure. Steps have been taken to see those financials.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Earlier this month, the management committee triggered a 30-day negotiating
- 2:48Speaker 2: window between the college football playoff and ESPN to determine
- 2:52Speaker 2: the media value of a 2014 field, which could begin
- 2:55Speaker 2: as early as next season. That's the 2027 season. It's
- 3:00Speaker 2: a key move as leaders try to get answers on
- 3:02Speaker 2: financials before the December 1st deadline with ESPN. So you've
- 3:07Speaker 2: got the ESPN deadline going on on December 1st. but
- 3:11Speaker 2: the CFP leaders must decide if the 12-team field will
- 3:14Speaker 2: expand for a 2027 playoff. A year ago, ESPN granted
- 3:17Speaker 2: an extension to that deadline. Sankey wrote in a memo
- 3:21Speaker 2: to the CFP management committee this summer that he believes
- 3:24Speaker 2: the SEC must recruit the revenue lost from eliminating its
- 3:30Speaker 2: conference title game. Because remember, if you go to 24 teams,
- 3:34Speaker 2: your conference championships are going away. They have to because
- 3:38Speaker 2: of the calendar issues and the window. So that game
- 3:42Speaker 2: is going away if they go to 24. And Sankey says, hey,
- 3:46Speaker 2: I want to see where we're going to recoup this money.
- 3:47Speaker 2: And you're talking about a figure of about $ 100 million.
- 3:51Speaker 2: To replace conference championship games, sources have said conferences are
- 3:54Speaker 2: looking for roughly $ 200 to $ 250 million in annual combined
- 4:00Speaker 2: value to do away with this. Sankey also outlined his
- 4:03Speaker 2: priorities for a larger playoff field, including a requirement that
- 4:07Speaker 2: all schools play 10 qualifying events. which are classified as
- 4:12Speaker 2: games against power league competition or Notre Dame and conference games.
- 4:16Speaker 2: So Sankey says, Hey, look, we'll consider this, but a
- 4:20Speaker 2: couple of things have to happen. One you're asking us
- 4:23Speaker 2: to do away with our championship games. Well, if we
- 4:26Speaker 2: do that, we're going to lose a hundred million dollars.
- 4:27Speaker 2: We want to be able to see where we can
- 4:29Speaker 2: get somewhere between 200 and 250 in value for this.
- 4:33Speaker 2: And then we want everybody to play 10 qualifying games.
- 4:37Speaker 2: That means power league competition. So if you're in the,
- 4:40Speaker 2: If you're in a conference where you play eight conference games,
- 4:44Speaker 2: like the Big 12, and I can't remember what they play,
- 4:46Speaker 2: but let's just say the Big 12 plays eight, well,
- 4:48Speaker 2: then you've got to pick up two more games, not
- 4:51Speaker 2: against Boise, not against Utah State, not against Colorado State.
- 4:58Speaker 2: It's got to be power four teams. Big Ten Commissioner
- 5:02Speaker 2: Tony Petitti recently told On 3's Andy and Ari that
- 5:06Speaker 2: he agreed with Sankey Stantz trying to align schedules so
- 5:10Speaker 2: every team plays 10 power conference opponents will take some
- 5:13Speaker 2: tweaks as non-conference agreements are signed years into advance. Quote,
- 5:18Speaker 2: I think Greg is right, Petitti said, his position about
- 5:21Speaker 2: doing things to strengthen the game, and if you're saying
- 5:23Speaker 2: the 24 unlocks this, then what's the commitment to actually
- 5:27Speaker 2: do it? I think as a league, we're ready to
- 5:30Speaker 2: have the conversation and try to make those commitments. To me,
- 5:33Speaker 2: it would be a great result if we had more
- 5:37Speaker 2: access to the playoff And at the same time, we
- 5:39Speaker 2: also talk about playing more games that you want to
- 5:42Speaker 2: see for the first couple of weeks of the season
- 5:44Speaker 2: and that all fans want to see. He continues on
- 5:46Speaker 2: and says, we've been saying it from the beginning. If
- 5:49Speaker 2: you get to the 24 teams, we're going to put
- 5:51Speaker 2: our money where our mouth is. We're going to do
- 5:53Speaker 2: what we said we would do, and we're going to
- 5:55Speaker 2: improve our schedules. I'm totally comfortable doing that as a commitment.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Scheduling around the 24-team college football playoff remains an ongoing conversation.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Sources told On3.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Com.
- 6:07Speaker 2: As On3' s Brett McMurphy reported earlier this month, the college
- 6:10Speaker 2: football playoff executive director, Rich Clark, recently told bowl executives
- 6:14Speaker 2: there's no appetite for either of the two first-round playoff
- 6:18Speaker 2: games to be in the 2014 field, to be at
- 6:22Speaker 2: a bowl site. And remember, that's another sticking point of this, too,
- 6:25Speaker 2: is what's going to happen to the bowls? A lot
- 6:29Speaker 2: of these bowls are going to go out of business.
- 6:30Speaker 2: They just are. They're going to go out of business.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Triggering the 30-day negotiating window from ESPN also means discussing
- 6:36Speaker 2: who would own the television rights to the additional games
- 6:39Speaker 2: that come from the 24-team field. Multiple conference commissioners have
- 6:43Speaker 2: pointed out in recent months that ESPN would prefer to
- 6:46Speaker 2: stay at a 12-team model and not pass the 16-team mark.
- 6:51Speaker 2: ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said at his league meetings this
- 6:54Speaker 2: spring that ESPN made it clear it wants to stay
- 6:57Speaker 2: at 12 or 14 but no more than 16. And
- 7:01Speaker 2: probably for ESPN, some of that is going to be
- 7:04Speaker 2: ties to the NFL, available inventory. You're getting into a big,
- 7:10Speaker 2: big field here. And what may happen with this is
- 7:13Speaker 2: you may see some of this negotiated out to Fox.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Amazon may pick up a playoff game. You know how
- 7:19Speaker 2: it goes, right? I mean, just look at the NFL model.
- 7:22Speaker 2: It goes on to say, though, still the SEC and
- 7:24Speaker 2: Big Ten hold authority over any format change, which would
- 7:28Speaker 2: mean the two conferences must agree on a format for
- 7:30Speaker 2: it to move forward. Wednesday's meetings will continue that march
- 7:33Speaker 2: towards the possible expansion. Sankey even tamped down expectations that
- 7:37Speaker 2: triggering a 30-day negotiating window with ESPN meant expansion was guaranteed.
- 7:42Speaker 2: He says, quote, we've participated in that conversation, Sankey said
- 7:46Speaker 2: earlier this month, at the Monday morning quarterback club in Birmingham, Alabama.
- 7:49Speaker 2: That doesn't mean expansion will happen. There's a media negotiation opportunity,
- 7:54Speaker 2: which is an important piece of the information, and we'll
- 7:57Speaker 2: have an opportunity, it would appear, later in the fall
- 8:00Speaker 2: to make a decision on that. So I think that
- 8:03Speaker 2: they're going to do this. 24 seems to be, and
- 8:07Speaker 2: there's a couple reasons behind the 24. One is money.
- 8:11Speaker 2: The money is the big thing. More money for people
- 8:14Speaker 2: because people are hemorrhaging money and need money. So more
- 8:17Speaker 2: TV dollars, more money to put back in your program
- 8:20Speaker 2: because we can't stop spending. You know, that's the thing.
- 8:23Speaker 2: And this bill in D.C. is supposed to, quote, cap spending.
- 8:27Speaker 2: It's not going to cap spending. Because there's no true
- 8:29Speaker 2: players union. There's no true commissioner. This is all on paper.
- 8:35Speaker 2: This is just a, what's going on in D.C. is
- 8:38Speaker 2: a glorified NCAA book 2.0 that some, most will follow,
- 8:43Speaker 2: but some will not. They're going to continue to hemorrhage money.
- 8:47Speaker 2: So they need money to access. They want more teams
- 8:51Speaker 2: in the playoff, even though some of these teams don't
- 8:53Speaker 2: need to be in the playoff. They want more teams
- 8:55Speaker 2: in the playoffs. So, we'll see. This is going to
- 8:57Speaker 2: eventually– it will pass. We'll go to 24 teams. There's
- 9:01Speaker 2: just too much money involved here. Now, how that works
- 9:03Speaker 2: out with the TV windows and how that works out on,
- 9:06Speaker 2: you know, when the season will start, will week zero
- 9:08Speaker 2: become season– the official week one, what happens, you know. And, again,
- 9:13Speaker 2: they've got to work around the NFL, too, especially when
- 9:16Speaker 2: you start getting into the playoffs. I mean, you're talking
- 9:19Speaker 2: a lot of first-round games. It's going to be happening
- 9:21Speaker 2: during the wild-card weekends and all– So it's a mess.

- 11:13Speaker 2: Let's look at the CBSSports.com power rankings for the SEC
- 11:17Speaker 2: this week. This is week five on strength of an
- 11:22Speaker 2: impressive resume, stacking resumes. They still have Texas number one
- 11:28Speaker 2: in the SEC, and I don't particularly have a problem
- 11:30Speaker 2: with Texas being number one. Texas just did not look
- 11:33Speaker 2: great against Tennessee. Now, here's the plus side. They won. So,
- 11:38Speaker 2: you know, really good teams can play very marginal and
- 11:41Speaker 2: still win. Texas isn't winning any beauty contests, but they're
- 11:45Speaker 2: 4-0 with a pair of top 15 wins, the latest
- 11:48Speaker 2: coming on the road against an SEC opponent. There's zero
- 11:50Speaker 2: question about the defense. Is it championship caliber under Will Muschamp?
- 11:54Speaker 2: Between Colin Simmons and Bo Mascu and several others, Longhorns
- 11:58Speaker 2: have elite players at every level. The offense has tons
- 12:01Speaker 2: of room for improvement, though. They're currently sitting number one.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Georgia at number two. The margin was relatively thin at
- 12:08Speaker 2: the top, largely because Georgia has looked the part of
- 12:11Speaker 2: a national championship contender against inferior opponents. The Bulldogs haven't
- 12:14Speaker 2: won a game by fewer than 28 points so far,
- 12:19Speaker 2: and Gunnar Sockton and the offense have looked really, really good.
- 12:24Speaker 2: We'll see what they do as they host Vanderbilt, and
- 12:26Speaker 2: then they move on to take on Auburn. Florida has
- 12:30Speaker 2: moved to number three. If you're talking about fun teams
- 12:36Speaker 2: to watch right now, the Gators are probably the top
- 12:38Speaker 2: on that list. Jaden Ball is a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate.
- 12:43Speaker 2: You look at Buster Faulkner and the offensive numbers that
- 12:45Speaker 2: they're putting up, 53.5 points per game, which ranks second nationally.
- 12:50Speaker 2: It took John Summerall four games to get his first
- 12:54Speaker 2: top five win in Gainesville, and now the college football
- 12:57Speaker 2: playoff looks like an obtainable goal at least this week
- 13:01Speaker 2: for the Florida Gators. Alabama at number four on the CBSSports.com
- 13:06Speaker 2: SEC Power Rankings says, with the first month of the
- 13:09Speaker 2: season behind us, everyone has the same question about Alabama.
- 13:12Speaker 2: How did it take so long for Keelan Russell to
- 13:15Speaker 2: win the starting job? Russell has been every bit as
- 13:18Speaker 2: advertised so far. And look, people are asking that question.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Why did it take him so long to win the job?
- 13:24Speaker 2: Probably because Kalen Dabor didn't want his other quarterback to
- 13:29Speaker 2: jump in the transfer portal, right? I mean, that's the
- 13:31Speaker 2: thing a lot of people forget. These are battles that
- 13:34Speaker 2: these coaches are fighting internally. It's like, hey, when you've
- 13:37Speaker 2: got a couple quarterbacks and you're trying to roll out
- 13:39Speaker 2: a new quarterback for this season or next season, do
- 13:43Speaker 2: we name a starter early? Or, you know, there was
- 13:45Speaker 2: a coach a few years ago, and it may have
- 13:46Speaker 2: been Dave Aranda, who named a starter at Baylor in
- 13:50Speaker 2: the spring, and he said, hey, I did this because
- 13:52Speaker 2: I wanted my other guy to have an opportunity to
- 13:54Speaker 2: go play somewhere else if he wanted to. So you
- 13:56Speaker 2: kind of, you know, you have to give, a lot
- 13:58Speaker 2: of respect to that. But it wasn't that Keelan Russell,
- 14:01Speaker 2: I think, was being challenged. I think it was that
- 14:03Speaker 2: Keelan Boer just wanted to keep his second quarterback, and
- 14:06Speaker 2: I can't say I blame him. Because a lot of times,
- 14:08Speaker 2: as you know, if you name a quarterback in the spring, well,
- 14:10Speaker 2: the other one's going to say, well, I'm gone. I'm
- 14:11Speaker 2: going to go somewhere else. Ole Miss at number five
- 14:13Speaker 2: on the CBS Sports SEC Power Rankings, and, you know,
- 14:17Speaker 2: you start getting to five, six, seven, eight, and you
- 14:20Speaker 2: could do a lot of debating here. I don't think
- 14:22Speaker 2: you can really debate that, you know, in whatever order
- 14:25Speaker 2: you want to put them, Texas, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama
- 14:27Speaker 2: are the top teams in the league The next group,
- 14:29Speaker 2: you're talking about Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and LSU, and
- 14:31Speaker 2: probably Tennessee. Ole Miss, of course, a big letdown over
- 14:36Speaker 2: the past weekend against Florida down in the swap. We
- 14:39Speaker 2: talked to Jay Thompson and our number one about Q
- 14:40Speaker 2: and Lacey and the injuries. They need to get him
- 14:43Speaker 2: back healthy. And then what does Ole Miss do defensively?
- 14:47Speaker 2: Because they don't tackle well. The defense looks very lethargic
- 14:51Speaker 2: at times. A lot of the success is spent on
- 14:55Speaker 2: the quarterback there. At number five, Ole Miss has a
- 14:58Speaker 2: couple games coming up after the bye week with Vanderbilt
- 15:01Speaker 2: on the road and then Missouri where they can kind
- 15:03Speaker 2: of get back on track before heading to Austin and
- 15:05Speaker 2: taking on Texas. LSU at number six says there was
- 15:09Speaker 2: no post-Kiffin Bowl hangover for LSU. The Tigers returned to
- 15:12Speaker 2: the friendly confines of Death Valley and handled Texas A
- 15:16Speaker 2: & M in a rivalry game. So we'll see what
- 15:20Speaker 2: LSU does moving forward, and if you go look at
- 15:22Speaker 2: LSU's schedule now that they're back on track after the
- 15:25Speaker 2: Texas A & M win And make no mistake about it,
- 15:28Speaker 2: they needed that win, big time. LSU is averaging 39
- 15:32Speaker 2: a game, giving up 16 a game. They'll take on
- 15:35Speaker 2: McNeese State this weekend in another snooze fest, so they
- 15:38Speaker 2: will move to 4-1. Then they'll go to Kentucky, which,
- 15:42Speaker 2: you know, again, Kentucky is much improved. You know, this
- 15:45Speaker 2: Kentucky team is not a team that's going to win
- 15:47Speaker 2: the conference, but they're averaging 35 a game, giving up
- 15:50Speaker 2: 25 a game. And they played Alabama and Texas A
- 15:54Speaker 2: & M, split those two. They played two inferior opponents.
- 15:57Speaker 2: in South Alabama and Youngstown State. They'll get South Carolina
- 16:03Speaker 2: this weekend. But back to LSU, I mean, they can't
- 16:05Speaker 2: sleepwalk against Kentucky. They'll host Mississippi State. They'll be a
- 16:09Speaker 2: favorite in both those games. They'll go to Auburn where
- 16:12Speaker 2: they'll be a favorite. They'll host Alabama and Texas on
- 16:15Speaker 2: back-to-back weeks in November. And then they'll go to Tennessee
- 16:18Speaker 2: and then play at Arkansas. So LSU has one loss
- 16:21Speaker 2: on the season. And you've got to think, if you
- 16:25Speaker 2: move forward and look, they're likely going to split Alabama
- 16:28Speaker 2: and Texas. So that's two losses. Tennessee is no joke.
- 16:33Speaker 2: You know, Mississippi State, Auburn on the road, Kentucky on
- 16:36Speaker 2: the road. I mean, LSU still has a lot of
- 16:38Speaker 2: work to do. And they don't have– when you have
- 16:40Speaker 2: one loss already in November, it puts you in somewhat
- 16:44Speaker 2: of a pickle. Now, if we were in this 2014
- 16:45Speaker 2: format that they're talking about, then, you know, you could
- 16:48Speaker 2: have a little bit more flex. Mississippi State at number
- 16:50Speaker 2: seven in the CBS SEC power rankings. It's really hard
- 16:54Speaker 2: not to be enamored with Mississippi State. The Bulldogs play
- 16:57Speaker 2: a fun style of offense. Kamario Taylor does something spectacular
- 17:00Speaker 2: every weekend. There are many tougher challenges that await Mississippi
- 17:04Speaker 2: State starting this weekend, but it's looked like a top-half
- 17:07Speaker 2: SEC team based on what you've seen after the first month.
- 17:10Speaker 2: And I think you're absolutely right. And again, for the
- 17:12Speaker 2: pessimist Mississippi State fans or for other fans of other
- 17:16Speaker 2: schools that say, well, this was a 4-0 team last
- 17:18Speaker 2: year too. This is not the same 4-0. It's not
- 17:23Speaker 2: even close to the same 4-0. State played inferior opponents
- 17:26Speaker 2: outside of Arizona State who was very average last year.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Got to 4-0 and then lost some games along the
- 17:32Speaker 2: way that we don't have to rehash how that whole
- 17:34Speaker 2: thing went out. State has played two road games against
- 17:38Speaker 2: powerful opponents. They went and won. Won handily at Minnesota.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Ended up pulling away from South Carolina and then got
- 17:44Speaker 2: a first top 25 win against Missouri this past week.
- 17:47Speaker 2: First one since 2014 at Davis Wade Stadium. This is
- 17:50Speaker 2: not the same 4-0. They are not equal. So, you know,
- 17:53Speaker 2: State now In play, when you start looking at what's
- 17:58Speaker 2: in play for Mississippi State, obviously this weekend is huge.
- 18:01Speaker 2: If they beat Alabama this weekend, and again, the weather
- 18:04Speaker 2: could play a big part in this game this weekend.
- 18:06Speaker 2: It could get really nasty. That could change the whole
- 18:09Speaker 2: dynamic of this entire thing this weekend. But even if
- 18:13Speaker 2: State was, now if they win this game and get
- 18:14Speaker 2: to 5-0, then this thing gets really, really interesting for
- 18:17Speaker 2: Mississippi State. But if they lose, even if they lose
- 18:20Speaker 2: the next two weeks, Alabama and LSU, I think Oklahoma
- 18:25Speaker 2: is well in play now. Their defense is really good,
- 18:28Speaker 2: one of the best in the country, but that offense
- 18:31Speaker 2: is lethargic. And being at Davis-Wade Stadium, I would give
- 18:34Speaker 2: Mississippi State the edge. And if they win and loss
- 18:40Speaker 2: to Texas, that's three losses, I think they can beat Vanderbilt.
- 18:44Speaker 2: I think they can beat Auburn. They'll beat Tennessee Tech.
- 18:47Speaker 2: So you're going into the Egg Bowl, possibly, if you
- 18:49Speaker 2: stay healthy, looking for a ninth win, even if you
- 18:51Speaker 2: lose those three. And you'd have to look at that
- 18:54Speaker 2: schedule and you'd have to start asking questions because we're
- 18:56Speaker 2: going to see how many nine and three teams are
- 18:59Speaker 2: going to be eligible, you know, in that conversation for
- 19:01Speaker 2: the college football playoff. But if you win this week,
- 19:04Speaker 2: think about it. If you won this week and still lost,
- 19:07Speaker 2: LSU on the road, Texas on the road, and you
- 19:10Speaker 2: went into the Egg Bowl, holy wow, with a chance
- 19:14Speaker 2: to maybe win ten ballgames? It's crazy. It's crazy. It's
- 19:19Speaker 2: a big weekend this weekend at Starville. Looking at the
- 19:22Speaker 2: rest of this CBSSports.com poll real quickly. Tennessee at number 8.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Oklahoma at number 9. And I think that's way too
- 19:28Speaker 2: high for Oklahoma. I think that's way too generous. This
- 19:31Speaker 2: is not a good football team. Kentucky at number 10.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Texas A & M at number 11. I think it's
- 19:36Speaker 2: way too high. Missouri at number 12. I'd move Missouri up.
- 19:39Speaker 2: I'd move Auburn up at 13. Vanderbilt at 14. South
- 19:43Speaker 2: Carolina at 15. And then Arkansas at 16. I think
- 19:45Speaker 2: CBS is way too generous to Oklahoma at nine. It
- 19:52Speaker 2: says Oklahoma put all the apples in a basket labeled
- 19:56Speaker 2: John Mateer and Ben Arbuckle. That's the offensive coordinator. It
- 19:59Speaker 2: looks like a bad bet right now. Even if Mateer
- 20:01Speaker 2: took care of the ball on Saturday, the Sooners probably
- 20:03Speaker 2: wouldn't have beaten Georgia. No, they weren't going to beat Georgia.
- 20:05Speaker 2: It says Oklahoma was never in that game largely due
- 20:08Speaker 2: to Mateer's performance And a quarterback change has to be
- 20:12Speaker 2: on the table before taking on Texas. We'll see if
- 20:14Speaker 2: it is for Oklahoma. But Oklahoma is not a top
- 20:19Speaker 2: ten SEC team right now. They're just not. I mean,
- 20:22Speaker 2: they don't pass the eye test. They don't pass the
- 20:24Speaker 2: smell test. Texas A & M, frankly, isn't either. Both
- 20:28Speaker 2: of these teams are ten and down. Again, I think
- 20:32Speaker 2: Kentucky has warranted enough to be ten and in. I
- 20:34Speaker 2: think you still need to put Missouri in that ten
- 20:36Speaker 2: and in. I think Auburn could be in that ten
- 20:37Speaker 2: and in. We're brought to you by friends at Janny King.

- 23:02Speaker 2: Southern Miss gets ready on the 6th of October to
- 23:05Speaker 2: take on Troy. Heath, welcome in, brother. How are you doing?
- 23:09Speaker 4: I'm good, Jake. I'm a little better now that Atlanta
- 23:11Speaker 4: Braves pulled it out. But I'm doing well.
- 23:13Speaker 1: How about yourself?
- 23:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I was seeing that come across the wire there.
- 23:17Speaker 2: And I know a lot of people are excited about that.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Championship baseball is here. All right, so let's recap. A
- 23:24Speaker 2: month into this thing, got a win over Alcorn State,
- 23:27Speaker 2: a close loss at Tulane, 24-21. Just kind of your
- 23:31Speaker 2: assessment of this Southern Miss football team a month into
- 23:33Speaker 2: the season.
- 23:35Speaker 4: I think you saw in the last game a team
- 23:36Speaker 4: that's starting to come together, a team that should have
- 23:40Speaker 4: beat Tulane, to be honest with you. Of course, Blake
- 23:43Speaker 4: Anderson's already said it, but two Miss field goals cost
- 23:47Speaker 4: the game, let's be honest. They played extremely well, I think,
- 23:52Speaker 4: As far as defense, you've got to work on some tackling. Offensively,
- 23:57Speaker 4: by the best game of the year, I thought Landry
- 23:59Speaker 4: Liddy was incredible. 18-29, 243, three touchdowns. Completion percentage, 62%.
- 24:07Speaker 4: I mean, a rating of 166.6. Not too bad for
- 24:11Speaker 4: the first start of the year, especially down there in
- 24:14Speaker 4: New Orleans against Tulane. So I think you saw some growth.
- 24:17Speaker 4: I think you saw some good things, and... They get
- 24:20Speaker 4: a few extra days this week to prepare for Troy
- 24:22Speaker 4: on Tuesday next week. Really, I thought they played a
- 24:26Speaker 4: great game, just didn't get the win, but you can
- 24:29Speaker 4: see a team of 75 newcomers finally starting together in jail.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Visiting with Heath Hinton, talking Southern Miss football. Eagles on
- 24:36Speaker 2: the bye week. They'll get an opportunity next week at
- 24:38Speaker 2: Troy before two home games on the 17th and 24
- 24:41Speaker 2: against Arkansas State and Louisiana, formerly Lafayette. Tuesday edition of
- 24:45Speaker 2: the program. Heath, you had sent me something. I had
- 24:47Speaker 2: not seen it. Talk a little bit about what you
- 24:49Speaker 2: had sent me that Blake Anderson said. It's kind of
- 24:50Speaker 2: ruffling a little feathers, no pun intended, but I do
- 24:53Speaker 2: want to discuss that.
- 24:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's just sometimes things get taken out
- 24:57Speaker 4: of context. Somebody asked him, how do you keep from
- 24:59Speaker 4: play start? And he said, well, you stop scheduling teams like,
- 25:04Speaker 4: you know, Auburn, UConn, Tulane. And what he was meaning,
- 25:08Speaker 4: he didn't mean not to schedule them. He was talking
- 25:11Speaker 4: about when you play teams like that and they're bigger
- 25:14Speaker 4: and more physical than you up front, What you've got
- 25:16Speaker 4: to do is you've got to wear them down. You've
- 25:17Speaker 4: got to hope that later on that your stamina and
- 25:21Speaker 4: that your ability to be in shape is better than
- 25:23Speaker 4: theirs are, and you wear them down towards the end,
- 25:26Speaker 4: but you try to keep it close. And that's what
- 25:27Speaker 4: they did at Tulane. It actually worked. In the game,
- 25:30Speaker 4: they were popping six, seven, eight, nine yards a carry
- 25:33Speaker 4: in the fourth quarter because Tulane was tired. And so
- 25:37Speaker 4: that's what he was talking about. I think maybe some
- 25:39Speaker 4: people took it the wrong way. He clarified today that
- 25:43Speaker 4: that is what he said, and I think everything's fine now. But,
- 25:47Speaker 4: you know, sometimes people get upset, especially when their team
- 25:50Speaker 4: loses against a rival. And I think everything will be
- 25:53Speaker 4: okay now. So I don't think it's going to be
- 25:55Speaker 4: much of a deal anymore. But, you know, people get
- 25:58Speaker 4: upset when you lose. And if you don't say things
- 26:00Speaker 4: the right way, and Blake, you admitted, I could have
- 26:03Speaker 4: said it better. You could have said it better. And
- 26:06Speaker 4: so I think it's all water under the bridge now.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Well, but I think there's a lot of truth in
- 26:12Speaker 2: what he said. I mean, when you look at this,
- 26:14Speaker 2: and for some reason, and you go to the college
- 26:17Speaker 2: football playoff committee, and you go to a lot of
- 26:19Speaker 2: the talking heads in college football, you know, they're talking about, hey,
- 26:22Speaker 2: we need more expansion. We need a bigger playoff. That
- 26:25Speaker 2: whole deal's going on in Chicago this week. They'll have
- 26:27Speaker 2: meetings tomorrow with the playoff committee. And, you know, hey,
- 26:30Speaker 2: we want more opportunities for teams to get in the field.
- 26:33Speaker 2: But the field isn't even. And I think that's what,
- 26:36Speaker 2: and correct me if I'm wrong here, that's what Blake
- 26:37Speaker 2: Anderson's saying. I don't think it's an excuse. He's saying, hey, look,
- 26:40Speaker 2: We don't, and I don't want to speak directly for him,
- 26:43Speaker 2: and you've heard this from other group of six coaches,
- 26:46Speaker 2: we don't have the money that the schools, that Auburn's have.
- 26:49Speaker 2: We don't have the money that the Ole Miss and
- 26:51Speaker 2: Mississippi States have, and you can go around the corner
- 26:53Speaker 2: here to Alabama and other places. We know that we're
- 26:56Speaker 2: basically a feeding frenzy for these other universities. We can't
- 27:00Speaker 2: compete any longer with these schools. And to me, again,
- 27:05Speaker 2: it's a shame on you moment to the NCAA team
- 27:08Speaker 2: and to the college football playoff committee that we continue
- 27:10Speaker 2: to pretend that we are all still equal when they're
- 27:14Speaker 2: actually not. And I think that's what, to me, that's
- 27:16Speaker 2: what I heard out of that.
- 27:17Speaker 4: That's exactly right. He's saying, look, they're being outspent. Southern
- 27:22Speaker 4: Miss doesn't have any of those resources. You play Auburn,
- 27:24Speaker 4: you're outspent 30-1. You play Tulane, you're outspent 5-1. You're
- 27:28Speaker 4: outspent 4-1. You're playing teams that outspend you. And, you know,
- 27:34Speaker 4: it is true, just like in professional sports, Usually the
- 27:38Speaker 4: teams that spend the most money on their rosters are
- 27:40Speaker 4: the teams that are going to win. And in college football,
- 27:43Speaker 4: that's true. You want the best players, you've got to
- 27:44Speaker 4: spend the most money. And how do you combat that? Well,
- 27:49Speaker 4: you try to find some JUCO guys. That's what JUCO
- 27:52Speaker 4: is for now. And high school guys and bring them
- 27:54Speaker 4: in and hope they can compete young. And find some
- 27:57Speaker 4: FCS guys that you can bring up, and that's what
- 27:59Speaker 4: Blake does. I think they did a really good job
- 28:01Speaker 4: of it, especially when you only had to consider he
- 28:03Speaker 4: had maybe two and a half weeks to get a
- 28:06Speaker 4: roster to get. after the bowl game was when Huff
- 28:10Speaker 4: left and took all the players with him. So, yeah,
- 28:14Speaker 4: it's not a level playing field. It just isn't. And
- 28:20Speaker 4: until they do something to put a cap on him
- 28:23Speaker 4: and stop all the multiple transfers, all the leverage is
- 28:28Speaker 4: with the players, and none of it are with the schools,
- 28:30Speaker 4: and it's showing right now.
- 28:32Speaker 1: It's the wild west.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Heath, talk a little bit about this defense. You've got
- 28:37Speaker 2: some guys that are playmakers on this defense. It's a
- 28:40Speaker 2: defense that's given up 29, almost 30 points per game,
- 28:43Speaker 2: but I would think those numbers would improve over the
- 28:45Speaker 2: next several weeks. Michael Robinson III, he's a junior defensive back.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Mathis Haygood, a junior linebacker. Those two guys kind of
- 28:53Speaker 2: lead the charge here in tackles right at 29 apiece.
- 28:55Speaker 2: And then you've got some other, I think, good pieces
- 28:58Speaker 2: on this defense to really build around.
- 29:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think the defense is coming together. One thing
- 29:02Speaker 4: they've got to work on is tackling. I think that
- 29:05Speaker 4: really got them in the two-lane game. Look, they had
- 29:07Speaker 4: those guys stop in the backfield, miss three or four tackles,
- 29:10Speaker 4: get through, and two-lane had some really good physical running back.
- 29:13Speaker 4: So you've got to give them credit, too. It's not
- 29:14Speaker 4: like they're tackling a dummy out there. But, yeah, I think,
- 29:18Speaker 4: you know, you look at Sylvie, DB, just he's turned
- 29:25Speaker 4: into a really, really, really good cornerback who makes it
- 29:29Speaker 4: play to the next level. You never know. You're right,
- 29:32Speaker 4: Michael Robinson, third DB, he's really a missile in the
- 29:38Speaker 4: defensive backfield. So I do think you're seeing some growth there.
- 29:43Speaker 4: So you've got to work on the tackling, but I
- 29:45Speaker 4: also think it's going to be a different story once
- 29:47Speaker 4: you get into conference play. You know, Blake was true
- 29:49Speaker 4: about this. Play teams that are more like you, and
- 29:51Speaker 4: I think things are going to be a little more even,
- 29:53Speaker 4: and I think these big battles they've had are going
- 29:56Speaker 4: to make things easier for them when they get into conference.
- 29:59Speaker 4: A lot of people forget that UConn team, that coach
- 30:02Speaker 4: came from Toledo, I believe, two years ago. That Toledo
- 30:06Speaker 4: team came in Mississippi State in, what, 41-17 or something
- 30:10Speaker 4: like that. So that guy can coach, and he brought
- 30:13Speaker 4: a lot of his players with him, too. It's just
- 30:16Speaker 4: a different day and age to live in when you're
- 30:19Speaker 4: trying to build it with an assistant coach as having
- 30:21Speaker 4: a coach that's a head coach coming in. It's different,
- 30:25Speaker 4: and you're seeing it. And I think they're growing. Just
- 30:28Speaker 4: got to work on the tackling on the defensive side.
- 30:30Speaker 4: But a lot of football we played this year. They're
- 30:32Speaker 4: one in three conference plays coming up. Who knows what
- 30:34Speaker 4: will happen.
- 30:37Speaker 2: Make sure to get him on exit. BG and Heath Hinton,

- 32:17Speaker 2: with you tomorrow as well. All right, John Talty with
- 32:20Speaker 2: the CBSSports.com crew has done his SEC playoff bracket, because
- 32:26Speaker 2: that's what it is, playoff bracket for this week, and
- 32:30Speaker 2: he thinks that there's a chance at least for a
- 32:31Speaker 2: month in to get five teams into the field. I
- 32:34Speaker 2: would have said that that was preposterous, literally preposterous. That's
- 32:39Speaker 2: what it sounds like. No, all jokes aside, that was
- 32:42Speaker 2: not going to happen. Not five teams. I said three,
- 32:45Speaker 2: maybe four. Let's just see how the next month. The
- 32:47Speaker 2: next month is going to be telling. October is kind
- 32:49Speaker 2: of the call the cows home month for the SEC
- 32:52Speaker 2: because so many teams, all the teams are playing good teams,
- 32:55Speaker 2: and there's going to be a lot of attrition, and
- 32:57Speaker 2: there's going to be some losses that we don't see coming.
- 33:00Speaker 2: But I think when you see what's happening in the
- 33:03Speaker 2: Big Ten, then Oregon may be down. Michigan is not
- 33:05Speaker 2: going to be a player. USC, they were kind of
- 33:07Speaker 2: a false pretender as well probably. After that beatdown they
- 33:12Speaker 2: took to Oregon, Penn State loses to Wisconsin. Indiana may
- 33:17Speaker 2: not be the team that we thought they were, even
- 33:19Speaker 2: though they're 4-0, that the SEC could possibly land up
- 33:23Speaker 2: to five teams in the playoff. He says if you
- 33:24Speaker 2: hate the SEC, you may want to close your eyes
- 33:26Speaker 2: for a few paragraphs. He said each week I do
- 33:28Speaker 2: the college football playoff bracket projections here, and a popular
- 33:32Speaker 2: complaint is that too many SEC schools are in the field.
- 33:35Speaker 2: He said if you feel that way, I've got bad news.
- 33:37Speaker 2: That could be a banner year for SEC teams, including,
- 33:41Speaker 2: you know, including the CFP. He says a year ago
- 33:44Speaker 2: the SEC put five teams into the field, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma,
- 33:49Speaker 2: Ole Miss, and Texas A & M. He said the
- 33:51Speaker 2: conventional wisdom headed into this season, the 26th season, is
- 33:55Speaker 2: that that number would go down as the SEC moved
- 33:57Speaker 2: to a nine-game conference slate. That may prove to be
- 34:00Speaker 2: true as conference play ramps up in this month. But
- 34:06Speaker 2: looking at it this, you know, one month in, he
- 34:08Speaker 2: still has Texas at number one at 4-0 He said
- 34:11Speaker 2: something feels a bit off about this team. Arch Manning
- 34:15Speaker 2: hasn't impressed in recent weeks. Players have committed some truly
- 34:20Speaker 2: dumb penalties in key moments, but they did get the
- 34:23Speaker 2: win against Ohio State. They did go get the win
- 34:25Speaker 2: against Tennessee. They are number one Ohio State. Number two,
- 34:28Speaker 2: he has them as the Big Ten champion. Texas is
- 34:32Speaker 2: the SEC champion. Number three, he has Miami as the
- 34:36Speaker 2: ACC champion. He said the Hurricanes have been utterly dominant
- 34:41Speaker 2: a quarter of the way through the 2026 season. As
- 34:44Speaker 2: Brandon Marcello pointed out earlier this week, Miami quarterback Darian
- 34:47Speaker 2: Mintz is the only quarterback in the last 30 years
- 34:49Speaker 2: to have more touchdowns, 14, than incompletions. Now, I want
- 34:53Speaker 2: you to think about that. I don't care who you
- 34:55Speaker 2: are and who you play. I don't care if it's
- 34:59Speaker 2: a junior high team, if it's a flag football game,
- 35:04Speaker 2: powder putt, whatever. Mensah through four games has more touchdowns
- 35:09Speaker 2: than incompletions. That is insanity in the best of ways.
- 35:13Speaker 2: That has, I mean, that's a 30 year, that beats
- 35:16Speaker 2: a 30 year mark. It looks like Miami, at least early,
- 35:21Speaker 2: whatever they paid Darian Mensah is worth it because I
- 35:25Speaker 2: know we're talking about Camario Taylor, rightfully so. And I
- 35:27Speaker 2: know we're talking about Trinidad Chambliss, rightfully so. Darian Mensah
- 35:31Speaker 2: to me is the, bona fide front runner for the
- 35:34Speaker 2: Heisman Trophy. Now, he's got to prove it in some
- 35:36Speaker 2: big games, but man, the way he has played has
- 35:38Speaker 2: been unbelievable. Miami's looked unstoppable so far, to be honest,
- 35:43Speaker 2: and they've got a couple games coming up, Clemson and
- 35:45Speaker 2: Florida State that may be a little more challenging, but
- 35:47Speaker 2: he's got Miami at three, Georgia at number four, and
- 35:50Speaker 2: you could make a lot of arguments for Georgia at
- 35:51Speaker 2: number one. They have owned Texas up to this point
- 35:55Speaker 2: since they have walked into the SEC, but right now
- 35:58Speaker 2: he's got Georgia at four, Notre Dame at five, and again,
- 36:01Speaker 2: it's going to be hard for Notre Dame to get
- 36:04Speaker 2: higher than five, just because they don't play a conference championship. Now,
- 36:08Speaker 2: if they were to go undefeated and beat Miami in.
- 36:11Speaker 3: November, they're going to have a very strong say, let
- 36:17Speaker 3: me say it like that, a very strong say on
- 36:20Speaker 3: being number one in the country, but they've got to
- 36:22Speaker 3: go undefeated to do it.
- 36:23Speaker 2: Indiana at number six, the Hoosiers are very fortunate to
- 36:25Speaker 2: have escaped a win with a win against Northwestern. Signetti
- 36:29Speaker 2: deserves the benefit of the doubt, but this team Phil's
- 36:32Speaker 2: a step or two below the one that ran through
- 36:34Speaker 2: the Big Ten a season ago. Now they'll have an
- 36:37Speaker 2: opportunity coming up against Ohio State and Michigan back-to-back weeks.
- 36:40Speaker 2: That'll be in the middle of October. Indiana will have
- 36:43Speaker 2: an opportunity to prove their worth there. Alabama at number
- 36:46Speaker 2: seven in John Talti's playoff bracket. Florida has moved in
- 36:51Speaker 2: now to number eight. And again, I think everything's on
- 36:54Speaker 2: the table for Florida. And again, we said at the
- 36:57Speaker 2: beginning of the year, if A couple of teams are
- 37:01Speaker 2: going to move into the playoff conversation in the SEC.
- 37:04Speaker 2: A couple teams have to move out. There's just not
- 37:07Speaker 2: enough room for all of them. So what has happened
- 37:09Speaker 2: is Oklahoma, who was a playoff team, has moved out
- 37:14Speaker 2: a month in. Texas A & M, who was a
- 37:16Speaker 2: playoff team, has moved out. That's opened the door for
- 37:21Speaker 2: a team like Florida, who looks really good right now,
- 37:23Speaker 2: to move in. And guess what? That also means a
- 37:26Speaker 2: team like Mississippi State, who has looked really good a
- 37:29Speaker 2: month in to at least move into that conversation piece.
- 37:33Speaker 2: They're at the table. That could change over the next
- 37:35Speaker 2: few weeks. But you've had two teams move out, and
- 37:38Speaker 2: now you've had two teams move in. And it's really
- 37:41Speaker 2: cluttered right there because, you know, even with Tennessee, they
- 37:44Speaker 2: have a loss. They feel like they could have won.
- 37:48Speaker 2: They're still in that conversation. So we've got a long
- 37:49Speaker 2: way to go. Texas Tech at number nine out of
- 37:52Speaker 2: the Big 12, and they're going to be the favorite
- 37:54Speaker 2: to win the Big 12 until they don't. BYU will
- 38:00Speaker 2: give them all they want. And there's a couple other
- 38:02Speaker 2: teams as well. He has Iowa at number 10 at 4-0.
- 38:07Speaker 2: And the Hawkeyes could possibly, believe it or not, sneak
- 38:11Speaker 2: into this playoff conversation. They will likely get beat this
- 38:15Speaker 2: weekend against Ohio State. But again, that would give them
- 38:20Speaker 2: just one loss on the season so far. And when
- 38:24Speaker 2: you look at Iowa real quickly in the remaining schedule,
- 38:29Speaker 2: Let's see here. Where did they go? There they are.
- 38:31Speaker 2: All right, so Iowa, they're west of the way. And
- 38:34Speaker 2: this is a team that beat Michigan on the Hail
- 38:36Speaker 2: Mary this past week. They have Ohio State this week.
- 38:40Speaker 2: They go to Washington and Minnesota. Washington will be a test,
- 38:43Speaker 2: but they should beat Minnesota. Wisconsin at Northwestern, Purdue at
- 38:47Speaker 2: Illinois and Nebraska. So this is a team that could
- 38:49Speaker 2: actually run the table, believe it or not, after this week.
- 38:53Speaker 2: So I don't know that you're going to keep a
- 38:56Speaker 2: 10-1 or 11-1 defense Iowa team out of the playoff.
- 39:00Speaker 2: And I see his rationale on putting Iowa now at
- 39:03Speaker 2: number 10. Number 11, he still has Ole Miss in
- 39:06Speaker 2: the playoffs. He said Ole Miss still has two quality wins,
- 39:08Speaker 2: LSU and Louisville. Multiple opportunities to add to that number.
- 39:12Speaker 2: You know the schedule. Boise at number 12 as the
- 39:16Speaker 2: lone group of six team. He has Boise playing Notre
- 39:19Speaker 2: Dame in that 5-12 matchup. And again, that's everybody's 5-12
- 39:22Speaker 2: right now. Ole Miss is an 11 traveling to Indiana.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Iowa traveling to Alabama. And Texas Tech traveling to Florida.
- 39:30Speaker 2: And then he has Texas taking on the, you know, Florida,
- 39:34Speaker 2: Texas Tech winner down the field we go. And let's
- 39:37Speaker 2: see here. He doesn't crown a national champion, but his
- 39:39Speaker 2: final four, but he doesn't even do that. So he
- 39:41Speaker 2: just puts the dates in there. So some interesting stuff there.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Let me get you, we've got a couple minutes left here.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Some news, notes maybe that we missed. Rivals is reporting
- 39:53Speaker 2: that Mississippi State is pushing to flip Colorado four-star offensive
- 39:56Speaker 2: tackle LaMarcus Jones, courtesy of Chad Simmons. Vanderbilt and Purdue
- 40:01Speaker 2: are also in pursuit as well. So you're going to
- 40:05Speaker 2: see some of that. Mississippi State, look, winning cures a lot,
- 40:07Speaker 2: and you're going to see more heads turned to head
- 40:10Speaker 2: to Starkville. Also, Polymarket reporting the NFL has slashed ticket
- 40:15Speaker 2: prices for the London game between the Colts and Washington
- 40:18Speaker 2: due to a lack of interest. And, again, I've always
- 40:20Speaker 2: wondered about this. I know that a lot of these
- 40:23Speaker 2: games seem to have a lot of interest to them,
- 40:25Speaker 2: but then I'm sure there's some that don't, but they
- 40:26Speaker 2: are slashing ticket prices. Hey, if you want to get
- 40:28Speaker 2: over to London and watch a little football, they've got
- 40:30Speaker 2: them there as well. And let's see here. Looking at
- 40:35Speaker 2: a couple more things real quickly. Yeah, it's funny. College
- 40:41Speaker 2: Sports only puts out kind of a meme out here
- 40:45Speaker 2: of Mississippi State taking the place of what we said.
- 40:48Speaker 2: Texas A & M and Oklahoma, they've worked themselves out.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Mississippi State, Florida, they have kind of worked themselves in. Also,
- 40:57Speaker 2: Nick Saban continued to get a lot of negative press
- 40:59Speaker 2: because of this College Sports Act. On first take, Saban
- 41:03Speaker 2: argued that player and coach pay are totally different markets.
- 41:07Speaker 2: And a lot of people giving him the business about these, saying, hey, look,
- 41:12Speaker 2: you were a guy that was all about the players,
- 41:14Speaker 2: all about the players. I mean, Saban's kind of gone
- 41:16Speaker 2: all over the board here. with this College Sports Act
- 41:20Speaker 2: that's out here. And let's see here. One more note. Again,
- 41:25Speaker 2: Heisman frontrunners, regardless of who you look at, Jeremiah Smith,
- 41:29Speaker 2: Ohio State, rightfully so, Darien Minson, Miami. Then you've got
- 41:32Speaker 2: Jaden Ball, Trinidad Chambliss, Kamario Taylor. That's the five guys
- 41:36Speaker 2: that's getting the most chatter at least one month in
- 41:40Speaker 2: on everything with the Heisman Trophy. I want to say
- 41:43Speaker 2: thanks to Jake Thompson. Also, thanks to Heath Hinton. Thanks
- 41:46Speaker 2: to Beave. Appreciate you guys. We're out a little bit
- 41:48Speaker 2: early today. We'll be back tomorrow. As we continue, we
- 41:51Speaker 2: get to the middle of the week. We'll start looking
- 41:52Speaker 2: at high school football, really dialing in on lines and
- 41:55Speaker 2: stuff as we move towards the middle of the week. Remember,
- 41:57Speaker 2: ketchup is king, bacon is a delicacy. Aloha means goodbye.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Be a man of increase. We have reached the crescendo
- 42:02Speaker 2: on a Tuesday. See you tomorrow. We'll be right back.
