Latest / Ross and Rizzo Unfiltered / Yankees SWEPT by Rays, Brewers & Dodgers ADVANCE to NLCS, Guardians SURVIVE White Sox | MLB Reaction
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Like we just keep doing the same thing every year
- 0:02Speaker 1: and we don't win. Right. That's insanity. That's the definition
- 0:05Speaker 1: of insanity. If you think it's going to change.
- 0:07Speaker 2: It's World Series or bust. You know, it's championship or bust.
- 0:10Speaker 1: But it's not. That's the thing. That's the thing there
- 0:13Speaker 1: is like they don't earn that right anymore. And I
- 0:15Speaker 1: love everyone there. But like you can't just walk into
- 0:19Speaker 1: every spring and say it's World Series or bust. Can you?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Welcome back to another episode of the Ross and Rizzo
- 0:28Speaker 1: show unfiltered. I'm Anthony Rizzo with my partner, David Ross. Rossi,
- 0:34Speaker 1: another amazing slate of games. All four division series games underway.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Guardians win nine to three to extend the series. The
- 0:43Speaker 1: Dodgers take care of business and beat the Braves four
- 0:46Speaker 1: to one. The Rays sweep the Yankees and the Brewers
- 0:51Speaker 1: win three to one to advance the to the championship series,
- 0:56Speaker 1: the National League championship series set, the American League championship series.
- 1:02Speaker 1: One of those teams has their ticket punched. Rossi, the
- 1:06Speaker 1: Tampa Bay Rays sweeping the New York Yankees. Is that
- 1:10Speaker 1: a statement? Is that a shock? Tell me what you think.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Man, I just think, you know, I said it earlier.
- 1:16Speaker 3: I think everybody who doesn't follow baseball is like, what
- 1:21Speaker 3: do you mean the Rays beat the Yankees? it's kind
- 1:23Speaker 3: of what happened all year. The Rays are a really
- 1:25Speaker 3: good team, a solid team. And it looked like New York,
- 1:30Speaker 3: you know, going in there, you knew it was going
- 1:31Speaker 3: to be loud. You know how hectic it is. You
- 1:33Speaker 3: played there like as a visiting player, especially in the
- 1:36Speaker 3: post season, that place is a tough place to play,
- 1:38Speaker 3: but the Rays are used to it. They're not going
- 1:40Speaker 3: to be intimidated by that environment. They've done it all year.
- 1:45Speaker 3: And I, I said it before. I think they're just
- 1:48Speaker 3: a better team this year. You know, We can go back,
- 1:51Speaker 3: and I'm sure all the headlines in New York in
- 1:54Speaker 3: the morning will be like, fire this guy, rebuild, all
- 2:00Speaker 3: this crap. Man, they've got Spencer Jones, Lombard Jr. They've
- 2:03Speaker 3: got a great staff. Wells, Judge wasn't there, your horse,
- 2:09Speaker 3: one of the best players in the game. I'm not
- 2:11Speaker 3: blaming it on that, but it would have been a
- 2:13Speaker 3: more competitive series if him and Giancarlo were healthy. leading
- 2:17Speaker 3: up to the postseason and being able to be in
- 2:20Speaker 3: the lineup every day in the postseason. Like, there's a
- 2:23Speaker 3: lot to be positive about in New York, in my opinion.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Like, it's real.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I think it's fixing to get really good. They've got
- 2:30Speaker 3: some holes to fill, some guys that are free agents.
- 2:34Speaker 2: But what a statement by the Rays. We know how
- 2:38Speaker 2: good they are.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Pitching, the defense, the base running, the pressure. You know,
- 2:45Speaker 3: it was a complete game by them and just continued
- 2:49Speaker 3: to come. There were some moments there that it felt
- 2:51Speaker 3: like the Yankees just couldn't break through. And then Victor
- 2:54Speaker 3: Mesa Jr. left on left off Max Freed to run
- 2:58Speaker 3: Homer to seal the deal. Yeah, congratulations, Tampa Bay Rays.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Like, it was great.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Yeah, Kevin Cash, that whole organization, they've been the Yankees kryptonite,
- 3:09Speaker 1: it seems like, for years. Definitely when I was there,
- 3:12Speaker 1: they were the team we wanted to beat. For sure. And, dude,
- 3:19Speaker 1: the one thing that I don't like about when these
- 3:23Speaker 1: teams win now, and maybe this is because I felt
- 3:26Speaker 1: like when we lost to the Dodgers in 2024, they
- 3:29Speaker 1: just absolutely shit on us as a team, right? Instead
- 3:33Speaker 1: of celebrating, you see guys like you saw Caminero Jr.
- 3:37Speaker 1: sweeping on the field and kind of mocking the.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Oh, Yankees lose.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. You know, like, I loved it.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I love it.
- 3:46Speaker 1: When in our game did it turn to winning, right?
- 3:49Speaker 1: We're all trying to compete and win. And then once
- 3:51Speaker 1: you win, you just start talking shit to the opposing
- 3:53Speaker 1: people's fans and players.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm with you on that. Like, probably not. Hey,
- 4:00Speaker 3: did you see the clip?
- 4:01Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Like, Kevin Cash, Victor Mesa Jr. hit that home run
- 4:06Speaker 3: and just, like, stood there and stood in the dugout.
- 4:10Speaker 3: And Cash, he was like, Cash, he was like, fuck yeah.
- 4:14Speaker 2: And then he was like, run. I pointed at him
- 4:17Speaker 2: like old school, run motherfucker. Like we don't show people up,
- 4:20Speaker 2: you know, that old school manager he is.
- 4:23Speaker 1: But I love- It looked like Mason Jr. was looking
- 4:26Speaker 1: in the, it looked like Mason Jr. was looking in
- 4:28Speaker 1: the Yankees dugout as he was rounding first base too.
- 4:31Speaker 1: They didn't show the replays on, on the broadcast.
- 4:34Speaker 3: I bet they got a chance, you know, like that
- 4:37Speaker 3: whole smaller market and, you know, there's gotta be a
- 4:41Speaker 3: little bit of a chip there. And, and you know,
- 4:43Speaker 3: as well as I do, when you go into post season,
- 4:45Speaker 3: you got to prove it to beat the big dogs. Right.
- 4:47Speaker 3: And I know the Rays outplayed them during the regular season,
- 4:51Speaker 3: but that ain't the post season. And so just like
- 4:53Speaker 3: you're seeing with some of these other organizations or these other, um, series, you,
- 4:58Speaker 3: you got to go in and.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Beat the, the, the big dogs, you know, somebody's got
- 5:01Speaker 2: to beat the Dodgers.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Somebody's got to knock them off their, their perch, you know,
- 5:05Speaker 3: two time defending world champs, but it, uh, You know,
- 5:09Speaker 3: I just think it's such a statement win.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Your boy Volpe, how about the home run?
- 5:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:14Speaker 2: How about the home run?
- 5:15Speaker 1: I mean, the cream of the crop always rises, Rossi, right?
- 5:19Speaker 1: And the Rays certainly proved that. Volpe, on the other hand,
- 5:23Speaker 1: what you just said, man, the regular shots look like
- 5:28Speaker 1: a home run, and then you get all the different
- 5:29Speaker 1: camera angles, and the fan clearly reached over. I definitely
- 5:33Speaker 1: think that the umpires got it right.
- 5:36Speaker 3: And....
- 5:38Speaker 1: I mean, but what a change in momentum there. I
- 5:44Speaker 1: know they still scored one run, but to tie the
- 5:46Speaker 1: game there, the place was going crazy. All the fans
- 5:50Speaker 1: were going crazy. It was a big moment for Volpe
- 5:52Speaker 1: with everything he's been through this year.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:54Speaker 1: And obviously they fall short. And, Rossi, you're saying you
- 5:59Speaker 1: look at this team with a lot of optimism. Well,
- 6:02Speaker 1: me playing on that team and seeing it's the same
- 6:05Speaker 1: thing every single year, right? Every year. Now we can
- 6:09Speaker 1: go back and say, well, we have this, this, and this.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And Judge was hurt, and Giancarlo was hurt. But they
- 6:16Speaker 1: had the best pitching they've ever had this year. And
- 6:19Speaker 1: the bats just fell short.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Ben Rice had the best season. Ben Rice had his
- 6:24Speaker 2: career year.
- 6:26Speaker 1: So, I don't know. If you talk to people there,
- 6:32Speaker 1: Yankees fans, people on the inside, they almost think it's insanity.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Like we just keep doing the same thing every year
- 6:40Speaker 1: and we don't win.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:42Speaker 1: That's insanity. That's the definition of insanity. If you think
- 6:45Speaker 1: it's going to change.
- 6:47Speaker 2: No, I'm with you. I, I just, I don't know
- 6:49Speaker 2: what needs to change. Like, well, Grisham's gone. Like he
- 6:53Speaker 2: was kind of an aging player.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:55Speaker 3: And had a really good season last year. And then
- 6:58Speaker 3: jazz is gone. Like Volpe is going to fill in there.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:02Speaker 3: So you've got some youth up the middle and in
- 7:05Speaker 3: center field with Jones and You got Ben Rice, who
- 7:08Speaker 3: is an absolute horse. And we just got to keep
- 7:12Speaker 3: the dudes healthy. Like, Judge has to stay healthy, unfortunately.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Like, I'm with you.
- 7:16Speaker 1: But that's the thing, Rossi. That's the thing. There's optimism.
- 7:21Speaker 1: You cannot look at this lineup and not be optimistic
- 7:24Speaker 1: about it. But they don't win. They can't beat the
- 7:28Speaker 1: good teams. Right? And that's just how it's been year
- 7:32Speaker 1: after year. We got to the World Series in 2024.
- 7:35Speaker 1: We stabbed ourselves in the in the gut multiple times, right?
- 7:39Speaker 1: We give up a walk-off grand slam in game one.
- 7:42Speaker 1: We have a terrible inning in the game five, right?
- 7:45Speaker 1: And it's like, those are the things that just keep
- 7:47Speaker 1: piling up now for the Yankees. So as a player,
- 7:51Speaker 1: it's frustrated because obviously we all want to win. But
- 7:57Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know what it is. I
- 7:58Speaker 1: can't sit here and tell you, oh, this needs to
- 8:00Speaker 1: change or that needs to change. I maybe have some opinions.
- 8:04Speaker 3: But What would be one? Give me, give me, give
- 8:08Speaker 3: me one, just one thought. Like if you, when you
- 8:10Speaker 3: watch that team and I know you're close with a
- 8:12Speaker 3: lot of those guys, is there one guy on the
- 8:15Speaker 3: free agent market or one area you're like, I would
- 8:18Speaker 3: go get another middle of the bat or, you know, what,
- 8:21Speaker 3: what would, what do you think you would, would do
- 8:24Speaker 3: if you were running the Yankees?
- 8:27Speaker 1: I mean, I probably go and sign Louisa rise. Honestly,
- 8:31Speaker 1: I thought I said at the trade deadline, they should
- 8:33Speaker 1: try and go pro. They should try and go trade
- 8:36Speaker 1: for him, right? And because he adds that contact, you
- 8:40Speaker 1: see what he did with the Phillies. He was hitting
- 8:41Speaker 1: fourth and fifth because he drives and runs. So if
- 8:44Speaker 1: you're going to have a lot of slugging on base guys,
- 8:46Speaker 1: I think you need to equal it out. You know,
- 8:48Speaker 1: the Nico Horners of the world who put the ball
- 8:51Speaker 1: in play and just extend at bats. It looks like
- 8:54Speaker 1: George Lombard Jr. will be that guy. He looks very
- 8:59Speaker 1: poised to take major steps next year. But again, you
- 9:03Speaker 1: don't know.
- 9:04Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 9:05Speaker 1: And we're talking about one of the highest payrolls in
- 9:08Speaker 1: the game and a fan base that expects to win
- 9:10Speaker 1: every single year that they haven't won since 2009. So
- 9:15Speaker 1: I was talking to Chad Bowling, the great mental skills
- 9:23Speaker 1: performance coach for the Yankees. He works for them and
- 9:26Speaker 1: he works for the Dallas Cowboys. And we were talking
- 9:29Speaker 1: before one of the playoff games, and I'm like, I wonder...
- 9:32Speaker 1: I'm just trying to look back, right? I'm looking at
- 9:34Speaker 1: this from a different lens now, now that I'm not
- 9:36Speaker 1: there in the clubhouse all the time. I'm like, I
- 9:39Speaker 1: wonder if on the inside of the ropes there, in
- 9:44Speaker 1: the clubhouse, there's just... It's such a pressure cooker to win, right?
- 9:50Speaker 1: And you see how amazing the Yankees played in the
- 9:54Speaker 1: Red Sox series. And it's like, I wonder... since it's
- 9:57Speaker 1: such a pressure cooker and they do play well in
- 9:59Speaker 1: those two games, it's like everyone exhales so big that
- 10:04Speaker 1: it's hard to get back to that level because of
- 10:08Speaker 1: the pressure that's put on there every single day. I
- 10:10Speaker 1: don't know. We're baseball players. We're paid to win. But
- 10:15Speaker 1: what I do know, Rossi, is.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Jazz Chisholm's comments after the game are just, like, just
- 10:24Speaker 1: looks like a player who's lost because. Oh, I didn't
- 10:27Speaker 1: see it.
- 10:27Speaker 2: What did he say? I didn't see. I went to Ben.
- 10:29Speaker 1: They asked him about being booed, right? He got benched
- 10:33Speaker 1: in game three.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:34Speaker 1: He comes in. He goes 0 for 2. Almost grounds
- 10:39Speaker 1: into the game-ending double play, but he's such a fast player.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Beats it out.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Steals a big bag. They had a chance there at
- 10:46Speaker 2: the end. Steals a big bag. Totally.
- 10:48Speaker 3: I mean.
- 10:49Speaker 1: But he says after the game about being booed. He's like, yeah,
- 10:51Speaker 1: I don't understand. I was confused as to why I
- 10:55Speaker 1: was being booed. Like, I'm helping, trying to see this
- 10:58Speaker 1: team win. And I'm just sitting there like, dude. And
- 11:03Speaker 1: he did clarify, you know, actually it doesn't surprise me
- 11:05Speaker 1: later on, Aaron Judge got booed as well here. But
- 11:09Speaker 1: it surprises you that you got booed? What do you mean?
- 11:14Speaker 1: You've played there for three plus years now. You've seen
- 11:18Speaker 1: Volpe get ran out of town. You've seen Judgey get booed.
- 11:22Speaker 1: You've seen Stanton get booed. He's been booed a lot.
- 11:25Speaker 1: It surprises you that you got booed? Like, that's just
- 11:29Speaker 1: not the right way to answer questions. And on the
- 11:33Speaker 1: other end, you hear Acuna Jr. saying that he got
- 11:36Speaker 1: booed as well. And he's like, yeah, I understand. The
- 11:38Speaker 1: fans are frustrated. I didn't play well.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Right?
- 11:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:41Speaker 3: And you've got to know, like, Well, here, you know
- 11:44Speaker 3: this as good as anybody, Mike. You got to have
- 11:47Speaker 3: thick skin to play there. And, you know, one of
- 11:50Speaker 3: the things about being a Yankee from the outside, it's
- 11:53Speaker 3: like you better be able to handle some adversity when
- 11:57Speaker 3: it comes to fans because, you know, they've set the expectations.
- 12:01Speaker 2: And I did see Judge after the game talk a
- 12:04Speaker 2: little bit.
- 12:05Speaker 3: And, excuse me, he was saying, yeah, like, unfortunately, there's
- 12:11Speaker 3: a lot to look forward to, same as you, but.
- 12:13Speaker 3: we didn't win and it's world series or bust, you know,
- 12:17Speaker 3: it's championship.
- 12:18Speaker 1: That's the thing. That's the thing there is like, they
- 12:21Speaker 1: don't earn that right anymore. And I love everyone there,
- 12:24Speaker 1: but like, you can't just walk into every spring and
- 12:27Speaker 1: say it's a world series or bust. Can you?
- 12:30Speaker 2: I like that. Yeah.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Well, well, I think, yeah, I think the Dodgers it's
- 12:34Speaker 3: world series. You create that narrative and they hadn't had
- 12:39Speaker 3: that a long time. I think it's probably, he's probably
- 12:41Speaker 3: speaking on behalf of, the fans and saying like we
- 12:47Speaker 3: understand the high expectations here and we're not living up
- 12:49Speaker 3: to them kind of thing but yeah i get what
- 12:51Speaker 3: you're saying yeah you're you're i i actually really agree
- 12:54Speaker 3: with that statement it it they haven't earned the right
- 12:57Speaker 3: to be world series of bus the dodgers have you
- 13:00Speaker 3: that's that that's 100 true.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Right like when you when you and i understand the
- 13:04Speaker 1: teams that they field it should be that way but
- 13:07Speaker 1: when you walk into spring training there and that I
- 13:13Speaker 1: don't even know if this sounds soft or not.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:15Speaker 1: But like you walk in, it's like right away, it's
- 13:18Speaker 1: world series or bus. I'm like, bro, let's, let's fucking
- 13:21Speaker 1: get to know each other first. You know what I mean?
- 13:24Speaker 2: It's a little backwards.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Right, right, right. I'm not kidding. The first, the first
- 13:28Speaker 1: time I, when I got traded, I don't know if
- 13:30Speaker 1: I've ever told this story out loud or to the public.
- 13:34Speaker 1: The first time I got traded or to me, I
- 13:36Speaker 1: hadn't heard this from Chicago, right? We go to Miami.
- 13:39Speaker 1: The motions are high. Um, I get to the Marlins
- 13:44Speaker 1: Park and it's an interleague game. So they're asking me,
- 13:49Speaker 1: right when I get there, they start asking me all
- 13:51Speaker 1: these questions about bunt defense, this and that, my style.
- 13:54Speaker 1: And I go, literally the first thing in my head,
- 13:56Speaker 1: I go is, yo, everyone in this clubhouse needs to
- 13:59Speaker 1: take a fucking Xanax. Like, I fucking just walked in
- 14:04Speaker 1: here five minutes ago. Like, I don't even want to
- 14:09Speaker 1: be here at the moment because I was so devastated
- 14:11Speaker 1: from being traded, right?
- 14:14Speaker 2: Yeah, traded.
- 14:15Speaker 1: The whole world gets rocked. Obviously, I love being a
- 14:18Speaker 1: Yankee and love being there. But my first thought was like,
- 14:21Speaker 1: what the fuck, man? Can we just go play a
- 14:23Speaker 1: baseball game? Like, get to know each other for a second?
- 14:26Speaker 1: But that's... That's a great story, bro. That's the intensity
- 14:29Speaker 1: that comes with playing there. And over the course year
- 14:34Speaker 1: in and year out, I just feel like that intensity
- 14:36Speaker 1: and that pressure just slow. And as a player, you
- 14:39Speaker 1: don't really try to let it affect you, but How
- 14:42Speaker 1: can it not affect you, right?
- 14:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. No, great points, great story.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I want to circle back just as we wrap up
- 14:49Speaker 3: the Yankees' raise and give the Rays their flowers. Kevin Cash,
- 14:53Speaker 3: the bullpen, the pitching stood out. Like, big home run,
- 14:58Speaker 3: Ryan Valade, get things started. He's a lefty masher. And
- 15:01Speaker 3: then Kevin Cash, you know, having those platoon guys and
- 15:04Speaker 3: going with Victor Mesa, like, that was absolutely, you know,
- 15:09Speaker 3: left on left, hard to do, Max Freed. is a beast,
- 15:12Speaker 3: and the fact he stepped up and they closed it
- 15:14Speaker 3: out was really impressive. So, flowers to the Rays. Congratulations.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Drama in New York. We love it.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Hey, the cream of the crop rises, right? The Rays winning,
- 15:26Speaker 1: the Brewers winning. These teams have been the best teams
- 15:28Speaker 1: in the league, and they're moving on to the championship series,
- 15:32Speaker 1: and it's going to be fun baseball to watch. One thing, too, Rossi,
- 15:36Speaker 1: with the Yankees. I saw this online, and I was like, ooh, okay.
- 15:41Speaker 1: This is what some random person said, right? They get
- 15:46Speaker 1: eliminated because of sloppy baseball and a boomer bus lineup.
- 15:49Speaker 1: People may say, but at least we make the playoffs
- 15:52Speaker 1: every year. Sure, except after years of being bumped from
- 15:55Speaker 1: the playoffs, you eventually want to stop being an above-average,
- 15:58Speaker 1: mediocre team who loses because of lack of basic fundamentals.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Last year, they get bumped to the— Blue Jays. They
- 16:09Speaker 1: beat the Red Sox. They lose to the Blue Jays.
- 16:11Speaker 1: This year, beat the Red Sox, lose to the Red Sox.
- 16:12Speaker 1: That's almost worse than losing to a Guardians or White
- 16:16Speaker 1: Sox or Twins or another playoff team because they're your
- 16:19Speaker 1: division rivals, right?
- 16:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:22Speaker 1: The Yankees have the only general manager across the four
- 16:26Speaker 1: major sports who still sits with the same team since
- 16:30Speaker 1: the 90s. Something has to change. Unfortunately, it won't because
- 16:36Speaker 1: they'll just say, They lost since Aaron Judge was hurt.
- 16:41Speaker 1: And it feels like every year there, it's like, yeah, well,
- 16:45Speaker 1: this happened, this happened, this happened. And I don't know.
- 16:49Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I'm very invested in those players.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:53Speaker 2: And he's a Hall of Famer. Cashman's a Hall of Famer.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:57Speaker 1: No doubt. I like Brian Cashman. I had a great
- 17:00Speaker 1: relationship with him. I loved Aaron Boone. Had a great
- 17:03Speaker 1: relationship with them. I'm invested in the players in that clubhouse.
- 17:08Speaker 1: so happy for Volpe, gutted for Judge not being able
- 17:12Speaker 1: to play in this, I know he was, but, yeah.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Like you said, the raise, man, is what you're saying,
- 17:19Speaker 3: sometimes change.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Is necessary, yeah, for me, shit, when I got, dude,
- 17:22Speaker 1: when I got traded, like I said, when I walked
- 17:24Speaker 1: in there the first day, I didn't want to be there, right,
- 17:26Speaker 1: I wanted to stay with the Cubs my whole career, then,
- 17:29Speaker 1: you give me four years being a Yankee, it was
- 17:32Speaker 1: the best thing that's ever happened in my career, it
- 17:35Speaker 1: revived me, it refreshed me, like, I loved it. So
- 17:39Speaker 1: I didn't know that that change needed to happen until
- 17:41Speaker 1: it happened. And I was presented in front of me.
- 17:43Speaker 3: There's something about the warm summer air and a cold
- 17:46Speaker 3: Corona with lime that makes the roar of the crowd
- 17:48Speaker 3: sound a lot like the roar of the waves.
- 17:50Speaker 1: That's because this is our playa and the best seats
- 17:53Speaker 1: are always wherever you're sitting.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Whether it's a weeknight game under the lights or a
- 17:57Speaker 3: Sunday afternoon in the sun, you know, baseball isn't about
- 18:00Speaker 3: rushing around. It's about settling in, letting the game come
- 18:03Speaker 3: to you and nothing pairs better than Than an ice
- 18:06Speaker 3: cold Corona.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Nothing.
- 18:09Speaker 1: So find your seat. Your Corona. And your line. Because
- 18:13Speaker 1: real fans know. The only thing better than nine innings.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Is extra innings. Especially on La Playa. Corona. La Playa awaits.

- 18:35Speaker 1: What's up, guys?
- 18:36Speaker 3: I need to tell you about this new prediction market
- 18:38Speaker 3: called PolyMarket. It's the best new way to trade in sports.
- 18:42Speaker 3: In the past, if you wanted action on the game,
- 18:44Speaker 3: you put some money in, and if your team was
- 18:46Speaker 3: doing well and you wanted to cash out, they'd lock
- 18:49Speaker 3: the trade and take a huge fee. But PolyMarket is
- 18:52Speaker 3: a prediction market. It's a stock exchange for sports, buying
- 18:55Speaker 3: in and selling out on your terms. I've tried them all,
- 18:58Speaker 3: and PolyMarket is simply the best prediction market, better than DraftKings, FanDuel, Calshi,
- 19:04Speaker 3: you name it. They're so confident you'll never go back
- 19:06Speaker 3: to the other guys. They're giving you a free $ 25
- 19:09Speaker 3: on your first trade when you deposit.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Just $ 10.
- 19:10Speaker 3: And now they've launched a new feature, Squads, a group
- 19:14Speaker 3: chat where you can see what everyone is trading. So
- 19:17Speaker 3: download the Polymarket app today and use the code ROSSRIZZO
- 19:21Speaker 3: when you sign up. That's code ROSSRIZZO and get $ 25
- 19:25Speaker 3: free after you deposit just $ 10.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Brewers, Padres. What a game. What a series.
- 19:33Speaker 2: What a series.
- 19:34Speaker 1: I just feel like that was two heavyweights, huh?
- 19:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, you know, it was again, Jackson Chirio.
- 19:43Speaker 3: What a stud, bro. This guy, MVP of that series.
- 19:51Speaker 3: I thought it was the Garrett Mitchell game. The huge play,
- 19:53Speaker 3: Tatis hits the ball. I mean, Garrett Mitchell, first of all, single,
- 19:57Speaker 3: gets an RBI. And later in the game, the big
- 20:01Speaker 3: rob of the home run from Machado. Tatis goes deep. Bro,
- 20:07Speaker 3: the Padres didn't get a hit after Chirio. Tatis hit
- 20:10Speaker 3: the homer in the third. They didn't get a hit. Like,
- 20:13Speaker 3: the Brewers pitching, you know, we talked so much about
- 20:16Speaker 3: this series coming into it in the Padres' bullpen, but
- 20:20Speaker 3: the Brewers had the best bullpen in the league coming
- 20:24Speaker 3: into the game, and I didn't know that statistically, and
- 20:29Speaker 3: they proved it.
- 20:30Speaker 2: They proved it. The Padres were on a heater. They
- 20:32Speaker 2: were rolling. We know about all their, you know, how well.
- 20:37Speaker 3: They played the second half, how good their bullpen was,
- 20:40Speaker 3: and they pieced it together well, and they were intense games.
- 20:44Speaker 3: The Padre fans showed out, and I just thought it
- 20:47Speaker 3: was a great series. It was a must-watch baseball, a
- 20:50Speaker 3: lot of drama.
- 20:51Speaker 2: We had some great.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Quotes there from Pat Murphy on that catch, from Merrill
- 21:00Speaker 3: last night. I mean, yeah, and You know, absolutely amazing series.
- 21:06Speaker 3: And congratulations to the Brewers.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Big hits. They just played Brewer baseball, man.
- 21:11Speaker 3: And it just felt like the Padres couldn't get anything
- 21:14Speaker 3: going other than some traffic from walks. It was so lopsided.
- 21:21Speaker 3: The Brewers had 10 hits. The Padres had three. So
- 21:25Speaker 3: it just never felt like they could get anything going.
- 21:28Speaker 1: They put pressure on you. They just put pressure on
- 21:31Speaker 1: you at all times. Like you said, with the bullpen roster,
- 21:34Speaker 1: three innings from Aaron Ashby, one inning from Uribe. Uribe? Uribe?
- 21:41Speaker 1: That's a tongue twister. Fuck me. And one from Trevor McGill,
- 21:44Speaker 1: who's been... I don't know if you remember this. Early
- 21:48Speaker 1: in this year, Trevor McGill gave up a few saves,
- 21:51Speaker 1: blew a few saves, and Brewers fans were booing him
- 21:55Speaker 1: early April.
- 21:56Speaker 2: He got moved out of the closer role. I remember
- 21:59Speaker 2: meeting with him during a game.
- 22:00Speaker 3: He got moved out, and he was saying, like Murph
- 22:03Speaker 3: wanting to get it back on track. And then I
- 22:06Speaker 3: don't think he's blown one. You know, I think he's
- 22:10Speaker 3: got 30 something saves. Like he, he was, he was,
- 22:13Speaker 3: you know, I had him as a player and, you know,
- 22:17Speaker 3: he was still developing and going through some things in
- 22:20Speaker 3: his personal life and absolutely turned everything around. He had
- 22:24Speaker 3: Milwaukee picking him up and he was dominant, man.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Absolutely nasty.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:29Speaker 3: I mean, but like, Pat Murphy came out. Churio had
- 22:31Speaker 3: six RBIs. Six RBIs in the series.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Pat Murphy had six.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Or, yeah.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Churio had six.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Jackson.
- 22:39Speaker 1: I mean.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:40Speaker 1: He was. He's a beast, man. And his playoff pedigree
- 22:43Speaker 1: is starting to take nice, nice shape.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:48Speaker 1: I mean, I'm excited for. That's going to be a fun,
- 22:52Speaker 1: fun preview show. Fun show. Fun to cover. The Dodgers
- 22:58Speaker 1: and the Brewers. Because those are the two. Heavyweights of
- 23:00Speaker 1: the National League going at it. Where do we go
- 23:05Speaker 1: with the Padres now? I feel like this is just
- 23:07Speaker 1: another huge disappointment for them. That team looked like they
- 23:10Speaker 1: had their full mojo back, have the bullpen to go
- 23:14Speaker 1: the distance and just falling short. You know, those guys,
- 23:17Speaker 1: I know Machado, how much he loves baseball, wants to win, right?
- 23:20Speaker 1: And that vibe in San Diego just seems so high.
- 23:24Speaker 1: And it's got to be just another gut-wrenching. And, you know,
- 23:28Speaker 1: it's a crash landing. whenever you lose. Yeah.
- 23:31Speaker 2: And it never feels good.
- 23:33Speaker 3: And, and Tatis is one of the, another one of
- 23:35Speaker 3: those that, you know, being on the West coast, he
- 23:37Speaker 3: still gets a lot of love, but he's one of
- 23:39Speaker 3: the best players in baseball when he's right. And the
- 23:41Speaker 3: start of their season, you know, didn't go to plan,
- 23:45Speaker 3: but they were, they were the best team in baseball,
- 23:47Speaker 3: I believe in the second half.
- 23:48Speaker 2: So you got to go on the off season. That's
- 23:50Speaker 2: got to sting.
- 23:51Speaker 3: I felt like, you know, for us in 2015, you know,
- 23:56Speaker 3: and getting hot at the back end or the second
- 23:58Speaker 3: half of our season, and then going all the way
- 24:00Speaker 3: and get swept by the Mets and the championship series
- 24:03Speaker 3: created this kind of fire in the off season of like, okay,
- 24:08Speaker 3: the belief is we're good enough.
- 24:09Speaker 2: We know we're good.
- 24:11Speaker 3: And that was our first time going deep in a
- 24:13Speaker 3: really long time for the Cubs. The Padres have been
- 24:16Speaker 3: to the post season pretty consistently lately and, and, you know,
- 24:19Speaker 3: getting knocked out by the Dodgers or whoever. So, but
- 24:23Speaker 3: you got to take a little bit of that disappointment.
- 24:24Speaker 3: You saw the, the look on Manny Machado's face after
- 24:28Speaker 3: that home run, it was just like, you gotta, you
- 24:31Speaker 3: gotta be shitting me, you know, I can't believe that happened.
- 24:33Speaker 3: And I think when we got beat by the Mets,
- 24:36Speaker 3: you go into that off season with a belief of like,
- 24:40Speaker 3: we are, we were good enough. We, the Mets just shoved,
- 24:44Speaker 3: but we're good enough to compete with the best of
- 24:47Speaker 3: the best. And the front office goes out and makes
- 24:50Speaker 3: the right moves, bringing in Jay Hayes, you start lacking,
- 24:54Speaker 3: you start bringing in the pieces that you feel like
- 24:58Speaker 3: you can have that you need. And, you know, we
- 25:01Speaker 3: win the world series, but that off season, a little
- 25:04Speaker 3: bit of that off season disappointment and that fuel of like,
- 25:07Speaker 3: we know we're good and I'm going to work because
- 25:10Speaker 3: we're playing deep into October again, the following year, I
- 25:14Speaker 3: think is, is healthy to be honest.
- 25:16Speaker 1: No, I agree, but it's, it's been five years of this.
- 25:20Speaker 1: It's very similar to the Yankees. It's like, oh, we
- 25:23Speaker 1: know we're good. We're going to come back and roll
- 25:25Speaker 1: out 90-plus wins again next year. But are we good enough?
- 25:32Speaker 1: What is missing on these teams? Because, again, this team, too,
- 25:36Speaker 1: very similar to the Yankees. You look at them on paper.
- 25:39Speaker 1: You look at them with your eyes. You're like, damn,
- 25:42Speaker 1: this team's legit. How is anyone going to beat this team?
- 25:46Speaker 1: Especially the way the Padres were playing going into October.
- 25:50Speaker 1: They ran into a dominant, dominant Brewers pitching staff. And
- 25:54Speaker 1: credit to the Padres, man. They fought. There was no
- 25:58Speaker 1: laying down. Jackson Merrill, I know he had that amazing
- 26:02Speaker 1: rookie year, kind of a down year last year, and
- 26:03Speaker 1: then had a really good second half this year. So
- 26:06Speaker 1: hopefully he continues to become a star in our game
- 26:10Speaker 1: because he's a lot of fun to watch. So, yeah,
- 26:12Speaker 1: there is a lot of optimism, but it's like.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Ethan Salas, the young catcher, like, love this kid.
- 26:17Speaker 3: To be in that environment... at 20, like that, that's just,
- 26:23Speaker 3: that's a resume, you know, something to put on your resume.
- 26:26Speaker 3: That's going to carry him and the expectations around there. That's,
- 26:29Speaker 3: that's really going to help them. So they got to
- 26:31Speaker 3: go out and get some starters. Right.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Like they, you know, it's crazy.
- 26:36Speaker 1: It's almost like these teams are the Dodgers before they,
- 26:41Speaker 1: the Dodgers won.
- 26:43Speaker 3: Right.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Every year, you know, you go back 15 years, the
- 26:47Speaker 1: Dodgers won the division, what, for the last 15 years?
- 26:50Speaker 1: Except one year. They make the playoffs. They get deep
- 26:53Speaker 1: in the playoffs. They lose the playoffs. It was the
- 26:56Speaker 1: same story. It was the same saga for the Dodgers
- 26:59Speaker 1: for years. And then they won that championship in 2020,
- 27:02Speaker 1: which was still like, ah, because they hadn't won a
- 27:06Speaker 1: real championship. That's what everyone was kind of saying, the narrative.
- 27:11Speaker 1: And then now they're, on the verge of a three
- 27:13Speaker 1: P so it's just, it, I guess the moral is
- 27:18Speaker 1: it takes a, like, like until you get over that hump,
- 27:21Speaker 1: you can't get over that hump. And how do you
- 27:24Speaker 1: get over that hump is by getting over the hump, right?
- 27:26Speaker 1: That probably sounds so dumb.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Gotta go do it. It's gotta go prove it. No,
- 27:30Speaker 2: you gotta go. You gotta go prove it.
- 27:32Speaker 3: The other thing is what, just in the back of
- 27:34Speaker 3: my mind here, like all these teams that feel like
- 27:36Speaker 3: they've got some momentum going into next year and some,
- 27:39Speaker 3: some real pieces, like, We've got a labor issue that
- 27:43Speaker 3: could take everybody's momentum away, right?
- 27:48Speaker 2: We won't get into that.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Yes and no.
- 27:50Speaker 2: We can't.
- 27:51Speaker 1: What momentum is that taking away? As soon as that
- 27:55Speaker 1: labor issue is done, the boys are back. You know
- 27:59Speaker 1: what I mean? Just because the season may not start.
- 28:01Speaker 2: I feel like more teams are in play with a
- 28:03Speaker 2: shortened season.
- 28:04Speaker 3: If it's a long lockout, if there's a lockout, which
- 28:08Speaker 3: I think a lot of people think there's going to
- 28:10Speaker 3: be if it's long.
- 28:12Speaker 2: That shortened season, everybody's in play.
- 28:14Speaker 3: It's like Pittsburgh may have a good half, you know,
- 28:17Speaker 3: like you start to, you start to feel like there's
- 28:21Speaker 3: more teams in play when you.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Don't have to play one 62. In my opinion, that's
- 28:24Speaker 2: all I'm saying.
- 28:25Speaker 1: A hundred percent. A hundred percent.
- 28:26Speaker 2: All right.
- 28:27Speaker 1: I was saying, cause once you get back and you're playing,
- 28:29Speaker 1: it's like, all right, here we go. Yeah. I remember
- 28:32Speaker 1: in 2020, I was literally, it's funny. It's so funny
- 28:35Speaker 1: how the big, this works 2020. It was like, Oh,
- 28:38Speaker 1: I'm going to just try some stuff. I, I, messed
- 28:40Speaker 1: with a two strike at bat. Like I literally made
- 28:42Speaker 1: a bat like before these torpedoes were made. Marucci was basically,
- 28:46Speaker 1: we were doing that. We were moving the barrel down
- 28:50Speaker 1: and I had literally a two strike at bat. It
- 28:53Speaker 1: was like a 33 inch, 33 and a half inch bat,
- 28:57Speaker 1: but the barrel was closer to my hands because I
- 29:00Speaker 1: choke up. So instead of choking up, I would just
- 29:03Speaker 1: use that bat. I never used in the game because
- 29:05Speaker 1: I was too scared to switch in game. But I
- 29:09Speaker 1: was messing with stuff in 2020 because it was such
- 29:12Speaker 1: a fugazi season. And then, of course, you don't have
- 29:16Speaker 1: a good year and then your front office is like, oh,
- 29:18Speaker 1: you got a down year. What was wrong with them?
- 29:20Speaker 1: I'm like, what the fuck do you mean what was
- 29:21Speaker 1: wrong with me? We played with zero people in the stands.
- 29:24Speaker 1: I had to take a goddamn mouth swab test every
- 29:26Speaker 1: time I walked into the.
- 29:30Speaker 3: I'm wearing a mask around my teammates at the dugout.
- 29:33Speaker 2: What are we doing?
- 29:36Speaker 1: You know, I was the number one player to get fined.
- 29:39Speaker 1: I love you, bro. I was the number one player
- 29:41Speaker 1: to get fined for not wearing a mask in COVID.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Oh, I know.
- 29:47Speaker 2: I was your manager. Oh, I know. I know. That
- 29:49Speaker 2: was a weird season.
- 29:50Speaker 3: But as my best job managing, this is the only
- 29:53Speaker 3: time we made the postseason when I.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Managed things to you guys.
- 29:56Speaker 3: So I'm trying to figure out how to manage in
- 29:59Speaker 3: the middle of like talking to Theo.
- 30:01Speaker 2: He's calling me.
- 30:01Speaker 3: My phone rings at like 8 a.m. And I'm like, oh,
- 30:04Speaker 3: this is not good news. We got a false positive
- 30:07Speaker 3: or we've got a what was the.
- 30:10Speaker 1: No, we didn't have anyone. We didn't have anyone test
- 30:12Speaker 1: positive on our team.
- 30:13Speaker 3: No, no.
- 30:14Speaker 2: And I was super. That was probably what I was
- 30:16Speaker 2: most proud of that season.
- 30:17Speaker 3: And we had like Kimbrough who had like a little
- 30:20Speaker 3: one that had a ton of issues health wise and
- 30:24Speaker 3: I just remember that we had a couple of those
- 30:27Speaker 3: false positive or inconclusive ones that somebody would have to
- 30:31Speaker 3: go in and test, but I would wake up at
- 30:33Speaker 3: 8 a.m. If Theo's phone, if my phone popped up
- 30:37Speaker 3: with his name on it, I was like, oh, we've
- 30:39Speaker 3: got issues.
- 30:40Speaker 2: So that was a mess. I'd meet with doctors every
- 30:42Speaker 2: day rather than players. It was nuts.
- 30:44Speaker 3: I was meeting with Doc Adams literally like every other day.
- 30:47Speaker 3: I'm like, this is not what I signed up for.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, supposedly, we have a fucking plague in Russia.
- 30:54Speaker 1: See how that pans out.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Guys, we were on the number one team in the world,
- 30:58Speaker 3: so it only makes sense that we partner with the
- 31:01Speaker 3: number one brand for better sex.

- 31:52Speaker 1: Anyways, let's get back on topic, Russ. Dodgers, the Dodgers,
- 31:57Speaker 1: the mighty fucking Dodgers beat the Braves 3-1 to advance
- 32:01Speaker 1: to NLCS. They just keep doing it, man. This is
- 32:05Speaker 1: the team to beat. This is the World Series favorite.
- 32:08Speaker 1: This is the team that the Brewers are going to
- 32:11Speaker 1: have a hard time beating them, man. They are. They're just.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Their stars are stars, man. They're hitting their stride right now.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Otani hasn't done a thing yet. You know he's going
- 32:23Speaker 1: to get hot. Their pitching is deep. Their bullpen now,
- 32:28Speaker 1: Tanner Scott and Edwin Diaz, if those dudes get hot,
- 32:31Speaker 1: which they have, it's on the back of their baseball
- 32:34Speaker 1: cards that they certainly have been hot throughout their careers.
- 32:38Speaker 1: And it's just that whole lineup, one through nine. With
- 32:41Speaker 1: the GOAT in there.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Yeah. With Babe Ruth playing sporadically.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Part-time player.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Part-time player, Babe Ruth. And Kike Hernandez. No, I like.
- 32:56Speaker 3: First of all, like takeaways from that series, like Michael
- 33:00Speaker 3: Harris is he's he's arrived, right? Like I know, again,
- 33:05Speaker 3: another guy that has a great first season and had
- 33:10Speaker 3: a couple of down years, but had a phenomenal year
- 33:13Speaker 3: and then was the dude in the postseason. Tyler Malley
- 33:17Speaker 3: dealt yesterday. That splitty was filthy. Absolutely electric.
- 33:22Speaker 2: The one that just, the dropped pop-up by Mauricio Dubon.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it hurts. That, that.
- 33:28Speaker 3: And such a good player, too. Such a good player.
- 33:31Speaker 3: He was that unsung hero that I talked about. But
- 33:34Speaker 3: you go, we talk about clean baseball. And the playoffs,
- 33:37Speaker 3: I mean, the theme this year, it hadn't been very
- 33:39Speaker 3: clean for a lot of these teams. That even the
- 33:42Speaker 3: ones that play great defense, like the moment is sped
- 33:45Speaker 3: up on some guys.
- 33:46Speaker 2: And the atmosphere is.
- 33:49Speaker 3: Being on the road, some guys that don't make mistakes did,
- 33:51Speaker 3: and he was one of them, and you can't give
- 33:53Speaker 3: the Dodgers extra opportunities. You know, like when you start
- 33:56Speaker 3: talking about the Dodgers and how clean you have to
- 33:59Speaker 3: play and the things you've got to do to beat them,
- 34:01Speaker 3: and one, their pitching is so good, and that lineup
- 34:05Speaker 3: is so deep. You know, the top of that lineup,
- 34:08Speaker 3: for me, and even in this game, didn't do much.
- 34:12Speaker 3: It was the bottom of that lineup, and everybody's like, well,
- 34:14Speaker 3: the bottom lineup did well. Well, the bottom of that
- 34:16Speaker 3: lineup has Max Muncy in it. You know, Pajas is
- 34:21Speaker 3: hitting in the nine hole.
- 34:22Speaker 1: You know, that bottom line up is a one through four.
- 34:25Speaker 1: And every non-playoff team, that's a one through four lineup. Exactly.
- 34:30Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 34:31Speaker 3: Andy Pajas had a, you know, he got kind of
- 34:34Speaker 3: benched last postseason for them. Well, he comes up with
- 34:37Speaker 3: the bases loaded double.
- 34:38Speaker 1: That was a big moment for him.
- 34:39Speaker 3: Like huge moment for him. when you got that kind
- 34:43Speaker 3: of a bat that he, you know, he had such
- 34:44Speaker 3: a good year this year and you got that kind
- 34:47Speaker 3: of a bat in the bot at the bottom of
- 34:49Speaker 3: the order.
- 34:49Speaker 2: It's nuts. Like Kike Tucker, pa Hayes at the is seven, eight, nine.
- 34:54Speaker 3: Like we got Babe Ruth, you know, Kyle Tucker's making
- 34:59Speaker 3: $ 60 million and Max Muncy's in the freaking six.
- 35:02Speaker 2: So, so like, I mean, this thing's deep.
- 35:04Speaker 3: Max Muncy is an absolute, like it, every time people
- 35:08Speaker 3: doubt him, it just, it's the same at bat.
- 35:10Speaker 2: It's quality.
- 35:11Speaker 3: There's thump in there. He takes his walks. He on
- 35:13Speaker 3: base is high. Like he, he, he just, I think
- 35:17Speaker 3: he just, it's that middle. I always think it's like
- 35:19Speaker 3: that six, six, seven. It's like that six, seven guy that,
- 35:25Speaker 3: that really leaked LinkedIn's a lineup. And they've got a
- 35:27Speaker 3: guy making 60 million hidden in the eight hole.
- 35:30Speaker 2: Like what the heck?
- 35:32Speaker 1: And they have, they have experienced Dave Roberts has experienced the,
- 35:36Speaker 1: the whole, Their whole lineup. I don't know how I'm
- 35:43Speaker 1: saying this, but how am I rooting for the Dodgers
- 35:47Speaker 1: to three-peat? They ripped my fucking heart out in 2024.
- 35:54Speaker 1: I could have ended my career as a World Series
- 35:57Speaker 1: champion like you instead of a World Series fucking loser.
- 36:01Speaker 1: But it was like, you know what? This is why.
- 36:04Speaker 1: My whole life, I'm a Dolphins fan, right? I had
- 36:08Speaker 1: to watch Tom Brady come in and just beat our
- 36:12Speaker 1: ass every year, year in and year out. Tom Brady this,
- 36:16Speaker 1: Tom Brady that. And as a Dolphins fan, you hate
- 36:18Speaker 1: the Patriots. So I hated Tom Brady when I was younger.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Hated him. Like, if I saw him on the street,
- 36:24Speaker 1: I'd fucking try to trip him. And then as I
- 36:30Speaker 1: got older, I come to respect him and admire him
- 36:34Speaker 1: and just love him because he just did it year
- 36:37Speaker 1: in and year out. And it's the great, it's the
- 36:39Speaker 1: greatness that I appreciate because it's so I may be
- 36:43Speaker 1: from firsthand experience. It's so hard to be great. You
- 36:48Speaker 1: can have a good first half. You can put together
- 36:50Speaker 1: a good season. Can you do it over 10 years?
- 36:53Speaker 1: Can you do it over 15 years? Can you do
- 36:55Speaker 1: it over five, six, seven years? Because guys can do
- 36:58Speaker 1: it for, couple months they can show you the the
- 37:01Speaker 1: spark so that's that's kind of i feel like what's
- 37:04Speaker 1: happening with me with the dodgers is like they're just
- 37:06Speaker 1: keep doing it man like these guys you see that
- 37:09Speaker 1: you see that dugout it's the guys are playing like
- 37:12Speaker 1: they have never won a world series when you look
- 37:14Speaker 1: in that dugout which is impressive.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Well what i think about to your point is.
- 37:22Speaker 3: I think You know, we talk about the White Sox
- 37:25Speaker 3: and no expectations and being in the position they're at.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Everybody's rooting for them.
- 37:30Speaker 3: And just like, what a great underdog story and how
- 37:32Speaker 3: hard it is for them to get to the postseason. Bro,
- 37:36Speaker 3: when you are the Dodgers and you're a two-time defending
- 37:39Speaker 3: champion and you walk into spring training, like we talked
- 37:42Speaker 3: about earlier, and the expectation is World Series or bust,
- 37:46Speaker 3: that's way harder. That's way harder to produce and show up.
- 37:50Speaker 3: And like 100 wins, regular season is just a warmup
- 37:54Speaker 3: for them. It's like, Oh, that's cute. We're about to
- 37:56Speaker 3: really get locked in and get everybody healthy and start
- 37:58Speaker 3: playing the post season. So I think that's the, one
- 38:01Speaker 3: of the hardest things to do in baseball is like
- 38:05Speaker 3: produce with expectations. You know, we dealt with that in 16,
- 38:08Speaker 3: like going in, we were the favorites and with the
- 38:11Speaker 3: run we went on and, and all the young guys
- 38:13Speaker 3: that were coming back. And, you know, that's why Joe
- 38:16Speaker 3: was talking about embracing the target and expectations are a
- 38:19Speaker 3: good thing.
- 38:19Speaker 2: That means you're, you're good. And, but to go out
- 38:22Speaker 2: and do that is extremely hard.
- 38:24Speaker 3: I just, I, I, they, you know, that's the hardest
- 38:28Speaker 3: thing to do in my opinion, uh, in sports is when,
- 38:31Speaker 3: when you're expected to win. Yeah.
- 38:33Speaker 1: And they're doing it. You know what I mean? Like they, they,
- 38:35Speaker 1: they're Joe used to say all the time, see things
- 38:38Speaker 1: for the first time. There's nothing better than when you
- 38:40Speaker 1: see something for the first time, you're just in awe, right?
- 38:43Speaker 1: Oh my God, this is amazing. It looks like the
- 38:45Speaker 1: Dodgers are doing that right now.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:47Speaker 1: When they're winning.
- 38:48Speaker 3: Right. And my, my, Dave Roberts was a teammate and my,
- 38:54Speaker 3: my son's named after his son.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Freddie Freeman was a teammate. I play for the Dodgers and.
- 39:01Speaker 3: I'm still rooting against him because it's like, I want
- 39:04Speaker 3: somebody else to see, I want somebody else to take
- 39:07Speaker 3: the crown. You know, I want one of these other
- 39:08Speaker 3: teams to get some, some of that love. And Mookie
- 39:10Speaker 3: Betts was a teammate. Like it's, it's, it's, it's hard.
- 39:16Speaker 1: It's yeah.
- 39:17Speaker 2: I know, I know you're respecting him, but, I just think.
- 39:19Speaker 1: It's so hard to win, bro. It's so hard to
- 39:21Speaker 1: win in the fact that we haven't seen a back-to-back
- 39:25Speaker 1: champion in over 20 years. What was it, since the
- 39:29Speaker 1: Yankees did it? it in whenever they did it. Yeah.
- 39:34Speaker 1: I have a lot of beliefs because I feel like
- 39:36Speaker 1: social media, when teams win now, players get so famous
- 39:40Speaker 1: and they get pulled in 20 different directions that they
- 39:42Speaker 1: can't fully lock back in. And that World Series hangover
- 39:45Speaker 1: is real, whether you want to admit it or not.
- 39:48Speaker 1: The fact that the Dodgers back in the nocs they're
- 39:51Speaker 1: gonna have a tough tough spot we'll talk about on
- 39:53Speaker 1: our preview show probably here tomorrow in the next couple
- 39:56Speaker 1: days but i'm like damn how am i rooting for
- 39:59Speaker 1: this team like yeah i actually hate that i'm rooting
- 40:02Speaker 1: for them now.
- 40:03Speaker 3: I thought their weakness was the bullpen the bullpens look
- 40:06Speaker 3: clean tanner scott edwin diaz in the back end it
- 40:09Speaker 3: both look really good so If they start to dial
- 40:13Speaker 3: it in and the top of that lineup gets going,
- 40:16Speaker 3: I don't know if anybody can stop them, but we
- 40:18Speaker 3: will have a great series with them and the Brewers.
- 40:21Speaker 3: It'll be rocking, and the Brewers are going to need
- 40:23Speaker 3: that home field advantage they'll get in the series.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Tarek Skugel versus Jacob Mizorowski, game one. How's that for
- 40:31Speaker 1: some firepower? Let's get to the Guardians beating the White
- 40:37Speaker 1: Sox 9-3. Rossi, yesterday, I'm here in Chicago. I'm doing
- 40:41Speaker 1: a camp on behalf of Bank of America. We got
- 40:44Speaker 1: together a bunch of kids playing sports. I was a
- 40:47Speaker 1: golf instructor, which I had no business being a golf
- 40:49Speaker 1: instructor because my golf game stinks. But every question I
- 40:54Speaker 1: got asked when I was doing the media is the
- 40:56Speaker 1: White Sox, the White Sox, the White Sox. You're going
- 40:59Speaker 1: to the game. Are you going to the game? Yes,
- 41:01Speaker 1: I was at the game. The game was absolutely electric
- 41:05Speaker 1: early on. That place, you know, at right field, I
- 41:09Speaker 1: think it's called now. That place is built vertical. So
- 41:13Speaker 1: the stadium, everyone's on top of you. And to see
- 41:17Speaker 1: it packed out like that, I've only seen it packed
- 41:19Speaker 1: out like that versus when we were there at the
- 41:22Speaker 1: Cubs or when we were there at the Yankees. I've
- 41:24Speaker 1: never seen that many White Sox fans in that stadium
- 41:27Speaker 1: ever in my life. And they showed out and it
- 41:29Speaker 1: was loud there. Those fans are excited for October baseball
- 41:34Speaker 1: there to see potentially their team clinch. The Guardians had
- 41:37Speaker 1: different plans, Rossi, but The question I was getting asked
- 41:42Speaker 1: most about was this team is so similar to that
- 41:45Speaker 1: 15 and 16 team, that 16 team. And I'm like,
- 41:49Speaker 1: all right, pump the brakes here.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Pump the brakes.
- 41:53Speaker 1: First off.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Pump the brakes.
- 41:55Speaker 3: Hey, we're trying to be positive, White Sox, and we're
- 41:58Speaker 3: on the bandwagon. But pump the brakes.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Pump the brakes. Where's your Jake Arrieta? Where's your John Lester?
- 42:05Speaker 1: Yeah, John Lackey. Like, stop. Where's your MVPs, right?
- 42:09Speaker 3: Like. Yeah.
- 42:10Speaker 1: So, but I said, look, this team has come together
- 42:15Speaker 1: and that our team in 16 came together as well.
- 42:19Speaker 1: We were just the most talent. We were the most
- 42:21Speaker 1: talented team and the best team. And that rarely happens.
- 42:24Speaker 1: And I think that's why we were so easy to
- 42:25Speaker 1: root for and healthy. We stayed healthy too.
- 42:28Speaker 2: That, that helped us.
- 42:29Speaker 1: So, but man, the, the, the team, Mike Vassell, bro,
- 42:34Speaker 1: like what an unsung hero, bro. He's just on Tommy John.
- 42:37Speaker 1: I know we've talked about him before, but, Like, him,
- 42:41Speaker 1: before the game, he was pumping up the fans. Like,
- 42:43Speaker 1: he was raising the roof. The place was so loud.
- 42:48Speaker 3: How loud was it when Kyle Teal got that first RBI?
- 42:51Speaker 3: They took the lead.
- 42:52Speaker 1: I have some videos I'll send, and we'll throw out there. But,
- 42:56Speaker 1: I mean, Emily, my wife, who's been to a ton
- 42:59Speaker 1: of playoff games, she was like, holy shit, I don't
- 43:01Speaker 1: think I've ever seen a stadium this loud.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Wow.
- 43:04Speaker 1: And when you play, you think, like, you know what
- 43:07Speaker 1: loud is, but you're in it. So I always ask her,
- 43:10Speaker 1: I'm like, how does this compare to others? She's like,
- 43:12Speaker 1: this is fucking crazy. That's how loud the White Sox
- 43:15Speaker 1: fans were. So shout out to them.
- 43:17Speaker 3: Well, that big, you know, let's walk through the game
- 43:20Speaker 3: real quick. And like, you know, Sean Newcomb started off
- 43:24Speaker 3: two clean innings. And then, you know, the next, the
- 43:27Speaker 3: bullpen stuff, somebody's going to have bad days. And it just,
- 43:30Speaker 3: every once in a while when you go with a
- 43:31Speaker 3: bullpen game, you know, these guys have been so good.
- 43:36Speaker 3: dominant and pitched so well and Will Venables mixed and
- 43:39Speaker 3: matched really well just wasn't there tonight from a pitching
- 43:42Speaker 3: standpoint five of the six guys after Newcomb gave up
- 43:46Speaker 3: runs so you know that didn't work and credit the
- 43:49Speaker 3: Guardian hitters Joe Adele huge bases loaded triple was absolutely
- 43:53Speaker 3: electric it looked like that place they need I thought
- 43:56Speaker 3: the Guardians needed a big knock to kind of break
- 44:00Speaker 3: that seal and give them some of that momentum not
- 44:03Speaker 3: just like one here and one there like that big
- 44:05Speaker 3: triple from Adele down the right field line was, was huge.
- 44:09Speaker 3: And then Jose Ramirez showed up like the great defensive play.
- 44:14Speaker 3: They traded for Joe Adele. He was a big, big piece.
- 44:19Speaker 3: And then Jose Ramirez game for me, two great plays
- 44:22Speaker 3: and the triple there to kind of seal it down
- 44:24Speaker 3: the line. Gritchick dies for the ball just out of
- 44:28Speaker 3: his reach. Three runs scored, I think two runs score.
- 44:31Speaker 3: He gets a triple like, Then you felt like he
- 44:34Speaker 3: was a little bit out of hand, and he kind
- 44:35Speaker 3: of punted to the next game. But I thought the
- 44:38Speaker 3: White Sox continued to fight. They got that lead from
- 44:41Speaker 3: the Adele triple, and then they had second, third, one out.
- 44:45Speaker 3: Teal hits an absolute missile to second. I think it
- 44:48Speaker 3: was who was on second.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Double play, Vargas.
- 44:51Speaker 2: Third baseman was on second. Vargas. Vargas, thank you. Got
- 44:54Speaker 2: doubled off. Yeah, and then.
- 44:57Speaker 3: Jose Ramirez bases loaded two outs and an absolute rocket
- 45:00Speaker 3: hit to Ramirez's left, and he dives, almost catches it,
- 45:03Speaker 3: drops it, and then throws out Vargas, who had a
- 45:06Speaker 3: missile bases loaded. So the White Sox fought. They didn't
- 45:10Speaker 3: not fight, and it felt like it just wasn't going
- 45:12Speaker 3: their way yesterday.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Yeah, they had every opportunity. They had three major opportunities.
- 45:18Speaker 1: There was one spot in the game, I believe, when
- 45:21Speaker 1: the Guardians were up 5-3. Leadoff, double. And I said
- 45:27Speaker 1: they should bunt. And I want to know your opinion
- 45:29Speaker 1: on this. Just get a little bit closer.
- 45:31Speaker 2: I remember that.
- 45:32Speaker 1: To score a run. Move the guy over and then
- 45:35Speaker 1: hopefully you get him in. Right? Just to put pressure
- 45:38Speaker 1: on him. And they didn't end up scoring that run,
- 45:39Speaker 1: that leadoff double. Which is just another lost opportunity, right?
- 45:45Speaker 1: I feel like when you can get one point in
- 45:48Speaker 1: the playoffs, even if you're down two, you get one,
- 45:53Speaker 1: momentum's back on your side. The other team's feeling the heat.
- 45:55Speaker 3: So, But you also like the, again, we know how
- 46:01Speaker 3: the socks are made up. They walk, but they also
- 46:04Speaker 3: strike out a lot.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 46:06Speaker 1: And when you get 19 strikeouts, like.
- 46:09Speaker 2: 19 punches, that's what I was getting to like team identity.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Right.
- 46:13Speaker 3: But I know part of that is like button a
- 46:15Speaker 3: guy over, you know, to maybe just put one in
- 46:17Speaker 3: play to get that run in because you know, all
- 46:20Speaker 3: the strikeouts, I mean, I guess you can look at
- 46:22Speaker 3: that other way to bomb over and you strike out
- 46:24Speaker 3: so much, maybe you don't get them in, but, Um,
- 46:26Speaker 3: I'm with you on that. They had 19 punches. You gotta,
- 46:29Speaker 3: you gotta give a lot of love to the, the Cleveland, uh,
- 46:32Speaker 3: pitching staff.
- 46:32Speaker 2: They did. They did great.
- 46:34Speaker 3: And, uh, kept them at bay and we get more, uh,
- 46:37Speaker 3: post-season baseball. We get more to talk about. We got, uh,
- 46:39Speaker 3: just one primetime game tonight.
- 46:41Speaker 1: Yeah. I, you know what I love to, um, first
- 46:45Speaker 1: off both managers love Will Venable. I know I keep
- 46:50Speaker 1: glazing over him, but got to see his wife, Catherine
- 46:52Speaker 1: at the game, Emily and Catherine are friends. She came
- 46:55Speaker 1: up to the suite and talked to us for a
- 46:56Speaker 1: few innings and just so happy for their family. And
- 47:02Speaker 1: Stephen Vogt, you know what I mean? Did you see
- 47:04Speaker 1: his quote after the game? No, what did he say?
- 47:07Speaker 1: What's better, making 50,000 people stand up and cheer for
- 47:11Speaker 1: you or shutting 50,000 people up when you're on the road? Like,
- 47:16Speaker 1: what's a better feeling? That's nice. Good line. Because I
- 47:20Speaker 1: don't know if that feeling, like, I don't think people
- 47:24Speaker 1: sat down there for the first three to five innings
- 47:28Speaker 1: at the White Sox part. I was like, whoa. Maybe
- 47:34Speaker 1: I'm just having been removed from the game for too
- 47:37Speaker 1: long now. It's been only two years, but it was electric.
- 47:40Speaker 1: If they can force a game five, Rossi, that's not good.
- 47:46Speaker 1: White Sox have to take care of business. They have
- 47:48Speaker 1: to clinch at home. The general consensus from White Sox
- 47:51Speaker 1: fans is I need to be here to see this
- 47:52Speaker 1: team clinch. They haven't clinched a home playoff series since 1906. Okay?
- 47:58Speaker 1: You know, maybe the Guardians exhale that, but it's not
- 48:01Speaker 1: like the Guardians were this dominant team this year. You
- 48:04Speaker 1: know what I mean? They barely beat the White Sox
- 48:07Speaker 1: in the division. So this is a very evenly matched.
- 48:09Speaker 1: They know each other very well. This game four should
- 48:12Speaker 1: be absolutely electric. Will's going to have his whole arsenal
- 48:17Speaker 1: of pitchers online. I don't know how these guys are
- 48:20Speaker 1: going to keep throwing back-to-back, right? The off days saved them,
- 48:22Speaker 1: but it's going to be interesting to see how this
- 48:24Speaker 1: game shapes up today. I'm primetime, too. Under the lights now.
- 48:29Speaker 1: The White Sox are under the microscope. Under the lights.
- 48:32Speaker 1: Your time is to shine right now. Time is to shine.
- 48:36Speaker 2: The lights are going to be bright. The lights are
- 48:39Speaker 2: going to be bright.
- 48:40Speaker 1: Are they in real trouble here, Rossi, or what do
- 48:42Speaker 1: you got? Who wins this game for us?
- 48:44Speaker 3: Man, I think, like, We'll get my polymarket pick for
- 48:47Speaker 3: this one. Parker Messick on the bump for the Guardians.
- 48:52Speaker 3: The Guardians are 52% to the yes, probably because of
- 48:55Speaker 3: Parker Messick on the mound. $ 100 gets you back $ 186.
- 48:58Speaker 3: And the White Sox are 48% to the yes. $ 100
- 49:04Speaker 3: gets you $ 199. And I just don't see this thing
- 49:08Speaker 3: going back to Cleveland. I'm going to go with the
- 49:11Speaker 3: White Sox to win at home. Odds against them. And
- 49:16Speaker 3: we're all about making that money.
- 49:19Speaker 1: Yeah. I, look, as much as I'm on this White
- 49:22Speaker 1: Sox bandwagon right now, I wouldn't even say the bandwagon.
- 49:24Speaker 1: I just like the way they're playing. I think this
- 49:28Speaker 1: game early will be the– if they can come out
- 49:31Speaker 1: and score early, they win. If this game goes to
- 49:37Speaker 1: the fourth inning and there's no runs– the guardians went.
- 49:41Speaker 1: I just think the guardians have been there. They've done this.
- 49:44Speaker 1: They're tested. Um, and the pressure is immediately going to
- 49:49Speaker 1: go to the white socks to win and finish this
- 49:51Speaker 1: thing at home. It's not easy to win at home.
- 49:53Speaker 3: Right.
- 49:53Speaker 1: So, uh, I would like to see you get game
- 49:56Speaker 1: five for baseball. So I'm going to go with the
- 49:59Speaker 1: guardians in this one.
- 50:01Speaker 3: Well, if they, if they lose, I got to go
- 50:02Speaker 3: to Cleveland and face the AL strikeout leader at Gavin Williams. So, um,
- 50:08Speaker 3: they need to grab this thing in Chicago, uh, They
- 50:11Speaker 3: need to grab this primetime game.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Rossi, let's get to our Tim Buss ball bag questions
- 50:16Speaker 1: of the day. It's where me and my partner answer
- 50:20Speaker 1: fan questions. Remember, please send the questions to rossandriza at
- 50:24Speaker 1: gmail.com or comment on our YouTube or social media channels.
- 50:28Speaker 1: We love answering these questions. I feel like these questions
- 50:31Speaker 1: every day keep getting better and better. Chris Tran, shout
- 50:34Speaker 1: out to you for finding the good ones and making
- 50:37Speaker 1: these interesting. First email is from Michelle.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Hi, Michelle.
- 50:41Speaker 1: My question is about the announcers for the wildcard games.
- 50:44Speaker 1: You were great, Rizzo. Thank you. Thank you, Michelle. I
- 50:48Speaker 1: loved having the color guys from both teams in the booth.
- 50:50Speaker 1: I thought it added a lot. What do you guys
- 50:52Speaker 1: think of this format?
- 50:55Speaker 3: Man, I finished the wildcard series and listened to them all.
- 50:58Speaker 3: I was at ESPN watching every game. And we had
- 51:01Speaker 3: baseball tonight afterwards going through it. And we talked about
- 51:04Speaker 3: it in the room. It was such a great listen
- 51:07Speaker 3: to have one former players from teams, yourself, You know,
- 51:12Speaker 3: the color guy, JD, in the booth for the Cubs.
- 51:17Speaker 2: You know, Lou Maloney, who's with the Red Sox all
- 51:19Speaker 2: the time.
- 51:19Speaker 3: All the guys that somehow either cover their team or
- 51:22Speaker 3: played for the team were in the dugout. And I
- 51:26Speaker 3: just thought it was a great listen. You heard stories
- 51:28Speaker 3: about the winning times at that organization. They knew the
- 51:34Speaker 3: organization and the players a little bit better probably than
- 51:38Speaker 3: a guy like me who comes in, does a game,
- 51:40Speaker 3: and then I'm out the next day, right?
- 51:42Speaker 2: And you do your background. I watch baseball, obviously, and
- 51:46Speaker 2: we're on the.
- 51:46Speaker 3: Pod, but the people with the teams consistently or, you know,
- 51:51Speaker 3: if I was doing a Cubs game, I follow those
- 51:53Speaker 3: a lot harder than I do, let's say, a Seattle game.
- 51:56Speaker 2: And so I just know a little bit more. Those
- 51:59Speaker 2: guys that are with.
- 52:00Speaker 3: The team all the time or falling a little bit
- 52:02Speaker 3: harder as a former player, I thought it was a
- 52:04Speaker 3: great listen, and I love the format from NBC.
- 52:07Speaker 1: I thought it was awesome. ABC, I feel like, has
- 52:09Speaker 1: just absolutely mailed this. Getting to work with them all
- 52:14Speaker 1: year with Jason Benetti and then whoever the color guys
- 52:16Speaker 1: were for each team was awesome, especially for me being
- 52:21Speaker 1: a rookie broadcaster. I got to go in every Sunday
- 52:26Speaker 1: and talk to the guys from their team and start
- 52:28Speaker 1: asking them questions. Hey, what about this guy?
- 52:29Speaker 2: What about this?
- 52:30Speaker 1: And they have all of the information. They have all
- 52:32Speaker 1: the inside scoop. So it was really cool. hearing John
- 52:36Speaker 1: Kruk say, Oh yeah, JT real Muto hit early a
- 52:39Speaker 1: few days ago. And he's really been working on that.
- 52:40Speaker 1: And he hits a triple in the wildcard game.
- 52:42Speaker 3: Right. So just right after he says it, right after
- 52:46Speaker 3: he says it down the right field line, right? Like
- 52:48Speaker 3: it was just like only, only somebody who's been around
- 52:51Speaker 3: the team would see that and know that. And right
- 52:54Speaker 3: on cue, JT goes, gets tripled down the right field
- 52:57Speaker 3: line after him saying he was really working on hitting
- 52:59Speaker 3: the other way.
- 53:00Speaker 2: I thought that was gold.
- 53:01Speaker 1: And, And too, I feel like as a team, like
- 53:04Speaker 1: as a fan, when you watch the playoffs, the general
- 53:08Speaker 1: consensus is I watch, you know, you fall in love
- 53:11Speaker 1: like with the broadcast, whether you like them or not.
- 53:14Speaker 1: It's like you build this relationship with the broadcasters. Like
- 53:19Speaker 1: you feel like you know them because they're on every
- 53:21Speaker 1: single day for the most part. So when you get
- 53:24Speaker 1: to the playoffs, you're hearing completely new people. So with
- 53:28Speaker 1: this NBC format, I loved it because at least fans
- 53:31Speaker 1: got a glimpse, you know, of their, their home guy still.
- 53:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:37Speaker 1: So I thought, yeah. Great question, Michelle. Thank you.
- 53:40Speaker 2: Great question, Michelle. I'm, I'd probably debate you on if
- 53:43Speaker 2: Rizzo was great. I mean, I thought he was good,
- 53:45Speaker 2: but great. I mean, great.
- 53:47Speaker 1: Hey, it's a work in progress. We're still working.
- 53:50Speaker 2: Post these that call. Oh, thanks for the question, Michelle. Uh,
- 53:54Speaker 2: next email is from Jupiter. All Jupiter. I guess how
- 53:59Speaker 2: you say that.
- 54:00Speaker 3: Um, Hey guys, How cool would it be to have
- 54:03Speaker 3: a Brewers and Rays in the fall classic? It would
- 54:06Speaker 3: be a throwback and a clinic on how old school
- 54:08Speaker 3: baseball is played, good hitting without having to hit home runs,
- 54:11Speaker 3: base running and bunting, sack flies, stolen bases, putting the
- 54:15Speaker 3: ball in play and putting pressure on the defense from
- 54:18Speaker 3: the two teams that did it best.
- 54:20Speaker 2: How great would that be?
- 54:21Speaker 1: It'd be fucking terrible. It would be amazing and it
- 54:29Speaker 1: would be terrible. This is why it would be amazing.
- 54:34Speaker 1: It would be amazing because, yes, I love the old school,
- 54:39Speaker 1: bunt a guy over, get a guy over, the fundamentals, right?
- 54:41Speaker 1: I love that stuff. I really do. I think it's
- 54:44Speaker 1: a lost art in our game. Just trying to... Everyone
- 54:47Speaker 1: hitting for slug now, slug, slug, slug. That's what they
- 54:50Speaker 1: pay for, so you cannot blame guys for that. But
- 54:55Speaker 1: if the Rays and the Brewers are in the World Series...
- 55:00Speaker 1: Every single owner is going to say, why can't we
- 55:04Speaker 1: be them? And they're not going to want to spend
- 55:07Speaker 1: any more money because every owner already is saying, well,
- 55:10Speaker 1: why can't we just be like the Rays? They make
- 55:13Speaker 1: the playoffs every year. They go deep every year. Why
- 55:15Speaker 1: can't we be like the Brewers? They have a $ 100
- 55:19Speaker 1: million payroll. We have a $ 300 million payroll. We have
- 55:22Speaker 1: a $ 250 million payroll. So that's why I would hate it.
- 55:25Speaker 1: But the product of baseball and seeing... two teams that
- 55:30Speaker 1: have never won a world series when it would put
- 55:32Speaker 1: a world, their first championship would be awesome.
- 55:35Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, the reason why it would be great
- 55:37Speaker 3: for me is that's my two picks and I would
- 55:40Speaker 3: love to be right.
- 55:41Speaker 2: First of all, I would love that.
- 55:44Speaker 3: Um, this whole, uh, this whole prediction thing is, is
- 55:48Speaker 3: new to us players. Cause we know you gotta, you
- 55:51Speaker 3: gotta play it out on the field. So it's hard.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Um, I think part of that is you're right.
- 55:57Speaker 3: I think you talk about saving baseball. It may not
- 56:02Speaker 3: say baseball, but it may save the players' union for
- 56:04Speaker 3: when it comes to... We have a real argument here
- 56:06Speaker 3: of it's not about a salary cap. It's about these
- 56:11Speaker 3: guys building the right team and playing the right brand
- 56:14Speaker 3: of baseball.
- 56:15Speaker 2: But I also....
- 56:18Speaker 3: I love the Homer, you know, I'm not, I love
- 56:20Speaker 3: watching somebody hit a three run Homer. Like if that
- 56:22Speaker 3: Volpe ball goes out yesterday and it's tied to two,
- 56:26Speaker 3: like that's an electric moment. I love electric moments. I
- 56:30Speaker 3: love a home run that changes the score more than
- 56:32Speaker 3: a base.
- 56:32Speaker 2: Hit up the middle.
- 56:33Speaker 3: Like that's just better watch. And it feels like the
- 56:36Speaker 3: guy steps up a little bit, but I'm with you.
- 56:38Speaker 3: I'm an old school guy. I came up in the
- 56:40Speaker 3: national league and most of my career was in the
- 56:42Speaker 3: national league. I love the button hit and run base running,
- 56:45Speaker 3: putting pressure. contact i fell in love with as a
- 56:48Speaker 3: as a manager when you have guys that put the
- 56:50Speaker 3: ball in play with an error where there's so many
- 56:52Speaker 3: strikeouts and i love that brand of baseball that both
- 56:54Speaker 3: those teams play so um i agree with you a
- 56:57Speaker 3: little bit but also um you know there's there's an
- 57:00Speaker 3: argument there.
- 57:01Speaker 2: Of why it could be a little bit boring.
- 57:04Speaker 3: In the small markets right like everybody loves the the
- 57:08Speaker 3: build up from the tv perspective and and the fan
- 57:10Speaker 3: perspective of these big markets and when you have your
- 57:13Speaker 3: your fan bases are just kind of worldwide rather than,
- 57:16Speaker 3: you know, I think the Rays are probably a little
- 57:19Speaker 3: less worldwide than the Yankees.
- 57:23Speaker 1: You said that and it just got me thinking because
- 57:26Speaker 1: I said the owners would be pit, like the owners
- 57:27Speaker 1: want to copycat. What made me think of that is
- 57:32Speaker 1: if I'm an owner, right? Now I'm speaking on behalf
- 57:35Speaker 1: of the owners. Look at me. I'm just grilling my organization.
- 57:40Speaker 1: I'm saying, look, what are we doing wrong? Like, because,
- 57:44Speaker 1: you know, everyone quantifies their success in numbers, right? Everything's
- 57:48Speaker 1: numbers now. They present in numbers and, oh, this should happen. ABC, right? But, like,
- 57:53Speaker 1: facts are facts. The Rays are a pitching factory. They
- 57:57Speaker 1: just keep producing good pitching and they have a good
- 58:00Speaker 1: product of baseball on the field. The Brewers, same thing.
- 58:03Speaker 1: Good style of baseball. It seemed like for years, if
- 58:06Speaker 1: you were a struggling hitter and you went to the Dodgers,
- 58:08Speaker 1: they revamped you somehow, right? Like, you would You were struggling.
- 58:13Speaker 1: You go to the Dodgers. Now you become an all-star.
- 58:15Speaker 1: So if I'm looking deep under the hood, if I'm
- 58:19Speaker 1: an owner, I'm like, I'm going right to my player
- 58:23Speaker 1: development system. I'm seeing why are we not developing these
- 58:26Speaker 1: guys the way other teams are. And I'm trying to
- 58:28Speaker 1: figure that piece of the puzzle out first. Great question
- 58:31Speaker 1: from Jupitero. This last one, Rossi's for you. Email from
- 58:37Speaker 1: Brad Barber. What did Rossi tell pitchers when he went
- 58:41Speaker 1: out for a mound visit as a catcher? As a catcher.
- 58:46Speaker 1: I want to hear what you have to say, and
- 58:48Speaker 1: then I want to hear the John Lester story of
- 58:51Speaker 1: when you would go out with him sometimes.
- 58:54Speaker 2: All right.
- 58:54Speaker 3: A lot of the times, I think one of the
- 58:58Speaker 3: roles as a catcher is knowing your pitchers and what
- 59:02Speaker 3: they need, right? Some guys may need a mechanical cue.
- 59:06Speaker 3: that you may pick up in a bullpen in spring
- 59:08Speaker 3: training and something that you found. Or some guys might
- 59:11Speaker 3: need you to calm things down. Hey, let's look at
- 59:13Speaker 3: what we're trying to do. Let's get a double play,
- 59:16Speaker 3: sinker down and away.
- 59:17Speaker 2: Let's get two.
- 59:18Speaker 3: And some guys, you may have to jump their shit
- 59:21Speaker 3: every once in a while. You were like, you know, hey, look, motherfucker,
- 59:24Speaker 3: you know, get your shit together. Um, and each guy
- 59:27Speaker 3: was different. Like you, like John Lack, you would have
- 59:30Speaker 3: to go out and like, this guy's a raging bull
- 59:33Speaker 3: and it's like, okay, let me just get him refocused.
- 59:36Speaker 3: One time he couldn't throw you through like four boy
- 59:38Speaker 3: came out and like the fifth or sixth inning through,
- 59:41Speaker 3: he was dealing and through four straight balls. Next batter
- 59:47Speaker 3: comes up, ball one, ball two, and they're not even close.
- 59:50Speaker 3: And I'm like six straight balls. I'm like time. I
- 59:52Speaker 3: walk out there. I'm like, Hey man, just, uh, just
- 59:55Speaker 3: give me a little breather. He goes, I need these
- 59:56Speaker 3: motherfuckers to swing. I can't feel where it's going. One
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: of these motherfuckers would swing.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: I'll be fine.
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: I was like, okay, I'm, I'm going to go back now.
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: I was like, um, and, uh, I think everybody needs
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: a little bit different. There's one cool story that I,
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: I haven't told. I don't think publicly we're in Boston
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: and we're about midway through the season.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: And, um, Will Middlebrooks is playing. Shout out, Will. Works
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: for the Red Sox now in the broadcast booth. Great guy.
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: And there's a rocket hit down to his left, right?
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: And he kind of olays it a little bit. But,
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: I mean, you'd have time to get in front of it.
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: Goes down the line. There was one out at the time.
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: And next guy gets on with a walk.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: So it's first and second, one out.
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: Next guy, base hit up the middle, can't, doesn't score,
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: so his base is loaded, and here comes Miguel Cabrera,
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: best hitter in.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: The league at the time for Detroit. We're playing Detroit.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: And I walk out, and I'm like, hey, just giving
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: you a breather here.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: Who's pitching?
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: Let's refocus. We're ground ball away. What'd you say?
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: Who's pitching?
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: Lester. Lester's pitching. Sorry.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Sorry. Miguel Cabrera owns.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: owns john leicester owns john leicester yeah so i walk
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: out to leicester and i'm like hey bro like just
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: give me a breather he goes fucking middle brooks he
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: can't gotta get in front of that ball i was
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: like middle brooks i was like that was a fucking
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: rocket bro you better refocus we got the best here
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: on the planet coming up and we're up to i
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: think we were up two runs at the time and
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: it was late in the start and he just was
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: focused on the wrong thing but i i he he
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: hates when i tell his story He throws a cutter
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: to Miguel Cabrera and gets him to hit into a 6-4-3,
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: and we get out of the inning. But it was just–
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: they get– their minds go in different places on the mound,
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: and sometimes you got to just walk out and, like,
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: try to talk some sense into them or refocus them.
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: Or some guys you got to, like, you know, calm
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: down a little bit. It's a wild card out there.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Yeah. It's needed, though. Right?
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: It's definitely needed to go calm the pitchers down and.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: Slow down a little bit. Well, you've been there. You've
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: been there.
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: And you, like, your veteran leadership, I know with New York,
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: you were saying sometimes you'd go and just talk to
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: the young guys out there. The mound meetings, especially when
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: it's players only, are usually really valuable in getting everybody
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: on the same page. I remember things were going crazy
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: early on. We had a night game in Pittsburgh, and
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: we're late in the game. I think we're up three runs.
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: Pittsburgh's coming back. They were good.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: It was 0-5. I mean, 15. my first year there.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: And it was like Addy and, and Javi and all
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: you guys came in, they were coming back on us
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: and you just scored a run. And that place got
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: super loud. And I think we're up to, and I
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: remember walking out there and just going, Hey, all we got,
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: let's just get outs, just get out. You know, I
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: felt the first time as a veteran, like all these guys,
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: things are moving fast. I'm like, we're fine. Like they're
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: not winning this game. Let's just one out at a time.
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: Don't try to, Don't try to be a hero. Don't
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: try to be jazz trying to spin and throw that,
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: try to turn that double play when you don't have it.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Like, you know, you don't
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: have that.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: What a shot right there.
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: A little stray.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: Sorry, guys.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: A little stray. A little stray out the door. But
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: I just, that was the first moment that came to
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: my mind. That's great.
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: When guys speed up and they try to, they try to,
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: we try to create out or do more.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: It usually is, is not a good result.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. Well, great questions. Those, those, those daily
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: mailbags are the best. Rossi, another episode in the books.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: Thank you, everyone, for watching and listening. Please, please, please
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: send your questions in, your YouTube comments, rossinrizzo at gmail.com.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: Tonight will be game four of the American League Division Series,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: Guardians at the White Sox. We'll be live with you
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: tomorrow on our reaction, and then we will be previewing
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: the championship series. From eight teams to four teams. Thanks, everyone,
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: for listening. Enjoy playoff baseball. This is when our sport
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: is at our brightest.
