- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the
- 0:03Epstein Chronicles. In this episode, we're going to pick up
- 0:06where he left off with Bill Gates and the transcript
- 0:10from his interview with Congress. Question what were your first
- 0:14impressions of mister Epstein? Answer? While he talked about a
- 0:18lot of scientists that he would talk to, were business
- 0:21leaders he would talk to, And he made that sound
- 0:23fairly extensive, you know, across a wide range of topics,
- 0:27somebody who focuses time on a large number of subjects
- 0:31and new people who were deeply engaged in those areas. Questions,
- 0:35So he made a good impression. Answer, you know, he's
- 0:38kind of a unique person. You know, based on the
- 0:40limited knowledge I have had at the time, it was
- 0:43kind of a unique thing to have this large house
- 0:46in Manhattan and to mention quite a wide range of
- 0:49people from both business and academic areas. I would say,
- 0:52you know, I thought that was unusual. Question who else
- 0:56was with you at this first dinner you had with
- 0:58mister Epstein in twenty eleven? Answer for dinner itself, just
- 1:02doctor Nikolich? Question were other people traveling with you for that?
- 1:06Is that what you meant? Answer? No, questions who at
- 1:09the dinner you were with doctor Nikolch, mister Epstein, and
- 1:12nobody else was at the dinner? Is that right? Answer?
- 1:16That's right question. And did you understand his job or
- 1:19career to be when you met with him? Answer? I'm
- 1:22not sure if it was at night, but over time
- 1:24he suggested that he provided tax advice and advice on
- 1:27wills and a wide variety of people, both from Wall Street,
- 1:30from the Middle East. You know that he was in
- 1:33a position of trust with a number of wealthy people.
- 1:37Question and you said you didn't get the sense he
- 1:39was offering you any kind of service, So he wasn't
- 1:41offering you the tax or estate services of any kind. Answer? No,
- 1:46There came a time later when he brought it up,
- 1:48you know he could help on taxes, and I rather
- 1:51sternly rebuff the effort. Question sure, and we can get
- 1:54more into that a bit later. So at this point,
- 1:57meeting him for the first time in twenty eleven, did
- 2:00you understand him to already be wealthy at that point? Answer? Well, certainly,
- 2:05you know, just the house alone represented a significant amount
- 2:09of wealth I'd never seen. I don't think to this
- 2:12day I've seen a private house in Manhattan. That's quite
- 2:14that spacious question. Did you have any idea at the
- 2:18time how he acquired his money? Answer? No, to this day,
- 2:21I find it a bit confusing question. And again will
- 2:25get a bit deeper into your interactions with mister Epstein later,
- 2:28but just for now, could you briefly characterize the nature
- 2:32of the relationship that you had with mister Epstein between
- 2:35twenty eleven and twenty fourteen. Was he a friend? Was
- 2:39he a business associate? Answer? No, he certainly wasn't a friend.
- 2:44You know, he made an effort to extend the relationship
- 2:46with various invitations, but you know, eventually, you know, as
- 2:50I talked about my work in global health for the
- 2:52Gates Foundation, he suggested that he could raise substantial amounts
- 2:56of money from people that he knew to help with
- 2:59that endeavor, and he became the primary focus out In
- 3:02twenty thirteen, twenty eleven, we just had you know, two dinners,
- 3:07one where it was with Jess Daily and Larry Summers,
- 3:10one where he was just drop them by. So, you know,
- 3:12three encounters in twenty eleven and then over a year
- 3:16passes and I see him twice in late twenty twelve
- 3:19and then it's I think Spring twenty thirteen where this
- 3:23purported availability of people who then they would sit and
- 3:26talk about their wills, their taxes, that as part of
- 3:30the process they would realize they had significant amount of
- 3:32access money and hopefully they would want to give that
- 3:36philanthropically and hopefully they would consider giving that to global health.
- 3:40So that became the focus in spring of twenty thirteen. Question,
- 3:44so you said he would give invitations for things. Were
- 3:47these social functions or philanthropic or otherwise? Answer? No, they
- 3:52weren't social. I mean, there was one time at the
- 3:54end of a dinner David Blaine came and so that
- 3:57was a lighter thing. He's a magician. But the meetings
- 4:01they were always about the world and you know what
- 4:03was going on. Obviously when somebody like Larry Summers or
- 4:07Jess Staley is there, they're talking about what they see
- 4:10in the world, what they expect. So it's a wide
- 4:12ranging discussion. Question So did you ever socialize with Jeffrey Epstein? Answer? No,
- 4:18I would not say I was socializing with them. I
- 4:20was at a dinner where a wide range of serious
- 4:22topics came up. When he, for example, invited me to
- 4:25come to his island. That would have been socializing, and
- 4:28I didn't do that. You know, one time in Paris
- 4:31he asked me to go to a show, and I
- 4:33said that would not be a good idea. I chose
- 4:36not to do that. Question So he did invite you
- 4:39to a couple of social functions and you just rejected him. Answer?
- 4:43He did many things to try to deepen the relationship,
- 4:46including various invitations. Question did you ever discuss sexual behavior
- 4:51of any kind with Jeffrey Epstein? Answer no. Question Did
- 4:55you ever witness Jeffrey Epstein engaging in sexual contact of
- 4:59any kind? Answer no. Question did you ever witness Epstein
- 5:04receive a massage from a young woman or a girl?
- 5:07Answer no. Question Whether often young women or girls at
- 5:11the places where you would meet with Epstein? Answer no.
- 5:15The only time anyone who I'd call a girl was
- 5:17around after that first dinner, Eva Dubin came and she
- 5:21had her daughter with her. Other than that, there were
- 5:23no young women at any other times I saw with Epstein.
- 5:27Question so none of Epstein's employees, we understand, were younger women.
- 5:31Did you ever meet any of those people? Answer? I
- 5:35was not introduced to them, But you know, like when
- 5:37you go to the New York thing. I think they
- 5:39opened the door. Jeffrey, mister Epstein had what appeared to
- 5:44be administrative assistance with them, and the extent of my
- 5:47contact with them was that, you know, they were there
- 5:50as I would go into the meeting. They never attended
- 5:53any meeting that I was in. There were several occasions
- 5:55where mister Ebstein asked me to be photographed with them
- 5:58at the end of the meeting. I was not introduced
- 6:01to them as part of that. That was quite brief.
- 6:04One of the admins stayed when David Blaine did one
- 6:07of his tricks, so she was standing around then. And
- 6:10there was also a time when I took a flight
- 6:12from Newark to Palm Beach and Jeffrey had two admin
- 6:15assistants with them who sat in the front cabin. But
- 6:18so I saw them as I walked onto the plane
- 6:21and as I walked off the plane. So to the
- 6:23other admins that were around, you know, who appeared to
- 6:26be women, I believe they did not look to be underage.
- 6:29I think I fully described any contact with women around
- 6:32Epstein question, thank you, did you ever engage in sexual
- 6:36contact of any kind in the presence of Jeffrey Epstein.
- 6:40Answer no question. Did you ever engage in sexual contact
- 6:44with a person introduced to you by or affiliated with
- 6:47Jeffrey Epstein? Answer no question. Did Jeffrey Epstein or any
- 6:52of his associates ever offer you a young woman or
- 6:55a girl for the purpose of sex? Answer no question.
- 6:59Did you ever receive a massage that was arranged by
- 7:02Jeffrey Epstein or any of his staff or associates, answer
- 7:05no question. We already discussed that you were aware that
- 7:09he had been convicted of his sex crime, But to
- 7:11be clear, at the time, were you aware that he
- 7:14was a registered sex offender? Answer? I was not. Question.
- 7:18Do you recall when you first learned that he was
- 7:20a registered sex offender? Answer? You know it's really twenty
- 7:24eighteen one, a Miami newspapers described the sort of extensive
- 7:27and horrific details of what he had done before his
- 7:31two thousand and eight two thousand and nine conviction, that
- 7:33I became aware of the extent of his crimes, and
- 7:36I believe that's when I first knew that he actually
- 7:39registered as a sex offender. Question and so you ended
- 7:43your relationship with mister Ebstein in late twenty fourteen, as
- 7:46you've mentioned today, and you just said that you learned
- 7:49he was a sex offender and more of the extent
- 7:51of his crimes in twenty eighteen. To be clear, did
- 7:54you have any interaction with mister Ebstein after twenty fourteen?
- 8:00Did not? Question? Did you have any communication with mister
- 8:03Epstein directly or through an intermediary during that time? Answer? Yeah,
- 8:08right after twenty fourteen. There was an email sent to me.
- 8:11After twenty fourteen, he sent me quite a bit of emails.
- 8:15The majority of emails that he sent to me actually
- 8:17were after I'd cut off all contact. Most of those
- 8:20I did not read, but in the early period there
- 8:23was some that I did read. One of those sought
- 8:26reimbursement for what he purported was expenses that he paid
- 8:29with a woman who he became aware of was a
- 8:32woman who I had an affair with, and I communicated
- 8:35to my key person, top person at Gates Ventures, Larry Cohen,
- 8:39that we were never going to pay anything, and so
- 8:42in that sense, I did have direct communication or indirect
- 8:45communication with them, and I think that was in the
- 8:47months after I cut off direct contact. Question. Okay, we'll
- 8:51get into that a little bit more later, but just
- 8:53a few questions about that. So this person that you
- 8:56had the affair with is at Milla Antonova? Answer yes,
- 9:01question and you said you directed your staff not to
- 9:04reimburse mister Epstein for payments he was requesting. They were
- 9:08you said, reimbursements for expenses he was covering for miss Antonova.
- 9:12Is that right? Answer? That's what he represented. Question Why
- 9:16would he want you to reimburse him for that? Answer?
- 9:19You know, I viewed it as a tactic to re
- 9:21engage with me. I'd never ask him to do anything
- 9:24with respect to a person worth discussing, So I was
- 9:27rather surprised. That was the first time I knew explicitly
- 9:30that he'd become aware of that affair. Question. So you
- 9:34did not know until I'm sorry, this was in twenty
- 9:37fourteen that we're discussing now. Answer, yeah, late twenty fourteen,
- 9:42maybe early twenty fifteen, where he's seeking reimbursement. Question, So
- 9:46you did not know until late twenty fourteen or early
- 9:49twenty fifteen that Jeffrey Epstein was aware of any of
- 9:54your affairs or just this affair. Answer in the termination
- 9:58or exit discussion relative to doctor Nikolch, which is as
- 10:02early as I think spring of twenty thirteen, mister Epstein
- 10:05made some bail references that made me wonder whether he
- 10:08had become aware, which, you know, the only way I
- 10:11can imagine that would have been happening was through doctor
- 10:14Nicolch of either one or two affairs that I'd had
- 10:18that doctor Nikolicch was aware of, but until the specific
- 10:21reimbursement requests, it was a veil type of thing that
- 10:24he would say, you know, we should all want to
- 10:27remain friends. Question do you know what exactly the expenses
- 10:31he paid for for miss Antonova were? Answer? I have
- 10:35no idea. You know, he wasn't an honest person, so
- 10:38understanding did he pay those expenses or not? I have
- 10:41no knowledge? Question And we'll talk a little bit more
- 10:45about that a little bit later. So we can go
- 10:47ahead and move along. Mister Emmer, we've had another member joined.
- 10:51Can you please announce yourself for the record, James Walkinshaw,
- 10:54eleven District, Virginia. Now mister spector asking questions. Thank you,
- 11:00mister Gates, and again we'll come back to some of
- 11:02those topics and my apologies. We're probably going to bounce
- 11:05around a little bit. We're going to try to have
- 11:08some sort of you know, semblance of chronology. Here, Emmer,
- 11:11we've had another member joined. Can he please announce himself
- 11:14for the record? Congressman Eric Burlison, Missouri. Question, so we've
- 11:20already begun talking about doctor Nikolch, but for the record,
- 11:23who is doctor Nikolich? Answered doctor Nikolich. He is a
- 11:27person who worked at the Gates Foundation on the diagnostic
- 11:30strategy for a period. Then he left the Gates Foundation
- 11:33and came to work at my private office, which was
- 11:35called the BGC three. It's been renamed to Gates Ventures.
- 11:41It's the same private office. So he worked there. I
- 11:44think his title was Science Advisor from something like twenty
- 11:48ten until one was his last day end of twenty thirteen. Yeah,
- 11:52until the end of twenty thirteen. Question and just very briefly,
- 11:56because we're going to be discussing his employment dispute, but
- 11:59why did you leave his employment at the end of
- 12:01twenty thirteen? Just briefly, did you fire him? Did he resign?
- 12:05What exactly occurred? Answer? Doctor Nikolch when he worked for me,
- 12:10had decided that he wanted to become a venture capitalist,
- 12:14and so he said, hey, you know, working for you,
- 12:17I can just make a salary. I understand about biotech companies,
- 12:20which ones are going to be successful. I think both
- 12:23in terms of impact and making money, that's where I
- 12:25should go. And so more than a year before he left,
- 12:28we talked about that. I said, you know, why don't
- 12:31you stay another year. You can make some up to
- 12:33three investments during the time you're with me, you know,
- 12:36sort of practice venture capital type investment, and we'll share
- 12:39the profit of those investments. So doctor Nikolch, you know,
- 12:43had decided that he was moving on and was going
- 12:45to venture capital. His actual exit was somewhat accelerated by
- 12:49the fact that I share with my wife at the
- 12:51time that he was aware of the affairs that I had,
- 12:55and she and I discussed that I should probably have
- 12:57him leave sooner rather than later. So that was a
- 13:00factor in terms of the timing of his exit question. So,
- 13:04in summary, he was already kind of had, you know,
- 13:06one foot out the door to some degree, but it
- 13:09was accelerated by the disclosure of your affairs to your
- 13:12then wife, Melinda French Gates. Is that right answer? That's right?
- 13:16I mean, I don't know what would have happened if
- 13:19I hadn't given him the opportunity to make the investments,
- 13:21and he was sort of saying that he didn't want
- 13:23to go and do that, and so I think I
- 13:25extended the amount of time he stayed with me by
- 13:27letting him make up to three investments. Question would you
- 13:30say doctor Nikolich was one of your closest advisers? Answer?
- 13:34I have a lot of advisors, but he as my
- 13:36science advisor at Gates Venture. He was a valuable advisor
- 13:40to me. Did you see him as purely professional? Was
- 13:44it purely a professional relationship or was he a friend
- 13:47of yours as well? Answer? That was a professional relationship.
- 13:52I mean where you draw the line there. I was
- 13:55friendly with doctor Nikolch, but I didn't socialize with him.
- 13:58He didn't come to my house. I didn't go to
- 13:59his house. Question When was the last time you communicated
- 14:03with doctor nikolic Answer? Many years ago? Question can you
- 14:07give me an estimate. Was it twenty fourteen when he
- 14:10left employment or was it after that? Answer? There was
- 14:13an MIT advisory committee for some of the work the
- 14:16Foundation was doing with MIT, and he stayed on that
- 14:19committee for I think a year after he left, And
- 14:22that was probably the last direct communication that I had
- 14:25with him in those couple of years where he stayed
- 14:28on the Advisory committee and no communication since then. All right, folks,
- 14:32we're gonna wrap up right here, and in the next
- 14:34episode dealing with the topic, we're gonna pick up where
- 14:36we left off. All the information that goes with this
- 14:39episode can be found in the description box.
