- 2:31Speaker 4: zero zero eight get in a little out of my
- 2:34Speaker 4: lane here with our next guests, we're going to talk
- 2:36Speaker 4: about flowers, all right, to a certain extent. Marjorie Cook
- 2:40Speaker 4: and Toy Hardy with the Canaug Garden Club, and they're
- 2:42Speaker 4: here to tell us about a big event happening next
- 2:44Speaker 4: Monday and Tuesday at the Clay Center. Good morning, and
- 2:46Speaker 4: we will start with you. Marjorie, Good morning, Good morning, Dave,
- 2:49Speaker 4: thanks for having us, thanks for being here. And Tory
- 2:51Speaker 4: very nice to meet you as well. I'm gonna have
- 2:53Speaker 4: to have you definitely step into that microphone a little bit,
- 2:56Speaker 4: all right, all right, so big event happened at the
- 2:58Speaker 4: Clay Center one week from today, also the following day
- 3:01Speaker 4: on Tuesday. Marjorie's what's going on here?
- 3:04Speaker 6: Yeah, really a wonderful event upcoming. And to break it down,
- 3:08Speaker 6: it is a it is like a pop up museum
- 3:11Speaker 6: for flowers and all things outdoors. And it is something
- 3:17Speaker 6: that our Garden Club does not do but once every
- 3:20Speaker 6: twenty years. It is a it is called Motherland Appalachian Beauty.
- 3:26Speaker 6: It is a flower show, a Garden Club of America
- 3:30Speaker 6: sponsored flower show, and it will have some incredible things
- 3:34Speaker 6: on display available Monday afternoon three thirty to five and
- 3:39Speaker 6: then all day Tuesday, ten to five. And we just
- 3:42Speaker 6: wanted to come on to say this is so unusual
- 3:45Speaker 6: and it happens so infrequently. It is something to see.
- 3:48Speaker 4: And that's just kind of like a national thing, right,
- 3:50Speaker 4: I mean, you have a lot of people that are
- 3:51Speaker 4: going to be coming in for this, right we do.
- 3:53Speaker 6: We have we expect competitors for this flower show. It
- 3:56Speaker 6: is a competition to come from not only West virgin
- 4:00Speaker 6: but probably Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, and possibly even from farther.
- 4:06Speaker 6: So folks bring their specimens and their floral designs and
- 4:11Speaker 6: it is. It is going to be fantastic and it
- 4:14Speaker 6: obviously with live things, it is a short window and
- 4:17Speaker 6: things look good for a few days, so it is
- 4:19Speaker 6: here and then it is gone. So we wanted to
- 4:21Speaker 6: tell your listeners to come take a look because it
- 4:24Speaker 6: is going to be gorgeous toilets.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Let's bring you in here. Marjorie, I've known each other
- 4:29Speaker 4: for a while, but you're a newcomer to the show.
- 4:30Speaker 4: What's're involvement in all this.
- 4:32Speaker 5: I'm one of the Flower Show chairs. So we developed
- 4:35Speaker 5: and wrote the schedule for this Flower Show, and it
- 4:38Speaker 5: really highlights Appalachian what is unique and wonderful about the
- 4:42Speaker 5: area that we live in. You know, West Virginia is
- 4:44Speaker 5: the only state this is all within the Appalachian Mountains,
- 4:48Speaker 5: and it makes us unique. You know, our topography is unusual.
- 4:52Speaker 5: We've got the mountains. It makes our communities very small
- 4:55Speaker 5: because we can't live anywhere else, and that means that
- 4:58Speaker 5: they have to very self reliant. They have to grow
- 5:02Speaker 5: their own vegetables, they had to build their own house,
- 5:04Speaker 5: they had to even be their own doctors.
- 5:06Speaker 7: One of the.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Classes that we have is a container garden and it's
- 5:12Speaker 5: plant five plants that might be in a pioneer garden.
- 5:14Speaker 5: So you're not only going to be planting your squash,
- 5:18Speaker 5: you're also going to be planting your sage because that
- 5:20Speaker 5: helps with upper respiratory conditions.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Well, certainly, that's really interesting. I have information posted about
- 5:27Speaker 4: this on my social media because this is a big
- 5:29Speaker 4: deal for Charleston. The hostess event, right.
- 5:31Speaker 6: It is, and we are at the Clay Center. It's
- 5:33Speaker 6: easy access in and out. And the four classes that
- 5:37Speaker 6: we showcase. We've got floral design, so in that case
- 5:41Speaker 6: you think of flower arrangements, but some are very modern
- 5:45Speaker 6: and some will be very different. Some will we have
- 5:49Speaker 6: quilt displays of flower designs that look like quilts, very unusual.
- 5:55Speaker 6: So we've got floral design, We've got horticulture, which means
- 5:59Speaker 6: cuts dems or cut branches, and all of them are competing,
- 6:03Speaker 6: so you're going to get to see all of the finest.
- 6:06Speaker 6: Then we have a photography component of the exhibit huge,
- 6:10Speaker 6: and then botanical arts, and I'm going to kick it
- 6:13Speaker 6: to Tory.
- 6:14Speaker 4: To tell you how botanical arts without your major in
- 6:17Speaker 4: college sounds.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Is crafting for adults. This way I like to look
- 6:24Speaker 5: at it. Botanical arts are entries in a floor in
- 6:27Speaker 5: a flower show that are made out of all plant materials.
- 6:30Speaker 5: So that can be pine needles, it can be the
- 6:36Speaker 5: stamens of a flower, and but it has to be
- 6:39Speaker 5: all natural. And they can be the surf. They can
- 6:41Speaker 5: have surface treatment, they can be painted, they can be shellacked,
- 6:44Speaker 5: they can be varnished. And so we have classes. One
- 6:48Speaker 5: of the classes we have is uh since we are
- 6:52Speaker 5: West Virginia has the newest national park, one of the
- 6:56Speaker 5: classes is Badge of Travels and is to make a
- 6:59Speaker 5: badge the real imagined State Park.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Okay, how big is this stuff? I mean as far
- 7:04Speaker 4: as nationwide, I mean as far as a hobby for
- 7:07Speaker 4: a lot of people. It's a profession. But I mean
- 7:09Speaker 4: how popular is this?
- 7:10Speaker 7: Yes?
- 7:10Speaker 6: Well, we Tory and I are both members of a
- 7:13Speaker 6: local club called Canag Garden Club. We are one of
- 7:17Speaker 6: two hundred clubs nationwide and all total, there are eighteen
- 7:21Speaker 6: thousand members in that club, so we have a national affiliation.
- 7:25Speaker 6: Canag Garden Club is the only GCA club in the
- 7:29Speaker 6: state and we're trying to just grow popularity.
- 7:33Speaker 8: It is.
- 7:34Speaker 6: We not only have an interest in floral design, but
- 7:37Speaker 6: our garden club is very interested in conservation, and I'm
- 7:42Speaker 6: missing a component of education. So part of us wants
- 7:46Speaker 6: to get folks to the show not just for the beauty,
- 7:49Speaker 6: but there are educational classes, students would be interested, folks
- 7:54Speaker 6: who like wandering in museums, folks who are gardeners, and
- 8:00Speaker 6: to a great group, and Dave, I want to get
- 8:02Speaker 6: you there, all.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Right, that sounds good. As I said, I'm kind of
- 8:06Speaker 4: out of my lane on this. Marjorie reached out to
- 8:07Speaker 4: me about this, and I said, sure, come in talk
- 8:09Speaker 4: about because this really is a big deal to have
- 8:11Speaker 4: this in Charleston and again, and I'll get back to
- 8:13Speaker 4: it here one second. Do need to let you know
- 8:14Speaker 4: what The Dave Island Show in five eighty Live is
- 8:16Speaker 4: brought to you by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston
- 8:19Speaker 4: Dirty Birds. We'll talk about the Birds a little bit
- 8:21Speaker 4: later on in the show. They have made it to
- 8:22Speaker 4: the Championship Round. Games one and two will be played
- 8:25Speaker 4: Tomorrow night and Wednesday night at Gomart Ballpark here in Charleston, Charleston,
- 8:28Speaker 4: taking on the Revolution of York. You can visit dirty
- 8:31Speaker 4: Birds Baseball dot Com from information and again, Jill Garin,
- 8:34Speaker 4: I think for the third straight day is going to
- 8:36Speaker 4: be on the show. Co it up just a little
- 8:38Speaker 4: bit later on. It is worth noting getting back to
- 8:40Speaker 4: the show, Tory and Marjorie, that admission is free, so
- 8:42Speaker 4: you certainly can't argue about the price.
- 8:44Speaker 6: Yes, yes, and we're trying to encourage folks like you know,
- 8:49Speaker 6: Edwood Summit to bring buses of folks to come see it.
- 8:51Speaker 4: That'll be kind of cool.
- 8:52Speaker 6: Yeah, it is a short, short lived show. And Dave,
- 8:55Speaker 6: the show compliments a zone meeting for members who are
- 9:02Speaker 6: coming from a four state region, so that is one
- 9:06Speaker 6: of the primary reasons for these folks coming into town.
- 9:08Speaker 6: So we have about one hundred and fifty guests coming
- 9:11Speaker 6: to Charleston and they have tours all over the city
- 9:14Speaker 6: to see various points of interest.
- 9:16Speaker 4: What will you take them on on the tours? I mean,
- 9:18Speaker 4: you may not be serving as a tour gap. But
- 9:20Speaker 4: because I was listening to the morning news this morning
- 9:22Speaker 4: and we just and I'm going to kind of butcher
- 9:25Speaker 4: the story, but we have two buildings here that have
- 9:28Speaker 4: been added i think to the National Historical Register, and
- 9:31Speaker 4: one of those is Capital Market and the other is
- 9:34Speaker 4: the many Keatam Shrine. So that's what it'd be a
- 9:37Speaker 4: good place to start.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Well, we have one of those in our tours. They're
- 9:41Speaker 5: going to be going to the Capitol.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Well, you got anybody from out of town, you got
- 9:45Speaker 4: to take them to Capital.
- 9:45Speaker 5: Marking to the Capital Market. We're also doing having a
- 9:49Speaker 5: tour or the art display at the Clay Center. And
- 9:53Speaker 5: the other one is a hike on the newest trail
- 9:56Speaker 5: the Jones I forget the name of it, Louden Heights Road,
- 10:02Speaker 5: the piece of property that they just cut new trails in.
- 10:06Speaker 6: Yeah, and we have Bev Campbell, one of our club members,
- 10:09Speaker 6: is taking folks on a hike on that trails.
- 10:11Speaker 4: I understand it.
- 10:12Speaker 6: And we have the president of the Garden Club of
- 10:15Speaker 6: America coming to Charleston for this event. So it's it's
- 10:18Speaker 6: a wonderful opportunity for the you know, for the city
- 10:21Speaker 6: to showcase what is beautiful here. And we just really
- 10:25Speaker 6: hope folks can come to the show to appreciate the
- 10:28Speaker 6: floral designs, the botanical arts, the photography, and the horticulture.
- 10:33Speaker 6: So it's it's really is something for everyone and we
- 10:36Speaker 6: really thank you for the opportunity.
- 10:38Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 10:38Speaker 6: Absolutely, And it highlights Appalachia. The show is called Motherland
- 10:43Speaker 6: Appalachian beauty.
- 10:45Speaker 4: It's it's certainly apply named. And again it's going to
- 10:48Speaker 4: be next Monday and Tuesday at the Clay Center Monday
- 10:52Speaker 4: evening hours I think.
- 10:53Speaker 6: Monday three thirty five pm, so a short window, but
- 10:57Speaker 6: the all the specimens will look the best on Tuesday
- 10:59Speaker 6: on Monday.
- 11:00Speaker 4: The specimens, like the way you say that, the specimens,
- 11:03Speaker 4: but that's going to be on Tuesdays. I mean, this is,
- 11:05Speaker 4: this is it's a great event to have this in Charleston.
- 11:07Speaker 4: It really is now. I've got information posted on my
- 11:10Speaker 4: social media pages about it. We have a little poster
- 11:13Speaker 4: on there if you want to, if you want to
- 11:14Speaker 4: check it out. I know you guys are are going
- 11:16Speaker 4: to be really busy with that. Marjorie Tory, I appreciate
- 11:18Speaker 4: you both for being here. Thanks a lot. We'll see
- 11:20Speaker 4: you next Monday and Tuesday at the Clay Center.

- 18:18Speaker 4: University of Charleston joins us now. Doctor roth Good morning
- 18:20Speaker 4: and welcome to the show.
- 18:22Speaker 18: Good morning, great to be here with you. Hey, I
- 18:26Speaker 18: understand someone might be celebrating a birthday.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Yes, it is my birthday. Thank you so much. I
- 18:31Speaker 4: appreciate you bringing it up. And also we kind of
- 18:33Speaker 4: got our wires cross there that may have been on me,
- 18:36Speaker 4: So I apologize. I had you today, you thought it
- 18:39Speaker 4: was another day. But luckily we have Gail Carterner to
- 18:41Speaker 4: come to the rescue of both of us, right.
- 18:44Speaker 18: That's what she does each and every day.
- 18:46Speaker 4: I apologize for that. I'll get with you a but
- 18:48Speaker 4: I do want to talk about an event last week.
- 18:52Speaker 4: The University of Charleston had an event at the Innovation Hub,
- 18:55Speaker 4: which is downtown. I got to say that is a
- 19:00Speaker 4: that is a great, great facility and a great addition
- 19:02Speaker 4: to downtown Charleston.
- 19:04Speaker 18: Yes, we're very pleased with how things are going. One
- 19:09Speaker 18: of the main programs that we offer there is called
- 19:11Speaker 18: a Business Accelerator Program, and it provides workshops, training, coaching, mentoring,
- 19:19Speaker 18: and advising to existing small and medium sized businesses to
- 19:23Speaker 18: help them scale up and grow. The program is funded
- 19:26Speaker 18: through a US e DA grant as well as matching
- 19:30Speaker 18: funds from the Benefit Venedem Foundation in the City of Charleston,
- 19:35Speaker 18: so it provides all of those things to small businesses
- 19:38Speaker 18: at no cost to them. So it's about a five
- 19:41Speaker 18: month experience. Most of the work is done virtually, but
- 19:46Speaker 18: we bring everybody together as a cohort once a month,
- 19:49Speaker 18: so it provides for some great networking opportunities for the
- 19:54Speaker 18: businesses to participate.
- 19:55Speaker 4: And I had an opportunity to sit down on that
- 19:57Speaker 4: meeting last week and I learned a heck of a
- 19:59Speaker 4: lot or, to be honest with you, just kind of
- 20:01Speaker 4: sitting there and taking it all in. Not that I
- 20:03Speaker 4: have a lot of business acumen myself, but I'd like
- 20:05Speaker 4: to be around those that do, and I learned a
- 20:07Speaker 4: lot and it sounds like it's beneficial to everybody involved.
- 20:12Speaker 18: Yes, absolutely, we're getting terrific feedback from the businesses that
- 20:16Speaker 18: have completed the Business Accelerator program. We're now in the
- 20:21Speaker 18: middle of Cohort number three, actively recruiting for another group
- 20:26Speaker 18: of eight to twelve businesses that will join us in
- 20:28Speaker 18: January for Cohort number four. So encourage everybody to just
- 20:34Speaker 18: jump on the University of Charleston website just search on
- 20:38Speaker 18: innovation and you'll find our Downtown Innovation Hub and the
- 20:42Speaker 18: Business Accelerator Program. Very easy application process, or if you're
- 20:46Speaker 18: in the neighborhood, have a small business. Just stop down
- 20:50Speaker 18: and visit us on Capitol Street and we'll be happy
- 20:53Speaker 18: to tell them more about the program and see if
- 20:55Speaker 18: it's a good shit for them.
- 20:57Speaker 4: Yeah, we're talking with doctor Marty Roth from the University
- 20:59Speaker 4: of Charles record semester. I understand for enrollment at u
- 21:03Speaker 4: SEE talk about that.
- 21:05Speaker 18: Yes, absolutely, we're very pleased. Given the pressures that we're
- 21:09Speaker 18: all reading about in higher education, that drop in the
- 21:13Speaker 18: number of students graduating from high school and so forth,
- 21:17Speaker 18: we're very pleased that we brought in over eight hundred
- 21:20Speaker 18: new students to u SEE this fall semester, students that
- 21:25Speaker 18: are enrolled in a degree seeking program. Our high water
- 21:30Speaker 18: mark over the past five years was seven hundred and eight,
- 21:33Speaker 18: so significant increase for us, so very excited, and that
- 21:37Speaker 18: brings our total enrollment to a high water mark as well,
- 21:42Speaker 18: with over twenty eight hundred students enrolled for the start
- 21:45Speaker 18: of the fall semester. So as you can imagine, we're
- 21:49Speaker 18: become pretty diversified campus with lots of different programs offered
- 21:54Speaker 18: in Charleston, in Beckley and online, serving traditional high school
- 22:00Speaker 18: graduates as well as adult learners. So certain programs we
- 22:05Speaker 18: saw really great increases in enrollments. Others didn't do quite
- 22:10Speaker 18: as well, but overall the net effect was terrific for
- 22:14Speaker 18: us as fault.
- 22:15Speaker 4: What's responsible, Doctor Roth, for more people choosing the University
- 22:19Speaker 4: at Charleston.
- 22:20Speaker 18: Yeah, I think it's a few things, Dave. One is
- 22:23Speaker 18: we are extremely student focused. That's our primary core value.
- 22:28Speaker 18: It's something we talk about each and every day. That's
- 22:31Speaker 18: why we're here. That's what gets us excited to get
- 22:34Speaker 18: up and go to work every day is having the
- 22:37Speaker 18: opportunity to work with students and help transform their lives
- 22:41Speaker 18: and enable them to achieve their personal professional goals. We
- 22:46Speaker 18: also have a mission that carries across all of our
- 22:49Speaker 18: program and that's we're going to educate each and every
- 22:52Speaker 18: student for three things, a life of productive work, enlightened living,
- 22:56Speaker 18: and community involvement. So we are very committed to our
- 23:01Speaker 18: core values, to our mission statement, and I think what
- 23:05Speaker 18: that ends up providing is students with a really high
- 23:09Speaker 18: quality experience with faculty and staff who care about them,
- 23:13Speaker 18: who work very closely with them. And our kind of
- 23:17Speaker 18: our view is once we admit a student to the
- 23:20Speaker 18: University of Charleston, it's becomes our responsibility to make sure
- 23:26Speaker 18: they're having a great experience and to get them to
- 23:28Speaker 18: the finish line.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Talking with doctor Marty Rothy, President of the University of
- 23:32Speaker 4: Charleston to Dave Allen Show and five any line brought

- 23:42Speaker 4: What's got you excited on campus this semester? Sir? What's
- 23:45Speaker 4: what's what's on your planner? And what's what's making you
- 23:48Speaker 4: smile these days?
- 23:49Speaker 18: Yeah, great question, Dave.
- 23:51Speaker 19: Well.
- 23:51Speaker 18: Of course, athletics is very big for us here at
- 23:54Speaker 18: you See, so our false sport teams are off to
- 23:56Speaker 18: a great start. We had a terrific homecoming weekend and
- 24:00Speaker 18: our football team had a great victory down at UC Stadium.
- 24:06Speaker 18: Both of our soccer teams one volleyball team hosted a
- 24:09Speaker 18: tournament and did great. So Athletics is always a lot
- 24:12Speaker 18: of fun for us here at U SEE, and we
- 24:14Speaker 18: enjoy supporting our student athletes as they do what they
- 24:18Speaker 18: love to do. We're also very proud of the work
- 24:22Speaker 18: that we continue to do with the first responder community
- 24:25Speaker 18: here in West Virginia. In the fall of twenty twenty two,
- 24:28Speaker 18: we held three hundred emergency medical services personnel earn a
- 24:33Speaker 18: fifteen college credit leadership certificate program that was funded by
- 24:40Speaker 18: Governor Justice and the Legislature. And this fall we have
- 24:45Speaker 18: close to four hundred law enforcement personnel enrolled in a
- 24:50Speaker 18: senior Leadership Certificate for law enforcement through a grant that
- 24:54Speaker 18: we were able to able to procure through the US
- 24:58Speaker 18: Department of Justice with the help of Senators Capitol and
- 25:02Speaker 18: Senators Mansion. So we're really committed to take the deep
- 25:07Speaker 18: expertise that we have in leadership education and training and
- 25:11Speaker 18: provided to different parts of the West Virginia community that
- 25:16Speaker 18: really could benefit from it and first responder community EMS,
- 25:21Speaker 18: law enforcement corrections or groups that were really proud to help.
- 25:25Speaker 4: And before we let you go, what are some things
- 25:26Speaker 4: people can look forward to in the future. I know
- 25:29Speaker 4: you got a golf tournament coming up. I'm going to
- 25:31Speaker 4: get into that a little bit later on. But what
- 25:33Speaker 4: else is in the future for the University of Charleston.
- 25:36Speaker 18: Yeah, So, Dave, if we're not innovative, I don't know
- 25:39Speaker 18: what we are here at, you see. So we launched
- 25:42Speaker 18: three new programs this fall. A Doctor of Nurse anesthesia
- 25:46Speaker 18: practice program and partnership with CMC, a bachelor's degree in
- 25:53Speaker 18: Criminal Justice leadership as well as a master's in Mental
- 25:58Speaker 18: health counseling. And we're in the process of working on
- 26:01Speaker 18: some new offerings that we hope to bring online in
- 26:05Speaker 18: the fall of twenty twenty five, including a bachelor's degree
- 26:11Speaker 18: in nutrition and an artificial intelligence major within our computer
- 26:16Speaker 18: science degree. So we're always trying to identify what are
- 26:20Speaker 18: the areas where there's a great demand for jobs and
- 26:24Speaker 18: opportunities for us to work with students of all ages
- 26:28Speaker 18: and backgrounds and provide them with the skills to get
- 26:31Speaker 18: great jobs here in West Virginia and throughout the region.
- 26:34Speaker 4: And I'll just throw the center as we close on
- 26:36Speaker 4: this golf tournament, there is a fundraiser for the University
- 26:38Speaker 4: of Charleston coming up on October the eighteenth at Edgewood
- 26:42Speaker 4: Country Club. Noontime, shotguns start, lunch provided by Chick fil A,
- 26:45Speaker 4: eleven o'clock and it's on a Friday, if my calendar
- 26:49Speaker 4: glancing is correct, So be a good way to kick
- 26:52Speaker 4: off for a weekend early, play a little golf and
- 26:54Speaker 4: raise money for UC.
- 26:56Speaker 18: That's absolutely right. Will Johnson does a terrific job coaching
- 27:00Speaker 18: both our men's and women's teams. They're having a great
- 27:03Speaker 18: fall season as well, and it will be an opportunity
- 27:05Speaker 18: not only to play on a great course and I
- 27:08Speaker 18: have some great food, but to meet our golf student
- 27:11Speaker 18: athletes who are from all over the state, all over
- 27:14Speaker 18: the country, all over the world. Really terrific young men
- 27:17Speaker 18: and women that you know everybody would enjoyed having a
- 27:19Speaker 18: chance to meet.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Indeed, doctor Marty Roth, I appreciate you being flexible this morning.
- 27:23Speaker 4: We had a little mess up on my end one
- 27:25Speaker 4: hundred percent on my end on the scheduling, but Gail
- 27:28Speaker 4: Carter was right on top of it and got you in.
- 27:30Speaker 4: I appreciate you being here.
- 27:31Speaker 18: Thanks a lot, absolutely, Dave, great talking with you.
- 27:34Speaker 4: As well, Doctor Marty Roth. Again for the University of Charleston.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Again that golf fundraiser is at Edgewood. It is happening
- 27:40Speaker 4: on October the eighteenth, noontime, shotguns start and lunch provided

- 33:53Speaker 4: or something ridiculous like that.
- 33:54Speaker 9: We played them for the final six games of the
- 33:56Speaker 9: regular season and then played them for the playoff games
- 33:59Speaker 9: as well, so it's ten games in a row against them.
- 34:00Speaker 9: Now we're playing York. We've only seen them six times
- 34:03Speaker 9: this season, so it's going to be a lot different.
- 34:05Speaker 4: Have we done against yorksion not bad?
- 34:07Speaker 9: So remember in June, that was when we were dealing
- 34:09Speaker 9: with all of the players finally being signed and by
- 34:12Speaker 9: the major league team, So that was when we were
- 34:14Speaker 9: in a bit of a rut. So New York has
- 34:16Speaker 9: not seen the new and improved dirty words.
- 34:18Speaker 4: Andy, let's talk about this championship run. I mean, you know,
- 34:22Speaker 4: you guys had had a great season, struggled at times,
- 34:25Speaker 4: but rebound it as quality sports teams are apt to do.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Went down to well, you started here and then you
- 34:31Speaker 4: went down to Gastonia and you were able to wrap
- 34:33Speaker 4: up this series. How big is this now for the
- 34:35Speaker 4: Dirty Birds to be in the championship round.
- 34:37Speaker 7: Oh, it's amazing.
- 34:38Speaker 22: And I mean, first of all, I wouldn't mind playing
- 34:39Speaker 22: Gastonia considering we just we just celebrated on their fields
- 34:43Speaker 22: two times in a week. I'm pretty happy about that.
- 34:46Speaker 22: But now it's been absolutely amazing, and I mean, this
- 34:49Speaker 22: is it's it's just been a lot of fun. And
- 34:51Speaker 22: I think that, you know, taking a step back, the
- 34:54Speaker 22: relationship that I have with PJ Phillips and we've kind
- 34:57Speaker 22: of we've been talking about it a ton, and we've
- 34:58Speaker 22: done this before in a sense, but it's so much
- 35:00Speaker 22: more special here. And having all of the fans that
- 35:03Speaker 22: we had in Gastonia this past weekend, I mean, it
- 35:06Speaker 22: was NonStop discussion. I mean there was really more talk
- 35:08Speaker 22: about the amount of fans that we had there than
- 35:10Speaker 22: probably what was going on on the field.
- 35:12Speaker 7: So it is just unbelievably exciting.
- 35:14Speaker 22: It's so amazing and just so energizing having the community
- 35:18Speaker 22: support it so much, and the guys are great, you know,
- 35:21Speaker 22: like we mentioned, that's the beauty of having a two
- 35:23Speaker 22: half season that as great as we were the first
- 35:26Speaker 22: three weeks, then we lost like eight key impact players
- 35:30Speaker 22: getting signed. We lost the arguably the best player in
- 35:33Speaker 22: Atlantic League history to injury right around that time.
- 35:36Speaker 7: So we did have, you know, a little down period.
- 35:38Speaker 22: But then as soon as the second half hit, we
- 35:41Speaker 22: had a revamped pitching rotation, We had a revamped lineup.
- 35:45Speaker 22: Some of the guys that were kind of struggling in
- 35:47Speaker 22: the first half have been absolutely dominant the second half
- 35:50Speaker 22: and in the playoffs. So, I mean, these guys are
- 35:52Speaker 22: playing great pitching, hitting, you know, coaching, you name it.
- 35:55Speaker 7: They're really hitting on all cylinders.
- 35:58Speaker 4: Talking again Andy Shane, Joe Gearin from the Dirty Birds,
- 36:00Speaker 4: and you know, uh, this was such a history of
- 36:03Speaker 4: baseball in Charleston. We talk about going back, you know,
- 36:06Speaker 4: to the Senators and the Charlie's and the alley Cats
- 36:08Speaker 4: and the Power and and all of the all the
- 36:11Speaker 4: names we've had, to the Wheelers and and and to
- 36:13Speaker 4: just bring that back again and to have people seriously
- 36:17Speaker 4: jacked up about baseball again in.
- 36:19Speaker 7: Charleston, it's amazing.
- 36:20Speaker 22: I mean, I love that's one of the most special
- 36:22Speaker 22: things to me since I've lived here and since I've
- 36:24Speaker 22: been talking to people and everything that when you talk
- 36:26Speaker 22: to people, it is kind of funny and so cool
- 36:29Speaker 22: hearing them talk about their memories when it was the Charlie's,
- 36:32Speaker 22: hearing their memories when it was the alley Cats or
- 36:34Speaker 22: the Wheelers, and this happened, and I remember I went
- 36:37Speaker 22: with my grandfather and I can't wait to take my grandkids.
- 36:39Speaker 22: And you know, all of those memories that have been
- 36:42Speaker 22: ingrained in this community. Uh, it's just so amazing and
- 36:46Speaker 22: just fulfilling the hearing those and then being part of
- 36:49Speaker 22: it making new memories now. And just the electricity. The
- 36:53Speaker 22: energy at the ballpark last week was second to none.
- 36:55Speaker 22: I mean those Tuesday and Wednesday games. Even Wednesday we were,
- 36:58Speaker 22: you know, all due respect, we were a little flat
- 37:00Speaker 22: on the field. It's still it felt like postseason baseball.
- 37:03Speaker 7: It was awesome.
- 37:04Speaker 4: And you referenced the trip down to Gastonia. I saw
- 37:08Speaker 4: some of those pictures, guys that were posted online. I
- 37:10Speaker 4: thought these were taken from a home game. I thought
- 37:12Speaker 4: these were taken from gomart Ballpark, but they were Actually
- 37:14Speaker 4: you had that many fans that either lived in the
- 37:17Speaker 4: area or made the trip down to Gastonia.
- 37:18Speaker 22: You're spot on, and I'm sorry, especially that last game,
- 37:21Speaker 22: there's no chance that it didn't positively affect our outcome,
- 37:25Speaker 22: especially Saturday. I mean you could see how fired up
- 37:29Speaker 22: the guys were getting from having that huge, awesome section
- 37:32Speaker 22: and frankly there were multiple sections. I mean, that's what
- 37:34Speaker 22: was so cool is that it really did. I mean,
- 37:37Speaker 22: it didn't feel like an away game to me, and
- 37:39Speaker 22: I don't think it did to the players, and I
- 37:41Speaker 22: think that translated just massively to the results.
- 37:45Speaker 4: Talking to Andy Shane Joe Garen of the Dirty Birds,
- 37:47Speaker 4: the Birds have advanced to the Championship round. First two
- 37:50Speaker 4: games that Gomart Ballpark, The Dave Allen Show and five
- 37:52Speaker 4: YE Live has brought to you partly by Hustin's Pizza.
- 37:55Speaker 4: At your favorite Hustins this month, get a large at
- 37:56Speaker 4: and inch pepperoni pizza and an eight inch chocolate chip
- 37:59Speaker 4: cookie for only two twenty three to ninety nine. Do
- 38:01Speaker 4: you all us talk about promotions any same thing special
- 38:03Speaker 4: going on, same thing as last week.
- 38:05Speaker 9: As you've mentioned before, we are very just superstitious in
- 38:08Speaker 9: the baseball world. We are not changing the promotions kids
- 38:11Speaker 9: twelve and under get in for free two dollars, hot dogs, popcorn, soda, beer.
- 38:16Speaker 9: The kids zone will be there as well when am
- 38:18Speaker 9: issaying bark in the park as well.
- 38:20Speaker 4: And this is basically the same format as was the
- 38:23Speaker 4: series against Gastonia, right as. I mean, you'll play two
- 38:25Speaker 4: here and then you go on the road for the rest.
- 38:27Speaker 9: YEP best of five series two here and then you
- 38:29Speaker 9: can watch everything else on Flow Baseball or make the
- 38:31Speaker 9: trip up to York.
- 38:32Speaker 4: Up to York, how far is that from here? Approximately
- 38:34Speaker 4: off the top of your head.
- 38:35Speaker 7: Well, hopefully we.
- 38:36Speaker 22: Don't hit the insane amount of construction that we had
- 38:40Speaker 22: down in Gastonia, but I think without that five five
- 38:43Speaker 22: and a.
- 38:43Speaker 4: Half hours, all right, talk about the mood in the
- 38:45Speaker 4: clubhouse when when you guys clinched, I know you guys
- 38:48Speaker 4: were there. Talk about what that was like when you clinched.
- 38:51Speaker 7: I think it's amazing.
- 38:52Speaker 22: I think that, you know, And that's what's so awesome
- 38:54Speaker 22: about this league that whether it's the guys that have
- 38:58Speaker 22: joined us within the last month they were celebrating and
- 39:00Speaker 22: happy and post on Instagram as much as the guys
- 39:03Speaker 22: who were here in spring training.
- 39:04Speaker 7: I mean they really have jailed.
- 39:06Speaker 22: Well, they all have such a common goal that as
- 39:10Speaker 22: excited as they were, it was you know, it was
- 39:12Speaker 22: really kind of cool. I thing. I think it was genuine.
- 39:14Speaker 22: It wasn't some cliche that they were saying, you know,
- 39:16Speaker 22: it's not over yet. I mean, they were very, very excited,
- 39:19Speaker 22: they're very happy and everything, but they also knew we've
- 39:22Speaker 22: got one more week of business to do.
- 39:24Speaker 4: And again the series is going to start tomorrow and
- 39:26Speaker 4: actually get two here at Gomar Ballpark. And as Jill said,
- 39:29Speaker 4: all of those promotions from the two dollars stuff to
- 39:32Speaker 4: the kid zone to to bring your dogs out, everything
- 39:34Speaker 4: that happened just like it was last.
- 39:36Speaker 9: Year, exact same as everything. If you have questions, go
- 39:38Speaker 9: to our social media. We have all the information there
- 39:40Speaker 9: also to jordybirds baseball dot com.
- 39:42Speaker 4: And should people plan on getting their tickets like, I mean,
- 39:46Speaker 4: do you do you want people to get them in
- 39:47Speaker 4: advance or just to show up either. We just want
- 39:50Speaker 4: people to come up best come.
- 39:51Speaker 9: But I mean, if you have a specific seat that
- 39:53Speaker 9: you like, again, if you were here Tuesday and Wednesday
- 39:55Speaker 9: and you were in a seat, make sure you sit there.
- 39:58Speaker 9: N to win this series, We're superstitious, So go to
- 40:00Speaker 9: jordybirdsbaseball dot Com and get that specific seat that you want.
- 40:03Speaker 4: I love the Jill and I share the superstition thing. Andy,
- 40:06Speaker 4: I guess you're a true baseball gat to. I guess
- 40:08Speaker 4: you do as well.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 40:08Speaker 22: Well, Friday night, since we got there a little late,
- 40:11Speaker 22: I realized last minute that I forgot a belt, so
- 40:14Speaker 22: I was beltless for the first time. So damn well,
- 40:17Speaker 22: was beltless the next day. And I'm looking like I'm
- 40:20Speaker 22: going to be beltless moving forward.
- 40:21Speaker 4: So if you see Andy with his pants down, it's okay.
- 40:24Speaker 4: Don't call the police. It's okay. It's okay. Talk about
- 40:27Speaker 4: the new manager of PJ Phillips. I mean, you had
- 40:30Speaker 4: him in here on opening day, you guess were in
- 40:32Speaker 4: the studio here. Talk about what he's brought to this team.
- 40:34Speaker 7: Absolutely so.
- 40:35Speaker 22: I mean I've PJ and I've known each other and
- 40:37Speaker 22: kind of been together for the last five years, and
- 40:41Speaker 22: he brings such a different demeanor, vibe, and attitude than
- 40:44Speaker 22: any other manager in our league. And I think that
- 40:47Speaker 22: the way that he recruits players, it fits perfect to
- 40:51Speaker 22: what he's trying to do.
- 40:52Speaker 7: So, I mean, he really he has an amazing network.
- 40:54Speaker 7: I think everyone likes him.
- 40:56Speaker 22: But then I think when they get here, they're on
- 40:59Speaker 22: the same page pretty much instantaneously, And you can't say
- 41:02Speaker 22: that for a lot of other managers. I think a
- 41:04Speaker 22: lot of other people try and you know, go with
- 41:06Speaker 22: different agendas or try and playcate to the players, and
- 41:09Speaker 22: that can only last so long.
- 41:11Speaker 7: PJ is who he is, and he is very, very consistent.
- 41:14Speaker 22: He has been the same guy that I know him
- 41:16Speaker 22: since when we were in essentially a made up league
- 41:18Speaker 22: during COVID to Atlantic League and everything in between. So
- 41:23Speaker 22: he's you know, he's had tremendous success in this league.
- 41:25Speaker 22: He had great successes one year in the Frontier League.
- 41:28Speaker 22: Last year, I mean he made it to the playoffs.
- 41:29Speaker 22: Is for one and only year as a manager in
- 41:31Speaker 22: the Frontier League. So he really brings just a very
- 41:34Speaker 22: very confident aura to the entire to the entire place.
- 41:38Speaker 22: And you know, the other thing that I think I love,
- 41:40Speaker 22: and I think that our fans respect, is that he's
- 41:43Speaker 22: so even keeled that he doesn't go ballistic. He doesn't,
- 41:47Speaker 22: you know, try and do some corny prescripted I'm gonna
- 41:51Speaker 22: get tossed and hopefully someone gets it on John Boyd
- 41:53Speaker 22: Media or something like he is very, very professional. He's
- 41:56Speaker 22: just very even keeled, and that that trend to the
- 42:00Speaker 22: clubhouse and to the dugout tremendously.
- 42:03Speaker 4: Again, guys, the championship begins tomorrow night Go Ballpark six
- 42:07Speaker 4: thirty five, correct, and also Wednesday night, so you get
- 42:10Speaker 4: two here and then you'll go on the road after that.
- 42:12Speaker 4: How cool would it be if the Dirty Birds were
- 42:15Speaker 4: to win the championship? I mean we I mean, it's
- 42:18Speaker 4: it's something that I think the Charleston would really really
- 42:21Speaker 4: get all excited. But they've been excited all season with
- 42:23Speaker 4: this team.
- 42:24Speaker 22: Dave, I moved here five days before the Christmas Parade
- 42:27Speaker 22: in twenty twenty two and we went to that and
- 42:29Speaker 22: I've been thinking about it since then of having the
- 42:32Speaker 22: trophy at that parade. So I think it would be
- 42:35Speaker 22: absolutely amazing. I think we've got a heck of a
- 42:37Speaker 22: great shot. And I love what we're doing, you know,
- 42:40Speaker 22: and everything with the twelve and undred for kids, twelve
- 42:43Speaker 22: and hundred free tickets, for just doing everything we can
- 42:46Speaker 22: to get the community engaged.
- 42:48Speaker 7: I think it's just it's really really exciting, and.
- 42:50Speaker 4: It's one of the great things I like about this
- 42:52Speaker 4: ownership group, Andy, is the fact that you folks do
- 42:54Speaker 4: give so much back to the community. I mean even
- 42:57Speaker 4: during the off season, you're out doing the stuff. Of
- 42:59Speaker 4: course we'll have the Slango Law light the night over
- 43:01Speaker 4: to Ballpark two. That's something that you don't necessarily have
- 43:04Speaker 4: to do, but you've agreed to do it again. It's
- 43:06Speaker 4: going to be bigger and better than ever. So even
- 43:08Speaker 4: though the players aren't around, then this ownership group is
- 43:11Speaker 4: really really involved in the community with things throughout the year.
- 43:14Speaker 4: It's very real to us.
- 43:15Speaker 22: And you know, the thing that was funny is that,
- 43:17Speaker 22: of course I was happy to be in Gastonia winning
- 43:19Speaker 22: the Southern Division Saturday, but we were the sponsor of
- 43:22Speaker 22: two different community events that day, so was bummed that
- 43:25Speaker 22: I wasn't personally here. But we had Dustier mascot there,
- 43:28Speaker 22: we had representation. So yes, it is as exciting and
- 43:32Speaker 22: as amazing it is on the field. I mean, we
- 43:34Speaker 22: want to be the best we can be three hundred
- 43:36Speaker 22: and sixty five days a year.
- 43:37Speaker 4: And the Jill remind folks where they could watch the
- 43:39Speaker 4: game if they can't make it to the ballpark.
- 43:41Speaker 9: If you can't make it to the ballpark, you can
- 43:42Speaker 9: go to Flow baseball dot com register there or get
- 43:45Speaker 9: your tickets at Dirty Birds Baseball dot com. And remember
- 43:48Speaker 9: this is their first Championship Series appearance since two thousand
- 43:51Speaker 9: and eight. We are going for our first league title
- 43:53Speaker 9: since nineteen.
- 43:54Speaker 4: Ninety nineteen ninety, Jill, I talked about you weren't born.
- 43:57Speaker 7: I was not born yet.
- 43:58Speaker 4: Were you born in nineteen ninetyen?
- 44:00Speaker 3: Maybe?
- 44:01Speaker 4: I certainly all right, I was in college at the time.
- 44:05Speaker 4: All right, guys, we'll see you at the ballpark tomorrow night.
- 44:07Speaker 4: And Jill, I guess I'm gonna have to have you
- 44:09Speaker 4: back tomorrow, right? Is that the way this is? Because
- 44:11Speaker 4: you or somebody will be here to talk about the
- 44:13Speaker 4: Dirty Birds tomorrow. Jill and Andy, I appreciate you guys

- 46:56Speaker 2: Well.

- 47:19Speaker 4: again for helping get the Kanawha County Public Safety radio
- 47:21Speaker 4: feedback online. Much appreciate it. I didn't do anything there.
- 47:24Speaker 4: All I did was basically when we started getting text
- 47:26Speaker 4: that it wasn't appearing on certain platforms. I just was
- 47:29Speaker 4: kind of the conduit between the Texter and Johnny Rutherford,
- 47:32Speaker 4: and apparently things seemed to be back up and operating
- 47:36Speaker 4: as they should, so I didn't really do anything. I
- 47:38Speaker 4: just kind of provided the provided the forum. I guess
- 47:41Speaker 4: we have spent a great deal of time over the
- 47:45Speaker 4: last few weeks, not only on this show but also
- 47:48Speaker 4: on other media outlets talking about the threats to schools
- 47:53Speaker 4: and this story from Friday that emerge is just a
- 47:56Speaker 4: little bit different and story and picks of the perp
- 47:59Speaker 4: are posted at wv metronews dot com courtesy of Aaron Parker.
- 48:03Speaker 4: So this dude named James Wilson, he was fifty years
- 48:06Speaker 4: old of Miami, the one here, not the one in Florida,
- 48:09Speaker 4: decided to go squirrel hunting next to Sharon Dawes Elementary
- 48:13Speaker 4: School in Cabin Creek. This all happened Friday. Maintenance workers
- 48:17Speaker 4: reported here in gunfire around seven forty five Friday morning,
- 48:21Speaker 4: seventeen shotgun shells were found on the roof of the school. Now,
- 48:26Speaker 4: apparently the guy thought it might be a good idea
- 48:28Speaker 4: to go hunting next to a grade school. Not so much.
- 48:32Speaker 4: He was arrested in charge with hunting without a license,
- 48:34Speaker 4: I legal possession of wildlife and negligent shooting. Kids got
- 48:39Speaker 4: the day off because of it, and mister Wilson became
- 48:41Speaker 4: a resident of South Central Regional Jail. And I was
- 48:43Speaker 4: thinking about this this morning, what a difference a few
- 48:47Speaker 4: decades makes, because again since my birthday, I can do this.
- 48:51Speaker 4: When I was young, but in all seriousness, growing up
- 48:55Speaker 4: in a rural area as I did, it was not
- 48:58Speaker 4: uncommon in when I was in elementary school of the
- 49:01Speaker 4: nineteen seventies for kids to bring guns to school have
- 49:05Speaker 4: them in their locker because their parents knew they were
- 49:08Speaker 4: going squirrel hunting or whatever after school. And we had
- 49:12Speaker 4: the lockers in the classrooms, and I can literally remember
- 49:16Speaker 4: watching kids bring guns to school and placing them in
- 49:20Speaker 4: the locker. You know, maybe it was a little bit different,
- 49:22Speaker 4: you know, back then, growing up in a rural area.
- 49:24Speaker 4: But you can't do that today for obvious reasons. I
- 49:26Speaker 4: get it, but it just kind of struck me, you know,
- 49:28Speaker 4: the contrast between what a difference that forty or so
- 49:32Speaker 4: years make, well, fifty years or so makes. Big Piggy
- 49:36Speaker 4: Wiggly hotline three zero four three four five fifty eight
- 49:38Speaker 4: fifty eight Toty the tailor text three zero four nine
- 49:41Speaker 4: three five five zero zero eight Texas Dave, let's talk
- 49:44Speaker 4: about important things the Cowboys coaching staff, front office and
- 49:47Speaker 4: owner needs changing. Well, I'll say this about my Cowboys.
- 49:50Speaker 4: You know, on our birthday weekend yesterday, they got down
- 49:54Speaker 4: to a large margin to Baltimore twenty eight to six,
- 49:57Speaker 4: and there in the fourth quarter they mounted a comeback. Unfortunately,
- 50:00Speaker 4: though the clock is undefeated, and had they had that
- 50:04Speaker 4: fire early on that they had toward the end of
- 50:06Speaker 4: the game. I mean Dak was just picking the Raven's
- 50:09Speaker 4: defensive part. Unfortunately he waited till there was five minutes
- 50:12Speaker 4: left in the game to start that, and the defense
- 50:14Speaker 4: for Dallas came alive too. So we got some problems
- 50:18Speaker 4: in Big d for sure. What about the I don't
- 50:19Speaker 4: want to turn it into a sports show. What about
- 50:21Speaker 4: the Reds firing David Bell their manager with five days
- 50:24Speaker 4: left in the season. I mean the Rads were officially
- 50:27Speaker 4: eliminated from the playoffs like last week or so, why
- 50:31Speaker 4: with five days left in the season do you walk
- 50:33Speaker 4: at this point? Jeff said this morning on the Morning
- 50:36Speaker 4: News could have been one of those things where they
- 50:38Speaker 4: said we're going to fire you at the end of
- 50:39Speaker 4: the season, and he said, you know what, I've already
- 50:41Speaker 4: started packing. I've already got my stuff out the door.
- 50:44Speaker 4: I don't know what happened there, but anyway, David Bell
- 50:46Speaker 4: is out in Cincinnati. So should Governor Jim Justice have
- 50:50Speaker 4: a debate against Glenn Elliott. Hoppy did a poll on
- 50:53Speaker 4: Twitter or ax now that said yes he should. Justice,
- 50:57Speaker 4: of course, the Republican nominee for Senate currently held by
- 51:00Speaker 4: Mansion Glenn Elliott, the Democrat nominee. Glenn was on the
- 51:04Speaker 4: show actually last week and I asked him about the debate,
- 51:07Speaker 4: and he again challenged Jim Justice, saying, and this was
- 51:11Speaker 4: actually funny, he said, and I'm kind of paraphrasing here.
- 51:14Speaker 4: He can even bring his dog if he wants, if
- 51:16Speaker 4: I can bring mine. Now, for his part, the governor
- 51:20Speaker 4: is saying no to a debate, and he says the
- 51:23Speaker 4: race is already over. And I'll be honest with you,
- 51:27Speaker 4: I'm not so sure the governor should debate Elliott. He's
- 51:30Speaker 4: already way ahead in the polls, and to be honest,
- 51:32Speaker 4: it's going to be darn near impossible for a Democrat
- 51:35Speaker 4: to win anything in this state. And that's not meant
- 51:38Speaker 4: as a disrespect toward Glenn Elliott, but it's just where
- 51:41Speaker 4: we are right now. And the same goes for Honeyton
- 51:44Speaker 4: Mayor Steve Williams and his battle for governor against a G.
- 51:48Speaker 4: Patrick Morrissey. Steve Williams taking a very interesting stance though
- 51:52Speaker 4: in both Hopey and I talked about this last week.
- 51:55Speaker 4: Steve Williams has come out in favor of recreational cannabis
- 51:59Speaker 4: and he'd like to have a foot on the ballot. Well,
- 52:02Speaker 4: the makeup of the legislator. Now that's not gonna happen,
- 52:04Speaker 4: but you can. My grandma used to say, Ryan, you
- 52:06Speaker 4: can want in one hand and you know what in
- 52:08Speaker 4: the other one. See which one gets filled up quicker.
- 52:10Speaker 4: It's uh, grandma logic, all right, gotta go. Thanks to
- 52:14Speaker 4: doctor Marty Roth, University of Charleston for being on the
- 52:16Speaker 4: show today, Andy and Jill from the Dirty Birds and
- 52:19Speaker 4: the Tory and Marjorie from the Kenag Garden Club as well.
- 52:23Speaker 4: Coming up tomorrow, we're gonna talk some home security with
- 52:26Speaker 4: Josh Bean from Jute. Also talking October West with Rick
