- 0:00Speaker 1: Dot Org The Cruise of the Noah's Ark by David Cory,
- 0:06Speaker 1: Chapter three, The Circus. The ark was ailing down the
- 0:10Speaker 1: bay upon the rushing tide, and the circus will commence
- 0:13Speaker 1: today with the animals safe inside. This is the song
- 0:17Speaker 1: the weathercock sang. Early the next morning, Marjorie rubbed her
- 0:21Speaker 1: eyes and then jumped out of bed and looked out
- 0:23Speaker 1: the window. Good morning, she said to the merry gilt rooster.
- 0:26Speaker 1: It's a fine day for the circus. That was a
- 0:29Speaker 1: pretty verse, she just sang. Did you just make it up? Oh? Yes,
- 0:32Speaker 1: said the weathercock proudly. Just couldn't help it. You know,
- 0:36Speaker 1: the circus doesn't come to town every day in the week.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Well after that, Marjorie hurried down to the breakfast table,
- 0:43Speaker 1: where she found mister Jonah seated with the rest of
- 0:45Speaker 1: the family. She had forgotten all about him, and so
- 0:49Speaker 1: did I. And maybe you have two for you. See,
- 0:52Speaker 1: mister Jonah hadn't been feeling very well and have remained
- 0:55Speaker 1: in his cabin since the day he'd left the whale.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It's certainly a relief to be once more at a
- 1:02Speaker 1: breakfast table, he said. Traveling inside a whale is like
- 1:06Speaker 1: sailing in a submarine, although a whale is supposed to
- 1:08Speaker 1: be neutral. Nevertheless, I was frightened to death for fear
- 1:11Speaker 1: we might be torpedoed. Yes, indeed, sighed Missus Noah, these
- 1:15Speaker 1: awful times. One isn't safe anywhere. That's right, exclaimed Captain Noah.
- 1:20Speaker 1: We must keep a sharp lookout. There's no telling how
- 1:23Speaker 1: soon we may be in the war zone, and I'm
- 1:26Speaker 1: responsible for the safety of all my passengers. And just
- 1:30Speaker 1: then the weathercock shouted something which sounded very much like periscope.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Well you can imagine how excited everybody was after that.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Where away, asked Captain Noah. Dead ahead, screamed the weathercock.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Instantly all eyes were turned in that direction. Some distance
- 1:48Speaker 1: ahead stretched a long, smooth, sandy beach, on which was
- 1:52Speaker 1: a huge billboard with the words Parry's slope, Bah, exclaimed
- 1:58Speaker 1: Captain Noah. Perry's slope isn't periscope. Well, I'm glad it isn't.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Are we going ashore? Asked mister Jonah. Looks like it,
- 2:06Speaker 1: answered Captain Noah. The arc is pointed for the beach.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Hope we don't bump too hard. Some of the animals
- 2:12Speaker 1: might get hurt. The arc was going at a fast clip,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and as they neared the shore, everyone clung tightly to
- 2:18Speaker 1: the railing hold Fast, shouted the weathercock. As the bow
- 2:21Speaker 1: touched the beach. In another minute, the arcs skimmed gracefully
- 2:25Speaker 1: over the sand with as much ease as it had
- 2:27Speaker 1: sailed upon the ocean. Wonderful boat, you have, exclaimed mister Jonah,
- 2:32Speaker 1: looking at Captain Noah ought to be proud of her.
- 2:34Speaker 1: She's a dandy. Before the latter had time to reply,
- 2:38Speaker 1: the Arc stopped and everyone rushed towards the gangplank. Let
- 2:42Speaker 1: it down, easy, commanded Captain Noah. Easy there, Why the
- 2:46Speaker 1: ARC's on wheels, cried Marjorie as she stepped on the
- 2:49Speaker 1: sandy beach, regular automobile wheels. Well, I declare, exclaimed Missus Noah.
- 2:54Speaker 1: So it is. Let's call it the arcmobile, suggested Ham.
- 3:00Speaker 1: What's the thing? Said Shem. Don't you think so? Father?
- 3:03Speaker 1: Captain Noah did not reply for a moment, for he
- 3:06Speaker 1: was busily engaged inspecting the bottom of the Ark. I
- 3:10Speaker 1: was looking to see if it were built to run
- 3:11Speaker 1: on the land, he replied, or whether it just went
- 3:14Speaker 1: this far on account of its momentum. What's that noise?
- 3:17Speaker 1: Asked Jpeth. Sounds like the engine of an automobile, answered Shem.
- 3:22Speaker 1: It's coming from the Ark, cried Ham. Captain Noah hurriedly
- 3:25Speaker 1: went below. Presently he returned, smiling with satisfaction. There's a
- 3:30Speaker 1: regular automobile engine in the hold way aft, he said,
- 3:33Speaker 1: and it's connected with a shaft so that we'll turn
- 3:36Speaker 1: the wheels. We'll have no difficulty in traveling on land.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Hoorah for the Arcmobile, shouted Han. On land or on sea,
- 3:44Speaker 1: wherever we may be. The Arkmobile is the thing for me,
- 3:48Speaker 1: saying Marjorie. Skipping about on the sand, over sand, overfaam,
- 3:52Speaker 1: wherever we may roam, the Arcmobile will carry us home,
- 3:56Speaker 1: sang the weathercock, and then he said, I guess I'll
- 3:59Speaker 1: come down from the flagpole if you're going to camp here.
- 4:02Speaker 1: If you're not, I'll stay where I am, for it's
- 4:04Speaker 1: a pretty good climb, and I'm not much of a
- 4:06Speaker 1: sailor as of yet. Let's stay here and have the circus,
- 4:10Speaker 1: said Ham. We can make a splendid ring in the sand.
- 4:13Speaker 1: In fact, we can have three rings if we want to.
- 4:17Speaker 1: All we have to do, you know, is to throw
- 4:19Speaker 1: up the sand in a circle. Everyone agreed that it
- 4:22Speaker 1: was an ideal spot, so the boys set to work
- 4:25Speaker 1: at once. Miss Noah made Marjorie a wonderful dress covered
- 4:28Speaker 1: with gold spangles. I'm going to ride the big white horse,
- 4:33Speaker 1: just like a circus rider, cried Marjorie. And I shall
- 4:36Speaker 1: stand up on the saddle and jump through my hoop.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Ham can hold it, of course I will, he cried,
- 4:41Speaker 1: looking up from his work. And I'll be jolly glad
- 4:44Speaker 1: when this ring is finished. I had no idea it
- 4:46Speaker 1: would take so long. Hoorrah, Mine's finished, cried j Peth.
- 4:50Speaker 1: And so is mine, shouted Sham. Well, I think mine's
- 4:54Speaker 1: the biggest of all, said Ham. It must be, or
- 4:56Speaker 1: i'd have finished when you fellows. Did father to put
- 5:00Speaker 1: on his dress? Suit, said Shen, and snap the whip
- 5:03Speaker 1: when Marjorie rides around the ring, you know, just the
- 5:05Speaker 1: way they do in a real circus. Great Scott, exclaimed
- 5:09Speaker 1: Captain Noah, overhearing the remark, as he descended the gangplank.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I didn't bargain for this, but I suppose I might
- 5:16Speaker 1: as well put it on, and he turned back into
- 5:19Speaker 1: the ark. The sound of hammering at the moment reached them.
- 5:23Speaker 1: What's going on? Ask cam let's see, suggested shem. But
- 5:27Speaker 1: before they reached the gangplank, mister Jonah appeared on His
- 5:31Speaker 1: legs were strapped a pair of stilts, which made him
- 5:34Speaker 1: at least eight feet high. I'm gonna be the giant,
- 5:38Speaker 1: he said with a laugh, bumping down the gangplank in
- 5:41Speaker 1: a clumsy manner. I say, Missus Noah, could you sow
- 5:44Speaker 1: the legs of an old pair of trousers onto mine
- 5:47Speaker 1: so the stilts won't show. Of course I can't, replied
- 5:50Speaker 1: Missus Noah, bursting into laughter. But I'm afraid they won't match.
- 5:55Speaker 1: In due course of time, Marjorie's circus dress was finished
- 5:58Speaker 1: and the giant's trousers length, the upper part being blue,
- 6:02Speaker 1: the lower part being gray, but perfectly satisfactory to the wear.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Everyone was now waiting impatiently for Captain Noah, when suddenly
- 6:11Speaker 1: his head appeared at one of the portholes. Mother, he called,
- 6:15Speaker 1: where are my white dressed ties? I can't find them anywhere,
- 6:19Speaker 1: So Missus Noah laid down her work basket and went
- 6:21Speaker 1: into the ark to find them, and in a few
- 6:24Speaker 1: minutes Captain Noah appeared in full dress, his silk hat
- 6:28Speaker 1: upon his head and a long whip in his hand.
- 6:31Speaker 1: As he came down the plank. J Peth led the
- 6:34Speaker 1: big white horse, and after helping Marjorie to mount, led
- 6:38Speaker 1: him to the center ring. Shem then opened the big
- 6:41Speaker 1: door in the ark, and all the animals solemnly marched
- 6:44Speaker 1: out and arranged themselves around the rings. Next came Ham
- 6:48Speaker 1: leading his two wrestling monkeys, and after him came Shen
- 6:52Speaker 1: with his elephant. Mister Jonah, towering above the heads of
- 6:55Speaker 1: the tallest animals, including the giraffe, announced that the circus
- 6:59Speaker 1: would commence, ladies and gentlemen. He began, allow me to
- 7:03Speaker 1: introduce you to the most wonderful child rider in the world,
- 7:07Speaker 1: Marjorie Hall on her beautiful white horse, Marshmallow. Marjorie, without
- 7:14Speaker 1: doubt is the most daring bareback rider in the universe.
- 7:18Speaker 1: There was a great clapping of hands, hoofs, and palls
- 7:21Speaker 1: at this announcement, for she had become a great favorite
- 7:24Speaker 1: with the Noah's Arc people. Ladies and gentlemen, went on,
- 7:28Speaker 1: mister Noah, you see before you in ring number two
- 7:31Speaker 1: the most famous wrestlers of the world, Jocko and Manco
- 7:36Speaker 1: in ring number three, is the largest elephant in existence,
- 7:40Speaker 1: while all this was going on, the Noah boys had
- 7:43Speaker 1: run into the ark. Presently they returned dressed up as clowns.
- 7:48Speaker 1: And then the fun commenced. Ham held up a hoop
- 7:51Speaker 1: which he had carefully covered with tissue paper, and to
- 7:54Speaker 1: Missus Noah's amazement, Marjorie leaped through it as if she
- 7:57Speaker 1: had been a circus bareback rider all her life. The
- 8:01Speaker 1: boys performed marvelous feats of tumbling and jumping, and were
- 8:05Speaker 1: so funny that half the animals nearly split their sides
- 8:08Speaker 1: with laughing. The laughing hyena had to be carried into
- 8:12Speaker 1: the ark and put to bed, for fear she would
- 8:14Speaker 1: laugh herself to death. Well, well, exclaimed Missus Noah, when
- 8:18Speaker 1: it was all over, I certainly never enjoyed the circus
- 8:21Speaker 1: so much in all my life, not even when I
- 8:24Speaker 1: was a little girl. And that night everyone slept like
- 8:27Speaker 1: a top, let me tell you, for each one was
- 8:30Speaker 1: tired out with the day's work. Even the weathercock, I think,
- 8:34Speaker 1: tucked his head under his gilt wings and snored. End
- 8:38Speaker 1: of Chapter three. The Circus
