- 3:08People often look for defects, frailty, and faults in others,
- 3:13and don't even notice their own mistakes, even when those mistakes are equal
- 3:18to or more serious than the ones they are pointing out.
- 3:22Join us in this podcast of Woman at the Well Ministries as Kim Miller takes
- 3:27us on a journey through the scriptures, painting a vivid picture from John 8.
- 3:32The town gathered to stone a woman caught in sin, yet everyone present was guilty of their own sins.
- 3:40One by one, they left as Jesus convicted them of their actions.
- 3:45Then there was one who acknowledged her sins, and Jesus said,
- 3:50Woman, where are those thine accusers?
- 3:53Hath no man condemned thee?
- 3:55Neither do I condemn thee. Go and sin no more.
- 3:59Hello, and welcome to this podcast of Woman at the Well Ministries,
- 4:03and And what an absolute blessing it is to just know the forgiveness of God.
- 4:08Each of us who call ourselves Christians have been forgiven.
- 4:13And the interesting thing about it is, is that we all do come to Jesus like
- 4:18the woman at the well did in John chapter 4.
- 4:21We all need him just as much as
- 4:23she did. Whether you were saved at five or whether you were saved at 55.
- 4:29Whether you lived a life that was moral or whether you lived a life that was
- 4:35socially unacceptable and very immoral.
- 4:38It takes just as much blood to cleanse you from your sins as it does the other one.
- 4:46The woman at the well didn't require more cleansing than I did.
- 4:51And I was saved at five. And the Lord is pretty clear about this,
- 4:56but no more so than in John chapter 8.
- 5:00It's a familiar account where a woman who's caught in adultery is brought to
- 5:09the city square to be ridiculed, punished, and killed.
- 5:14But an interesting thing happens when the King of kings and the Lord of lords encounters her.
- 5:22The only one who could judge has chosen not to.
- 5:28Turn in your Bibles to John chapter 8 and let us pray as we read God's word.
- 5:35Lord, we ask that you would just enter into this message.
- 5:41We pray, Lord, that you would open up our hearts and our minds and that we would
- 5:45speak only what you would have us to speak, that you would remove me from the message.
- 5:51That you would allow me to be your messenger, that hearts would be turned and
- 5:56lives would be changed, not because of me, but because they've encountered you through this message.
- 6:04Lord, we love you, we praise you, and we thank you. And in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
- 6:11Beginning in verse 1 of John chapter 8, it goes like this.
- 6:16Jesus went into the Mount of Olives, and early in the morning he came again into the temple.
- 6:21And all the people came unto him, and he sat down and taught them.
- 6:26And the scribes and the Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery.
- 6:30And when they had set her in the midst, they say unto the hymn master this woman
- 6:37was taken in adultery in the very act now moses and the law commanded us that
- 6:43such should be stone but what say is that now i want you to just look at the context of this,
- 6:51jesus is on the mount of olives it's early in the morning he's in the temple
- 6:57and he's teaching the people.
- 7:01Jesus is the teacher for the hour.
- 7:04But these scribes and these Pharisees, they come upon him, bringing with them
- 7:11a woman who was caught in the act of adultery.
- 7:15And they begin to educate Jesus when they say,
- 7:22Now, Moses in the wall commanded us that this woman should be stopped.
- 7:31As if Jesus didn't know what Moses had commanded him.
- 7:39As if Jesus needed to follow Moses.
- 7:45Not how it works. but sometimes
- 7:49we can become so legalistic we
- 7:53can become so hard-nosed though there's
- 7:57no love of god in us and there is no room to circumnavigate the scriptures that's
- 8:03not what i'm saying i'm saying that jesus christ loves you and i'm saying that
- 8:11god is love and i'm saying that love covers a multitude of sins.
- 8:17And sometimes when we are bringing someone to someone else for correction, it isn't to help them.
- 8:26It is to punish them. And you need to check just where your motive lies.
- 8:33We don't need a bunch of gossipers in the family of God. We don't need a bunch
- 8:39of scorekeepers in the family of God.
- 8:42Jesus said that our sins are forgiven and they are cast as far as the east is from the west.
- 8:50As a result of this, we don't need a scorekeeper.
- 8:55We are all as filthy rags. Our works are as filthy rags.
- 9:00We are all unclean in need of a savior.
- 9:03We don't even have an opportunity, if we are basing it on our own merit, to be in the game.
- 9:10But Jesus comes on the scene, and he says, I love you.
- 9:15He who knew no sin became sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
- 9:21The one and only, sinless, perfect Lamb of God doesn't choose to punish those
- 9:29who will ask for forgiveness and receive his free gift of salvation,
- 9:34but instead doesn't choose to punish those,
- 9:37He offers a pardon. And in the scene, we see two very different attitudes.
- 9:44My mom always had a saying, if I got a little too sassy or a little too harsh with my words.
- 9:50And it was simply this.
- 9:52Where's the love of God in that? See, because she understood that God speaks
- 9:59with love, that God corrects in love,
- 10:02that God wants only what is best for us, that God wishes that none should perish,
- 10:06but that all should come to repentance.
- 10:09That when God is showing discipline, it is for the very reason to give you the
- 10:17abundant life he came that you might have, according to John 10.10.
- 10:22His motive is always to bless you.
- 10:26Everything that happens in your life, according to Romans 8,
- 10:2928, and 29, is for your good and his glory, because he works out all things
- 10:35for the good to them that but love the Lord, to them that are called according to his purpose.
- 10:40And friends, we have been called to spread the gospel, going into all the world
- 10:44to preach and teach the gospel.
- 10:46That's not just for preachers with titles, teachers with titles.
- 10:52Missionaries, leaders in the church.
- 10:55That's for every born-again, blood-bought child of the Most High God.
- 11:00But these scribes and Pharisees, they were all about it.
- 11:04They had some kind of religious title people looked up towards them and they
- 11:11were so caught up in themselves that in front of them was the king of kings
- 11:17and the lord of lords and instead of listening and learning at his feet they
- 11:21were trying to educate him on the law of moses.
- 11:25As the account goes on, he says in verse 6, This they said, tempting him,
- 11:30that they might have to accuse him.
- 11:33But Jesus stooped down and with his finger wrote on the ground,
- 11:38as though he heard them not.
- 11:40So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself and said unto them,
- 11:45He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
- 11:50And again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it,
- 11:54being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one,
- 11:59beginning at the eldest, even unto the last.
- 12:01And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
- 12:06Oh, the one-on-one time with Jesus. It changes everything.
- 12:11When Jesus had lifted up himself and saw none but the woman,
- 12:15he said unto her, Woman, where are those unaccusers?
- 12:20Hath no man condemned thee?
- 12:22She said, No, man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee. Go and sin no more.
- 12:30Verse 12 is where we're going to park for a minute before we pick up this account in John chapter 8.
- 12:38In verse 12, it says, Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying,
- 12:42I am the light of the world.
- 12:44He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
- 12:51Now, if you were to speak to these scribes and Pharisees, I promise you they
- 12:55believe they have the light of life.
- 12:58I promise you that they believe they're not walking in darkness.
- 13:02But again, I submit to you, what is their motive?
- 13:06Is it to help the woman? Is it to bring the woman closer to a relationship with Jesus?
- 13:12To get her to change her sinful wickedness? No!
- 13:17If she sinned, she did wrong. She deserves to be punished. What are you going to do now, Jesus?
- 13:24That's their attitude. And you know, we can be pretty self-righteous.
- 13:29And for many of us, we might come across that way.
- 13:33You know, the person who shows up in church sitting in your seat with tattoos and piercings.
- 13:40Or maybe it's the person who's ashamed sitting in the bath because they don't
- 13:45have running water and so they can't clean themselves up.
- 13:51Oh, we look clean when we come to church. But I submit to you that many of us
- 13:57are like the scribes and the Pharisees.
- 13:59And we're dirtier than the ones who don't have any water to wash their outsides.
- 14:06Because we have seen the King of Kings. We have known the Lord of Lords. We have walked with him.
- 14:13He is our heavenly father. We are his child and our insides are dirty,
- 14:17not because he didn't clean them, but because we just keep putting the world inside of us.
- 14:23We are filling ourselves with everything but the love of God.
- 14:27We're filling ourselves with everything but the word of God.
- 14:30We are feasting on the pleasures of this world instead of the bread of life.
- 14:35The scribes and the pharisees they had
- 14:38a lot to say but jesus says again
- 14:41i am the light of the world he that
- 14:45follows me shall not walk in darkness but shall have a light of life what does
- 14:50it mean to walk in darkness i don't think it means that you go around after
- 14:55dark when the dust of dawn lights are on you know scripture says that men that
- 15:01love darkness rather than light their deeds are evil.
- 15:04I don't have a lot for hanging out in the dark, but oh, how I love the light.
- 15:10You can introduce a match into a football stadium that is completely dark.
- 15:16And no matter where that match is, you'll see that little flicker of light because
- 15:19light dispels darkness.
- 15:22And he is the light. And he says that we are the light because he puts his light in us.
- 15:27In fact, in Matthew chapter 5 verse 16 he says let your light so shine before
- 15:31men that they may see your good works and glorify your father which is in heaven.
- 15:36What does it mean to walk in darkness? It means to not follow Christ.
- 15:41But let's take a look at what it means to walk in the light, to not walk in darkness.
- 15:48We follow Christ's commandments.
- 15:50The steps of a good and righteous man are directed and established by the Lord,
- 15:55and he delights in his way, and he blesses his path.
- 15:59When we are walking in the light, But as he is the light, we are following after him.
- 16:08His commandments, they aren't hard for us.
- 16:11They aren't grievous for us to follow because we love him. And he said,
- 16:16if you love him, you will keep my commandments.
- 16:20Walking in the light means we follow Christ's example.
- 16:25These scribes and these Pharisees who are bringing this woman to the Lord.
- 16:32Are not following his example. As we pick up this account.
- 16:37In verse 6. We see that they. Are tempting him.
- 16:43But what you see is that Jesus. Stoops down.
- 16:47Now scripture doesn't. Tell us. What he's writing.
- 16:52But there's one thing. That it does say. It does say that he's writing.
- 16:57And there's another very interesting thing.
- 17:01It says. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself and said unto
- 17:07them, he that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
- 17:11And again, he stooped down and wrote on the ground. And then it says,
- 17:16and they which heard it. People are watching.
- 17:20People are listening.
- 17:22People have a vested interest sometimes in watching you fail.
- 17:29Sometimes it's in learning from you.
- 17:33Question to you is how are you looking at others
- 17:36are you looking at them hoping they'll
- 17:39fail watching waiting to see them to make a mistake
- 17:42or are you encouraging them to succeed are you
- 17:45supporting them are you helping them there are two people in the two kinds of
- 17:49people in this world the ones with the love of god who are trying to assist
- 17:54and help and love at all costs because love is sacrificial and love gives and
- 17:59then there are those that are like the scribes and the Pharisees that are just keeping score,
- 18:04watching to see if you're winning and losing,
- 18:08if you're good or bad, judging on every turn.
- 18:12Here's a question for you. Is there enough evidence in your day-to-day life
- 18:19to convict you of being a Christian?
- 18:21Do those who walk behind you, those who work with you, those who live with you,
- 18:28and those who live around you, know that you are a Christian.
- 18:33Not by your words, as much as by your actions.
- 18:37Are you a new creature in Christ Jesus?
- 18:41Have your old ways passed away, and now you are living solely and wholly for
- 18:46Jesus Christ? People are watching.
- 18:49It was more than just the scribes and Pharisees.
- 18:53It was more than it wasn't one scribe and one Pharisee.
- 18:57Now they were in the public place and they were watching. What is going to happen
- 19:01to this woman who was caught in adultery that they're bringing up to be punished?
- 19:06People were watching. And you may be the only Bible some people ever read.
- 19:11And you better be sure that you're living it the way he says it.
- 19:15And I'm telling you, these scribes and Pharisees, that's not what he said.
- 19:19He said we are to love one another as he has loved us.
- 19:23And oh, how he's forgiving and oh, how he's loving and oh, how he has turned our bad into good.
- 19:31Scribes and Pharisees, they're coming to watch her be punished,
- 19:35to watch her be killed. It's the irony of sin.
- 19:39It's when something seems one way, but it isn't.
- 19:43In verse 35 of John 13, he says, By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples,
- 19:50if ye have loved one to another.
- 19:53So the scribes and the Pharisees would have described themselves as amazing Christians.
- 20:01They thought they were the top of the line. They're probably seeing how they
- 20:05tried to educate God, thought that maybe Jesus could take some pointers from them.
- 20:11But the reality of it is, they were doing anything but following Christ's example.
- 20:18How's your day-to-day life? On Sunday and Wednesday, if you're one that goes
- 20:23twice a week, you might be a fantastic Christian.
- 20:27Or at least you look it. But what happens on Monday and Tuesday and Thursday
- 20:32and Friday and Saturday?
- 20:34You know, maybe you have that sweet, sweet voice.
- 20:38We used to call the church voice from a person in my neighborhood.
- 20:42We went to church with them and they sounded completely different at church
- 20:46than they did in their yard.
- 20:49I always thought it was funny because it certainly wasn't the acoustics.
- 20:55Church as the setting goes butter with
- 20:57the melt in their mouth but you couldn't find an
- 21:00ounce of love and kindness and encouragement and goodness and
- 21:04god help you if your football went in their yard it's kind of a scribe and pharisee
- 21:09moment the only person you're fooling is yourself the people around you know
- 21:13it and god certainly does but as we begin to look more closely at this account,
- 21:23we see that there's an incongruency between the Pharisees' actions and their own lives.
- 21:34Scripture doesn't tell us what he writes in the ground.
- 21:38It just says that he stoops down with his finger and he writes on the ground
- 21:43as though he didn't even hear the scribes and Pharisees.
- 21:46But they keep asking so he
- 21:50lifts himself up and he says he
- 21:53that is without sin let him cast the
- 21:55first stone and then he stooped down and he starts writing again i have an idea
- 22:03in my heart and mind what he wrote i don't feel that it was useless words I
- 22:11believe that as the crowd was gathered around him,
- 22:14he began to write their sins.
- 22:18Common sins, probably such as lying. You know, the white lie or the deceit or
- 22:25just tell part of the story.
- 22:27Ten commandments says thou shalt not lie. And anything that is deceitful is
- 22:31a lie. Anything that is not true is a lie.
- 22:34Or maybe he wrote stealing.
- 22:38Now, I highly doubt that any of you, within the sound of my voice,
- 22:41would walk into a store and stick a candy bar in your pocket.
- 22:45But what about when you file your income taxes?
- 22:49And the deductions? The home office that you're living in?
- 22:54The rules that are there and you just stretch the boundaries?
- 23:01About when the cashier accidentally gives you a 20 instead of a one somehow
- 23:08it's stuck together and you notice it but you just walk out finders keepers
- 23:12losers weepers what about when you just,
- 23:17steal the joy right out of somebody's soul because you crushed their dream or you're just so jealous,
- 23:27of what they have or who they are, that you're doing everything you can to cause them trouble.
- 23:33And then perhaps you just are like the scribes and the Pharisees, and they wrote judging.
- 23:39He who knew no sin is getting ready to pardon this woman, because every one
- 23:46of them there were guilty of their own sins.
- 23:50And they which heard it, being convicted of their own conscience,
- 23:54went out one by one, the oldest to the youngest.
- 24:00And then there was Jesus and the woman.
- 24:05I don't know what sins are in your life. I know what are in mine.
- 24:10And I know, he says, when I confess him, he forgives me.
- 24:13Do you know that hate is the same as murder?
- 24:17If you hate your brother, whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer.
- 24:22And you know that no Who murdereth hath eternal life?
- 24:26What about that friend that made a mistake and you just can't forgive?
- 24:32He says, for if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
- 24:37But if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive you yours.
- 24:43We so forget who we are. We are frail humans. We are fleshly.
- 24:49We have errors.
- 24:51We forget it. all because we saw somebody else make a sin, somebody else make a mistake.
- 24:59And so somehow we feel better, so we just slam every bit of accusation we have upon them.
- 25:06But no one there could pick up a stone and throw it because no one there was without sin.
- 25:13Yet they were sure trying to
- 25:15pick the sins of everybody else until Jesus started writing in the sand.
- 25:21What's he writing in the sand for you right now Those were all sins of commission
- 25:26Things that you did Things that you commit.
- 25:30Only those were the only ones. Many of us can keep our little selves clean,
- 25:35and we work hard to look good.
- 25:38If you're a person working hard to look good, not for the right reason,
- 25:43but just so you look good, and I don't mean exercise, which is fantastic for
- 25:48you to keep your body in shape, but let me remind you that the Bible says bodily
- 25:53exercise profit a little,
- 25:55but we all need to do it.
- 25:59That's just a comparison to what it means to really exercise your faith,
- 26:04to exercise your relationship with Christ.
- 26:08These sins of omission, like not praying, he tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5,
- 26:1417, that we are to pray without ceasing.
- 26:17An attitude of prayer is one that is in the center of God's will,
- 26:21one who has not got hidden sins in their life, one who is seeking Him,
- 26:26who is going after Him, who is living their life with the purpose of pleasing
- 26:31Him and spreading the gospel,
- 26:33one who is proud to be a member of the family of God, one that seeks to be used wherever, He says.
- 26:42Is that in your sand? Because you just don't have communication with God?
- 26:47How about the sin of not studying the Word?
- 26:522 Timothy 2.15 says that we are the study to show ourself approved unto God,
- 26:56a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
- 27:01We've got to know what the word of God says. How can you claim his promises if you don't know them?
- 27:08We've got to know how to apply his word properly to every situation.
- 27:13Maybe it's just obedience. Scripture tells us that obedience is better than sacrifice.
- 27:21He wants to know that you love him with your whole heart, your mind,
- 27:26your soul, and your entire being.
- 27:28That he is one. He says, thou shalt have no other gods before me.
- 27:32That daily you'll take up your
- 27:34cross and you'll deny yourself and you will follow him wherever he leads.
- 27:40See as we go further when it's just him and the woman, just the two of them.
- 27:48That's how personal God is.
- 27:50He says in Revelations 3.20 that, Behold, I stand at the door and knock.
- 27:55If any man will open the door, I will enter in and I will sup with him and he
- 27:59with me. He'll fellowship.
- 28:02He's knocking at your heart's door. He wants to be number one in your life.
- 28:06He wants to be the most important thing in your life.
- 28:09He wants prominence over all things in your world.
- 28:14He never leaves you nor forsakes you, and he's right there in front of you.
- 28:18And for this woman, he asks a question.
- 28:23Woman, where are those thine accusers? Hath no man condemned thee?
- 28:29The only one that could judge did. He forgave.
- 28:36Yet we put ourselves like the scribes and Pharisees so many times in the place of judge.
- 28:43We judge whether it was good or bad. We judge whether they're holy or unholy.
- 28:48We judge whether they taught well or they didn't teach well.
- 28:51We judge whether they preach well, whether they don't preach well.
- 28:54We judge whether they sang well, whether they didn't sing well.
- 28:57We don't usually say, what an amazing gift they have given to get up and to
- 29:05give their talent to the Lord.
- 29:07That's not what we say. We say, man, she sings well.
- 29:13Yeah, so does a lot of people who are singing for Jesus.
- 29:16I think we're going to be pretty shocked when we get to the other side and we hear like he hears.
- 29:25Now, it could be that when we get the new road, we get new vocal cords,
- 29:28I don't know. But I guarantee you everybody there sounds wonderful.
- 29:32The sound of praise is melodic, regardless of the sequence of notes.
- 29:41Habits, the praise of his people. And there is nothing sweeter,
- 29:46nothing more beautiful than living in the presence of God.
- 29:52See, love covers it all.
- 29:54Love covers a multitude of sins, and what you see right here in this passage
- 30:02of Scripture is the demonstration of God's love.
- 30:06We read in scripture, Master, which is the great commandment in the law.
- 30:13Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and
- 30:18with all thy soul and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.
- 30:24And the second is likened to it.
- 30:28Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang the law and the prophets.
- 30:37Matthew 22, 36-40.
- 30:41Loving the Lord with your entire being and loving others as yourself is the foundation of it all.
- 30:52So she answers and she said, no man, Lord. She calls him Lord.
- 30:57See what happens in this process? she calls him lord i don't think when they
- 31:04brought her to him she called him lord because it says,
- 31:11that he stooped down and he wrote she was just there but in the presence of
- 31:20him watching his forgiveness, watching his judgment,
- 31:24watching how he dealt with her, changed her.
- 31:31That one-on-one moment with her and Jesus changes everything.
- 31:36Because 1 Peter 4 says, love covers a multitude of sins.
- 31:44At all and jesus loves perfectly and jesus loves each of us in a way that only
- 31:52he can and if you love me you'll keep my commandments those sins of omission
- 32:00those sins of commission,
- 32:02they'll dissipate out of your life when you love him and you won't be like the
- 32:08scribes and the Pharisees because you'll realize what he's brought you from.
- 32:13You'll realize his daily forgiveness and his daily cleansing.
- 32:17You'll realize how he equips you, how he helps you, how he assists you,
- 32:22how he loves you, how he blesses you, how he uses you if you love him. Do you love him?
- 32:30The Pharisees were right. The law of Moses said, she should be stoned to death.
- 32:39But the love of Jesus said, neither do I condemn thee.
- 32:44Go and sin no more.
- 32:48Friends, it is better to do right than to be right.
- 32:54It is better to do right than to be right.
- 32:58You don't have to win the argument, but you do have to show the love of God.
- 33:04You don't have to walk away the victor but you do have to walk away the one
- 33:12that encouraged, that showed kindness, that showed love. Do you love him?
- 33:19For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever
- 33:25believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.
- 33:30Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.
- 33:34He who knew no sin did not condemn, but he forgave.
- 33:41You are his ambassadors.
- 33:43You've been charged to love as he loves, to follow his example,
- 33:48and to keep his commandments.
- 33:51I ask you again, is there enough evidence to convict you in the court of law
- 33:57of the accusation you are a Christian.
- 34:01Remember you are loved. Jesus loves you.
