- 0:09the Kansas City Athletics faced the Minnesota
- 0:10Twins at Metropolitan Stadium in Minneapolis
- 0:13for the opening day of the 1966 season. The A's
- 0:16were managed by Al Dark, who was in his first
- 0:18game as skipper of the team. Dark had previously
- 0:21led the Giants to four consecutive winning seasons,
- 0:23including an NL pennant as manager from 1961
- 0:26to 64. The Twins, managed by Sam Mell in his
- 0:30seventh year, were coming off a 102 -win season
- 0:33and an AL pennant in 1965, although they lost
- 0:36to the Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series.
- 0:39This audio recording is from the Kansas City
- 0:41Radio broadcast, featuring announcers Monty Moore
- 0:44and Lynn Ferris. Two years, Tony Oliva. Tony
- 0:50batted 321 to win the batting championship in
- 0:54a close down to the last week race with Carl
- 0:57Jastrzemski, the newly elected... Team captain
- 1:01of the Boston Red Sox. Tony Oliva, left -handed
- 1:07batter, and quite a player he is. Tony won the
- 1:12American League batting championship in his very
- 1:14first year in the big leagues as a rookie. Nobody
- 1:22down in the first inning. No score. He's a bitch.
- 1:24There's a drive to center field. Jose Charneval
- 1:26moving after the ball, and he has got it. That
- 1:29retires the Twins. So on the first inning for
- 1:34Minnesota, no runs, hits or errors. Nobody left
- 1:36on after one full inning of play. It's the A's
- 1:38nothing, the Twins nothing. Hi, fans. This is
- 1:44Lynn Ferris. It's a red -letter day. Today marking

- 2:29Grand 15373. GFC Loan Company. Four offices in
- 2:33Kansas. One is located in Overland Park and one
- 2:36in Mission in the Mission Shopping Center. Leading
- 2:46off with the Athletics, in the top half of the
- 2:47second inning, the A's catcher Bill Bryant. Manny
- 2:52Jimenez, whom we mentioned a little while ago,
- 2:54has not come to financial terms with the Athletics
- 2:57front office, is sitting with A's owner Charlie
- 2:59Finley in a box seat. Charlie has made him an
- 3:02offer, and... Manny says I have to think it over,
- 3:06so Jimenez is not in uniform today in the most
- 3:08startling development of opening day of 1966.
- 3:12Here's the pitch to Bryant. Sharp breaking curve
- 3:15is inside a low ball one. Bill Bryant, who will
- 3:19be playing behind the plate and at first base
- 3:21for the Athletics this year, is catching today.
- 3:26Bill has really hit the ball solidly all spring.
- 3:29The pitch. pop -up on the left side of the infield.
- 3:33The shortstop, Versailles, is calling for the
- 3:35ball. Now Val Espino runs him off coming in towards
- 3:37the infield and Sandy makes the catch. One away.
- 3:42With Versailles going out and Val Espino coming
- 3:44in and both owning tremendous speed, they're
- 3:47going to cover a lot of ground out of that area
- 3:49this year. One down in the second, here is the
- 3:54A's first baseman, Ken Harrelson, who led the
- 3:55Athletics in home runs and runs batted in last
- 3:58year. Ken had five home runs to lead the A's
- 4:01in home runs this spring. The pitch doing. Fastball,
- 4:04strike, it's called. Veteran American League
- 4:08umpire and one of the best ball and strike umpires
- 4:10in pro baseball, Larry Knapp, is working behind
- 4:12the plate this afternoon. Here's the best curveball
- 4:16pitches outside. and Hunter, we are seeing two
- 4:23of the fastest working pitchers in the American
- 4:25League this afternoon. They're fast for several
- 4:28reasons. They like to get the ball and throw
- 4:30it, and they also usually throw strikes pretty
- 4:33consistently. There's a curve fouled off. One
- 4:37ball, two strikes. Fielding the ball over in
- 4:39foul territory, the A's third base coach, Luke
- 4:41Epling, who was our pregame warm -up show guest
- 4:43today. Luke would like to have $100 for every
- 4:47professional season opener he's ever seen. Played
- 4:51with the White Sox 20 years. Here's a one -and
- 4:53-two pitch. Curveball to Harrelson. Misses low.
- 4:55It's two -and -two now. Well, it's been a long,
- 4:59hard grind since the late part of February for
- 5:02these baseball players in spring training. They
- 5:06took it fairly slowly and finished fast and are
- 5:10in top shape. Here's a pitch. Curve. Strike three
- 5:12is called. Harrelson goes down. Another two away
- 5:16is Mudcat Grant. Just broke off a major league
- 5:20curveball over the outside corner. Here's left
- 5:23-handed swinging Larry Stahl, the A's left fielder,
- 5:26who has made one great play already. With the
- 5:31big league season underway and not yet an inning
- 5:34and a half old, we have already seen two spectacular
- 5:37defensive plays. Larry Stahl has pretty good
- 5:41power. Here's the pitch. Low and away ball one.
- 5:43He has hit seven big league home runs. Five of
- 5:45them have been hit against the Minnesota Twins.
- 5:48He has played very little in the big leagues,
- 5:50so his home run production is really an outstanding
- 5:53thing. Here's a pitch, curve ball high. Two balls
- 5:56and a strike. The Athletics will open their 1966
- 6:06season at home at Municipal Stadium next Tuesday
- 6:09night against these same twins. Here's a 2 -0
- 6:12pitch. Low and a wave all three. On deck for
- 6:15Kansas City, Dick Green. Three balls, one strike.
- 6:33Grant got a late start. In spring training, he
- 6:36was a holdout. He and Kyle Griffith really had
- 6:38a battle on their hands before they came together.
- 6:41On contract terms, 3 -1 pitch. Stahl hits it
- 6:44up in the air down the third baseline. Foul territory.
- 6:47Harmon Killebrew runs Luke Affleck out of the
- 6:49coaching box and makes the catch. And that retires
- 6:52the Appotics here in the second inning of play.
- 6:55Let's get Grant. has mowed down the first six
- 6:58Kansas City batters after an inning and a half.
- 6:59The score, the A's nothing, the Twins nothing.
- 7:05Well, let's check in on scores of other games.
- 7:08In the American League, after three innings of
- 7:10play, the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees,
- 7:13no score. That's Mickey Lulich dueling Whitey
- 7:15Ford. Boston Red Sox have taken a 3 -2 lead over
- 7:19Baltimore after three full innings. Barber versus
- 7:21Wilson. Brooks Robinson homered in the first,
- 7:23nobody on. The California Angels and Chicago
- 7:26White Sox scoreless after one. That's Dean Chance
- 7:29versus Tommy John. In case you missed it yesterday,
- 7:32Cleveland Indians, using their pitch -hitting
- 7:34strike off the bench, beat Washington Senators
- 7:375 -2. McDowell over Pete Rickard. Frank Howard
- 7:41hit his first homer of the year. In the National
- 7:44League, the Mets and Cincinnati already have
- 7:46been rained out for the second day in a row.
- 7:48Nothing in yet on the Cubs, San Francisco, Pittsburgh,
- 7:51Atlanta, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Houston
- 7:54and Los Angeles. All will be playing tonight.
- 7:57So one rain out and three night games. Here's
- 8:06Harmon Killebrew to lead off now for the Minnesota
- 8:08Twins. Harmon had quite a year last year. He
- 8:10had 269. 125 home runs, knocked in 75 runs. He's
- 8:16a right -handed batter. Jimmy Hunter throws a
- 8:20fastball right by a swinging Killebrew strike
- 8:22one. Well, there's no excitement, I don't think,
- 8:28outside of maybe the World Series or the All
- 8:30-Star Game, like opening day of the baseball
- 8:32season every year. Here's the 0 -1 bet. Hunter
- 8:36tries a fastball again, and he bets it inside,
- 8:38trying to jam Harmon. It's one ball and one strike.
- 8:45Mencher and Hall are scheduled for the Twins
- 8:47here in the second. No score in our game. Hunter's
- 8:51pitch. Inside. Ball two. He has thrown three
- 8:54straight fastballs to Killebrew. Going to really
- 9:01take a blast to hit a home run into the left
- 9:03field seats here today. Here's the bench. Curve.
- 9:07Over the plate with Lowe. Ball three. Hunter
- 9:11and Bryant. is the coach at third for the twins,
- 9:16and Bob Lemon at first. Hatter gets the side
- 9:22from Bryant. Swings into action. Here's the bench.
- 9:25Curveball bounced on the ground to the left side,
- 9:27causing a shortstop hazard. There's his throw
- 9:29to Harrelson in the dirt, but Kenny digs it out,
- 9:31and there's one away. The batter now is Don Mincher,
- 9:37who hit 251 for the twins last year with 22 home
- 9:40runs. Big Don knocks in 65 runs. His emergence
- 9:47as a consistent hitter against both right and
- 9:50left -handed pitching allows the Twins to move
- 9:53Killebrew off first and put him at third base.
- 9:57Here's a pitch. High and outside, ball one. Boy,
- 10:04it's great to see those Major League scoreboards
- 10:05again all lit up indicating scores of other games
- 10:08around the country. and just in general to get
- 10:13the baseball season underway, here's the bench
- 10:15outside Ball 2. Lynn and I will be traveling
- 10:19right with the athletics through 162 games starting
- 10:22today, broadcasting every day on the same radio
- 10:25station throughout Mid -America, and we're so
- 10:27happy that you've decided to join us today. Be
- 10:30sure to let all your friends know the stations
- 10:32that are carrying the A's games and to which
- 10:34you are listening. We'll have a lot of fun this
- 10:36summer. Here's the 2 -0 pitch. Curveball. Double
- 10:49for Don Venture. So Don Venture hits a drive
- 11:04between Carnival and Hershberger in right center
- 11:06field for a two -base hit, the first hit of the
- 11:091966 season. And now here's Jimmy Hall, who hit
- 11:13two... .285 for average last year for the Twins.
- 11:16Jimmy had 20 homers, knocked in 86 runs. He had
- 11:18a great year. The A's infield swung around a
- 11:26bit to the right. Tarnable playing over in right
- 11:28center field from his regular center field spot.
- 11:31Hunter's pitch on the way. Outside. Ball one.
- 11:49at second base. One out. Last half of the second
- 11:51inning. No score between the A's and the Twins.
- 11:54Hunter pitches. A strike on the outside corner.
- 11:58One ball and one strike. The wind is definitely
- 12:00a factor in this game today. It has already made
- 12:02some easy plays rather tough. The wind blew that
- 12:07ball away from Tarnable just then as he chased
- 12:09it into right center field. Mentor hit it hard.
- 12:12There's no doubt about it, but Tarnable was being
- 12:15hindered by that wind. Here's a pitch. Way out
- 12:19to that ball, too. The same two teams play right
- 12:27here again tomorrow afternoon, and pitching for
- 12:29Kansas City will be Raleigh Sheldon and pitching
- 12:31for the Twins, Camilo Pascual. Our airtime for
- 12:36our baseball warm -up show, 115 on many of these
- 12:39same stations, and for the broadcast itself,
- 12:41125. Hunters 2 -1 pitch coming. Hunter, who is
- 12:49basically a control -type pitcher, has been at
- 12:52the 3 -1 level on two different batters here
- 12:54in the setting. Killebrew, who went for a curveball
- 12:57on 3 -1 and crowded out. And out of Jimmy Hall.
- 13:09Bryant calls for a pitch. Hunter acknowledges.
- 13:12He walks in to all four. in a second inning.
- 13:20And that plays to the plate. Earl Batty, right
- 13:23-handed batting catcher who hit just short of
- 13:25300 last year. Earl hit 297, and I'll tell you,
- 13:30it's a big 297 when Batty hits it because of
- 13:32this. He is very slow, possibly one of the slowest
- 13:36runners in the American League, which means he
- 13:38doesn't get many infield hits during the course
- 13:39of the year. Earl has to hit that ball between
- 13:43fielders and infielders. Mighty fine player.
- 13:47This guy knocked in 60 runs last year. Hunter
- 13:50pitches. Fastball hit on the ground to Wayne
- 13:52Cozy. He's got it down the green for one out.
- 13:54Over to first base. An easy double play and that
- 13:56retires the side. Fanny. An easy double play,
- 14:00Mark, if he hits the ball on the ground with
- 14:01anybody else on. In the second inning. No runs.
- 14:07One hit. No errors. One man left on base. After
- 14:11two innings at the Met Stadium in the Twin Cities
- 14:13to score, Kansas City nothing, Minnesota nothing.
- 14:17Now, KCMO Confidential. 60 seconds inside a great
- 14:25radio station. It's 5 a .m. at KCMO Radio. A
- 14:29slight figure hunched against the morning breeze
- 14:31enters the front door. In the background, the
- 14:34faint screams of flattened struts. Splendid old
- 14:37special can be heard as the all -night milk dickie
- 14:39show fades slowly into limbo. The studio door.
- 14:43A brief gaze at the material is plunged carefully
- 14:46under the chair. A coat draped over what appears
- 14:49to be an empty, gluttonous handlebar. A body
- 14:52slumps into the chair with a sigh. And suddenly...
- 14:56Good morning, world! The day takes on a bright
- 14:58new sheen on the Jack Elliott Show. Five hours
- 15:01of fun and fun. Special features of the Jack
- 15:03Elliott Show include agri -news, sports, weather,
- 15:05and the important news. 981 PCMO for Jack Elliott.
- 15:10This has been KCMO Confidential. 60 seconds inside
- 15:15a great radio station. Kansas City Athletics
- 15:24to lead off the third inning. Here's Dick Green,
- 15:26the second baseman. He'll be followed by Ed Charles
- 15:28and the pitcher, Jimmy Hunter. Green last year
- 15:32for Kansas City batted .232. He hit 15 home runs,
- 15:35knocked in 55 runs. Grant pitches. Green takes
- 15:40a look at a strike. It cost him. The ball's one
- 15:44strike. We're underway in the third inning of
- 15:46the first game of the 1966 season. In the fourth
- 15:55inning, Boston leads Baltimore 3 -2. The Yankees
- 15:57and Detroit scoreless in the fourth. Bouncing
- 15:59ball hit by Green to Armand Killebrew. The Twins'
- 16:02third baseman throws him out. Went away. Mudcat
- 16:06Grant, who did not get his first start for the
- 16:09Twins last season until three weeks into the
- 16:11season, is the opening day pitcher here in 1966.
- 16:15And he feels that he won 21 games last year,
- 16:18not starting until three weeks after the season
- 16:20got underway. This should give him about three
- 16:23or four extra starts, and he might be a 25 -game
- 16:25winner this year. Here's a pitch to Charles.
- 16:29And the A's third baseman takes a curve outside.
- 16:31Ball one. The California Angels and the Chicago
- 16:35White Sox playing today in Chicago. No score
- 16:38in the third inning. The bench. Again, a curve
- 16:43ball misses outside. Kansas City nothing, Minnesota
- 16:49nothing. One out, third inning. Today at the
- 16:55Big Cats, one newspaper bill this day. The pitch.
- 16:58High fly ball. Hits behind the plate. Earl Batty
- 17:01coming back. May have a play on it right in front
- 17:03of the screen. It hits on the screen, protecting
- 17:06the stand behind the plate. So Ed Charles is
- 17:09still alive. The count, two balls and one strike.
- 17:15Yes, the papers were saying it's a battle between
- 17:17cats. Mudcat. And Catfish. And to continue along
- 17:23the veins of nicknames, Mudcat Grant has a brother
- 17:26by the name of Swampfire Grant, who used to be
- 17:28a pitcher. Do one pitch. Knocks him down, ball
- 17:31three. Good to see some colorful names back in
- 17:37baseball for a while. Baseball became a little
- 17:40bit staid in that respect. As you and I were
- 17:44growing up, most of us used to remember quite
- 17:46well the nicknames. Here's a bit. Charles takes
- 17:48it inside and high in the eighth half there.
- 17:50First baserunner of the afternoon. As Ed Charles
- 17:52works Mudcat Grant for a walk. The eighth pitcher,
- 17:57Jimmy Hunter, comes up. Quite a story this young
- 18:04fella has given the baseball world. Baseball
- 18:11scouts had given up on him because part of his
- 18:13foot had been shot off. Here's the pitch. He
- 18:15busts it right out in front of the plate. It
- 18:17kicks off foul to the first base side. Hunter
- 18:25still to this day has quite a few fuck shots
- 18:27in his foot despite an operation that removed
- 18:31some 27 of them. That's the Mayo Clinic up here
- 18:36in Minnesota, by the way, right after he signed
- 18:37the contract with the Athletics. Charles leads
- 18:43off first. Here's the bench. He busts the ball
- 18:45hard out towards the mound, and it's bobbled
- 18:47momentarily by Grant. He hustles, picks it up,
- 18:49throws the first. He got his man on a flat, scrambling
- 18:52play. That Grant is quite an athlete. He went
- 18:57over to his left that time, trying to pick up
- 18:59a funny ball by Hunter. The ball bounced off
- 19:03his glove. He fell down, but scrambled it while
- 19:05still on his knees. Through the first base, to
- 19:08Bernie Allen's covering, and he got Hunter. But
- 19:11Ed Charles advances to second on the sacrifice,
- 19:13and back to the top of the A's order we go for
- 19:15Jose Tarnable. Base hit now could give the Athletics
- 19:23the lead in the ballgame, as Charles is at second
- 19:25base. Tarnable, skied out to right field his
- 19:28first trip. There's a curveball, bounced out
- 19:30towards first base. Fair territory, fielded by
- 19:32Mitchell, he steps on the bag, and the A's don't
- 19:34score this inning. No runs are hit, the man left
- 19:38on, and after two and a half innings, the score...
- 19:42Well, baseball in the air and on the air. What
- 19:49a treat it is for Monty and me to be here in
- 19:52the home of the 1965 American League champions.
- 19:55And fans, the important thing you want to remember
- 19:57is that we'll be facing this same ball club back
- 20:00at beautiful Municipal Stadium in Kansas City.
- 20:03And we hope you'll be with us in person, 7 o
- 20:06'clock starting time, April 19th. Why don't you
- 20:09get your tickets at the Plaza, 4628 Werno, Townhouse,
- 20:15Kansas City, Kansas, Macy's Downtown, the Blue
- 20:18Ridge Mall, Center Office, and the Caps Drug
- 20:22Stores, North Kansas City, 1914 Swift. And 75th
- 20:27and Metcalf. Now, both of those cash drugstores
- 20:30have tickets all day, every day, seven days a
- 20:34week. So get your tickets and be on hand with
- 20:36us and welcome the athletics back to Kansas City,
- 20:39won't you? Against these same twins. We start
- 20:50the last of the third inning. Bernie Allen, the
- 20:52Twins' second baseman who made a spectacular
- 20:53play robbing Wayne Causey of a base hit. Here's
- 20:56the leadoff banner against Jimmy Hunter. Here's
- 21:00the bench. Inside at half -all -one. Bernie last
- 21:04year was about ready to give up baseball. He
- 21:07had had a knee operation the year before. The
- 21:11Twins, after spring training, sent him to the
- 21:13minor leagues to Denver, and he decided to give
- 21:16up baseball. Here's the ball hit foul out of
- 21:19play. But the Twins front office talked him into
- 21:23staying in the game and playing for a while at
- 21:24Denver, seeing if he could get his knee into
- 21:26shape. He never did really get back in top shape
- 21:29last year. Bernie had a great year with the Twins,
- 21:32his rookie season in 1962. He hit .269 that year.
- 21:37The one -on -one bench, curveball, rips into
- 21:39the right field corner, a base hit. Herzberger
- 21:42chasing the ball and goes. Hands on here in the
- 22:15third inning. The pitcher, Grant, is at the plate
- 22:24now. He's looking for the bunt. Grant does not
- 22:29bunt. He hits the ball foul. Out of play. The
- 22:41Twins have had two base hits so far in the ballgame.
- 22:46Nobody down here in the third. The bench. There's
- 22:52the button. Down the first baseline and it stays
- 22:55right over the chalk line. Picked up by Harrelson.
- 22:57He tags his man out as he goes by. But Grant
- 23:00moves out and over to third base with only one
- 23:02away. Back to zone oversize. Both pitchers have
- 23:09been called upon to sacrifice runners down and
- 23:11they've both successfully done so. popped up
- 23:17to third base this first trip. And now we're
- 23:20getting a first look of the official 1966 season
- 23:24at the Kansas City Athletics. Defensive infield
- 23:28pulled in on the grass in the early innings to
- 23:30try to cut off a run. Al Dark plans to do this
- 23:32a lot. Hunter winding. Here's the pitch to Versailles.
- 23:36The curveball hit right back towards the mound.
- 23:38Hunter's got it. Holds the runner at third. Throws
- 23:40the first. He got it. What a curveball Hunter
- 23:42threw. Let's pause right here for station identification.
- 23:45This is the Kansas City A's baseball network.
- 23:48This is KCMO Radio Dial 81, Kansas City, Missouri.
- 23:52Currently 44 degrees with light rain and haze
- 23:55in Kansas City. Four minutes past two. At the
- 24:01Met Stadium in Minneapolis, St. Paul, this is
- 24:03Monty Moore with Lynn Ferris. Happy to have you
- 24:05join us today, and we hope that you'll make it
- 24:07a regular habit to keep your radio dial set right
- 24:09where it is throughout. The 1966 baseball season.
- 24:16Here's Sandy Valespino with two down. The infield
- 24:18can go back now, except for Ed Charles, the third
- 24:21baseman, who will play right about the line.
- 24:23An attempted bluff down the line by Bernie Allen
- 24:26as Hunter went into a full windup. And Hunter
- 24:31threw the ball and was fouled off. It looked
- 24:33for a moment as if Bernie Allen might be coming
- 24:35towards the plate. Ed Charles is over talking
- 24:38with Hunter now on the mound as Ed had tried
- 24:41to fluff the runner back into third base with
- 24:43a couple of slaps of the glove. Ernie has always
- 24:48been quite fast. I don't know if he's that fast
- 24:50that he could steal home with two down like this.
- 24:55Now the 0 -1 pitch. Hit the ball right by Ed
- 25:13Charles. It actually hit Charles' glove. As Charles
- 25:18made a dive to his right. So Val Despino gets
- 25:23credit for a base hit, a run batted in. The Twins
- 25:26lead 1 -0, 2 down, and here's Tony Oliva. The
- 25:42runner at first gets the lead. Ryder steps off
- 25:44the rubber and drives him back in. The Twins,
- 25:50defending American League champions, not being
- 25:54picked by many of the riders or broadcasters
- 25:56to repeat. There's a bench. Foul out of play.
- 25:59Strike one. But here in the Twin Cities area,
- 26:03all their broadcasters and riders think the Twins
- 26:06can do it again. And the Twins players do a man
- 26:11feel they have a better ball club this year than
- 26:13the club that won the pennant last year. We'll
- 26:18see lots of them in the next week or so. The
- 26:21throw to first. Val Espino is back in. Our first
- 26:2511 games of the 1966 season will be with the
- 26:28teams who finished first and second last year.
- 26:30The Twins and the White Sox. The A's have their
- 26:34work cut out for them. Pitch. Bounce right back
- 26:37to the mound on one hop. Hunter's got it. Throw.
- 26:39the first and down go the twins. In the third
- 26:44inning, one run, two hits, one big error, and
- 26:49one left on. After three innings of play at the
- 26:52Met Stadium, the score, Minnesota 1, Kansas City
- 26:55nothing. For complete sound and communications

- 27:54a division of KCMO Broadcasting. The leadoff
- 27:59batter for the Athletics in the top half of the
- 28:01fourth inning, Mike Hershberger, who grounded
- 28:02out to the first base with his first trap. Grant
- 28:06starts him off with a ball in the dirt. One ball
- 28:09and 0 strikes the count. Well, Cleveland and
- 28:12Washington got the baseball season underway yesterday,
- 28:15and the Indians rallied for four runs in the
- 28:17ninth inning to beat Washington 5 -2. Batting
- 28:21heroes of that game yesterday, Calavito had three
- 28:23hits for the Indians. Ball two to Hershberger.
- 28:27Max Alves had three hits. And Sam McDowell was
- 28:32the winning pitcher in that game. He led the
- 28:34American League in strikeouts last year and started
- 28:35off pretty strongly again this year. by striking
- 28:39out nine yesterday. And Lynn has a note here
- 28:42on that Baltimore -Boston ball game about the
- 28:45Robinson guys. To steal a phrase from Batman,
- 28:49Marty, the Robinson dynamic duo has struck. Brooks
- 28:52homered in the first, nobody on. And Frank Robinson
- 28:56has just homered in the fifth, nobody on. Those
- 29:00guys are going to score lots of runs this year,
- 29:02Baltimore. They're being picked by a lot of people.
- 29:05It's ball three to Mike Hershberger. Frank Robinson,
- 29:14a great new star in the American League. Long
- 29:17time, great in the National League. Here's a
- 29:20pitch. Strike to Hershberger, 3 -1. Mike was
- 29:23taking all the way. Three balls, one strike count.
- 29:29The Twins 1 -0. Hershberger gets back into the
- 29:38plate. Ball hit deep in the right center field.
- 29:44Way back goes Tony Oliva. He's at the fence.
- 29:46He can't get it. It's off the fence. Hershberger
- 29:48on the way to second. He's digging around second,
- 29:50going to third. Here comes a throw across the
- 29:52infield, and Hershberger is in there with a triple.
- 29:57Tony Oliva crashed hard into the fence in right
- 30:00field. He got up off the ground, chased the carom,
- 30:06and made a strong throw all the way to third
- 30:08base. But Hershberger is in there. the year for
- 30:12the Kansas City Athletics. And here's Wayne Causey.
- 30:25The Twins center fielder Jimmy Hall was just
- 30:28over talking with Oliva, and their manager Sam
- 30:31Neely stood up on the top step of the dugout
- 30:33to find out if Tony O were okay, and he is. So
- 30:37we'll continue now. The Twins in field will play
- 30:39halfway. They will not come in. The early innings
- 30:42to try to cut off the tying run. Here's the pitch
- 30:44to cause it. Foul ball. It's out of play. The
- 30:48Twins, of course, have all the mashers. They
- 30:51can hit the long ball. They're expected to score
- 30:53a lot of runs. Alvin Dark thinks it's foolish
- 30:55for a club that he doesn't think will score a
- 30:56lot of runs this year to give up runs easily
- 30:59in the early innings, which has long been something
- 31:02that many of us have wondered about. to Causey.
- 31:08One ball and one strike. So many times you'll
- 31:12see a club early in the innings when a runner
- 31:14gets a third base do as the twins are doing.
- 31:16Back up, of course, they're trying to cut off
- 31:18what could be a big inning and they'll give up
- 31:20the one run. 1 -1 fetch. Causey takes it high.
- 31:23Ball two. And Hershberger might be bothering
- 31:24Mudcat Grant a little bit with a mad dash about
- 31:2740 feet down the foul line as Grant goes into
- 31:31the windup. Wayne Causey. In a number of years,
- 31:37played with the Kansas City A's, the veteran
- 31:39of the ball club. 2 -1 pitch. Grab ball hit out
- 31:43towards the shortstop. Versailles picks it up.
- 31:45Holds Hershberger at third and throws it out.
- 31:47So Causey is out at first base, and Hershberger
- 31:50did have to hold on because the ball was hit
- 31:52to the left side of the infield. Though their
- 31:56infield was playing, not shallow, they were not
- 31:58playing too deep either, and of course Versailles
- 32:00has that great arm. Now here's Bill Bryant. a
- 32:08fly ball to the shortstop his first trip. Went
- 32:13leading 1 -0. The A's have Hershberger at third.
- 32:17Brad Wise pitches to Bryan inside and high. He
- 32:20really cut that one loose. Ball one. Mudcat Grant
- 32:39gets the sign from Batty. Throws. Bryant looks
- 32:41at a strike over the outside corner. One ball
- 32:43and one strike. A well -placed pitch by Mudcat
- 32:46Grant. Joe Pepitone has just hit a home run for
- 32:51the New York Yankees in the fifth inning with
- 32:52nobody on. So the score there is at least the
- 32:56Yankees 1 and the Tigers nothing. Pitch to Bryant.
- 33:06sideline, I think, and a rather surprising one,
- 33:08I think, within the last couple of days developed
- 33:10in the Yankee camp when Mickey Mantle announced
- 33:12as the Yankees broke spring training camp that
- 33:14he was going to be the starting center fielder
- 33:17for the Yankees. He said, I'm ready after his
- 33:19operation, and he is in the starting lineup for
- 33:21the Yankees today. Fetch to Bryant, way outside,
- 33:23ball three. And Grant is obviously trying to
- 33:27keep that ball away from Bill Bryant's pulling
- 33:29car. Wind is a favoring wind for a left -handed
- 33:35batter today. If Bryant could get one up into
- 33:39the air, it could carry deep enough in right
- 33:41field easily to knock in Hershberger from third.
- 33:453 -1 pitch. Changeup. Bryant swings a miss and
- 33:49he had a good kind of a changeup. A mighty fine
- 33:51pitch for Mudcat Grant. He threw a straight change
- 33:55off his fastball when Bryant had to be looking
- 33:57for a fastball right now. Now Mudcat Grant really
- 34:04needs a strikeout. Bryant digs in. Here's the
- 34:08pitch. Bounce ball out to the first base side.
- 34:11That's going to knock in Hershberger. Bryant
- 34:12is out as Mincher steps on the bag at first.
- 34:15But the ball game is all tied up at one and one.
- 34:17And Bill Bryant gets a run batted in. So Bill
- 34:22hung in there against Mudcat Grant. And knocked
- 34:25in the run. Here's Ken Harrelson who was called
- 34:29out on strikes his first trip to the plate. the
- 34:33fourth inning of this ball game between the A's
- 34:36and the Twins. Last year we had a lot of great
- 34:37games with Minnesota. The pitch to Harrelson,
- 34:41a snap curveball. A little high ball one. The
- 34:50Twins, who won the championship last year, only
- 34:53beat the A's ten times. We beat them eight times.
- 34:56So we played the pennant winners pretty closely
- 34:59last year. Here's one offense. Inside to the
- 35:05Hawks. Ball two. The A's under new manager Al
- 35:13Dark. A highly spirited group as they left spring
- 35:16training with 14 victories this year. Two offense.
- 35:20Curveball to Harrelson is high. Ball three. Larry
- 35:27Stahl on deck. There are two down here in the
- 35:29fourth. And the A's return home next Tuesday.
- 35:31Tuesday night to play these same Minnesota Twins.
- 35:33Game time, 7 o 'clock. Debbie Bryant, Miss America,
- 35:37will be there to throw out the first ball for
- 35:39the A's. Three -0 pitch. Ground ball hit in the
- 35:48hole between third and short. Cut off nicely
- 35:49by Killebrew. Great play. Throws him out. In
- 35:57the fourth inning, the A's get one run. One hit.
- 36:03In the middle of the fourth, the score, the A's
- 36:05won and the Twins won. Opening day for the 1966
- 36:10baseball season. A day filled with all the excitement
- 36:13and pageantry that is baseball. For our Kansas
- 36:15City A's, it isn't quite the same as opening
- 36:17day at Municipal Stadium, but nonetheless, it
- 36:19is the first game. And in addition to those of
- 36:22you listening to this broadcast presented by
- 36:24Ham's Beer, there are plenty of A's fans right
- 36:27here at Metropolitan Stadium. It is fitting that
- 36:30this first game is played here because Met Stadium
- 36:32is in the heart of the land of Sky Blue Waters
- 36:35because today's game and every A's game is brought
- 36:38to you by Ham's Beer, brewed in the land of Sky
- 36:41Blue Waters. From waters best for brewing, lots
- 36:44of fans across the country call Ham's the baseball
- 36:47beer. Ham's also presents the play -by -play
- 36:49of all Minnesota Twins games. On the West Coast,
- 36:52San Francisco fans gather around bottles of Ham's
- 36:54to follow the action of all the Giants games.
- 36:57Ham's is the baseball beer, but the reason you
- 36:59should try Ham's is because you'll like Ham's.
- 37:01It refreshes you best. Mighty fine words, Len
- 37:07Farris, and certainly that's true. We are right
- 37:09here in the heart of America, where the Ham's
- 37:15Beer Main Brewery is located. Just a few miles
- 37:18from the ballpark. Ready to go now with Harmon
- 37:21Killebrew. Last half of the fourth inning. Harmon
- 37:24grounded out Dwayne Causey. His first trip to
- 37:26the plate. Jimmy Catfish Hunter throws a fastball.
- 37:29Swinging track one. He threw his sinker that
- 37:31time. Jimmy holds his fastball differently when
- 37:35he wants it to sail and when he wants it to sink.
- 37:36He can turn that ball over when he wishes to.
- 37:41Here's the old one bench. Outside. One ball,
- 37:44one strike. The A's won and the Twins won. There's
- 38:00the curve to Killebrew and it's fouled off. Strike
- 38:02two. Tomorrow, Raleigh Sheldon will pitch for
- 38:09Kansas City and on Thursday against the Twins,
- 38:11Brett Talbot. Camilo Pascual tomorrow for the
- 38:14Twins and Jim Cotton on Thursday. Andrew hits
- 38:20a sharp ground ball to Wayne Causey. Wayne throws
- 38:23him out. One away in the fourth inning. Here's
- 38:29Don Mincher, who doubled his first trip to the
- 38:30plate. The A's have some new ticket locations
- 38:34this year and certainly some very well -placed
- 38:39ticket locations for the convenience of our fans
- 38:41all around the greater Kansas City area. We'll
- 38:43give you the locations where you can buy tickets
- 38:45to all future Kansas City A's games. One of our
- 38:52new ticket offices is on the Blue Ridge Mall,
- 38:54the center office number 55. Out in the Independence
- 38:57area, here's a fit to venture. Fastball tails
- 39:01off away from him, ball one. The A's have a ticket
- 39:07outlet in the Cat's Drugstore in North Kansas
- 39:08City at 1914 Swift Avenue. Open regular hours.
- 39:13You can buy A's tickets there almost any hour.
- 39:15Here's a fit. Outside, ball two. Another catch
- 39:20drugstore with a great big A's ticket -selling
- 39:22sign out on their billboard. 75th and Metcalf.
- 39:26More of the people in the Johnson County area.
- 39:32Here are the two old vets. Metcher takes a whack
- 39:35at it and hits it up into the air behind the
- 39:36shortstop position. The wind is bringing it back
- 39:38out of the dirt part of the infield, and Causey
- 39:40stays right with it to make the catch. So there
- 39:46are two out in the fourth, and here's Jimmy Hall.
- 39:50The Athletics have a ticket office in downtown
- 39:52Kansas City. If you happen to be in that area,
- 39:54we'd like to buy tickets for opening night next
- 39:56Tuesday at Macy's. And out in Kansas City, Kansas
- 40:00at the Townhouse Hotel. And the Plaza ticket
- 40:03office at 4628 Warnall Road. As well as the ticket
- 40:07office at the stadium. Oh, it's a fly ball. Foul
- 40:10territory. Here are the A's dugout. Ed Charles,
- 40:13A's third baseman over there. He's got it. And
- 40:15the signage retired in order here in the fourth
- 40:17inning of the ballgame. So the Twins don't score,
- 40:20and it remains the same. Kansas City 1, Minnesota
- 40:241. Well, Monty, let's once again check in on
- 40:30our A scoreboard. In the American League, after
- 40:33five innings, the New York Yankees lead the Detroit
- 40:35Tigers 1 -0 on Joe Pepitone's home run at Ford
- 40:38against Lulich. Baltimore and Boston now after
- 40:41six is tied up. 3 -3. Barber versus Wilson. The
- 40:45Robinson boys have struck. Brooks in the first
- 40:47with nobody on. Frank hitting a fifth inning
- 40:49homer. No, no. California -Chicago. No score
- 40:52after three and a half. Chance fueling John.
- 40:55Yesterday, Cleveland bested Washington 5 -2.
- 40:59McDowell over Rickert, Frank Howard a home run.
- 41:01In the National League, there's only one game
- 41:03that will be played this afternoon. The Cubs
- 41:05in San Francisco, Brolio versus Marichal, Houston,
- 41:08Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, and Philadelphia,
- 41:11St. Louis, all will play tonight. Jack Fisher
- 41:14and Milt Pappas will have to wait another day.
- 41:16The Mets in Cincinnati have been rained out for
- 41:18the second time now, and it's the first time
- 41:21since the year 1913 Cincinnati has been rained
- 41:23out. for the athletics here in the fifth inning
- 41:32of the ballgame. If you'd like to know more about
- 41:37Larry Stahl, a rookie with the A's this year,
- 41:39and all the other Kansas City A's players, a
- 41:41reminder that the A's yearbook is off the presses
- 41:43now, and fans who have ordered these books by
- 41:46mail should be receiving them this week. Here's
- 41:48a pitch to Larry Stahl, and it's a strike from
- 41:50Mudcat Draft. If you fans have not ordered as
- 41:54yet, do so soon by sending your check or money
- 41:56order for 75 cents to yearbook, Kansas City A's
- 41:59Municipal Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri. Dark
- 42:03breaking curveball, swung on and missed by Stahl.
- 42:05No balls, two strikes. That yearbook this year
- 42:09is a dandy. Got some new features in it that
- 42:13you've never seen in an A's yearbook before,
- 42:15plus lots of pictures of the A's players and
- 42:19families, complete backgrounds of all the Kansas
- 42:21City players. The 0 -2 pitch, wasted outside
- 42:25ball one. Fifth inning on a beautiful day in
- 42:33Minnesota. I say beautiful, it's clear, it is
- 42:35cold. The high is forecast 50 degrees. 1 -2 pitch,
- 42:41curve. High ball two. The A's worked out here
- 42:46in Minnesota yesterday in temperature 42 degrees.
- 42:54They had a short batting practice. Two -two pitch.
- 43:00Larry hits a drive to right field. Right straight
- 43:03at Tony Oliva, who makes the grab. One away.
- 43:11A's second baseman Dick Green comes up now. Twins
- 43:221 and the Athletics 1. Twins flying the pennant
- 43:28of the American League champions. Green at the
- 43:30sharp ground ball past third base. Foul. Strike
- 43:34one. American League President Joe Cronin is
- 43:41here today. He was here to help with the pennant
- 43:45raising ceremonies. Somewhere in the neighborhood
- 43:51of 20 ,000 fans. The Twins have never had a crowd
- 43:56opening the season of over 24 ,000. Of course.
- 43:59And it will be played this afternoon. The Cubs
- 44:01in San Francisco, Brolio versus Marichal, Houston,
- 44:05Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, and Philadelphia,
- 44:08St. Louis, all will play tonight. Jack Fisher
- 44:10and Milk Pappas will have to wait another day.
- 44:13The Mets in Cincinnati have been rained off for
- 44:15the second time now, and it's the first time
- 44:17since the year 1913 Cincinnati has been rained
- 44:20off. leads off for the Athletics here in the
- 44:28fifth inning of the ballgame. If you'd like to
- 44:32know more about Larry Stahl, a rookie with the
- 44:35A's this year, and all the other Kansas City
- 44:36A's players, a reminder that the A's yearbook
- 44:39is off the presses now, and fans who have ordered
- 44:41these books by Mayo should be receiving them
- 44:43this week. Here's a pic to Larry Stahl, and it's
- 44:46a strike from Mudcat Grass. If you fans have
- 44:49not ordered as yet, do so soon by sending your
- 44:52check or money order for 75 cents to yearbook.
- 44:55Kansas City A's Municipal Stadium, Kansas City,
- 44:57Missouri. Sharp, breaking curveball, one run
- 45:00and missed by Stahl. No balls, two strikes. That
- 45:04yearbook this year is a dandy. It's got some
- 45:09new features in it that you've never seen in
- 45:10an A's yearbook before, plus lots of pictures
- 45:13of the A's players and families, complete backgrounds
- 45:17of all the Kansas City players. The 0 -2 pitch,
- 45:21wasted outside ball one. It's a beautiful day
- 45:29in Minnesota. I say beautiful, it's clear. It
- 45:31is cold. The high is forecast 50 degrees. One
- 45:36-two pitch, curve high, ball two. The A's worked
- 45:41out here in Minnesota yesterday in temperature
- 45:4542 degrees. They had a short batting practice.
- 45:54Two -two pitch. Larry hits a drive to right field.
- 45:58Right straight at Tony Oliva, who makes the grab.
- 46:02One away. A second baseman, Dick Green, comes
- 46:08up now. Wins one and the Athletics won. Twins
- 46:23flying the pennant of the American League champions.
- 46:26Green hits a sharp ground ball past third base.
- 46:29Foul. Strike one. American League President Joe
- 46:37Cronin is here today. He was here to help with
- 46:40the pennant raising ceremonies. Somewhere in
- 46:46the neighborhood of 20 ,000 fans. The Twins have
- 46:50never had a crowd opening the season of over
- 46:5324 ,000. Of course, that's highly attributable
- 46:56to the bad weather they ordinarily have up here
- 46:58this time of year. Before the year's over, they'll
- 47:00make up for what they don't have on opening day.
- 47:03One strike pitch to Green, shortened up on the
- 47:05bat, faked a bun, and took it outside. One and
- 47:07one now. We're certainly highly encouraged about
- 47:14the great ticket sale we had in Kansas City for
- 47:16our athletics, and the A's will be coming home
- 47:18to start a series against the Twins and another
- 47:20against the White Sox next Tuesday night. 1 -1
- 47:25pitch. Fly ball hit on the infield to the right
- 47:28side. First baseman Don Metcher calling for it
- 47:31as it comes down about five feet from first base.
- 47:33Two away. And that brings to the plate third
- 47:38baseman Ed Charles. The Athletics have had only
- 47:41one base hit. Got tripled by Hershberger in the
- 47:45fourth inning. He was knocked in by Bill Bryant
- 47:48who grounded out the first base. The Twins have
- 47:51had only three hits, so the pitchers have taken
- 47:53over here this afternoon. Here's a pitch. Charles
- 47:57hits one high up into the air in a short right
- 47:59center field. Tony Oliva calling for it. Having
- 48:02to move to his left now. He's got it. So the
- 48:05first half of the ball game is over. And the
- 48:08score in the middle of the fifth inning. The
- 48:11age one and the twins one. And now, fans, just
- 48:14for a moment, why don't you close your eyes and
- 48:16wrap your hand around a cold hams beer and bend
- 48:19an ear to this. Listen. The land of sky blue
- 48:26waters is calling. From the land of sky blue
- 48:30waters comes the water best for brewing hams
- 48:36beer, refreshing hams beer. The beer that's brewed
- 48:39with water best. Tastes best, refreshes you best.
- 48:44Only Ham's has that refreshing sky blue waters
- 48:47flavor. Every Ham's has it. Glass after glass
- 48:51after glass. The one right beer for those who
- 48:55want another. Ham's tastes so right, it bears
- 48:58repeating. the first ball game of the 1966 season,
- 49:25and the guy is going to give you lots of pleasure
- 49:26doing lots of home stretches this year, our new
- 49:28baseball broadcasting partner, a mighty fine
- 49:30fellow from down in New Orleans recently, Chicago
- 49:32originally, but let's turn him loose right now.
- 49:34Here's Len Ferris. Thank you very much, Monty.
- 49:37Hello again, everybody. Earl Fatty will lead
- 49:39off. I guess my cat, our cat fish hunter, takes
- 49:42a ball. I knew we were going to get those fish
- 49:44mixed up. Press making quite a bit of a fish
- 49:48element here. Catfish versus Mudcat. Batty has
- 49:51been up one time and hit into the only double
- 49:53play in the game. Next pitch. Smashing the ground
- 49:55in a hole. Foggy backhand and he's going to have
- 49:58a long throw. He got him. What a scoop out of
- 50:01the dirt by our first -place win, Haroldson.
- 50:05Because he made an outstanding play. And it was
- 50:10a tough one from the well. And in fairness to
- 50:13the Twins, perhaps a faster man. But the outs
- 50:22always look good, don't they? One gone. Ernie
- 50:25Allen will come up to the plate now. One gone
- 50:28of a 1 -1 ball game. Allen is one for one. Here's
- 50:32the pitch. There's a drive and a little center
- 50:33field in the alley. This could be real trouble.
- 50:35Tartable running to his right and gloves it.
- 50:39Fine running grab by Jose Tartable as the A's
- 50:42continue to show that speed and defensive ability.
- 50:46And Alvin Dark has been so emphatic on starting
- 50:50back in spring training from the very first day.
- 50:56It was Allen who started the little uprising
- 50:59there in the third inning when he got a swing
- 51:01on the right field. When Hershberger let it go
- 51:03by for an error, Allen went to second. It was
- 51:06sacrificed to third by Grant after Versailles
- 51:08grounded off Al Espino, brought him in with a
- 51:10swing on the left, and the Twins led 1 -0. And
- 51:13Villiers tied it up on the fourth on a triple
- 51:15by Hershberger. And an infield out by Bryan.
- 51:17Now the batter is Whatcat Grant. Takes a called
- 51:20strike. Nice breaking pitch right at the knees.
- 51:24A's won. And the Twins won. The curtain raiser
- 51:29of 1966. Youngster is all ready. He deals. Called
- 51:33strike again. Outside corner. Temperature 52
- 51:38degrees at game time. The wind out of the east
- 51:41at 13 miles per hour. Now Hunter is ready. The
- 51:47pitch, low. The wind is coming out of the left
- 51:54field corner, blowing over the double deck stands
- 51:58and left. It's changed a little bit since before
- 52:00game time. Curve hit on the ground towards third.
- 52:03Scooped up nicely by Charles. The throw, in time.
- 52:08And the A's shut down the Twins. Hunter now has
- 52:11retired seven in a row. Three up, three down.
- 52:14Nothing a cause. And the score after five full
- 52:17innings of play remains. Minnesota Twins won.
- 52:20The Kansas City A's won. Now. KCMO Confidential.
- 52:2860 seconds inside a great radio station. It's
- 52:32early afternoon. The morning has melted away.
- 52:36Where does the time go? The neighbor lady drops
- 52:38in for coffee. A phone call from the cub master
- 52:41pleading for den mothers. A 45 -minute conversation
- 52:44with an old high school chum just passing through
- 52:47town who you never liked in the first place.
- 52:49A visit from your minister asking you to take
- 52:51over the entire vacation church school. A trucker
- 52:54unloads a cord of wood ordered in the dead of
- 52:57winter on your newly planted tomato bushes and
- 52:59it's 70 degrees. And your husband has just called
- 53:02and said he's bringing the boss home for dinner
- 53:04and the house still needs... and you're frantic
- 53:07and you don't know how you're going to make it
- 53:08through the day. Hi, welcome to the Dan Ronald
- 53:11Show. Ah, there's help. Dan Ronald and his velvet
- 53:15voice from 2 to 5 every afternoon. This has been
- 53:20KCMO Confidential. 60 seconds inside a great
- 53:24radio station. Next inning, we'll pause 10 seconds
- 53:28for station identification. This is the Kansas
- 53:31City Athletics Baseball Network. This is KCMO
- 53:34Radio 81, Kansas City, Missouri. Mid -America's
- 53:37important news station. 44 degrees, now 231.
- 53:45At Metropolitan Stadium in the Twin Cities, this
- 53:48is Lynn Ferris with Marty Moore. Hopefully you're
- 53:50enjoying our broadcast, fans, wherever you are,
- 53:53whatever you're doing. This game and all athletics
- 53:56games are brought to you by Ham's Beer. Have
- 53:58a ham. Pitcher versus pitcher. Catfish Hunter
- 54:01pops one up on the left side of the infield.
- 54:03Versailles is there. He's got it. So Hunter,
- 54:08who had sacrificed his only previous trip in
- 54:10the third inning, is the first out here in the
- 54:13top of the sixth. And this ball game is really
- 54:15sailing. Out of the top of the batting order,
- 54:18Jose Tartavale. 0 for 2. He's flying to center
- 54:20and grounded out. The A's have one hit, but it
- 54:24was a big one, a triple by Hershberger, who came
- 54:26in on an infield out by Bill Bryan. 1 -1 ball
- 54:29game. The speedster, Tartable, at the plate.
- 54:34Fans here seeing an outstanding pitcher's duel.
- 54:37There's a called strike on the outside corner,
- 54:39says Larry Knapp, calling the balls and strikes.
- 54:42John Rice at first base, Al Salerno at second,
- 54:45Jim Odom at third. Those are your American League
- 54:47umpires for this series. Outside and wall ball.
- 54:56Killebrew at third, Versailles at short, Allen
- 54:58at second, Mincher at first, Val Espino at left,
- 55:01Paul in center, Oliva in right, Earl batting
- 55:03back of the plate, and Grant on the mound. The
- 55:05pitch curve is going on, and a liner down the
- 55:07right field line, fair ball! And it's going into
- 55:09the corner, look at Tartable go around first.
- 55:11Ball fielded by Oliva, and Jose has a double.
- 55:14He goes in standing up, and that's only the second
- 55:16hit of Mudcat Grant. Tartable laced up beauty,
- 55:21just inside the line. Don't expect to hear too
- 55:28many cheers when the A's do something outstanding.
- 55:35I don't have to tell you the rabid followers
- 55:37here in the Twin Cities. Now the batter, Mike
- 55:41Hershberger. He owns the only other hit off Graham.
- 55:46Pitch is swung on and a pop foul. Back of first
- 55:48out of play. Landis Hershberger has really had
- 55:51a fine spring with the bat. He has taken it very
- 55:54slowly with his arm. He has, of course, not extended
- 55:57it any since he did have the operation on the
- 55:59winter on his throwing elbow. But he has really
- 56:01had a great swing down there. And, you know,
- 56:03some have said that maybe his protecting his
- 56:06arm a little bit has made him cut down on his
- 56:07swing and develop a better swing at the plate.
- 56:12Grant steps off the slab, and Hershberger is
- 56:14tired of waiting. Action here in the same ballpark
- 56:20tomorrow and on Thursday. Friday is an off day,
- 56:22and then the A's invade White Sox Park, Chicago.
- 56:25Single game Saturday, a twin bill on Sunday.
- 56:29Now here's Hershberger with a chance to drive
- 56:31and a run. The pitch. There's a bouncer towards
- 56:33short. Versailles is going to his right. Juggles
- 56:35the ball, and Hershberger is on. It's a base
- 56:40hit. Part of all. Did not try to lead second,
- 56:44and I think Versailles took his eye off the ball.
- 56:47He was very concerned about Pardable at second
- 56:49base. And in so doing, juggled the baseball,
- 56:53but they ruled it a base hit. Since it went into
- 56:56the hole, and the shortstop had to go to his
- 56:57right. Runners at first and second now, hit number
- 57:00three off Grant, and Wayne Crossey's at the plate,
- 57:030 for 2. Takes a strike call to the knee. Grant
- 57:19peers in to get his sign from Batting. Deals.
- 57:24Low of all. The count is 1 -1. One man out. The
- 57:29game is tied 1 -1. We're playing in the top half
- 57:31of the sixth inning. Hayes did very well against
- 57:39this ball club last year. Better than Minnesota's
- 57:41fans would like to recall. Here's the stretch
- 57:44and the pitch. There's a low liner towards short.
- 57:47Grabbed by Versailles. It's over to second. Out
- 57:49back into the first inning. And the stepping
- 57:54double play gets the Twins out of trouble here.
- 57:59Oh, the A's in the top of the sixth. No run.
- 58:02Two hits. No errors. One left. The score after
- 58:05five and a half innings of play remains Kansas
- 58:07City A's one, the Minnesota Twins one. When your
- 58:11thirst sends out a call for real refreshment,
- 58:13answer it with a call for refreshing hands beer,
- 58:16like this. The call to flavor refreshing from
- 58:21the land of sky blue water. From the land of
- 58:24sky blue water, comes the water best for brewing.
- 58:31And the beer refreshing, and the beer refreshing.
- 58:35The beer that's brewed with water best for brewing,
- 58:39tastes best, refreshes you best, glass after
- 58:42glass. Only Hans beer has that sky blue water's
- 58:46flavor. Every Hans has it. Glass after glass.
- 58:50That's why Ham's is the one right beer for those
- 58:53who want another. Tastes so right, it bears repeating.
- 58:57Capturing for you the coolness of blue lakes
- 59:03and sunset breezes. Ham's a beer refreshing.
- 59:08Ham's a beer refreshing. Well, to the bottom
- 59:20half of the sixth inning now. Wayne Causey hitting
- 59:23into that inning -ending double play. And the
- 59:27A's had a chance to score. Each side now has
- 59:32three hits in the ballgame. Top of the batting
- 59:34order, Versailles is up to a slow inside of all.
- 59:37He'll be followed by Val Espino and Tony Oliva.
- 59:41Hits in this game for the twins owned by Val
- 59:44Espino, Mincher, and Allen. Hunter has already
- 59:49deals a curve. A little low roller back to the
- 59:52mound over the first he got him. A's hits, double
- 1:00:01by Tartable, the triple, and single by Hershberger.
- 1:00:08Now Val Despino comes up. He flies to left field.
- 1:00:11That was a great catch, Larry Stormy. Gee, that
- 1:00:14was a beauty. And he's made so many of them in
- 1:00:18spring training. I can't recall him dropping
- 1:00:20one yet throughout spring training. And a sensational
- 1:00:24catch today. Al Despino is one for two. Takes
- 1:00:28low, a ball. It was his single that brought in
- 1:00:31Allen with the first run of the ball game in
- 1:00:33the third inning. It's one and one. Here are
- 1:00:36the Twin Cities in the sixth. Ryan flashes the
- 1:00:42sign. Here comes the pitch. Fly ball. Left field.
- 1:00:46Stahl is there, drifting to his right. He has
- 1:00:48it. Two gone will bring up Tony Oliva, who has
- 1:00:52flied to center and grounded out. The Mo Drabowski,
- 1:01:04former Kansas City A's pitcher, who was drafted
- 1:01:06by Baltimore over the winter, has just gone into
- 1:01:08the ballgame in the eighth inning for Agbar Baltimore
- 1:01:10Orioles in relief against Boston. Now Hunter
- 1:01:21taking his time. It's all set. Wines and deals.
- 1:01:24Swing and a miss. Catfish says the only way to
- 1:01:28pitch to Oliva is just throw the ball and hope.
- 1:01:30He says you've got to move it around on this
- 1:01:32guy. American League batting champion of 1965.
- 1:01:39He hit .262 against Kansas City pitching last
- 1:01:43year. Fifteen runs batted in. And four homers.
- 1:01:50The pitch on the way. Hot smash on the ground.
- 1:01:52What a stop by Green as he goes to his knees.
- 1:01:54Over to first. He got it. Three up and three
- 1:01:59down. And the 20 -year -old youngster continues
- 1:02:01to sail along. He's now retired the last ten
- 1:02:04minutes of whom he's faced. The score after six
- 1:02:07full innings of play remains Kansas City A's
- 1:02:10one and the Minnesota Twins one. The first game
- 1:02:15of the season. No matter how many baseball games
- 1:02:17you watch or listen to, there's something special
- 1:02:19about opening day. Everybody starts all even
- 1:02:22again, and hope runs high for players and fans
- 1:02:24alike. Today, our good friends at Traders National
- 1:02:27Bank welcome the A's in baseball back to action.
- 1:02:31During the season, we'll be bringing you regular
- 1:02:34messages from Traders, so we hope all you fans
- 1:02:37will get acquainted real soon with Traders National,
- 1:02:40the service bank of Kansas City, Grand at 12.
- 1:02:46For fans of Kansas City Athletics, return back
- 1:02:48home to Municipal Stadium in Kansas City. We'll
- 1:02:50play these Twins at 7 o 'clock next Tuesday night.
- 1:02:53Plenty of good choice seats are available. We'd
- 1:02:55love to have that ballpark completely filled
- 1:02:57up to start off our season. The show days will
- 1:02:59be behind them all the way. We'll play the Twins
- 1:03:02again on Wednesday night, the 20th. Then the
- 1:03:04Chicago White Sox are in town for a weekend series
- 1:03:06on Friday night, the 22nd, Saturday night, the
- 1:03:0823rd, and Sunday afternoon, the 24th. Here are
- 1:03:17the six -inning totals on the ballgame. The Kansas
- 1:03:19City A's have one run on three hits. They've
- 1:03:23committed one error and left two men on base.
- 1:03:28The Minnesota Twins, one run, three hits, no
- 1:03:31errors. They've left two men on base. You know,
- 1:03:36talking about Oliva as we were a moment ago,
- 1:03:39it's interesting to note... But he had a rough
- 1:03:42time against Kansas City pitching. There's only
- 1:03:45one ball club against which he had a worse time,
- 1:03:47and that was the California Angels. He hit just
- 1:03:50.228 against them and .262 against the A's. First
- 1:03:56pitch is on its way, a called strike. And the
- 1:03:58batter is Bill Bryant. He's 0 for 2. He drove
- 1:04:00in a run. And that's unusual because the year
- 1:04:03before, Tony's first year in the American League,
- 1:04:05he hit right at .500. I think it was .484 or
- 1:04:07.485 against us for the year. Next pitch, lower
- 1:04:11ball. Well, you know, Marty, he hit the Boston
- 1:04:14Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, and
- 1:04:19the New York Yankees and Senators like he owned
- 1:04:21them. That is 4 -0 -3 against Boston. Now the
- 1:04:261 -1 pitch to Bryant. Swing and a miss! He'll
- 1:04:32be followed to the plate by Harrelson and Larry
- 1:04:34Stahl. One and one here in the Twin Cities. Bryan
- 1:04:37is 0 for 2, but he drove in an important run
- 1:04:39in the fourth after Hershberger had tripled.
- 1:04:47Now Grant is ready. He delivers. There's a bouncer
- 1:04:49hit into the hole, and on the right side, Mincher
- 1:04:52cuts it off over to the pitcher on a nice play.
- 1:04:54They got him. Allen started for the ball. Mincher
- 1:04:57cut in front of him and made the play. One out,
- 1:05:03Ken Harrelson has struck out and grounded out.
- 1:05:11Grant was beaten twice last year by the Athletics.
- 1:05:16He was able to win only once, and that was in
- 1:05:19Kansas City when he beat John O'Donoghue 3 -1
- 1:05:21on July 2nd. Catch on his way, low ball. Both
- 1:05:27of the games he lost was right here. Boswell
- 1:05:35and Ragenberg working in the bullpen for the
- 1:05:38Twins. There's a ball. It's the outside corner,
- 1:05:45just below the knees. The A's have activity out
- 1:05:48there now. That bullpen is in deep right center,
- 1:05:50behind the fence, and just in front of the scoreboard.
- 1:05:55Dixon and Lindblad are throwing. Or Dodson, that
- 1:05:59is. That's Chuck Dodson. Pop -up foul territory
- 1:06:01between third and... And home. Killebrew's there.
- 1:06:04So is Batty. Batty has it. So Harrelson popped
- 1:06:12foul. We're on number two. And it will bring
- 1:06:14up Larry Stahl. He's over two. He's lined to
- 1:06:17right. And popped out to Killebrew. Both of those
- 1:06:27games, Grant lost to the A's last year. We're
- 1:06:30right here in this ballpark. He started four
- 1:06:33games against Kansas City, was able to complete
- 1:06:35only one. There's a line drive down the right
- 1:06:37field line. Curving foul. Stahl laid the wood
- 1:06:41to it. Kansas City marksman tagged Grant for
- 1:06:5424 hits in 23 innings. Better than a hit in any.
- 1:06:58And they nailed him for a three -home run. Now
- 1:07:03the one -strike pitch outside, 1 -1. Score of
- 1:07:07the ball game. Nobody on, two away. We're in
- 1:07:17the top of the seventh. Wind up in the pitch
- 1:07:20outside. Camilo Pascual, 9 -3 last year. Slater
- 1:07:27to go tomorrow against Raleigh Sheldon, who is
- 1:07:2910 -8. And on Thursday, expected to be 18 -game
- 1:07:32winner Jim Cott against Fred Talbot, who is 10
- 1:07:38-12. And a miss and a let -up curveball. Grant
- 1:07:43gave him a lot of motion. The count is 2 -2.
- 1:08:00Brisk wind continues to blow across the field
- 1:08:04left to right. Here it comes. Outside. That is
- 1:08:083 -2. Mudcat Grant, native of Ohio, offers the
- 1:08:253 -2 pitch. It's fouled off to the left. The
- 1:08:37pitcher of the year, 1965, 21 wins, 7 losses.
- 1:08:43Six of those 21 victories were shutouts. The
- 1:08:463 -2 pitch again. Inside! He walked in. We have
- 1:08:51a delay in the ballgame. Let's pause for half
- 1:08:53a minute. Need a truck or van for a day or so?
- 1:08:56Contact Valentine Drive Yourself, 3626 Main and

- 1:09:19reserve now by calling Jefferson 1 -2500. Valentine
- 1:09:22Drive Yourself, 3626 Main and 500 West 4th. Dick
- 1:09:27Green is the batter. Here comes the pitch. Inside
- 1:09:30and high. Ball one. Larry Stoll at first base.
- 1:09:34Two men out here in the top of the seventh inning.
- 1:09:381 -0, the count on Green. That walk to stall
- 1:09:43was the second. The hard -throwing right -hander
- 1:09:45is issued. Here it comes. It's up high again.
- 1:09:48And now the shortstop, Versailles, trots in toward
- 1:09:50the mound to say a few words to his pitcher.
- 1:09:55You know, the only guys able to beat this fella
- 1:09:57last year were Cleveland's Teot, the Yankees'
- 1:10:00Whitey Ford, Kansas City's Diego Segui, and Catfish
- 1:10:04Hunter, Yankees' Mel Stottlemyre. John Buzzhart
- 1:10:08of the White Sox and Aubrey Gatewood of the Angels.
- 1:10:172 -0 the Cops. Stahl is an important man over
- 1:10:21there at first base. Ran into the stretch. Here
- 1:10:24it comes. Swung on and a drive into left center
- 1:10:26field. Val Espino going to his left. Paul to
- 1:10:28his right. It falls in. A base hit. Stahl around
- 1:10:30second. Turing for third. And he goes in standing
- 1:10:33up. The pro comes in. And it's cut off just back
- 1:10:38of the mound. Boy, talk about the reinforcement.
- 1:10:43Batty was there. Grant. Boy, talk about the reinforcement.
- 1:10:47Batty was there. Grant was there. Minter there.
- 1:10:50Of course, that's Minter's position. Come in
- 1:10:52and cover on that play. That's only the fourth
- 1:10:56hit. The A's take the lead in that category.
- 1:11:02The Twins have just three hits off Hunter. Now
- 1:11:04the A's have runners at first and third, and
- 1:11:06it brings up Ed Charles who has walked and flied
- 1:11:08to right. Charles waits at the plate. Here's
- 1:11:20the 50. Started to go and held up a ball. Ed
- 1:11:27batted .245 against this ball club last year.
- 1:11:31He has 13 hits and 53 trips. One homer and eight
- 1:11:35RBIs. Grant has slowed up a little bit now. He's
- 1:11:42moving around in that mound. Taking a little
- 1:11:45more time. Peers in for a sign. Deal. Smash on
- 1:11:48the ground. Sort short. Versailles has it over
- 1:11:50the second for the fourth play. So an opportunity
- 1:11:55is lost in the top of the seventh. No run score.
- 1:12:00One hit. No error. and two are left. And after
- 1:12:03six and a half innings of play, the score, Minnesota
- 1:12:06Twins won, the Kansas City A's won. In an action
- 1:12:10-packed game like baseball, it takes only seconds
- 1:12:13for the ball to leave the bat and swiftly wing
- 1:12:15its way over the outfield fence. It takes you
- 1:12:18only seconds to reach into your refrigerator
- 1:12:20for another hands beer. Have a hands right now
- 1:12:24before play gets underway. Hands is the one right
- 1:12:27beer for those who want another. And that's because
- 1:12:29hands is drooled from water that's for brewing.
- 1:12:32So go ahead, have a hand, and how about a little
- 1:12:35music to wing you on the way to the kitchen?
- 1:12:39From the land of sky blue waters, comes the water
- 1:12:44that's for brewing. Hands up here refreshing,
- 1:12:48hands up here refreshing. Capturing for you the
- 1:12:53coolness of the length and touch that breathes.
- 1:13:09Well, the fans here in the Twin Cities getting
- 1:13:14a big kick out of the musical accompaniment from
- 1:13:18the organ. And they're foot stomping. And Harmon
- 1:13:25Killebrew, Don Minter, and Jimmy Hall face...
- 1:13:2820 -year -old catfish hunter. The youngster has
- 1:13:31been most impressive today. Here's a fish outside
- 1:13:33in the wall. We talked a lot in Florida about
- 1:13:37his opening night assignment, about which he
- 1:13:40knew, oh, some two and a half weeks ago. He was
- 1:13:44eagerly awaiting it. Here it comes, outside the
- 1:13:49F .C. Curve. A guy like Chillebrew, that's the
- 1:13:59way you've got to pitch him or try to jam him.
- 1:14:01The count is 2 -0. 1 -1 ball game. We're in the
- 1:14:05seventh. Here it comes. Oh, right. Nice curveball.
- 1:14:08Boy, he's had a great curveball today, Larry.
- 1:14:10It has really been his savior. He's had a good
- 1:14:12fastball, but he's had that curveball. Breaking
- 1:14:15so sharply several times, they've hit it right
- 1:14:17off the end of the pad, right back to him. He's
- 1:14:19really had a break. Now Hunter is set, and the
- 1:14:232 -1 pitch is on its way. Foul back against the
- 1:14:25green. Al Espino, Mincher, and Allen own the
- 1:14:31only three bases off the native North Carolinians.
- 1:14:37It was retired the last ten men whom he's based.
- 1:14:41The 2 -2 pitch. Bouncer foul on the third baseline.
- 1:14:47Billy Martin made a half -hearted effort to stop
- 1:14:49it. Decided he wouldn't take a chance on injuries
- 1:14:53to his knuckles, so he just let it sail by. Metropolitan
- 1:14:56Stadium today is Gailey decked out in red, white,
- 1:15:02and blue punting. Here's a 2 -2 pitch. He got
- 1:15:05him! A pretty curveball letter high, and Killebrew
- 1:15:08knew it. That breaking pitch again, just not
- 1:15:12thrown hard on the half -speed variety. Laney
- 1:15:16really caught him looking that time. That's the
- 1:15:17first time today Catfish has dropped down sidearm.
- 1:15:19And he went sidearm and Killebrew went back on
- 1:15:21his heels. That was through on the bench and
- 1:15:23knew it. That's his first track out of the game,
- 1:15:25but it was a big one. Yes, and he picked a good
- 1:15:28spot. Forget it. Minter, one for two. At the
- 1:15:31plate now. Back left -handed. It's a fly ball
- 1:15:34into left center field. Going to his left is
- 1:15:36Stahl, waiting. He has it. Two gone. And it will
- 1:15:43bring to the plate Jimmy Hall, who has walked
- 1:15:45and fouled out. Checking the Kansas City A's
- 1:15:49American League scoreboard, the Detroit Tiger
- 1:15:52-New York Yankee game is still tied up 1 -1 after
- 1:15:55six and a half. Pepitone is homered for the Bombers,
- 1:15:57Ford versus Woolwich. Baltimore -Boston knotted
- 1:16:02up a 3 -3 at the end of seven. Barber against
- 1:16:04Wilson, the Robinson boys are homered. Here's
- 1:16:07the pitch. Blow a ball. He started to go, checked
- 1:16:11his swing. Drabowski is in relief of Barber.
- 1:16:14Angels got a run in the fifth. They lead the
- 1:16:15White Sox 1 -0. That came on Adcock's homer.
- 1:16:18Now, wait a minute. Adcock has homered in the
- 1:16:20sixth with nobody on, so California leads by
- 1:16:23at least 2 -0. The Vets foul back against the
- 1:16:27screen. Cleveland, Washington have the day off.
- 1:16:31In the National, Houston and the Dodgers, Pittsburgh,
- 1:16:35Atlanta, Phillies and the Cardinals playing at
- 1:16:38night. The Mets and Cincinnati have been rained
- 1:16:40on for the second day in a row. Only the Cubs
- 1:16:42and Giants are playing the San Fernando. Now
- 1:16:46the 1 -1 pitch. There's a drive and it's deep
- 1:16:48right center field. Hershberger going way back
- 1:16:51and so is Pardable and Jose's got it on the warning
- 1:16:54pass. All tied well. Now nothing across. And
- 1:17:03the score after seven full innings for Maine,
- 1:17:05Kansas City A's won, and Minnesota Twins won.

- 1:18:03Music by Muzak. Call KCMO Business Music Services
- 1:18:07at Baltimore 1 -1515 for Muzak. Well, we're ready
- 1:18:13to go for action in the top half of the eighth
- 1:18:15inning. Hunter, Tartable, and Hershberger will
- 1:18:17lead away against one Chad Grant. Mentioning
- 1:18:21that rainout Cincinnati had. I said earlier it's
- 1:18:25the first time since they've been rained out,
- 1:18:26or the first time since the year 1913 I've met,
- 1:18:29of course, on opening day. And now they've got
- 1:18:31another one today. Here's the first pitch. Inside
- 1:18:36and all of all. Yes, indeed, 19 -13. Sits in.
- 1:18:55There's a drive into right center field. It's
- 1:18:57falling in, a base hit. And Catfish Hunter helps
- 1:19:00his own cause, getting a base hit, which is number
- 1:19:03five off Grant. So we'll bring up Jose Tarnable
- 1:19:09as the A's have another opportunity here now
- 1:19:12in the eighth inning. Boy, what a pitcher's duel
- 1:19:16this is. The leader of the twin bullpen has just
- 1:19:26gotten up and gone to work for the first time.
- 1:19:27Lutkamp did not go this far in any spring game,
- 1:19:29so since he did get down there a couple of weeks
- 1:19:32late, he may be tiring a little. Now Tarnable
- 1:19:36at the plate drives a buck. It goes far off to
- 1:19:38the left. Strike one. And Hunter, who now has
- 1:19:40donned his green jacket, was all the way to second.
- 1:19:44Jose is one for three in the game. I might point
- 1:19:49out, talking about that Cincinnati game, it was
- 1:19:51not a regularly scheduled game. It was rescheduled
- 1:19:54from yesterday. Those Mets and Reds will play
- 1:20:05tomorrow night. Take over the first base. It's
- 1:20:07close. He got it. Hunter was diving back in.
- 1:20:16Al Vincent hollering about it the first base.
- 1:20:20One step on the, or one foot on the dugout steps
- 1:20:23is not moving. And that's a big play, Monty.
- 1:20:25A pickoff, a runner by Jim Grant. Grant has about
- 1:20:30as good a motion as any right -hander, but I'll
- 1:20:32tell you this, it is, just as you said, a mighty
- 1:20:35big play. One strike count on Tartable. Pitch
- 1:20:42is one out and far, a lot to the left. You've
- 1:20:46got a psych ball game like this in a very close
- 1:20:49picture to you all. And those plays become the
- 1:20:52big ones because they can open things up. Speaking
- 1:20:59of opening things up, fans, how about having
- 1:21:01a Hans? For that frosty, cool, sky -blue water
- 1:21:06flavor. Remember, Hans is brewed with water,
- 1:21:09best for brewing. Your host for all these games
- 1:21:12at Home and Away. The pitch is outside and low
- 1:21:15a ball. The count is one and two on Pardable.
- 1:21:19One out. Eighth inning, one -one game. There's
- 1:21:21a liner towards short and grabbed by Versailles.
- 1:21:26Two out. We'll bring up Hirschberger, who's two
- 1:21:29for three with a single and a triple. He scored
- 1:21:31the eighth only run in the fourth inning when
- 1:21:32Bryant brought him in on an infield out. The
- 1:21:42pickoff play changes the whole complexion of
- 1:21:44the inning. Charlevoix was all out going to try
- 1:21:47to sacrifice. Of course, Jimmy got caught cheating
- 1:21:49a little bit trying to get a little head start
- 1:21:50on the punt and just got shot down. Changes the
- 1:21:54strategy, as you point out. Every batsman coming
- 1:21:56up now has to do things differently. That's fouled
- 1:21:59back into the screen. Strike one. I'll be on
- 1:22:06following this game, fans. With a complete wrap
- 1:22:10-up of the scores of all the other games in both
- 1:22:12the National and American League. That's high,
- 1:22:15a ball. Don't forget that every A's ball game
- 1:22:24is preceded by Monty's pregame show. Today, he
- 1:22:28had on the Georgia Peach, Lucius Luke Appling.
- 1:22:32I bet you could have talked with him for five
- 1:22:34hours, Monty. You could have listened that long.
- 1:22:38Outside and low ball on a slow -breaking pitch.
- 1:22:43Boy, this guy has stories. 10 ,000 miles long,
- 1:22:49it seems, and they're all colorful. 2 -1 the
- 1:22:55Cubs. H -1, the Twins won. We're playing in the
- 1:22:59eighth inning. The pitch, a drive hit out on
- 1:23:00the left center field. Could be trouble. Val
- 1:23:02Luchino going to his left. Reaches up and down.
- 1:23:20Kansas City A's won, and the Minnesota Twins
- 1:23:23won. Now here's the story of a land of magic
- 1:23:27enchantment, a land where refreshment rules supreme.
- 1:23:33The town sounds echoing, tell you, a sky blue
- 1:23:36water dribbling coolly by you. They're singing,
- 1:23:39they're bringing cool refreshment to you. Come
- 1:23:42the land of sky blue water, come the water best
- 1:23:48for brewing. The beer that's brewed with water,
- 1:23:55best for brewing. Tastes best, refreshes you
- 1:23:57best. And only Ham's has that sky -blue water's
- 1:24:01flavor. Every Ham's has it, glass after glass.
- 1:24:04That's why it wins one. We're playing in the
- 1:24:06eighth inning. The pitch, a drive hit out on
- 1:24:08the left center field. Could be troubled. Now
- 1:24:10the speed is going to his left. First burger
- 1:24:19gets robbed. And a fine running grab by Val Espino.
- 1:24:22No runs, not one hit. No errors and one left.
- 1:24:25And the score after seven and a half innings
- 1:24:27remains Kansas City A's one and the Minnesota
- 1:24:30Twins one. Now here's the story of a land of
- 1:24:34magic enchantment. A land where refreshment rules
- 1:24:37supreme. From the land of sky blue waters, comes
- 1:24:54the water that's... Refreshing Ham's Beer. The
- 1:25:01beer that's brewed with water best for brewing.
- 1:25:03Tastes best, refreshes you best. And only Ham's
- 1:25:06has that sky blue water's flavor. Every Ham's
- 1:25:10has it. Glass after glass. That's why Ham's is
- 1:25:13the one right beer for those who want another.
- 1:25:15Tastes so right, it bears repeating. From the
- 1:25:19land of sky blue water comes the water best for
- 1:25:25brewing. of the eighth inning. And it will be
- 1:25:43Earl Batty, Bernie Allen, Mudcat Grant. You're
- 1:25:46up. We could get a pinch hitter for him. Batty
- 1:25:51has hit into a double play and grounded out.
- 1:25:53He's 0 for 2. Hunter looks him over. Deal. Wow.
- 1:25:57Back against the screen. Strike one. You possibly
- 1:26:06heard that. Today's paid attendance here at Metropolitan
- 1:26:11Stadium for the home opener, 21 ,658. Next pitch
- 1:26:17is low. Sakata's 1 -1. That's an outstanding
- 1:26:19crowd. As I recall, the record here for a home
- 1:26:24opener is 24 ,000. So that's just three short
- 1:26:27for our A's here to open the season. Now the
- 1:26:301 -1 pitch inside. Gee, this has been a tight
- 1:26:34ball game. The A's are ahead in hits. They have
- 1:26:38five off Grant, including two for extra bases,
- 1:26:41the double by Tarnable, the triple by Hershberger.
- 1:26:44Hunter has allowed just three hits to the Twins.
- 1:26:50Now the 2 -1 offering. Way inside. Hunter has
- 1:26:57retired 13 men in a row. The last man to get
- 1:27:00on base was Valdez -Spino in the third inning.
- 1:27:11Here's the 3 -1 pitch. There's a bouncing court
- 1:27:14short. It's grabbed by Fonzie, the peg. He got
- 1:27:18it. Now we'll pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:27:21This is the Kansas City Athletics baseball network.
- 1:27:25This is KCMO Radio 81, Kansas City, Missouri.
- 1:27:29Now four minutes past 3 o 'clock, 45 degrees
- 1:27:32under cloudy skies. The batter is Bernie Allen.
- 1:27:40He scored Minnesota's only run. He's one for
- 1:27:43two. Here's the pitch. Called strike to the left
- 1:27:46-handed batter. They're making the announcement
- 1:27:49that this is the third largest crowd for opening
- 1:27:51day in Twins history. What up? Allen at the plate.
- 1:27:57The pitch. There's O 'Neal. Look out. A drive
- 1:27:59and a deep right center. Way, way back. Hershberger
- 1:28:01going back. He's got it. in the first inning
- 1:28:09and gone to second when Hershberger let that
- 1:28:11ball get by him for an error. Mike Kane through
- 1:28:14this time. Two gone. Grant is due up. He will
- 1:28:19bat. 1 -1 ball game. Pitcher faces pitcher. Here
- 1:28:35it comes. Call strike it on a Jesus Hunter. He
- 1:28:38has been tremendous today. Well, we hope you're
- 1:28:43enjoying the broadcast, wherever you are, whatever
- 1:28:45you're doing this afternoon. Now the next pitch,
- 1:28:49foul off to the right. Remember that we'll be
- 1:28:50home on April 19th to open against these same
- 1:28:53Minnesota Swans. We hope you'll plan to be with
- 1:28:55us at Municipal Stadium. The A's have... Charles
- 1:29:06at third, Causey at short, Green at second, Harrelson
- 1:29:10at first. Stahl in left, Carnival in center,
- 1:29:13Hershberger in right, Bill Bryant back at the
- 1:29:14plate, and 20 -year -old Jim Hunter on the mound.
- 1:29:18All nine men started, and they're in there now.
- 1:29:27I can't think of any better idea right now than
- 1:29:30to have a hand from the land of sky -blue waters.
- 1:29:34Side arms him outside. You know, in a tense ball
- 1:29:39game like this or at any other time of the year,
- 1:29:41day or night, hands refreshes you best. Here's
- 1:29:46the one -two pitch outside. Hunter's coming in
- 1:29:51with that great big curveball. For those of you
- 1:30:01who joined us late, we've made mention of this
- 1:30:03a couple of times. We don't want to jinx this
- 1:30:05boy, but the Twins have never beaten Hunter.
- 1:30:08The pitch. He got him on a called strike three.
- 1:30:13And that strikeout number two. Sixteen men in
- 1:30:18a row. He's now retired. Three up, three down,
- 1:30:20nothing across. After eight full innings of play,
- 1:30:22the score, Twins won the A's one. No. MCMO Confidential.
- 1:30:3160 seconds inside a great radio station. You're
- 1:30:35in your car. All day long, you've been at work,
- 1:30:38out of touch. Traffic is terrible. You're wondering

- 1:31:135 .30, here's Harold Inslee. Hi again, everybody.
- 1:31:16Isn't it good to know? Someone cares. This has
- 1:31:20been KCMO Confidential. 60 seconds inside a great
- 1:31:25radio station. Ready to go in the top half of
- 1:31:29the ninth inning. The plot thickens in its pitcher's
- 1:31:32duel. Vin Ferris with Monty Moore. An opening
- 1:31:36day of 1966. Wayne Crosby, Bill Bryan, and Ken
- 1:31:39Harrelson face Mudcat Grant. Here's the first
- 1:31:41pitch. Strike call. Causey has not been able
- 1:31:46to get the ball up in the air today. He's grounded
- 1:31:48out three times, once for a double play. Each
- 1:31:51side has a twin killing. Grant looks him over
- 1:31:55and delivers. There's a liner to center field.
- 1:31:56Face hit. Grabbed on one hop by Hall. Well, Monty,
- 1:32:04there's a case where people say, you say things
- 1:32:06like he's retired the last 16 men in a row and
- 1:32:08the 17th man gets a base hit, you jinx them.
- 1:32:11You can do that from up here. Let me know. We
- 1:32:15can use you this spring. There's going to be
- 1:32:17some times when we want to jinx somebody. Well,
- 1:32:22Wayne hasn't been able to get a ball up in the
- 1:32:24air or out of the infield, and he just now did,
- 1:32:26and it's hit number six. Bob Grant, the A's allowed
- 1:32:29hit this ball club 6 -3, but the score is tied
- 1:32:321 -1. Bill Bryan at the plate, he's driven in,
- 1:32:35the A's only run. Infield in tight. Grant stretches
- 1:32:37and deals. Bunt, fouled off to the right. 21
- 1:32:48,658. The plate attendance, and it was 52 degrees
- 1:32:55at game time. So the twins come up with just
- 1:33:21that, a twin killing, and it's their second of
- 1:33:23the afternoon. The A's have had men on base now
- 1:33:30in every inning except the fifth. from the fourth
- 1:33:34inning on. In other words, the fourth, sixth,
- 1:33:36seventh, eighth, and here are the ninths. Batter
- 1:33:39is Harrelson. Pop fouls one off to the right.
- 1:33:41It's going out of play. But the opportunity in
- 1:33:55the sixth was won out after Carnival's double
- 1:33:58and Hershberger's single was erased by Crosby's
- 1:34:01hitting into the double play. There's another
- 1:34:04pop file off to the right, and they won't be
- 1:34:07able to get this one. That was two gone and a
- 1:34:09seventh stall walked in green single, but Charles
- 1:34:12entered the inning, hitting into a forced play.
- 1:34:15Hunter led off the eighth with a single, but
- 1:34:17got picked off at first. Here in the ninth, causey
- 1:34:20single, but Brian hits into the double play.
- 1:34:24Maybe we'd like to have those fellas driving
- 1:34:26those ham trucks down in Mid -America to work
- 1:34:28a little harder today. We have some supervisors
- 1:34:30from the brewery right here with us. That pitch
- 1:34:33is in the dirt. Come on. And Len Johnson, director
- 1:34:35of marketing, is here with us to say hello today.

- 1:34:41and Frank Rolfes and John Callahan are all here
- 1:34:44with us. And I want to pass along hello to everybody
- 1:34:48back in Mid -America on those big ham trucks.
- 1:34:51There's a bouncer toward short. Versailles charging
- 1:34:53his back. Hands it over to first. He got it.
- 1:34:59A great play by Versailles on a tough ball. and
- 1:35:03a frank scoop up by Minter. No runs, one hit.
- 1:35:07No errors, none left. After eight and a half
- 1:35:10innings of play, the score, the Twins won, the
- 1:35:13Athletics won. This message is for men who don't
- 1:35:17smoke. You've read the news stories. You know
- 1:35:21the facts. You know that you have a better chance
- 1:35:24to live longer and enjoy life more than the man
- 1:35:28who smokes. Isn't it about time somebody rewarded
- 1:35:32the nonsmoker by reducing his life insurance
- 1:35:35rate? Somebody has. Farmers Insurance Group.
- 1:35:41We read those statistics, too. We know you're
- 1:35:44a better risk. That's why we've pioneered a new
- 1:35:48nonsmoker policy that insures your life for a
- 1:35:52lot less money. Let me repeat. If you don't smoke...
- 1:35:58Farmer's new non -smoker policy will insure your
- 1:36:01life for a lot less money. You may claim your
- 1:36:06reward from any Farmer's agent. It's in yellow
- 1:36:09pages under Farmer's Insurance Group. Have a
- 1:36:13nice day. And Oliva up to face Gaffish Hunter.
- 1:36:30And you really have to admire this youngster.
- 1:36:33What a job he's done this afternoon. For science
- 1:36:37is 0 for 3. Here's the lineup and the pitch.
- 1:36:40Low of all. Hunter has retired the last 16 men
- 1:36:47in a row. Here's the next pitch. Curve misses,
- 1:37:00breaking too soon to the right -handed batter.
- 1:37:02It's 2 -0. Hayes had good fortune against Versailles
- 1:37:11last year. He hit just 2 -10 in 18 ballgames
- 1:37:13against Kansas City pitching. That's a little
- 1:37:17bit low outside for ball three. Three balls,
- 1:37:28no strikes. One, one ball game. Bottom half of
- 1:37:33the ninth inning. Ryan gives the sign and here
- 1:37:38it comes. Way inside. He walked him on four pitches.
- 1:37:46So Versailles becomes the first man to get on
- 1:37:49base since Val Despino back in the third inning.
- 1:37:54And that's only the second walk by Hunter. Jim
- 1:37:58Hall working for a base on balls in the second.
- 1:38:07Well, the wind speed right now can start to show,
- 1:38:09Lynn. They're right in the part of their batting
- 1:38:10order where they can do some things with the
- 1:38:12men they have. Versailles, for instance, is one
- 1:38:14of their best base runners. Val Espino is an
- 1:38:17excellent runner. And with the number three hitter
- 1:38:21Oliva coming up, they can operate here in the
- 1:38:23ninth inning. And this is the kind of work that
- 1:38:26manager Sam Mealy last year won a lot of ballgames
- 1:38:30with. John Wyatt's going to work out in our bullpen,
- 1:38:35too, by the way. I was just about to say to the
- 1:38:38real fan who follows this great game, this is
- 1:38:41the type of situation that gives you goosebumps
- 1:38:42when a leadoff man in the ninth. Get down. Particularly
- 1:38:46with a walk. Here's a pitch. Call. Strike. The
- 1:38:48whole infield. Pull in. Charles was almost close
- 1:38:52enough to shake the hand of Al Espino. Harrelson
- 1:38:58wasn't more than a 15 -foot punt shot. One strike
- 1:39:06count. Versailles at first. He can fly. He's
- 1:39:11anticipating that punt now. A pitch on its way.
- 1:39:15Mustard foul off the plate comes back and hits
- 1:39:17him in the left leg. And now Hunter is out front.
- 1:39:23A lot of things can happen in this situation
- 1:39:25with the infield being broken up like that. Val
- 1:39:27Espino has all kinds of room to shoot a bouncer
- 1:39:30through the infield if he elects to swing. I
- 1:39:32don't think they'll crash with that suicide defense
- 1:39:34now with two strikes as they have been, but they
- 1:39:36still have to guard against the button. A concerned
- 1:39:41Alvin Dark. With his foot on the dugout steps.
- 1:39:44Here's a pitch. Throws it away. It's way outside.
- 1:39:47And here goes Versailles racing around second.
- 1:39:49He's going to hold up. Ryan retrieves the ball.
- 1:39:53And it's a wild pitch. Now the A's have trouble.
- 1:40:13Waste one, and waste one he did. The pitch got
- 1:40:15away from him. It was outside and high to Brian's
- 1:40:18left. 1 -1 ballgame. Nobody out. 9th and 8th.
- 1:40:21Runner at second base. Brian gives the all -important
- 1:40:29sign. The 1 -2 pitch. And it's a great win for
- 1:40:55the Minnesota Twins, and it's always great to
- 1:40:56start off your home season, particularly when
- 1:40:58you're American League champions with a victory.
- 1:41:01So Val Espino wins the ballgame with a shot in
- 1:41:05the right field, which is only the fourth hit
- 1:41:07of Hunter. No outs in the ninth inning as Versailles
- 1:41:13scores the winning run. A 2 -1 ballgame, Minnesota
- 1:41:19winning. following the game. Once again, here's
- 1:41:27Monty. caused the athletics infield to have to
- 1:41:46start moving around a little bit, and that was
- 1:41:48with two strikes on Val Espino. Catfish threw
- 1:41:50a fastball high and away. The ball actually hit
- 1:41:52the mitt of Bill Bryant, and it looked as if
- 1:41:54he might have been able to catch the ball or
- 1:41:56at least knock it down, but he went on back to
- 1:41:59the screen. That allowed Versailles to go into
- 1:42:01second base, and then Val Espino got the two
- 1:42:03-strike pitch and drilled it into right field.
- 1:42:05The Twins had taken a 1 -0 lead in this ballgame
- 1:42:08in the third inning, scoring an unearned... When
- 1:42:11Richie Allen got a single, was sacrificed to
- 1:42:13second by Grant. Then a ball was hit by Val Despino
- 1:42:17into right field. It was mishandled by Mike Hershberger,
- 1:42:22and the runner came in to score. That made it
- 1:42:27a 1 -0 game. The A's tied it up in the fourth
- 1:42:28inning when Hershberger came back to get a triple
- 1:42:30and scored on the ground out. by Bill Bryan.
- 1:42:32That's all the scoring the A's could do, though
- 1:42:34they did threaten several times against Mudcat
- 1:42:36Grant. In the sixth inning, Causey hit into a
- 1:42:39double play with Tartable and Hershberger on
- 1:42:41to end the rally. And in the ninth inning, Bill
- 1:42:43Bryan hit into a double play with Wayne Causey
- 1:42:45on as a leadoff batter here in the ninth. The
- 1:42:47last score for the game for the winning twins,
- 1:42:49two runs, four hits, and no errors, for the Kansas
- 1:42:52City Athletics, one run, six hits, and one error.
- 1:42:55The winning pitcher, Mudcat Grant, who takes
- 1:42:57a... right where he left off last year, getting
- 1:42:59a victory. He is 1 -0 now, and Catfish Hunter
- 1:43:01is no wins, one loss. Both pitchers went all
- 1:43:04the way for outstanding performances here on
- 1:43:06opening day 1966 before 21 ,658 fans. So the
- 1:43:11final score again, the Twins 2 and the A's 1.

- 1:45:45with our scoreboard and our first one of the
- 1:45:481966 season. Here's the way games are shaping
- 1:45:52up now in the American League. At Yankee Stadium
- 1:45:56in New York, the Detroit Tigers have gotten a
- 1:46:00run in the ninth inning and have taken a 2 -1
- 1:46:02lead over the New York Yankees. Lulich is on
- 1:46:06for the Tigers. Ford has been relieved by Pedro
- 1:46:08Ramos in the ninth inning. The Bombers now are
- 1:46:11batting. Joe Pepitone, Homer, in the fifth with
- 1:46:13nobody on. So Detroit leads 2 -1 with New York
- 1:46:17batting in the ninth. At Fenway Park in Boston,
- 1:46:20the Orioles have gotten a go -ahead run. Check
- 1:46:25it. They've been able to tie it up. It's a 4
- 1:46:28-4 ballgame now with Boston batting in the bottom
- 1:46:30of the ninth. Wilson started against Barber.
- 1:46:33But several changes since then. Drabowski now
- 1:46:35pitching for Baltimore in the eighth inning.
- 1:46:37Raddatz relieved Wilson in the ninth. Grilly
- 1:46:40came on for Raddatz, and Osinski now is in action.
- 1:46:42Homers in the ballgame, the Robinson boys struck.
- 1:46:45Brooks in the first with nobody on. Frank in
- 1:46:48the fifth, none on. Two homers by the dynamic
- 1:46:50duos are being called. At White Sox Park in Chicago,
- 1:46:55the Angels lead 2 -0 after six and a half innings.
- 1:47:00Tommy Agee has homered in the seventh with one
- 1:47:03on just now, so that means it's tied up. It's
- 1:47:06a 2 -2 game. Chance started against John. Locker
- 1:47:09now is in relief for the White Sox. Adcock homered
- 1:47:12in the sixth with nobody on with the second California
- 1:47:15run of the game. That was the only activity in
- 1:47:18the American League this afternoon. Yesterday,
- 1:47:20of course, Cleveland and Washington got things
- 1:47:22underway with the Indians' pinch -hitting strength
- 1:47:25showing in a 5 -2 victory over the Senators.
- 1:47:29McDowell got the victory over Rickert by Coward
- 1:47:31-Homer. Now I'll be back in just one minute with
- 1:47:35scores of games played today in the National

- 1:48:41National League this afternoon. It's not yet
- 1:48:43underway, and that's at Candlestick Park, where
- 1:48:45the Chicago Cubs go with Jackson against 22 -game
- 1:48:49winner Marichal. And that one, as I said, not
- 1:48:51yet underway. The Mets and Cincinnati Reds got
- 1:48:54rained out for the second day in a row, and that
- 1:48:56rainout was a rescheduled game from yesterday.
- 1:48:58It's the first time since the year 1913 that
- 1:49:01the Reds have not been able to play a home opener.
- 1:49:04Pittsburgh plays Atlanta tonight. In the Georgia
- 1:49:07capital, it's the first major league game in
- 1:49:09history, a regular season game in Atlanta. Veal,
- 1:49:13a 17 -game winner, goes for the Pirates, and
- 1:49:1524 -game victor, Tony Cloninger, for the Braves.
- 1:49:20Philadelphia's Phillies will shoot 19 -game winner
- 1:49:22Jim Bunning against the St. Louis Cardinals at
- 1:49:25Busch Stadium. Bob Gibson, a 20 -game victor,
- 1:49:27goes for the Redbirds. And at Chavez Ravine,
- 1:49:32ageless Robin Roberts will hurl for the Houston
- 1:49:35Astros. He was 5 -2 last year. And Claude Osteen
- 1:49:39for the Dodgers, a 15 -game winner. That's the
- 1:49:41National League scoreboard. Here at Metropolitan
- 1:49:44Stadium today, the American League champions
- 1:49:45got off with a flying victory. For them, a heartbreaking
- 1:49:49loss for Catfish Hunter. He deserved a better
- 1:49:52fate. With two out in the third inning, from
- 1:49:55that point on, he retired 16 men in a row. Allowed
- 1:49:58only four hits in eight full innings, walked
- 1:50:01two, and stuck out two. Jim Grant went all the
- 1:50:04way for the victory. The 1 -1 game broken up
- 1:50:07in the ninth inning when Versailles walked. Only
- 1:50:09the second pass given. since in the ballgame
- 1:50:12by Hunter, he walked Hall in the second. Versailles
- 1:50:17went to second on a wild pitch, and Val Espino
- 1:50:19singled a right field to bring him in. A's run
- 1:50:22came in the fourth when Hershberger tripled and
- 1:50:24brought in by a Bill Bryan infield out. Be with
