Speaker 4: Big Events Happening Thursday night, starts at six at a
• 2:15
Speaker 4: Little Creek Country Club in South Charleston, the fourteenth annual
• 2:17
Speaker 4: Kicking Cancer fundraiser, brought to you by Better Holmes and
• 2:21
Speaker 4: Gardens Real Estate chumchil Here to talk about it, Josh
• 2:23
Speaker 4: Scott and Margaret Osborne.
• 2:24
Speaker 6: How you doing, good morning.
• 2:26
Speaker 4: Thank you for both for me. Now now again. With
• 2:28
Speaker 4: your company, everybody is named Josh.
• 2:30
Speaker 6: Right, yes, yes, we have a couple except me.
• 2:33
Speaker 4: Okay, well no that's what I said, because yeah, we
• 2:35
Speaker 4: originally had one of the other josh Is scheduled and
• 2:37
Speaker 4: you stepped up to the plate and I said, you
• 2:40
Speaker 4: will be known as Josh from that point on.
• 2:42
  Speaker 6: Okay it Josh.
• 2:43
Speaker 4: It's kind of like our companies with Dave's. You know,
• 2:45
Speaker 4: we got a a Jecklan, Alan Wilson h and Weekly.
• 2:50
Speaker 4: So everybody's a Dave. Everybody in your company is a Josh.
• 2:53
  Speaker 2: That's it.
• 2:54
Speaker 4: That's it, all right, talk about the event, give us
• 2:56
Speaker 4: to the overview, and then we'll break down specifically either
• 2:58
  Speaker 4: one of you.
• 2:58
Speaker 7: Well, we we raised money for cancer. Obviously, it's kicking
• 3:01
Speaker 7: cancer and it goes towards the people in our company
• 3:04
Speaker 7: and their families. And like Josh said earlier, I love
• 3:07
Speaker 7: that he said this. We help so many families get
• 3:09
Speaker 7: into homes and you know, put them in positions to
• 3:12
Speaker 7: better themselves. So we're just asking the community to help
• 3:14
  Speaker 7: us as well.
• 3:15
  Speaker 4: I mean, that's it's about. It's kind of a cliche,
• 3:18
Speaker 4: but it's about giving back. Yeah, that's exactly what it is.
• 3:21
Speaker 8: This thing is go ahead to say, as a company,
• 3:23
Speaker 8: we try to give back all year long, and you know,
• 3:25
Speaker 8: this is the one time of year we ask our customers,
• 3:28
Speaker 8: our family, our affiliates to help us.
• 3:30
Speaker 4: So this has been going on, I think for fourteen years.
• 3:32
Speaker 4: I'm not sure that you guys have been involved in
• 3:34
Speaker 4: the entire time, but.
• 3:35
Speaker 6: Quite that long. But I know the history of it
• 3:37
Speaker 6: started out as a spaghetti dinner.
• 3:38
Speaker 4: Okay, one simple spaghetti dinner.
• 3:40
Speaker 8: Take it from there, yep, and it's turned into you know,
• 3:43
Speaker 8: we'll have the whole upstairs of the Little Creek Country Club.
• 3:46
Speaker 8: We've got food, drink, we've got DJ killer, Killer Killer,
• 3:51
Speaker 8: silent auction. We've got everything from paid airbnb, states, unique
• 3:56
Speaker 8: spots all over the state. We've got a scenic small
• 4:00
Speaker 8: airplane ride around Charleston so you can see the city
• 4:02
Speaker 8: from about fifteen hundred feet.
• 4:04
Speaker 6: And last year we had killer luggage. We have all
• 4:07
  Speaker 6: kinds of stuff.
• 4:08
Speaker 7: It's so much fun with food, drinks, music, dancing. You
• 4:12
  Speaker 7: can't you can't be dead.
• 4:13
Speaker 4: I mean, it's as you said, this thing's been going
• 4:15
Speaker 4: on for fourteen years, and I just think it's amazing
• 4:17
Speaker 4: when you say that somebody had an idea at one point,
• 4:19
Speaker 4: let's have a spaghetti dinner, and then it turned into this.
• 4:22
Speaker 4: I mean, I mean, how many people attend this thing?
• 4:24
Speaker 7: I mean hundreds, hundreds.
• 4:26
Speaker 6: We're pushing about two hundred now.
• 4:28
Speaker 8: Last year we were playing around one eighty and uh
• 4:30
Speaker 8: and we're doing better and better every year. We've we've
• 4:33
Speaker 8: kind of changed how some of the stuff operates. We've
• 4:35
Speaker 8: pulled in some help, and we're this is the biggest
• 4:40
Speaker 8: funds we've raised yet this so far for this.
• 4:42
Speaker 4: And talk about how the funds are utilized. You've touched
• 4:45
Speaker 4: on a little bit, but how the horror funds utilized.
• 4:47
Speaker 7: So people that are affected by it that are directly
• 4:50
Speaker 7: related to us and the families and the company. They'll
• 4:53
Speaker 7: send a letter in and then the committee votes on
• 4:55
Speaker 7: it and then we just like get the funds that way.
• 4:57
Speaker 8: It might be the sister of an agent, it might
• 4:59
Speaker 8: be the son or or a parent of an agent,
• 5:02
Speaker 8: or might be an affiliate with the company, you know,
• 5:05
Speaker 8: somebody that helps us lend so people can get into homes.
• 5:08
Speaker 8: So we we try to keep it close to the
• 5:10
Speaker 8: vest and help the people.
• 5:11
Speaker 4: That help us. That's what it's all about again. Uh,
• 5:14
  Speaker 4: it's a it's a fantastic event and for the social
• 5:17
Speaker 4: scene in Charleston, it's one of the bigger events too
• 5:20
Speaker 4: because it's I mean, obviously people are there because they
• 5:22
Speaker 4: want to help. But there's nothing wrong with a good time,
• 5:24
Speaker 4: especially on Thursday night, way to kick off the weekend. Yeah,
• 5:26
Speaker 4: that's right with with music and get in. You mentioned
• 5:30
Speaker 4: the auction, but let's talk about some of the party
• 5:32
  Speaker 4: aspects of it.
• 5:33
Speaker 8: We have a great djuh full dance floor set up.
• 5:36
Speaker 8: We plan to have fun for a couple hours and
• 5:38
Speaker 8: uh and make the best of it.
• 5:41
Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think it's great again because the way
• 5:45
Speaker 4: that you're doing this, because this is it's kind of
• 5:47
Speaker 4: a unique thing, uh to to. I mean, we hear
• 5:50
Speaker 4: about raising money for cancer all the time, and that's
• 5:53
Speaker 4: that's all well and good, but this is you're helping
• 5:55
Speaker 4: individuals here through this talk about that.
• 5:58
Speaker 8: Well, funds can go to anything from housing to medication treatment,
• 6:04
Speaker 8: even just groceries to help you get through the week,
• 6:06
Speaker 8: you know, if you can't get out and about Uh,
• 6:08
Speaker 8: most of our agents that will sponsor someone or nominate
• 6:13
Speaker 8: them for help, you know, will take the funds, go
• 6:15
Speaker 8: buy groceries and deliver them. So it's it's all, you know,
• 6:19
Speaker 8: the family aspect to help those that continue to help us.
• 6:23
Speaker 4: And I think so often again, you know, cancer is
• 6:25
Speaker 4: one of those things that touches everybody's life. I mean,
• 6:27
Speaker 4: you know, every family, regardless of income or cancer, can
• 6:31
Speaker 4: and care who you are. You're exactly right about that,
• 6:33
Speaker 4: and there's so much that goes into it other than
• 6:37
Speaker 4: I'm not trying to diminish it other than just the care.
• 6:40
Speaker 4: I mean, because and when and let's face it, in
• 6:42
  Speaker 4: a in a family, if you're a close knit family,
• 6:45
Speaker 4: when one person has cancer, everybody has cancer. I know
• 6:49
Speaker 4: that's a very that's a very dark way to put it,
• 6:52
Speaker 4: because there's appointments that have to be gotten to and
• 6:55
Speaker 4: other people have to pick up the slack. If there's
• 6:57
Speaker 4: something you know that somebody is not able to be
• 7:00
Speaker 4: to contribute as much as they want to to a
• 7:01
Speaker 4: family and things of that nature. And well, I just think,
• 7:05
Speaker 4: hats off to you guys for doing this. I mean,
• 7:06
Speaker 4: it's a great event. And give us a couple of
• 7:11
Speaker 4: without mentioning names, of course, give us a couple of
• 7:13
Speaker 4: success stories that you have seen with this over the years.
• 7:17
Speaker 4: And I know, I know there's been hundreds, but I mean, yeah,
• 7:19
  Speaker 4: now we.
• 7:20
Speaker 7: Two, for example, we have I would say about one
• 7:23
Speaker 7: hundred and seventy agents and if you think about their families,
• 7:26
Speaker 7: how many people are actually directly affected by this? I
• 7:29
Speaker 7: would say every year unfortunately, but also fortunately we've been
• 7:32
Speaker 7: able to step in and help them. So I mean
• 7:34
Speaker 7: it's a common thing that happens, like I said, yearly.
• 7:37
Speaker 6: Yeah, we're lucky enough to have not had to say
• 7:39
  Speaker 6: no so far.
• 7:39
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 7:40
Speaker 6: Yeah, the funds tend to hold out.
• 7:43
Speaker 8: You know, We've got a lot of real estate attorneys
• 7:46
Speaker 8: around town, lenders, bankers, insurance agents, and they all take
• 7:51
Speaker 8: time and money out of their pockets to put into
• 7:54
Speaker 8: our coffers to help the people that have been a
• 7:56
Speaker 8: client of theirs at some point in time possibly.
• 7:58
Speaker 4: And it's one of the great things I love about
• 8:00
Speaker 4: all of well West Virginia in general, you know, is
• 8:03
Speaker 4: we're such giving people, and when something like this is happening,
• 8:07
Speaker 4: I mean usually, yeah, you'll reach out to some people
• 8:10
Speaker 4: and say can you help. But a lot of times
• 8:12
Speaker 4: it's been my experience in different charitable things that you
• 8:14
Speaker 4: will have somebody call you and say, hey, I heard
• 8:17
Speaker 4: about this, how can I get an.
• 8:18
Speaker 8: Absolutely, we definitely have that, and you're absolutely right, A.
• 8:21
Speaker 8: It's it's definitely the Mountain State mentality, you know. I know,
• 8:25
Speaker 8: I help a lot of people move here from out
• 8:26
Speaker 8: of state, and it's funny when I hear Last year,
• 8:30
Speaker 8: I had a guy move from Florida and his buddy
• 8:32
Speaker 8: helped him move, like physically helped me move. And he
• 8:34
Speaker 8: came up and he said, I'm I'm gonna put my
• 8:36
Speaker 8: house in the market at Florida.
• 8:37
Speaker 6: I'm moving up here.
• 8:38
Speaker 8: He's like, I can walk down the street and people
• 8:39
Speaker 8: will actually see hello.
• 8:40
Speaker 4: To me, you actually know your neighbors.
• 8:42
Speaker 8: Well, I mean, he was just shocked that people would
• 8:44
Speaker 8: would look at him and and and nod and say hello,
• 8:46
Speaker 8: good morning. So yeah, that's that's definitely the mentality we
• 8:49
Speaker 8: like to have to try to help our help people
• 8:52
Speaker 8: that are in our circles.
• 8:53
Speaker 4: And again you, I mean you're you guys are a
• 8:55
Speaker 4: great company, and your hats off to you for doing this,
• 8:57
Speaker 4: but you wouldn't be able to pull this thing off
• 8:59
Speaker 4: by yourself off. I mean, I got to be able
• 9:01
Speaker 4: to have all to talk about some of the you know,
• 9:03
Speaker 4: mentioned names specifically, but you mentioned other people in the community,
• 9:06
Speaker 4: insurance attorneys and things of that nature, talk about the
• 9:08
Speaker 4: help that they've been able to provide.
• 9:09
Speaker 8: Well, it's nothing for our affiliates to drop what they're doing.
• 9:12
Speaker 8: I know, we'll have a couple that are on the
• 9:13
Speaker 8: committee with us that will drop everything they're doing Thursday
• 9:16
Speaker 8: and come help us get ready to decorate.
• 9:18
  Speaker 2: You know.
• 9:18
Speaker 8: Yeah, we don't have to pay anybody to do anything.
• 9:20
Speaker 8: We've got lots of volunteer.
• 9:21
Speaker 7: Help and they'll be starting first thing in the morning
• 9:23
Speaker 7: on Thursday to get ready and they'll have to stay
• 9:25
  Speaker 7: after And.
• 9:26
Speaker 4: Yeah, do you still need volunteers for that, because I
• 9:28
Speaker 4: mean what happens a lot of times is people and
• 9:30
Speaker 4: I spent a lot of time talking about these community
• 9:32
Speaker 4: service things like this. People will say, well, I'd really
• 9:34
Speaker 4: like to get involved, but I for one reason another
• 9:37
Speaker 4: I can't be there that night, or I can't you know,
• 9:39
Speaker 4: I'm not in a financial situation to be able to
• 9:42
Speaker 4: do that. There's some ways you can help beyond.
• 9:44
Speaker 7: Them if anyone's wanting to volunteer. If we can't find
• 9:47
Speaker 7: a space for it, thish for this direct event this year.
• 9:50
Speaker 7: We will absolutely find room or something to help for
• 9:52
Speaker 7: next year because it's a yearly thing and we're not
• 9:55
  Speaker 7: going to say.
• 9:55
  Speaker 6: No to help.
• 9:56
Speaker 8: Well, and we're active all year long as a company,
• 9:58
Speaker 8: so you know, we do a lot of stuff. Yeah,
• 10:01
Speaker 8: if people would like to give back and find a
• 10:02
Speaker 8: way to do that, we can find a place for him.
• 10:04
Speaker 8: We're blessed in this event to have tons and tons
• 10:07
Speaker 8: of help, so I think we're good there. But like
• 10:10
Speaker 8: Margaret said, we can find a place for your help
• 10:12
  Speaker 8: if that's.
• 10:13
Speaker 4: What you'd like to do, All right, give us the
• 10:16
Speaker 4: overall let's go back to the beginning on the time,
• 10:19
Speaker 4: the place, how to get tickets, and so on and
• 10:21
  Speaker 4: so forth.
• 10:21
Speaker 7: It will be Little Creek Country Club, Country Club. I
• 10:25

Speaker 4: Want to welcome in now Morgan Tending from the Putnam
• 14:17
Speaker 4: County Development Authority. Good morning and welcome to the show.
• 14:21
Speaker 13: Good morning, Dave Allen. How are you.
• 14:23
Speaker 4: I am doing fine, Thank you for being here. We're
• 14:25
Speaker 4: going to get to some Putnam County things coming up
• 14:27
Speaker 4: here momentarily, but I did want to give you a
• 14:29
Speaker 4: chance to talk about remarks that you gave on behalf
• 14:34
Speaker 4: of the West Virginia Economic Development Council at the Capitol yesterday.
• 14:39
Speaker 4: What exactly did you tell them?
• 14:43
Speaker 13: So I spoke on behalf of the West Virginia Economic
• 14:45
Speaker 13: Development Council and day. For those who don't know, that's
• 14:48
Speaker 13: a professional membership across West Virginia that is connecting anybody
• 14:54
Speaker 13: interested in economic development, whether it's public or private sector.
• 14:58
Speaker 13: So we presented to the Development Committee on Joint Committee
• 15:02
Speaker 13: for the Legislature last night and basically reminded them of
• 15:06
Speaker 13: who West Virginia ADC is, who are membership entails, and
• 15:10
Speaker 13: also gave them what our priorities are as economic developers
• 15:15
Speaker 13: going into the twenty twenty six legislative session. So it
• 15:19
Speaker 13: was a great highlight and we had some great discussion,
• 15:23
Speaker 13: and it was really great to have that receipt of
• 15:27
Speaker 13: information from our delegates and senators and what's important to
• 15:31
Speaker 13: us in economic development and.
• 15:33
Speaker 4: Let's talk about what some of those policies that you
• 15:35
Speaker 4: want to see and are some of the things that
• 15:37
Speaker 4: are important to you get into that.
• 15:40
Speaker 13: So we've sent on a survey to our members and
• 15:43
Speaker 13: like I mentioned, we have over two hundred organizations are
• 15:46
Speaker 13: represented in our membership, and we asked everybody, Okay, what
• 15:51
Speaker 13: are your priorities? What do you want to see our
• 15:53
Speaker 13: senators and delegates working on in economic development? And the
• 15:58
Speaker 13: top two for local economic development funding and site readiness funding.
• 16:05
Speaker 13: So the first is basically how the state helped support
• 16:10
Speaker 13: local economic development authorities like my day job, Dave at
• 16:14
Speaker 13: Putnam County Development Authority. Most people don't realize that economic
• 16:18
Speaker 13: development organizations do not have a dedicated funding stream. We're
• 16:22
Speaker 13: all made up differently and we all have to find
• 16:24
Speaker 13: our own way of funding our organizations. Some of us
• 16:29
Speaker 13: are public, some of us are private, but we all
• 16:33
Speaker 13: apply for a grant to the state where we're able
• 16:37
Speaker 13: to get a matching fund each year. And we've had
• 16:41
Speaker 13: that around for about thirty years. It's called the Local
• 16:44
Speaker 13: Economic Development Grant. But that was actually the number one
• 16:47
Speaker 13: concern of our members, regardless of if they were a
• 16:51
Speaker 13: local development authority or if they were a private industry,
• 16:54
Speaker 13: or they were state or federal government. And in that
• 16:58
Speaker 13: amount for the first time increased quite a bit last
• 17:02
Speaker 13: year to forty one thousand dollars, and then it dropped
• 17:06
Speaker 13: back down this year and this year's budget to twenty
• 17:08
Speaker 13: two thousand dollars. And again I said, that's matching. So
• 17:12
Speaker 13: that's a twenty two thousand dollars grant for each county
• 17:16
Speaker 13: of West Virginia that they can apply for and they
• 17:18
Speaker 13: have to have another twenty two thousand dollars to match it.
• 17:22
Speaker 4: Todd again. Morgan Tenning from the put McGinnity Development Authority
• 17:25
Speaker 4: and also representing the West Virginia Economic Development Council, who
• 17:28
Speaker 4: she gave remarks yesterday to the interim committees there to Capitol.
• 17:32
Speaker 4: What does you talked about the survey that you that
• 17:36
Speaker 4: you sent out but to somebody, as you said, your
• 17:37
Speaker 4: day job, who does economic development for living independent of
• 17:43
Speaker 4: this council? Give us an overall on the economic status
• 17:47
Speaker 4: of West Virginia. What are you seeing out there? Good things?
• 17:51
Speaker 4: Things we need to work on. I mean, I'm talking
• 17:53
Speaker 4: about you as an economic development person yourself.
• 17:56
Speaker 13: Sure so, I mean in Putnam County we are booming
• 17:59
Speaker 13: and jokes that we're going to have to change our
• 18:01
Speaker 13: slogan to sold out pretty soon. The system. What's growth
• 18:06
Speaker 13: and we're running out of land. But I think what
• 18:09
Speaker 13: you're seeing across the board is over the last several years,
• 18:13
Speaker 13: we've won some really big economic development investments in West Virginia,
• 18:17
Speaker 13: and that's a huge win, regardless of which county want
• 18:21
Speaker 13: it or where you live. And what we're seeing from
• 18:24
Speaker 13: that nowadays is kind of the snowball effect that happens
• 18:29
Speaker 13: after you do win an investment. It's when you realize
• 18:32
Speaker 13: that you need more people for the jobs that are here.
• 18:37
Speaker 13: You need more homes for those people, you need more
• 18:39
Speaker 13: childcare for those people, you need more health care for
• 18:42
Speaker 13: those people. You have more children that are going to
• 18:45
Speaker 13: end up going into the school system. But I think,
• 18:48
Speaker 13: especially here in Putnam County, we're definitely seeing that downstream
• 18:52
Speaker 13: effect of winning economic development investments, and now we're having
• 18:57
Speaker 13: to kind of build up the foundation to be able
• 19:01
Speaker 13: to support having those types of winds in our backyard.
• 19:07
Speaker 4: And I think sometimes you're absolutely right about that. I mean,
• 19:10
Speaker 4: we all love to hear these big economic development announcements,
• 19:12
Speaker 4: no matter whether it's in Putnam County or wherever it's
• 19:15
Speaker 4: happening in West Virginia. You love to hear these things.
• 19:17
Speaker 4: But then once you get them and I know, you
• 19:20
Speaker 4: do a whole lot of work before you ever, you know,
• 19:22
Speaker 4: put it out there to try to get it. But
• 19:23
Speaker 4: then that's when that's when the real work begins. I mean,
• 19:27
Speaker 4: it's all real work, but I mean that's when you
• 19:29
Speaker 4: really got to get to it. Because Okay, we got
• 19:31
Speaker 4: people coming here. I mean, look at New Core, I
• 19:33
Speaker 4: mean just one county over. We had the Invent announcement
• 19:36
Speaker 4: last week, which we'll we'll get to that a little
• 19:37
Speaker 4: bit later on. These people are coming and sometimes, you know,
• 19:41
Speaker 4: we do our best to try to be prepared for it,
• 19:45
Speaker 4: but there's influxes of people that are that are coming
• 19:49
Speaker 4: in and you've got to.
• 19:49
Speaker 13: Be ready for it, absolutely, and we have to have
• 19:53
Speaker 13: a trained work force.
• 19:54
  Speaker 14: You know.
• 19:54
Speaker 13: One of the things that we've worked on here at
• 19:56
Speaker 13: Kundam County Development Authority is in addistive called home Kown
• 19:59
Speaker 13: Advantage was the Panic School system because we realized that
• 20:03
Speaker 13: a lot of our young people and their parents think
• 20:06
Speaker 13: they have to leave the state for a good paying job,
• 20:08
Speaker 13: and that's just not the reality. We have opportunities here,
• 20:12
Speaker 13: it's just not the opportunities that people are thinking about.
• 20:15
Speaker 13: And you mentioned Invent perfect example, So for those who
• 20:18
Speaker 13: don't know. Invent made an expansion announcement last week and
• 20:22
Speaker 13: that company is formerly known here locally as Park Line
• 20:27
Speaker 13: over an Eleanor Industrial Park. Wonderful home grown company, and
• 20:33
Speaker 13: they made an announcement last week that they want an
• 20:35
Speaker 13: expansion internally in their Invent company globally and they have
• 20:41
Speaker 13: to hire one hundred people in the next six to
• 20:44
Speaker 13: ten months. That's an astronomical amount of people to try
• 20:49
Speaker 13: to source locally. But maybe people aren't thinking that they
• 20:53
Speaker 13: can go into things like that. You know, there are options,
• 20:56
Speaker 13: So we are trying to communicate to the school system
• 21:01
Speaker 13: into our community that there are jobs available. It just
• 21:04
Speaker 13: may not be what you thought you were going to
• 21:06
Speaker 13: grow up to be. Let me put it out.
• 21:08
Speaker 4: Yeah, well you're right about that. And it's again, the
• 21:11
Speaker 4: focus has has changed so much. And I've talked about
• 21:14
Speaker 4: this on the show Morgan numerous times. You know, I'm
• 21:18
Speaker 4: from the generation you know somebody who graduated high school
• 21:21
Speaker 4: in eighteen eighties they said, okay, you know, everybody's going
• 21:24
Speaker 4: to go off to college. And look, there's I mean
• 21:26
Speaker 4: nothing wrong with setting your sights on WVU Marshall, you
• 21:31
Speaker 4: see state whatever it is. But the reality is is
• 21:35
Speaker 4: that that's not for everyone, and that there are opportunities
• 21:40
Speaker 4: available out there, good paying jobs in other fields. That
• 21:44
Speaker 4: means one's bigger, better than the other. It just means
• 21:46
Speaker 4: that it's different. And I love the fact. And I
• 21:49
Speaker 4: know you've got some stuff going on with Bridge Valley,
• 21:51
Speaker 4: which I'm going to get to momentarily, and they're one
• 21:52
Speaker 4: of the sponsors of this show, and I have doctor
• 21:54
Speaker 4: Casey Saxevillbridge Valley on the show a couple of times
• 21:56
Speaker 4: a month to talk about I love that institutions and
• 21:58
Speaker 4: not just hers or not Bridge Valley, but there are
• 22:01
Speaker 4: institutions like that that are really looking at this sort
• 22:04
Speaker 4: of thing now and saying, hey, we're going to need welders,
• 22:07
Speaker 4: We're going to need you know, coders, We're going to
• 22:09
Speaker 4: need all these things that modern businesses need once we
• 22:12
Speaker 4: get these economic development announcements made for our areas.
• 22:17
Speaker 13: Absolutely, and I loved that you mentioned Bridge Valley just
• 22:21
Speaker 13: now and actually before I came on, because we work
• 22:24
Speaker 13: with them quite a bit. I mean, we we actually
• 22:27
Speaker 13: did an event last Friday that we co hosted with
• 22:30
Speaker 13: Bridge Valley at their Toyota Hall Advanced Technology Center. We
• 22:34
Speaker 13: brought in one hundred and fifty students from Kennall and
• 22:36
Speaker 13: Putnam Counties and took them through Toyota Hall for all
• 22:40
Speaker 13: these different exhibits where they got to learn about PLCs
• 22:43
Speaker 13: and pneumatics and robotics, just trying to expose our young
• 22:47
Speaker 13: talent to a career in STEM because there's so many
• 22:51
Speaker 13: job opportunities. And then we also had employers present who
• 22:55
Speaker 13: would love to hire those young people when they graduate
• 22:58
Speaker 13: high school. We have Toyota there, we have Service Fire,
• 23:02
Speaker 13: we had Montara, and you know, that's also why we
• 23:05
Speaker 13: started that apprenticeship program called Same with Toyota, because Toyota
• 23:09
Speaker 13: recognized that they had a very alarmingly large amount of
• 23:14
Speaker 13: our maintenance team that could retire at any point in time,
• 23:17
Speaker 13: and they didn't have much of a generation coming in
• 23:20
Speaker 13: behind that. So, as you mentioned, you know, we've kind
• 23:24
Speaker 13: of pushed for something different for so many decades that
• 23:28
Speaker 13: now we have this shortage in STEM and working with
• 23:32
Speaker 13: your hands, and there's so many great opportunities for those
• 23:36
Speaker 13: who want to do that. And then, honestly, you know,
• 23:40
Speaker 13: we've seen some people who started in production and then
• 23:42
Speaker 13: they realized they wanted to upscale, and then they go
• 23:44
Speaker 13: to a bridge Valley or another communities. At college they
• 23:47
Speaker 13: get their associates degree and then maybe later on they
• 23:50
Speaker 13: go to Marshall or WU and they actually complete an
• 23:52
Speaker 13: engineering degree. So this is not like a one stop shop.
• 23:55
Speaker 13: If you go into a technical trade. There are plenty
• 23:59
Speaker 13: of options. A high of you on your post to
• 24:02
Speaker 13: a successful career here in West Virginia.
• 24:04
Speaker 4: Talking to Morgan Tenny, you gave a Dave Allen showing
• 24:06
Speaker 4: five eighty Live is brought to you in part by
• 24:08
Speaker 4: Pinnacle Consultants. Pinnacle offers a four phase assessment for your properties. Inspection, sampling,
• 24:12
Speaker 4: now analysis, comprehensive reporting, and management planning. Checkout Pinnacle Corp
• 24:16
Speaker 4: dot net. Because what you don't know can hurt you.
• 24:19
Speaker 4: Now you've got a resident is called a residential contractor
• 24:24
Speaker 4: Connect event coming up right? Talk about that?
• 24:28
Speaker 13: Yeah, that's fun. We love hosting events. I've just mentioned
• 24:32
Speaker 13: several since being on here, but we have an upcoming
• 24:36
Speaker 13: event this Friday, Residential Contractor Connect Event. We are hosting
• 24:42
Speaker 13: a speed networking event for local residential subcontractors to have
• 24:47
Speaker 13: an interest in working with Ward Communities. Ward Communities is
• 24:51
Speaker 13: who we announced earlier. This year's day is going to
• 24:55
Speaker 13: be building a more than four hundred unit housing development
• 24:58
Speaker 13: and Hurricane. They are a large company that is going
• 25:02
Speaker 13: to be coming in and building those units, but they
• 25:05
Speaker 13: want to work with as many local subcontractors as possible.
• 25:09
Speaker 13: They would love to come into our community and be
• 25:11
Speaker 13: a part of the community. So we asked them if
• 25:15
Speaker 13: we could host an event and they said yes. We
• 25:19
Speaker 13: have over one hundred local companies who have signed up
• 25:24
Speaker 13: to meet one on one with a Ward Community's representative
• 25:28
Speaker 13: this Friday, and we have so many that we've actually
• 25:31
Speaker 13: added more Ward Communities members, so we actually do still
• 25:35
Speaker 13: have a few slots left. If anybody has interest, they
• 25:37
Speaker 13: can call our office three zero four seven five to
• 25:41
Speaker 13: seven oh three one eight and sign up.
• 25:44
Speaker 4: Still, but where's the event. Where's the event going to
• 25:47
  Speaker 4: be morgan?
• 25:48
Speaker 13: It's going to be a Putnam Career and Technical Center
• 25:50
Speaker 13: because we love CCTV over in Eleanor, so this is
• 25:56
Speaker 13: going to be an opportunity and we love that we're
• 25:58
Speaker 13: getting to be that conduit between local subcontractors and a
• 26:03
Speaker 13: company that we've attracted to come to the area. So
• 26:06
Speaker 13: we're really hoping that our local subs take advantage of
• 26:09
Speaker 13: this opportunity. They're getting FaceTime and they have a shot
• 26:13
Speaker 13: at being a part of this really large development coming
• 26:16
  Speaker 13: to Hurricane.
• 26:17
Speaker 4: And this is when this announcement came out of a
• 26:21
Speaker 4: few weeks ago about this massive housing development that was
• 26:24
Speaker 4: going to be coming to Hurricane and how many what
• 26:26
Speaker 4: was the number again approximately how many homes are coming?
• 26:29
Speaker 13: More than four hundred units.
• 26:31
Speaker 4: More than four hundred units are coming. And one of
• 26:33
Speaker 4: the first things that we ask and I appreciate people
• 26:36
Speaker 4: asking about this, was how many jobs are is this
• 26:39
Speaker 4: going to create for people to build and to help,
• 26:42
Speaker 4: you know, contractors of various things with this. And I
• 26:45
Speaker 4: love the fact that this company is saying we want
• 26:48
Speaker 4: to work with local people, as you said, So to
• 26:51
Speaker 4: answer that question, there's going to be a lot of
• 26:54
Speaker 4: local people Putnam, Kanawa County, Mason County, Jackson County, all
• 26:58
Speaker 4: in this area that are going to be in employed
• 27:00
Speaker 4: in building these four hundred and some on homes.
• 27:03
Speaker 13: Yes, and I'm so thankful for word communities. They're going
• 27:06
Speaker 13: to be exhausted on Friday because they we have packed
• 27:09
Speaker 13: their day. We've told we've warned them, you're going to
• 27:12
Speaker 13: be exhausted, but we'll make sure you're well fed throughout
• 27:15
Speaker 13: the day. But they were really glad that they're willing
• 27:19
Speaker 13: to come in and meet with local subs. But you know,
• 27:23
Speaker 13: they've expressed they're really excited to be part of a
• 27:25
Speaker 13: community that wants to do business with them, that wants
• 27:29
Speaker 13: to partner with them. They don't see the development in
• 27:33
Speaker 13: Hurricane being their one and only development in not only
• 27:36
Speaker 13: Putnam County, but in West Virginia, and they want to
• 27:38
Speaker 13: become a part of our community. So I really hope
• 27:41
Speaker 13: that our local subcontractors take advantage and embrace that fact
• 27:46
Speaker 13: that they have an opportunity here to be a part
• 27:50
Speaker 13: of a very large project. Four hundred units is a
• 27:55
Speaker 13: whopper day. I don't think any of us really realize
• 27:58
Speaker 13: like how how huge that is to West Virginia and
• 28:03
Speaker 13: our community. We just don't have that many developments of
• 28:09
Speaker 13: any relative size to four hundred for us to compare.
• 28:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, you're absolutely right, we have a desperate need for homes.
• 28:16
Speaker 4: I mean that folks with I've had Taryll Ellison and
• 28:18
Speaker 4: folks from Advantage Valley on the show many many times,
• 28:20
Speaker 4: and other folks along that same realm, and they've all
• 28:25
Speaker 4: said the same thing, we got to have homes, and
• 28:27
Speaker 4: the not only you know, we're talking about Canaw Valley,
• 28:30
Speaker 4: we're talking about beyond. We we need homes, We desperately
• 28:33
  Speaker 4: need homes.
• 28:35
Speaker 13: Absolutely, and you know what follows after that, Dave. You know,
• 28:39
Speaker 13: my team is a small team of three that includes me,
• 28:42
Speaker 13: So we are doing the best that we can to

Speaker 13: drive development for Putnam County and West Virginia as a whole.
• 28:49
Speaker 13: And some people ask like, you know, why don't you
• 28:51
Speaker 13: focus on X Y Z retail. Well, our host, Dave,
• 28:56
Speaker 13: is that if we've put our time and our resources
• 28:58
Speaker 13: into the manufacturing that will bring the job, then we
• 29:02
Speaker 13: can help them with workforce development, and then we can
• 29:04
Speaker 13: help them with housing for that workforce. All the other
• 29:07
Speaker 13: ancillary businesses are going to naturally follow. They always do
• 29:11
Speaker 13: have the healthcare or retail. It's going to bring more restaurants,
• 29:15
Speaker 13: it's going to bring more stores. And although we sometimes
• 29:18
Speaker 13: have a small part in some of those things, Dave,
• 29:21
Speaker 13: it's just not our focus because of our resources. So,
• 29:24
Speaker 13: you know, we're a really small team and we know
• 29:27
Speaker 13: that if we focus on the upstream, then all of
• 29:30
Speaker 13: those other things that people want to see in terms
• 29:32
Speaker 13: of retail are going to come naturally.
• 29:35
Speaker 4: All right, before we let you go, you did mention
• 29:36
Speaker 4: some things going on to Putnam Career and Technical Center.
• 29:39
Speaker 4: You get this hometown advantage thing going on. We're going
• 29:42
Speaker 4: to be talking more about that over the next couple
• 29:43
Speaker 4: of weeks. It's a free career fair and you still
• 29:47
Speaker 4: got opportunities for people to sign up for that. Talk
• 29:50
Speaker 4: about that before we let you go.
• 29:52
Speaker 13: Yes, thank you so much. We are hosting a free

• 34:35
Speaker 4: Oh, he's listening. I'm sure he's all right. So we
• 34:38
Speaker 4: hear a lot about scams in West Virginia. And I
• 34:41
Speaker 4: know I've had folks from the AARP on, I've had
• 34:43
Speaker 4: folks with the Attorney General's Office over the years on
• 34:45
  Speaker 4: to talk about this. It's a problem, and it's a
• 34:49
Speaker 4: problem with these scams that hit all demographics, not just
• 34:52
Speaker 4: ones that you consider quote quote aarp But there's a
• 34:56
Speaker 4: special target, you know, for folks like that. What are
• 34:58
Speaker 4: you seeing out there now as far as scams go.
• 35:01
Speaker 14: Oh, Dave, we're seeing so many scams hit hit West
• 35:04
Speaker 14: Virginians and particularly older West Virginians. You may have gotten one.
• 35:08
Speaker 14: I got one just yesterday on my text. It said, oh,
• 35:11
Speaker 14: you were on the turnpike and you didn't pay your debt.
• 35:13
Speaker 4: I get a couple of those a week.
• 35:15
Speaker 14: They come all the time, and so you know they're
• 35:17
Speaker 14: only asking for three dollars, six dollars whatever it is,
• 35:19
Speaker 14: and so you think, oh, well, maybe I did run
• 35:21
Speaker 14: down Beckley and the easy pasting work. They're trying to
• 35:25
Speaker 14: get your bank account inform.
• 35:26
Speaker 4: That's what it's not about, the three dollars.
• 35:28
Speaker 14: No, once they get your banking information, then they will
• 35:31
Speaker 14: drain your bank accounts. That's a common one going around.
• 35:35
Speaker 14: There's another one going around about jury duty. They'll say
• 35:39
  Speaker 14: you missed jury.
• 35:40
  Speaker 4: That's not a new one. I mean that one's been
• 35:42
Speaker 4: around for why. It goes away and kind of comes back.
• 35:45
Speaker 14: It circulates, It circulates, and they tell you, well, we're
• 35:48
Speaker 14: going to send someone to a rescue, We're going to
• 35:50
Speaker 14: send them to your house. And the new twist is
• 35:53
Speaker 14: they ask you to pay your fine with a gift card.
• 35:57
Speaker 14: And it's because gift cards you really can't trace them
• 35:59
Speaker 14: and you're not going to track down the thief. So
• 36:02
Speaker 14: we have a saying that gift cards are presents, not payments.
• 36:07
Speaker 14: So if anyone, yeah, anyone asked you to pay with
• 36:11
Speaker 14: the gift card, something's wrong.
• 36:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, you're exactly right. And we just see so
• 36:16
Speaker 4: many of these things, and you know, these little things,
• 36:18
Speaker 4: these little computers that we carry around in our pocket
• 36:21
Speaker 4: have and everybody's connected now has made it even even easier.
• 36:26
Speaker 14: Sadly, absolutely most I think over fifty percent now of
• 36:31
Speaker 14: the scams that are perpetrated across the country are initiated
• 36:34
Speaker 14: via text. And so if you receive a text that
• 36:38
Speaker 14: has a link and they want you to click on
• 36:40
Speaker 14: it and it's from someone that you don't know, don't
• 36:44
  Speaker 14: do it.
• 36:44
Speaker 4: And you know the thing about it is. You talked
• 36:46
Speaker 4: about targeting older folks, and there's a reason for that.
• 36:51
Speaker 4: I mean, they've always been primarily the ones that were
• 36:54
Speaker 4: on the scam bull's eye, even before the Internet and
• 36:57
Speaker 4: things of that nature, because they tend to be a
• 36:59
Speaker 4: little bit more trusting and they want to see the
• 37:02
Speaker 4: you know, the good in people. That's that's one thing.
• 37:05
Speaker 4: But especially now when you add the new technology susan
• 37:08
Speaker 4: into it, then they're like, well, maybe this is the
• 37:12
Speaker 4: way they do it now. And so I think sometimes,
• 37:14
Speaker 4: I mean, you folks with AARP and others, you do
• 37:16
Speaker 4: a great job of educating people, but sometimes I think
• 37:19
Speaker 4: maybe maybe some people in the family probably need to,
• 37:23
Speaker 4: you know, educate them. You know, all right, Mom, are grandma, grandpa?
• 37:27
Speaker 4: You know, you got to watch this stuff.
• 37:29
Speaker 14: They are a target. Older people are a target because
• 37:32
Speaker 14: the scam artists think they maybe aren't technologically savvy like
• 37:36
Speaker 14: the younger people, and they have a lifetime of savings.
• 37:40
Speaker 14: They generally lose more money than the younger people in
• 37:43
Speaker 14: the scams because they have more money. They have their
• 37:46
Speaker 14: retirement funds, they have their accounts that they've spent their
• 37:49
Speaker 14: whole lives saving, and so while younger people are scammed
• 37:55
Speaker 14: more often. Older people lose more money and they aren't
• 37:58
Speaker 14: in the workforce to be able to make.
• 37:59
Speaker 4: That exactly right. Again, we're talking with Susan le Few,
• 38:02
Speaker 4: Associate State director of aarp OK. You got an event
• 38:05
Speaker 4: coming to the Marriott at Charleston. Talk about that.
• 38:08
Speaker 14: We do next Thursday, October sixteenth. It's called Operation Scam Jam,
• 38:13
Speaker 14: and we have a whole series of experts who are
• 38:16
Speaker 14: going to share tips and information on all of the
• 38:19
Speaker 14: latest scams, all of the trends in the frauds, and
• 38:23
Speaker 14: how to protect yourself things you can do, action steps
• 38:26
Speaker 14: you can take to protect yourself, your family, finances, and
• 38:30
Speaker 14: your assets from these scam artists. You know, these scam
• 38:33
Speaker 14: artists are really really good at what they do, if
• 38:36
Speaker 14: they would put half the effort into being.
• 38:39
Speaker 4: Legitimate and productive citizen exactly. How many of these scams
• 38:43
Speaker 4: that we see don't emanate from the United States. A
• 38:45
Speaker 4: lot of them, the majority of them, that's what I
• 38:48
  Speaker 4: would imagine.
• 38:48
Speaker 14: A lot of them do. A lot of them are
• 38:50
Speaker 14: from overseas. And what technology nowadays, the scam artists can
• 38:53
Speaker 14: be anywhere, yeah, anywhere in the world.
• 38:55
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, I mean, and the ability you mentioned
• 38:58
Speaker 4: the text the ability to show up with a three
• 39:00
Speaker 4: oh four area number when you're somewhere, you know, across
• 39:03
Speaker 4: the globe somewhere. I mean it shows up literally. I've
• 39:06
Speaker 4: gotten text that will say, you know, with a three
• 39:09
Speaker 4: oh four number, and even have the city on it.
• 39:10
Speaker 4: It'll say Charleston, West Virginia or whatever your hometown you
• 39:13
Speaker 4: know may be. They're nowhere near Charleston, West Virginia. There's
• 39:17
Speaker 4: somewhere else. So I mean, I was looking at your
• 39:19
Speaker 4: list of presenters that you've got. Of course, Gayleen the
• 39:22
Speaker 4: state director is going to be their friend of the program,
• 39:24
Speaker 4: Jane Marx and others. You've got folks from local from
• 39:28
Speaker 4: banking organizations. I mean, you've get some pretty heavy hitters here.
• 39:34
Speaker 14: We do. We have actually the regional vice president of AARP,
• 39:39
Speaker 14: she's coming in from Texas t Tran. We have a
• 39:43
Speaker 14: local banking panel of local bankers who can tell tell
• 39:46
Speaker 14: you how to protect your bank account. We have a
• 39:49
Speaker 14: representative of the Bureau of Senior Services who's going to
• 39:52
Speaker 14: talk about Medicare scams. Right now, we're getting ready to
• 39:56
Speaker 14: hit that open enrollment period for Medicare, and there are
• 40:00
Speaker 14: there's so many health related Medicare related scams going on
• 40:03
Speaker 14: right now. You have to be really, really careful, and
• 40:07
Speaker 14: so she's going to talk about that, and then we
• 40:10
Speaker 14: have a fraud expert from our fraud Watch network who's
• 40:14
Speaker 14: coming over from our neighboring state of Kentucky, and so
• 40:18
Speaker 14: Gary Aatkins will be coming over for that. And in addition,
• 40:22
Speaker 14: we're going to have information tables that people can visit
• 40:25
Speaker 14: from the Secretary of State, the Attorney General's Office, the
• 40:29
Speaker 14: Treasurer's Office, AARP's Tax Aid, tax Preparation Program, the Bureau
• 40:35
Speaker 14: of Senior Services. So there will be so many resources
• 40:38
Speaker 14: available for people, all right, and.
• 40:40
Speaker 4: Again it's all happening on Thursday, the sixteenth of October
• 40:43
Speaker 4: the Marriott Downtown Charleston. Explain to people how they can
• 40:47
Speaker 4: sign up and who's this open to and just give
• 40:49
Speaker 4: us all that information.
• 40:50
Speaker 14: It's open to the public, it's free. Lunch will be
• 40:53
Speaker 14: provided catered by the Marriott, so I'm sure it'll be
• 40:57
Speaker 14: the easiest way to sign up is to go our
• 40:59
Speaker 14: Facebook page. We have a link on our Facebook page,
• 41:02
Speaker 14: so if you just are on Facebook, look for AARP
• 41:05
Speaker 14: West Virginia, or you can go to AARP dot org
• 41:09
Speaker 14: slash WV and just click on events at the bottom

Speaker 14: can call. It's one eight six six two two seven

• 41:24
Speaker 14: the public and it's free, space.
• 41:26
Speaker 4: Is limited, right yeah, yeah, sure, And you want to
• 41:28
Speaker 4: you know, for headcount purposes and things of that nature,
• 41:30
Speaker 4: you probably need to let them know your covele What
• 41:32
Speaker 4: about for the people that will be setting up. You
• 41:35
Speaker 4: mentioned some of the governmental agencies and so on and
• 41:37
Speaker 4: so forth. Do you have space available if somebody would
• 41:40
Speaker 4: like to come and set up? Are you pretty much
• 41:41
  Speaker 4: limited AT's point?
• 41:42
Speaker 14: We're pretty much limited at this point. But if they

• 48:06
Speaker 4: and Jay's Jay and I've been friends for a number

Speaker 4: of years. Jay was saying to everybody that would come by,
• 48:11
Speaker 4: you know, people would make these comments like it's good

• 49:14
Speaker 4: items here well. One in particular, Daniel Woods spent yesterday
• 49:19
Speaker 4: in the court room of Judge Mary Claire Akers here
• 49:22
Speaker 4: in Charleston, focusing on the shooting near the Shawnee Sports Complex. Now,
• 49:27
Speaker 4: this story was posted of course by Daniel very very
• 49:30
Speaker 4: in depth reporting on day one in Judge Jakers's court
• 49:35
Speaker 4: room yesterday. You can read that for yourself at wv
• 49:37
Speaker 4: metronews dot com. Suits of pictures on there as well.
• 49:40
Speaker 4: Caden Brown was in court yesterday charged with wanton endangerment
• 49:45
Speaker 4: and involving a firearm after he was allegedly part of
• 49:48
Speaker 4: a drive by that happened on Smooth Avenue and Dunbar
• 49:51
Speaker 4: on that day in twenty twenty four. And again Daniel
• 49:53
Speaker 4: has a full story with full details, pictures and whatnot,
• 49:56
Speaker 4: posted at wv Metronews dot com and I will say
• 49:59
Speaker 4: that about that day. I remember, I remember it well.
• 50:02
  Speaker 4: I wasn't there. It was a Sunday afternoon and I
• 50:06
Speaker 4: was at home, you know, watching some sporting events. I uh,
• 50:09
Speaker 4: and I have to do on Sundays if I'm not working,
• 50:12
Speaker 4: which I am most Sundays.
• 50:14
  Speaker 14: Uh.
• 50:14
Speaker 4: But I just remember when the news started started hitting
• 50:19
Speaker 4: social media about that. And keep in mind, this happened
• 50:23
Speaker 4: a couple of blocks away from the Shawnee Sports Complex.
• 50:26
Speaker 4: It did not happen on the Shawnee Sports Complex. Okay,
• 50:28
Speaker 4: a couple of blocks away. Now, it did create a
• 50:30
Speaker 4: lot of issues for the Shawnee Sports Complex because of
• 50:33
Speaker 4: the people that were there, and you know, you used
• 50:35
Speaker 4: to hear gunshots and you it's kind of hard to tell,
• 50:39
Speaker 4: is this just you know, a few feet away from me.
• 50:41
Speaker 4: There are a couple of blocks away from me.
• 50:43
  Speaker 20: Uh.
• 50:44
Speaker 4: And that's the just what the whole court case is about.
• 50:47
Speaker 4: But it did not happen at the Shawnee Sports Complex.
• 50:50
Speaker 4: But old brother, if you were following social media that day,
• 50:54
Speaker 4: you would have thinked, you would have thought that it did.
• 50:57
Speaker 4: And I have often said that, and this has really
• 51:01
Speaker 4: nothing to do with the case. And I'm sure justice
• 51:03
Speaker 4: will prevail one way or the other. But I have
• 51:05
Speaker 4: often said this with our issue with social media, there
• 51:09
Speaker 4: is so much misinformation out there, and this day was
• 51:13
Speaker 4: a good example. By the time that I first saw
• 51:16
Speaker 4: it hit, you know, and I just you know, it
• 51:19
Speaker 4: said shooting near, never said near. It never said at
• 51:24
Speaker 4: the Shawnee Sports Complex near by the time it was
• 51:28
Speaker 4: all said and done, and you know, you give it
• 51:30
Speaker 4: thirty minutes, I was at the complex and I saw
• 51:33
Speaker 4: the shooting on the Pitcher's mound or something like that,
• 51:36
  Speaker 4: and you're just like, that's that's that's not what happened
• 51:41
Speaker 4: at all. But anyway, and when those things happen, leave
• 51:46
Speaker 4: the reporting up to the professionals. Okay, I'm not a
• 51:49
  Speaker 4: professional reporter. I'm not a newsgap, but I don't know
• 51:52
Speaker 4: what I am. But leave the reporting to the professionals.
• 51:55
Speaker 4: That's all I'm saying. The court case continues and Daniel
• 51:58
Speaker 4: Woods is in the court room.
• 51:59
  Speaker 19: TJ.
• 52:00
Speaker 4: Meadows getting ready for vacation, aren't you, my friend? Yeah,
• 52:03
Speaker 4: could take some time off already. I mean, you don't
• 52:06
Speaker 4: need an excuse to wear the vacation shirt, but you
• 52:09
Speaker 4: got to hear it all the time you wear it.
