Transcript
- 0:02SPEAKER_01: Finally we figured it out.
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: Back again.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: Back again.
- 0:07SPEAKER_01: Not recording a podcast for eight months as a drawback.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Mike Blitz.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Mike Wade, my co-host, right next to me.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Mike White, what's up, dude?
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: What's up, man?
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Coming at you here in short pump.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Here in the household.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: In short pump, the land of mauls.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: It's so good to be here.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: So good to be back.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: We have taken a hiatus, obviously.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: 2025 season is right around the door.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Very excited to be back talking college football.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: Um summer is over.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Summer is over.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: So, really quick, let's do the thing.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: Eight months.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: What's what's new with you?
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Um, kids are grown up.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, we got a new car.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: And yeah, that's it.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Um, what can I say?
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Kids are grown up, same cars.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: And uh, my birthday's a couple weeks, so that's cool.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, and uh, yeah, I guess that's probably about it for the catch up.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: So man, we had a lot going on.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: A lot going on this summer.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Man, as the world turns, uh, just keep things, things never be the same.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, so um, welcome back.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: It's the first episode.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: We're uh obviously a little behind schedule this year.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: As you can tell, we're really busy.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: Life catches up.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: We're gonna do kind of two things today.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: We're gonna do our preseason uh kind of preview.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: We're gonna do a bunch of picks, talk about things we like, some hot takes, some Heisman, some unranked to ranked, some national championship, that type of thing.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: And then we're gonna throw in a little bit of week zero, which is pretty skimped.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: There's not a lot yeah.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: Week one, tons of action, lots of stuff to look forward to.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Week zero, just a nibble, just barely an appetizer.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: A nibble, just a little bit to get you excited about, but not a lot, but they're gonna do it.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: So uh let's let's go ahead and jump right in.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Um, so we're gonna talk right about well, first we want to talk about is bold predictions.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: We talk every year about things that are going to happen, and I'm just gonna piss off Mike right at the gate with my first bold prediction of the season.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Florida is gonna win 10 games in 2025 regular season.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: Okay, I don't hate that, and I was actually saving my Florida take for later in the show because you had a specific question about coaches on the hot seat.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Yes, here's the thing Billy Napier, not a good coach.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: DJ Lagway, excellent quarterback.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: Yes, they've got a ton of talent, as Florida always does.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: Um, so they're gonna go, big shocker here, as DJ Lagway goes.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's already hurt going into the year.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I saw that.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: And he's gonna carry a lot of the load on his shoulders.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: I don't hate this take, but I don't think it happens.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go punt on the take.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: Punt on the take.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: But I see what got you there.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: I think Billy Napier gets in his own way too much.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: We saw it time and time again last year.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: He does, he just makes bad coaching mistakes, and I don't think the talent of DJ Lagway and Crewe is enough to overcome that.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: They've got a really good offensive line.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Slaughter's the off is an outstanding center, I believe he plays, and they've got a lot of things going for them.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: This has been, you know, this is year four.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: This is year four of Napier coming back from UL.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: And the first two years, really disasters.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: I really don't want this stake to happen, but I want it because if if this 10 wins happens, it probably means he beats your vols and my tigers, realistically.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: And so at least the first I can say, I did it.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: So I'm kind of reverb.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: My point is, I'm trying to reverse chinx myself out of this one.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: I really don't want it to happen, but I think it might.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I I don't think it's gonna happen, but I don't think it's gonna be too far off.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: As long as DJ Lagway stays healthy, I think they can definitely get in that range.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: But they've also got a really tough schedule.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: So they've got LSU, they've got Miami, they've got Texas, Texas AM, they've got Georgia, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Florida State.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: So you're saying they only lose two of those.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: Those are just the toughest games, not even you know, some of those mid-tier uh opponents.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: So it's it's it's bullish.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm super bullish on them coming up.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: All right, poop moving.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: The ACC, this isn't really a bull prediction, it's more of a take.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: The ACC is an underpriced asset, and I think it's way closer to the big two, big ten and SEC, than it is the Big 12.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: The rankings comparison is like night and day.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: The highest ranked Big 12 team in terms of like recruiting is Texas Tech, and it's way down there.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: I think what's gonna happen this year is people are gonna look at the ACC as more of an extension of the big two and a half, less than the big four.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: We are seeing a schism, and I am bullish on the ACC being closer to the Big Ten than they are the Big 12.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: Ooh, this is a terrible take.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: Terrible take for so many reasons.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: First off, all of the best schools in the ACC are actively trying to get out of the ACC.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Yes, that's true.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: So that's if that happens, the ACC goes away.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: I just correct.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: I think there's a lot of, I mean, I think Louisville is a is a riser.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: I think Georgia Tech is a riser.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: I think Miami's gonna have actually a defense defense.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Florida State can't be worse.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Like, I just think you're seeing a surge in teams of like obviously we know Clemson's gonna be there.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: We know Clemson's there.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: We know Miami's.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: I'm pretty sure Miami's gonna be there.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: I just think there's a pit because it could be really plucky.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Solid pit could be solid.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: We're not even talking about UNC then.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: I'm not talking about UNC experience.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be interesting.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: I'm not talking about UVA who might finally put seven, eight wins together with that schedule.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, probably not, probably not, probably not, probably not.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Don't try to sell me on the C and then use UVA as your example.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: My point, I just I think the ACC is going to be better than we think.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: There are 18 teams in uh Bud Elliott's uh blue chip ratio in the whole country.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: Nine S nine Big Ten, uh sorry, nine SEC, five Big Ten, Notre Dame, and three ACC squads.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: There are three ACC squads whose rosters are like legitimately three really good teams, and the rest are pretty poo-poo right now.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: Pretty poo-poo right now.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: So the point is you're gonna see.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: I think you're going to, I wonder if the ACC will, if they can retain those teams, maybe if they can get a Notre Dame, maybe if they can convince a Texas Tech, which is gonna be the next level, the next new era of big money football.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Like I mean, SMU worked out so well, so we didn't mention them, they worked out really well absolutely year wide.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: SMU actually, yeah, forgot about that.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: You know, I I just I think we're seeing the AC.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: Obviously, the Big Ten, the whole story of the last five years college football has been the Big Ten and the SEC have moved on to the operational.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Nobody questions that.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: What I think is also happening is the ACC is pushing its way towards the top of the pile in a way that the Big 12, and obviously the Pac 12, whatever that is, um, is not.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna know pretty quickly if your take rings true or not.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: Because the ACC has a lot of big time non-conference matchups early on in the season.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Uh we're looking at Virginia Tech, South Carolina, looking at you, Notre Dame, Miami, even though Notre Dame likes to like an ACC pseudo team.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: For the for this purpose, it's not so much.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: And then, of course, the huge huge uh couple games of Alabama, Florida State, and Clemson LSU.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: Correct.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: And then lesser to a lesser extent, Syracuse, Tennessee.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: So ACC is gonna have a chance to maybe make some waves.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't think they will.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: I think there's I think there's I think the ACC is playing seven games against Power Four Ponce first week.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: So we'll I mean, not if you go all the way down the list.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: So Cal Oregon State for the ACC.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: Cal's Cal's lost every talented player they have, but they might get a win against uh the Beavers.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: All right, move on.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Uh next one.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: Dabo injures himself running down that stupid hill.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go with his ankle.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: Every year, I think somebody is gonna injure themselves running down that hill.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: It it makes no logical sense.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: No, also the the tarp that they're running on, I've never touched it, yep, so I can't confirm, but it looks really slippery.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: It does look really slippery.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: These are massive men, and the hills, the hill's got like a it's got like a level, then it goes down again.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: Like it's a lot of banging on your knees with guys adrenaline to the up to their eyeballs, like asking for blows.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: This is like this is you ever like when the uh football player Martin Chromatica broke towards ACL celebrating?
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Like, someone's gonna do that, and we've seen cheerleaders make the fall.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Yes, we have.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: So it's only a matter of time before you know what what would it take for Clemson to change that tradition?
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: Somebody if Clubnik goes down with a season.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's it'll be a flat hill by the end by the by the end of the week.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't wish that on anybody.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: No, I'm either.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: That's not a good way to enter into the state.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: That's a bad take.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: We don't know, we don't we don't refer injuries here in the mic place.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: All right, move on.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: Ohio State will be obnoxiously good again because they have the two best players in college football, um, in Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: I know they're replacing a ton.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: I know their defense losses, and honestly, the biggest thing for them is their coordinators.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: They lost um Chip Kelly, the NFL, and Jim Knowles to Penn State.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so now it's yeah, so now it's um Brian Hartline, which is receiver's coach, I believe, promoted from within.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: We think he might be okay, and Matt Patricia, the former Patriots defensive coordinator and lions head coach, who's not a good, not necessarily a great coach.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: I still think given what they have, especially led by those two guys, like national championship, they're gonna be, they might be really they're gonna be really good again.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't disagree with you there.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: I don't think that's a hugely bold take given where they are in the in the rankings.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: But I will say, if they are, given the the turnover in the coaching staff, I think people have to start, if they haven't already after the national championship, start giving Ryan Day a little more credit for what he's done.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: And not just saying, oh, it's Ohio State.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: They're gonna continue to roll out the talent, they're gonna continue to be so good.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, because that's what the good coaches do.
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: They continue to perform on the field when their staff turns over for better positions.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: Here's the bold okay, so I agree.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: Do you think it's bold to say the best two players in college football, one and two, are both play for Ohio State?
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, so anybody is there anybody, is there anybody in college football trying to try and take the orange goggles off, the purple goals off?
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Is there anybody in college football you'd rather have than Jeremiah Smith on offense or Caleb Downs defense?
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: I'll I'll say you can't pick quarterbacks.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: I think taking the quarterback out of the equation is probably the biggest thing.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: I don't, you know, I you could make an argument.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna say yes, yeah.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: Uh I think Jeremiah Smith, I think that's a yes.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't know.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's it's gotta be up.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: It's I mean, it'd be splitting hairs.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe there's a pass rusher out there, maybe a Reuben Vane from Miami or somebody, somebody who's just gonna wreak havoc coming off like you know, Colin Simmons of Texas.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: Um, but I just think it's just it's crazy.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: They won the national championship and they still have the two best players in college football on their team.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: Pardon me, just a little bit salty.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, what are you gonna do?
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's not a bad take there.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: Not a bad take.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Um, Iowa.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: This is my favorite take, I think.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: Iowa, Iowa, the Hawkeyes, they um are going to have a top third in the Big Ten passing offense this year.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Let me tell you why.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: Mark Granoski, do you know that name?
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: Probably not.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: He won the FCS, which is a lower-level college football equivalent of the Heisman.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: It's called the Walter Payton Award.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: He essentially is the best FCS player.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: He was the quarterback um at the uh at FCS from South Dakota State.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: He is now at Iowa.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: He is turning heads at camp.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Um, forens obviously has good defenses.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: He knows they have to improve.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: There's tremendous pressure on Iowa to throw the damn ball in an effective way.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: This is the best Iowa quarterback.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: So I think like Mullins, like I don't mean we have to go pretty far back to find a better thrower.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: So give me Iowa for the first time in a long time to have a actually pretty damn good passing offense.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: I'll give it to you.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: I'm thinking about it and I'm looking at their schedule.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, they've they've they they get some of the big big dogs, but it's it's doable.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna give it to you.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: And no pushback there.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: All right, two more.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: This is what we've been working on for a while.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Army Navy will both be two of the top AAC teams, American, the American Athletic Conference, which is actually getting renamed to the American Conference or dropping the eggs.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: It's not gonna be confusing at all.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Whatever.
- 11:51SPEAKER_03: Big deal.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Um, they are going to be two of the best teams in that conference every year for foreseeable future.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: Let me tell you why.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: So if you start reading all the preview magazines, you go through all these pre profiles, the common theme you hear about all the time, every team is the transfers in, the transfers out.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: You go in the AC AAC, and this is true for all the levels around the West.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: The Sunbelt, the Mac, CUSA, they are picked over.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: Anybody who's any good, I mean, sure, some of the some of them go to Ohio State and Michigan, some of them also go to Illinois and Stanford and Van Dy.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: Like the food chain exists, and every G6 conference is getting picked over.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: Who are the two schools that have legitimate barriers?
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Three, Air Force, two schools that have legitimate barriers to getting kids out, Army and Navy.
- 12:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: You're dealing with, and the the academy is my understanding is if you are a freshman or sophomore, you can leave without tremendous financial penalty from the U.S.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: government.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Like you don't owe them a shit ton of cash.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: If you transfer by your third or fourth year, which is usually when you get good at football and college football, you are on the hook for the government for hundreds of thousands of dollars of back owed um education at the academy.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: My point, Army and Navy are the only two teams that have legitimate barriers to keeping talent.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: It's not perfect.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: We saw the Army transfer uh just go to um Arizona State.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: He's just paying out the nose.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: Well, NIL will help.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: NIO will help out that.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: But like for most of these kids, like it's not gonna be there.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: And they sign up to go to the Navy to go work for the Navy for six years.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, and here's the other point.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm already gonna say it's a great take.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 13:23SPEAKER_02: Uh so I'm gonna add to it definitely by saying that how do you get good and stay good as you stay old and with the kids that are gonna be there a while, even the ones that aren't good enough to get plucked over, just having that experience, even as a mid-level player, yeah, is gonna make you so much better.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: And the in the the continuity around you as well.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: This was the standard of college football up until like five years ago.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, Alabama and Ohio State and Georgia would stack all these five-star kids, and then every year they would be, they couldn't go anywhere, and they'll say to sit out a year or some kind of extreme circumstance where they graduated.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: And what that meant was they got really seasoned, really strong, really well coached, and they were all ready to live to deliver year three.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: That was the standard of pretty much every team in college football all the time.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Now it's really only like two schools.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: And here's the other thing I'll say with all of the conference realignment, those schools are staying in the American conference.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: Yes, you're not gonna see the SEC, ACC, you're not gonna see any of these major conferences try and pluck one of the service academies, and they're happy where they are.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: Whereas, you know, some of these other schools, they're really lobbying, you know, trying to make those moves to bigger conferences for the payday.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: So even if changes happen, they will say they will continue to be good and at the top, top tier.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: And also it doesn't hurt that like the bottom of the AAC, soon-to-be AC is terrible.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: You're talking about UAB, Temple, Charlotte, Rice, like yeah, no disrespect to all those uh proud programs, but you're not talking, not exactly the who's who of college football.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: So expect Army Navy to be around a lot until the rules change again, which could be any year because college football is nuts right now.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: Last one.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Homework take.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: JMU is gonna be the best team in the state of Virginia by a wide margin.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: UVA, tech, liberty.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: Can you make the case for any of them having a better being better than what we're looking at right now?
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: Um no, you know, it's a few years ago, this would have been the boldest of bold takes.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: But uh the Commonwealth has has seen, I mean, we had ODU uh up there.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: Uh yes, so JMU.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: They beat Virginia Tech twice.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I hate to say it, but um, I don't hate that take.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: We'll see a lot to be proven on the field this year for Virginia Tech and the UVA Wahoos.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Um, and I'm not, if I'm not mistaken, I think Liberty actually plays JMU.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: I'm might but we'll look up, we'll look that we'll get back to you.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: I think they actually play each other, which would be the best game Virginia.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, oh over-under win totals for UVA and Virginia Tech are six and a half and five and a half.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: Liberty is the odds on favorites when the CUSA, but CUSA is legitimately one of the worst conferences in the history of college football.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: So, so bad.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: Um, and JMU is the odds on, yes, they are playing each other September 20th.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: September 20th at six o'clock Eastern, we are going to know who the best school in Virginia is.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: And neither of them are gonna have a Virginia in their name.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Mark it on your calendar.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: Mark it on your calendars, folks.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Uh JMU Liberty for the true Commonwealth Cup of 2025.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: I can't believe we're talking about that.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: Commonwealth cup without a Virginia or Virginia Tech.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: So many of our listeners, as UV and tech fans, I do apologize for that.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Uh, all right, let's keep it moving.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Um, so we've already chat for a little while.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, so what we do what we'd like to do now is kind of work out through uh just kind of categories.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: Um, Mike and I are gonna obviously keep track of all this.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: We're gonna tell you all, we'll give you all our picks for kind of main events that happened this year.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: Um, hot seat coach, Heisman, national champ, conference winners.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: And then in December, we'll revisit it and I will dunk on Mike for his shitty picks, and he will dunk on me for mine.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: And it's gonna be really fun December content when everything we say is right, except for those two hole in ones that we hit that we'll we'll remember those and forget all of our bad takes.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we had a couple last year.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: Yes, we did.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: Yes, we did.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: Rinse repeat.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: So let's start with coaches.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Uh, obviously, coaches run college football, biggest personalities, have a lot to do if you win or not.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, two categories.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: One is who will be the first coach in P4 fired.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: We're looking for the power four coaches, the big name programs.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: And of these hot seat coaches, I'm gonna give you a list of hot seat coaches.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Who's gonna be the one to play themselves off?
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: Last year, I think we'd say Baylor was one of those teams.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: Davorina really came around.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: Billy Napier was pretty close to the axe, finished strong.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, so I just came up with some names, and obviously, if you want to add more, that's fine.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Billy Napier, Florida, Brent Venables, Oklahoma, Freeze, Auburn, Tony Elliott, UVA, Brent Pry, Virginia Tech, Luke Fickle, Wisconsin, Lincoln Riley, USC.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Any any other any other popular ones I'm missing?
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: That mush goes.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, um, uh Arkansas, Arkansas.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: Um uh Pittman.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: Sam Pittman, Sam Pittman, Arkansas.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: I should have the other one.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Um, who will be the first coach fired and who will be the one to uh ride the ship?
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, I'm gonna tell you, you I already know where you're you're coming in on one of these because you already picked uh Florida to win like 10 games this year.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: Uh so I'm gonna go with uh Hugh Freeze as the first to be fired, although you know, back against the wall.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: I think he has proven to be somewhat of a disaster, and Auburn is not the place where you want to have a disaster.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: They were five and seven last year.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: Reports of them rotating the offensive play calling, we're talking about as many as three guys calling offensive plays at once.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, their schedule, once again, is brutal.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: Um, I do think this is what year three for him.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: So I think I think hot seat is probably next year.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: But given this list, who's gonna be successful and who's gonna face plant, uh, freeze face plants again this year.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: That was my only cold water on that thing.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: Was given the schedule is so bad, it does take time to amass talent, even the NIL area is a little bit.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: He might going into year three, he might get a little bit more grace, but he's getting close to the end of his.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: But I don't I don't hate that take at all.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, Auburn is a volatile football team, it has been for a long time.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: So and there are there are heavy reports around Auburn, boosters, administrators, lots of hands in the in meddling.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: A lot of there's just not a lot of just you know turning the keys over to the head coach.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's kind of a political situation down there.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: It doesn't help that he keeps losing to Diego Pavio, both at his first and second scale.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: That's not that's not ideal.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: Stop losing, stop losing to New Mexico, stop losing to New Mexico State in Vanderbilt.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: That's um, it's not not good.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: All right, so I'll go first coach fired.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is kind of a chalk pick.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: I'm taking Sam Pittman in Arkansas.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: I just think they're out of gas.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, I like Talen Green.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think he's gonna he's a pretty good quarterback, it'd do well, but their roster, we've seen a lot of those guys move to the bigger, better programs.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't think the retention is there.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: I think he's kind of already, I think his fate's already sealed.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: I think somewhere out there, there's a there's a board of trustees meeting in Arkansas already having happened and just kind of waiting for win.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: So I don't have any hot take on that.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: I just I think it's gonna be Arkansas.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: I think it's gonna be the first coach to go.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I think that's a good pick.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: Um, as far as you know, trending up or down, looking at the lists, I think Lincoln Raleigh and Brent Venables have really good years this year.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna go ahead and say that both of those teams pull them off the hot seat and maybe even Wisconsin.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: Actually, thinking about Wisconsin's schedule, very manageable.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, you guys already know my take for the coach is gonna get themselves off.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: I think Billy Napier.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Um, I think they're I think they're bullish.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: Um, let's but since we're here, let's quickly talk about Elliot or Pry.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: Um do I'll simplify it.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: Do both Elliott and Pry have jobs at their current positions five months from right now?
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: That's tough.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: I know dead silence.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: I think when you're looking at them, you know, this is a both this is a make or break year for both.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: Yes, I don't know the fan base well enough to to really have a finger on the pulse of like where they stand with these guys because that plays a huge role in it.
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: I have to think that um that that Brent Prize got a much shorter leash and probably the tougher schedule.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: Uh does.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: You guys have to say I'm gonna say prize gone and Elliott squeaks by another year.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: That's I think I think I'm gonna say the same thing.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: Brent Prize team doesn't have the talent, the superstars that it had last year.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Folks like Jalen Lane have moved on.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: A lot of um higher profile guys have are no longer with the team, but it's it's deeper.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: So you could argue pound for pound, the 85 man is better than usual, but I mean the team's gonna go how Kyron Drones go, and the new coordinator, like they're gonna have to have to win.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: They were expectations were there last year.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: They were 14 point favorites against Vanderbilt week one, lost, never really recovered.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: This year has to be better for Tony Elliott.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Um, I think this is the best roster he's had.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: This is the best quarterback he's had in Chandler Morris, the North Texas kid.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Like, he is objectively better than anything he's had.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: So, but it's got to be now because the schedule is very management.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: This year they're over under one total.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: Like there's a chance.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: There's real, there's a real world where UVA goes like eight and four.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: And if you're if you're eight and four UVA, you're not going anywhere.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: So looking at UVA's schedule, they're dodging, you know, the headliners of the ACC versus you know, Virginia Tech's got non-conference slates with South Carolina and Vanderbilt.
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: Vanderbilt's gonna be a problem.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: Yes, Miami Lake.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, Virginia Tech's got way more landmines.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: You don't we don't know about Florida State.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: Both teams play Florida State to be fair, but like that's another potential loss, maybe.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: All right, so that's your coaching.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: All right, let's talk about the conferences.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: So, so and just to avoid being repetitive and make it interesting, we're gonna do a snake draft for this.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: Um, Mike and I are gonna pick uh two teams each from each of the power four conferences.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: Um, one of us will go first, the other person will go last, other person will go second and third.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: We are looking for conference winner picks.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: So we each got two bites at the apple.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: Uh let's since we put these in order a long time ago.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: We'll start with the big 10.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: Do you would would you prefer to go first or would you prefer to go second and third?
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: Uh I'll I'll take second and third.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: Uh I'll go first.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Um Penn State.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Give me the give me give me give me the Knitting Lions.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: They have the best two coordinators in college football.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: I duly believe that Annie Colniki and um Jim Knowles.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: Um, K Tron Allen, Nick Singleton, best offensive, best running back duo in college football, I think.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: Um, I love their defense.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: Deny Jalen Sutton, Zane Durant, guys every level.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: Jim Knowles, the nasty coordinator.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: They've been they've been top 10 for a long time.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: Um, I think Drew Aller puts it together this year.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: This is the year they win the Big Ten.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: So give me Penn State.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is definitely a make or break year for uh Penn State and uh for James Franklin.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: Uh he hasn't won the big games.
- 24:20SPEAKER_02: I know he took them far last year, but this is the most complete roster that they've had, and this is really the opportunity to do it.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, when the timing just lines up, uh Penn State, great pick.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: That's basically saying, give me the field because I'm gonna take Ohio State and Oregon.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: Yes, correct.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, as one should.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: I was hoping you would, but yes.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: So I'm putting in this situation.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't think I have to say much about it.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: No, you don't.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: That's yeah, those are those are both good pits.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: And for obviously, those those, I mean, those are your three best teams.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: You could kind of rearrange them in order.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: The odds are somewhere in the same ballpark, the three beyond that is when there's a big drop-off.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: I do think I do think Michigan is gonna be sneaky good this year.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: And I think I do think Southern Cal is gonna be much better.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: I think their defense is gonna be improved.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: I'm going back to between those two.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: I will, I mean, obviously, LSU lost to Southern Cal.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Their defense did make pretty decent improvement last year.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: They've got the talent.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: They got the talent.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: I think Anthony Lynn's a good Anthony Lynn's a good coordinator.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: They're bringing him back.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Um, Michigan is always good at defense.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: They still have guys, despite the last two years' drafts really picking them apart, they still have a lot of high-end talent.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: And of course, the headliner of the offseason in the recruiting world is Bryce Underwood.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: Number one recruit, kid from Belleville, um, Michigan, right down the road.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: Um, five-star, number one recruit overall, Cam Newton clones, but it's kind of the vibe and the question, not a question of if, it's a matter of when he gets on the field and how far does he go.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: We have seen generational guys come in as freshmen in uh big conferences and win a lot of big games.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: So, like if I'll say put it this way if Michigan wins the Big Ten, Bryce Underwood is a top 10 quarterback in college football.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: So absolutely 100%.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'll take my shout out at that.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: All right, give me Penn State and Michigan.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: You got Ohio State and Oregon.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: Very cool.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: All right, now I'll get into game.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: Weird.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: Let's do the Big 12.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: There's legitimately 12 teams in this 18 team conference that we're so calling the Big 12 that can win um this conference.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: And um everyone's got an angle.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: Uh I went, you went, I w you go first just time.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: Oh man, this is tough because the very first game of the season could uh give us our winners.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: Yes, farm again on side.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: I think I'm gonna go chalk just because I'm I'm lacking um the early season depth of knowledge that one develops over several weeks of of research.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go K-State.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think that they have a lot of good returning talent.
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: Um, they it's kind of a coin flip, like you said.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: A lot of these teams, very even should be a wild, wild year in the Big 12.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, I like K-State pick for a couple reasons.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: One, they have the best quarterback running back combination, Dylan Edwards and um Avery Johnson.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: They're gonna, I mean, they're gonna run the ball like crazy.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: They also have their first ever five-star, number one tight end recruit in the country.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: I believe his name is Lincoln Cure, I believe.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: Um, K-State is notorious for running two, three tight end sets, that jumbo um offset offense, and they're gonna be a handful.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: And if you're not good at tackling and lane discipline and meeting the hole, like they're gonna punish you.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: So I could see, and they're always good at defense.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, they know what they're doing.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: So I could very well see Chris Kryman and them getting it done.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'll take Arizona State, they're probably the other chalk team.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: Um, they won last year, they bring a lot back.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Cam Scataboo moves on, but they got the army transfer and other kid running back.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: So I'm not that we're with the Scataboo loss.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: Um, Sam Levitt is awesome.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: Jordan Tyson, second team, all American, loaded defense.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: They did win a lot of like really close games.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: So, like Law of Averages says like they're probably gonna come back, but um I'll go with uh Arizona State, it's the other team.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: And my favorite pick, I think, of the season, going Utah.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: Love, love Utah.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: Um, what you what you need to know about Utah?
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: So obviously the Cam rising saga, which you and I were bullish on for years, not one of our better takes, but we love that guy.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: He has finally retired from football and moved on, which now Utah has refocused uh their offense.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: They don't have to plan for his maybe playing, not playing.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, put the whole program in limbo for far too long.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: Uh they made two massive one, they made two massive offseason additions that you probably don't know about.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: Devin Dampier, the New Mexico transfer quarterback who absolutely ran wild in the Mount West.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: Outstanding a dual threat guy.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: I think he's gonna do so well.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: And he's bringing their offensive coordinator, John Beck, with him.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: So it's his guy.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: Utah has one of the best offensive line in the country, like top five.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: Uh Spencer Fino is gonna be a first-round offensive tackle.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: Very, very good.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: Utah always plays salty defense.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: It's a hell of a place to play.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: It's a really good home field home field, and those teams are always really well coached.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: They always play good defense.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: I know they lost a lot of talent, but give me Utah to just run nuts on the Big 12, play good defense, four short fields, and Devin Deer's gonna have a monster year.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I want to say that last year was the first time Utah hadn't won like nine or ten games.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, fluky, fluky.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: They're definitely due for a rebound.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: Uh Winningham, fantastic coach.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: Actually, um, probably on the way out.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: This could be his last year there.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: Um, so huge, huge year for them.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: I I do like them to make a big push.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: Um, I can flip a point on this last one.
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: I there are a couple teams that I love.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: I kind of think that Kansas makes a big push this year.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: I do really like BYU even after losing their quarterback um because he had sex with his girlfriend.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: Um and yes, violated team roles.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: Yes, correct.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: Can't do that.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: Sorry, sorry, BYU.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think I'm gonna go Texas Tech.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: I think that's a fun pick.
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: Um, they're gonna be good this year.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: A lot of questions, a lot of they've been kind of piecemealing it together with um with a lot of transfer uh picks and pickups.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: So uh I think that's one to watch.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: So I'll go Texas Tech Tech Raiders.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: Texas Tech has probably the most talented defense in the Big 12.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: They're number two, I think, transfer portal class overall.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: Their pass rush is the envy of the conference.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: They are going to get after the passer a lot.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: They have a lot of talent.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: My cold water Texas Tech Tech is, I mean, are you we're signing up for Barron Morton again?
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: Like, he's a good college quarterback, he's been around a long time, yeah.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: He's got experience, but like, can he be a different speaker than he has not been historically?
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: Well, that's that's a good point, uh, because we're gonna touch on that a lot early on, especially as the year goes.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: This is kind of the year of do you have a returning quarterback or somebody new?
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: There are new quarterback names all over the country that are really big eye-opening names and could change the course of uh college football as well as you know, obviously the teams they're playing for.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: And then you've got guys like that that have been around, you know, is mediocre but experienced better than you know, taking a chance on uh a guy that was high profile.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: Last year I had a take about do you remember this?
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: We were talking about Big 12 quarterbacks.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: I said the Big 12 is gonna be the best quarterback conference in college football.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we talked about that.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: We did.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: It was a bad take, didn't work out, but it might this year between Jalen Daniels, Avery Johnson, Devin Dampier, um Sawyer Robertson, Baylor, um Bear Morton, Texas Tech, um uh uh I'm I'm blind, uh Rocko, um Rocco Beck's Caden Salter, the Liberty Kid, or the five-star uh Juju Lewis.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: Uh the Big 12 this year, actually of Sam the best one, probably Sam Levitt.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Like the Big 12 has a ton of high-end experience returning quarterbacks.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: This is the my problem is I was just a year early.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was just a year early.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: This is the year like a lot of your fashion.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: Like a lot of my fashion.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: Way ahead of the time.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, my fashion, yeah.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: Way ahead of the time, take this year.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: I'll run it back this year.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: This year, the Big 12 will be the best quarterback coming back.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: Bull take.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: Bull take, got a shot.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: All right, ACC.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: Um do you want to do you want Clemson?
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: You want to come to me?
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: Let's see.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: Uh well, I guess it's my turn to go first, isn't it?
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: Or do you think I'll go second there?
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: I'll mix it up.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: You can you can have Clemson.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: Okay, Clemson.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: All right, obviously.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: Okay, but no, Clemson is the favorite.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: This is a great year for Clemson.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Like we were talking about being old.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: Clemson is an old team.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, like we were just talking about returning quarterback, a very good quarterback, obviously.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: Uh coaching staff intact.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Like, much like Penn State, things are lining up well for Clemson.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: Clemson is Penn State in the ACC.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, and they, you know, other than the LSU game, very manageable ACC schedule.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: So in a prime position, they're a playoff easy, no brainer.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, full stop, no matter what happens, playoff team.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: And they are the odds-on favorite to win the conference by substantial margin.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: This is one of those conferences which is pretty clear.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: So that's fair.
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm gonna zag a little bit.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go with my two and three pick.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: I'm actually gonna leave Miami for you if you want them.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna think, yeah, I'm I'm out of Miami this year.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: I'll talk about in a minute.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go Louisville.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: I love what uh Jeff Braum is doing.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: Um, I think Miller Moss.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: I'm saying I'll stay in running back.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: Louisville is good.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: Jeff Braum is one of the best coaches in college football.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: They don't talk about much like Kyle Winningham, betting on coaches big this year.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: Um, and then I'm gonna go back to uh SMU, Brett Lashley, Kevin Jennings, turning back.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, give me the Stangs and the Cardinals for my two and three pick.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: I thought about Georgia Tech.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: I really like Brent Key, I really like Haynes King.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: I wish they didn't lose he is doing big things.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: I wish they didn't lose Eric Singleton to Auburn.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: I think it's one of the best uh um slot receivers in college football.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: Auburn's gonna feast with him.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: But um, so I thought about Georgia Tech a lot, but go ahead and give me um SMU and Louisville.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: I like the SMU pick a lot.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: I think Louisville you're probably a little bit high on.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: And it's a I know what you're doing, but it's a complete miss to disrespect Miami like that.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: Um Miami has a fantastic offensive line.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: Yes, I do.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: Carson Beck is you know a very, very good quarterback.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: The reports and camps are good.
- 33:59SPEAKER_02: The reports and camps are good.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: His numbers were great last year.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: Um, I think he'll probably have more, he'll probably have a better year than he did last year.
- 34:08SPEAKER_02: And the only thing that gives me pause on Miami, and obviously I'm picking them for the purposes of this exercise, is Mario Christopher.
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: He just much like much like my take on Billy Navier, he is not a good game manager and not good at making decisions and put his team in the best uh position to win.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I actually think Miami has a ton of talent, a ton of great pieces, but will they be able to do it a lot like we were talking about with Florida, despite some of the decisions by their head coach?
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: Are you giving any life to um uh Fernando Mendoza at Duke?
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: They're gonna have a good defense, they're gonna have one of the better quarterbacks in the conference.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, does Duke does Duke pique your interest at all in this context?
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: No, not in this context.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: UNC actually piques my interest.
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: If we were if we were gonna run it, there's a fifth, you'd go yeah.
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: If they're gonna run it a little bit further down the list, um looking at their schedule, again, they're dodging the big boys, and Bill Belichick's gonna be able to have them in position like sound football, right?
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: We're not having those same conversations about uh Belichick that we are Christophall.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: Like it's just a no-brainer.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: So he's gonna have them ready to play.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: They're gonna be fundamentally sound.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: Um you like the Gio Lopez experience, South Alabama?
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: I just think I think that's assuming he wins the job, excuse me.
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: I think they're gonna, I think they're gonna be good.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: And I think their schedule lines up.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: I think this is kind of a year to kind of say, like, you know, they're gonna win eight, eight games, nine games.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: I don't know what the over or under is, but I like them to be like uh an eyebrow razor this year.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: I think that's fair.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: I and there one more team I'll throw in that category for move.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: I'll also put Pitt in there, bringing back Eli Holstein again.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: Um, returning a lot.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: They started 7-0.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: People forget that.
- 35:42SPEAKER_01: There was a minute there we were all high on Pitt, and then they lost, I think, five or six straight.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, bottom down.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: But Eli Holstein um showed some things that I liked.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: Um, um uh Desmond Reed is uh, I think was I think his second team All American all-purpose backs, they've got some talent in the backfields.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: Patton Arduzi, again, another coach that you and I have liked a lot for a long time.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: So great defense every year.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean, uh this is the point where I clip the podcast and I say, see, I did talk about Pitt when they went when they went.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: Obviously, I picked him to finish fifth, it's not the same.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: But moving on.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: All right, the the headliner, SEC.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: Um, God, I don't even care.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: Do you want to go?
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is yeah, I don't care.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: Let's let's just talk about the teams that we think are at the top of the list here, and let's um let's talk about the whys.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: Why and why not?
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: You you want to you can start with the obvious Texas.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: I'll go first.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: I'll take Texas.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: Um, uh the Colin Simmons, Anthony Hill, most talented team in the country, probably pound for pound, I think.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: Um, I think Ohio State's like number two.
- 36:39SPEAKER_01: Uh I the question, honestly, is Arch Manning.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: You know, he's been there for two years, he's been seasoning, he has not done much.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: This is one of my things I noticed is like he's in terms of actual production, especially against good teams, it's virtually non-existent.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: Numbers, yeah.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: Don't have any numbers yet, but I think the talent is there, and this is gonna be a question of like for Arch Manning in this league, given how deep in talented the SEC is this year, and it is every year, he has to be not only good, he has to be great to win it.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, and the I think you will be.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm trying to say.
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to stumble over my foot.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: I think you're gonna be talking about Arch Manning in New York, and I think between him and that defense, I think I think Colin Simmons might be the best pass rusher in college football.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: I think Anthony Hill is a tackling machine.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: He's gonna get another 140 tackles or something insane again this year, and it's Texas, they're loaded everywhere.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: Give me the chalk, give me the give me the long horns.
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think Texas uh is the easy no-brainer, and then it's you know, do you have LSU or do you have Georgia?
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: Or Bama?
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: Those are the four topics.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Bama, I think to a little lesser extent because of their question market quarterback.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: Um selling Ty Simpson, all right.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: Well, he's again, are you starting a true freshman or a young guy who has no snaps, or are you playing somebody like Garrett Nusmeyer?
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: And who do you put your stock in if all else is equal?
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, and then it comes down to is this game gonna be played on the road or at home?
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: Because there's talent, all those teams, all four of those teams, have talent all across the board.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: Um, if you're gonna put my feet to the fire, yeah, give me two and three.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm gonna go Georgia, yep, and then I'm gonna go LSU.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, cool.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: And my my knock on LSU is gonna be a knock on Brian Kelly.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, Nussmeyer has shown what he can do.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: I think he's one of the best uh college football quarterbacks in the country, yeah.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: Tops in the ACC or in the SEC.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, where's their defense?
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: Do they show up?
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: This Clem Clemson game is actually a huge game for them.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: They've lost two openers.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: Five, five openers in a row.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: Okay, five.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: Five in a row, yeah.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: Two two for Brian Kelly, right?
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: Or is that all five?
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: This is this is also his fourth year.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: He he lost, yeah.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: This is this is third.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: He lost to Florida State twice in USC.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: So this is this is his fourth option.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: And Ed Orgeron lost the two before that.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: So we're we're on five in a row.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: Gotta win an opening.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: So odds are in your favor, actually.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think so.
- 38:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's my take on LSU.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: I think they've got all the pieces, everything's lining up for them.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: Um, and then for Bama, you know, I I think they're a little bit more, uh, I question them a little bit more the same way I do Georgia at the quarterback spot.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: You know, what are we gonna get?
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: We don't know.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: Um uh I've got a lot of faith.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm last team's I'm taking Bama.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: Uh if I had to pick a fourth team, a lot of it is faith in Calen DeBoer.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: I just think what he did in UW was really impressive.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: And while we Ty Simpson is as green as anybody, like he's got a lot around him.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: You have to remember for all I think we're talking about Jeremiah Smith, Ryan Williams in any other year would be getting all of the attention.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: He is an outstanding wide receiver.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: They bring a lot back on defense.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: Caden Proctor is gonna anchor one of again the most obnoxiously good offensive lines.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: Again, I just think Alabama's gonna be.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: I think what happened was obviously the Saban, when Saban left, he left a massive vacuum, and everybody, you know, when Saban left like you can't follow that, nobody ever will.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: I think there's a little bit, I hate to say this because obviously you and I both have a vested interest in Alabama and Florida being bad.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: I don't unfortunately either of them are.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: I think we're seeing an overcorrection from the the talking heads about Alabama.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: I think they're gonna be obnoxiously good.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: So I'll make a case when it'll be the fourth best.
- 40:18SPEAKER_02: Well, I'll add to that point a little bit because I think that one of the things that they were dealing with last year is Jalen Milrow's inability to play like a full game.
- 40:29SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 40:29SPEAKER_02: Um, whereas, you know, you look at Ty Simpson allegedly, he's got more the style that Debore is familiar with.
- 40:37SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: Um Milrow is obviously more of a run first guy.
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:41SPEAKER_02: And uh the more complete quarterback who can, you know, sit in the pocket and assess, uh, I think is probably gonna be in a better situation this year offensively.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: Um, but again, totally unproven.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, skill set by far matches what Debore wants to do better.
- 40:53SPEAKER_01: Um, kudos for getting the most good at Jalen Mill ran all over LSU, it doesn't feel very good.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: Um, but yes, Ty Simpson is a much closer match to Michael Penix than Jalen Milrow.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: And can can we get that type of production with a Ryan Williams and good defense and Jam Miller running backs?
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we might.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: We might.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: All right, those are your picks for the conferences.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: Uh, let's get this out.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: Uh, national championship.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: Let me go first.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: You want you?
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: Texas.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: Texas.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: Um, I'll take Penn State.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: Um, we talked about these teams already.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: Um, the only thing, I mean, and we've already the case for Texas, you know that.
- 41:25SPEAKER_01: Only thing, same thing, Penn State.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: You know, I wish it wasn't James Franklin.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: I wish it wasn't so bad in big games, but if it's not this year, it's just I don't, I don't think yeah, he'll he'll never win.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: No, this year never win.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, timing lines up perfectly.
- 41:36SPEAKER_01: Yep, yeah.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: It's this year never.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: Okay, uh Heisman, uh, two picks.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: I want to give me a top 10 pick somebody think is really good, and then give me a long shot.
- 41:45SPEAKER_02: I gotta, I mean, if I'm picking Texas, I gotta stick with Arsh Manning.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: Because if he gets him there, then you know, yep, he he wins the Heisman.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm gonna go nuss.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: Uh, I just I think he's rocking a ton of numbers.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: I think this is gonna do it.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: I you know, I was I was here last time and I saw Jaden Daniels, and I said, I'll go do the homework pick, pick Michael Penix, who finished third.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: Was an awful pick.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, and I I faded him as his second year starter.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: We have this the last three times LSU has had a second year starting quarterback, Joe Burrow, Jaden Daniels, Garrett Nussmeyer.
- 42:15SPEAKER_01: Give me him year three turning into the man.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna I'm gonna take I'm gonna take Nussmeyer.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: All right, long shots.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: Uh anybody, any, any, anything, anybody gives you who's your long shot?
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: Tell me your long shot first.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm gonna go Devin Dampier.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go Utah.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, if there's a world where they go is 11 and 1 and Utah or 12 and oh, um, and Utah because they're like fifth or sixth in odds to win the Big 12, I think, currently.
- 42:41SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm gonna go Devin Dampier as a real long shot to win.
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: Um, but you could talk, you could have talked me into Ryan Williams.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: Um, or uh yeah.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, whenever we talk long shots, my first thought, uh, because I know it'll never happen, is who's my my favorite like defensive player?
- 42:59SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: And then I think, okay, that's not gonna happen.
- 43:01SPEAKER_02: Who's the next long shot?
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: Maybe a running back will finally win one.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: I would love that.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: I said that was it last year or the year before we were talking running backs, and there's so many good running backs.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: So many got any love.
- 43:12SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, I don't know.
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: Maybe you know who I would like?
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: Let's give me Haynes King.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: You mentioned him earlier.
- 43:17SPEAKER_02: Oh, I love that bitch.
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: Um, if Georgia Tech makes a push and gets into the playoff as like the second ACC team, yes, um, he'll he'll be in that conversation.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: Yep, okay.
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, Brent Keys does a lot with him, and he's gonna get the ball a lot.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: Um, he he carries the ball and throws, so he'll get he'll be he'll he'll get enough big stages, he has a chance to get enough big wings.
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: He's doing it with his arm and his legs, hands and his legs, double production.
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: Okay, I like that.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: Good stuff.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: All right, top 10.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: So this is our one, my probably my favorite exercise, the whole pod.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: We've picked the team in the top 10, and I'll read them to you really quickly, that's going to finish unranked.
- 43:51SPEAKER_01: It's happened every year going back to like the stone age in college football, and one team that's outside the top 25 that you've got vaulting all the way into finishing the top 10.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm gonna go first.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, top 10 teams, real quick.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: Texas, Penn State, Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oregon, Alabama, LSU, Miami.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: That's your AP top 10.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: I'm doing Miami.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: Miami's defense was one of the worst defenses in the conference in the country last year, is awful.
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: Cam Ward obviously made up for that.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: Uh, all those guys, Arroyo, Restrepo, like they made it work and they ran a pretty good season, but their defense was abysmal.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: If Carson Beck isn't healthy, if he's he has all of his weapons are gone, if he can't get on the same page as transfers like CJ Daniels, if their defensive transfers don't fill those holes, like there's a path for my Miami to lose a lot of games and fall a top 10.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: So I think for the fallout team, I gotta go Miami.
- 44:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, you're you're sticking with your original pick.
- 44:46SPEAKER_02: I don't hate that at all.
- 44:47SPEAKER_02: And you know, like you said, uh Miami's gonna go as their quarterback goes in a lot of ways.
- 44:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think when you look at the list top to bottom, um, man, that's tough.
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: So these teams are all loaded.
- 45:01SPEAKER_02: All every every one of these teams is a disappointment if they don't make the playoffs.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think so.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: The question is who's gonna lose four games?
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: Not just disappointment.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: Like who's going to bottom out?
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: And as I'm looking through the list, I'm always trying to keep schedule in mind.
- 45:13SPEAKER_02: I guess I've gotta go Bama.
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: I don't think, I mean, just because of the schedule.
- 45:19SPEAKER_02: They could lose a lot, they could lose that game.
- 45:20SPEAKER_02: Just because of schedule.
- 45:21SPEAKER_02: You're starting a young quarterback.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let's go Bama.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: I think you could zag a little bit of Oregon.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: You know, Dante Moore's not sure.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: They lost uh their best receiver already.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: Um, Oregon also has a bunch of pretty big games.
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: Like you could maybe make the case there if you squint, but this is this is like the hard super hard category to pick.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: So to be fair, Mike and I are kind of throwing up hills.
- 45:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and if Bama, I mean, if Bama finished the season outside of the top 25 after last year, not making the playoff, I mean, it would be step down, big step down.
- 45:51SPEAKER_02: It would be total panic mode in Tuscaloosa.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: All right, reverse.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: This is the really hard one.
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: These are both really hard.
- 45:56SPEAKER_01: Pick the team outside the current top 25 that will win enough games to finish the season in the AP top 10.
- 46:04SPEAKER_01: Again, something's happened almost every year.
- 46:05SPEAKER_01: I think last year was SMU, if I kept remember correctly.
- 46:08SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about a couple of these teams.
- 46:09SPEAKER_02: Okay, make we can make your your pick, but let's talk about a couple.
- 46:12SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 46:13SPEAKER_02: First one that comes to my mind Georgia Tech.
- 46:16SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 46:16SPEAKER_02: Straight coming off the Hanes King talk.
- 46:19SPEAKER_02: I also really like Southern Cal.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: I see a couple on here that you're probably gonna be into.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: Okay, yes.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: Uh Georgia Tech, where I made the Kates for Southern Cal.
- 46:27SPEAKER_01: Um, Louisville, I I picked my long shot.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: Uh oh, I'll go a little further down that list.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, Nebraska or Auburn?
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: I could see I again, no chance.
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: Okay, no chance.
- 46:38SPEAKER_01: No chance.
- 46:39SPEAKER_01: So the Auburn thing is Jack Snarl.
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: Jack Snarl was the five-star.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: He was supposed to be the air parent at Oklahoma.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: It just did not work out.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: Fired um offensive coordinator, um, kind of restarting at Auburn.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: The question would work out.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: They have two of the best receivers, tandem college football, Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton.
- 46:57SPEAKER_01: So they're going to have great weapons.
- 46:59SPEAKER_01: The defense is going to get better, and they lost a lot of like close games, stupid games, like in the worst way.
- 47:05SPEAKER_01: They had them on the ropes late.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: So if you're talking about a team that they lost, lost a Vandy at home, that's not gonna happen again, I think.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: Um, so if you're asking pretty confident, it's pretty good at football.
- 47:17SPEAKER_01: If you're asking me for a team that has the talent and Auburn and Auburn, yes, it's good.
- 47:21SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's a great pick, Dave Paglia.
- 47:23SPEAKER_01: If you're talking about a team that has the blue chip ratio, we talk about those 18 teams in the blue chip ratio that are have the capacity to win a natty, Auburn's one of them.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: So I'll I can make the case for Auburn.
- 47:35SPEAKER_01: Uh Nebraska.
- 47:36SPEAKER_01: I'm just I I I can't I can't quit Nebraska.
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: I've gotten dunked on.
- 47:40SPEAKER_01: Nebraska's been such a bad, I'm not even a Nebraska fan, and my relationship with them has just been nothing but abusive.
- 47:45SPEAKER_01: But I'm going back to it again.
- 47:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:46SPEAKER_01: Dylan Royola, year two.
- 47:48SPEAKER_01: I'm into that.
- 47:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:49SPEAKER_01: Matt Rule year three, which has been incredibly better at Temple, at Baylor.
- 47:53SPEAKER_01: Like he has done that multiple times.
- 47:54SPEAKER_01: Um, and the big thing, the big off-season kind of story of they got Dane Key, the awesome Kentucky receiver.
- 48:00SPEAKER_01: I guess nobody says he's Kentucky.
- 48:01SPEAKER_01: I could have picked that guy then.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: At least I'm getting fired.
- 48:03SPEAKER_01: What's his name?
- 48:04SPEAKER_01: Who's Kentucky coach?
- 48:06SPEAKER_01: Uh why am I blanking?
- 48:08SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 48:08SPEAKER_01: He's getting fired though.
- 48:09SPEAKER_01: Um, no, he's Dane Key.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: Um, and the big thing, obviously, is the big Nebraska storyline this offseason is Dana Holbrin.
- 48:16SPEAKER_01: Dana Holgren is a new offensive coordinator.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: Dana Holsgrin's been on college football for a long time and produced a lot of good offenses.
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: He's done some interesting things, even back to West Virginia times.
- 48:27SPEAKER_01: And now he's got a five-star prototype Patrick Mahomes look-alike quarterback.
- 48:32SPEAKER_01: And you're telling me there's not a world where they that gets together.
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: They put that together.
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: Not really.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna take so for my kind of I guess my official pick, give me Nebraska.
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: I'm kind of going lower in that list.
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna mid-30s.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: Give me Nebraska and Auburn as my two somehow finish the top 10 this year.
- 48:49SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 48:49SPEAKER_02: And I'm taking Georgia Tech and Southern Cal.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: I like those picks as well.
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: All right, last segment before we get out of town.
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: Over under picks for the homers.
- 48:57SPEAKER_01: This is where we pick.
- 48:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, as those of you who don't know, every tease every week we talk about our homer teams.
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: LSU for me, Tennessee for Mike, and then UVA and Virginia Tech for our in-state beloved college football brethren.
- 49:07SPEAKER_01: Uh, we like to support the hokies and the who's on this show.
- 49:10SPEAKER_01: Um, over under windhoes, I'll give them to you and we can talk about over and under.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, we'll start with LSU.
- 49:14SPEAKER_01: Over over eight and a half, juiced minus 160 to the over.
- 49:18SPEAKER_01: Under eight and a half plus one thirty-four.
- 49:21SPEAKER_01: This is the best team Bon Kelly's had.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, give me the over.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: Give me the over.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: Um, it's minus 160, so it's juiced pretty high.
- 49:27SPEAKER_01: So you're you're gonna pay a lot for that one, but I mean, I I I think our floor is nine and three.
- 49:31SPEAKER_01: I really do.
- 49:32SPEAKER_01: So that would be an over.
- 49:33SPEAKER_01: So give me the LSU.
- 49:35SPEAKER_01: Vols, over eight and a half plus one fourteen, juiced the under minus 140.
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: So our friends in the desert in Vegas think Tennessee is looking like an eight and four, seven and five, nine and three type.
- 49:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, what do you got?
- 49:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think eight and five is a really I mean, obviously, really no, the eight and a half wins is a really smart line.
- 49:54SPEAKER_02: I think over it, it comes down to four games.
- 49:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's Oklahoma, it's Bama, it's uh Georgia, and Florida.
- 50:04SPEAKER_02: Where's the Florida game?
- 50:05SPEAKER_02: Florida's away, and Georgia is, oh, and Bama's away.
- 50:10SPEAKER_02: So uh yeah, it's can can you win two of those?
- 50:13SPEAKER_02: Uh so we don't know how good Florida's gonna be.
- 50:16SPEAKER_02: Um win two of those and assume you win the rest.
- 50:18SPEAKER_02: I'm taking the over.
- 50:19SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 50:19SPEAKER_02: I'm taking the over.
- 50:20SPEAKER_02: Maybe a little orange-colored glasses, but everything I've heard out of camp, um, question marks obviously in some key places.
- 50:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, I don't think, and this is one of my bold takes, maybe.
- 50:31SPEAKER_02: I don't think quarterback is as big of a question as people think.
- 50:35SPEAKER_02: A lot of the offseason talk about Nico making the move.
- 50:38SPEAKER_02: He was a five-star, million-dollar man, whatever, whatever.
- 50:41SPEAKER_02: His production last year, very mid.
- 50:43SPEAKER_02: I think you'll see more production out of the quarterback here, more production out of the quarterback position this year than he did last year.
- 50:49SPEAKER_02: Full stop.
- 50:50SPEAKER_02: Running game's gonna be just as good.
- 50:51SPEAKER_02: Yep, defense might take a little step back.
- 50:54SPEAKER_02: I think that's good enough for nine.
- 50:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, Tennessee's won all, I think, first team All American Jab McCoy, the cornerback, and you're you're you're expecting him back in the first couple weeks.
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he'll be back.
- 51:04SPEAKER_02: He might be back by Georgia.
- 51:05SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 51:06SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 51:07SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't hate that.
- 51:09SPEAKER_01: I'm eight and a half is the right line.
- 51:12SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean, I think I think Tennessee is an eight and a half or nine, uh, or is it eight and four or nine and three team this year?
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: Um, I you know, I have a hard time.
- 51:19SPEAKER_01: I'm worried about uh Tennessee in Gainesville.
- 51:21SPEAKER_01: That's been the place of nightmares.
- 51:23SPEAKER_01: You guys know that.
- 51:23SPEAKER_01: It's been a real bugaboo.
- 51:24SPEAKER_01: It's been a real bugaboo, the the swamp.
- 51:27SPEAKER_01: Um, obviously winning in Tuscaloosa is tough as nails.
- 51:29SPEAKER_01: Georgia is gonna be super talented.
- 51:31SPEAKER_01: Georgia early at home.
- 51:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think it's gonna come down to can Tennessee is going to be very good.
- 51:36SPEAKER_01: Tennessee is going to compete again for national championships.
- 51:39SPEAKER_01: The question is, when is that going to happen?
- 51:41SPEAKER_01: It might not be until 2026.
- 51:43SPEAKER_01: I like five-star Mike Matthews, the wide receiver.
- 51:46SPEAKER_01: I want to see him develop.
- 51:47SPEAKER_01: Uh, one of my hot takes this season, we're talking about Mike, is about uh Deshaun Bishop, the running back.
- 51:52SPEAKER_01: I actually think he's actually better than Dylan Sampson.
- 51:54SPEAKER_01: So I think they're gonna be loaded in the backfield, they're gonna have lots of got lots of success carrying the ball.
- 51:58SPEAKER_01: And they've just shown, even though they've lost a lot on defense, the defense is still gonna be really good.
- 52:03SPEAKER_01: I just so you know, I if we're sitting here in December and it's Tennessee is seven and five or eleven-one, I don't think I'd really be shocked by either.
- 52:13SPEAKER_01: I think seven and five would shock me.
- 52:14SPEAKER_01: Okay, more than more than 11-1 more than 11-1 would shock you?
- 52:18SPEAKER_02: No.
- 52:19SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
- 52:20SPEAKER_02: 7-5 would shock me.
- 52:21SPEAKER_02: I think the the this the floor is eight and four.
- 52:26SPEAKER_02: Okay, it's right, but can you get one more win to hit the over there?
- 52:30SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, and and you know, the teams that we're playing have question marks the same as we do.
- 52:36SPEAKER_02: What's your fifth hardest game?
- 52:37SPEAKER_02: You're off the top of your head.
- 52:40SPEAKER_02: South Arkansas, we go at Mississippi State.
- 52:42SPEAKER_02: Vandy, maybe maybe Vandy, where he's got him at home.
- 52:45SPEAKER_01: Okay, all right.
- 52:46SPEAKER_01: So okay, so you so a confident eight-win floor.
- 52:48SPEAKER_01: Okay, I I get behind that.
- 52:50SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 52:50SPEAKER_01: Um, all right, let's move on.
- 52:52SPEAKER_01: Uh UVA.
- 52:53SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is easy for me.
- 52:54SPEAKER_01: Over uh under is five and a half.
- 52:56SPEAKER_01: That's the the line is even, it's one minus one ten.
- 52:58SPEAKER_01: They've had some injuries preseason, minus one ten.
- 53:01SPEAKER_01: I am still way over.
- 53:02SPEAKER_01: This schedule is super manageable.
- 53:04SPEAKER_01: There's a good chance they start three and oh, four and oh.
- 53:06SPEAKER_01: I'm actually going to the week four game Friday night, uh, where they're hosting Florida State in Charlottesville.
- 53:12SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna try and drag my buddy Mike with me that night as well.
- 53:14SPEAKER_01: Should be a fun game.
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: Um, this schedule is so manageable, manageable.
- 53:18SPEAKER_01: Um, UVA had a massive gift this offseason.
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: They had a top 25 transfer uh uh class this season nationally.
- 53:25SPEAKER_01: They brought in 29 transfer, I think it was.
- 53:28SPEAKER_01: Every single level on the two deep is better this season.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: Chandler Morris is the best quarterback they've had.
- 53:34SPEAKER_01: They did lose Malachi Fields, their best off to receiver, uh best off to player, frankly.
- 53:38SPEAKER_01: He's now playing for Notre Dame, which is a bummer.
- 53:40SPEAKER_01: Senker, the um second team All American free safety, is now a Baltimore Raven, I believe.
- 53:45SPEAKER_01: He got drafted.
- 53:45SPEAKER_01: So they've lost their two best players, but for depth-wise, they're there.
- 53:50SPEAKER_01: So with the schedule, with actually a true story, influx of talent in Charlottesville, give me the over.
- 53:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, you know, five and a half.
- 53:58SPEAKER_02: Go into a ball, baby.
- 53:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's an it's an over, it's an easy over for me.
- 54:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, that's this is kind of like my take.
- 54:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, looking at the schedule, the same take I have.
- 54:06SPEAKER_02: Well, I guess this year's a little different.
- 54:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, take Vandy on the over every year, and they've hit it.
- 54:11SPEAKER_02: Vandy's different this year.
- 54:12SPEAKER_02: I you know, so that's a different, different story.
- 54:14SPEAKER_02: But this is that concept.
- 54:16SPEAKER_02: You look at their schedule, it's I mean, there's five wins there before you even roll out the football.
- 54:23SPEAKER_02: So, can they win one?
- 54:24SPEAKER_02: That's it for me.
- 54:25SPEAKER_02: That's just I'm gonna keep it simple.
- 54:26SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, like it.
- 54:28SPEAKER_01: All right, G attack over is six and a half, a little higher.
- 54:31SPEAKER_01: Six and a half is uh uh juice to the under minus 142.
- 54:34SPEAKER_01: Over is plus 116.
- 54:36SPEAKER_01: So if you're bullish on the hokies, now it's your chance.
- 54:39SPEAKER_02: Um I like this line is is right like this.
- 54:44SPEAKER_02: I like these lines.
- 54:45SPEAKER_01: I like Kyron Drones.
- 54:46SPEAKER_01: I need him to be healthy and play.
- 54:48SPEAKER_01: I like the transfer running back from Bowling Green, he's gonna do well.
- 54:52SPEAKER_01: They had they made a replacement on defensive coordinator, it's a new guy coming in.
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: Um, schedule is tough.
- 54:58SPEAKER_01: Franchise got a lot of losable games, including um, I think the improved Wahoos.
- 55:03SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm taking the under.
- 55:06SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm I I think the smart the people in Vegas are telling me it's gonna be it's gonna be a six and six, five and seven type season.
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: I'm actually gonna see them game one um with uh friend of the podcast, Darren Stedman, in Atlanta, week one.
- 55:17SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited.
- 55:18SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited to see them shock the world against South Carolina.
- 55:20SPEAKER_01: Uh so I'll get a much better sense of this team in about 12 days, but too many losable games, not enough high profile go-to playmakers, new coordinator.
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: Brent Pry is doesn't seem like he's recruiting better.
- 55:33SPEAKER_01: Like it doesn't seem like if you're looking at the off behind the scenes momentum stuff, like I'm not seeing it in the recruiting, high school, or transfer.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: So I kind of think this is prize in the line.
- 55:44SPEAKER_01: We already called him being fired, so yeah.
- 55:46SPEAKER_02: Looking at the matchup, taking a you know, I think they've gotta maybe even pull an upset uh or two to to get to that six and six mark.
- 55:54SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah, hate to say it, um, but gotta go with the under here.
- 55:59SPEAKER_02: Gotta go with the under.
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: All right, very good.
- 56:01SPEAKER_01: Well, that wraps up our preview episode for 2025.
- 56:05SPEAKER_01: We got all those picks in.
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: Go get all those bets, make all that money.
- 56:08SPEAKER_01: Um, really quickly, we're gonna touch on, we're gonna throw in our week zero preview right now because frankly, it's pretty darn um short.
- 56:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, week zero is starts um on Saturday.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: There is one, there's actually, let's see, one, two, three, four, five.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: There's five games.
- 56:22SPEAKER_01: Um, one of them is good, one of them is a little interesting in Fresno State, Kansas.
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: If you really squint your eyes, um, if you're interested to see what Jalen Daniels can do.
- 56:30SPEAKER_01: UNLV uh is playing Idaho State.
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: UNLV is now the home of Dan Mullen.
- 56:36SPEAKER_01: Um, Anthony Kalander, former UBA quarterback.
- 56:39SPEAKER_01: You could talk into that.
- 56:40SPEAKER_01: Um, the backup quarterback is uh Alex Orgy.
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: Um, they're like the new last chance year.
- 56:44SPEAKER_01: Yes, they also have like Justin Flo and like Denver Harris and all these like profile.
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: Okay, fine.
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 56:51SPEAKER_01: Island of Mystic.
- 56:52SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 56:52SPEAKER_01: So, you know, if you want to see UNLV is a 25-point favorite against Idaho State, uh, that game's at four.
- 56:59SPEAKER_01: Um, but the one game, the headliner, the game is uh Farmageddon.
- 57:03SPEAKER_02: Uh in Dublin.
- 57:04SPEAKER_02: In Dublin.
- 57:05SPEAKER_02: For some reason.
- 57:05SPEAKER_01: Aviva, Aviva Stadium, uh, number 22, Iowa State, number 17, Kansas State.
- 57:11SPEAKER_01: They actually gave us a ranked matchup in week zero this year, which rules.
- 57:14SPEAKER_01: Um and it's at noon.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: Um I'm in Ireland.
- 57:17SPEAKER_01: Uh the line is Kansas State minus three, sometimes three and a half, over under is 49 and a half.
- 57:22SPEAKER_01: We've already talked about Kansas State a little bit.
- 57:24SPEAKER_01: Um I hate to do this in week one because I'm always wrong, but I'm going chalk, man.
- 57:29SPEAKER_01: Give me K-State to cover, give me the over.
- 57:31SPEAKER_01: I might parlay them both.
- 57:32SPEAKER_01: I am K-State.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: I just um I'm I just I I think I Rocco Beck's a good quarterback.
- 57:38SPEAKER_01: They lost all the receivers.
