Transcript
- 0:00Good morning, Grace Harbor!
- 0:03It’s Dan, and it is CHRISTMAS EVE!
- 0:06What an exciting day!
- 0:08It’s one of my busier days, but it’s also one of my favorite days
- 0:12of the whole year.
- 0:14And that’s because the Christmas Eve church service
- 0:16is probably my favorite service we do all year.
- 0:19One of my favorite parts of the service is the improvised live nativity.
- 0:24Do you know what that is?
- 0:25Let’s break it down.
- 0:27Nativity is one of the titles for the story of Jesus’ birth.
- 0:31Maybe you’ve seen a nativity set with figures that show Mary
- 0:35and Joseph and the baby Jesus, the shepherds, an angel or two,
- 0:39and sometimes the Wise Men - even a few animals.
- 0:42We actually have one where the characters from Charlie
- 0:45Brown are dressed up like characters in the Bible story.
- 0:48Snoopy is a sheep!
- 0:50Well, a live nativity is when real people do what the Charlie
- 0:54Brown characters do - dress up in costumes to help tell the story.
- 0:58But the extra wrinkle we add is that it’s an *improvised* live nativity.
- 1:03“Improvised” means we make it up as we go along.
- 1:07There are no assigned parts, and there have been no rehearsals.
- 1:12We have a whole bunch of costumes available, and as people arrive,
- 1:15they can volunteer to play the parts.
- 1:17Because it’s improvised and no one prepares ahead of time,
- 1:20it never goes perfectly.
- 1:22Sometimes people miss the cue to enter, or they stand in the wrong place.
- 1:27One year, one of our shepherds was a younger boy,
- 1:29and he quit halfway through because he got bored.
- 1:33He just laid down
- 1:34his staff, took off his costume, and walked back to sit with his family.
- 1:37It was hilarious!
- 1:40And believe it or not, that’s exactly why we do an improvised live nativity.
- 1:45We don’t want it to be perfect.
- 1:47An imperfect nativity where people aren’t sure where to go
- 1:51or what to do and are surprised by the things that happen
- 1:55- that’s about as true to the real thing as you can get!
- 1:58You see, God knew what was coming on Christmas,
- 2:02and an angel gave Mary and Joseph a little bit of a heads up,
- 2:05but for the most part, it was all a huge surprise!
- 2:09When Mary and Joseph showed up in Bethlehem,
- 2:12is there a nice hotel room waiting for them? No!
- 2:15In fact, there was no room for them at all in the place
- 2:18they had planned to stay, so they ended up with the animals.
- 2:22Then when Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, is born
- 2:26is there anyone around ready to throw a royal birthday party?
- 2:30Again - no!
- 2:32In fact, the first people God invited to meet
- 2:35Jesus were a bunch of shepherds - who lived outside,
- 2:39smelled terrible, and, as you can imagine, weren’t very popular.
- 2:43But it is *exactly* what God meant to do.
- 2:46If the good news of Jesus’ birth means something
- 2:49to the lowest of the low, then it means something to everyone!
- 2:54And then we
- 2:55have the Wise Men, who we sometimes we call the Three Kings.
- 2:58When they see the newborn baby Jesus, these powerful and respected people
- 3:03fall to their knees to worship him and give him very valuable gifts.
- 3:08You see, the Christmas story is super familiar for a lot of us,
- 3:12which can sometimes make us miss just how surprising it all was!
- 3:17And that’s got me thinking… when we practice setting our intentions
- 3:21on a day like Christmas Eve, it’s easy to think about familiar things first.
- 3:26We plan to have fun.
- 3:27We plan to finish wrapping presents.
- 3:30We plan to eat some cookies.
- 3:31Maybe some of you are planning to go to a Christmas Eve service in your town.
- 3:35But, what if we made our goal today
- 3:38keeping our eyes open for ways God can still surprise us?
- 3:43Take a few moments as a family
- 3:45and share a time when you were surprised by something good.
- 3:48Maybe it was a surprise dessert, a surprise visit from a friend,
- 3:53or a surprise win by your favorite sports team.
- 3:57When we remind ourselves that these kinds of things happen,
- 4:00we can look forward in hope to even more surprises!
- 4:04If you need more time, you a pause the podcast and I’ll be right
- 4:07here when you get back.
- 4:38What a fun way to start Christmas Eve, right?!
- 4:41You never know what God is going to do,
- 4:44but we can be sure it will always be full of love.
- 4:47Let’s close in prayer.
- 4:49As always, you can close your eyes and fold your hands, but it’s
- 4:53Christmas Eve, so I suspect
- 4:55there will be some wiggle prayers going on this morning.
- 4:59Dear God, we thank you for the parts of the Christmas story we know and love,
- 5:04and we thank you for the parts that can still surprise us.
- 5:07Keep our eyes open to see where you might still surprise us today.
- 5:12Amen. Okay, Grace Harbor!
- 5:14Go have an amazing Christmas Eve, and I’ll talk to you tonight.
