Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Baseball America's JJ Cooper is with us. We need you today, Jj.
- 0:10Speaker 1: There's a lot going on here, so we'll talk about
- 0:12Speaker 1: the Dylan Cruz and House getting option for the Nats,
- 0:15Speaker 1: among many other topics. I do want to start with
- 0:17Speaker 1: the baby Mets and get right into biz here. So
- 0:19Speaker 1: are the Mets just like, hey, let's just call up
- 0:21Speaker 1: any speedy athletic dude in the miners and try and
- 0:24Speaker 1: switch things up.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Does David Stearns?
- 0:28Speaker 3: I think I feel like he really is kind of
- 0:29Speaker 3: going back to like I'm with the Brewer still, you
- 0:31Speaker 3: know you can kind of do this and like, hey,
- 0:33Speaker 3: no one, will you know, Hey.
- 0:35Speaker 2: We go We're gonna do a youth movement. Will anyone notice?
- 0:37Speaker 3: No, you know it's being noticed because it's in It's
- 0:40Speaker 3: a little different when you're in New York. But I
- 0:42Speaker 3: will say, like, it's kind of bold, it's gutsy, but
- 0:45Speaker 3: at the same time it is if it works, it
- 0:51Speaker 3: they need kind of a shot of something, and they
- 0:54Speaker 3: have added some athleticism here. Morbido is very athletic. Aj
- 0:58Speaker 3: ewing is very athletic. You look at it now. If
- 1:02Speaker 3: nothing else, this should give them a kind of a
- 1:06Speaker 3: youth a youth injection, a speed injection, a defense injection
- 1:10Speaker 3: as well in the outfield. Like it's fascinating because if
- 1:14Speaker 3: you had said before the season, okay, Nolan mcclan, Carson
- 1:18Speaker 3: Bender in the lineup, okay, then if you said aj
- 1:20Speaker 3: Ewing is going to be added, that also seems to
- 1:23Speaker 3: make sense. But to say that they're going to have
- 1:25Speaker 3: at this point already have brought up four prominent prospects
- 1:30Speaker 3: in their three in the lineup at different times that
- 1:33Speaker 3: that that does seem seems more of something you expect
- 1:37Speaker 3: to say, Like the Guardians brought up their third outfield
- 1:40Speaker 3: prospect of the year, and it's may that Guardians, you
- 1:43Speaker 3: kind of expect that the Rays, you know, things like that,
- 1:45Speaker 3: you don't expect to hear that for the Mets.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Does the New York market New York media allow something
- 1:53Speaker 4: like this in a sense that well, you can, we
- 1:56Speaker 4: could never start the season with as many question as
- 2:00Speaker 4: we start as the Guardian starts, since you brought the
- 2:02Speaker 4: Guardians up. But reality is it's about winning games. But
- 2:08Speaker 4: the New York media doesn't want to read about the
- 2:11Speaker 4: Baseball America prospects. They want to read about how much
- 2:14Speaker 4: money did one of the richest, if not the richest
- 2:16Speaker 4: owner in baseball, spend on his roster for the season.
- 2:22Speaker 3: The thing I think, and you would know better about
- 2:24Speaker 3: this that I do, kind of what that environment's like.
- 2:26Speaker 3: But I think that it really comes down to you
- 2:29Speaker 3: don't get the runway that you get with a smaller
- 2:32Speaker 3: market team right like you can because if you come
- 2:35Speaker 3: up and you're do what Kevin McGonagall or South Stewart
- 2:38Speaker 3: did in April, if you do that in New York,
- 2:40Speaker 3: they're going to love you, right Like, if you can
- 2:42Speaker 3: go out there and right away perform, then hey, it's
- 2:46Speaker 3: a great move that you brought up this rookie. But
- 2:49Speaker 3: what's not allowed is is that okay that first fifty
- 2:52Speaker 3: seventy five plate appearances, there's an adjustment period and you're
- 2:56Speaker 3: kind of getting settled in and then like if what
- 3:00Speaker 3: Connor Griffin did in Pittsburgh, I think it goes a
- 3:03Speaker 3: little differently if Connor Griffin does that in New York,
- 3:07Speaker 3: right or if he does that in Boston. I think
- 3:08Speaker 3: there are a couple of markets out there where it
- 3:11Speaker 3: just is a little tougher to establish yourself right away,
- 3:14Speaker 3: and if you don't, you don't have as long to
- 3:17Speaker 3: get established. Connor Griffin, you know, looked a little bit okay,
- 3:20Speaker 3: it had some at bats. I would say that first
- 3:23Speaker 3: few weeks that were a little bit up and down,
- 3:25Speaker 3: but then you kind of got to be where we
- 3:27Speaker 3: expect him to be.
- 3:27Speaker 2: And it's not.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Shocking that a teenager turned twenty year old is going
- 3:31Speaker 3: to kind of get settled in. I just think in
- 3:34Speaker 3: New York we see that. We see that with veterans
- 3:36Speaker 3: in New York, don't we We see that with veterans
- 3:38Speaker 3: where it's like when they bring in a free agent,
- 3:41Speaker 3: there's usually it feels like there's like three different evaluations
- 3:45Speaker 3: of whether it was a great signing or a terrible signing.
- 3:48Speaker 3: That happens like depending on the month that you're in, right,
- 3:51Speaker 3: Like how many different opinions have there been on you know,
- 3:55Speaker 3: Jad Chisholm. But I would say the flip side is
- 3:57Speaker 3: we see what the Yankees. If you're a bin Ice,
- 4:00Speaker 3: the best possible thing to do is to be good,
- 4:02Speaker 3: but fly a little bit under the radar and so
- 4:05Speaker 3: that while they're focused on Anthony Volpi, the fans are
- 4:07Speaker 3: on the media, you can be the guy who kind
- 4:09Speaker 3: of performs the turnaround. It's like, oh, ben Rice has
- 4:11Speaker 3: been really good. That that's the kind of way maybe
- 4:14Speaker 3: Morbido can be that one. Morbido's good, but he's not
- 4:16Speaker 3: the same level of prospect prominence. I would say as
- 4:19Speaker 3: an ol McClane, as even an aj Ewing, maybe that
- 4:21Speaker 3: can help him slide it a little bit under the
- 4:24Speaker 3: radar while the aj Ewings and I'll take up little
- 4:26Speaker 3: bit more of the attention.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Right, Carson Binge obviously made the team. Obviously they kind
- 4:31Speaker 4: of left that lane pseudo open. Well, maybe he's got
- 4:35Speaker 4: to make the team, but clearly look like they wanted
- 4:37Speaker 4: him up there. His start hasn't been as good as
- 4:40Speaker 4: aj Ewing's start. Do you see aj Ewings whatever nine
- 4:45Speaker 4: eighty ops and Carson Binge's six' eighty ops?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Do you see it going?
- 4:51Speaker 4: Yeah? I want to see. I mean, you have him
- 4:53Speaker 4: even for people who are listening, his hands are even.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Are are they going to be the same or is
- 4:58Speaker 4: there something that's going to put one of them over
- 5:00Speaker 4: the top for this season?
- 5:02Speaker 3: Not career wise, I would say the thing that you
- 5:05Speaker 3: also do like with Ewing, is the defense in all
- 5:08Speaker 3: that Ewing's going to provide you provides value. This is
- 5:11Speaker 3: where like we talk about Connor Griffin. The value of
- 5:13Speaker 3: a guy when you bring up a guy who can
- 5:14Speaker 3: help in so many different ways Ewing. If Ewing starts
- 5:18Speaker 3: to slump offensively, the defense, the speeds should still provide
- 5:23Speaker 3: value for him. The funny thing about this, though, is
- 5:26Speaker 3: is I do think there's also a there is a
- 5:29Speaker 3: mindset I run into it all the time when talking
- 5:31Speaker 3: to fans right like that this player hasn't proven in
- 5:34Speaker 3: the big leagues. Well, the reality of it is, like
- 5:38Speaker 3: Bobashett has one hundred percent proven it in the big leagues.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Bobaschet has been a big league star. At the same time,
- 5:47Speaker 3: for Bobachhet right now, like he's not performing at the
- 5:51Speaker 3: level he wants to perform at that the Mets expect
- 5:54Speaker 3: him to perform at and obviously it's different.
- 5:56Speaker 2: But at the same time, at the end of the day,
- 5:58Speaker 2: if you say.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Why are the Mets where they are, it's going to
- 6:02Speaker 3: be probably more so the Marcus Semions and the Boba
- 6:06Speaker 3: Sheets figuring out a way to turn it around. But
- 6:09Speaker 3: I do think that bringing in this kind of youth
- 6:12Speaker 3: infusion and some of it kind of by necessary because
- 6:14Speaker 3: they've had injuries as well. It at least maybe takes
- 6:18Speaker 3: a little bit maybe, if anything else, maybe it takes
- 6:21Speaker 3: a little bit of attention off of those guys who
- 6:23Speaker 3: need like I know that Boba sheet.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Did you know have a nice night last night?
- 6:27Speaker 3: Although you know it was also one of the weirdest
- 6:30Speaker 3: exterting games we'll ever see. The Mets can't be this
- 6:34Speaker 3: bad over the long, over the course of the season,
- 6:36Speaker 3: they shouldn't be this bad. But I do think it's
- 6:38Speaker 3: going to be a little bit of youth movement. Plus more,
- 6:42Speaker 3: probably more importantly is having the veterans who you are
- 6:45Speaker 3: paying get back to more of the level you expect
- 6:48Speaker 3: their production to be.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Some wireless plans can get a little bit crazy, a
- 6:55Speaker 1: little bit off the charts. Expensive. Mint Mobile can get
- 7:00Speaker 1: you started with three months of premium wireless for fifteen
- 7:04Speaker 1: bucks a month.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Could it pretty good?
- 7:06Speaker 5: I like that the way gas prices are going up, Scott,
- 7:09Speaker 5: We've got to keep more mobile plan down and mint
- 7:12Speaker 5: Mobile is your location to keep your mobile plan down.
- 7:15Speaker 5: Can add family members. You can do all that for
- 7:17Speaker 5: just fifteen bucks a month.
- 7:19Speaker 1: That's less than a drink in many cities these days
- 7:22Speaker 1: if you like bougie drinks. All plans come with high
- 7:25Speaker 1: speed data and unlimited talk and text delivered on the
- 7:27Speaker 1: nation's largest five G network. If you like your money,

- 7:53Speaker 5: JJ the That's been an interesting movie about Dylan Cruz
- 7:55Speaker 5: up and they sent House down, which was shocking to
- 7:58Speaker 5: me because he had a two homer game. Not that
- 7:59Speaker 5: long ago. Has Dylan Cruz made the necessary adjustments to
- 8:02Speaker 5: be a formidable big league player that his draft stock warranted,
- 8:08Speaker 5: because even in Triple A he wasn't doing that much
- 8:12Speaker 5: where you're like, wow, look at Dylan Cruz go off.
- 8:16Speaker 3: I don't see it yet, to be honest, like, I
- 8:17Speaker 3: tried to watch some of what he was doing in
- 8:19Speaker 3: Triple A and it doesn't seem like he's made Like
- 8:21Speaker 3: I think he could be better than he was when
- 8:23Speaker 3: he was sent down. But if you said, have we
- 8:26Speaker 3: seen a transformation where now he's hitting for more impact,
- 8:30Speaker 3: Like this has always been the question with a Cruise,
- 8:32Speaker 3: Like I I like to say, when he was coming up,
- 8:36Speaker 3: and again I don't want to like he was a
- 8:38Speaker 3: top prospect for US.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I don't. I'm not trying to poop who they.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Was, but like I really kind of thought of the
- 8:42Speaker 3: try to say at the time, at least personally, I've
- 8:45Speaker 3: viewed it as James Woods was here, and then Dylan
- 8:47Speaker 3: Cruz would hopefully be a good wingman, kind of an
- 8:49Speaker 3: Adam Eaton type, and I'm eating that was pretty good.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Now we're hoping can he get to that kind of
- 8:55Speaker 3: Adam Eaton type.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I don't see impact player here as much. So far.
- 9:00Speaker 3: It looks like more like a good complimentary player. Can
- 9:03Speaker 3: he play good defense? Can he get on base? Can
- 9:05Speaker 3: he steal some bags? Can he occasionally run into one?
- 9:08Speaker 3: I would say that that's kind of more of the question,
- 9:11Speaker 3: But I also like, I'm kind of interested. The Nationals
- 9:15Speaker 3: are in this weird world right now where they're both
- 9:19Speaker 3: I'd say offensively a little better than maybe everyone expected,
- 9:23Speaker 3: but it's still very much a team in transition. I
- 9:26Speaker 3: think that there's all almost kind of an evaluative state
- 9:29Speaker 3: like with a guy like Cruz, where it's like you
- 9:32Speaker 3: can keep him down for three four months and try
- 9:34Speaker 3: to totally transform him, see if you can really help
- 9:37Speaker 3: him find another level. But there's no guarantee that's going
- 9:41Speaker 3: to take, and at some point they're gonna need to
- 9:44Speaker 3: figure out with Cruse. Okay, is this a guy who's
- 9:47Speaker 3: part of our long term plan or is he not?
- 9:49Speaker 2: I'll take like C. J.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Abrams kind of came into the season probably on in
- 9:54Speaker 3: that question as well, and he seems to have taken
- 9:55Speaker 3: the steps towards like Okay, this looks like Okay, c. J.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Abrams can but eventually fit into that or at least
- 10:01Speaker 3: be a good trade piece that they decide that the
- 10:03Speaker 3: rebuilding piece, you know, real building project is going to
- 10:06Speaker 3: take a lot of years. Unfortunately for all these guys,
- 10:08Speaker 3: none of them pitch.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Well, yeah, they need some pitching, that's fair. But my
- 10:14Speaker 4: question is specifically about Dylan Cruz, but the state of
- 10:17Speaker 4: the game too. Is this a prime case of why
- 10:21Speaker 4: Major League Baseball can't take away lower level minor leagues
- 10:26Speaker 4: just for the big time college programs. I mean, we
- 10:29Speaker 4: see how poorly LSU did this year in college baseball
- 10:33Speaker 4: we see how like guys get called up with little
- 10:37Speaker 4: minor league experience and there's a adjustment period in the
- 10:42Speaker 4: minor leagues that you need to learn how to be
- 10:45Speaker 4: able to change your swing to different types of pitches,
- 10:49Speaker 4: to different level of pitching, from a guy throwing a
- 10:51Speaker 4: hundred that has no idea where it's going to a
- 10:53Speaker 4: guy throwing eighty nine to ninety one that will probably
- 10:57Speaker 4: never pitch in the big leagues.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Okay, these are not gonna be the greatest examples because
- 11:02Speaker 3: both of these are guys who are not going to
- 11:04Speaker 3: be stars in the big leagues, right, But we saw
- 11:07Speaker 3: Eric Sarentola make it up with the Royals recently Reliever,
- 11:10Speaker 3: and I was just we've just updated our top thirties
- 11:12Speaker 3: and I was just writing up and pierced George for them.
- 11:15Speaker 3: And both of those guys were guys who went to college, right,
- 11:18Speaker 3: And if you think of college as a developmental, like, okay,
- 11:22Speaker 3: that's going to be where the development happens, and then
- 11:24Speaker 3: we can lop off more.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Levels of the miners.
- 11:27Speaker 3: They didn't pitch, and it's understandable because they're both through
- 11:31Speaker 3: one hundred miles an hour.
- 11:32Speaker 2: But if you don't throw strikes.
- 11:35Speaker 3: You very quickly can kind of get banished from the bullpen. Understandably,
- 11:38Speaker 3: you are not in college, you are not at major
- 11:42Speaker 3: D one programs, you're not at a Amsippi State, you know,
- 11:45Speaker 3: or somewhere like that, to just kind of well, we're
- 11:48Speaker 3: going to give you innings and see what happens. You're
- 11:51Speaker 3: going to go out there, and if you don't, get out,
- 11:52Speaker 3: so they're going to get someone who does. Those are
- 11:54Speaker 3: examples of guys. Pierce George basically walked everybody he faced
- 11:59Speaker 3: and never through.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I don't think if you added up all.
- 12:02Speaker 3: His college innings, it came up probably less than fifty.
- 12:05Speaker 2: In three years. Right, But so what did the White
- 12:08Speaker 2: Sox do.
- 12:09Speaker 3: They just hand him the ball, and they said, you're
- 12:11Speaker 3: going to go out there and if you succeed, great,
- 12:13Speaker 3: and if you don't, we're still gonna give you the
- 12:15Speaker 3: ball and we're gonna keep working with you and you're
- 12:18Speaker 3: gonna get better and better. And he walked everybody last year.
- 12:21Speaker 3: But this year he's figured it out a little bit.
- 12:24Speaker 3: He's already gotten advanced up another you know, got promotion
- 12:27Speaker 3: to another level. He's not walking anybody throws a hundred.
- 12:30Speaker 3: There are guys like that, there are the guys who
- 12:33Speaker 3: Paul Schemes. Yet do you need the miners for Paul Schemes?
- 12:35Speaker 2: Probably not.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Paul Schemes was fully ready to go the minute he
- 12:39Speaker 3: walked off the mound, and you know for LSU, but
- 12:43Speaker 3: most guys aren't going to have that kind of path.
- 12:45Speaker 2: And the.
- 12:48Speaker 3: More we lop off minor league levels and the more
- 12:51Speaker 3: that you reduce the rosters, the more you're kind of, yeah,
- 12:56Speaker 3: you're sometimes you're always going to get rid of some
- 12:59Speaker 3: ORG players who were never to make the majors anyway,
- 13:01Speaker 3: But every time you do that, you're also probably getting
- 13:03Speaker 3: rid of someone who would have made the majors. And
- 13:06Speaker 3: you just you never will know if you do that,
- 13:09Speaker 3: because we're seeing it right now with the one sixty
- 13:12Speaker 3: five right like you have with one hundred and sixty
- 13:14Speaker 3: five player minor league roster in the US, you are
- 13:17Speaker 3: having players released who I would have gotten another year,
- 13:21Speaker 3: another two years, and we see right.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Now, we see all the time.
- 13:24Speaker 3: You know, there are pictures in the majors right now,
- 13:26Speaker 3: we see if we saw with the WBC right with
- 13:28Speaker 3: a guy like Emmanuel Dajesus who was pitching in the KBO,
- 13:32Speaker 3: bouncing around and I'm not sinking unfortunately, I'm listing all
- 13:36Speaker 3: these relievers. Sam Antonacci is probably a better example of
- 13:38Speaker 3: a guy who was probably viewed as an ORG guy
- 13:41Speaker 3: at one point, but he kept grinding, he kept improving,
- 13:45Speaker 3: and now that guy's an every day regular for the
- 13:47Speaker 3: White Sox in the outfield. Those kind of development success
- 13:50Speaker 3: stories come from having time to let players develop and
- 13:56Speaker 3: to be honest, to let players fail in an environment
- 14:00Speaker 3: where failure is not the worst thing if failure brings
- 14:03Speaker 3: with it learning. Because in college baseball it's great. I
- 14:07Speaker 3: love college baseball, been watching it today, but college baseball
- 14:10Speaker 3: is about winning, as it should be. That's the idea
- 14:13Speaker 3: of the sport. There's development, but development falls way behind winning.
- 14:16Speaker 3: In the minor leagues, it is a developmental process and
- 14:19Speaker 3: winning is understandably secondary. That allows guys to fail to
- 14:23Speaker 3: then eventually succeed.
- 14:25Speaker 4: What do you have on We missed it about mister
- 14:28Speaker 4: Morobido and what he's going to bring because we hit
- 14:32Speaker 4: on the Mets and then I completely forgot to even
- 14:34Speaker 4: ask about.
- 14:36Speaker 3: So the thing that I will say with him, we
- 14:38Speaker 3: kind of talked about this a little bit.
- 14:40Speaker 2: I want to make sure I give.
- 14:41Speaker 3: You the proper just updated yesterday ranking we had Morobido
- 14:46Speaker 3: ranked as.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Where did we have him on here?
- 14:50Speaker 3: Thirteen right on the So he's not again, not the
- 14:52Speaker 3: same level of prospect that we're talking about with an
- 14:55Speaker 3: aj Ewing with a Carson bench, we're top hundred. No,
- 14:59Speaker 3: that's may update. I'm sorry, that's the old update, Morbido.
- 15:02Speaker 3: That's why I want to make sure that this is right.
- 15:04Speaker 3: More Abido was ranked, had moved up and was currently
- 15:08Speaker 3: ranking I won't find it on nine nine on the
- 15:13Speaker 3: updated list. But speed, there's speed and hitting ability here.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Now, I do think.
- 15:19Speaker 3: There is a chance in the long run that like,
- 15:22Speaker 3: is it a great fit to have him and aj
- 15:25Speaker 3: Ewing there together?
- 15:27Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 15:28Speaker 3: I think that kind of like you want maybe a
- 15:31Speaker 3: little bit more kind of like a it may be
- 15:35Speaker 3: that his value is a little bit duplicative with Ajewing.
- 15:39Speaker 3: But at the same time, again like in the short run,
- 15:42Speaker 3: especially while they've had some injuries at all, like adding
- 15:45Speaker 3: some more speed, some more defense, some more hitting ability
- 15:48Speaker 3: out there, and again another guy who could be I
- 15:50Speaker 3: would say right now where he is kind of a
- 15:52Speaker 3: little bit more of a complimentary player, not like the
- 15:54Speaker 3: middle of the lineup thumper, but a complimentary player who
- 15:57Speaker 3: kind of hopefully lengthens your lineup.
- 15:58Speaker 2: A little bit could be very valuable.
- 16:01Speaker 3: They still do have some other if they go full
- 16:04Speaker 3: youth movement here they do. I still think we could
- 16:06Speaker 3: see like a Jacob Riemer at some point this year.
- 16:09Speaker 3: You know, they still have you know, we'll see if
- 16:11Speaker 3: Ryan Clifford could end up hitting, you know, slugging some
- 16:13Speaker 3: homers from them at some point, like the Jonah Tong
- 16:16Speaker 3: who is our Minor League.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Pittcher of the year.
- 16:18Speaker 3: If the Mets are going to go full youth movement,
- 16:20Speaker 3: there is The system has gotten better in recent years,
- 16:23Speaker 3: and we are seeing some of the effects of that.
- 16:25Speaker 3: At the same time, this is more prospects than I
- 16:27Speaker 3: expected to see up for the for the Mets this
- 16:29Speaker 3: quickly in the season.
- 16:32Speaker 4: We love our dog Bella, who splays out in the
- 16:35Speaker 4: open sun on our floor like she's an underwear model.
- 16:38Speaker 4: And that's why we love her so much. To scratch
- 16:40Speaker 4: her belly.
- 16:42Speaker 2: She's a cutie, that Bella.

- 17:21Speaker 1: Insurance is underwritten by either Independence American Insurance Company or
- 17:24Speaker 1: United States Fire Insurance Company and produced by PTZ Insurance
- 17:28Speaker 1: Agency Limited. The ASPCA is not an insurance and is
- 17:31Speaker 1: not engaged in the business of insurance. So I want
- 17:34Speaker 1: to finish with this JJ. I think this is fascinating
- 17:36Speaker 1: on a day when unfortunately for Royce Lewis he was optioned.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Mickey Moniac has had a bang and start to the year.
- 17:44Speaker 1: They're back to back years number one overall picks. So
- 17:48Speaker 1: your thoughts on you know how the journey can go
- 17:50Speaker 1: for one to one.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Not all one ones are created the same, And that's
- 17:56Speaker 3: one of the things is tough, right. I think Mickey
- 17:58Speaker 3: Moniac's the perfect is this like even at that time,
- 18:03Speaker 3: that was the year where it felt like there was
- 18:05Speaker 3: no number one pick, right, Like the Phillies were a
- 18:09Speaker 3: little bit screwed, to be honest, Like they were something
- 18:11Speaker 3: where you pick one one and everyone thinks, oh, you're
- 18:14Speaker 3: picking one one, so you're going to get a star.
- 18:16Speaker 3: And it's like there were some years. You look at
- 18:17Speaker 3: that twenty sixteen draft, you can now in hindsight you
- 18:21Speaker 3: look at it's like maybe he was fine to be
- 18:23Speaker 3: the one one pick because you look at one through
- 18:25Speaker 3: ten on that list.
- 18:26Speaker 2: And there's just not really a star to be found.
- 18:33Speaker 3: And that's one thing that we see, like Royce Lewis's year,
- 18:37Speaker 3: there are some guys you can look back on it. Obviously,
- 18:39Speaker 3: it's funny. It's the high school guys, right. It's like
- 18:41Speaker 3: Hunter Green from that class, much more than a Brenda
- 18:43Speaker 3: McKay or a Kyle Wright. But there were some guys
- 18:46Speaker 3: you could say, Okay, maybe you should have gone that
- 18:47Speaker 3: direction rather than Royce. Royce has obviously had a lot
- 18:50Speaker 3: of injuries and we'll still see the totality's career is
- 18:53Speaker 3: not known, but I do think like, like we see
- 18:56Speaker 3: a year like twenty twenty four that we love to
- 18:58Speaker 3: talk about now, where we've already seen most of those
- 19:00Speaker 3: guys kind of come up from the top of that
- 19:03Speaker 3: class and a lot of cases really not just performed,
- 19:06Speaker 3: but really provide impact already. Not every drafts like that,
- 19:10Speaker 3: this one, we'll see. This one I think has kind
- 19:12Speaker 3: of a couple of guys at the top. I think
- 19:15Speaker 3: a Rack Schlawski, a Grady Emerson could kind of fit
- 19:17Speaker 3: in that really good top of.
- 19:19Speaker 2: The draft class kind of guys. But there are a
- 19:21Speaker 2: lot more.
- 19:22Speaker 3: You know, there have been some years recently where it's
- 19:24Speaker 3: like who you taking one, and it's like, well, there's
- 19:27Speaker 3: not really that guy that you want. Like it's always
- 19:30Speaker 3: great when you have that that Adlie Rushman Bobby Witt
- 19:33Speaker 3: Junior debate, or you have that Steven Strasburg gear that
- 19:35Speaker 3: Bryce Harper year. Some years it's like, Okay, you want
- 19:39Speaker 3: Mickey Moniac or do you want Corey Ray or do
- 19:41Speaker 3: you want and you know, you just kind of go
- 19:42Speaker 3: down the list and you're like, there really wasn't a
- 19:44Speaker 3: guy who stood out as a clear the guy that
- 19:48Speaker 3: you point to and say that's what a one to
- 19:49Speaker 3: one prospect look like. To Moniac's credit, he has bounced back.
- 19:53Speaker 2: It's taken him a while.
- 19:55Speaker 3: You know, he's still probably a little bit too aggressive
- 19:58Speaker 3: at the play at times, but he's making an him
- 20:00Speaker 3: impact in Colorado, and hey, credit to him, because it
- 20:03Speaker 3: is not easy.
- 20:04Speaker 2: I would also say it.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Cannot be easy to be the one one pick because
- 20:09Speaker 3: there is an attention that comes with that. There's a focus,
- 20:12Speaker 3: and there's an expectation. You know, we were talking about
- 20:14Speaker 3: Dylan Cruse a minute ago. Dylan Cruz kind of fortunate
- 20:18Speaker 3: for him, like he didn't go one, but like he's
- 20:21Speaker 3: always going to be compared to Paul Schemes because there
- 20:23Speaker 3: were teammates and they.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Also went at the top of that draft.
- 20:26Speaker 3: And that's got to be a hard thing to live
- 20:27Speaker 3: up to because you're trying to live up to comparing
- 20:30Speaker 3: to one of the best players of the last decade.
- 20:33Speaker 3: And one one kind of puts a again in the
- 20:36Speaker 3: Mickey mo In royce Lewis case, one one puts a
- 20:39Speaker 3: spotlight on you that it's a little different if you
- 20:42Speaker 3: go one two.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Yeah, right, and if you're not superstar potential, it's not
- 20:46Speaker 1: one of those years. Then it really puts a lot
- 20:49Speaker 1: on you and the team. Fans being they missed, like
- 20:51Speaker 1: you said, in some years are like, wait where did
- 20:54Speaker 1: they miss? Not two, not three, not four? You have
- 20:56Speaker 1: to go deep down the list to find someone that's
- 20:58Speaker 1: a star.
- 21:00Speaker 3: I'll just throw out for next year, we're gonna have
- 21:01Speaker 3: a fascinating new debate, which is we could have Dax Whitney,
- 21:04Speaker 3: who was looking like he was going to be the
- 21:06Speaker 3: number one prospect for next year's draft, and he blew
- 21:09Speaker 3: out his elbow. We've never seen like, can a guy
- 21:13Speaker 3: go one one because he should be back throwing by then,
- 21:17Speaker 3: right right around that time. But can a guy go
- 21:19Speaker 3: one to one who hasn't pitched in a game official
- 21:22Speaker 3: game in a year plus. That'll be an interesting thing
- 21:25Speaker 3: in twenty seven. We don't we don't need to get
- 21:26Speaker 3: too far ahead. We still have the twenty sees.
- 21:28Speaker 4: If it's about the money, if it's about the money,
- 21:30Speaker 4: come on all these A lot of these are they're
- 21:32Speaker 4: making a decision based on money. Guys are not going
- 21:34Speaker 4: one to one all the time because of their one
- 21:38Speaker 4: one ability.
- 21:39Speaker 3: And that's what I will say though, is is that's
- 21:41Speaker 3: where its struggle to find the examples of I know
- 21:46Speaker 3: we can point to like with Henry Davis again, another
- 21:49Speaker 3: case of a guy going one to one where it's
- 21:51Speaker 3: like no one was like, this is clearly the one
- 21:54Speaker 3: one guy. But when a Henry Davis goes yes, they
- 21:56Speaker 3: got Bubba Chandler in that class too.
- 21:59Speaker 2: But you never go wrong.
- 22:01Speaker 3: The thing I will just say, like I will save
- 22:03Speaker 3: for this year with the White Sox. If you want
- 22:06Speaker 3: to take Grady Emerson or Von Lackey because you flat
- 22:10Speaker 3: out just think they're the best player, they're a better
- 22:12Speaker 3: player than rok Skolowski. Okay, that makes tons of sense.
- 22:16Speaker 3: If you are convicted by that, now it's a danger
- 22:18Speaker 3: because if Rokslawski ends up being the star that some.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Expect, it's going to look bad.
- 22:22Speaker 3: But if you think that Rock Scholowski might be a star,
- 22:26Speaker 3: but you can get one of the other guys for
- 22:28Speaker 3: a couple million less and then spread that around, that's
- 22:31Speaker 3: a tougher thing to do because at the end of
- 22:33Speaker 3: the day, if you get a Paul Skien's at the
- 22:35Speaker 3: top of the class, you know, or a guy of
- 22:39Speaker 3: again that type of talent, you never go wrong, right
- 22:42Speaker 3: Like if you get the guy, if you get a star.
- 22:44Speaker 3: It doesn't matter what anyone else does. I mean, in hindsight,
- 22:47Speaker 3: the Orioles chose Adley Rushman and Bobby Wit juniors ended
- 22:50Speaker 3: up being a better player. But no one's gonna say
- 22:52Speaker 3: you were crazy to take Addli Rushman. Aliy Rushman has
- 22:54Speaker 3: been an all star catcher.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Even if the guy.
- 22:56Speaker 3: Who goes after him ends up being better, you still
- 22:58Speaker 3: got a guy and a guy. It was logically the
- 23:01Speaker 3: pick at the time because you had this track record of.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Him being a star on a great college team.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Multiple year track record, athleticism, all that. If you take
- 23:10Speaker 3: if you let that guy go because you wanted to
- 23:12Speaker 3: save a little bit of money. The example I always
- 23:14Speaker 3: go back to is two thousand and five and Matt Bush,
- 23:18Speaker 3: and it's like, if you take Matt Bush with Justin
- 23:20Speaker 3: Verlander on the board because Matt Bush is local and
- 23:23Speaker 3: he'll sign for less, that's something you're probably gonna end
- 23:27Speaker 3: up regretting.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a problem exactly. I hate the money saving
- 23:32Speaker 1: if there's somebody better that you know is better within
- 23:34Speaker 1: the org. There's definitely situations where you like, was that
- 23:37Speaker 1: third pick, you know, that third round pick worth it?
- 23:39Speaker 1: At the extra cash you were given we've gone over
- 23:41Speaker 1: that plenty of times on Hot Sheet, which is coming
- 23:43Speaker 1: up later. JJ good catching up, Thanks for hopping on
- 23:46Speaker 1: with this memory.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Thank you guys,
