- 0:24Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:30Amen. Well, you know, thinking of
- 0:32that, I, I wanted to start off with the question.
- 0:35You've heard the phrase, I'm sure the struggle is real, which
- 0:38is this. The struggle is real means that
- 0:40it's or just as a phrase acknowledging the genuine and
- 0:45significant challenges and difficulties we face in everyday
- 0:49life. If you, if you can agree with
- 0:51that statement, the struggle is real, I'd like to just say, hey,
- 0:53just raise your hand real quick. The struggle is real.
- 0:56Most of us, right? Most of us, if you, if you would
- 0:59say, I don't agree with that. I mean, hey, we want your life.
- 1:02I think we covet a little bit of that life.
- 1:05Because as I think of that phrase, I would say that that's
- 1:08a reality that doesn't really discriminate, that the struggle
- 1:12is real, applies to everyone, regardless of age, race, our
- 1:16gender, our socio economic class, you know, think the
- 1:21struggle is real. I would even say applies to both
- 1:25a believer in Jesus but also to a non believer in Jesus, but
- 1:31also excuse me, to even a believer in Jesus.
- 1:35Jesus he acknowledges that he said it in a different way in
- 1:38John chapter 16 verse 33. He acknowledges this day-to-day
- 1:43struggle, but with promise. And that's what I love about
- 1:46Jesus. He keeps it real, right?
- 1:48But with a promise. So in John chapter 16 verse 33,
- 1:53Jesus would say it this way. He says these things.
- 1:55I have spoken to you that in me you may have peace in this
- 1:59world. The struggle is real.
- 2:01Now in this world you will have tribulation, but be of good
- 2:05cheer. I have overcome the world and as
- 2:10we consider this struggle is real or what the culture would
- 2:14say the struggle is real. I, I would say there's probably
- 2:18another term and as a follower of Jesus that we should adopt is
- 2:23yes, the struggle is indeed real, but I would even share
- 2:27with you today and have you to process that the battle is real.
- 2:32The battle is real and you think about what the Bible refers to
- 2:36or what we have termed spiritual warfare.
- 2:40Spiritual warfare if you you can hold your place in Psalm 73 and
- 2:45turn to the book of Ephesians chapter 6.
- 2:47I'm sure most of us are familiar with the idea of the armor of
- 2:51God or what's revealed as spiritual warfare, but I want
- 2:55you to see it in your Bibles this evening in Ephesians
- 2:59chapter 6, verse 10 at the as the struggle is real, the battle
- 3:08is real, it tells us this. Ephesians 6 verse 10.
- 3:12Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of
- 3:16His might. Put on the whole armor of God,
- 3:19that you may be able to stand against the Wiles of the devil.
- 3:23For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against
- 3:26principalities, against powers, against rulers of darkness of
- 3:31this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the
- 3:34heavenly places. That our battle is one that has
- 3:39even been waged by the enemy of our soul.
- 3:41We see that in verse 11. It says the stand against the
- 3:45Wiles of the devil or the tactics of the devil.
- 3:49And I want to put up a few things.
- 3:50There'll be a slide you might see.
- 3:52But I, I believe that most times in spiritual warfare, what does
- 3:56it look like and how is it manifested in our life?
- 3:59Often times I've noticed in my life I've noticed in the life of
- 4:02those I've been able to walk alongside often starts with
- 4:06words with the letter D I've thought of doubt that a lot of
- 4:10times spiritual warfare can manifest in a way of doubting
- 4:15you think that was really the first attack that Satan had was
- 4:19to get Adam and Eve to doubt God's word.
- 4:22Did God really say and that same type of while of the enemy upon
- 4:28our life. You think of distraction and I
- 4:31love that prayer point of walking in the will of God and
- 4:34knowing the will of God and going in the way of obedience in
- 4:37the will of God. So of course the tactic of the
- 4:40enemy would be to distract us from that disobedience that a
- 4:46lot of times even as I was praying and LED to pray as we
- 4:49closed off give 10. It's easy to be in a place to
- 4:53not do the right thing, especially when it's
- 4:56challenging. That's a level of of spiritual
- 4:59warfare even becoming manifesting to a place of
- 5:02disobedience. You think of discontentment, and
- 5:05we'll see that here in the in Psalm 73 that you see
- 5:09discontentment wove through here in a level of spiritual warfare
- 5:13where you look around at others and covet and want and wish that
- 5:19discontentment dissatisfied with what God may have had the lot he
- 5:23has for us, and even depression. You think spiritual warfare can
- 5:27a lot of times be shown and aware of in a place of just
- 5:32overwhelming sadness, overwhelming just being
- 5:36debilitated and because the ultimate tactic or whatever word
- 5:40and they they don't only have to be of course, words that begin
- 5:43with D. But we know in John chapter 10,
- 5:46verse 10, Jesus says that the purpose of the thief is to
- 5:49steal, to kill and to destroy and the ultimate plan and tactic
- 5:55of the enemy. And so as we go to Psalm 73,
- 5:59another word, of course, I didn't put up on the slide
- 6:02behind me, but really one that I found in my life that can be one
- 6:07of the strongest way that spiritual warfare will come to
- 6:11the surface. One of the strongest attacks
- 6:14that I felt, and I'm sure many in this room, as I think of the
- 6:17word the struggle is real or the phrase the struggle is real or
- 6:20the battle is real, is the word discouragement.
- 6:23Psalm 73, I believe we're going to see the author here deeply
- 6:28struggling in a time of discouragement.
- 6:31It goes from, but going from an attitude of discouragement and
- 6:36ending like I pray that we would, with having a right
- 6:40perspective, a godly perspective.
- 6:43Now as we go to the book of Psalms, of course, the largest
- 6:46book of all the Bible covers 150 chapters.
- 6:50But the book of Psalms is actually broken up into five
- 6:53sections or five books within itself.
- 6:56And book 3 of Psalms is where we pick up in Psalm 73.
- 7:01And most of the Psalms, of course, are or the main author
- 7:05is David, but this book 3 of Psalms, which Pat it covers from
- 7:10Psalm 73 to Psalm 89 is the main author is actually a man Asaph
- 7:17or his descendants. He was, you know, ordained as a
- 7:22temple choir leader or a worship leader.
- 7:25You find you can find out about him in First Chronicles.
- 7:29The book of First Chronicles Chapter 6 and chapter 25 is a
- 7:32few of the mentions of who Asaph is.
- 7:35But very likely when you read the context of this third book
- 7:38of the Psalms that spans from chapter 73 through 89, you'll
- 7:42see that it probably wasn't just the man Asaph, the one mentioned
- 7:47in First Chronicles that was writing those, but him and his
- 7:51descendants. But knowing that and just
- 7:54knowing that Asaph was one of the temple musicians, I think
- 7:57that's an important distinction to make as we go to verse 1.
- 8:01So notice with me Psalm 73, verse 1.
- 8:05He says truly God is good to Israel and to such who are pure
- 8:10in heart. And as you look at verse 1, you
- 8:13would say that doesn't sound like discouragement.
- 8:15And I would agree. I think, you know, for Asaph, he
- 8:19knew about God. I mean, he was trained in
- 8:24worship. He was an anointed man that was,
- 8:28I'm sure, well educated in the things of God.
- 8:32And, you know, I think there's a truth that is, is for all of us
- 8:35to grasp today, that probably most of us in this room have the
- 8:40right answer about God, who is Jesus.
- 8:44You know, what did he do for us? We, we can have the right Bible
- 8:48answer where especially, you know, you can share counsel with
- 8:51somebody and give right answer. And there's this idea of what's
- 8:55called formal theology that I know the right answer in my
- 8:59head, But what we're going to see here is there's a difference
- 9:03between our formal theology and our functioning theology.
- 9:08Because what I know about God and how I live don't always line
- 9:12up. And I can say that transparently
- 9:15as a pastor, I'm sure even as I share this message on
- 9:19discouragement for those who know me well, they may be
- 9:22wondering, I wonder if you read your own sermon notes or watch
- 9:26your own thing because the the idea of, like I said,
- 9:29discouragement being one of the strongest struggles, right?
- 9:33But verse one remains true. And let it be true not just in
- 9:37my mind, but also my heart. Again, he says, truly God is
- 9:41good to Israel to such or as pure as in heart.
- 9:44But notice in verse 2 is where we start to see this
- 9:47discouragement. He says, But As for me, my feet
- 9:50had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped, for I was
- 9:55envious of the boastful when I saw the prosperity of the
- 9:59wicked. And this discouragement we see
- 10:02in verse two had almost got the better of Asaph.
- 10:06He said my feet had almost stumbled, my steps nearly
- 10:10slipped. And why?
- 10:12Verse three? He says, because I was envious
- 10:14of the boastful and when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
- 10:19A key point that I want to give us here this evening is this,
- 10:23that discouraged people will often think too much about
- 10:28themselves and, and too and or others and too little about God
- 10:35and, and many times when we're in a place of discouragement.
- 10:40That's just it, where our eyes and our focus are off of the
- 10:45Lord. They're on myself.
- 10:47They're on my circumstances. They're on why does so and so
- 10:51have this and even what we're going to see with ASAP.
- 10:53He was not just looking about his neighbor or his Christian
- 10:57brother, his believing brother. He was looking at the
- 11:01unbelieving world. Why do they have it so good and
- 11:06why do I have it the way I do? Right?
- 11:09It was my foot had almost slipped.
- 11:12As we continue on in verse 4 through 14, what I want you to
- 11:16do is I want you to notice because I won't necessarily go
- 11:20through each verse in detail, but I want you to notice all the
- 11:24false conclusions, all the times that maybe there was an unmet
- 11:28expectation or even this feeling of discontentment that you see
- 11:34ASAP. Articulate the discouragement
- 11:36he's articulating here. But notice in verse four he
- 11:40says, for there are no pangs in their death, but their strength
- 11:44is firm. They are not in trouble as other
- 11:46men, or are they plagued like other men.
- 11:48Therefore, pride serves as the necklace.
- 11:51Violence covers them like a garment.
- 11:54Their eyes bulge with abundance, and they have more than heart
- 11:58could wish. They scoff, speaking wickedly
- 12:01concerning oppression. They speak loftily.
- 12:04They're they set their mouth against the heavens, and their
- 12:07tongue walks throughout the earth.
- 12:09Therefore his people return here, and waters of a full cup
- 12:14are drained by them. And they say, how does God know?
- 12:18And is their knowledge in the Most High?
- 12:20Behold, these are the ungodly who are always at ease, and they
- 12:26increase in riches. I'm going to pause there for a
- 12:28moment because Asaph has come to the wrong conclusion, that the
- 12:33struggle is real does not apply to the wicked.
- 12:37He he only sees a limited perspective.
- 12:39It reminds me of social media, right?
- 12:41We only see the best of people's lives.
- 12:44But there's a story behind those pictures.
- 12:47I, I say that from personal experience.
- 12:49So, you know, I'm not, I'm not as active on social media as my
- 12:52wife is, But you know, we, we see, you know, all the family
- 12:56gathered for that picture, but they didn't get the argument
- 12:58right before I was joking about our time at Disney World.
- 13:02My kids fortunately were a little older than at the time we
- 13:04went to Disney World. But man, I can tell you all the
- 13:08times you see these kids, you know, crying on the side and you
- 13:12know, you know, parents, you know, pulling their kids off.
- 13:14And I just every time I would see a kid just having a meltdown
- 13:17and a breakdown, I'd look over at my oldest and I'd be like
- 13:20happiest place on earth. But I bet you those family
- 13:25pictures, hey, they were all smiling.
- 13:28It was all it was all good, right?
- 13:30But you know, for ASAP, he didn't see that for ASAP.
- 13:34He says, hey, these people are always at ease.
- 13:37Verse 12 and they increase in riches.
- 13:41Surely. Now here's this false
- 13:43conclusion, right? This is the lie.
- 13:46This is spiritual warfare, verse 13.
- 13:50This is when the enemy has gotten a foothold and let's not
- 13:54just put it on Asaph, but let's see this in our own life because
- 13:59he says, surely I have cleansed my heart in vain and washed my
- 14:03hands and innocence for all day long.
- 14:07I've been plagued and chastened every morning.
- 14:10So he looks at the those who are not following God looks like
- 14:15they have a life of ease. It's a carefree life.
- 14:19And he looks at himself, he looks at his life.
- 14:21And maybe it's a dramatic statement, but hey, when you're
- 14:24living through something, right? It's like how trauma is defined.
- 14:27Trauma is what you perceive to be traumatic.
- 14:30You look at verse 14, he says. But all day long, I've been
- 14:34plagued and chastened every morning.
- 14:37And I just wonder even today, like how many of us have been in
- 14:41that long vicious cycle or season of discouragement where
- 14:47it just feels like it is unrelenting and unending.
- 14:51And that's kind of where Asaf is at.
- 14:53That's why he says back in verse 2, This is why his foot had
- 14:56almost slipped. He's just like, I know God is
- 14:59good, but why is my life not that?
- 15:03It just feels like everything's against me and all these things
- 15:06are happening. And then I look at people who
- 15:09don't even care about God and they just have this carefree
- 15:13life. But again, verse 13 is the is
- 15:17the danger, right? Because he says, surely I have
- 15:19cleansed my heart in vain. And obviously that is not true.
- 15:24And of course we're going to see him come out of that mindset.
- 15:27But I appreciate that transparency.
- 15:30And I think sometimes even for us in the church, for us as
- 15:34followers of God, that we wouldn't just sugarcoat our walk
- 15:39because of course, coming to Jesus is the best decision we
- 15:42can ever make, trusting that Jesus Christ is the Son of God,
- 15:45that Jesus Christ died for my sin on the cross, that I am
- 15:50covered with his righteousness. And yes, if anyone be in Christ,
- 15:53he is a new creation. Old things have passed away.
- 15:56All things have become new. And that is the truth, right?
- 15:59But then sometimes because of that life of the new creation,
- 16:03you know, we kind of try to mask and hide the reality of our pain
- 16:08and we maybe aren't as transparent as we could be.
- 16:12And I appreciate, I think that we can even take that as a side
- 16:15note with Asaf. So he kept it real.
- 16:17And that's what Psalms is, right?
- 16:19It's this the the songs and prayers being lifted up and I
- 16:23appreciate it. Pastor Bob Klaykamp was sharing
- 16:25with our staff today that there's times in meetings where
- 16:29he'll encourage people, write out your own Psalm.
- 16:32And I like, I think he said it not in like a heretical way, but
- 16:36write out your own song or prayer to God.
- 16:39Be real with God and be real. Like even to have that moment to
- 16:43just say to be transparent, like, Hey, I was, you know, any
- 16:46time I go down, you know, towards Highlands rants and you
- 16:49know, Cherry Creek and you see all these beautiful homes.
- 16:52I mean, I had a whole season where my my shopping route was
- 16:55like that. And you just look at these
- 16:56houses like, man, what do they do to live there?
- 17:02And I'll never be there. And you get mad about your
- 17:06situation or mad for me. I get mad about some of my past
- 17:09decisions. You know, it's easy to look back
- 17:11and say, well, I wasted some of my good years not paying enough
- 17:15attention in school or doing that, you know, and all of these
- 17:17things that can just flood your mind.
- 17:19Surely I've cleansed my heart. Verse 13 in vain.
- 17:22Not true. Come back into the text here in
- 17:27verse 15, he said, if I had said I will speak thus, behold, I
- 17:32would have been untrue to the generation of your children.
- 17:35When I thought how to understand this, it was too painful for me.
- 17:39And here's what we see. We see him going from that
- 17:41discouraged mindset to now the mindset of a sound mind of a
- 17:46sound mind. And verse 17 is a key in
- 17:50transitioning. Remember, I've titled today's
- 17:53message defeating discouragement, and there's a
- 17:56thought I I didn't share. But the thought is this, that if
- 17:59we don't learn how to defeat discouragement, it will very
- 18:04likely defeat you. If we don't learn how to defeat
- 18:08discouragement, it will very likely defeat you.
- 18:12And when I look at verse 17, here's where the everything
- 18:17changes to where he goes from. I had almost slipped.
- 18:22I'd cleanse my heart in vain till until verse 17 I went into
- 18:27the sanctuary of God and then I understood their end.
- 18:35One of the take, a take away that I would have for us is this
- 18:39is to do the next right thing and the right emotions will soon
- 18:44follow because the idea of discouragement, the idea of
- 18:49discouragement is a mindset that will hold us back from doing the
- 18:55right thing. When you're discouraged, often
- 18:58times it will lead you to inactivity.
- 19:01It will lead you to being unproductive.
- 19:05And so, you know, to just know that when we're in the place of
- 19:09discouragement to do the next right thing and trust that the
- 19:14right emotions will follow and we think about, you know, for
- 19:18him to go to the sanctuary of God.
- 19:22Well, he was a worship leader, right?
- 19:24And this is probably going from the mundane.
- 19:27And maybe, you know, that was just every day.
- 19:29He's just leading in the goodness of God.
- 19:32That's where he starts off, right?
- 19:34Surely God is good to Israel to where it just went from the
- 19:39mundane formal leading. God is good to really like you.
- 19:45But you know what, God is indeed good.
- 19:49It was until I went into the sanctuary of the Lord.
- 19:54And and I would ask a question for us here today is where is
- 19:58your sanctuary? And of course, what a blessed
- 20:01place we're here. That's you know the name of this
- 20:03room. That's what we've named this
- 20:04room, the sanctuary, right? Where God's people meet or we
- 20:08come to gather, to worship, to fellowship, to break bread and
- 20:13communion. Of course, to be encouraged and
- 20:16strengthened and for sometimes rebuked through the word of God.
- 20:21But you know, we come to this sanctuary.
- 20:23But I would remind us that the sanctuary in the new covenant is
- 20:28anywhere a follower of God is. You and I are the temple of the
- 20:33Holy Spirit that I can meet God in anybody.
- 20:37I can meet him in in my bedroom. I can meet God in my drives.
- 20:41I can meet God, you know, at the gym.
- 20:44I can meet God in all these places of my life and just say,
- 20:48hey, when I'm in a discourage mindset, it's time to go to the
- 20:51sanctuary. Time to go back to prayer, to
- 20:55being in my word, to reaching out to a brother or sister in
- 20:59the Lord, to being in fellowship.
- 21:02And I want to remember to we, we looked at the tactics of the
- 21:05enemy earlier, remember doubt and we, and we've talked about
- 21:08distraction. We talked about disobedience.
- 21:11We talked about discontentment and we talked about depression.
- 21:15But here's what happens when we go to the sanctuary of the Lord,
- 21:17as we see the victory of the Lord and, and let's, let's cross
- 21:22all those things out. And in place of doubt comes
- 21:26faith and restored faith. And in place of being
- 21:30distracted, I become alert and focused and attentive.
- 21:35In place of course, of disobedience, I have that heart
- 21:40towards obedience. And in the place of being
- 21:44discontent, I become satisfied. Or you can use the word grateful
- 21:49because a lot of times discontentment is met with the
- 21:52lack of gratitude. But now I'm in this place, in
- 21:55the sanctuary where I look at what I do have, not what I don't
- 22:00say. God, you are indeed good.
- 22:03And thank you for those things. You know, we go from a place of
- 22:06depression to a place of hope. And these are the victories that
- 22:11we have in the sanctuary of the Lord.
- 22:13Because where the Lord dwells, there is victory.
- 22:16And I'm, I'm sure you've heard it before and I say it, I know
- 22:20I've said it before, maybe not to this audience, it's been a
- 22:22while, but you know that we don't fight for victory, but we
- 22:27fright from a place of victory, right?
- 22:29That that's the whole heart of being in Christ is that we're
- 22:33already in a place of conquering.
- 22:35We're already in a place of victory.
- 22:37And when I'm getting in this discouraged mindset, I'm kind of
- 22:40throwing a pity party. I forgot who I am and the Lord.
- 22:44I forgot the authority God has given me.
- 22:46I forgot the power God has impressed upon me.
- 22:50Because as a follower of God, we know in His sanctuary we have
- 22:55all of these victories picking back up in verse 18 of Psalm 73.
- 23:01And remember the big struggle that ASAP was having was the
- 23:04wicked and the prosperity of the wicked.
- 23:07In verse 18 he says surely you have set them in slippery places
- 23:12and you have cast them down to destruction and whole.
- 23:15Oh how they brought to desolation as in a moment they
- 23:19were utterly consumed with terrors as a dream when one
- 23:23awakes. So Lord, when you awake you
- 23:25shall despise their image. I do want to pause on verse 20,
- 23:29right, because I want us to be careful to develop a doctrinal
- 23:33stance as if God were sleeping. But I think I believe for ASAP,
- 23:37it was in that intensity of the season, intensity of what he was
- 23:42dealing with. He felt as if it was like God
- 23:45was sleep. But we know God neither sleeps
- 23:48nor slumbers, right? We know that even when I don't
- 23:51see it, God is working. And even when we don't feel it,
- 23:54God is on the move, right? And so it's not like we look at
- 23:57verse 20 and I just wanted to pause with that because again,
- 24:01we can't look at that and say, I believe for Asaph, he was like,
- 24:04as if, you know, it's like when the time comes, because it's
- 24:07it's when we look at that we see God.
- 24:09When is the justice going to happen?
- 24:12When is all these things going to come to pass?
- 24:15But I can tell you this, I'm glad God waited for me.
- 24:19I'm glad God waited for many in this room to come to right
- 24:22standing. And that's exactly what second
- 24:24Peter chapter 3 says that God is not slack in his promise, but he
- 24:29is delaying the judgement until many and his heart that all
- 24:33would come to repentance, right. And so again back in verse 20 as
- 24:37a dream when one awakes, O Lord, or when you awake, you'll
- 24:40despise their image. And thus my heart was grieved
- 24:45and my and I was vexed in my mind.
- 24:48And the new living translation verse 21 is translated as a
- 24:51bitter heart and kind of like a confused mind.
- 24:55And isn't that what discouragement does?
- 24:57Discouragement can do will just confuse us.
- 25:00The discouragement will cloud us.
- 25:02And he says my heart was vexed my or my heart was grieved or
- 25:06bitter. I was vexed in my mind, and I
- 25:09was so foolish and ignorant. I was like a beast before you.
- 25:13Nevertheless, I am continually with you, and you hold me by my
- 25:18right hand. You will guide me with your
- 25:20counsel and afterward receive me to your glory.
- 25:25I want us to to really, especially for those of us that
- 25:27are maybe in a season of discouragement or just naturally
- 25:31struggle with discouragement. One to remember.
- 25:33Yeah, it's a lot of manifestation, you could say, of
- 25:36spiritual warfare in your life. And what does that look like as
- 25:39opposed to just the spiritual term of warfare, right?
- 25:42Just know that's what discouragement is.
- 25:44It's it's a place to get us in a place in our mind that will stop
- 25:48us from a place of action, right.
- 25:51But as you think of that, well, God hasn't given us that
- 25:55discouraged mind. Think of all the times it was
- 25:58told to be strong and of good courage, because that's another
- 26:02way you could define discouragement, literally
- 26:04lacking courage, but to be strong and of good courage.
- 26:08And that is not from the Lord. And I'm just, you know, one of
- 26:11those key verses that maybe just in a discouraged mindset that
- 26:14you just put as a memory verse for our for our hearts.
- 26:18Again, I'm sure those who know me well, they're like, Hey, hope
- 26:21you're listening to the sermon, right?
- 26:23But to pray Second Timothy 17 for God has not given us a
- 26:29spirit of fear or timidity, but of love and of power and of a
- 26:34sound mind. And when we're when we have that
- 26:37discouragement, like I see back in verse 21 where it's this
- 26:40grieved heart and this problematic mind or this
- 26:44discouraged mind to get to this place, to remind myself that
- 26:49through Christ, he has given me a sound mind that I want to not
- 26:54have that discouraged mind, but to have this sound mind.
- 26:57And that's where you see like verse 24 and verse 23, that you
- 27:00could hold me continually in your right hand.
- 27:03You guide me with your counsel. And afterward you received me to
- 27:07glory. And you know, I had this take
- 27:09away that when we feel discouraged, if that's the time
- 27:13to pause and pray for perspective, when we feel
- 27:16discouraged, it's the time to pause and pray for perspective.
- 27:22Because that's what Psalm 73 is, right?
- 27:24You see how he goes from my feet had almost slipped until I went
- 27:29into the sanctuary of the Lord. Because what happened in the
- 27:31sanctuary of the Lord, Yeah, he received all the victory, but
- 27:35it's because his perspective came back to the to the right
- 27:38reality. He went from just looking at the
- 27:42things external to seeing things eternal.
- 27:46And that's really the perspective that we're needing.
- 27:49That's really the perspective we should have is the perspective
- 27:53of eternity. We got a little bit of time.
- 27:56I want you guys turn, if you would, in your Bibles to
- 27:58Colossians chapter 3. Go to Colossians chapter 3
- 28:04because this is an instruction right here in the Scripture,
- 28:07right? To have our mindset and even as
- 28:09you think of him declaring to be put in that place until I see
- 28:13you in glory in Colossians chapter 3, I direct you to verse
- 28:20one and two. And by the way, this promise and
- 28:23many of these promises I've been speaking about are for those who
- 28:27have bowed their knee and heart to Jesus Christ, that these are
- 28:31not promises I can declare if I'm not in right, standing with
- 28:35the Son of God, right? And so even for those that are
- 28:39listening today, you may stand on the other side of Psalm 73
- 28:43where you just feel like my life is all right.
- 28:47My yeah, the struggle is real, but my, but I don't need God.
- 28:51And what you'll see is a lot of those judgements, He said, hey,
- 28:55until I saw their end. Well, hey, those things are
- 28:59true, that God is a God of righteousness and justice.
- 29:02He's absolutely a God of love. And the greatest expression of
- 29:05love is Jesus spread out on that cross, the only sinless man to
- 29:09ever live, dying for us, but for the believer again.
- 29:14And so again, if you don't know Christ, let this just be what
- 29:18God brought you into this place for, that this would be the day
- 29:21you would bow your heart and bow your knee on this side of
- 29:24eternity. And for the follower of Christ,
- 29:27it says this in verse 3, chapter 3, verse 1 of Colossians.
- 29:30If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which
- 29:34are above where Christ is sit is where Christ is sitting at the
- 29:39right hand of God. And then verse 2, set your mind
- 29:42on things above, not on things of the earth.
- 29:46In a discouraged mind, we've probably lost sight of heaven.
- 29:51We're probably just too focused, as if the end is here, as if
- 29:54this is all there is. It's our bank account, it's our
- 29:57cars, it's our life, it's our marriage, it's our this, it's
- 30:00our that. And it's all the things
- 30:02all-encompassing that will frustrate us and discourage us.
- 30:07But we've taken our eyes. Even, you know, we're
- 30:09discouraged at God, that God, why haven't you done this for me
- 30:12or done that? But all the while God is
- 30:16reminding us get our sights back to him, back to heaven.
- 30:20And that's where if you go turn, turning, going back to Psalm 73,
- 30:26these next verses, we're going to see this heavenly
- 30:28perspective, this perspective of eyes upon the Lord.
- 30:34Verse 25 the psalmist declares this says whom have I in heaven
- 30:41but you and there is none on earth I desire beside you my
- 30:46flesh and my heart fell, but God is the strength of my heart and
- 30:51my portion forever. And so again he's putting his
- 30:55sights upon heaven on the reality and we even more so than
- 31:00Asaph. Do you know we have more
- 31:01information, more understanding than Asaph did as a worship
- 31:06leader. But a lot of times maybe I'm
- 31:08attributing too much of about Christian principles, but
- 31:11remember they're looking forward.
- 31:13Asaph was looking forward to the Messiah.
- 31:17He didn't understand the name Jesus.
- 31:19Like I understand the name Jesus, like you and I understand
- 31:23the name Jesus. We look back and say even more
- 31:26so he's looking forward and just you know, I know there's got to
- 31:29be more than this like Job. I know my Redeemer yet lives and
- 31:35I'll see him here on the earth and he says whom am I in heaven
- 31:38but you and there's none on earth I desire beside you.
- 31:42You know, I should call myself out a little bit in
- 31:44discouragement. But verse 26, you see, you know,
- 31:47my flesh and my heart fell. You know, maybe for ASAP he was
- 31:50struggling with physical ailment and I'm not sure if I'm the only
- 31:54one in the room, but that could probably be one of the areas if
- 31:57I get hurt or if I get sick, man, I just get out out of this
- 32:01world inconsolable and just discouraged, right?
- 32:06And you know, that's for him again, putting his sights back
- 32:09on heaven. He says, even though it's like,
- 32:10even though my flesh and my heart fail, God is my strength.
- 32:16He is the he is my, my port, my heart and my portion forever.
- 32:21So again, another good memory verse for those in the time of
- 32:25the struggle and maybe even in a physical health struggle.
- 32:29Remember that my heart and flesh, my flesh and my heart may
- 32:32fail, but God is the strength and my portion forever.
- 32:37In verse 27, it says, for indeed those who are far from you shall
- 32:42perish, and you have destroyed all those who desert you for
- 32:46harlotry. And pausing quick there, here's
- 32:48where another perspective comes. Even if the wicked are
- 32:54prospering, even if their bank accounts are more and even if
- 32:57they have more vacations and even if their life looks better
- 33:00on social media, and even if all of those things, it's the end of
- 33:05the wicked. Their wealth in is lost at death
- 33:11that you don't take anything with you.
- 33:13And that's this idea of verse 27.
- 33:15He's saying even if that's true, even if day-to-day I wake up and
- 33:19the struggle is real and every day I wake up like verse 14, I'm
- 33:23chastened every morning and I'm plagued every day and even
- 33:26though verse 26 my heart and flesh fell.
- 33:29It's like those who are far from you shall perish.
- 33:33And on the flip side of that, right, But for those who are
- 33:37righteous in Christ, death is a reward even in itself, that
- 33:42there's treasure. I'll take you one more.
- 33:45Maybe I'll take you a couple more places.
- 33:46But let me take you quickly to Matthew chapter 6.
- 33:49If you want to turn in your Bibles, you're welcome to do so.
- 33:52Matthew chapter 6. I want to plant in your minds
- 33:57the words of Jesus who tells us to store up for ourselves
- 34:01treasure in heaven. And Matthew chapter 6 verse 19
- 34:05through 21 as a reminder as we look back at verse 27 in the how
- 34:10the wealth of the wicked will perish with them, but the for
- 34:15the life of the righteous, we build treasure in heaven.
- 34:18And my perspective is heavenward.
- 34:20Jesus would say like this in Matthew chapter 6 verse 19.
- 34:24Do not lay up for yourself treasure on earth where moth and
- 34:27rust destroy where thieves break in the still, but lay up for
- 34:31yourself treasure in heaven, or neither moth nor rust destroy
- 34:35where thieves do not break in. And still for where your
- 34:38treasure is, there your heart will be also.
- 34:42Again, such an important reason. I want a heart and mind set upon
- 34:46eternal things, because those are the things that really
- 34:49matter. Those are the only things that
- 34:52are going to matter. I'm not going to take any of
- 34:54these, any of the things I've acquired on earth to heaven
- 34:59unless it was done and the name of the Lord unless it was done
- 35:03for the Lord, you know, build up our self treasure in heaven.
- 35:08Going back to Psalm 73, as we start to wind down here, we'll
- 35:14see this final verse, another verse of good perspective,
- 35:20another verse that's important for defeating discouragement.
- 35:25Another verse that is is a strength in the midst of this
- 35:30real battle and says, but it is good for me to draw near to God
- 35:35and I've put my trust in the Lord God that I may declare all
- 35:40your works. And you know, as I gave you all
- 35:44the contrast earlier to all those other D words, right, of
- 35:47doubt and of, you know, of distraction and disobedience and
- 35:53discontentment and depression. Let me give you this victory
- 35:57from discouragement, right? And that's what I see here in
- 36:00verse 28, that this victory instead of discouragement is one
- 36:04of strength, 1 of boldness and one of joy.
- 36:09And those are the this is the great exchange.
- 36:11And isn't that what Jesus does? Not just what he did for our
- 36:14eternal salvation and praise him for that.
- 36:16He took my sin and gave me his righteousness, but here He
- 36:21continually by grace through faith, does these amazing things
- 36:25that He exchanges all of these challenges in warfare and in
- 36:30place of discouragement. Here's what he wants to give us
- 36:33right strength and boldness and joy.
- 36:37As you just scan back to Psalm 73, let me as we consider that
- 36:41the battle is real, as we consider what it means to defeat
- 36:45discouragement, let me highlight again some key verses that maybe
- 36:50you just need to highlight these, write them down.
- 36:54Really rehearse them in your mind before the Lord.
- 36:57But verse one, here's our victory verses today.
- 36:59Verse one, truly God is good to Israel, to such who are pure in
- 37:05heart. And I look at verse 17, right
- 37:08where his whole shift in mindset changed until I went into the
- 37:12sanctuary of God in verse 24. And you can look back even in
- 37:17the verse 23. But verse 24 you will guide me
- 37:20with Your counsel and afterward receive me to glory in verse 26,
- 37:27that my heart and flesh fell, but God is my strength and my
- 37:31portion forever. And then of course, verse 28.
- 37:34But it is good for me to draw near to God that I have put my
- 37:38trust in the Lord God that I may declare His works.
- 37:43I'll have brother Henry come back up as we wind down.
- 37:45But last couple thoughts, right, Because there's a lot of
- 37:49takeaways as we think of discouragement.
- 37:52And of course, you know, there's more things I'm sure we can
- 37:55expand on. But if I were to, I want to give
- 37:58you a comprising of three things, three things of what
- 38:03does it look like to defeat discouragement?
- 38:06And I want to remind us and and through the word of God, right
- 38:09that we are told to stand still, Exodus 14, verse 13 and to stand
- 38:16strong as we see in Ephesians chapter 6, verse 12.
- 38:21I want to read Exodus 14 verse 13 quick to you, but it says
- 38:25this remembering the idea of standing still and standing
- 38:29strong. Exodus 14 verse 13, Moses said
- 38:32to the people, do not be afraid, stand still.
- 38:35See the salvation of the Lord which he will accomplish for you
- 38:38today. So as we think of our
- 38:41discouragement or think of your battle, your warfare, to
- 38:45remember to stand still and as we saw in Ephesians 612 earlier,
- 38:49to stand strong. I think of what Paul told
- 38:52Timothy in first Timothy chapter 6, verse 12, to stay in the
- 38:57fight because all the times that we feel like we want to give up,
- 39:02that's not the voice of your shepherd, that's the voice of
- 39:05the enemy. But to stay in the fight, to
- 39:08keep up the good fight of the faith.
- 39:11So stay in the fight and then to rest in and to rely on the Lord.
- 39:17And Exodus 14, verse 14, the Lord says, it says that the Lord
- 39:21will fight for you and you shall hold your peace.
- 39:26And just as we are saved by grace through faith and not of
- 39:30our self, that's how we that's our eternal salvation.
- 39:33And praise him again for that. But by grace through faith is
- 39:38how we continually see these victories in our life that we
- 39:42don't dismiss grace for the sake of just our eternal salvation.
- 39:46But I receive God's grace through faith through all these
- 39:49areas of my life. Church, I want us to do
- 39:53something as we close off, but I want to pray over us and over
- 39:57each one. And I'm sure you know, like all
- 39:59the hands that went up earlier for understanding the struggle
- 40:02is real and acknowledging. Of course, today the battle is
- 40:05real and praying for in the idea of spiritual armor in Ephesians
- 40:10chapter 6. It tells us to pray for one
- 40:13another. The way that we receive these
- 40:15pieces of armor and all the armor God has given us is
- 40:19through prayer. And if I could encourage you to
- 40:21lay a hand on someone nearby, because I'm sure to some
- 40:24capacity, all of us here in this room have a level of warfare.
- 40:29So if you're not near anyone or you see somebody that doesn't
- 40:34have a hand on them, I just encourage, lay a hand on
- 40:37someone's shoulder. I want to share this verse and
- 40:41then I'm going to pray. But I was reminded or I saw this
- 40:44in Second Chronicles 20, verse 17, and I'm going to read it
- 40:47from the new Living Translation. But it says as the Lord would
- 40:51speak to Jehoshaphat through a prayer to answer the prayer he
- 40:54said, but you will not even need to fight.
- 40:57Take your positions, then stand still and watch the Lord's
- 41:01victory. He is with you.
- 41:03O people of Judah and Jerusalem, do not be afraid or discouraged.
- 41:08Go out against them tomorrow, for the Lord is with you.
- 41:12We're going to pray, and I'm going to pray and lay hands even
- 41:14on my brother Henry up here. Let's pray together.
- 41:16God in heaven, we just humbly come before you.
- 41:19God, we recognize that it's not just the struggle is real.
- 41:22God, the battle is real and all the things that how spiritual
- 41:26warfare can just come to surface in our life.
- 41:29We ask for your victory today. God, We pray it by faith and
- 41:32receive it by faith. God.
- 41:34And so we think of all the pieces of the armor you've given
- 41:37us the belt of truth, God, we place it on to ground us back
- 41:41into a place of truth. We think of the breastplate of
- 41:44righteousness, this covering upon the emotion of our heart,
- 41:47but also God, this covering of you, Jesus, that picture of you
- 41:50who are our righteousness to lead us to that next right thing
- 41:55that we put on the foot gear that says it's the gospel of
- 41:58peace. And help us not to just take
- 42:00this truth for our self. But God give us that strength as
- 42:04we put on the foot gear to take that gospel truth to those
- 42:07around us. And God, we take up the shield
- 42:10of faith, which you say quenches the fiery darts of the wicked. 1
- 42:15And so we take up today by faith, by prayer, your shield to
- 42:20to quench those fiery darts. And we put on the helmet of
- 42:24salvation as it is this covering over our minds, as it is a
- 42:28reminder of our true identity. As we went back to the sanctuary
- 42:31of the Lord, we were minded, God, the joy of our salvation.
- 42:35And of course we take up the sword which is your spirit and
- 42:39is your word. And God we declare that as our
- 42:41offensive tool is that we walk not by might but by your spirit
- 42:46and heeding your word and all things.
- 42:48God bless these people and all that are hearing it even online
- 42:52or in some other Ave. God we ask all these things
- 42:55again by faith and we receive them by faith.
- 42:58In Jesus name we pray, Amen, Amen.
