- 0:46Speaker 3: are across country and around the world. You are listening
- 0:51Speaker 3: to Ghost Stories and the Unusual Paranormal Podcasts. I am,
- 0:57Speaker 3: indeed your host, Joe the Ghost Guy, and I like

- 1:09Speaker 3: hope everyone's liking them.
- 1:12Speaker 1: And we are.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Pretty well good on our new location. I've been hearing
- 1:24Speaker 3: a few ghost stories here and there about you know,
- 1:29Speaker 3: different towns I have on here and I'm looking forward
- 1:33Speaker 3: to explore a little bit more and see what happens.
- 1:42Speaker 3: But until then, you know, I did something back I
- 1:50Speaker 3: believe season one or maybe a season two, but I
- 1:55Speaker 3: think I brought I think I think about bringing it back.
- 1:58Speaker 3: And this episode today, I'm going to do some haunted
- 2:05Speaker 3: headlines UH newspapers that that were brought to my attention
- 2:14Speaker 3: that you know, there's news that's you know, it's uh,
- 2:23Speaker 3: you know back in the day where you know, things
- 2:28Speaker 3: happen and you know, people read the newspapers and there
- 2:33Speaker 3: are some that looked up that I believe that it's
- 2:41Speaker 3: I believe it's well good and you know from you know, Arizona,
- 2:49Speaker 3: you know, Colorado, even across the country, you get a
- 2:55Speaker 3: lot of you know, mining towns that you know, look
- 3:00Speaker 3: for gold, silver, copper, any mines in general that no
- 3:10Speaker 3: matter how hard you you know, try to get it
- 3:16Speaker 3: to be saved. There are accidents that happened. And today's
- 3:21Speaker 3: episode is gonna be hot headlines on some ghostly encounters
- 3:29Speaker 3: that people have received during uh mining, the mining the mines.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Would it be cold, gold, silver, et cetera. So here
- 3:47Speaker 3: some of the ghost headlines that's brought up you will
- 3:54Speaker 3: enjoy them. In the hills of Idaho Springs, Colorado, since
- 4:02Speaker 3: the Phoenix Gold Mine built during the Colorado Gold rush
- 4:07Speaker 3: from the eighteen seventies. This mine was once filled with
- 4:11Speaker 3: miners seeking fortune, but as they dug deeper, tragedy struck,
- 4:19Speaker 3: leaving the mind with a haunting legacy than doers to
- 4:24Speaker 3: this day. The Phoenix gold Mine was a prosperous site,
- 4:30Speaker 3: drying workers eager to find gold, but the mine was
- 4:35Speaker 3: also dangerous. Cavens, accidents, and rock falls were very common,
- 4:43Speaker 3: often claiming the lives of miners. Safety practices were minimal
- 4:50Speaker 3: back then, and some of these men were never recovered,
- 4:56Speaker 3: so their bodies and some of their spirits and main
- 5:01Speaker 3: trapped in the mindsteps. One spirit has seen most often
- 5:11Speaker 3: his name as Dutch Nellis, a formal minor, but the
- 5:17Speaker 3: tragic end stories say he was friendly but private. During
- 5:24Speaker 3: the deadly dispute, Nellus lost his life and said the
- 5:29Speaker 3: Phoenix mind. People now see his spirit wandering the tunnels
- 5:36Speaker 3: where he worked his last ship. Many visitors reported and
- 5:43Speaker 3: feeling intense eerie presents near these areas. Some even say
- 5:50Speaker 3: a shadowy figure or feel a nicy chill as of
- 5:56Speaker 3: Nellis's spirit guides guards the mine. The Phoenix gold Mine
- 6:05Speaker 3: was drawn paranormal investigators from all over and an investigation
- 6:12Speaker 3: the ghost hunters recording a voice saying can't thought no
- 6:21Speaker 3: one else was nearby. Others have reported flashlights flickering, our
- 6:27Speaker 3: cameras failing to work in certain areas. These haunted spots
- 6:34Speaker 3: were known for cold drafts in odd sounds. One guard
- 6:41Speaker 3: one guide heard a faint tapping of a pickaxe and
- 6:48Speaker 3: the tunnels. She thought a coworker was nearly nearby and
- 6:56Speaker 3: called out, but received only silence in return. Many guests
- 7:03Speaker 3: have also heard whispers, footsteps, tappening sounds as though they
- 7:09Speaker 3: go out, as if the ghosts were still working in
- 7:13Speaker 3: the mind. Today, the Phoenix gold Mine is open to
- 7:19Speaker 3: the public, tracting ghost hunters and curious visitors. Ghost guides
- 7:27Speaker 3: share stories of the minds on the past and Warren's
- 7:32Speaker 3: guests to respect the spirits. Every Halloween, thrill seekers come
- 7:39Speaker 3: hoping to catch a glimpse of Dutch nils or hear
- 7:44Speaker 3: when the ghostly sounds for themselves. Visitors say they feel
- 7:49Speaker 3: chills in certain areas and sometimes see flickering lights in
- 7:55Speaker 3: the distance if you are brave enough to enter. Don't
- 8:01Speaker 3: be surprised if you hear of a pickaxe. The spirits
- 8:08Speaker 3: of miners past and still be at work, a reminder
- 8:13Speaker 3: that some who went down never never made it out.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Here's one that it's called the the Yellow Sightings of
- 8:35Speaker 3: the Sound of the Yellow Jackets, Virginia City, Nevada, November sixteenth.
- 8:43Speaker 3: For some years past there have been observed by miners
- 8:48Speaker 3: working in the all upper levels the Yellow Jacket Mine,
- 8:53Speaker 3: Gold Hill, Nevada, various phenomena, apparently of the super natural character.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Recently of these unaccountable disturbances have been renewed in a
- 9:11Speaker 3: startling manner. A few miners like to own to have
- 9:16Speaker 3: been frightened by anything of a ghostly nature. The majority
- 9:23Speaker 3: prefer quietly leaving in mind to acknowledging themselves frightened by
- 9:31Speaker 3: unnatural sightings and sounds. For this reason, little is there
- 9:37Speaker 3: here to four been made public in regard to the
- 9:44Speaker 3: goings or doings the spoos and goblins, and the old
- 9:50Speaker 3: upper workings of the Jacket. Miners are credited for being
- 9:58Speaker 3: as thoroughly mhm situated with the superstitious nation and notions
- 10:08Speaker 3: and fears are also sailors talking and talking into consideration
- 10:15Speaker 3: the scenes of the labor and the two classes miners
- 10:19Speaker 3: have such greater reason for being overcome at times by
- 10:26Speaker 3: superst by superstitious fears, then have sailors, while at laborers
- 10:34Speaker 3: have The latter are at all times performed out under
- 10:40Speaker 3: the free vault of heaven and midsts of the open
- 10:45Speaker 3: waters of the board, of the board broad ocean, and
- 10:53Speaker 3: much of these of the times in the broad light
- 10:57Speaker 3: light of day. The business of the former carries him
- 11:02Speaker 3: into subterranean depths, where remains a political darkness surpassing, that is,
- 11:16Speaker 3: of the land beyond the ocean stream, where the but
- 11:24Speaker 3: our Climerites dwell. In the old world there was always
- 11:30Speaker 3: excited a belief of gnomes, gobblins, gulb cobalts, and other
- 11:41Speaker 3: supernatural beings, particular into minds, subteradical boogies, all of a
- 11:51Speaker 3: more or less unwholesome nature. In Germany, the whole worlds
- 12:01Speaker 3: were politically are politically and in embody embodied and dicious,
- 12:13Speaker 3: and in the adrifts of galleries of the old minds.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Ridiculous states that in Germany they do usually they usually
- 12:28Speaker 3: walk into little coats some two feet long. Mangnus asserts
- 12:38Speaker 3: that were no fewer than six kinds of subterranean goblins,
- 12:46Speaker 3: some bigger, some less, all which was seen in and
- 12:52Speaker 3: about minds monsters, says, some of these not courier noxious,
- 13:00Speaker 3: and so and again do no harm. Gorgeous Angelina speaks
- 13:11Speaker 3: up the most noble of these being scenes of the
- 13:18Speaker 3: very instant tribe of subterranean imps, as in Greek coboles,
- 13:28Speaker 3: as in the in the German Cobbold, and Acacola says
- 13:37Speaker 3: that both of the get Told and the Cobol are
- 13:43Speaker 3: clothed after a manner of material men, and all many
- 13:49Speaker 3: times and indicate their works. Although stories of these goblems,
- 13:55Speaker 3: the miners have been brought into stopped by miners from
- 14:03Speaker 3: freaking Berg, Altenburg, Classical and other mining related regions in
- 14:12Speaker 3: Germany with similar stories from the minds of Cornwall or
- 14:18Speaker 3: miners have never encountered in such spirits in the lower
- 14:23Speaker 3: levels here, nor seen any traces of their works. Of
- 14:28Speaker 3: your miners fear anything at all. It is the spirits
- 14:32Speaker 3: of the dead, the regular old passioned churchyards ghosts. But
- 14:39Speaker 3: even these little as there they're here to before been heard.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Occasionally a story has been started, and some strange sounds
- 14:52Speaker 3: have been heard, and some out to the mines, but
- 14:57Speaker 3: nothing more than they accounts of any sounds heard to
- 15:02Speaker 3: be obtained. Now, however, we have something definite in regard
- 15:10Speaker 3: to the strange sightings and sounds and the jacket. On
- 15:15Speaker 3: Thursday night, November tenth, W. P. Bennett, who was employed
- 15:25Speaker 3: at the mine, had an experience so startling that it
- 15:30Speaker 3: gave him such a fit of sickness from which he
- 15:35Speaker 3: could not fully recover at at this writing. Mister Bennett
- 15:42Speaker 3: is also known as many persons in San Francisco, as
- 15:47Speaker 3: well as his part of the Nevada and many of
- 15:51Speaker 3: the mountain towns of California. He was for a number
- 15:57Speaker 3: of years in the employee of welsh Argo and Company,
- 16:02Speaker 3: and in the old stage staging days and charger as
- 16:07Speaker 3: superintendent of all their horses and coaches and such of
- 16:13Speaker 3: the time traveling to and fro over the routes. He
- 16:21Speaker 3: is a very truthful man and a Pacific Coast pioneer,
- 16:27Speaker 3: and a man who throughout his life.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Has feared.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Quote no evil thing that is walked by night and
- 16:39Speaker 3: fog or fire by a lake or mooria, moorish fin, blueminger,
- 16:50Speaker 3: hag or stubborn unlaid ghosts that breaks his breaks his
- 16:57Speaker 3: magic chains at curfew time. I'm no goblin or or
- 17:03Speaker 3: Swart firing of the mine. Quote, he says that they never.
- 17:11Speaker 3: He says that never until last week did he or
- 17:16Speaker 3: hear anything they could not account for. He is now
- 17:22Speaker 3: employed in the Yellow Jacket Mine as power man powder man.
- 17:30Speaker 3: He was a powder man means he was a blaster.
- 17:34Speaker 3: He was in charge, and in this he was charged
- 17:40Speaker 3: and distributes to the miners the powder the empire in
- 17:45Speaker 3: the blasting which I just said, uh, he was been.
- 17:50Speaker 3: He had been working uh for for the mine over
- 17:56Speaker 3: four years. During this time he has frequently been in
- 18:02Speaker 3: and out alone and passed through all parts of that
- 18:07Speaker 3: without a thought of seeing or hearing anything of ghostly nature.
- 18:14Speaker 3: He knew a man leaving a mind an account of
- 18:18Speaker 3: things that had heard or see, but paid very little
- 18:25Speaker 3: attention to the mysterious talk about them each of the
- 18:30Speaker 3: occasionally heard among the miners. Further than saying that he
- 18:38Speaker 3: would very much like to see or hear something where
- 18:43Speaker 3: they they of them what they spoke of, and now
- 18:50Speaker 3: he wants no more of it. He says he has
- 18:54Speaker 3: got his dose and never get over it until his
- 18:59Speaker 3: life life has ended. Last Thursday night, he spoke to
- 19:05Speaker 3: Pete Lagnan, the fore man, the most shovels he had
- 19:11Speaker 3: been up to on the thousandth level and said he
- 19:17Speaker 3: could go up and get them. He told him to
- 19:22Speaker 3: do so. He went up to the old deserted level
- 19:26Speaker 3: and countered and ascended to the first floor above the
- 19:32Speaker 3: track floor. He went out and across the floor into
- 19:35Speaker 3: the station and talked, I had taken up to to
- 19:40Speaker 3: across the floor to the two He went up. He
- 19:45Speaker 3: took up two shovels, returned them to descend to the
- 19:50Speaker 3: track floor. He was carrying the at lantern, and when
- 19:56Speaker 3: he had got into the ladder that led to the
- 20:01Speaker 3: track floor, and it was moving, and was moving down
- 20:07Speaker 3: with his lantern below the hole in the floor, but
- 20:11Speaker 3: his head lantern his head still threw it. He was
- 20:18Speaker 3: startled that hearing the pound of heavy footsteps come and
- 20:26Speaker 3: trumpling over the planks directly towards him. He began to
- 20:35Speaker 3: descend the ladder as rapidly and as possible, and whatever
- 20:40Speaker 3: he did, he heard the steps immediately over his head
- 20:44Speaker 3: at the hole, and he said he had just left.
- 20:49Speaker 3: He pushed, pushed on down the ladder in a short
- 20:52Speaker 3: distance until he reached the orseship and lead leads down
- 20:59Speaker 3: from the floor through which the footsteps were hot, were herd.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Hearing there.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Alting at the shoot, he looked up and saw nothing.
- 21:18Speaker 3: He knew that no man were working on that level.
- 21:22Speaker 3: But he came into came into his head that Pete
- 21:26Speaker 3: Langdon might possibly have followed him up at that part
- 21:32Speaker 3: of the mind, so he threw out and struck him.
- 21:38Speaker 3: That struck him that Pete could not have come up
- 21:42Speaker 3: through that without a light and could not be tampering
- 21:49Speaker 3: about the dark. Although feeling very shaky and uncertain, mister
- 21:54Speaker 3: Bennett understood that or oh, mister Bennett must purge to
- 22:01Speaker 3: call out, who's there anybody up there? Instantly he heard
- 22:10Speaker 3: again above the floor, but about forty feet back from
- 22:16Speaker 3: the hole through which he had just been descended a
- 22:21Speaker 3: heavy trumpet as the two men coming towards him in
- 22:28Speaker 3: the ladder way. As he stood on the ladder, he
- 22:33Speaker 3: held the lantern with his left hand, and under the
- 22:38Speaker 3: same arm the two shovels tightly pressed against his side. Suddenly,
- 22:45Speaker 3: from behind, the shovels were violently thrust forward and sent
- 22:52Speaker 3: flying in a distance of two sets of timber about
- 22:59Speaker 3: twelve feet, when they certainly struck against the wall and
- 23:04Speaker 3: went down the ladderway landing to a point a distant
- 23:09Speaker 3: nearly thirty feet from where they started. Up to this time,
- 23:16Speaker 3: said mister Bennett, I was not very badly frightened when
- 23:22Speaker 3: I felt the thrust from the behind and saw the
- 23:27Speaker 3: shovels flying ahead of me. I felt though my whole
- 23:31Speaker 3: system chilling, sickening, shot or for a moment I was
- 23:37Speaker 3: almost paralyzed of Then fear came with the worst and
- 23:44Speaker 3: crumping on the floor above. Still continuing, I descended the
- 23:49Speaker 3: ladder as swiftly as possible. When I reached the floor below,
- 23:56Speaker 3: in my excitement, I took a wrong turn, got off
- 24:00Speaker 3: into the strange drift. Did not recover my air until
- 24:06Speaker 3: I came until I came to where it was cave
- 24:11Speaker 3: down as if a large power of dirt. I dreaded
- 24:17Speaker 3: going back under the ladder, away from the floors above,
- 24:22Speaker 3: but managed to creep around behind the ladder and then
- 24:28Speaker 3: came to the drift I should have taken at first.
- 24:34Speaker 3: There laid my two shovels, but for a time I
- 24:39Speaker 3: was afraid to touch them, not knowing what might happen
- 24:44Speaker 3: at the moment of my laying my hands upon him. However,
- 24:51Speaker 3: I plucked up the courage to lay hold of the tools,
- 24:56Speaker 3: and soon got down to the eleventh just level, nothing
- 25:02Speaker 3: occurring to alarm me. When I got down among the men,
- 25:07Speaker 3: I asked for Pete Langdon, and he told me that
- 25:11Speaker 3: he had been up on the surface during my trip
- 25:16Speaker 3: to the thousandth level. I was so sick that I
- 25:21Speaker 3: was obligated to quit work. The men all saw that
- 25:26Speaker 3: something had happened to me want to know whether I
- 25:30Speaker 3: had been seen or heard anything. I gave them no
- 25:39Speaker 3: answer further than I could say that I had been
- 25:45Speaker 3: overtaken by a sudden fit of illness. They were not satisfied,
- 25:54Speaker 3: and that evening, at supper time, I told them what
- 25:58Speaker 3: I had occurred on the thousandth level. Then I learned
- 26:05Speaker 3: from I learned from them A strange things have happened
- 26:10Speaker 3: to others, and the old upper levels appears that the
- 26:15Speaker 3: nine hundredth level is that which the supernatural men of
- 26:21Speaker 3: the stations were the most frequent occurrences. It's said that
- 26:26Speaker 3: the three men have been killed on that level, that
- 26:31Speaker 3: one of the men was buried under a big, big
- 26:35Speaker 3: caven and his body has never been been recovered. At
- 26:42Speaker 3: the time of the Great Fire and the jacket which
- 26:45Speaker 3: broke out on the morning of April seventh, eighteen sixty nine.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Forty five men lost their lives, the bodies of three
- 26:57Speaker 3: of the bodies of the three these were never recovered,
- 27:02Speaker 3: and has always been a thought that they were walled
- 27:08Speaker 3: in within the bulkheads were built in the confined the
- 27:14Speaker 3: fire to containments, as afterwards, when the fire had extinguished itself,
- 27:23Speaker 3: some bits of bone were found in that section. Quite
- 27:28Speaker 3: a number of men have left the mind at different
- 27:32Speaker 3: times a count of strange happenings on the nineteen hundredth level.
- 27:38Speaker 3: The fact that these men given upsturdy work at four
- 27:43Speaker 3: dollars a day shows that they were pretty thoroughly frightened.
- 27:48Speaker 3: At the times of the men have been startled by
- 27:52Speaker 3: cries and shrieks, as someone of being pressed to death
- 27:58Speaker 3: under timbers, but most of them have been alarmed by
- 28:04Speaker 3: footsteps above the ground above them. Such were heard by
- 28:09Speaker 3: mister Bennett. The men who heard these sounds were not
- 28:14Speaker 3: always alone. Men working and cross cuts would hear footsteps
- 28:21Speaker 3: out of the main draft as someone on patrol marching
- 28:26Speaker 3: up and down along them footboards. At first, under the
- 28:31Speaker 3: impression that it was the foreman fermenting the drip of
- 28:40Speaker 3: the men went out to investigate. We can never see
- 28:44Speaker 3: anyone sound of the footsteps seizing when they said they
- 28:50Speaker 3: came into the drift through it and been distantly heard.
- 28:56Speaker 3: The moment before, when the return of the men there
- 29:00Speaker 3: were the sound footsteps trumping and grinding along the sandy
- 29:09Speaker 3: footboards of the track floor would again be heard, or
- 29:15Speaker 3: perhaps the groanings of the priest would begin. The disturbances
- 29:21Speaker 3: on the thousandth level have been much less frequent above
- 29:26Speaker 3: the nine hundredth and the levels above that, but without
- 29:31Speaker 3: The month ago, a minor named Bruce, who was the
- 29:36Speaker 3: work at the work on the thousandth level, suddenly threw
- 29:45Speaker 3: up his job, being passed over reason. He sat at first,
- 29:52Speaker 3: he said he was ill. He finally told a friend
- 29:55Speaker 3: that he been been a thing, which he took it
- 30:00Speaker 3: would be a warning to him to leave the mind,
- 30:06Speaker 3: but not say what he had seen. Was said that
- 30:09Speaker 3: the meant his death if he remained in the mind.
- 30:14Speaker 3: If you're being lapped at, preventced many of the fallen,
- 30:19Speaker 3: many of the men telling and cause of their fright.
- 30:24Speaker 3: About two years ago, a miner who was at work
- 30:28Speaker 3: on the two hundredth level her footsteps in the main draft,
- 30:33Speaker 3: and told the men who was at work with them
- 30:37Speaker 3: in the face of the crosscut, they could look out
- 30:40Speaker 3: and see who was there taking a caution. Oh no,
- 30:48Speaker 3: I'm sorry, taking a candle. He went out by a
- 30:52Speaker 3: few moments came rushing back with his hair on end
- 30:58Speaker 3: and trembling with every joy. He said that within got
- 31:03Speaker 3: out into the main draft, two shoes, with no person
- 31:07Speaker 3: in him came trumpling along before him in a foot walk.
- 31:14Speaker 3: He was so balied frightened that he would not stir
- 31:18Speaker 3: an inch from his partner during the remainder of his shift.
- 31:25Speaker 3: And when they you know, when it ended, he left
- 31:29Speaker 3: the mind, never to enter again. Mister Bennett says, although
- 31:35Speaker 3: the formality went by himself through all parts of the mind,
- 31:42Speaker 3: without a thought of fear, No money would now hire nobody,
- 31:48Speaker 3: No money would now we hire him again to go
- 31:53Speaker 3: alone into the old drafts and the chambers with the
- 31:58Speaker 3: thousand levels. He says. He was all. He says, as
- 32:05Speaker 3: all his life laughed at the stories he told of
- 32:09Speaker 3: the prank, spooks and tricks of the spiritualities. But he
- 32:16Speaker 3: was pushed that when his shovels were set flying as
- 32:22Speaker 3: a thing to be can get over. As mister Bennett
- 32:28Speaker 3: has always seen, known as one ugly, fearless and regards
- 32:34Speaker 3: supernatural things. His experience have been a great impact upon
- 32:39Speaker 3: the men working in the mind. There were at present
- 32:45Speaker 3: a bunch about twenty men at work on the one
- 32:51Speaker 3: thy two hundred level, formerly at charge of a change
- 32:58Speaker 3: of ship. When these men reached the eleventh hundredth level,
- 33:04Speaker 3: they would take and they would pass opening leaning up
- 33:07Speaker 3: to the thousandth level, Many a sidelong glances were cast
- 33:15Speaker 3: towards where it was some quick stepping along the men
- 33:20Speaker 3: who would bring up the rear. In writing an account
- 33:25Speaker 3: of these old haunting levels would not have been difficult
- 33:32Speaker 3: to have invented some of the startling things that I
- 33:37Speaker 3: have preferred relating, just that it was reported by mister
- 33:42Speaker 3: Bennett and the other miners themselves, without complete any attempt
