Transcript
- 0:09Hello, welcome back to another episode of Banter Laurencia.
- 0:12How are you all doing? I hope you're doing great.
- 0:14For today's episode we're going to be talking about Nollywood
- 0:18legendary actor Amichi Monaco. Monaco is currently sick.
- 0:24He has stroke. He is currently paralysed and
- 0:28seeking for financial help to help pay for his medical bills.
- 0:34Now if everybody if you've been watching Hollywood movie, you
- 0:38know Amish Monaco. He is one of The Pioneers of
- 0:41Nollywood movie. He is what he acted with Acampo.
- 0:45He was the father of Aki and Popo and that was I think the
- 0:49movie that actually made Nollywood or made our childhood,
- 0:54if you know I may say that. So I'm actually sick for a very
- 0:59long time he dropped out of circulation.
- 1:02People have been wondering where's the mention Monaco?
- 1:05Why has he not been in circulation in Hollywood movies
- 1:09at events and everything. So one of our social media
- 1:12commentator or a content creator actually went to visit him where
- 1:19he conducted an interview with Michael Monaco and Amici talked
- 1:23about his current health challenges that he's paralysed
- 1:27and let me just play that video for you to see what he has to
- 1:30see and watch this. I'll make you wanna let you.
- 1:38And when you look at the moment here of Nigeria.
- 1:44By the grace of God and others. Documents.
- 1:55Sheets. This seemed like these
- 1:59coordinates. Strong.
- 2:06Photo. I was looking.
- 2:10I wasn't driving. From you.
- 2:16There are also. Officials which was in the.
- 2:24There's some some tunes. Hello.
- 2:30We had nearly. I mean, I am.
- 2:36And that's it. I'm waiting for my call me.
- 2:43This is also. We did that, she thought, in
- 2:52good shape. Umm, I've been on camera.
- 2:59Netflix. Would be good for.
- 3:08Someone. The end of that moment?
- 3:16Was the entire worked out when I was struggling with this.
- 3:21Problem. And since then.
- 3:26Set a mouse. Right now I cannot.
- 3:36How long from my room? Ohh my.
- 3:43How far left? List.
- 3:50So this is a problem for me. I'm so sorry I didn't make it
- 3:56known to the public early. And you know it will last this
- 4:01long. What does it smell?
- 4:08I'm calling from where else? Pretending because.
- 4:14The problem was assistance. To see how they can help me.
- 4:22Provinces. This lever is on his arm
- 4:29forever. And the legs?
- 4:37Like something is really wrong. The profoundly difficult to
- 4:42learn it. Beach.
- 4:48So what is the problem I'm having?
- 4:52And these assistance. Doesn't mean spending money.
- 4:59The name for hospitals Bed. Blue for drugs?
- 5:06Because the government improves here.
- 5:11So unfortunate. So.
- 5:17I need a help. Anybody that is touched?
- 5:24This really were fun. This is the final thought it is.
- 5:31Then confirm certain things comma open it to.
- 5:38Through roles with this particular system.
- 5:42And I've been to all the hospitals.
- 5:46So. Was like I said before.
- 5:54I was thinking is a week something or few days something?
- 6:01Come back? So very prolonged, so I didn't.
- 6:09The people will be looking older people.
- 6:13So This is why I am calling. Hello hello my friends.
- 6:22What's in inside? Very good on the outside.
- 6:26And this is the time to help me. I'm dying of love.
- 6:34Please Now this video is at the back of John Okafor, another
- 6:41legendary actor who is also sick.
- 6:44He has undergone several surgeries and he's currently
- 6:49waiting to get better so that he can be flown to abroad India,
- 6:53wherever they want to fly him to, to help with his case.
- 6:57Now John Okafor has diabetes, his legs, he's about to be cut
- 7:01off both legs. And one of the conversation that
- 7:06comes out of this whole thing is what is the structure in
- 7:10Nollywood? Why are people our legendary
- 7:14actors? What is happening?
- 7:16Then we saw the movies that they've produced or acted in.
- 7:19Why is it that they don't have anything at, you know, their
- 7:25retirement age? They are not feeling OK like a
- 7:28lot of conversation have come out of this whole thing.
- 7:31And some people blame Nollywood structure, just like the way
- 7:34they blamed in the case of John Okafor.
- 7:36Some people said, oh, it is actors who spend lavishly when
- 7:41they were young and now they don't have money to take care of
- 7:45themselves. Some people blame it on Nigerian
- 7:47government, like people just have different opinions about
- 7:51this whole thing. First of all, I want to say that
- 7:55I wish I made someone that go very quick recovery.
- 7:59I wish him to like people should donate, help him out for him to
- 8:05get back to his feet. But I think the bone of
- 8:08contention here is that the previous generation or our
- 8:12fathers who our parents who are currently retiring, they did not
- 8:17plan for retirement. Like I'm going to be banging on
- 8:20this retirement because before you blink you get your
- 8:24retirement age. What are you doing now?
- 8:26We see Nollywood actresses or Nollywood actors who are making
- 8:32money right now and they're buying houses, buying cars,
- 8:35spending money, travelling abroad, doing a whole lot of
- 8:39things, living large, which was what the older generation did.
- 8:43They made money. They you can't tell me they did
- 8:46not make money because they make money.
- 8:48They there was like a week you see in one person in 5-6 movies
- 8:54even if they were paid 10,000, let's just say they made money
- 8:57out of it. But because they are in the
- 9:00limelight, they have to spend to, they have to look the part.
- 9:03You know, these are our stars, these are our legends.
- 9:06So you would not expect to see them in certain places.
- 9:11So they not just have to play that role, they have to embody
- 9:15that role which comes with its own expenses.
- 9:18And I understand that yes, they spent all this money and even if
- 9:22you bought houses just like the new generation are doing right
- 9:25now, nobody talks about inflation, let's say if you have
- 9:3030 million in 22,000 and two when they were hot or 1990
- 9:40something when they were hot. Because I think Aki and Popo
- 9:43where he actually his breakout role, he was about in the early
- 9:492000s. So let's say at that point they
- 9:53had 30 million and you're thinking, OK, I've planned for
- 9:56retirement, I have money, I can do whatever I like.
- 9:59You're just one sickness away from wiping out that money.
- 10:04You how you say you have houses, you're just one sickness away
- 10:07from that house to for you to sell that house and pay for
- 10:13medical and even go online, just like the way they are doing now
- 10:16to seek for financial help. I understand that people don't
- 10:21take health like you're enjoying your life.
- 10:25You're eating whatever you want to eat.
- 10:28You do whatever you want to do. You're smoking, drinking because
- 10:31most of them, you see that they have kidney problems.
- 10:33A lot of them have died of kidney failure, keep different
- 10:37kidney problems. I am not saying that, you know,
- 10:40I normally healthy person cannot have kidney problems, but
- 10:45sometimes this is as a result of lifestyle.
- 10:49Most of them don't take care of their lives, their their
- 10:52lifestyle. They just leave, you know, the
- 10:54money is coming in, they are spending their money and they
- 10:57are living the way they want to live.
- 10:58You're not understanding. That's OK you're 30 today, in
- 11:02the next 30 years, you're 60 years old.
- 11:06The things you're currently doing today, you will not be
- 11:08able to do it when you're 60. So what is that plan now?
- 11:12Most of them, when they are acting, all these movies, we
- 11:15don't have any transition plan. If you look at Kenneth Okonkwo,
- 11:18Kenneth Okonkwo went back to school, he gained a law degree.
- 11:22Now he's in a Labour Party, he's a spokesperson for Labour Party,
- 11:27he's in politics. He's like his transition from
- 11:31Nollywood to politics. Now, I am not saying that
- 11:36everybody must do that, but there has to be something that
- 11:39you can do because if you cannot transition from one role to the
- 11:43other or from 1 profession to the other, you are planning for
- 11:48retirement because let's say you are a bricklayer.
- 11:51OK, you're a bricklayer. When you're young, you have the
- 11:54strength to do all those things, to carry block, to do mixed
- 11:57cement and everything, even if you're using machines to do
- 12:00those things. But can you do that in your 60s?
- 12:04Can you do that after retirement?
- 12:06You know, people think, OK, once I retire, I will just sit down.
- 12:10I am not going to do anything again.
- 12:12That is when all these little little sickness is coming
- 12:15because you've been active all your life, all your adult life,
- 12:19and you're thinking, OK, I am retiring now because I've gotten
- 12:22to this retirement age. Let me just sit down and do
- 12:25nothing. This is where diabetes will come
- 12:28high, blood pressure will come, stroke will come.
- 12:31Because even when you were younger you were not taking care
- 12:33of yourself, but because you were active those things were
- 12:36not. Your immune system was still OK,
- 12:39but now because you're just sitting down.
- 12:41Like we need to take retirement seriously.
- 12:45Not just in the financial sense of.
- 12:46Because if you're planning for financials and you're saving all
- 12:51your money, you're investing money.
- 12:53You are one sickness away to clear that money.
- 12:56You are one stroke away to wipe off everything you have.
- 12:59You are. You are one kidney failure away
- 13:02for you to go online and start begging for money.
- 13:06So as you're planning for retirement, plan for good
- 13:09health, nobody knows what is going to happen.
- 13:13You can plan and God's plan everything and then you come out
- 13:17and you you you're still sick. But that does not give you an
- 13:21excuse not to even take care of yourself, our parents or the
- 13:25previous generation, because amateur monago, he could easily
- 13:29be my dad. So that's what I'm saying, our
- 13:31parents. So that generation I understand
- 13:35they made money or they did not look into their health enjoyment
- 13:40for them is popping all these things.
- 13:42And this is what this, this margin generation is currently
- 13:46doing who are going to retire in the next 30-40 years and they're
- 13:50still going to face the same challenges.
- 13:52You know you cannot say ohh I'd make you wanna go John Okafor
- 13:56did not save money or they did not invest money.
- 13:59But inflation is real. Inflation is real.
- 14:04You have 30 million today. Even if that 30 million is going
- 14:08to be 100 million in the next 30-40 years, the reality is what
- 14:16that money, the purchasing power for that money will be limited.
- 14:20So if people should plan that even in retirement you were
- 14:24making money even in retirement you're doing one or two things.
- 14:27I see a lot of people, especially civil servants who
- 14:31retire and because they don't know what to do with that money,
- 14:34especially when they pay them gratuity or I don't know what
- 14:38they call it or retirement package, they because they've
- 14:41not thought about what they were going to even do after
- 14:44retirement. They easily give fraudsters that
- 14:48money because somebody will come and tell you, OK, let me invest
- 14:50this money. We're going to get this amount
- 14:52of money or that amount of money.
- 14:54They will take that money and give a Foster and then they are
- 14:57suffering. A lot of people are suffering in
- 15:00their people. Some people are not even up to
- 15:02retirement age and they are suffering because of inflation,
- 15:07cost of living crisis, a whole lot of thing is going on.
- 15:10So we now coming up, we should be able to think ahead, think
- 15:15far ahead. If by chance you can get a dual
- 15:19citizenship in a country where there are medical facility where
- 15:23you can easily access their medical facilities, do it
- 15:27because a lot of people will buy spend over $100,000 buying a car
- 15:33that can easily get your citizenship somewhere you know
- 15:37that you can easily access their medical facilities.
- 15:40Do that for your golden years and take care of your health.
- 15:44Health is wealth. A whole lot of people don't
- 15:47think about their health. They just believe oh I am young,
- 15:50can do whatever I want to do. Some people will not even want
- 15:52to do be like ohh I am young now.
- 15:55I need to enjoy my life. Is it when I'm old I will enjoy
- 15:58my life, enjoy it now. But ohh everything you're doing
- 16:01now is going to come back to you in doing that age during your
- 16:07retirement, they are going to come back to you.
- 16:09So how you want to live, how you plan to live.
- 16:12Your life matters a lot. Delayed gratification, Delay
- 16:17your gratification. You know, it's not about, oh, I
- 16:21want to do this. Think about, sit down and think
- 16:24about what kind of life you want to live in.
- 16:26My 70s. In my 80s.
- 16:28If God allowed me to live up to that level, So what people
- 16:34think, ohh, what if I don't get my 80s?
- 16:36What if I don't get to my 70s? What then happened?
- 16:39I will just suffer and then you know I will not even get to
- 16:42enjoy water. So it's better for me to enjoy
- 16:44it now. Okay, enjoy it now.
- 16:46What if God give you that life to live up to that age?
- 16:51What do you do at that point? Inflation is real.
- 16:56You're buying properties, you're buying bonds, you're buying
- 16:58shares. How many of those, all these
- 17:01people, they did all these things.
- 17:04We have to think strategically in terms of investments,
- 17:08investing, make sure you're earning in dollars, in pounds or
- 17:13you have an investment that's given most of all these
- 17:16celebrities. You can't tell me they're buying
- 17:19brand new cars. Yeah, some of them are faking
- 17:21it, but most of them are making money in dollars.
- 17:24You see them buying Birkin bags, buying these, buy peppering
- 17:28people online. They are not even thinking about
- 17:31your spending night, right? Yes, I get it poor There's going
- 17:36to be a point in your life when Naira will know.
- 17:39Naira will not cut it. There's going to be a point in
- 17:43your life when you're going to need one.
- 17:47Sickness can wipe everything. What do you have in place?
- 17:51You're talking about AG and doesn't have structure or
- 17:54Nigerian government doesn't have structure.
- 17:56What structure are you as an individual putting in place for
- 18:01you to help yourself when you get to that age?
- 18:04We all know Nigeria don't have structure.
- 18:06We all know age and don't have structure.
- 18:08What are you doing? What are you doing?
- 18:13Don't ask. This is saying that.
- 18:14Say don't ask for what you know the country can do for you.
- 18:17Or what? AG asks.
- 18:19What can you do? Do something for yourself so
- 18:24that your future self can be proud of you.
- 18:27This is not to say that you know they've done anything wrong.
- 18:31This is to say that we should learn from these things.
- 18:34We should not leave. Sickness can happen to anybody.
- 18:38You can be, You can you. You can do everything right.
- 18:42You can be walking on the streets.
- 18:44Just there was this story. This guy parked his.
- 18:46You were gone about to cross the road and that was it.
- 18:50So things can happen. But you should not take because
- 18:55such things happen. Don't plan for What if it
- 19:01doesn't happen? When I get there?
- 19:03What will happen? From which I mention one?
- 19:05I got quick recovery and good health.
- 19:08Long life. Because he's a legend.
- 19:11He deserves it. Anyway.
