- 0:28Speaker 3: How are you doing?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Brother, brother?
- 0:30Speaker 1: We got a lot to unpack. Later in the episode,
- 0:32Speaker 1: we're going to be joined by one of the most
- 0:36Speaker 1: beloved people in all of sports media, Chris the Bear Felika,
- 0:43Speaker 1: my former colleague at ESPN now the betting analyst at
- 0:47Speaker 1: Fox Sports, host of Bear Bets the podcast.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Very excited that he's coming on the show. But listen, brother.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Before we get to Chris, we got to get one
- 0:58Speaker 1: of the other most beloved people in all of sports
- 1:01Speaker 1: media and maybe right now in all of Chicago, because
- 1:05Speaker 1: we need to recap our amazing Chicago live show for
- 1:08Speaker 1: this audience. We can't talk about her to promote it
- 1:11Speaker 1: for a month and a half and not let everyone
- 1:12Speaker 1: know how it went quickly as a reminder of The
- 1:17Speaker 1: Favorites podcast is presented by BET three six five, who
- 1:21Speaker 1: also sponsored a live show new BED three sixty five.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Customers get one hundred and fifty dollars in bonus bets.
- 1:26Speaker 1: When you bet five dollars, sign up using promo code
- 1:28Speaker 1: favorites to posit ten dollars. Place a bet for five
- 1:30Speaker 1: dollars to get one hundred and fifty dollars in bonus bets.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Those bonus bets can be used on spreads, totals, player props, futures,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and more.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Whatever the moment, it's never ordinary.
- 1:40Speaker 1: At bet three six five must be twenty one hour
- 1:42Speaker 1: older and present in Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Louisiana,
- 1:47Speaker 1: North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, or eighteen and
- 1:51Speaker 1: older in Kentucky. Gambling problem called one eight hundred gambler
- 1:55Speaker 1: or one eight hundred bets off in Iowa terms. Conditions
- 1:57Speaker 1: restrictions apply. All right, Matt Mitchell, great to see you, buddy.
- 2:03Speaker 1: By the way, Simon, do we not owe Matt Mitchell
- 2:08Speaker 1: a huge bouquet of flowers? He organized the event, He
- 2:13Speaker 1: was in charge of the details, He was the MC
- 2:16Speaker 1: of the event. He puts on an amazing show when
- 2:20Speaker 1: we are there, because it's part you and me talking.
- 2:23Speaker 1: In this case, we had stucky in Jim Ruth join
- 2:25Speaker 1: us for college basketball. But it's really Matt Mitchell taking
- 2:30Speaker 1: what people love about the show and incorporating it into
- 2:35Speaker 1: trivia and games and giveaways with him acting as the
- 2:40Speaker 1: PT Barnum and keeping people occupied.
- 2:43Speaker 4: So Matt Mitchell, welcome to the show. Great job in Chicago.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Chat.
- 2:49Speaker 5: It's like those old Vidal sasuon commercials where he would
- 2:53Speaker 5: end up by saying, if you don't look good, I
- 2:56Speaker 5: don't look good.
- 2:57Speaker 2: And that's how it feels, just.
- 2:59Speaker 4: A man with no that's right. I can appreciate the reference.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Like all of the best hairstylists.
- 3:04Speaker 5: Yes I'm bald as the Dickens, but yes, I had
- 3:10Speaker 5: a great time.
- 3:11Speaker 2: You guys were fabulous.
- 3:12Speaker 5: I want you guys in the correct ed space to
- 3:14Speaker 5: go in glad hand, which is definitely what you guys do.
- 3:17Speaker 2: That's what they want to see.
- 3:19Speaker 5: And they don't want you worried about, you know, handicapping
- 3:21Speaker 5: a Texas Tech basketball game. It's not what they're there for.
- 3:24Speaker 5: So I thought you guys were marvelous, but our fans were.
- 3:27Speaker 5: I mean, people drove from like three hundred miles away
- 3:30Speaker 5: from like two Blum Best in southern Indiana.
- 3:31Speaker 2: It was insane.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I'm always surprised by this, pleasantly surprised and thrilled. I
- 3:37Speaker 1: met a listener who drove five hours from outside Detroit
- 3:42Speaker 1: who like goes deep into the archives and said to me,
- 3:45Speaker 1: you guys never really bring up the Blackjack years, which
- 3:49Speaker 1: is like the year and a half two years where
- 3:51Speaker 1: black Jack Fletcher was a co host of the show
- 3:54Speaker 1: who was a great guy. Just like we morphed into
- 3:57Speaker 1: something different, and then Simon joined the show, but he
- 4:00Speaker 1: was like deep deep into the weeds on Action Content,
- 4:05Speaker 1: going back to ESPN Content, loved that there was a
- 4:09Speaker 1: whole group of buddies who traveled from Columbus. You mentioned
- 4:14Speaker 1: there was a couple from that drove from south of Bloomington, Indiana.
- 4:19Speaker 1: This was their date night away from their kids. Five
- 4:24Speaker 1: or six couples on date nights, and that's always my
- 4:27Speaker 1: favorite at these events. Everyone knows I love love, So
- 4:30Speaker 1: when we see couples coming to the show together, which
- 4:33Speaker 1: happens at every event we've had, there's always a half
- 4:35Speaker 1: dozen that I meet, it's just the best. Half the time,
- 4:38Speaker 1: it's the couple listens to the show together.
- 4:40Speaker 4: Half the time.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Like the kid I met who's a grad student at
- 4:43Speaker 1: Northwestern who dragged his girlfriend to the show.
- 4:47Speaker 4: She ended up talking to me and my death.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, please put a ring on that, brother,
- 4:53Speaker 1: because that is just next level commitment that she's coming
- 4:58Speaker 1: to this god forsaken show with two guys she's never
- 5:00Speaker 1: seen and she ends up talking to my nearly eighty
- 5:03Speaker 1: year old dad.
- 5:04Speaker 6: You we mentioned the real trooper was the guy who
- 5:06Speaker 6: made his girlfriend come that had the torn acllo.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 5:09Speaker 3: And she couldn't have been more of a love. She
- 5:11Speaker 3: was so sweet, so kind.
- 5:13Speaker 6: The fact that she came with that leg into that
- 5:15Speaker 6: bars running by just hooligans. I mean, people were absolutely
- 5:18Speaker 6: out of their minds and I was like, man, I
- 5:20Speaker 6: had go say hi to her. So that was really
- 5:22Speaker 6: cool talking.
- 5:22Speaker 2: To her and her husband, Chad.
- 5:24Speaker 5: That couple that came from southern Indiana was Kent and
- 5:27Speaker 5: Emily Summers, and I remember their name one because they're
- 5:31Speaker 5: just lovely and I hope to see them in Milwaukee,
- 5:34Speaker 5: but also because when the event concluded, Emily and my
- 5:38Speaker 5: wife became the very best of friends for many reasons,
- 5:41Speaker 5: but one of those was that Emily shared that it
- 5:44Speaker 5: had been it had been very tough because she had
- 5:46Speaker 5: had her daughter the week. Sports were canceled in twenty twenty,
- 5:50Speaker 5: and so did. My wife had our youngest Maxine Danger
- 5:53Speaker 5: Mitchell that same week. So bonding over that was a
- 5:57Speaker 5: lot of fun. They were a delight. And yet the
- 6:00Speaker 5: lady with the torny cl I forgot about that. She
- 6:03Speaker 5: was like she couldn't move at all. She was like
- 6:05Speaker 5: they got her in. She sat on a barstool with
- 6:08Speaker 5: her leg on another barstool and that's where she had
- 6:10Speaker 5: to stay around. Yeah, complete hooliganism. I also want to
- 6:13Speaker 5: shout out Chad's father, So if you're at home, I
- 6:16Speaker 5: want you to close your eyes.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Barry Milman, Sure, yeah, just picture Chad.
- 6:20Speaker 5: Noman in an even smaller, older body, just as big
- 6:25Speaker 5: of a mensch, and he looks like Stan Kroncky, the
- 6:28Speaker 5: owner of the Rams. It was a absolute pleasure. He
- 6:33Speaker 5: said the nicest things. What a sweet fellow your dad is.
- 6:37Speaker 4: He is a fantastic guy. I love him to death.
- 6:39Speaker 1: True man, that's a great way to describe so many
- 6:42Speaker 1: people in my life who said to me, oh Berry Moman,
- 6:45Speaker 1: class act menchi Ah, mensche guy.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Speaking to hooligans. You had a group of buddies that
- 6:50Speaker 2: came Chad.
- 6:51Speaker 1: I had high school buddies that came and this was
- 6:53Speaker 1: one of my favorites, Andy, Josh Dave. I got to
- 6:56Speaker 1: hang out with them, which was fantastic. And at one
- 6:59Speaker 1: point they were talking to a bunch of there were
- 7:04Speaker 1: you know, a lot of fans there who listened to
- 7:06Speaker 1: the show, and then a lot of fans who just
- 7:09Speaker 1: brought friends with them, right who don't listen to the show,
- 7:12Speaker 1: and that included This is one of my favorite moments.
- 7:15Speaker 1: This kid who graduated from Indiana, Simon, he grew up
- 7:19Speaker 1: until he was ten years old in Liverpool, moved to
- 7:22Speaker 1: the United States. I told him, your family's from Burnley
- 7:25Speaker 1: and he's like wow, Like even Liverpool looks down on Burnley,
- 7:28Speaker 1: that's how bad Burnley is. And he ended up playing
- 7:32Speaker 1: soccer in Indiana. Indiana has a great soccer program, always
- 7:36Speaker 1: does for generations. So we were talking about Indiana soccer
- 7:40Speaker 1: and they went to the final four, like two of
- 7:41Speaker 1: the three or three or four years he was there.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I went to Indiana. I had been on stage with
- 7:46Speaker 1: you no less than fifteen minutes earlier. And he looks
- 7:50Speaker 1: at me and we're talking and Andy or Josh or Dave,
- 7:54Speaker 1: one of my buddies had says something to me about
- 7:56Speaker 1: the show.
- 7:57Speaker 4: He goes, oh, you're a part of the show. Had
- 8:00Speaker 4: no idea.
- 8:02Speaker 6: Yeah, I would say that was another cool part of
- 8:04Speaker 6: the I have so many cool things me and all
- 8:06Speaker 6: the fans. Was how many people there weren't actually gamblers.
- 8:09Speaker 6: They were just football fans and just fans of me
- 8:11Speaker 6: and Chad, like, which was shocking because I thought everyone
- 8:14Speaker 6: there would be big time gamblers. I talked to a
- 8:17Speaker 6: lot of people there just they love hearing our football opinions.
- 8:19Speaker 6: They love final long during the season, and they love
- 8:21Speaker 6: the off season when we do all the interviews.
- 8:22Speaker 3: So that was great. And yeah, piggyback off.
- 8:25Speaker 6: Like Matt Mitchell said, meeting Chad's dad and Chad's buddies
- 8:30Speaker 6: from kindergarten probably one of my favorite parts.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Like seeing pictures of young Chad was.
- 8:34Speaker 6: Really really funny, especially in your like eighties outfit, got
- 8:38Speaker 6: the high socks, the really short shorts, the T shirts
- 8:42Speaker 6: and then yeah, Matt, Matt Mitchell's wife and you know
- 8:45Speaker 6: the old saying behind every good man is a great woman.
- 8:48Speaker 6: Great woman just so cool, so down and you can tell,
- 8:52Speaker 6: like even talking to her about gambling.
- 8:54Speaker 3: It's like fuck. I love women that love the gamble.
- 8:57Speaker 3: So Matt Mitchell obviously hit a home run.
- 9:00Speaker 6: It was just great too, just run into everybody true
- 9:02Speaker 6: that we work with, right Stucky coming down having drinks
- 9:05Speaker 6: with him.
- 9:05Speaker 3: It was it was a really good time.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Well, dude, you've just transitioned to my favorite part of
- 9:10Speaker 1: the night. And I will say also that the pictures
- 9:15Speaker 1: of me and Simon and my dad are just treasures
- 9:21Speaker 1: because Simon is twice as tall as me and my dad.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I don't think if my dad was standing on my shoulders,
- 9:27Speaker 1: we would be as tall as Simon. My friends loved Simon.
- 9:33Speaker 1: They felt like they had been friends with Simon for
- 9:36Speaker 1: longer than he's been alive.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Someone, I'm invited to the vacation.
- 9:39Speaker 4: You can come on the vacation.
- 9:41Speaker 1: And I forgot that my buddy Dave broke out pictures
- 9:46Speaker 1: of me from overnight camp yourself. But here's my favorite
- 9:50Speaker 1: part of the night. And then well then we'll get
- 9:51Speaker 1: to the show. It's the second half of the Duke game.
- 9:55Speaker 1: It's about to start.
- 9:57Speaker 4: Simon.
- 9:58Speaker 1: You and Irish, goodbye. Irish exited. God only knows when
- 10:03Speaker 1: I could not find you anywhere. I was surprised that
- 10:06Speaker 1: I was still hanging on. At this point, Stucky is
- 10:09Speaker 1: alone in the green room, lamenting all the Texas Tech
- 10:13Speaker 1: futures that he had that had blown up in the
- 10:16Speaker 1: final five minutes of that game. Matt's wife, Carinn is
- 10:21Speaker 1: having the time of her life at the bar, which
- 10:26Speaker 1: she would pay for the next day. Meanwhile, Matt, who
- 10:29Speaker 1: likes to go out and drink all night with Stucky
- 10:33Speaker 1: more than anybody I've ever met in his entire life,
- 10:36Speaker 1: in my entire life, like this dude, if he was Stucky,
- 10:38Speaker 1: he wants to be out until the sun rise. He
- 10:40Speaker 1: has to be somewhat responsible for the entire event. Still,
- 10:43Speaker 1: and I'm talking to a few listeners, including my favorite
- 10:47Speaker 1: email pen pal member of Chicagoland's bravest, huge, lifelong, long
- 10:53Speaker 1: suffering Bears fan, Matt O'Donnell, came to the event.
- 10:58Speaker 4: One of the three fans that I'm.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Talking talking to asks about Mitchell and I point him
- 11:03Speaker 1: out at the bar, and the guy says, and he goes, man,
- 11:06Speaker 1: that guy eats wings with rubber gloves.
- 11:11Speaker 4: That is serious, serial killer vibes.
- 11:15Speaker 2: So smart man. I'll note that he didn't approach me
- 11:18Speaker 2: or talk to me, so that's a good move on
- 11:20Speaker 2: his part.
- 11:20Speaker 1: He didn't time. I was taken over that part of
- 11:26Speaker 1: the bar and nobody was coming in.
- 11:28Speaker 5: Yep, I want to run through, so make sure that
- 11:30Speaker 5: listeners who did not participate here about quickly.
- 11:33Speaker 3: One.
- 11:33Speaker 5: I will say, the pictures of you, your dad and
- 11:36Speaker 5: Simon looked like one of those nesting dolls, but it's
- 11:39Speaker 5: missing several of the intermediary dolls.
- 11:42Speaker 2: You just open up the big one and it's two
- 11:44Speaker 2: little ones in the middle. I loved that. I wanted to.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Pander to your friends directly, Chad in my show intro,
- 11:53Speaker 5: so I started your intro onto the stage with he's
- 11:55Speaker 5: made a lifelong commitment to eating like a small Amazonian bird,
- 11:59Speaker 5: and two of your buddies that they're gonna have a
- 12:01Speaker 5: heart attack, and like that's it. Those are the only
- 12:03Speaker 5: two guys that left at that I thought they.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Were gonna pass out.
- 12:06Speaker 5: So I appreciate that the security guard that Joe's on
- 12:11Speaker 5: Weed shout out Joe's on Weed Elite venue couldn't read
- 12:15Speaker 5: us nice or at unbelievable hospitality. Go there anytime, watch
- 12:20Speaker 5: any game there. Can't recommend them enough. They gave us
- 12:24Speaker 5: a security guard to make sure no one goes upstairs
- 12:26Speaker 5: to the private area. World of our stuff is. He
- 12:29Speaker 5: looks like Ving Raims couldn't have been a nicer guy.
- 12:32Speaker 5: I also had a ton of features on Texas Tech
- 12:34Speaker 5: making the Final Four. While me and stuck here are
- 12:36Speaker 5: having our souls leave our bodies. It's a Florida bar
- 12:40Speaker 5: and he kind of leans over it season I'm not
- 12:42Speaker 5: not having a great time, and he goes, who are
- 12:44Speaker 5: you rooting for? And I realized he was a Florida fan.
- 12:47Speaker 5: He a little Florida pin on and I go, oh, uh, Florida,
- 12:52Speaker 5: and he goes, all right, fix your face. So for
- 12:54Speaker 5: that guy, I pretended to be a Florida fan for
- 12:57Speaker 5: the rest of the evening, So shout out to him.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Loved him him.
- 13:00Speaker 5: And I did have to load the four recliners that
- 13:04Speaker 5: we used. It was too expensive to rent, so we
- 13:07Speaker 5: just said, oh, let's just buy the recliners that the
- 13:09Speaker 5: four stars will sit down on the stage. But obviously
- 13:12Speaker 5: one of those is getting loaded into my car and
- 13:14Speaker 5: driven home because hell, we bought him.
- 13:16Speaker 2: So if anyone in Milwaukee.
- 13:18Speaker 5: Wants a recliner, it's only had an ass on it
- 13:21Speaker 5: for like fifty five total minutes.
- 13:23Speaker 2: You just reach out to me. I'll put it right
- 13:25Speaker 2: out front, you can drive it away.
- 13:26Speaker 5: And then, last, but not least, shout out to an old,
- 13:30Speaker 5: dear friend of mine from the University of Missouri nine
- 13:33Speaker 5: hundred years ago when I was there ad agency creative
- 13:37Speaker 5: dud Lawson, who was one of my favorite people who
- 13:41Speaker 5: loves the show, and I hadn't seen it in a
- 13:43Speaker 5: very long time. I'll note that I said, Hey, didn't
- 13:46Speaker 5: you have an insane business card when we were undergrads
- 13:50Speaker 5: twenty years ago?
- 13:51Speaker 2: Do you have a picture of it?
- 13:52Speaker 5: He goes, yeah, here it is, and he used this
- 13:54Speaker 5: card to get a job when he was twenty two.
- 13:57Speaker 5: The front is just mania with his information, but the
- 14:01Speaker 5: back this is what it reads. There's never anything interesting
- 14:06Speaker 5: written on the back of business cards. So I'm going
- 14:08Speaker 5: to tell you the best story I know. Once there
- 14:11Speaker 5: was this old man who found a bug in a
- 14:13Speaker 5: yellow rock. He used that bug to make some dinosaurs,
- 14:16Speaker 5: and he put those dinosaurs on an island. But before
- 14:20Speaker 5: anybody was allowed to go see the dinosaurs on the island,
- 14:23Speaker 5: a couple of scientists and Jeff Goldbloom had to say
- 14:26Speaker 5: it was safe.
- 14:27Speaker 2: It was not.
- 14:28Speaker 5: Newman tried to steal some of the dinosaurs in a
- 14:30Speaker 5: can of shaving cream, and a guy got eaten by
- 14:33Speaker 5: a t rex while sitting on a toilet. Samuel L.
- 14:35Speaker 5: Jackson was there too. He smoked a lot of cigarettes
- 14:38Speaker 5: and said hold on to your butts twice. That got
- 14:45Speaker 5: him a job because that's the rantings of a madman.
- 14:49Speaker 5: So if you are anywhere in America and you need
- 14:51Speaker 5: an outstanding ad agency creative, his name is Doud Lawson
- 14:56Speaker 5: Doudlawson dot com.
- 14:57Speaker 2: He would hate that I'm doing this right now, but.
- 15:00Speaker 5: He is terrific, one of my oldest and dearest and
- 15:03Speaker 5: I thank you for coming out and thanks for being
- 15:05Speaker 5: a fan of the show.
- 15:06Speaker 1: And maybe Matt most important, our boosted parlay on bet
- 15:09Speaker 1: through five that day was floored on the money line
- 15:13Speaker 1: Duke under usc women. It cashed, So congrats to everybody

- 17:19Speaker 4: Great to see you, and.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Don't forget the college Basketball Crown which is.
- 17:23Speaker 4: Currently That's right, that's a huge event.
- 17:26Speaker 7: I mean that was something where like weeks ago when
- 17:31Speaker 7: the NCAA Tournament started and the people knew this was coming.
- 17:35Speaker 7: It was one of those where like guys that I
- 17:38Speaker 7: know were like, we are just gonna blindly bet the
- 17:41Speaker 7: overs in these games because people are there's gonna be
- 17:44Speaker 7: no defense. People are gonna want to play them and
- 17:47Speaker 7: get boost nil and score and just go out and
- 17:50Speaker 7: have fun. And we saw four games on Monday just
- 17:53Speaker 7: completely soar over the total with relative in these games
- 17:57Speaker 7: were moving seven eight points and they were still going
- 17:59Speaker 7: over easily. Yeah, we added the college basketball crown to
- 18:02Speaker 7: our arsenalism.
- 18:03Speaker 4: What's going on? Man, Hey, listen, that's what I love
- 18:05Speaker 4: about you. There is nothing. This is a little bit.
- 18:08Speaker 1: You and Simon are sort of kindred spirits in this way.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Stanford a little bit too. You guys will fire away
- 18:15Speaker 1: on anything. You will find a way to handicap, examine
- 18:20Speaker 1: the games to discover the edge, no matter the event.
- 18:24Speaker 4: The amount of conversations I've had with.
- 18:26Speaker 1: You going deep in the weeds on horse racing, let alone,
- 18:31Speaker 1: like sports people actually pay attention to over the course
- 18:35Speaker 1: of your life is phenomenal. I love the fact that
- 18:38Speaker 1: you even went deep on the college basketball crown. Simon,
- 18:41Speaker 1: you can relate to that for me, Chad.
- 18:43Speaker 3: The action is the juice.
- 18:45Speaker 4: That's right there.
- 18:46Speaker 6: We go.
- 18:48Speaker 4: Well, you could tell people how you even got into bedding.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Oh god, I was.
- 18:52Speaker 7: I mean, I was like kind of like everyone else,
- 18:55Speaker 7: just a kid from kid from Long Island who grew
- 18:58Speaker 7: up around it, brings home the the parlay cards from
- 19:03Speaker 7: wherever the hell he got of worked all card prepare
- 19:06Speaker 7: shop or whatever the hell and no was but uh yeah,
- 19:08Speaker 7: I was just one of those and then put your
- 19:11Speaker 7: put your allowance on a three or fourteen parlay on
- 19:13Speaker 7: one of those little parlay cards.
- 19:15Speaker 2: However young I was, and I kind of kind of
- 19:18Speaker 2: knew to follow it then. But my my dad's.
- 19:22Speaker 7: Godfather used to write for a racing publication in New York.
- 19:27Speaker 7: We we we had a little a quarter horse track
- 19:30Speaker 7: Suffolk Meadows near where I grew up. We were always
- 19:33Speaker 7: going to the track and we had basically seasoned season
- 19:36Speaker 7: tickets or partial season tickets for Jets, Islanders, Yankees for forever.
- 19:41Speaker 7: So I mean, I was always around sports, and I
- 19:43Speaker 7: always kind of knew the knew the numbers, and knew
- 19:46Speaker 7: what was going on. So I was just kind of
- 19:49Speaker 7: kind of kind of kind of grew up about it.
- 19:50Speaker 7: And then going to school in Miami and being around
- 19:54Speaker 7: football and horse racing down there, it was just kind
- 19:56Speaker 7: of a u and a natural deal. But yeah, no,
- 19:59Speaker 7: it's a it's always dumb. Numbers and betting have always
- 20:03Speaker 7: been a part of my life and it's turned into
- 20:06Speaker 7: kind of a career as well.
- 20:07Speaker 2: So kind of cool.
- 20:09Speaker 4: I do feel like Miami accelerates the process. You think,
- 20:14Speaker 4: I do, I really do.
- 20:16Speaker 1: I think you know, there was so much it's a
- 20:19Speaker 1: sneaky betting capital. Oh yeah, And there's a great story
- 20:27Speaker 1: Miami in the thirties and forties. There was this tug
- 20:32Speaker 1: and pull and the fifties really about the betting community,
- 20:38Speaker 1: and everybody knew in local government all the way up
- 20:41Speaker 1: to the governor that the people who visited Miami in
- 20:47Speaker 1: the winter wanted to be able to bet, and so
- 20:51Speaker 1: they relaxed all the gaming laws in Miami in the winter,
- 20:56Speaker 1: and then as soon as everybody left sort of around March,
- 20:59Speaker 1: there was a literally a one man betting vice squad
- 21:03Speaker 1: who would go around busting up all the bookies and
- 21:07Speaker 1: putting them in jail, finding them they'd try to make
- 21:09Speaker 1: money off the fines whatever, and then as soon as
- 21:12Speaker 1: the winter came back around, everybody was free to do
- 21:15Speaker 1: whatever they want to do. Again, Miami has always had
- 21:17Speaker 1: that edge for betting that would make people want to
- 21:21Speaker 1: bet even more.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:22Speaker 7: Yeah, and certainly you got things like like highlie and
- 21:27Speaker 7: do dog racing down there. When when I was in
- 21:30Speaker 7: school there that kind of a lot of that fixing. Yeah,
- 21:32Speaker 7: you had you had the plenty of on campus bookies
- 21:37Speaker 7: that were willing to appease that I never got paid
- 21:41Speaker 7: by one of them kind of kind of disappointing. We
- 21:45Speaker 7: used to have a little bit of a a routine
- 21:47Speaker 7: where me and my me and my buddies. As soon
- 21:49Speaker 7: as we were done, I would get out of we'd
- 21:52Speaker 7: get out of our last class. We'd get together apartment
- 21:54Speaker 7: thirty three y. We would get together and kind of
- 21:58Speaker 7: come up with our plan for the evening. And at
- 22:00Speaker 7: the time, we used to love We used to love
- 22:03Speaker 7: like the reverses, and we didn't have a ton of money,
- 22:06Speaker 7: so we're betting like twenty five dollars reverses and it
- 22:09Speaker 7: was then like and we used to it was ninety
- 22:12Speaker 7: two ninety three around there, so.
- 22:14Speaker 2: It was like the jazz and the sonics were like great.
- 22:17Speaker 7: So it's in like for like every night we were
- 22:18Speaker 7: doing like a twenty five dollars reverse jazz and sonics
- 22:21Speaker 7: and they were it was winning like every night. And
- 22:24Speaker 7: then uh, then our boyfriend the podcast never paid us,
- 22:26Speaker 7: so it was kind of kind of shitty.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Why how do you not have muscle?
- 22:31Speaker 2: I had? I had no muscle back then.
- 22:34Speaker 7: It was always all, yeah, there's an envelope coming that
- 22:37Speaker 7: I'm getting an envelope today, and then the envelope the
- 22:40Speaker 7: album never came and then it was like, Okay, we
- 22:42Speaker 7: need to we need to stop wasting our time and
- 22:44Speaker 7: disappointing ourselves.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Dude, you know it's freaky. We never even talked about
- 22:47Speaker 1: this when I was starting at Sports Illustrated. This is like,
- 22:53Speaker 1: right out of college, there was a Super Bowl in Miami.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Might have been ninety four, I can't remember.
- 23:00Speaker 2: That would have been Chargers Chargers Donners.
- 23:02Speaker 4: Yes, exactly. I don't know if you were in school
- 23:05Speaker 4: then or not.
- 23:06Speaker 2: I graduated in May ninety four.
- 23:07Speaker 1: All right, So I was in Miami for Sports Illustrator.
- 23:10Speaker 1: We had decided to do a ex Simon wasn't even
- 23:13Speaker 1: born at this point, but uh, we had decided to
- 23:16Speaker 1: do a gambling issue, and because I was one of
- 23:20Speaker 1: the most recent graduates and could still connect with college
- 23:24Speaker 1: students at the magazine I was in Miami and asked
- 23:28Speaker 1: me to start reporting and like talk to kids at
- 23:30Speaker 1: U of M.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Wow.
- 23:32Speaker 1: I ended up doing an entire what's called a sidebar
- 23:36Speaker 1: about bookies at the U.
- 23:39Speaker 4: Of M campus.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Really yeah, wow.
- 23:43Speaker 1: I spent a whole afternoon with a group of kids
- 23:46Speaker 1: who were in a fraternity at U of M who
- 23:48Speaker 1: were booking the Super Bowl.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I wonder.
- 23:52Speaker 7: I wonder if it was the saint one of the
- 23:53Speaker 7: one of the same guys. It could have been very
- 23:56Speaker 7: very easily could have been. Well, we'll have to share share,
- 23:59Speaker 7: We'll have to go back and look it up. So
- 24:01Speaker 7: we have to talk about that off the air. I
- 24:02Speaker 7: don't want to reveal any names, but you will any
- 24:05Speaker 7: trade secrets. But yeah, the the name would be recognizable
- 24:10Speaker 7: to uh, just some people.
- 24:12Speaker 4: That's too funny.
- 24:13Speaker 2: The surname would be would be would be.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Recognizable, Simon.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Doesn't it make a nostalgic for the opportunities to go
- 24:21Speaker 1: book on a college campus?
- 24:23Speaker 2: Oh?
- 24:23Speaker 7: Oh god, if we knew, if we knew now, it's
- 24:26Speaker 7: slim and what we knew, we could have known then
- 24:29Speaker 7: I screwed that up.
- 24:31Speaker 6: The worst part of it though, that that work booking
- 24:34Speaker 6: with college kids and then having a track down when
- 24:36Speaker 6: you actually win to get your money was the worst.
- 24:39Speaker 3: I think everyone went through that, right.
- 24:41Speaker 6: Everyone had that guy that disappeared after he got into
- 24:44Speaker 6: a huge hole with a bunch of different people, and
- 24:46Speaker 6: it's like, oh, that guy just left our school because
- 24:48Speaker 6: he had so many people with money.
- 24:49Speaker 3: So I'm with Chris, it's like the glory days.
- 24:51Speaker 6: But it was also man dealing with that headache of
- 24:53Speaker 6: chasing people and running from people was definitely a thing
- 24:56Speaker 6: of the past.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Well, FeliCa, like, you're an og You've been doing this forever.
- 25:02Speaker 1: You know, we're now legal, We're seven years into being legal.
- 25:07Speaker 1: We're coming up on the seven year anniversary of pass
- 25:10Speaker 1: the Professional Amateur Sports Protection Act being overturned. Like, what
- 25:16Speaker 1: do you see the difference between pre legalization and today?
- 25:20Speaker 1: Even three years ago and today?
- 25:22Speaker 7: You see I mean, obviously you see the market flooded
- 25:26Speaker 7: a lot more, with just a lot more people trying
- 25:28Speaker 7: to get their share of it from whether it's a
- 25:32Speaker 7: pick sellers, social media influencers, just just kind of creating
- 25:37Speaker 7: that crossover between like just okay, here, I know what
- 25:42Speaker 7: I'm talking about and you should pick this. Is it
- 25:44Speaker 7: more of a an information based thing? Is it more
- 25:47Speaker 7: of a an entertainment based thing? Depending on who the
- 25:52Speaker 7: people on social media that you follow, But yeah, I
- 25:55Speaker 7: just know, I almost wonder if we're to point of
- 26:01Speaker 7: or maybe we've reached the point as well. I'd like
- 26:02Speaker 7: to ask if we reached a point of like saturation
- 26:06Speaker 7: in the market, where there's so much information and so
- 26:09Speaker 7: many people out there that we kind of at the
- 26:13Speaker 7: point where we're going to start to eat ourselves and
- 26:15Speaker 7: maybe we're going to see a little bit of a
- 26:17Speaker 7: pullback on You're going to see a lot of people
- 26:20Speaker 7: maybe getting out of it, falling by the wayside, and
- 26:22Speaker 7: it's going to kind of get back to just maybe
- 26:25Speaker 7: not moderation, but fewer people, fewer I don't want to
- 26:31Speaker 7: say talit, fewer pick sellers, fewer accounts out there, or
- 26:35Speaker 7: are we going to continue at this level because it
- 26:37Speaker 7: seems like we're at a point where there's just a
- 26:39Speaker 7: lot of bullshit out there.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Well, look, I feel like in eighteen nineteen twenty, everybody
- 26:47Speaker 1: was trying to figure out how to be a sports
- 26:50Speaker 1: betting media analyst because that was their way to get
- 26:54Speaker 1: on TV. And I think very quickly there was recognition
- 27:01Speaker 1: of where there was authenticity and fluency with the language.
- 27:05Speaker 1: It's not easy to talk about these things and sound
- 27:10Speaker 1: like you know what you're talking about, right, you know, Felika,
- 27:14Speaker 1: When I used to go on Sports Center back in
- 27:17Speaker 1: the day before we started Action and even a little
- 27:21Speaker 1: bit after, the conversation was always who's the anchor who
- 27:26Speaker 1: can talk about totals, who can talk about spreads?
- 27:28Speaker 4: Who can talk.
- 27:28Speaker 1: About bookmakers outside of Scott van Pelt, right, Like, how
- 27:32Speaker 1: are we going to have that conversation? Because the anchors
- 27:36Speaker 1: aren't that comfortable with it, and to their credit, they
- 27:37Speaker 1: don't want to be put in the position where they
- 27:39Speaker 1: are uncomfortable with it. So it's hard to find the
- 27:42Speaker 1: people who can even communicate the language.
- 27:46Speaker 4: I think that's a huge issue. Simon.
- 27:48Speaker 1: You've been sort of growing up in this space the
- 27:51Speaker 1: past five or six years. You probably see a huge
- 27:55Speaker 1: difference between the people who look and sound legit and
- 27:57Speaker 1: the people who you can tell are just sort of
- 27:59Speaker 1: doing it for the face.
- 28:01Speaker 6: Yeah, but it's always been this way, where I think
- 28:03Speaker 6: it's worse because it's so much more in our faces
- 28:05Speaker 6: right with social media.
- 28:06Speaker 3: But you guys grew up in the same thing where
- 28:09Speaker 3: I did. With the eight hundred number.
- 28:10Speaker 6: I mean, there's always guys in the radio selling picks,
- 28:13Speaker 6: selling their bullshit, and.
- 28:14Speaker 3: You'd call up right they do that.
- 28:16Speaker 6: We got three free plays this weekend and went three
- 28:18Speaker 6: to ozer call this number for the one play that
- 28:21Speaker 6: isn't free, Well, it's a guaranteed winner like that that
- 28:24Speaker 6: is instilled into gambling, the folklore and now it's a
- 28:29Speaker 6: little different because it's these faceless people, right, it's these
- 28:31Speaker 6: guys who make these Twitter accounts or social media accounts.
- 28:34Speaker 3: They'll sell picks.
- 28:35Speaker 6: People figure out quickly these guys are frauds, and they'll
- 28:38Speaker 6: delete the account and then make a new account and
- 28:40Speaker 6: then hit one of their parlays, post a ticket, get
- 28:42Speaker 6: people sucked in again. So I do think it's we're
- 28:45Speaker 6: in the weird stage of these people need to go
- 28:47Speaker 6: through these frauds and realize this is not a get
- 28:51Speaker 6: rich scheme, Like you're not gonna win millions of dollars
- 28:54Speaker 6: on parlays in your first year of gambling. And you
- 28:58Speaker 6: know that's the toughest part to watch it, because you know,
- 29:01Speaker 6: what are we supposed to do?
- 29:01Speaker 3: We all we can do. I'm saying Chris has the
- 29:03Speaker 3: same idea.
- 29:04Speaker 6: I can only focus on myself and try to be
- 29:05Speaker 6: as best as I can put out the best info
- 29:07Speaker 6: I can put out that I know is legit, rather
- 29:09Speaker 6: than waste time just bad mouthing all these people all
- 29:12Speaker 6: the time because.
- 29:13Speaker 3: There's no point.
- 29:13Speaker 6: Like That's why I love what we do is because
- 29:15Speaker 6: eventually you're gonna get figured out, like people if they're
- 29:18Speaker 6: gonna track you and follow your picks.
- 29:19Speaker 3: They're gonna eventually figure out, Okay, this dude's a fraud.
- 29:22Speaker 6: So I'm with Chris, like, I hate that side of it,
- 29:24Speaker 6: but luckily, I think we're kind of on the back
- 29:26Speaker 6: end of it. I think eventually people are getting kind
- 29:29Speaker 6: of wiser to it. And you know, me and Chat
- 29:32Speaker 6: we talk about this all the time. The news shift
- 29:34Speaker 6: is definitely the parlays, right, That's that's the new thing
- 29:37Speaker 6: in the sports media stuff where you know, me and
- 29:39Speaker 6: Chat like to give out our straight bets. We're now
- 29:43Speaker 6: in a position of, you know, maybe we should give
- 29:45Speaker 6: out one or two parlays a week because that's what
- 29:46Speaker 6: people like the bet. So that's that's an easy adjustment
- 29:49Speaker 6: we're trying to make, right Chat, We're trying to adjust
- 29:51Speaker 6: to what the people like the bet in the market.
- 29:53Speaker 6: Where as professionals we advise against it. But if it's
- 29:57Speaker 6: for fun, right, if there's a difference between betting five
- 30:00Speaker 6: I was on a game and betting one hundred dollars
- 30:01Speaker 6: on a parlay, right, So that's what we're trying to
- 30:03Speaker 6: really get into now.
- 30:04Speaker 3: And I'm with Chris though, like there's some stuff.
- 30:07Speaker 6: That makes my blood boil boil, that I see online
- 30:09Speaker 6: and I just I butite my tongue because I know
- 30:11Speaker 6: there's there's no there's no point, right, it's that crab mentality.
- 30:14Speaker 6: They'll just pull you down with you into the bucket,
- 30:16Speaker 6: so there's no point of viewing jumping in. They're just
- 30:18Speaker 6: gonna pull you down.
- 30:19Speaker 3: So it is tough.
- 30:20Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, you know what, just let them, let them.
- 30:23Speaker 7: You don't interact with them. You just let them do
- 30:25Speaker 7: their thing. And it's kind of out of sight, out
- 30:28Speaker 7: of mind. But but you did bring up something funny,
- 30:30Speaker 7: and I do have to just say now and now
- 30:33Speaker 7: a message from the world famous chiny DeMarco, the ex
- 30:39Speaker 7: coach doctor Ron Beash has a five star winner. There
- 30:45Speaker 7: used to be that used to be Saturday morning ritual
- 30:49Speaker 7: on a prior to college game day, seven am. We
- 30:53Speaker 7: would get to the site and Fowler was like Fowler
- 30:58Speaker 7: was like leading the charge because he just all of
- 31:00Speaker 7: the laughable entertainment value we'd throw on the sports advisors
- 31:05Speaker 7: and you'd.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Have Stu Feiner and Ron Besh and whoever the.
- 31:10Speaker 7: Hell Kelson maybe Kelso Sturgeon, all all of the Jim Feist,
- 31:16Speaker 7: all all the the capers of the day, the TV
- 31:20Speaker 7: cappers and we used to just you'd have you'd have
- 31:23Speaker 7: Stu Finer in front of a green screen of Arrowhead
- 31:26Speaker 7: Stadium behind him, and I'd literally see his face in
- 31:29Speaker 7: just nine hundred numbers and eight hundred numbers. It's flashing stars.
- 31:34Speaker 7: We we watching the sports Advisors on Saturday morning. Used
- 31:37Speaker 7: to be the uh, the way we would get fired
- 31:40Speaker 7: up for college game day. He just instant last it
- 31:42Speaker 7: was great.
- 31:43Speaker 4: Well, I do think there's you know, it's Felika.
- 31:45Speaker 1: We just had this event in Chicago over the weekend
- 31:48Speaker 1: and we had you know, a few several hundred people
- 31:50Speaker 1: that came.
- 31:52Speaker 4: Yeah, listen, it was available, it was free. It was
- 31:54Speaker 4: free for the public.
- 31:57Speaker 1: You could have come out. But next time you can
- 31:59Speaker 1: be a special. That would be a fun one. Get
- 32:01Speaker 1: Falika to comby a special guest. I was talking to
- 32:04Speaker 1: a bunch of kids who just graduated from Indiana. It's
- 32:08Speaker 1: the son of a buddy of mine and all of
- 32:11Speaker 1: his friends. All these really smart guys, really smart guys,
- 32:17Speaker 1: not sort of the sort of Indiana kids who don't
- 32:22Speaker 1: major in business. These were the top of the top
- 32:25Speaker 1: at Indiana and they want to be betting heroes. They
- 32:30Speaker 1: were excited about the same game parlay that they cashed
- 32:34Speaker 1: for fifteen hundred dollars, and I looked at the guy
- 32:39Speaker 1: and he thought I was going to be like, oh
- 32:41Speaker 1: my god, that's amazing. I'm like, yeah, you and every
- 32:43Speaker 1: other fuck are on the internet and it's like all
- 32:46Speaker 1: anybody will talk about is cashing their five dollars for
- 32:50Speaker 1: fifteen hundred dollars ticket.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:54Speaker 7: It's like as you look at like your thumb across
- 32:58Speaker 7: your kings and FanDuel lugs, that's all I have early
- 33:02Speaker 7: access to in Connecticut here, and it's just like same
- 33:04Speaker 7: game parlay at thirty thirty, same game. I'm looking for
- 33:06Speaker 7: like a like a nice deposit bonus or like a
- 33:09Speaker 7: fifty boost on a single game or an underdog.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Same game parlay, same game parlay, same game parla.
- 33:16Speaker 4: I'm like, come on, I'm not gonna happen.
- 33:19Speaker 2: I know.
- 33:21Speaker 1: So that's impactful for you because you transitioned from sort
- 33:29Speaker 1: of back of the house sometimes on camera but mostly
- 33:34Speaker 1: producing supporting, researching, to now being fully on camera as a.
- 33:42Speaker 4: Straight down the barrel sports betting talent. Is it what
- 33:48Speaker 4: you expected?
- 33:50Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, it's been great, and it's something that.
- 33:55Speaker 7: When we when we were at ESPN and when when
- 33:57Speaker 7: perhaps the first first got overturned, like the guys involved
- 34:00Speaker 7: on game Day new fraud, and that was people always
- 34:03Speaker 7: ask me like, like what we you like? Maybe maybe
- 34:05Speaker 7: they'll ask me or I'll just volunteer and say, like
- 34:09Speaker 7: the thing I was most proud of in my time
- 34:11Speaker 7: at college game day and my time it was like
- 34:15Speaker 7: being at the forefront of getting wagering type information out there,
- 34:20Speaker 7: whether whether it was a reaction to a spread or
- 34:24Speaker 7: a historical note that might find a game interesting. We
- 34:27Speaker 7: didn't beat around the butch. We knew people were betting
- 34:31Speaker 7: on games, and we were just gonna be in the forefront.
- 34:33Speaker 7: Like but the challenge for us before it was free
- 34:39Speaker 7: and legal, and it wasn't the wild Wild West. Was
- 34:41Speaker 7: just a way to phrase it and get it out
- 34:44Speaker 7: there where it isn't just like, ok we're laying eight
- 34:46Speaker 7: and a half with Ohio State today. It was like, Okay,
- 34:49Speaker 7: they had the odds makers expect Michigan State to lose
- 34:53Speaker 7: today against the number one Ohio State.
- 34:56Speaker 2: They're a ten point underdog. But keep in mind.
- 35:00Speaker 7: Games at Michigan State, where Mark d Antonio's team has
- 35:02Speaker 7: been a double digit underdog, they've won nine of them
- 35:05Speaker 7: out right and covered that. So it's like a way
- 35:07Speaker 7: to make it informative where the average fan who wasn't
- 35:10Speaker 7: gonna bet on a game still might find that interesting.
- 35:13Speaker 7: But the fact that we're ably able to do that
- 35:15Speaker 7: made me very happy at game day. And I think, uh,
- 35:18Speaker 7: not only myself, but Lea Fitting who was the producer
- 35:20Speaker 7: for the time for a long time, Fowler Herbstreet. They
- 35:24Speaker 7: always saw this by it and it's the same thing
- 35:27Speaker 7: that you saw when you met me and ran into me.
- 35:30Speaker 7: Just the passion and the knowledge and the getting animated
- 35:34Speaker 7: and getting the New York Hans and voice going loud
- 35:37Speaker 7: and and they're like, we need to capture this on television.
- 35:41Speaker 7: And then finally they were like, okay, game Day expanded
- 35:45Speaker 7: to like three hours, and it was like, you've got
- 35:49Speaker 7: no more say in the matter.
- 35:50Speaker 2: We're I was always worried.
- 35:51Speaker 7: I don't want to look like an idiot and start
- 35:54Speaker 7: rambling and get going. And I didn't necessarily worry about
- 35:58Speaker 7: like freezing or being scared of doing it.
- 36:00Speaker 2: I was just like, I don't know. And then finally, no,
- 36:02Speaker 2: we're doing it, and I'm glad. I'm glad we did.
- 36:05Speaker 7: We were able to figure out away with the board
- 36:07Speaker 7: and just kind of interacting and throwing some historical nuggets
- 36:10Speaker 7: in there at times, and it worked out well. And
- 36:13Speaker 7: that's one of the things that I don't want to
- 36:16Speaker 7: say it's pushbacker bows and arrows, but it's just a
- 36:20Speaker 7: little bit of depending on on your viewpoint of things,
- 36:24Speaker 7: like one of the things right now where I don't
- 36:26Speaker 7: struggle with it because I'm free, I'm fully transparent.
- 36:30Speaker 2: I say like, I'm I'm a researcher at heart.
- 36:32Speaker 7: That's how I got started in sports and numbers and
- 36:37Speaker 7: math and history and studying and digging through media guides
- 36:40Speaker 7: for a note in the middle of the night, like
- 36:42Speaker 7: all o, I'll come up with the historical, like a
- 36:44Speaker 7: bunch of historical notes about the NCAA tournament and what.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Does this have to do with this year? And I like,
- 36:50Speaker 2: potentially nothing.
- 36:52Speaker 7: I'm a I'm a historian, I'm a researcher at heart,
- 36:55Speaker 7: and I'm just throwing some inform. Not everything that I
- 36:57Speaker 7: put out there has to be gambling, really, but I
- 37:01Speaker 7: will say this a lot of like the specific things
- 37:04Speaker 7: that I'll tweet out during football season about maybe an
- 37:09Speaker 7: unranked team favored by a certain number over a top
- 37:13Speaker 7: fifteen team or whatever. Like, the teams may be different,
- 37:18Speaker 7: but the types of teams and the situations remain the same.
- 37:22Speaker 7: So I do think there is some value in some
- 37:24Speaker 7: of those situational type type deals where you've got things
- 37:28Speaker 7: that fit a system. Even though, like I said, might
- 37:32Speaker 7: when I make a game in two thousand and four
- 37:35Speaker 7: between Miami and Florida State might not have anything to
- 37:39Speaker 7: do with it between a game between Ohio State and
- 37:42Speaker 7: Michigan in twenty twenty four, But if the situation works
- 37:47Speaker 7: then then then it's still something I think that that's
- 37:49Speaker 7: interesting and maybe follow away in the back of the mind.
- 37:52Speaker 4: You know, it's funny you bring that up. We have
- 37:55Speaker 4: Evan Abrams, who I'm sure.
- 37:56Speaker 2: You are from.
- 37:57Speaker 4: Where is he by the way, I don't know where
- 37:59Speaker 4: he is right now, Matt mc.
- 38:01Speaker 2: I saw him on the invite. Yeah, Oh he's busy
- 38:03Speaker 2: doing March Madness videos for me.
- 38:06Speaker 4: Oh he's doing something else.
- 38:07Speaker 1: But you know, he'll come on the show every week
- 38:09Speaker 1: during the football season and he will always come on
- 38:13Speaker 1: and oh he's in there, he's in the chat, and
- 38:17Speaker 1: he will always come on and he will give this
- 38:19Speaker 1: incredible information similar to what you were just talking about
- 38:22Speaker 1: And I think the hardest part, Simon, I want you
- 38:25Speaker 1: to weigh in on this because I think this is
- 38:26Speaker 1: important for people listening is trying to decide how much
- 38:32Speaker 1: to let historical trends and precedents influence what we are
- 38:37Speaker 1: looking at in the moment. For me, it's always a
- 38:41Speaker 1: little bit of a mind fuck. I get it's hard
- 38:43Speaker 1: to determine when to lean into that and when to not.
- 38:48Speaker 6: Yeah, but we say all the time chat it's just
- 38:50Speaker 6: another tool in the toolbox, like it's just something else
- 38:52Speaker 6: you can use try to find an edge. And I
- 38:55Speaker 6: love it because I am a big believer that history
- 38:58Speaker 6: just always repeats itself, Like you're always gonna have of
- 39:00Speaker 6: the outliers, right, Like Lesser City winning the Premier League
- 39:04Speaker 6: never gonna happen again the rest of our lives. Right,
- 39:06Speaker 6: This team that was five thousand to one to win
- 39:09Speaker 6: the Premier League never gonna happen. You know, Villan Nova
- 39:12Speaker 6: that what was eighty five having that crazy run, probably
- 39:15Speaker 6: never gonna see something like that ever again in the rest.
- 39:17Speaker 3: Of our lives. Those are outliers.
- 39:18Speaker 6: But a lot of other stuff, like you really dive
- 39:20Speaker 6: into your break it down. It's great info and something
- 39:23Speaker 6: you should really listen to and take serious. Like Evan
- 39:25Speaker 6: came on and literally told us if a team's greater
- 39:27Speaker 6: than what was it, eighteen to one or fifteen to
- 39:29Speaker 6: one to win March Badness, they're not gonna win.
- 39:32Speaker 3: Like historical data shows us the top favorites.
- 39:35Speaker 6: Even when it's a crazy year and George Mason's making a.
- 39:39Speaker 3: Final four, the Chalk team still is probably gonna win
- 39:42Speaker 3: the end.
- 39:42Speaker 6: And here we're sitting now with four teams in the
- 39:44Speaker 6: final four, and it's like, Okay, this is why Evan
- 39:46Speaker 6: gives us those type of stats where it's like this
- 39:48Speaker 6: might not ring true, but I'm trying to give you
- 39:50Speaker 6: guys an edge and the fact that mathematically, if you're
- 39:53Speaker 6: betting these long shot odds on these March Badness it's
- 39:56Speaker 6: a dumb bet. Go with the Chalk long term the
- 39:59Speaker 6: future market, it's going to pay out. And I mean,
- 40:01Speaker 6: like we just said, here we are, and it's like,
- 40:02Speaker 6: that's why Evan gives out that info. It's it's good info,
- 40:05Speaker 6: but he's not telling you to do it. He's just
- 40:07Speaker 6: showing you a path of the way that it could go.
- 40:09Speaker 6: That's why I love that stuff. It's like another great
- 40:11Speaker 6: tool to use.
- 40:12Speaker 7: And that's one of the things too, Like I I
- 40:15Speaker 7: was like, when you when you fill out your bracket,
- 40:17Speaker 7: your odds are you're only gonna want to use it
- 40:19Speaker 7: in most two number one seeds because people are gonna
- 40:22Speaker 7: think that all than all the number ones are gonna
- 40:23Speaker 7: get through. And it just happened to be an outlier
- 40:26Speaker 7: that that's gonna be a great question moving forward.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Is this year an outlier we're all for it.
- 40:31Speaker 7: Is it just a situation where these four or five
- 40:34Speaker 7: teams were just better than everyone else, or is this
- 40:37Speaker 7: gonna be the norm moving forward where we're gonna get
- 40:39Speaker 7: three or four number one seed.
- 40:41Speaker 2: But but that's one of all they're gonna we're good,
- 40:43Speaker 2: We're gonna get all four this year.
- 40:45Speaker 7: But I'm just thinking of like a historical play on
- 40:49Speaker 7: like game theory, like if you're filling out.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Your bracket, like you want to differentiate your bracket and
- 40:54Speaker 2: not have awful but hey this year.
- 40:56Speaker 7: But you know, as a fan, that's the thing that
- 40:59Speaker 7: a lot of peop people struggle sometimes as separating better
- 41:03Speaker 7: and fan like as a fan, having these four teams
- 41:06Speaker 7: the best four teams that we've said all year long,
- 41:08Speaker 7: and watching them play is great as a better not
- 41:11Speaker 7: having a single money line upset in the in the
- 41:13Speaker 7: in the Elite eight or the Sweet sixteen, and the
- 41:16Speaker 7: fewest historical upsets ever in terms of points spread, it.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Hasn't been great as it better.
- 41:21Speaker 7: I mean maybe maybe it's a year where the public
- 41:23Speaker 7: is doing Look the NFL public did great in the NFL.
- 41:27Speaker 2: I'm sure public's done great in college basketball. No underdogs
- 41:30Speaker 2: that won.
- 41:30Speaker 7: Yeah, this is an easy business, Chad and Simon, money
- 41:33Speaker 7: line parlay all the favorites all.
- 41:35Speaker 1: The time, right, yeah, sure, what has surprised you about this,
- 41:42Speaker 1: this tournament that has these four number one c's.
- 41:46Speaker 4: Do you think that there is a sea change?
- 41:48Speaker 1: We're always trying to figure out get ahead of the market,
- 41:51Speaker 1: right in any respect? And I want to to ask
- 41:54Speaker 1: you about the NFL too. Last year was a really
- 41:57Speaker 1: hard year for NFL underdogs. This year has been a
- 41:59Speaker 1: really hard year for college basketball underdogs. Is this an anomaly?
- 42:04Speaker 1: Is this a sea change?
- 42:06Speaker 7: I don't want to overreact, certainly in college basketball because
- 42:11Speaker 7: people the knee jerk reaction, and maybe maybe it's gonna
- 42:14Speaker 7: prove to not be a knee jerk reaction.
- 42:17Speaker 3: Is that?
- 42:17Speaker 2: Oh? Nil? Has destroyed it.
- 42:19Speaker 7: All these mid majors and low major their best players
- 42:22Speaker 7: are gonna go to all of these teams and they're
- 42:26Speaker 7: they're gonna dominate and you're not gonna get these seed updates,
- 42:29Speaker 7: seed up upsets in the tournament anymore, or they were
- 42:31Speaker 7: just the points sport upsets. But I don't know, if
- 42:34Speaker 7: I want to just I'm not there yet. You look
- 42:37Speaker 7: at the last like you look at the last four years,
- 42:40Speaker 7: the seeds in the final four.
- 42:41Speaker 2: You had two number ones.
- 42:43Speaker 7: Last year, but you had a San Diego State who
- 42:46Speaker 7: was an eight seed and a Yukon who was a bad,
- 42:49Speaker 7: badly seeded team. They were four seed, but you had
- 42:51Speaker 7: Miami get to the final four. You had NC stated
- 42:54Speaker 7: is an eleven. You've had all these low all these
- 42:57Speaker 7: low seeds make the final four. So I don't know,
- 43:00Speaker 7: and you had I think the last I went back
- 43:03Speaker 7: and look yesterday I tweeted it out, but I think,
- 43:04Speaker 7: off the top of my head, it was like the
- 43:06Speaker 7: previous four years you had like eighteen, eighteen, twenty, and
- 43:10Speaker 7: nineteen upsets in the tournament to this point where you
- 43:14Speaker 7: had eleven this year.
- 43:15Speaker 2: So like, I'm not willing to say this is going
- 43:19Speaker 2: to be a year in, year out type deal. So
- 43:22Speaker 2: I hope I'm wrong. I think we can get this
- 43:25Speaker 2: is a happy medium here.
- 43:27Speaker 7: There's a happy medium of getting the upsets early in
- 43:29Speaker 7: the tournament, but having your your higher seeds win in
- 43:33Speaker 7: the elite, Elite eight in the Elite. In the Sweet sixteen,
- 43:35Speaker 7: you get a final four with two ones, a two,
- 43:39Speaker 7: and a three, and you get that. Maybe you get
- 43:41Speaker 7: an eleven seed in this Sweet sixteen, or you get
- 43:44Speaker 7: a ten seed or whatever.
- 43:45Speaker 2: But getting back was funny.
- 43:47Speaker 7: I was thinking thinking to what Simon was saying about
- 43:50Speaker 7: some of the stuff that Evan and I have put
- 43:51Speaker 7: out there, like how history tends to repeat itself. And
- 43:55Speaker 7: I think one of the interesting things was it's something
- 43:58Speaker 7: that Evan might have been involved in looking it up
- 44:01Speaker 7: initially when I was at ESPN with Keith Lipskimb as well,
- 44:04Speaker 7: when we put together the NCAA tournament pack. It was
- 44:08Speaker 7: just this kind of and I don't know if it
- 44:10Speaker 7: was with West Virginia one year, I don't know if
- 44:13Speaker 7: it was with Iowa Stay, I don't know who the
- 44:16Speaker 7: team was, but like these unranked teams at the start
- 44:20Speaker 7: of the year that wind up getting a two seed
- 44:23Speaker 7: and you had two of them this year in Michigan
- 44:25Speaker 7: State and Saint John's where they were unranked at the
- 44:28Speaker 7: start of the year. You have this completely off the
- 44:31Speaker 7: charts great regular season, and the previous thirty nine teams
- 44:34Speaker 7: to do it, none of them reached the final four.
- 44:37Speaker 7: And the theory is these teams that weren't necessarily thought
- 44:40Speaker 7: to be good before the year, magical runs to the
- 44:43Speaker 7: final four in the national title games just typically don't
- 44:46Speaker 7: come from nowhere in that sense, and it wind up
- 44:50Speaker 7: did hold in true again this year WITHOU Saint John's
- 44:52Speaker 7: and Michigan State coming up just short.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Spartans made a good run.
- 44:56Speaker 4: But that's what's great about that.
- 44:58Speaker 1: We can all a complain, all the x ESPN heads complain,
- 45:03Speaker 1: can complain about a lot of things at ESPN. ESPN
- 45:08Speaker 1: freaking loves sports, yes, and the research to me, the
- 45:13Speaker 1: research group, whether it was you know, UH SIG or
- 45:18Speaker 1: any other part of it, like those are diehards. What
- 45:21Speaker 1: you and Evan would do in that entire team that
- 45:24Speaker 1: was involved in research in any way UH would do
- 45:28Speaker 1: with research and come up with those stats.
- 45:31Speaker 4: It's freaking glorious.
- 45:33Speaker 7: It was, And in part of it too, is just
- 45:36Speaker 7: you having the the financial backing and the creative backing
- 45:42Speaker 7: of being able to say, Evan Bear, go go build
- 45:46Speaker 7: an NCAA tournament database, Uh, go build an ap poll
- 45:50Speaker 7: database with all the historical spread like like being able
- 45:54Speaker 7: to just given free reign to be able to do
- 45:56Speaker 7: that and knowing that you're you're going to get a
- 45:59Speaker 7: payoff off of that was just incredible.
- 46:01Speaker 2: And still use it today, update him and have my
- 46:05Speaker 2: own stuff and do it.
- 46:07Speaker 4: It's great true story. In twenty seventeen, when.
- 46:12Speaker 1: I had gotten the call from the Churning Group, who
- 46:16Speaker 1: was the company and the private equity business that wanted
- 46:21Speaker 1: to launch what would become Action.
- 46:24Speaker 4: It wasn't anything yet.
- 46:25Speaker 1: They called and said, do you want to come found
- 46:28Speaker 1: this sports media betting business with us? And I was debating,
- 46:34Speaker 1: am I going to leave a very comfortable life overseeing
- 46:38Speaker 1: ESPN Digital and living in Central Connecticut? Bear and like
- 46:45Speaker 1: a kid who was a freshman in high school and
- 46:48Speaker 1: you know a little bit another kid who was a
- 46:49Speaker 1: little bit younger, and they've got a great life. Am
- 46:51Speaker 1: I going to dump that to go to this startup
- 46:56Speaker 1: make half as much money on the hope that it
- 46:59Speaker 1: will all get paid back if we sell it. One day,
- 47:02Speaker 1: I'm sitting with John Skipper, who was the president of
- 47:04Speaker 1: ESPN at the time, and one of the things he
- 47:06Speaker 1: offered me to stay was to take over Stats and Information,
- 47:11Speaker 1: which called SIG, which is like a two to three
- 47:13Speaker 1: hundred person group that is the heartbeat of every stat
- 47:17Speaker 1: every bit of research you see across every show at ESPN.
- 47:23Speaker 1: I think it is an amazing group.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Wasn't enough though, I was gonna say that that's a scoop? Yeah?
- 47:31Speaker 2: I know that.
- 47:32Speaker 4: Wowse are good times.
- 47:35Speaker 2: Bear.
- 47:36Speaker 1: I want to ask you a little bit about the
- 47:37Speaker 1: NFL because you had a tweet the other day. Simon
- 47:41Speaker 1: read the tweet that he had because I feel like
- 47:43Speaker 1: you and I and Chris I'll have difference of opinion
- 47:47Speaker 1: on this particular topic.
- 47:50Speaker 6: Yeah, Bear, I thought it was really interesting you tweeted out,
- 47:52Speaker 6: you know, four or five days ago that you would
- 47:54Speaker 6: love to know how the QP position and depth and
- 47:56Speaker 6: development got so bad in the NFL. Is it a
- 47:58Speaker 6: college things? The guy's been said freegency that makes zero
- 48:01Speaker 6: Sense's what's your viewing that you just think we have
- 48:04Speaker 6: really shitty QB player? Are you just talking about the
- 48:06Speaker 6: back end, like the back five to thirty two.
- 48:09Speaker 7: Guy, it just amazes me that we are at a
- 48:13Speaker 7: point in twenty twenty five head the season that like
- 48:18Speaker 7: there is a demand that Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers
- 48:24Speaker 7: and Justin Fields like are like considered starting quarterbacks Like
- 48:30Speaker 7: like like, I don't know where where his the I
- 48:33Speaker 7: think someone who replied back like it's not that different.
- 48:36Speaker 7: There's always been really bad quarterback play at the end.
- 48:40Speaker 7: But is someone who watched the Jets last year like
- 48:46Speaker 7: I look, I love I rooted for Aaron. I was
- 48:49Speaker 7: excited when he came to the Jets, and it sucked
- 48:52Speaker 7: that the ruptured his achilles when he when he did it,
- 48:55Speaker 7: you're looking at a guy now that what's again forty
- 48:57Speaker 7: one started the year coming off with an achilles injury?
- 49:00Speaker 7: Like is the market that bad that you're really looking
- 49:04Speaker 7: to run out there and have this guy who with times.
- 49:07Speaker 2: Last year looked like he was done. Like if you're.
- 49:10Speaker 7: Mike Tomlin and the Steelers, are you is that really
- 49:13Speaker 7: your your end game? And I guess part of the
- 49:16Speaker 7: problem too is maybe it's just a league wide pandemic
- 49:20Speaker 7: where so much of the league.
- 49:22Speaker 2: Maybe is in the middle.
- 49:24Speaker 7: But you look at what look at what the uh
- 49:28Speaker 7: the the Bear like Joe justin fields like left and
- 49:34Speaker 7: like what he was able to what the Bears like
- 49:36Speaker 7: got for him, and there was no mark of him.
- 49:37Speaker 7: And now he's making whatever it is, like like it's
- 49:40Speaker 7: insane what the Jets are paying him compared to what
- 49:43Speaker 7: the market really really was for him that just a
- 49:45Speaker 7: year prior. But I lost my trainer of thought there.
- 49:48Speaker 7: But oh yeah, the Steelers had that. You're a perfect example.
- 49:52Speaker 7: They're a team that needs a quarterback. But like so
- 49:55Speaker 7: much of the league now with the parody and everyone's
- 49:58Speaker 7: in the middle, it's the worst place to be in
- 50:01Speaker 7: the NFL. And like you kind of think, Okay, we're
- 50:04Speaker 7: a quarterback away, we need that with one piece of
- 50:07Speaker 7: maybe it's lightning in a bottle with Russell Wilson. Maybe
- 50:09Speaker 7: we get one year at Aaron Rodgers and it's magic.
- 50:14Speaker 7: But like, you're never good enough to like make the
- 50:18Speaker 7: super Bowl, but you're never bottoming out where you're in
- 50:20Speaker 7: a position to draft a quarterback who's ultimately going to
- 50:24Speaker 7: be a team a team changer and get you on
- 50:27Speaker 7: court your year. You're you're nine and eight, you're making
- 50:30Speaker 7: the playoffs as a wild card. You're picking eighteenth every
- 50:32Speaker 7: year and it's like the worst place to be in
- 50:34Speaker 7: this So maybe that's part of it as well. But
- 50:37Speaker 7: maybe the college part of it as well, with with
- 50:39Speaker 7: the RPO and the in some of these spread offenses.
- 50:42Speaker 7: Maybe the maybe with the portal now in college football
- 50:46Speaker 7: where guys staying in the league earlier, they're older. I
- 50:49Speaker 7: don't I don't know what the answer is. I'm curious
- 50:51Speaker 7: to get your guys takes out, but it's just fascinating
- 50:53Speaker 7: to me that we're just kind of recycling these same
- 50:56Speaker 7: guys over and over again again. And maybe I don't
- 51:00Speaker 7: claim might know everything about the position, but it's amazing
- 51:04Speaker 7: the sport that I watch every Saturday, like and see
- 51:08Speaker 7: some of the guys that are there, I'm like, why
- 51:10Speaker 7: can't these guys be quarterbacks in the NFL.
- 51:14Speaker 6: We've definitely seen a switch to where you know, we
- 51:17Speaker 6: had that lost generation right with that Andrew Luck RG three,
- 51:21Speaker 6: Like the only guys that felt like survived it was
- 51:23Speaker 6: Stafford and Rogers, right that little like two guys out
- 51:26Speaker 6: of that whole group that ten year run. We just
- 51:28Speaker 6: even when Cam Newton came in, he had a year
- 51:30Speaker 6: or two like a really incredible but was sustainable and
- 51:33Speaker 6: we've seen now, I think just because athleticism now has
- 51:36Speaker 6: moved to be such a crucial part of the quarterback position.
- 51:39Speaker 6: Like you know, along like Tom Brady. As much I
- 51:42Speaker 6: love Tom, we all know he's the goat. He wouldn't
- 51:45Speaker 6: be in the league now. Like you go back and
- 51:47Speaker 6: look at his tape from back in the night.
- 51:48Speaker 4: It's crazy.
- 51:49Speaker 6: He had he had led in his shoes, Chad. He
- 51:51Speaker 6: could not move, he could not run. You can't be
- 51:54Speaker 6: a drop back standing in the pocket pass and then
- 51:56Speaker 6: I fun anymore. If you are, you're gonna be Derek Carr.
- 51:59Speaker 6: You want Derek Carr and your team, Chad. No, you
- 52:02Speaker 6: don't want a guy who just stands back there. And
- 52:04Speaker 6: you don't want that anymore. It's evolved, right, You need
- 52:07Speaker 6: a mobile guy who can move, just because the athleticism
- 52:10Speaker 6: is just off the charts now. And it's funny going back,
- 52:12Speaker 6: even like I I before he came out, I went
- 52:14Speaker 6: back and looked and you know what were we working
- 52:17Speaker 6: with in two thousand and five, Like who were the
- 52:19Speaker 6: bottom guys? Because I just want to look at what
- 52:21Speaker 6: Chris was talking about here, and I looked at the
- 52:23Speaker 6: passing leaders, right, Dina looking at rushing just the passing leaders.
- 52:26Speaker 6: In two thousand and five, the bottom of the list
- 52:29Speaker 6: the worst quarterback in football Chris Simms not a shocker left,
- 52:33Speaker 6: Witch was right above him, Trent Dilfer right above him,
- 52:37Speaker 6: David Carr right above him. So it's like Aaron Brooks
- 52:41Speaker 6: right above him. So we've always had just the shit
- 52:43Speaker 6: at the bottom.
- 52:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree with you.
- 52:45Speaker 6: Now it feels like it's more so because everyone wants
- 52:49Speaker 6: alive to themselves to be like, well the forty nine
- 52:51Speaker 6: ers got there with Jimmy Garoppolo right, Or you could
- 52:53Speaker 6: say that Eli Manning got to two super Bowls and
- 52:56Speaker 6: won two Super Bowls, like Joe Flakil got to a
- 52:58Speaker 6: super Bowl and won a Super Bowl. Everyone thinks they
- 53:01Speaker 6: can get away with having a bad quarterback. But I
- 53:02Speaker 6: feel like Chris kind of nail it there that we
- 53:04Speaker 6: ventured this stage of it feels like it's impossible now
- 53:08Speaker 6: unless you have just one of the best teams ever
- 53:10Speaker 6: put together where it used to be you can kind
- 53:12Speaker 6: of hide the bad quarterback.
- 53:14Speaker 3: Now to me, it's there's no hiding it.
- 53:16Speaker 6: Like if he's not a great athlete, if he's not
- 53:18Speaker 6: a great passer, defense, are gonna figure out they're gonna
- 53:21Speaker 6: take away whatever you're good at, They're gonna take it
- 53:23Speaker 6: away and make you look like where we just talking
- 53:25Speaker 6: about a blow bottom twenty five quarterback. So yeah, it's
- 53:29Speaker 6: interesting hearing your view on it, and I just think
- 53:31Speaker 6: that we're just in a weird stage of we had
- 53:33Speaker 6: a dead period there.
- 53:34Speaker 3: We had these lost years where we.
- 53:36Speaker 6: Didn't have any quarterbacks really coming out because there was
- 53:38Speaker 6: a transition of that pocket passer to being mobile athlete.
- 53:43Speaker 3: Like it's you look at the.
- 53:45Speaker 6: Position now, Josh Allen. If you dropped him back, I mean,
- 53:49Speaker 6: think how crazy we were about Mike Vick. You drop
- 53:51Speaker 6: Josh Allen back to that time period, Holy shit, people's
- 53:55Speaker 6: heads would be exploding. It's like, wait, this six or
- 53:57Speaker 6: five white dude to weighs two fifty can bulldoze a
- 54:00Speaker 6: linebacker and in the same move ship like shift off
- 54:03Speaker 6: the cornerback and throw a deep ball.
- 54:05Speaker 3: It's it's just crazy how much it's just grown the
- 54:07Speaker 3: last twenty years.
- 54:08Speaker 6: Like especially going back and watching film from two thousand
- 54:10Speaker 6: and five, it just feels like a totally different sport.
- 54:12Speaker 6: I don't if you have to SAand view Chris, but
- 54:14Speaker 6: to me, it's just we're in different worlds now.
- 54:16Speaker 7: Yeah, it isn't one thing that I was thinking of
- 54:19Speaker 7: as well. What you were I say, before Chad jumps in,
- 54:22Speaker 7: I wonder if this overreaching and like taking some of
- 54:28Speaker 7: these quarterbacks too high in the draft and guys just
- 54:31Speaker 7: absolutely flopping, Like whether it be a mac Jones or
- 54:35Speaker 7: a Zach Wilson or a Fields or a.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Who meant name the quarter you can go down.
- 54:41Speaker 7: The list is endless of guys that wind up going
- 54:44Speaker 7: in the top ten, top twelve that absolutely flopped.
- 54:48Speaker 2: And I wonder if that's maybe part of it as well,
- 54:50Speaker 2: where like teams take.
- 54:52Speaker 7: These guys who really shouldn't go this high and they
- 54:56Speaker 7: predictably fail, Like do we just have this negative.
- 54:59Speaker 2: Kind of he stinks? He stinks, he stinks? Oh yeah,
- 55:02Speaker 2: would they want him? He stinks?
- 55:04Speaker 7: So it's like, I wonder if it's kind of like
- 55:05Speaker 7: this self fulfilling prophecy on our end to just kind
- 55:08Speaker 7: of be negative.
- 55:10Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Nice This is all contextual. There are no absolutes here.
- 55:16Speaker 1: There are always going to be bad quarterbacks. There are
- 55:19Speaker 1: always going to be great quarterbacks. There are always going
- 55:21Speaker 1: to be quarterbacks who come out of nowhere and surprise
- 55:24Speaker 1: you to become great quarterbacks. And there's always going to
- 55:26Speaker 1: be quarterbacks taking the top of.
- 55:28Speaker 4: The draft who absolutely.
- 55:30Speaker 1: Flail and we're like this, dude sucks. I will say
- 55:34Speaker 1: this about Tom Brady. You don't become Tom Brady because
- 55:40Speaker 1: you don't adjust and what Tom Brady did, and I
- 55:43Speaker 1: think what a lot of quarterbacks don't do. They don't
- 55:47Speaker 1: spend the time to self scout. They don't spend the
- 55:50Speaker 1: time to be intellectually honest. You cannot succeed in anything
- 55:55Speaker 1: unless you are intellectually honest about what's in front of you,
- 55:59Speaker 1: whether it's what your tape says, what your numbers say, etc.
- 56:04Speaker 1: So you can actively improve for any better Simon, what
- 56:08Speaker 1: are we spending this whole offseason doing self scouting? Trying
- 56:12Speaker 1: to figure out where do things go right? Where do
- 56:14Speaker 1: things go wrong in the twenty twenty five season. Do
- 56:18Speaker 1: we need to make adjustments because of previous rules changes?
- 56:20Speaker 1: How do new rules changes impact what we might want
- 56:23Speaker 1: to be doing. Our favorites going to regress to where
- 56:26Speaker 1: they were before. Tom Brady was a master of self scouting.
- 56:30Speaker 1: Bill Belichick was a master of self scouting. That is
- 56:33Speaker 1: a gift that so many teams and so many coaches
- 56:37Speaker 1: are not accepting as a part of their responsibility. They
- 56:41Speaker 1: work out thinking they need to improve their body, they
- 56:43Speaker 1: need to improve certain elements of their game, but they
- 56:45Speaker 1: don't actually work on the elements as in depth as
- 56:49Speaker 1: they need to. They can actually make them better because
- 56:52Speaker 1: they were terrible at it. That's what Tom Brady did.
- 56:56Speaker 1: He would have adjusted. He did adjust, And I would
- 56:58Speaker 1: also argue it's not like Joe Burrow or Matthew Stafford
- 57:03Speaker 1: are the most mobile quarterback.
- 57:05Speaker 3: It is Joe Brow, Chadwick Burn, No, let me finish.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Let me finish.
- 57:09Speaker 4: They're great in the pocket.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Their mobility is defined to the space that they are
- 57:15Speaker 1: supposed to stay in and then ability to be creative
- 57:19Speaker 1: when they need to be creative within a you know,
- 57:23Speaker 1: ten yard radius in front of them, behind them, to
- 57:26Speaker 1: the left of them, to the right of them. Tom
- 57:29Speaker 1: Brady was great at that too, only he did that
- 57:30Speaker 1: within a two yard radius, right. It's just a little
- 57:33Speaker 1: bit of footwork to me, that is the difference.
- 57:36Speaker 3: Hey, he was a goat. I mean we're not taking
- 57:38Speaker 3: that way.
- 57:38Speaker 6: I'm just saying that if you took him and he
- 57:40Speaker 6: was a six round pick at that time because he
- 57:42Speaker 6: was good in the pocket. He was a good pocket passer.
- 57:44Speaker 6: No one would even throw his tape on now because
- 57:46Speaker 6: it's like you need a guy that can run outside
- 57:48Speaker 6: the pocket. Like that's what I'm trying to get to,
- 57:50Speaker 6: is that I look at the NFL now, Stafford's been
- 57:53Speaker 6: granting fathered in, right, He's of that last group like
- 57:55Speaker 6: Aaron Rodgers that passed. Aaron Rodgers was a great athlete
- 57:58Speaker 6: too when he was younger, so was Stafford. But we've
- 58:00Speaker 6: hit a point now of when I look at this
- 58:02Speaker 6: draft class, like there's no one just standing in the
- 58:04Speaker 6: pocket type of.
- 58:05Speaker 3: Guy that goes high in the draft anymore.
- 58:07Speaker 6: Like even when I go through all these previous shafts,
- 58:09Speaker 6: like we joked about Mac Jones, you know, he was
- 58:12Speaker 6: kind of a guy that was probably would have been
- 58:14Speaker 6: all right in the early two thousands. Now he's not
- 58:16Speaker 6: athletic enough, Like he's not mobile enough. He can't get
- 58:18Speaker 6: outside the pocket throwing the run.
- 58:20Speaker 3: His career is over.
- 58:21Speaker 6: And it's just I look at our list now where
- 58:23Speaker 6: all of our top ten guys we talk every year
- 58:25Speaker 6: coming in, they're all incredibly great athletes. Like it's just
- 58:29Speaker 6: the way it is where back in the day. Like
- 58:32Speaker 6: one of my favorite errors was that, you know, Peyton
- 58:35Speaker 6: Manning was a statue in the pocket. Tom Brady was
- 58:38Speaker 6: a statue in the pocket. Drew Brees was a statue
- 58:40Speaker 6: in the pocket. It was like, these guys were so
- 58:42Speaker 6: grifted mentally. They didn't need to run and scramble right,
- 58:45Speaker 6: they knew exactly where the defenders going to be. And
- 58:48Speaker 6: I think what we're talking a little bit about here
- 58:50Speaker 6: is that you need that smarts in the pocket. You
- 58:53Speaker 6: need the athleticism now, and that to me has been
- 58:55Speaker 6: the biggest shift of you know, people bitch every day,
- 58:57Speaker 6: they're like, oh, we don't have the five thousand yard
- 58:59Speaker 6: pass and in the sixty touchdowns. It's like that was
- 59:02Speaker 6: the one year anomaly we saw. That's never gonna happen again.
- 59:05Speaker 6: Like those are the forest outliers. Ever, it's just a
- 59:08Speaker 6: new age of you know, these guys are gonna throw
- 59:10Speaker 6: for maybe four thousand yards, but like Josh Allen, you'll
- 59:13Speaker 6: see maybe a thousand yards Russian and him rushed for
- 59:16Speaker 6: fifteen freaking touchdowns. It's like it's just so different now
- 59:19Speaker 6: that you know, we try to compare it to the
- 59:21Speaker 6: old age, and I just look at it. It's like
- 59:23Speaker 6: we've evolved. We've evolved so quickly that these new kids
- 59:26Speaker 6: coming in, Like we just talked about you know, Bo
- 59:28Speaker 6: Nicks and what world is here? First round pick? But
- 59:31Speaker 6: the new NFL he is now right and it worked.
- 59:34Speaker 6: Like Matt Mitchell was losing his fucking mind about it.
- 59:37Speaker 6: And it's like, you know, because he saw him in
- 59:39Speaker 6: college for what five six years, and now he comes
- 59:42Speaker 6: in and it works out. So it's just crazy got
- 59:44Speaker 6: shifted now where the studs in college who are just
- 59:47Speaker 6: dropped back passers, they just don't make it to the
- 59:50Speaker 6: league like they used to. You have to be able
- 59:51Speaker 6: to move in the pocket and scramble outside the bucket.
- 59:53Speaker 6: So that was just why I want to push on,
- 59:55Speaker 6: was just that, you know, I get where Chris is
- 59:57Speaker 6: coming from. But like you just said, Chad, there's always
- 59:59Speaker 6: just been dog shit from that twenty five to thirty two.
- 1:00:02Speaker 6: It's just always been that way.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: So I mean you said the magic two words. They're
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: draft props.
- 1:00:06Speaker 7: If you guys seen anything out like it's in Connecticut.
- 1:00:10Speaker 7: I mean, we can't play them on DraftKings and FanDuel
- 1:00:14Speaker 7: or whoever else, but like do they exist anywhere? Like
- 1:00:17Speaker 7: I know there's potswheyo, who will be at the number
- 1:00:19Speaker 7: one pick? Yeah, who wants to Yeah cam Ward minus sixteen.
- 1:00:23Speaker 7: But like in terms of like the second quarterback is
- 1:00:25Speaker 7: going to be number of quarterbacks in the in the
- 1:00:28Speaker 7: first round, like like stuff like that.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Does this exist anywhere outside of the little bubble that
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: I'm in in the state of Connecticut.
- 1:00:35Speaker 6: So the book makers I've talked to Bart, they got
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: crushed so bad these last three years in the draft
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: who they didn't want to put it out until maybe
- 1:00:44Speaker 6: two weeks beforehand, maybe even a week beforehand, just because
- 1:00:48Speaker 6: it's not worth it for him, Like they just they
- 1:00:50Speaker 6: can't beat the rumor mill, right, They're just behind on
- 1:00:52Speaker 6: the info.
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: So I'm with you.
- 1:00:54Speaker 6: It's been really interesting where I remember even last year
- 1:00:57Speaker 6: I was able to get bets down after the combine
- 1:01:00Speaker 6: on the draft. Yeah, on things like that, and now yeah,
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: I think the book makers know that they can't leave
- 1:01:05Speaker 6: themselves open to it.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: So I'm with you on it's brutal. Just been waiting
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: for these propsical.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: Out Chad, wouldn't you I'm gonna I'm gonna put you
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: as the book of Chad. Why don't you want to
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: post these things get people in the door, and you
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: know what, you lose a little bit and the player wins.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: You know what, the player is gonna do.
- 1:01:24Speaker 7: Player's gonna come back, and players gonna bet that money
- 1:01:26Speaker 7: that they just won right back at your shop.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm a little surprised that they wouldn't be more aggressive,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: even for really small limits, right because you're capping it
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: at fifty bucks, you're still sort of letting people continue
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: to play and put their money into the book. But so, yeah,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: it is a little bit surprising to me. I'm actually
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: looking for at that three sixty five to see what
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: kind of draft props I can find. It's hard for
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: me to find him quickly right now.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Will tell you.
- 1:02:08Speaker 7: It's the thing I always never know if I'm looking
- 1:02:10Speaker 7: under college football, if I'm looking under NFL, right, you're secial,
- 1:02:14Speaker 7: so you're a special NFL draft tab.
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: Look, some is right.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: There were years like just go back to the the
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: Mac Jones year. Was he going to go number three?
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: Was he not going to go number three? And books
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: got crushed on that because people like Simon, you know,
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: they're connected to the league. They were hearing things and
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: all of a sudden they're putting down six figures that
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: he's not going to go number three, and that's a
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: huge risk. And I do think that the books generally
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: are looking to it's a lot of jocking. It's a
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: challenging time to be a sportsbook operator, right. Everyone is
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: trying to acquire customers, not to get into the weeds
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: of the business as efficiently they can and drive revenue
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: as high as they can because those are the expectations,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: and there are a lot of challenges, and things are
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: slower during the non football season than they are during
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: the football season. It's going to be harder to make
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: up that money on a quarterly basis for all these
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: publicly traded companies if they have to go out and
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: report they had huge losses in the NFL Draft and
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: they didn't make it up. With the beginning of Major
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: League Baseball or the March Madness or NBA just gets
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: harder and harder.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: It's so funny.
- 1:03:28Speaker 7: Simon mentioned bow Nick. I'm sitting here thinking, and I
- 1:03:31Speaker 7: always like him. I'm like, in Matt, like, what the
- 1:03:34Speaker 7: hell have we seen in bow Knicks playing six years
- 1:03:37Speaker 7: of college football that he's going to be a first
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: And I remember seeing the yes no, will bow n
- 1:03:42Speaker 7: X be a first round pick and you immediately bet
- 1:03:44Speaker 7: to know and then all the the the prices and
- 1:03:48Speaker 7: then about a week maybe before the draft last maybe
- 1:03:54Speaker 7: it's a week maybe maybe a little bit longer before,
- 1:03:57Speaker 7: Like I get a call someone who was He's like,
- 1:04:01Speaker 7: Bonix is going in the first round. I'm like, no,
- 1:04:04Speaker 7: it's like Bonix is going in the first round. I'm
- 1:04:07Speaker 7: telling you right now, Bonix is going in the first round.
- 1:04:10Speaker 7: So fortunately I was able to actually make a profit
- 1:04:14Speaker 7: because the the yes price was longer than the no
- 1:04:17Speaker 7: that I bet. But uh yeah, I was stunned.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: And you're right.
- 1:04:21Speaker 7: It's the it's the information and just being kind of
- 1:04:24Speaker 7: a privy to things that not everybody can can get
- 1:04:27Speaker 7: it can get ahead on. So uh yeah, I I'd
- 1:04:30Speaker 7: love to just for a book to just to kind
- 1:04:33Speaker 7: of put themselves out there and throw a what will
- 1:04:37Speaker 7: Jackson Dart be the second quarterback taken in the in
- 1:04:40Speaker 7: the in the in the in the NFL draft over
- 1:04:42Speaker 7: under two and a half or three and a half,
- 1:04:44Speaker 7: Because I think we're I think we're definitely gonna get
- 1:04:47Speaker 7: three and I and I wonder, like I do make
- 1:04:49Speaker 7: mcshaye talking about Tyler shuck, I could. I don't know
- 1:04:53Speaker 7: if we'll get four, but I think we're definitely going
- 1:04:55Speaker 7: to get three quarterbacks in the first round, so I'm curious.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: I'm sure it'll be over two and a half. Juice
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: to the movie is what they'll wind up posted once
