- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites the podcast from the Action Network.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I Am Chad Millman. Massive Massive Podcast Day, Massive Podcast Day.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Later on in the show You're not Gonna want to
- 0:24Speaker 1: miss It, Darren Revel did an amazing interview with Tobias
- 0:29Speaker 1: Harris or the Philadelphia seventy Sixers, who just signed a
- 0:32Speaker 1: one d eighty million dollar max contract with the seventy
- 0:36Speaker 1: six Ers last year. At this time, Tobias Harris was
- 0:39Speaker 1: offered a contract for half that money ninety million dollars,
- 0:42Speaker 1: still a lot of money, turned it down bet on Himself.
- 0:46Speaker 1: In our continuing bet on Yourself series, Revel is going
- 0:50Speaker 1: to talk to Tobias Harris and his agent, who also
- 0:52Speaker 1: happens to be his father, about what it took to
- 0:55Speaker 1: turn down ninety million and turn that into two x
- 0:58Speaker 1: the money, including a hilarious quote about the business of
- 1:04Speaker 1: being a father son agent player duo, and then the
- 1:09Speaker 1: management of that money from Tobios Harris. It's not one
- 1:12Speaker 1: you're gonna want to miss. Stick around for that, But
- 1:14Speaker 1: first up British Open Week. They're playing in Northern Ireland
- 1:18Speaker 1: at Port Rush. Whether will be a factor Tiger Woods
- 1:22Speaker 1: has been off for a month. Can Brooks kept up
- 1:26Speaker 1: be the major master. What is going to happen? Jason
- 1:29Speaker 1: Silbell knows all the answers because he is our golf
- 1:34Speaker 1: genius at the Action Network. What's going on? Buddy? What's up? Chad?
- 1:39Speaker 1: One of my favorite weeks of the year. I can't
- 1:40Speaker 1: wait for this thing to get started. How early are
- 1:42Speaker 1: you setting the alarm for it this week? So listen?
- 1:45Speaker 1: I'm up so early anyways, because you know my kids historically,
- 1:50Speaker 1: have you got enough so early that even though now
- 1:52Speaker 1: they sleep till you know, the next day, I still
- 1:54Speaker 1: get up at five thirty in the morning. That's gonna
- 1:57Speaker 1: be too late. You're like midway through the early wave
- 2:01Speaker 1: rounds already. I think I want you to up with
- 2:04Speaker 1: about three thirty five this week. I can do that.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I can do that, no problem. Everybody should listen to you.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Everyone should go download, subscribe, rate, and review the Action
- 2:13Speaker 1: Network podcast. Not that I want to drive people away
- 2:15Speaker 1: from ours, but I do want them to listen to
- 2:17Speaker 1: what you Andrew staus Ak Sleeves and Peter Jennings doing
- 2:21Speaker 1: the podcast. You guys are killing it and this podcast
- 2:24Speaker 1: is doing gangbusters right now. So everyone should go listen
- 2:27Speaker 1: to the Action Network podcast where you can get Sobel.
- 2:29Speaker 1: You can also get like Stucky and Colin Wilson in
- 2:32Speaker 1: college football. You can get Shaun Corner and Chris Raybon
- 2:35Speaker 1: and Matthew Freedman on Fantasy in the NFL. Uh, it's fantastic.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Go get it. Um boy, oh boy, we are loaded
- 2:43Speaker 1: for bear. Why do you like this week so much? Sobel?
- 2:45Speaker 1: What's so special about the British Open? Man, how long
- 2:50Speaker 1: do we have? Uh, It's just a different kind of
- 2:52Speaker 1: golf than we see, at least from the PGA Tour
- 2:56Speaker 1: sense of things, any other week of the year. I mean,
- 2:58Speaker 1: if you're watching New York and were golf to wake
- 3:00Speaker 1: up early on the weekends, okay, the Irish Open two
- 3:04Speaker 1: weeks ago and the Scottish o them. But for the
- 3:07Speaker 1: majority of the golf fans in the US who are
- 3:09Speaker 1: paying attention to n PG eights, who were golf that
- 3:14Speaker 1: we see these lush parkland courses with big greens and
- 3:20Speaker 1: uh and they're they're very green and uh and building
- 3:24Speaker 1: here we go over its links golf. It's a different
- 3:27Speaker 1: type of golf. It just it feels different, it looks different,
- 3:30Speaker 1: it plays differently. Uh. Like I said, I love it.
- 3:34Speaker 1: And I love the fact that you know, I always
- 3:36Speaker 1: got to ask this question, what what major is the best?
- 3:39Speaker 1: What what's the real way that a major should play?
- 3:41Speaker 1: Should be twenty under like a like an Open Championship
- 3:45Speaker 1: where the windstopball and shouldn't be even part like you
- 3:48Speaker 1: so open fight, I said, I love it because they're
- 3:50Speaker 1: all different, and if they were all the same, fit
- 3:53Speaker 1: four major championships that were all the same, it wouldn't
- 3:56Speaker 1: be as much fun. I love the fact that the
- 3:57Speaker 1: Open Championship this week is so completely different from anything
- 4:02Speaker 1: we've seen that the Masters of the PGA or the
- 4:04Speaker 1: U s Open so far this year. Alright, so right
- 4:07Speaker 1: now on the Action Network dewnload the app. It's free.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You have multiple stories up and we're gonna get through
- 4:14Speaker 1: all of them because they all relate to betting, finding
- 4:17Speaker 1: your advantage when betting the US Open, the British Open.
- 4:20Speaker 1: The first thing you did, which is which is an
- 4:22Speaker 1: epic undertaking. You've done it for all all three other majors,
- 4:26Speaker 1: ranking all one and fifty six players in the field,
- 4:31Speaker 1: and in your introduction you right that it is getting
- 4:34Speaker 1: harder and harder to do this. Explain why I feel
- 4:41Speaker 1: like Chad ten years ago, and I've been doing this
- 4:42Speaker 1: for a long content to its mother outlets before the
- 4:45Speaker 1: Action Network. I'm very old right now, and I'm older
- 4:49Speaker 1: than Tiger Woods. That's how old I am shape right now.
- 4:53Speaker 1: So I mean, yeah, that's that's pretty old. That's how
- 4:56Speaker 1: more golf than he does that, which is good. Uh So,
- 4:58Speaker 1: it's been a long time been doing these lists. Ten
- 5:01Speaker 1: years ago, you could take the best players in the game.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I mean, what was at that point was Tiger Phil VJ.
- 5:09Speaker 1: We're Tith Gooson Adam Scott at the time still, and
- 5:13Speaker 1: you can basically take of the top ten in the world,
- 5:16Speaker 1: take eight of them, throw them on your list, put
- 5:17Speaker 1: a couple of guys. But let's say, all right, I'm
- 5:19Speaker 1: gonna do pretty well. You know, there's okay, you know,
- 5:23Speaker 1: there's maybe some guy who played a little bit better
- 5:25Speaker 1: at some events, and there's gonna be some sleepers. But
- 5:27Speaker 1: for the most part, it was easier back then. I
- 5:31Speaker 1: feel like it's so tough now because I can get down.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I can get to the forty five guy on my
- 5:37Speaker 1: list and look at it and say, you know, I
- 5:40Speaker 1: really like that guy this week, and then look at
- 5:42Speaker 1: the top forty four that are all above him and say,
- 5:45Speaker 1: I just don't like him better than those forty four guys.
- 5:48Speaker 1: So I guess he's kind of stuck in forty fifth place,
- 5:51Speaker 1: but he doesn't mean I hate the guy. And the
- 5:53Speaker 1: fact that the fields are so deep, there's so many
- 5:55Speaker 1: good players. You want to have some sleepers up there.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I want to not just list the world ranking and
- 6:02Speaker 1: just you know, recite, Hey, well this guy's number one
- 6:04Speaker 1: in the world, I'll put him number one on my list.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I want to have, you know, some sort of opinion
- 6:08Speaker 1: in there. And so you start doing this and it's
- 6:11Speaker 1: really really hard, And I'm not making excuses. I'm just
- 6:14Speaker 1: giving an explanation preemptively to at least some of the
- 6:19Speaker 1: criticism that I always get after every major championships. I
- 6:22Speaker 1: haven't been one of these right yet. I don't know how.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I'm waiting for the day I'll retire, the day I
- 6:27Speaker 1: get all hundred and fifty six right in order. Oh, well,
- 6:30Speaker 1: that would be remarkable. But do you think that that
- 6:34Speaker 1: this is the legacy of Tiger Woods more than sort
- 6:37Speaker 1: of bringing diversity to the game, but it's bringing in
- 6:40Speaker 1: superior athletes. It's part of it. I think that there's
- 6:48Speaker 1: a lot. Man, his legacy is sort of like twelve pronged.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I think that you can't overstate the cultural impact and
- 6:59Speaker 1: global impact the Tigers had on the game and Uh,
- 7:02Speaker 1: and not just bringing more people to the game, but
- 7:05Speaker 1: the people that were in the game having them, giving
- 7:08Speaker 1: him more of an interest and more of a reason
- 7:10Speaker 1: to watch, the reason to root. Um. He's polarizing so
- 7:14Speaker 1: many golfers and it just serve a complaint of mine.
- 7:17Speaker 1: I don't know how he fix it, but so many
- 7:19Speaker 1: golfers you look at them and say, yeah, that guy's cool.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I hope he plays well, and yeah, okay, he seems
- 7:25Speaker 1: like a nice guy. Yeah I'm looking for a little bit.
- 7:27Speaker 1: But there are very few golfers that the casual fans know. Man,
- 7:31Speaker 1: I love that guy. That's my guy. I gotta go
- 7:33Speaker 1: out and root for him. Tiger Woods has brought back
- 7:35Speaker 1: to the sport over the last twenty years, and that's
- 7:38Speaker 1: what makes him uh such an icon, not only in
- 7:42Speaker 1: golf but in in all of sports. And so that's
- 7:45Speaker 1: part of it. Yes, he's gotten these players to not
- 7:49Speaker 1: look like overweight, middle age guys in white shirts and
- 7:53Speaker 1: khaki's who are uh look like they were plucked from
- 7:56Speaker 1: their local country club. They have to play a little
- 7:58Speaker 1: bit better than all the other guys and play PGA
- 8:00Speaker 1: Tour and make a lot of money. These are uh,
- 8:03Speaker 1: these are athletes. You look at Books Kept and if
- 8:05Speaker 1: you didn't know he was a golfer, I would say
- 8:07Speaker 1: he played third base in the Major League somewhere. I mean,
- 8:10Speaker 1: he looks like you know that kind of guy, looks
- 8:12Speaker 1: like a Nolan Aronado kind of guy that I could
- 8:15Speaker 1: go hit forty five home runs a year for your
- 8:17Speaker 1: team if he wasn't playing golf. Look at Dustin Johnson
- 8:20Speaker 1: that he should be playing small forward somewhere. Uh, you know,
- 8:24Speaker 1: hitting about four threes a game and averaging about six rebounds.
- 8:29Speaker 1: These guys look like athletes from other sports. And yes,
- 8:32Speaker 1: Tigers had a massive impact on that. And I think
- 8:35Speaker 1: moving forward, when we talk about the future of the
- 8:38Speaker 1: game ten fifteen years from now, it's gonna be like
- 8:41Speaker 1: Books Kept In, Dustin Johnson of the norm, and then
- 8:44Speaker 1: they're gonna be guys who are legitimately would have been
- 8:47Speaker 1: a linebacker in the NFL except I had a couple
- 8:50Speaker 1: of concussions or didn't wanna go through the physical Uh,
- 8:54Speaker 1: drama of being a football player and took up golf instead.
- 8:57Speaker 1: And the guys are at three hundred eighty yards off
- 8:59Speaker 1: the see every time, and uh, that's the direction of
- 9:02Speaker 1: the game is moving. A lot of that can be
- 9:04Speaker 1: traced to Tiger. Do you think I agree? By the way,
- 9:08Speaker 1: and you, I was thinking about when you were before
- 9:12Speaker 1: you started talking about like, you know, middle age overweight dudes.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I was thinking, nowadays you got to think about what
- 9:20Speaker 1: Justin Thomas looks like and compare it to Colin Montgomery
- 9:27Speaker 1: in a sense. Yeah, I mean there are very few
- 9:29Speaker 1: Colin Montgomery types anymore. I mean, even if you're hey, okay,
- 9:33Speaker 1: I'm not brooks kept, I at least have to be
- 9:35Speaker 1: Justin Thomas at least have to be Jordan's beech. I
- 9:38Speaker 1: have to be h average to what the rest of
- 9:43Speaker 1: the professional golfers are and above average sort of physicality,
- 9:48Speaker 1: uh for the average guy out there, if that makes sense.
- 9:51Speaker 1: You know, you you look at Jordan's speech on TV,
- 9:53Speaker 1: so okay, you know he's got sort of a dad body.
- 9:57Speaker 1: You know, he doesn't look like he's in great shape.
- 9:59Speaker 1: He standlex to Jordan's He's in a lot better shape
- 10:02Speaker 1: than I am. He's a lot better shape than most
- 10:04Speaker 1: other average guys walking around playing golf with their club.
- 10:07Speaker 1: So I mean, these guys are in shape. Even the
- 10:09Speaker 1: guys shore and like ripped and looked like they should
- 10:12Speaker 1: be playing another sport, They're still in really good physical shape.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I also wonder, and this brings it back a little
- 10:20Speaker 1: bit to gambling, which is it feels like there's been
- 10:24Speaker 1: some kind of generational shift with golf in that it
- 10:28Speaker 1: transitioned from being a country club sport that was played
- 10:33Speaker 1: by people who were sort of above the fray and
- 10:37Speaker 1: if they were gambling on the match or they were
- 10:40Speaker 1: gambling with each other, it was all sort of it
- 10:44Speaker 1: felt like you know Ted Nite, the judge from Caddyshack, right,
- 10:50Speaker 1: And now it feels like it's a little bit like Broish.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Remember where I said about those twelve prongs of Tiger
- 11:00Speaker 1: is uh impact on the game? That that's another one
- 11:02Speaker 1: right there. I mean Tiger when he was growing up
- 11:04Speaker 1: they called him rcle He's a nerd because he played
- 11:07Speaker 1: golf and he didn't play other sports. And yet Tiger
- 11:09Speaker 1: is the one that sort of made it cool. And
- 11:12Speaker 1: now guy, you know, I I see kids in my
- 11:13Speaker 1: club all the time they're in. My place is littered
- 11:17Speaker 1: with more twelve and thirteen year olds than there are
- 11:21Speaker 1: fifty five year olds. I'm serious daily basis there are
- 11:25Speaker 1: more young kids they're playing golf and working on their games,
- 11:28Speaker 1: then there are old retired guys, are guys who work
- 11:32Speaker 1: part time and wanted to still play golf all time. Um,
- 11:35Speaker 1: and that is maybe I direct impact of Tiger. But yeah,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and and what we've seen on the PGA tour levels
- 11:42Speaker 1: that these kids basically become amateur professionals at a very
- 11:46Speaker 1: early age. Chat. I don't know if you were watching
- 11:48Speaker 1: the three m Open. I was actually out there a
- 11:50Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago in Minnesota for the weekend. Matthew Wolfe,
- 11:53Speaker 1: a month out of college, turn of professional and won
- 11:56Speaker 1: the three I'm opened with an eagle off the green
- 12:00Speaker 1: on the final hole to win by one, and the
- 12:03Speaker 1: guy in second place was Colin Morricala, who's twenty two
- 12:05Speaker 1: years old. Wolf is twenty. And these guys come out
- 12:08Speaker 1: ready to win now. And it's because at a very
- 12:11Speaker 1: young age they are learning how to be sort of
- 12:14Speaker 1: professional golfers. I don't know that that was happening in
- 12:17Speaker 1: generation ago. Generation to go, even if you're a ten
- 12:20Speaker 1: year old kid who liked to play golf. You're down
- 12:22Speaker 1: to the club and you you work on your game,
- 12:24Speaker 1: you play. Now it's hey, I'm ten years old, so
- 12:26Speaker 1: I'm traveling from state to state to state, playing in
- 12:29Speaker 1: tournaments and basically being a professional golfer without getting paid
- 12:33Speaker 1: for it. And now what's happening is these kids are
- 12:35Speaker 1: graduating to the highest level playing on the PGA Tour,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and they're ready to go win right away because it's
- 12:42Speaker 1: honestly no different than what they've been doing. It's just
- 12:44Speaker 1: against older guys and different people. Yeah, you're You're totally right.
- 12:49Speaker 1: But I do think there's one element here, which is
- 12:52Speaker 1: gambling has become a much bigger component of the way
- 12:57Speaker 1: casual golfers talk about the sport and elevated sort of
- 13:01Speaker 1: I think the interest level for a lot of people
- 13:03Speaker 1: who are in that same generation of sort of the
- 13:05Speaker 1: Matthew Wolf generation through the Justin Thomas, Jason Day, Jordan's
- 13:10Speaker 1: speece Like, these guys talk about gambling like and they
- 13:14Speaker 1: like to gamble. And I'm not saying these guys specifically,
- 13:17Speaker 1: but like this generation of players and fans, gambling is
- 13:22Speaker 1: core to their experience in golf, yes, and it is
- 13:26Speaker 1: growing up. I think it's less for the guys at
- 13:28Speaker 1: the top level of the pH A Tour, just because
- 13:31Speaker 1: what are you playing for? You know, if Jordan's Speece
- 13:33Speaker 1: and Justin Thomas say hey, let's go have a little
- 13:36Speaker 1: match on Tuesday for a practice round before the Open,
- 13:40Speaker 1: what are they playing for you? It's going to get
- 13:42Speaker 1: them nervous. Not I mean, there's there's not a whole
- 13:44Speaker 1: lot they can do. Phil Miicholson used to have a
- 13:46Speaker 1: Tuesday game out on tour where uh it was a
- 13:49Speaker 1: two thousand dollar match with a one time thousand dollar
- 13:53Speaker 1: press and Phil's words rose, uh, it's it's enough to
- 13:58Speaker 1: make you nervous, but not enough to make you uncomfortable,
- 14:01Speaker 1: and or or the other way around. Enough to make
- 14:03Speaker 1: you uncomfortable, not enough to making nervous tickets. I guess
- 14:05Speaker 1: that's why I kind of messed up the first time.
- 14:07Speaker 1: But in any case, it's not you know, they're they're betting. Okay,
- 14:10Speaker 1: let's puts a lot of money for you and I.
- 14:11Speaker 1: But that's not really a lot of money for these guys.
- 14:14Speaker 1: And what I see is like the levels just below,
- 14:17Speaker 1: I play with a lot of guys who are quote
- 14:19Speaker 1: unquote professional golfers. Now you don't know their names. They
- 14:22Speaker 1: don't play on the PGA Tour, they're not playing around
- 14:24Speaker 1: the world in private jets, but they are professional golfers.
- 14:27Speaker 1: They play on mini tours. Uh, they try to get
- 14:29Speaker 1: in qualifiers around the world. Those are the guys who
- 14:32Speaker 1: to them, betting on the game is uh, it's not
- 14:36Speaker 1: only funny, it's essential. I mean, this is their livelihood.
- 14:39Speaker 1: And if they can go out to a club and say, hey,
- 14:41Speaker 1: I'm gonna get fifty bucks on this, Uh, they've got
- 14:44Speaker 1: dinner for the next couple of nights because they can
- 14:46Speaker 1: go out and win the bet. And I think that
- 14:49Speaker 1: that is also getting into now, not just betting on yourself,
- 14:52Speaker 1: not just betting on you against other players and you
- 14:56Speaker 1: playing the game. It's hey, let's go bet on the Open,
- 14:59Speaker 1: let's go head on golf every week. Let's extend that
- 15:03Speaker 1: to every part of the game as both a competitor
- 15:07Speaker 1: and a viewer and a fan. And I just think
- 15:11Speaker 1: it's become so good for the game, so big for
- 15:13Speaker 1: the game to get more people involved that way. I
- 15:16Speaker 1: see it every day on so many different levels that
- 15:20Speaker 1: UM draws more people in and more people are interested in,
- 15:24Speaker 1: uh in what's going on on the PGA Tour. And
- 15:26Speaker 1: I think a lot of that stems from uh knowing
- 15:29Speaker 1: that you could bet on yourself when you're playing your
- 15:30Speaker 1: own game, and so, okay, well now I'm gonna go
- 15:32Speaker 1: bet on Dustin Johnson or books Kept or whoever it
- 15:35Speaker 1: might be. Speaking of betting on yourself, don't forget to
- 15:37Speaker 1: stick around, because we got Darren Ravel talking to to
- 15:40Speaker 1: Bias Harris and the Philadelphia semi sixers who bettered himself
- 15:43Speaker 1: doubled the offer he was going to get double the
- 15:46Speaker 1: offer he got from ninety million to eight million over
- 15:50Speaker 1: the course of twelve months. Uh, what it's like to
- 15:52Speaker 1: bet on yourself. I think a great story that we
- 15:55Speaker 1: need to think about for when the major season is
- 15:58Speaker 1: over and we get on a golf season. Is the
- 16:02Speaker 1: way these guys hustle on the golf course. You know
- 16:04Speaker 1: Drew's Drew Stilts like Sleeves who you host the Action
- 16:07Speaker 1: Network podcast. Probably one of the most popular guys in
- 16:10Speaker 1: professional golf played in the Web Tour, um web dot
- 16:13Speaker 1: Com tour. You know now is a regular Whisper Rock
- 16:17Speaker 1: in Arizona knows all the pros. All the pros play
- 16:19Speaker 1: out there. Um, he is probably amazing at betting on
- 16:24Speaker 1: like these practice rounds between tournaments, you know, rounds during
- 16:29Speaker 1: the offseason, that kind of thing. But the idea of
- 16:32Speaker 1: these guys who have to hustle from tour to tour,
- 16:35Speaker 1: who are not the pro golfers that everyone knows, and
- 16:38Speaker 1: where fifty bucks means a lot because they're not paying
- 16:40Speaker 1: for dinner. Uh, that's an interesting story, hustling professional golf hustlers.
- 16:47Speaker 1: It's not as prevalent as it used to be. I
- 16:49Speaker 1: mean I used to hear stories of guys do everything
- 16:51Speaker 1: from uh, you know, I'll play with five clubs in
- 16:54Speaker 1: my bag, you have your full bag, or I'll take
- 16:56Speaker 1: my putter out of the bag and will play for
- 16:58Speaker 1: even money. I mean things like that that back in
- 17:01Speaker 1: the olden day is twenty thirty years ago. I think
- 17:03Speaker 1: we've a lot more prevalent than it is now. I
- 17:06Speaker 1: don't hear quite as much about that now. Guys are
- 17:08Speaker 1: obviously still playing for money, But I wish that there
- 17:11Speaker 1: are better stories out there, just crazy stuff happening on
- 17:15Speaker 1: the golf course. You know, guys, guys making these outlandish
- 17:19Speaker 1: bets and having different handicaps on't me just being like, hey,
- 17:22Speaker 1: I'm in eight in your two, so I'm getting three aside.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I mean like handicaps of I'm gonna play with three clubs,
- 17:27Speaker 1: or I'm going to uh hit one ball lefty on
- 17:31Speaker 1: every single hole, or I'm gonna let you yell in
- 17:34Speaker 1: my back swing one time per nine, and that's sort
- 17:37Speaker 1: of the handicap thing we're working with. Uh, those are
- 17:40Speaker 1: the fun stories to me, I mean, and I'm not
- 17:42Speaker 1: sure Chad, they're still happening out there all the time.
- 17:45Speaker 1: I think that that was something I used to hear
- 17:46Speaker 1: about more a long time ago, and now it's more
- 17:49Speaker 1: kind of just straight up golf and different golf games.
- 17:52Speaker 1: I think a lot of people are playing, you know,
- 17:54Speaker 1: whether it's hey, we're gonna play a best ball, We're
- 17:56Speaker 1: gonna play Scramble, we're gonna play a wolf game, we're
- 17:59Speaker 1: gonna play hammer, like, there are so many different games
- 18:02Speaker 1: that you can play, and I think people are doing that.
- 18:04Speaker 1: But I don't hear about like sort of the good
- 18:05Speaker 1: old days where it's hey, let's really make some handicaps here.
- 18:10Speaker 1: You know, I'm a better golfer than news, so I'm
- 18:11Speaker 1: gonna do this to limit myself and we're gonna play
- 18:14Speaker 1: even We're gonna see what happens. I think those are
- 18:16Speaker 1: the coolest stories. Screw you, Jason for rejecting my story idea.
- 18:20Speaker 1: I'm still gonna you're trying to give them more work.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I am because you're not, because you're not doing enough.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Speaking of which, in your player rankings, which we have
- 18:28Speaker 1: to get back to a hundred and fifty six players,
- 18:31Speaker 1: you've got Adam Scott number one, And like, when you're
- 18:34Speaker 1: thinking about these rankings, what makes you say Adam Scott
- 18:37Speaker 1: is number one? What goes into your formula? So I
- 18:41Speaker 1: will peel back the curtain a little bit. And what
- 18:43Speaker 1: I do when I start working on these rankings is
- 18:46Speaker 1: I put every player into one of five categories. So
- 18:50Speaker 1: it's I mean it's I don't even label them, but
- 18:52Speaker 1: I just kind of know it's it's A, B, C,
- 18:54Speaker 1: D and D. I mean, it's just okay. The a's
- 18:56Speaker 1: are the guys who I think have a chance to
- 18:58Speaker 1: win that golf tournament. Like earlier, that's more players than
- 19:01Speaker 1: it used to be. I mean I used to wind
- 19:03Speaker 1: up with seven players in the A category. Now I
- 19:05Speaker 1: might have twenty nine players in the A category, So
- 19:08Speaker 1: that's changed a lot over the last decade or so.
- 19:10Speaker 1: But the A category is guys I think can win.
- 19:13Speaker 1: The B category is a couple of sleepers, guys who
- 19:17Speaker 1: have been playing pretty well, maybe some bigger name players
- 19:19Speaker 1: I don't necessarily like as much and don't think they
- 19:22Speaker 1: can win. Guys that will make the cut and be
- 19:24Speaker 1: somewhere in the thirty and forty range and you know,
- 19:27Speaker 1: at least get a paycheck that week. City category, you know, okay,
- 19:31Speaker 1: just guys making the Cup and not great, they're gonna
- 19:33Speaker 1: miss the cut about embarrass themselves. And the E category
- 19:37Speaker 1: is uh, the older champions and uh and the guys
- 19:41Speaker 1: who really probably shouldn't even be there. They're punched above
- 19:44Speaker 1: their weight. So that's how I break them down. And
- 19:46Speaker 1: I start looking in the A category, Okay, who do
- 19:48Speaker 1: I really like? I start looking at what stats fit
- 19:51Speaker 1: the course. I start looking at a lot of it's intangible.
- 19:54Speaker 1: I look at Adam Scott and I just said, you know,
- 19:56Speaker 1: I've always thought you would win an Open. Going back
- 19:58Speaker 1: to two thousand twelve, where he bogeyed the final four
- 20:01Speaker 1: holes to lose by one to Ernie Els, I still
- 20:05Speaker 1: thought that he should win a Clara jug this this year,
- 20:09Speaker 1: He's finished in the top twenty and every single major
- 20:11Speaker 1: championship you factor in the players as well, and he's
- 20:15Speaker 1: got the best score in relation to par other than
- 20:19Speaker 1: three others. And three others are I believe, DJ Kept
- 20:22Speaker 1: and Rrie McElroy. So it's like he's right there. He's
- 20:24Speaker 1: putting better, He's putting stats are much better. And it
- 20:27Speaker 1: also just kind of comes together and you know, I
- 20:30Speaker 1: think that Adam Scott's a guy who has a great
- 20:32Speaker 1: chance of winning this championship. And um, and again it's
- 20:36Speaker 1: such a thin line. I've got Scott number one, John
- 20:39Speaker 1: Rob number two, Justin Thomas number three. Trust me, if
- 20:43Speaker 1: it happens Thomas, Rob Scott and those are the three
- 20:46Speaker 1: of the topic. The board comes Sunday evening. First of all,
- 20:49Speaker 1: I'd be very happy with that. Secondly, it wouldn't surprise
- 20:52Speaker 1: me whatsoever. I mean, it is, like I said, just
- 20:54Speaker 1: a very thin line between all these guys. So what
- 20:56Speaker 1: stats do you think are most important for the British
- 21:00Speaker 1: ball striking? I really think that ball striking first of all. Uh,
- 21:06Speaker 1: I think putting gets neutralized a little bit at an
- 21:09Speaker 1: Open championship. Look guys are gonna make some butts. They're
- 21:12Speaker 1: not gonna make a lot of No one's gonna make
- 21:13Speaker 1: a lot of bucks. Don't gonna miss a lot of bucks.
- 21:15Speaker 1: It's not a lot of three bucks that happened at
- 21:17Speaker 1: an Open championship. And so basically it's a lot of
- 21:20Speaker 1: two putting. And you want the guys. They're gonna hit
- 21:23Speaker 1: the ball closer to the hole and give themselves chances
- 21:25Speaker 1: for Birdie's Adam Scottson's got a ball. Strikers they're in
- 21:28Speaker 1: out there. Uh, he's been really strong this year. Uh.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Even even driving is going to be neutralized a business week.
- 21:35Speaker 1: I don't think we're gonna see the bigger hitters hitting
- 21:38Speaker 1: driver as much. That takes the advantage away from them
- 21:41Speaker 1: a little bit. Gylex Brooks captain or Dustin Johnson, who
- 21:45Speaker 1: are among the longest hitters out there, You take away
- 21:47Speaker 1: that advantage and say, hey, you can't hit driver this
- 21:50Speaker 1: week just because you'll hit it too far or you'll
- 21:52Speaker 1: hit it offline. Um, and that negates kind of their
- 21:56Speaker 1: ability is just a little bit. So um ball striking
- 21:59Speaker 1: number one. And then again there's some intangible so we
- 22:02Speaker 1: can't really look at the numbers. We can't look at analytics.
- 22:04Speaker 1: I try to find some like a text height of
- 22:06Speaker 1: drives and UH and and launch angles and things. I mean,
- 22:10Speaker 1: we're going like super inside baseball there, uh talking about
- 22:14Speaker 1: like little things like this. But I'm trying to find
- 22:16Speaker 1: the guys hit uh, hit a low ball and are
- 22:19Speaker 1: better in the wind, because at some point the wind
- 22:21Speaker 1: is gonna blow, and I think those guys can have
- 22:23Speaker 1: a little bit of an advantage over guys who hit
- 22:26Speaker 1: a real high ball. I looked at the numbers Bryson
- 22:28Speaker 1: d Chambeau and sit the ball higher than anybody else
- 22:31Speaker 1: on the PGA Tour this year. That's gonna work really
- 22:34Speaker 1: well the three M Open in Minnesota when the wind
- 22:36Speaker 1: isn't blowing, where he finished in second place a couple
- 22:38Speaker 1: of weeks ago. That's not gonna work at Royal Port Rush.
- 22:41Speaker 1: And for that reason, I put him pretty far down
- 22:44Speaker 1: on the list in comparison to where he ranks amongst
- 22:47Speaker 1: the world's best players. So I think that's a big
- 22:49Speaker 1: thing for me too. It's just kind of their ball flight,
- 22:52Speaker 1: how they hit the ball, as opposed to just how
- 22:55Speaker 1: well they hit the ball. All right, So you have
- 22:57Speaker 1: Adam Scott Uh, your top ring player. I also know
- 23:00Speaker 1: from another story, not that we want to give away
- 23:02Speaker 1: the story, that you have Adam Scott as your best
- 23:05Speaker 1: bet to win the tournament. Uh as sort of the
- 23:08Speaker 1: best value odds right there. I've bet on Justin Thomas
- 23:12Speaker 1: at thirty to one. UM, give me. I want to
- 23:17Speaker 1: run through some bets here. Uh, explain to me why
- 23:22Speaker 1: you like Matt Kuchar to finish in the top five.
- 23:26Speaker 1: I feel like he's having a renaissance. He is having
- 23:29Speaker 1: the strangest year of his entire career. And that's not
- 23:33Speaker 1: all bad. I mean, he's gone through all these controversies.
- 23:36Speaker 1: You know, first of the caddie payment, and he you know,
- 23:39Speaker 1: basically underpaid his caddy and it went viral and people
- 23:42Speaker 1: heard about it and you had to make amends for it,
- 23:44Speaker 1: and he wanted up paying them. And you know, people
- 23:47Speaker 1: people think that Kucher is an awful person because of
- 23:50Speaker 1: this story that got out. I've known Matt Kucher for
- 23:52Speaker 1: a long time. He's very far from an awful person.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Might not have handled that situation perfectly, but he's not
- 23:58Speaker 1: a bad guy whatsoever. Uh. Then he had, yeah, a
- 24:02Speaker 1: situation where he he didn't give up the Sergio Garcia.
- 24:06Speaker 1: The match players like some two inches away and Sergio
- 24:08Speaker 1: went and kind of raked it and didn't make it
- 24:10Speaker 1: and then couture again not his fault, but didn't really
- 24:15Speaker 1: play it the right way. He had a drop situation
- 24:17Speaker 1: the Memorial where he asked for a drop that no
- 24:19Speaker 1: other player would ask for us for ruling, didn't get it,
- 24:23Speaker 1: but still on TV for fifteen minutes talking about the situation,
- 24:27Speaker 1: and uh, he didn't look good. That's said. That's all
- 24:29Speaker 1: the bad stuff. All the good stuff is he's probably
- 24:32Speaker 1: having the best year of his career. He's got a
- 24:34Speaker 1: couple of wins already this season. Uh, he's I believe,
- 24:37Speaker 1: number one on the FedEx Cup points list right now. Uh.
- 24:41Speaker 1: So he's playing really really good golf. He's played really
- 24:44Speaker 1: well the Open last couple of years. Remember his second
- 24:47Speaker 1: to Jordan's two years ago at Birkdale. He came in
- 24:51Speaker 1: ninth last year at car Newski. So he understands how
- 24:54Speaker 1: to play these types of golf courses. So I like
- 24:57Speaker 1: matc future a lot long long with he answered, say
- 25:00Speaker 1: I like him the other the other bet that's interesting
- 25:03Speaker 1: to me, and it relates to a story that you
- 25:06Speaker 1: wrote that I want to get to brooks Kepka versus
- 25:10Speaker 1: Dustin Johnson. You mentioned both of them sort of in
- 25:13Speaker 1: the middle of our podcast earlier today. Who do you
- 25:16Speaker 1: like in that matchup? I like brooks Kepa and it's
- 25:21Speaker 1: mostly based on what we've seen from him in major championships.
- 25:24Speaker 1: This guy is impervious to momentum and he doesn't need
- 25:29Speaker 1: to sort of trend in the right direction before he
- 25:31Speaker 1: gets to the major. In fact, when I was England,
- 25:34Speaker 1: so the few weeks ago, I spoke with him. I said,
- 25:36Speaker 1: you know, why do you like to play the week
- 25:38Speaker 1: before major championship? I was worked on this piece of
- 25:41Speaker 1: players either playing the week before or choosing to rest
- 25:44Speaker 1: and prep the week before. He actually prepped for this one.
- 25:47Speaker 1: He didn't play the week before, but usually he likes
- 25:49Speaker 1: to play. In In all four instances where he's won
- 25:52Speaker 1: major in the last few years, he has played the
- 25:54Speaker 1: week before. He said, look, you guys don't get it
- 25:57Speaker 1: like you guys hear me say, like, I go home
- 25:58Speaker 1: and I don't really practice, but you think like I'm
- 26:00Speaker 1: actually just practicing a little bit. He goes, when I
- 26:02Speaker 1: go home, I don't play golf. I'm telling like I
- 26:06Speaker 1: don't take my clubs out of the travel bag when
- 26:09Speaker 1: I go home, And so I like playing the week
- 26:12Speaker 1: before a major because it actually makes me that's my practice,
- 26:15Speaker 1: is playing some tournament the week before, because if I'm
- 26:18Speaker 1: not doing that, I'm not playing any golf whatsoever. And
- 26:21Speaker 1: the fact that he's first of all too honest about
- 26:23Speaker 1: a chad. Secondly, that you will go out there and
- 26:27Speaker 1: basically just practiced by playing a tournament for a week
- 26:29Speaker 1: and then get to the major and played better than
- 26:31Speaker 1: just about everybody else is remarkable to me. And I
- 26:35Speaker 1: know you want to get to the other part of this,
- 26:36Speaker 1: but you got a secret weapon, uh right next to
- 26:39Speaker 1: him all week this week as well. But before we
- 26:42Speaker 1: get to that, before we get to this secret weapon,
- 26:44Speaker 1: which is an amazing story, Um, it's also amazing to like,
- 26:49Speaker 1: do you think he would be that much better if
- 26:51Speaker 1: he was practicing? No, I just don't think it's in
- 26:55Speaker 1: his makeup whatsoever. And by the same token, I think
- 26:59Speaker 1: the other play airs who would be so frustrated trying
- 27:04Speaker 1: to live life like brooks Kepta. I made this joke
- 27:06Speaker 1: on Twitter. I believe it was a third round at
- 27:10Speaker 1: the p g A Championship where Kepta and Jordan's Speef
- 27:14Speaker 1: were paired together, and Jordan's Spiece I've always thought, is
- 27:17Speaker 1: the type of guy that wakes up at three o'clock
- 27:19Speaker 1: in the morning, walks into the bathroom and like checks
- 27:22Speaker 1: like looks at his swing in the mirror and like
- 27:24Speaker 1: looks at his grip and tries to figure out, like
- 27:26Speaker 1: what he's doing wrong, uh, and just drives himself nuts
- 27:30Speaker 1: based on how much he thinks about his game, how
- 27:32Speaker 1: much he worked on his game, if he tried to
- 27:35Speaker 1: do what Kepta does, he would never be able to
- 27:38Speaker 1: play golf. It just it wouldn't work for him. He
- 27:40Speaker 1: needs to be all in a hundred percent of the
- 27:42Speaker 1: time thinking about his game, working on his game. If Kepta,
- 27:45Speaker 1: by the same token, tried to do what Jordan's Speef
- 27:48Speaker 1: does and thought and worked on his game all the time,
- 27:52Speaker 1: he just he'd wear out. It's just not in his makeup.
- 27:55Speaker 1: He just wants to go out there and hit the ball,
- 27:57Speaker 1: and it works really well for him. I just don't
- 28:00Speaker 1: think that if kept the works really really hard on
- 28:03Speaker 1: trying to get better and trying, I just don't think
- 28:06Speaker 1: it's it's gonna work for him. I just don't think
- 28:07Speaker 1: it's in his makeup. It's amazing how much of a
- 28:10Speaker 1: mental game that makes golf right. Yeah, totally, and I
- 28:15Speaker 1: think it. You know, I can figure. I play a
- 28:18Speaker 1: lot of golf, and you know I played, like I said,
- 28:21Speaker 1: I played with some guys who are pros, who know
- 28:23Speaker 1: the game really well. I had one of my buddies
- 28:25Speaker 1: is a pro. The other guy I said, hey, next
- 28:26Speaker 1: time hear the range, you should work on this. And
- 28:28Speaker 1: I said, I don't go to the range like I.
- 28:30Speaker 1: I literally go to the range. So I can like
- 28:32Speaker 1: seeing the buddies who are practicing and hang out there
- 28:34Speaker 1: and have a beer and talk to them while they're practicing.
- 28:37Speaker 1: I don't practice, and so I can understand kept his
- 28:40Speaker 1: mentality of I just want to go play golf and
- 28:43Speaker 1: I'll figure it out what I'm playing. But if I practice,
- 28:46Speaker 1: I'll get worse. He just won't work. And I'm the
- 28:48Speaker 1: same way. So I totally understand where he's coming from,
- 28:51Speaker 1: even if it sounds weird and most population, you know you,
- 28:54Speaker 1: When I think about brooks Kept, I think about you
- 28:56Speaker 1: in the same in the same place, an easy comparison.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Really yeah, totally, totally. Um. The one thing you're missing
- 29:06Speaker 1: this might be. What's separating you from being Brooks Kopka
- 29:09Speaker 1: is his caddy, Ricky Elliott, who you wrote about in
- 29:12Speaker 1: the Action Network an amazing story literally grew up at
- 29:17Speaker 1: Port Rush where the British is being played this week,
- 29:19Speaker 1: like not in Northern Ireland, but a quarter mile away
- 29:24Speaker 1: from the course and says he's played it a thousand times.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Kind of advantage is that it's intangible. And I don't
- 29:32Speaker 1: know how to rate this. I mean, for years we
- 29:34Speaker 1: talked about Steve Williams relation to Tiger Woods and how
- 29:38Speaker 1: much is Steve worth to Tiger Yeah, I mean monetarily,
- 29:42Speaker 1: I mean how many strokes as you're worth per round,
- 29:46Speaker 1: per tournament. I don't know any way of figuring this out.
- 29:49Speaker 1: I've always thought that certain caddies are worth more to
- 29:51Speaker 1: certain players than other caddies are. And yeah, good example
- 29:56Speaker 1: right now, Paultera stories on Web Simpson's bag. Paulta's or
- 30:00Speaker 1: on another bag isn't worth as much as he is
- 30:02Speaker 1: to Web Simpson because he is out there basically like
- 30:05Speaker 1: like it's like Web Simpson's his dog on the leash
- 30:08Speaker 1: and Paul is pulling him in every direction. It works
- 30:10Speaker 1: really well when they work as a team. I'm getting
- 30:13Speaker 1: off topic here, but Kept is not the kind of
- 30:15Speaker 1: guy who lies on Ricky as much as some other
- 30:18Speaker 1: players to. So I don't know that it's necessarily worth
- 30:22Speaker 1: X amount of strokes per four rounds of golf this week.
- 30:27Speaker 1: But all I know is it doesn't hurt. It just
- 30:30Speaker 1: doesn't hurt for him to have a guy who knows
- 30:33Speaker 1: the course really well. So I spoke with Ricky a
- 30:35Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago. He told me he's played the
- 30:37Speaker 1: course over a thousand times. He and Graham McDowell both
- 30:40Speaker 1: grew up together. Uh that old job share in the
- 30:43Speaker 1: summers where Ricky would work with the head pro in
- 30:46Speaker 1: the mornings and do whatever the pro needed him to do,
- 30:50Speaker 1: and Graham would be out there playing in practicing, and
- 30:52Speaker 1: then they'd go switch around noon and Ricky would go
- 30:55Speaker 1: out and play the course then. And Rickie said, like
- 30:57Speaker 1: I said, he's he's played it over a thousand times.
- 31:00Speaker 1: He knows the course. He's actually saying in his childhood
- 31:03Speaker 1: bedroom this week, Uh, not far from the course. So
- 31:06Speaker 1: he's got a twin bed, golf trophies around the rooms
- 31:09Speaker 1: and his parents never threw anything away, which is pretty funny. So, uh, Yeah,
- 31:14Speaker 1: if anything, maybe it helps deflect any attention that Books
- 31:18Speaker 1: is getting. And I opink Books necessarily feels the pressure
- 31:23Speaker 1: very much, especially uh at an international event, and so
- 31:26Speaker 1: if you're in the States. But if everyone's yelling hey,
- 31:28Speaker 1: go Ricky, go Ricky and says go Brooks, I think
- 31:32Speaker 1: that deflects a little bit and I can probably help
- 31:33Speaker 1: a golfer. Well, it's so interesting you make kept a
- 31:37Speaker 1: sound like he's a little bit either just machine like
- 31:42Speaker 1: or like one of these sort of I don't I
- 31:47Speaker 1: don't mean this in a pejorative way, an empty headed,
- 31:50Speaker 1: sort of natural athlete, right where it's all so easy
- 31:54Speaker 1: that he's impervious to a lot of things that would
- 31:58Speaker 1: impact golfers. But also he doesn't need the extra help
- 32:01Speaker 1: that he thinks he's going to give him a mental edge.
- 32:03Speaker 1: So what you're saying is, if there's anybody who might
- 32:07Speaker 1: not need Ricky Elliott at the British Open, it's Brooks
- 32:11Speaker 1: Kepta who just happens to have Ricky Elliott, much like
- 32:16Speaker 1: his friend Dustin Johnson. I think kept It has gotten
- 32:18Speaker 1: a reputation in the public as being, yeah, sort of
- 32:21Speaker 1: like an empty headed, you know, kind of jock frat
- 32:26Speaker 1: brow type guy who you know just goes out there
- 32:29Speaker 1: hit ball, dude, and you know it doesn't have to
- 32:31Speaker 1: worry a lot about you know, I just did it
- 32:33Speaker 1: one time and another time goes in the home the
- 32:35Speaker 1: big peel man. And the truth of matter is, I
- 32:38Speaker 1: think he works really hard to maintain that image because
- 32:42Speaker 1: he doesn't want people think of him as like this,
- 32:45Speaker 1: you know, serious thinker or anything like. I think there's
- 32:47Speaker 1: a lot more going on with the books kept then
- 32:50Speaker 1: we understand. And Chad, did you see where I put
- 32:53Speaker 1: him on my list of one to one? Did you
- 32:56Speaker 1: get all the way down there? Remind me it wasn't
- 32:58Speaker 1: It wasn't like that high up that I'm thinking, this
- 33:02Speaker 1: makes sense to me. I'm gonna barely out here. I
- 33:07Speaker 1: put him one fifty six on the list. There you go.
- 33:10Speaker 1: You know why Brooks plays with a chip on his shoulder,
- 33:16Speaker 1: and he has admitted that sometimes he manufactures that chip.
- 33:19Speaker 1: You know, sometimes his name might be spelled wrong somewhere.
- 33:23Speaker 1: He throws his hands up and this man, I'm getting disrespected.
- 33:27Speaker 1: And he used that used as fuel and motivation to
- 33:29Speaker 1: go out and play better golf. And so I put
- 33:32Speaker 1: him one fifty six on my list and said, here's
- 33:34Speaker 1: the strategy. Let's all bet Brooks kept. Now let's hope
- 33:38Speaker 1: this gets back to him. He hears that someone placed
- 33:41Speaker 1: him dead last in a ranking of the entire field
- 33:44Speaker 1: for the Open Championship. And now let's see him go
- 33:48Speaker 1: from Bruce Banner to the Hulk, get really mad, go
- 33:51Speaker 1: out and win this championship, and then we all win
- 33:54Speaker 1: after having motivated him to go play better. How's that
- 33:58Speaker 1: for a plan? I like it. I like the way
- 34:01Speaker 1: you're assuming your influence is going to go worldwide, and
- 34:03Speaker 1: I appreciate that kind of hubris. We need that at
- 34:06Speaker 1: the Action Network. I'm not sure it has yet. I
- 34:09Speaker 1: was really trying to go to one of my fellow
- 34:12Speaker 1: reporters into asking him about the press conference. I thought
- 34:15Speaker 1: that would be a great kept good question. As he's
- 34:18Speaker 1: preparing himself for the tournament. Some guy raised his hand,
- 34:21Speaker 1: takes the microphone and says, Brooksie, though you were ranked
- 34:25Speaker 1: a hundred and fifty six on one list of the
- 34:27Speaker 1: entire field and books you know, just like slam his
- 34:30Speaker 1: fist down on the table. Go you guys, don't respect me,
- 34:33Speaker 1: and like walk off and go out and win by
- 34:35Speaker 1: twelve and like, you know, mission accomplished. We figured everything
- 34:39Speaker 1: out that we need to figure out. That's exactly what
- 34:41Speaker 1: we're trying to get him to do. But that hasn't
- 34:43Speaker 1: happened yet. Hopefully it will. Well, you never know, You
- 34:48Speaker 1: just never know. Sobel, all right, Jason, Sobel the Action
- 34:52Speaker 1: Network Action Network Podcast. Go, Go sign up, Go subscribe,
- 34:56Speaker 1: go rate, go review, by the way, subscribe, rate and
- 34:59Speaker 1: review this podcast as well. Here's what I can recap
- 35:03Speaker 1: for us, Jason. You like Adam Scott, I like Justin Thomas.
- 35:08Speaker 1: You like Matt Coucher in Top five. You're like Brooke
- 35:11Speaker 1: cap Brooks kept even though you have him ranked one
- 35:13Speaker 1: fifty six and your players of one. You like him
- 35:16Speaker 1: in a match up against Dustin Johnson. I like you
- 35:20Speaker 1: to cover the British Open with Flair for the Action Network.
- 35:25Speaker 1: That's even money right there. We'll see what happens. You're
- 35:28Speaker 1: the best brother. Coming up next on the podcast, Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Coming up next on the podcast, Dinner Revel Tobias Harris
- 35:35Speaker 1: betting on himself and making a hundred and eighty million dollars.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Thanks Chad, and welcome back to the Favorite podcast. I'm
- 35:44Speaker 1: Darren Ravell. Tobias Harris signed a one eighty million dollar
- 35:49Speaker 1: five year deal with the seventies six ers after turning
- 35:52Speaker 1: down an eighty million dollar extension with the Clippers a
- 35:56Speaker 1: year before. And another way to bet is to bet
- 35:59Speaker 1: on yourself, and Tobias Harris certainly did that and he
- 36:01Speaker 1: came out a hundred million dollars richer. So joining us
- 36:05Speaker 1: now is Tobias Harris with the seventies six ers for
- 36:09Speaker 1: the next five years, and his father, and not just
- 36:12Speaker 1: his father, also his agent, Terrell Harris. Let's get right
- 36:16Speaker 1: to it, Tobias, when you know the Clippers offered you
- 36:19Speaker 1: an eighty million dollar extension, what made you say I'm
- 36:24Speaker 1: gonna bet on myself and let's see what's down the
- 36:27Speaker 1: road and get to the point where I'm an unrestricted
- 36:30Speaker 1: free agent? Number one. It was for me. I've been
- 36:33Speaker 1: in different situations where I have been traded and I
- 36:36Speaker 1: had just got there for probably like games or whatnot.
- 36:41Speaker 1: And on top of that, you know, me and my
- 36:43Speaker 1: father had had talked about it and he said, listen,
- 36:47Speaker 1: you know, I know next summer that I can get
- 36:50Speaker 1: you close to max deal. I've seen the way that
- 36:53Speaker 1: you've worked this summer, and for me, my confidence was
- 36:56Speaker 1: sky high in the summer and the opportunity and the
- 36:58Speaker 1: role that I was going to have on the team
- 37:00Speaker 1: with with the Clippers, who was going to be a
- 37:02Speaker 1: big one also knew my game and knew that I
- 37:06Speaker 1: wanted a five year deal. He was able to make
- 37:08Speaker 1: that decision, and you know, it definitely paid off in
- 37:10Speaker 1: the right way. But my father definitely gave me some
- 37:13Speaker 1: great confidence in knowing that there was greater out there.
- 37:16Speaker 1: And I went home, I looked at the free agent
- 37:18Speaker 1: list of guys that were gonna be free agents the
- 37:21Speaker 1: next summer, and I said, I'm gonna be one of
- 37:23Speaker 1: the best guys on that list. And I just put
- 37:25Speaker 1: there working for it. What's it like to actually make
- 37:28Speaker 1: that decision on a human level? Or you turned down
- 37:31Speaker 1: the money and then you didn't think about it again,
- 37:34Speaker 1: how did it actually work in your head? It was like,
- 37:36Speaker 1: you know when it when it first came out, you
- 37:38Speaker 1: just called eighty million dollars everybody through the internet. When
- 37:41Speaker 1: I was like, man, are you bugging? Like what you're doing?
- 37:45Speaker 1: Blah blah blah, And I was just like, man, listen.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Like when we were in Orlando, my father, we had
- 37:50Speaker 1: a deal with the Magic for an extension that was
- 37:53Speaker 1: four year, thirty two and eighty year or whatnot. And
- 37:57Speaker 1: he had said to me, listen, like same exact conversation.
- 38:01Speaker 1: I've seen the work you put in. I know the
- 38:03Speaker 1: next summer, Uh, you're being a free agent. I can
- 38:07Speaker 1: get you anywhere from thirteen up. And we ended up
- 38:10Speaker 1: doing four years sixt four. So just having that confidence
- 38:13Speaker 1: to better on yourself, it takes a lot, and I
- 38:16Speaker 1: knew that for me, Like when you bet on yourself,
- 38:18Speaker 1: you've got to be able to really devote yourself to
- 38:21Speaker 1: staying healthy and playing great basketball. So you know, those
- 38:25Speaker 1: all those things went to that decision making process. But
- 38:28Speaker 1: I had signed a big deal previous, and you know,
- 38:32Speaker 1: I knew that. Let's just say, if I really played
- 38:35Speaker 1: down to the level, you know, which I knew I
- 38:37Speaker 1: wasn't gonna do, but I knew I'd be in a
- 38:39Speaker 1: good situation with godless you know what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah, Terrell,
- 38:42Speaker 1: You've been in this business for a long time. It's
- 38:44Speaker 1: not like you're just some dad who decides to represent
- 38:48Speaker 1: his son and that's the first time you're in the business.
- 38:50Speaker 1: You've been in this business for a long time. So
- 38:53Speaker 1: how does that make things different, that it's not like
- 38:57Speaker 1: this is your first rodeo. Oh a big difference, of course.
- 39:01Speaker 1: I just want to set all praise to God, you know,
- 39:03Speaker 1: protecting Tobias from any injuries. But I've been in this
- 39:07Speaker 1: business and I look at Tobias and I didn't really
- 39:09Speaker 1: see that many players better than him in the NBA.
- 39:13Speaker 1: So when Lawrence presented me, and Lawrence knew too that, hey,
- 39:19Speaker 1: I understand you're turning it down. I know Tobias is
- 39:21Speaker 1: worked more than that, and so it was to me
- 39:24Speaker 1: it wasn't really a big deal because a couple of factors.
- 39:28Speaker 1: I see the work device puts in. I see the
- 39:31Speaker 1: dedication that he has when it comes to the game
- 39:33Speaker 1: of basketball, the preparation he goes about each and every day.
- 39:37Speaker 1: So it wasn't really a tough decision like a lot
- 39:40Speaker 1: of people. He says, how does the father's son dynamic
- 39:44Speaker 1: helper hurt? I can see on one side, well, obviously,
- 39:47Speaker 1: you know he's my father, so he might believe in
- 39:49Speaker 1: me more than you know. He might say I'm better
- 39:51Speaker 1: than I really am, or how close you are, and
- 39:55Speaker 1: you do this well, you obviously know it's not like
- 39:57Speaker 1: a typical agent player relationship where you don't know if
- 40:00Speaker 1: the agents in it for themselves. So the fact that
- 40:04Speaker 1: you are father's son, how does that make this decision
- 40:08Speaker 1: either harder or easier. Well, it's it doesn't mean it's
- 40:12Speaker 1: the respect that we have for one another. Bias has
- 40:15Speaker 1: some million I have for him as a basketball players
- 40:18Speaker 1: and what he you know he do day in and
- 40:20Speaker 1: day out. But realistically, if you look at the statistics
- 40:24Speaker 1: of tobias efficiencies in the NBA, it's off the chart.
- 40:28Speaker 1: It's one of the top players that's in the NBA.
- 40:31Speaker 1: He has in the most durable and one of the
- 40:34Speaker 1: youngest free agencies out here. So it's like when you
- 40:37Speaker 1: look at the statistics, it's all strictly fat. So it
- 40:41Speaker 1: gets the point of father and son relationship goes off.
- 40:44Speaker 1: I'll just treat him as he's one of another top
- 40:47Speaker 1: client that we all have. But I just think if
- 40:50Speaker 1: you look at tobias efficiency and the things that he
- 40:53Speaker 1: had done and always constantly getting better each and every year,
- 40:56Speaker 1: you know you knew that he's one of the top
- 40:59Speaker 1: guy in the league. Right. So data is data, statistics
- 41:03Speaker 1: or statistics. There's a reason why they call them the
- 41:06Speaker 1: human Swiss army knife. I get that, Tobias. Was there
- 41:09Speaker 1: ever a time during the season where you thought maybe
- 41:13Speaker 1: it wasn't gonna pay off? Um? No, not really. I
- 41:16Speaker 1: knew for me, at the end of the day, things
- 41:18Speaker 1: are gonna work in the place that they're supposed to
- 41:21Speaker 1: work out now for my faith and my trust and God,
- 41:23Speaker 1: knowing that every situation is to present it for me
- 41:26Speaker 1: to grow and learn and and to develop. Whatever is
- 41:29Speaker 1: to happen is gonna be what's to happen. I think
- 41:32Speaker 1: when you look at myself and my career, just the
- 41:36Speaker 1: trades and the ups and downs I've I've grown from
- 41:38Speaker 1: every trade, grown from every scenario, every situation. So I
- 41:42Speaker 1: kind of knew that it is what you make it.
- 41:44Speaker 1: You know, if if you want, you could make it
- 41:46Speaker 1: as hey, I want I just want this and that
- 41:48Speaker 1: in my career. But for me, I really wanted to win.
- 41:51Speaker 1: I know, like what you just touched on the last question,
- 41:54Speaker 1: my father and me and and the balance. You know,
- 41:56Speaker 1: sometimes I have to tell them, look, I just need
- 41:58Speaker 1: you to be dead right now instead of agent. And
- 42:02Speaker 1: we have a good dialogue with that, and we have
- 42:04Speaker 1: a good dialogue of knowing, Okay, it's time to sit
- 42:07Speaker 1: down and talk. When it's time to talk, I call him,
- 42:09Speaker 1: I say I needed to speak to Tarrelle. But when
- 42:11Speaker 1: it's time in to be father, I call him. I say,
- 42:14Speaker 1: what's up there? How you doing? So we got that
- 42:16Speaker 1: type of dialogue down. That's great, that's awesome. What were
- 42:20Speaker 1: your first thoughts when, Hey, I did get this deal?
- 42:23Speaker 1: Obviously the Sixers had your bird right, so they could
- 42:26Speaker 1: offer you one more year, they could offer you more money.
- 42:29Speaker 1: So when you got the five year, one eighty, what
- 42:31Speaker 1: was your first reaction? I was ecstatic. I was super excited.
- 42:36Speaker 1: This is what I wanted to be so I wanted
- 42:39Speaker 1: to get a deal done here. I wanted to be
- 42:41Speaker 1: in the city. I wanted to be with these guys
- 42:43Speaker 1: on the team, and um, when um it was presenting
- 42:46Speaker 1: the meeting, we were excited. And I was happy for
- 42:50Speaker 1: myself for where I've gone. And I was really happy
- 42:52Speaker 1: for my father too, because, um, you know, breaking in
- 42:55Speaker 1: being in the agency game way back and then now
- 42:59Speaker 1: coming back and get into it and being able to
- 43:01Speaker 1: do both the deals that he has done for me
- 43:04Speaker 1: just speaks by him a hard work that he put
- 43:06Speaker 1: in and and and just him as an agent and
- 43:08Speaker 1: as a father, Karen and Trusting and his son and Klient.
- 43:11Speaker 1: So I was really happy for him. Terrell, I did
- 43:14Speaker 1: a little research. Did you represent George Gurvan? So what's
- 43:19Speaker 1: your history as an agent? Well, my history goes back
- 43:22Speaker 1: thirty years. I represented George Gurvan, Cliff Robertson, Fret Flouster,
- 43:27Speaker 1: Lamette Wood, James Bains, Derek Gervin called to mckimmy. You've
- 43:33Speaker 1: been around the block here, Yeah, long time, Tobias. I
- 43:38Speaker 1: think people love stories when guys bet on themselves and
- 43:41Speaker 1: it comes out right, whether it's you or the famous
- 43:44Speaker 1: Joe Flacco story and him bringing the Ravens to the
- 43:47Speaker 1: Super Bowl in his contract year. And what would you
- 43:50Speaker 1: tell other players who potentially could make the same type
- 43:54Speaker 1: of bet on themselves? What would what would you tell
- 43:56Speaker 1: them about how to go about it? Now, you gotta
- 43:59Speaker 1: have faith in your your own self and you gotta
- 44:01Speaker 1: be smart too. You want to be able to make
- 44:04Speaker 1: a decision that could help yourself and help your family
- 44:06Speaker 1: and be able to really be in a situation where
- 44:08Speaker 1: you can excel as a player. But I would I
- 44:11Speaker 1: would just say you have to be confident. Confidence is
- 44:14Speaker 1: number one. Being confident, being smart, You gotta be able
- 44:17Speaker 1: to back up both of those things with your hard work.
- 44:20Speaker 1: And that's what I was saying. Just put yourself around
- 44:22Speaker 1: a good team and a good team that keeps it
- 44:25Speaker 1: real with you, that you know when you're doing wrong,
- 44:27Speaker 1: let you know when you doing good, and um, just
- 44:29Speaker 1: being smart and confident. Those are two of the best
- 44:31Speaker 1: things I could give a vice. What did you do
- 44:34Speaker 1: anything special this year in terms of being more careful
- 44:37Speaker 1: because of what was on the line, in terms of
- 44:40Speaker 1: either not going out in a town or do something
- 44:43Speaker 1: different because of the stakes involved. But you always got
- 44:46Speaker 1: to be sharp. And today's day, with social media and
- 44:49Speaker 1: with cell phones and with everything going on in America
- 44:53Speaker 1: in general, you gotta be smart with how you approach things.
- 44:56Speaker 1: You gotta be smart with your approach to just being
- 44:58Speaker 1: a professional. So to be honest, I didn't do anything different.
- 45:01Speaker 1: I've been doing this ever since I got in the league.
- 45:03Speaker 1: I wanted to be one of the best professionals on
- 45:05Speaker 1: and off the floor, so I just stuck to things
- 45:08Speaker 1: that when I first came to the league that I
- 45:10Speaker 1: learned from that and I learned from experience, and then
- 45:14Speaker 1: I've been just doing those exact same things and just
- 45:16Speaker 1: getting smarter along the process every year. All right, two
- 45:19Speaker 1: more questions, Terrell, how does commission work with father son relationship?
- 45:23Speaker 1: He gets one. I want to go back with the
- 45:26Speaker 1: questions to just asked him. One thing I want to
- 45:28Speaker 1: say about the lives. He played the game the right way.
- 45:31Speaker 1: When he was in the l A the Clippers, Doc
- 45:34Speaker 1: gave him the ball and he was the guy and
- 45:37Speaker 1: he was rolling. He was the first option on the
- 45:39Speaker 1: team and Doc believe in him. Then in February is
- 45:44Speaker 1: a change he had to come into just to this team.
- 45:47Speaker 1: One thing about to Bias. He steadily played his game.
- 45:50Speaker 1: He didn't go out there and say, okay, well I
- 45:52Speaker 1: was a man and the Clippers and I'm I'm on
- 45:55Speaker 1: my final year. My I'm on I'm on last year,
- 45:58Speaker 1: my contract. I gotta go out there and a numbers. No.
- 46:00Speaker 1: He just he even sacrificed himself even more. And sometimes
- 46:05Speaker 1: I was like, you know, you know, just play the
- 46:07Speaker 1: way you played the Clippers. You know, he says, you know, Dad,
- 46:09Speaker 1: I just I played the game the right way and
- 46:11Speaker 1: just the way you taught me. So I gotta play
- 46:13Speaker 1: the game the right way. And he didn't play the
- 46:15Speaker 1: game where he was worrying about a contract. He just
- 46:17Speaker 1: went out there and played the team game. He tried
- 46:19Speaker 1: to do the best he could for his team to win.
- 46:22Speaker 1: And actually he played so unselfish when he came here
- 46:27Speaker 1: to the Sixers. That's a testimony that he you know,
- 46:30Speaker 1: he has the craft of the game, played the game
- 46:32Speaker 1: the right way to win. That's how he's built. And
- 46:35Speaker 1: I'm more proud of him than that. How he's the leader.
- 46:38Speaker 1: You know, he bought trying to bring these guys together
- 46:40Speaker 1: as one and say, hey, listen, in order for us
- 46:43Speaker 1: to win, we all got to sacrifice our game. And
- 46:46Speaker 1: that's what he did. Basically, I appreciate that, but you
- 46:48Speaker 1: you still duck the commissions. That's confidential. That's confidential matter
- 46:55Speaker 1: though you know, I love you. No, he gets he
- 46:59Speaker 1: gets a vague he deserves. He knows what he deserved.
- 47:02Speaker 1: We we'll discussed that. He always shots to slide it
- 47:05Speaker 1: in on on the day. I probably get my first
- 47:07Speaker 1: pace of you trying to slide that they need that commission,
- 47:11Speaker 1: as he should. The whole thing is it's a blessing.
- 47:14Speaker 1: It's a blessing in a lot of different ways. One
- 47:16Speaker 1: main reason why Tobias did walk away the size of money.
- 47:20Speaker 1: He wanted to see a home that he fits in,
- 47:22Speaker 1: you know, because he's been traded a couple of times,
- 47:25Speaker 1: and he wanted to basically to look at an organization
- 47:29Speaker 1: with the culture was right where everybody just want to
- 47:32Speaker 1: come together as one and win the championship. And for
- 47:35Speaker 1: him at this stage in his career, he wants to
- 47:38Speaker 1: win the championship. You don't want to be on the
- 47:40Speaker 1: rebuilding teams. You want to be on guys and all
- 47:42Speaker 1: selfish trying to get their numbers. He wants to be
- 47:44Speaker 1: on teams like everybody for for each other. Elson presented
- 47:49Speaker 1: that here to him and that's what Tobias wanted and
- 47:52Speaker 1: that's why we have to make up of this team
- 47:54Speaker 1: we have right now. Last question to Bias. We know
- 47:57Speaker 1: that there's high stakes betting that goes on between players
- 48:01Speaker 1: that shoot arounds and stuff like that. You have a
- 48:03Speaker 1: favorite story, yeah, yeah. During the playoffs, me and Mike Scott,
- 48:08Speaker 1: we would you know, playoff for d M. It's some
- 48:10Speaker 1: good for dam right there. So with me and Mike
- 48:13Speaker 1: Scott would beat and we would go through a three
- 48:16Speaker 1: point shooting drill where we probably get up about seventy
- 48:20Speaker 1: threes and whoever has the best record, like throughout all
- 48:24Speaker 1: fifteen spots gets to take the other persons for d
- 48:27Speaker 1: M so for the entire playoffs of the game, for
- 48:29Speaker 1: the entire playoffs. God, oh that's some money. That's some
- 48:33Speaker 1: money right there. So I remember taking Mike Scott, so
- 48:36Speaker 1: he's gonna try to run that back this year for sure. Guys,
- 48:39Speaker 1: thanks so much. I really appreciate it. First time I've
- 48:42Speaker 1: talked to you, and I already love you guys, So congratulations,
- 48:45Speaker 1: this is an amazing story and and you deserve it all.
- 48:48Speaker 1: Thank you so much. We appreciate you. Our thanks again
- 48:52Speaker 1: to Tobias Harris and his father Terrell. What an awesome
- 48:56Speaker 1: story and we're so glad to bring it to you today.
- 48:59Speaker 1: Back to you. That was Dannil Revel went Tobias Harris.
- 49:02Speaker 1: Earlier in the show, we had Jason Sobel previewing the
