Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Cubs thoughts and concerns with PCA & Tucker, Twins Non-Sale with Nick Nelson & The Voice of the Chiefs Mitch Holthus
Transcript
- 0:11Hi good afternoon welcome Miller and Condon on a Thursdays the
- 0:16Iowa Sports Radio Network Trent Condon and Ken Miller with you
- 0:20for the next couple of hours to talk sports with you.
- 0:22Thanks for starting your afternoon with us wherever
- 0:25you're listening in the state of anywhere in the I heart app
- 0:28grateful that you are doing so here's what's coming up on our
- 0:31program this morning. We're going to head north.
- 0:34Nick Nelson covers the twins also dabbles on the in the
- 0:38Vikings. So basically, obviously the
- 0:41Twins lack of sale, that's good to see.
- 0:44The lack of sale on sale. Right will will be the focal
- 0:48point, but we'll get an update from Nick on on JJ McCarthy and
- 0:51just how terrific he's looked so far this training you.
- 0:55Have a different algorithm than I do.
- 0:57So we'll talk to Nick Nelson. We will hear on tape from our
- 1:01friend Mitch Holtis the Chiefs daily training camp report
- 1:04brought to us daily by Papa John's.
- 1:08Mitch and the crew are in the air headed to Seattle for a
- 1:11night game tomorrow night. I think the NFL Network has it.
- 1:15Although are the Chiefs local? Do you know, do they have an
- 1:18outlet? I know the I know the Vikings
- 1:19were on KCCI this past week, right?
- 1:22Because I heard Paul Allen and company, and you will hear Paul
- 1:26Allen. Well, it was channel 17 for us
- 1:28locally. That's the Fox affiliate for
- 1:30their statewide network. Because I never knew about what
- 1:33the Fox affiliate was in Des Moines until I moved here.
- 1:34But yeah, KDSM used to have the Chiefs, but I.
- 1:38Don't know. Now that you say that, I'm not
- 1:39sure. Well, if it isn't broadcast
- 1:41locally, they. It was because they bounced out
- 1:43of they bounced out of the Cubs Cardinals game to go to the
- 1:46Chiefs preseason. I'm almost positive I saw this
- 1:49on on the garbage Twitter. I I'm almost positive I saw that
- 1:53Saturday night. Well, that was supposed.
- 1:56Well, you might have. But I didn't see it personally.
- 2:00But I'm almost positive I saw somebody complaining.
- 2:02All right, because Cubs card was the Saturday night game.
- 2:05And I would guess that happened here.
- 2:07That doesn't happen in Eastern Iowa.
- 2:09I will tell you that one. Shouldn't happen in Central, I'm
- 2:11sorry. Right.
- 2:11It's a preseason game. It's a preseason game, right?
- 2:14But I'm almost positive. Somebody help us out here, hit
- 2:17us up on that garbage Twitter app and let us know one way or
- 2:20the other. So I was at Prairie and I was
- 2:22walking upstairs into the Caesars Sports book where it was
- 2:25being shown. So I guess.
- 2:28I and that might be a different. Feed that's what I'm wondering
- 2:31because I I know I watched it in between races anyways, all
- 2:35right, good stuff. So that's our number one, our
- 2:37number 2 going to be a little bit different.
- 2:39We Bama Bob is going to join Trent and I as we do each and
- 2:43every year we go on record and it's kind of a slow day.
- 2:46So why don't we do it today, tomorrow or never tomorrow?
- 2:49Next week rather gets a little crazier than it normally would
- 2:52have because after all there is a week zero with one of the
- 2:56needle movers that will be playing in those in that game.
- 3:00So we will do what we'll go on record here today with Bama Bob
- 3:05regarding whether we're our picks, the group of of Group of
- 3:10Five, the Power 4 conferences, we like the Heisman, etcetera,
- 3:13etcetera, etcetera. So we'll do that and then we'll
- 3:15have that on record and we will all periodically a couple of
- 3:19times certainly at the end we'll correct our work and maybe one
- 3:22time in between now and then. But it's always fun to do.
- 3:25Just see how bad that we can possibly be as, you know, talk
- 3:31about it. Why don't go on record and have
- 3:33an actual written record of our our picks.
- 3:37So baseball, obviously we're going to start there.
- 3:39We will get to Owen Casey being called up by the Cubs.
- 3:42I have not seen, and I keep refreshing Twitter, the Cubs
- 3:45starting lineup for today is their getaway game in Toronto
- 3:49against the Blue Jays. It's a 2O7 first pitch.
- 3:53And I keep checking Twitter and I have not seen the Cubs lineup.
- 3:57If you have, please retweet it. I keep seeing predictions, but
- 4:01that's not good enough. No one official, right?
- 4:03Everybody's got predictions, what it should be like.
- 4:05But on Casey called up Kyle Tucker in just a horrendous
- 4:09slump. I don't know if they will just
- 4:12put him on the bench and give him the day off he would they
- 4:14would DH him. Casey's a right fielder, as we
- 4:17speculated prior to the trade deadline.
- 4:19Don't be shocked if Casey doesn't move.
- 4:21This is insurance for Kyle Tucker.
- 4:24If that 500 or $450 million price tag, whatever it may be,
- 4:29just gets a little too a little too pricey, you've got a guy
- 4:34that's just absolutely tearing the cover off the ball.
- 4:36And if you follow Tommy Birch on X, as both Trent and I do, and
- 4:40he will tell you whether he's on the radio, if you've run into
- 4:42him, the grocery store, that old Casey's ready for the major
- 4:45leagues, and he gets his opportunity.
- 4:47I hope he plays. I really do.
- 4:49But we don't know what his travel schedule.
- 4:51That's just it, Trent. And I wonder that's why we're
- 4:54waiting for this. Lineup.
- 4:55It was a night game. Probably he got the word.
- 4:57When did you see it for the first time?
- 4:59Was it evening? Yesterday evening, yeah.
- 5:01So he's got to catch a flight to Chicago, 'cause you get to
- 5:05Toronto, it's. For Minneapolis.
- 5:07I guess Minneapolis, Yeah, sure. I've flown in Toronto, but did
- 5:11so through O'Hare. So assuming to travel.
- 5:14He's a Canadian, so we're going to be kind of cool to make your
- 5:17first start in the major leagues in your home country.
- 5:21If he does, great. If not, I'm guessing he'll be
- 5:23sometimes this weekend at Wrigley Field when the Pirates
- 5:26come to town and then they will leave.
- 5:28And here come the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 5:30This story trend. It's, it's almost unreal.
- 5:34It just doesn't seem right of all teams to go on a run like
- 5:37this. The Brute Crew I.
- 5:39Just got this from Zach Zabin, who's part of the Cubs radio
- 5:42broadcast. Long Timer said if Owen Casey is
- 5:45able to get to the ballpark in time, he will be in the starting
- 5:49lineup today. That's awesome.
- 5:51So is it 90 minutes before that your official lineup has?
- 5:54To be in I don't know the answer.
- 5:56I used to know what. Like it would be.
- 5:58It seems like that would be accurate.
- 5:59I think it's 90 minutes of memory so.
- 6:02Apparently he's still not in Toronto.
- 6:03Still, and he might be in Toronto, but he could be coming
- 6:05from the airport. Or, and, and here's the thing,
- 6:07it's a long way from, I think it's Pearson International.
- 6:10I think it's Pearson who was a Prime Minister of Canada, Lester
- 6:15B, for those of you at home, Lester Pearson Airport.
- 6:19And it's a long way from the and it's traffic is awful.
- 6:23It's a huge city. Yeah, Toronto's a big, big city.
- 6:26So fingers crossed get him there, pick him up and get him
- 6:29to the Rogers Center in time for Game 3 of this series with the
- 6:33Cubs evened up last night. So we'll keep an eye on that and
- 6:36we'll let you know when that comes across.
- 6:38The phone lines lit up. Yes, they did bounce out.
- 6:41They did. Now, there has to be something
- 6:43contractual, right? It's only three preseason games.
- 6:45I'm going to guess if you were an affiliate, you have to have
- 6:49all three games in their full window.
- 6:51I would anticipate that has to be something that the Chiefs
- 6:54network and the affiliates that they have to sign.
- 6:58I've been apoplectic. If you're.
- 7:00I would've been beside myself, I'd have been so pissed off.
- 7:04For a preseason, for preseason game one.
- 7:06But also think, all right, what does the local affiliate not
- 7:10just box here locally, but whatever the local affiliate,
- 7:13the Kansas City affiliate, the Saint Joe's affiliate, the Saint
- 7:16Louis affiliate? They bounce.
- 7:18They do, right? What do you get for even a
- 7:22regular season game? Cubs, Cardinals, in terms of
- 7:25what you sell compared to, certainly in this market, what
- 7:28those people are selling on the local front, in terms of
- 7:31advertising, they're making a whole lot more money with that
- 7:34Chiefs game than what they are for a regular season.
- 7:37Cubs. Cardinals.
- 7:38I, I, I don't have a push back on that, You're 100% right.
- 7:42As always, the answer to all your questions is.
- 7:45It's always, it's always about the money, and this just shows
- 7:48you how popular it is, right? The NBA playoffs average for the
- 7:53final right? Oklahoma and Indiana averaged
- 7:574.5 million viewers. All right, The Hall of Fame
- 8:00game. Yes, 6.9 the Hall of Fame game.
- 8:05It was in. July it was in July in Canton,
- 8:08OH, where nobody played 6.9 sickos.
- 8:13I was one raise your hand watch the Hall of Fame game and the
- 8:18the the viewers in the NBI mean come on.
- 8:20It's just it's just so damn popular, right?
- 8:22But your points, right, I think you, I think you nailed the
- 8:27reasoning behind it. It's the almighty dollar.
- 8:30Anyways, thank you to our audience for us for filling us
- 8:33in. And Charming said on that.
- 8:35But I was in a good spot on Saturday night that I didn't get
- 8:37bounced. I was able to to watch it
- 8:40anyway. And you're gonna be out there
- 8:42tomorrow night. Yeah, tomorrow night, tomorrow
- 8:44night out there tomorrow night, and then a couple more nights in
- 8:47September. So it's fun to do.
- 8:48Yeah. I can't say no to them.
- 8:50What brought me to the country, for crying out loud.
- 8:52Right. And when they have, when they
- 8:54have a need, I'll raise my hand and help them out.
- 8:56All right, So what do you expect from Owen Casey today?
- 8:59It's a great question, right? I mean to.
- 9:01How much sleep has he had? I I want to find that part of it
- 9:04out. Too.
- 9:05But does he it's, it's got to be all adrenaline at this point,
- 9:07right? And he's 23.
- 9:09Yeah. So at this point, at 23, you're
- 9:12probably not needing a whole lot of shut eye A.
- 9:14Little bit different world than what we're.
- 9:15Talking about on Adrenaline, you're finally getting your
- 9:17opportunity. I can't wait to watch him play.
- 9:20I really and truly can't because Kyle Tucker, let's be honest,
- 9:23he's been awful. He has been awful.
- 9:25You know who was unbelievable yesterday?
- 9:27Did you watch much of the game? I did not know.
- 9:29Kate Horton is is an ace. He is a ace to be not there yet,
- 9:36but this is a kid who's got everything going for him and he
- 9:40and and let's let's look at this Jays lineup.
- 9:42That's a pretty good lineup, right?
- 9:44He shut them down. I think he had that.
- 9:45He gave up one hit prior to getting pulled in the game.
- 9:49Did he get into the 6th? He got, he got into the 6th
- 9:53right. Vladimir Guerrero was coming up
- 9:57and we had two outs in the in the 6th inning when he walked, I
- 10:01think it was Bouchette in front of him and they and they pulled
- 10:03him because they didn't want Guerrero, who took him to the
- 10:06deepest part of the ballpark and it ball didn't leave.
- 10:09But I get it. But prior to that career high 8
- 10:13strikeouts, he was so darn good, so darn good.
- 10:17Cubs fans, you've got an ace in waiting in Kate Horton.
- 10:21You mentioned Kyle Tucker, and this is over the last 30 days
- 10:25going back to the middle of July, he's batting 200.
- 10:29Can you find PCA in that time? I can 201 home run for Kyle
- 10:34Tucker, six RBI. That's brutal.
- 10:36His OPS 636 that is. That's backup middle infielder.
- 10:44Yeah, it's ugly. During that same time frame.
- 10:47Pete Crow Armstrong. So so Tucker was 200 with one
- 10:50home run and six RBI. And six RBI, you know, tick
- 10:53better. 205 for PCA, two home runs and seven RBI.
- 10:59But point being, both of these guys who were, look, it's hard
- 11:03to kill them, right? Because they were such a big
- 11:05part of the Cubs pulling out to the lead that they did and
- 11:08having the season that they that they're in the midst of.
- 11:11But man, oh man has it gone South.
- 11:14So I brought up the question to Kathy and he didn't kind of go
- 11:16the way that I was hoping that he did.
- 11:18What? Did you ask him?
- 11:19About PCA and about what's closer to the truth for him,
- 11:25that this guy is going to be a perennial All Star or that he's
- 11:29not going to be as bad as he's been the last month or really
- 11:32six weeks. What's close to the truth?
- 11:35When he was having that ridiculous start to the season,
- 11:37that hot streak and every Cubs fan was killing me because I
- 11:40didn't think his personality, but he was played at a high
- 11:42level. And I think because of that,
- 11:44when I bring up the whiff rate, which was immense and we're
- 11:48talking 30% Whiffer, guys like that don't hit 280.
- 11:52They don't. He was having he was seeing
- 11:55everything well and but the likelihood he was never going to
- 11:58be at that pace. Well, that now we're coming back
- 12:01the other way and it's somewhere in the middle.
- 12:04I get that. But what is closer to reality,
- 12:06that PCA is a perennial All Star or he's a real nice player, a
- 12:10great defender, but that hole in the swing is always going to
- 12:13keep him and a lot of what if for him.
- 12:16Because that's what I still think it.
- 12:17Is well, obviously, I, I think you can remove his defense
- 12:20because I see this guy, I not only is he going to win gold
- 12:23gloves, he's going to win platinum gloves as the best
- 12:25defender in his league. I, I really believe that.
- 12:29I mean the, the balls that he's able to run down.
- 12:32God, I love watching him play center field, but it all comes
- 12:36down to his offensive numbers. Trent and I think it's fair.
- 12:38I mean he's going to steal a base.
- 12:40So those numbers are going to get there, but he's got to get
- 12:42on in order to do so. I, I hate to take the easy way
- 12:48out. I think it's going to be, I
- 12:51mean, some years he's going to, he's, he's going to have a above
- 12:54average numbers. Some years he's going to bring
- 12:56those numbers back down to where they, you know, the, where
- 12:59they're ultimately going to finish.
- 13:01I mean, you got to keep in mind just how how new the major
- 13:05leagues are to him still, right, That he's still, he's got the
- 13:10power I want to, I want to go on the positive side of it.
- 13:17Here are two numbers I mentioned that wiff rate.
- 13:19He is in the bottom 19% of all a baseball in that.
- 13:22Here's another. One and how, when, when did he
- 13:25fall to that level? Do do you have?
- 13:27I don't have it kind of broken down, but.
- 13:28So like April, May, June. But that was always a problem.
- 13:31The WIFF rate was always high. It was just when he was making
- 13:33contact, it was seemingly solid contact every single time and
- 13:37that's not going to happen. The other one, maybe even more
- 13:39concerning than the WIFF rate, is the chase rate.
- 13:41How many times he chases pitches outside of the zone?
- 13:44He's in the bottom 1%. No, I see He does it all the
- 13:47time, Trent. Of all of baseball, the bottom
- 13:491%, he chases 43.1% of his pitches outside the zone.
- 13:55Yeah, you, you can't sustain, no, any kind of level of
- 13:58sustainable. There's always lefties.
- 14:00And what are people going to do now?
- 14:02More and more I got to throw him a strike.
- 14:04You don't have to. You don't have to because he's
- 14:06going to get himself out. And I think the book is now out
- 14:10on PCA after that. Just don't throw him strikes and
- 14:13he'll get himself out. Hey boy, 1215 Miller and Condon,
- 14:18welcome to the program here on a Thursday.
- 14:21All right. I heard this yesterday and I
- 14:22bring it up because you and I, we talk a lot of sports wagering
- 14:26on our program, get a lot of criticism for it still to this
- 14:29day. I get it.
- 14:30It's not for everybody, but it is for the noon to two.
- 14:33So have you heard the theory what's going to happen to the
- 14:38Red Zone channel that like it or not, and a lot of people won't,
- 14:43that the Red Zone channel is about to get a significant
- 14:50injection of ESPN bet? I've heard the theory, but every
- 14:55time that I've seen or read about the theory, it's been shot
- 14:59down. By.
- 15:00By the NFL. But they don't own it anymore.
- 15:03They do. They do on the red zone.
- 15:05The red zone is still being produced by the NFL.
- 15:08That was part of this deal and this agreement.
- 15:10That red zone as we know it. Scott Hanson has just signed A4.
- 15:14Year deal, he goes over there. He is with it.
- 15:16This is part of it. And this is still being produced
- 15:19by the NFL. Their fingerprints, the ESPN
- 15:22fingerprints, this is much like inside the NBA.
- 15:24This is much like Pat McAfee, at least as it pertains NFL
- 15:28Network. That's separate.
- 15:29That's a different conversation. And yes, I think that will be
- 15:31ESPN fized if you will red zone though, because.
- 15:36So it won't change at all. There'll be no live betting
- 15:38numbers that appear on your screen in the in in the.
- 15:43If it happens hours, it will not be because of ESPN, it will
- 15:46because NFL. The NFL has made that decision
- 15:50to do that because the other component to this is red zone
- 15:52was not sold completely. They own ESPN bet Well the NFL
- 15:56does. They own 10%.
- 15:58Right, but this is still a production of the NFL and on top
- 16:02of it, the NFL also maintain the digital rights to red zone.
- 16:07So if you don't have ESPN Plus, if you don't have a subscription
- 16:11where you can buy it on DIRECTV or whatever your cable system
- 16:14is, if you want the digital rights, you have to subscribe to
- 16:17NFL Plus. That's why the digital rights
- 16:20remain with the NFL. So I push back on that.
- 16:23From everything I read, I think that theory is wrong unless the
- 16:26NFL makes a decision that they want to do that.
- 16:30Because of their ownership. Look, I'm not advocating for it.
- 16:32I don't watch the red zone. I'm I'm not a red zone
- 16:35aficionado like so many people are.
- 16:37I mean, they love it. You guys love it.
- 16:39You watch it all the time. I'm just not, that's just not my
- 16:42cup of tea. But well, I hope you're right.
- 16:45I hope you're right because that would that would lead to a lot
- 16:47of upset folks. I have to believe you know what
- 16:50I mean? And.
- 16:50Well, and look, if it's something on the bottom line,
- 16:54guess what? On red zone no.
- 16:56But what I'm hearing is they're going to actually have somebody
- 16:58come in and say. You know, like that's not what
- 17:01the channel you're. Freeland, OR.
- 17:03Yeah, but that's not what the channel is.
- 17:04And if you do change that, then you're changing what it is.
- 17:07But from everything that I have read and seen about this, that
- 17:10will not be the case unless the NFL them themselves completely
- 17:14turned the way that they're doing that.
- 17:16But last year, DraftKings was a huge sponsor of theirs.
- 17:18They were on every broadcast at the end.
- 17:21One of my favorite parts at 6:30 central time is they're wrapping
- 17:24things up is they show every touchdown that happened
- 17:27throughout the course of the day.
- 17:29And you can see back-to-back to back-to-back that the 60
- 17:31touchdowns from the day. And you get to see them to wrap
- 17:34it up before I flip over to NBC and get over to Sunday Night
- 17:37Football. That's how my day ends.
- 17:39Almost every single Sunday is with that.
- 17:41And who was it sponsored by? DraftKings.
- 17:45Fascinating stuff. All right, Miller and Condon
- 17:47underway going to take a time out going to head north, catch
- 17:50up with Nick Nelson more on the on the on the twins ownership.
- 17:54So just in in the 24 hours since the news broke, I know that
- 17:58you're that you that you haven't come off the ledge, but have you
- 18:02seen who are there any names being floated out there as to
- 18:06who they're perhaps going to piece some of their ownership
- 18:10off to the fit the new face of that franchise, not the pole
- 18:13ads. Yes, they would still own a
- 18:14significant chunk, but they were looking for, you know, partners
- 18:19that would be the face in in on their community.
- 18:21Are you seeing any names? I have not.
- 18:23That has not been the space that I've been going down though
- 18:26either because I was seeing red yesterday and.
- 18:30Smoke coming out of yours. I really was I.
- 18:32Was so upset and because I thought we're finally rid of
- 18:35this right? I don't care who the owner is,
- 18:38whatever's behind door #2 I'm taking door #2 Could be worse,
- 18:41but I'm just. That'll be tough, but.
- 18:43But I'm sick of door number one. I can't stand it anymore.
- 18:47And then to see that and the way that they're just spitting the
- 18:49fans faces and the just to not understand what is actually
- 18:55happening here. The whole press release pissed
- 18:58me off even more. And, and just the, the verbiage
- 19:01that was used and going out there and we're going to try to
- 19:04build a winner and all these things, it's all lies.
- 19:06So those, those are the parts that definitely leave me
- 19:09frustrated when I was going through and looking at it.
- 19:11So I will, I have not gone down the path of who it's going to
- 19:15be. I'm, I'm still kind of worried
- 19:18about just the way that this looks and, and what is it
- 19:20realistic that this influx of money is going to change what
- 19:23the Minnesota Twins can? Do well, for your sake, I hope
- 19:26that that's the case. All right, we're going to catch
- 19:28up with Heather. She's at the State Fair kitchen
- 19:30refresh. She'll be out there today.
- 19:33We're going to hear from her and both the the first hour here.
- 19:36In fact, we're here from her momentarily before we take our
- 19:38break and bring on board Nick Nelson.
- 19:40Then in our number 2, again from the top of the program, our
- 19:43number 2, Trent Bama, Bob and I are going to go on record with
- 19:47our picks. Who's going to win the the Power
- 19:484 conferences? Who's going to play for the
- 19:50championships? Some of the, you know, some of
- 19:53the other props, if you will, that we'll throw out there and
- 19:58we'll do that in the 1:00 hour. Trent, We'll make some plays of
- 20:01the day. Those will be sponsored by
- 20:04Circus Sports. I was surprised that there is no
- 20:06NFL or no NFL football games tonight.
- 20:08I thought Thursdays was a a night that you could almost
- 20:11count on. Watching an NFL game because
- 20:14there is very, very little, very limited schedule of MLB.
- 20:19All right, let's head to the fair.
- 20:20Here's Heather Kitchen refresh and she's standing by.
- 20:24Hello, Heather, How are you? Good, Ken.
- 20:27It's a beautiful day to be out here at the Iowa State Fair and
- 20:30I'm being serious about it. It's not too hot.
- 20:32It's been a little overcast, although I think the sun is
- 20:34coming out. And I am here with Joe from
- 20:36Kitchen Refresh. We are in row 400, Buried
- 20:40Industries building, actually booth 426.
- 20:44I'm going to be out here until 2.
- 20:45But of course, Kitchen Refresh is here from open to close, 9:00
- 20:48to 9:00 every day, the Iowa State Fair.
- 20:50And you have some great deals going on for the Fair Joe.
- 20:54Yeah, absolutely. We're giving out 25 5% off all
- 20:57kitchen refresh products to anybody that signs up here at
- 21:00the fair, and then there's a lottery from one of those lucky
- 21:04people is going to get 50% off their kitchen here in a couple
- 21:06weeks. Wow and the selling point for
- 21:08kitchen refresh is you can have a like new kitchen with no demo.
- 21:14That's the best best best part about it.
- 21:16It is 3 to 5 days average job time with no demo required.
- 21:20You don't even have to take anything out of your cabinets.
- 21:23So I've done this, our kitchen looks amazing if you stop by I
- 21:27have some pictures I can even show you of our before and after
- 21:30of our kitchen. And again some great State Fair
- 21:33deals only. We've also got some KXNO swag to
- 21:37hand out as well. So come on by and see me.
- 21:39I am here until 2. It is Kitchen refresh Buried
- 21:42Industries building at the Iowa State Fair with one O 6.3 KXNO
- 21:46and the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:54By 12:30, Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network,
- 21:57Trenton I with you until 2 off the bench at that time.
- 22:00Lucas Strain, Sean Roberts take you until 5:00.
- 22:04Still to come this hour. We've got a recorded piece today
- 22:07as the Chiefs are on an airplane headed to Seattle.
- 22:10Mitch Holtis's daily Chiefs training camp report.
- 22:12Papa John's Central Iowa sponsors those.
- 22:14So we will hear from Mitch coming up here in about, oh, 20
- 22:17minutes or thereabouts. But let's head north before we
- 22:19go South, up to the Twin Cities we go.
- 22:23Nick Nelson, twinsdaily.com. We'll do some twins.
- 22:25Get a little report caught on JJ McCarthy as well as we head
- 22:31north. Hello, Nick Trenton, Ken, thanks
- 22:33for coming on. How are you?
- 22:35I'm good. How are you, gentlemen?
- 22:36Doing well. I won't speak for Trent.
- 22:40He did plenty of that yesterday and I think the audience is well
- 22:43aware of his feelings. I was struck though, Nick.
- 22:46I saw an interview from the Twins locker room at Yankee
- 22:50Stadium with Byron Buxton that was done prior to the game.
- 22:54And I would have thought that, you know, he was kind of, you
- 22:57know, and that maybe concerned might be a little bit too over
- 23:02the top, but he seemed OK. He seemed pleased.
- 23:08He's he, he likes the relationship with the pole ads.
- 23:11He admitted that that's all he'd known, unless you heard it
- 23:15differently. I was kind of surprised that
- 23:17Byron Buxton was was OK with status quo as far as ownership.
- 23:23No, I didn't hear it differently.
- 23:24I personally wasn't surprised. I mean, Byron Buxton is is sort
- 23:27of a unique Major League Baseball player.
- 23:29I think he's very much a loyal, loyal guy, a relationships guy.
- 23:34And it means a lot to him that the Poloid family is the one
- 23:36that, you know, was here when that drafted him, that has been
- 23:39owning the team the whole time he's been here.
- 23:41He's got to know them. He's got a long relationship
- 23:42with them, I'm sure. So, you know, as everyone else
- 23:45was kind of jumping ship and asking for trades here at the
- 23:47deadline, Buxton was holding strong and saying this is where
- 23:49I want to be. So I think that's just who he
- 23:51is. I would I would be surprised if
- 23:53he said a bad word about the poll ads honestly.
- 23:54And I also saw that apparently after the trade deadline came
- 23:59and went, there was Buxton who gathered the team.
- 24:01I think he said that they were in Cleveland and the team all
- 24:04out, went out for dinner and basically is we're all in this
- 24:07together type again, a real team bonding after the trade deadline
- 24:11and was orchestrated by Buxton. Yeah, I mean, that's leadership
- 24:15right there. I said on Twitter the other day,
- 24:18you know, if anything kind of silver lining comes out of this
- 24:20whole situation, which is very depressing, I hope it's that,
- 24:23you know, more people come to appreciate Byron Bustin, the
- 24:26person that he is, the one-of-a-kind sort of individual
- 24:29that he is, in addition to being a fantastic player, just just a
- 24:32great human and a loyal guy and someone who cares about this
- 24:34team in this franchise. I don't really hold it against
- 24:37Korea or Jax and those guys for asking out given the way things
- 24:40were going, but it does make you appreciate all the more, you
- 24:43know. So we get to this point after it
- 24:48looked like this winner, it was going to be Ishpea, that he was
- 24:50going to be the guy, and then that fell apart.
- 24:52Now he's going to own the White Sox here within the next half
- 24:54decade. And then we really never heard
- 24:56names. What we go to the All Star break
- 24:58and oh, it felt pretty imminent listening to Manfred reporting
- 25:02up in Minnesota that it was going to happen one way or the
- 25:05other. And then it doesn't.
- 25:06So take us into the details here in these two minority stake
- 25:10owners that are coming in, one from Minnesota and one from the
- 25:13East Coast. Yes, an interesting situation,
- 25:16kind of hard to figure out. It seems like we're sort of
- 25:18still getting the details. I read Dan Hayes article in the
- 25:22Athletic, which I thought was pretty illuminating.
- 25:24And he mentioned that there was at least one buyer who is still
- 25:29very interested, working to put the financing together to meet
- 25:32that 1.7 billion price tag, which was kind of being bandied
- 25:36about. And he was shocked when this
- 25:38happened. He was kind of taken off guard.
- 25:39He or they or whoever were taken off guard when when this was
- 25:43announced. So an interesting sort of change
- 25:46of events. I think the way it looks is, I
- 25:48mean, it was reported a while ago that Jill Paul had wanted to
- 25:51stay in charge. I think there's a lot of
- 25:52associating that goes on with the poll ads as an entity not
- 25:55really caring about this franchise because they don't.
- 25:57But I do think Jill Paul ad is a baseball fan who does care, you
- 26:01know, so potentially that's a good thing that he's sort of the
- 26:03remaining 1. I don't think it's a good thing.
- 26:05You could say that the poll ads as an entity are going to be
- 26:07still in charge. But if he's new stakeholders are
- 26:11coming in, these new minority partners and they actually are
- 26:15replacing some of those people who are very checked out and
- 26:17uninvested, I could see it being a good thing.
- 26:19But anyone who is, you know, expecting there's to be some
- 26:22giant rise in payroll or changing of the status quo, I
- 26:24think it's probably going to be disappointed.
- 26:26Who will be the face of ownership?
- 26:28Who will, who will? I mean, is it, will it continue
- 26:30to be Joe Polat or is this somebody from one of these new
- 26:33entities? I mean, who would be I guess the
- 26:36guy on Front St. representing ownership?
- 26:40I hope it's not Joe Polad because he's not doing a good
- 26:42job. He's just making people angrier
- 26:44and angrier with every tone deaf, oblivious statement that
- 26:46he makes publicly. I, I assume that he'll be
- 26:50basically be the front man because the Polads still are the
- 26:52controlling partners here and he is the the figurehead for that
- 26:56group. But I would suspect that whoever
- 26:59is going to be in this, these new minority partners groups,
- 27:03especially the Minnesota one, which I would expect will have
- 27:05some recognizable names, if not even former Twins players or or
- 27:08or coaches or something like that.
- 27:11I I bet. They'll try to put them a little
- 27:13more out front just to kind of try to change the vibes and the
- 27:16PR aspect of this because, I mean, the poets can't be so
- 27:19oblivious to to not know how incredibly unpopular they are in
- 27:22the state right now. Who, who would be, who would
- 27:24satisfy or scratch that itch amongst Twins fans?
- 27:27Who's a former player, very popular, that could maybe calm
- 27:31the waters a little bit. Is there?
- 27:32Is there a name that you get that comes to mind?
- 27:34Nick. The most obvious name that comes
- 27:37to mind is Joe Mauer, you know, the highest earning Twins
- 27:40players in history. So it makes sense from that
- 27:42standpoint. I think, you know, knowing what
- 27:44we know about Joe Mauer, he barely likes to, you know, be
- 27:47out there and put his face out there when he's a player.
- 27:49So it'd be kind of surprising if he was trying to take like a
- 27:51very public facing role. Tori Hunter was another name
- 27:54that came to mind. I know he's been very interested
- 27:56in the business of baseball. He made a lot of money during
- 27:58his career. So, but you know, as, as we've
- 28:00discussed a lot, like there's a difference between rich and rich
- 28:04enough to be involved in buying part of a baseball team, right?
- 28:06This is crazy money. So it does have to be a pretty
- 28:08limited field of names that could be in that.
- 28:10When we kind of map out the future so they get this influx
- 28:14of cash that is going to help their debt, which was huge for a
- 28:17Major League Baseball team and nearly half a billion dollars in
- 28:20debt that they'd incurred with the baseball.
- 28:23Is it going to lead to, yes, there needs to be a rebuild.
- 28:26Now you don't sell off 10 major leaguers and expect there's not
- 28:29going to be some kind of rebuild.
- 28:30But when we look 345 years down the line, maybe when that next
- 28:34crew starting to come up and make when a window was open like
- 28:36it was two years ago, is the anticipation now that the poll
- 28:39ads, they're actually going to spend money.
- 28:43I do think that the debt that's been hanging over them has been
- 28:46a major impediment in terms of being able to spend, being able
- 28:49to invest in payroll because you know when you're at a point of
- 28:52400 million in debt, paying down that principle in the mass of
- 28:55interest on it is a huge amount of money.
- 28:57So I think there's no question and poll ad has basically been
- 29:00pretty open about this that these new investors that are
- 29:03coming in, a big part of that is getting that debt paid down.
- 29:06And I think once they get that taken care of, not only does the
- 29:09franchise become more attractive if they try to engage in a sales
- 29:12process again. But yes, I think they will have
- 29:14more money coming in from the investors and just in their own,
- 29:17you know, liquid money in their own pockets to be able to invest
- 29:19a little more. So I do think that is probably
- 29:21an upshot that you could see. Is it true, Nick, that the Joe
- 29:24Ryan was actually on a plane or headed to the headed to catch a
- 29:28plane to Boston that he was informed that they he is moving.
- 29:32I mean, they're ace right now. Joe Ryan was actually, you know,
- 29:36it was his impression that he had just been traded.
- 29:38Was that true? I don't know if I heard that
- 29:41detail, but I certainly believe that the Red Sox came on very
- 29:44strong at the end. I mean, all the reporting and
- 29:46things I've heard of have been to that effect.
- 29:48And I think they did come pretty close to getting something done
- 29:50in the final minutes there. I certainly think they were very
- 29:54open to trading Joe Ryan. I think they'll be open to doing
- 29:57it again this offseason because what happened at the trade
- 29:59deadline, there's no two ways about it, they punted next
- 30:01season. So, you know, if you're not
- 30:03going to try to compete next year, why not try to cash in and
- 30:05build for the future a little more?
- 30:07Even though that's very depressing to me because I
- 30:08really think this team had the bones of a contender with Pablo
- 30:12and Ryan and that bullpen and Correa.
- 30:14And to just give up and start over with a bunch of prospects
- 30:17who were coin flips essentially, even if they're good prospects,
- 30:20is very, very saddening to. Me say this, Louis Varlins, one
- 30:23of my favorite Blue Jays already.
- 30:25Yeah. And he, he was like #4 in that
- 30:27bullpen in Minnesota and showed you the strength that they had
- 30:30there. And obviously not going to be
- 30:31the case going forward if they trade Pablo, they chose trade
- 30:35Joe Ryan and, and maybe it's just Buxton's the one that hangs
- 30:37around. It's kind of part of the rebuild
- 30:39going from there. Is there any prospects to get
- 30:42excited about when we look back to the trade deadline?
- 30:44I I think I just got overwhelmed with it too.
- 30:47I mean, there was just so much there and it was hard.
- 30:49What this prospect is outside of the Korea one, which was, I
- 30:52mean, an absolute joke of what they got in return.
- 30:55Are there any prospects that Twins fans should be excited
- 30:58about and should definitely have on the radar now that they got
- 31:01last a couple weeks ago? Yeah, I mean, they wouldn't
- 31:03necessarily be considered prospects, but I mean the two
- 31:06sort of Major League ready pitchers that they got back in
- 31:08Taj Bradley and Mick Abel, very interesting players, really good
- 31:12stuff. You know, we're once very highly
- 31:13rated prospects, both of their stock down a little bit.
- 31:17I think if there's one area where I trust the Twins to sort
- 31:19of be able to turn some around, it's in that pitching area on
- 31:22the hitting side. You know, you get guys like Alan
- 31:24Roden, who we've seen. You got guys like James Altman
- 31:26who's in AAA. Those are also guys who are kind
- 31:29of formerly really highly regarded and their stock is
- 31:32down. I think I have a lot less faith
- 31:33in the Twins to turn around hitters like that just based on
- 31:36what we've seen. But in terms of actual
- 31:38prospects, I think the big name for sure is Eduardo Tait.
- 31:41This catching prospect that that they got a sort of the
- 31:43centerpiece in the Duron trade. That to me was easily the best
- 31:46trade they made because that addresses a real organizational
- 31:49need. They have nothing in the catch
- 31:51and cupboard after Jeffers. And he's looking like a really
- 31:54good player. I've even watched him play a
- 31:55little bit since he came over and I think he's playing with
- 31:57the Cedar Rapids Colonels now. And hi, A as a teenager, you
- 32:01know, big swing, he's a big body.
- 32:03He looks like a catcher. So I think that's a pretty
- 32:05intriguing pick up. I want a football question for
- 32:08Nick Nelson. Nick, conflicting reports.
- 32:10Depends what you read, who you see on X.
- 32:13When it comes to JJ McCarthy, he's either going to be a cat
- 32:17miss or boy, oh boy, this was a miss.
- 32:19Where? Where are you?
- 32:20What are you hearing on on JJ McCarthy?
- 32:22How has he looked? I mean, it really could go
- 32:27either way. I think you nailed it.
- 32:29You know, you hear a lot. You hear a lot.
- 32:30I haven't had a chance to watch much.
- 32:31I didn't see his OneDrive that he played in the pre season
- 32:33game. You know, it sounds like
- 32:35certainly in terms of all the intangibles and the leadership
- 32:38and the character, he's got it all going, which which I it does
- 32:41not surprise me. I think that was sort of his
- 32:43Rep. I mean, this is a guy who has
- 32:44been a championship player at every level in the past.
- 32:48The question is just can he throw?
- 32:50Can he make the passes? Is he going to be consistent
- 32:52enough? And that's where I feel like
- 32:53I've heard some very sort of varying accounts.
- 32:56You know, I hear he's missed a lot of makeable throws.
- 32:58You know, he's overthrowing his receivers.
- 33:00And that's always sort of been my concern.
- 33:02You know, I don't want to compare him to like Christian
- 33:04Ponder. But when you think of, I think I
- 33:07think Ponder was the last quarterback or the only
- 33:08quarterback they've drafted close to this high.
- 33:10And it was like a similar situation where it's a draft
- 33:13where several quarterbacks had already gone.
- 33:15The Vikings need they liked him. But there's a reason all these,
- 33:18you know, several teams passed on this guy.
- 33:19So I just get a little concerned about that.
- 33:22It feels like such an unknown on a team that I think otherwise is
- 33:25very well equipped to potentially compete for a Super
- 33:27Bowl. I love the Christian Ponder
- 33:28reference. Where did he go?
- 33:2915 overall. All right.
- 33:30I think he did, yeah. Good stuff.
- 33:33Nick Nelson, twinsdaily.com. Nick, thanks for jumping on,
- 33:36giving us the latest on the the twins sale, etcetera.
- 33:39We appreciate you doing this for us, Nick.
- 33:41Thank you. Yeah.
- 33:42Thanks for having me guys. Good to talk to you Nick Nelson
- 33:45as we check in on the Twins. Guessing not a lot of folks will
- 33:48be doing that going forward. Yeah.
- 33:49Well, and a lot of reaction over at Twins Daily, if you're
- 33:52looking to kind of catch up on the sale, a lot of good
- 33:54different kind of viewpoints over there at twinsdaily.com.
- 33:56Nick and the whole crew doing a great job of keeping that up.
- 34:00And Christian Ponder, boy, I'm going to be right if that's the
- 34:02case, right? Yeah, if they're getting
- 34:06comparisons to Christian Ponder. I was out to dinner.
- 34:10It was my wife and I and my step brother and his wife at the old
- 34:16Chicago not there anymore over on Merle Hay.
- 34:19And we just went out for dinner. The draft was on.
- 34:22Everybody's Vikings fans. Those three are Vikings fans.
- 34:24And then there's me. And I, as the pick is coming in,
- 34:27say I hope they take precious powder because.
- 34:31I. And what happens?
- 34:32And the devastated look on all three of their faces.
- 34:36They even knew that the excitement was taken away with
- 34:39Christian Ponder. Oh, JJ McCarthy, be another
- 34:41Christian Ponder. That'd be so wonderful.
- 34:43It was the what what draft was it was the 2011 drawn.
- 34:48So let's he went 12th overall. So here are the quarterbacks
- 34:51that went ahead of him. If I can Scroll down here and
- 34:55find this very quickly. All right, the Panthers had the
- 34:57number one pick. They took Cam Newton easy one
- 34:59good pick. Then Broncos took Von Miller.
- 35:01All right, here we go. Q BS Jake Locker was the next
- 35:06quarterback off the board. He went eight to Tennessee.
- 35:09Blaine Gabbert, fresh off a loss against the Hawkeyes, went 10 to
- 35:15Jacksonville. You know who went between Blaine
- 35:19Gabbert and Christian? Oh, my God, this is going to
- 35:22hunt Vikings fans, Jaguar fans, not a quarterback.
- 35:26Do you know who the 11th pick in the draft was that year?
- 35:29No. JJ Watt.
- 35:31Wow. Oh my God, this is almost as
- 35:36bad. Almost as bad, because it's not
- 35:38quite as bad as what Elway did when he took what's the bum's
- 35:42name? Bradley Chubb at 5 and Buffalo
- 35:49runs to the podium and selects Josh Allen.
- 35:52Josh Allen. That was a stretch and you know,
- 35:54without the right tutelage, I don't know if Josh Allen would
- 35:57have got where he is right now. He was awful early on and we so
- 36:01rarely see guys that turn it around right into him and to the
- 36:03staff. I think it was more situational.
- 36:06Awful good in a Broncos uniform. Yeah, they would have screwed it
- 36:08up. Tell yourself Elway did.
- 36:10Screw it up. Well, Elway scouted him, and
- 36:13when he was at Wyoming and he didn't like, Elway coached him
- 36:16in the Senior Bowl. Didn't like him.
- 36:19He saw what he saw. Quarterback awful, awful front
- 36:23office. We didn't break up.
- 36:24Bye Miller and Condon.
- 36:37Welcome back. Going upon one O clock, about 10
- 36:40before one O clock. All right, the Chiefs headed to
- 36:43Seattle. Mitch Holtis as daily Chiefs
- 36:46training camp report both today and tomorrow on tape.
- 36:49Here's Mitch what he has to say today.
- 36:50All right fellas, I'm on a plane headed to Seattle for preseason
- 36:53game #2 against the Seahawks tomorrow night.
- 36:56But today I wanted to stay on my Nitty Gritty week.
- 37:00And who are the players on this roster who have to do The Dirty
- 37:02work, the nitty gritty work to make the team successful?
- 37:06She's tight end. Travis Kelsey may be having
- 37:08record-breaking podcast with his girlfriend Taylor Swift, but his
- 37:11running mate at tight end, Noah Gray continues to move forward
- 37:15quietly doing his nitty gritty work.
- 37:17Gray had career highs last year in 2024 and yards, touchdowns,
- 37:21catches. He had four touchdowns and a two
- 37:24week spurt at Buffalo and at Carolina.
- 37:26But now it's time for Kelsey to get even more help from Noah
- 37:29Gray and for Gray to take the next step.
- 37:32Listening to the coaches and just executing the game plan
- 37:35that is set forth for us every single day, and it's made me a
- 37:39better football player every year.
- 37:40You know, I thank God every year that I'm a part of this
- 37:42organization that really values the work of practice, and it's
- 37:46just really inspiring to see all these guys come out here and
- 37:49really push me to make me a better football player.
- 37:51How much did you notice that even the spring and summer with
- 37:54OTAs and the mandatory mini camp because almost everybody was
- 37:57here. Yeah, I mean, guys are just,
- 38:00they just know, you know, the importance of practice.
- 38:04They know the importance of being together and building that
- 38:06camaraderie. And you saw it from day one
- 38:08since we got here in the spring, like you were saying, you know,
- 38:10guys were showing up, guys were coming to work.
- 38:13And it's not mandatory. You know, that was all voluntary
- 38:15stuff and just kind of shows the spirit of the team, kind of
- 38:18where their heads at and what their goals are to win every
- 38:21single game that we can this year.
- 38:23The rest of the tight end room is up for grabs, and tomorrow
- 38:25night's game against Seattle is another chance to evaluate
- 38:28second year Tide in Jared Wiley as well as former Packers star
- 38:32Robert Tunyon, who's been impressive in this camp and last
- 38:36week led the Chiefs in receiving in the game at Arizona.
- 38:40All right, thanks to the Donaldsons and Papa John's pizza
- 38:42at State Fair time. It's Saturday night with the
- 38:45Seahawks and Chiefs really feels like a pizza to me.
- 38:48From papajohns@papajohns.com. They're working on new specials
- 38:52as we speak at the lab in Johnston.
- 38:55On my way to Seattle. I'm Mitch Holtis, voice of the
- 38:58Chiefs all. Right, good stuff from Mitch
- 39:00Holtis Daily Chiefs training camp reports Mitch will be back
- 39:03with us live tomorrow. He will preview get his thoughts
- 39:06of pre game show prior to the pre game show tomorrow.
- 39:10He will join us on tape and kind of layout what he expects to see
- 39:14when Seattle and the Chiefs go head to head in pre season game
- 39:18#2 where are you on this team? They're going to be really good.
- 39:22Like really good. Like 15 and 2.
- 39:24Good. 13 or 4? Yeah, they'll take a step back
- 39:27and be 13 or 4. When you say it that way, that
- 39:30would be a step back but still win the division in your mind.
- 39:34Broncos are close, yeah. So are the Chargers.
- 39:36No, they're not. Broncos are close.
- 39:38Can't get there with the Chargers.
- 39:40OK. Can't put I can't trust either
- 39:42of those quarterbacks. Would they Herbert or Knicks?
- 39:46When Justin Herbert does something big in a big game,
- 39:48wake me up. Knicks has not had a good
- 39:50training camp. That's reports in the Denver
- 39:52Post. I don't believe for a second,
- 39:53personally. Big news hour 2 coming up.
- 39:56Bama's going to join us. Miller Condon.
- 39:58We're on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
