Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily a body here. You are listening to
- 0:23Speaker 1: five Minute Friday from Hurdle. Now, before I get into
- 0:27Speaker 1: what I want to talk about on five Minute Friday today,
- 0:29Speaker 1: I am alerting you that I am putting a pole
- 0:33Speaker 1: on the Spotify for this episode. I want you to
- 0:38Speaker 1: go into your Spotify and answer the poll. Capiche capiche.
- 0:44Speaker 1: If you're not listening to this on Spotify and you're
- 0:46Speaker 1: listening to it on another platform, that's totally fine, But
- 0:50Speaker 1: if it becomes of you, I would appreciate it if
- 0:54Speaker 1: you answer the Spotify pole, like, go in there, just
- 0:57Speaker 1: tap a quick button, you know, find Hurdle. Make sure
- 1:00Speaker 1: that it's in your top podcasts. You get the gist.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I digress five Minute Friday. Hi, Hello, how is everyone?
- 1:07Speaker 1: I am good. I'm good. It was a little colder
- 1:11Speaker 1: at the tail end of this week than I would
- 1:13Speaker 1: have liked, but rumor has it it's going to be
- 1:15Speaker 1: eighty degrees here in New York on Saturday, which is wild,
- 1:19Speaker 1: absolutely wild, and I'm not mad about it in the
- 1:22Speaker 1: least bit. I planned to spend as much time outside
- 1:26Speaker 1: as possible period for five minutes this week. I want
- 1:30Speaker 1: to talk about this idea that I have been navigating,
- 1:35Speaker 1: thinking about struggling with maybe a little bit lately, that
- 1:38Speaker 1: you're not supposed to share the journey toward your big
- 1:42Speaker 1: wins or your successes. I posted something about this on
- 1:45Speaker 1: Instagram yesterday and it seemed to resonate with a lot
- 1:48Speaker 1: of folks. It's this concept that things happen for some folks,
- 1:55Speaker 1: and especially in the world of social media, I feel
- 1:59Speaker 1: like all you often it is just landing with a
- 2:03Speaker 1: big share. It's like I'm coming out with a book,
- 2:07Speaker 1: or I'm doing a morning show segment, or I'm so
- 2:11Speaker 1: excited to share that I'm on this podcast, or i
- 2:15Speaker 1: am announcing this big thing. I could go on and
- 2:19Speaker 1: make up other examples, but I think you get the gist.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And so many people that I respect and admire and watch,
- 2:27Speaker 1: even if it's just from the wings, so to speak,
- 2:30Speaker 1: they make these announcements and there's just no context on
- 2:34Speaker 1: all of the hard work that got this person to
- 2:39Speaker 1: this mountaintop, to this big moment. I'm not saying universally,
- 2:44Speaker 1: but oftentimes this is the case. And so sometimes I
- 2:48Speaker 1: feel as though I'm not supposed to act like getting
- 2:53Speaker 1: the things that excite me is challenging that I shouldn't
- 2:57Speaker 1: let on that there were rugs on the way to
- 3:02Speaker 1: these big destination goals that I have. Case in point, yesterday,
- 3:07Speaker 1: I was really stoked because I had the opportunity to
- 3:11Speaker 1: lead a goal setting workshop on behalf of Nike at
- 3:16Speaker 1: their New York headquarters for a group of women. And
- 3:20Speaker 1: this is something an idea that I have been pitching
- 3:23Speaker 1: and working on and trying to find the right fit
- 3:26Speaker 1: for sometime now. Yesterday finally happened, and it is something
- 3:32Speaker 1: that I really view as a personal and professional win,
- 3:37Speaker 1: something that excites me, that I'm passionate about. And when
- 3:41Speaker 1: I think about the last few months, if I'm being
- 3:44Speaker 1: entirely transparent, Q one has been extremely difficult for me
- 3:49Speaker 1: for a number of reasons, and so I have been
- 3:54Speaker 1: cod heads down. I hate the word grinding, but I
- 3:58Speaker 1: feel like just real cawing my way out of the
- 4:01Speaker 1: mud in certain aspects, trying to do the best I
- 4:04Speaker 1: can with what I have. And so when something happens
- 4:07Speaker 1: that feels like a true win, that is the example,
- 4:11Speaker 1: the product of so much work that I've been putting
- 4:15Speaker 1: in behind the scenes, I'm excited to share and I'm
- 4:19Speaker 1: excited to tell you that it didn't just happen that
- 4:21Speaker 1: it wasn't just handed to me on a platter. As
- 4:25Speaker 1: I'm telling this story, it makes me think of folks
- 4:28Speaker 1: who maybe don't show or highlight all of the hard
- 4:32Speaker 1: work that goes into training for something like a marathon.
- 4:36Speaker 1: That's what I think really makes me love so many
- 4:41Speaker 1: of the people that I keep up with on social
- 4:44Speaker 1: when it comes to that type of content. I want
- 4:46Speaker 1: to be a part of the process. I want to
- 4:48Speaker 1: be a part of the journey. And so, yeah, I've
- 4:51Speaker 1: just been struggling with this idea. It's it doesn't just happen, right.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Your favorite author didn't just come out with a book
- 4:59Speaker 1: because someone said I want you to write a book
- 5:01Speaker 1: and they said, okay. There were hundreds of thousands of
- 5:06Speaker 1: hours that went into making that book. Even for the
- 5:10Speaker 1: best of the best authors, the ones that are household
- 5:12Speaker 1: names right now, right, they had to put in a
- 5:15Speaker 1: certain amount of legwork to get to where they are.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I try to be my own biggest hype human. I
- 5:20Speaker 1: know the importance of putting out your big dreams and
- 5:23Speaker 1: your big goals and going after the things that you
- 5:25Speaker 1: want and affirming that and hype, hype, hype, But there's
- 5:30Speaker 1: a journey and I am on it and I am
- 5:32Speaker 1: nowhere near your perfect and I know that vulnerability is
- 5:36Speaker 1: relatable and that unexpected level of perfection just isn't anyway,
- 5:42Speaker 1: we'd love to hear your thoughts. Feel free to hit
- 5:44Speaker 1: me up over a DM or let me know if
- 5:46Speaker 1: this is something that you think about over at Hurdle Podcast.
- 5:49Speaker 1: And of course I'm also over at Emily a body.
- 5:53Speaker 1: What excites you right now? What are you working on
- 5:55Speaker 1: behind the scenes that maybe you haven't told even your
- 5:59Speaker 1: friends or your family only the whole story. Why haven't
- 6:02Speaker 1: you told them? And could it be good for you
- 6:05Speaker 1: to open up about it just a little bit? What
- 6:08Speaker 1: are you working on behind the scenes? What are you
- 6:10Speaker 1: excited about right now? And maybe my challenge to you
- 6:14Speaker 1: is to talk to somebody about it today. And now
- 6:18Speaker 1: a listener question. Hi, Emily, my name is Kim. I
- 6:21Speaker 1: know this is a super random question, but as someone
- 6:24Speaker 1: who also owns her own business, I am wondering if
- 6:27Speaker 1: you have any tips or tricks for us for tax
- 6:30Speaker 1: scenes And I love this. Whenever April comes around, I
- 6:34Speaker 1: get super overwhelmed. And although I've been working with the
- 6:37Speaker 1: same account in for years, I'm always worried that I'm
- 6:40Speaker 1: doing something wrong. Would love your insight on this. Thank
- 6:43Speaker 1: you so much, love the show. Oh, Kim, Kim Kim Okay. Well,
- 6:47Speaker 1: first and foremost, I'm happy to hear that you're working
- 6:49Speaker 1: with an account in I think that it is truly
- 6:52Speaker 1: the most valuable thing that you can do for yourself
- 6:56Speaker 1: is allow someone who is better than you to do
- 6:59Speaker 1: the thing that they are good at, so that you
- 7:01Speaker 1: can focus on the things that you are good at.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I know that it's hard to spend sometimes to make
- 7:07Speaker 1: that happen, but tax season is, without a doubt, a
- 7:11Speaker 1: very important time and it's not something that you really
- 7:14Speaker 1: want to mess around with. I've been working with the
- 7:16Speaker 1: same account and for the better part of the last
- 7:19Speaker 1: four years. He works with a lot of people that
- 7:21Speaker 1: are similar to me, and that they have many ten
- 7:23Speaker 1: ninety nine's. I don't just have one W two from
- 7:27Speaker 1: my job, and so that's kind of my only secret
- 7:30Speaker 1: to me honest, my tip is to outsource help. It
- 7:34Speaker 1: is certainly worth the investment, and then focus on the
- 7:37Speaker 1: things that you are good at. And also I have
- 7:39Speaker 1: another tip that is my expenses. I use an app
- 7:44Speaker 1: called Expensify, not sponsored just something that I'm truly a
- 7:48Speaker 1: fan of. I believe it's something like four or five
- 7:50Speaker 1: dollars a month, and I forward all of my work
- 7:53Speaker 1: related expenses to an email account that they provide for me,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and then that uploads them and keeps track of them.
- 8:00Speaker 1: So come tax season, I can simply just print out
- 8:03Speaker 1: a document and give it to my accountant. I also
- 8:06Speaker 1: have a spreadsheet that I put in every contract that
- 8:10Speaker 1: I sign and the amount of that contract in the document,
- 8:14Speaker 1: so then when I get my documents from all of
- 8:18Speaker 1: the different vendors that I've worked with, I can crosscheck
- 8:21Speaker 1: and make sure that all of those amounts are correct.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I believe that conventionally someone might use something like quick
- 8:27Speaker 1: books for that. For me, Google sheets does just fine.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I've figured it out for myself in that way, so
- 8:35Speaker 1: worker than an accountant, if you can expensivey is the
- 8:39Speaker 1: best keep track of what you are spending and then
- 8:42Speaker 1: also what you are making. And those are my top tips.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I know it's stressful, we're all going through it. You're
- 8:49Speaker 1: not alone how you feel. That's what I'm gonna tell you.
- 8:53Speaker 1: I can't believe that April is on the other side
- 8:55Speaker 1: of this weekend. Wow, another month and another herd all conquered.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Catch you guys next time.
