- 0:28Welcome to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio from Boise, Idaho. This

- 0:45Radio Detectives, and become one of our friends on Facebook, Facebook dot com
- 0:51slash Radio Detectives. Well, before we do get started, I want to
- 0:56encourage you, if you've not already, pick up your copy of my first
- 1:03Detective Stories, available as a digital sort on Amazon for ninety nine cents,
- 1:08and the title is an ounce of prevention the nice novel act and introduces some
- 1:14characters that will flesh out a bit more in the mystery novel I hope to
- 1:18publish next year, Slim Incorporated. Also after the show, I'm going to
- 1:23talk a little bit about the movie Nick Carter, Master Detective. I've seen
- 1:27the first of the three MGM Nick Carter movies, and I figure if we
- 1:32talk about it on the show, But let's go ahead and listen today's episode
- 1:37of Nick Carter Records of Death. Another call. Yes, it's another case
- 2:04for that most famous of all man hunters, the detective whose ability it's solving
- 2:07crime is unequaled. In the history of detective fiction, Nick Carter, Master
- 2:12Detective. So that's Curious Adventure. Records of death are Nick Carter and the
- 2:19Mystery of the Unclaimed Fox. The thank of the matter is, mister Carter.
- 2:28But I have quite accidentally stumbled on a terrible crime, or to be
- 2:31more correct, I've stumbled on evidence that a terrible crime has been committed.
- 2:36But even so, mister Field, why do you come to me with it?
- 2:38That's sort of things to be reported to the police. Mister Carter,
- 2:39What police would I report it to? Where was the murder committed? I
- 2:43don't know. How can I know that a murder's been done if you don't
- 2:45know where it was done. That's what makes this particular crime different from any
- 2:49other. Somewhere sometime a murder has been committed, yet I don't know when
- 2:53or where. A matter of fact, I doubt if anyone in the world
- 2:54knows of it. He said, those who did it and me? And
- 2:58how are you having in all of it? Because victim, a young and
- 3:00beautiful girl, has told me so in her own words. I have the
- 3:04knowledge from her own lips. Oh, and you've seen and talked to her.
- 3:07Well, here's the story. Miss Carter. About a month ago,
- 3:09I attended one of the sales of unclaimed packages that the Express Company holds twice
- 3:14a year. Among other things I bought was a box about once the size
- 3:17of a steamer trunk. It contains some miscellaneous articles of clothing and ten phonograph
- 3:22records. Phonograph records, huh, regular professional records, no, Miss Carter.
- 3:25They were small record blanks you buy when you make home recordings for yourself.
- 3:30I immediately played the records, and since then I've played them so often
- 3:34I almost know them by heart. And you learn about this crime from those
- 3:37records? Yesel you wonder arouse my curiosity? You certainly succeeded. Why could
- 3:43I hear these records immediately? Miss Carter? I have them in my room.
- 3:46You'll go there with me. We can listen to them at once,
- 3:47splendid, no matter if I take my assistant, Patsy born of me,
- 3:50of course not. And as soon as she's ready to go, Patsy,
- 3:53yes, get your hat. We're leaving at once to listen to a murder.
- 4:05This is the box mister got him. Yereful, isn't it? I
- 4:09must have here before we go further. There are a few things. I
- 4:11should like to know. How long ago did you buy this box at the
- 4:14auction? A little over a month ago? On the Express company must have
- 4:17had it for about a year or so. Another thing, were there any
- 4:20wrappings on the box when you bought it? Yes, it was well wrapped
- 4:24in a heavy burlap. Have those rappings now, I, I'm sorry to
- 4:26say I don't. For the time I realized that the rappings might have furnished
- 4:30the clue to the mystery, they've been burned in the incinerator, too bad.
- 4:32Well, do you've had a chance. Whatever we call the name and
- 4:34addressed to which the box was consigned, Fortunately I do. It was addressed
- 4:39to an Alex delanois New York City. But I've searched every city directory,
- 4:43every telephone book, every place where names are listed, and I can find
- 4:46no such name anywhere. There was no street address, and the rest of
- 4:48the label, as I remember it was practically obliterated. I see, all
- 4:51right, mister Pheer, Let's listen to the records, and gladly, I'm
- 4:55very anxious to get your opinion of them. Are they in any kind of
- 4:57order? After hearing them over and over, I've done I believe that I
- 5:00have finally arranged them in their proper order. They're so peculiar I can hardly
- 5:04wait to see if you can tell me the answer. Here's a good one.
- 5:10I have a terrible story tale. But even while I try to tell
- 5:15it, I'm afraid that you who may listen to this will not believe me.
- 5:19But I beg you. If justice means anything to you, believe me
- 5:25and a binge me. I shall rest easier in my grave if I know
- 5:30that those who hope to prophet for my death have been deprived of a fortunately
- 5:32plan to get by killing me. I am very rich, but I am
- 5:39not rich enough to avoid the fate that is in store for me. She
- 5:44sounded if she meant it, didn't she I thought he was coming in,
- 5:48but he went away. I've tried several times to escape, but I've failed
- 5:54each time. I wish I could tell you where I am, but I
- 5:58can't. But I was gone when they brought me here. Oh I forgot
- 6:03to say. My name is Nancy Deary, and I'm twenty two years old.
- 6:10You who listened to this will recognize the name at once. Of course,
- 6:14I only hope they don't hurt of me until I can. Is that
- 6:18the end of it? I quiet he almost caught me that time, but
- 6:28now he's left me alone again. Maybe I can't. That's all. Apparently
- 6:33he came back before she expected him. Had any of terbal getting a theory
- 6:36out of the records, didn't she? He is she was interrupted many times
- 6:41and didn't lay in the wrong places. I imagine no travel is too great
- 6:44if you're really desperate, but a terrible feeling it must be to be killed.
- 6:47Here's the second record if you're ready. Okay, I don't know where
- 6:51I left off with my story last time, and I dare not play it
- 6:56back. If they should ever hear what I'm trying to do, they take
- 6:59the machine away from me, then I'd be completely lost. I feel that
- 7:04my end is coming very soon. Now they may carry out their plans to
- 7:11in lovel all my doll, when lie's are all t lo a lovely.
- 7:32I think he's gone now. I'm sure Ralph was listening at the door,
- 7:36but the singing apparently convinced him. I was listening to the radio. When
- 7:42the time comes, I know it will be Ralph who kills me. Well,
- 7:46it will undoubtedly help him, but Ralph is the leader. I found
- 7:50that out the other day when they tried to get me to sign the papers
- 7:53which will give them possession of my fortune. I shall never sign. But
- 7:58that lie the bad you didn't think they better. She managed to get most
- 8:09of her story on the record, one way or another. The things she
- 8:11really missed out. I was telling us more about herself than just her name.
- 8:16I have never occurred to her that the records might travel thousands of miles
- 8:18before someone would hear them. Here's a third record. Last night, somebody
- 8:24searched my rooms while I was in bed. Maybe they suspect that I'm making
- 8:28these records. Hello, I'm very careful. I'd play the radio all the
- 8:33time so they'll be used to hearing the noise. Ralph told me yesterday he
- 8:39was sure I was going crazy. Maybe I all of asked me to tell
- 8:45you that and let end that Who's what at the end, I suspect it
- 8:50was Ralph's. It's amazing how much of the scenes she recreates this way without
- 8:54really saying anything definite of the suspense right along with her On the fourth record,
- 9:01she was able to get part of the visit that ralphada one day Nooney
- 9:05was coming and prepared for it by putting a ragged blank in the machine and
- 9:07advance, and then when you heard him at the door, she probably turned
- 9:09it on. You got this one, Well, my beautiful young half sister,
- 9:22have you decided to sign over your fortune to me? I told you
- 9:26love it. If you sign, will set you free, just as we
- 9:30promised. You go up, Ralph. Unless I have signed my name to
- 9:35that paper you have there, you'll kill me. You know that as well
- 9:39as I do. You have me freak. Yeah, you have done it
- 9:46when you're well off, Nancy. If you did, you sign and go
- 9:48free. I do, and I also think it won't be long before you
- 9:56wish you had. Oh I wonder how they help killed me? Ralph had
- 10:09hanged me, I'm sure, And she used poison moable. That's all there
- 10:22is on that one. The pit is you're going to put more on each
- 10:24recom than she did. She really used only a small portion of each blank,
- 10:28yes, Betty, but she had trouble enough to get even that much
- 10:31on them. The way they watched her. Nick, where could she get
- 10:33the blank record in the first place? You certainly wouldn't have let her have
- 10:37them knowingly I would have made a guess, Betsy, I had to say
- 10:39that. One they took her to the place where she was kept prisoner,
- 10:41the Papa Betok, along her clothes and some of the furnishings, and among
- 10:45them, pably was this radio phonograph. Perhaps she especially asked for it because
- 10:48she loved music or something, and the record blanks would probably the machine,
- 10:50along with the other records that could be Now, how about the fifth record.
- 10:54I've never been able to make much out of this one. Maybe you'll
- 10:58have a better love. You mean, it's not like yeah, that's quite
- 11:00different, you know. I started near the end the whole first party,
- 11:03just scratch nothing else. That's the idea of locking herself fancy very dog out.
- 11:22No I'm bringing off the hall. What there really chair? It succeeds,
- 11:50little devil, but so very clear that I haven't there to me that
- 11:58locked your doors out of the record for some reason. So you waited before
- 12:01saying anything. Then Ralph and Olive came from the door, locked and being
- 12:05suspicious, broken down. Nancy hid and they dragged her out. There was
- 12:09an argument about something and I didn't get Nancy grabbed Ralph's pistole and took a
- 12:13quick shot at him, but you missed for you couldull the trigger again.
- 12:15He took the gun away from him. Good griefous courage, clear enough when
- 12:18you tell him, well, he's the sixth one. Hurry the time is
- 12:24very short. I may be interrupted any minute. I'm seldom left alone any
- 12:28more. They seem to be afraid of what I'll do if I'm left alone.
- 12:33I wondered if they hadn't killed me before this. I wonder if fake.
- 12:37There's nothing but scratch, but quite a bit here, and she's notes
- 12:41again. Ali came in. I had to stop. Now she's gone for
- 12:50a few minutes at least yet to day. I little letter to my father,
- 12:54and I threw it out the window, hoping someone would find it and
- 12:56mail it. But Ralph found it and brought it back to me and laughs
- 13:01at me. I keep asking him for news of my father, but he'll
- 13:05tell me nothing. If Father only knew where I am, he'd rescue me,
- 13:09maybe if I can jump. And that's the end of that. We
- 13:13didn't get me out of it. I wonder where father comes in before we
- 13:18through The seventh Regged is more interesting. You have recorded a complete conversation between
- 13:22Nancy and Ralph. Good, that's here. Well, my dear Nancy,
- 13:35how are you to day? You had your way out of me? Day?
- 13:39Ohy, don't you kid yourself? Save us the trouble you mean,
- 13:41sabe you've been having a murder on your conscience. You have to say you're
- 13:48learning me. It's fine inch every day that I've said you, well,
- 13:50I don't object to doing it that way if I can't. If you ever
- 13:58throw anything like that again, how'll tie up so you won't be a long
- 14:03one of your chair? Well, if you really want me to tie those
- 14:11papers for you, just let me go to my father. You don't want
- 14:16anything, you are out of the question. But if you sign, we'll
- 14:20see that your father finds you soon enough. And it's only because i'm your
- 14:26half brother that I offer you this. How long next time? I won
- 14:45with my half sis trying to do it right now, and I do enjoy
- 14:48doing it, so don't tell me too far. I might forget that you're
- 14:52mother and mine with a saint see row, would you get a glass of
- 15:01water? Please? Please? Well? All right, but no tricks surrounds.
- 15:13Oh gosh, I wish we could have had more of that. Yes,
- 15:16I might have learned something really important. You will, Limsey knew the
- 15:20record was near the end of that glass of water was merely an excuse to
- 15:22get rapped out of the room once she put on a new one. Good
- 15:24for her, a clever girl, but what a terrible idea she went through,
- 15:28never knowing from one day to the neck whether it was her last.
- 15:31Quite batch you please, thank you? You were going about a long time.
- 15:37I met all of in the hall. Sure reminded me to tell you.
- 15:43We've decided that unless you do is we want you to You have just
- 15:48one more day to live. Just what doing that frightens me? Hello,
- 15:58welcome. It's the only way I'm ever get away from you too. I'm
- 16:03fairly convinced you'll never succeed in getting possession of my fortune. Of course,
- 16:07we're getting no doubt about that. I don't think you. No, No,
- 16:14that is, you won't get it unless you're planning on murdering my father
- 16:19too. Have you for it? And you will want to leave behind him?
- 16:23It's smart. Don't you guessed it the first time? No? Don't
- 16:30you would? No? Why not? He's not my father and he want
- 16:36his fortune? Draw singles. I can't believe that any human created you too,
- 16:41really exist. Our mother bore a strange lot of children didn't see.
- 16:48On one hand we have you, my saintly Nancy, and on the other
- 16:52hand we have the twins. All of it or anything but safe. Yes,
- 17:00this is very strange sometimes. Yeah, the next idea, I'll be
- 17:08gonna hear about fifteen minutes. If you're wise, you won't be alive when
- 17:12I have returned. Good Bye. I hope for you heard what he said.
- 17:25It was the best evidence I could well really made a poor confession without
- 17:30knowing that everybody was being preserved for you to hear my father why he died?
- 17:41Oh, I thank you? Who you want? He would? You
- 17:48can do anything to a bench up the can's name? Do it? I
- 17:55go to my dea. Who you are? Sha't have my right? Ben
- 18:00fah, Oh, let's see the record? What not me? If you
- 18:19didn't know she wasn't dead ages, you'd almost think she was putting on an
- 18:22act. I still feel terribly moved when I hear that record. If you
- 18:26never had a chance, really well, I'm gonna say the next one,
- 18:29that's the ninth, isn't it? Number nine is almost a blank here it
- 18:33is they almost caught me that time. They mustn't do that because they might
- 18:41find the records I've already made and destroyed them. They're both coming back in
- 18:47a few minutes, but maybe I can. Is that all there is on
- 18:51that one? That's all? That's the end of the record. That's one
- 18:53more, isn't it? Yes? And number ten the verse two thirds of
- 18:57it's blank. It's done here and that both. But you'll see. I'm
- 19:07mob you know, I can shoo shoes straight. I will kill my friend
- 19:12one of you to move? My god, where did you get it all?
- 19:17I gave it to me so I prepared myself. Why your little sign
- 19:30you aren't waiting much this time? Well that takes care of you. Oh
- 19:45oh yes, yeah, what happened? The bullet just raised your temper?
- 19:53Stuff you momentary, Nancy did? Yes? What do we do with the
- 20:03body? The old man will be here in a couple of hours. We
- 20:06don't want to be. That's the end of the last record. She certainly
- 20:11got a tough break. I truly believe that's the most remarkably told tragedy in
- 20:17history. Whomost god? Have you got the ideas I have? I'm not
- 20:19ready to talk about them yet. What's the next step now, Nick,
- 20:22Well, first of all, Patsy, I want to examine the other contents
- 20:25of the dox thairly. I can look them over more intelligently now that I've
- 20:27heard the records. Then I want to play those records over and over till
- 20:32I know them by heart. And then then I expect to be able to
- 20:34give you the answer to the problem. Got a sandwich in your pocket,
- 20:45Betsy? Oh, Nick, I thought you'd never finished listening to Oh.
- 20:48I want to be sure I didn't miss anything anyway, And I believe I've
- 20:51learned everything those records can tell me. You mean you really found some clue
- 20:53with me. Yes, indeed, Betsy, several clues marked out works very
- 20:56plainly. Oh, that's wonderful. Want to go over that list from hit
- 21:00of the other things that when that dox addressed to Alex seven what court?
- 21:03Let me see now? When mayas here? It is Alpa poke would Mabel
- 21:08Felix and Company, Toronto, and a beautiful and expensive thing. It was
- 21:11too silk slipped with the name Olivette du Prey pinned on it. Wish I
- 21:17could win thoak like that, Patsy silk slipped with the name Nancy Deering pin
- 21:21to it, the New Testament with the name Avengeline du Prey on the fly
- 21:25leaves, several rings, all very valuable, a real pearl necklace and some
- 21:30beautiful and very extensive lace. Also, of course the bloodstained nightclift, which
- 21:34must have been the one that Nancy was murdered him. And the three snapshots
- 21:37of course, oh he is one with the name Olivette on the back,
- 21:41one with the name Ralph, and one with the name Avengeline du Prey Dearing.
- 21:45Whoever packed that dox knew exactly what are we doing, Patsy, I'll
- 21:48ask together beautifully he or she has given us all the clues he could to
- 21:52the people concerning the affair. Avengeline dou Prey Dearing must have been the mother.
- 21:56Yes, she had two children, twins, Ralph and olivet by her
- 22:00first marriage. Then she married Nancy's brother, man named Deering. But that
- 22:03doesn't get as much nearer a solution there, am it does, Patsy?
- 22:07Did you notice that all the voices were heard on the records were American?
- 22:10Well, yes, I guess they were, And yet the names are mostly
- 22:12French aren't they wouldn't we find a combination like carry around here? Why in
- 22:17Canada? I suppose exactly. And the label on the opera cloak says Toronto,
- 22:22which confirms the Canada idea perfectly. You mean that the Deerings lived in
- 22:25Toronto. It's certainly quite logical to assume that the scene of the murders Canada,
- 22:29very possibly in the vicinity of Toronto, which start the run away.
- 22:32Maybe the Toronto police can help us. But Nick, even if you're right,
- 22:34it doesn't mean that the police would know anything about the murder. It
- 22:37was all done so secretly. You're overlooking one thing, Betsy, I am
- 22:41what is it? The family from which these people came was in a rich
- 22:44family, very rich indeed, if we may guess from the beautiful laces and
- 22:47from the jewelry and other things. Back to the box, and remember also
- 22:49that Nancy's father was probably killed two now, I can't believe that the head
- 22:53of a rich and probably well known family could disappear without anyone knowing it.
- 22:57You mean you think the police will know that something happened to him about a
- 23:00year ago, even if they don't think that there's anything wrong about it.
- 23:03Exactly. So pack your bag, Betsy in order a taxi to take us
- 23:06to the airport. We're applying to Toronto immediately. I'm very happy to welcome
- 23:18you back to Toronto, mister Carthy. It's been many years since you've been
- 23:22up here. Just us. Thanks very much. See you might have I
- 23:25asked a few questions. Of course, now go right ahead. Did you
- 23:27get a letter about a year ago telling that a murder had been done?
- 23:30Never? If you wanted proof, you should claim an express box sent to
- 23:33New York City in the name of Alex Donnwell wait a minute, George Carley,
- 23:38we did get just such a letter, but we thought it was the
- 23:41work of a crank and destroyed it. You mean it was true. I
- 23:45have every reason to believe it was. Now another question, Would you know
- 23:48anything about a girl named Nancy Deary or about her father? Heaven? Say,
- 23:52gotter, what do you know about the Deering family? Who answered my
- 23:56question first, I'll answer yours. What about the Dearing father? Charles steering
- 24:00Is was a younger son of an English nobleman. He was immensely rich at
- 24:07a house here in town, the country place called Deering Hall. He married
- 24:11a woman with two children, twins, I believe, and she died when
- 24:15his daughter Nancy was born. He always prominent in local affairs up to about
- 24:19a year ago when he said to have disappeared. Have been seen since.
- 24:25I understand he started for Deering Hall but never arrived there, according to his
- 24:27two stepchildren. What about his daughter Nancy? Nancy was brought up by relatives
- 24:32in Montreal. Two people here know her at all, But as I remember
- 24:37it, she was supposed to have disappeared just before her father did, although
- 24:41I now understand that she was at Deering Hall with her half brother and sister
- 24:44all the time. Is say Nancy didn't disappear after all? I know as
- 24:48a matter of fact, she was here in Toronto this past week. She
- 24:52believes her father is dead, so she's applied for letters of administration for the
- 24:55estate. I thought, so, who did? What? You know about
- 24:59it enough to know that this girl who calls herself Nancy Dearing isn't Nancy Thereing
- 25:02at all. She's an impostor from the step children and brought into impersonator chief.
- 25:07We got to get up to Deering Hall. At once, road leading
- 25:21into the dealing estate turns off somewhere right in here, Carter. I'm quite
- 25:26sure. I look the man turning in the road up ahead. So there
- 25:30is, and he's motioning to us this time a queer looking individual. Help
- 25:37you are going into the oil, Yes we are. Why could you take
- 25:41me back there? I walked so far dog of course climbing. What you
- 25:47are police? One more? Yes? Then you can help me? And
- 25:51I need to have so very much what seems to be the trouble. I
- 25:56am Alex Delenoi. Yes you know you won't set a box packed with records,
- 26:02not the thanks in New York City addressed yourself. But yes you have
- 26:04seen it. Yes, that's why we're here. Tell me how did you?
- 26:07Ever? Yes, I will tell you everything. I was the captake
- 26:11and r steering. Let me stay in one of the fold tower rooms because
- 26:17I am, as you see, a creeper. Sometimes I do not get
- 26:21out of bed for days of the time. About a year ago the two
- 26:26stepchildren of those very weak devils came to the hall. It what the girl
- 26:32who was kept the personal in one of the bed rooms. Alex is not
- 26:36the horrorad to the hardest. I had no but yes, the hall is
- 26:38about half a mile in of this world go on with the story. Act
- 26:45here the girl was so carefully guarded by those two. I could not get
- 26:51to her room. I could not help. But I am a crapper.
- 26:56Now you did what you carry like you being a hatter? And how did
- 27:00you manage to get the things backed in the box? After they killed Nancy?
- 27:07They did not guard their rooms so carefully. I got in. I
- 27:11took the records and the other things and packed them in the box. A
- 27:17fu shureman I know up by the lake to send the box by experts for
- 27:21me. I rode to the police in Toronto and in New York and told
- 27:26them what had happened, and asked them to claim this box. But I
- 27:30am afraid they did not do it. No, we didn't. We thought
- 27:33that it was just a hoax. What about Nancy's father? Ah, the
- 27:37day after Nancy was killed, he came here and they tried to kill him
- 27:41too, tried to You mean they didn't screep No, no, not quite.
- 27:45They ate him on the head with a pistol and throw him into the
- 27:48lake from the high cliff. Ah. But I saw them do it,
- 27:52and I rescued him. I took him to my home and nursed him myself
- 27:56until he could get a doctor's about. Well, now I think there's a
- 28:02house right ahead, Nick, rap right up to the door. Chief,
- 28:04I'll go ahead. You keep in the background in case they know you.
- 28:07Okay, got her, and I'll be right behind you. Alex, you
- 28:11and Patsy stay here in the car. Yes, what does it? Please?
- 28:27Please tell them it's jeering that we've come to take some Affidavid's considering her
- 28:30application as administrators for the estate. Yes, I'll come in. Please,
- 28:36I'll announce you it's your turn, not Chief. I'll stand here one side
- 28:40of the door, just in case I can handle them. May be here
- 28:45they come. Well, gentlemen, what can we all pray? I arrest
- 28:48you and your sister Olivet for the murder. I'll think I come to fight.
- 28:52Oh no, you're going to take care. I cantigure him. I
- 29:00sure carter the ankers on him. They both keep safely, and we can
- 29:06put them behind the bars and we can now restore hearing hold. It was
- 29:10rightful owner. What's for? Even though it's almost a year later, the
- 29:12box said, Alex and andwa pact has fulfilled his destiny. This has been
- 29:33another of the Strange Adventures of Nick Carter, Master Detective, which are brought
- 29:37to you regularly at the same time by w O R Mutual. What's your
- 29:41starty going to be about? Next week? Mat next week, I'm going
- 29:42to tell you the tale of the thief and murderer. I had to be
- 29:45caught twice before he was really caught it all. And when Nick caught him
- 29:48the second time, it was because he was able to get an advance exactly
- 29:51what the criminal was going to do, as well as exactly what he was
- 29:53going to think. And what did you say? The crime was merely a
- 29:56matter of murder and robbery. There was nothing unusual in the crime itself.
- 30:00The excitement came and the way Nick chased him, outsmarted him and finally caught
- 30:03him a very special example of the criminal. It was just a little too
- 30:06clever for his own good. He overrated himself and underrated Nick. That's always
- 30:11dangerous where Nick Carter is concerned. Thank for the government, and so long
- 30:15until next week. So long everybody, and so long to you both.
- 30:18In the strange adventure you've just heard, Nick Carter was impersonated by Lon Clark.
- 30:22Patsy by Helen Chot original music was played by Lou White, and the
- 30:26entire production was written and directed by Jack McGregor. Next week, at the
- 30:30same time, listen to another curious experience of Nick Carter entitled The Unwilling Accomplice
- 30:36or Nick Carter and the Mystery of the Society of Burglar. This story is
- 30:42a copyrighted feature of Streed and Smith Publications Incorporated. This is mutual, all
- 30:48right, welcome back. I love the concept of this episode in so many
- 31:07ways. It's fascinating and a bit creepy at the same time. The downsigns
- 31:14to this episode or that we had a great deal of the show where our
- 31:21hero was listening to the tape, so less time for real detective work and
- 31:25action, though they tried to make up for that at the end. Plus
- 31:29the tapes themselves were a little bit more over the top and melodramatic than even
- 31:36the typical show materials. But again, I think it's just it's an interesting
- 31:41concept of finding these things, and it's probably something that could only really effectively
- 31:48be done over the radio. If you're aware of any memorable stories that did
- 31:55this similarly, I'd love to hear about it. Just feel free to drop
- 31:59me a line. Email me Box thirteen, Great Detectives dot Net. All
- 32:01right, well we'll get in at one listener comment, and then I'm going
- 32:05to go ahead and talk a bit about the Nick Carter the movie. Derek
- 32:13says, Hello, Adam, I have to say that I absolutely love listening
- 32:16to your podcast while I'm working. I make furniture and cabinetry, and on
- 32:21those long days when I'm sanding and sanding, I think I'd go crazy without
- 32:25your podcast. I finally got caught up on all your shows, except on
- 32:29iTunes, I can only access back to number two forty five. Is there
- 32:32a way I can access the first two hundred and forty four episodes? Thank
- 32:37you for all you do And answer to your question, Derek, I'm well,
- 32:40I'm surprised you were able to get back to that far. He's put
- 32:45this on the page archives dot Great Detectives dot Net. The easiest way really
- 32:50is to go back to the individual shows and the programs that we had done
- 32:55in those first two hundred and forty four episodes. We did Box thirteen,
- 33:04we did Jeff Reagan, we did Pat Novac for Hire. Actually we did
- 33:12Pat Novac for Hire first. Let George do it, Sherlock Holmes and of
- 33:15course yours truly, Johnny Dollar, and we've got to complete archive there.
- 33:19So my best answer is to most of those, you should just be able
- 33:22to go through the individual show freeds for those programs. For Johnny Dollar,
- 33:30you'd want to download the individual episodes off of the side. But thanks so
- 33:34much for listening. All right, Well, now on to Nick Harter Master
- 33:38Detective. First of all, I do want to say that this is a
- 33:43movie that would not have been available on DVD. Tell about six months ago
- 33:50when Warner Archives released it, and when I found out about the that had
- 33:57been released, I definitely wanted to watch it so I could talk about him.
- 34:00We kind of be informed. Host. I have bought this along with
- 34:06some pro DVD of Saint movies, which we're going to start in six months.
- 34:10The film was released in December of nineteen thirty nine and it starred Walter
- 34:15Pigeon as Nick Carter, and Nick is investigating a case of aerospace sabotage or
- 34:23I should say industrial theft, where plans are being smuggled out of an aircraft
- 34:31manufacturing plant despite some very stringent regulations. Though Nick has to find out who's
- 34:38behind it and what is up with the case. Overall, I really like
- 34:45the movie Nick Carter made. Was played pretty well by Walter Pigeon. A
- 34:52charming competent characters is the way that Pigeon portrayed Carter, with some nice touches
- 34:58of humor, would often take in this film. They would take he would
- 35:02take precautionary snaps in case somebody was a part of the conspiracy. His catchphrase
- 35:09in this movie was if I'm wrong, I'll apologize. I also have to
- 35:14say that some of these early aviation scenes were pretty fascinating, just showing a
- 35:21lot of what this of what it was like to fly in the nineteen thirties,
- 35:30some interesting planes and it's just very different from the modern era of planes.
- 35:36For those who are fans of the program will remember the actor walllly Mayer
- 35:42Mayor of course appeared on the lineup and also let George do it, And
- 35:46this was the first time I saw him one film. He did a decent
- 35:49job. It was a bit role. He died off pretty early. Also,
- 35:54Donald Meek provided the comic relief as a want to be detective Beekeeper,
- 36:02which I don't know if that was a reference to Sherlock Holmes Sue in his
- 36:07retirement was a beekeeper. May have been a subconscious or unconscious reference. I
- 36:14should say. The one thing that really impressed me about the film overall was
- 36:21just the action scenes from it, because I've seen a lot of Golden Age
- 36:28films and usually the action scenes they don't stand up really well, and this
- 36:35one it really did. They had one scene towards the end where they were
- 36:42shooting down from the sky and they just did a great job. It felt
- 36:46real and sounded real. Really was a very well done sequence both times with
- 36:54the effects in that scene. It was just very surprising, not something expect
- 37:00from. Was actually a pretty short, breezy film. It was under an
- 37:04hour at fifty nine minutes. And there were two other Nick Carter films,
- 37:08and I'll watch those in coming weeks, certainly before we finish the show.
- 37:12I plan to watch two episode two Saint movies for every Nick Carter movie,
- 37:22so that we'll have things balanced out well and be well versed in the George
- 37:28Sander Saint movies, but also want to enjoy this series. I think it'll
- 37:34be a trade. If these next two are as good as the first one
- 37:37was, all right, well, that will actually do it for today.
- 37:40We'll be back tomorrow with yours truly, Johnny Dler as well as doctor Tim
- 37:45Detective, and then join us back here next Thursday for Nick Carter. If
- 37:52you know a friend who would enjoy the program, send them over to Great
- 37:55Detectives dot net. You can follow us over on Twitter at Ratio Detectives,
- 38:00and become one of our friends on Facebook, Facebook dot com. Slash Radio
- 38:05Detectives from Boise, Idaho. This is your host, Adam Graham signing off.
